Win8.1 will fire unload and load event to the WPF application when we close and reconnect to this machine using RDC from win7 or other OS.

Question: Win8.1 will fire unload and load event to the WPF application when we close and reconnect to this machine using RDC from win7 or other OS.

This is a strange issue only in Win8.1.

As we all known, if there is a running application in a machine, there should not be any other behavior against the application when we connect/disconnect/reconnect to this machine by Remote Desktop Connection. However, we found that Win8.1 will
fire unload and load events to the WPF application when we close and reconnect to the machine using RDC. And this is an unwanted behavior which may cause error. Here are the stable reproduce steps:

1. Write a WPF application which contains a button and handles the unload and load events of this button.
2. Using RDC to connect to a Win8.1 from Win7 for example.
3. In the remote desktop, run this WPF app.(a load event will be recorded in a.txt).
4. Close the RDC by clicking the 'x'.
5. Connect to this Win8.1 again.
6. You will see the unload and load events have been fired.

If the WPF app runs in Win7 or Win server 2008, those events will not be fired.

So, I think it is a unwanted behavior in Win8.1. Is that a bug in Win8.1 RDP? Or is that a new feature? I'm looking forward the answer.

Thanks,

Peng

Preferred Solution: Win8.1 will fire unload and load event to the WPF application when we close and reconnect to this machine using RDC from win7 or other OS.

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Hi Sophia,
I saw a thread about this matter from about a year ago - (https://social.technet.microsoft.com/Forums/windows/en-US/3b3f1ccf-ec44-43c5-a410-21be3717bdcf/win81-will-fire-unload-and-load-event-to-the-wpf-application-when-we-close-and-reconnect-to-this?forum=w8itproappcompat),
that you tried to help.
I have the same issue, my wpf application loads my view constructor every time i connect from a remote computer. since i have resources used by the old view my app crashes.
i wanted to know if a solution to this problem was found.

Thanks

I used Slovaks code to capture email close events to preform some checks and ask me some questions before the close completes. Sometimes when I close the email and I set the "Cancel" to True, the close event continues to fire. Sometimes it will eventually close and sometimes it keeps on cycling.

Here is the close event code:

Private Sub m_objMail_Close(Cancel As Boolean)
On Error Resume Next
If blnSkipClose <> True Then
With m_objMail
If .Subject = "" Then
If MsgBox("Subject line is blank. Coninue closing?", vbYesNo, "Blank Subject") = vbNo Then
Cancel = True
End If
End If
If .Categories = "" Then
If MsgBox("No category assigned. Assign category?", vbYesNo, "No category") = vbYes Then
.ShowCategoriesDialog
.Save
End If
End If
If .FlagStatus = olNoFlag And m_objMail.FlagIcon = olNoFlagIcon Then
If MsgBox("No reminder set. Coninue closing?", vbYesNo, "No reminder") = vbNo Then
Cancel = True
End If
End If
End With
End If
If Cancel = False Then
basOutlInsp.KillInsp m_intID, Me
Set m_objInsp = Nothing
blnSkipClose = True
End If
End Sub
Thank you for any help I can get.

It has been many years since I have had a brand name Desk Top. I think it might have been a Tandy 1000. See what I mean about many years? I have put together many of my own or had a local shop put one or two together. I will be faced with getting an additional Desktop machine sometime next year for a family member and expect it will have Win 8 installed.

I will want to install Win 7 on the Win 8 partition but will want to retain the factory installed Win 8 recovery partition for reasons I find it hard to explain right now. Will the clean install of Win 7 mess up the boot manager or whatever such that I will be unable to recover the original factory installed Win 8?

The above is moot if I can find a new machine with Win 7 on it rather than Win 8.

Thanks for any help.

Hello mate.

Just install to an Extended partition / Logical drive and all that is of no concern at all, a simple right click / delete will remove Windows 7 with no startup repairs at all have a look through the information in this tutorial at the link below for some ideas.

Hello all!

I'm wondering if anyone has any experience with this.

I bought a laptop that came preinstalled with Windows 8. I want to get rid of it and format the HD and install windows 7.

After finally working out how to enable to laptop so I boot from a cd, it's now always crashing in the initial stages of the starting windows 7 bit for the installation.

I know the CD is fine, I've tested it on another laptop and pc, it goes through without problems. However, it seems to always crash at the exact same bit with this new laptop.

Does anyone know of any further security I need to release in order for this to allow me to get in? or does anyone know of a method where I can format the hard drive and start fresh?

I'd appreciate any help at all, Thanks!

doddz...I am not sure about this, but I think you have to disable "Secure Boot" in the BIOS to do what you are seeking to do. I don't have Windows 8, but I would like to know for future reference, so please let us know what ends up working for you...

I have a y500. I hate windows 8, although I do make it look like win7 with 'start is back' . I really wanna wipe it and dual boot win7 and arch Linux. In doing so. If a piece of hardware malfunctions, can I send it in or not? Warranty still has 7 months so theoretically I could wait or buy another HDD but I spent enough on it alreadyAnyone know the answer or have done this?

Answer:does installing win7 on win8 machine void warranty

hi packagegoods,

Yes, you can still send the unit for warranty work but you will need to reload the factory default OS as you won't be able to get support if you installed any other OS.

In some cases that the fault is not related to the HDD (i.e. defective touchpad left/right clicker), you may request warranty support if you can send the unit without the HDD (which is subject to approval by the rep.) if you don't have means of backing up the drive / have confidential info, etc. and as long as the repair center can re-create the reported issue, otherwise, they may need to ask you to send the HDD.

Hi. I got Tecra R850-520e for 4 months. from the begining I have the same problem - loud fan but no cpu load (about 2-4%) using win7 and win8 64bit

I tried to change windows profile to optimized or to power saver. but i still get the fan to noise. I upgrade the bios to 3.90. I re-checked windows 8. and still the fun ist loud. when no cpu is used.

Notebook is cool - so I don't know where is the problem. probably this is bad driver for ACPI or for temperature measuring. I tried to change the notebook position - and I found two metal plate on the bottom.

I think it is a temp measure sensors. when I rotate the notebook, and the plates are "on air", not touched by any material - the fan is going to slow down in minutes.

Could somebody tell if any speed fun will work ? or maybe Toshiba will update the bios or drivers for it finally ?
The comfort for business laptop is very bad. I have SDD - and this is limited too. I didn;t supposed that Toshiba will sell such a sh.....

Could anybody have some drivers or setting that will slow down the fan in windows 64bit ?

Hi

You need to adjust the Windows Power Plane settings in order to improve the cooling system.

<Setting Method>
Changes in Operating System:
Control Panel --> Power Options --> Change plan settings --> Change advanced power settings --> TOSHIBA Power Saver Settings --> Cooling Method

Changes in Bios (Power Management):
Intel Turbo boost Technology

Changes in Operating System:
TOSHIBA HW Setup --> CPU Frequency mode

Try this settings:
Power plane (Toshiba power saver) Battery optimized
Intel Turbo Boost technology (BIOS) - Disable
CPU frequency ? Always low

From my experience this should reduce the noise.

Upon closing Outlook 2003, Outlook.exe doesn't unload and, as a consequence, Outlook can not be re-opened to screen without either a) re-boot or b) End Process in Task Manager. This happens whether Outlook has been loaded as 'outlook.exe /recycle' or without parameter.
When loaded, Outlook icon appears on right-hand task list - disappears when End Process command given.
Any clues to this annoying mystery?

Answer:Outlook.exe [2003] doesn't unload on close

This has been answered by IanRob under Forum Internet & Networking \ Web & Email.
The answer is to create a new profile - he says that he doesn't know why, and neither do I, but it does work.

Using Windows 7 64-bit.
This happens when I run the DVD encoding program. It used to work fine in Windows7 64-bit until 2014. Then I started getting this message when I try to start the program:
"The application was unable to load a required virtual machine component."
A solution was found, which involved uninstalling a Windows update: kb:3045999. It worked for a while, but then again the same problem recurred. Over time, the fix was to uninstall a number of updates, as follows:
wusa.exe /uninstall /kb:3045999
wusa.exe /uninstall /kb:3022345
wusa.exe /uninstall /kb:3068708
wusa.exe /uninstall /kb:3071756
wusa.exe /uninstall /kb:3060716
wusa.exe /uninstall /kb:3080149
Starting October 2015, after the Windows7 Service Pack got installed, all these uninstalls together don't help. I'm unable to run my program.
Can you tell us which updates to uninstall in order to make the program run correctly.

Hi,

I haven't posted on this forum in several years. The first time I posted, I was pretty foolish with computers and I had done something incredibly stupid. Since that incident, I've done my best to become vigilant and take control of my digital life. Now I find myself back here again. I guess I'm still a long way from being perfect.

I am unsure whether I have a trojan/virus or not. I ran Malwarebytes and Spybot yesterday, and all that came up were a few cookie trackers on Spybot. Mwb found absolutely nothing. By then, my computer had already been acting a little funny. I would open task manager, and task mgr would refuse to close or respond to clicks on the toolbar, yet would not say (not responding). The same thing happened with several taskbar programs like Flux, wifi, and others. Restart usually fixed it.

Today, I got scared into coming here because, as the title says, my desktop would NOT load at all for upwards of 20 minutes, even after several restarts and on->off->wait->on's.
I would get to the windows logon screen, enter my password, and then, it would just show the blank blue screen that comes up for half a second before windows loads the rest of your desktop. So, no menu bars, icons or anything.

FYI, I'm running a Sandy Bridge i3 around 2.2ghz, 4gb ram, intel HD3000 graphics, and a 500gb 5400rpm HD. My computer usually takes about 5-10 minutes to load everything on the desktop.

The funny thing was that I could stil... Read more

However when I try a system restore I get an application error within seconds saying memory can not be read.

Based on what I read, it appears that the ON UNLOAD feature in the main form should be used but I am not sure how to go about doing so.

Grateful for any assistance

Hello guys, I have the following problem with my T530's HDD: I replaced recently the original HDD (Toshiba MK5061GSY) in my T530 with an SSD. Then I bought a caddy (Nimitz) and put the HDD in the caddy as a second disk on the place of the optical device. I am using the HDD as a storage drive now. The HDD is containing only a couple of folders with some static archives now. No paging file, no Windows related folders or files are located there. Unfortunatelly, the load/unload cycle count of the HDD started to increase by about 2000 per day. (The total number of load/unload cycles was about 16000 for 2.5 years or use befote that, now it is 45000 for 1 more month). I tried to switch off the HDD's APM using hdparm and CrystalDiskInfo. Both of these tools are reporting APM as switched off (e.g. disabled=FFh) but I continue hearing clicking noise and the HDD's load/unload cycles continue increasing. I have done the same operation on a desktop PC some time ago and everything has been fine there, but it does not work on this Toshiba HDD. I switched the locations of my disks (moved the SSD to the caddy and the HDD to the primary disk location) but the problem remained. Has anybody had similar problems? Does anybody have an idea what the problem is and how to solve it? Thanks.

Answer:T530: HDD load/unload cycles

Hello and welcome,

I had a similar setup on my T420: mSATA SSD as boot drive, and HDD a storage drive.  HDD set to spin down when idle - which was most of the time.

I noticed that the HDD was spinning down and then often back up in a few minutes.  After a great deal of head-scratching I realized that  it was the Windows 7 slide-show widget that I had on  my desktop.  Images were archived on the HDD and the slideshow was randomly accessing them for display.

Not saying this is what's happening on your machine, just that there may be apps or services that periodically access the HDD.

I have a Win7 64bit laptop and trying to load a new program, it is asking for .NET framework 4.0 to be installed, it tries to load but quits 3/4 of the way into it then removes what it tried to install.

I tried to load 3.5 .net framework as well and again it wont load.

Im thinking its a setting or a virus that's causing this. I have tried several options I have found but none worked

any thoughts on where to start?

Answer:Unable to load programs. they stall out and unload.

It may not be malware, I read deleting previous versions and upgrading to 4.0 works for 64 bit systems.

Hello, I recently installed something called libusb, but when I shutdown I get the "blue screen of death", so I wondered if I'm able to unload libusb when I shutdown and load it when i start again.

And no, I must have it, so I can't uninstall it

Answer:Unload a driver at shutdown and load it at startup

Well unless anybody has a better idea and if you cant live without it.

Go to services and set it to autostart (If it doesnt cause problems on bootup)
That will load it automatically on boot.
You will then have to stop the service manually (from services again) before you shut down.
Not very good if you reboot a lot...it might be a temp solution.
I don't know of a way to have it unload automatically before shutdown...

Hi,
I must apologize in advance for any forthcoming ignorance, as I am a forum newbie. Using Win8.1, I am trying to relocate the Details Pane in Explorer from the space wasting right side to the well fitting & familiar bottom.

Fix I found is here: How To Move Details Pane To The Bottom In Windows 8.1 File Explorer

Has anyone had any experience in general with this tool? Haven't been able to find out any more jnfo either way othter than the link.

Thank you in advance for your time.

Better use Old New Explorer:
OldNewExplorer - make your 8.1/10 explorer work like Win7/8 one - StartIsBack+ - MSFN Forum

It has some other features but the one you are searching for is one of them. It doesn't always make the hack but it is much safer than patching the shell32.dll

I currently have Win7 & Win8 preview in separate partitions on the same machine. I am trying to figure out the best way to install win8 pro on my system and keep my current dual boot setup with Win 7 intact and stay legal.

So....I have a 3 licence family pack of windows 7 of which I have used only 1 licence. Is there some way I can use one of the remaining win7 licences to upgrade win8pro over top of the Win8 preview and keep my current dual boot win7/win8 setup(legally) and without messing up my current Win7 installation (or Win 8 preview installation for that matter)? Is there any advantage in getting the OEM version instead?

If I understand it correctly; Anyone dual booting a legit version of Window Vista, XP or Win7 and Win8 RP can use the upgrade version of Win8 to do a clean install over the Win8 RP version.

Start by telling us the size of your HDD & how it's currently partitioned. Obviously 575GB for any OS is WAY too big & 48GB is awfully small.I would use EaseUS Partition Master Home Edition (it's free):http://www.easeus.com/download.htm

I just purchased an HP Pavilion 20 All-In-One desktop computer that unfortunately had Windows 8 on it - I needed a computer immediately and no one in town had an all in one with 7 pro. I purchased Windows 7 Pro SP1 64 bit OEM software (from reputable store; computer is 64bit) and thought it would be an easy install - insert disk, follow directions. It acts as if it's installing windows 7, but when it gets to the screen which shows the language, time and - forgot the last drop down choice, I don't have use of the mouse or keyboard. I can't tab, use arrow keys, or anything. I have spent hours searching online before bothering anyone for free advice, but now I'm looking for free advice. Any help is greatly appreciated.
Also, do I post this in Windows 7 Pro or 8 ?

Let me add that this All In One does not have the touch screen monitor.

Hey everyone,

I'm a college kid who has been having major issues with my laptop, I'm desperate for some help.

The problems:
My Wifi cuts out at random, and after that my laptop won't reconnect- or connect to any wifi- until I either close the lid, wait for the green light to go off, then reopen, or I restart. This always temporarily fixes the problem. (This actually happened when I first tried to submit this post, so I have to retype the whole thing . This happens within anywhere from 10 minutes to a few hours from when I reconnect to wifi, and it seems to be somewhat correlated to me opening new tabs (or submitting a new post ). I don't use my laptop for anything other than casual browsing and school work, so I don't have any weird programs that might cause this. No single event started this, but it's been happening for months. I'd really appreciate any help.

Hopefully my explanation of this problem is not too confusing, this my first post.

My system is a multi-boot for Win7, Win8.1 & XP. I boot into Win7 most of the time. The multi-boot is controlled via EasyBCD in Win7. My data drive is a separate disk - F. I have been running this configuration for over a year without any major problems.

The system is an older Dell-XPS Core2 Quad CPU Q9450 A 2.66GHz with 8Gb memory
System drive - 1Tb with four partitions
Data drive - 1 Tb one partition

Recently I booted into Win8.1 after a few weeks of using only Win7. The data drive F: was not available. It does not show up in Disk Management and under Device Manager it shows as not connected to the system when the Unavailable Devices are displayed.

Booting back to Win7, the data drive is available, no problems with it. There are not any errors in the event/system logs in Win8.1 or Win7 related to the data drive F.

One possible cause might be that the motherboard battery was replaced about a week ago. I had to go in the BIOS and make changes for problems encountered when Win7 was booted. Unfortunately, I didn't boot Win8.1 to see if it had any problems. I've looked at the BIOS, but don't see anything that might cause this problem.

The config for the EasyBCD is below for boot into Win7
There are a total of 4 entries listed in the bootloader.

Default: Microsoft Windows 7
Timeout: 30 seconds
Boot Drive: C:\

Welcome to the forums Marioo!

Have you tried a system restore to a point before these errors started? (Easiest things first) You could also try a sfc/scannow, to find and possibly repair any corrupted system files. We have many fine tutorials here at the forums, written by some very knowledgeable people, heres a link to one if you haven't did this before :

SFC /SCANNOW Command - System File Checker

I have four machines all connected via a home network and accessing the internet through a D-Link router and a cabled network.

I recently had to reinstall windows xp on one machine and since then cannot get it to reconnect to the internet. It recognises the network, and picks up its IP address from the router, but I cannot get it to see the internet or access the routers software through its IP address. The other machines continue to function normally.

I have reinstalled drivers, and tried the common fix given several times on your forums to reset the TCP/IP settings.

I have searched your forums and tried several other fixes but still cant connect.

PINGing the machines own IP address is successful but pinging the default gateway gives nothing.

Can you help with any other suggestions ?

I am having a very frustrating issue. I have been trying to get this code to work for over two weeks and I have had only partial success.

I am writing some functionality that utilizes .NET's remoting features to make Microsofts's Excel talk to another application. The other application is a CAD program called NX.

I am writing it in Visual Studio Professional Edition 2012 and I plan on compiling the code as a Console Application,
I have been able to successfully link Excel to NX remotely which is a big first step for me.

However now, I am trying to use the Workbook_sheetselectionchange event as a way to activate certain events based on user input.

The problem is that the sheet selection event will not fire off!

The subroutine ProcessNXData fires off just as it should and collects the necassary data from NX and populates the Excel spreadsheet. After that, I do some clicking and nothing...

I have no idea what is wrong. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thank you!

Hi, I get a T400s 2808 CVG. I degrade to XP Pro SP3.The Hard-drive is Toshiba MK2529CSG. I experience Hardrive clicking (or ticking) when the hard drive is idle. Forcing the drive to be busy silences the ticking sound. On the other hand I get the issue that "Load unload cycle count" SMART attribute is  decreasing very quickly. I loose 1 point each 4 or 5 days. I also make a little test to check the correlation between the reported number of load unload cycle count and the ticking sound. Postive. Each time I hear the tick, each time the SMART attribute report one more Load/unload cycle count. Any one get the same issue?Any solution?I already see and read http://www.thinkwiki.org/wiki/Problem_with_hard_drive_clicking Thanks and regards, Patrick

Guys, can someone help me out on trying to resolve an issue I'm having on my network.

I have 3 Main PCs.

One in the Gameroom--Media Server (Windows 7 64bit, onboard Gigabit Nic). MSI AMD 780G Chipset.

One in the Office--(Windows XP MCE, INTEL Gigabit PCI)

One in the Living Room--HTPC (Windows 7 32bit, onboard Gigabit Nic) GIGABYTE AMD 780G Chipset.

I just upgraded all my systems to new hard drives in hopes of archiving all DVDs onto the server and streaming them from there to the other machines.

All connections are working fine and I can move around files between machines no problem.

My issues I can get 70-80 MB/s between the HTPC and the Server.

The most I can get out of my Office and the Server is 37-40MB/s.

The 2 OS drives in the Office and HTPC machines are Identical..Samsung F3 drives. The drives on the server I'm sending files to are Samsung F4 drives.

I just did fresh OS intalls on these drives when I placed them into service.

I used all windows drivers except for the Intel NIC in which I used the supplied drivers for it.

Can anyone tell me why my XP machine can't pull the same mustard as the other machine? It really has me puzzled.

Thanks,
Mike

Ok here is my situation. I've been building computers for a little less than a year. This one here is my 7th machine, so I'm still very new to this. See if you can help me get this thing running correctly.

When I first built this machine, it seemed to run ok. The monitor didn't kick on at first but after a few presses of the reset button it came on. I was able to load windows, etc...
After all that I turn the machine off. Next day I power it up to install some other software and the machine seems to turn on, but the monitor only powers up and then gives the "OFF MODE IN 5 SECONDS" screen and then turns off. Sometimes the monitor won't even power up (light stays orange).

So thinking this is just a video card issue, i send the card back to newegg and get another. Same exact problem continues. I take the whole thing apart and re-build it. Same thing.
I replace the monitor with another monitor, doesnt work. Yet the monitor I was using works fine on other machines.
Not knowing what else to do, I send the motherboard, ram, case, videocard, and hardrive, back to newegg to get all new parts.

Well i put the machine together again, and the same problem!! I even switched the processor with another machine I had built recently and the processor worked fine in that machine.

And NOW even to add to the problem, this machine powers up right when i hit the on/off switch in the back where the power cord connects. It just starts up when that is in th... Read more

Answer:Can't get machine to work. Monitor won't fire up. Please help.

Try clearing the CMOS ,because I take it you can't get to BIOs setup screens. And I think you might have some settings in there causing some problems.APIC,Ram Latency ,etc.
If you can get to Bios ,Flash to latest update.
Run a memory test at this point.
It might be best to strip that system down to the bare minimun outside of the case , andput it back one piece at a time testing at each step .
Also try to reverse the power switch connectors at the Mb .

I have a Windows 7 computer with Lotus 8.5 on it and I need to transfer Lotus 8.5 and all it's files and emails and the encryption key to the Windows 8 computer. I do not think that Windows 8 will recognize Lotus 8.5 so I had the idea to partition the Windows 8 computer and install Windows 7 on one of the partitions thus making it a dual boot computer, then install Lotus 8.5 to the Windows 7 partition. My problem is Windows 8 is already installed on the computer and Windows website warns not to install the older operating system second.
Windows website warns, "You must install the older operating system first, and then install the more recent operating system. If you don't (for example, if you install Windows Vista on a computer already running Windows 7), you can render your system inoperable. This can happen because earlier versions of Windows don't recognize the startup files used in more recent versions of Windows and can overwrite them." What should I do? I have found some information on installing Windows 7 as a second operating system on a Windows 8 computer thus creating a Dual Boot computer and giving you the best of both worlds and full app compatibility as some of your Windows 7 applications may not be supported in a Windows 8 environment. Thank you.

Hi everyone.
Ok after growing tired of seeing my 2012 laptop run faster on windows 7 than my 2015 lenovo, i decided to install windows 7 on it as well.
After solving enough problems (burned a dvd since the usb port was not recognized by the windows installer once it started running, changed some stuff in the bios from Win8-ideal to Win7-ideal to get the installer to load in the first place, tried 3 different versions of win7 because one never went above 0% progress).
When i was finally able to install windows in a partition (im keeping half of my drive available for installing Ubuntu in the future), I got it to load and the computer reboots. Haven't tried safemode yet (this was yesterday at midnight).
Has anybody come across this problem? What can i do? I'll provide whatever specific details im asked. Thanks in advance!

Did the system come with W7, or was this an upgrade? If an upgrade, update your drivers. If you have say a Vista driver for your NIC (onboard or card) that may have worked before, it may not work after an update for security, but a newer Windows 7 driver will. You have to be a little bit crazy to keep you from going insane. This site is about helping people, lets keep it that way.

Slow booting.  Really slow booting.  Seems that using an SD card for ReadyBoot/ReadyBoost is causing the issue.  But why?
On investigation, this only started happening back in November, which coincides with the install of KB2685813 UMDF 1.11 (http://support.microsoft.com/kb/2685813).
Could be a bit buggy....

I'll uninstall the update and see if this solves the issue.

Hmm.  Now that is interesting.
In my System event log I was getting an NTFS error (57: Failed to flush tlog).  I didn't think it was from my HDD, so using diskpart, I ran a 'CLEAN ALL' on my SD card, then recreated the FS as exFAT (previously it was NTFS).
Seems to be working now, although I'm getting VDS Basic Provider errors (Unexpected failure.  Error code:
[email protected]) "which can be safely ignored" (re: KB979391).
This begs the question: if it can be safely ignored, why is it raised in the first place?
Boot time is also restored to an acceptable timescale.

Hi, I got a T430 on Ebay. It's running Win7 and I want to do a clean reinstall; but it only has a win8 sticker in the back and no win7 product key. So looks like it was factory installed with Win8. If I choose "restore to factory-installed state", would it go back to Win8? I don't want that. I want Win7, but I want a clean reinstall. Is that even possible? Thanks.Jeffrey

Answer:T430 win7 with factory-default win8 - how to reinstall win7?

Hello and welcome,

The answer(s) will depend a lot on how - and by whom - the Win 7 image was installed.

If it shipped from the factory that way and the seller didn't mess with it, I'd expect the factory recovery option to return it to OOBE Windows 7.  Does it even still have recovery capability?

Recovery won't get you to a "clean" install but will get you back to "as shipped" state.

If you want a clean '7 install and the laptop was either originally shipped with Windows 8 Pro or Windows 7 Pro by way of downgrade rights you should be able to use Microsoft's downgrade procedure to install and activate - but you will need to find install media and an already-in-use key.  I realize that last sounds ridiculous, but have a read of MS's downgrade document:

Understanding downgrade rights

I hope that helps a little.  It might help us help you figure out your laptop's license status if you'd post the MT-M (like 1234-xyz).  That should let us (or you) pull up it's as-shipped configuration.  DO NOT post the serial number.

I am considering upgrading my 18 month old Samsung RC710 Windows 7 laptop with 4 GB memory to Windows 8. The laptop has Acronis True image installed with regular images being created.
I have created a fresh Acronis image of ‘C’ as well as a Windows 7 image and also created a Repair Windows 64bit DVD. Both in the event of failed Win8 installation or a desire to revert back to Windows 7.
I welcome any thoughts on my reasoning?
My understanding that the current £24.99 offer of upgrade to Windows 8 does not include the ability for a DVD function or am I not reading this correctly? Also what are the implications of this?
What are the possible pitfalls in the upgrade as I wish to be prepared?

Hi,

I have a dual boot set up - Windows 7 Ultimate 64-bit on an SSD drive and Windows 8.1 on a second hard drive. I would like to upgrade Windows 8.1 to Windows 10 and keep the Windows 7 OS in tact.

Is this possible? Can I just go through the upgrade process from Windows 8.1? Any possible gotchas I should be aware of?

I've seen a few threads discussing Unbuntu or Linux as a second partition but didn't see one for this situation. Apologies if I missed a similar thread.

Thanks for any help you can provide!

You should be okay to upgrade within W8, I don't foresee any problems. You could/should make backups just in case.

This is weird, but if my Win 7 computer is on and connected to the router (wired), then neither my Toshiba laptop (also running Win 7) nor an iPod will reconnect after sleep.

After reading through this forum, I tried disabling the Homegroup on both Win 7 computers, but it didn't help. Even tried disabling the IPv6 on the network adapters.

I've also made sure power remains on to the wireless adapter even when computer is asleep. And updated all my drivers, etc.

The only thing that helps is turning off the wired Win 7 computer. Obviously not a permanent solution!

Help appreciated.

The laptop is also showing a Microsoft Virtual WiFi Miniport Adapter #3. Could this have anything to do with the problem?

So I have a laptop that has a mapped network drive to a server thats always on. Problem is, whenever the laptop is rebooted, the network share is disconnected, and won't reconnect until you retype the password in.

From what I can guess, the network is not coming up before the OS tries to reconnect the network share, causing it to think it can't connect.

Ive tried a startup batch file to no avail.

Anyone else have this completely stupid issue or a way to fix it?

hello

I have no empty partition and I have Win7 in my system.

I now want to make it dual boot with Win8.

Can you advise me please about the procedures and tools needed for the fastest and safest way?

First, Win8 Enterprise is the only free evaluation, or there is a Pro VL evaluation edition available to the public? (I am not part of MSDN)
Second, I need to create a partition, right? Which program will do it safely?
Third, do I need a serial to install Win8?

any advise welcomed!

thanks!

Answer:Win7 -> Win7/Win8 dual boot

First, one no clue. I'm not sure if you can rearm the standard version like 7, but the normal version is available to download from Microsoft. Several links in the Slickdeals.net forums on how to download Windows 8 legit through Microsoft.

Second, right click My Computer>> Manage>>Storage>>Right Click your HDD and Shrink partition, then create a partition there or just leave the space and have Windows 8 create the partition there.

Third, no you do not need a Windows 8 key to install Windows 8. In that regard it works like 7.

I have not done a Win7/8 dual boot partition, I found no need because Windows 7 and 8 behave almost identical, but it "should" work similar to any traditional dual boot. You install one OS like 7 first one a small partition or create a partition, then install Windows 8 via the Custom install option and put it on the unpartitioned or partitioned space. Please someone correct me if I'm wrong, but in most regards, with the exception of a UEFI install, this is how you do it.

I love how Metro IE11 works now in Windows 8.1. I was using a reddit app, opened an article, and it spawn a separate window for the IE browser to read a link. Works great. But one day, when it launched the IE browser, I was hearing a video that was completely unrelated to the link. I was like, "hmm..."

So I bring up the tabs and I had like 50 tabs open! When I close the IE browser that spawns from reddit or from a newsreader like News Bento, I just drag the app to the bottom of the screen to put away IE. That didn't terminate the tabs. So it was tedious to close each tab independently.

is there a way to close all tabs immediately?

Answer:close all tabs simultaneously for Metro IE 11 Win8.1?

Is this a special case scenario because I just set my Tabs Options to default settings and when I opened multiple tabs during the next browsing session, I received this message when attempting to close the browser normally:

So I checked off "always close all Tabs" and the next time I opened a multi-tabbed browsing session they all closed on exit without any warning.

Hi,
I am having trouble connecting from an XP (Home) desktop machine to a Win 7 (Home Premium) laptop to share files.
I have read and followed a lot of posts to no avail.
specifically I have followed the advice in "How to make Windows 7 work with older Windows versions for networking and file sharing"

- both machines are in the same workgroup
- there is no trouble going from Win 7 to the XP box
- on win 7 the network is defined as a 'Work' network
- firewalls are disabled on both boxes
- Advanced Network settings
- Network discovery in ON
- File and Printer Sharing is ON
- Public folder sharing is ON
- password protected sharing is OFF
- Allow Windows to manage Homegroup connections
- the shared folder in Win 7 says its shared (its not in the public tree)
- On folder Advanced setting decurity, 'Everyone' has been added
- On folder Advanced setting sharing it says "People without a user account and password for this computer can access folders shared with everyone"

The XP box is using XP Home which can only use 'Simple File Sharing'.
On the XP box the win7 machine appears in the Network list under the workgroup.
If I click on the machine I get a login prompt!
Attempting to map a drive to the win7 box the same network is shown browsing to the win7 machine does not list any of the shares. (it also does not ask for a login)

Interestingly if I go back to the network and enter the userid / password then I can see the shares... Read more

I want my computer to lock automatically whenever I close my laptop lid because I really lack security around my dorm.

Is there a way to run a command whenever I close my laptop lid or is there a program which does this? (on Windows XP)
(I don't want it to go into standby, hibernate, or shutdown. Just a simple lock.)

Hello, I have an x61s running Windows Vista business (32 bit).  I'd like to be able to close the lid while the system is shutting down. That is I initiate a shutdown by selecting "shut down" from the Windows Start menu, and then I close the lid of the notebook, without waiting for the sutdown to complete. Problem is that closing the lid makes the notebook go into sleep mode, even if a shutdown has already been initiated. Does anyone know how I can avoid this, so that the system will continue to shut down even though the lid is closed in the process? That would be most useful, because when I decide to shut down my computer, I want to close the lid immediately.  However, if I close the lid during regular operation (not in a shut down scenario), then I don't want the system to shut down; In this case the system going to sleep following the lid close event is fine. I tried setting a "Lid closed action delay" of 2 minutes (in power manager, global power settings, advanced settings for the "lid closed" event), but this does not seem to work, the system still goes to sleep immediately after I close the lid.Message Edited by astra4 on 12-17-2008 08:22 PM

Hello everybody!

I received a laptop awhile back that came pre-installed with Windows 8 which I did not enjoy, so I decided to downgrade to Windows 7. Which has been going fine and everything is good, but 2~3 weeks ago I had some questions involving my computers performance that I also requested advice about via this forum and was told that my process is pretty bottom shelf and that Win8 was better for this. Plus, the newest update just released so I am curious as to how they improved on it and if I will like it now. I have been reading and am just a little nervous because I don't want to ruin my only computer that I need for school. Being that Win8 has the UEFI funky new BIOS thing, I recall having to change certain items involving booting when I went back to Win7. So, I am wondering if the BIOS is still the same as when I had Win8 (other than those values that I could change back) or did it completely refigure it? I am not extremely well versed with these sorts of things and have just begun really 'tinkering' a few months ago. So, do I need to update the BIOS for Win8 or is it fine? I am currently backing everything up right now and just want to take the proper steps to ensure a smooth installation. Lastly, I read that the product key for Win8 was now stored on the BIOS and there were programs to retrieve it, but I'm assuming that is when you are running Win8. Is that key lost and do I need to purchase another one? Or would it still be on the BIOS? Any advice is greatly ap... Read more

Answer:Win8 to Win7 back to Win8 (HELP! w BIOS, product key on BIOS etc.)

Hi Jeremy-

What I would do is shrink C in Disk Mgmt to install Win8 in a Dual Boot to try the new update to see if its anything compelling. This is how I tried Win8 repeatedly until I finally deleted it for the last time realizing it doesn't hold a candle to Win7.

The steps are here for Dual Boot Installation - Windows 8 and Windows 7 or Vista - Windows 8 Forums.

If you changed to Legacy Mode to install Win7, then you can install Win8 in Legacy Mode too. You don't need to use Secure Boot or UEFI which is crapware that adds no extra value but plenty of complications.

I want to install Windows XP either on a seperate partition or an external drive. I have a working physical CD for installing XP. However, when the CD drive is put first in my boot order on my windows 8 desktop machine, it doesn't boot. The only thing that can get it to boot is disabling all other options in the BIOS boot order except my CD drive. When it does boot up, setup gives me an error that "mv64xx.sys" is corrupted. However, this is not the case when booting from my laptop running windows 7. The same CD works fine there. My idea then was to install it to an external drive via my laptop using this tutorial on the forums and then boot the external drive on my main PC, but the tutorial states that the drive's OS can only be booted on the computer that installed it. My computer is the HP Envy 700 Desktop and my laptop is a 5 year old Dell Studio. Any clues as to what can be done here would be greatly appreciated.

I've converted three different machines to Win10, and before the conversion, all three could see a Win8.1 tower PC that I used a data storage machine.

Now, after the conversion, only two of the machines can network to the tower PC.

The HP laptop, which I converted most recently, can not even see the tower PC in the list of networked devices.

I don't use HomeGroups, so I disabled the associated services on all three PCs. I also confirmed that all three PCs use the same named WorkGroup.

Of the three Win10 PCs, two are running Home and one is running Pro, but the Home desktop sees the Tower PC, the Home laptop does not.

I regularly use the network connection to do backups of the three PCs to the Tower PC, and even though the wireless is slower, it's till faster than copying the backup image file to a USB stick and then reading that in the Tower PC. So, I would like to continue to use the network connection.

The laptop connects to the Internet just fine, so it's not a general networking problem.

Don't really want to have to restore the laptop to Win7 because of this small problem.

But ... I'm at a loss what to try at this point.

Answer:Can't see Win8.1 machine anymore

It is possible that this has to do with "Master Browser" settings for networked devices. If you Google this you will see that W10 has a problem in finding network PC or devices if it is not the master browser on the network. Whether or not your PC is the Master Browser depends on if it was the first device powered up or if other devices have been turned off that were previously assigned as the Master Browser on the network.

You can check the devices on your network as follows:

1.Open up a command prompt
2.Type net view and hit enter
3.Look at the list of computer names. These are the computers on your LAN. Note that the format is \\COMPUTER-NAME
4.For each name in the list, type the following command: nbtstat -a COMPUTER-NAME

One of the results from the nbtstat commands will show a row with “_MSBROWSE_” in it. That means that this computer is the Master Browser.

Check to see if that PC sees the Tower PC. You can change the order in which you turn on PCs and laptops to influence which is the master browser which is a workaround until MS fix the problem.

I am having trouble reasoning this out, and would appreciate any help.

I have an old machine, I built 5 years ago...it currently has 2 HDD's, one of which runs legit XP...installed from a DVD delivered with a previous Dell machine. I have a new SSD, that will be used to install Windows 8...currently empty, but attached to the Mobo.

I have run Windows 8 update advisor, and it wants me to download an upgrade for $40...however, I have been told in the PC shop that I will be "safer" if I buy the $150 OEM version.

In my world $110 is a big difference...and if the upgrade will work, I would opt for that. I just can't seem to find confirmation anywhere that this will be possible. In my mind, I will run the upgrade assistant, pay the $40, create an ISO, disconnect all HDD's and run a clean install on the new SDD.

Is that still an upgrade? or will the upgrade version block me at the activation stage somehow?

I don't want to spend $40 to discover it doesn't work, and that I need to spend another $150...

Thanks for any advice!!

Answer:Old XP machine, new SSD for Win8...is this an upgrade or need OEM?

I actually just installed on a new computer I built that had Windows 7 installed but no key (30 day grace period) and it installed without a hitch. I reformatted my HD as well. I just hope I don't start getting black screened and have to go back and install a previous valid version of windows, then reinstall windows 8. I just don't get it, technically my install isn't valid according to MS. It says right on the upgrade page, "To install Windows 8 Pro, customers must be running Windows XP SP3, Windows Vista, or Windows 7." I was expecting it to ask me for a valid Key from a previous version of windows, but it never did... When I go into system in Win 8 it says my version of windows is authentic. I've heard other reports of this as well when people upgraded from releaes preview.

On the Windows 8 machine, you might want to go to the Network and Sharing Center, then check the Advanced Sharing settings to make sure that Network Discovery and File and Printer sharing are both enabled. Let me add the picture of the All Networks settings here in case anyone else gets confused by all these settings. Both of these settings require adjustments, two layers for the same thing.

Answer:How to know which version win8 on this machine?

Hi mystic12 To find the version of Windows you are using, simply press on the Win Key + R keys and enter dxdiag. Your Windows version information will be displayed in the window that will open. Alternatively, you can right-click in the bottom-left corner (on the Metro Menu preview on Windows 8, and the Windows logo on Windows 8.1) and select System. That information will also be displayed there.

Hi everyone, hoping someone can help me out.

I recently purchased a refurbished Asus VivoBook laptop with OEM Windows 8 64-bit. The main purpose for this machine is to run a DOS-based application that only runs in a 32-bit environment. My questions is, what would be the steps, without buying a new retail version while using my OEM product key, to get Windows 8 32-bit on this computer.

Thanks in advance for any help. Let me know if you need additional info.

Answer:How to install WIN8 32-bit on 64-bit machine with OEM key

I am working on a Dell Studio 1745 running Win7 64 Home Premium. I need to run a piece of hardware (Tascam US122) that is incompatiable with the 64bit OS. My plan is to partition the drive and install Win 7 32bit on the new partition so I can run the mentioned hardware. I've done this on another machine (Dual Boot XP and Win 7) and ran into a problems with the bootloader. I learned to install older OS FIRST because of that. I'm wondering if installing Win7 32bit on a current Win7 64bit machine will cause a similar problem with bootloaders? I'd rather not have to mess with the bootloaders, but I really need to run this hardware. And, since this is a Dell, with touchscreen, and most IMPORTANTLY, a friend's computer I want to be 100% sure I'm not going to cause issues I can't fix.

So, again, will installing Win7 32bit on a new partition of a Win7 64bit machine cause problems with the bootloader, or any other foreseeable problems?

Thanks a bunch!

I am not a huge fan of the built in Win8 backup program but still using it for now.

What I want and I know I seen it somewhere (even wiling to get the paid version) of a program that you install, and configure what folders/files you want synced with your external HDD. So each time you connect it whatever changes are made to the files are re-copied to the external much like a differential backup.

Things to know:
I am NOT interested in Online Backup
I am not interested in taking an image of my PC
I only want specific directories backed-up
I am fairly certain I seen something like this with high ratings but can't remember the name of it for the life of me.
Oh, and most importantly, I want them to be flat files

This recent thread (Way of Performing Clean Install of Windows 8 OEM) raises the issue of a marketplace vote for me. It also identifies a number of problems arising because of the way OEM?s (particularly Dell) are installing Win8. The thread, at its most fundamental level, deals with this issue.

My immediate thought on this matter was that someone needs to devise a reliable/easy means of getting the secreted keys off the OEM machines and legally obtaining ?media? that will work with the keys to obtain the desired clean installs?without incurring additional costs. I later learned that some have been able to extract their keys. Still, there may be no way to get the needed media legitimately?and without incurring additional cost. Incidentally, I don?t see anything in the OEM EULA that implies unambiguously that one cannot extract his/her OEM Win-8 product key, although the EULA does say that one cannot ?attempt to circumvent technical protection measures in the software? (not sure what all this excerpt is meant to imply).

Not much really annoys me tech-wise. But, IMO, the system that has been set up by MS/OEM's for installing Win8 is not very customer friendly for those that, for whatever reason, will eventually want to... Read more

Now THIS is strange. I cannot run either CPU-Z or HWMonitor (latest versions as of today) with my computer any more. CPU-Z will either stop the computer running during scanning my computer or will display the CPU running 317MHz THEN stop running! I turned off my o/c and no difference, seems to be Win8 CP. I have tried compatibility and running as Admin, no help. Reset is the only way out, mouse moves but no longer can click on anything.
Anyone else?

Answer:CPU-Z and HWMonitor will freeze Win8 on my machine...

I dunno, you could check C:\Windows\System32\Drivers for any and all drivers that start with "cpuz"

If there is more than one, you can use Dameware NT Utilities to delete the CPU-Z services which load the driver(s), then reinstall CPU-Z after a reboot.

Check the CPU-Z driver modified date in its properties, if there is only one. Make sure it is 2012 or late 2011 version.

I am running Win7 Pro 64 bit on my desktop computer which is hardwired to my network. I have a Kindle Fire and whenever I try to browse across the network and access the Win7, I can see it but I cannot open it. I always get a bad path or general login failure message on the Fire. I can browse to and access the Win7 from any other computer on the network so the problem seems to be with the Kindle-Win7 interface. The Kindle has no trouble whatsoever browsing to and accessing a computer running XP Pro 32bit that is wirelessly connected to the network. I've tried several different file management apps on the Kindle and I have to admit I'm stumped. I'm beginning to wonder if it's some sort of bug in 7, the Kindle OS, or both. Any thoughts on this would be appreciated.

Hi,

I have an old desktop with an ASUS P5W DH motherboard, a E6600 Core 2 Duo processor, and 4GB of RAM running 32-bit Windows XP. Currently, there are two hard drives: one 640GB HDD with an OS partition and a data partition, and a 1TB HDD with a single data partition.

My primary objective is to install Windows 8 64-bit onto a new 120GB SSD, and use the two old HDDs as data drives. If I could dual boot XP and Win8, that'd be even better, as I'm not sure how well Win8 is going to run on my aging machine.

I've done a fair amount of reading this evening, but I'm confused about how to proceed. I hoped this would be straightforward.
It appears that there are actually two problems I'm trying to solve:

1) How to install the SSD itself, manually aligning the drive, installing the XP drivers for AHCI, putting the machine in AHCI mode without disabling the old HDDs.

and

2) How to take advantage of Microsoft's current upgrade offer of $39.99 but getting ahold of the the 64-bit version, installing it onto the new SSD (rather than overwriting the existing XP install on the old HDD), and then hopefully dual booting. I can live without the dual boot, so as long as I'm able to disconnect the SSD and return to my old XP install.

I could really use some guidance in terms of where to start, and what's the best way to achieve my objective.

Answer:Devising a plan to upgrade an old XP machine to Win8 on a new SSD

Hi lalaland5000,

I can't help you on doing the clean install upgrade and dual booting as that would circumvent Microsoft's license agreements. When you upgrade XP, your not supposed to be using it anymore.

If you choose to buy the full version, then here is some info.

First and foremost, be prepared for things to not go so smoothly. Windows 8 can be very temperamental when upgrading older machines. These upgrades typically fail with the not so useful message "Install Failed" that leaves you scratching your head. Make sure you have run the Upgrade assistant before hand to see what MS thinks: http://windows.microsoft.com/en-US/windows-8/upgrade-to-windows-8

As you have already mentioned, XP wont align the SSD partitions properly. You can download gparted and use that tool to properly create the aligned partition on the SSD. If you plan on installing Windows 8 onto the SSD drive, it will align it during installation so you do not need to worry about that.

As for switching to AHCI and not messing up your current install of XP, I found this : http://www.blah-blah.ch/it/how-to-s/enable-ahci/ No grantees this will work as I have never switched it after install and not sure how well it will work for you.

Once you have the AHCI switched properly, you can move onto the installation. You can just install the SSD as another drive in the system. Then when you install Windows 8 onto that drive it will automatically configure it to dual boot between xp and 8 if... Read more

I have two different Microsoft accounts on my Win8 machine, which is a laptop. One of them is an account I got from my ISP and has been in use for years but that one is disappearing in a few days (I think) because I cancelled my account with my ISP. The other account is one I created within the last couple of weeks.

In transitioning to the new account, I'm finding it considerably more work than I expected and wonder if I am ignorant of some easier ways of doing things. For instance, I was surprised that the applications installed under the older account aren't visible under the new accounts. Is there an easy way to make them visible or do I really need to reinstall the same applications under the new account from scratch? For example, let's say I have a game like Taptiles on the old account and want it visible under the new account: do I really need to do a fresh install under the new account? Or is there an easier way to be able to play Taptiles from the copy I originally installed under the original account?

Also, what is the easiest way to pass data back and forth between the two accounts? I did a copy within a file on the original account and switched to the second account to paste that information in and was disappointed to find that it was not possible. I ended up sending an email to myself then copied from the email on the newer account. It struck me that there must be a better way but I'm not sure what that would be.

I have a U310 running Windows 8.1 that has had issues since it was purchased 1.5 years ago. The SSD died shortly after purchase, and was replaced by Lenovo (but not programmed at all...they just threw a new SSD in and no formatting was done). This computer does not boot quickly, but I can live with that. The real issue is the WiFi connectivity. This unit recognizes my home network, but often will not connect. After turning WiFi on/off, or disconnecting and reconnecting, it often says that the network is connected but the signal is limited. Alternatively, it will say the computer is connected to the network with full bars, but the internet will not load and Chrome (and other browsers) do not recognize a connection. All other wireless devices in my home work perfectly and NEVER drop the connection. This Lenovo is the only unit experiencing any issues. I've re-installed the WiFi drivers, but no change in activity was noted. Any help will be greatly appreciated. I don't want to purchase a new computer, but this unit needs to be able to connect to WiFi reliably.

It's important for me for Windows Messenger to reconnect because msn wakes me up at certain times with nudges from my business partner. How can I fix this? What's the problem? Thanks

I use an X61 running XP SP2. When I am at my desk, I connect the laptop to my 24" monitor via VGA cable.   Via Ctrl+F7, I can modify my display settings and receive options such as:- Notebook only- Same display- Extended display All of these work fine.  However, just recently, after I disconnect (either using Ctrl+F7 or simply unplugging the VGA connector - both end up with the same result) and later try to re-connect, when I press Ctrl+F7, no menu option appears. When I go to Control Panel | Display, I can 'see' the monitor is connected and I can 'extend' display to the desktop monitor BUT cannot set-up 'same display' from here. The only option that works is to restart the system and then Ctrl+F7 works fine again. I do not believe that I have made any changes to the system that would warrant this change (however, there may have been a recent automatic MS XP update that was loaded). Does anyone have any suggestions on how to handle this?  Do I need to update anything related to the system?

Just got my new computer yesterday. I'm running Windows Vista Home Premium 64 bit.

I have my dialup connection set to reconnect after connection loss, and it does it just fine - but Windows Live Messenger Will not attempt to re-sign in after my internet connection has been reconnected! It just keeps doing that countdown over and over as if I'm not connected to the internet.

This is important for me for Windows Messenger to reconnect because msn wakes me up at certain times with nudges from my business partner. How can I fix this? What's the problem? Thanks

.....you see i have this little problem. Everytime I dial up a connection and then disconnect, I can't reconnect without rebooting the machine. Does anyone know what this could be??? It has me totally stumped. Everytime i try to reconnect it freezes at "veriying username and password".
Thanks in advance.

I have a multi-OS household so I've gotten to see Apple's Time Machine up close and personal. Here's what it does:

1) You plug in a USB drive (or configure it to point at a Time Capsule or at a Linux netatalk share configured to look like a Time Capsule), and then it just works. Nothing else to do.

2) If you want to restore a file or directory, you just use their Finder/Explore-like UI to choose the date (or just the latest date), then drill down to the file or directory you want, and drag it out to your desktop. Then you can move it to where you want it.

3) If your hard drive crashes, you just re-install MacOS from scratch on the new hard drive, and near the end of the process it asks you, "Do you want to restore from your Time Machine backup?" Answer "Yes", and then a few hours later you're back to your desktop as of within less than an hour of when the hard drive crashed, with all your programs, data, and settings.

4) If you buy a new Mac, one of the first things it asks you is, "do you want to migrate your programs and settings from a Time Machine backup of your old computer?" You answer "Yes", and then a few hours later you're back to your desktop exactly as it was when you turned off your old computer after its last backup, with all your programs, data, and settings.

So: I have this nifty new HP Envy 17 laptop. It screams because I got a 120GB SSD as the C: drive and a 750GB hybrid drive for the D: drive and a quad ... Read more

Answer:Looking for something as close to Time Machine as possible

I've used Macrium Reflect and it CAN do three things you mentioned -- but not exactly as Time Machine does them:
1) Incremental/differential backup -- don't know if you can set it to do this "continuously", but you certainly can schedule these to be done.
2) Restoring files/directores -- you can "mount" an image backup and copy files and directories from that to your drives.
3) Restoring entire system -- this is what I primarly use it for. I make an image backup weekly can restore the entire setup from that if needed. Also has a feature to install WinPE to the hard drive, so you don't have to create or boot from a CD or USB to do the restore.

I seem to remember that Acronis had similar and even more features -- but I haven't used that in a while. Perhaps someone who's used it recently can comment on it.

Hi,

I started realize this on the 30th of May. I thought it was just a network problem with the University internet (Resnet) which may or may not be the problem. I am waiting for them to reply on the issue. However, doing research about this and thinking about it more, it could be a possible malware which I would like to check with you guys to confirm.

Basically the problem is that I cannot get on certain sites with Internet Explorer (Internet Explorer cannot display the webpage) or Chrome (This web page is not available. Google Chrome's connection attempt to www.google.co.uk was rejected. The website may be down or your network may not be properly configured.).
Google.com/google.co.uk is one of the sites that I cannot get on. However google.ca works. Also if I use the google toolbar WITHOUT pressing enter / clicking the search button, it works fine which allows me to see the results.
I cannot log in secure sites such as hotmail or even use the program Windows Live Mail. Same with trying to log on League of Legends and Diablo 3. However all the sites I cannot get on or log on in, works on Firefox. Also if I use Chrome's Incognito browser, google.com works fine but I still cannot log in on secure sites.
Programs such as Skype, MSN, Teamspeak3 works fine.
When I diagnose connection problems on I.E, it gives me no problems found. However when I diagnose the LAN, I get problems fond: "Your computer appears to be correctly configured, but the device or resource (... Read more

Where (how) to find the CLOSE event (the click of the red X on top-left of the form) on a C# form?

I need to close the application when the red X is clicked. I can do this by writing application.exit() method, but I can't find the event on the code to write it. It was so easy with VB because there were all events, even those not declared.
Can anyone help?!
Thank you in advance.

I've searched all over from http://www.eightforums.com to lenovo forums. I've called support and they demand a fee to provide me support for my brand new laptop. I'm desperate for a solution because I have exhausted all more likely resources for solutions to my problem. My problem is that the option to burn factory reinstall discs have been removed. In the windows 7 version of this laptop, One Key Recovery provided this option. For win 7 laptops, this allowed people to reinstall the OEM OS on their msata SSD. Now that option is not there. I've burned a system image disc set, I burned a bootable system repair disc. I created a recovery flash drive on a usb stick. Neither of these windows 8 options allowed me to recover to a new drive on the same laptop. I really really hope someone can help me. This is ridiculous.

I'm wondering how to use my migrated Win8 Retail license on my next machine. It will be a few years from now and well past the free upgrade offer.

I've used Showkey and I'm not sure if what it returns will be usable. If memory serves me (don't trust it myself) I think it's either the default Win10 Pro key or my Win8 Key (I'm on Win8 now, will post an image next time I'm on Win10).

The default Win10 certainly won't activate and the Win8 key will not upgrade after 29 July 2016.
The digital entitlement won't be valid - that's for the old machine.

It will most likely require phone activation and that's not a problem. I'll just have to remember that's how Win10 will activate given this scenario.

Remember: it's a Retail licence
I understand and comply with all of the legalese (one machine, remove from old...)

Any thoughts?

I am having a bit of a bizarre issue with a machine that I am working on. The windows programs such as regedit, defrag, and msconfig all close of their own volition after being open for a very short time. I would say the average time before they disappear is about 10 seconds.

I have already scanned the machine for viruses repeatedly and have found none. I have also done a repair install of windows with no luck at all. Lastly, I disabled every startup item in msconfig and this had no effect either.

One last note, the problem does not occur if I boot the computer in safe mode.

I want to close a shelled application, and I'm sure that there is a one liner to do this, but I cannot seem to find a example. How do I do this?

Answer:close an application vb6

A one liner would have to be:
Code:
Shell "TASKKILL /F srvmain /IM AppToKill.exe", vbHide
On a more complex and reliable method you can do this. Add all the below code into a module.
Code:
Option Explicit
Declare Sub InitCommonControls Lib "comctl32.dll" ()

I have an application that seems to close, however the process is still running.

A way around I thought would be to launch the app from within another vb app using the shell or CreateProcess command.

I already know what the handle id is of the App, so I thought I could wait until the app window closes, then terminate the process.

However, I have got as far as launching the program using a shell command. I have never done any API programming before.

Does anyone know how to do this?
