Com Surrogate - shows up now and again in the task manager - virus?

Question: Com Surrogate - shows up now and again in the task manager - virus?

Today I noticed a Com Surrogate in task manager that shows up every so often.
Is this normal? How can I tell if this is a virus?

Would appreciate some help.
Thanks in advance.

Preferred Solution: Com Surrogate - shows up now and again in the task manager - virus?

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Answer: Com Surrogate - shows up now and again in the task manager - virus?

Hi:

Same computer as the one here: Question about Com Surrogate ?

If so, the answer then would probably apply now, as well.

Cheers,

Hello, I've had several warnings by Norton Security Suite within the past week or two that a trojan has been blocked. However, after the latest trojan block, I soon after received a warning from Norton that COM SURROGATE was using a lot of memory. Upon checking task manager, I counted at least (10) dllhost.exe (com surrogate) in the list. I did a system restore to several days before. So far I haven't noticed any ill effects, but ask for help to determine if I am indeed trouble free. Thank you in advance!

These multiple DLLhost.exe entries in Windows Task Manager keep multiplying and multiplying. Any games or programs I use in full screen mode get minimized. I never had an issue until I started noticing this when checking task manager. I checked another laptop and a desktop and they show no such surrogate entries. Even as I'm typing here, the cursor will stop blinking as if another program is loading in the background. Microsoft Security Essentials and Malawarebytes Premium have not been able to get rid of this.

I appreciate your help and expertise. Thank you.

Hi, Recently i've noticed my system is only using 2gb of ram and is running really slowly. I run a Rampage III Motherboard with 6gb of ripjaw ram. However only 2gb of ram is being used for some reason.
I read a bit about going into the bios and looking for a "memory remapping" setting but there was not one.
I also unchecked the box for max memory in msconfig > boot > advanced options.

Any suggestions would be great!

Okay so this problem happened slowly.

First I just recently got internet the day this happened.

Then my computer starts slowing down.

Then applications are not running, saying (null) and that they are not win32 compatible programs.

Then I can't access the task manager, it says it's been disabled by the administrator (Which is ********).

Then my logon screen changes to just a black screen with a plain prompt style logon screen.

Then when I log in it's just my desk top background with no icons or task bar, and I can't do anything, and most times it just immediately logs back off.

It does the same thing in safe mode. I can't do system recovery.

As soon as I logged in I smashed a bunch of keys and got the task manager to pop up and I've been running things through that. I downloaded HJT and have a log here.

This is very urgent, as I have some pretty pricey software on here. I'm a graphic design student with alot of homework and I'm really stressed out right now and would love to get this problem resolved.

Here is my log, please help me out:

Answer:Dektop shows up with no icons or task bar. Running things through Task manager.

I don't mean to bump this, I just would like to point out that i was only able to complete Step 1.

I removed all of those programs that I found, I had to use appwiz.cpl in task manager.

The other steps I couldn't perform because I can't use IE. My system also noted the files as corrupt or not compatible with Win 32.

And I need to use IE to do the online PC scan thing as well.

I'm really sorry, I hope I can still get some help.

I have had TwinHeadedEagle help this last week at this link: http://malwaretips.com/threads/fake...dont-even-have-google-chrome-installed.35660/

It worked to remove fake google chrome malware, but now I have in the task manager under processes tab, many "dllhost.exe.*32" with description "COM Surrogate" that is basically doing the same thing as the other one. I try and end their process, but they just keep coming back. I tried to download the zoek.exe, and even after I disabled my antivirus, it said my security settings wouldn't allow the download, so I can't run the scan!

Help! Attached is what it looks like in my task manager and also, what it looks like in volume mixer.

Hello,

Scan with Farbar Recovery Scan Tool

Please download Farbar Recovery Scan Tool and save it to your desktop.

Note: You need to run the version compatibale with your system. If you are not sure which version applies to your system download both of them and try to run them.
Only one of them will run on your system, that will be the right version.
Double-click to run it. When the tool opens click Yes to disclaimer.
Press Scan button.
It will make a log (FRST.txt) in the same directory the tool is run. Please attach it to your reply.
The first time the tool is run, it makes also another log (Addition.txt). Please attach it to your reply.

Hi there,
I'm fixing a computer for a local business and they said it has been running extremely slow recently. Scanned it over, removed the typical trojans/viruses but it was still running slow. Looked in task manager and found multiple instances of dllhost.exe *32 running. They each took a lot of CPU and memory up. Once I end one of the processes another one starts up. All antivirus is up to date and everything has been scanned but nothing is picking it up. What could it be?

I have been able to rightclick - end process all of them for a little bit. I monitored the processes and they were fine for about 10 minutes then all 20 instances of the dllhost.exe*32 popped up again and starting rising in memory and cpu it took up.

And yes I have tried multiple solutions to try and fix this so you will see weird programs in the log.
Thanks in advance

Using window 8. I'm just an average user with average knowledge w/ computers. There were 2, now 3, COM Surrogate Processes running in my Task Manager, they disappear after around 3 secs. I tried to delete them at this time, but restarting Task Manager will spawn them again and then disappear. When I right click any of them, they lead to Windows System32 Folder, file is dllhost.

Kids have been using the home PC for homework & we believe we caught a bad webpage (opened multiple times with showing any text). Since that time, multiple dllhost.exe *32 Processes open upon using the PC, causing to be VERY slow & eventually not work at all. Have made various attempts to find the virus to no avail, including a full McAfee scan. Downloaded FRST64.EXE to a USB drive on another PC (wouldn't let me download on the home PC because it said I didn't have administrator rights!!!). Used the USB drive copy to run the scan on the home PC. Attached are needed files. Please help us correct this issue!!

Hello, I've seen a few topics relating to my problem but wasn't sure if the steps are exactly the same for each person or if they are customized from problem to problem.

I'm running windows 7 and as other users have stated, my computer was running slowly, freezing up periodically and minimizing programs I was using. I checked task manager and at that time I saw many dllhost with description COM surrogate running, and trying to end the processes they just kept appearing again. At that time I had AVG as my antivirus and malwarebytes. Only AVG detected the file but it could not delete it. I then uninstalled AVG and changed my antivirus to Bitdefender and that seemed to have stifled the symptoms although I don't believe it ever fixed the problem. My computer was running smoothly for about a week and now I have a filename uirrvmzweu.exe with description google chrome. My computer symptoms are about the same as they were when the dllhost process was running. They both act very similar as far as I can see.

Any help would be much appreciated, thank you.

Answer:my task manager shows.....

wdfmgr.exe is part of Microsoft Windows media player 10 and above. This process decreases compatibility problems whilst the product is in use. This program is non-essential process to the running of the system, but should not be terminated unless suspected to be causing problems.

Don't worry about it Shazel!!

For the last few days I've been running some CPU intensive programs which I wrote. My laptop was getting really hot (70+C), so I decided to blow into the vent to clear the dust out. However all this did was clog the fan with dust and it stopped spinning, so I used a safety pin to hook the dust out. The fan started spinning and it blew a load of old dust out, and my laptop is now running in the low 40's.

However now task manager shows the CPU usage as 100%, but when I sort the processes by CPU time, nothing is using much of the processor, firefox sometimes jumps up to 50%, but it doesn't stay there for long.

Even when I boot into ubuntu, everything is still running really slowly.

Also, speedfan reports my CPU speed as 600mhz, sometimes it shows a few other values (1400, 1200, 1800 etc), I have two core2 duo 1.83 ghz processors, so I wasn't expecting to see 600mhz!

I don't think this is a virus, since it seems to be independent of the operating system, any ideas what could have happened?

For some reason my system (2.8GHz Pentium D Dual Core, 1 GB RAM, Dell XPS 400) just started getting stuck at 100% CPU load at all times. This occured on a restart after I re-located the machine to another house. I thought maybe something was physically messed up since it had been moved but the problem doesn't seem to occur when I boot to Safe Mode. So, that makes me think its a software issue. I tried to restore before the most recent MS update, but that didn't help. Anyone have any ideas?

I've recently reinstalled windows xp, which worked decently until I've installed some xp updates (for SP3). Bad decision. After installing them the CPU is always going to 100% use and my laptop shuts down 2 or 3 times a day because of this issue, even when I'm only running an application or two (so no reason for 100% usage).

I've repaired windows xp with the cd that came with, still same problem. Is there a solution to this or should I format and start clean again :(?

P.S. My laptop is 4 years old, so I don't know how many shutdowns my CPU can actually take before it melts

I have Win XP Home SP1.

When I run Quattro Pro 6.0 (I've had this for many years, from Win 3.1 through Win 95 and Win 98; it's an excellent spreadsheet. I usually use Excel, but I have a few Quatro Pro macro based spreadsheets that I never converted.) the Task manager shows I have over 50% performance. (Usually it's about 1-3%) What bothers me is that the temperature readings go up drastically in this case, and I'm afraid of frying something. I should point out this happens as soon as I load Quattro Pro and let it sit there, without it doing anything.

Should I be worried? I don't know if this has been the behavior since I got my new PC, since I never checked it until lately (I've been using my new PC with Win XP for about 7 months), when I got a temperature monitor alert that "The system temperature has exceeded its recommended maximum temperature". (It returned to the recommended temperature range a few seconds later.)

What can cause this kind of behavior?

in the "performance" (middle tab) window BUT, the computer runs just fine. It also shows the "Kernel" using 40 to 60% of the 100% CPU usage.

Fiddling with it, I accidentally got just the performance window at 100%. Discovered that by double left clicking on the window, I got all the Task Mgr back and the CPU usage appeared normal.

The next time I restared my computer, Task Manager showed 100% usage again but the computer runs still runs OK.

Is there a way to reinstall Task Manager or does anyone have a fix?

Hello and thank you in advance.

I discovered this bug by a call from a relative asking if I sent an email to him and of course I did not. When I got home from work my inbox was full of email return notices from dead email addresses that I still have in my contact list. I didn?t think these things could send email if you are using cloud mail but is has sent mail to all my contacts. . I ran McAffee and Defender and no problems showed up. The next thing it did was send up a pop up telling me I needed to reboot and I had not rebooted for 5 days. Like a dummy I rebooted. I brought up task manager to see what processes were on the list and saw that there was nothing on the list. It has also removed labels from the tabs and buttons. The McAffee Center has no labels on it thus rendering it useless. Of course I have lost administrative control.

I am running Windows 7 and I can boot to safe mode. So as you can see I really need help.

Task manager performance tab says that my CPU is 100% overloaded. But when I open 'processes' tab and rank the processes by CPU usage, the percents don't add to 100%. For god's sake, they don't even add to 20%. On the other hand, in XP they always add to hundred percent.

Jeez, Windows 7 is such a downgrade from XP

Hi
so as the title states my pc currently uses 72% of my 4GB RAM.
it says that its got 79 processes running , 30-45 CPU Usage and that leads to 2.87GB Ram usage at the moment.
WHAT ... THE ...?????
My highest current ram user is Facebook Messenger .exe *32 , 168k
svchost.exe 162k
explorer 116k
and the rest are chrome with 12 processes ranging from 2500 to 113k

What information do you need for diagnosing this ... issue ... and what should i do ?
I currently use avast prime and i doubt any virus could have got in since i dont go on any "fishy" websites.

Looking forward to solutions
Thank you.

My computer has slowed considerably lately, The task manager is showing usually about 55 or 60 processes happening at the same time, I don't know which to keep and which to delete(or how)some say network, of system network. But most just have my name, being the com. Administrator.
I know there's a way to stop these processes permanently and speed up my computer. I've defragmented and cleaned the hard drive, can you help me stop these background programs from running. Please help. thanks Alot

Answer:Task Manager shows 50-70 Processes. Too Much!? Help

Click Start
Click "Run"
Type "msconfig.exe"
Click the "Startup" tab
Check off the boxes of certain programs that look familiar to you that you don't want running during startup. Examples would be AIM, Itunes, etc.

Also, you can usually end all processes in the task manager that include your specific User Name. The only one you shouldn't end is explorer.exe (it's the program that displays your desktop)

If it says LOCAL SERVICE, NETWORK SERVICE, or SYSTEM next to it, Don't end it.

Finally, a computer usually does contain a lot of processes. My computer, right now, is running 61 processes. There are a lot more reasons for why your computer could be running slow besides the processes.

Hello everyone, I am in need of help.
I feel bad my first post has to be a negative one haha.
So I noticed in the past couple of days, when I use ctrl+alt+delete
the task manager icon is displayed in the system tray, but I cannot get it to open to see the processes. I tried right clicking on the icon and right clicking on the system tray and clicking task manager to see if it would work.
Any suggestions on how to resolve this issue?

People tell me that 106 processes means something is wrong. Only two or three show numbers (low numbers) under the column "CPU". I have MANY applications installed in my system.

Does 106 processes still mean there's a problem even if I have MANY applications? The system doesn't run slow; it only starts up slow.

I use a SONY VAIO AR250G with XP SP2.

Usually one listing will be 50,000k and the other 2,000k. why would this be? it does not happen with firefox or any other program. Hi , I have been in this forum last month as I was having some problems with my toshiba laptop, it was sent to to the service center and it is now back and I started it using yesterday.
After I did a CLEAN INSTALL as told in this forum , My is working great.
It looks light, loads quick and is quite fast.
Now When I was looking into TASK MANAGER today , I noticed something strange,
I had FIRE FOX open and CHROME too,
Fire fox was 1 service in task manager while chrome was 12 , It looked strange so I ended one process and whole chrome browser shut down, then I re opened it and it again shows multiple services, all using MEMORY too.

Here is the picture when chrome is not opened

and then here is the one when I opened chrome,

Please tell me is this a thing to worry ???
How can I overcome this problem

Answer:Task Manager Shows 12 Process for CHROME

This is a "feature" of Chrome - Each module in Chrome runs as a separate process, so shows up as a unique PID in Task Manager. This includes each Tab that is open, and each Add-on. It is designed this way for stability - supposedly a fault in one process will not "take Down" the whole program.

Its something that can look odd but it's basically a quirk of programming style

I can only assume that either you closed the main process or the system is set-up by chrome to assume that if a user closes one process they wish to close all

Brand new here. I have a complex problem. I started having trouble with my text to speech program playing in Win 8.1 - as the audio started breaking up when played. When trying to resolve this I noticed that task manager showed the HD was running at near 100% most of the time. I suspected that the HD was causing the audio problem with text to speech - which is the only audio problem I have. All other audio plays back normally. I tried all the HD fixes I could find online like disabling services like SuperFetch and windows search. Nothing has worked. I have also tried command prompts to test HD. All say its ok. I did a complete system restore and wiped the HD back to win 8. HD is not maxed with almost no programs installed. However, when Windows Update is running again it is running at 100% and the system is very slow. Windows update failed and said I need to install Windows Update software. I did that but there was a lot of updates since I had done a reinstall I got failure messages and Windows Update took 8 hours to install. BIG QUESTION. Could my HD be failing or is win 8 corrupt? I have refreshed the system a number times. Nothing has worked.

I have a Toshiba Satellite C855-S5350 Laptop. 2.4 processor 640gb HD, 6gb ram.
TIA

If you wish, you can try running the commands below from Admin command prompt:

In addition, download: CrystalDiskInfo.V6.2.0 and run it to see if you have any bad sectors on the HD.

Hi,

Here is the problem, in the last few months two of my PCs, one a new laptop (Compaq with Windows 7) the other a 2 year old desktop (HP Intel Core Duo with XP64) are both being raided it seems by a virus although AVIRA detects none.

What happens is if a IE window it left open after about 6 hours it starts growing in RAM use. So I could be 40 megs to start and a day later its 250 megs. In fact on XP64 system with 5 gigs of RAM have seen one grow to 3.5 gigs of ram when it started at 25 megs. Of course the system starts slowing down and I go to Task Manager and see the problem, also sometimes it starts using the hard disk thrashing it and slowing the system down. The solution is to kill the IE windows, but often that does not do it. As the image (below) shows two IE windows in Task Manager using about 270 megs, even though I closed all IE windows and IE bottom tab in W7 confirms there are no IE windows open.

What I guess is going on is a virus is taking over the PC for remote computing power, even though I have never agreed to so that.

I think I may have once used a P2P so I could share a big file, but do not see one on either of teh two PCs

I am on the Internet (DSL) all the time.

Anyone experience this of know a solution? I end up using Task manager to kill the IE windows and sometimes even have to reboot to get back my resources.

I run XP SP3 32-bit version 2002

- My task manager shows two explorer.exe tasks;

- One shows a fairly-constant memory usage of 42,000 KB, using CPUs 01 and 02;

- The other one fluctuates up and down between 80,000 KB and 190,000 KB, using a multiplicity of CPUs from low (02) to mid (49, 52) double-digits;

- Is this normal? If not, what can be done to solve this?

- If it's of any help, I ran HijackThis scan and I have a .log file available with the results, which I I'll go ahead and copy & paste below. I don't dare erase anything without guidance.

On the processes tab make sure that 'Show processes from all users has been selected'.

You can also download and run Process Explorer from Microsoft which gives a more detailed view of process activity.

Your memory usage, taken together with the CPU activity graphs and the number of processes running, is suggestive of a malware problem.  I would advise that you download and run Malwarebytes following this tutorial.

Good morning everyone, I was just looking at my Task Manager, and noticed in the list of processes shown, there are something like 6 or 7 entries of "drwtsn32.exe" (or something similar) shown as running. Can someone explain to me why this is occurring and what I can do to resolve this issue?I do not believe this "Dr. Watson" program (although it is legitimate) should be even showing up in my Task Manager...much less 6 or 7 times. I don't recall having even activated this program.*What caused me to check Task Manager was I seemed to notice my system taking just a little too long to perform certain simple, routine things, such as, bringing up the password entry box so I can disable the File/Folder Lock feature I have within my AV program. (System specs shown in signature line).Scans with my AV, MBAM Pro & SAS are clean.* UPDATE: I HAVE GONE AHEAD AND ENDED EACH OF THE "DR. WATSON" PROCESSES PREVIOUSLY MENTIONED & REBOOTED MY COMPUTER. THIS SEEMS TO HAVE REMEDIED THE ISSUE I INITIALLY REPORTED *Thank you for your time and review of my post!

Hi Malki,

There are running some background processes and they need CPU usage that?s normal. Antivirus runs in background as other tools as well. As far as I know after recovery installation the defragmentation tool also runs in background.

Interesting to know would be what problem you have. I mean usually the CPU usage it?s not important if you can do everything and computer works properly.

Do you have any problems?

When I doubled click the icon the sharepod.exe will show in the task manager and the cpu percent next to it goes to 99 everytime but the program does not start.  This continues until I end the process.  The day before it worked fine.  Everytime, before, when I start this program I have to click a menu that will allow the program to run but this has not caused programs.  I was going to uninstall and reinstall  and found it's not listed in the remove programs menu so I just deleted it and downloaded it again but the same thing happens. I didn't list too much info about my computer but if it'll help I'll try to figure that stuff out.  Update: I've tried re-installing and the same problem.  I removed I tunes cause maybe that's causing something but no better.  I ran another program that asks for permission to run everytime and doesn't show in the installed program menu and that program  would start as usual.

Since a few months every week or two Google Chrome starts taking 100% CPU usage and I need to close and re open it and it will be ok for another 1-2 weeks.

In Task Manager it shows about 250 processes, but the list shows much less, what processes is it not showing? Is it the services on the other tab?

Even with Chrome closed it showed 170 processes (I probably keep around 80 tabs opened in Chrome), I was sure I had much less than that before when Chrome is closed.

How can I find out what these 170 processes are?

Also, why has Chrome started using 100% CPU usage after being opened for a while? It's either a bug in an update or because I have more tabs than before, or tabs/websites in particular that are using CPU usage.

Even when Chrome is using 100% CPU, no one tab is using 100%, it's many tabs all using a bit that add up to 100%, but some tabs are worst than others. Even now with Chrome freshly restarted I have 20-30% CPU usage which is still high.

Thanks

Answer:Task Manager says 250 processes running but list shows less

Have you enabled viewing of all processes in Taskman, bottom left checkbox?

What PC hardware specs?

High CPU% from a browser isn't something I've seen, once a page/tab has loaded there should be close to 0% unless the page contains some active component like rotating ads, news ticker, etc.

Hi There.  I am new to this forum, so I hope this is the correct place to post this question.  If not, I apologize.   I have had some recent "issues" with my laptop, some that will definitely belong in other forums on this site, but this is one I think belongs here and couldn't find any other information doing a "search".As the subject states, if I open up Windows Task Manager, and click on Processes; in the lower left hand corner, it seems to currently go from showing that 94 or 95 (actually, right now it has changed to 91 and I have done nothing different since starting this thread) processes are running while I only count 32 or 33 (it changes as I look at the screen) listed in the window that lists them all.  I do not really understand computers, and have to wonder if these 90+ processes are slowing things down, and would love to know what I can permanently turn off from automatically running to help boost performance.  I am going to "snip" a shot of the Task Manager window showing this so you can see what I mean.  Or at least I am going to try to since there is a button that says "Insert Image".    Now, it says 97 processes are running, just from selecting the "snipping" tool.  See, I really don't know what I am doing. And now I see that clicking the "insert image" button just puts img in brackets with the cursor blinking in between so I have no idea how ... Hi all,

I use a nostromo n52 speedpad with gaming (and sad to say its hard to go back to gaming without it). I installed the latest drivers (vista x64 are the most up to date ones) and upon installation it works like a champ. After a shutdown/reboot however, upon re-entering windows, I get a popup asking for permission for the program to run/make changes, hit yes and nothing happens.

The task manager shows it is running (nost_LM.exe *32 for some reason and not the 64 bit version...), but it never shows up in my program listings, and I cannot bring up either the loadout manager or the configuration manager windows.

Is there a way to get these things to show up? Belkin corp. is kind of sketchy on driver releases, but I figured I would check here, maybe someone knows a workaround or something.

I am running RC 7100 x64 with Kaspersky Anti Virus

Thanks!

Edit:
Upon uninstalling, I am given a message that a reboot is required because some things could not be removed without one. when the process finishes, I am able to bring up the loadout manager and configuration manager windows like normal.

Answer:Nostromo game pad software shows in task manager...

Found out how to get it to work for now.

Turning off user account control allows the program to work. For some reason even if it is set to low it stops the program from performing even if you hit yes to allow it.

Does anyone know of a way to disable UAC for specific programs only? I would like to keep it on, but still allow my Nostromo software to run without restrictions from it.

My laptop runs slower than usual and is creating new folders in weird places. I did notice task manager processes for chrome and did an online search to find a few connected to fake processes like
programdata\ntuser.pol and programdata\Roaming and windows\XSxS.

I ran MGlogs and attached the zip that was one my desktop after it completed.

Answer:Task Manager Shows Fake Chrome Processes

Can you upload all of the other requested logs please?

I will post to procedures for your reference.

Okay - two hours later.. after what was likely the mangling of my Registry due to thinking this was a problem with the specific shortcut that was doing it. (i removed all entries with "razer" in them and if they arent all reinstalled by razer i may be in trouble).

Anyhow, to be clear... I have 4 entries as of current. Java Update Scheduler, Razer Synapse, Realtek HD Audio Manager, Switchblade Framework Helper. (the razer ones I am in the process of learning how to make a batch file, convert it to .exe, and change the icon to match the razer one so i can run them on my own and remove it from startup) However im getting off-topic.

Basically beyond the four items I just named (at some point this happened and i dont know whats causing it) no matter what I add to startup, it adds 2x of the item. Two razer apps that go with the keyboard were showing doubles which drove me nuts. I finally found out after tons of messing around that it wasnt them and even if i add an empty notepad file to startup, it displays two of it as well.

Any ideas?

Thanks guys. A lot of VERY smart guys here and ive learned SO much. Hopefully one day i'll be paying it forward all the same.

EDIT ---- one more ? instead of making a new thread i figured id cram it in here since it "is" the same general thingy. I have an accessory display off to the right of my main. Answer:Weird issue with task manager (startup tab shows 2x all)

bedtime bump. Hope someone out there can help me out. I'll have a conniption if I have to reformat my PC. It doesnt make ANY sense.

Could it be permissions related? Related to a folder I deleted in programdata or appdata? (courtesy of the mess that is windows 8.1 I did alot of house cleaning as you can imagine)

A service or task even? Id like to think a software engineer or system admin would be able to hypothesize as to what the few things are that can cause a file to essentially duplicate itself. (if i didnt mention, both instances of the shortcut that pop up in startup originate at the same file and have identical data)

Not sure what this is about, everything was fine then Chrome and other programs started locking up. When I rebooted, the boot process was slow, and everything else was too, and kept locking up. I suspected (but may be wrong) that it had something to do with a third party program that I had just installed called ClassicShell on Windows 10. I wasn't too impressed with it so I uninstalled it. When I tried to uninstall Chrome in order to reinstall it, it kept saying I had to close the Chrome window even though Chrome was closed. I went into the Task Manager and saw Chrome listed several times. I closed all those, uninstalled and reinstalled Chrome, and rebooted. Eventually things seemed to return to normal, but when I look at Task Manager, it still shows Chrome is loaded several times over (see the attached snip).

Answer:Task Manager shows Chrome running 7 or 8 times.

Hi, this is normal, it is by design, chrome loads separate processes for web apps and plugins from the browser process so if a plugin fails or web app the browser is not taken down... much more complicated then this, still you should get the idea.

You can view what these processes are in chrome click on the three bars (far right corner) go to more tools and click on task manager, here you can see the chrome processes detailed. Happens on all machines.

Hi guys,

I've got this problem 2 days ago where my PC started slowing down and i've been getting random BSODs mainly "Special Pools Detected etc & Memory Management" When i start up the PC its slow and it takes alot longer to just open even a folder. I've tried searching for such problems and i've tried almost everything i know to try and fix this but i guess i'm still in-experienced when it comes to problems like this.

It happened 2 days ago after i played an online game i got a BSOD and couldn't remember what it was. So i restarted and the problem started. The most recent hardware change was that i changed my RAM from 4gb to 8gb and nothing else. I did not install any new programs recently. So initially i thought it might be the RAM causing this problem so i changed it back to the ones i had previously. Here are the specs of my PC.

Processor : Intel® Core™2 Duo CPU E7500 @2.93GHz 2.93Ghz
Installed Memory (RAM) : 4.00GB (I have 2x 4GB Rams from Cosair that i got from my friend and it was working fine on his computers so i do not know if its the Rams)
System Type : 64-bit Operating System
Windows 7 Home Premium
Service Pack 1

Anyway i've scanned the PC using Avira, Spybot & Avast and there were 0 findings so i hope i am right to assume that my computer has not been infected with malware/spyware. But still in the task manager, the CPU Usage % and Memory Usage shoots up whenever i do any sort of action, eg. Refresh on... Read more

I leave my Win7 pro machine running from 8am to about midnight every day and when it's off, it was done so by Start->Sleep (for quick boot time). Sometimes I'll have cause to go into the task manager and despite having no visible CMD windows or explorer windows (or perhaps just one), I'll see anything from 2 to 10 explorers, maybe 5 cmd.exe instances and a similar number of conhost.exe instances.

I've done a full restart this morning and gone through most of the programs I use during the day and seen that none of them open such a weird bunch of mystery unknown processes.

When it does happen, I don't go into the task manager because I've noticed any performance hit or anything, I just wanted to kill a specific task (or just check it's not there) and that's when I spot the extras. Killing each explorer instance with "end process" causes none of my programs to complain, so I don't know how they got there. Also, they are active, they've got some CPU Time racked up. Same deal when closing the cmd/conhosts, nothing complains "hey you closed my cmd!".

If I right-click on any of the cmd/conhost/windows processes and choose "open file location", it always takes me to C:\Windows so that's no help at all.

I'm trying to find out (a) who's opening them, and (2) what they're doing and where they're doing it.

In case anyone thinks I might be bot-infested, I'm behind two firewalls, have avast and spybot running, and have run malware bytes scan ... Read more

I a couple of odd behaviors from my core i5 750 on ASUS P7P55D Pro.

Core 2 is often running about 10 - 20% higher than all the others according to Core Temp even at idle. According to Windows Task Manager the CPU is only running at minimal % and no programs are showing as dominate (all under 1% usage).

Is this normal? Do I have something funny running in the background?

I've run Microsoft Security Essentials and also Malwarebytes and nothing shows up.

Answer:Core temp showing CPU at 30 - 50% but Task Manager Shows 8%

I notice Core Temp is not always accurate on my laptop. I'd try another app like CPUID to compare.

Hello.
I have a recent problem in that C:\windows\system32\cmd.exe shows up in Task manager when I boot the system. Sometimes it uses up all the cpu and sometimes not and it will let itself be removed from the task manager.
I have done an in depth spyware scan with PC Tools SpyWare Doctor and with SuperAnti Spyware and removed all that they found. I have also used the Kaspersky online scanner and removed the four things it found (mostly software that I had not yet installed found on the net) and one entry in the symantec quarentine folder. Symantec corporate V9.0.0.338 found nothing.

Hey everyone,

I have recently been having some problems with my desktop running Windows XP service pack 2.

No matter what I run, whether it be Word, Firefox, A media player, or anything of the sort my computer takes forever to get it up and running and always shows in the task manager that 100% of the computer is being used. For example, it took me about 3 and a half minutes to open this Firefox application to type this problem in.

Another issue is that Windows XP is taking forever to boot up. Usually around 6-7 minutes to get to the login screen.

Finally, once I log in, Windows shows that I have my Firewall turned off (with its red x in the taskbar) but then I open Windows Security Center and it is turned on.

I have HijackThis logs available and can run other tests as well. I have used programs such as KillBox before too so feel free to lay it on me.

Thanks for your help.

Answer:Computer runs incredibely slow and task manager always shows 100%

The error has been corrected by myself. Thank you to anyone who took the time to read this.

Apparently for some reason my Primary IDE Channel got switched to PIO mode instead of DMA. I am not sure why, but the issue seems to be solved.

This thread should be closed and moved to the proper area.

I run XP SP3 32-bit version 2002- My task manager shows two explorer.exe tasks, right from the time I start up my laptop; it's doing this all the time;- One task shows a fairly-constant memory usage of 42,000KB, using CPUs 01 and 02;- The other task's memory usage fluctuates up and down between 80,000KB and 190,000KB, using a multiplicity of CPUs from low (02) to mid (49, 52, etc.) double-digits;- Is this normal? Hi There,
Unfortunately I don't have lots of background computer knowledge and while running Windows 7 I have issues with the computer being super slow as well as extremely slow and intermittent Internet service. I noticed that when I open Task Manager there are multiple Internet Explorer windows running. I have run Microsoft Security Essentials scans every night and a full scan in Microsoft Safety Scanner and while these do usually find a "severe threat" and remove it the problem has not been solved after over a week of trying.
Any help would be greatly appreciated and I apologize in advance for any extra explaining you may have to do for me.
Thank you,
Melanie

I tried to find info on this. One suggestion was to go into the Macromed folder, open the file mms.cfg with notepad and add the line ProtectedMode=0. I tried and it won't allow me to make any changes this way. I wanted to know if I should make the change and if so, how. (see attached screenshot of Task Manager). I am running Windows 7 - 64 bit as the OS. I use Firefox as a Web browser.

HI there,

PRECEDING PROBLEMS, MAYBE USEFUL, MAYBE NOT:

For the last month I've had a bewildering laundry list of problems with my computer. Firefox 37.0.1 started using superhigh CPU to open and load pages. Then Thunderbird and Avast! began to do the same when connecting to the internet for downloads/updates. Then my printer ditto. When printing, I can't do anything else. (It's Brother MFC 4500+, an ancient workhorse that's never given me a day's trouble.)

Then my mouse went on the fritz; swapped out to another mouse and got the same problem---the pointer freezes and restarts intermittently, then freezes altogether. I can get it working again by unplugging the USB and plugging it in again, but the fix is temporary, maybe hours, maybe seconds. Every now and then I get a Windows message in the taskbar tray that "something has happened" and the system can't recognize my USB device.

The problems didn't happen all at once, but rather in the sequence that I've noted. I've run different antivirus and malware and rootkit scans repeatedly, but all come up clean. FWIW, I run good computer utilities every week or so, so the system is squeaky clean that way. I've been limping along.

Hello,

I'm having an issue with my PC in which the PC runs extremely slow. I was going over all running programs in task manager and noticed that iexplore.exe was running even when I had internet explorer closed. This also took about 60% of my CPU. So my original thought was that I had an issue with Viruses and Malware. I tried shutting down the iexplore.exe and it wont close out. I have provided all that was asked, so if anyone can help me, I'd greatly appreciate it!

Hi Napkin_LoL My name is Aura and I'll be assisting you with your malware issue. Since we'll be working together, you can call me Aura or Yoan, which is my real name, it's up to you! Now that we've broke the ice, I'll just ask you a few things during the time we'll be working together to clean your system and get it back to an operational state. As you'll notice, the logs we are asking for here are quite lenghty, so it's normal for me to not reply exactly after you post them. This is because I need some time to analyse them and then act accordingly. However, I'll always reply within 24 hours, 48 hours at most if something unexpected happensAs long as I'm assisting you on BleepingComputer, in this thread, I'll ask you to not seek assistance anywhere else for any issue related to the system we are working on. If you have an issue, question, etc. about your computer, please ask it in this thread and I'll assist youThe same principle applies to any modifications you make to your system, I would like you to ask me before you do any manipulations that aren't in the instructions I posted. I've recently had a number of instances of my computer with the disc light constantly on. Programs, especially Firefox, will lock up and trying to terminate them using Task Manager won't work (I get Program Not Responding but clicking End Now does nothing and the message won't clear).
Up to now I have managed to clear it, though I don't know how - sometimes it appears to recover after running AVAST at boot time. That hasn't helped this time, I've had to switch to Chrome to type this help request.
I did however notice 4 instances of Chrome.exe and 7 instances of SVChost.exe in the processes list of Task Manager. CPU usage under the Performance tab is minimal. Any ideas what might be happening?
Thanks.

WinXP Home SP3. Intel Core 2 [email protected], 3GB RAM (as reported by XP, I think there's 4GB).

Hello,

Upon start up only my wallpaper shows. I cannot see the welcoming screen at all, just black. There are no icons, no task bar, no start menu, nothing, just a blank screen other than my wallpaper. I cannot right click the desktop either. My mouse is non-existent.

Ctr alt delete causes my screen to also go black. I press the down arrow to where i think the task manager is and i press enter. The black screen than disappears and i am back on my wallpaper. I know the task manager popped up but i just can't see it.

I have ventrilo and my ventrilo server on startup ( like i always do ) and when i alt tab to what i think is the ventrilo window and press enter, i hear the confirmation that i entered my server.

This is extremely depressing, having just "upgraded" to windows 7 only to run smack into a problem.

Windows 7 Ultimate 32bit
4b ram, 3.25gb use able
Ati radeon 4870
Intel Core 2 quad @ 2.66ghz 2.67ghz

Any help is extremely appreciated. Thank you

Answer:On startup, only wallpaper shows, no icons. Task Manager doesn't work.

WOW, after a moment of rage, i shook my mouse. HARD. It appeared from the side of my screen, and i realized that somehow, my other monitor (witch i assumed was disabled; it was off) was set to my main!

I right clicked, screen resolution and fixed it. WOOO!

Hello, this morning I was checking all the things on my computer just to clean up and I found two "COM Surrogate" processes running. I googled it and another name for it is, dllhost.exe 32 or something of the sort, I'm sure you may already know. I've scanned with Malwarebytes twice now, one regular scan, and now a scan with the rootkit search part enabled.

Please help, thanks!!

The problem I am experiencing appears to occur when I connect my DSL modem (without going onto the Internet). I opened Windows Task Manager and can watch as the number of processes increases from around 70 to 95 or so. I am observing multiple processes that show the user name as “BLANK”. Some use up to around 900,000K Memory (Private Working Set) according to Task Manager. These processes (and there may be up to 8 or more instances of each - conhost.exe seems to have the most instances listed), show up in Task Manager with the following names:

I have a brand new laptop (2 weeks old) that randomly freezes for as long as a minute in which nothing works. I have 8gb of ram and a 4th gen Intel processor so I can't imagine why this would happen. At first I was afraid of malware/spyware and was helped out on another forum in which it was determined my machine should be clean. They have directed me here now. The computer is virtually empty. I haven't transferred any of my old files from my previous pc over.

The freezing happens randomly, generally while online. Chrome will indicate that it's waiting for the cache. It is not however specific to Chrome, happens with firefox and IE too. Sometimes I will be in Microsoft Word and it will freeze. We did hard disk checks and everything showed fine.

Any help you can offer is appreciated. Thanks so much in advance!

Hi,

My computer is having lagging issues and showing signs of possible infection. I am a Malwarebytes user, and so far the scans have been clean. That said, I have seen that the computer is making some outgoing requests that Malwarebytes is stopping, so I suspect there is something that has made it onto my hard drive.

I've attached the FRST and Addition scan reports from the Farbar Recovery Tool. Please let me know if you need any other information.

I appreciate any help you could give...thanks so much!

My comp is acting up

I cant access task manager via cnt alt delete.

It says "login process has failed to create the sercurity options dialouge"

when i insert a usb flash or external HDD the folders are shown only as shortcuts rather then the actual folders. when i click on the shortcuts it eventually opens the folder in a window & also opens cmd window. odd?

when you try to click on remove usb safly it always says its busy & being used by another program. So frustrating.

this happened when inserting a usb flash into my comp after taking it from my laptop set on transfering a file.

Would a system restore help? im currently scanning with a malawarebytes.

please advise. thanks

Sorry that you are having so many problems. Perhaps we can help
I had to read your post carefully looking for any clues that I could find.
You mentioned malwarebytes, make sure that you also make a full and updated scan with your anti virus.

You mentioned that a usb is always busy. Lets try a clean boot to diagnose
How to troubleshoot a problem by performing a clean boot in Windows Vista or in Windows 7

If both scans, malwarebytes and antivirus come up clean try the system restore. Go back about 4 or 5 days before the problem began.

About a year ago, I noticed that my computer was running slow (both online and off) and that the explorer.exe process listed in the Windows Task Manager was usually running very high. Windows Explorer seemed to crash a lot as well. A few months ago, I attempted to install Kaspersky Internet Security 7.0 on my computer and before the install completed a warning window popped up saying something like 'there is already another instance of Kaspersky running' (which was not the case since this was the first time I had ever attempted to install Kaspersky software) and the install failed. When I rebooted my computer, I got the blue screen of death for a few seconds and then Windows booted with a message saying that Windows had recovered from a serious problem. Since recovering from whatever happened after the failed Kaspersky install, my computer is slower than ever and the Task Manager still shows a high CPU usage even though the System Idle Process is high and there isn't any processes listed that are using much CPU time at all.

I just scanned my system with the latest updated versions of AdAware, Spybot S&D, SuperAntiSpyware, and Avira AntiVir. All of them found nothing. I then cleaned my computer with CCleaner and ran HijackThis.

Here is the log:

Hi guys,

I tried to set "No paging file" in the advanced menu of system settings (Windows Vista 32-bit). I rebooted the PC. However the Performance tab of Windows Task Manager shows:

Page File: 2314M / 3475M

Why is this so? I wanted to set "no paging file" because my idea was to setup a RAMdisk and use that for the paging file.

Thanks in advance for any advice...

Answer:"No paging file" set but still shows up in Task Manager

Hi,

Nice idea, but what order are you doing thing in? RAM first & no page file second? Set page file third?

Do you have enough RAM?

Please remember RAM is volatile too, a HDD isn't. The system will need to build the page file a fresh each boot! Good or bad - not sure?

Have you done this before?

I recently built a new system, fourth one for me, running Windows XP SP2 on a Core 2 Quad Core Processor. After the build was done, I did see in Windows Task Manager it showing all four cores. A week later, the Task Manager only shows one cpu. I check the view for the processors and it only gives me the option of one graph per cpu, which is greyed out. There are no other options to choose. I ran Intel's CPU Identification Utility and it still shows four cores as does the post at startup. Any ideas as to what is causing this and what can be done to fix it?

Answer:Windows Task Manager only shows 1 CPU for Core 2 Quad Core

I have a quad (QX6700) - in Task Manager I get the option of selecting one graph per cpu and also one graph, all cpu's - both options are available and working.

There should be 1 CPU Usage column and 4 individual columns for CPU Usage History under the Task Manager>Performance - what do you have?

What motherboard is it?

Hi seem something got into my computer!!!
Noticed yesterday my Norton’s popup said it caused an error and had to close. I rebooted the computer and ran a scan, came up fine? I notice my pointer would blink back and forth to the hourglass. I opened my task manager and it seems to be switching with the CSRSS.EXE & N360.EXE (CPU) counter jumping up and down, FAST! Never saw anything like it before, usually what just system idle, maybe Firefox??? I tried running Norton's again, I really forget if it crashed or didn't do anything. Tried the standard online virus scans and ran into all kinds of troubles. Some seem to start to load and then the popup window disappeared? Think it was Kasp., when I reloaded it, it ran and found nothing! Others froze or crashed, restarted the computer, without finishing. It seems to have gotten worse, the last few time I looked at the Task Manager and I see

CSRSS.exe       KSS.EXE       N360.EXE       AVG***.exe

All these (CPU) counts are jumping up and down I have never seen my task manager list jumping so much! It seems so much worse now that I tried all these scans, even with the computer freezing and crashing now. I rebooted in safe mode and came right here. You help me once so long ago and hope you can again! One thing, now when I look at the Task Manager, all those virus program names are gone, list is very short.  Plus (C... Read more

Answer:virus chk, no run! Task Manager show CSRSS.EXE & Virus prgs crazy switching??

Are you really surprised? You have kaspersky, norton, and AVG installed. There I was thinking that I like a bit of tin foil head gear. The executable CSRSS.exe as you typed it has reputation for being exploited, and although it should be a legit bit of XP, it could also be a trojan according to some of the webz? This support article from Micro$oft may be more practical/applicable use to you, and they suggest that it's caused by a corrupt user profile. The suggested remedy is to delete your user account after backing up stuff, and then restart followed by re-creating your user account.

Being a Linux user I'd have to chip in as to why don't you try a linux live DVD/USB, there is no need to make changes to your hard drive or computer with the possible exception of changing the BIOS boot order. If you cannot afford a hardware/software upgrade then just boot into free linux, and try it out. There is no obligation to buy, and little/no risk of damage. Hello, i'm new to this site, so if i say something stupid please be understanding.
(i'm running vista to clarify)

I had a while ago gotten a virus which would play sounds randomly, and i was able to temporarily fix it by going to task manager and killing the process. after a while the virus stopped bugging me (i guess the antivirus software caught the culprit.)

recently i downloaded an installer, and it happened again. this time i hit ctrl alt del, and task manager had been removed from the list. i tried accessing it through control panel and it told me it had been blocked by the administrator (me) i then looked up how to re-enable it, and went to run REGEDIT and that was blocked too. i've tried several scripts to re-enable regedit, all to no avail.

whenever the sound stops playing i get a message saying:
"Host Process for Windows Services stopped working and was closed

A problem caused the application to stop working correctly. Windows will notify you if a solution is available."

i also found these 2 files in system configuration: BtwSrv (by Microsoft Corporation) and fastnetsrv Service (by Sigma Designs Inc)

I googled the second one, and found it to be a virus (yayy google!)
I am unsure about how to remove these, and i also found several remote applications which i would like to disable... help would be appreciated

McAfee identified a virus and removed it, however it keeps re-appearing
