Google's New Smart Lock Is the Password Manager for the Rest of Us

Question: Google's New Smart Lock Is the Password Manager for the Rest of Us

From: http://lifehacker.com/googles-new-smart-lock-is-the-password-manager-for-the-1710352668

Amidst all the big Google I/O news, the company quietly made a major overhaul to Chrome?s password manager. It?s now a part of the revamped Smart Lock service, and if you still haven?t started using a secure app to store your passwords, this one?s for you.

What?s Actually New?
Google?or, more specifically, Chrome?has had a makeshift password manager for a while now. You?ve probably seen it before: any time you enter a password into a site, Chrome will ask if you want to save that password for later. It also used to be a pretty terrible way of storing passwords, until Google fixed that about a year ago. Nevertheless, this feature was little more than a slightly fancier version of saying ?Keep me logged in? on web sites.

Now, the whole system has been upgraded and rolled into Google?s Smart Lock feature. If that name sounds familiar, it?s probably because you?ve used it on your Android phone. Smart Lock originally allowed you to unlock your Android phone if you had it paired with a trusted Bluetooth device (like a smartwatch) or were in a trusted location (like your home).

In addition to rolling Chrome?s password manager into Smart Lock, the whole platform comes with a few new features:
You can manage your passwords from the web: If you visit passwords.google.com, you can see a list of all the passwords you?ve saved with Chrome. This is protected by Google?s standard two-factor authentication (which you should be using). Even on computers you?re signed in on, you?ll have to re-enter your account password to access the list.
You can now save (some) app passwords: Previously, you could only save passwords for web sites, but now, Smart Lock can save your passwords in some apps as well. There are already a few apps that support this feature including LinkedIn, the New York Times, and most thankfully, Netflix. Hopefully more will support Smart Lock soon.
Auto Sign-In bypasses app sign in entirely: For supported apps, Smart Lock doesn?t just save your passwords, it can (optionally) skip the login screen entirely. The first time you log in to an app on a new device, you?ll see a blue bar at the bottom with your Google account on it, but you?ll immediately be redirected to the main screen of the app. The process is completely invisible. If you?re not comfortable with this, though, you can turn Auto Sign-In off in your Google Settings.
Now, if you?re an avid user of LastPass (or any of our favorite password managers), you?re probably not overwhelmingly impressed. Smart Lock is a solid effort?and to be fair, it?s muchbetter than not using a password manager at all?but it?s also playing catch up.

Where Smart Lock Is Awesome
To call Smart Lock a ?password manager? would be misleading. What Google?s trying to build is an entire identity solution. Your Bluetooth device unlocks your phone. Your phone unlocks your Google account with two-factor authentication. Your Google account unlocks all your other logins. It?s designed to be an army of cross-referencing checkpoints that make sure you?re the one who has access to your account and no one else. As such, Smart Lock has a few advantages:
It?s completely free: LastPass is free on your desktop browser, but costs money to use on your smartphone. 1Password is a paid app on every platform. While most password managers are worth the money, not everyone?s going to pay for it. If you still haven?t shelled out the cash for a more robust password management service, Google?s system is at least worth checking out. It?s also probably worth recommending to your friends and family who would never pay for a password manager in the first place.
Your Google account is your master key: For some this might be a downside, but if you?re a regular Google user, being logged into your account counts as authenticating. Not only can this be very convenient, but it also means that the primary way to access your passwords is fairly strongly protected.
Smart Lock protects more than just your passwords: Syncing your passwords to your phone can be a security risk if you don?t use a PIN or password lock. Smart Lock as a platform, however, encourages you to keep your phone secure too, by taking away the inconvenience of unlocking your device at home or in other trusted conditions.

Preferred Solution: Google's New Smart Lock Is the Password Manager for the Rest of Us

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

I have an program on my PC where I can keep an eye on bank transactions, etc., but each time I access it I see this message "Do you want Google Smart Lock to update your password for this site"! To get rid of this message I simply have to click on a blank space on the page, as I have no intention of changing my password, but I would much rather find out how to prevent this message popping up each time I go to the site. Can anyone help me to rid myself of this?

Google Chrome Smart Lock in Windows 7 on HP Pavilion dv6t laptop

· Opened Settings

· Selected Privacy and Security

· Migrated to Passwords and Forms

· Tapped ?ON? in Manage Passwords

· Turned Auto Sign ?ON?

· List of Saved User Name & encrypted Password Appeared with a menu to open the encryption

· List of Never Saved websites appeared along with an ?X?

When I tapped the website name the website opened but required a log in

Am I correct in understanding that these two lists are from websites previously opened in Google Chrome?

What I need to know is how to add names from the Never Saved list to the List of Saved

Hi ,
I am running windows 7 professional 64 bit on a quadcore xeon machine.
My company IT policy requires that we change our account passwords every 2 months. After the last password change , my computer is locking me out of the network by trying to login with an invalid password stored somewhere in the credential manager.
I have tried clearing the credential manager many times , no use. we checked all my machines, virtual machines, network drives, printers, none of them seem to solve the problem.
Our IT specialist has checked our machines multiple times and found nothing.
so far we know of two machines with the same configuration causing this problem. The only way to avoid being locked out is to turn off my machine at night.  The login attempts occur at 5:00 am in the morning every day .

Answer:Security-kerberos Event ID 14 . credential manager causes system to login to network with invalid password and lock the account.

Microsoft Support found the problem for us.  Our domain accounts were locking when a Windows 7 computer was started.  The Windows 7 computer had a hidden old password from that domain account.
There are passwords that can be stored in the SYSTEM context that can't be seen in the normal Credential Manager view.
Download PsExec.exe from
http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/sysinternals/bb897553.aspx and copy it to C:\Windows\System32 .
From a command prompt run:    psexec -i -s -d cmd.exe
From the new DOS window run:  rundll32 keymgr.dll,KRShowKeyMgr
Remove any items that appear in the list of Stored User Names and Passwords.  Restart the computer.

Hello,
Chrome browser stores my passwords in the "Password manager". However, some sites ask me annually or half-annually to change the password. But it is not replaced in the "Password Manager", it keeps the old password, and when I try to open that site, the old password is embedded, have to change it manually. Chrome does not open a pop-up window asking if to save the password, as it has one saved.
In the "Password Manager" cannot do any editing.
Answers will be appreciated.
Thanks
Motim

Answer:Password Manager in Google Chrome

I believe you must delete the saved password and then chrome should ask to save the new password the next time you log in.

Or set chrome to never save passwords and use a better password manager like LastPass.

Unfortunately, if you don't know the password, you will have to do a complete reset. The settings for the most part should be default so it shouldn't take long to put it back the way it was.

After trying to register at their forum, I finally gave up and hope to get help here.

This may be a stupid question, but Slawdog Smart Shutdown has an option to lock the computer. What does this mean? If I lock it, how do I get it unlocked?

I'm thinking this might be a good feature to use for a 16 year old grandson who gets up after we go to bed and gets on my computer. If I could lock it so he couldn't use it without my input, that would be great. Am I on the right track here, or does it mean something totally different?

Thanks
Peg

Answer:Slawdog Smart Shutdown - lock

You really dont need anything to lock him out. Try giving your account a password and when done on the pc simply log out and he cannot get on unless you let him on. Also you can set up to prompt for a password at the screensaver settings screen.

Hi. I had Windows 8.1 Pro and upgraded to Windows 10 via Windows Update. I can't set as lock screen this service that personalize it. I can do it on my laptop! I don't have Paint either.

Answer:Why don't I have a Paint and smart lock screen?

I don't find Paint on my apps list either, but if I search (in the Cortana/ask me anything box) for Paint it comes up. Open it then right click it on Taskbar and Pin it. I think Microsoft wants to push Fresh Paint forward.

Google introduced Smart Lock with Android Lollipop, but can be used with Chrome browser, Android apps and Chromebook owners.

"Smart Lock for Chrome and apps
Let Smart Lock keep track of all your passwords. Smart Lock safeguards usernames and passwords in Chrome and in certain mobile apps."

What are your views on Google Smart Lock for Chrome (browser) and using it to log into Android apps?
FYI: Smart Lock currently does not work for Chrome Sync with a custom passphrase (ex. not your Google password). Smart Lock also provides for other purposes, but wish to focus on Smart Lock as an alternative to your default password manager.

Hi everyone. There are several threads that are available for help with reseting a Dell D620's bios password here. And I understand they have all be closed b/c all the information has already been discussed. But within those threads all the links to the dstcd.iso are dead now. Would anyone have or could point me to a working download for that file? Google came back with shady links that I rather not use so any help would be appreciated. Thanks.

Answer:Dstcd.iso Link is dead, need help with Dell BIOS password rest

There really isn't a valid solution. The D620 is unusually difficult to impossible for password repair, and the idea was chewed for a year. Solutions that supposedly work are perhaps illegal and certainly dangerous. They turned out to be a good source for malware and infestations without being helpful. All the solutions are as expensive as replacing the system board or the computer.

Hi there,

I seem to have an hidden malware infection. I have Norton 360, Anti Malware, Spybot & SuperAntiSpyware installed on my system. Non of the scanners pickup anything but norton's auto protect seems to block "Suspicious,MH690.A" attacks. I have made no changes to the system and it remains like it was when it was infected. Only sympton except for false negatives from the anti malware software is random redirects of links from google search results. While I have torrent software installed on my system, I donot use torrents and it was installed for academic purposes. I am certain the vector of infection is the browser. Also this sympton is not limited to Opera but is prevelent in Firefox and I am afraid to switch IE on.

Question: Smart Boot Manager

I can't seem to get this to work, no matter where I go i get access denied:

sbminst -t us -d 128 -b sbm_bckup.dat -y

this is supposed to install smart boot manager to the harddrive, so when i boot up i get the menu, but access denied.

I guess i've never had to change the way the computer boots manually before. i tried a clean boot cd and still i wasn't granted access to do it. how can i do this? their website doesn't say from where you have to do this command.

edit: it works with a floppy, but this is useless to me, because some machines i'm trying to install this on do not have a floppy.

what would be perfect is some thing like barts clean boot cd, but with harddrive support, so that i could backup the original MBR. but even the ultimate boot cd doesn't have harddrive support.

I have recently installed Eset Smart Security for the 30 day trial period (really impresses with so likely to buy it when it runs out) and am using Internet Download Manager for dowloads. The question I have is how to set Eset to automatically scan files once they have downloaded.

I previously has Zone Alarm and it was relatively easy to configure within the download options within IDM. I have specified the virus checking file within IDM Download options but nothing seems to happen.

Is there something else I need to do? I have included a picture of what I mean just in case it's not too clear (http://i164.photobucket.com/albums/u31/spasman75/IDMScreen2.jpg).

Sending emails to the right person will be easier, it says

Microsoft?s working on a new set of features for Outlook.com and Outlook on the web that will make it really easy to pick your recipients and send an email to the right person.

Starting early 2016, Outlook accounts will be upgraded with a smart contact manager that will display suggested email addresses and emails in the To: and CC: fields. A drop-down list will be generated based on your usage, and Microsoft says that only people you?ve been communicating with recently and most frequently will be added.

But that?s not all. The new feature will also include a spell checker that will recommend the right contacts based on the common variations on the spelling of names.

Which free offline password manager would you prefer (without cloud)?

I already use sticky password premium. Sticky password has improved its windows extensions with new graphical identifier for input fields. This has made it very easy to use and autofill works for all sites now.

But i want to know if KeePass is better, being a open-source & free. Does it's autofill works with every site?

Please share & help me decide.

The title says it all! Currently using Norton Identity Safe's standalone password manager, but would like to start using Lenovo's instead. Attempted to import .DAT and/or .CSV files from Norton, but no option for these file types appeared in Lenovo's Password Manager. If not an option to import directly, is it possible to add one of the files to the location Lenovo stores the password manger entries?

Solved!

Answer:W520 - Lenovo Password Manager - Can .CSV or .DAT files be imported from other Password Managers?

Hello,  No you can't import .CSV or .DAT files into Password Manager. It uses a .PWM file format, and uses a 256-bit key AdvancedEncryption Standard (AES) with Microsoft CryptoAPI. You can export your info to be used in another machine with the Thinkvantage Password Manager installed, but not from another password manager. More info here:Password Manager 4 Deployment Guide Cheers!

Answer:BEST Offline Password Manager: KeePass Vs Sticky Password Free?

It looks like you want to use them for online form-filling. I would use neither of them, KeePass does not have good browser integration it relies on external add-ons and opens one port just for form filling. It is good for offline secure storage.Sticky Password free is good but does not offer anything extra other than the passwords(for my use).If you are using Sticky password it is good for onlline auto-logins.

Hi,
I recently set up a Huawei B890 4G LTE Smart hub, and forgot the password that I put on it.
I can not find a reset button on it.
Anyone know where it is? Or how I might reset it ?
The instructions say to login to factory reset it.
Thank you!

W520 Smart Card reader does not show up in Device Manager. It was working before and now nothing.  Nothing happens when SD card plugges in. Could my smart card reader stop working or is this a configuration issue? Any thoughts? thanks Ian

Answer:W520 Smart Card reader does not show up in Device Manager

Hi  Ian,

Welcome to the community, and thanks for the post.

Hello, I received a new laptop for Christmas and, while testing out the keys, clicked on what I now know is the 'lock' button above the numpad. It locked the operating system, as expected. I swiped my fingerprint, but when I do so, it goes to Lenovo Fingerprint Manager Pro and informs me that it must validate my password. I cannot change the username or location, but it has two fields: New password and a second one to confirm the previous. I tried my Lenovo password, my Windows 8 password, writing nothing in the boxes, and creating a new password with all the usual limitations - numbers, 8 characters, etc., etc.. They all return with the same 'Credential Error' that it cannot validate my password. Windows 8 will not log me in unless I complete the Fingerprint login. Restarting does not seem to work. What can I do to fix it? I'd rather not format my PC a couple weeks after I got it, you know?

Answer:T540: Fingerprint Password Manager not accepting new password.

*bump*  after an update- my fingerprint manager is now saying this error as well.  i can't change my password and the revealed password is incorrect.  anyway to reset this? . im afraid one day my fingerprint reader will not be able to read my fingerprint anymore and i will never be able to login ever again

I made the error of getting an X201 notebook with only a trackpoint. I would really rather prefer to use a touchpad. I am confident in replacing components on my X201. My question is whether a new palm rest with a touchpad is compatible with my X201 which originally only came with a trackpoint. For example, could I buy the touchpad below on ebay to install on my device? http://www.ebay.com/itm/New-Orig-IBM-lenovo-X201-X201S-X201i-Palmrest-cover-with-TP-FP-60Y5421-60Y54... Thank you!

I came to Bleeping Computer for help because so many times the advice I have read here has let me fix my own problems, but this time I am really stuck.

We got something popping up calling itself Smart HDD running a hard drive diagnostic and wanting us to pay for it to fix the drive.

MalwareBytes found that, and removed it, but the desktop had no icons and was not clickable.

I was able to run unhide, and that fixed the desktop issue.

After that, Security Essentials found something it called Trojan:Win32/FakeSysDef, Exploit: Java/Blacole.ET and Exploit:Java/CVE-2012-0507.D

* Google is still redirected in IE - any time I click on a link in google, the browser goes to NaughtyTeens.com, then jumps to a fake search site.

* If I load security websites in IE - such as BleepingComputer.com, for example - IE shuts down.

* Chrome won't start.

* Rkill runs, but finds nothing.

* aswMBR and TDSSKiller appear to be blocked, I can't start them up.

* I tried RootKitBuster from Trend Micro and it didn't find anything.

* DDS runs for a while, then the computer completely locks up, and no log file is generated. One line reads "Post the contents of the logfile to the forum where it was requested". The next line adds hash marks until they get under the "t" in "it", then it hangs up there every time.

* GMER starts, and gives me an error. "LoadDriver ("C:\Docume~1\Admini~1\LocalS~1\temp\pxdcypow.sys")... Read more

Answer:Smart HDD / Google redirect

There is a newer version of TDSSKiller posted - that version found and killed Rootkit.Boot.SST.b.

Now DDS runs - here is the log for that. I have also attached the log from TDSSKiller.

I have a ThinkPad SL400 with Windows Vista.  I have installed and am using Lenovo Password Manager.  During the install it sets the master password to match your windows login password.  The tools work good but now when I change my Windows Login Password the Password Manager will not work.  If I bring it up and try to login with the new password it appears to accept and closes the login window, but it does not activate.  If I use the old password it give a login failed message. I had to go and change my windows password back to the old value to get it working again.  Now that my passwords are stored inside the software I need it to work, but I also need to change my Windows Password. What is the method to change the master password for Lenovo Password Manager or sync it automatically with my windows password? Thom

Cyber criminals have started targeting the password managers that protect an individual's most sensitive credentials by using a keylogger to steal the master password in certain cases, according to research from data-protection company IBM Trusteer.
The research found that a configuration file, which attackers use to tailor the Citadel trojan for specific campaigns, had been modified to start up a keylogger when the user opened either Password Safe or KeePass, two open-source password managers. While malware has previously targeted the credentials stored in the password managers included in popular Web browsers, third-party password managers have typically not been targeted.
While the current impact of the attack is low, the implications of the attacker’s focus is that password managers will soon come under more widespread assault, Dana Tamir, director of enterprise security for IBM Trusteer, told Ars Technica.
“Once the malware captures this master key, then they can use that master key to exercise complete control over the machine and any of the user’s online accounts,” she said.

Unfortunately I did not find much info because, if I understand, the ransomware blocks all operations to reset your TV using the remote control.
Anyway you can try a factory reset by following this guide

In PassWord Policy, a pass word is NOT necessary when waking from sleep IS NOT WORKING...meaning no matter what I do, if I don't touch anything for about 30 seconds, sys. goes asleep and I have to sign in....this is crazy as it just started about a week ago and I have no idea why.

Any ideas?

I gave my daughter a Dell XPS 15(L502X) Laptop, running Win 7, about 10 months ago. Some how the laptop on boot up will respond to the first password asked for. The next password asked for is HDD password. She does not know the password nor how it was set.

I can get to the setup screen, F2,[which reads Phoenix SecureCore T iano Setup] but cannot change boot options. There is a + sign by Hard Drive and a + sign by Network. Everything on the boot screen can be highlighted but no item will respond to the Sub-Menu key, Change Values key, or Setup Defaults.

I decided to post here before calling Dell. I have used Dell computers for many years but do not like dealing with their tech support.

Any ideas or suggestions are appreciated.

Thanks in advance.

Unfortunately, we don't assist with password issues, other than to say try just hitting Enter as the password may actually be blank. Please refer to this section of the site rules:

Hi All,
We have a system with Smart card login. Some server under domain controller require a smart card login and some others do not require.
For the servers which do not require smart card login I can change domain user passwd by clicking ctrl+alt+del
For the servers which requires Smart card login when I try to change domain user password again it checks smart card and after that give an alert like smart card drivers are not installed for this operation.
I want to keep smart card login but I do not want it to require smart card login to change domain user password.
Do anyone know a way?

Our organization recently moved to requiring the use of smart card authentication when logging into computers.  We have set this using group policy and is enforced on the computer (not the user account). Along with using PIV cards, we have also configured
the username hint field so that administrators can put their admin account name in the field in order to run administrative actions on a system. The problem we have been seeing regarding our admin users who need to perform admin tasks on a user's system, is
they get an error message that states "Logon failure: unknown user name or bad password". This only occurs when at a user's machine who is currently logged into the computer when the admin puts in their smart card, do a run as, and
select their smart card, enter their pin and their admin username (in the hint field). The only work around to this is we have to reboot the computer to login as an admin to complete the admin tasks which is a pain.

Has anyone ran into a similar problem like this? We have been spending countless hours/days trying to figure out why this is occurring. Microsoft has not been able to figure out the issue either.
Greatly appreciate for any suggestions for resolving this.
Thx.

Hi everebody,
The problem with the user interface appears, when using authorization by the smart card. If your password has expired on a domain account, and you has trying to log on, Windows reports: ?your password has expired and must be changed?
If you press «OK» button, when displays a blank screen with a single button «Cancel». After it has come back to login screen.

Accordingly, there are two problems:
1)  The user cannot log into the system (because of cycling process :)
2) The user does not know to which account (PIN or domain account) he must change password.
Two question:
1. Does it happen by design?

2. How I can cope with a problem?
PS If I make an immortal password (password never expires), I get a security threat. If I leave only authorization for the smart card (user setting:
smartcard required for interactive logon), the user can not log on to the web interface of mail, such as a house, etc.

### Any your
help will be appreciated! ###

Most of these problems I tried to fix myself before finding this forum. I already fixed most of the problems but I want to see if a virus is left. I used ComboFix, Rkill, and malwarebytes already. Gmer freezes my computer and I was not able to save it. The main issues now is that I still can't get windowsupdates even though the site actually loads now and lag. There was a memory bluescreen after running ComboFix but after restarting, ComboFix finished and fixed a lot of stuff it appears. Tdsskiller.exe didn't find anything after running combofix. Hijackthis log is clean. Ran OTM.exe. Microsoft Security Essentials is working again. I was somehow infected with the SMART malware virus sometime today. I ran malwarebyte's program. Then went back and followed the bleepincomputer removal guide http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/virus-removal/remove-smart-hdd. All of these steps seem to work ok, however the tdss killer app doesn't run. I only see ms program in the start menu, and all of my personal files, and computer files (control panel, recently opened files etc) are hidden. The desktop is black. When I open the computer in regular mode (I am currently in safe mode), I get a bunch of errors and the smart virus runs.

I encountered the problem yesterday with Smart Fortress 2012 installing itself on the desktop then it would periodically start scanning on the screen. Eventually I looked this up and managed to, I believe, get rid of it using Trojan killer which I bought. However, Im not sure whether buying over the net was a clever thing to do considering the problems with the comp.

I then used Malaware bytes to scan the comp which came up with a further 5 infected files and I also used Microsoft security essentials for a scan too which rid 7 more!

The main problem Ive got now is that the windows firewall wont come up and I constantly get redirected on Google - no matter which link I click on. I've read of a similar case on the form which involved various complicated processes

There is also DWM.exe and csrss.exe in my processes which I've heard of could potentially be a problem, but I don't know whether they are infected or not.

On a more minor point, the viruses have changed all the font settings on the display.

Urgent help required please

Thank you for reading.

Hope to hear from you soon.

I just got a 950XL on the web but it has a password lock on it,how can I get around that? A hard reset ain't work I don't think because id still have to enter a password after the reset wouldn't I? Please let me know your thoughts, any help is much appreciated

Answer:Password lock on my 950XL

a HARD RESET should subvert the password ... it'll also wipe the device.
That would be recommended on a used device, start fresh, install the latest version of WM10, then add apps.
Search for the (side) key combination for that device, to Hard Reset the device.
Just a thought, BUT, with a password set on the device ...
there's a chance you bought a lost or stolen / blacklisted device.
If so, it (ultimately) may not work.
Contact the seller for a refund or the unlock code.

Right click on the Desktop and select Personalize.

Scroll down and click on Screen saver settings.
Uncheck On resume display logon screen.
