Program/ Application installation question

Question: Program/ Application installation question

When logged in to a domain-based workstation under an admin account, if you install a program will this install under all the user accounts? If I recall correctly, I had an application that was installed on one user in the past, but not the others.

Also, what is the best way to install an application for one specific user and not the others?

Whenever installing an application/ program in the past, I always logged on to an admin account and subsequently installed the application. I am just curious if there are other options and if so, how to do it.

Preferred Solution: Program/ Application installation question

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

I have a Y700-34ISH Desktop (ideacentre) - Type 90DF00B2MW, and the "Driver and Installation Application" program is installed. When I clicked on the driver menu it showed a bunch of items, which I went ahead and installed. It asked me to restart the PC, but after I did the items are still showing. 1. What is happening?2. What are the benefits of this program?3. Is it ok to uninstall it if I don't want those benefits?

3. Is it ok to uninstall it if I don't want those benefits?
EDIT: It seems like this program "updated" several drivers to older versions. At least that happened with Geforce, and I also had to reassign my headset as the preferred output in the sound settings.
Confusing stuff like this doesn't make one happy after spending $1500 on a new PC.
Mod's Edit: System model added to the front of Subject line to improve visibility / clarity.

Ok, the background: on a friend's XP machine, she asked me to create a limited account for her some so he could have his "side" of the computer they shared. I did so but soon learned there was a game he wanted that was already installed on his mom's side (which is an admin account). So, I uninstalled the game from the admin account and tried to re-install the game using his limited account and found I couldn't install it. Fine. I do some research and find I can use the "run application as" feature to run the installer for the game as an administrator from the limited account. Cool. I do this and find the game actually DOES install but in the administrator's account, not in the limited account. Not cool.

The question: is it possible to install an application in a limited account using an administrator's account? How would the above scenario have gone using Vista Home Basic, for example?

I am writing this because I am seeking help with an Email related issue.

I am trying to use a program that retrieves Inbound Email attachments and resends them to a new destination… it is a dispatch program.

The Help Files associated with this program make reference to “The Attachment Folder” from “My Email Program”.

I am currently using Microsoft Outlook 2000 as my Email program although… I also have Outlook Express as an optional email program that I could use.

I would prefer to stay with Outlook 2000 though…
“if possible”.

I am enclosing an excerpt from the “Help” File associated with this program so you can see their exact reference to an “Attachment Folder from my Email Program”.

I have tried contacting The Program Manufacturers Tech. Support but as yet have not heard back from them.

I am looking for any advice or direction to be able to Locate and Identify this “Attachments Folder” in “my Email Program” that they make reference to.

If you can assist or advise me in any way I would appreciate it very much, as I am completely lost as to what to do next.

My Operating System is Windows 98SE.

Thank You

Answer:Simple Program Application Question Re; A Specific Folder ???

Outlook does not save the attachments in a "separate folder", it bundles them up with everything else in a .pst file.

Other email programs such as Eudora use an attachments folde, located wherever you want it. Looks like thats what the program is designed for?

Hello Folks...........

My C: drive recently started giving me HD521-2W error when I ran "PC Doctor 5 for Windows" diagnostic multiple times in the past few weeks.

I created backup images of both the partitions on this 320 GB HD ( Active partition named "HP_Pavilion" and Primary partition named "HP_Recovery") onto an external USB drive using Macrium Free edition.

I later took PC to a PC repair shop and installed a new 320 GB WD hard drive. However, he DID NOT create 2 partitions as the old drive BUT he made this new drive bootable and downloaded all the necessary drivers.

My questions are :

# 1 ) Is there a tool or an utility I can use to download all the drivers CURRENTLY installed on the old hard drive onto a CD/DVD for later Clean Install of XP?

# 2) How can I make this new hard drive look exactly like the old drive - I mean, it must have 2 partitions using Macrium backups images I already created ?

I hope, I explained this situation to best of my knowldge and created least amount of confusion.

Thanks in advance for your help.

I'm building a new server for a family friend who owns a body shop. The server uses Windows Server 2003 and connects to 4 workstations via a switch. The current problem I'm having is with the installation of the claim/estimate software installation. When you start the installation it asks you to choose a "drive letter to associate with the destination location" and to make sure that the letter chosen is available on all connected workstations. I assume this means it's mapping the shared folder with the drive letter chosen? However no matter which drive letter I choose I get the following error message:

"The drive letter associated to the destination location could not be created. Setup cannot proceed and will exit"

Any ideas? The software being installed it Mitchell's Ultramate 7.0...

Answer:Need help with server application installation...

Ahh Mitchells.....

Create a share...and give that share full rights to start off with.
Using the substitute command, make a batch file to substitute a drive letter on the server for that share. Plop that in the startup folder if you want, so every time the server reboots, the script makes the substituted drive letter. That drive letter you use for the subst drive should be the same drive letter workstations use to see this share.

Now install to that path.

What to do, if our applications have files that may change during the execution and resides in Program File.If we are Administrator there is no problem...?.With out setting the security policies is there any other way?.Where should we keep such files?

Answer:Application Installation in Windows 7

For files that need to change either use the users Roaming profile for files that need to persist like options. For temporary files (cache, etc) use the local profile.

For an example look at how Firefox does it.

I've written a vb Express application that relies on a log file on the C drive. Is there any way to make this file be created (its a blank text file) when the application is installed and also, this file is written to by a couple of logon and logoff vbs scripts, can these scripts also be installed as logon and logoff scripts when installing?
Lastly, when I install it, it says something about unknown/untrusted publisher - can I stop this?

I've got an application that installs with a default license key (a .lic) file, but despite my user account being an administration account, Windows 7 says access denied in installing this file. I can drag the .lic file into the folder and Windows 7 will pop up a notification saying I need administrative permission to do this but allows me to "Continue" "Skip" or "Cancel"

I press "Continue" and the .lic file is dropped into the folder with no other problems.

I've also enabled the actual Windows 7 Administrator account that is disabled by default, and tried dropping the .lic file into the folder and it drops in just fine.

Why would MS make one user account that's an Administrator, not a true Administrator despite being in the same user groups and supposedly having the same permissions?...

Answer:Windows 7 and application installation issues.

Have you tried right clicking the program and selecting "Run as Administrator" yet?

I've oracle installed in my system. due to memory deficiency and concerning about the future circumstances which may arise, Is there any way to change the installation directory for Oracle without reinstalling it.current installation directory is C:\OracleXeI want it to be   D:\OracleXehere is windows xp sp3such that, the application will work as it before.regardssan

Answer:how to change the installation directory for an application?

I think not.  As you know, a multitude of entries get added to Windows registry during software installation.  You need to uninstall Orcacle and then install it at that new location.  Do not merely try to move the program folder for Orcale program files to a different location via Windows Explorer.  That would most likely mess things up and make Orcale inoperative on your system.

You can do this with Process Monitor from SysInternals. No installation needed. Download and run Procmon.exe.

Hi Everyone

Hope this is the right place to post given this is my first time round. I have a new application update for an X-Ray machine we use. Unfortunately this application will only allow you to install on WIN7 Pro versions but we run Enterprise with no way to permanently installing a Pro machine.

So here is my question: How can I fool the application into thinking its installing on Windows 7 Pro?

I have already tried the options blow:

1. Change registry setting to Windows 7 pro in:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion

2. I have used the Windows 7 Downgrade application but not willing to run the upgrade on the machine
Downgrade Win 7 Ultimate to Win 7 Professional Without Clean Install - Microsoft Community

Answer:Bypass Application OS Installation Restriction

I am not aware of any supported method of fooling an application as you desire. An application can obtain such information in a variety of ways, which one being used known only to the developer. I think few applications would be fooled by changes in the registry key mentioned. Making such changes could have unpredictable consequences.

Downgrading an OS seems a sensitive area, particularly when the OS is an Enterprise edition.

What happens when the installation is attempted?
Have you contacted the software supplier about the issue?

I don't know the difference between an Application and a Program. Thought the Geektionary would help, but didn't find anything there.

I have 2 Dell Windows XP computers.

If I want to copy something such as Microsoft Money from one pc and install it on the other, what exactly do I need to copy? The application or the program?

And where do I find what I need to copy? :confused

Any help in this area is so appreciated.

Answer:Application vs. Program

Well basically an Application is an executable file such as Notepad.exe whereas a program can contain more than one application along with numerous other files such as DLL files.

Since the days when Windows had a registry it is far more difficult just to copy a program as it often has numerous entries in the registry which will point to locations of files within the program - this is why prgrams these days are generally installed. Only if the program contains a small number of files or is a self contained executable (such as Notepad which is both a program and an application rolleyes) can a program be copied.

Hope that's all clear. :confusedrolleyes

Somewhere along the line, a partial installation of presonus' StudioOne application was made on my laptop. Now, everytime I re-boot a minimum of two, and sometimes 6 to 8 installation dialog boxes are launched. I've tried the following with no satisfactory results:
Running through the install procedure. Which still results in the install launching on a boot.
Removing the program (though add/remove)
removed any references to presonus in the resgistry
I can find no reference to it in startup
I can find no install code anywhere. As soon as it starts to run, on re-boot, an exe is put into C:\Users\gbetts\appdata\local\temp. Symantec always sees this executable as a potential virus, and ends up putting in in quarantine.
I find no reference (as yet) in the event logs for this install in an attempt to locate the code that is run and remove it.
I'd really appreciate any suggestions as this is driving my quite nuts. I'd hate to have to rebuild this box just to stop this madness.

Thanks in advance!

Hi Lenovo Community, My W520 arrived today (hooray!), and I installed an 80GB Intel 320 Series SSD I had previously into an Ultrabay caddy for a boot drive. I cloned a partition of the base HDD to the SSD. I restarted, went into the boot settings, and set the SDD as the priority boot drive. I changed the registry to default install programs to the larger partition of the base HDD, and some programs (i.e. TeamSpeak, Peer Block) installed without issue, but others (i.e. Adobe CS, MS Office) would only install if I was booted from the HDD. One installer gave me an error regarding the Windows Installer Service.  My thoughts on what the issue might be:-HDD isn't cloning correctly-Something in the registry may have gone awry  I've already tried recloning the HDD partition, rebooting etc. Please help! Thanks for your time. Cheers

If I have some windows aplication that runs some periferial hardware scan - to check out folder content.
Can I prevent access and let application sit inside it's installation directory ?
Or I just have to prevent access to every important folder specifically ?
I mean - do I have to set all important folders access only to authorised users and admins ?
And what kind of user are any windows application - just simple user ?
Excuse me about some complicated queries?

Answer:To prevent application access outside it's installation directory

If you have programs you don't want other users running then only install them to your user account. Most will offer you the choice.

Anyone using this HOT rated download, and will it have a direct or indirect benefit regarding popup or popunder ads? The screen shot looks pretty impressive. I'm already employing CCleaner for the drive.

Answer:CleanCache application/program

This is more of a question for the Software Forum.

Using this or CCleaner is not necesarily going to stop popups? It is not a popup stopper? It's a drive cleaner which will remove some items that could possibly be related to some problems you are having.

You most likely have malware on your PC judging by those file names, so running the below and attaching the logs requesed will be a start, then if the files are still their further removal instructions will be posted to aid you in removing any malware files including those two mentioned.

Please follow our standard cleaning procedures which are necessary for us to provide you support. Also there are steps included for installing, running, and posting HijackThis logs as attachments.

Run ALL the steps in this Sticky thread READ & RUN ME FIRST Before Asking for Support
Make sure you check version numbers and get all updates.
Very Important: Make sure you tell us the results from running the tutorial...was anything found? Were you unable to complete any of the scans?...Were you unable to download any of the tools?...Did you do the on-line scans as suggested? etc.

After doing ALL of the above you still have a problem make sure you have booted to normal mode and run the steps in the below link to properly use HijackThis and attach a log:

I'm trying to execute an application (simulator) using a system call from my program. Once the application (simulator) starts, I want my program to perform certain tasks on the GUI of the simulator: fill in certain fields, start the simulation, collect the results, and close the application. Can any one recommend a way to perform this? Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Hello can anyone please tell is there any back up software that can back up a particular application for me? For example, if there is any update for a software and i want to back up the software before updating it, is there any way to do so? I know i can back up the whole computer using Norton Ghost but what if i just want to back up a particular software?

Answer:Backup program for a particular application

Not generally doable. When programs are installed, they make changes in the registry of the computer and in various parts of the Windows operating system. Simply finding a program that will copy over the files, will not copy the registry changes or any other simply copies files. That is why people who try this run into problems. To date I know of no program that copies applications into a useful format to save. There are migration programs and imaging software etc, but nothing for single applications to my knowledge.

What is the worst legit program/application you've ever used in Windows? Exclude mention of antivirus and anti malware because there's already a popular thread about it on MT.

To moderators, please move this thread if I've posted it in the wrong place.

Answer:Worst program/application you've ever used

Backup software, it made me loose all backups, twice. First one "only" corrupted all files.

But the worst was the one from Google. I removed online files and upon sync, it removed local files. I had to redo everything.

I have sworn never to use any automatic backup software ever again, manual backups for me, only copy/paste locally or online.

I am using MS office Pro trial on widows 7 operating program and have just brought the full retail version.
When I insert the installation disc the program will not install, after about 5 minutes I get a message"

*D:\is not a valid Win 32 application.*

The retail version I brought is certified for windows vista, I loaded on my PC which is running XP and the disc worked as should.( I did not go through with the install on the PC, I just tested the disc)

I copied onto a external hard drive and tried to load it from there. No go!

I even used my product key code on the trial program but it rejected it!

Any ideas out there would be most helpful

Answer:Installation of Office Pro 2007 - Error is not a valid Win 32 application

This may get round the problem if its related to "old" progs on your install disc. I used this method when installing Office 2007 with a packaging date of March 2007 in case it saved lots of product update downloads - worked perfectly but I still had 20+ updates downloaded after install.
If you have a reasonable broadband speed then [dowload the Office 2007 trial|] . MS email and display a trial product key but when the download starts to run don't use this key but your own "full" version product key

Just re read your post - you are going from trial to full so what you do is follow MS instructions
Follow these steps to activate the trial:

Follow these steps to convert the trial:
You can convert from the trial software to a full-version either before or after your trial period ends.

Before the trial period ends:
You will start receiving expiration reminder messages indicating the date when the trial will expire. At this point, you can convert to the full product in two ways:

1. In any of the expiration reminder messages, click Convert, and then follow the steps in the conversion process, below.

2. At any time during the trial period (or even after the trial has expired), you can open any of the Microsoft Office System products, and in the Help menu: click "Activate your software".

After the trial period expires:
The software goes into reduced functionality mode. So... Read more

This only started happening recently, but a system restore didn't seem to fix anything. An installer will freeze when it is nearly complete or when it is just starting. Apart from the Razer driver, I do not receive any error messages. It also leaves many ISBEW64.exe processes open which I must kill manually. Some programs will install without a problem however. Thoughts?

Answer:Application and driver installation freezes, stalls or fails

ISBEW64.exe is the setup engine for the 64-bit version of InstallShield, the installer used by many applications (but by no means all). I'm guessing, therefore, that those apps which install without problem do not use InstallShield.

I think that your InstallSheild installation itself needs fixing. This may help:

Every once in a while I use a third-party application called File Renamer Basic (Sherrod Computers) and I've never had any problems with it but tonight I opened it and I got a Windows popup that was trying to install and configure Microsoft Office Home and Student 2007, which is already installed on my PC).

I followed the directions and I inserted my MS Office CD-ROM so it could locate a certain file. It said that the path could not be found and that I needed to find the installation package HomeStudentrWW.msi in a folder so that it could install the product Microsoft Office Home and Student 2007. After all this I got an Error 1706 and it said to see SETUP.CHM for other solutions.

I did a thorough search online but everything I found regarding this issue involved only problems opening Microsoft Office applications, not any third-party programs. I tried everything I could think of (uninstalling/reinstalling/updating/registry edits/system restore, etc.) and nothing solved the problem. I did find that if I kept pressing "cancel" about 5 or 6 times eventually the program (File Renamer Basic) would open and everything would be fine, but obviously there is some kind of bug or conflict going on and I would like to fix it if possible.

Any ideas as to what is causing this?

Somehow an application program has arrived on my pc (running XP), with an icon on my desktop. I have deleted the icon but cannot delete the program, I get a msg saying 'access denied'. I can change the name and move it around folders, except to a cd writer! As far as I can tell I have full authorisation. I have run AVG 6 as well as the Pit Stop full test, no problems showed up. I have a flash application running within a secure site. The program uses resources such as video clips and powerpoint presentations. Video clips work OK, but when I ask it to open a .ppt, a popup window appears briefly and then disappears again.
Popup blocker is disabled, and I don't have google or yahoo toolbars.
It's running in a trusted site with all the settings set to minimum security.
there is nothing wrong with the ppt - it runs perfectly on my pc, and from within my secure site.
And (perhaps crucially) it all works perfectly in Firefox!

This all leads me to conclude that there is a setting in IE7 that is wrong, but I can't for the life of me figure out what.

Can anybody help?
The ppt is one of the Resources within the SCORM-compliant "OCR PE AS level Teaching Support" from Heinemann. This is running as a course within the Fronter VLE. (Just on the off-chance that there is someone with specific knowledge of this!)

Thanks in advance.

My family computer is a desktop PC running Windows Vista with McAfee. I make sure to run all updates ASAP. My updates are current through yesterday. When I tried to update my computer this morning, the updates failed with an unknown error. "Error(s) found: code 80070103 Windows Update encountered an unknown error"

This morning, I turned on the computer to find that McAfee has been disabled, Windows Defender has been disabled, and that I cannot turn them back on. Additionally, I cannot run any programs. Invariably, I get the response "program.exe is not a valid Win32 application" regardless of whether I run the program from the C drive or a USB.

Neither Internet Explorer nor Firefox are working; I can only access the internet by opening windows explorer and typing an address into the address bar in that window.

I have tried running McAfee in safe mode, but get the same message. I tried the "repair computer" function when I boot the computer, but it insists that I have another drive attached (though I have unplugged the camera, flash drvie, external hard drive)... There is nothing attached (except for the keyboard and mouse). I have tried restoring my computer to a previous restore point only to be told by the computer that there are no restore points.

I am relatively "new" to programming. I always have wondering how to develop a Windows client application and made it a stand alone program that install at the client computer with the "double click" (autoexec?) feature by following Windows standard installation instructions at screen. Can somebody please tell me how is that done and list some basic book references that shows me how to do that?

If I create an application with Access 2000, can I convert it to a standalone application that install and behave as explained above?

Thank you very much. It will sincerelly be appreciated.

Is it possible in Windows 7 (either via a windows feature or an add-on program) to password protect individual programs or software so that when you try to run the software you first need to provide a password? Please note this is not the same as UAC in Windows 7. I want to be able to lock down certain programs so that when a user tries to run the program (say Internet Explorer or Microsoft Access) they will be prompted for a password. This would be very handy in a shared user scenario. Is this possible via the group policy editor? Thanks!

Answer:Password protect an application or program

This is not supported by Windows but third party applications may provide this feature. Windows security doesn't work that way.Windows security is based on the users account and the groups it is a member of. This is in the files and folder security properties. Don't change anything here unless you know what you are doing.Note that if the user is using an admin account he can evade any and all restrictions you might impose.

I'm troubleshooting a Windows XP (SP2) eMachine (with a fresh OS install on a new hard drive - no original eMachine software remains on the system) and I've never encountered such a persistent problem: certain applications (Fruit Loops, Adobe Acrobat Reader, among others) run fine after installation, but after a reboot they will not run. Their shortcuts, as well as the actual program executables, lose their original icons and are mysteriously changed to the generic window icon (the one Windows will use for a file type is doesn't recognize.) When I try to run these programs, using the desktop shortcut OR the actual executable, I get the error dialog box: "This program is not a valid Win32 application." This happens to several applications, while others (Pro Tools, Acid) remain unaffected and can be executed w/o any problem.
*Note: this computer is not connected to the Internet, so it is unlikely that this is some type of virus.

What could be causing this? Any suggestions are greatly appreciated.

Hey guys, I realize that I am not the only person that has encountered this problem, as my research has shown. I tried to ready some similar posts and problems on this forum and others, but I seem to get stuck at certain steps. Here is my situation. Im on a Dell latitude d630 running windows vista. I fell asleep watching Dexter online and when I woke up there was a new looking Anti-Virus program on my task bar that i do not remember installing. The program showed hundreds of infections and was prompting me to delete only if i bought their antivirus. After realizing I could not delete these infections i tried to close the program and open my Malwarebytes Anti Malware and also Synamatec Antivirus. Both programs failed to open, and an error message bubbled off of the "Antivirus" icon. As soon as this happened I tried harder to download new antivirus and to get this off my comp. But no matter what I download, I am unable to install/open. I cannot open task manager, and recently new virus alerts have been popping up. One says i have an infiltration alert about trojans and password stealing attacks, and when I press stay unprotected www.*censored*.com pops up. I tried to fix this going off what you said to others, but I would appreciate a little one on one help to walk me through this, as each case may be different entirely. Thanks a lot!

Basically, I noticed very recently that one of my programs that requires an internet connection (P2P Program) is unable to connect to the internet, despite having worked fine for almost 2 years now. Hello Everyone,

I've finally had enough. I am sick and tired of using windows control panel to uninstall programs. Why? Because 1/2 the time I use the add/remove programs thing it doesnt uninstall the program completly. It will leave folders, files, registry entries, hidden crap, and who knows what else still on my computer from the program I wanted to uninstall. Then I have to go back and try to delete them manually, then pray that a registry cleaner will find the rest (which usually doesnt happen).

I'm looking for something that will completely remove EVERYTHING when I uninstall a program. I dont care if it costs money or if its free, as long as it works.

Thank you if you can help.

EDIT: on a side note. Also looking for an easy to use free macro program. Somthing that I can use to press a key stoke, have a few minute delay, and repeat the key stroke. Then loop that untill I press stop.

Please check this against your installation diskette." as shown in the attached image. Clicking on 'OK' closes the error dialog box and the app opens without problem. Answer:Can anyone recommend a Application & file transfer program?

Transfering your files back depends on the method of how you have backed them up.
If you have done it using Bounce Back Express, maybe this application has option for restoring the files?

Also if you want to transfer application files from XP to Win 7 this will not work.
You will need to reinstall all applications on Windows 7 and then transfer your other files such as video, music, pictures etc.

Hello, this is my first time using this forum so I apologize if I do something wrong.

So normally, whenever I hover my mouse over a program located on the taskbar, I get a preview screen showing what is currently being viewed on that program. I can still get that, however, it never shows itself above the active program (last program I've clicked).

This happens with each and every program I have opened and tried. I tested the method of having the active program sitting in a place where it would only slightly conceal the preview (not maximized). Then having inactive programs (I've clicked on something else besides them last) behind the active one and the preview. Then I can see that that the preview will cover all inactive programs but the active program will still cover the preview.

I hope I've detailed what's happening well enough. I don't remember when this first started happening but I do know that it is not supposed to function like this. The preview should always be visible and on top no matter if there are active programs or not.

I also tried to get a picture of it happening, but it's kinda hard to take a picture of something that requires the active program to not hide itself (like snipping tool does).

The instruction at "0x00bb1f3e" referenced memory at "0x00000004". The memory could not be "read".
Click on OK to terminate the program

iexplore.exe - Application Error
The instruction at "0x03051f3e" referenced memory at "0x00000004". The memory could not be "read".
Click on OK to terminate the program

taskmgr.exe - Application Error
The instruction at "0x009c1f3e" referenced memory at "0x00000004". The memory could not be "read".
Click on OK to terminate the program
And so on, with everything from Reaper to firefox to Task Manager. I've also noticed two other things, which are:
A. this error never occurs if I manually end the task from within task manager or tskill, only when the program legitimately exits.
B. The first hex value always changes, but the second value, the memory being referenced, always stays the same.

Answer:Application error every time a program closes

1) Install Windows 7 if compatible. 2) Is this the same machine that was infected with malware?"THe only thing stopping me is a lack of knowledge about how to install windows while preserving documents and data from the old windows install, since I currently do not own a working external drive."If there is no external media to save the data to, this may present an issue: There may be a workaround, but this may also be forthcoming....One could (I suppose) create a partition on the HDD to house the data. Use the other partition to install Windows; then access the "backup" partition affterward.I would suggest imaging the HDD before continuing this journey. One never knows; I have seen a lot of strange things and it is allways recomended to have a quick mulligan on hand.

Have you run an up to date virus checker? I ask because the SirCam virus can modify the .exe file association in the registry.

I recently upgraded my Lenovo 3000 H210, M/T 5355-2NU from Windows Vista Home Premium (64-bit) to Windows 7 Home Premium (64-bit) with the media received through the Windows 7 Home Premium Upgrade Fulfillment Program. I installed the 64-bit version of the Common Components Installation v1.0.0.8 and restarted the computer and then installed the 64-bit version of the Lenovo Driver and Application Installation program, v5.1.0.0900.  Afterrestarting the computer, I receive a message box stating "Cannot access the Service Partition".  If I click onLenovo Driver and Application Installation on the Start Menu, I receive an error that the installation has notcompleted.  Restart to complete the installation.  If I restart the computer, I am back to the first error. Any idea how to resolve this situation? Any help is greatly appreciated.  Thanks in advance. -Larry

Answer:Cannot Access the Service Partition after installing Lenovo Driver and Application Installation

I am having the exact same problem. It's driving me nuts. I also downloaded and attempted to reinstall the factory software from Lenovo's site. It installs but will not launch, giving me the following error message: "This software is for intallation on a Lenovo computer." Or words to that effect. Hopefully someone knows the answer. Tried tech support twice. Ugh... Thanks in advance. -----------------------------------------------------------

OK. I've tried 3 times and wasted 3 CD-R's. I'm trying, with Nero, to burn a data CD: just a bunch of jpg's and freeware. I've read that Burn4Free (the 1.0 release, as I've heard the others contain spyware) can cause conflicts, so I uninstalled Burn4Free. I check the box for "verify written data" in Nero; But I still get an error message after trying to Add/Remove programs through Windoze. (Sorry to make this so long) I just inserted the Data Cd I tried to burn. "Windows can perform the same action each time u insert a disk or connect a device with this kind of file." Pictures. I select "take no action". Fast forward to "Windows cannot find the installation program..." I can Browse for the install program, but I don't have the slightest idea where to look. Any ideas? I'm running XP Home. Thanks!

We lost power to our computer one day last week and it hasn't worked properly since. Ad-aware would not open so I tried uninstalling and reinstalling. Somewhere during the installation process it freezes up and I get an error message saying it needs to close. When I try to open already installed programs I get an set up error that says error writing application data. I tried uninstalling and reinstalling those programs also with the same result. Here is my hijack this log if that helps at all:

Hello,I am looking for a program capable of redirecting ALL current internet speed only to one application, ensuring it works possibly as good as it should. So far I only found programmes meant to limit the applications speed, which is theoreticaly the opposite of what I am looking for.I would LOVE you guys to reply to me with ANY ideas because I am trying to fix a problem that none have yet solved. If you want to read more about the problem, head here and maybe you could help me to solve it, if not, staying here will be appreciated too. Thanks and best regards,

Answer:A program for maximising internet priority to only one selected application

You could use almost any firewall product to accomplish this. Even Windows Firewall should allow for this type of management. If you turned on the limitation for the entire PC and then permitted the one application for full access, wouldn't that accomplish what you are trying to do?

had this problem started a few weeks ago, really sick of it. whenever i open itunes/skype/any file vista asks me what application i want to launch it with. i cant even go to system restore and return it to a previous setting as i dont know what application to get on the program.

please help, i know very little about computers

Answer:Solved: Whenever I open a program it asks what application id like to launch with

Try this fix: EXEFIX

Unzip the fix and extract the .REG file to the Desktop. Right-click the .REG file and choose Merge. Note that you need to be an Administrator to apply this fix.

Reboot the computer.

If the fix only opens as a text file, right-click it and select Open With > Choose Program... Then, select the Registry Editor.

If the Registry Editor is not in the list, browse to C:\WINDOWS and select regedit.

I tried using Auslogics Boostspeed trial version,
It's actually pretty cool 'cause it scans and shows how many junks files, registry errors, fragmented and disk errors there is, plus status if it's critical or whatsoever.
But since it's only a trial version, I can't fix/repair all of the errors.
the last time i checked showed that my computer doesn't have disk error but have other issues that need to be fixed. So i was wondering if there's such a program or i can manually check and fix stuff like this. Thanks in advance and have a nice day people^^

Answer:Is there a program/application(free) to scan and fix disk errors?

Windows has a built in disk checker. You can access it by right clicking on your drive and choosing "properties", then "tools" then "error-checking".

You can also run it from a command prompt.

You can also download disk utilities from your drive manufacturer's web site.

Hi, my os is window vista. Recently i opened an unknown application (.cfg file type, some games files) with notepad editor to see what it is inside. I change something and save it. the file type is still cfg but now it always open with a notepad which coz my game to how do i remove the open with notepad and set it to a an unknown application..which my com don actually recognizes it and will prompt me to search the internet.

Answer:Changing open with default program to unknown application.

Press Start (the Windows icon on the bottom right), type regedit and press enter. Press Continue when the UAC thing pops up. Now navigate to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Classes, find the .cfg key and delete it. This will reset it so when you open any cfg file it will ask you which program you want to open it with. You may have to restart your computer after completing the above steps.

You posted this in the wrong section by the way.

Hi, critical one this for me and desperation is setting in.

I have an application to load and assess for work before the end of the week. As a new expensive app it is USB "dongle" protected. When I try to run the setup.exe to install it I get the following error word for word:

"SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\VirtualDeviceDrivers. VDD. Virtual Device Driver format in the registry is invalid. Choose 'Close' to terminate the application". That address is reported incomplete without HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\, and why is VDD displayed unattached to its address, or am I just being too paranoid? I am then offered Close and Ignore as options.

The entry under VDD in the registry is:

"VDD, REG_MULTI_SZ, C:\Progra~1\Symantec\S32EVNT1.DLL" presumably a Symantec NAV dll. Symantec's support system is of course no real help.

Not being a registry wizard. can anyone else offer any insight as to what is wrong here?

Answer:[SOLVED] Registry Virtual Device Driver format preventing application installation.

Please help if you can!After my son used my computer I noticed two problems which scare me and indicate (I think) a virus problem. First: after typing a Google query, I click onto the desired link and find myself redirected to other search engines which also performed the same search I had just requested from Google.Second: I downloaded the free Ad-awareAE program onto my desktop, but when I clicked on the icon to install it, i got the message "AD-Aware.exe is not a valid Win32 application"Based on some internet searches I made, it seems these are symptoms of virus activity and I am petrified to do any online banking. I was able to download Avest Antivirus and found 4 trojan viruses on my pc. It eliminated them but the two problems still persist. Please help! Thank you, thank you, thank you!{EDIT Moved from XP to Am I Infected~~~boopme}
