Kaspersky Trusted Application Mode (TAM): Maximum Settings

Question: Kaspersky Trusted Application Mode (TAM): Maximum Settings

Kaspersky's Trusted Application Mode (TAM) at maximum settings will protect the system.

Technical infos:

Basically,

Trusted Application Mode performs a system scan and, after a user review of the scan results, "white-lists" (= Allows) only those applications and scripts on the system that are included in the Kaspersky databases or approved by the user.

Any unknown files are by default blocked by TAM from start-up unless the user creates an exception allowing the file to run. In other words, TAM "black-lists" all unknown files except unrecognized system critical files (which require user verification and permission to run).

For best security...

The Trusted Application Mode scan must be run on a clean\dis-infected system; a completely clean system is critical for default-deny to work. A complete PC reset is the most reliable method to ensure an absolutely clean system. Then install Kaspersky and enable TAM.

The user must carefully review the TAM scan results to confirm no unwanted\malicious files\scripts are allowed on system.
User must configure Application Control, after the TAM scan, with the following settings:

Automatically move unknown applications to "Untrusted."
Dis-able "Trust digitally singed applications."
Dis-able "Load rules for applications from Kaspersky Security Network (KSN)."
System "Lock-Down":

Using the above settings will block the installation\execution of any file\script - Trusted, Untrusted and Unknown - that was not already on the system prior to enabling TAM and permitted to run by the user during TAM's final configuration. That is how Default-Deny works in a nutshell.

The above settings "lock-down" the system. Password protect Kaspersky and no one can install anything on the system except the Kaspersky Administrator.

For best protection, it is recommended that the user completely finalize the custom configuration of their system prior to enabling Trusted Application Mode using maximum settings.

To Install Trustworthy Applications while Trusted Application Mode is Enabled:

To install a widely-used (> 10,000 users) application from a well-known, reputable software vendor, enable "Load application rules from Kaspersky Security Network (KSN)." Install the application. Open the app's interface and thoroughly review its functionality and configure its settings and enable components. This step is necessary to activate any modules not automatically loaded during initial installation and, most importantly, permits Kaspersky to create rules for those modules. When finished close the app, then re-disable the "Load application rules from Security Network (KSN)."

WARNING !

Using any other Trusted Application Mode settings will very likely allow the installation of malware.

Brief explanation...

The Kaspersky Security Network (KSN) is not infallible. Its database includes riskware, adware, scareware, spyware, etc. [All AV vendor file-rating databases include them due to a number of extremely difficult to overcome limitations.]

This is a limitation of file-rating databases generally and not negligence on Kaspersky's part in any way. In fact, Kaspersky does a solid job of screening and rating applications... but that process takes time.

A few factors that negatively impact Kaspersky Security Network application rules:

A significant fraction of riskware\malware is digitally-singed with a valid certificate.
Kaspersky users who do not know any better allow, as yet, unclassified malware\riskware to run on their systems; those allow rules are shared with KSN by opt-in users and generally KSN mimics those rules until the file is eventually rated as "Known Bad" via various means.
The sheer volume of new applications compounds the above issue as well as slows down the speed of more sophisticated screening and/or more accurate group file-ratings.
A particular application may have an extremely small number of users (< 1,000) which makes accurate assessment of the file a challenge.
The above factors apply to all AV vendors that reply upon user data to rate files and to automate the creation of app rules in their software.

My best advice - download an application's installer but do not install it immediately. Scan it at the end of at least two weeks of Quarantine (or better yet, if your AV has this capability - manually add it to Quarantine and allow your AV to re-scan it for a few weeks). If, at the end of Quarantine period, there is no signature detection then it will significantly reduce the probability of a serious system infection.

Preferred Solution: Kaspersky Trusted Application Mode (TAM): Maximum Settings

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Answer: Kaspersky Trusted Application Mode (TAM): Maximum Settings

Will Kaspersky block everything if I disable trust digitally signed applications? I have run all my applications all are trusted in Virus Total, but I had to add Samsung (god knows why!) portable SSD applications and Tweaking.com Windows repair. What I did find funny, on my old laptop Kaspersky blocked a few files from Office 365. I have gone back to Kaspersky on my new laptop, it kept blocking the NHS software I had to install, plus any Windows Metro app I brought.

I am running Total Security 2017.

Any help from fellow users would be appreciated.

Thanks

How to enable the Trusted Applications mode in Kaspersky Internet Security 2018

Now I use Kaspersky Internet Security 2018 Only with TAM active,
according to the above, Is this mean I am fully protected 100%? yes or no and why?
Thanks

Answer:Trusted Applications mode in Kaspersky

No, you're never 100% protected because certificates can be faked, and applications (rare but possible) can bypass this module. Nothing is impentrable brother.

I personally do not use this mode, it's way too much paranoia.

Is it a bug or bug on Windows 10 64 or bug in KIS 2017 or ............?

Any info?

Any Kaspersky users experience the above?

Answer:Kaspersky Application Control - Kaspersky Internet Security 2017 bug?

Yes, this happens & not only in 2017 but in earlier versions as well.

I experience it as well, but not quite often as you are. Mine comes when i am disconnected from internet for a while & then connect again, then (i guess) KSN checks the app control rules again & places them (apps) as described in the KSN rule-set.

The problem come from the setting 'Load rule for applications from KSN' in application control, which is enabled by default.

This shouldn't be a problem if you are using default settings (Auto-mode) as Low restricted is basically Trusted in auto-mode. But if you use interactive mode, this causes a lot of prompts which can be quite annoying.

How does an application go from not verified to not trusted. I have a program called setupwizard.exe. It is part of BeyondTV. Recently I installed a quad TV tuner card and ran this program to setup the tuners. The system is a windows 10 clean install. Today I noticed that the other tuner card was not found in device manager. After several attempts I switched the tuner card between PC's. After rebooting both systems the tuner card in each PC was found. I then tried to run the setup program and got the "This app has been blocked for your protection." So this application worked with in the last three weeks. Now it won't run. I then tried to run the setupwizard on the other PC and got the same message. I have a third system running windows 10. This system has been offline for that last couple of weeks. I booted this system up and was able to run the setupwizard with no problem. I then copied the setup wizard from the system that worked and tried to run it on the failing system. It still got blocked. I then tried to reinstall the BeyondTV program and the installer also got the blocked message. I just installed this program two weeks ago.
So the question is what changed. The only thing I can think of is a windows update. in the last two weeks.
When I ran the program on the system that was offline a pop up message asking for permission to run a not verified application. But no the pop up says not trusted.

Thanks

Answer:Application not trusted

Hi there

some of these I'd just ignore if you trust the application -- I get these when downloading Windows versions of the nightly builds of Logitech Media server - which is a 100% safe (and useful) server music program.

Message is something like "This program isn't frequently downloaded" -- although why that should be a criterion -- after all if you do it on downloads - what about some dubious but popular programs from some torrent sites !!!.

Again if you trust your source download and the program just ignore the message and install anyway.

Cheers

I run XP Pro and the free Comodo firewall. Comodo has recently started to block my NetObjects Fusion updates to my websites, and similarly blocks my use of the old (Ipswich) FTP program WS_FTP95. Both these worked fine until recently and apart from a recent full C drive image restore using the Acronis backup from the day before there have been no mishaps or alterations to my knowledge. I have set Fusion and FTP95 as trusted applications but I must be missing something. They upload OK to the website if I disable the Comodo firewall so the situation is not dire. Any ideas anyone?

Kapersky Internet Security 2016 offers a great level of protection on its default settings. However, there are a few settings which you can change to increase even more the protection offered by Kapersky Internet Security 2016.

This guide should also cover Kaspersky Total Security 2016, and some settings should apply to Kaspersky Antivirus 2016.

1. Enable "System Changes Control" to block changes to operating system and web browser settings
If the web browser start page or the default search engine has changed without your intention, it might be activity of an adware or malware. In some cases, such changes are caused by add-ons that come with software you install (for example, with media players or instant messengers). Sometimes system settings are affected by malicious scripts that could have reached your computer through insecure websites.

With System Changes Control in Kaspersky Internet Security 2016, you can trace and block unwanted changes to the system settings.
Open Settings menu in KIS 2016 by clicking the gear icon in the lower left part of the user interface.

In the Settings window, go to Protection and select System Changes Control.

In the component settings view, make sure the component is enabled (the switch on the right must be On). You will be prompted for action whenever a suspicious change of settings is detected.
Select the check box Block changes automatically if you want Kaspersky Internet Security to dec... Read more

Hello folks,
While trying to download activeX controls and virus definitions from Symantecs online scan, I checked the "always trust content from Symantec Corp." I would like to know how to revers that. I figured that would be part of tmp. internet files, but that turned out to be wrong.

Answer:Reverse settings for trusted content

Assuming IE 5.5 or higher (unless it's the same regardless of IE version) ... Go to Internet Options and click on the Content tab. In the middle there is the Certificates button. If you click on Certificates then Trusted Root Certification Authorities, look for Symantec. Select it and remove it.

I haven't ever done this, so if there's someone here that has....PLEASE CONFIRM THIS. I know this area is where certificates are stored. You're removing the certificate. I would think when removing a certificate when you attempt the online scan again you will be prompted as before.

I have setup CF according to Cruel Sister's settings.

In the course of installing the new KAF, I posted questions about using it in conjunction with CF and a BB and came across a posting by Umbra referencing the Trusted Vendors List being the weakest link of CIS in his opinion. That posting is here:

Comodo Internet Security Setup/configuration thread (Setting Only)

Now Cruel Sister does not reference this in her video in terms of unchecking the option, and I would not think to question Comodo being a top notch security firm, and left this feature activated in File Ratings.

However, after reviewing this list I came across the following which gave me pause. There were three vendors listed entirely in Chinese, which I can neither read, nor speak. Should I trust these unknown vendors? If this be the situation, and Comodo is able to list these as supposed "Trusted Vendors", any vendor could be listed, in any language, compromising one's security by allowing software written by them to operate if one were not a linguist to try and interpret it, and decide whether it could then be trusted.

Maybe Trusted Vendors should be unticked?

I am hoping Cruel Sister weighs in on this, too.

Maybe this is of no concern but listing an indecipherable unknown as a Trusted Vendor could be considered a vulnerability in my opinion.

Your thoughts?

Answer:CF/CS Settings/ - Trusted Vendors List - A Vulnerability?

I am also a bit confused why they not translate the list so all can read it?
The first thing i do is to remove the Chinese and Russian certificates in that list.

Hi Chris,
The Trusted Sites cannot be added using Group Policy Preferences. But you can add it by native group policy.
The group policy settings are here:
User Configuration\Administrative Templates\Windows Components\Internet Explorer\Internet Control Panel\Security Page\Trusted Sites Zone
If you really want to use the GPP, please manually add the registry keys through GPP.

We have had an issue whereby sites explicitly listed in our Trusted Sites in IE11 where still being rendered in compatibility mode. Some network traces show the user-agent string being sent include MSIE7 7.0 and hence this makes sense. So it seems the browser
is putting the site into compatibility mode. Digging around on the web we found this for IE8:

Compatibility View is used for Trusted sites in Internet Explorer 8
So it seems that this still applied for IE11. Now, we can work around by tweaking the options for automatic placement of sites into the intranet zone but we don't want to do that as there are modified security settings in the zones and we need to keep sites
in their zone assignments.
So, I have a couple of questions:

This only seems to affect compatibility view and from a security zone perspective, the trusted site settings still appear to apply. Is this assumption correct i.e. explicit listing in a zone wins from a zone assignment perspective but compatibility view
decision logic is differentHow does enterprise mode tie into this? Is Enterprise mode site list checked first then the normal logic applied?

Hi,
I'm using Comodo v10 in proactive security, the HIPS level is Safe mode.
Unfortunately, I always find this line in the blocked applications:
The exe comes from a trusted vendor:
And I have a custom HIPS rule that allow that exe:
If i unblock the app from the blocked list, after few seconds a new entry is created.
The only way to not create the entry is disable the HIPS component.

IMO it's a bug: the driver comes from a trusted vendor, I'm in safe mode and, anyway, and an explicit allow rule is present.
Do you know if there is a specific reason for this?

If I enable TAM and allow a file to run (add an exception), I notice the file is added to the Low Restricted category on Application Control. Answer:Kaspersky Application Control Setting???

Hardening privilege control mode
Most of the widely used programs are automatically placed in the Trusted category, because they either have a digital signature of the manufacturer, or are included in the KSN Allow list. This allows toughening the restrictions for the other programs: they can be automatically moved in the High Restricted orUntrusted category. In the latter case, KES will automatically block the start of unknown programs that have no digital signature and for which there are no allowing rules within the policy. If a program necessary for work is blocked, you can configure an exclusion for it.Click to expand...

Set to untrusted for any unsigned application instead of heuristics analyzer by default that chances are going to low restricted or high restricted which sometimes can execute the program in all matters.

Everytime I start my PC this message pops up

I always click Make Trusted so that it will move it to the trusted group but it just keeps on popping up!

It also tends to pop up when I am watching TV via Media Centre and there are the odd occassions when others pop up ie Windows Search, msn etc.

I assume it is not being moved into the trusted group (otherwise it wouldnt continue to keep popping up every hour or so) but I am not sure how to do this manually.

To be honest, I am not even sure what this application is!

Any advise would be greatly appreciated.

Check this, taken from online help of K2017:

Change trust group for applications started before startup of Kaspersky Total Security

Clicking this link opens the Trust group for applications started before startup of Kaspersky Total Security window. In this window, you can change the trust group for applications started before startup of Kaspersky Total Security. Network activity of applications started before the startup of Kaspersky Total Security is controlled according to rules of the selected trust group.

Win 10 64 Pro Anniversary Build Latest Update
Kaspersky Internet Security 2017 Latest Update
No other RealTime security software.

My portable programs SecurMyBit, VidCoder, etc... were under "Low Restricted" in Application Control.
I move them to "Trusted" in AC.
After couple of days, the programs rules are neither in "Trusted" or "Low Restricted".
When I run the programs, they appear under "Low Restricted" And I again move them to "Trusted" But after couple of days the same mentioned above i.e the programs rules are neither in "Trusted" or "Low Restricted".

Is it a bug or bug on Win 10 64 or bug in KIS 2017 or ............?

Any info?

Any Kaspersky users experience the above?

Answer:Kaspersky Application Control - KIS 2017 bug?

Theoretically speaking, if different types of malware files where to penetrate past Kapsersky's protection and get placed into "Low Restricted", how much damage is possible under default settings?

Answer:Kaspersky Policy Based Application Control

Theoretically speaking, damage same as trusted group. Low restricted is basically trusted group in default settings (Automatic mode). Application control is for interactive mode, in which the prompts gets issued, then Low restricted is useful as much as the user knows.

I like the feature Kaspersky has that allows you to see installed programs and trusted status. Unfortunately, I prefer ESET instead of Kapsersky for my AV. I don't think ESET has a good application manager (a way to view installed .exe, .dll, ...etc. in one list and their reputation status). Is there another program out there that can do a similar job?

Example:

Was playing Xenoverse 2 on my Lenovo z50-75 (AMD-A10 7300 RADEON R6 GRAPHICS WINDOWS 10 HOME 64BIT 8GB). It was on on charge and I unplugged it. Then there is a BSOD and laptop restarts. I have run bluescreen view & whocrashed. Results say "Thread stuck in driver -atikmdag.sys" and "Thread stuck in driver m - dxgkrnl.sys" Tried using DDU in safe mode to completely uninstall AMD graphic driver and reinstall no luck. Updated BIOS still no luck. This happens whilst gaming and unplugging charger. It does not happen when I am running the game without the charger. Also whenever I am not using the charger the game lags and is sloppy. However, I realized that I set [On battery] ATI PowerPlay Settings to Maximum Performance in power options. Now the BSOD happens when I plug in the charger and unplug it. I think this BSOD is something to do with that option. If I remove maximize performance and choose the option maximize battery life the BSOD does not occur. However, I do not want to remove the option because the game lags and is slow when I do.

I was using unity on my laptop with a 1280x800 resolution and i noticed everything was cramped. I want to go beyond my max resolution to 1440x900 but when I was changing my settings in the nvidia control panel, it gave me a warning that it may break my monitor or corrupt the bios. I haven't changed anything yet. Is it safe to change the settings?

Answer:Safe To Increase Resolution Beyond Maximum Settings?

If you set it outside of the maximum of what your panel can support, you'll get an Out Of Range message on your display - or in the case with a laptop, probably just a black screen. Then you'd have to boot into VGA Mode in Windows in order to fix/reset the resolution.

If you want a higher res than what your built-in panel can support...you'll need to either use an external monitor that supports a higher res, or replace the panel itself with a higher res version, if one is available. You can check https://www.laptopscreen.com/ for replacement/compatible panels for your laptop brand/model.

Hey,

do you tweak your settings after installation? I wonder if the default settings are "strong" enough against threads and 0 day detection. Is the performance impact huge?

Answer:Kaspersky IS settings?

Based on my observation and numerous guides for tweaking, default settings are already good at primetime and one of the major feature is so called Application Control Privilege which you can control by blocking all unknown programs as Untrusted instead of by checking on heuristics analyzer.

Others from web filter by enabling geolocation feature for adding such information to its blocking effectiveness then the rest by changing the sensitivity level of protection.

Is it possible in Windows 7 Home 64-bit to increase the native volume available for speakers. In other words elevate the volume over the defaulted maximum that comes with the software?

I am having problems with the volume when I am using headsets. With all gages set to maximum volume both in speakers control and the actual headset volume it is still inefficient., as in not high enough..

Is there any form to tinker and manually overrule those settings?

I would appreciate any knowledgeable contributions.

Thank you kindly

Answer:Volume control settings: can maximum be manually overruled?

I found a way of increasing the volume, right click on sound icon in taskbar/click playback devices/
mark your playback device which has a tick/click properties/and you will see this image click enhancements
and enable loudness equalization.
You can check to see if it makes any difference by clicking the preview button.
I just did this myself and it increased the volume quite a bit.
Good luck.

Hello, I'm new to the forums, so far I'm pretty pleased with my laptop - Lenovo Thinkpad T510, but today my battery icon in taskbar got a green cirle around it and it says: The battery is running in Maximum Lifespan mode. I dont know what is this means and what to do is it dangerous, is it normal, or what? In other places I read - that is completly fine when you use your laptop mainly on AC and dont use battery so often, but i'm getting scared because it lasts around 5 hours with wifi and display around 70% brightness, and now software says something like 4 or even worse - 3 hours of battery life. Should I leave it that way or is there something I need to do, but I dont know about it? Thanks.

ThinkPad-ed [T510]

Answer:Thinkpad T510 - Maximum lifespan mode

In Maximum Lifespan mode, it slightly reduces your battery runtime by not totally charging your battery to 100%. This should keep your battery in better condition later in the future. If your battery runtime is low, check the existing battery wear. Also try to close as many background programs that you don't need; these can consume a lot of battery.

Does anyone use Kaspersky PURE 2.0 and if so have you tried the GRC Leak Test? If so what results did you get? I'm not sure if it just has a weak firewall or if I need to change some settings. Thanks.

Answer:Kaspersky PURE firewall settings....

Hi socom,I'm guessing that you're concerned why Kaspersky's firewall fails the stealth test at GRC?Kaspersky believe stealth mode does not offer any additional protection. Been this way for some time. Nothing to worry about, their Firewall is one of the best.Particularities of the firewall in version 2009No stealth modeFirst thing some users will notice is that there is no stealth mode. This can be observed on tests like Shields Up or PC Flank. Having no stealth mode does not make you vulnerable, it simply means that your PC will report an error when an outside pc attempts to connect to you (in stealth mode it will do nothing). While this may seem good, it's not, the automated attacks like port scans or various worms are not interested, they will probe random IP addresses whether they are stealthed or not (a good example is Helkern, even if the firewall is stealthed the Intrusion Detection System still blocks Helkern attempts to infiltrate the PC).Also stealth mode can create problems with different Server type applications, P2P applications or even file transfers on certain programs. If you insist on having stealth mode go to the Network Packages section and set these rules to block: Any Incoming TCP stream Any Incoming UDP stream ICMP Reply(in)Also if you have a router it will stealth you and any changes you make in KIS will have no effect on the router's performance.http://forum.kaspersky.com/index.php?showtopic=67972&st=0&p=633287&#... I just installed the Kaspersky Anti Virus software and I have a couple of questions about the settings. According to the Kaspersky FAQ's the definitions are supposed to update every hour. I installed the AV software yesterday at this time and when I installed it I ran a manual Definition update to make sure I have the most recent Definitions. When I checked the computer today I noticed the program had not updated the Definitions which concerns me.

When I was looking around in the settings I notice that there is a setting that allows me to define when the program reaches out and checks for updated Definitions but according to Kaspersky it is supposed to do this on its own. I can set the program to check for updates to the definitions once a day but I don't want to cause a conflict within the Kaspersky software that will leave me without anti virus software. Has anyone else encountered this with the Kaspersky AV software?

Also, I see there are options to set automatic virus cans for both the Full scan and the Critical scan. Does Kaspersky default to an automatic scan or will I have to set up scans on my own?

Thanks all.

Hi,
I have to say that I hate Windows 10 action center and its notifications. Unfortunately Kaspersky uses in new versions action center notifications. I have tried to bring back old notifications style by Kaspersky but it doesn't work good. I mean, when I disable Kaspersky notifications in Windows 10 notifications settings, I don't get notifications at all, for example when I download EICAR test files. Only when I enable interactive mode to be asking me about decision, I get old-style notification. But with the automatic mode, there are no notifications. Is there any way to solve it, or maybe I have to use to Windows 10 notifications?

Answer:Kaspersky's notifications settings in Windows 10

Have you tried to disable (hide) the Action Centre, on Windows 10 AU or later.

Hi guys, I have been playing around with Power manager system settings and observed following core frequency behaviour: Maximum Turbo - clocks all cores close to their Turbo Frequency (3.2GHz on mine) and they stay there, regardless if                              under load or notTurbo - frequency jumps between 2.4GHz and 3.2GHz           - under load jumps to 3.2GHz and stays there (while under load) Balanced - frequency jumps between 2.2GHz and 2.7Ghz                 - under load jumps to 2.7GHz and stays there (while under load) Low - frequency locked to 800Mhz, regardless if under load or not First, I would like to ask for confirmation if this is really how it should work, and/or if someone is able to observe different behaviour.Secondly, there is virtually NOTHING in the PM documentation that describes these parameters and what they do! My main question: How safe is it to use the Maximum Turbo mode 24/7?I can imagine that this CPU was not designed to run on 3.2GHz 24/7 and that the Turbo Boost is expected to occur only ocassionally.Even if I choose to ignore the heat factor, would this mean increased wear on CPU? Could the 'Turbo' mode be regarded as safe? After some... Read more

Answer:Thinkpad T420s - is it safe to run the CPU on PM 'Maximum Turbo' mode 24/7?

I have the T420s with the Core i5 processor. My observations are similar to yours, except when I'm on the Balanced and Turbo settings, the frequency drops to 800mhz when the CPU is not under load. There is one option you forgot to describe: the "Lenovo Turbo Boost+" option in the power manager. This option appears to lock the fan at a high RPM to cool the CPU more quickly. This would reduce any thermal throttling when running at high clock speeds for a long period of time. Regarding why "Turbo seems to be jumping to Turbo Frequency when the CPU is idle", please note that your CPU is never completely idle. WIndows and its applications run many processes and tasks in the background, and it is normal to see a burst of CPU activity every couple of seconds. To observe this, download the "Sysinternals process monitor" utility and watch all of the background activity that occurs. Regarding the increased wear on CPU, running at high temperatures reduces the lifetime of electronic components. There are no problems other than the "heat factor", but excessive heat can be a significant problem.

Hello, My T61 was bought during March 2008. I recently installed CPU-Z and was bit worried since under maximum performance mode, the CPU was not throttling to full speed (with AC power). The core speed is showing approximately 1200MHz. FSB is showing around 800Mhz. It is a penryn T9300 processor and I believe it should be 2500Mhz. Is there a setting somewhere on the power options that needs to configured to attain the maximum core speed? OS is XP SP3 clean install. Thanks for any help, Regards,Thanimai

Hi, I am trying to block applications from accessing the network with KIS 2014 and for whatever reason the network rules are greyed out along with any other rules. Am I missing something, how do I change this?

Answer:Kaspersky 2014 Firewall settings greyed out

Hi:

Kaspersky 2014 was EOS/EOL a long time ago (except for database updates for a few more months).
http://support.kaspersky.com/us/supported_home

Version is not supportedSupported until: 08.01.2016Database updates supported until: 08.01.2017

Current version is 2017, although 2016 is still supported.

If you have a valid license that has not expired, you can upgrade for free.
The current policy is -1 to +3, so a 2014 license should work for either 2016 or 2017 (if it does not, you can contact Kaspersky support and they will work it out).

I suggest that you clean upgrade to a supported version.

The first and only bug so far I have encountered with my P51: Out of the box, the machine is set with the Hybrid mode in BIOS, meaning it switches between the Intel GPU and the Nvidia Quadro M2200 (Optimus). I want my machine to always use the discrete GPU, so I switch to Discrete mode in the BIOS. This however means that you can no longer change the screen brightness of the internal screen, it is always set at 100 %. Definitely seems like a driver bug. I have tried reinstalling Windows already, same result: With the Hybrid mode I can change the screen brightness, with the discrete mode I canīt.

Hi Everyone:

Kaspersky's firewall has the option to allow or block port 21 (FTP Server): does anyone here know if I can block this port and not have any problems, and will it increase the level of security?

Tony

Answer:Kaspersky Active FTP Mode....

When you want to copy files between two computers that are on the same local network, often you can simply "share" a drive or folder, and copy the files the same way you would copy files from one place to another on your own PC. If you do not use this type of sharing - you can safely block this port. I guess you do not use the FTP (File Transfer Protocol) You will not have any problems...and yes it will increase the level of security. However you can revert it at any time safely

The machine is pretty powerful (i7, 16GB RAM). What are the tweaks you would perform in Kaspersky Internet Security, currently in default settings?
I've read several topics about this but they are particulary dated.
Looking forward to your awesome answers

So I was just looking at that settings on Kaspersky Total Security 2015 and stumbled upon this..Block and warn about insecure transmission of passwords over the Internet.
With this option enabled, Kaspersky Internet Security will block an attempt to send a password within a none secure public or home Wi-Fi network.Does anyone use this feature or know about it? It's off by default..I mainly use my laptop at home but sometimes use public Wi-Fi such as cafes, hotels etc. or round other people's houses.. Is it really necessary? Or will it just limit me?

Answer:Firewall settings on Kaspersky Total Security 2015......

Hi Star It's a good thing to have it enabled by default if you asks me, since it could prevent your passwords from being sent over a network that have been compromised if a MiTM (Man in the Middle) attack have been setup. I suggest you to leave it enabled and if you have issues browing the web on your own network(s), then you can disable it and see if it works or add these networks as exceptions under Networks. Kaspersky posted a small article on their blog about Kaspersky Internet Security WiFi features, here:http://usblog.kaspersky.com/tip-stay-safe-wifi/Also, a review on 7Tutorials.com suggests you to enable that feature (at the end of it):http://www.7tutorials.com/security-everyone-reviewing-kaspersky-internet-security-2015

I need to run applicaiton with Admin right or it will not install properly, but the user of that machine is not Admin he is a simple user and I cannot provide him the Admin password. The users install/unistall the that appliation on the daily basis, how can I achieve this thing without sharing the Admin pswd. Because right now I have to use "Run As" command and then run that application with the Admin rights, but this is very tedious. Any ideas?

I put KIS 2018 in interactive mode, moved MS Word to "low restricted" category in Application Control, and allowed it to use network.
When I opened a Word doc, I got a number of prompts, which was to be expected.
But the thing that surprised me was I got no prompts at all when I used the "email" command and the "print" command, even though both of them execute external processes. What's up with that? Do I need to move Word to high restricted, if I want to monitor its activities?

Adding processes to Low and High Restricted will expose a number of annoying bugs. You can ask @harlan4096 because I submitted quite few through him to Kaspersky.

But go ahead, you should test and see for yourself.

28th December 2010 my yahoo email account was hacked and sent out seven spam messags to my contacts.

No virus found when AVG ran.

7 January 2011 lots of AntiVirus popups trying to run program and asking to buy full product. Pop-ups don't respond to the x close button only respond to No button (which I'm worried could continue the infection). Any attempt to run any program comes up with dialogue box saying file is infected. Branding of the boxes/messages/pop-ups looks like Microsoft, but I run AVG and besides, they're not quite right. No idea of which software it is. Therefore presume it's a Trojan.

Rebooted in safe mode. Downloaded Kaspersky's Virus Removal Toolkit. It finds the following trojans: Ransom.Win32.PinkBlocker,
Downloader.Java.OpenConnection.cg,
Downloader.Java.OpenConnection.cf,
Downloader.Java.Agent.al
Downloader.Java.Agent.al
Exploit.Java.Agent.f
Exploit.Java.Agent.f

Yes - two instances each of Java.Agent.f and .al not a mistake in posting.

Prompted to delete Trojans by Kaspersky which I did.

Restart to normal mode and pop-ups are still there.

Restart in safe mode, Re-run Kaspersky brt nothing found.

All attempts to start in normal mode result in pop-ups. Screen shots can be provided if required (and if it's possible to take the screenshot...).

Came here, followed your guide.

Hi, I'm looking for an answer about the lifespan and maximum runtime of battery. A ThinkPad battery can be set up for maximum runtime (hours), or for maximum lifespan before it must be replaced (years). The choice is yours, but with today's battery technologies, you can't have both at the same time.Whichever optimization you choose, the limitations of today's batteries technologies also mean that they are consumables, i.e. your ThinkPad will last longer than its battery! This is clear for me that i can't have both actualy my charge settings are : start at 60% stop at 80%. This settings are for a better life span, but will this option decrease my fully charge capaticty for ever ? What will happend when i after 2 months will charge my battery to 100%,  and change settings to maximum runtime ? Will the battery remember another lower (last) capacity as is should have ? Will the maximum lifspan settings have a big influence later on maximum runtime when i change the settings ? Thanks for any info. Brgds,m4ki

Terry, welcome to the forum. Here is what the specs say about maximum memory: The memory sockets on the system board can be populated with up to four industry-standard DIMMs. These memory sockets are populated with at least one preinstalled DIMM.  To achieve the maximum memory support, you can populate the system board with up to 4GB of memory configured in a high-performing dual channel mode. Here is the Hardware Reference Guide for the computer.  You will find the above information on Page 25. The maximum hard drive size with Win 7 is 2TB. Please click the Thumbs up + button if I have helped you and click Accept as Solution if your problem is solved.

Aloha,
Our problem has been going on for several days now...as I said in the thread title, my 'puter seems to stall in both normal mode and safe mode at the screen "Windows is loading your personal settings".
I've tried six different times this a.m. to boot up, 3 times normal mode, 3 times safe mode. If I can't boot up in Safe Mode I'm lost as to how to start any kind of repair or even system restore.
The system is a Dell dimension 4600 with 512 RAM, dual HD & WXP-SP2. The only users are my wife and myself. I have not assigned a password to the Admisistrator account and we use a common logon screen with no password for ease of use. We do have Guest Account enabled.
Our Firewall and Anti-virus protection is Zone Alarm. Our maintenance routine is to run the following: 1) daily, Spybot S & D, AdAwareSE, A-squared, Window Washer, 2) weekly, Registry Mechanic, 3) monthly, Win Disk defrag and Win Disk cleanup.
Recently, I was in Spybot system tools and opened startup and found a file titled hblogon. I did a google search and found this to be a trojan. My wife followed explicit instructions for its removal and was succesful as far as she knows.
Now in all this info if you've lost track of what my question is...How do I get into the system to boot up without entry via safe mode??? I have not been able to follow your explanations about entering boot.ini in other threads.
I anxiously await someones reply.

Hello I was using the night mode option available on Lenovo Settings, which then had a option to turn it on or off. After Windows 10 updated, Windows now has a night mode option, but the Lenovo Settings one is still working and I can't deactivate it because there is no longer a option. At night, the screen become so red all the black parts on the screen look like blood.  Removing Lenovo Settings solve this, but I need the configurations available on Lenovo Settings, so I can't uninstall it.  Is there a way to deactivate the Lenovo Settings night mode after this update, knowing there is no longer the toggle option in the interface? A configuration file or registry I should remove or a command I should use? Thank you.

Dear forumers,

I have an issue with a non-unicode program. I want to learn to type the Russian standard keyboard layout (ЙЦУКЕН) so have an application which teaches me called Anykey 1.02 Demo. The problem is that this is not a fully unicode application and since my system is not set to russian at Control Panel -> Regional Settings -> Advanced tab, Anykey won't display cyrillic letters correctly, it shows questionmarks instead. Of course, it'd be simple to just set up the system run non-unicode applications in Russian, but it also messes up everything (another non-unicode apps). It's not really comfortable to restart the system every time I want to practice by Anykey, so I'm asking if there's any way to run an application (only one, separately from the other) with different non-unicode settings (eg. a command or *.manifest file or sg.)?

Thanks for your help

When you update to the cloud (which is what One drive is), it normally defaults to the primary user, which I assume is your wife.
If you want your own cloud use try using a Gmail account and Gmail Drive.

Hello,

I am using a custom windows 7 theme that uses my preferred combination of window color choices etc.

However, this color scheme does become an inconvenience when I am working in certain applications like Autodesk and Photoshop as it makes their respective UI's very obscure.

Is there a way to exempt certain applications from personalization settings?

Thanks,
Mongol

Answer:How to exempt an application from personalization settings

Welcome to the Seven Forums
You are going to get that with a custom theme and some programs look just fine while others do not. You will need to either find a new custom theme or switch to the default Aero theme when using those programs.

Greetings,
We applied some UAC settings via Group Policy to all Windows 7 machines. Now some old applications are throwing up a prompt and the users normal credentials wont run the app. The point is that the app DID NOT require admin privileges before we applied
the settings. The users were able to launch the app without prompts and run it successfully.
Does anyone know which security or UAC setting may be causing this? Remember that the apps ran perfectly well before these settings were applied  without an administrative account.
Thanks

Hello, I'm using a combination of the Vista backup to do a complete backup of my OS and applications (for emergency restore) and another backup tool to handle my data.

My OS is on C: and my data on D: (and other drives).

My query is that C: will contain application settings/data - for example if I write actions in Photoshop they will be stored under the user application data subdirectory or if I create a DOT template for Word it will be stored under the hidden data directories for Word.

I want to be sure that I am backing up all of the vital application data/settings so that I can either restore just those or in an emergency can restore my full Vista backup (done weekly) and then restore the application data (which I want to backup daily).

I've searched this set of forums and elsewhere to find something that lists which subdirectory tree(s) I need to ensure that I have backed up (and I guess I'll need to do a registry backup too each day just in case settings are stored there). I can't find such a list.

Does anyone know of a document that details what the vital stuff to backup is?

Thanks.

Answer:Application data/settings backup

If you need to backup Photoshop, you need to find it's directory (probably under Adobe), and for Word it's probably under Microsoft or Office. Another option is to simply backup the entire AppData folder, that way you can't miss anything.

If you're talking about a large-scale backup for your whole system, you will probably want to backup drivers as well (you only need to back these up once, all the drivers are installed in C:\swsetup, but I prefer just saving the installer files).

I reinstalled my OS multiple times, with my personal data on another drive. What I backed up from my C drive was:

Select folders from AppData (only for programs' settings that I wanted to backup)Fonts that I had collected over time (C:\Windows\Fonts)Themes that I had collected over time (C:\Windows\Resources\Themes)Custom Power Plans (exported/imported through powercfg.exe in command prompt)Start Menu folder, for lots of links I created (AppData\Roaming\Microsoft\Windows\Start Menu - Private Profile, C:\ProgramData\Microsoft\Windows\Start Menu - Public Profile)Certain folders in Program Files of older programs that I run as Administrator for compatibility purposes (programs that need Administrator privileges to save stuff in Program Files)I did not backup the registry in anyway, because the registry changes I made were saved as .reg files. Other registry changes are made while installing programs (which after a clean install will be done anyway)
What you think is vital to backup depends on your s... Read more

I have a problem in that a few applications arent remebering their settings each time I restart my pc (win xp pro sp2). Also, i had set winamp to dock in minimised mode to top of the screen but when i reboot it appears undocked half way down the screen. Anyone any ideas why? I'm suspicious there is one windows settings file for all apps that should be saving these settings but isn't doing its job?

I am running Windows 7 Ultimate 32-bit.
I have a 16 bit application that I developed with Borland Turbo C++ on XP.
I have installed XP mode and reloaded Borland and my application, but when I try to run it, nothing appears to happen.
When I run it under the Borland Debugger I get the message:

An application has attempted to access the keyboard or mouse hardware as a 16 bit Windows application, which cannot be supported. This may cause the application to function incorrectly.

This comes after my latest reinstall of W7 after some very strange errors started cropping up.
This never happened in previous installs of XP Mode.
I have also installed my copy of XP SP3 using VirtualBox, and have got exactly the same message.

I originally saw this message when I installed the Borland software on W7 and tried to run it from there, but it has ALWAYS worked in XP Mode in the past.

What has changed?
