Staging offsite new Windows Server R2 Essentials

Question: Staging offsite new Windows Server R2 Essentials

I have a new client with one server running Windows SBS 2011and 5 computers
that log into it. The server is in a very unstable state throwing tons of errors at every angle, so the office has chosen to buy a new server running Windows Server 2012 R2 Essentials.

My question is ? can I
setup the new server offsite and domain then when I get to the office completely
back up the old server, create new local accounts on the client computers and copy the data (My Documents, Favorites, Desktop Files and etc.) over to the new local account,
shutdown the old server, bring up and copy all the data to the new server, and then have the new client local accounts join the new domain? Since this is such a small new domain,
does Windows Server 2012 R2 Essential require a DHCP and DNS server or can the SonicWall handle that?

Preferred Solution: Staging offsite new Windows Server R2 Essentials

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Hey Guys, Never thought I've had to see the day, but our print server is acting up, running out of disk space (the previous guy made a raid 1 and then let 2003 split it in to 2 small drives) and just over all a pain in my hind. We are going to wipe it clean and do a fresh install of server 2003 std sp2. This server is currently our print server. If I backup all of the printers with print mig, redo the machine and then restore all of the printers I should be fine correct? Will it restore all of the shares again for me as well? Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks

Answer:Re-Staging current print server

Last time I used it I believe there is an option to back up the shares as well. Just remember to name your server the same and IP the same lol.

You may also need to enable kernel mode driver installs.

I have an offsite server hosted in a data centre, it is my mail/web server and used for anything that needs to be public facing. I will be getting a fibre connection soon, so it seems to me it would be very feasible for me to treat this server as "part of the network", via an always on VPN. Is this something that can be done? Basically the server would have a local IP that is routable throughout my network, in addition to it's external IP. I would have NFS shares and other stuff that is accessible only within this tunnel.

Idealy I'd also want this solution to support having multiple servers in case I add more in the future.

Also if this server was to be compromised would there be a risk of having bad traffic spill onto my internal network?

Answer:always on VPN for offsite server

What OS is the offsite server running and is it behind and routers or does it have a public ip?

so i run a very small business with a file server running Windows Home Server for Quickbooks. I would like to access this server remotely. what would be the best way to do this?

Answer:accessing offsite server? vpn?

Remote Desktop, just port forward from your router to the server... done.

Side Note: make sure you have a semi-decent password and not something like "pass"

I am setting up an offsite storage server for work at my home which will sync a few times a day to grab data and i wanted to ask about options for encryption or if i should worry about it

i am going to be initially dumping about 1-1.5T worth of data, with then maybe a couple of gigs a day added of new stuff.

i am going to use server 2008 r2 as i am also doing a read only DC/AD for this system to give me and offsite controller just incase also.

I was thinking encryption for one more level of safety just incase something happened to the server, like theft or something but not sure what could reliably handle that much data ? System is only a dual core e7500 with 8G of ram, i have 2x500G SATA in raid 1 for the OS and 4 x 1T drives in raid 6 with 2 more coming.

Answer:Offsite storage server - encrypt the data?

Use bitlocker, built into server 2008

This is a theoretical question...

We're a personal / small office / service / one stop shop company, servicing about 400 or so businesses ranging from 2 to 50 computers... most of our offices are running a server of some sort. For the past year or so we've been reselling Mozy online backup service subscriptions... we are backing up about 3/4 of a terabyte of data between 80 or so of our clients who we've approached about it. EMC recently bought out Mozy and we received a call today saying that EMC may be raising our reselling backup rates by oh... about 500% over what we were being charged by Mozy. We may be grandfathered in but we have no idea at this point what's going to happen.

LogMeIn has a "Backup" service which encrypts and backs up data to a given location. Would I be completely out of my mind to take on a task like offering backup space to clients who'd want keep their rates low? We're behind a decently fast business grade cable line (30000 down 5000 up) with 5 static IPs... I'd probably get a 2nd subscription run in for this exclusivly. We have a few NAS servers in a rack with about 2tb of data space on Raid5.

I'm on the fence right now...

Answer:Running a small offsite data backup server...

Seems like you have a good server room, good equipment, and a nice internet line, so it could be a good idea.

Remember if you are hosting, mostly your download will make the difference. So since you have a ton of download bandwidth it should not be an issue

hey all,

i have a bit of a pickle, im still in the process of doing extensive research, but any tips would be greatly apreciated.

I have a building on the other side of town that is connected via vpn tunnel to my main building. today i installed a dell pe 2850 with server 2003 r2 to be a secondary domain controller and wsus server for that building.

what i did for my main building is use the default domain policy to specify the wsus server for all the machines on the domain.

In the new building, i guess i thought i could just create a OU for the new building and put all computers in that group, create a specific group policy with location specific details.

however none of the machines have shown up in WSUS and all seem to be sticking to the default domain policy, despite me checking the box for "no override"

is my default policy a bad idea? should i create OUs for computers in my main building as well?

thanks

Answer:2003 r2 offsite secondary domain controller and 2nd WSUS server

where do you have the 2 WSUS policies set?
One at the domain level, and an additional one at the OU level for the secondary building?

Best practice would be to have different OUs for different sites that need different GPO's applied.
Domain level OUs should only be ones that will be the same across the board, regardless of location/OU.

Although there is no reason it should not be working, as a GPO on an OU takes precedence at a GPO set at the domain level.
http://www.petri.co.il/working_with_group_policy.htm

have all the machines have their group policies refreshed?

So I need to migrate my old windows home server to an OS that can use advanced format hard drives.

I installed WSE just now and was looking for some information on how to configure it.

I I though there was supposed to be a way to connect to the server without joining a domain though?

I notice the server does not how up on the network from my windows 7 PC How do I get to the connector software? Do I have to join the Domain?

Answer:Windows Server Essentials Domain

Define "connect" to it.

I've just purchased a new Dell server with Server2012 Essentials for a work project, and while it is configured for a domain I can US RDP and shared folders from computers that are not attached to the domain. Granted because it's all in development at the moment I am using a admin account on the server for access rights.

I keep getting a 153 error on disk 3. How do I determine which disk is 3? I have 3 new 4TB drives, does this mean one of them is bad? I have like 70,000 of these errors now and smart tools etc all say all of my disks are healthy. I'm non longer able to stream most stuff from the server, and writing to this disk seems to be causing this error.

All I could find is this when searching for the error (Same error I am getting only I have it like 70k times over a few days).

Looks like it's time to replace the drive. As for which one it is; this is why when I build a server I label the drives prior to putting it into production ( by the low-tech method of booting up without a drive plugged in, determine which one it is, rinse/repeat for all drives in system ).

I'm trying to help a friend to get their Windows Server 2012 Essentials setup up in their small business.

Server is operational, but I'm having issues connecting PCs to it...

I'm able to get to the server page by going to http://(servername)\connect
I can download the connector software, when I run it it finds the server it ask for user name and password.

After entering info it tries to connect for 20-60 seconds and fails with:

Cannot coonect this computer to the network
The Server is not available. Try connecting this computer again, or for more information, see troubleshooting connecting computers to the server.

any idea what could be causing?

could this be caused by network issues? They are using ATT DSL for internet access, with a ATT model, that is referred to as "gateway.pace.com"

They also have a zyxel smart switch, it seems that both ATT DSL and Zyxel switch are acting as DHCP, and both might be issuing IP addresses.

Another thing I noticed that they are using IP phones for all office phones.
All PCs are connected to the network with an IP phone as a device in the middle, that seems be slowing down the phones from normal gigabit to 10/100 only.

Any help would be grateful.

I'm running Windows Server 2012R2 Essentials and I started the http://server/connect on a Windows 7 Pro SP1 machine. The problem is that the connection process stopped...
If I manually start "C:\Windows\system32\Essentials\ClientDeploy.exe" -LaunchedFrom:resume -Server:192.168.178.10 the systems says "Your account is not a member of Administrators". The account I'm logged on with is __clientsetup__$.
Below is the log file, in the end it says "Add user to local admin group.". That clearly didn't happen (I checked).
Any suggestions?

I have a WSE I use for backing up and stoaring data. I have like 10 hard drives connected to it 8 of which are running drive pool.

The Motherboard is toast, and well although it wasn't having any issues keeping up with some cameras and file storage and backups, I guess it might be time to replace it with my 4770k office PC (ex gaming rig) and upgrade that machine.

If I simply swap out the MB's are boot off the Hard drive with WSE be able to adapt to the new hardware? Can I at least recover the CD Key because I can't seem to find it anywhere.

Answer:Registry Problem in Windows Server 2012 essentials

what do you mean by "added my computer into the server" as it's not clear what you did.
and clarify "there is no user found on the permission for drop box"
it should list local accounts and possibly the SID of a deleted domain user (if you mean you added your computer to the domain that Server 2012 Essentials creates)

Also, I earlier posted a link to a reported work-around for the connector software forcing workstations on the Domain.

Download Windows 10 Client Connector Update for Windows Server Essentials 2012 R2 as it now available at Microsoft.

Windows Server Essentials Connector is software that helps you connect your PC or Mac client to Windows Server 2012 R2 with the Windows Server Essentials Experience server role enabled. It also enables and manages key client-side functionality of Windows Server Essentials Experience. On a PC, it provides client backup, a tray icon and the Launchpad, the Dashboard for management of remote servers, and a VPN profile with the capability of auto-dialing and monitoring client health from the server side. On a Mac, it provides health monitoring and the Launchpad.

I am trying to add Windows 10 clients to Windows Server essentials 2016. It seem that in order for the server to see the clients I must the clients join the server server Domain. (Currently they are in a workgroup).

It looks like one has to change the Windows10 clients to access the WSE-2016 DNS. So in windows 10 I go to networks, bring up the adaptor setting. Bring up "Internet Protocol Version 4 (TCP/IvP4) and instead of "Obtain the DNS address automatically" change it to always get the DNS address on the WSE-2016 (found with ipconfig).
Then within Windows I use ?System?, ?about?, and Join the server DOMAIN. It now works. The client can now see the Server domain.
I can then see the Server files and the server can see the Windows 10 shared files.
There are still problems however.
When I reboot the Windows 10 client. I have a brand new user screen with only some of my original desktop icons showing. Do I have to essentially rebuild up everything on my desktop again!
Question: Is there not a way to have my original desktop appear when I am joined to the Domain.
Second, since there will be times when the server is off I used the router static DNS IP address as the alternative address in the above dialog box of the Windows10 clients. Seems to work since the client can access the internet even with the WSE 2016 off.
Here is my second question. I have a few home laptops as well. If I force the DNS to the server what happens when I travel. ... Read more

Answer:Adding Windows 10 Clients to Windows Server Essentials 2016

When Windows client computers are not joined to a domain they use the local SAM database to authenticate to the client computer. When the computer is domain joined you are using an AD user account to log into the computer. These accounts are going to have different SIDs as well as local profiles on the system. If you log into the computer with an account that has local admin access, you can simply move or copy the data from the local user account folder into the domain account user folder. The user folders inherit permissions from the root C:\Users\<username> so they should automatically gain access to the newly copied data.

I have just succeeded in hooking my Windows 10 client to Windows Server Essentials 2016. To do this I had to switch the W10 from a Workgroup to Domain setup.
All works fine except most of the desktop items originally on the client icons disappeared. Worse when I launce things like Outlook, Word etc. I have to initialize it from scratch.
How does one get all the settings, desktop icons etc. to re-appear on this new account that is now chanced from a Workgroup to a Domain setting.
I am an administrator (and only user) on both the W10 and WSE-2016. I see under users my original name on the W10/Workgroup and a new name. The new name does not have many files in it. I assume that?s the problem. But when I copy stuff from the old name folder across the programs are still not initialized correctly.

Hi,

According the issue, I suspect that your machine created a new user profile in this case. The user profile path is stored in registry, here
is the path: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\ProfileList(check the picture).  Please check the value of ProfileImagePath.

We have an important LOB application (QuickBooks 2018) that requires that requires Internet Explorer 11 for QB to operate correctly.  Unfortunately our server runs Windows Server 2012 Essentials as an operating system (not R2).  From reviewing
various Microsoft documents, I realize that IE 11 is not supported on Server 2012.  However, we need to be able to run QuickBooks, which requires that version of IE.  Upgrading the server OS to 2012 R2 would take hours, because there is no in-place
upgrade option.  We would have to reinstall and configure the OS again from scratch.
Is there anything we can do to resolve this problem?
Thanks for any assistance you can offer.

Alrighty... this is the best place i think I could put this question.

I have this client (PR Firm) that is slowly backing out of their office space (they have multiple rooms in an executive suite type office location).

Total of 4-5 employees in the office.
1 employee is moving to San Fran and is a PC user
2 employees are staying at the Austin Office location 1 PC and 1 Mac
1 employee is now working from home in Austin and is a Mac user

stray employee (accountant I beleive) needs access to Fileserver once or twice a month.

They have asked me to help them figure out an offsite fileserver solution for them all to communicate and work from. I was maybe thinking of a sharepoint option but not sure if Mac will work well with this.

Price is asked to stay reasonabley low as they do not store a lot other than Press Releases and marketing files and strategies. I'm not seeing a huge amount of bandwidth or storage really needed at all.

Any ideas? I'm looking around the net but nothing has struck me as a great option just yet...

Thanks in advance!

I'm looking at a good software firewall, a good anti-virus program, but I'm curious on what else one should be looking for. I'm very new to this, and I'm learning a lot each and every day, but I hope that I can get a little guidance on this from fellow forumers, thanks

I'm looking for a solution for a small business here in town, they are getting to the point where they need to have a small server to centrally locate files, printers, and so on. There are only 3 computers in the office so I'm thinking about going with either Server 2012 Foundation or Essentials.

However they need to be able to use the Remote Desktop client on their Windows 7 workstations to connect to the server from time to time. Does either of these versions of Server allow remote desktop connections and if so how many at one time?

Thanks!

Answer:RDP connections for Server Foundation or Essentials?

I believe Foundation is pretty much like 2008R2 and allows 1 RDP connection for admin purposes
Essentials is more like SBS and allows 1 admin RDP connection as well.
Essentials is limited in certain functions and hardware

Clients should be getting the DNS from the server, especially if you want clients to connect/use the server, especially for logons, policies, etc.
Im guessing the .254.254 is a uverse/att device?
Turn off the DHCP on the .254 device *or* add your current router into the DMZ type zone
Server should be sending out DHCP info
192.168.1.4 as DNS
192.168.254.254 as gateway (or is you can do the DMZ mode use 192.168.1.1)
255.255.255.0 as subnet

Has anyone else gotten this combo to work?

Whenever I try to install WSE2012 through UEFI/BIOS it fails. The computer reboots before I even get into the setup GUI. So far, I have only been able to boot into DOS.

I've removed all PCIE cards, unplugged hard drives, and updated the BIOS to the latest version.

I verified the chksum of the WSE2012 against Technet so i know my download is good.

I burned the ISO to DVD & Flash drive.

Any ideas?

It sounds like it would be well-suited to a home file server/backup, as it does full backup of client systems. It sounds like it does some of what WHS does, but is meant for a business market.

I think at one time SBS was able to do WHS-like drive pooling. I haven't seen any info, but can SBS 2011 do that?

I am just curious how well it works. Right now I have Server 2008 running with a virtual WHS for backups, but it's not really optimal as backups aren't really backed up. I have the clients doing a SyncToy backup, but it's not as reliable as I would like. I thought SBS could replace the pair working together, and would remove some complications and maybe be a little more dependable.

Answer:Has anyone used Small Business Server 2011 Essentials?

I've reached the end of my limited networking knowledge. Here's the deal:

- I have my home server running Windows Server Essentials 2012. Its primary function is backups of my various computers.
- My ISP is ATT Uverse, which provides a modem/router/gateway. It sucks teh ballz, so I set into bridge mode and set up a Netgear Nighthawk behind it. ALL devices are connected to the Nighthawk.
- I want to set up the server for remote access so that family can grab pictures and files remotely, and so I can do the same.
- I followed the instructions and the auto setup (I had to forward ports 80 and 443 manually, but that's done), and from the server's perspective, it says it is set up:

And now the problem:
When I try to access the sever from INSIDE the network, it loads the login page no problem. BUT, when I do so from the outside, the server sends no data, nothing loads.
Am I missing a setting on the bridged gateway?

I don't do these posts (Hey look at me, I'm awesome!!!), but this one needed to be made...
I am a graduate of both WHS v1 and 2011. I liked both, missed drive extender, and loathed my ATT Gateway as a result. That said, they always backed up on time, and the way I wanted, with no issues (until Drive Bender decided to bork everything and my Windows 8 laptop refused to play nice with WHS2011).

Well, my server needed an upgrade anyway, so I decided to gut it (mostly) and start over with the new Server Essentials 2012. (SE2012 from here on)

Old Specs: Core 2 Duo E4400, 2gb DDR2, Some s775 Asus board, and a 9800GT PE + a 2TB WD Green.

New Specs: AMD A6-3650, 4GB DDR3, an MSI A55m-P33, an Intel 120gb SSD for the OS, and I added two more WD Green 2TB drives (total 6tb).

I cannot emphasize it enough how easy the setup was. Drivers installed with no issues, straight from the mobo disk, and then updated through windows update. Unlike with my two WHS installs, I didn't have to trick them into thinking it wasn't a server OS etc. Getting DriveBender back in the form of storage pools was awesome, and again, set up with no issues whatsoever including built in duplication. The entire process, hardware switch included, took MAYBE 2 hours. That includes setting up a domain on the network with SE2012.

So, compared to my previous server OS experience, I also like the new dashboard. It's a bit easier to work with and makes a little more sense, though some of the dire... Read more

Hi All,
Any help appreciated with this one!!
I have a Windows Server 2012 Essentials Server with Dell Perc 200 raid controller.
All generally works very well. But i have noticed if i copy files from one location to another location on the same hdd, the transfer rate starts reasonable and drops right down to 1-2mb / sec... or less... and sometimes goes to kb/sec and then sometimes drops to 0...
Any ideas or suggestions are welcomed?? Is it windows settings, the raid controller etc???
Thanks, Simon

What do you think, is it a good idea, to use Microsoft Security Essentials on production server and clients at the company?

I don't know if this is buried here on HOCP or not, but here it is just in case.

There is an article on SuperSite that explains how to add a computer to a Server 2012 Essentials machine (i.e. install the connector software) without it taking over the workstation and adding it to the domain.

Article...

Hopefully MS won't put some sort of bullshit block in for this in the final RTM.

Answer:Apparantly you CAN attach to Server 2012 Essentials without Domain

Nice to know. Might allow more people to use it w/o worrying about domain administration.

Ok, so after a long time working fine, my desktops stopped backing up.

So, as recommended by the TN Article for Client Backup issues, I started the Database Repair Utility in the Dashboard.

It starts, and after a while it fails and says it fails due to an unknown problem. I click the link it provides to find help, and it dumps me in the generic Server2012E page. I've not been able to find any help on this issue.

Any idea's ?

I also ran a SFT /Scannow on the server. The last time I had a client backup issue this fixed it.

Exact Error Wording:

Backup repair did not complete.
An unknown error prevented the backup repair process from starting. Make sure that all services are running then try again.

The services I know to check are indeed running.

I just have to say that GFI Mail Essentials is the best damn anti spam program for servers. The Bayesian Analysis works great. The DNS Blacklist works great. I work for this company and before I came they were getting 500 spam e mails in their in-box a day (and GFI was installed) then I set it to learn off the outbound e mails for a while (bayesian filter) and as soon as I got enough HAM e mails I activated it and BAM. 90% of spam stopped. Take note people who work for companies with programs like this : If you have auto whitelist on and you have trend scanmail for MS Exchange it will add all the senders of the virri to your WHITELIST!
The thing to do is :
1. Turn off Auto Whitelist
2. Weed through the whitelist created.
3. Goto the GFI Mail Essential Reporter.
4. Set it to print out domain statistics on the screen, set it to base it on # of e mails and set it to outbound only and BAM you got all the major players that the company e mails.
5. Goto NOTEPAD (old school) and based on how many e mails that people in your company/network send to particular domain addresses add them to the whitelist as *@whatever.com, well first put em in notepad and then transfer em. It really does not take that long but weeding out the bad e mail addys takes a long *** time. Even if you add the bad domains to the blacklist, if they are on the whitelist it bypasses it (which sucks). However, if you are a lazy systems admin and don't have jack **** to do because you did it all it is a g... Read more

I have a T410I (2516-73U) that came with Windows 7 64-bit Pro. My goal is to use Microsoft SCCM to load a base OS (Win 7 Pro 32-bit) and then the drivers in its modular approach. Have had success with a Dell model just recently. However, when following the same approach with the T410I it loads the OS and than all but the Intel(R) Graphics HD drivers come through. The error in device manager is "Resource conflict (code 12)". It doesn't allow you to change the I/O resources manually either. Tried via safe mode with no luck as well. It's worth mentioning that I have 4 of these and have replicated this across more than one. I then load the Lenovo system update tool. However, it states it is unable to update the drivers. In order to rule out SCCM, I manually took a Windows 7 32 bit install cd and walked through the manual install. Then loaded the NIC driver and then the system update tool. It grabs all the drivers but once again we are back to the "resource conflict (code 12)". Lastly, I was shipped the 32-bit recovery cds and reloaded one. After a network card driver update being needed, it loaded. I then proceeded to extract the drivers to load into SCCM and reload them manually (2 different system tests). However, the same results, "Resource conflict (code 12)". Any suggestions as to why or if their is a driver load order dependency or a 32bit vs 64bit handling of resources or ? and obviously if anyone had successfully used SCCM against t... Good morning,

Ever since I upgraded my computer to Windows 10 (Home) 64-bit a few months ago from Win 8.1 I have discovered the following Event ID 131 error in Event Viewer, sometimes as many as five times in a row, after restarting or upon booting up:

Metadata staging failed, result=0x80070490 for container '{1959BB49-AC94-11E5-AE34-3010B356F6E6}'

After googling for a few hours I did find a forum (TechNet) where this error was attributed to 'timing' and that Microsoft was aware of it.

A couple workarounds were given until Microsoft comes up with the fix. One workaround given was changing the time from 'Windows-time' to 'time-nist.gov'. However, even though it worked for some folks, it didn't stop the error in my Event Viewer.

I am just wondering if anyone on this forum has experienced the same Event Viewer error and maybe found a way to stop it from occurring.

Thanks and regards,

Alright, so first let me tell you I'm using a brand new Dell XPS Win8 machine.

However, when using the builtin Miracast feature in Windows, ( Devices > Project ), basically I initialize the connection (yes, the TV i'm connecting to DOES appear and stuff) but, however, the Screen Sharing unexpectedly ends after 2-3 seconds. I'm connecting to a Samsung Smart TV. After checking eventvwr, this error keeps appearing whenever this occurs:

Everything was going fine until I got this brilliant idea to try and burn my 'WINDOWS' file onto a cd. After I downloaded it to the staging area of the burning program I decided that I didn't need to burn this file because I have my 'XP' Operating CD so if all else fails I can always start completely over. anyways the problem here is that the staging windows won't let me clear the 'WINDOWS' file from the staging area. It gives me an error message of.... ***** Cannot delete ariali.ttf: ACCESS is Denied. ***** ....So now I cannot burn any files to a CD because this file HAS TO BE DELETED FIRST!!! What are my options from here? I would just go ahead and copy the file but it is to large to fit on one CD and this program does not allow multiple CD burning My computer has been running very slow so I wanted to copy files that were important and try and fix any issues after that..... and "IF" I had to do a complete wipe out of my computer than so be it. I've done it plenty of times but wanted to maybe learn something different than to wipe out the computer every time it slows down. I would like to thank anyone who can help with an outdated system.

Answer:'XP' CD Burner...I cannot get the staging area to clear. Very Frustrated!

To clear the waiting files, select the folders/files from the "Files to add to the CD" area and press Delete. However, if you want to clear all the files, right-click the CD-Recordable (CD-R) drive and select "Clear staging area" from the context menu.

You can also manually delete the files, which are stored in the %USERPROFILE%\Local Settings\Application Data\Microsoft\CD Burning folder. You can change this location by modifying the registry value HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\ExplorerShell Folders\CD Burning.

For about a week now, I have had a minor(seems minor) issue with opening any new browser session and being asked for username and password from hxxp://www.staging.ktsart.com. I push cancel every time and go on about my business. I have not logged on to any bank, credit report, or other financial sites in fear of identity theft possibilities. I currently have Bitdefender Total Security 2010 and it is updated and scans every night. My computer is private, and I don't even have a guest account. I never visit sites that look even remotely suspicious. I very rarely have viral encounters, and when I do, they are simple to fix/quarantine. I am a very obvious noob at these kind of forums, and would greatly appreciate any help. Thanks.

Question: Offsite Backup

Dear Community March 4, 2008
Having recently recovered from a Vundo infection ( Thanks to Sifumike at the HJT forum) I have become a bit obsessed with back up and other safe guards. I have heard of two companies offering offsite, over the internet, back up service. Mozy and Carbonite. Carbonite is less money , around $50 per year and supposedly unlimited space. I am not sure how it would work with Quickbooks. Mozy is more expensive $3.95 license and $.50 per GB. I have the same concern with Quickbooks. Other then Quickbooks I have a folder with business contact info. going back to 1990.Mostly word docs and some family pictures.
Anyone have any experience with either of these two services? Especially in a small home business setting.
All input is appreciated!!
Best Regards
Nawtheasta

Answer:Offsite Backup

Instead of paying out money, why not invest in a portable harddrive. You can back up all of your docs, pics ect when ever you want also quickbooks saves files as a QBB file you can copy it out to the portable hard drive when ever you want. Also you can back up your postable harddrive to dvd disks then you will have two backups.

Question: Offsite backup?

Good idea or bad idea? We have a safe deposit box at the bank that the drives where put into.

Now that I moved everything to a rack, it is locked and no one gets in, which also means no one gets to take the backups off site.

I'd like to have 1 backup disk on site and then the rest off site. We now have more of a decent internet connection so I don't think it would be a big issue to do it.

I have zero clue as to where to start to look or know who is good or bad.

Answer:Offsite backup?

Offsite backup is a must. What happens if you building burns down, or some other disaster strikes

How much data are you looking at? And how important is it?

Currently we have been using Ahsay, which has a lot of great features. But they are lacking, and their support just sucks. We have had some major issues and are currently looking at other possible solutions.

Anyone offer offsite backup and what software do you use? We are really looking for a system that installs an agent on the servers, does encryption and possibly have the same feature as in-file delta whereby it updates the files literally bit by bit instead of sending the full file over, saving on time and bandwidth.

Thanks!

Answer:Offsite backup software

iDrive (www.idrive.com) is what I've been using with a few business clients (rather iBackup, but it's the same thing except iDrive does Exchange and Database backups).

I have searched the forum for a while now only coming up with extremely expensive solutions or just recommendations to use some of the online backup services.

Anyway I work for a small IT company, mostly home/personal users and small business (<50 workstations). Everyone asks us for backup solutions, generally we setup the home/personal users with basic cd/dvd backup and the small business with some form of tape backup. We have many request for some off site backup. Instead of referring them to online providers, we want to provide this from our end. We have plenty of space on our server with the necessary backup.

What software can we buy that would allow us to backup the clients data to our server/servers? We would get a initial backup with an external drive. So we don't have the initial slowdown of backing up all the data over there upload speed. After the initial backup it would need to update the files on our side. Features probably wanted would be Open File backup, maybe Exchange(few clients have this).

Is there anything like this that doesn't cost a huge amount?

Hello all.
First off i want to say in terms of backup, i have a 1 TB NAS storage device installed on my network with clients using batch files to back up data locally. However, i have been looking into offsite backup to backup the NAS incase somthing ever happened to it, some other catastrophe happened to my home (i sure hope not). Right now i have hosting service here: www.fileho.com (its like you would holler, LAND HO! on a ship btw). The problem i have with em is that the site can take my data just fine. Downloading back off is another story where im crawling at like 1kbps. Im working on getting support to my problem but nothing so far. If anyone knows another free ftp hosting site with unlimited storage and file uploads/downloads please let me know. Thanks.

Hey everyone, currently I own an offsite data backup service but we use disk technology .. IE, software that backs up to enterprise SAN's. Many businesses still think tape is the best option (why I dont know, but they do). Anywho, because of this I have been thinking of opening a facility here in our town (phoenix, AZ) that would store and catalog companies offsite tapes.

My question is, for the people that tape and store it offsite, where do you store yours? Do you take them to a facility like I describe above, or what other methods of storage and cataloging do you use.

Also, another important thing is what is your guy's expected turnaround time in the case you ever needed a tape from offsite? 4-hours? 1-hour?

Answer:where do you send your offsite backups?

We just have em stored with a company we've contracted with. In the future we'll likely go to offsite disk (possible with level3 over private fiber), but we'll still use tape for permanly monthly snapshots.

Turn around on tape requests is usually next day, though if it were an emergency I'd hope to get it in a few hours.

Hi, I have just bought an HP Pavilion ab254sa laptop form Currys PC world. I checked my warranty status on the HP site and it says Wty: HP HW Maintenance Offsite Support  - active. I cannnot find any infromation what type of warranty is that and what does it cover...I would be really happy if someone can give me more details. Thanks a lot in advance, I really appreciate your help, Best wishes, Asya

Answer:Wty: HP HW Maintenance Offsite Support

Asya1, Off-site warranty means that you will either send it back to HP for repair or take it to an authorized service center for HP for repair. If your laptop is under warranty, you WILL NOT have to pay for shipping if being sent to a depot for repair. There have been some instances where consumers are asked to pay shipping to depot. HP covers all shipping costs, so don't ever pay to have your laptop repaired. One thing you may want to look into is "Accidental damage coverage" for your laptop, provided by HP. This covers things like spilling liquid on keyboard or dropping.... Your standard warranty from HP does not cover this type of damage, only electronic defects. Regards, Louis Enjoy your ,laptop

I've been using JungleDisk with Amazon S3, overall I've been pretty happy with it, it's fairly cheap. JungleDisk now offers the rackspace storage cloud as well. I'm staying on Amazon S3 as many of our linux machines run s3cmd and backup to the same amazon s3 account. We also use Mozy Pro, it costs more but it allows for centralized management and you can specify what you want users to have backed up.

We currently use a company that collects our tapes and stores them in a vault in one of the nearby canyons. Lately they have been very unreliable.

Problem is finding another company in the Salt Lake City area that provides the same services. Is there a site or place I should check that would list the services? Ive tried the yellowpages, googling, etc. and found only one other company, but can't tell if they service local.

Thoughts?

Two friends, over the past few years, have had fires that totally destroyed their homes, computers and all. One had just backed evrything up and left the HD on his dresser which turned to ash.Has anyone had experience with an offsite/online backup service that is safe but is priced for homeowners and not corporate networks with big budgets?

Answer:Offsite Backup Services?

I`m sure someone will suggest some services where you can upload to a secure server for a fee but realistically I couldn`t justify the cost for regular backups of a laptop and desktop. I have combined data of around 130Gb and I use Acronis True Image on both machines to make a full image backup, then incremental backups every few days. The only practical way is to back these up to an external hard drive and keep them off site. I keep one with me or leave it at a friends house until I do the backup routine.

I have Exchange Server 2003 setup and everyone at my company can access it at the office fine from either OWA or Outlook. Everyone can access it via OWA fine offsite as well. But when I try to setup Outlook 2003 for our Exchange server it cannot resolve the server name.

Here's how our network is laid out:
DC handles DNS which resolves fine from offsite. (If users go to test.domain.com they can get to email from a link on the homepage).
Mail server (mailserver.test.domain.com) will not resolve when using test.domain.com in Outlook 2003 for Exchange server.

Do I need to setup an MX record in DNS? I'm new with Exchange so please forgive my stupidity.

Edit: I have a public IP for the mail server which also serves IIS for test.domain.com.
Edit 2: I have a web hosting company that we use to server our website aka domain.com. I have a subdomain setup there (test.domain.com) that points to the public IP of the IIS/Mail server.

Answer:Access exchange from offsite

You can't just access Exchange offsite like that unless you open up all of the required ports on your firewall and create NAT translations if you servers are on a private network. What you need to do is setup and front-end/back-end configuration and use RPC over HTTP. This will require you to acquire a valid SSL certificate. If you are running only one Exchange server you can still do RCP over HTTP but the configuration is different. Do a search for it on Microsoft's site.

I have been having an odd problem with my computer for a few weeks, and I am stumped. Whenever I attempt to activate a link (to another website or a download) the screen freezes up for around a minute then returns to the page I was viewing as if I had not activated the link. In order to work most links, I have to manually copy and paste them to my address bar. That isnt a huge problem, but when the link opens a file, it does not respond 90% of the time. I have ran multiple scans with Ad-Aware, SpyBot, and NAV, but to no help. I have had a few other people look at it, and even called up the Alienware Tech Support, which was unable to help. Ive been searching everything I can think of on the internet and cannot find reference to a similar problem (I probably just dont know what to look for).

Any advice would be welcome!

I have a small CPA Firm in Dallas, TX currently we have 1 server with 2003 SBServer for everything. For backups we used tape drives, then switched to removable hard drives that i would take home with me and have at my house in case the place burned down or flooded or something i would have a copy at another location. Well this is great until my assistant forgets to do the backup or I take the wrong one home or forget to take one home altogether. Well the reason I'm looking for something different is because we are going paperless and our data needs are going to increase, also i want to take the human error out this process as much as possible.
What I want is software/service that will make an image of my entire server, and data that will be stored on my 16tb NAS at my house. It needs to automated. Ive looked at logmein.com but thats not really what im looking for. I want it to be a complete image so that if something happens i go unplug my nas at my house, take it up to the office plug it in, put in the recovery disk and then were back on our way. Im skeptical(clearly im an accountant) about storing my image, data on someone elses server not only from a security standpoint, but more from a recovery standpoint, i mean it would take days to download all the data from someone elses datacenter. I cant be down for days.

If you have any ideas, suggestions, criticisms I want to hear your very honest opinions.

Hi,

I need to figure out a back-up strategy for 6 TB of data. Docs/Media/Work.

Currently, I'm back-up up to external hard drives but this only covers me for onsite backup, plus, is a real pain to figure out what is on each disc.

Ideally, I'd live to have the data in the cloud as well backed up on premise.

Any idea if cloud backup of this size is practical? I was looking at CrashPlan, has anyone experienced loading this much to them?

Also, is there a better way I can backup on site? Software/Media wise.

I'd appreciate any help.

I have few customer who use it, I sell them a external 2.5 usb enclosure with a laptop disk inside

First off, thanks for looking.

My and a friend of mine need some help. We live in adjascent buildings in an apartment complex. We would like to have each other hold a hardrive networked so we can backup our stuff offsite easliy.

I run a Mac hooked up to a Linksys WRT54GL with tomatoe firmware (can go back to ddwrt if needed). That would be in my house so he could hook up to my router.

He runs linux boxes and has a Linksys WRT54GS with ddwrt firmware. I already own a Promise Nas that I would hook into his house for my backup needs.

He only has USB external harddrives but he can buy a nas enclosure if needbe.

We have line of site to each others apartments and its probably 100 yards away clear sky. We figured we'd both need some external antennas running outside to get clear signal.

The problem we are coming up with is how to network these so that they are secure and we can't see each other's files.

My idea would be to each buy a wireless extender and put them in each others house to extend our own networks. AKA My personal router would connect to a wifi extender in his apartment which has my NAS connected. I would log into it just like I would when its connected to my reg. router now.

He would have a router extender in my house with his harddrive connected so he can use it like it was local to him.

The issue we are trying to avoid is having to use the interenet becuase we'd both go over our 250gig cap with comcast.

I have multiple copies of the things I consider important, but most of the time, they are all together in my house, rendering them useless to a fire or other disaster. What I would like to do is put a hard drive in my parent's computer that I can access and backup to. I know little to nothing when it comes to accessing computer remotely outside of logmein (I think I used remote desktop assistance? a long time ago). Both networks have DSL and will have dynamic addresses.

The computer that hosts the original files runs Win7 Pro and I am intending on putting XP Pro on my parents (god they hate change), but I might be able to convince them to go with Win7 if it makes this much easier. I would rather have a backup that I can access files in instead of some sort of archive file. Speeds will be slow, but I will do the entire backup over LAN or USB initially.

Please let me know what questions I need to answer and any recommendations to look at.

My company needs a solution to a problem and I don’t have the server expertise to come up with an exact solution but maybe someone here already has figured this one out. We currently have over a hundred job sites throughout the company working on projects. We currently run everything off Citrix for our outlook access, word processing, timberline and ect. Many of us are tired of using Citrix and have convinced the company we can do business without it but need a solution to some things.

We have a lot of files that only the individual projects require at any one time so the process of having to log onto Citrix to retrieve these files is tedious and slow depending on the file size which can be large. The more tech savvy projects have gone to project NAS and server setups. The problem with these are they do not automatically perform backup to the companies servers. We usually deploy 2-20 computers and tablets on the job sites depending on size of the project that will need access to files on the onsite server. Is there an easy to set up, think non-technical people but can make a phone call and follow directions well, server or NAS system that could be deployed at these job sites that will automatically backup to the companies servers every few days or so? Projects take anywhere from 6 months to 4 years or more so the solution needs to be able to take apart and reinstalled on a new project without too much headache. I have a “not so helpful” IT team to deal with... Read more

Answer:Automatic file backup from offsite storage

We use http://owncloud.org/ at our office, its not super hard to setup if you follow the instructions and read them first.

I would also suggest Google Apps for Business if you are non-technical.

The above would be a simple way of just sharing and saving documents, not on to machines.

If you want to backup every machine individually I would check out CrashPlan Pro E or something from CrashPlan as its very inexpensive, if you choose Pro E you can buy the software and host the backup server yourself so all of your devices will backup to your own server in-house.

Figured I'd share as others may learn from this mistake.

Basically, my offsite backups go on my dedicated server that is online, under a "backup" account.

The problem is, the password to that account is in my PINs file, on my network. But if something was to happen to my network, making me need those backups, I would not have that password! Wow, what a fail. Thankfully I don't REALLY need them, but it just hit me. All my hard drives are at my parents' house as I'll be away from home for a few days and don't want to risk my data getting stolen (lot of B&Es in this area)

So this is kinda a good simulation test of a large scale disaster situation such as a house fire. I was wanting to get on my MSN and realized my passwords is in my pins database which is accessible from my offsite backups, but the password to get to it is in the pins database!

So yeah, I need to come up with a better setup I think. I'm not sure what. I can't just use an easy password that I can remember either. In fact I don't even think it's a password to get into that account, it's a shared key. But really if I can just keep the root password somewhere, or try to make one I can remember but that is still hard, maybe that's my best bet.

I'm just glad I caught this now. I can't imagine the horror if this was a real situation. I'd essentially have lost everything. I could get my host to change the r... Read more

Hello all,
I have a small question about making off site backups to an ftp. I have a good service (thanks again speakersrock for space on your servers) that i use for off site backup. I have the system set up using batch files which utilitze the command line version of winrar to download files from my local NAS and rar them into an archive that is then uploaded to the server. This system seems to work fine, however, i would just like to know if the method i have for security is sufficient. Right now i have it set with -hp switch for password protection. I assume it is winrar's 128bit AES security but i have read that the password can be discovered by digging through the noise that the password protection creates in the rar. What i want to know is if this simple thing is sufficient in terms of security. The pc i have doing it is protected as well as it is run off of a pc with an always on account set with a very short screensaver/screenlock time. That way the machine will always be at a logon screen (account needs to be on because of windows scheduling issues). But in any event, is what im doing now plenty secure against any hacking or should i tighten security up more with an application like truecrypt? I believe the ftp is just plain authentication without ssl. Any advice would be appreciated.

Hi Guys,

I have just got Microsoft Office Accounting and it looks fab. I've use quickbooks, MYOB, sage and had a go at most other accounts software. MOA is the most intuative I've found and will probably become the insuatry standard just as MS Word is. MS are actaully giving the expresss version away for Free by download form thier site ! but I'm using the Pro version Ł149.00 ( cheap) with Outlook intergration , and I have a question of anyone who has used it.

We have Reps all round the Country, and they call on customers and take orders for products. Does anyone know how a Rep can take an order and send the order back to the office electronically (email, vpn, or anything) so it doesnt have to be re inputted one product at a time all over again.

idealy I'd love to have an ordering pane on a PDA or laptop, and the order is sent back as an email or something, and we can import the orders staight into MOA.

This is a real problem for us and the only way we can do it at the moment is to fax back a paper copy and someone in the office enter it in one at a time all over again.

MOA uses sql, access, excel, as its platform so if anyone is interested in writing something please let me know.
