Preferred Solution: Windows update fails code 800700C1 SFC fails also

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Good evening, it has been a while. I got a custom built computer about a year ago so that I can play FSX and P3D reasonably well. Everything seemed to go ok, not great, just ok. This are my specs:
Intel i7 [email protected] - Nvidia EVGA GTX 970 4gb - Asus Z97 Maximus Hero VII - WD black series 1TB HD - Corsair RM series RM850 - Samsung 840 EVO MZ-7TE500BW 500gb SSD.
About a month ago I started to notice that my wifi connection would be lost, then come back on its own. It got worse about two weeks ago, so I tried running the troubleshooter, it failed saying an error prevented it from running. Odd I thought.
I tried running windows updater, it downloaded a number of files to update, but continuosly failed to install 3 of them, apparently related to Microsoft Net Framework.
This morning I decided to uninstall P3D, and install a clean updated version, and the setup failed, never happened before. In the forums it adviced to make sure Direct X9 is installed, tried doing that and it failed as well.
This is very stressful, and affects my immune system, which is not good for me. Can someone here please be kind enough to take some time to help me solev this mess, thanks very much.
This are some logs from what happened today.

For about the past two months Windows update has failed to run. If I try to run it manually it just sits there spinning its wheels. It does not appear to end or produce an error code.
I have seen the message "could not check for updates automatically"
I've been to the MS site and downloaded both
and the third party
Repair-tool.exe by ParetolLogic
but none of these fix the problem.
Today I have run SURT as instructed and the output from sfc /scannow is attached.
Update is still refusing to do anything.

installed windows 7 sp1 from dell restore cd onto dell laptop.
have all drivers installed.
have reinstalled from restore cd 3 times now, I continue to get error code 8024402C when trying to do windows update. I have tried leaving it on fully automatic update, the no updates do manually setting, and everything in between.
IE11 and firefox get on the web with no problem, the only other software installed is security essentials and this failed update happens before installation of that. I am positive no software installed afterwards is causing this problem, as i have done re-installation of windows 3 times now including blanking the hard drive.
this last time i have manually downloaded and installed IE11 and .net 4.5.
I try the microsoft windows automated update troubleshooter which downloads windowsupdatediagnostic.diagcab. It reports:

1) windows update error 0x8024402c(2015-03-22-T-01_36_33P) - not fixed.
2) service registration is missing or corrupt - fixed.
3) problems installing recent updates - fixed.
4) problems installing recent updates - fixed.

I go into the detailed report for the above, it shows everything fixed in green including the (1) that says not fixed, and doesn't allow me to do anything else.
the other microsoft troubleshooters i've ran all say no problems detected.
what do i do from here?
the few other things i've found online i've checked, settings are already that such as internet options lan settings automatically detect.

Hi, I'm looking at a window 8.1 Sony PC , that has not been able to get an update for almost a year now
140 Updates available - and they fail within 30seconds with an errorcode800700C1 Looking into this error I ran the SFC \scannow and it failed unable to repair files
I then looked that up and talked on chat to MS and was suggested to run
DISM /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
which also failed with Error: 0x800f0906

The source files could not be downloaded.
Use the "source" option to specify the location of the files that are required t
o restore the feature. For more information on specifying a source location, see

So i looked that up and found this article
which I have also ran
the CMD commands
and the re-ran DISM again
which resulted in the same error
any suggestions please
I have attached the SFC /scannow log for just (SR)
and the DISM log

Answer:Windows update not working - SFC fails and DISM fails

Please run chkdsk /r, or chkdsk /f if you are using a SSD.
To run chkdsk /r in Windows 8/8.1 you will need to open the Elevated Command Prompt.  The easiest way to do this is to press the Windows key and the X key.   A menu will open with the option Command Prompt (Admin), click on this.
You will see a window similar to the one below.

When the Elevated Command Prompt opens copy and paste chkdsk /f in the Command Prompt, if this is a SSD you do not want to run the /r switch, you will want to use chkdsk /f then press Enter.
You will receieve the message "CHKDSK cannot be run because it is in use by another process.  Would you like to schedule this volume to be checked the next time the system restarts?  <Y/N>".
Type in Y and press Enter.
This will take a while to run, please be patient and allow it to complete the scan.  Do not stop this scan as this can damage your operating system.
When the scan is finished please download and run ListChkdskResult.
This will open Notepad with the results of the chkdsk scan.  Please copy and then paste this log in your topic.

I recieve error C80003FA whenever I do a Windows Update run. It doesn't get past the stage of checking for updates.

I've tried several fixes including:
- Waiting 15 minutes and running Windows Update again.
- Letting Windows Update run on its own schedule.
- SFC /Scannow
- Renaming the Catroot2 Folder.
- Running 3 different Fixit tools.
- Clean windows install.

After each and every one of those fixes I've tried windows update and I still get error C80003FA.

SFC Scannow has previously said no errors, but the last run through it said there were unfixable errors. I've got the log, though for brevity's sake I will keep it until someone asks for it.

Any ideas?

Answer:Windows Update fails in Update Check. Error code C80003FA.

Clean windows install doesn't fix it? You must be blocked, maybe your firewall???

I'm simply attempting to run update on my Windows 7 machine. Update will not run, downloading and running the SP1 update fails, downloading and running the Update Readiness Tool fails, trying to launch a troubleshooter fails. I ran sfc and have attached the log along with all the error codes screenshots. I have no idea how to proceed from here other than to drop this machine off at the nearest recycling center.

Answer:update fails, SP1 install fails, troubleshooter fails

Looks to me like you're having problems accessing the COMONENTS registry hive - although I would have thought that would also make a SFC scan fail.

I suspect I know what the problem is - let's see if a different tool can expose it...

My machine hasn't been able to update for a few weeks. Windows Update opens, but attempting to download "Security Update for Windows 7 for x64-based Systems (KB2585542)" fails with error code 80073712. There was a second update of the same sort that was also not working before; I eventually managed to get that update to complete by running Fixit in aggressive mode. Nothing I've done has helped with the remaining failure, though.

Let me know what other information I should provide. Thanks in advance.

Unfortunately, Windows can not perform updates anymore: it immediately issues an error code 800B0100.

Since mid February, all of my Windows update patches have continually failed with and error code of 80070308. I have never had an issue with any Windows Updates prior to mid February. I am running Windows 7 Professional SP1 64 bit. I have a newer Dell XPS8500 machine with 32 GB RAM and an Intel Core i7-3770 CPU @ 3.4 GHZ. The following updates continually fail:

Cumulative Security Updated for IE 11 for Windows 7 x64 based systems (KB2909921)
Security Update for Internet Explorer 11 for Windows 7 for x64-based Systems (KB2909210)

Security Update for Windows 7 for x64-based Systems (KB2912390)

Update for Windows 7 for x64-based Systems (KB2843630)
Update for Windows 7 for x64-based Systems (KB2919469)

I tried running the "Fix it" program recommended in the MS troubleshooting link, but that did not help. I have also tried installing with Norton 360 turned off (both virus protection and firewall). Any help that you can provide would be most welcome. Thanks in advance!

Hello experts,

I have ASUS Essentio mini-pc with Windows Vista Home Premium x64 installed.
I did run virus checker, spy checker, several registry cleaners.
I spent a week on it , as well Microsoft support logged in for an hour.
I did run the batch file re-registering DLL's.
The original error 80070424 is gone since I run the "ErrorFix" utility.

My recovery CD form the manufacturer is only to wipe out all what I have installed and reload the "vanilla" system. Windows repair option is not available.
This is for me out of question, to many programs are installed on my system.

Here is the problem I think:
Windows installer is missing,
Windows Installer 4.5 Redistributable installation fails. error code 1603
"Windows update" does not work, error code: 80040154

1. Is there any way to restore the Windows Installer files ?
2. Upgrading to Windows Vista Ultimate version will fix the missing files ?

Any other suggestions?

All Windows automatic updates have been failing since 2015-11-12. The last successful update was the Windows Malicious Software Removal Tool x64 - November 2015 (KB890830) on 11/12/2015 03:17. The first failed update since then was Security Update for Windows 7 for x64-based Systems (KB3100213) on 11/13/2015 20:25.

Manual installation of the pending updates does not work. Reboot does not install the pending updates either. Another symptom was that Windows was no longer detecting my third party Anti-Virus software. I removed and reinstalled the software thinking it might be related and Windows started detecting the Anti-Virus software again but I can no longer access the computers from other computers on my home network. For now let's focus on the Windows problem which may be hardware failure induced--hardware crash/power cycle without a Shutdown.

System details are as follows:Dell XPS 420 Desktop
Windows 7 Home Premium 64 bit, SP1

Intel RAID 1 volume with two Seagate Barracuda ST1000DM003-9YN162 1 TB SATA Hard Drives
Dell KM632 Wireless Keyboard and Mouse
McAfee Internet Security Suite

Symptoms and troubleshooting to date indicates I have an intermittent hard drive failure. It appears that one of the two drives needs to be replaced. Dell boot diagnostics reported a hard drive error code 2000-0142 and one drive has dropped out of the array a... Read more

The last Windows Update I was able to successfully download was on March 16.  Since then, it fails almost immediately with an error code of 8024402C.  Underneath that it says that the last update date was Never.  I tried just running one tiny 300KB update with the same results.
At that time I tried to scan my Dell e6410 with Microsoft Security Essentials, but it wouldn't update either.  I finally was able to manually download updates.
Neither MSE nor MalwareBytes can find anything wrong.
Chkdsk completed normally.
System File Checker completed OK.
The links to GMER from this forum wouldn't load the page.
The C:\ drive is only 1% fragmented, which in my mind doesn't justify the risk of running a defrag.
And this is the weirdest part:  When I attempt to restart the Windows Defender service, it stops itself.

I've had issues for a while about certain updates failing when installing, usually with the error code 8007054F. I've basically been hiding the updates that have been failing but having come across this forum I thought I might see whether anyone here could help me out with my problem.

I've tried installing the SURT, running a SFC scan and then installing updates and I've still had the same issues. I also tried running's Windows repair program to see if that would help. I tried to install KB2973337, KB3003057 and KB2868725 one by one in the last day or so to create some log files to be analysed. I actually had to delete some of the archived logs in the CBS folder to create a reasonably sized zip file.

My impression is that if Windows needs to be rebooted to install an update, then that update will fail.

Here's a full list, as far as I am aware, of updates that always fail to install for me (apologies for all the text):

I know it would be better if i could name them but can't remember the exact commands .. will look for the page again. One dealt with sfc /newscan (or such).

Really need to get this working again .. any ideas or pointers?

Answer:Windows 10 start button fails, search fails restart fails

Yes, left click on start button and right click on task bar icons does nothing?
Tried flhthemi's suggestion "Open powershell with admin privileges Copy and paste this line at the PS prompt:
Get‐AppXPackage ‐AllUsers | Foreach {Add‐AppxPackage ‐DisableDevelopmentMode ‐Register

Worked once but problem came back and wouldn't work the second time?

Tried the .bat file from AveYo's suggestion, lost my wifi connection and couldn't restart it, had to revert to a previous restore point.

Anyone know a fix for this?

When I try to install KB3182373, a "Security Update for Microsoft Silverlight", Windows Update reports failure with the message "Code 643 Windows Update encountered an unknown error".
I ran WindowsUpdateDiagnostic.diagcab. It reported that "Troubleshooting couldn't identify the problem".
What can I do to fix this? I'm running Windows 7 Professional.

For 2 weeks now, I have been completely unable to get Windows Update to run properly on my Windows 7 SP1 Ultimate x64 computer. I have no idea what I did to cause this and I've done some limited troubleshooting to no avail. I would really appreciate any assistance you could offer.
Per the instructions, I have completed the following:

1) I ran the latest version of SURT for my OS.
2) I attempted to run SFC, When sfc /scannow is run from the elevated command prompt, I get the following error:
"Windows Resource Protection could not perform the requested operation."

When I attempt to run sfc /scannow from the recovery command prompt, I get this error:
"There is a system repair pending which requires a reboot". Please note that I do not have a reboot.xml or a pending.xml file in my Windows\winsxs folder.
3) When I attempt to run Windows Update, I consistently get the following error code: 8007370B. Not sure if this helps or not, but when I run the updater, I usually get the TrustedInstaller.exe process running and consuming approximately 13% CPU. Sometimes the error appears within seconds, and sometimes it takes 1 hour of Windows searching for an update before that error code will appear.
4) I have uploaded my log files here:
If there is any further information required, please let me know. I would like to thank you in advance for your assistance!

I receive a similar error again on our HP Pavilion Notebooks with AMD CPU when updating to Windows 10 Creator update as last time when updating to Windows 10. Our office has a few of the 17-G133cl notebook computers and all of them display the same error message: We couldn't install Windows 10 - 0xC1900101 - 0x20017 - The installation failed in the SAFE_OS phase with an error during BOOT operation. Which is similar to the error displayed during the initial Windows 10 update except that the error shown was 0x1900101 - 0x20000. Back then a BIOS update that became available that fixed the issue. We check for a new BIOS, but all notebooks have the latest BIOS already installed v. F.41 from 9/19/2016. All other systems including other none HP AMD computers upgraded just fine. Any ideas what could cause this issue with that type of system?

Hi folks

I found my way here after being unable to update to IE10 on Windows 7 (32)

the windows update error is:

"Internet Explorer 10 for Windows 7
Installation date: ‎09/‎05/‎2013 10:22 AM
Installation status: Failed
Error details: Code 9C59
Update type: Optional"

I have attached the file. (NB: when I pasted the copy of CBS folder to my desktop I got an error message that access to CBS.log was denied. Maybe this is normal?)

I'd be most grateful for any help you can give.

the copy/paste problem is common - which is one reason why I tend to prefer just collecting the CBS.log file on its own.
Copy the C:\Windows\logs\CBS\CBS.log file to your desktop, and compress it, then upload that.

Hi there,

I have a lop top with Windows 7 64 bit OS. Of lately, Windows update keeps failing to install some software updates. Here are the details of the s/w that would not install.

Security Update for Windows 7 for x64-based Systems (KB2731847)
Security Update for Windows 7 for x64-based Systems (KB2712808)

Every time I login, the windows update poops up and asks me to restart the computer. After trying to restart, it fails. Next time, it does the same thing again.
Please let me know the solution.

Answer:Windows Update fails everytime. Error details: Code 80242014

Install them one by one and restart every time? It's a bit tedious but it should work.

These are the details from the update history:

"Windows 7 Service Pack 1 for x64-based Systems (KB976932)

Installation date: ‎2015/‎05/‎20 12:11 PM

Installation status: Failed

Error details: Code 80073701"

As far as I can tell it has something to do with IE 9 which I am unable to uninstall - it does not appear in the list of installed programs.

I have run the system update readiness tool (Windows6.1-KB947821-v34-x64.msu) and sfc /scannow. I have attached the CBS.log as instructed here : Windows Update Posting Instructions.

Hope someone can help (I saw a very similar error with an apparently happy ending on these forums).

Windows update for IE10 on Windows 7 64bit fails continuously with error code 9c59. I tried the stand alone updater with the same results. All other windows updates complete successfully, it's just IE10 that continually fails.

Don't know if this is related but I do have problems with IE8 (current browser). After a while, an open IE window will become non responsive and can't be closed out. I have to use task manager to close it down. I have sent off the reports to MS, but no solution has appeared.

I've attached the cbs file. Let me know what else I can do. Thanks.

Answer:Windows update for IE10 on win7 64bit fails with error code 9c59

There are no significant file errors in either SFC or CheckSUR logs.

In these cases, it has sometimes been a solution to uninstall IE9, reboot a couple of times, and then reinstall IE9 again, before installing IE10 successfully.
It's worth a try

Everytime I try to run Windows Update, it tells me it encountered an unknown error and gives me that code.

I ran SURT, it didn't fix the problem.

I opened an elevated Command Prompt and ran sfc /scannow. It told me that it found corrupt files but it could not correct them. I even ran it in Safe Mode and also at boot and it still couldn't fix the corrupt files. I have attached the log file for that, the CBS log file and the DISM log file. Attempting to run Dism /Online /Cleanup-Image /CheckHealth gave me error code 87.

I have also tried to run the Windows system repair feature on the install DVD but even that was unsuccessful in solving the problem.

I don't have any restore points prior to 6-17-15 when the issue started since they were deleted in an attempt to fix this problem.

I don't have any registry backups prior to 6-17-15 either, although another user was performing registry edits on this laptop and deleted the backups that he created.

I have the correct original System32 file and all of it's contents on my desktop that I extracted from a Windows 7 install DVD that I can use if needed but I am uncomfortable with replacing these files without knowledgable help.

Hopefully this will give you enough information to help me solve this problem.

Thanks in advance.

Hi -

Windows Update error 800B0100 = TRUST_E_NOSIGNATURE = A certificate chain processed, but terminated in a root certificate which is not trusted by the trust provider.

There may be a root security check issue. Try re-registering Wintrust.dll -

So, earlier today, everything was fine. My computer was working normally nothing was acting up. While unplugging my laptop from the wall I dropped it, but nothing appeared to be wrong. A little while later I restarted my computer and it worked fine for about a minute and then everything froze in windows explorer, nothing would work, folders wont open task manager never appears start menu wont come up, nothing.
I booted into safe mode and everything works fine through there, so I looked around online and one suggestion was to update my BIOS so I tried to update from Dells Inspiron 1420 A08 to the newer A10 BIOS version, trying that in safe mode failed so I tried to boot normally and quickly do whatever it told me, when I tried it wouldnt restart (and still refuses too, I have to shut it down manually outside of safe mode) it said it couldnt update the BIOS version because it couldnt locate the image, but I downloaded it directly from Dells own website.
So then I tried to do a system restore, and I got the message:

The disk Vista (c:) has errors
Windows detected file system corruption on Vista (c:)
You must check the disk for errors before it can be restored.

So I clicked scan and fix, and nothing happens. (this is back in safe mode by the way) so I opened a command promp and typed sfc /scannow
and it scanned and found some errors but were unable to fix them. Details are located in the CBS.log
So I opened the log and I found the following:

Hi, the first rule if you ever drop a laptop (and it appears OK) is to take the battery out, boot from the mains if all is OK turn off add battery and reboot. Now you may have damaged the MB and or the RAM seating or HDD cable connection as well as the monitor connect cable.. etc ...etc. You can see where this is heading to the shop would be my advice.

About a week ago update keep saying an update failed due to lack of drive space so I fixed the issue. After that the update went through but keep failing and the pc would boot and remove the update. The pc was working normally otherwise. I have been extremely busy with work so ignored the issue hoping to resolve it this weekend however yesterday I came home to the pc endlessly rebooting. Just before the reboot the windows logo appears and then a message pops up saying restoring your previous version of windows. I have read many threads about the issues people are having but didn't find any that offered up a fix for mine. Spoke with MS Support and the best they could do with tell me to reinstall the OS.

Win10 64bit
Gigabyte mobo

System Restore fails
Startup repair fails
Go back to previous build fails
No option to get into safe mode that I can find

I can boot from Ubuntu CD and pc is working properly.

Can anyone offer any ideas? Thank you in advance.

Answer:Boot loop after update no safe mode option-repair fails- restore fails

Please boot your computer with Windows Setup Media and from Windows Recovery Environment start the Command Prompt.
Please execute below command and reboot your computer to see issue resolves.

DISM /Image:C:\ /Cleanup-Image /RevertPendingActions

Please replace partition letter C: with Windows installed partition letter. When computer boots into Windows Recovery Environment (WinRE) environment the drive letter assign to Windows partition may not be C: drive letter because Windows 7, 8 , 8.1 and 10 creates a separate system partition when it's installed from scratch. The system partition contains boot files WinRE assigns the system partition the C: drive letter and the Windows installed partition will be assign any other drive letter usually D: drive letter is assign to Windows installed partition. The Bcdedit /enum | find "osdevice" command can be use to find out the drive letter of the Windows installed partition the output of the Bcdedit command is similar to this osdevice partition=D:. The drive letter after partition= is the drive letter of the Windows partition.

Here is the list of the problems in order of which I noticed things going awry:

1. My Firefox browser will re-direct my google searches to a new Firefox window pop-up with "google-analytics" in its address bar, but would never finish loading the new popped-up window. Firefox would also re-direct and never finish loading my google searches by opening a new tab with a "" in its address bar.

2. Microsoft Office 2010 applications don't open, instead a "DW20.exe" and a "DWWin.exe" replicates itself an infinite number of times in my processes, maxing out my CPU.

3. My anti-virus applications (Spyware Doctor, Microsoft Security Essentials, avast!, malwarebytes) won't update, and therefore won't run or scan. Firefox also won't load various anti-virus sites, such as this message board.

4. Other applications crash directly upon opening them (VLC Media Player)

Solutions that I've tried:

1. Resetting my router. I'd read somewhere online that doing this would solve the problem. It did not.

2. Trying to restore from a restore point. I opened System Restore, but the restore points were all very recent and within the timeframe of infection.

3. Un-installing Microsoft Office 2010 and re-installing. System won't let me un-install.

Here are my scan reports:

Not long ago (a week and a half or so) I was playing Payday 2 and my computer froze, I turned off my computer to restart it and could not load my computer past a pre-loading windows black screen where the mouse was not showing. I then tried booting my computer in various ways (safe, with and without networking etc) and they worked, however I believe one of my drivers failing to load was the reason for my "Windows Normal" startup to fail. I eventually decided through, I then looked at using the system restore point function in order to hope for some success. The system restore function when I restored to; a week ago, two weeks ago, did not seem too alleviate my issue much, it did however allow me to load windows but almost immediately after using the machine for 2-5 minutes I would have a frozen screen again. I then eventually decided to just factory reset the machine out of desperation, the factory reset eventually happened successfully and I was able to load windows and login into my new user successfully, as I learnt that I had to reinstall my graphical drivers I then attempted to put in various CD's in in order to install these drivers, eventually when I figured out the order of CD's that I needed to install for my games to load properly, I then resumed my activities on my pc (such as gaming, browsing etc).
Flash forward to the second factory reset, this one happened due to a very similar freezing problem yet again, and again I decided to turn off my computer ... Read more

Hi guys!
Haven't received the W10 pop up notification yet, although I have reserved (UK) so out of curiosity I was checking win update for any recent updates for my 8.1 machine and after various successful security updates and a restart I was then surprised to see 'Downloading Windows 10' when I checked again. However, for over an hour now an update- which is only 3.9mb fails not allowing me to update anything else.. according to the update info this small update is an 'anti malware' update from March of this year- KB3025417 and is listed as 'important'... the update install list even has 'update to Windows 10 Pro' listed as failed, reflecting my multiple attempts..
I've just restarted the same 'Windows 10 download' via Win update and its saying 'Getting set up files..' and seems to be taking considerably longer than it had in the past attempts.. could this be it finally, regardless of the failed Win defender update??
15 minutes gone so far...

Answer:Win10 update fails- 3.9mb file 'KB3025417' fails every time... help!

can someone please help me here pleeeeease? no Win10 luck at all... now im getting error '80244019' and cant check for updates... the original anti-malware update from march still wont install. i have run a malwar scan and its 'clean' no W10 popup yet. its failed about 20 times now. help!

Checking update history shows no errors, just the update waiting to be installed.
Here's what happens: update goes all the way through to the end, then it hangs with a black screen with the little dots going round and will sit like that for as long as I'll let it. There's no hard drive activity during this period.
When I eventually get bored of waiting, I do a hard reboot and the previous version is reinstated.
Any ideas how to move on from this?

Answer:Win10 Anniversary Update fails, but no error code.

Do you use disk imaging routinely as we strongly advise? Best to create (or update) a disk image before upgrading, else you could land yourself in difficulties you simply don't want. Think and act defensively. E.g. Macrium Reflect (free) + its boot medium + external storage for image sets.

We're planning to push BIOS updates to all our systems in the near future. However, in testing we've noticed that some systems will fail installation with error code 211. The problem seems to be related to a changed BIOS logo, since when ran manually, the updater asks if it should overwrite the existing logo or keep it. This seems to cause problems when you run the BIOS update executable "winuptp64.exe" with the "-s" (silent) argument. Is there a solution to this, like an argument that forces overwriting of logo or keep existing? Full error log:[2018/1/24 11:40:47] version 25.26

Security Update for Windows 7 for x64-based Systems (KB3033929)

Installation date: ?3/?11/?2015 8:57 AM

Installation status: Failed

Error details: Code 80004005

Update type: Important

A security update. . .

I can't find any info on this error.  Tried the update twice and both times it failed.

Answer:Update KB3033929 fails with error code 80004005

You may want to try the following:
1) Running the following FIX-it (for resolving WUS issues)
  LINK:  ~

2) Then change windows update to "manual" update mode (as aposed to install updates automatically)
3) Scan for updates
4) Uncheck and then "hide" KB KB3033929
The update should no longer download or install going forward.
You can then revert the WUS to ?automatic? if you desire (recommended).
Perhaps MS will FIX and re-release this in the future.
At that point you could choose to ?unhide? the patch and then
try to reinstall it at that time.

It fails if I try and update IE11 from directly or do it through windows update.

This is a new build, with a fresh install of win7, the current IE is 8.

Any ideas!?

EDIT: I feel I should mention that I don't want to actually use IE11, it's just that windows update keeps automatically trying to install it and fails, every single day, time and time again.

Answer:IE11 update fails with 'Code 9C59' error.

I should also add that I have done both the SURT and SFC scan.

Hello Everyone!

This has been a most frustrating problem for me. Ultimately I have been trying to install the online role playing game "Darkfall". My installation fails and I am prompted that I need to have a version of Internet Explorer greater than 6.0

Well that is a little strange since i am running 9.0 (I don't think I had a chance not to have it because of windows update anyway)

So I go to the Microsoft website and click to download IE9, I am prompted that a more recent version is installed on my system. Figures right?

So I begin to look at my options. I attempt to uninstall and reinstall IE9 through the uninstall located in add remove programs (in the update part) That fails and tells me that "An error has occured. Not all updates where successfully uninstalled."

So than I try to do a manual uninstall by removing the trusted installer control of the files. That didn't work and I did a system restore because I didn't feel good about that action.

So Than I try to uninstall from the command line using:

FORFILES /P %WINDIR%\servicing\Packages /M Microsoft-Windows-InternetExplorer-*9.*.mum /c "cmd /c echo Uninstalling package @fname && start /w pkgmgr /up:@fname /norestart"

That fails telling me that "Operation Failed with 0x80070005 Access is Denied.

Well I just quit for a few days because that was very frustrating. Now I see that there is an update for IE9 in my windows update. Well maybe that is the pr... Read more

Hi zatoichi,

As you've correctly isolated, Windows in your system has failed to install an update on numerous occasions:

Though unlikely, you may still try resetting the 'Windows Components' to see if that helps: How do I reset Windows Update components?

If the issue persists, please try a manual install:

You may also refer to the following 'Microsoft Article' that recommends 'Windows Repair' in this case, if 'System Update Readiness Tool' fails to fix it: Windows Update error 80070490

Trying to update an existing Win10 1703 to 1709. It fails consistenly with the following error messages:
We couldn't install Windows 10
We've set your PC back to the way it was right before you started installing Windows 10

0xC1900101 - 0x20017

The installation failed in the SAFE_OS phase with an error during BOOT operation

Per this web page, the 0xC1900101 - 0x20017 error code means that there is a problem with a driver, and recommends checking the setupact.log and setuperr.log files for additional information. Looking at these files, I can't figure out what's going wrong. I'm attaching them to this post in hopes that someone else can glean some info from them.

I've updated all the drivers on the machine and the problem persists. I have also done the following in an attempt to get past this problem:
- ran chkdsk c: /f
- ran disk cleanup utility
- tried the update from a clean boot

I'm attaching several files in hope that someone can provide some assistance with this issue.

Harry Z.

I noticed that a recent security update failed (KB979683) with code FFFFFFFF. I read that this maybe down to a malware infection. I tried MWBAM and AVG but no infections were found, I ran online scans at Panda Scan and Kaspersky but there were no errors so I tried MRT and it detects Virus:Win32/Alureon.A and reports partial deletion, however after reboot it is still there and the security update still fails.

I would be most grateful if anyone help me fix this problem

So you try to run the 'rate my computer' and it fails showing this error message:

You are then advised to run a command prompt (old dos screen) as administrator and key in and run
winsat formal.

This fails and gives the following error messages:
error. failed to load XML
An invalid character was found in text content

Error: cannot process assessment results cannot load xml data from string
an invalid character was found in text content from interface msxm16.dll:Ixmldomdocument2

You start searching for these invalid characters after reading the various help threads out there such as this one: Windows Expierience Index could not be computed

You learn that not only does your computer have a bios but also something called a smbios, you may find it in registry thus:

Note the odd square OO's after version.
You might confirm this using HWiNFO, HWiNFO32 & HWiNFO64 - Hardware Information and Analysis Tools utility as seen here:

Editing the registry value will not work! Updating the bios probably won't work. The answer to this most frustrating problem is as follows:

I took on a basket case for a friend. Machine hadnt booted for months. I got it running in normal mode after it churned for 2 hours and found outdated Norton Internet security and AVG running. Unable to uninstall them using uninstall, so got in registry and deleted all mentions of AVG, Norton and Symantec. Managed to download and install Windows updates and SP 3 for XP as well as IE 8. Tried to install Microsoft security essentials but it won't install. Ran Malware bytes which found about 15 threats which I let it delete. I then installed while online Avast! and it seems to run.Tried to install Word viewer, got error message, then ran Malwarebytes again, one more threat found. Now only boots in safe mode with networking, so tried installingword viewer again, same error (install failed). IE now won't start.
I think I must have accidentally deleted something I need while going through registry deleting Norton stuff. I tried System File Checker but it wanted original install CD to proceed and I don't have it.
I have tried running Combofix in safe mode without letting it fix anything just for info, but Combofix won't get past the opening autoscan screen. I tried letting it run for two hours, but no scanning takes place.
Any hope other than complete system restore and loss of owner's data?

Answer:Boots only in safe mode, windows installer fails, IE fails

Sounds to me as if a clean install is a good idea...after moving valued data files to safety.
I would move files simply by connecting the drive as a slave to a different system...and moving the files considered valuable.
When friends bring me their infected systems, that's usually the quickest/surest method that I use to ensure that they have a working system that is free of malware.

Hello more knowledgeable person than myself. I've been having trouble trying to get my computer to boot; I'd noticed a drop in performance (still unsure why) so decided to boot up in safe mode and poke around - it was not my original intention to install Advanced SystemCare 5.3.0 but somehow it happened. I ran the 'deep-care' utility and everything was working fine, my computer rebooted and performed a disk check: there weren't any errors that I can remember apart from [something along the lines of] 60 reparse files. Following this my computer restarted and Windows failed to load, restarting to show my startup repair - this isn't the first time this has happened, a similar thing occurred following previous attempts at boosting speed, though before I was able to get Windows up and running using an Ubuntu installation disk, although I still don't understand why - no need to say that it didn't work this time.
Startup repair refuses to work and my system restore points have vanished; I would try doing a repair install if I had a copy of the disk. Greetings fellow Windows enthusiasts,

I was asked to update our Windows 2008 R2 server from IE 10 to IE11, and it will not install properly.  I have looked up several solutions to this issue, so far nothing has worked.

I disabled McAfee HBSS in safe mode, restarted the PC and tried to run Windows Update managed by a WSUS server.  The update gets approved and pushed out to the 2008 R2 server.  It downloads IE11, tries to install, then fails/errors-out at the last
second.   I have tried this a few times, rebooted and either get error code 9C47 or 9C49.

Some of the fixes I have tried:

I turned of internet connectivity and the anti-virus, that did not workI tried the Windows Update repair tool, that did not work  I tried the Windows System Readiness tool, that did not work   I tried to scan the system files for errors with sfc /scannow
and that did not work  I tried installing the other updates first, restarting and it still fails I removed the server from WSUS and re-added it and it will not update   I tried the stand-alone IE11 installer, and it fails at the very last step and then gives me an error with a link to troubleshoot IE installations   I have uninstalled IE10, and now am totally stuck with the absolutely horrible experience of IE9 SURT returns no errorsSFC returns no errors

I have checked the Windows Update log file, the last errors that I found ... Read more

I have been trying to install SP1 on a Dell Studio desktop running Windows 7 Home Premium for 3 weeks unsuccessfully.  I have run the Surcheck and the sfc /scannow both several times and neither find any errors.  I removed the Software update log and ran several updates afterwards but SP1 update always fails.  I keep getting the same error code ending in 818.  I will attach snapshot of the error message.

This error code usually means that you do not have enough permission to install updates.  Are you using an administrative account?
If you are using an administrative account go to Microsoft Community and follow the instructions there to resolve this issue.  The process may look complicated, but you should be able to do this.  If you need help with any of this let us know.

Hi everyone!

First time poster, long time listener...

I work IT for a moderately-sized business and I just did a clean install on one of the user laptops that isn't in rotation at the moment.

I clean installed Windows 7 Professional, 64-bit. Nothing has been installed on this PC (besides CCleaner, which I ran a few times and then uninstalled). It is currently updated to Service Pack 1.
The computer is an HP ProBook 4525s.

Now, onto the meat of the issue.

I attempted to run the Windows 7 Convenience Roll-up to save time on updates, but I'm having quite a few issues and some catch-22s.

-The .net framework that comes in the roll-up installs fine, no issues.
-The actual updates- "june_rollup", "servicestack" and "wmf5" all pull up the "Windows Standalone Installer" dialogue box, but that's it. Once it reaches that box, it just looks like it's "installing updates" forever. I had it sit overnight last night and when I came into the office today, nothing. Still in the same exact place.

Troubleshooting attempted/Questions answered:

- No AV is on the system. I just did a clean install.
- I am the administrator on the device.
- I attempted to update Internet Explorer (some support articles mentioned that), but I run into the catch-22 of "update it through Windows Update!" (which isn't working, just searches forever) or to run the download straight from Microsoft's site, which then tells me to u... Read more

1. 32GB mSATA boot drive (Only windows core files and programs installed on it)
2. 1TB Toshiba 5400rpm (for Programs and Games)
3. 1TB Toshiba 5400rpm (for Movies, songs etc)

This laptop had Windows 7 installed in it with Intel Rapid Storage technology enabled. Few months ago, I changed the SATA mode to AHCI and installed windows 7 on 32GB mSATA drive. I kept the C drive only for windows and didn't install anything else on it. I created an MKLINK for some folders such as Common Files/Adobe and Appdata/Adobe so that heavy applications won't eat space on the little drive.
It was working fine for about 4-5 months, till one day the Windows 7 simply failed to boot. It was stuck on the Starting Windows screen forever. I searched on the sevenforums website and tried a lot of things such as cleaning the RAM, disabling startup programs and services etc. But it didn't help. neither did sfc /scannow nor windows repair using installation disc.
I could boot in safe mode but not normal mode.

So, I decided to reinstall Win7 from DVD that came with dell.
But the installation was stuck at final step of install after first reboot.
Again i tried several tricks described in forums, like checking for Legacy Boot in BIOS, making sure SATA is in AHCI, unplugging all USB drives as well... Read more

Answer:Windows Fails To Boot, Fails to Install

Your post is quite interesting but too much for me to absorb at one sitting. With that said I will voice a single concern and then ask a follow-up question:

My concern is this:

I changed the SATA mode to AHCI and installed windows 7 on 32GB mSATA drive

Above seems too small for extended growth.

Now, are you trying to do a clean install or reinstall? If that latter, could there be an issue related to the above (eg, not enough room)? I apologize for not try to absorb everything you stated; however, I made it all the way through high school using Cliff's Notes and I never had to read a single book! Guess I'm just lazy...

Hello and thanks for reading. Let me begin by saying I've been trying to figure this problem out for hours and hours now, and every solution I find that looks promising, just leads me in circles.

I'm trying my best to avoid a clean install.

The problem started while playing a game, causing a BSOD. After a restart, I noticed some of my programs just didn't boot up, for example Core Temp. I attempted to manually start Core Temp and received the following error: "The system could not find the environment option that was entered."

That problem lead me here: The system could not find the environment option that was entered. - Microsoft Answers

Which, obviously, did nothing for me. I tried to create a new user, but when I click the link in the control panel to do so, nothing happens.

I then tried to repair my windows installation using my disc, and it said it could not find any problems. After searching some more, I found another solution would be to perform an upgrade to my Windows installation to fix the problems.

I put the disc in, nothing happened so I went to the setup.exe directly and got the same error as above. So I then booted in safe mode, and it loaded. I got excited until it said something like "an error prevented a compliance check from completing"

And just to be very clear, my windows 7 is valid, I'd be more than happy to share an image of my newegg receipt or even my box to get that out of the way, as I've seen a lot of fla... Read more

I would also restore my default program association to solve the SFC problem, which I believe should be associated with .exe file: Default File Type Associations - Restore - Windows 7 Forums. If not the tutorial's author will know for sure.

If not a Repair Install should be able to sort this after getting clean of any infection.

I would also not dread a Clean Reinstall which almost always is better than getting a new PC given the load of crapware and useless utilities larded onto new consumer PC's. I want to use Windows 7 Backup and Restore to backup files to a shared drive on a Mac server. I can browse to the network share from the Windows 7 computer without a problem.

I configured the backup settings and kicked it off. After several hours it stopped and reported that it did not complete successfully. The error code reported is 0x8007054F. No other details are provided.

I can't find anything that tells me exactly what this error means. It seems to be pretty generic. Can anyone help?

Windows 8 Backup has been working fine for 12 months to an external Seagate USB hard drive.I'm now getting a "device not ready" message with error code 0x80070015 and the backup fails within 30 secs of starting. I've checked the drive for errors and there are no problems. I can read /write files to the external drive. There is ample spare space on the external drive to store the backup file. Please advise how to investigate and solve this problem.

Hey guys!

So I will start by saying I am pretty tech savvy, so don't try to dumb it down for me. If I have a question, I will ask!

So, we got a computer into our class (I'm a student at a High School). It is a personal favour. It started with Dell telling me it couldn't locate it's BCD FIles. I did some tracking, and couldn't find the files needed, and they don't have any discs or USB's provided by the OEM. Great. That's a problem.

My second thought was to grab Hiren's BootCD v15.2 to grab anything important off of the drive (It has Linux and MiniXP. Both options failed. Kind of starting to irritate me at this point. I asked the person if anything important was on there, the answer was no, so I went with a full reinstall.

Now, I do have a Dell DIsc, which is authorized for any Dell Computer to install Windows 8. But of a brick wall, but no R/W Disc. Transferred things into an ISO for a USB stick using Rufus. Boot into it, fails. Now I'm really mad. At this point I went into the CMD from "Repair" option in the stick. I cleaned the drive of ALL info, drive letters, everything. I created a new volume to store info, assigned a Drive letter ( C:\ ). The new drive is a RAW data storage type, "converted", got an error, checked and it said it was NTFS. Great, reboot, retry an Install -- fails.

I'm quickly running out of options now. I'm lost to what to do, the issue simulates what happened to my personal machine a number of years ago, but that was ... Read more

Ok, I've been researching solutions for issues with windows 7 backup for weeks now and have had no luck. My VSS service is running fine, and everything was backing up fine til a short while ago, and has been failing since. I have been backing up to a network share on my file server. My roommate has been having the same issue for some time now, however he was attempting to do this with an external hard drive. Same error of 0x8100019. I've tried everything I can think of and I've had no leads thus far. Any pointers on this would be helpful.

Answer:Windows 7 Backup fails, error code 0x8100019

Same problem, it actually backed up the first time I used the program that is on WIN7. Now it gives me the blue screen. I have deleted the file it makes and start over, same thing happens. I have tried to change the drive from basic to dynamic it won't allow me, reason is I have a laptop. But I am more confused since it worked the FIRST time and now it's not allowing me to finish! It's actually frustrating cause I have already lost everything on my hard drive before and really don't want it to happen again. I wish I had the answer but I'm still searching.

im having problems backing up my files in windows 7 . I get the message "VSS" and "SPP" logs and the error code 0x81000019 A shadow copy could not be created. Please check VSS and SPP application event logs for more info
can anyone help

Answer:Windows 7 back up fails - Error code 0x81000019

The logs may give you exact reasons, but you may try these general suggestions.
Run Check Disk first.
See if you have sufficient hard disk space. Run CCleaner or Disk Cleanup Utility. Volume Shadow Copy may not work properly if available space on any drive is less than 40% - I think. So use built-in Disk Management or some freeware Partition Manager to change disk size if you feel.
Run services.msc to open Service manager. Esure that the Volume Shadow Copy service is Started and set on Automatic.
Disable your security software temperorily and see if it helps.

My Windows Updates fails Error Code :WindowsUpdate_80070652

Definition Update for Windows Defender - KB915597 (Definition 1.71.471.0)

Any thoughts ??

Answer:Windows Updates fails Error Code :WindowsUpdate_8007065

Hi shyamsasinran,

This is interesting, for normal updates this code suggests that another install is in progress (I not sure if Windows Defender is the same). This error can also occur if a dll is loaded that it needs to access, or if the downloaded file is corrupt.
Some thoughts
- If the update is already downloaded, try to install it in safe mode.
- Try to download the latest WD definitions and install manually, get them from the Microsoft Malware Protection Center

Good Luck

I received notification that my Windows 10 reservation is now ready. After downloading and preparing to install through Windows Update, I receive a failure notice with error code 80070005. I have done some searching online, but have found sparse information on how to resolve this.

I am currently on Windows 8.1 Pro x64. I have administrative privileges.

For several months, I've had an ongoing issue when I run 'sfc /scannow', corrupt files are found, some of which it cannot be repaired. From the CBS.log file, I found these related to "". I was assured that when Microsoft sent out update for DiagTracking (KB3022345), it causes a false positive for file corruption. Therefore, I never did anything about this, and I haven't experienced any other issues.

Also worth noting is that I currently have my boot SSD partitioned and configured to dual boot Windows 8.1 Pro and Linux. This all works fine, and I've been told this shouldn't be a problem for upgrading to Windows 10.

I would like to do an in-place upgrade to Windows 10, not a clean install, so that I keep all of my software and settings as they are.

Thanks for any help / advice!

Answer:Upgrade from Windows 8.1 to 10 fails with error code 80070005...

Nothing to do about this?

I also want to mention that I have my boot SSD as a GPT disk with an EFI partition. I just use the GRUB2 bootloader. I've read that others have upgraded dual boot systems to Windows 10 without issue. Generally one just needs to edit the Windows entry in GRUB2 so that it states, "Windows 10".

I'd really appreciate any thoughts on how to proceed. Thanks again.

After some years working perfectly well the Windows 7 copy on my Dell 1720 Inspiron has begun failing the periodic validation checks. Re-activation of Windows reports back as successful, but using the MS validation check invariably reports the copy as non-genuine (it is!).

I have ensured the system is virus/malware free using various tools, checked (as far as my knowledge allows) that all drivers are up to date and tried some of the other suggestions I've read on this forum, but the problem persists.

Hello all,

I've been fixing up a laptop for a laptop that has had one problem after another. I'm working with an ASUS G51VX.

It was riddled with spyware and adware. After cleaning it was still pretty slow, found out it had a failing HDD. Replaced the HDD and still slow. I pretty much have it at a tollerable start up time but I cannot get it to complete the last of it updates (see title)

I've run SURT and it installed one hotfix, KB947821. Assuming that fixed it I ran the update again and still failed.

SFC says it found corrupt files and successfully repaired them. Attached is the log (I only zipped CBS.log because the folder itself is 15GB).

I've seen several entries regarding sp1 instalation errors, but none with this one: falat error c0000034 applying update operation
Machine is x64 (intel core i7), with 8gb mem
tried installing sp1 via windows update. there were three patches to install, one of them, sp1
did the two first, before, and then tried sp1.
It failed while rebooting (not remember the code, sorry), but i was able to do a system restore to pre-sp1.
them, got the full SP1 media from msdn, and did install it in offilne mode. Setup looked faster (of course?) and in reboot, this fatal error c0000034 appeared. But this time, no option for system restore.
if i try to enter in safe mode, i get stuck on driver loading (last loaded is classpnp.sys)
if i try to run, as seen in other threads, the sfc tool, i get a "there is a system repair pending which requires a boot to complete..." Of course, reboot just gets me to the 34 error.
As i cannot get to Windows, no InPlace setup is available...
So, i read about DISM could be used as a before-last resourt... How? I'm not sure what this error is, so i'm a bit lost about getting something out of DISM to correct it.
Any help?

Thank you for posting and wanting to help other users, but unfortunately, I had to delete your post. We have found that the steps in this post while allowing you to recover from the non-bootable state, leaves the machine in an unserviceable state, with SP1
partially installed.  There is not a known way to recover a machine from this state at this time, so we recommend that people follow the steps in the KB article which allow you recover the system with Windows SP1 installed successfully. So as not to leave
customers in state which is not serviceable, your post was removed.

Hi just logged into the forum and hope someone can help. I have tried to install this update six times today (07/05/12) after it was flagged as an important update this morning. Looking at my update history it also failed to instal on the 18th October last year but it has not bothered me since and i have not noticed it until now. Of the seven attempts I had the following error codes from earliest to latest : 800B0100, 80246007, 80010108, 8024200D, 8024200D, 8024200D, 8024200D. I have followed advice from MS running KB947821 and FIX IT also disabled my Norton 360 firewalls and auto protect but to no avail. If anyone can help please bear in mind I am not a techie so will need to be told what to do fully. I have read advice on editting the registry but I do not go there! There be dragons!! Also I do not have a DVD with Windows 7 as it was not supplied with my PC and I don't want to restore my computer and lose all my installed software. Any help would be much appreciated. Should I just hide the update and ignore it or will that come back and bite me? Thanks in anticipation.

I'm trying to migrate a robocopy based backup from XP (where it does work) to Windows 7.  The backup job simply copies a directory on the local PC to a network drive on the file server using a batch file which contains the following:
robocopy "C:\projects" "N:\backup" /e /s /r:1 /w:1 /log+:backuplog.txt
The user account it is running under has full access to the network drive (N:).  When I run the batch file directly from the command line it works perfectly.  It also used to work without issue on a Windows XP machine.  UAC is disabled.
Whenever the task runs it fails with the error code 0x10.

Maybe you are running an older version of the display drivers and so you have to uninstall them before you can start the upgrade.

After the successful upgrade you can install the newest display driver version from the Toshiba page.

I have a suite of Windows 7 workstations on which I now cannot do a system image backup, although I used to be able to when I first installed them. The backup target is the D: drive of one of a pair of 2008 R2 Foundation servers (either one). Once I've selected the target server and drive from the "Select a Network Location" dialogue, and entered appropriate credentials there, back on the "Where do you want to save the backup?" dialogue, when I click the "Next" button, I just get a message box "An error has occurred: The parameter is incorrect. (0x80070057). Close Windows Backup and try again". Needless to say, that doesn't help.

I've come across many threads on this and other forums with similar problems, but none of the suggestions I found (like setting the locale to use '.' as the decimal place, increasing the virtual memory to a preposterous size, or running CHKDSK) have helped.

I know malware is not the problem since these workstations and the servers are on a closed network with no external connections at all, and all removable media are disabled.

Answer:Windows System Image Backup Fails to Start (error code 0x80070057)

OK, folks, riddle me this if you can:

I fixed this problem as a by-product of fixing another one, apparently unrelated, which was that I couldn't access the workstation's DVD drive - I just kept getting the dreaded "Access is denied" mantra. In my searching, I came across a suggestion to uninstall the drive and reinstall it. Seems kinda extreme, but it would certainly initialise its security settings.

Well I did it, and sure enough I now have full access to the drive, but then when I opened the Backup toolbox to create a new system repair disk, I found the backup to my system servers is now working, along with correctly identifying the DVD drive and an external USB HDD I have connected as usable backup devices (which it didn't before).

It makes about as much sense to me as getting your TV to work by turning the kitchen tap on, but there you go - that's Windows for you.
