Wifi connection slow on desktop but not on laptop

Question: Wifi connection slow on desktop but not on laptop

Hiya. For a while I've been experiencing that my download and upload speeds seem to vary wildly while on my computer, however they always seem to be MUCH lower than on my laptop. When using speedtest.net my laptop tends to average around 25 mbps downloading and 15 mbps uploading. Occasionally my desktop will peak and be slightly better (best I've seen today is 37.55 mbps and 19.03 mbps uploading) but the grand majority of the time it seems to hover at around 5 mbps download and 1 or 2 mbps upload. I don't understand why this is. Things I have tried:
Updating to Windows 10 on desktop (not that I am on my laptop)
Updating the drivers for my TRENDnet 300Mbps Dual Band Wireless N USB Adapter wireless adapter (tried, no need as they're up to date)
Turning off power saving mode (I don't know why this was enabled on a desktop but it was)
Turning off the windows option to "disconnect this device to save power"
Cleaning in the inside of my desktop tower
Changing my IPv4 DNS server values
And I have also tried running a full virus scan, malware scan and uninstalling every program I installed in the last month

And I know it is almost certainly not interference due to the fact that my laptop sits directly above my PC tower, both a whole floor away from the router, and the laptop does okay. For the sake of checking I have tried moving the laptop to a different room but that is not the cause of the problem. In addition to the speedtest.net results given earlier, when going to network and sharing centre and clicking on my connection, the 'speed' is listed as 6 mbps but often jumps all the way to exactly 52 mbps, with no figures in between. Very occasionally I see '78 mbps' but that will be not very often at all.

I live in a rural part of England in the UK, and my ISP is Plusnet, if this is relevant. My security type is WPA2-Personal. I am also a video game streamer, both for watching and making my own content, I mention this not as a promotional thing but it means my usage for the internet is quite high. I am not especially tech-savvy so I mention that in case it matters.

Sorry if I have missed any relevant information, and sorry to come to you with this problem. I have tried sorting it on my own, and even tried waiting for over a week to see if the problem would stop on its own but it's not. I'd be ever so grateful to anyone who can help.

It is worth noting that my signal strength on my computer varies but it tends to hover between 2 and 3 bars out of 5. Is the issue purely on that? And if so what would you recommend?

Preferred Solution: Wifi connection slow on desktop but not on laptop

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Answer: Wifi connection slow on desktop but not on laptop

Please attach a screen shot of the Networks page (don't collapse the Radar, Connection or Signal History) of the Xirrus Wi-Fi Inspector. If you need help with a screen shot see TSG Posting a Screenshot. FWIW to take screen shots with Windows Vista or latter I prefer to use the built-in Snipping Tool.

Hi all, yesterday I purchased a HP p6-2417a and have experienced some very odd problems concerning the wifi connection.
Occasionally the speeds will slow right down to a snails pace, or entirely disconnect making downloading or streaming anything near impossible. However, the odd thing is, if I leave the PC idle and locked until the display turns off, the speed goes up to a normal, consistent and stable 2MB/s, whereas if I'm using the PC it wont even go over 100kB/s, that is if I can establish the download in the first place.
So far I have tried updating my wifi adapter drivers and changing several network settings, none of which have worked. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

Just boosted my ISP BBand speed from 10MB to 30MB... the wired pc and the wifi laptop have shown great improvement (approx 40MB), however the wifi desktop is still slow. I have replaced the adapter to a new up-to-date one, (USB) and alothough it is showing small improvement it is still restricting to approx 15MB.

You should run this tunnel adaptor remover first. Too many of these indicates a driver problem and it will also ruin your connection if there are too many of those tunnel adaptors. This problem happens all the time. Click and save the zip file, then run the zip file and reboot.

You might also considering using a different driver for this network adaptor. If the problem happens again it may help to remove the Microsoft Virtual WiFi Miniport Adapter using device manager as it's known to cause connection problems such as you seem to be having.

Just use Tunnel Adapter – Microsoft 6to4 adapter Remover

I currently have a desktop that has access to the internet but it also has a wireless card. I was wondering what I can do to make the wireless card share its internet so that my laptop can use it? The desktop is directly connected to the cable modem.

This will be done via Windows XP, so I've been messing around with ICS but I can't get the laptop to detect it. I get the errror that: "An error occured while Internet Connetion Sharing was being enabled. ICS cannot be enabled due to an IP address conflict on the network. ICS requirs ethe host be configured to use 192.168.0.1. Please ensure that no other client on the network is configured to use 192.168.0.1." I can get the wireless card in the desktop to connect to the laptop via ad hoc though.

What security issues should I worry about? There are tons of other wireless users nearby and I only want a certain laptop to be able to see and access the desktop wireless card.

Hey,
I can't get my head around this: on my desktop were internet has always been working fine has started to be really really slow (I can't navegate). I have tried repairing the network, deleting temp's, restarting the router, changing my MAC... nothing seems to do the trick. I suspect something is blocking my system. I have xp SP3 on my desktop and internet runs flawlessly on linux on my portable. I'm really close on changing OS forever (it's a pity I'm a gamer).

Here is my HJT log:

My desktop's (winxp home sp3) internet connection, connected via cable to our router, is very slow at the moment, to the extent where it downloads only kbs per minute. I've tried:
different browsers (Firefox, Chrome, Opera... even IE)
disabling/removing/reinstalling firewall (PC tools plus), antivirus (avast) and program startup blocker (gogo data toolbar)
checking for spy/malware (Spybot S&D)
renewing ip address
system restore to earlier point
uninstall network adapter drivers/reboot install
different cable to router
with no success.

However my gf's laptop pc connecting via wifi to the same router has connectivity as usual.

Here are all the details I can think to provide - any suggestions to fix the problem, up to and including full XP reinstall, are welcome.

Please give detailed instruction - I'm familiar enough with XP and PCs in general, but lack detailed knowledge in this area.

Answer:XP: very slow internet for desktop via wire, as normal on laptop via wifi - help?

I don't see how the gf laptop is fine on WiFi when you have latency from the router unless she's on a totally different WiFi network, check the name of the router she's on, also do a speed test without the router and see if you still get kb instead of mbps,

This can be a number of things, how old is your router, if you have other WiFi devices hook them up to your router test the speed, hardware the gf laptop to the router see if its still fine. If it turns out to be your pc you may have a bad nic or need to reset something in the operating system.

My fiance and I are in the same room as the wireless router. My computer is hooked up to the ethernet itself, no problem there. Our roommate is in another part of the house (far away from the router), and he says he's getting insanely fast internet. My fiance's laptop (which is the Compaq F700 duo-core laptop running Vista) was working great for a week or so at this house. Then suddenly one day she comes home from work, and her internet is running like it's hooked up to 28.8k. If she hooks up to the ethernet, the connection on her computer is amazing.
So...
- Roommate's integrated Wifi is working GREAT from far away from the wireless router
- Problem computer is ten feet from the router itself and getting terrible speed
- Definitely connected to our network (with a unique name)

So as far as I can tell, the problem is not our provider, not our router, and not range. It seems to lie solely with the way the wireless software (or possibly hardware) is set up.

No one changed any settings before this happened, but the computer is set up to update automatically.

If anyone has any input that could help, we would be incredibly grateful. We're at the end of our ropes on this one.

Although I am connected to our wireless network on the Folio 13, there is no internet connection. I can, however, connect to the internet via Wifi on two other household laptops, both of them HP, so I believe the problem is with the Folio itself. I can also connect to other computers on the network on the Folio, but something is preventing it from getting on the internet. I can only get the internet via hardwired ethernet connection on the Folio. I have tried the following fixes, multiple times, without success: -Run the Windows troubleshooter for Internet/Network. It says the connection between your access point, router, or cable modem and the internet is broken. (But not on other wifi computers here--works fine.)-Reboot/Reset the modem.-Disable/Renable the wifi adapter (Intel Centrino Wireless N 1030)-Update wifi adapter driver (it says driver is up to date)-Uninstall/reinstall wifi adapter-Remove Wifi Network from list of available networks; reboot, add this network back in-Roll back all Windows updates from the past month-Searched self-help forums for a possible solution And yes, the wifi keyboard light is blue, not orange. Can someone help please?

Hi there, I've got a stable wifi network at home, several laptops, tablets, printers and a few other devices run off it absolutely fine. My new pc was built and I took it home yesterday and I cannot get the wifi to run properly.

The signal is fine (hops between 3-5bars) and my laptop next to it is connected at full 72mbps speed as seen here

The ethernet connection works 100% fine on the desktop, so I know the connection with that is good.
The wifi however, if it decides it wants to connect, it is either limited, or when not limited it shows this

I have tried the release/reset commands, and a few other options (reinstalling drivers, auto troubleshoot), but it doesn't seem to push the speed up to anything useable - at that 1mbps I can't even load a simple webpage.

Any help would be fantastic, thanks in advance

I just joined so sorry if this is in the wrong place!!
My brother has a desktop only it cannot detect the wifi when it's only a meter away! It's in a open room so there no thick walls in the way. In rare cases it will connect but it's not great. I asked my friend about it and he thinks it could be a software issue.
I'm now questioning whether it's worth buying a Pcle wifi card because if it is a software issue then a new wifi card won't help.
Does anyone know what is going on?

I've had this problem for years, guess it never bothered me much, but it occurred to me now, to ask around.

So I have a Linksys EA2700 Dual Band wifi router. But the best speed I can get out of it is 72Mpbs. My laptop won't connect any faster than that. The laptop has a Ralink RT3090 802.11n WiFi adapter. It should support 150Mbps

But the speed won't go over 72Mbps under any circumstance even if the router is in the same room. and usually it is.

The router is running in bridge mode, since I only use it as a wifi access point.

Any ideas?

Answer:Slow WiFi connection

Log into the AP, and see what your slowest connecting device is. Turn that device off. Disconnect, and reconnect the laptop and see if it's any faster.

Okay, since switching from 8 to win 7, my internet has become laggy while gaming, and speedtest.net is 1/10 of what it was or should be.

My desktop d/ls from speedtest at 22-25mbps, my laptop, at a solid 54mbps connection to the router only gets 2-5mbps.
I've restricted it to G connection, as N was bouncing alot between 32 and 140mpbs connection to the router, and forcing G settles outy my game lag.

Drivers are up todate according to intel, I rebooted my router, and as I said my wired desktop is running just fine, and it seems to be the switch to win 7 from 8.

Anyone got any ideas on trouble shooting whats up?

Answer:wifi connection very slow.

connect it via ethernet and see if the speedtests are better.
this can help see if it is an OS issue or a wifi issue.

If you have a USB wifi card that is windows 8 compatible you could try that and see if you get the same results.
While not going to help, but still something to take on board.
We have had a few people with windows 8 laptops at work who have been having issues connecting to wireless networks, and have encountered performance issues.
This is on various different wifi networks, and with different manufacturers of laptop and wifi cards.
While we do like the new detection and self configuration features, we are not impressed with the performance some users have been encountering, and have had to do a few tests on out various wifi networks to try and recreate these problems and hopefully find our own fixes.

I have a feeling both Microsoft and hardware manufacturers are encountering teething problems with the different way wifi works on 8, and I would expect a few more OS fixes and driver release to be made over the next few months.

Hi all,my name is Luca and I'm the owner of a HP ENVY 15-ae100nl.I've bought my laptop with Win 10 on December 2015.Everything was working fine but 1 month ago, right after the Win 10 update my wifi connection started to be very slow.I'm not able to load websites in a decent time, stream videos etc.  For example, when I use Chrome or Edge to check BBC News the browser brings me at a balnk page saying the the "page didn't respond" "time expired for connection". Then after 5 secs it starts to load but really really slow. This happens with all the pages that I want to load. I did some test:1- try my home connection with another laptop with (Win 7) -> everything is fine and at fully speed2- restore the system to manifacturer settings -> at the beginning it was working. Then Win 10 updated again and the problemwas still there3- I connected physically my router and the laptop with an ethernet cable and apparently the browser goes at full speed do you think that the problem is in my wireless network card? somenthing with the drivers? what should I do to resolve the problem? thank you very much for your help in advance Luca

Hi there so I bought a new windows 8 desktop from currys this week but my sky wifi is slow only about 1mb wheras my other devices run at about 8mb which include, laptops, consoles, iphone etc and all at the same time. Even turning my other devices off doesn't really speed my desktop up.
My router is only a year or so old I think so im not sure what the problem is?

Answer:My desktop wifi is slow at 1mb, everything else is 8mb

Where is the wifi on the desktop situated? It could be that the tower is partially screening the signal, what is its strength?
Have you changed channel on the router?
Is the desktop's wifi's driver up to date?

What sort of signal are you getting?Hover the mouse over the wireless icon.Have you tried changing the channel on the router, its normally set at 11 as default.Try repositioning the router incase of interference.Sometimes home cordless phones can interfere with the wireless connection

Hey guys. Upon installing the W7 build 7100 RC (64-bit) I've noticed a gross decrease in wifi speeds and stability. While running XP I averaged at about 10-12mb/s wirelessly which was very stable (1 disconnect every 5-6hours maybe). Now I'm receiving <1mb/s and disconnecting frequently which is a real hassle :/

In reality, even the speed I had on XP was slow considering that my fathers macbook pro reaches speeds of 60-70mb/s wireless from the same place as my stationary stands. I'm well aware of the fact that I have a 54mb/s cap on my network card, but I still think that my network connection should be stronger. Reality aside, I was doing fine with 10-12mb/s despite knowing that somehow I could be getting a faster connection and now it's really unbearable to have <1mb/s.

I've followed tonnes of solution guides on how to set-up wifi on W7 without any success. I've tried countless drivers, let the W7 wizard find appropriate drivers for me, turned on and off Ipv6, changed homegroup settings, messed with the registry and more - Now I don't know what to do next.

One interesting thing (although perhaps trivial?) I noticed while downloading via uTorrent last night was that in the Resource Monitor it said that the network utilization was only at 1% despite me downloading at 100kb/s (which should be more then 10% from uTorrent alone according to the speed test conducting right before). Could this have anything to do with it?

There are plenty of driver problems with WIFI on Win7 (audio appears to be a common problem, as well) so I would recommend ensuring you have a solid driver installed.

Fill out your system specs via your profile and we can better help you.

I would also recommend using the 7201 build, it's the last 'real' RC client that was released before RTM was and unless RTM (b7600+) is an option for you, 7201 might be a better solution.

Hello,
I have a 300mbps fiber connection at home. The router provided by the company is an Askey RTF3505VW, which, does contain 802.11n.
Cable connection is just fine but wifi is divided in 2 frequencies: 2.4 and 5ghz.
The 5ghz does output the 300mbps but only works on my phone (a galaxy s6) and my housemates Apple laptop (don't know which version), apart from that none of the devices connect to that.
The 2.4ghz frequency does connect to everything but the speed is very different, going only at 60mpbs on my phone, and on a laptop between 3 and 5 mbps which is nothing. Tried updating drivers, changing wifi channels, nothing worked. Any tip on how to get it wirking without having to change the card itself?
Another question: if i buy a good router, connect it by cable to the router provided by the company (which would give the 300mbps) would the new router be able to broadcast the 300mbps over a 2.4ghz wifi so all the devices would connect and get this speed or close to it?
Thank you in advance,
Kind regards

Answer:Wifi connection slow at 2.4ghz

You can try going into the router via the internet and disabling the 5 ghz and just using the 2.4ghz,
Or change the channel in the router to see if that helps.

Hi!
Im having some extremely annoying problems with my HP pavillion dv6... It seems to me that I'm either infected by some malware/virus type of thing (although I have scanned it with 3different programs..) or the computer my just simply be crap..I dont know, and I really hope someone on this board can help me! :)
The problem is that the DL speed I get from the integrated wifi card is as low as 0.3mb/s to MAXIMUM 3mb/s (my contract gives 30mb/s).. When I plug in an external wifi card/antenna I will recieve between 25-30mb/s which obviesly is A WHOLE lot better than the integrated one..What can be the cause of this..?! Just for "fun" I speedtested my ipad, even further away from the router than my laptop and got a whooping 29.34mb/s.
I have attached pictures of the speedtests below (didnt want to add images into the thread as I dno if its allowed on this board)
ANY help is greatly appreciated, I cant stand having 1-2mb/s on a GOOD day when I'm paying for 30mb/s :(

Hello guys!
I got strange problem. Yesterday everything was ok. I got 60mbit connection(ethernet). It's normal when you connect via wifi that u got like 30% slower connection(i had about 40-45mbits). Today I got like 3mbits. I dont know whats going on. I think that the problem started after doing updates with ninite.com. I have tried almost everything! Reinstalling drivers, rebooting, scanning with AV, dealing with power management. What else can I do?

Answer:Slow internet connection via WIFI

Did not need the IPConfig info. Why are you also downloading updates from some unknown third party website? You most likely have downloading sketchy updates, that is causing your problems.

If you want to update software. Let the software update from the software manufacturer site that created the software. Using third party sites can allow you to infect your computer.

Running a Windows 7 machine - has always connected and worked just fine.

Today all of a sudden my connection has become brutal to nothing.

My wifi tells me I am connected at 58 Mbps.

I have another laptop connected to the wifi in the same room, same 58 Mbps, and it is hitting web sites immediately. The W7 computer is hitting them, and literally taking minutes for pages to come up.

I have run malarebytes, no malware. I have disabled Norton.

Any ideas would be appreciated.

I would start by resetting the router, be sure and check the security etc. is still working after the reset, if not create a new SSID, password etc.

After that try creating a new wireless profile for the connection.

I just bought a laptop yesterday along with a router. The installation of the router was painless and my amd k6-2 desktop was running like usual as if nothing had changed. It was pretty much the same for the laptop but when it comes to opening a web site it doesnt work or it is ridiculously slow to the point where it wont finish loading the page.

What is happening, I am anxious to get this resolved. The communication seems fine between the router and the wireless card. It shows 11mbps and 5.5mbps most of the time but internet is slow or non existant. Please help, thanks

Hi, When is the last time the computer works fine? When is the last time youve run an antivirus scan? When is the last time youve updated the Bios version of your computer? Here are steps you could try to fix your wifi issues: Perform hard reset: Hard reset a notebook with removable battery Turn off the computer.Remove the computer from any port replicator or docking station.Disconnect all external connected peripheral devices, such as USB storage devices, external displays, and printers.Unplug the AC adapter from the computer.Remove the battery from the battery compartment.Press and hold the Power button for about 15 seconds to drain residual electrical charge from the capacitors that protect the memory.Insert the battery and plug the AC adapter back into the notebook, but do not connect any of the peripheral devices.Press the Power button to turn on the computer. On the Options screen, select Continue and continue to Windows 10.If a startup menu opens, use the arrow keys to select Start Windows Normally, then press the Enter key.Reconnect each of the peripheral devices. After you have completed these steps, run Windows Update and HP Support Assistant to update all device drivers.Hard reset a notebook with a sealed or non-removable battery Turn off the computer.Remove the computer from any port replicator or docking station.Disconnect all external connected peripheral devices such as USB storage devices, external displays, and printers.Unplug the AC... I have a desktop and 3 laptops. The desktop has wired internet connection, ethernet straight to the router and the 3 laptops are wifi. The wifi speed is fine when the desktop is on. But when I turn off the desktop, the wifi has big drop in speed for a few mins and go back up again. It continues to do that every 10-15 min. This only happens when I have the desktop off. What can I do so it runs normally like when the desktop is on?

have you tried unplugging the Ethernet cable connection for the desktop - BUT at the router end and see what happens then

can we see an xirrus graph and let it show the drop and post a screen shot

Run Xirrus Wi-Fi Inspector
Download and install
If you cannot access the internet with this PC, then you will need to copy the program across to the faulty PC
Save the file to a USB flash drive or other removable media. Plug it into the working computer with internet access and copy the file and install the program.
You will now need to take a screen shot and copy that back to the working PC and attach the screen shot in a reply on the forum here.

Then run and install the program - on a wireless enabled PC/Laptop
if you get an error - You need will need to have NET Framework installed for the WiFi Inspector to function.

Okay so I've been battling this issue for months on end to on avail. I've got a Gigabyte BC-WB867D-I wireless adapter in my desktop. I've taken it to multiple places and it reached 30 mpbs + download speeds but when I'm at home I get maybe 3 mbps download if I'm lucky. I don't think its our isp because we get up to 50mbps and my laptop, phone, iPad, as well as all 6 roommates get internet download speeds of at least 20-30 mbps with 10+ devices connected at once. Only my desktop pc suffers from poor connection. Any help would be greatly appreciated. If you'd like more details feel free to ask! Also I'm running Windows 10 professional if that matters.

I use it for gaming and for school work so its important to have decent connection. :/

Network on my Lenovo Yoga running W8.1 works fine over both wireless and Ethernet (USB dongle).

I have an iMac initiating a Remote Desktop connection to the Yoga via a direct Ethernet cable between the devices. Everything works fine on the W8.1 device except the WiFi can no longer connect to any access points and thus the Yoga has no Internet/network access--it just fails immediately when I select an access point for connection.

I do see an Event ID 8000 from NETwNe64 around the time of this failure; not sure if it's the same cause.

If I log back into the Yoga (and thus break the Remote Desktop Ethernet connection and take over that session), wireless works perfectly again. Thus it is clear that WiFi is only down when the device is accessed via RDP over Ethernet.

Any suggestions how to troubleshoot?

Answer:WiFi fails on W8.1 with Ethernet Remote Desktop Connection

Try something for me, when you launch your RDP session go back into your wireless and see if it will prompt you for a security key.

I am researching this particular situation to see if it is possible, before we invest the time and money to go much further...
I have a corporate intranet that has desktops and wired access to network shares, etc. I also have a number of netbooks that have to operate in remote locations with no wireless or wired internet connectivity, using data loaded at the office.
I need to securely transfer database files to several netbooks in turn without using USB drives or other removable media, or wireless, which have the potential for loss, risking the data. A secure, wired connection is our preference.
Our plan is to use a USB to RJ-45 connector (such as an Apple USB Ethernet Adapter) to connect to the netbooks. Then, plug the USB in the desktop, and plug the Ethernet cable to the netbook's RJ-45 port. For proof of concept, we've done some initial testing with one device, and have managed to find modified drivers to get the Apple device to work under Windows 7, and looking at it's properties can see a successful Ethernet connection. Setting up the share is more complicated.
We control the hardware and software on each machine, so we intend to make an simple user-friendly GUI application to move the data back and forth (before and after its use at the distributed netbook locations). I suspect that this should be simply a mapping of the netbook as a drive, and copying to and from.
Can anyone provide any advice or guidance as to the best way to accomplish this? Any specifics on settin... Read more

Answer:Connecting a laptop to desktop using USB to ethernet while keeping desktop network connection?

I've done exactly the same thing with a client company in the past. In that case it involved transferring sensitive banking data to laptops which were to be used by the client's representatives in the field.
My preferred method, given the need for avoiding removable media, was the one you describe in your final paragraph; we instituted a policy of copying to a dedicated desktop and using a single authorised member of staff to disconnect the desktop from the network after the copy process, copying the data to the laptops, disconnecting them, deleting the desktop copy and reconnecting the desktop.
It worked smoothly, and was very secure, given that one person handled the process. As far as I know the client still follows the same procedure.

Okay, I have a PC in my bedroom which is at the end of my house, and the actual internet source (Thomson/BigPond) is at the other end. Between the internet source and the computer, there are several televisions, lights, speakers, etc that may be causing interference. It could also the the channels in which my items are in.
My PC doesn't have an actual wireless connection thing built in, and that's why I have this netgear router thing.
My PC is a HP pavilion.

The connection at which it receives is awfully frustrating. It's agonizingly slow, taking several minutes to load a page - that's if it actually decides to load up.

There is another netgear router a few rooms closer than my PC is that recieves internet properly.

Is there anything I could do to fix my connection speed/connection in general? Or just improve it at all?
Any help is appreciated!

Hello everyone. I have recently update my Y50-70 to Windows 10 Pro. My issue is that when i connect with Wi-fi to the internet i have about 15mbps while when i connect with ethernet i have around 35 mbps. My modem is 2 meters away from me and when i run the test with my Android phone through the same page for internet speed i get around 30mbps. I have the Broadcom 802.11ac network card. When i install the driver for this card from lenovo ( the WLAN Driver (Atheros, Broadcom, Realtek) driver) i cannot connect to any Wifi and sometimes i got a screen freeze so i forced reboot. I have tried to unistall the driver from device manager and then reboot my pc but i got the same result in speedtest.I called lenovo and they told me to wait until the driver is udated again (last update July of 2016) but they didn't know if the driver will be updated soon. Any solutions?Sorry for the bad english.

Answer:Lenovo Y50-70 slow Wifi internet connection

I assume the problem come after Windows 10 Pro right? So, the problem would be either Driver... or just that Windows 10 try to download update to itself when you tested it. Well, mostly it is not Windows 10 updated but I think you should use stock Windows 10 Wifi Driver. My Wifi in Y50-70 is Atheros AR956x and using Windows 10 Driver right now. The Wifi speed look great. The speed is around 40Mbps (about 5 MB/s). I'm not using driver from Lenovo not because it is slow, but it is outdated. You can try using 'Iobit Driver Booster' to get newest WiFi Driver for your system and try that too. Although, I did have it installed in my system but I didn't have it install any newer WiFi Driver as I fairly pleased with driver from Microsoft.

Hi everyone.i've recently bought the pc and  this problem shows up when i'm not in the same room of the router ( the speed of the other computers is basically the same in every room of my house). As a matter of fact near the router my download speed it's about 30 mbps while in other rooms the speed can't barely reach 1 mbps.I can understand a substantial loss of speed due to the distance but i don't think that the problem it's the distance itself.I've tried to update the driver of the network adapter (Broadcom 802.11a) and other things but i can't fix the situation. My operating system it's Windows 8.1.Thank you and i hope you can help me

I fixed most of my Wi-Fi issues today by updating bios. I hadn't before because it said that the current version and the one I was trying to update to were the same. Today, I thought, "What the heck? It won't hurt anything." After the subsequent reboot, Wi-Fi works awesomely.

Maybe it could work for you too?

Hi all,I have Thinkpad T460s, Windows 10, WiFi adapter is Intel AC 8260, driver is 19.50.1 - latest.Router is Asus RT-AC88U, internet link 150Mbps.From few days I'm experiencing extremely slow connection/transfer speeds, like 100Kbs. I'm connected to 5GHz band.  I tried resetting TCP/IP stack, reinstalling the driver, rebooting the router, none of that helped. I don't have antivirus or external firewall installed. An Ipad which is sitting next to my laptop is hitting easily 90-100Mbps.However when I connected the laptop to my work wifi, it appers to work normally, so logically it is something between Asus and Intel module in thinkpad.Any ideas what can I do to find out what is happening - and solve the issue?many thanks for any inputChris

Hi, I have this problem since some time now, I have 2 laptops and T430 and an Ideapad Y510P. The T430 connects to the internet with no issues but the Y510P is taking too much time to resolve a web page, after 10 or 15 seconds I get a timeout error on the browers, then I need to reload the page and I eventually access the webpage.Other problem is that seems to be that loading the web page sometimes it takes too much time, just like you had a 56k Fax mode where the pics load just one by one and suddenly it loads all at once. I have a Intel Wireless-N 7260, however, Lenovo support web page tells me that I should have a Qualcomm Atheros adapter. On device manager, the Qualcomm Atheros refers to the ethernet adapter (not wifi) and when searching intel for latest driver the 7260 is for Bluethooth only, which is odd. Anyone know how to fix this issue? by the way, other Laptops and cell phones connect to the router without any issues, only the Y510P is having this long waits and timeout issues. Thanks

Answer:Y510P WIFI slow internet connection

Go to Control Panel/Uninstall Programs and check if you have Intel Proset software and Intel Bluethood installed. If one of them is missing try going to Intel's website and download the program. You may also download the latest Bluetooth driver if you like. Install the Bluetooth driver first then the Intel Proset program. If the installer present an option to uninstall the old program choose this and install the new one thereafter.

I have a work laptop and a desktop at home. When I work from home, I use remote desktop connection to connect to my laptop using my desktop. Today, I've been having nothing but problems.

The connection to my laptop keeps getting lost. Sometimes it will be really slow, or freeze, and then it will lose the connection completely.

I'm not sure why it happens, but I thought I'd try testing a wired connection to see if the problem is with the wifi. Unfortunately, when I set my laptop to a wired connection, the remote desktop connection will not work.

On my desktop, I can see the laptop in the network so I know it's on the same network. And the internet on the laptop works as well.

I've tried rebooting my modem/router, but that didn't seem to help. I also tried rebooting both machines.

So my questions are:

1. What would cause the remote desktop connection to keep getting lost? Could it be wifi related?
2. How can I get the remote desktop connection to work when my laptop is wired in instead of on wifi?

Both machines are running Windows 7 if that matters.

I just moved into a new place and when I initially set up my pc and tested the wireless connection things seemed fine, but now, a day later, it's painfully slow and unstable, but it still works fine on every other device around the house (there are 3 mobiles and 1 smart tv besides my desktop using the network but turning htem all off had no effect).
I just did a speed test from my phone and it said 40Mb/12Mb, I did the same from the desktop and got .02MB/1.5MB, I tried sharing the mobile's wifi connection through usb tethering but the desktop still got a slow connection.
I'm about 5m away from the router, I cannot change its settings because I don't have an ethernet cable and the router management menu is blocked from wireless.
Using windows 10, Realtek TRL8192EU wifi adapter, router is a zon hub 2.0 (not sure the model exactly, a user review says hitron bvw 3653 v2 but googling it gives me a different looking router).
Any help would be great, if there's anything I forgot to mention let me know.

2.4g 24mbps

desktop
2.4g 10mbps

fresh install windows 10
brand new asus PCE-N53 wireless card( I belive its a dual band as well)

brand new c3700-100nas modem router

Comcast cable 75mbps service
the cables have been checked by Comcast 3 times already so they are good
I'm guessing something to do with windows 10 that I'm getting such slow speeds?

Answer:slow wifi speeds on on desktop but not on cellphone

Updated your drivers? Is the card within range of the router? Does the antenna for the card have clear access / not obstructed by objects?

I have spent 2,500 dollars on this Dell Machine. Ever since I?ve had it I have not really enjoyed it. It really is sad. This machine was a dream machine and when I bought it, i can enjoy it, due to the WiFi issues  and internet connection.
I turn my phone to a hotspot, when the Dell XPS 15 connects to it, the internet connection is extremely slow, slow, when I connect to my iPad or PS4 to another Windows machine and I don?t have a internet connection issue.
I ever reset my computer and make it brand new and got the same issue, on this machine

Hi, Twi days ago I bought a ThinkPad Edge S430, the wireless wifi connection is so slow and ramdonly lost conection. I have made a speed test with my previous machine a the new one in the same wifi networw and the connection is so slow in my new one. I have put also in the power management setting optimal performance like I read could be a issue about this but the problem is still happening. The machine has windows 8.  Any advice, do you know which one could be the issue? Best Regards.

Answer:Slow wifi connection ThinkPad Edge S430

Hi, juancevi

Is there an Intel wireless card in your S430? If so, then I would recommend checking out  Control Panel ? Programs and Features. Here you can uninstall certain programs from your computer. One that you may find is called the Intel Management Engine. If available, I would recommend uninstalling it. This program has caused issues for me in the past and removing it has helped my WLAN be more stable, so it may help you as well.

Best of luck. Let me know how it goes,
Adam

I just moved into a sublet for a temporary few weeks while.
I checked the WiFi here during the day and the speed was rock-and-roll, and handed over my rent and deposit.

Now in the evenings, I can't even open my email because the connection is so slow. My iPhone (sends imessages over WiFi and couldn't even get a text message out without a thirty-second lag.)
I am guessing that the other people that live here, are Netflixing and streaming the whole night.

I don't know that much except the bare-basics of networks but
Is there anything that I can do to allow myself a little more bandwidth on the network? (preferably making this adjustment from my computer?)
I know this is a bit of a hacking question.... what are the options?

I have a Dell 1390 Wlan in an Inspiron 1501 running Windows XP. A few weeks ago we upgraded our Internet DSL from 500 kbps to 3mbps. I'm achiving 3m with a hard connection, but still only 500k via WiFi. To see if it was the wlan card, I installed the software and used my husband's Netgear USB wireless adapter on my Inspiron. With it I get a 3m connection. Shouldn't the Dell 1390 be able to handle a 3m connection? Is there a setting somewhere I need to change?

Answer:Slow WiFi connection w/Dell 1390 WLAN

There should be no reason that your machine can't sustain a 3mbit connection.

Top suspect would be the wireless drivers, update them from the Dell support pages.

I just bought a new computer and it has a wireless adapter already plugged in the USB internally. It is a Realtek RTL8811AU Network Adapter. I thought that was the problem but looked into it more and some people on a different forum told me that it is not a problem with Windows 8 and it is a problem with the Wireless Adapter. I'm not too sure now, because the reviews said that the adapter worked well after the downgrade. I need some opinions and help because being on a slow internet connection is killing me. I have had this laptop for almost a year now. Everything has been working great until recently. First I noticed that I kept losing my wifi connection now and then (other laptop and wifi devices kept on working fine). Then I made some changes to what programs were to run on start up  cos' start up was so slow (I really don't remember what), and then I noticed that my wifi got messed up. Here are the issues:1. The network won't connect and  I usually end up with a "it's taking too long to connect" message.3. I have to cancel and try again, and it eventually connects. So my question is - what can I do to fix this? Any help would be most appreciated.

Over the last few months the wireless performance of this laptop has dropped like a rock.I have a 100mb connection, yet wirelessly this laptop maxes out at abour 10 at any time. Wired it is more than ok.The other laptop we have is perfectly fine as well as the other 2 PCs we have connected, so I'm 99.9999999% certain that this is an issue with the wireless card in this machine. What options do I have to potentially remmedy this situation?Wired isn't one for the forseeable future since we don't want even more cables running all over the place. I have attempted a clean reinstall of the OS and all drivers to eliminate a software issue as well. Thank you for any help or suggestions.

How do I hookup my laptop to my desktop to use the wifi so that I can update my Compaq Presario? Is it even possible?

Answer:LAPTOP 2 A DESKTOP FOR THE WIFI?

I don't know of any easy way to connect your laptop to the desktop to use its wifi. In the old days, it could be done by hacking a network cable and crossing two particular wires.
if you need drivers for the laptop, download them from the desktop and transfer to a USB stick or burn them to a CD/DVD. Otherwise, you'll need to connect your laptop to your router or modem with a network cable.
Try google for a video for accessing  and reseating your Compaq model's  wifi card, and checking that it's antenna wires didn't fall off the little connectors
Or you can buy a USB wifi adapter from places like Best Buy or Amazon, which is easier than replacing a wifi card, as the cards are made in a couple of different slot widths and card lengths, depending on your laptop model.

Hi all,

I have just moved into a new place and I can only access the internet via the wifi on my laptop.
I would like to share that connection to my desktop which only has LAN.
After trying to do this via ICS I have no been successful. Both systems are running win7.
The wifi adapter is connected to the internet (via modem) and i have enabled ICS sharing.
I have then plugged in the laptop to the desktop with an ethernet cable and the desktop does not recognize a network and doesn't have internet access.

Where have I gone wrong with this process or is there a different way I should be doing it?

Cheers

Hello all,

First off, I have been searching these forums for several days and have seen a number of people reporting slow wireless connections in Windows 7. Which was comforting, knowing I was not alone - but unfortunately I've yet to find the answer in any of the older posts, so I am hoping that making one of my own will help resolve this. Sorry to add to the noise, but I'm kind of out of ideas. Now for the problem:

Initially my wireless speed in Windows 7 was comparable to what I got under XP - mainly 54mbps but occasionally dropping lower, but nothing out of the ordinary. However, I've recently noticed that I am never going about 18mpbs now on my wireless connection, and the actual speed seems to be bottlenecked even slower than that. Example, here is a speed test I just ran.

Here is the results of my ipconfig /all

Answer:Slow Wireless Speeds - Laptop is fine, Desktop is SLOW

I almost don't believe it, because I could have sworn I had tried this in the past. I changed the broadcast channel from 10 to 1 after doing another WiFi channel search and seeing a new network broadcasting on 8. I was still getting good signal strength, but I figured it couldn't hurt. About 30 seconds later my wireless speed jumped back up to 54mbps and this is the speed test now.

Glad its fixed, but I almost don't trust that this will stay fixed. Going to leave this open for a day or two to see if anyone else has any suggestions that I might want to try.

I have a Dell Vostro 3700 32 bit running Windows 7 Professional and recently been having intermittent issues with its wifi connectivity.
Although the laptop's wifi scans and detects my wireless router (which is located in my downstairs room, whilst I am upstairs in my bedroom) showing signal strength as Fair, Good or Excellent at times it is unable to connect to it giving the error message "wireless was unable to connect to..."
If I take my laptop in the same room as where the wireless router is located then it connects instantly without issue, however, when I take it upstairs that is when it has issues connecting even though the network is visible in the wireless network connection list.

The Wireless router itself that is located downstairs works fine, as I do not have any such connectivity issues whilst in my bedroom with other devices like my phone and tablet which connect with excellent signal strength from the same room I have been having intermittent issues with my laptop.

Connecting via Ethernet has no issues whatsoever.

I have tried the following but to no avail.

netsh winsock reset
netsh int ip reset
ipconfig /release
ipconfig /renew
ipconfig /flushdns

After I turn on my HP Pavilion g7 laptop, it will automatically connect to my Wi Fi and after a few minutes, it will just disconnect and it won't connect back again unless I shutdown the laptop and start over. Each time, it will only stay connected for just a few minutes. I don't know what the problem is. It only started doing this 2 days ago, it has always worked before, connect automatically and stay connected while I was using the laptop, now I have this problem where it will only connect when I turn on the laptop and just disconnect after a few minutes. I have other devices, phones and tablets that connect to my WiFi router and they don't have this problem. Please advise.

Hi everyone,
My ASUS Q302LA laptop which I bought last month has wifi connection issues. Was running fine at work and home, but recently (as last week) began showing that my connection is 'Limited' which makes it pretty useless. No way of connecting to the internet with that.
I've tried:
1. Forgetting the network and reentering my password
2. Restarting the laptop
3. Switching on airplane mode and redoing steps 1 through 2 again.
Nothing seems to help. Also, I know its not my connection either as the laptop I'm using to type this obviously works fine and the other devices and tablets I have work great in regards to wifi connection.
Any ideas how to fix this?

Open command prompt
Type ipconfig /release

I just bought a new laptop a Lenovo ideapad y500 running windows 8 64bit with a intel centrino wireless adapter and im currently experiencing internet flucuations at random intervals.

My internet speed is rated for 50mbs and when im lucky on wifi ill get up to 20mbs. I could generally live with considering wifi is not exactly ideal but the download speeds will often drop to .5-2mbs and at times go to 0 resetting the connection will sometimes bump it back up for a short while but it will again eventually drop down to minimal speeds.

to save time ill state the troubleshooting methods ive already attempted
uninstalled/reinstalled wifi drivers
updated wifi driver
flushed dns cache via cmd.exe
updated other drivers aswell as performed windows updates
uninstalled and replaced mcafee antivirus with avg
ran ccleaner to uninstall bloatware along with fixing registry errors
accessed my router and changed my wireless settings and security settings

my ping has begun to fluctuate aswell normally being around 8-12ms now jumping from 32-120

id also like to clarify that i bought and returned an asus g75 windows 8 laptop a few days ago encountering the same issue i at first thought it was the wireless adapter but now encountering this issue im beginning to question my router which is an actiontec v1000h

Hi all. I have a laptop in my dorm room about less than block away and I have a very weak signal (1 bar or less) and I want to know if I could be able to hook on the net with the this network. I've gotten about 45,000 packets sent to me when I had 1 bar but none were received. This is probably because the signal is so weak. Is there anyway I can increase the network strength? Maybe I can buy something like a router or antenna or something to make it reach the network. I have no idea, I'm new to this stuff. Any help is appreciated. Thanks.

My Wifi at home is very good - it reaches the entire house at full strength constantly, and most devices encounter no problems. However, every now and then, the Wifi cuts out ONLY on my laptop for no longer than a minute (this is roughly every hour). It means I cannot play online games, as I keep randomly disconnecting mid-game.

For the past week I have searched the internet for help on my problem, but to no avail.

Firstly, I found some advice on updating my drivers, which I did. They are up to date. Problem is still there. I then found advice to roll these back to a previous version. The "rollback" button was greyed out - I couldn't do that.

A few days later, I found a site that said to uncheck a box that made the computer switch off the driver at low battery. Almost certain this was the problem, I unchecked it and tried again. Alas, my celebration wa... Read more

Desktop is XP
Laptop is a Dell Vista
Wireless G belkin router

Came home from work yesterday and internet wasn't working. None of the ususal fixes worked so I had to call and get it working again. No idea what caused it not work in the first place.
So then my brother lets me know he can't get the laptop he used to connect to the internet. I check my laptop upstairs and it won't connect either. Have tried all kinds of things and nothing works.
If some one could give some step by step advice I would really appreciate it.

Thanks,
Amanda

I am having problems with my laptop, it seems to be 'forgetting' that it has connection to the internet via wifi.

Upon startup it connects automatically, but after a few minutes, when I click on a link on a page nothing happens and a yellow warning sign appears on the wifi icon at the bottom to suggest there is no connection. However upon waving my mouse over this it generally re-connects.

I have tried this at another location with the same issue and other laptops connect fine without interruption.

It is a Toshiba C660 running Windows 7 Home Premium.

Any ideas why is doesn't hold stable?

Thanks

James

Hello:

I use my Smartphone as a Hotspot, I have me Dell laptop set-up to connect to the Smartphone "Hotspot" and for several months I had no problems using the internet with this set-up. But in the last month, the few times I have worked with this set-up the Dell laptop intermittently looses the connection I have to keep going into the laptop settings to reconnect.

The Smartphone "Hotspot" remains on throughout.

Can anyone let me know what might be going on with the laptop, that wasn't before.

Let's start it fast okay?
I own a laptop and a desktop.
And, I wanted to share connection between them via wifi.
http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/u...02april08.mspx
This guide works on me.
But I encounter a problem while connecting to the host (My desktop)
It's like, you can't connect after you reset your connection or something, and it says "No Internet Access", and you can only connect just when your PC were freshly restart. IF you hand slipped and clicked the disconnect, you cannot connect just after you restart the PC again.
Steps repeated.

Anyone has idea about it?
Thank you

Please update your system specs. The link is in my signature.

Are all computers running Windows 7? Which computer has the internet connection? Did you install the operating systems yourself, or did they come preinstalled? Did you install the drivers, or did Windows install them automatically? Do those computers support Windows 7? Have you reviewed any Windows 7 ad-hoc guides, or just the XP guide that you found?

Hello All, I need some help. Googling has not been able to let me solve this alone, so I am coming here to find an expert. My laptop cannot now connect to wifi. It used to be able to and everything was fine, then the internet company updated the wifi we receive to a 5GHz connection and the laptop cannot even detect it. It can see the modem/router and it can let me type in the password but it can't connect now, I think it is because it is only the old connection it sees and this may now be deactivated by the internet company, but I am not sure. A bit of Googling tells me that it may be something to do with a G or N connection (think this is an N one) and I went to the Acer website, found another WLAN driver, uninstalled the old Broadcom one, installed the new Atheros one and it still won't connect. Does anyone have a fix to this? If my laptop, which is not even a year old, cannot connect to any wifi, it's basically useless as I can't use an ethernet cable when I go on holiday. I do not know how to find out, exactly, what wifi adapter is in the laptop. The laptop is an Acer Aspire ES1-512-C6XH running Windows 8.1. Like I say, I only got this laptop around Christmas 2014 and up until last week, everything was fine. Any help would be very much appreciated. Thank you.

Answer:Laptop can't see 5GHz wifi connection

from what info you provided I would first uninstall the atheros drivers and put the broadcom drivers back in as they are two different chips, if the original driver was broadcom then use that driver only, next, in a lot of laptops the wireless chips are designed to work on the 2.4 ghz frequency only regardless that it reads "N" connection, the 5ghz band is an "A" connection and your wirless chip is likely a "B,G,N" so it will not see the 5ghz band, if you want to use the 5ghz band you would need a different wireless connection ie an usb adapter with an "AC" connection of which would then see the 5 ghz band.B,G,N 2.4 ghz connection is very common to be used as it will connect to pretty much any router connection without having any hassle but speed wise it is slower with a connection range of 72 mbs to 150 mbs but still very useable, an "AC" connection will connect around 400 mbs on the 5 ghz band.Hope this helps you understand.

hi I have a dell laptop 1545 that is now running windows 8 for a week and been great, 100% with no issues from a new clean install...
however today grandchild was pressing keys on it, and it think he pressed the F2 off key
I have chacked various forums and it seems that either F2 or Fn+F2 switches it back on, sometimes if you hold it down for 30 sec to a min
this isn't working
ive checked the hardware and it says the cards are working properly...
is it something to do with the fact the laptop used to run Vista and dell software, now its been upgraded to windows 8 these f2 functions don't work?
if that's the case why does it seem its switched it off?
I see the internet connection in the start tray with greyed out with "not connected- connections available" why is this so hard?

Answer:HELP, wifi connection switched off on laptop

I have recently moved house to share with someone who has an existing wifi broadband set up. My laptop picked up the connection no problem but his wifi is security protected with a key. My flatmate set up the connection on my laptop for me using the cable connected to the router and has saved the network key on there too. Now my laptop recognises the network, connects to it by default fine with no problems. It then works brilliantly for about the first half hour I use it for each evening and then just stops working. Webpages won't load, I get admin error pages come up or it just goes on loading forever but nothing comes up. When the laptop does this it still says it is connected to the network and that signal strength is full. Oddly I can also pick up a neighbour's unprotected network with a signal strength of only limited which is faster to use once the laptop does this odd fault after the first half hour or so. Any suggestions because I'm stumped!

Answer:Problem with wifi connection on laptop

It could be that you are both using the same channel on each others router. I think channel 11 is default one.click here

After I bought a new Toshiba laptop and started using it wireless, my wife's slightly older laptop started disconnecting from wi fi freequently.Mine works great with ''excellent'' connectivity, whereas hers often falls and sometimes reads ''good'' connectivity.

Answer:i have lost my wifi connection to my laptop

It depends on the "range" capability of the wireless adapter within the laptop.Yours evidently has a better coverage range than your wife's, so your signal strength is higher than hers. Her wireless performance will have been further affected by the simple fact that it's now having to compete with another user on the same network.

Hi gurus,

I'm having some problems suddenly with my wifi on my Windows 8.1 machine. This is a desktop PC with a small USB wifi-N adapter from TP-Link.
Every time I boot, it gets only a limited connection with my router. Simply disconnecting and reconnecting solves the issue.

The TCP/IP stack reset doesn't work. It gives me the "access denied" error. I have full permission over the netsh.exe (changed that already) and I run an elevated command prompt.

I have also already unmarked the "allow Windows to turn this device off" option, and also enabled the "allow download over metered connections" option.

This basically has me stranded ...

Thanks in advance for any suggestions.

Hi all,

Ever since I updated to Windows 10, my laptop struggles to hold a strong connection (sometimes any connection at all) to my Virgin Media router. Even if I am sitting in the same room as my router, the connection is weak and often disconnects, with a connection holding for anywhere between a few minutes and a few seconds. It is not my internet connection as far as I am aware, as my partner and I have no issues connecting other devices such as phones and tablets to this connection.

Some info about the laptop;

HP Pavilion Notebook 15
Processor: Intel Core i3-4030U CPU @ 1.90GHz
RAM: 8GB
System type: 64-bit OS, x64-based processor

Some info about the router and connection:

SSID: virginmedia9926924
Protocol: 802.11n
Security type: WPA2-Personal
IPv4 address: 192.168.0.8
IPv4 DNS Servers: 194.168.4.100
194.168.8.100
Manufacturer: Broadcom
Description: Broadcom BCM43142 802.11 bgn Wi-Fi Adapter
Driver version: 6.223.215.14
Physical address: ‎14-2D-27-DD-B8-E3

Any help or suggestions would be greatly appreciated, thank you.

Answer:Laptop keeps losing WIFI connection

Hi,
Welcome to the forums, you could try switching your DNS to Open dns or google dns and see whether it improves, if it fails, download BCM43xxx drivers from station drivers and install, might help. You need to look for Driver version 7.12.39.18.
