what's a girl to do when her computer won't turn off, or turn on?

Question: what's a girl to do when her computer won't turn off, or turn on?

after serching all night to find out why his computer is in limbo, i leave my brother's house without finding needed help. his computer won't turn off...the fan, a couple little lights until he unplugs it from the wall. first, the computer did a restart all by itself, he said, then it would not turn on, except the fan and little lights inside that won't turn off. he took out the hard drive and it functions in his other computer...he puts the hard drive back into the new computer and it will not turn on or completely turn off that fan. he tried the "hold the on/off button for at least five seconds" step and nothing changes. he has had the computer for a year and a half, so he really wants to figure this out. how can he even get it to turn on so he could do a safe start up? so far we cannot find a way to troubleshoot. he have checked the cords, perhaps there was a freeze up that began this loop and that's why the fan stays on? please say this is something you have heard of and there may be a solution. the advice we have found usually goes back to buying a new computer. thanks in advance, tea

Preferred Solution: what's a girl to do when her computer won't turn off, or turn on?

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Welcome to TechSpot

I'd unplug all drives and add-on cards (such as soundcard if there is one), and try booting then.

So I decided to help out my GF's computer situation and completely backfired. She was able to view pages on IE6 but was a little slow, but not painstakingly. I install IE 7 with no problems and then decided to Install/run - Ad Ware 2007 and Spybot for the 1st time. I realized that she didn't have an up to date virus protection so I went out and installed Norton 2007 anti-virus.

After running all of those, I have encountered several problems.

The IE7 will go to a webpage and then within seconds say "the page is not valid" with a /// URL link.

Anways...here is the Latest Hijackthis Log.

I appreciate all the feed back.

(meanwhile, I am using my other computer at my home to access all research)

Thanks in Advance!

BTW...I tinkered with the Hijack this a couple of times right before I post this most recent log.

I have a bit of a strange issue with my computer. Forgive me if I'm a little too descriptive, but I'm not sure which details are relevant and which are not for such a problem. First, the specs:

Model: eMachines T2984
Operating System: Windows XP Service Pack 2
Processor: Intel Celeron D Processor 340, 2.93 GHZ, 256K L2 Cache, 533 MHZ FSB
Power Supply Unit: Bestec Model: ATX-250-12E REV: P7
Motherboard: I can't tell, but it appears to be an Intel motherboard by the number of Intel labels on it
RAM: 512 MB DDR SD originally, added 1 GB a couple of months ago
Let me know if you need anything else...

Yesterday, I got home from shopping around 1PM, and I tried to start the computer. I pushed the power button, and nothing happened. I checked all of the cords, and they were all plugged in. Not knowing what else to do, I opened up the case to see if there was something obviously wrong. The only thing that I noticed (other than a bunch of dust) was that the power supply unit was still hot. I shut the computer down about 5 hours earlier after about 20 minutes of use, so it seemed strange that the power supply was still hot. I unplugged the computer just in case there was some sort of fire hazard.

At this point, I called a friend who suggested that the problem might be with the motherboard or the power supply unit.

A few hours later, I plugged it back in to try to get it to work. As soon as I plugged it in, the entire unit suddenly started "running" by itsel... Read more

Answer:Computer Doesn't Turn on, Fans and Some Lights Turn on Automatically

I would suspect that the Power Supply Unit (PSU) is going south. If you have a spare one laying around, install it and see if the problem goes away.
You can buy a new, better PSU from Newegg for about $40.00. I have used a Thermaltake 430 watt in one of my machines for some time now and it works well.
You will have to check the size of your PSU to be sure a new one will fit into the eMachine.
Here's the page with that PSU on it. It's the last one on the list.

I just put together my first computer 6 months ago. It abruply shutdow in the middle of writing a paper for school. I couldn't turn it back on right away. after trying a few times, it turned on. All the fans are working even the fan on the power supply, the motherboards lights are on. My graphic card in on the motherboard. I think it might be my power supply because when I first put it together I didn't plug in the smaller power connection to the motherboard and the same thing is happening, black screen. It's like my computer isn't giving my monitor any feed. I will have more info when I get home. I can't get in to bios or safe mode.

I am using a client computer that is connected to a modem via a LAN cable which is in a neighboring house as far as about 50 meters. The host computer is there. The host computer is only using Internet Connection Sharing (without a router) to share its Internet connection with me. Within this network there are only two computers, the one I use (as client) in my house and the other one is the host computer as I mentioned earlier.

How do I know that the host computer is being turned on or off?

The purpose is to know so that I can use all the bandwidth from the modem when the host computer is not turn on. Because there are no restrictions on bandwidth from the host computer, and I just wanted to use all the available bandwidth only when the host computer is not turned on.

Both computers use Windows 7.

If you have got an XP install disc to do a recovery if it goes bad, i'd just hit the reset button, and boot into safemode straight away [press F8 as it is booting] then schedule a chkdsk and restart.

to schedule chkdsk...

Go to "my computer" and right click on the drive windows is on.

Select "properties" then go to the "tools" tab and click "check now" on the error checking section.

It will tell you that it cant perfrom it and ask you do you want to schedule it for next time...
click "yes" and reboot.Click to expand...

Hi everyone,

While turning on my computer the it turns on, fans are starting to move, but screen won't turn on, and the beep of the bios is not heard.

pressing the sleep/reset button next to the turn-on button computer goes off, pressing it again turns on the computer without any problem. (now I'm working with the same computer) i thought maybe it's the power supply that gives me problem but changed between computers, this still gives me trouble and other computer works good (besides its many problems ). any idea what to do?

Thanks in advance
Chaim.

BTW, while trying to write this thread I got all this terms that i didn't know how to call in English, like power supply - is that the box which connects to the power and to all the m-board and drives? is there an English computer terms dictionary?

Just got a new to me P3 computer up and running. Sometimes during star up it does not recognize the PS2 keyboard. Which makes it hard to go into my password protected User ID. When trying to shut down it will keep a few things running like some fans and the CD drive. But it does not sound like the Hard Drive is spinning.

If I use the XP to shutdown it goes into this limbo stage of neither off nor on, same goes for the power button on the front of the computer. It will either start up the computer or turn it to the limbo mode. Upon starting up, I can use the mouse to get it all the way into a non password protected XP users screen but can't do anything without the keyboard working. In the process of setting up I have had everything working earlier today but this keyboard and limbo status has been an intermitent problem. What should I try?
Thanks

Hello everyone,It seems that my XPS 9550 has a motherboard issue. I have got this laptop for several months before this problem happen. At first, the power button needs to pressed twice before the computer can turn on. Pressing it once will only cause the button to light up and fans to start spinning for only seconds. Then, after about a week, the problem got worse. I have to static discharge the BIOS and charge the computer for about 12 to 24 hours to get it working again. The light indicator did show that the CMOS battery is dead several times, and I had the CMOS battery replaced, but still no luck. I have run the diagnostics many times, but everything seems perfect. And I can get into the OS once the computer powers on.en.community.dell.com/.../This post points out a similar problem, but I think it has nothing to do with the battery or most of the motherboard components.Does anyone have encountered this before? Any advice will be appreciated.- Peter

So I had a problem with my T500's backlight initially and long story short, disassembling the computer has now caused the problem in the title. Whenever I plug in the battery/charger and push the power button, the fan will spin and the hdd will whirr a bit, but then after about 3 seconds, the fan will stop and the hdd will click off and cease whirring. The computer will no longer respond to the power button regardless of how many times nor how long the power button is held. I'm looking directly at the wires that carry power. Everything seems to be plugged in. I did the lenovo power trick (IE the 10 one second presses followed by the 30 second long press) and the computer does the 1-3-3-1 beep when I take out the RAM. The monitor is not plugged into it in any way, shape, or form. I do not know if this affects it. However, I have tried attaching the monitor and it still does this. Is there a piece that may have been knocked loose or something? I'm willing to try anything right now because at this point it's a literal brick now.

Answer:Lenovo Thinkpad T500 will turn on for roughly 3 seconds, then turn off and stay off.

Hi npesina, welcome to the forums,

there could be different reasons for the system behaving the way you describe, my suggestions;

remove all hard, SSD and optical drives to see if you experience the same,
remove all RAM, without replacing the drives, and test to see if you receive a system beep code,
remove all components which had previously been removed to test again.

The ultimate test would be to remove everything attached to the mainboard including the CMOS (BIOS) battery excluding the power socket, CPU and the fan. When you attach the power cable the system should come to life, the fan should run and beep codes sound. After that its really just a case of putting the system back together one component at a time testing inbetween each component replacement, leave the main battery and CMOS battery until last to save having to always connect / disconnect the keyboard in order to turn the system on.

If at any point you experience the same issue as now it may well be that the component you replaced at that point or it's attachment socket on the mainboard is the culprit.

Ad-Hoc requires that you restart the session each time.

Connectify pro has an auto start option that does this but it's a paid version, connectify lite is free but I'm not sure if has auto start.

I had it for nearly 2 years,Lenovo Y50-70 Touch -2 days ago while playing games on it, I smell a chemical smell coming from it so I immediately shut it down just in case. The next time I turn it on, it was fine the backlit keyboard glow red as usual but no display, and now it shut down after 4 seconds (with the fan running) whenever I turn it on except, sometimes It stay on (but still no display and no fan running).I got no experience into opening pc and such, I I tried opening it up and remove the dust that built us by quite a bit and tried to locate where the chemical smell was from, I though it was probably from the Fan or Coolers as it seems more strong there but not sure. After trying to turn the laptop on a few time the strong smell kind of dissipate a lot, and smell weaker.I been having a hard time trying to pinpoint just which part of the laptop is needed to replace. This is driving me crazy. My HP has Windows 7 and everytime it connects to the internet (wireless connection) Windows Live Messenger opens down in the left hand corner taskbar near the start menu. I close it, and fifteen minutes later it will open again.
I opened the options and unchecked the boxes pretaining to 'Run Windows Live Messenger when windows starts' but it still repeatedly opens. I use hotmail, but i really have no use for Messenger. The program is not listed under add/remove programs. Someone please help me turn this thing off.

Answer:Solved: Windows Live Messenger-TURN IT OFF TURN IT OFF!

It should be listed in Programs & Features under Windows Live Messenger or Windows Live Essentials. If you still can't find it listed then go to get.live.com and re-download the installer, reinstall it, then uninstall it.

Hey guys, little help here please.
Sometimes when I try to turn on IS it tries to turn On but everything greys out and nothing happens. Last time I tried it was about 4 hrs ago and since then its been hung up there. I can't open IS from settings now, Loading... shows up and it crashes after ~20sec. I can't turn off wifi because it becomes 'frozen' and when I press Back/Start button nothing happens but if I long press back button it show my active window is Start screen even though I am still in Wifi settings. After I release button wifi closes and end up in start screen.
I know if I soft reset everything comes back to normal. 99% I can even turn on IS. But why does this happen and how do you solve this problem (I know in the past some ppl used to have it)

Answer:Internet sharing doesn't turn on + cant turn off wifi

After a bit of searching this was the only answer I could find.
Remove/uninstall your nokia acount, install access point....you will get your internet sharing.
Not sure if that will help you or not but it's worth a shot.

Hello Folks,

I'm not sure if my issue is with hardware (possibly MB?) or graphics card, so please forgive me if I've posted in the wrong section. The first problem I was having was random blue screens of death that displayed graphic card driver issues. I was able to remedy that by updating my graphic drivers and have not had an issue since.

However, ever since then I have been running into another hardware or graphics-related issue that is random and completely stumping me. What is happening is, I will be on my computer, leave and turn my monitor off, and (randomly) when I come back to use my computer again, when I turn on the monitor there is no signal and a black screen (e.g. when I turn my monitor on my desktop will pop up and the light on my monitor will turn blue, when it doesn't turn on there will be a black screen and the light on the monitor stays yellow as if it is idle). I have tried swapping out the monitor to see if that was the issue and the same problem persists, so it does not appear to be my monitor or VGA cables.

The only way I can temporarily fix this issue is to reboot/restart my computer and viola! The monitor works again and I can see everything. This issue is very random. Sometimes I can go weeks without an incident, other times this is happening a couple times a week. I honestly don't know if it's my motherboard or video card or what. My PC isn't overheating, I'm not overclocking, and all of my drivers are updated.

I'm not sure what... Read more

Running Windows Vista Ultimate.

Display turns off after about fifteen minutes regardless of whether I am actively using the computer or not. The only way to turn the display back on is to close and then open the lid. This disconnets me from AOL, so I have to sign back on again, and if I was emailing, I might lose my current email.

Under Power Options, I have 'Turn off the display' set to Never for both On Battery and Plugged in. Under 'Put the computer to sleep' I have both On battery and Plugged in set to never. Nonetheless, the display still shuts off while I am working.

What do I need to do to prevent the display from turning off at odd intervals?

sounds like your display drivers are crashing.

Do not rely on windows update drivers - go to graphics chipset manufacturer website and get latest drivers

I've had this computer for 4+ months now, i built it myself. it recently started doing this but i'd just turn off the PSU (Power Supply Unit) and turn it back on and it woould fix it. now it doesnt fix it anymore. i've re-slotted the RAM (Random Access Memory) and pushed it in firmly, but that hasn't done anything. i've tried different power outlets and pushed everything into the MOBO (Motherboard), i havent messed around with CPU (Processor) because that's just a pain in the a**... i was wondering if there was anything else i could do before having to take it into a local repair shop, lol.

as for my computer specs

CPU (Processor): Fx-6300 AMD
GPU: R9-270x AMD
RAM (Random Access Memory): 8GB Ballistix sport
MOBO (Motherboard): ASRock 970 Extreme3 R2.0
PSU (Power Supply Unit): Corsair X500 w 80+
Case: Rosewill GALAXY

thanks

Answer:Fans turn on, lights blink and then turn off/on repeatedly.

First, I would unplug everything that isn't necessary. Everything external except for the keyboard and monitor. Internally, just leave the CPU, RAM and video card installed. See if it turns on. If not, you might try and test the power button. Disconnect the power button from the mobo. If the pin headers allow for it, use the reset button as the power button. If not, you can use a flat head screwdriver to power on the computer (cross the two pins for the power button with the blade of the screwdriver). If you do this, just be very careful. Touch only the power button pins and nothing else! You could easily damage components by touching the screwdriver to the wrong thing.

Some motherboards have a power button right on the board that you can press to power on the computer. I looked at a pic of your board and didn't notice one.

If that doesn't do it, plug the power button back in. You might try and play around with the RAM. I don't know if you have 2 or 4 sticks of RAM, but try and boot the computer with only one stick of RAM at a time. If there's a bad stick, you'll find it through this process of elimination.

If none of the above works, then it might be a bad PSU.

You can try a new RAM stick. What you describe can be: Anything overloads the PSU, or a failing PSU Bad memory in the low region. BIOS can't run without it. Bad CPU, or heat sink not in placeDisconnect the HDD and the DVD drive. (Power off, of course.)Power on. Does it show the BIOS?

Hi All,

I am using Windows 8.1 and had to refresh my computer as I was experiencing some problems. Everything seemed to be normal so I started slowly installing the programs I had before. Now a few days after, I find that my wireless device is Off and Flight Mode is On. I have been in settings but the relevant switches are disabled.
Can anybody tell me how to fix this please ? I really don't know how it happened. Can it be that my laptop is still infected ?

Thanks,
Robert

Answer:Turn Off Flight Mode & Turn On Wireless Devices

Is there a physical switch on your laptop for wireless? Often on the edges of your laptop... easy to miss.

Any recommendations? Here Drive+ had turn-by-turn GPS navigation for FREE. But it doesn't work on Windows 10 anymore. Are there any other free alternatives? Ones that don't use an internet connection, preferably.

When I turn the system off the backlight stays on and runs the battery down. It is not the keyboard backlight, it is the screen backlight. If I turn it off or put it to sleep the backlight stays on.
This did not happen prior to the upgrade to 10.

I want to discontinue use of McAfee (which came with the initial install) of my Windows 10 computer, and turn on Windows Defender. I don't know where to start.

Answer:turn off mcafee and turn on defender in windows 10

Open the start menu. Select "Control Panel". Select "Programs and Features". Find and select the McAfee program in the list then click "uninstall" at the top of the list. When it has finished uninstalling Windows Defender will activate itself.Go back to Control Panel again and select "Security and Maintenance" . In the security drop down list it should say Windows Defender is turned on.

I just picked up the HP Stream 8 at the MS Store this weekend during their VIP event (25$ off 75$ or more). I actually haven't opened it yet, because I'm still deciding if I should keep it.
One thing the HP Stream 8 seems to have is GPS. I say "seems" because no one at the MS store even knew that it had GPS--- I had to tell them about it and pull up the HP website to show them the specs.
I've loved having HERE Maps and HERE Drive on my Lumia 521 because of the downloadable offline maps. I try not to pay for data since I'm near wi-fi 95% of the time, so it is nice that the GPS works without requiring data.
Although there is a HERE Maps app for Windows 8.1, I haven't been able to find an app that is like HERE Drive, with turn-by-turn navigation.
Is anyone aware of such an app?
Thanks!

Answer:Any Windows 8.1 apps with turn-by-turn navigation?

I've used CoPilot Live for a few years and like it's turn by turn ability. I think there is a try version on the store.

Answer:x201 wireless always suddenly turn off and can not turn on again.

Yes, i have the same issue. Though it suffices if you deactivate and activate your WLAN adapter @ networkcenter, you don't need to reboot. This happened to me a couple of times as well.

I disabled Multi-Core in BIOS so i don't have regular lags.I always keep energy saving settings to "Maximum Performance" so i don't have regular contrast issues.I deinstalled ThinkAdvantage Access Connections so i don't have random WLAN Adapter "power offs".

I saw that there were others with this issue. I already tried things like resetting the ram, taking out my battery. Even with my laptop plugged in, not lights are showing up and the power button isnt starting anything. I tried to listen and hear if anything was happening, but no luck. I just to get help if there is anything I can do to trouble shoot or just figure out what the issue is so I can get it fixed . I was running Windows 10 on there.

Answer:Dell Inspiron 15R won't turn on ! No lights will turn on .

Hi PARTH511722,
What is the exact system model?
Are you using an original Dell OEM Adapter? When you plug in the adapter to the system, does the adapter stay firm or does it fall off easily? Is the adapter frayed? Is there any damage on the system? Could you test with another power adapter if possible? Could you try powering on with another battery?
Remove the memory and disconnect the HDD and try powering on the system with adapter only / battery only and check.
Does the adapter led stay on and stable or does it go off when connected to the system?
If the adapter led is stable when connected to the system and there are no signs of power, then the motherboard is suspected faulty.
Also, please click my DELL-username and write me a private conversation with the service tag and your Name for case records.
Let us know if you have any other queries.

Can you post your computer specs, along with your operating system, your external gpu name Is this an external gpu or an internal PCI-E video card?

Can you also post the wattage of your power supply.

At a guess I would say your power supply isn't powerful enough to run the card. "2 seconds off" Is this a new card and what was the reason for the change? On the black screen error this sounds like a basic driver error.

In either case remove 'external' video card from your computer, download the latest drivers for your os and internal video card from the manufacturers website go to; control panel, programs and delete ALL video card related drivers then run this program.

http://majorgeeks.com/Driver_Sweeper_d6171.html

Delete ALL drivers.

Turn on your onboard video card in bios

Now install the downloaded driver for your on board video card, does your onboard work now?
EDIT OOPS! Welcome to the forum!

Does anyone know if the new Maps app being built for the phone and PC features voice turn-by-turn navigation? I know the current Maps app does not. You need to use Here Drive or another third party app for voice navigation.

Answer:Will the new Maps app have voice turn-by-turn directions?

I forget where I read it earlier. I think it was either ArsTechnica, The Verge or WinBeta. Cortana is supposed to give turn by turn directions and can be asked to repeat them. The maps app is also supposed to be designed by Microsoft, but also uses HereDrive. The actual default camera app for all phones and probably pc's, laptops and tablets is actually Lumia Camera.

New W510. (4318 CTO, 16GB, WIndows 7) Used new 640GB drive to install Windows 7 Pro x64 from scratch. Installed lasted versions of drivers from Lenovo W510 support site. Almost everything works, except the WiMAX. WiMAX shows up and seems to be properly controlled in the preload. It does not show up in my rebuild, so the HW is there. Among other things, I installed Power Management Driver, Power Manager, HotKey Features and the Intel WiFi WiMAX 6250 v13.00.0000 (both WiFi and WiMAX parts) but just the WiFi part shows up in the OnScreen Display when using FnF5. The WiMAX does not. The drivers show up in the Control Panel programs list and there were no problems indicated during installation. Am I missing something or is there a trick to the installation order?

Answer:W510 WiMAX cannot turn on or turn off with FnF5

A bit more information: Under Network Connections the WiMAX adapter is listed as unplugged. Local Area Connection 2 Network cable unplugged Intel(r) Centrino(R) WiMAX 6250 Seems odd to me that it is not listed as a wireless device. Any suggestions on how get the WiMAX working?

If I unset "Allow the computer to turn off this device to save power" on the Power Management tab of my USB Root Hub properties, then when I attempt to restart my computer from the Start Menu, Windows shuts down but the computer itself keeps running,
i.e. the power light stays lit and the fan continues to run. In order to actually shutdown, I have to press the power button for a few seconds. Upon reboot, there is no indication of a failed shutdown from Windows. However, I am able to shutdown from the Start
Menu without problem.
Is this really the intent of not allowing the computer to turn off a device connected to a USB port, i.e. you can shutdown but you can't restart? Seems a bit arbitrary to me.

Good day!

My cousin asked me to troubleshoot the problem of his desktop. He was telling me that it is not turning on. I was caught by surprise when i turned on the PC when suddenly I heard some kind of explosion. It sounds like a blown capacitor or something to that effect. I immediately unplug the power cord from the wall outlet. I checked all the capacitors and looking for any damage and fortunately it's all ok. I smell the PSU to check if there's any short circuit occured and there was no foul odor or something. I removed the PSU from the casing for and opened it for inspection. I found out that the fuse exploded and broke into 2 pieces. I don't bother to repair it but instead I bought a new 700 watts PSU.

After replacing the PSU I turned on the PC but i found out that the CPU fan will spin for half a second and turn off. Led green light is on but no post or beep sound. I did some troubleshooting and these are as follows:

1. I removed the motherboard from the casing and put it on top of the table with cardboard underneath.
2. Clean the RAM stick and tried on other slot.
3. Clean CPU heatsink and fan since it was clogged by dirt and replace thermal paste.
4. Replaced the CMOS battery and move jumper pin 1-2 to 2-3 for about 2 minutes.
5. I turn on the PC without the video card, hardisk and keyboard.

SPECS:
Motherboard: asus h81m-c
CPU: Intel core I7
RAM: 8gb

Btw, prior to the above steps, right after replacing PSU I just clean the RAM and turn it on but ... Read more

nishant,

I just want to clarify your statement, did it come with Windows 10 installed out of box, or did you upgrade from Windows 8.1 to Windows 10? If it came preinstalled can you provide me the full model number?

If you upgraded, did the problem exist immediately after the upgrade and before any updates were performed?
If it came with Windows 10 preinstalled, try to perform a refresh.

Hello everyone, I have an HP Envy j100t which I purchased in 2014. ever since yesterday it's been starting but the screen remains pitch black, no display at all. It won't get to start up page, just remains a blank dark screen even though the power light is on and there's no battery issue because it was on charge all night and the AC adopter is still in. I keep on having to get to get to the BIOS recovery screen, letting that update, and then it proceeds to restart. However when it restarts, it never gets to start up and there is the same dark screen- no display. I have to always update BIOS, take out the battery and AC adapter, put them back in, and then it will start. Or sometimes even that whole process might not restart it. Please help!

Case: Powerspec Cooler master case
Processor: Intel i5 750(quad core)

Video: youtube.com/watch?v=UbuFZJQnlds

As you can see the PSU, CPU, and Case fans are turning on and the Motherboard LED lights are blinking and then they quickly turn off. I dont think its a problem with the Power Supply because I have already returned one with the same issue thinking it was defective.

My daughter's computer (which I work on) won't turn on at all.
the computer is 2.0 gig processor, 128 meg ram, Radon 9000 video card, on board sound. Creative labs modem, windows 98.
For about a week or two, every time she turned it on, the computer would go into safe mode. she would have to reboot about two to three times before it would go into normal mode.
she checked the device manager and no conflicts.
Someone said it could be the CMOS battery needs replacing and someone else said maybe the power supply. The power supply is only about 3 months old.
Can the CMOS battery being dead cause the computer not to turn on at all. I have never encountered a dead CMOS battery before, so not sure what the computer will do if it goes dead.
Also, Can a virus keep the computer from coming on at all.
(when she pushes the button to turn it on, nothing happens at all...dead)

what do I look for?
thanks

Answer:when i turn my computer on

Pull the RAM sticks out and then power on.If you get beeps, that's good. That means your motherboard/bios is working and has detected the missing RAM.If you plug in the RAM and do not get a display, and do not get any beeps, the motherboard/bios is not working. One of the RAM sticks is bad, or you are not inserting them correctly and it's stopping the motherboard from operating..The three most important things in computing:1. Backups, 2. Backups and 3. Backups.

Does anyone have any ideas what to do? Everything else plugged in is on but the computer itself won't turn on.

Answer:computer won't turn on

What brand or model of computer, and how old is it? Give us the information off the label on the back. Desktop or laptop?
Are you good with a screwdriver?
Do you live in a big city, or a small town, because we need to help you find parts or a tech help.

Did you do something different? Like add a new video card, or memory, or other component?
Do any lights come on anywhere? Red, orange, blue. Is the screen totally dark at all times.
Can you get it into a position where you can see the back of the computer?

Usually, the problem is one of these:
Failed or dirty power supply.
Failed or dirty power switch
Failed memory module
Failed video graphics port, if PCI
Failed hard drive, though most will give you something on the screen
Failed or dirty CPU fan.
In some cases, a failed audio card or modem, or usb card in a pci slot, if it fails electrically, will cause everything to stop.
There can be other problems such as a bad CPU or bad motherboard, but they are exceedingly rare.

To begin checking it, it is helpful to look at the back of the machine. At the top of the back is a power supply with a fan. Get somebody to attempt to turn on the power while you watch with a bright light.
If you see the fan blades turn 1/8 turn or up to 3 turns, then stop, that usually means your power supply is bad.
Next, are you sure that wall socket is good? Strange things happen. Plug something else in there to be sure it is working.
You can buy and replace the power supply for $30 to $50. But if... Read more

Thanks in advance for looking!I just bought a Gateway GM5478 Computer this past June. These are the computer specs:Intel? Core? 2 Quad Q6600 Quad Core Processor with VT Intel G332048 MB DDR2, 667 MHz, (PC2-5300) dual channel memory (two 1024 MB DIMMs) 500 GB, 7200 RPM, SATA II hard drive (Seagate Barracuda)NVIDIA? GeForce? 8500GT 256 MB video card Power Supply: Delta Electronics, Inc., Model: DPS-400RB A (400W max)The problem is that my computer won't turn on anymore. The power light will light up, but nothing else happens. The fan doesn't turn on, the hard drive doesn't make a sound, etc. It was working fine previously. I went to work with it running a virus scan (using AVG), and when I came home the screen was black. I hit a few keys, clicked the mouse, but nothing happened. The only way I would eventually get it to shut off (so I could reboot), was to hold the power button down long enough for it to power down. when I went to turn it back on, nothing happened. Like I said, the power light turns on, but nothing else. I do, however, hear a faint sound when I do hit the power button to try and turn it on. It sounds like it's coming from the power supply, but I can't be sure. It only lasts, literally, for a fraction of a second. I'm not sure if it's the power reaching the power supply, or what it could be. It was plugged into a surge protector to begin with, and I've tried other outlets but I still get the same result. I contacted Gatewa... Read more

Hi I was hoping if anyone can give me an answer to a problem I've been having. I bought the Lenova Ideapad S10 from Hong Kong about a month ago, and it's been working great, until last night! I fell asleep with it on for a few hours, and when I woke up, the thing was powered down and would not turn on! When I press power, the led light the right turns on, but it's not blue (more like a purple color) When it is plugged in, and when I press power, the two led lights to the right turn blue, but the thing does not turn on! The notebook is relatively new, and the battery is new so Im not sure why it's acting up this way. I've tried the method of pressing the power button 15 times and holding onto the power button, but when I plug it in after it still doesn't turn on. If anyone can give me any input it'd be great. Thanks!

Take out the battery and AC charger, and press the power button for 10 seconds 3 times, then 30 seconds a 4th time. Put everything back in, and see if it works. If not, i regret to say that you may be facing a shorted motherboard.

First hello everyone. My problem is this. Just a few days ago I tried to turn on my computer and it seems like it tried to start up but went dead on me. I have taken the side panel off to get a better look at what was going on and here is what I notice. When plug in, there is a power light on the motherboard that is light up. When I press the on button, for a few seconds, the cpu fan, psu fan and case fan come on and then shuts down. Pressing the on button again will do nothing unless I shut the PSU off and turn it back on, press the on button once again and the fans come on for a short second. Nothing else happens, the hdd will not spool up.I have metered the power supply and there is 115 v going to it. Could anyone help me in trouble shooting this problem, thanks.Specs,The computer is about 6-7 yrs old.Intel 3.0ghz450 w power supplyWindows XP80 Gb hard drive1 Gb DDR2 ram

Answer:Computer won't turn on!

I am thinking age here - and possible failure of one or more PSU rails.I would wish to remove plugs on supply rails from their respective devices and see if all give feeds - looking for 3.3v, 5v, and 12v. The mobo LED suggests I think 5v present but if something else is missing you possibly won't go beyond fans.Check this out first - seems you know how to use a meter, which helps. If PSU is OK then maybe BIOS - wonder if BIOS battery has expired.

(when she pushes the button to turn it on, nothing happens at all...dead)

what do I look for?
thanks

A couple days ago. My computer froze while windows was loading start up programs. When it froze, I did a manual shutdown (holding the power button until it shut off.) I went to turn it back on and nothing happened. I get nothing but a flashing orange light on the power button.

It's a Dell Dimension DM051 with a second hard drive and 4GB of ram instead of 2.

I tried putting in a new 500w power supply, but the problem remains unchanged.

So really my question is... Is it dead? Or is it a simple fix?

Answer:Computer will not turn on.

assuming that the power supply is properly installed, remove all RAM cards, power it on and see if the motherboard will still beep. If there's no beep then your motherboard has gone bad.

The computer is a Compaq Presario 5000. It has a Pentium 4 and windows XP installed on it. Im not any sort of computer-wiz but i do know a little about electronics. A couple months ago, my friend tried to install a wireless card into the tower. after that, she said the monitor wouldnt turn on. so i put off working on the computer for a while because i thought it was just a problem with the video card. well turns out there is more to this problem than i thought. for some reason, dont ask me why, she told me she had to take out the power supply. she dropped a screw in it. ohh man. and now, as soon as i plug the power supply into the wall, the computer tries to boot without me even pressing the on button. the hard drive lights blink as well as the power light on the front and also the cd drive blinks forever. the processor fan turns on as well as the power supply fan. the problem is, it doesnt sound like the hard drive is spinning at all and it sounds like the power is pulsing a bit.

sorry, i tried to describe the problem to the best of my knowledge so if you have any other questions just let me know. please help!

Answer:Computer Will Not Turn On! HELP!

a BIOS setting decides whether or not to automatically turn the system on when AC power is applied (it's a post-power failure setting).

I don't know how you drop a screw into a PSU... lol but you need to get it out so it doesn't cause a short circuit.

but anywho.. he's what you should do. You don't have to remove the mobo from the case (although that is the best way)...

1. unplug all power and data cables from the mobo and all other components
2. remove the CMOS battery and if equipped with one, set the CMOS jumper to clear
3. remove all RAM and PCI/video cards
---at this point there should be nothing but the CPU and HSF attached to the mobo---
4. blow out any dust from the RAM, PCI, and video card slots
5. re-install only 1 stick of RAM
6. re-install the video card (unless it's on-board video) and connect to monitor
7. hook up the boot hard drive (no other hard drives, floppy drives, or optical drives)
8. put the CMOS jumper back into it's normal position and re-install CMOS battery
9. plug the ATX power cable into the mobo (and the 4 pin CPU connector)
---at this point everything else should be un-installed or disconnected---
10. plug AC power cord in and attempt to boot up

...let us know what happens

I have seen several computer utilities that will automatically turn a computer off. Is there a utility that will automatically turn it on? I want my computer to turn on at 4 in the morning while I am still in dreamland, download my antivirus updates, do a complete scan and then download emails, etc.....would be nice if it could make my coffee too, so that when I get up at 6 a.m. everything is all good to go.

Is there such a program?

Answer:Help me turn my computer on

Not to my knowledge, why not just leave it on with the monitor switched off. I do that 90% off the time with no ill effects on my hardware.

I have an older computer that will not turn on. It tries too. I can flip the switch in the back and push the button on the front and sometimes the light will come on and the fan will turn but then it stops. I have checked all the cables, power supply cable, I even opened the power case and checked to make sure nothing was loose. I don't know why it will try to come on but will not. Any suggestions? Thanks.

Hello and welcome to Techspot.

Amongst other things it could be a faulty psu.

Try a different psu. See if that helps. If it doesn`t post back, and we`ll see what else we can come up with.

Ok, here's the deal:

I had to update my motherboard back in May, along with my video card and chasis. Everything was well and good until one day in July, my roommate was playing LotR: BfME and all of the sudden it just froze. Nothing happened whatsoever, I tried everything. So, I resorted to a hard reboot. Next thing I know it won't boot up. Nothing happens on the screen.

So, I took the compy back to the shop that I had worked with before to get the new mobo and such, and after some testing they claimed that my mobo (socket 478) went bad, so they got a new one under warrenty. Next thing I know I get a call from them claiming that it was not the mobo, it was my processor. Evidently a bad chip, though I have been using it for the past three years (P4 3.0ghz, 800fsb, HT).

So, because I really had a hard time finding an affordable chip for the 478 socket, I found a deal on newegg that gave me an AMD mobo and chip combo. So, I just got it and replaced it tonight. I hooked everything up correctly, and hooked the external parts up. Nothing on the screen happens, though all the lights and fans work fine.

I tested my monitor by hooking it into an old laptop, works perfectly.

I do not get a POST beep until I just have CPU, RAM, and IDE1 (CD / DVD drives) hooked in, yet still nothing on the screen when I turn it on (the new mobo has onboard video, I have tested with both my video card and this). The beep is just a regular one beep.

Any ideas?

Thanks in... Read more

First thing, clear cmos, either by jumpers if you know which ones or by simply pulling plug on power supply and removing m-b- battery for a few minutes, i guess your ram may not be compatable with your new board, and possibly your power supply. ide 1 or primary is for your hard drive, secondary is for dvd-cd rom. ed

Hello,
When I press the power button, nothing happens. No fans, no lights. The PC is custom built.

This usually only happens if turn off the computer and leave it for a night. If I were to on and off the computer immediately, it works fine.

I've noticed that there is a green light coming from my graphics card.

A simply remedy to this problem would be to turn off the power and leave it for 1-2 hours. Then, the computer works fine again until the next time I go to work/sleep.

Lastly, this happens randomly, sometimes it works even if I leave it overnight.

Here are the specs:

OS Version: Microsoft Windows 7 Home Premium, Service Pack 1, 64 bit
Processor: Intel(R) Core(TM) i5-2500K CPU @ 3.30GHz, Intel64 Family 6 Model 42 Stepping 7
Processor Count: 4
RAM: 8175 Mb
Graphics Card: NVIDIA GeForce GTX 580, 1535 Mb

Hello. I'm having a very weird issue with my laptop. I put my laptop into standby when I was using it earlier because I was moving it from one location to another and I was going to be using it in the other location. When I tried to power on my laptop, it wouldn't power on! Nothing was wrong with the laptop when I had used it earlier; I was on the internet with it and I even used it during one of my classes at college. I tried holding down the power button for a minute without the battery or power cord in, but nothing! Is there anything I can do?

After I logged in any one account, I wanted to turn off the computer. How do I do that?.....How do I enable the setting so that upon log in, I can just click Start>Shutdown and the computer would turn off immediately (without having to go through a second welcome screen).

I don't really know what the source of the problem might be -- are you using "Fast User Switching"? I would try either enabling or disabling that and testing:

http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/using/accessibility/fastuserswitching.mspx

If a resolution is not found there, then I would probably try doing some "clean boot" troubleshooting:

I fear that I've done something extremely stupid to the CPU. The CPU cooling fan has been extremely noisy, so I was wanting to change it. I'm living in Kenya and finding a fan to replace it was not as easy as in the USA.

Someone suggested using WD40 on the fan. So I removed the fan (No I didn't spray WD40 inside the computer!). Wiped the fan dry and allowed it to sit for a few hours. Then I connected the fan to the MB (only the electric connection, I didn't put the heat sink or fan on the CPU) and covered the fan in a paper towel to catch any WD40 that might spray out. I turned the computer on for maybe 30-60 seconds maximum to allow the fan to spin. The computer shut itself down. It never did begin to boot. It gave me an odd one line message that I can't remember. It seemed to mention something about pooling.

Now it won't restart at all. Sometimes when I push the on switch, it lights up briefly and the internal fans begin to spin, but for 1-2 seconds is all. Then nothing as if there is no current. I've checked all the electrical connections, the UPS, etc.

Could I have ruined the CPU? Any other possible sources of this problem?

Answer:Computer won't turn on - CPU?

Um, well i can say unless you ran it for hours you shouldnt have damaged the cpu. I acidentally ran a P4 for 1 1/2 hrs with the fan off because of a bad fan port on the mobo didnt hurt it just really bad performance. Try clearing the CMOS by pulling the battery or moving the jumper that is around the battery over and back.

and wd40 attracts dust its like a film of dust grabbiness, i put it on my ceiling fan to see if it worked and it attracts dust...

I reset the computer, and it worked fine for like two minutes and then it went black again. Now it won't even turn on. The light on the computer turns on, and usually it lets out two beeps, and now it just stays silent. I haven't changed anything, what could be wrong?

Hi
Have you unplugged the system from wall power and let it set overnight?
Is there any way to test the psu and other parts in another system? If the cpu is dead that will keep one from booting or hearing any beeps. As well you might look into resetting your bios. Do you have a manual for your system?
Just throwing some thoughts your way.

Hi,

I have recently installed a new DVD-RW drive in my pc, which went well, until i tried to use the drive to run the software disc.
The drive had played a dvd ok, while i was testing if it worked, and initially the software disc worked also, i left the room, and when i returned 2 minutes later, the computer was off and won't turn back on.

Note- the inside of the pc has lights on, from the tv card, which makes me think that its not the power supply, however nothing else turns on.

I would appreitiate any help on the matter,

ps. i am in the process of buying a new psu to try and see whether that will fixd it, is there any reason i shouldn't use it, like will it blow that one as well???

Thanks for your help, Jwils

Answer:Computer won't turn on

it sounds like the power supply,if it goes fans ect. can still operate as they do not pull much power
before you buy check your requirements here
http://www.jscustompcs.com/power_supply/
based on a quality supply and add 30% to the result
and then get as large a supply you can afford above what is required to allow for future upgrades
you get what you pay for, generic supplies are cheap and nasty always go for quality

Alright, so I'm new to this forum, so please excuse if I'm doing something wrong. But a few months ago I purchased a custom-built desktop from someone. My intent was to use it for minor-gaming, and so I did. It worked for a month or maybe a little more than a month and all of a sudden one day I got home from school and I tried to start it up, and it didn't turn on. It was working fine the night before, and the next day, nothing. I don't know what could have happen, but my father unplugs things every morning before going to work, maybe that could have done something. I opened it up to look around. One thing was unplugged, that was the power LED, the other thing is the ATX SW however, that was plugged in. I messed around with it for awhile and nothing seemed to work. I then shifted the wires a bit, and what I got from it was a blue LED light on the power button when the system is powered on. That didn't happen before from what I recall. I also took out the PSU and tested it using the paper clip method, and the method worked, the PSU fan was spinning, but when I plug it back into the MOBO, it doesn't work, nothing turns on but that blue LED light on the power button in the front. No sign of power, no fan, or anything. I also tried to remove my 4gb of ram memory, that did nothing. I don't know what else can be done, help please? I spent a decent dollar on it..
I don't remember specifics on specs, all I remember is that my MOBO is a BIOSTAR ... Read more

Answer:Computer won't turn on!

Not sure what the paper clip method is, but it sounds like the PSU is bad. It puts out a number of different voltages so testing one part may not work. Do you have another one to try in its place?

I have had my IBM Aptiva since 2000 with Win98SE. Never ever let me down, although the OS has, more often than not. I never used the hybernation feature until recently. It didn't work that well, but still I used it for half a dozen times. Everytime It came out of hybernation it would power-up with the hybernation window on the desktop and then go back into hybernation. On second power-up it stayed up and worked as usual. BUT, two mornings ago it failed to turn-on. The two LEDs just flicker.

No HDD noise, no CPU fan, no PSU fan; nothing but the short flicker.

I diassembled the PSU, cleaned it and looked for fried items or burnt smell; nothing. Was unable to test voltages as I do not have dummy load. Internal fuse had integrity and managed to read +5V on two internal leads. As all failed, I reassembled the unit and had another go. The PSU fan worked and thinking all is well, reintalled it. BUT, same problem again. Computer won't turn-on.

Any help is very much appreciated. Thanks!

Answer:Computer won't turn-on

I'm not familiar with the IBM Aptiva, is it an atx psu?
If so, short the green wire to any black, that should power it up.

Hope that helps, Rik.
