Set file type associations to a specific version of an application

Question: Set file type associations to a specific version of an application

I have several versions of an application (Adobe After Effects) installed (I help test out prerelease versions of the software - which is nice) and I'd like to be able to set the precise application / file type association.

If I get a file's properties and 'Change...' the 'Opens with:' and browse to the exact application I want it to open with (After Effects version 13.6x123), then Apply/OK it, when I open the file, it just loads up the oldest version of the app (After Effects version 13.2) that Windows can find. Is there a better way to set filetype associations than the broken method that Windows is clearly attempting to use?

I have four versions of this app currently installed, all in C:\Program Files\Adobe. 90% of the time, I want to use the latest version, but occasionally need to use an older (public release) version to check how certain bugs/behaviours have changed, so need to keep all those versions installed.

I can use the workaround of opening the specific app and File > opening the file from within it, but it would be nice if I could get Windows to behave properly. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated!

Preferred Solution: Set file type associations to a specific version of an application

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

How can I change file type associations in Windows 8?

For example .jpg files open in Photos app, fine, but when I right-click and choose "edit" Paint opens up. I want to change it from Paint to Photoshop and there seems to be no way to do that.

In Windows 7 I used Creative Elements Power Tools for this, but it is not compatible with Windows 8.

Can anyone help me with this?

Answer:File type associations?

It works the same way that it did in Windows 7.

Right click on the image, choose Open With -> Choose Default Program, choose photoshop, then make sure "Use this app for all x Files" is checked.

Answer:How can i fix ppt and pptx file type Associations?

Hello Fircxo, and welcome to Seven Forums.

You should be able to right click on a .ppt and .pptx file, click on Open with, select Choose default program, then select Microsoft Powerpoint. The tutorial below will help show you how to, but you do need to already have a program like Microsoft Office or Powerpoint installed to be able to open .ppt and .pptx files with.

Open With - Change Default Program

I've already tried several things here.

Default programs> Set your default programs > (Program name goes here) > Choose defaults for this program.

Even though Firefox is already registered with file types such as: .html, .htm, .ftp, etc, it won't let me uncheck them as well as for other programs.

I don't want to change the Firefox associations, though.

I've also tried

Default programs > Associate a file type or protocol with a program

To no avail either.

FileTypesMan didn't help much of either.

It appears third party software and the usual method, aka Default programs, can no longer change some file type associations so easily now.

Any help here?

"assoc" and "ftype" in a command prompt will show you a lot of info.

Find the association and then use the default editor to change things.

Hi, I've upgraded to Windows 10 at launch, but I've only recent ran into this problem:Before, I could change file association for any file type by either going into properties for the file and choose "change" in the "open with" section, or change it in the control panel/default programs/set associations. But recently, that completely ceased to function. When I open properties and click "change", nothing happens. The pop up that's supposed to appear to allow me to choose a program doesn't appear.Same thing happens when I click "change program" in the control panel/default programs screen.Without these, I cannot open certain types of files because they somehow won't open with the currently associated programs when I double click them. Please help...this essentially crippled my PC...

Have you tried right clicking the file, choosing "Open with" and then selecting the appropriate program from the list or by browsing to it's exe file?Always pop back and let us know the outcome - thanks

Ever since I've updated to the most recent version of windows all the Video files will no longer asscociate to the various file types withing the Zoom icon library. It seems just to asscociate all to one particular Icon which is the main Zoom player Icon.

I've done a sfc/scannow to repair any problems and I've used a little app that is supposed to specifically associate ZP types.

Answer:Zoom Player File type associations

Hi, I 'll guess what's happening is this:
Perhaps in (say) win 7, if you set the associations from with Zoom player, icons were set appropriately.

From Win 8 on, associations cannot be set by programs- they can only register themselves as capable of handling the file types they do.

When you set the association from Settings or the Control panel or Open With, you are setting that association with the main executable.

If you wished, you could achieve this by hand, or by writing an appropriate script, I would think. But is it worth the time?

If I associate a file type with a program, the association works fine until I restart Windows. Strangely, some associations work while others don't. For instance:

.pdf works
.html/.htm works
.iso works
Proprietary types like .mmip (MediaMonkey) work
(Although I have not tried changing these associations)

Nothing else works. Video, audio, picture, text, compression, all revert to default after Windows restarts. File associations were working fine before I reinstalled Windows 2 or 3 weeks ago.

Running Windows 7 Home Premium SP1 (x64) on a Lenovo Z580.

Any thoughts?

Should probably mention that I've tried using both Default Programs and the associated program itself to set the association, and while both work, both revert back to the default setting (unassociated, or associated to the wrong program) after Windows restarts.

I'm trying to add a couple of file extensions in Tools->Folder Options->File Types, but they keep disappearing. I clicked New, typed "m4a", and it came up, but none of the settings I enter (icon, file type description) have any effect. If I type in "AAC File" and and choose an icon, then click OK, nothing happens. The description in the File Types column remains as "M4A File" and the icon remains as the default WMP icon. If I close the window and open it again, I can't even find M4A in the list and have to add it again.

I can get it to remember to open with a certain program by opening the properties page of an M4A File, but that's all.

Okay here's the thing. I got a nag screen on my nero showtime that said my right to used the program had expired. and that it was no longer supported. And While I REALLY don't wanna, it looks like I am going to have to move from XP pro, to VISTA X64 when I get my new computer. Because my beloved Nero 6 won't work on Vista I'm stuck with upgrading.

this brings me to Nero 9. and the trouble I am having.

Not only is Nero 9 bloated, but it hijacks all of my system's file associations, even when I change them back, they still show the nero file type. an example would be that a .mp3 becomes Neromp3 (or some junk) Icon's change, and i can't find a way to revert them.

I have tried not installing things, but unlike previous versions, I have not come across any screen that will allow me to select what file types I'd like to change. and what i want to stay the same.

sometimes i can change the icons, but the file type remains the same... it i frustrating. and when nero auto updates ( even after i turn the auto update off) everything goes back to nero's default

is there a way to correct this? I have run out of ideas..

Answer:Restore File Type Associations After Nero Install

If you right click an mp3 file then choose Open With > Choose Default Program and choose Windows Media Player and tick the Always use selected program to open this kind of file and click Ok the file association should be back to WMP and the default mp3 icon

Do this with other files that have changed association.

Hi, my computer has suddenly picked up a nasty problem and can open ALMOST NO programs; Windows seems to have lost all file type associations. I have no idea what to do and would be really grateful if someone could take a look at my problem.

This began today after 'Windows Vista Antivirus' or similar popped up saying, through a whole variety of error messages, that several viruses and threats had been detected on my computer. I had never noticed this program before (I use AVG antivirus) and could not close it or use it to remove said dangerous files without subscribing online for $x and I suspected that this in itself was a virus. I ran AVG antivirus, which picked up nothing on my computer. I then ran 'Malwarebytes' Antimalware' which found several threats. After I rebooted my computer to remove the threats, my real problems began...

I get a variety of error messages when I try to open programs. For example, when trying to open iTunes, I get "Application not found" and with MSWord, "This file does not have a program associated with it for performing this action. Create an association in the Set Associations control panel."

When I try to load Internet Explorer, I am propted with an "open with" window which has an Internet Explorer option as recommended (but which fails to work). Beneath, there is an option to "look for the appropriate program on the Web" and clicking here loads up a working IE window, so I know that my c... Read more

This problem has just started on several machines since 8/20/2016. On Windows 10 Pro computers, the program associated with a file type extension will not launch correctly anymore even though the correct program is listed as associated with that file type.

I have seen two versions of this issue. On one machine, double clicking on a file in Windows Explorer with a .xls extension would open Excel but the worksheet would be blank. If you open Excel first and then load the file from within Excel, it opens fine.

On another computer, double clicking on a file with an assigned file extension results in nothing happening.

I have been able to solve this problem by going to the "Control Panel" --> "Default Programs" --> "Associate a file type or protocol with a program" selecting the file extension I need to work, click "Change Program..." and select the same program that was already listed as the "Current Default".

Obviously, the program listed as the current default is no longer associated with the extension in the registry.

The next time I see this behavior, I will check the registry entries before I apply my "fix".

I just wanted to know if others are seeing this issue and what is causing it.

Answer:File type associations not launching the program in the list

You could try repairing the MS Office installation if the problem is limited to Office files. Go to Control Panel\All Control Panel Items\Programs and Features, right click MS Office, select Change then Repair.

If the problem is more general, try running sfc /scannow from an admin command prompt. The next fix would then be do an in-place repair install of Windows 10.

I recently upgraded/updated Windows 10 Home with the Nov/Dec 2015 update version ?1511?.

File associations for Web Browser and Music have always been Firefox and VLC
Player respectively, i.e. .htm files open in Firefox and .mp3 files open in VLC.

However, since the update version ?1511?, every time I zip an mp3 file with WinZip, the file associations for Web Browser get removed and local .htm web pages get associated with Microsoft Edge, and mp3 files get associated with Groove. I then have to manually reset files back to Firefox and VLC through Settings / System / Default Apps and/or use Open With / always use this app to open this type of file.

Similarly, if I zip an .htm file with Winzip, then .htm files get changed from being associated with Firefox and become associated with Microsoft Edge [but mp3 files do not lose their association with VLC in this instance].

This behaviour did not occur before the major update version ?1511?.

Is anyone aware of what is happening here? Thanks.

Answer:htm & mp3 file associations change since latest update version “1511”

I would say do not use WinZip. There are other options.

Hi there!

I used many different file types each day, specially those related to image editors. I have many .psd and .ai files (documents for Adobe Photoshop and Illustrator). However, since I use other programs (GIMP and Inkscape), these files look pretty ugly. They are a white sheet of paper with low resolution GIMP/Inkscape logo. And that is awful

I think I did something with W7 like messing up with regedit in order to change that. I just want W10 to show those files with a proper icon file (.ico) I have in my computer.

Thank you very much!

Hello all, today a user posed an interesting question to me:
"If this is a library, how do I set it to gather only a specific type of file?"
I thought this was a great question, so I hopped right on it.  When you make a new library, you are able to set which type of file it is optomized for, but I see no option to filter based on this.  In her case, she wanted to make a library of only
her Excel files, which could be stored in a variety of places.
At first, I Bing'd and found this link, also on the Technet Forums (Export Folder list from a Library), but ultimately found
nothing too useful there.  I eventually consulted the XML Schemas directory on the Microsoft site, and came across the

XML Schemas breakdown of the Library File type.  This too had some interesting stuff, but nothing that I was looking for.
My question is this, through registry entry, notepad file hacking or other cleverness, how does a user set a library to only have certain types of files in it?  For instance, one might want only .xlsx or .iso files in a particular folder. Currently,
adding a path will cause your library to populate with files of every type.  It is very hard to duplicate the built-in functionality of the default Pictures, Music and Video libraries.

Answer:Use libraries to gather only a specific type of file?

As far as I know, the library just can bring your stuff together in one place. However, it cannot specific a certain types of files. If you include a folder to library, it will show all files in this
However, you can achieve the task by copying all this type of files to one folder manually. To search doc files, type "kind:docs" without quotation in the Windows Explorer search box.
For more information about library, please refer:

Well.. wrong app.. didn't work so I browsed for a new app that suites much better.
Now I have the problem hat Windows Mobile 10 seems to have registered the first app I downloaded as default app for the file type (.txt).
How the heck do I change this?
Uninstalling works. But.. hey.. that can't be the solution.
So the question is: Where do I edit the file associations in Windows 10 Mobile?

I want to prevent certain extensions/file types from appearing in the "recent items" list in Windows 7 64-bit professional.

I do NOT want to disable Recent items completely.

I do however want to exclude certain file types such as movies (I have playlists for that), and photos from the list.

I normally use a limited/standard account for my daily use, especially when watching movie files or looking at .JPGs. Lately .MP4 files are appearing in my recent items list again. I want to stop that.

Searching on this issue has yielded a suggestion of a program called "FileTypesMan"

However, while the .mp4 file type already has the checkbox to "don't add this type to "recent documents"" already checked, it does NOT work on my limited account, as they still appear in my "Recent Items" menu.

I solved this problem years ago, but I can't find the bookmark to how to fix it.

I think FileTypeMan fixes things for whatever user is currently using it, but it prompts for UAC elevation when you launch it, so I have to run it as an admin, not as my limited user account. How do I exclude .MP4 files from the "Recent Items" list in my limited account?

The only other thing I can find is this, which talks about an "editflags" entry that I cannot locate with RegEdit when logged in as an admin. Yet I already have some things excluded from my recent items, so how was that done? Read more

I downloaded an upgrade to DxO Pro Optics. The old one, v6, was buggy so I upgraded to v7.1, which is in the v7 folder.

I can't associate my raw Canon files to DxO v7.1, probably because in regedit it says:

HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\Applications\DxOOpticsPro.exe\shell\open\command it reads, under Data: "C\Program FIles(x86)\DxO Optics Pro v6\DxOOpticsPro.exe" ""1" [the extra quotation mark should be a percentage symbol (ie before the numeral one]

I thought I could change the v6 to v7 but I'm not allowed to.

I just open and close these things because I only know enough to ruin my computer.

Please help?

Answer:Unable to associate file type to upgraded version of a program

Hello pxfragonard,

Does the DxO v7.1 version have a separate folder of it's own in Program Files (x86) or Program Files instead of in the original DxO Optics Pro v6 folder? If so, you could use Open With to select the .exe file for the DxO v7.1 version to associate to the file type.

Are you able to install the DxO v7.1 version separately instead of upgrading from the older version? If so, you could uninstall them, then install the new version to be able to.

Hope this helps for now,

Answer:The application-specific permission settings do not grant Local Activation permission for the COM Server application with CLSID

Hi Ewa,
It's just a example instead of your real ID.
The ID of yours {316CDED5-E4AE-4B15-9113-7055D84DCC97} must be in that list. Have you attempt to find it?
I have search it on my lab computer(Windows 8.1)as below:

Hello all!
So I work tech support at my company and recently had one of our secretaries run into a virus. It was an email containing a fake resume in .doc format that once opened, attempted to direct the computer to download a trojan. AVG detected it right off the bat and quarantined it. I then ran a full system scan with AVG, Malwarebytes, and Spybot and everything came back clean.  I had assumed AVG along with Word being macro-disabled by default kept anything from actually happening.
However, at the time of the download she was running our company bookkeeping software (eClub for those interested) and it crashed once she tried to use it again. I check it out and see that the .exe to run eClub had been removed from the eClub folder (let's call it eclub.exe). Weird! So I go ahead and completely uninstall the program and reinstall, only to find eclub.exe was not reinstalled with it. I copy eclub.exe from another computer and try to paste it into the folder, and I'm told I don't have permission to do so. Then things get weird:
1. I uninstalled eClub completely again, removed the eClub folder and every possible saved setting for it.
2. I created a blank eClub folder (ex. C:\Program Files\eClub)
3. I can put anything I want into this folder, including .exes, EXCEPT for eclub.exe, getting the insufficient permission error.
4. I can put eclub.exe in subfolders of C:\Program Files\eClub without a problem
I checked all my permission levels and have fu... Read more

Hello,Few days ago I run Lenovo software update utility. There was an update available for the dolby audio driver and I applied it. Since then every time I reboot the computer the dolby audio application fails to start (it is in the start up). The message displayed is "The current Dolby audio driver version is 7.2.8000.14 and the software application expects driver version 7.2.7000.7. Please install a valid driver and software application combination." There is no available download for the application in the support section of Lenovo's website. This problem caused some applications to stop working (e.g. Spotify reports an error with the sound card and fails to play music). Please, advice. Thank you.

I use several different word processors, two of which are Atlantis and Jarte. Both create (mostly) .rtf files. My favorite kind.
On my XP computer, Atlantis and Jarte (and every other word processor I've ever used) show their own icons in Explorer. If I use Atlantis to create an .rtf file, that file shows Atlantis' icon, and every file I create in Jarte shows Jarte's icon.
On my Win7 machine, that is not happening. I get an icon that Windows believes is the default .rtf file and that's all. Is there some way I can change that behavior to the XP way of displaying icons?
Yes, I did change the default .rtf application hoping that would fix the "problem", but it did not. It only changed the default icons to the app I chose as the default. I would very much like to know, at a glance,  which wordprocessor created a specific file.
If you can help, I thank you very much. If not, thanks anyway.

Answer:File Type Icons vs Application Icons

Unfortunately, that will not happen within Windows 7.  One work-around is to have, under a master rtf folder, an rtf folder for X program and an rtf folder for program Y, with programs X & Y preset to save everything in their assigned directories.

We are pleased to release File Association Fixer for Windows 7 & Vista.
If you find that you are unable to open particular files, identify the type of file and use Fix File Association to fix file type associations easily, with a click!
File Association Fixer detects whether you have Windows 7 or Windows Vista installed and accordingly offers you the relevant fixes only.
We always recommend that you create one before making any changes to your system.
File Association Fixer has been developed for The Windows Club by Ritesh Kawadkar, based on the inputs from my MVP colleague Ramesh Srinivisan.

Answer:Feedback: Fix File Associations in Windows 7 & Vista with File Association Fixer

When I try to `open` File Association Fixer on Windows 7 using Internet Explorer 8 - the page tries to `open` at the rate of approx. 2 pages per second [guesstimate] - unsuccessfully - I then have to FORCE a shutdown to stop this - or it would continue - NON STOP!
I have exactly the same problem trying to `open` FixWin - another Windows Club recommendation.
I Scan and run `checks` on my Computer on a very regular basis - nothing has shown to be running incorrectly.
Although I am inexperienced in `Computing` - I am only trying to `Select` and `Open`an item - I am sure that I am not doing anything wrong.
I mention my inexperience because I need any suggestions to be worded as simply as possible please - I have only approx. 6 Months experience on a Computer and late in life.
Is it possible that I am having problems because these items are `Zip Files`- I have not had any problems with any other type of File or Program.
I would really appreciate help with this - in as simple terms as possible please.
"Thanks", CHRISMUR.

Hey all, I was hoping someone on this board would be able to help me out.

I'm looking for a PC keyboard(PS/2 or USB) that would be like a laptop keyboard, where the keys are very easily pressed and sensitive. If anyone here has one of those or knows of a company that manufactures that type of keyboard please toss me a link or in the right direction.

Thanks all.

A program that lets me change the colors displayed on my monitor. The NVIDIA control panel does a thing like this, but it gives you only 3 channels: red, blue, and green. I am looking for a much more extensive program, that would let me change a whole array of colors on my monitor in different ways such as brightness and contrast.

Does anyone know of such a program, I cannot find one.

Answer:Looking for a specific type of program.

The three channels, RGB you see in the NVIDIA controls are capable of making any color, hue, brightness and contrast.

You could take a look at the color setting built into W7. In the search box enter Color Management and click on Change advanced color... and follow the wizard.

I was just given a laptop (IBM Thinkpad 390X - 400Mhz, 128 SDRAM Win XP) and would like to set up a wireless network in my home with my PC. Is there a specific network card I need to get for the laptop since it is pretty old?

And another similar question:

I work in a state building as Security and we are allowed to get on our laptops while we are on duty. I have been told by other employees that you need a certain type of wireless card to access the internet wirelessly because of their firewall. Can someone explain this to me in further detail what could be going on?

Answer:Do I need a specific type of card?

No, you can use any wireless card. I actually use 2 different kinds on my home network.

If you are working for the state, and can get your own laptop on their network, you should first of all make sure that you have the latest anti-spyware and anti-virus software on your computer, and make sure you keep it updated! You don't need a specific card to connect to the wireless access point, but you may need to enable a specific type of encryption, such as WEP or WPA (hopefully a minimum of WPA).

Great forum guys!!

I'm looking for a specific type of program. I don't know what it is called, so I can't just google it. I need to be able to look at a company's website and extract select types of information from their webpages. For instance. I would like to be able to search an law firm's website and pull out all the names, phone numbers, email addresses, and certain types of other data for their attorneys based on a single page template.

I've looked at data / web / text mining software, but the complexity is disheartening and I'm not even sure that's what I need. Even if that's what I need, I don't want to get a program that is overengineered for my purpose. I don't need data analysis, I just need a listing of certain types of data. Something to look at the source code for each page and extract only the data that I want.

Does anyone have a program suggestion? I'd like to be able to output it to a database or a spreadsheet right from the program if possible.

Thanks so much guys!!!!!!

One of the few models that´s close to his description is the Surface Book Performance Base, which cost a lot more.

I have a database w/ 147 names of research studies in it. I need to find out if the data for these studies has ever been published, and I had a list of about 40 archive websites that publish this type of data. Each site has a search button, so I could copy and paste the name of each study in the search field for each site -- but that's about 6000 individual searches!

Ideally, I'd like a program where it would interface w/ one of the sites, check each name in the database, and provide me w/ a logfile of what it found for each study. Then I could repeat this process w/ each of the 40 sites.

Alternatively, maybe I could find a program where I could give it a list of URLs I need to search, and then paste in each study. And again, it would give me a logfile of what it finds at each site.

Keep in mind these sites are generally maintained by colleges -- they're not major search engines like Google, Yahoo, etc. I found a lot of programs that will automatically connect to like 10 different search engines, but that won't help me unless I can specify which sites to connect to. This is about the closest thing I found:

But it's not exactly what I want and it's expensive.

I have been looking everywhere, and keep getting information that leads me to places in the registery that does not work.  I basically need to create a clickable file (.bat, .reg whatever) that will change the file associations to an installed program.  I basically need to set the file associations for image files to ifranview.  Although I know ifranview can do this from within the program, asking my customers to go through the menus is (as I am sure those of you that help friends/customers over the phone) is a very tedious task.  Sending them a bat or reg file that will do the trick is the only feasible way I can think of to do it.  I work best with examples, so if someone would give me an example with one file extension type (jpg for example) it will be a great help.
Thanks in advance.

Before removing a USB stick I always eject it, properly.  Doing so, I discovered a difference between the Windows 7 built in USB 2 driver and the Lenovo USB 3.0 drivers. Before ejecting from built-in USB 2 port - USB stick is properly identified"Eject U3 Cruzer Micro" Before ejecting from W510 USB 3 port - USB stick is identified generically"Eject USB Mass Storage Device" That seems to be the only bad news, albeit a seemingly minor difference.  The good news is that the USB 3 ports with Lenovo USB 3 drivers seem far more reliable, so far, in turning off power to the device when it is ejected.  The USB 2 ports and built-in Windows 7 driver often leave power to the device. Is anyone else seeing similar differences?

Answer:USB 3.0 driver does not report specific device type

I have much worse problem with USB 3.0 ports. It seems like there are not real superspeed USB 3.0 ports on W510!As I connect USB 3.0 device it install properly but then I receive "USB 3.0 port has limited speed" error and device stop working (on my desktop computer with X58 chipset it works fine). After some investigation it seems like the only USBs 3.0 connected thru north bridge on X58 chipsets are real superspeed USBs. On the QM57 chipset that W510 has it is not.I contacted Lenovo tech support with this problem, but no help at all. Also no replay from moderators here after 3x posting this problem.

I work for a company that uses laptops for testing. I have to setup around 10 at time usually. I am trying to come up with an effective way to scan these computers for viruses when they return to the office. The catch is I have to find something that doesn't install any software on the machine. What would honestly be perfect for me would be something that works like McAfee free scan. The computers have an internet connection while I configure them so if I had something like that running on one of our webservers, or it's own dedicated server so the server would update with definitions as they were available. The free scan installs an Active X control which is perfectly fine. I just can't install Norton or AVG or anything like that. Does anyone know of anything like that?

Answer:Searching for a specific Type of Anti-Virus

Portable Antivirus: most of them don't scan for all viruses. Clamwin scan for all viruses but it is considered not good antivirus.

On my computer some application works with one internet connection ( ISP ) and some through other internet connection ( ISP )

This problem has started since last few days.*

I flush dns and did most common solutions found on net like changing TCP/IP but nothing worked.

Is there any way to get rid off from this error ?

Or is there any way we can combine BOTH wireless internet connection in one PC and make some settings that which application works with which internet connection ( ISP )

I have 2 wireless internet dongles and I have 2 dongles which I can attach to my PC to connect to this internet dongles.

I read about Bridge connection and i did it but this didn't solved the error. May be because I am not able to make settings which application uses which internet connection

PLEASE NOTE, I am not having problem in browsing website. I am having PROBLEM in installed application, like stock market trading software.

I have been trying to diagnose a particular problem where applications freeze for a split 2-3 seconds at random intervals. I really hope that someone might be able to provide some suggestions as I am starting to pull my hair out with this.

For example, I could be running the following programs:
Google Chrome
VLC Movie Player
Playng TERA Online.

While playing Tera (current active program) and watching a movie on VLC. VLC will freeze for a few seconds (at random) and then continue, while the game I'm playing does not freeze at all.

Another scenario:
Mozilla Firefox
Quicktime Player
MS Office - Excel
While reading a webpage in Firefox (current active program) and listening to music with quicktime, as I scroll through the webpage the browser will freeze and become unresponsive for 2-3 seconds. Meanwhile the music playing in Quicktime has not missed a single beat.

List of attempted fixes:Checked Event Viewer(Applications) for errors, none found.
Adjusted Virtual Memory/Paging file from 8162MB to an Initial size of 16324/Max 32648
Ran stress test (passmark) To check if I could isolate the freezing during certain tests. (Did not lock up at all after running 5 tests)
Used Windows Error checking (CHKDSK) on physical drive to check for errors (none found in Event Viewer)

I play RTS (real time strategy) games like Starcraft, Starcraft 2, Warcraft 3, etc. Also, I play FPS (First Person Shooter) games like Call of Duty 4 MW2, Bad Company 2, etc..

I've seen the discussions, and the ads about gaming mouses vs non-gaming mouses, and I think it's all a big hype. My question is, aren't all wireless/laser mouses the same? if I want to have better precision with a mouse when playing a first person shooter online in multiplayer mode, for example, do i really need that latest $100 gaming mouse (wireless or laser), or will the $15 mouse (wireless or laser) do the same exact thing?

Thank you in advance!

Lots of the gaming mice have some extra configuration settings that you can set your way to make things easier and faster for you.

I associated media files to Winamp. Now when I view them in a folder they are listed as "winamp media files" instead of "mp3 audio files" or whatever they used to be. This is annoying because I arrange files by type and all the media files are sorted as winamp media files, even though they may be .mp3 or .ogg or .wav. How do I make it so that files are still associated with winamp but their file type is properly shown instead of just "winamp media file"?

Answer:Need better file associations

Question: File Associations

Vista x64.

I goofed and associated .THM files with photoshop.
Originally .THM files had nothing associated with them, like system file that has the icon that looks like a piece of paper with one corner folded over.

How do I associate .THM files with nothing? Like it was before.

Answer:File Associations

(Sorry if this may seem condescending, I don't mean it that way. I just don't know how technical you are. I am used to dealing with users that pretty much know nothing.)

Open Control Panel

In the new view:
Click Programs
Click the link next to Default Programs that says "Make a file type always open in a specific program"
Scroll down to find the extension to change
Double click the extension
In the box that pops up, click the plus near the far right side
select the program you want to use to open the file

In the Classic view of Control Panel:
Double Click the Default Programs icon
Click the link that says "Associate a file type..."
Scroll down to find the extension to change
Double click the extension
In the box that pops up, click the plus near the far right side
select the program you want to use to open the file

I want my Windows XP SP2 to not know what program to open them with. How can I make Windows not know what program to open my .cue files with?

Answer:File Associations

My Dell laptop has become virtually unusable. On Monday a pop up came up called Antivirus 2010 (av.exe). It looks just like the a Vista tool. I exited out of the program and ran my McAfee. McAfee detected nothing. I tried to search for the program can could not find it. I thought all was well. Tuesday I went to use my computer and it came back. I executed Taskmgr and found this av.exe on running. I right clicked in Taskmgr to goto where the program was it was in Users\michael\App Data. I renamed the file. Shutdown Vista and restarted in Safe Mode Command Prompt. I removed the file. I restarted Vista and then things got worse. Now none of my programs run as all associations are gone. In order for me to execute IE I have to right click and run as administrator, however this does not work for everything (like turning off screen saver).

I have followed the directions for files and have them attached, however GMER.EXE failed to run to completion twice it gave me the Blue Screen of Death, so I have attached the initial scan when you open the program. I am going to attempt to run GMER again.

Finally I have Windows Vista Ultimate with the CD of the OS provided by Dell.

Thank you in advance for all your help.

Question: file associations

I have installed Microsoft Picture it Publisher and now all my pictures that I have saved are using this program to view them. I am trying to keep them in the browser but can't figure out how. When I look at a picture that I have saved and want to print it I want to use the internet explorer browser. Can anyone help me with this? It's a huge program and takes forever to load. All I want to do is open a jpg file and print the picture. I've tried the settings tab and folder options to change the program that it uses to open the jpg file but it always uses MS Picture it.

Answer:file associations

Graphics programs stealing the file associations is quite common.
Here is the way to reassociate with Internet Explorer or other Graphis programs.

Step 1- Locate the images that you are having trouble opening.
Step 2- If you have a Graphics program that you prefer using then that is the one which will be used in the next steps, if you do not then we will use Internet Explorer.
Step 3- Left click to highlight image file
Step 4- Right click highlighted Image while holding down the shift key and select the "open with" option
Step 5- Once the open with selection box appears scroll down to your preferred graphic program or to Internet Explorer
Step 6- Highlight your preferred program or Internet Explorer
Step 7- Click the always use this box
Step 8-Click OK
Repeat process for all your file types, jpeg, gif, tif, bmp and so on.

Hope that helps

Question: File Associations

Hi All

I cant get my mp3 files to open with thier default prog (WMP). When I click on the file it gives me an error message saying that it does not have a program associated with it and to create one. Well, Im not new to this simple task and when I go through the motions, (In Windows Explorer: Tools/ Folder Options/ File Types/ Highlight MP3;Shows that the file is already set to open and play with WMP;I select Advanced anyway, highlight open and click OK
;Like always, the files in explorer flicker once as to acknowledge the file association;I then click on my favorite MP3 and get the same error message;Yes I restarted my computer)
it just keeps giving me the same message.

Other files open fine with thier default program just fine. Its a new computer if that matters.

Answer:File Associations

Try from the other end of the horse. :)

Open WMP, Tools, Options, Formats, and choose the formats you want WMP to play.

Question: File Associations

Hello All

A few of my files have been changed to the VLC icon, is there a Utility to correct this kind of thing?
Regards SilverSurf

Answer:File Associations

Hello SilverSurf,

Set Default Programs

Click Start.
Click Control Panel.
Click Default Programs.
Click Set Default Programs.
Choose what program(s) you want to set as default for all files and protocols it can open.

For what it's worth, I love VLC. It is much more compatible than just about any other media player out there, and also has some abilities to rebuild corrupted files.

Question: File Associations

First problem is I'm a real dummy. Getting the following while trying to open a .gif attachment: "file does not have a program associated with it for this action. To create one, double click MC on desktop. On View Menu-click options then file types. Also-when trying to open a .jpg, getting a message as follows: Error in opening document. File does not begin with '%PDF-'. I used to be able to open both of these file/attachment types but something has gone wrong. Please help a dummy. Thanks.

Answer:File Associations

Try this. Locate a .gif file in Windows Explorer. Now while holding the shift key down right click on it and select 'Open With' on the menu. When the screen pops up scroll down and click once on Iexplore or Explorer (doesn't matter) to highlight it and then place a check in the little box where it says "always use this program etc..." and then click ok. Your .gif's should now open in a browser window. Do the same for .jpg files and then you should be able to open them into a browser window also.

Question: File Associations

At the forefront, please accept my deepest apology for this post as it pertains to many other posts with same subject:

this file does not have a program associated . . . in the Set Associations control panel.

Background: HP Pavilion 9000 running VISTA. On 1 Apr (I was the April fool), I acquired a virus (antivirus Vista). I immediately panicked and starting reading/doing to fix. I ran a 'full' McAfee virus scan. During this time of panic, I also did a systems restore. At the end of all this, my email worked along with a few executables and it appears that McAfee quarantined the virus. THIS I AM NOT SURE OF. I tried 'set associations' to no avail (could not find anything to associate) for practically everything without any positive results and most likely did not really know what I was doing. Practically everything is practically everything.

I have Googled 'this file' and began reading the posts; however, nothing seems to work.

Basically, I am elated to have what I have; but, really need all programs to work - primarily my ErrorFix, McAfee and Antimalware and some church files.

QUESTIONS: Our site advertises fixing Vista in 2 minutes - will that help?
Am I still infected with remnants?

Again, I apologize for repetition and ask your indulgence. Much thanks in advance.

Question: File Associations

It appears Windows Vista and 7 have eliminated the much desired "View Files" tab on Folder Options. I recently had need to set a file association for a pdf reader I installed on a friends computer (Win7 Pro 64-bit) and could not do so.

Did a bit of research this evening and ran across THIS utility. Anyone used it or have other recommendations for doing this heretofore simple task?

This is prior to my cd-rom problem. I tried deleting a registry value [HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\exefile\shell\open\command]
@="\"%1\" %*"

I doubt though this was only part of other changes I did.

When I did this, I restarted my computer and when I opened firefox, the program wouldnt open. The error said something about file extentsion does not exist, attach an association in the folder options of control panel. This problem applies to almost all programs on my computer. I had to change exe and insert in firefox in order to open it and I post this problem.. I was dumb enough and newbish not to create a system restore before fiddling with the registry. Is there any way to fix the problem?

Question: File associations

In the last few weeks, whenever I try to play a WMV file attached to an email, I get a message telling me "This file does not have a program associated with it for performing this action. Create an association in the Folder Options control panel.", but of the several programs capable of opening this type of file I already have, I have associated VLC Media Player to open it (and I have double-checked that this is still so in Folder Options, and it is). When I save the WMV file to disk, I can play it without problem. I can effortlessly open other types of file (doc, pdf etc) when they are attached to an email without having to save them first. Any ideas?

Answer:File associations

Click start>ctrl panel. Open the Folder Options Icon. In the tabbed menue that appears select File Types.
This generates an alphabetical list of all of the file types used by the software on your machine. Pictures use file types, jpg, gif and bmp.
Scroll down to the file extension you have a problem with and click it. Just below the list, you will see an entry showing "Details for the extension. "Alongside that entry is a change button. Click it,and you"ll get a list of possible programs that can be used to open the file type.
Just have to find the program that will open your extension you are having a problem with

My friend was messing around on my laptop and when I got it back everything was changed to iTunes. Although it says google chrome it shows an iTunes logo and will launch iTunes if clicked. This happened about six months ago. I tried for months to get it fixed but I ended up uninstalling iTunes so they would go back to normal. However if I want to update my music I need to instal iTunes and go through the proccess of it takin over. I'm in desperate need of help! Any advice is better than no advice at all. If you need a screenshot let me know.

Answer:File associations help!

Have you tried re-installing Itunes? Does it "take over" the same file associations as before? If all it did wrong was take over as the default browser, did you try going into google chromes settings and choosing to set it as the default browser?

To better explain, is there a way to be able to use programs to set their own file associations again rather than the idiotic Default Programs in Control Panel or the Open With dialogue?

Windows 8 has, so far, sucked big time and has far fewer good features than Windows 7, and this is a core problem for me. Windows will not "see" file types it doesn't recognize such as PSF, SPC, 2SF, etc. which are all sound formats for video game sequencing music, by Neil Corlett. Previously, it's as easy as opening Winamp and setting file associations. Unfortunately, it doesn't work now in the default Windows 8, and I can't find a way to change this really horrible "feature". When I try "Open With", Winamp isn't on the list of programs to pick from. On Default Associations, the file types aren't shown.

As such, my question is threefold.

1. Is there a way to fix this and disable this "feature" that has no useful application whatsoever?

2. If not, is there a way to upgrade back to Windows 7 for free without wiping the computer?

3. Or am I screwed and never able to open these files again because Microsoft took away the usability?

I'm just about fed up with Microsoft and their "upgrades" that are actually "downgrades".

Answer:Is there a way to fix file associations?

What program are you trying to use with these file types?

What program was used on the Windows 7 OS?

Right clicking on any file.extension type gives a list of suitable programs but choosing "open with>choose default program" always results in this message.
Is this normal in Win7, I recently upgraded from XP.
If not, does any one know how to fix it?
Control panel>Default Programs often does not have the program in the list eg. NotePad which I would like for .srt.
Thanks, John.

I have Vista x64 installed on my system. For some reason, Windows has dropped some of my default file associations and won't let me change them back to their original configuration.

For instance, if I right click a .doc file and select "Open with..." then "Select a program from a list of installed programs" Microsoft Word is not listed in the list of programs. If I click on "Browse..." and select Word manually, I'm returned to the list of programs from which to to choose, but Word still isn't available.

I've also tried setting file associations through the control panel. Again, in the "Set Associations" window, if I click on "Change program..." I experience the same issue.

The issue is not limited to .doc files. For instance, Vista reset my .txt file association to Vista's Notepad, however; I previuosly had the default file assocation set to Notepad++. When I try change the default file association back to Notepad++ I experience the same issue as for the .doc file type.

Answer:Can't set file associations

Hello Hsrstud,

When in Default Programs and you have selected "Change Program" for the file extenstion, are you trying to select the EXE file for the program after clicking on "Browse"?

For example, I have Office 10 installed, so the path to Word for me is "C:\Program Files\Microsoft Office\Office14\WINWORD.EXE".

Hope this helps for now,

I have tried every way possible in Win 7 to set up a file association with '.pub' files and Microsoft Publisher, with no luck.

Normally under 'Control Panel' - 'Default Programs' - 'Set associations' you can browse for program and when selected you can make it the default progrm for the particular extension. I simply can not select the MS Publisher executable for association - it is just ignored. I suspect this may be a registry issue but am not sure where and how to fix it.

Answer:File Associations in Win 7

According to this wiki article & other (limited) info I've read on M$ Publisher It's like Micro$lop's version of "Who's on First?">>>Publisher's proprietary file format (.pub) is unsupported by almost all other applications, including other Microsoft products, although Corel Draw X4 features "open only" support. As such, Publisher is generally recognised to be of limited functionality where multiple-user electronic editing or dissemination is concerned. Adobe's PageMaker software saves files with a .pub extension but the two files are not readable by the other program - Microsoft's program cannot read PageMaker .pub files, nor can PageMaker read a Publisher file; they are different formats in spite of the extension similarity. Publisher supports numerous other file formats, including the Enhanced Metafile (EMF) format which is supported on Windows platforms. The Microsoft Publisher trial version can be used to view .pub files beyond the trial period <<<This may help some: Where is the Publisher viewer?>>>Microsoft Office Publisher 2007 does not provide a free, downloadable viewer for opening and viewing Publisher (.pub) files. I tried to change them back in control panel but exe files are not listed in the file types. The only way I got my files back was to uninstall adobe reader.

For two years my .VBS file association was corrupted until recently I found Brink's Restore Default Windows 7 File Extension Type Associations
- but now I have a new problem with FileAssociations in .TXT and .VBS file types, they persist as a mirror of each other
I was/am very familiar with built-in FileAssociations tool in WinXP

Using Nirsoft's FileType Manager changes to either .TXT or .VBS file associations are automatically replicated in the other
(using F5 to refresh between my edits)

I am wanting ...

Caption: open
Default:- Yes
Command Line:- C:\Programs2\Metapad36\metapad.exe %1
Caption: Edit
Default: No
Command Line:- ~~ notepad.exe %1
Caption: open
Default:- Yes
Command Line:- C:\Windows\System32\wscript.exe %1
Caption: Edit
Default:- No
Command Line:- ~~metapad.exe %1
When the default of either VBS or TXT is altered it automatically "swaps" the default in the other file-type
When I attempt to change "Open" in .VBS to ~wscript.exe ... the TXT open action is changed to ~wscript.exe

I have deleted all actions from .TXT (ie, removing C:\Windows\System32\wscript.exe %1 )
- created two new actions for .TXT
Open with Metapad.exe
Edit with Notepad.exe
... now VBS is a duplicate of .TXT "Open" action

Question: file associations

I have windows XP and since I got this computer last December my photos always had the colored swirly circle icon and when you click a photo to open it would open in the Microsoft picture and fax viewer. Then from there if you click the little icon on the bottom that said closes this program and opens the image for editing it would then open in arc photo impressions. Yesterday I installed the student edition of Microsoft office and it changed these settings. First of all the photo icons all have a sunset on them now. When I click to open a photo they do open in the picture and fax viewer but when I click that little edit button that cloes the picture and fax viewer and opens the photo for editing it opens in the Microsoft picture editor now. I have gone to tools and folder options and tried to change it back but I can't get it to work the same way. When I click edit in the picture and fax viewer I need it to open in arc soft not Microsoft picture editor. Where can I go to change that setting?
