Constant low disk usage in idle

Question: Constant low disk usage in idle

Hello,

A week ago, i noticed my hard drives makes small littles noises when i'm doing nothing on the computer; every few seconds, the disk makes slight noises..usually it is dead silent.

i tried to remember what happened on the computer around that time and here it is :
-internet explorer update.
-adobe reader and flash updates.
-some windows updates.
-a windows 10 update that i had to hide otherwise it would have installed windows 10.

the cpu usage goes around 0 to 5- 6 %, like usual i think. i haven't noticed any slowdowns during applications and gaming.
i don't seem to have more processus running than before (52).
i tried to see the disk usage using the ressource monitor and here is a screen shot at idle : Imgur: The most awesome images on the Internet

it would seem that the service System (PID4 ) is constantly writing something at roughly 10k octet by seconds. i don't know if it is normal and if it was the same value before the problem.
i don't know what to think of the info regarding disk activity below that.
Any idea of what i should do to shut down those noises? is that disk activity normal? (maybe it should be at 0)..

Thank you for your time.

Preferred Solution: Constant low disk usage in idle

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Answer: Constant low disk usage in idle

I would scan with MBAM

The free version has the same scanner as the paid.
Something writing data like clockwork and it wasn't doing it before makes me suspect one of the updates. If MBAM comes up clean then the only way to rule out the updates is to remove the new ones one by one.

That's the main reason I don't update unless it is a Service Pack. It is too easy to break something when you make multiple modifications at once.

So on Saturday of last week my PC started to run slow. I open up task manager to check what was going on and I am greeted with it showing me that I have very high CPU usage, and constant capped-out disk usage.
Over the course of the past few days I have reinstalled Windows 10, updated drivers, completely formatted my previous hard-drive, and just today I received a new SSD. However, my problem STILL persists, and I'm all out of ideas on what I need to in order to solve this.

My Motherboard is an ASUS Z97-P with an Intel i5-4690K processor. If you need more specifications, or a program to be run, then I would be happy to do so.

For further information, the system ran normally when booting from a Windows 8.1 hard-drive, and did have a blip of normal performance on Windows 10, but resumed misbehaving when the computer was re-started.

Answer:Constant 100% Disk Usage, 60-80% CPU usage. Both happen when idle.

in Task Manager sort by CPU usage and see what apps are responsible.

Hi, im running windows xp on a computer i built myself:

2.4ghz quad core pentium processor
2 gigs of ddr2 ram
nvidia 9800gt graphics card

I noticed a problem when running World of warcraft. I recently bought this card and was expecting to see around 70 fps with everything maxed out no problem. instead im seeing around 30-40 and the system seems to hang quite a bit. However, the computer runs farcry 2 quite exceptionally.

I started looking around for problems and noticed that in the task manager, my cpu usage was a constant 25% with no programs running. and i cant find any programs that are using even 1% of my memory. Anyone know what might be going on? thankyou in advance

Hello, I'm having a problem where windows utilizes 30% of CPU usage even when Idle.

The problem starts when i open a program like games or any intensive application that requires alot of CPU load. But after closing the program, i noticed in my taskbar that windows generates and continues to use up to 30% of CPU load on other applications for example Dwm.exe (desktop windows management) but if i stop DWN.exe from taskbar, another program or service will replace it and generates the same CPU load, if i stop that another will take its place like svchost or the taskbar.exe itself getting a 25 to 27 cpu load. Its like an ongoing cycle or Loop of CPU usage, its supposed to stop after closing programs.

I already have done steps i thought would clear this problem and these are:
Registry fix
ran Avast Anti-virus
reset BIOS
ran anti malware programs
ran Msconfig and disabled unwanted programs running on the background
ran windows 7 update
updated all my drivers

Summary:
The problem still persist. This problem doesnt occur after boot, everything is fine with my system idle getting 97%. it only starts after i ran a program that utilizes high CPU load but after closing it, the heavy CPU load continues by replacing the closed program with another either dwm.exe,taskmanager.exe,svchost.exe..etc

I hope somebody helps me resolve this problem, i greatly appreciate it. thank you

Hi,one thing drives me mad: when I leave my W500 (Win7 Ultimate 64x, 4 GB ram) in idle for hours without touching it, windows always writes to the harddisk once or twice a second. You can wach this with the resource monitor (accessible from the task manager). The process that writes and reads from my disk is "System" and the transfer rate is about 30KB/s, and the files being written to are system core components like: C:\$LogFile (System Volume Log) , $MFT or NTUSER.dat.This constant acitvity prefents my harddisk to enter power saving= spin down.As I said that happens if with zero user activity, and please don't tell me to disable Search Indexer, or SuperFetch or similar, since Windows is not indexing any files or preloading them, it looks like the NTSF file system is bussy with itself. How to stop that?? Any help appreciated!

Hello,

I've had this problem for a while.

After I stop using my computer, at the 4th minute mark of being idle something sets off. I always notice it when I work next to it because the vents rev up, it becomes loud, which means more wear and tear, etc.

So first things first, open up the task manager and process explorer to see what's going on. However, as soon as I move my mouse (or give any input really) everything calms back down to 0% or 1% and I can't really see what's driving it. I still managed to snap this screenshot though.

As you can see from it, BitDefender seems to be the culprit. But I don't understand why because even when I turn idle scan and auto-update off, the problem is still here. So it might not be BitDefender after all.

I've also thought of Windows indexing and defragmenting services which were set to run at idle. Nothing is solved after switching both to off.

I'd like to know how can I find out what process exactly is causing the CPU to rise, that is, high disk usage.

Thanks for any help!

Answer:High idle disk and cpu usage

Just sounds like normal windows maintenance to me, mine starts off automatically after being idle for a few mns, they should settle down after a while, but as soon as you use the machine windows pauses the process

Event viewer might also give an idea of what it is doing

A way to see what process is doing it
Disable screen saver if it comes on after a few minutes
open up task manager on the process tab sorted by cpu

sit and watch it for 4 mins and you should see which process is running

Basically exactly what the title says. I've been dealing with this for about 8 or 9 months now and it seems to come and go, and I've tried a lot of different solutions I've read around the internet. I've turned off all notifications and tips and tricks. I've completely disabled Windows Search. I've defragmented my hard drive. I've turned off Superfetch (and turned it back on when it's done nothing to help). I've run ScanDisk through the command prompt to search for and fix errors.

I'm at my wit's end here because outside of my hard drive starting to be on the way out, I can't really figure out on a software/OS level what could be causing this or how to stop it, but I never had the problem before upgrading from Windows 7 to Windows 10 and it seems to be a common complaint with 10, so I'm hoping there's just something here I'm missing.

Now, barring the rare case where my disk usage will jump to 100% out of nowhere while I'm using my computer, this mostly only happens when I leave it idle for 20 or more minutes, say to do the dishes or something. If I don't have something constantly running in the background, like a game, or suitably semi-weighty program, my disk usage will, after a certain point, skyrocket.

At that point, there's nothing I can do but A.) Force a shut down of my computer, since it will move so slow it can't even shut down or restart properly, or B.) Bizarrely, open up a disk monitoring program. This may or may not work because sometimes it's so bogged down it... Read more

I just use it for writing word documents and internet browsing. The disk usage is always 100%, even when it it just sitting there with nothing open.I've tried all kinds of things to fix this, like defragging, updating all dirvers, etc...Nothing has worked. I used one key recovery because my computer was slowing down since I filled up the hardrive and once I was finished I noticed after opening the task manager that my disk usage was jumping from 0 to 100% constantly and has been doing it for a 5 hours straight but the process that's using some much disk is something called "System"  If anyone could help that would be greatly appeciated.

Hi,
I'm having an issue where my computer is always maxed out at 100% disk usage even when I'm not actively doing anything. When I look at Processes in Task Manager, the offending process appears to be ntoskrnl.exe.
I've tried a few minor things including rebooting, disabling Windows suggestions notifications, disabling the SuperFetch service, updating various drivers, all with no luck.

The new Win8 touch laptop I just got is running ridiculously slow. Apps take minutes to open sometimes because the disk is constantly being used by several processes, even when idle.

The main culprits showing in Task Manager are "Service host: Local system", "Windows Modules Installer Worker", and "Antimalware Service Executable". Between them they are using 97+% of the disk and about 50% CPU constantly. It's gotten a bit better since I uninstalled all the trialware garbage that came on it, including McAfee, which was a massive slowdown. I plan on just using Windows Defender for security but it still says it's turned off, could that be the problem?

But for real, I'm pretty sure McAfee slows down the system more than the viruses.

Answer:New laptop, constant 100% Disk usage and ~50% CPU

I quit using Kaspersky anti-virus 2013 (our internet provider offers it for free), on my Windows 7 Dell Inspiron 1545 because it would use 100% CPU at random times several times a day. Went to Windows Defender and the problem cleared up. I now use Windows Defender on my new Windows 8.1 laptop.

I've had this issue for a very long time. And i have tried many solutions. Basically, my disk usage keeps jumping up and down, causing lag spikes, freezing my screen for a second or two every now and then, which is annoying me so much. I created an account here to post this. This is my last resort. If i can't fix it, i'll probably go back to Windows 7. I hope that'll fix the problem at least... but i'm starting to worry that this is an problem with my computer, and not the OS. I've had this problem on Windows 8, 8.1 and 10. I've upgraded 3 times to see if there would be a change. But no luck.

I have a 64 bit ASUS laptop, running Windows 10 Home. System specs:

Intel Core i5-3337U CPU 1.80 GHz
8 GB RAM
Intel HD Graphics 4000

Solutions i have tried:
Disabling Superfetch, Prefetch, Windows Defender, Windows Updates, Windows Firewall
Resetting Virtual Memory
Updating all Drivers
Uninstalling Google Chrome
Changing Settings in Google Chrome
Clean Install
Installing AVG so Windows Defender stops
Disabling background tasks in Task Scheduler
Closing Processes in Task Manager/Process Monitor
Installing all Windows Updates

I run a system I built back in 2009 with the following specs:

Tech Support Guy System Info Utility version 1.0.0.2
OS Version: Microsoft Windows 7 Home Premium, Service Pack 1, 64 bit
Processor: Intel(R) Core(TM)2 Quad CPU Q9650 @ 3.00GHz, Intel64 Family 6 Model 23 Stepping 10
Processor Count: 4
RAM: 3069 Mb
Graphics Card: NVIDIA GeForce GTX 470, 1280 Mb
Hard Drives: C: Total - 610476 MB, Free - 178886 MB; G: Total - 476936 MB, Free - 138294 MB;
Motherboard: ASUSTeK Computer INC., P5Q DELUXE
Antivirus: Norton Security Suite, Updated and Enabled

FYI, I have 4 GB installed, but I've never been able to get that last GB of RAM to be used (and I have made sure that my BIOS is set up to use it).

As time has gone on my computer has more and more moments when it just locks up; and it is also taking longer and longer to log in/switch users and for programs to open. My memory usage generally is below 70%, but I regularly get high disk usage warnings from Norton. Also the computer will freeze up when Firefox goes to certain sites like Comcast.net.

I've been trying to figure this out for a very long time and have gotten nowhere. I really appreciate your help.

I have been experiencing deteriorating performance on my computer characterised by the task manager reporting 100% disk usage, despite nothing showing more than 0.1mb/s I/O activity. I have no problems getting to the login screen, but as soon as I log in, it takes about 15 minutes before the computer will be usable. It seems to choke up when loading explorer and the taskbar. When it freezes, I can't hear any disk activity, but when the freezing ends, I can hear the familiar hard disk ticking sound. Unfortunately, I can't access the task manager during the startup, but I suspect that it's the same 100% disk usage problem.

I have disabled superfetch and windows search services to no avail. I am on a single hard disk that is practically still empty. I have run a chkdsk C: /f from the command prompt, and no errors were found. I have also manually set the page file to 8gb min, 12gb max (i have 8gb physical ram). At this stage, I'm running out of ideas. This problem seems to have started since the anniversary update. Please help with this problem, and let me know what information is required.

I use the malware removal guide above as my bible on removing viruses and has worked for years, but I think one's slipped through my antivirus software... I'm running windows vista and last time i knew(windows xp that is) it isn't normal for your disk to be in constant use, so i checked it out and apparently svchost.exe (LocalSystemNetworkRestricted) in the cause, and using 100+ mb of memory. I can't find any viruses, spyware etc with the scanners though. I've run out of ideas, could someone help me?

For the past month I've had disk usage spikles that cause my to lag and stutter in short bursts that interrupt games, music, and youtube videos. It first begaiin with my Mushkin ssd 120gb which I attributed to be the problem so i swapped it out for my current Sandisk 128gb ssd which seemed to fix the problem for about 3 days. Now its back and not as bad as it was with my first ssd but I'm still getting the 100% usage spikes and stutter. I used the SF tool and will attach some screenshots as well. Thanks in advance. This is super frustrating since its my first custom build and was hoping for better performance. okay. I'm running a windows 7 64 machine with an Intel Core i5 [email protected] 4 gigs of memory, ACPI x64, NVIDIA GeForce GTS 250...
ASnd the thing is my rig is sucking up 50-60% physical memory, doing nothing. I've turned off as many services as i can that I don't need, I've run MBAM and MBAR and MSRT and avast! and AVG scans to find nothing. I've changed from Zone Alarm and Avast!, to Comodo and AVG.

I still can't find this thing. I need help. I got Hijack this, and then I realized I don't even know what I'm looking at. 26 instances of missing or lost files. And now it looks like there's a new drive (E) on my rig that I didn't put there with 99mb of space on it...

Sooo. What should I do? I can usually stumble my way through this kind of thing, but I'm at a loss. OH! an instance of svchost.exe is currently at 175,812k and I just restarted. I dunno what that means.

This has been happening for over 2 months now, It happens around every 3 hours for about 20 mins each time, but it gets really ANNOYING. My friends said that I was lying and stuff so I invited one of them over and he saw it happen and he was stumped.

Here's a screeny:

Anyone got any advice?

Answer:95% CPU usage and 95% System Idle Usage?

There are times when task manager will misrepresent the total processor usage as well over 100% constantly. This is usually caused by one of three things :
1.Bad DriversMalware on the system
2.A Flaky Windows install - was this an upgrade or an old OS install?
3.A Problem with the motherboard (try a firmware update)

Upload your MSINFO32.nfo file.
Click on the start button
Type "msinfo32" (without quotes) in the search bar of the start menu, click the resulting link. It will open the System Information window.
File>Save. In the "File Name" filed, put "MSINFO32" (without Quote), give the save location to desktop, and click the "save" button.
Give the time for processing, it will save a .nfo file on your desktop.
Zip it, and upload it following the instruction.
Apparently we may say that it is caused by atheros network adapter driver.

Last week I received a brand new Lenovo Yoga 710. The internal fan produces a constant noise i.e. it is constantly running. Of course the fan/noise increases with CPU load but it never stops when the CPU idles (e.g. regular Office work). I checked with Windows Task Manager, that there is no background load that could produce CPU, Memory or Disk activity. Ambient temperatures are normal (22 degrees C), machine is on the desk and cool. Is there a BIOS upgrade or setting available that fixes this? Fred. P.S. I've recently been having issues with BSOD on my system, it's been happening at least three times a day. So far I've updated graphics drivers, run memtest86+ and made sure the temps are staying low.

One thing that is consistent is that if it happens while I'm gaming, it will freeze, and if I attempt to Ctrl-Alt-Del, it says "Preparing Security Options" and then will BSOD. Not sure if that helps determine the problem.

I'm not sure how to interpret the dump files, so hopefully someone can help with the issues I'm having. Let me know if I need to add more files.

Thanks!

Answer:Constant BSOD mostly while gaming, but also while idle

Just remembered, before it crashes, it has mentioned an I/O error, as well as something to do with a .dll file causing issues

For some reason both of my computers are showing a constant .05% network utilization. I dont know why as both are idle yet both my router and my modem are constantly blinking. It is really stating to make me angry because now all of my games lag when i play online. I cannot offer any more info. as i dont know much more. Any help would be appreciated.

Answer:Constant Network Utilization even when Idle?

Go download a packet sniffer (like Ethereal) and see what it finds.

For the last three months or so this has been an issue and at this point I'm thinking it's my RAM but wanted to check to see what everyone else thought. I use my pc for gaming (mostly battlefield 3 and planetside 2) and also as a media server for the home and away. I have teamviewer always on so that I can access my PC when at work. So the programs always running are teamviewer, unified remote, plex, and Serviio. I use two media servers because Serviio works best for my home network devices and plex for remote access. When I am away and have my PC on it will BSOD on its own and reboot or get many program crashes. The event viewer only tells me event id 1000 for many different programs like explorer.exe, bf3, etc. I have to reboot to get it to work again. I can be playing a game and it will crash randomly and I have to reboot. My system is clean. Checked for rootkits, full mbam scan, combofix all in safemode. I posted the dump logs accordingly. Hope you can help make sense of them for me. Thanks!

My motherboard came with a "fastlan" tool that is constantly showing my upload/download speeds over the network.
The computer is freshly built and the first things I did after getting windows 7 up and running were to install symantec and maleware bytes. I tried out zonealarm but it was freezing the system on boot so I just went with the windows firewall. I am also behind an airport express router.
I also installed peerblock more recently and block the microsoft list - so I could rule out background connections to the microsoft servers.

Still, im seeing constant network activity even when the system is idle after a fresh boot.
It isn't something that is only happening at the beginning - it is constant throughout the computer being on.
I do not run any stupid windows widgets or anything like that.

Here is my highjackthis log.

I am extremely grateful for any help/analysis/comments

Hey folks, I need your help troubleshooting here.

This is with a clean install of 8.1 from a MS ISO, downloaded and installed on Nov 14th. It is fully up to date.
This behaviour was not present with Windows 8, but I have done 3 clean 8.1 installs with the same outcome.

When I first power on my laptop, after windows is loaded, Core 0 on my CPU (i7 4700MQ) idles at around 90%, with task manager showing 11-15% CPU usage. System interrupts shows the most usage of all items on the list.

I have changed the minimum usage in power options to 5% for all power profiles. This behaviour is present under low power, balanced, and high performance power modes and doesn't change if I change them. (See Windows 8 task manager and 4th gen i7 ). In low power mode the usage is slightly less but is still present.

This processor usage continues as I run other programs, or as long as I let it idle without going to sleep.

If I put my computer to sleep, and then wake it, after idling for a short while..
all is as it should be!

I have the latest drivers for my chipset, GPU, WiFi, and Intel graphics (laptop has switchable graphics). This behaviour is present even with the OEM 8.1 drivers for these items.
All my other drivers are the ones released by my laptop OEM (Sager) in the last couple of weeks, specifically for 8.1.

There is a new BIOS that is being released by Sager (Clevo, which is the company that makes Sager branded laptops, has already released their "8.1" BIOS, I am... Read more

Answer:8.1 Pro idle CPU usage

So, I figured something out today..

If I unplug my monitor from the HDMI to my external monitor, the usage stops! Also if I boot without the HDMI in, there is no mystery usage. ALSO if I disable and then re-enable the ATI HD8970m, the usage stops!

This laptop has switchable graphics between Intel HD4600 and the ATI.

Anyone ever seen this before?

Question: CPU usage at idle

I'm having an unknown issue with a computer...when idling, with no background services or programs running, it jumps between 40-60% CPU usage in the task manager Performance tab. Under Processes, System Idle Process is at 99%, with nothing else showing up that isn't part of the operating system. In normal use, it acts like its doing something else so I'm betting the Performance tab is more correct than the Processes one. Scanned for viruses and ad/spyware with nothing showing up. Anyone know of anything else to try?

The processor queue is a bit higher than it should be at 2-3 nonstop, never dropping below 2

The system is a Duron 1GHz with 768MB ram, external video, sound, etc on WXP Pro/latest SP and hotfixes

edit:
diagnostic startup doesn't help

Answer:CPU usage at idle

This has to do most likely with the DPC Time Placeholder, or Interupts Time Placeholder.

This on my system is also giving me an annoying 4-7% idle jump in CPU while system idle process is at 99..

http://www.iarsn.com/ EDIT: Taskinfo download that to confirm this..Only thing that helps me is a reformat :\

Answer:Might be too much RAM usage on idle

Depends on what apps you have running ,even if the PC is "IDLE".
I see "Firefox" running ,that is consuming around 40MB.There maybe other apps like these.

As far as possible disable/remove all UNWANTED apps from startup. Will help a lot in reducing RAM usage.

So I've been working on my friend's computer for a couple of days now. She had been running a virus scan using AVG because the computer wouldn't let her get online and was running very slow. It found some infections and went to quarantine them when her computer froze. On a reboot, she got a blue screen about a Fatal Error.

I was able to get the computer into Safe Mode and then running again using the most recent configuration that worked. The CPU usage is still at 100% with no programs running are aoltsmon.exe (AOL top speed monitor), csrss.exe, and winlogon.exe. I set the priority of them all to low and the AOL executable was no longer a problem. The other two continued using about 50% of the CPU. After doing some reading, I found that some viruses disguise themselves as these executables. The blue screen was most likely due to AVG deleting one of them, right? Is it possible that these are not caused by viruses and is there any other way I can make them stop being such resource hogs? Unfortunately I didn't think to copy over the Hijackthis Log, but will the next time I have access to the computer if needed. Thanks for reading

This is not an issue but more a curiosity. I have the old Windows cup / ram monitor running as a gadget on Windows 10. When the PC is idle for a few minutes I notice the cup usage always spikes to around 10-13% and stays around that mark. As soon as I touch mouse and move it it then plummets to 0 or 1%. Is this normal? I wonder what it could be doing. It's not as if I can use task manager to see because as soon as I move the mouse or go to use the PC the usage returns to 0 or 1? I presume Windows is doing housekeeping stuff and it's a non issue?

Answer:CPU usage when PC is idle

Ok, I left task manager open and waited for a few mins in front of computer not touching anything. The service that starts up is system and compressed memory. It's always about 13% and seems constant when machine isn't in use. Like I say, as soon as I touch the mouse and move it the service reduces to 0. The actual memory amount this service consumes is only about 50 mb.

UPDATE - so I left it idle quite a while, about 20-25 minutes. Long enough for my screensaver to kick in. Of course when I touched the mouse to resume desktop cpu usage was at 0. What was interesting is I looked at c: drive (SSD) which had consistently been 247 Gb free but it had risen to 252 gb. And when I left the machine idle again for about ten mins the cpu usage stayed at 0. So maybe whatever the system was doing got enough idle time to finish. It'll be interesting to see after shutdown tonight whether this cpu usage rises again when I switch on again tomorrow - am hoping not. I guess it's similar to what I saw on Windows 7 (still faithfully on my older laptop) where I would notice the available free space, on occasions, fluctuate (mainly rising) after a decent amount of idle time. I'm not one to leave my machine on for prolonged periods when not using it and as the Windows 10 desktop is newish and I'm almost always doing stuff/installing stuff at the moment to bring it to similar functionality to my other laptop (mainly games) it gets very little idle time for more than a few minutes at most. Hello,
Before i give up and just delete this process all together, I thought I would ask people who actually knew what they were doing.
My CPU usage is constantly between 60-100% (almost always 100%) even when I'm doing nothing. In Processes, ftgrrifc.exe from AppData-Roaming takes up 40-50% of my CPU usage. Also, System Idle Process can jump anywhere from very low to near 50%. Skype.exe can also jump from nothing to 50% for a few seconds.
I would like my laptop to go to the good old days where i could actually play games/videos on my laptop. I am the only user on the laptop.

Firstly, I'd like to say hi. After reading many posts (and finding many solutions to my vista questions) I now have a question/possible problem.

At idle, I have 50% cpu usage at times. It seems to be msiexec.exe. I have absolutely no idea why. Is this a normal Vista behaviour?

Second, at startup I have 67 processes running, then it jumps to 72, then back down to 67. I had this amount on my XP pro machine, but had probably over 60 different programs installed, as it was a shared machine with CAD programs, graphic design software, etc. Now I only have vista, adobe cs3, blackberry, and office...

And for my final question, Why does eSata not able to "hot-swap"? Is this normal as well (sorry, I've always used firewire for my external drives, but now I'm trying to use eSata)

My machine specs are as follows:

Gigabyte GA-x38-DQ6
BFG 8800GT OC2 512mb
4gb Kingston HyperX 1066
Intel E8400
LG SuperMulti-Blue DVD/BD/CD/HD
Antec Sonata III case
Antec 80plus 550Watt PSU
Seagate 7200.11 HDD (three 750gb)
Vista64 Ultimate
Kaspersky A/V
CS3
Blackberry client desktop
Inventor
iTunes

Any help is greatly appreciated...

I have run 3 full-system A/V scans (and since this is a clean install with no internet downloads on this system including no mp3 downloads, etc) it has come up clean as expected...

Answer:50% CPU usage at idle...help (please)

Why would the Microsoft Installer Component be constantly active on your system? That should only be active when you're trying to install a new program, so obviously something is trying to install on your computer that you don't have any idea about.

If not, then vista also defrags constantly when idle so you don't have to run the defrag program. You might want to see if disabling the auto defragmentation helps any.

Question: CPU usage in idle

Hello,
I have question regarding CPU usage when my laptop has not have any application up and running (at least not by my request).
I have changed some of the Start Up in msconfig. Everything that I don't really need on immediate Windows start up I have not selected. That is fine.
But still absolutely randomly I will have my CPU usage going up and down from 1% to sometimes over 40% if not even more. Recently what has happened is that I left task Manager up (only, nothing else) in order to monitor CPU usage. While I was watching CPU usage was as I would say normal. 0%-7% up and down. After let say 45 minutes I got back to check again. I log on and much to my surprise I have noticed that my CPU usage in last, at least 10 minutes was constantly around 40%-50%. Strangely enough few second after I log on CPU usage has dropped down to the previous percentage.
I am talking over here about Acer 5378Z
4GB RAM
T4300 Dual Core
WD320GB 5400
Intel Graph (up to 1.8GB share memory)
Windows 7 x64 Home Premium (with latest updates)

Do you have any idea what it could be?
I also scanned computer against viruses and malware. All clear.

my cpu usage is fluctuating from 75% up to 90% when sitting on idle. when i attempt to do anything it takes forever and a day.

i have only just installed an HIS Iceq3 turbo, on a clean install of windows xp and the essential drivers, the cpu usage seems to be far too high.

although i know the card may be a little overkill for my system i didnt think i would have this amount of problem.

system specs:
NZXT Zero case (more than enough fans to keep system cool)
Asus A8R-MVP Motherboard
AMD 3700+ Sandiego Edition (Stock)
2Gb Corsair XMS CPT2 Memory running in dual Channel mode @ 2-3-3-6
2x WD Raptor 36Gb in running in stripe mode with 4Kb Stripe Size. (SATA)
1x WD Tb (SATA)
1x WD 250Gb IDE (IDE)
1x Pioneer 215 DVD Writer Black (SATA)
1x NEC DVD Writer (IDE)
1x Standard Floppy Drive
1x Creative Live! 1024 With Live! Drive Attatched
1x Realtek Ethernet Card
1x Enermax Liberty 620W
and now 1x HIS IceQ3 turbo HD3870

anybody know why i should have so high CPU usage when the only things installed and running are the drivers for all the components??

cheers

The only real problem I have is when I am playing a video or movie, it jumps up to 100% and causes the video to freeze up for a few seconds. I've gone through msconfig and turned off a bunch of start up stuff that I didn't need. I went from having about 50 processes to less than 30 and have seen no difference. I then changed the performance options from the Control Panel to optimize the system for performance. I have defragged, scanned with AVG and Ad-Aware and still have the problem.

Thanks in advance for any help you can give me.

Hello and welcome Uly5 for starters I would run these if you haven't already

http://www.sevenforums.com/tutorials/1538-sfc-scannow-command-system-file-checker.html

http://www.sevenforums.com/tutorials/433-disk-check.html< if necessary include the /f and /r in the command line as per Option2

http://www.superantispyware.com/

http://www.malwarebytes.org/products/malwarebytes_free/

http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/download/adwcleaner/

ADW download from bleeping computer delete any rubbish found with themalware scans

(NBIf one is running Kaspersky security it may rant about ADW - just ignore it ordisable Kaspersky while the ADW is being used)
Also check in msconfig - Start > type msconfig and see what is starting up in the Start up tab and I would look at the running processes in the task manager.

Lets do that first then move on.

Many things run in the background in Windows 7. Your Task Manager can tell you, but it's probably nothing to be concerned with.

My CPU usage hovers between 25-30% without any programs (except explorer) running. This is causing my sound, CD playback as well as any other media etc. to skip/stall dramatically. A serious problem for me since this system is my DAW (and only source of income!) I have done complete scans with AVG, Spybot and Ad-aware. Nothing found by AVG except to note a change in the MBR?, though Spybot and Ad-Aware both discovered and eliminated 'threats'. As suggested in this forum under another thread, I tried unsuccessfully to install Livecare, but it errors out when trying to uninstall dotnet2.0. The 'Processes' tab under task manager is apparently no help as it shows 'system idle' at 99% at the same time the CPU usage is at 25% under the 'performance' tab. The CPU usage is a normal ~0-2 percent when I bootup in safe mode with networking. Words aren't adequate to describe how much any help will be appreciated.... Base System: AMD Athlon64 3200, 2 Gigs RAM, Primary HDD 2 Raptors Raid 0.

Answer:Cpu Usage At 25% At 'idle'

There's a lot of services and programs that are not turned on when you go on safe mode compared to normal mode.
Take a comparison between safe mode's task manager and normal mode's task manager

Question: CPU Idle usage

My CPU usage when it is in idle stay between 5% and 10% most part of the time...with some peaks of 20% some times(NOT really often at all)...

Is it normal? I have many svchost running background...I dont know if I can disable than...anyway...

My CPU is an core 2 duo E7500 at 2,9Ghz
One more question: I bought GTA IV and it drains very much from CPU(benchmark say 98% of CPU usage)...in msconfig, in the part of services, can I disable than all? One guy told me that I can and after doing to reboot...than the windows will only iniciate the services needed for the functioning of the PC...than when I start some task that need a service that was disabled this one will start again...is it true?
Thx!

Answer:CPU Idle usage

Hi there.....

dont disable all services... , just leave them if your not sure about it, there's a few links on the web which will help you ascertain which services you require & those you dont

here's one of them

in regards to CPU usage, head over to ''task manager'' via (ctrl/alt/delete), when the window opens select ''processes'' here you'll see what apps are currently running & the amount of CPU power is being used.

you could post a screenshot of the processes box here & we'll see if anything looks abnormal...

GTA4 is a rescource hog....its that simple.

top end machine still struggle with this game, & its pretty poorly coded for the PC.

looking at your specs, as long as you can play with some degree of fluidity & your not getting 10-15fps (like a lot of ppl do), then i'd be happy

I have an AMD Quad 965BE, and i've noticed that when the computer is idle and i'm not using it, the CPU fan speeds up a great deal due to heavy CPU usage. I'm wondering if this is due to some service running in the background on Win 7 64-bit only during idle periods. It's a clean install so it shouldn't be anything i've loaded on that is doing it.While i'm using it, my CPU runs at about 86F and the CPU fan is inaudible. But when i'm away from the computer for a while, I can hear the CPU fan making a lot more noise due to being higher RPMs. When I get back on the computer, I check the temp immediately and it shows 105F. But immediately after I start using the computer again, the CPU load dies down, the temp cools, and the fan speed slows down again.I don't like this because the stock fan makes a noisy whine at high RPMs and I also don't like the thought of my computer running overtime when i'm not using it. Anyone know what the culprit could be?

my dad's computer has 80%-90% cpu usage while idle.

in task manager, the process using the cpu is not there, so I had to run process explorer.

There's 2 processes using all the juice: Hardware Interrupts and Deferred Procedure Calls.

Everything's fine in safe mode, though.

anyone knows what's going on?

I have moved your thread to the software forum as this would not appear to be a malware issue.

My Laptop was never run into this problem. My laptop (axioo PICO DJV) is became REALLY slow and laggy this very day. When i open the taskmgr it always said that the CPU Usage is 100%, even when windows is idle at the desktop with no any program running. I've tried many repairing utility (cleanmgr, defrag, uninstalling rubbish programs, readyboost, even System Restore) and none of them worked. The processor became really hot and always at the limit spot of 1,666 GHz, even when the windows is idle. Is there any way to fix it? since I can't use my laptop now because all programs will gone not responding. (sorry about my bad english, I didn't knew much)

Answer:CPU Usage 100%, even when idle

Work through the Troubleshooting Steps for Windows 7 especially focusing on establishing a Clean Boot, using Process and Resource Monitors to monitor high usage patterns. If you'll report back results of each step we may have others.

Hi
My Win 7 Acer RAM (3GB) is running at 46% idle? This seems to be alot?
Though it does not increase that much with windows open, even when I open WMP and play music it only goes up to 49-50%.
I use the gadget on screen and double check it with task manager, they are the same.
This is more than the previous Vista Basic machine, which I returned, it ran at 40%?
Is there a way to adjust or sort this?

Oh, this morning it went up 99% and I could not switch it off, I had to hold the button to switch off?

Any help.
Thanks.
Neil

Answer:Win 7 RAM usage at 46% idle?

Open Task Manager > Processes tab > click on "Memory". There you will see which processes eat your RAM - ordered by size. Maybe you have too many startup programs. Have a look in msconfig and disable those that you do not need (which are probably all). On the other hand, there is nothing wrong with the system using all the RAM. I assume it's all paid for - LOL.
But when you have excessive usage (like the 99%), you can also kill the culprit process in task manager. No need to shut off the whole system.

Hi all, have this problem for a while now. Ram usage is extremely high while PC is in idle.I have 16GB and 99% ram usage and 70-80% is quite often. When i start the computer it's fine and then it starts slowly to increase to as i said 70-80 and finally 99%. Computer doesn't lag or lacks of performance even when 99% of the ram is used ?! If you know how to fix that s..t pls:) aa and that happens in win 10 and win 7 also:(

Answer:High RAM usage in idle ?

You might have the problem I had earlier in the year. BC helped me fix it with the microsoft link. The other link is my post last feb. Looking in task manager you should be able to find whatever it is that is hogging the memory.http://www.computerhope.com/forum/index.php/topic,153868.0.htmlhttps://support.microsoft.com/en-us/kb/2889748However its very odd that the issue affects Windows 10 as well on same system. Guessing you scanned for virus's and its clean.

So for some reason my CPU is always at around 50% idle. It says there are 54 processes running yet I can only see around 15 in the Processes tab... Anyway to fix this?

Hmm i used Temp Files cleaner, restarted, ended the process like LCORE for keyboard, razer, hamachi, poweriso and alike and it was 5% idle. Anyway, Firefox also tends to freeze up quite often too. I think my HDD could be failing but I am not sure, anyway to test HDD health?

Answer:Windows 7 CPU Usage @ 50% idle

http://www.seagate.com/ww/v/index.j...toid=720bd20cacdec010VgnVCM100000dd04090aRCRD links to SeaTools, which can deep-test several makes of HDD, not just Seagate.

Heavy CPU usage can indeed mean a HDD is dying (slowly). I expect it is something else though. Look at the the processes tab and click the 'show processes from all users' checkbox. Update your networking driver software to the latest version. Don't allow install of the singing-and-dancing bits of networking software. (The monitoring in other words - networks work or dont work in a pretty obvious way)

Also look at the services tab for most of what is going on.

This link http://www.techspot.com/vb/topic172991.html#post1103669 is for similar but not identical problems, and worth looking at for the techniques involved in sorting the problem out. Especially note Process Explorer post#4

My memory usage is at 50% when no programs are running. I just downloaded several updates and I'm not sure if that has to do with it, but restarting after the updates was unusual and restarting generally now seems to take longer as if there's a delay in the process of getting to the sign-in screen.

I don't tend to look at my memory usage but I did a month ago in checking my virus scan. During that scan my memory usage was essentially flat at 500 MB or 25%.

Thanks

Added a shot of processes of all users while idle.

About 2.5 hours after posting I closed the installed programs window I was looking at and saw the desktop icons kind of flicker. I checked my memory usage at idle and it was down to 38%.

Restarted, back to 50%.

Answer:Memory Usage 50% at Idle

Sorry that you are having problem, but its easy to check
With system restore go back to pre update times. If memory is usage is back to normal that is the problem.
Now restore the updates one at a time, to find the culprit. Report back and lets see what we can do.
If uninstalling the upadates does not work, report back and we will test the memory and check for other possiblities.

Hi all,

I've got a problem with my PC - I've searched high and low but can't find a solution - any help would be really appreciated.

When it's idle I noticed that my CPU usage was hovering around the 20% mark (I only noticed as I could hear my CPU fan speed up). As soon as I move the mouse to turn the (blank screen) screensaver off, the CPU goes back to 0% usage.

I'm trying to track down the offending process using Process Monitor (in particular the Event Profiling option). The process that is affecting my CPU is svchost.exe - which I know is the host for a number of services. I checked the PID and using Task Manager, checked what processes this particular one was hosting:

UxSms
UmRdpService
TrkWks
SysMain
PcaSvc
Netman
IPBusEnum
hidserv
AudioEndpointBuilder

I also filtered my Process Monitor log to see events that were logged to that svchost.exe. What I found was an entry for every single directory on my C and D drives - see the following extract:

Answer:CPU usage high at idle

Don't know what the logged events mean, but I think you may have a scheduled task that is set up to run when the computer is idle. If you can find that task you may be able to solve it. I don't know a way to find tasks that run when idle except to open every task and check its conditions and that's too difficult. But if you open a command prompt (cmd.exe) and run this you'll get a list of all running tasks:

schtasks /query | find "Running"

But chances are that when you run it after the computer is in idle, the task will stop. Put the code below in a text file and save it as .bat When you run it it will list all running tasks every 30 seconds, and it will include a time stamp too.

Code:
@ECHO OFF
:LOOP
TIME /T
schtasks /query | find "Running"
TIMEOUT /T 30
GOTO LOOP
And try Process Explorer, also from Sysinternals, instead of Task Manager. It's much better!

My PHBs laptop has gone crazy - or something more sinister.

CPU is maxed out on the "System" process. Shutting down never fully completes - system hangs and mouse pointer does not move. Only the default wallpaper and the mouse cursor is on the screen.

According to him, he was giving a PowerPoint presentation using a data projector when the battery died. Back at the office the machine was plugged back into the docking station to charge up. After switching on, it was very "sluggish". He called me to fix it. First thing I noticed was the 100% CPU usage.

OK. What I've done so far:

Scanned for viruses and grayware - Trendmicro Officescan Corporate - nothing.
Scanned for spyware - Spybot S&D - a few tracking cookies.
Checked the event log - nothing unusual.
Checked device manager - no malfunctioning devices.
Checked "System Information" - IRQs, Conflicts, etc.
Cleaned out temp folders.
Turned off everything I can think of - e.g. system restore, hibernate, stopped MSSQL, BOINC, screensaver, etc.
Ran chkdsk.
Removed and re-seated the RAM and HDD.

Ran Process Expolorer which reports the following:

System Idle Process
--Interupts ~30% CPU
--DPCs ~55% CPU
--System ~15% CPU

If I start a Spybot S&D scan, ProExp reports that it (SpybotSD.exe) uses up to 96% CPU - so the above processes "back off" completely.
If I stop scanning, Task Manager shows the "kernel times" go from 5-10% while scanning to ~98... Read more

Answer:XP SP2 hp laptop. 100% CPU usage when idle.

Does the same thing happen when logged in as a different user (or Administrator)? Also, does it happen in Safe Mode?

Sounds like you've already done the main checks. What I might try at this point is just leaving it sat there over the weekend (turn off any screensavers, etc), see if the process that's running finishes whatever it's trying to do, then check Event Viewer and see if you can work out what it was doing.

I might also be tempted to temporarily install a distributed computing project, like [email protected] or similar, and see if that runs -- because it's set on the LOW priority, I'd be interested to see if it gets a chance to do anything at all, or if this rouge process is actually taking up all the resources for a reason, if you see what I mean.

Hey guys,

Here is my rig:
Vista Ultimate x64 SP1 OEM
4 GB of ddr2 at 1066mhz
Intel Core 2 Quad G9450 2.66ghz, 12mb L2
Nvidia Geforce 9800 gx2, 1gb
EVGA 750i FTW SLI motherboard
antec 900 case

Here's my problem:

I will be running Vista Ultimate with few processes and only using about 25%-30% of my 4gb of RAM. However, randomly, the RAM will skyrocket to at least 77% and there aren't any programs which could possible be utilizing that RAM that are on my pc. (Seriously what program could initialize taht would use 2 gb of memory off the bat).

I figured it might be some gay spyware or crap, but I have Kaspersky Anti-virus 2009, and a 64 bit operating system. Plus, I do not go to promiscuous website which would attract that crap, so I have no second thought of this being spyware.

Another thought. The RAM only caps out when the pc has been powered on for over an hour...

This is sucks and I have to restart the pc to reset the RAM, and I would just like to fix this. Please help.

Hi guys! I'm Pig and I'm new!

I got my pc 3 years ago. It's a windows xp sp3. Three days ago I reformatted my computer because of some silly driver glitch. (I couldn't seem to finish installation of my printer's driver and my wireless internet card driver for some reason)

Now with all updated drivers and such, usually my cpu usage ranges between 3% to 9 %. But it's jumping between 27% to 55% with no running program. I thought it was simply dust so I cleared them completely off, no dice.

My system is:
Windows XP sp3 Professional
AMD Athlon Processor LE 1640
2.59Ghz, 3.25 GB of ram (which I swore I though I threw 4gb of ram in my computer)

I dun know much about computers aside from playing games and Microsoft Word/Mozilla for schoolwork. Please tell me what other info is needed to solve this annoying problem. Thanks so much! Onegaishimasu!

Hello,

First, this is not spyware. I have run every cleaner known to man, and followed advise on the hijackthis forum when i thought this was a spyware problem. MY COMPUTER IS CLEAN.

What is happening is, looking at the task manager the system idle process will be at 98-99%, which means there should only be 1-2% left at idle for other processes, but the CPU usage jumps and varies from 20-40%, while the system idle process is at 99%. Weird.

I ran memtest86, and it is not a memory problem. I am wondering if i have a conflict with my IRQ's? Could this be eating up my processor in the background? Here are my conflicts:

I recently had this very same problem. Having a very humble AMD Athlon 1700xp, 256Mb ram system meant that it was very very restricting.

I found the problem to be McAfee's security suite. Likewise Norton Internet Security, in my experience, is extremely system intensive. After removing McAfee everything was back to normal.

Check the processes list in Task Manager. This should also give you an idea about what's causing the problems.

Hey everyone, I have a fairly new computer I built with these specs.

Asus P8 Z77-V Pro
Intel Core I5-2500K 3.30 GHz running at 4.33GHz right now. The OC is very stable.
Asus GTX 670
16GB Corsair Vengence DDR3 2133
Crucial M4 512 GB SSD
Win7 64bit OS

This computer was built mainly for gaming, but I have noticed BF4 crashing lately and found a lot of processes running, (over 100) and my CPU usage going from 0 to 5% at startup and then jumping to 50% or more later on. It then stays about 45 to 50% CPU usage even at idle.
I know most will say shut down processes in Windows Task Manager until you find the one hogging all the CPU cycles, but i've tried that without any luck. The computer runs fine so maybe i'm blowing this all out of proportion. But my CPU usage is always around 50% and nobody else i have compared it to has CPU usage of over 8% at idle.

Malware Bytes and MSE did find a Trojan or two last week but it tests clean now.

Does that amount of CPU usage sound normal and what can i do to figure out what is using it all?

My computer is running slow 90% of the time. When I go into task manager it says that CPU usage is between 80% to 100% at all times even when im not using the computer. One day it works perfectly and for the next week I can barely even use it. Before I take it to a technician I was wondering if there was anything else I could try.

Things I have tried...

Updated all drivers on my computer
Used windows update to get all system updates
Used Msconfig and disabled all startup items. restarted and still slow.
Virus scans
Defrag
system cleanup
I even formated the computer once. It still crawls.

If there is anything you can think of or if you know what the problem is please please write back. This is unbearable and frustrating cause I cant figure it out. I would assume it was a motherboard or cpu problem but then the computer works perfectly for a few days. Thank you for reading.

Hello,
Basically I noticed that my PC has a lot of RAM used but no program is using the RAM - see attached screenshots. Obviously it doesnt really affect me until I launch a game: eg GTA 5 which before ran happily at 60 and is now stuck on less than 1 FPS when I get into the game (even after spending like 20 minutes in lag hell to try to reduce all the settings to the lowest)
However Rainbow Six Siege runs at 120 FPS with no issues, so GTA may be an isolated incident.

(Also important to note I only have 8Gb of RAM, even though it says */16.0GB for the committed memory)

Answer:High RAM usage while idle

You might also want to post a screenshot of your start ups.

Cortana seems to be using a lot of memory for just being idle. If this is not being used, perhaps you might want to disable that. Your CPU also seems high for just being idle. I don't know if this 'jumped' while you took the screen image, but to me it appears that in these three images, your CPU load ranged between 15 - 36%, which seems high for your processor during basically idle time. You might want to boot into SafeMode and see what things look like. See HERE.

I would think you should see a noticeable drop in resource usage while in SafeMode. If that is the case, then it might be some software conflict.

You might have to disable one start up at a time, then test your system. If no change, go back and enable it, then disable the next one in line.

You might also be experiencing some memory leak some place, that might be the cause. However, you would have to identify which program or application. If you recently installed something just before the problem began, that might be a place to begin.

There is something that might help, at least until you get this sorted out. There's a free program called CleanMem.

I have used it for years, and I do have it on my Win-10 machine as well, although it does not indicate that it's compatible with win-10 (yet).

It will force the release of unused memory every 'X' amount of time. It's defaulted to every 15 minutes, but I have mine set for every five minutes. When... Read more

I just recently built a pc

Specs:
Asus P8Z77-v deluxe
3770k-not oc'd yet
Gtx 660ti
2 Kingston Hyperx 128gb RAID 0
660w corsair PSU
16gb corsair memory

I installed windows 7 no problem. I went to the website for my mobo and downloaded all the latest drivers, installed them no problem. However when i am doing nothing the cpu is always at 3% and spikes to 5-9% EVERY few seconds. I looked in resource manager and see that "System interrupts" keeps moving to the top for cpu usage. I researched it and people said that is could be a driver issue. However, I installed all the drivers from the website.

My Asus G73SW that I just sold had the same things(even more) installed and the cpu ran at 0% idle and rarely jumped to 1%. Why is a machine with twice the computing power using more resources to run on idle

Any ideas would help

Answer:3770k idle never under 5% usage in WIn 7

My guess is that it's your SSD RAID 0. As far as I'm concerned, SSD's are still in beta, no matter what the manufacturer's may say. I read a LOT of posts still (after what, 5 years) from people all having similar problems and manufacturers are still coming up with work-arounds, driver updates, blaming the BIOS, etc... so without really knowing any of the specifics and getting elbows-deep in the guts of your build, my first area of scrutiny would be your dual-SSD RAID.

Try pulling off both SSD's and install a standard HD in their place and see what happens.

Finally got my beautiful machine. There is a problem though. After a couple of minutes after boot hot air starts to blow and Lenovo PM utulity shows CPU usage around 115% (!). Nothing has really been installed, apart from newest Avast and VLC. Couple of SAFE websites visited. Task Manager shows svchost using up 85% of CPU and there are several unknown to me services attached to this process. Certainly not something I have ever known. Has anyone experienced this?

Hi there,

I found this forum when my laptop was infected by qvo6, and I've removed that hijacker successfully using the instructions here (http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/virus-removal/remove-qvo6.com-browser-hijacker), thanks very much to all the volunteers!

Not sure if I'm being more sensitive to my laptop's changes because of the qvo6 incident, but recently I've found that my CPU usage is always high - at least 50% even when I'm not running any programs.

When I open Windows Task Manager the numbers in CPU never add up to 50%, so I'm not sure what process is hogging it. Once I open Chrome, it can go up to 80-90%, which hasn't really happened before (I usually can use Chrome, Firefox, iTunes, Microsoft Word simultaneously without any problems).

Would someone be able to help me with this? As mentioned, when my laptop was infected with qvo6, I ran iExplore, adwcleaner, malwarebytes and the scans are clear except for a "##### C:\Users\AppData\Roaming\Mozilla\Firefox\Profiles\XX_clean\prefs.js"

Appreciate any advice, thanks in advance!

ETA: First time user here, so please let me know if it's not the right forum for this issue.

Answer:High CPU usage (50% even when idle)

Please post a screenshot of Task Manager...which reflects this high usage.

Hello - Can anyone tell me how much power an idle PC draws? When a pc is idle what would use the power (apart from the fan)?

Answer:Power usage of an idle PC?

I've been told about the same as a 100-watt light bulb - but I cannot prove it. The system continues to power the memory, and offer power to the peripheral devices, and it continues to monitor itself - how else would it know to wake up when you hit the mouse or keyboard ?

Hi

I have an issue with my CPU where CPU1 will stay at 60-100 % work rate when idle, and CPU2 is staying at around 20-60%. The rest are staying low at around 0-10% with a few minor spikes here and there.

I have unparked all my cores to try and get the latter ones to take some of the work away from number 1 and 2, but it doesn't seem to help much. I'm wondering what could be causing this. Im gonna give you a picture showing how this doesnt add up from my point of view, and i'll write my specs down.

Fyi my main problem is when i try to run games like Arma 3 (which has pretty horrible single threaded CPU usage as i understand it) and it doesnt have any juice to work with as it's only using my already overworked CPU1 and maybe a bit of CPU2.

Another odd thing to note is that the game runs smooth sometimes, and other times the FPS is so low when i enter the game and throughout the game that it's basically unplayable.

Specs:
- Intel Core i7-2600K CPU @3.40GHz
- 16 GB ram, 1600mhz
- 2x AMD Radeon HD 6900 crossfired
- 800W Cooler Master silent pro gold
64 bit windows

Answer:High (idle) CPU usage

First....I see you are using MSI afterburner, turn that off and see what happens. Next...I see you have and AMD 6900 series GPU and you're running the Crimson driver package for it (is that the BETA driver)....not possible as those 4xxx, 5xxx and 6xxx series GPU have been labeled as Legacy cards and no further support is available and the last known driver for them is the 15.7.1 package. That might be your issue right there.

I'd start off with turning off AfterBurner and then installing the correct GPU driver and then check your results.

Hi guys,
When I open Windows Task Manager the numbers in CPU never seem to add up to the 50% that it says it's being using, so I'm not sure what process is hogging it. Once I open Chrome, it can go up to 80-90%.
Also when I'm in chrome and I enter an url it seems to take longer than usual and even not going to the address just staying in the blank page.

I got told that I should include screenshots from both task manager and process explorer.

PS: I'm a new user but I'm a bit tech savy and my most fear is that it is the beginning of hard disk failure.

Hello FrekkonYour Kaspersky is running very high. Uninstall and re install it. Have your product key handy. Some errors might occur when removing Kaspersky Lab products via the Start Menu or Control Panel. As a result the application may not remove correctly or remnants of the application may remain in the system. To fully remove the installed Kaspersky Lab product, use the Kavremover utility. Note that the utility deletes all activation data and you will need to activate your product after reinstalling.

What may cause this to happen? my gpu usage sometime stays at 0, and sometimes it goes all the way up to 99% and stays there for 10-20 secs. sometimes it spikes and goes to 50-0-35-0-70-0 a.s.o and then it stops, and goes on like that. Im just afraid that it'll ruin my gpu since it does really heat up much more (up to 60 C) when the gpu usage goes up. And my normal idle is around 27-30 degrees. Is there anything wrong with my drivers? or may my cpu be the cause of this? i dont think it should unless i have any incorrect drivers installed. I'd be happy if you could respond with a proper answer that will make me realize what the problem is.

Hello, here is my problem. Starting on Friday (the 13th... go figure), my virus scanner (McAfee) detected the trojan "generic PWS.y" and tried to delete it, and then computer suddenly started to lag a lot and the temperature was a lot higher than normal, so I opened the task manager and found out that around 50% of the CPU was being used at all times (this fluctuates; rarely it dips to the 30% range but it is almost always at 50% or slightly higher when idle; when applications are running, obviously it goes much higher). From an online database I determined that none of the running processes were known viruses/worms/whatever.

Since then I have tried dusting out the inside of the case, running McAfee virus scan, running Lavasoft's Ad-Aware, defragging, running McAfee again in safe mode, running Windows Defender, using CCleaner, and running BitDefender's online scanner, but nothing changed. BitDefender did find the Generic PWS.y worm again, located at C:\Windows\system32\sdqnike.dll (but it could not be removed). This same path was labelled "suspicious" by Panda ActiveScan.

Since then I have done the five steps (with the exception of downloading IE Spyad, since the links provided did not work for some reason). The CPU (an Athlon 64 X2 dual-core) is still using around 50% when idle, and I'd greatly appreciate any help you can provide. Please be aware that I am not particularly good with computers, so if more information is needed, please tell me what it... Read more

IN recent weeks I have commenced experiencing what appears to be a "hogging" of my resources. It first manifested itself during typing of simple email messages. One or 2 lines of type on the monitor screen would follow in sync with the keyboard and then, suddenly, the cursor would stop even though I continued to type. Sometimes it would approach as much as a minute before it would catch up to where I was on the keyboard. I also noted these interruptions in scrolling, in backspacing, etc. Today I was in Task Manager and noted that there were 51 processes listed and even though no programs were running the CPU usage indicator for one of the processes, "System Idle Process", was jumping back and forth between 00 and 100% (all the others were holding steady at 00 or thereabouts). I am networked (2 computers) with a router and builtin firewall. I'm also using Norton Anti-Virus and Zone Alarm Pro. Frequent scans for viruses show up nothing. I also frequently run Spybot & Destroy, Spy Sweeper, and Ad-Aware. So I don't believe it's a result of hacking. What else could it be? Can someone tell me what the "System Idle Process" represents and what kind of readings should it be showing when nothing is running? I have a fairly fast processor (1.5 Gb), 256 MB Ram, and am running XP Pro.

Hello Crew!!! I have been using a ThinkPad Z60t, running the OS WinXP Pro that came bundled with the Thinkvantage Software. I have had no problems with my computer for the two years I have been using it. I use it as much if not more then a traditional desktop, covering all aspects of my life, from business to gaming (although it is not a gaming comp, it does me fine). Recently, within the last week or so, I noticed a huge lag-like spike every minute or less, including when the system is idle and isn't playing anything. I ran McAfee as well as AdAware and found no issues out of the ordinary. After reading a few forumn posts, on other websites, I ran a processes check, with Microsoft based software "Sysinternals" and found that over 50-80% of my processor was being used by Deffered Procedure Calls (DPC's) and Hardware interrupts. I chose to reinitialize my entire system, back to factory settings, wiped it all. Guess what it is still doing it!!!!   I have completely updated my OS, and other forumns suggest that there is a hardware issue, or intermittent signal with the CPU or Motherboard, what can I do to test this theory or to find solutions, please help me!!!!!

I'm wondering if my idle ram is normal for Windows 10. It's using about 1.2-1.5GB on idle without any programs running.

On Windows 8 it my idle usage was 900MB - 1.1GB with no programs running and with all the same programs installed.

So is that a normal amount for windows 10? Does W10 just utilise more ram?

How much memory is windows 10 using for you?

Hey guys, recently my W10 PC seems to be using a fair bit of CPU. I noticed this because my Battlefield 1 fps appeared to have dropped. First thing I did was roll back my nvidia drivers to the previous version, but then I noticed my cpu usage. I seem to be using 35-45% cpu usage at idle. I've never seen it go below 35% (In safe mode its around 2-3%).

Things i've tried:
- Sfc scannow at boot (it found & fixed a few things)
- chkdsk /f at boot
- Stuff from here: Windows 10 High CPU Usage Fixes
- Superantispyware scan

Hopefully someone will be able to point me in the right direction!
Thanks!

How do I decrease it ?
Of all the PCs I have seen, mine seems to be the highest. Generally it is around 800mb to 1.3gb on average IMO.
I have checked Task manager and no program is using this much ram ? So what's eating it so much ?

Answer:1.7-1.8 gb RAM usage at idle [Win 7 64bit]

I wouldn't consider 800Mb to 1.3 GB RAM usage on startup with a 64 bit OS as either unusual or abnormal. I wouldn't be concerned.

Adding up the items in the memory usage column rarely provides meaningful results. The default numbers do not show full usage of the process and there are very significant users of memory that are not processes.

Memory usage in any modern OS is highly dynamic. The memory manager will always try to assign memory where it will do the most good to maximize performance. It will always try to find some use for as much memory as possible. Unused memory is wasted memory. Memory usage at bootup may seem high but that is only because there is currently no better use for it. Starting a large application will result in this usage being trimmed back as needed, drastically if necessary.

You could post a screenshot of Task Manager - Performance tab but I really don't think anything is wrong.

I don't have much running in my processes, but I just noticed a few days ago I can hear my RAM squeaking away like when the computer is really trying to work hard like when I'm processing video or something, but now it's doing it all time. Under the task manager it says my CPU Usage is 50% constantly. I ran a full scan with Kaspersky and it didn't find anything, I have a hijack this log if it helps. Any ideas?

Answer:cpu usage high at idle

Easiest way to ID the culprit is to start the taskmanager and look down the list of services, a lot of open office progs seem to do this and other GNU licensed stuff, seems not to be as good as proclaimed, but taskmanager should soon tell you the culprit.

Hey there. My name is Josh and I hope you guys can help me.

For some reason or another, my computer will randomly slow down and start eating away at my disk and cpu.
I can't pinpoint a particular program that causes it, but I'm usually running Firefox when it happens (I almost always have Firefox open) although it's happened even when Firefox isn't running.
When I check my Task Manger/Resource Monitor it shows a constant 99% CPU usage, but combined the programs only show using up to 3% of the CPU (Not counting System Idle Process of course)
The slowdown stutters back and forth, so sometimes I can move the mouse and click, but then 5 seconds later it's frozen up again.
During this time, Resource Monitor shows spiking Disk usage on my HDD and it's always (when it's there at all) from pagefile.sys.
It has some read I/O activity that's usually below 40,000 B/min, but the write I/O activity can regularly show between 50,000,000 and 100,000,000 B/min.
Thanks for any help you can give me!!!
