Preferred Solution: HELP!!!! Buffalo external hard drive shows empty on Windows 7 pro

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Hi, I have a 500gb seagate external hard drive, and already used 240gb space.
It worked fine until yesterday suddenly i could not access the files at all. I checked disk management, and it showed that my external drive became RAW drive.

I tried to do chkdsk that i learned from one of the forum, and then it somehow has fixed the RAW drive back to FAT32. However i still cannot see any of my files.

I opened command prompt, and typed in dir /a
and it said 0 files 0 byets, 4 DIR 288,714, 293, 248 bytes free

How can i bring my files back?? I don't want to lose my files
can someone help me please..urgent

Sorry i am no tech expert, so please help me using an easy explanation =)

Answer:HELP! External hard drive shows used space but empty folders!

Sounds like the FAT table has got screwed up meaning the OS will not be able to display your files - don't worry, this is quite common and you should be able to recover them on the assumption the drive is not physically damaged (i.e. clunking when seeking).

There are plenty of recovery programs, some free, that work well.

I'll check these out and post back.

Hi, does anyone know of "Buffalo"s reliability? It seems my current external drive is about to give up. Its a Western Digital 'My Book' 320gb and its making odd "clicking noises".Yesterday it disappeared from 'my computer' and i eventually got it working after pulling out all the plugs and re-booting pc. The "Buffalo DriveStation" 500gb looks a good buy from for 50. Any thoughts please - Tony

Hi Everyone,

I am using a Buffalo LinkStation (LS-QVL), it is configured for RAID 10 and has 4 Terabytes of capacity. I am not using anywhere near the full capacity (instead I am only using about 6%!). It has occurred to me that I should make an off-site backup of the content on the LinkStation. Toward this end I would like to backup the contents of the LinkStation to an external USB hard drive.

Can anybody tell me if it is possible to backup files from this NAS to an external hard drive? If it is possible any advice on how to set this up will be greatly appreciated.

Kind Regards,

Answer:Backing up Buffalo NAS to an external hard drive

Unless your NAS has a provision to mount the external hard drive via USB and supports file transfers between the volumes, you're going to have to do this over the network with the external hard drive connected to a PC that is connected to the NAS.

Hi all,

New to this site, so hope this is in the right place and hope you can help!

I have just purchased a 500G Buffalo external hard drive, HD-PC500U2/BK-EU. Plug it in and it is recognised by my P.C (running XP) but I cannot go any further and cannot run the DriveNavi.exe file which is on the external HD. All I get are the following error messages

The application failed to inialize properly (0xc0000006). Click OK to terminate the application.

Only part of a ReadProcessMemory or WriteProcessMemory request was completed

F:\DriveNavi.exe is not a valid Win32 application

I have trawled the net to try to find a solution and Buffalo support are no use at all...and extremely frustrated and would appreciate any help, please

Answer:Buffalo External Hard drive problem-Help please!

That sounds like an autorun request for the bundled DriveNavi.exe program. And "trawled the net"? . I think you've gotta format the HDD. That might just do the trick.

HI everyone,

Ive been using my WD Elements 1.5TB for quite a while now but I recently had trouble with it.
It doesn't show any of the maps I created on it. However if I type the name of the map in the address bars it does reach the map. I use it to store all my programs, games and movies so its quite important.

E:\ = It will show that this folder (drive) is empty
E:\Movies = It will show all the movies.

Its the same with my other folders on that drive.

I had the same problem with a smaller drive but there wasn't much on that so I just formatted it and it works fine again.
I can't afford to have all this data wiped so it will take a lot of time backing everything up. (which I also don't have to room for)

I hope anyone knows a solution for this except formatting the drive,

Thanks in advance

Hi,I usually have my buffalo external hdd connected to my dell studio 15. I tried shutting down once but accidentally put it into hibernation. So after it hibernated I switched it back on, the hdd would spin up a couple of times, but as it got to the desktop it would spin down. I try to access the hdd and I can see the folders etc, when I try entering a folder such as "music" for example, the hdd would spin up, but then a message would say the folder music is unavailable. So I refresh the window, and the music folder disappears! just like that, now after the spin up, i can access the rest of the folders, but the "music" is just gone forever. Does anyone know what's going on or how I can get that folder back. It was actually the "documents" folder in my case, but music was an example. Thanks

My friend had her laptop hard drive replaced by some company. They did not copy her documents and pictures to her new drive so she asked me if I could do it for her. I told her I would slave the drive to my machine and see if I could read the old drive, if so, I could probably retrieve the items and save them for her.

It is a 60 Gig Hitachi Travelstar Hard Drive. I put the hard drive in my external USB case and plugged it in to my Laptop running VISTA (SP-2) I also plugged it in to a Windows XP Pro machine. I have a buffalo 500gb external HD which I use mainly as a back up for photos/docs/vids etc., I have been deleting alot of uneccessary things on it and it now contains only 47gb of material, however when I click on the properties it is still showing 270gb free of 465gb, this means that there is still 195gb of material when in fact there is only 47gb of material on it in total - how can this be?? Woke up this morning and the computer rebooted over night, when I logged in my desktop picture is still there but all my desktop icons have disappeared.  Did a quick google search and tried ending the explorer task and running it and still nothing.
Rebooted the computer a couple times and still nothing.  Then figured I'd go look into the registry to see if anything weird was showing in there and nothing.
When I click on the computer it shows my hard-drive is using 100GB of space but when I click on the c drive to view the contents it says that the folder is empty.  Verified that files weren't hidden and even after doing the show hidden files it still
says it's empry.  Windows 7 seems to be operating fine even though it's showing nothing.  Computer boots up fine, the ie icons on the taskbar opens up fine, any command line commands work.
Tried running the sfc scannow and came back clean, chkdsk has come back with no problems either.  Kinda at a loss as I'd rather not reinstall windows and I can't even back up the files I have as they aren't showing up.  I do get the same thing
whether I boot into safe mode or not.

Hi need help, have basic computer skills.
My computer went insane last night and to cut a long story short I ended up having to reformat my pc. When I had everything set up again I plugged in my external hard drive and it showed up as empty. I got out my backup cd and copied it during the process I got a warning message that there was already a folder called (Creative Writing) and did I want to overwrite the originall. I stoped the copying. I'm assuming that means the files are all still there (phew) now how do I make it so I can see and acess them. I have the pc set up to see hidden files.

My HP Notebook (Windows 7) suffered a sudden meltdown earlier this evening and after hours of trying to resolve the problem, I did a system recovery and took it back to its factory settings. Everything seems alright now, except for one annoying thing: I connected my USB external hard drive and it showed up as normal in Computer, (G, and also displayed the usual 250GB free of 450GB blurb underneath the title, but when I clicked to open it, nothing was there except for the words 'This folder is empty'. I plugged it into my flatmate's Mac, and all the files showed up fine, but they just won't show up on my laptop. Does anyone have any clue as to how I can rectify this? Thanks in advance.

Hi Folks,
I have a WD Passpport 250 GB USB external hard drive. "My Computer" shows I have 176 GB of free space on this drive. However, when I try to copy large files (4 GB) to the drive I get a "disk full" message. Any tips on how to rectify this problem?

Answer:Cannot write to empty space on WD external hard drive

The WD drive is probably formatted as FAT32 which has a 4GB size limit for files. Break the file into two smaller pieces then see if it will transfer.

Hope someone can help me.

I'm going through to search through all the threads pertaining to Bitlocker to see if anyone had a similar issue but no luck yet.

1) Windows 7 x64 was on C:
2) G: was Bitlocker encrypted

Got a new GPU and went through a bunch of stuff before determining that it was bad and needed to be RMA'd. One step included doing a fresh install of Windows 7.

After re-installation, drive G: just showed as being a "New Volume" that was completely empty when I viewed its contents.

Seems like something went funky after I reformatted so that the drive isn't being viewed as an encrypted drive (at least I hope that's the case).

Is it possible to re-associate the drive somehow so I can try to unlock it with my passphrase? I don't have one of those key files that you're asked to create when encrypting the drive. I do know the passphrase that was used to unlock it and didn't bother with the key file because I know I'd never forget the passphrase.

Possible to get my data back or am I hosed? Tried asking on the Microsoft Social TechNet forum but no help there after 100+ views.

Thanks for any help.

Answer:Bitlocked Drive Shows As Empty After Re-installing Windows 7?

Hello Shadow, and welcome to Seven Forums.

I hate to say this, but is sounds like you may have also formatted the G: drive as well since it now shows as a "New Volume" and no longer encrypted by BitLocker. If this was the case, then you are out of luck, and lost all data that was on the G: drive.

If you had only formatted the C: drive and reinstalled Windows on the C: drive, the G: drive would have still showed as being encrypted by BitLocker.

I sure hope that you had a backup or a system image backup of the G: drive.

Could you post a screenshot of your Disk Management (diskmgmt.msc) window showing all of youe HDD's layout to be certain if this may be the case?

I've connected an external USB drive, but when I go to My Computer it shows it as a network drive. In addition, it gives it the same name as the mapped network drive that already exists there. When I change the name of the external drive there, it then changes the name of the mapped network drive, so again they both have the same name, although the drive letters are different. Any ideas how to make the external drive appear where it belongs in My Computer, under Hard Disk drives?

I'm also seeing some other odd behavior on this computer, and since it may be related I'll mention it. When I first opened my Computer, it showed the same networked drive repeatedly, with every letter from F thru Z. I deleted them all except one, but now every time I reboot, I get a logon connect dialog that asks to reconnect one of them. So with each reboot it is adding back one of the duplicate mapped networked drives that I had deleted. I expect it will eventually end up with all the alphabet letters like it was when I first sat down at this computer.

My main concern is to get the external hard drive to appear where it belongs.

I'm running WinXP sp3...I've had my external hd for quite some time...not sure what changed but turned it on for the first time in awhile and it would "ding" like plug and play recognized it but nothing happened. I go to Windows Explorer and it freezes. I have to turn off the switch to the External Harddrive (it's an Ultra) to get anything to load. Then I try to turn it back on and I look at Device Manager...I can see it in there but when I right-click on it to see what's going on, it freezes. Any program that would access the HD freezes when it's turned on. I've been browsing the net for hours for a fix. Here's what I've tried...nothing has worked...

1) Changing the jumper settings
2) using tweakui to change drive letters
3) changing usb cables
4) power down and try all over

any ideas?

BTW- my harddrive is not clicking or doing anything out of the won't mount in Safe mode either...

Drive letter changes need to be made in Disk Management. I don't recall any TweakUI's tha changed drive letters since Win 98 and that program is for a whole different family of operating systems.

Hello indoow and welcome to Seven Forums. Couple of things to try:

1. Try using a different USB port.

2. Try changing the drive letter.

3. If you have access to a live Linux CD like Ubuntu you may find that Ubuntu will recognize the external hard drive in Computer.

4. The hard drive may be going bad. You could go to the manufacturer's web site and look for diagnostic tools to check the drive. Or you could use SeaTools for Windows from Seagate (works on non-Seagate drives as well.)

I have a Western Digital 250 GB external HD that had been working perfectly until yesterday afternoon. It has been making this repetitive whirring noise *not the clicking noise of death* and it died before I had a chance to copy the data onto another external. When I plug in the USB it makes the connection noise, but autoplay does not come up and it does not show up in my computer anymore. I did look in device manager and disk management and it does show up but it had no drive letter and it says unreadable. (I've attached a screenshot of this)

Is there any way I can recover the data off of it? Should I just take it out of the enclosure and hook it up to a desktop pc?

Answer:External hard drive broken shows up in device manager but not My Computer

It sounds like the drive itself is dead rather than the enclosure. The repetitive 'whirring' noise likely is immediately following the click of death, just the click is pretty quiet on a lot of notebook drives. If yours is a full size (3.5") drive in that enclosure, then perhaps you are right and the click of death isn't occurring.

In either case, its not going to hurt to hook it up internally, because even if it doesn't work you aren't any worse off than you are now.

Have a 1TB Iomega USB3 external hard drive that worked well on both a desktop and laptop Win7/64 system. Now it shows up as unidentified and not initialized using computer/manage/storage/disk management. Disk Management also gives the optiin to initialize it but I declined because I would like to recover the data. The power light comes on and it spins up with both a USB3 or USB2 connections and is identified as an Iomega eGo drive when I use the USB eject function.
Hard Drive Sentinel does not recognize it at all. Any suggestions appreciated.

Answer:Previously functional USB3 external hard drive shows not initialized

1. Please post a screenshot of Disk Management with your external HDD plugged in. Disk Management - Post a Screen Capture Image

2. It would indeed be prudent to recover the data before you try anything else on the HDD.

You may try to access the hard drive booting into a live Linux CD/pendrive.

Download Lucid Puppy (Ubuntu-Compatible Build) v5.2.8 ISO from

It is light and only 132.6 MB.

Make a Bootable pendrive with Rufus v1.3.2 (442 KB)

It takes less than 2 minutes to create your bootable live Linux pendrive.

For more guidance on the recovery process directly get into the heading Recovering files from the non-bootable Internal Drive - applicable to recovery from any hard drive - in Lucid Puppy way to recover files from a non-bootable computer

You may also use this tutorial by Golden to create your bootable pendrive with Peppermint3 Linux.

Hi,I have an external USB Buffalo hard disk attached to my Lenovo E73 W7 Pro PC.If i boot with it connected then the PC won't boot through to Windows until i disconnect the Buffalo.I have been into the Bios and set the boot order to not only styart with the HD but also ignore USB and CD ROM.Interestingly before i changed the Bios it would stop the boot and when i disconnected the Buffalo i would get the option to go the bios; now that i have changed the bios although it still doesn't boot through to Windows, when i disconnect the Buffalo the Windows spalsh screen appears immediately. So..My thoughts are that the bios change has been a good thing and now there is a Windows option that needs to be changed to make it boot to Windows ignoring the Buffalo until it has started. Has anyone any advice please? Cheers,Simon

Alright, I have a whole bunch of my music and videos on my external hard drive and I got a new Dell XPS 8300 yesterday. I had been using my external hard drive just fine for the past 1-2 yeas now with 2 different laptops, working fine. I plugged it yesterday to transfer all my music to my new computer and it seemed to be working fine. There was an error as the copy rate slowwed so I decided to delete and try again. I did that about 3 times and then decided to just copy the music album by album. Eventually, I don't know how it ended up happening, instead of the Hard Drive coming up as Seagate on the My Computer Tab, it started showing up as Local Disk: J on my Dell and Local Disk E on my laptop now. It doesn't matter where I plug it in. Not only that, it won't open when I try to open it. It will get 95% loaded and then just pause and stop responding. I'm completely lost.

My hard drive is Seagate 250 GB.

Answer:External hard drive stopped working, only shows up as Local Disk -- won't open

Hi, first I would run the Seagate diagnostics to check the hard drive is still healthy following this guide.

Identify the make of your hard drive and then use one of the links below to get the manufacturers diagnostic for ISO CD. Burn the image file to a CD, boot the PC with the disc in the drive and run the diagnostics. You first need to set the CD drive to 1st in the boot order in the Bios setup.

If you do not have an image burner use this free software to make the CD.

I am in between moving and have everything from old PC,s Laptops etc backed up on this device. All my college work as I am studying, all my web site stuff as I am building a website, you get the idea IT'S IMPORTANT!

Last night while doing my thing lost of stuff open, shut, open, shut, save, delete etc I once again go to MY COMPUTER to access a document and the drive shows up empty when open "this folder contains no files" however on My computer is shows it is still loaded up with all my crap.

I have tried 3 or 4 restore/rescue programs thus far to no avail. Also as I am currently of no fixed address my major PC with mega storage space in actual storage 3 hours away.

1. How can I re-visualise the files (done show hidden files) without having to restore data to current lap top with virtualy no space on it?

2. Can up restore the data to an online thing such as Google drive and how do I do that?

3. If I buy a NEW Ext. HD can I restore the data to that?

4. What program actually WORKS to recover images, word docs, exe programs everything basically. If I have to but a paid version I am happy to as I am sur that is still cheaper than taking to some rip off tech place.

Answer:External Hard Drive shows no files/my computer show approx. 600 GB occupied

Welcome to Major Geeks!

Sorry to hear about your problem. If you do not have backups of these files and have already tried several restore programs, it may be time to turn the drive over to a person or company that specialize in data recovery. (Please don't be offended by this. I've been working on PCs for over 15 years and there are many times I've had to consult a specialist as well).

Please be aware this could get quite expensive. If the drive can be recovered intact, you're likely looking at a few hundred dollars including the cost of a new drive. If the drive has to be sent for disassembly in a "clean room" to read directly off the platters, it could go as high as $1500, depending on the amount of data recovered.

Do not allow any recovery program you use personally to reformat the drive or remove/resize partitions - this could go further damage to the files.

Sorry for the bad news, but I hope this helps.

I have a problem with a new external hard drive I bought. In Windows XP, it appears as "Seagate Expansion Desk USB Drive" under Disk Drives in Device Manager, but it doesn't appear in Disk Management, where all the drives are listed. It also doesn't appear in My Computer. How can I allocate it a drive letter so I can use it? My drives go up to K, so it should be allocated L drive. Any help would be appreciated.

Answer:Seagate External Hard Drive shows up in Device Manager, but not Disk Management.

Attach the drive to a different usb port. Open a command prompt. Type
list disk
Copy and paste the result. You can do this by clicking the icon of a monitor in the menu bar Edit > Select All. Edit > Copy. Right click in your post > Paste.

I've got a 1TB Buffalo USB external drive. It worked great until about 2 days ago. It was pre-formatted to FAT32, needing to put a 10 gig file on it, I reformatted it to NTFS. No problem.

Except my Xbox, my laptop, and my PS3 didn't recognise it anymore. Only the desktop did. I checked online, it wasn't a problem, cause PS3 and Xbox only read FAT 32 hard drives... so i knew i just needed to format back, and it would all be fine.

So I tried to format it back, but FAT32 was not an option. only exFAT. After reading about for a bit i found out i could format in FAT32 from the CMD dos Prompt.

So I tried that. It stayed at 0% for what seemed like forever, and then the system shut down.

I rebooted and now my drive isn't there. It shows in device manager as "hard drive" with no extra details, but says it's working.

It shows in Drive Manager, but is listed as "Unallocated" and "not initalised"

I know i need to initialise it to get it show again, however anytime i try I get this error:
Data Error (Cyclic redundacy check)

Can someone please help? I dont care if i lose all the data on it, I just want it reformatted and reinitalised so i can start using it again.

Thanks in advance to anyone who helps in any way.

I have a desktop PC that does not come with any USB 3 ports on its mainboard. Yesterday I bought a PCI-E to USB 3.0 expansion card with two ports.

I installed the card, connected the floppy power cable, and windows 10 installed its driver with no issues. There is no yellow mark in the device manager.

First I connected my USB 3.0, 2.5" Seagate drive and windows properly recognized it and set its speed at USB 3.0. I copied a lot of files at a constant max speed of about 95 MB/s. So far everything is good.

Then I tried my 3.5" Buffalo USB 3.0 drive. No matter what I did, it simply would not connect at USB 3 speed, only USB 2. I tried both ports. The drive's external power adapter is connected.

Windows does know that it's a USB 3 device, since it shows the message "This device can perform faster if connected to USB 3.0".

The drive does come with a cable with blue USB 3 connectors.

Anyone ever experienced such an issue before?

Answer:External 3.5" Buffalo USB 3.0 drive only connects at USB 2.0 mode

In general, the first thing to try with any USB device that doesn't behave correctly (or at all) is to open Device Manager, find the device and uninstall it. If you don't currently have the device connected you may need to select 'show hidden devices' in Device Manager's 'View' menu.

If an inappropriate driver had been loaded the first time it was connected it will continue to be used on all subsequent times. Uninstalling it will make windows 'forget' and choose the driver from scratch.

I have a Buffalo ministation HD-PF500U2 500gb portable hard drive, and an ASUS laptop running Vista.

The problem is this: Whenever I plug my hard drive in, its light begins green, but turns yellow, and the computer makes absolutely no indication that it has recognised it. I went to device manager and saw a USB Mass Storage Device apparently recognised, but nothing in My Computer, and no way to access it. So I chose to 'uninstall' this Mass Storage Device on Device Manager (since Device Manager told me it was still plugged in, even when it wasn't) and then plugged my hard drive back in. I got the 'installing device driver software' message, and was told it was all fine, but the light went yellow again, and still no way to access the files.

I've tried microsofts MATS program for devices, and that tells me that some hardware changes have not been recognised, but that it has fixed the problem. It tells me this every time I run it.

Any advice?

Thanks all,

I see that derm had a similar post and got no resolution, but here goes:

I just tried to burn a short movie to my dvd-r. I was using movie editor "U-Lead 7" and it crashed during the write to dvd try. I looked at System/hardware and checked with NO DISK in the drive and yet the "disk" was graphed out as totally full. I've been able to burn DVDs before, last time just a few months ago. I downloaded Windows Movie Maker, loaded my video, but it still didn't burn because the brand new empty DVD was seen as FULL. Don't know what happened but would certainly appreciate some help with what my gut feeling tells me is something pretty simple to remedy. Wasn't able find anything of help on a google search. Bummer. Was ready to burn gift/movie of our summer school class for my pre-school children, a real treat for the little guys seeing themselves on TV.

The device manager recognizes the DVD device and says it is running normally but... wow, an empty drive that's FULL?

I have XP home, SP 3, Pentium 4 3.20 GHz, 1 G RAM. The DVD hardware is NEC.

Answer:empty DVD drive shows a FULL disc

Have you tried another blank DVD?

Sometimes (I don't fully comprehend the way this stuff works) but once an attempt to write to a disk fails, that disk is done. I'm guessing it creates a "file structure" of sorts when the write process begins and once that is done, you cannot write to it again unless it is a multisession disk.

I've had that happen to me several times over the years and I have a complete set of "drink coasters" to prove it! :-D Fortunately dvds are only about $0.25 a pop now.

Hope that helps

I bought a brandnew Buffalo 3TB external HDD Drive station (USB 3.0) (HD-LB3.0TU3-EU)
and wanted to make a second backup of my files which are on another Western Digital 3TB USB 3.0 external harddrive.

So i plugged both in and both were recognized without problem. Then i began to copy the files from the WD to the Buffalo harddrive (both attached via usb 3.0) and it just copied 1 folder and told me that the original file location is not anymore existing and stopped copying.
And somehow my WD drive was not showing up anymore.(but still my buffalo drive)
The WD even did not show up in the disc management setup!
So i decided to reboot and before i did it i removed the buffalo drive via the "safely remove hardware and eject media" button(Right at the startup corner right bottom of the screen).
Instantly after hitting this button the buffalo drive began to make a horrible repeating scratching noise, like trying to park or move the hdd heads continuously). I waited 30 secs then i pushed the shoot down button, nothing after 2 mins waiting for the shutdown of windows i pushed the reset button and reentered win8

Fortunately my wd drive with my files was recognized but not the buffalo drive anymore
At the disk management setup it gives me the initialise disk where i can choose between MBR and GUID but with both options it gives me an I/O drive error
I see it as an offline HDD and cannot do anything with it not even remove it.
And i connected it on my Windows 7 laptop, sa... Read more

Hi Techguys

I get the BSOD with the Bad_Pool_Header error message when I connect a newly purchased external Buffalo 750GB Hard Drive to my PC. When I close the empty CD/DVD burner drive on my Windows 7 machine,

I've scanned my hard drive but no such files appear.

I think this "Bluebirds" DVD was used to test my PC by the shop that

I used regedit to look in the registry, and found an entry for "Bluebirds"

I'm guessing I have to clean up the keys in "Current Media" in some way to make the
system forget about this DVD, but I don't know which fields to change.

Here are all the fields under "Current Media":

Blank Disc REG_DWORD 0x000 (0)
Can Close REG_DWORD 0x00 (0)
Disk Label REG_SZ Bluebirds
FreeBytes REG_BINARY 00 00 ... 00

Media Type REG_DWORD (0x01) (1)

I am not sure whether I should be posting this in the Windows forum or the PC Hardware because it involves both.

I have an external 320 GB Transcend Drive with a lot of important data.
Recently, I unplugged it from my PC and took to another to get some files.
One the other machine (Vista), it didn't show up as far as I can remember, thought that was strange so i brought it back to my Laptop (Win 7, Dual Boot with Ubuntu 10) and it only showed as Local Disk, I have tried to find useful information on the net but some is very vague and some is outright stupid and irrelevant.

The fact is that the HDD is not broken. When in Ubuntu I can view the contents fine and everything is there, no freeze ups or anything, but in windows the drive shows up as Local Disk, I don't think it is a drive letter conflict.

The Device shows up fine in the Device Manager.
I'm sure some of you have solved this problem as it seems many on the Internet have.
If so please tell me in a few steps how you resolved it.. I am not formatting as I do not deem this necessary since I can access my data fine in Ubuntu.

Kind Regards

I have an eSATA drive that has stopped functioning properly. I was trying unsuccessfully to install some completely unrelated software when I noticed that my eSATA drive was presenting differently. Hey, my laptop (A two and a half year old Dell studio 1735) has been running Windows Vista like a boss up till a month or so ago. Suddenly it wouldn't boot up windows anymore - it had happened before but a fresh install of the OS fixed that. So my aunt called me today and said she had a problem with her computer, i had fixed some little things in the past for them(viruses) but i this one is over my head so i turn to you all!

They have a fairly new Acer desktop running windows 7.

When I turn it on windows starts fine but no programs show on the desktop or start menu. I originally thought everything was gone but all of the virus protection loaded and seems to run fine, and I can run the programs that appear in the notification toolbar. When looking at C: it is empty, no folders, nothing! In the add/remove programs it shows everything is still installed. So i am making the assumption that all of the files and programs are still on the hard drive and intact. So at this point i am trying to figure out if this is a hard drive issue or most likely a windows problem.

Any ideas? Im a lil lost..

Answer:Windows shows that no folders or files are on the hard drive

I currently have 4 external hard drives connected to my computer. I have each of them set to sleep after an hour of inactivity. However, if I am using the computer, they stay asleep, until I delete something; anything. Any time I send something to the recycle bin, all four of my external hard drives wake up.

I would like for this not to happen. I already went to the Recycle Bin Properties and set each external hard drive to "Don't move files to the recycle bin. Remove files immediately when deleted" thinking that it would quit checking them for deleted files.

I would much appreciate any help on how to prevent these external hard drives from turning on when I delete files off of my computer. And just to be clear, I am NOT deleting files that are on the externals, they are files that are on the Computer.

I use these forums a lot when I have a question, but I have never had the need to post before, so this is my first post. If this is in the incorrect sub-forum, I apologize.

Answer:External Hard Drives Wake Up When I Empty Recycle Bin

I have EXACTLY the same issue, it's unfortunate no one replied to this

I also set all my drives to "Don't move files to the recycle bin. Remove files immediately when deleted" and everytime I delete a file anywhere ALL external my drives wake up

Is there really no way around this? Is no one else having this issue? Does no one else have an external drive attached to his PC that he wants to sleep while idle? Why is Windows checking ALL the RECYCLE.BIN folders on ALL drives when I delete a file on ONE drive?

It would be really great if someone knew something about this, preferrably some way around this, so the drives can stay asleep when I do not intend to access them but just delete a file on a different drive.

I have two 2TB Western Digital Elements hard drives (I just got the second one today), and I can't see both of them at the same time on my computer. Each one shows up and works fine individually, but if I put the other one in while one is already in there, the second one won't show up. I changed the letter of one of them, hoping that would work, but to no avail...

Answer:Two External Hard Drives, Only One Shows

Here's a thought...

If you have two identical drives, perhaps Western Digital pre-formatted them identically at the factory. If they both have the same "volume label", then maybe that's what's confusing Windows when you connect the second one.

I recommend that you change the label on one or both external drives, to be unique. Maybe call one "BigDrive1" and the other "BigDrive2" or whatever you want.

First connect one drive and let Windows assign a drive letter to it. Then open Windows Explorer or My Computer, right-click on the external drive, select Properties, and fill in the volume label for that drive.

For example:

Then "safely remove" the drive, disconnect it, and connect the second one. Then change its volume label the same way... but with a unique second label.

Now reconnect the first drive to a second USB port, and see if the drive is now accepted by Windows and assigned a second unique drive letter.
Note: if you have Partition Wizard installed, you can use it as well to plant a volume label.

Select the partition, right-click, and select "label" from the popup menu. Or, you can select the partition and select "set label" from the list of available operations on the left side.

Anyway, my hunch is that it's a duplicate volume label issue, since these are identical drives from Western Digital.

My own personal habit is to assign volume labels to my partitions implying the hard drive manufactu... Read more

Hi there,

I won't get too deeply into the harrowing saga of how two external hard drives of mine died within days of each other. Rather, I'll just say that I would like to do a virus scan on several external hard drives (including/especially the one I just got to replace the others). In other words, I want to find out if there was a virus or something in the material that I'm putting on the hard drives that makes them die. Could this be possible? If so, how can I conduct a virus scan specifically on the external drives?

Answer:Scanning an external hard drive for viruses? External Hard drive DRAMA!

In My Computer . . right click the external drive and select Scan with { name of AV }

System image restore on empty external drive I made a system backup of my C:
system partition with Windows 7
backup and restore facility on an
external disk.

Now I bought another external disk
and wanted to restore my backup to it to test the restoration on
an empty disk ( for the case of disk crash or when buying a new SSD and
adding it to the computer ).

When I boot from the Recovery CD
and try to restore the image I can exclude my current system disk and keep only the external target disk. But then I get an error message, which tells me that the
restoration misses a disk. I suppose the excluded C:-system disk.

So is there a way to restore the
image to a disk other than the current disk with the running C:-system ?

Answer:System image restore on empty external drive

Not to a External Drive.

I am trying to re-install xp pro on my Toshiba Notebook with an external DVD drive. I am able to boot from the drive and the blue "windows setup" screen begins to load.

After I press enter to set up Window XP, it says "setup did not find any hard disk drives installed on your comptuer...Press F3 to quit.

I am stumped. If I quit setup and I can reboot and load my original windows. Therefore, the hard disk is present and works fine.

How do I get the windows setup to see the hard drive and proceed with setup?

Answer:Solved: Install Windows with External Dvd Drive - Hard drive not found?

It is usually because the installation cannot recognise the SATA driver for the hard disc
If you have a usb drive load from Toshiba the sata controller drivers
so on the screen for the install you press F6 load drivers and then load the sata driver from the usb - I say usb as I presume you do not have a floppy drive
OR you can include them in a reburnt CD using nLite but that is a longer way round the problem

OR you can TRY try this

Enter your BIOS/Setup Utility
Locate the Serial ATA or SATA configuration section
I’ve seen this section called ‘On Chip Config’ on some Phoenix Award BIOS

On Lenovo/IBM ThinkPads it’s in Config > Serial ATA (Sata)
Change the mode of the SATA controller from AHCI to IDE or Compatibility
Save & Exit
Reboot and begin the Windows Setup again.
If Windows Setup successfully detects your hard disk this time then go ahead and perform the Windows Setup.
When Windows setup completes change the mode back to AHCI in the BIOS

i'm using windows 7, my external hard drive shows up in my devices and printers section but it won't show up as a drive, so i can't view any files in that external hard drive. if i put a memory card in, it shows up as a drive and a flag shows up for when i want to unplug that drive and it asks if i want to remove my external hard drive too.

normally when i turn on the external hard drive it autoplays but it doesn't do that anymore.

i don't understand why it shows up in my devices and printers but not as a drive when i open windows explorer.

i've looked into the external hard drives properties and it all says that the device is working properly.

Answer:problem with external hard drive not showing as a drive in windows 7

Go into Control Panel (classic view) ---> Administrative Tools ---> Computer Management ---> Disk Management.

In bottom-right pane, if you see a horizontal band representing a drive with no drive-letter assigned to it, that's the cause of your problem. You need to give it a drive-letter:

Right-click that horizontal band and choose "Change drive letter and paths".

I have this laptop. My question is why would you sell a computer with 32GB hard drive when you know the OS will take up 20GB? How am I supposed to use this computer? I can't upgrade the HD and why should I buy an external drive for a laptop?
I am so utterly confused.

Answer:Can't use laptop because Windows 10 is using 90% of the hard drive, what can I do besides using an external drive?

This isn't a true notebook - it's a glorified tablet/internet appliance.  It's fine as a Windows substitute for a chromebook, but forget running anything demanding on it -- it's designed for a single purpose:  to be inexpensive.

Hi All

My external HDD has quite a lot of data contained in the system volume information folder. As system restore is not activate on this drive & the drive is used specifically for imaging purposes I take it the data relates to the Win indexing service.

As I am now using a third party search application can I now disable the windows search system & if the system is disabled will this by default empty the SVI folder.

Any relevant advice would be appreciated.

Answer:Disable & empty System Volume Info folder on external drive.

Windows Search stores nothing in System Volume Information.

I have a Rosewill RX-DU100 Sata drive dock. Whenever I plug a HD into it on any of my W7 Pc's, it shows up as an internal drive. That's great for me as I use Carbonite and they only backup internal drives. I was wondering why W7 sees it as an internal and I could fool Windows into thinking other drives were internal as well?

Answer:External drive shows as internal

If you are connecting using the eSATA connection and not a usb that would basically explain it away.

I just bought and connected a WD 160gb Passport External USB Drive.
I check the Drive's directory. All's normal.

I then installed Portable Apps Suite onto the USB Drive.
Now when I check the directory of the USB Drive, I see the files/folders that are supposed to be there, which fine and dandy.

But I also see two extra things:
1. Recyle Bin
(contents exactly as the one on my desktop. If i empty it, the bin on the USB drive gets emptied. If I delete something on the desktop. The recycle bin on the USB drive shows that too!)
2. System Volume Information

AA: How did these two files get there?
BB: How do I get them off the USB Drive?

Answer:Recyle Bin|Shows up in External USB Drive

The recycle bin on the desktop is not really on the desktop. You see, when you delete a file it is moved to a (usually) hidden directory on that drive called recycle.bin. The recycle bin on the desktop shows the contents of all the "recycle bins" on all drives.

System Volume Information contains system restore points and probably some other information but I'm not sure what.

Just check "Hide protected system files..." in folder options and you won't see either of them.

Answer:1tb hard drive shows unallocated & shows error cyclic redundancy error

Hello and welcome Kishor now I have gut feeling that drive night have been damaged by the sudden power failure it could have affected the platters themselves or the controller unit.
Now I think you need to test the drive using this SeaTools for Windows | Seagate or a purely physical surface test see this Best Free Partition Manager Freeware and free partition magic for Windows 7, Windows 8, Windows Vista and Windows XP 32 bit & 64 bit. MiniTool Free Partition Manager Software Home Edition. run it and see my pic on how to set that up. It tests the actual surface of the platters and to some extent the ability of the read / write heads.

I want to get an external hard drive/dvd burner combo if there is such a thing. To make this question as simple as possible...I need a hard drive that my camera can be plugged into with the firewire. I also need the hard drive that is able to plug in to the USB2 slot on my computer, because
my new Dell doesn't seem to tolerate a firewire card which I installed and then took out and returned to the store. It froze my computer and I tried everything to stabilize it but had no luck. It did work long enough to download 10 min. or so of video and I burned that onto a cd. Thats when I found out I had a dvd-rom not a dvd burner......long story I know. Sorry. I just want to figure out the most economical way now to save my movies and burn them to dvd also using either another external dvd burner or maybe there is a hard drive/dvd burner combo?? Or should I just get two separate externals?
Again: I need the hard drive/burner to plug into my computer with usb2.
Then the firewire from the camera would go into the hard drive/burner to download the movies.

I wanted to know how to do that, because when i put on Win XP cd, it only let to put it on my pirmary hard drive, and i can't make an extran primary.

Answer:How to put windows on an external hard drive

If at all possible, you'll need to get the drivers on a floppy for your drive. Be it usb or ieee1394.

As soon as the blue installation window appears hit F6. (it should tell you at the bottom of the screen)

It will ask you to insert the driver disk. Do so and it should recognize the drive to install on.

Hope this helps.

Just noticed samsung external hd is being monitored by system restore is this a default setting and is it necessary.

Answer:Windows XP external hard drive.

No, as you only use it for backup. I would only connect the drive when required and not boot with it connected. Make sure first that no programs run from this external drive if you do boot with it connected.

Windows XP Sp2 on Compaq Presario with 2.67GHz CPU, 1GB RAM. Purchased new WD My Book Essentials 500GB External USB HD. Installed per instructions. Reformatted from FAT32 to NTSF per instructions with Windows Drive Manager. Shut down all, rebooted. Drive Manager, Device Manager, TuneUp Utilities, and Diskeeper all see the "H" Drive just fine and indentify it correctly. BUT, My Computer and Windows Explorer do not see it at all!

Changed drive letter fron H to W - made no difference. Emailed WD but have had no response. If I figure my time at minimum wage, I've spent more trying to make the @#%#@$ work than I paid for it! Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thnx.

Answer:Usb External Hard Drive & Windows Xp Sp2

You may have already tried this, but in Device Manager, uninstall the drive, reboot and let Windows XP find the drive and then it should reinstall. That's all I can think of, there are people here a lot smarter than me and hopefully one will show up with a cure if this does not work..

Edit, ooops, failed to notice the USB part of the drive. But you can try to boot with the drive hooked up and see what happens...
This happened to me once and I went into Admin tools, but I don't remember what I did. Sorry.

Hi, Can anyone recomend a good 1TB or over external hard drive that is compatible with windows 7 32bit, l bought a WD but had to do an RMA as it had a fault (so l thought) they replaced it but l still had the same problem, l sent WD an email which took over a week for them to reply only for them to inform me that the hard drive is not compatible with windows 7. If anyone knows of one that is fast and quiet with it's own power suply, l do alot of photography so l need something reliable. Many Thanks.

Answer:external hard drive for windows 7

A hard drive is just storage medium to say its not compatible with windows 7 seems extremely oddIn device manager, go to the properties for the ext hdd and changed the removal policy from the default quick removal, to best performance and everything should then work.

HiIs there someone who can advise me please?I have an old e-machine - windows Me and he is ready to retire. We have six years of our lives stored on this computer that is now chocking to death for lack of memory which has reached its memory capacity and is threatning to give up at any time.We are buying a new vista computer and would like to take all the information off the old ME computer and store it in an external hard drive so that the data can be transfered to the new vista computer when we are ready. Can anyone advise which is the best external hard drive to buy in order for us to do this.We recently purchased one which said it would work on windows Me only to relise when we got it that it did not, even though it said it did all over their website and the box it came in!!.So if anyone knows of a make that actuly works with Me then please advise. Thanks

Answer:Need external hard drive for windows ME

It is not the HD that is at fault but the ability of ME to recognise it.You either need software which used to be supplied with the external kit, or to make ME able to use USB, which is the same thing. It seems to me that data rescue is priority and you can probably buy a cheap PCI to USB card to put into your ME system and solve the connection problem straight away.Another roundabout way-If you are thinking of a new computer? When the new one is up and running "borrow" its old HD, temporarily put it in the external case case and copy everything you want to the new computer.

I have an external HDD that I've been using with my Apple laptop (OS X 10.6.8). When I plug it into my Windows 7 machine it appears under Device Manager but does not appear in My Computer and I have absolutely no idea how to access its files. Any help?

Answer:Using Mac external hard drive with Windows

Windows will not recognize MAC formatted drives. It can see them but can't deal with the files in HFS+ format so it ignores the drive/partition.

I install MACDRIVE on PCs to do exactly what you are trying to do. It's not free, but cheap enough.

I have a 250gb internal Ultra ATA hard drive enclosed in a 2.0 Usb external case. I installed it and did the formatting and was displayed that the formatting was not complete. I have not been able to re-format the disk or do anything else. My computer does not recognize the drive but I can locate the drive on the control panel where I can "safely remove items." I am running windows xp2 on HP computer originally 40gb SATA. The package instructions said to leave the external drive on master so I left it at that.
During formatting and initializing I was able to name my new drive as k:.
I have read several other threads with my same problem but none of them mention how to fix it when it is not recognized in disk management.
