Computer screen black. How to fix?

Question: Computer screen black. How to fix?

The computer powers on, the fans spin on but a couple of mins later the fans turn off.
The monitor screen is totally black..no post up happens.
There are not post up beeps to trouble shoot.

Now after all my trial and error work on the computer, after putting it back together and saving the
data, it started up. It continued to start up and work fine for 1 day. now it is back to having a
black screen again.

Any one have any sugggestions?I am beginning to think it is a motherboard short?

thank you for your help in advance

Preferred Solution: Computer screen black. How to fix?

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

HI,
I was being helped by Quads on the norton community. I know he helps out here too. Quads was helping me but I screwed up, thought I was helping to save time(yes, I know I saved you alot of time now) but I did not follow complete instructions.

This is what was done so far

OTL scan was run

adwcleaner was run

had adwcleaner delete all and reboot

ran combofix

when computer was rebooting it got stuck on the black screen for about an hour

Had to restart it again and when it did it restored to a previous date

This is where I screwed up

Since it was a previous date it seemed like nothing had taken place, no downloads on the desktop.

Ran the otl scan again

adwcleaner again, log looked the same as first time so I deleted all again

Ran combofix and rebooted and it gave me a log

That is where I am stuck, I dont know whether to leave these downloads on the computer, delete them

I dont think that Quads is going to help me anymore since I messed up, so I was wondering if anyone else could help. I just really want to finish what was started. The computer was stuck on the black screen this morning and finally got it restarted after about 5 times. But I do think there is some kind of virus. Still have adwcleaner and combofix downloaded on the computer. Dont know if I should delete them or what.

Thanks

Kim

Hello, originally my problem is that my internet browsers (Internet explorer, firefox) can not display any kind of pages because of some kind of virus. Also I had some kind of fake Microsoft Security Essentials (MSE) asking me to download more fake AV's onto my computer but I knew well enough that it was fake so I close it. This also shows up in safe mode. MSE block me from opening things such as iexplorer.exe or sometimes it would say tskmanager is a virus and it wouldn't let me open anything. So eventually I google this up, and I read somewhere that told me to rename hotfix.exe to hotfix1.exe when I run %APPDATA% so the annoying MSE would stop showing up. It also told me to update my Malwarebyte which I still can not do because I still do not have access to the internet. By the way I am using another computer to type this. So again, I tried to do some more research to fix my internet problem and I found this site that told me to download KillGodzilla.exe and run it and reboot my computer, after that I should update my Malwarebyte but of course, I can't do that because after the WINDOWS loading screen, the blue log in screen doesn't show and displays a black screen which flickers sometimes, after a few minutes it would restart my computer. Also same thing for safe mode. Does anyone know what is going on? Did I screw up my computer to badly? Do I need to reset my BIOS? I am using Windows XP if that helps. I also hav ESET smart security on my computer but I can... Read more

A friend of mine started having a problem with his old dual core computer where the computer seemed like it was booting up but the screen stayed black. This started when he got back from a weeks vacation and found out he lost power in his house. The power was back on when he got home but he could tell with clock being wrong, and neighbors telling him about the outage. He leaves his computer on all the time and when he got home he saw that it was off. When he booted up the only thing he could get was a screen with the XFX logo from the maker of his Geforce GTX 460 video card. Sometimes he wouldn't even get that, just a black screen.
He also connects his usb keyboard in the front and hit the connect to his computer and bent up the keyboard usb connector. I got him another keyboard and replaced the PSU thinking maybe with the power outage the PSU was effected. The computer seemed to boot up and work. Problem is it only worked for about a day (he played video games all day). That night he started with the problem again of black screen.
I thought maybe it was the motherboard then ( the system is an older dual core from 2007), so he purchased the following:

Gateway ModelX4870-UB318
SKU: 6835451
Windows 8 64-bit
Technical details: 3rd Gen Intel® Core? i5 processor; 8GB memory; 1TB hard drive

Re: Screen goes black. Bought new computer and installed video card and still screen

If a new computer begins to exhibit behavior from the old one, I'd remove the commonalities between the both.

You really should have tested the new computer with the onboard GPU and PSU first. Now you need to remove those two and put it back to the original config and test it.

It is also possible that the PSU isn't enough for the video card, if it is multirail and 450W, or low quality PSU. However, it seems more likely if that was the cause, the computer would shut off, not go to a black screen.

I am thinking the computer is slow because the driver or video card or something is not working right.  My problem is.  I had this Lenovo computer for a couple of years now.  I just bought a 23" HP S2331a  flat screen monitor.  What do you need to know for me to be able to fix the problem I am having?  The information on the side of the tower is 3000 H210 57091130, Intel GMA3100 graphics.  I am not sure why the computer is doing what is it doing, but I hope you can help me more than HP. The black screen issue happens on startup.  I can see things on the screen up until the login screen attempts to come up and then the screen does not recognize a signal.  I bypass this currently by connecting the old crt screen on until I log in.  Then reconnect the HP screen and wahlah it works.  I can't change the resolution or anyhting like that...... Any thoughts on corredting this so I cna have a working monitor and not have to keep the old crt unit around on startup?Mark

Last night I downloaded a file from a Torrent site - Blackberry stuff (I'm pretty sure most or all was freeware stuff). I just noticed that that file has been removed. Kinda unfortunately because I did leave a comment on what happened to me and I asked if anyone else had the same issue. I'm guessing maybe they did because it is gone now.

I ran my AVG scan on it before opening it. It didn't find anything so I ran the executable. It locked up at one point after I started getting virus warnings from some new program (I did not write down what any of it was :-( ).

I had to do a hard shutdown. When it came up to my choices window, i.e. choose Safe Mode, Last Know, etc. I was unable to make any selections with my keyboard so it continued to boot Windows normally. The XP splash screen comes on and then the screen turns black with nothing further happening.

I can do a hard reboot but I can't get into Safe Mode because the keyboard isn't working and normal windows isn't working either.

Got any suggestions? Do I have some serious funk? Did some piece of hardware decide to stop functioning properly (power supply)?

I have been Googling this issue without any success. Sometimes it feels like you are the only one to ever have a particular issue.

This happened very late last night and now I am at work so I'm not able to touch it for the next 5 hours or so. The only two things that I can do right now is go into the BIOS settings or watch it go into Windows and then get the... Read more

I recently upgraded to Windows 10 from the taskbar on my desktop. The upgrade was successful and I was able to use my computer normally. Today, when I started my computer, a disk check was started. After a long time of being stuck at 10%, I force booted the computer off. Now, the computer boots past the Windows 10 logo and goes to a black screen with the cursor. This screen appears before the login screen does. I am able to move the mouse but that is the limit of my control. The mouse is also showing the little blue loading circle next to it blinking over and over.

hi all, a recent problem has occurred with my computer. whilst playing games, i can play for a few minutes, and then a black screen appears, with sound looping and the screen status colour changes from solid green to flickering green. This is XP Professional by the way.My system is as follows:P5N-E Sli MoboC2D E750 2.66ghz2.0 gb ramXFX 8800GTS 320mbThe games in which this occur are as follows:Team Fortress 2Grand Theft Auto: San AndreasThe Elder Scrolls IV: OblivionGuild WarsHowever, what is strikingly odd about this problem is that it only occurs about 80% of the time. Yesterday, I managed to play Guild Wars, Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic 2, Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas and The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion absolutely perfectly.I have searched forums, and it seems this can be linked to overheating, but my temperature gauge on the front of the computer says I run at about 30 C most of the time, and the computer itself is not hot inside at all. All fans are spinning fine, no dust.I have heard other issues such as graphics card drivers, and i have tried 3 different drivers, all of which did not overcome this problem.Could it possibly be sound drivers? Or possibly something wrong with the motherboard? Thanks in advance.Mod Edit: Topic moved to more appropriate forum~ TMacK

Dell vostro 220

My computer was lagging and wasn't connecting to the internet properly, and then it froze so I shut it down. When I started it back up, the BIOS loaded but then went to a blank black screen with a mouse. I can move the mouse around. It won't load any further. I've tried all the safe modes and it does the same thing. And I tried cleaning all the dust off the computer. I've tried waiting at that screen for longer than 3 hours. It just stays there.

It's possible that it's a virus but I don't know. How can I solve this problem? Because I can't get into the computer to do a system restore. Please help, thank you!

Your malware is a variant of this infection. Backdoor Trojans, IRCBots and Infostealers are very dangerous because they provide a means of accessing a computer system that bypasses security mechanisms and steal sensitive information like passwords, personal and financial data which they send back to the hacker. Remote attackers use backdoor Trojans as part of an exploit to to gain unauthorized access to a computer and take control of it without your knowledge. Read the Danger: Remote Access Trojans. If your computer was used for online banking, has credit card information or other sensitive data on it, you should immediately disconnect from the Internet until your system is cleaned. All passwords should be changed immediately to include those used for banking, email, eBay, paypal and online forums. You should consider them to be compromised. They should be changed by using a different computer and not the infected one. If not, an attacker may get the new passwords and transaction information. Banking and credit card institutions should be notified of the possible security breach.Although the backdoor Trojan has been identified and may be removed, your PC has likely been compromised and there is no way to be sure the computer can ever be trusted again. It is dangerous and incorrect to assume that because the backdoor Trojan has been removed the computer is now secure. Hiya to all who read this. My mom's computer screen will suddenly turn black. You can't do anything to bring it back except manual shut down. My Q is....monitor or video card? I believe I have my old video card that came with my computer that I could swap out to check, and I could always take over my monitor to check that also. Would there be anything else that may cause such a thing? Any advise or suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks,

Both good ideas.

Try swapping the monitor first, since you don't have to do as much work.

If you still have the problem, then swapping video cards would make sense.

I will be surfing the web or playing a game when my computer just goes to a black screen like it is not communicating with my monitor anymore. I have tried a diffrent video card, diffrent monitor and diffrent cord and still get the same problem.

It appears that it does not shut off as my hard drive is still spinning and one time when it was at the blackscreen I heard a sound of my router conenction being dropped and re-established.

I am thinking it might be the ram as one time when I couldn't get it to boot back up after doing this I removed and re-seated the ram and it was fine. I am not sure though as it is pretty new ram so I thought I'd run my log here first.

Any help will be much appreciated.

The computer that I have, had an operating system, motherboard and restore CDs that were innerconnected and then I changed the motherboard and the restore CDs stopped working. I then bought a new version of XP. This Version was professional and the old version was home edition. I got another old computer and tried to get age of empires 2 to run with a lan with the first computer described. I then concluded that microsoft wont allow different versions of windows to inner connect on a lan caming connection. I then decided to put the old motherboard back in the computer so the restore CD's should work again, and I then installed the other version of windows on the other old computer. I deleted the hard-drive of the motherboard first computer, and then reinstalled the installation CDs, because it failed to boot the first time before the hard-drive deletion. It is still failing to boot, and I am trying to delete the hard-drive again, incase I deleted the other one; (Because there was some swapping and some master/slave slot determining that had been forgotten by me.) Now when I say it doesn't boot, what I mean is, it shows the screen that states my graphic card, then scans for hard-drive, then it says "Found" or whatever it says, and then when it tries to load up window, it freezes at a black screen.

I hope you find the problem before I pull my hair out.

Hello,

I have a Compaq Presario CQ62 w/ AMD Processor. I've had it for about 2 years now, recently the screen has not turned on, it is black. I have tried a "hard reset" and it actually worked for a while, but when I tried to turn it back on, same problem occurred, the "hard reset" does not work anymore. The lights on the caps lock button keep blinking, and the power button light also turns on. I tried connecting to an external monitor and it does not work as well. What are the possibles reasons for this problem?

Thank you

Answer:Black Computer Screen

What do you mean by "not work as well"?

Well, if the external works fine, you LCD screen is shot, most likely a bad backlight. But if both you LCD and external don't work, that normally is a video card problem. Could also be another system fault.

This started happening recently, but Ill be on my computer sometimes playing games, sometimes just talking to people on AIM, and then out of nowhere the screen goes black. I click and hit the keyboard but nothing happens, the power is still on, but my screen is black and I'm forced to restart my computer. The only way that I have found that works is this: I unplug all the cords and take off the case, then I take a small vacume and just vacum the motherboard and video card, and then it will work for about 1 week. 1 week later I have to do the same thing.. its getting annoying. I have a Radeon 9600, XP, Pent 4, 1 gig of RAM. The computers about 1 year old.

Hey guys,

I've been having problems with my Dell Inspiron 6000 for a while now. It's a great computer when it works- which it rarely does.

I'm going to explain my problem:

--Basically when I start the computer it goes straight to black screen. Windows does not start-up.

--I've called the Dell people at least 6 times over the last few years, and they've talked me through reinstalling the operating system, which I do. After the operating system is reinstalled the computer usually works for a few weeks, then goes back to the black screen.

--I have a virus protector on the computer, so I don't think i'm just catching new virus' with every reinstallation.

--I'm really not sure what to do. Do I need a new motherboard, harddrive? I don't know, but it's odd because after I reinstall the operating system I do get a few weeks where it works properly... then it breaks down again.

Any advice would be great!

thanks

I have an FIC K7MNF-64 motherboard and I tried to install it into the computer I have been putting together but something isn't working. The first time I put everything together and turned it on a giant e came on the monitor, I'm guessing it's for emachines since the motherboard I am using is used in them a lot. After the e came up there was nothing, just black. I pushed every button people have told me to push to bring up the BIOS screen but nothing. Ever since that first time of turning it on not even the e screen will show up. I can hear the computer booting up but I see nothing on the monitor. The monitor power button always flashes like its on standby and its not getting anything from the computer. Also there is a beeping noise that repeats and repeats when I turn the computer on. I looked up the BIOS beep codes but it didn't have anything for the beeping that I hear. The only thing I bought used is the motherboard. I was wondering if there is any configurations I have to do for the motherboard to get it to work. Any special installation CD to configure it to the cpu?? I just need to get this computer working since my laptop stopped working. Any help would be greatfully appreciated.

hp computer about 1 year old windows 7 wouldnt power on yesterday tried day after powers on now but screen is black and wireless wont turn on

Answer:computer screen black

This wouldn't happen to be a few days after the warranty ran out would it???Seriously, from your brief description, this a number of things, but I would first think power supply. If this is still under warranty (or extended warranty), you should bring it in for warranty service while you still have it. If you are going to diagnose this and need our help, please include model and more details including any changed to hardware (upgraded video card, etc), recent changes to software, recent problems, and more details on what you see and hear (fans, lights, beeps, monitor lights, etc.You have to be a little bit crazy to keep you from going insane.

Hi everyone! I'm not sure if I am posting this in the correct forum, but I need your help!

I have an old (meaning I got it in 2000) Gateway Essential. It was working fine until Monday afternoon. My mom was using it and the screen went black. The monitor was still on and the power light on the tower was on, but it wasn't doing anything. When I restarted the computer, it brings up an error with my GoBack feature, saying that there could be a corrupt file in some software or a problem with the drive. It says to go through scandisk, which I do and it goes through and starts up fine. Then if I try running the anti-virus, log on to AOL to go on line, it will work for a few minutes, and then the same thing happens again. I restart it again and go through the whole process. I've run the defragger, uninstalled AOL and my Kodak Easyshare software and my Scanner Software, and am still having issues. I'm not sure what to try next--I'm not sure if its a software thing or a virus. Any and all help would be appreciated. Thank you!

I have a toshiba labtop M35X-S309, the computer is on, but the screen is black.  I have tried clicking the Fn and F5 to try to go through screen options, pushed on the little white (screen on and off) button, putting in the recovery CD, try to restart in safe mode, the safe mode screen won't even come on.  Does anyone have any other recommendations???

Answer:computer on screen black

If you tilt the screen at an angle or put a light to it, can you see anything on it?It is possible the blacklight is damaged.

Hello,

I have recently bought a barbones kit from TigerDirect and got it all hooked up and running. Worked great for 2days then before I went to work today as I was logged into World Of Warcraft the screen went full orange then black. Computer stayed on just black screen and no response from the keyboard and mouse. So I decide ok its not going to come back on turn it off. Turn it back on fans kick on everything sounds like its going to get back up and going but.... Screen just stays black nothing is going to it. So I call up my buddy who knows a few things about computers and he says to go ahead and switch the ram around. I switch it around to vaious spots doesn't work. He says ok take the video card out and try another or use onboard video. The motherboard I have has an onboard so I take out the video card and try the onboard same thing nothing on the screen. By this time im running out of time before work so he says to unplug the unplug the power and the atx plugs in the mobo and let it sit while im at work. 4hours pass I come back home plug it all back in try again fail. So I think ok well lets see if this ram really does work throw it into my second computer here and it loads up just fine. So as I see it right now it is not the ram. so we are down to it either being the CPU, MOBO, Video Card or Power supply. I am in the process right now of taking the cmos out and from what I have read from my Mobo Manual I have it set to reset the cmos right now as well.

i've had a laptop for 8 year now (Evesham Voyager X5) and about 3 years back, knocked it off a table which messed up the screen so it wouldn?t light up. however everything else works fine on it and i?ve been hooking it up to an old block monitor, but i find it annoying now as i have lots of valuable software on the machine. i?m not too great on the hardware side of computing, however i did a bit of research today, watched some utube videos and found out it?s most likely either the inverter or backlight gone bust. the thing is though, as the computer so old, i can?t seem to find anything about its spec and i was wondering if it matter what make/model inverter i bought if i was to buy one too the computer's voltage and the lcd screen it has on it already?

Answer:Old computer and black screen!

I would say it's more likely screen/backlight.
If it was just the inverter, the screen would still work but be very dim (almost black).
Shine a torch to see if you can see anything.
When I knocked my 2 yr old laptop (3 months at time) off an 18" side table onto carpet, it actually cracked the screen fairly obviously.
New screen cost me £70 from amazon
They are bit cheaper now, but you might have trouble with an 8 yr old laptop.
Replacement was easy for me (I am an electronic engineer). There are loads of Youtube vids and of course mfrs Service and Maintenance Manual Guide pdfs to help.
If you are practical, it is certainly doable.
But if pennies allow, you might want to consider a new laptop and connect your old Hard Drive in a caddy via USB to transfer everything over.
Old applications won't transfer, but there are lots of Freeware sites for most things (unless you have something special)

Hi all,First post!  My Dad's Lenovo laptop goes to a black screen when starting up, so is unusable.I haven't seen it in the flesh yet but have started to research things for him and have found that 'black screen' shows up quite a lot for Windows 10 and Lenovo PCs! We were so impressed with my Dad's PC I've ended up with the same model myself:Lenovo YOGA 500 Convertible Laptop, Intel Core i7, 8GB RAM, 256GB SSD, 15.6" Touch Screen. Also labelled as: Yoga 500-15IBD Laptop (ideapad)  I see some people mentioning hardware failures and others device driver problems with the graphic card etc. but haven't read a definite cause/fix for this so far. I've just found this recent critical BIOS update for this PC which mentions the black screen problem:Software name: BDCN63WW Version 63[Important updates] Fix Win 10 lid close black screen issue.http://support.lenovo.com/gb/en/products/Laptops-and-netbooks/Yoga-Series/yoga-500-15ibd/downloads/D...I haven't seen this mentioned in the forums? Has anyone else used this?If the PC always boots to a black screen I'll obviously have trouble installing this! I'm hoping that it will boot in Safe Mode or I'm going to have some trouble installing it?! I don't know whether to install the BIOS update on my own machine which is running fine - I think I'll wait until I see my Dad's laptop first which will be in a few weeks. Has anyone had any experience of this BIOS update or other comments on this?Thanks. &nb... Answer:Yoga 500 'BLACK SCREEN' - BIOS update: "[Important updates] Fix Win 10 lid close black screen issue"

I'm still wondering about this... I've just updated the Lenovo Companion after seeing it mentioned in another thread. It looks like this s/w is supposed to scan the PC and recommend Lenovo updates - critical and nice to have ones. Initially the Companion was showing a critical update for Lenovo SHAREit and a recommended one for my BIOS. It says I'm currently on BDCN28WW and offered something like v61 and not the 63 I mentioned in my first post? After letting it update SHAREit and re-scanning the BIOS update is no longer being offered and still shows me on v28 ??? I'm not sure I trust this 'Companion' app!My laptop seems to be running fine so I don't want to break it updating the BIOS if it's not required. For all I know my Dad's broken one may be broken because it upgraded?! Does anyone else use/trust the Companion app?And has anyone else seen it change it's mind on recommended BIOS updates? Thanks.

Answer:Computer turns on, but black screen :(

Inverters and bad backlights can be hard to diagnose without just replacing the parts but it sounds as one or the other is out/going out.
If you check these out yourself, good luck. Laptops are a bear and unless you've done a few, a repair shop may be best.
Good luck.

Hello!Recently I got Avast AV and it said that I had a virus and so on, Something about Kavos and a rootkit, so it tried deleting it, but failed, told me it was gonna do a boot scan, so it did that, found the viruses and when i logged back into windows, same thing, it found the viruses. So I read that Trend Micro Systems is better then Avast so I uninstalled Avast and installed Trend Micro Systems Pro 2009, at that point I did a update for the new AV I had and it told me to restart to complete the update, so I do that, but once my computer starts and it says Toshiba, it tells me to choose between: Safe Mode, Safe Mode with networking, Safe Mode with Command Prompt, Last known good config, or start windows normally, if I choose last known good configuration or start normally, my screen goes black, and I never reach the windows logo with the bar, if I choose safe mod, I get a bunch of text, and the text just stays there.Any help is GREATLY appreciatedMuch Thanks

I have a HP laptop, the model number is dv9925nr incase anyone needs it, and as soon as i turn on the laptop the screen is black and stays black, as if the computer is still off. I have turned it on when it is plugged in and the computer is fully charged and tried many other ways and even waiting to see if it reappears but nothing has worked. I know it is on because all of the blue lights are on and you can hear the computer running. My first thought is that the screen is going and needs to be replaced but if anyone knows any ways to fix this without having to take it into a store or go to that extent and there is an easier way could you please write back. it would be greatly appreciated!

Okii dokii. I was sitting there playing Half-Life 2 (It's not spammed or virused or anything, I've had it for a year now) and right in the middle of my game the screen goes totally black, and a bar at the top left corner is blinking, like it's waiting for me to type something. So I hit the Windows key. Nothing happens. Control+Alt+Delete, again, nothing happens. I went into a frenzy and hit everything on my keyboard, and still nothing happened! I know it's still connected and on and stuff, 'Cos whenever I hit like Control+C or something it'll beep. I can't reboot, I have other important things on there. Like essays that took me weeks to work on. And science fair. (which I negected to save...) So. Anyone know what to do?

Hi
I noticed that my downloads speeds were abysmal and that the problem was that my hard drive was running at 1% to 2% while in a download. This meant that I was getting 1.1 mg/s download speed. So I changed the sata cable connected to the hard drive and change it to the first port in the motherboard. this fixed the problem. I was getting 5 to 6 mg/s download speeds but when I started playing any game my monitor went black and on the screen would say "no signal". I changed the sata cable back where it was originally plugged and the problem at first seemed fixed but I still have the 1.1 mg/s download speed. Then the problem with my monitor returned. Also I noticed that every time I booted my pc my internet connection started connecting and disconnected fore a few minutes and then connected. I tried every sata port on the motherboard and the problem persisted. I tried reinstalling windows 10 and nothing. I changed the sata cable and nothing. In another forum somebody said that it could be a problem with my motherboard. I would like to know for surten before I change it.

ps sorry for my bad English, not my first language.

I just recently bought a new 64gb SSD and installed it into my computer as the case manufacturer said in the instructions. I did everything as planned, then plugged my computer back in, to turn it on and get a black screen. No bios or anything. I tried plugging it into my alternate display to see if that was the issue, and it was not the issue. I later tried booting the computer without the SSD plugged in which yeilded the same result as before. I hope to get help soon so i can get my rig running and install my Windows 8 onto it.

*NOTE: if this post is in the incorrect section of the forums, i ask that a moderator move it to the section that is right.

Answer:Computer getting black screen after installing new SSD.

Eh, I don't know what you did and it doesn't even really matter.

Here's what to do.

1) Power off.

2) Remove SSD physically.

3) Boot to Windows.

4) Follow this:
Exit all Windows-based programs.Click Start, type regedit in the Start Search box, and then press ENTER.If you receive the User Account Control dialog box, click Continue.Locate and then click one of the following registry subkeys: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\CurrentControlSet\Services\Msahci

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\CurrentControlSet\Services\IastorV
In the right pane, right-click Start in the Name column, and then click Modify. In the Value data box, type 0, and then click OK.On the File menu, click Exit to close Registry Editor.

5) Power Off.

6) Re-attach SSD.

7) Boot to bios.

8) Change the SATA mode to AHCI and save.

9) Boot to Windows.

10) Format the new SSD.

11) Research for yourself the best care procedures for it.

I have a HP computer with XP and every time I leave and shut it down for several days I cannot boot back up. I was gone for 3 1/2 days. I shut the computer down during my leave. I came back and started it back up and it was fine for about 1 hour and then went to black screen every since. I have had this happen in the past and did all - the unplug keyboard/ mouse etc and got it started but no sound. This time I tried everything but all I get is the fan starts up the little on/off light blinks, it goes into window XP start up and then after about a minute of this it turns to black screen before my desk top shows and the on/off light stops blinking. It will not start up in safe mode; I cannot perform Alt.- Ctrl- Delete.

Thanks in advance

Well, I've built my computer and it sounds great when it starts up, but there is no display, not even BIOS on the monitor. lemme lay it out for you:

the fan and the heat sink look and sound like they're working.
I've tried my video card (a GeForce 7600 GS), and a friend's (Geforce 6800). I plugged in the power extension on the 6800. neither of the video cards worked, and I can't try using them in tandem either.
I believe the most important thing may be the monitor. the light under the screen turns green when I first turn it on, then turns orange. I don't know about everyone else, but for my monitor this means one or more of three things:

the attached computer is turned off
there is no computer connected to the monitor
the computer is on sleep
I read my video card manual, and it said that I MIGHT need to update the drivers that are specifically for the monitor. How do I do this without being able to turn on the computer, or even being able to memorize the keystrokes and do it blindly: the reason being that it doesn't sense my keyboard.
If anyone could make use of more information than this, let me know and I'll list the other components I have in there.

Answer:building computer/ black screen

I don't think your vid card drivers are at fault, they haven't been invoked at the intial stage.

Your card may be faulty did you try it in another pc?

Your assembly may be faulty recheck very carefully, especially memory and secondary power connectors.

Normally when a monitor is first switched on the power light comes on and then changes colour when it receives the sync signal from the pc.

What do the lights on the keyboard do?

Hello. I've come to hopefully find a solution to a boot up problem I'm having with my computer. There are several factors that I'm honestly not sure will play a role or not, mainly because I'm not very understanding when it comes to computers.

The problem is that when I push the power button of my computer, it sends no signal to my screen. I can't tell if it loads anything or not either. I can think of a few things that might have some effect on this, but I'm not sure.

About three months back after cleaning my neglected tower of dust and such, it started to shut off rapidly after boot up. To inspect the problem, I had a friend look at the computer. He removed the cooling unit on the Processor revealing that my 8year old computer had next to no thermal compound. So after putting of ordering some for about three months, we had applied some about 2 days ago. The computer then booted up fine, but seemed to have an excess amount of lag. So I wiped the computer and reinstalled XP tonight. When it was booted up, it worked fine, so I went into IE to download firefox as it's my preference, then started reinstalling my drivers. First I installed my Videocard, then kept my computer booted up for my sound drivers which I got from the Compaq homesite. After doing this, I rebooted my computer. Not I wanted to get simple things such as AIM and and Java. So when i go to boot up Firefox from it's default homepage, my computer shuts down. when I go to reboot it, it doesn't start and I'm ... Answer:New Computer, black screen + GPU Fan at max speed

First of all search for beep codes for your MB, # of beeps will tell you what fails during bootup. I build quiet few desktops myself and usually in case like yours is good to recheck all the connections, especially seating of the video card, more than once the card seemed to be in but not really. Also all the power supply cables, RAM and pretty much redo whole assembly from scratch. Also it's often helpful to boot computer with minimum components: for example disconnect hard drive and it should still get you into BIOS and to "can't find boot drive" message, but the beep and no video at all would indicate it stops at the very beginning of sequence and that's where beep codes are helpful. Could be one of the components is not compatible or outright broken also.

Every 15 minutes I have to disconnect the computer from the power supply..Not a good idea but the only one that can restart the computer.

I used check errors, disk defragmenter , disk clean up to see if that would improve the situation.. Nothing jhappens..

Any suggestion?

when i turn the power switch on the lights come on on the motherboard. the computer will start, harddisk runs and fans are spinning. i dont have a speaker for beep noises. screen is just blank, no signal. tried setting the graphics card in another computer where it runs fine. tried 2 different harddisks, tried powering up without harddisks, tried reseating components and removing ram sticks to check. nothing works. i can afford a new mobo or cpu, but how do i know which of them is faulty? i suspect the motherboard. also tried setting the graphics card in another slot, no luck. normally on my other computer when i turn it on, the graphic card fan will run hard for a few secs then settle once entering bios or post or what it is u call it, when setting it in the bad computer it just runs hard until i shut it off again. any help is greatly appreciated. thanks.

So recently my computer has been crashing... well I do not know if the computer is crashing or my graphics card is..

I will be playing CODMW3 or a few other games that I own, when both my screens go black, and the sound lags... Like if any sound that was currently playing when it crashed drags on forever.... I am not sure if the computer itself is crashing because all my fans are running and lights are on... ??

I am tried MANY things to narrow down the problem, such as...
Tried using a different video card... Same thing....
Tried adjusting the amount of ram, and doing memory diag...
Checking Temps of my CPU and GPU.. both in decent ranges...

This issue is never at the same time.. I could be playing for 30 minutes before it goes, or sometimes right when i jump into the first game of the day...

I even thought this could be a windows issue, as unlikely as that was.. And re installed windows..

My specs are...

AMD Phenom II X4 840, 3.20 GHz
16GB of memory
MSI Nvidia 550 ti

I have a Dell Dimension 8400 Desktop computer and whenever I start the computer up it goes to a blank black screen with a flashing bar in the top left hand corner. Usually it does this for a second and then continues to load but it jus stops there and the computer isn't working or anything. Yesterday it was fine and now its doing this. I don't know if its something really easy to resolve this or not but any help would be much appreciated

However, if I just want to restart the computer in XP Pro /w SP2, Windows will shut down and then where I should have the bios screen and all the start up processes going on before Windows loads I just have this black screen and no buttons get rid of it, I am just forced to hold down the power button until it shuts off. Does anyone have any ideas? Thank you.

My Toshiba Satellite L305D-S5934 isn't turning on correctly, when I turn it on, it starts up as usual but then it shows a black screen. HELP. I have really important files on my computer and don't want to lose them. Is there a way to remove my hard-drive and install all the memory on a different laptop?

Answer:My computer shows a black screen, how can I fix it?

"Is there a way to remove my hard-drive and install all the memory on a different laptop?"A hard drive does not have memory. It has storage space. Memory is totally different. You can buy a 2.5-inch external enclosure and put the drive into that. Then connect the enclosure to a USB port on another PC.

I hope to get help soon so i can get my rig running and install my OS onto it.

*NOTE: if this post is in the incorrect section of the forums, i ask that a moderator move it to the section that is right.

Answer:Computer getting black screen after installing new SSD.

Check and make sure you didn't accidentally unplug anything, also try to reset your BIOS/CMOS.

Ensure your monitor has power, try using different monitors, do the lights on your keyboard flash on then off? Do you get sound from your speakers after waiting awhile to determine if the OS has loaded?

I have started having problems booting up my computer, the screen stays off. I have to unplug my computer and press the off button but this does not always work sometimes it takes a few tries. Could there be a problem with my RAM?

Answer:Computer does not always boot, black screen.

Firstly: Don't unplug your PC, you could cause irreparable damage.
Use the Reset button.
This happens to my old plodder (8yo) every now and again, but not that often. By pure chance it happened this morning. My guess is that, for some reason, the Hard Drive did not start, but to be honest I have no idea.
What I have done: I have no real intention of buying a replacement but I have started saving.
I have set in hand a Backup System. I upgraded it from XP to W7 18 months ago and that has a Backup Facility built in. I bought a WD 'My Passport' and backup every Sunday Night. I also installed Nero 'Backitup' which I use to backup my .pst File and Accounts, every day.
With luck, if everything goes tits up, I shall be able to resume normal service, within about 10 days, by using a Mates PC to order a replacement, on-Line.

So I got a hp pavilion tx510us entertainment notebook (runs Vista) and it seems to turn on (like all the lights are on and it makes noises) but the screen is black/blank or whatever. And its not just a blank screen because then I would have been able to put my pass in and then hear the turn on music and stuff. The thing is this happened before when it was still under warranty so I sent it in for free and they sent it back and it turned on and it still had on all my stuff so it must have been an easy enough solution, but when I chatted with them again I guess they don't keep track of what they did to it and they want me to send it in again and that would cost a large sum of money because its no longer under warranty. I did a hard reset a few times and took out the memory module and put it back in agian but still nothing. So, anyone have any ideas?

My laptop screen turns black right after I turn it on. I don't even get to the Windows screen most of the time. I hooked it up to an external computer screen and get a picture if I do get past Windows screen, and I just had a new screen put on 6 months ago.  I have looked online and seen some info about possibly the blacklight or inverter is messed up. Any help would be appreciated.

Answer:Screen Goes Black After Turning On Computer

If I read this correctly it seems as if even on another monitor it has a bit of an issue.  Have you tried getting into safe mode as you boot up?  Try tapping F8 repeatedly as it boots, if it works in safe mode that would rule out a hardware issue.

HP p6130y, AMD Phenom X49750 quad processor, 8gb ram (original), ATI Radeon HD 6450 (upgrade), windows 7 x64 (upgrade)

Originally had freezing problem when I first upgraded to Windows 7. Was able to fix it via these threads (can't remember how). It started freezing up recently, particularly after loss of power or sleep/hibernation. Format hdd, reinstalled windows 7, started freezing up randomly. Tried to install Vista x64 from cd, started freezing during installation. So figure it's hardware. Removed video card, can't get anything from onboard video card to show up, vga or dvi. Powers on to a blackscreen. (both cables work fine with an alternate computer)

I could reinstall the video card and I may/may not get it the boot up screen, but what can I do about the freezing issue?

Any help is appreciated.
Thanks in advance.

Answer:Computer will not boot up, black screen.

find your motherboard manual online and figure out how to reset the bios, or just remove the motherboard battery AND unplug your power supply for 30 seconds. This will hopefully allow the onboard video to work. Then reflash your bios, since yours may be corrupted right now. If these do not cause the freezing to stop, you have a hardware problem. Either a bad hard drive, motherboard, or power supply are possible.

My laptop has a black screen at boot up. I amrunning Windows xp sp3. I have hooked it to an external monitor to attempt system restore, but can't get there. It won't boot up with any of the options - safe mode, last good, etc. Is there any way to bring this pc back to life? I don't have the startup or restore disk - bought it used and it didn't come with any. Also tried taking the battery out and just plugging it into ac power. Same problem. Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks

Answer:Computer won't boot - black screen

I'm confused. You are telling us all this extra information and we just need the basics right now.

Can you see anything on the external monitor when you hook it up?

If not, you could try removing ram (unlikely) but your options are VERY limited if you have a black screen because the video card or motherboard might have failed making it a paperweight.

Try booting from a Live Linux CD maybe.

When I am trying to start the computer, all fans starts but nothing happens at the screen. After a while there comes a message on the monitor that displays there is no signal (there probably never was any either). What is wrong and what should I do. I appreciate all help I can get.

My computer is an HP Pavillion dv9000 with around 3 GB RAM and 300 GB hard drive space. That may not help in my situation because when I start my computer, it all loads fine. You hear the tune of windows Vista and it brings me to the login screen to put in my password (It's VIsta Home Premium to be specific). I input my password and it logs in. It then brings me to a black page with only my cursor showing. I CAN run task manager and when I check how many processes I'm running, I'm only running 9 processes:csrss.exewinlogon.exenvvsvc.exedwm.exemsfeedssync.exePresentationSettings.exetaskeng.exeexplorer.exetaskmgr.exeThis black screen happened after I ran system restore due to my computer becoming so slow that it could be deemed unresponsive. Since that didn't work out, I started my computer and pressed F8 continuously and reran system restore to a point farther back in time. That didn't fix a thing and now I'm stuck only with these 9 processes, my task manager, my cursor, the login screen, and the vista symbol at the beginning. I'm on a secondary computer posting this because my first one is completely useless at the moment. What should I do to fix it? Please help. Thank you in advance for reading my post thus far.

Answer:Computer Black Screen With Cursor

I had essentially the same issue not long ago and it resulted from a conflict with the attempted use of some software. The company that created the software eventually determined it WAS a problem of conflict with their software. They provided me with an ISO image that enabled me to "restore the MBR" (master boot record). I do not know if this could be where your issue and solution lie but i mention it in case another higher pay grade CH member might see this as a solution to your problem and give you more complete guidance to enable you to do it. I have a 1 1/2 year old HP laptop running Vista with current Norton Virus protection. Today I ran live update and a scan everything was fine, after having downloaded a couple of media files from net. Other than a very slight discoloration on the left 1/3 of the screen for a month or so it has run well and given me no problems. Am using backup Toshiba to send this message. First symptom was screen went black and a older media file started running. Have a few saved to desk top, so simply thought I started it accidentally. Closed it, but a few minutes later another one started and I closed it, was concerned at this point Norton missed a virus. Went about checking email and screen went black, moved mouse pushed buttons and came back. Moved up all security from medium to high thinking the problem was there. Rebooted thinking this might download any new Norton. Got the message saying did not start properly and saw safe mode and other choices. Started it normally, within a minute or so kept going back to black screen, like a hibernation. Turned it off and tried starting in safe mode. Would not allow. The first flash on screen I see, when starting is normal page, for 1/2 a second. Screen then turns black and remains so, will not respond to any commands. Even with head set plugged in, hear beeping sound out of speakers when trying safe mode buttons. Also blue wireless lite on front has gone to orange. Indicating no wireless. Blue lite returned after computer was on for awhile. Right n... Read more

This is the issue I'm having. I start up my computer and after about 8-12min it either blue screens/black screens. Its not a virus, I've re-formatted a few times after a crash and still the same issue. I've asked computer shops and "gurus" about the issue and no one can give me a answer. On another note; A few months ago (About 6) the person who I bought my computer from, installed the graphics card wrong and the card would slip out of place. I moved my card to the secondary slot and the origional slot had been fried. After I resolved this issue the computer would run fine. But recently It started doing same ol same ol...my Nvidia control panel has a "Data Execution" Error every time I try to open it.

Here is the crash issue

Hi Lenovo forum, I have a problem with my X120e laptop screen. My laptop is old, 5 years old now. So, let's think about other causes than that. Whenever I start the computer, the monitor does not show anything. It stays black as if it was not turned on. I may have missed some very subtle light changes on the screen when the computer is running, though. However, the computer itself is running. For instance, I am able to use my TV HDMI plug to see the graphic display of the computer, and I could litterally ignore this issue by using the TV as my new monitor, but that's not what I want. This is not the first time this is happening. Last time, I just opened/closed the computer to get the screen working in about three tries. Ever since then, I never shut down my laptop until yesterday night I accidentally did so.  Any fixes? I tried the battery removal method, but it didn't work.

I got 2 PCs both are exactly the same in spect and make, just over a year old. one of them was making a westling noise i opened it and took the fan of the processor off to check the model and get a new fan because it was the cause of the noise. i took the processor out with the fan and then placed the processor and the fan back on the mother board (ofcourse made sure that the pins of the processor properly sets in and doesnt bend). when i started the computer i get a black screen i dont get nothing on the screen no message no grey window nothing just as if the monitor is off. but yet the hard drive spins and everything, i cant get to the bios it does not show anything, i thought it is the graphic card. i opened the other pc which as i said is identical and placed the graphic card of that pc and still the same problem i then tested the graphic card of the first machine in the second one it is perfictly working so i know it is not the graphic card. i then though it may be the processor and i carefully took out the processor of the second pc and placed it in the first one still the same problem. i then put back the processor in the second machine and realised that it is not working too. now both of my machines are not working they both show a black screen as if it is off and show nothing, but the hard drive is spinning. can someone help me plz.

will have to tell a mate to organize/buy a keyboard for me.. as i work till 10 o clock today :F

if it doesnt help.. try disconnecting all the possible hardware devices which are not essentially needed for getting into the bios screen.

already tried to reset your bios by taking out the mobo-battery for about 30 seconds? (with no power plugged into the computer, naturally.)

Ok. So I was playing The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion today and I run quite a few mods so it freezes up from time to time and it froze like which the solution is to just restart my computer. Well I just killed the power and went to eat dinner. When I got back I turned on the computer and it went through all the normal booting procedures but just when it should show the normal desktop it shows a totally black screen with no mouse yet I can boot into safe mode with no problem. No idea what's wrong.

Answer:Computer boots to black screen.

Since you have no problem logging in Safe mode, try the System Restore from there to an earlier point. Imo the most probable thing to have happened is that Windows files were damaged when you instantly killed the power (you should try to avoid that, it's kind of risky).

I'm hoping I'm posting in the right place. I am new to this forum.A few days ago I turned on my HP Pavillion dv6449us laptop, and all the lights on the keyboard, and the power light came on, but I had a black screen (the monitor never came on).I played around with a little bit and found that if I hit F8 when I pressed the power button it would let me start up in safe mode (sometimes). I talked to HP (which weren't much help because my warranty ran out 2 months ago on a 14 month old computer!!!!) He did help me get into my Bios (which I could have done myself)I eventually got the computer to boot up without hitting the F8 button but my screen was messed up. You could see Windows Vista starting up but there were about a million lines crossing the screen (which led me to believe there was something wrong with my video card). I started back up in F8 mode and uninstalled my NVidia graphics card and restarted so it installed the standard VGA driver. (I found this as a solution online).I started up the computer and again got the black screen but the LED's lit up. I noticed that my hard drive only blinked twice before nothing else happened. After a few seconds the computer rebooted itself. This was continual. I just let it continue to reboot (wanting to see if anything would happen) and it eventually started up on it's own.If I restart the computer (after I got in ok once) I was back to the black screen.I have reseated the memory, hard drive and video card an... Well for the past month my computer has been freezing or my mouse froze requiring a reboot, but when I started it up again the screen would go black and not do anything then I would turn it off and turn it back on and it would start up normally.

A couple days ago I had to reformat my computer cause I kept getting a computer crash leading to a blue screen.

Just today my computer froze when I started up a game, then I turned off my computer and again the booting up with black screen happens again but this time, it will not start up at all even after several times turning off and trying to turn back on.

Idk if this helps but my keyboard lights quickly flash then they go off and my keyboard dont work.

Anymore info you might need just ask. I would like to know whats wrong.

Hello guys,

I have a problem. It's been a few days since I've been able to load up my computer. It all started with a noisy processor fan. After continously opening the case to blow out dust from the fan blades (which seem to work for about 10-15 minutes), the noisy fan continued. I guess at this point is when I had a horrible situation turn into tragedy. I commenced to disassemble the CPU/Heatsink/fan component from the MB to see if I could get a "closer" look at the problem. It didn't seem like there was a visual problem to the unit so I "attempted" to put it back onto the MB. Note** I've never officially hooked a CPU w/Heatsink and fan assembly attached to the MB before **. I had always hooked up a "fresh" CPU onto the MB before applying the Heatsink/Fan assembly after. To me, I can fit the pins into the grooves better without the Heatsink/Fan attached. This is where my frustrations mounted. I ended up bending a few pins from trying to attach the CPU back onto the motherboard. I tried fixing the pins after browsing the internet for ways to fix them (I used the folded paper technique) which was working for awhile, but for whatever reason, one of the pins snapped from its place and that was it for me. I put the CPU aside and ordered a new one. The new one was delivered to me today. So I put the new CPU on the MB (and it was hooked up right btw) and booted up the system and BAM!! All the fans kicked on, including the CPU fan ... Read more
