W10 too slow to work with after a minute of 5

Question: W10 too slow to work with after a minute of 5

Hi everybody,

After searching on the internet and doing some disk assignment tweaks, i still can't find a solution for my problem.

My w10 was running fine every day when all of a sudden my pc got really slow. When clicking on the start menu it sometimes doesnt load and a reboot/shut down takes 5 minutes before something happens. Also loading the file explorer takes forever and when finished loading it won't show examples of files like jpg's and png's.

I guess it is a problem with w10 because the ssd where my w10 is installed is only 2 months old. Do you guys have any solution? I need my pc for work, so i'm really trying to find a solution.

Preferred Solution: W10 too slow to work with after a minute of 5

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Answer: W10 too slow to work with after a minute of 5

run this few things from Command prompt (As Administrator) first:
sfc /scannow
and
dism /online /cleanup-image /restorehealth
To make sure there's no system corruption.
At disk properties, under tools , you'll find Error checking > Check, that should check file integrity.
Did you run any AV checks maybe and Malwarebytes too ?

So I run a p4 3.0, 896 ram and 512 kbps dsl windows xp

I live in greece so I use OTE as my ISP with a speedtouch modem.

My problem is, my internet will work for a few pages when I first open the browser and then when I try to open a new page (that im sure exists) it just pretends like its trying to open it but just sitting there using none of the network speed. (im sure this is the case as I've turned off everthing else including my anti-virus and whanot to test this)

the weird thing is that when i copy link location, close all instances of the browser, reopen the browser and paste the link that wasnt working just a moment ago. it works? It's some weird connection between my browser or ISP and the internet.

please please please someone know what to do!

Answer:browser has to be reopened to work after a minute or so

Well i think that you coulds try installing the drivers for the moderm or repair them. You could also try and download internet explorer and when the installtion wizards starts you should try repair, this should repair any erros or missing files, or if you still have the windows xp disc, you should try and install it again, this should also fix any errors and missing files BUT IF YOU DO THAT REMEMEBER TO BACK-UP TOUR FILES BECAUSE THEY WILL BE LOST AND YOU WILL ALSO HAVE TO INSTALL ALL YOUR PROGRAMS BACK ON

hope this helps, please reply gd luck

Use PCpartpicker as a very useful guide. Your motherboard's specifications will show what CPU and Ram it will support though.

Answer:Slow pc after 1 minute

Hello there,

Have you tried cleaning up your hard drive by removing unused programs and transferring old data, pictures, music files to an external hard drive? When you have backed up your data then run Disk Cleanup and let it scan your system for files to remove.

This should hopefully improve the boot up speed on your PC.

Hope this helps!

Hi.

My computer was running great... until about 2 weeks ago. For no reason at all it wouldn't load up. It kept showing a message 'Windows failed to start properly'. After several attempts, it loaded up sucessfully. Since then, I haven't seen this message again. However, from then on it took between 10-15 minutes to start up and then the first program that I chose to run would take 3-5 minutes to load. This is abnormal and ridiculous! Here is my HJT log... THANKS!!

When I turn on the computer about twenty minutes is quiet. Than fan starts like a hurricane, slows down and stops. It lasts few seconds. The fan works in this way regularly with one minute intervals.
Is there any possibility to switch the fan on continuous work in slow motion?

Answer:Satellite L20-182: fan doesn't work properly - one minute intervals

Hi,

If you go to toshiba power saver you should be able to turn your up or down. Once you open this program from control panel, you have the option to change how much your processor runs as well as how much your cooling modules work. Turning either one down will make the fan not come on as much. Then you might want to try and use a vacuum cleaner to suck the air intake grills to clean any dust that could be clogging it up. Dust can make the fan run more because the lack of cool, fresh air entering the system to cool the cpu. Hope this helps.

Hello:
I am running a Compaq Presario V2000--it's about 2 years old and running slower than ever. Answer:Very Slow Performance / 10-minute Startup

Hello Again:

I wanted to provide you with a little more information... the current utilities on my system include: Avast Antivirus, ZoneAlarm Pro, SpyWare Terminator, Spybot Search & Destroy, Windows Defender, and RegistrySmart. These programs all run automatically on a daily basis.

However, I did run a few manual scans and all reported clean except:
Windows Defender removed:
Trojan:Win32/Conhook.D
Trojan:Win32/Virtumonde.O

RegistrySmart found numerous issues--all were corrected.

Also, under the Add/Remove Programs, I found the following programs and removed them:
Viewpoint Manager
Viewpoint Media Player

Thanks again for your forthcoming assistance and sorry for the delayed action and potential inconvenience, but here is my updated HijackThis logfile:

I click on the button to begin the scan and a new window appears but it remains blank and the loading status is "done". I added the site to my trusted zone, but this hasn't changed anything--I've tried this in IE and Opera with no joy.

I have two computers on a network and when we try to pen files, whether locally or over the network, it takes about a minute for he file to actually open, no matter what type of file it is. No error message, nothing. UNLESS we open the program (i.e. Word) first, and THEN open the file through the program, it opens fine. We have no virus scanners istalled to see if that would help, but it didn't and also performed a reg clean - well cleaned everything really and it's made no difference. Running XP. I'd GREATLY APPRECIATE any help.

Thank you!!

Answer:Files opening very slow - about a minute or so

Howdy,

So my laptop has been acting slow lately..

I'll be either browsing the net, or playing WoW, or even an old gba emulator and then BOOM, my PC use jumps to 100%..

It's weird because for example, on WoW, it will be running PERFECT and then MAJOR slowdown. And then even when I shut WoW off, my pc is still running at 100% and it takes a bit for it to go down.

it does that sometimes with just browsing too. It just all of a sudden jumps to 100.

I ran spyware and it didnt catch a lot really, so I ran hijack and maybe you guys can help me find something.

Thanks!

Hello.

I've been at this for hours upon hours. I cannot figure out why my newly built computer takes 3 mins to get to login screen....not even desktop. I just built this PC a few days ago. My build is:
16GB of PC1600 DDR3
i5 2500k 3.3Ghz
Gigabyte GA-Z68XP-UD3 SATA 6.0GB/s USB3.0 mobo
Corsair Force Series 3 90GB SSD SATA III,
Intel HD graphics (for now now ext. graphics card),
850TX Corsair PSU
ASUS dvd-rom SATA
win 7 64bit

SSD is plugged into the intel chipset controlled SATA 3 6.0GB/s slot (not the marvel controlled port cuz I read everywhere it's not as fast, although it was in there at first. I've moved it.)
ASUS into a normal SATA 2 port
Done all the good recommended OS tweaks like no disk defragmenting
downloaded all the drivers I've thought to download, and installed all the mobo drivers from the disc.
Updated all 90+ windows updates
updated the AHCI controller by downloading the newest intel controller (the standard controller didn't go faster)
TRIM is active
BIOS are in AHCI as recommended
used corsair to update my firmware v1.3.3 to you guessed it...v1.3.3. Didn't work before, didn't work after.

There is no reason this build should take 3mins to startup. I tried almost everything I've read so far. I downloaded the crystaldisk program and it said my best read speed (first test) was 189MB/s. That's the fastest of them all. I think the random read was 9MB/s.

Nothing I've read has worked. Anyone have any ideas?

I'm getting even more frustrated watching peopl... Read more

Hello,

I have an ACER 2.5Ghz, 3GB RAM, Vista w/SP 2.

Once powered on, it literally takes 10-12 minutes for the desktop to appear. After that, every application I run is extremely slow. Forget about trying to run two things at once. I have Avast installed/running.

Thanks in advance!

Ok, let's run a quick scan first off.run MBAM (MalwareBytes):NOTE: Before saving MBAM please rename it to zztoy.exe....now save it to your desktop. Please download Malwarebytes Anti-Malware and save it to your desktop.alternate download link MBAM may "make changes to your registry" as part of its disinfection routine. Hello all. I have an X220 with 6201, latest drivers downloaded from the Lenovo site. Whenever I sleep or hibernate, when I resume computer (on Win7) I get either a litte red x or a little glowing orb on my wireless connection, which indicates "Wireless not connected - Connections are available".  But I can't connect for up to a minute!! If I leave it alone it will connect on its own. What is going on, this is really becoming a problem!

Answer:X220 wireless doesn't work for up to a minute when resuming from sleep or hibernate

If you can't afford to wait a minute of so to reconnect, then use Fn+F5 to turn off all wireless devices before you hibernate and use it again to to switch them back on when you power up again.

Cheers,

Thanks in advance for your help. It appears I have randomly picked up a virus of some sort wherein whenever I am connected to the internet, my computer gives the "Windows Has Recovered From a Critical Error and Will Restart in One Minute. Please Save your Work Now." message, and my computer restarts as the message states. I have run adaware and malwarebytes' antimalware with mixed results, and downloaded a windows malware removal tool, but none have completely eliminated the problem. I can turn the internet off via a switch on my netbook (it is a HP Mini 110-1100 with Windows 7 Starter), and when I have that turned off before I log in, the computer works as normal, but of course the internet is a much-needed tool. Hi.
Well recently my computer was acting up, it slowing quite a bit, and the boot times were getting unbarable. So I backed the stuff I needed, formated and reinstalled windows. And ever since it has been slower than I have ever had it in the past, even before I installed anything I had enough time to make myself some cerial and finish it before it had finished booting. So I tried formatting again and re-installing windows but it still continued. Now That Ive installed all the drivers, and programs I needed (like opera and flash and a firewall and stuff like that), its has become unbarable to use this computer.

The boot times isn't the worst bit though, every 30 seconds or so the whole thing freezes for another about 20 seconds. Also it freezes whenever I open a program, or sometimes evern rightclick! It happens whenever I open a new page in opera, its just getting rediculous. Ive done 2 virus and spyware scans, disabled every item that loads when windows starts exept the firewall. But its still too slow to use.

Its an OK pc, with 1gb of ram and 2.5GHz Intel Pentium 4 processor, so I really don't understand whats doing this. BTW the temparature tends to stay within a 37-40.

Any ideas?

Thanks in advance.

I restarted and timed how long the boot time was....

17 Minutes and 15 seconds

Answer:17 minute boot times and extremely slow system.

So...this is a clean install?

Have you tried opening the case and dusting it out a little, or trying different RAM?

[Sirefef virus]Hi all.It looks like I've picked up a virus while browsing the internet (Drive-by infection). The computer was operating OK except last night I heard it playing a video talking about meryl streep (through the speakers) but there was no window open (a bit sus). Then when I checked this morning, I saw that System Centre essentials, Windows update, Firewall and whatever Windows Defender is now called have all been disabled (computer still functioning OK though...).I then tried to reinstall System Centre Essentials and now get a message every time I boot the computer saying "Windows has encountered a critical problem and will restart automatically in one minute. Please save your work Now". This happens in Normal and Safe Mode.I'm not running a CD Drive emulator, and I'd love some suggestions on how to tackle this given my 1 minute window of opportunity when the computer boots. Thanks![Edit] Just tried rebooting my PC this morning, it looks like I have picked up the sirefef virus (or a variant) - the latest definitions from MSE picked it up. It's still doing the reboot every minute trick though, and the files keep reappearing after i "Clean" them.[Edit #2] I have used Kaspersky Rescue Disk 10 (http://support.kaspersky.com/viruses/rescuedisk/) to locate the original version of Services.exe in the winsxs folder and copy it back to the c:\windows\system32\ folder (after renaming the one sirefef put there) could have... Hey there,

I recently came from another forum and posted on their site about this problem. It was a Malware forum. We went through all the basics, and even some of the non-basics, basically, we found nothing and I guess proved it wasn't Malware. Basically, he told me a lot of stuff I should do, I did most of them that I could, and then he closed the thread.

To be more specific, the computer takes forever to turn on and load. I get to the XP loading bar and have to wait 10 minutes ish sometimes longer for it to load up, the for the rest of the computer to load. Once it's loaded, the internet works fine and fast as normal. It's just that all of my music skips and it's not just an every five second skip. Sometimes it's not bearable to listen to and I'm listening to it through external speakers, however the internal speakers do the same thing. I recently installed a new hard drive but I don't know if that would have anything to do with it. I've had a lot of issues with this computer and to be honest I'm about done with it.

Please try to help anyway possible,

Thanks,
Ty

I recently got the hard drive in my Acer V3 laptop replaced since the first one had failed, and this new hard drive seems significantly slower than the old hard drive. The first hard drive was a Hitachi and was constantly getting anywhere from 20 to 60 seconds to boot to desktop, whereas this hard drive, a WDC WD7500BPVT, is taking anywhere from 60 to 90 seconds to boot to desktop and then another 30 seconds to finish booting everything. Now this hard drive was a clean reinstall of Windows 7, so I don't understand why it's taking so long to boot. I only have about 80 GB on this 750 GB hard drive, and I don't have many programs running at startup either. Why is the old Hitachi beating this new replacement hard drive? They're both 5400 RPM 750 GB hard drives, with a SATA speed of 3 GB.

Answer:Western Digital Hard Drive is Slow- 2 minute boot times

Not good. Very slow drive can mean a failing drive. And yes, I know it's "new" -- but I had three WD drives fail me last year and one was only a few months old. If you can, go to the WD website, download their drive health checking utility (sorry, forgot the name) and run it on the drive. It's not destructive but it will check the health of the drive. IF it's only a few weeks old, and it's already failing, you should be able to get a replacement through the warranty for free.

Hi aja656

Thank you for your patience. I will be helping you deal with the issues raised in your log from this point onwards

Before we start jumping into things, here is a quick basic note which I mention to everyone. The fix which I have provided for you is for this computer only, it should not be used on any other computer. Each fix is tailor made for the specific task in hand. If for some reason you have system restore disabled, then please re-enable it before proceeding, an infected restore is better than none. Please read through the fix first and set enough time aside to complete the task in one session. If there is anything you feel needs clarification then please ask - do not guess! Thanks.

If this is a business machine then please make sure that you have both the authority and full administration rights to the computer system.

Please follow these directions in the order they are set out for you.

On with the fix.....

I notice that the version of HJT that you are running is out of date, please delete the version of HJT that you have and download the latest version (v2.0.2) - Here to your desktop. Install HJT but do not run it just yet.

Next.....

Please download Deckard's System Scanner (DSS) to your Desktop. Note: You must be logged onto an account with administrator privileges.Close all applications and windows.
Double-click on dss.exe to run it, and follow the prompts.
When the scan is complete, two text files will open - main.txt ... Read more

The internet comes and goes. I'll have pages load instantly for a minute or so and then the next click the pages times out. A minute of page refreshing and more time outs and then I'm back to blazing speeds again. This repeats again and again. Restarting the computer, cable modem and router seems to make no difference. I've tried IE, Firefox, Chrome and Safari, and again, no difference. I have 4 computers on my home network. This happens on all of them but for the sake of troubleshooting this I have physically disconnected 3 of them from the network. I've reset and reconfigured the router. I've removed the router and connected straight to the modem. No problems. Blazing connection. Added the router back in the loop, reboot and problem occurs immediately. So router problem, right? Yes, except I had the same problem with another router and replaced it with this one. I believe I have some sort of virus as all of a sudden my boot up to even get to a state that I could try to get to a website is very very slow....took me about 20 minutes to even get to this point to post....

along the way, while trying to open a browser I recieved a NORTON 360 "virus blocked alert" that stated the risk name of "HTTPS Tidserv Request 2" hat was successfully blocked.....

Yesterday while trying to shut down I recieved an "ICIBAI.exe" Encountered a problem and needs to close

I also noticed prior to that when I pressed control, Alt, delete listed in my programs running was something called "LSASS.exe"...dont know what that is...there were other programs listed in there as well that I am not aware of and really didnt look like they belonged.....

and one final item....when booting after this issue occured....(I have shut down and rebooted in an attempt to see if the problem went away....) I have gotten a "Windows Installer" message that then opens up a box for my printer that states "HP Photoshop Essential"...this takes about 25 minutes to finally get up and then gets to another box that states "The feature you are trying to use is on a CD-Rom or other disk that is not available, insert the HPPHOTOSMARTESSENTIAL" disk and press ok"......since that is now open I am going to insert that disk and press ok...

Question: work slow in win10

My laptop is not work properly and speed is very slow in win10 pro. Some time before i upgraded in win10 from win7

Answer:work slow in win10

Dil999 Without details of your product number, I can not check for Win10 drivers -- but the most likely issue is that there are no HP Win10 drivers for your Win7 PC, which relegates it to using generic Microsoft drivers, which do not provide leading edge functionality. If you will follow these directions for finding your detailed product number, I can check for drivers: Finding Your HP Product Model Number | HP® Customer Support But, without these drivers, your performance is always going to suffer and to get decent performance back, you would have to restore your PC to its original condition running Win7.We can proceed once you provide the information. Thanks

I have done all I know to try and fix it but I still cant.
I tried a “Driver Agent” Scan its Doesn’t Say anything particular about my USB Drivers.I have no idea what to do.

This problem ive noticed mostly on Storage Devices. as soon as I plug my External Hard disk or my Pen Drive into a USB I get " This Device can perform Faster.....this device can perform faster if connected to a high speeed usb port". And the Transfer of Data is Painfully slow. I have no idea what to do ....plz HELP!.

I think this issue could only be a Storage device issue and I have loads of data and want to somehow figure out a way to Transfer stuff to my External Drives faster.

Hello Dashakan,

As you probably already know, your logs are clean. Some suggestions below none of which are malware related:

From Add/Remove Programs (via Control Panel), please uninstall the below:

J2SE Runtime Environment 5.0 Update 6
Java(TM) 6 Update 31
McAfee Security Scan Plus => McAfee Removal Tool
McAfee Virus and Spyware Protection Service => McAfee Removal Tool

__

Now Reboot

__

Please download Disable/Remove Windows Messenger to your desktop.

Double-click MessengerDisable.exe to run it.
Place checkmarks in "Uninstall Windows Messenger" and "Hide Messenger from Outlook Express"
Click Apply
Click Exit

__

Run C:\MGtools\analyse.exe by double-clicking it (Vista/7 right-click and select Run as Administrator)
Shut down your protection software now (antivirus, antispyware...etc) to avoid possible conflicts.
Choose "Do a system scan only" and select the following lines but do not click fix until you exit all explorer windows and all browser sessions including the one you are reading in right now:

I have a T1 line at the small school I work at (maximum of 30 computers). I ran a speed test and received a .88Mbps. I ran the same test at home and received a 4.7Mbps on a cable connection. When I ran the test at work, there were only 4 other people on a computer.

The school pays $24,000 for the T1 line. Part of that could be payment for actually running the line, I think the connection hub was 5 miles away. We are in a remote part of PA so future options could be limited.

From what I know the overall Mbps is 1.5. So if we have 10 computers on the network, does it work like this... 1.5Mbps/10 = .15 Mbps each? Is T1 that slow? I thought T1 was a good connection? Has it just become old and outdated? Why is it that 10 years ago schools with hundreds of computers ran seamlessly on T1 and we can't run a maximum of 30 computers on it now?

Answer:T1 line very slow at work

You should be asking your ISP these questions.

I'm not absolutely positive, but I will state my two cents. I think all the machines on the network uses what is known as timeshare. If only one machine needs access then all the bandwidth is alloted to this one machine. But if two machines need access, time is shared between the two machines. Timeshare is split between machines making data request. Once a machine is no longer sending data request, there is no need in timeshare being alloted for the machine. In other words there is no specific set speed for each machine on the network. Network traffic is controlled by how many machines are making network request at any given time.

This phenomenon you mention is the Internet evolving and requiring more bandwidth as it progresses. The Internet 10 years ago wasn't bloated with as many high bandwidth websites. Dial-up was probably still common and fully functional back then. I'd hate to even make a connection with Dial-up now, it would probably take 4 minutes, for a single web-page to render.

I have a 32g hp pavillion xt963 with original xp installed on it. Naturally, with hp there is no cd to pop in for any thing. It does have sp 1 & 2 loaded on it. Now, this puter is so slow that i came to work to write this on another comp that has xp and works fine. I have noticed that i can not get device manager, did try system restore, really does not do anything. Tried system recovery and that will not allow for much due to the fact that is sez i do not have a users partition but, that it will create one, then it can't. Ok? then back to desktop. If i click on any thing it can take appx 1-2 mins. for that to come up. Suggestions have been that i have a virus, i have checked that and mc affee finds none. I do have a problem with a file mfc42u.dll that sez i do not have. I have downloaded this and put it in i386 file (changed nothing) still get error messages on a lot of files i am tring to open. what can i do to fix this thing?

I have been using photoshop cs3 for about 2 years on my current computer. About a month ago, it started running more slowly. When I crop, save a jpg or png file, or run certain actions, it used to take just a few seconds for the process to happen. Now a green progress bar appears and it quickly gets to the halfway point but takes a few minutes to complete the process. I can't figure out why.

Last night I downloaded anti-spyware and anti-malware programs and ran them. I had used up most of my hard drive storing photos, but a month ago I got an external drive and removed most of them so I now have 56.8 GB free on my C drive. I scanned my disk and defragmented last night as well. My computer does seem faster overall since doing all of that, but it didn't change the problem in CS3.

I found an old thread on here that said to change preferences in photoshop to increase the RAM that photoshop can use. I set mine at the maximum number of the desired range.

Any ideas? Thank you in advance for whatever you may be able to offer.

Running XP; 1gig RAM

MS IE7 automatically starts on some screwball website: http://runonce.msn.com/runonce2.aspx -- which can't be changed as the start page, and shows nothing but blue

Real Player plays sound only

Window's Media Player doesn't work at all

Ad-Aware doesn't work at all (it tries to update itself, then shuts down "gracefully")

Spybot works, and I run it frequently
I also have Computer Associates virus software and spyware software, both of which I run frequently.

Hi all.
I've looked at other ftp posts on here and this problem doesn't seem to have been found by anyone else.

I'm on a new system with windows 7 home and my ftp uploads are stupidly slow when they work and half the time they don't work.

I've tried using filezilla, core ftp, the command line and an online uploader all with the same results.

Up until last weekend all was fine and all of a sudden it is not.

Does anyone know what I can check to see where the problem is?

If I use my laptop - which has vista on it - the uploads work perfectly within seconds. Using my desktop with w7 I am having the problems. If an upload does work it takes around 20 secs to upload a 1k file. I am using the same router for both pc's and exactly the same software version for my firewall, anti virus, spyware etc...The only difference as far as I can see is my OS.

Any help would be greatly appreciated

Answer:very slow ftp uploads when they work

i just noticed that ftp downloads are not working at all on my w7 machine. as with the uploads they work with no problem on my vista pc.

forgot to say it's:
w7 home 64 bit
i5 2.66 hz
4gb
ati 5700
netgear wg111v2
bitdefender total security 2010
spybot s&d

hope this is enough info. the config was fine last week. no hardware changes since then so guess it's something about w7

OK, here's one for those who really really know their stuff.

Past couple days, my XP system got super slow on my home cable. In fact, IE won't even find the internet. Only Seamonkey can muscle through the problem and can even connect. Most of the time is spent "waiting for site". It's like it is having trouble with DNS server or something?

This system is lightning fast on my LAN at work (both hardlines, no wireless problems).

Now, I have confirmed it is a Windows issue, because the problem disappears when I switch over to my Linux system (dual-boot set-up).

I have antivirus updated, Spybot has run and cleaned up. I have deselected all internet services except TCP/IP. I have not tried any commercial "fix my system" utility.

Any suggestions?

Hi. I didn't know which category to post in, but I thought this would be the best as I thinkit's Windows in general. In like the past two weeks or so, my pc has gone really slow. Windows boots fast enough, but after that, it is really slow.

Microsoft office won't let me insert any clipart, it says Clip organizer cannot complete the operation. Class not registered, error code 0x80040154.

My eBay TurboLister won't even open, I've requested help from eBay numerous times, and they can't do anything. The downloads they tell me to get, when I click on them it says that my operating system already has them installed.

Now my HP Director won't open, it says a runtime error has occurred, do you wish to debug?

I've used an up-to-date Avast anti-virus to scan my pc, aswell as Spybot and AdAware. I've also got all the latest windows and office updates.

I have a HP Compaq NC6000 laptop I use at work. I recently lost the hard drive and our IT department replaced it. Anyways, after they did this I am getting terribly slow download speeds. 860-1721 kbps down and 4000 up. I tried two other PCs here at work and the download speeds on them were over 6000--I connected my laptop to those connections to see if that might be the problem but I still get the slow speeds. Where should I start in fixing this?

Answer:Slow download speeds at work

I got this computer less than a year ago. I only check my e-mail, read the latest news websites, and create PowerPoint presentations. When I check my e-mail I only open mail from people that I know. Everything else I delete. I have been following the rules of being safe on a computer since I've gotten this one.

However, it has finally slowed down, for whatever reason. I ran a multitude of virus scanners, spyware/trojan scanners, rootkit scanners, and they all came up with nothing. I looked at the hardware and was amazed to see only 512 mb of RAM, so I went and replaced it with 2x 2gb sticks. It now runs much faster, but is still very slow for having 4gb of ram and a 3.06GHz Pentium 4. Before it would take literally 1-2 minutes or more to open the internet, changing between programs would take 10 seconds, etc.. It now takes about 15 seconds to open the internet, program tabbing is 1-2 seconds. Faster, but still snail-pace for the hardware.

I don't know what else to do. Here's the first part of my dxdiag, if it helps. Let me know if I should provide any more information!

After struggle for a few weeks, I gave up and have to go back to work on my $600 HP notebook now. If you consider to buy a P51 and you want to work on multiple monitor and hence need to RDP to your notebook. Think again.  Here is my story.   I received my new notebook, the $3000 powerhouse. I set it up and retired and replaced my $600 HP notebook.  To my surprise, I found the RDP (remote desktop)  connection is too slow to use effectively. As monitor tends to have small monitor, I use two or three monitors. I run RDP client (which is part of MS windows 7) on my desktop machine to access my old HP notebook. It works perfectly.  Now, I do the same thing with thinkpad P51.  Basically, my desktop and my notebook are next to each other on the same LAN.  Actually, they are connected to each other by ethernet cable (not WIFI) through a smart network switch.  I do not change anything, just unplug my old HP notebook and plug in my new thinkpad P51.  Now, after I type two letters, the first started to show up.  If I just use my machine to browse internet, I do not care too much.  However, I pay $3000 for a powerful machine, and I expect much more than browsing internet. My PC suddenly became very very slow at everything, when attempting to open things like Backgammon game or MS Word it gave a message that the program needed to close and the usual stuff about reporting to MS. I run Win XP Home Edition, am not connected to the internet on that PC, RAM is 512MB and the PC is usually very fast. No new hardware or software has been installed. I ran a hardware diagnostics from SystemsSuite5 and the tests were fine until half way, then the PC performed a re-start. Virus-scan reported to viruses found. System Restore performed several times, but it made no difference. When attempting to start the PC in Safe Mode or with Last Known Good Configurations it failed. Any ideas????

First, thank you for this great forum! You guys really know your stuff!!

I have followed all your instructions on READ ME FIRST thread.

For weeks now, my computer has been having major trouble with links. Most links in emails do not work and if they do they take forever to come up. Also, many links on websites do not work. Not only do they not work but my computer gets completely hung up for several seconds or several minutes! Sometimes when you click a link the page will go blank for several minutes then come back to the original page.

In addition, Internet Explorer is painfully slow opening up. I used to be able to zip around on this computer and now it's costing me hours of lost time and business.

After running Adaware, Spybot S&D and all the other spyware removal programs you suggested, only a couple of things came up like Claria which I removed.

I even updated my memory from 256K to 1 gig thinking that might be the problem.

Still no improvement.

Finally, I ran Hijackthis. I did read through your tutorial and it seems that first, it's not an exceptionally large log. Second, the 04 entries seem fairly harmless having checked them against recommended spyware lists. But I am unsure about the 08 and 016 entries.

What should I do now?

Signed,

Very frustrated....at your doorstep

Thanks a million in advance!

Answer:IE Slow As A Snail and Links Don't Work! Please Help...

After doing ALL of the TUTORIAL if you still have a problem:

Make sure you have HijackThis 1.99 and follow the guidelines on where to install it and how to post a log as an attachment. This is all covered in the sticky thread NO HIJACK THIS LOG FILES BEFORE READING THIS: HJT Tutorial & LOG File Posting

Now post a HijackThis log as an attachment to your message (Do not post the log inline). All running programs should be closed, INCLUDING YOUR WEB BROWSER, e-mail. Close before running Hijack This!

To repeat: Do NOT run Hijack This from the Desktop, a temp folder, or a sub-folder of C:\Documents and Settings, or choose to run it directly from the downloaded ZIP file. Place it in its own folder for example C:\Program Files\HJT

I took the Laptop into work and hooked it up to the wireless connection and the same thing happens. (No connection)

I think there might be a virus on this system stopping it from working.

Does anyone have any tips for stuff to check, Or any programs i can download, Burn to CD and run on his PC.

I was thinking Spybot Serach and destory and maybe Hi-jack this.

I have been having problems with this computer for a few weeks now, I haven't thought much of it until today when I noticed that I couldn't use Internet Explorer and my net was very slow compared to the other computer I use (on the same network/ internet connection).Malwarebytes removed several trojans including Rogue Security Suite, Trojan Hiloti, and one that has Hijack in the title but I guess something is still there, if someone could please take a look at my HJT log to see what could be the problem.Thank you,MalruxiaPS: I put the line that looks questionable to me in bold, thanks again.Logfile of Trend Micro HijackThis v2.0.2Scan saved at 10:49:55 PM, on 10/24/2010Platform: Windows XP SP3 (WinNT 5.01.2600)MSIE: Internet Explorer v7.00 (7.00.6000.17091)Boot mode: NormalRunning processes:C:\WINDOWS\System32\smss.exeC:\WINDOWS\system32\winlogon.exeC:\WINDOWS\system32\services.exeC:\WINDOWS\system32\lsass.exeC:\WINDOWS\system32\svchost.exeC:\WINDOWS\System32\svchost.exeC:\WINDOWS\system32\spoolsv.exeC:\WINDOWS\Explorer.EXEC:\Program Files\Java\jre6\bin\jqs.exeC:\Program Files\Eset\nod32krn.exeC:\WINDOWS\system32\nvsvc32.exeC:\Program Files\Eset\nod32kui.exeC:\WINDOWS\system32\svchost.exeC:\WINDOWS\system32\RUNDLL32.EXEC:\WINDOWS\system32\ctf... I got a new computer about a month ago, and it is already giving me trouble.

The first (minor) thing is that sometimes when I start windows windows loads but I can't move the mouse or use the keyboard. (Although windows does not appear to be frozen - the little text mark dissappears and reappears in my startup internet-dialer screen)

It doesn't always happen, and when it does restarting usually solves the problem.

Answer:Computer running to slow to get work done.

Hey,

I am having problems where the connection and overall feel of the computer is very slow when running windows remote desktop to connect to my work PC via VPN.

The actual speed of my home internet connection is 100MB so I though that this would give me a really nice speed and make working from a little more seamless however its not the case at all.

My laptop at home is pretty powerful and running windows 7, my desktop computer which I connect too runs windows xp.

Not sure if my broadband provider has anything to do with it however they are Virgin Media.

Can anyone offer me any advise or possible things to try?

Thanks

Scott

Answer:slow remote desktop when using VPN to work PC

It might actually be your companies security settings on there end. The way VPN works is that its a secure way to do things remotely, and generally doing stuff securely sometimes slows everything down, this is the same case. Heck, I'm on the same network remotting into an server and its very laggy.

I've got a bunch of 6 2TB drives from Windows 7 to CHKDSK. There's probably some minor corruption on them and before relying on any I want to see what errors we get and let NTFS fix them as best it can.

So I need to chkdsk them. I timed chkdsk /f /r of a 2TB drive in windows 7 on a quad core with 8GB for fun - after a week I had to kill it. It's a known problem with Win7 but this time I can't laugh.

Thinking how to work round it, I realised Windows 7 and Windows XP use the same version of NTFS, and on WinXP I used chkdsk all the time on 1TB+ drives, no problem.

The disks are pure data, there's no system files or alternate streams (apart from recycler and sys volume info).

How safe is it to attach these drives to WinXP 32 and chkdsk them, or to copy the standalone chkdsk.exe from Windows XP 64 and run it on Win7 x64 in compatibility mode?

Answer:Would this work? (Workaround for slow CHKDSK)

How will you attach them to the XP system? Internally? If so make sure you set the jumpers correctly so they are not seen as the boot drive. Other than that there should not be any problem.

If you have a XP installation CD you could also create a UBCD4WIN bootable CD and use it to run chkdsk against the drives. I've done this many times and it works well. The CD is slow to boot but once booted, you have XP including the Command Prompt where you can run chkdsk from.

I attempted the 5 steps, but the Panda thing said I need to use IE, which is not working correctly. I'm using Mozilla Firefox, but even this doesn't work correctly when I view a page using Quicktime. Other programs, including Guitar Pro, my tool for my music, isn't working properly and closes abruptly. I don't even attempt to use IE anymore, because it seems to freeze my computer.

I've also ran a couple of programs intended to rid of any viruses, but they don't seem to get them all. I'm not good with computers, so please excuse my lack of knowledge on anything...I ran a HijackThis and here is my logfile.

Hi all,

I work for a vet practice and we are testing out windows 10 for the update in July, however we are having issues with out database program, VIA. The program installs just fine and connects to the server fine, but the program is unbearably slow. It runs perfectly fine on Windows 7/8.1 but it can't handle W10, even in compatibility mode. I've tried uninstalling it and reinstalling but it isn't working. Please help.

Program info: VIA Practice Management Software v.8.0.0
Using MS SQLServer 2005

Answer:Work Program is slow to the point of being useless.

SQL Server 2005 is no longer a supported platform. It may still work, but I doubt you're going to get much support for it on Windows 10. I believe SQL Server 2008 R2 SP1 is the minimum supported version now. All older versions have been "End of lifed".

I'm not saying that this is your problem, but we're not going to be able to help you with a propriety app. You have to contact your app vendor, and at this point they will probably say "Come back when Windows 10 has been released".

Answer:my internet loads so slow and my pop-up blocker don't work

Welcome to Majorgeeks!

You forgot to empty your C:\Program Files\Norton AntiVirus\Quarantine folder as instructed in step 0 of the READ ME. You should do this now.

Make sure viewing of hidden files is enabled (per the tutorial).

Please run HijackThis and click on the Open the Misc Tools Section button on the open page. Then select Open process manager on the left-hand side. Look for the following process (or processes) and one at a time kill them by selecting it and then click Kill process. Then click yes.
C:\WINDOWS\system32\RNDLL3~1.EXE
C:\PROGRA~1\COMMON~1\RACLE~1\dexplore.exe

After killing all the above processes, click Back.
Then please click Scan and select the following lines but DO NOT CLICK FIX until you exit all browser sessions including the one you are reading in right now:

Hi Everyone,

I have a very strange problem. I am using a Windows 7 ASUS laptop N61J. I can connect to the internet fine at home and get good speeds at home. However, when I go to work and connect to the wireless there my internet speed is so slow I want to dig out my old dialup modem and start using that. I would fiddle around with the router itself but since it's at work all the people here use it so I don't want to fiddle around with it cause I may have an angry mob after me if mess up.

Everyone else at work seems to have okay internet speeds. I have noticed I am the only one using Win 7 - Professional.

Please help me. I've only started work at this new office a couple of days and if I am to pretend to be doing work I really need the internet.

Answer:Please Help:Painfully slow internet at work but okay at home.

Are you using homegroup? are there mixed OS'es on the work network? Are you using IPv6?

Can you type ipconfig /all in search and make a snip of the output and upload it to us?

I have a couple of problems with my internet/email (Yahoo).

Problem 1
=======
My hyperlinks does not work. For example (see the attached file). When I go to my Yahoo email, I first get the message as shown in the attachment. It never redirects me, hence my alternative is to click on the hyperlink. However, when I click on the hyperlink then nothing happens. What I currently do as a workaround is use the back button to go back to the yahoo page and then I click on "mail" again to get me to my emails.

I know this is some setup problem with Tools --> Internet Options. I have tried almost everything on what people have recommended on enabling or disabling the options, but the problem has not been fixed.

Problem 2
=======
This just started happening since a week ago. I have rebooted my computer a couple of times just to see if this problem would go away, but it hasn't. The problem is that when I go to my Yahoo email, it takes literally 2 to 3 minutes to open an email message even if this is without any attachments. This is extremely slow and frustrating. I am not sure why this has become so slow and what can I do to fix it.

I would appreciate any help. Thanks.

Regards,

Typhoonwinds

I was recently infected with some malware and had posted for help at

but I found that even after removing the malware completely my system startup time didnot improve.

Also I found that disk defragmenter wont work.I get the defragmentation window but when I give "analyze" or "defragment" I get the message "disk message could not start"
So I tried Installing system mechanic and have defragmented with it but still the startup is slow

Also I found that the problem of loading the explorer occurs if I pass through the start up page fast(I mean the welcome screen). In that case the desktop wont start and no processes are started after it
Then to load explorer I have to end the process "explorer" from the task manager and start the new process "explorer"

In either case it takes a long time to load all programs such that I can start any work!!!Many programs are loaded only after the network loads!!!
Only then I am able to open my computer or anything else for that matter

Also following advice by RichieUK I had tried unchecking all startup items from msconfig and tried restarting the system even that didnot improve the startup speeds .

After booting completely the system works just fine.

I dual boot with Vista but vista starts up fast enough
I use Windows XP Professional sp2

Greetings
Maybe it's not the right forum or right category but I don't know what to do and where to get help from.
On July 27 I upgraded from windows 7 ultimate to windows 10 pro.
Everything went smoothly for a month or so and than the pc became slow with non-stop hard disk work.

info
board: Gigabyte z-87
cpu: i7
ram: 8GB
system disk: 120GB ssd (Kingston)
programs disk: 3TB Seagate barracuda
pc age: 3 years

I went back with true image to August 1, cleaned with ccleaner and internal win10 cleaner, removed unnecessary services with msconfig (still working in win10), uninstalled unnecessary programs
Things got better but I have doubts on win10 ability to upgrade from win7.
I have a laptop with win 8.1 which I upgraded to windows 10 and it works fine.

I repartitioned and formatted the programs disk but copying from one partition to another takes a lot of time.
Questions:
1) should I replace the programs disk
2) should I replace the ssd (would my activated windows 10 will still be legitimate)
3) should I reinstall windows 10 pro (where can I get it? in microsoft site I can only buy it regardless of the fact that I upgraded while it was free)
many thanks

hi there

i have a Dell laptop and at work we have all machines with a "domain" setup with 3 network drives mapped as well.

Everything works pretty well at work when we are on the domain environment or on the work wifi but i noticed that if i am at home or on another network it takes forever for the win7 startup and also IE10 seems to load very slowly from time to time when i open it.

I have searched a bit and this seems to be a common problem when a domain PC cannot find the DC, so is there a way to fix this? Or to lower the timeout or something?

I have already installed 2 patches from Microsoft recently but it didn't help, in particular ive installed :

You experience a long domain logon time in Windows Vista, Windows 7, Windows Server 2008 or Windows Server 2008 R2 after you deploy Group Policy preferences to the computer

Long startup or logon time when no domain controllers are available on a Windows 7-based or Windows Server 2008 R2-based domain member computer

Thanks
Gab

We have optimum online internet. We were given the modem and also a router as well to use. Its the netgear n600 router. We also have VOIPO phone service as well connected as we need internet on or the voipo won't work.

I have noticed that the wifi sometimes would not work. I could not connect to it. But those times that it does work, it would have some very short disconnects like a few seconds then it would go back to connected.

However when i put an ethernet cable to it and thus a wired connection from the laptops, rarely is there any issue with the internet. There might be a short disconnect for a bit but i haven't noticed it yet.

Is there a reason for this? We put the router in the 2nd floor in this house and we basically put it on top of a very short table. Basically its placed about 1 feet over that little table... that little table also has the modem and our cordless phone and thus the voipo.

I know location of the router is important but could putting it a bit too low like just 1 feet above the floor be a cause of this?

Could it be the router issue itself as i read many routers would disconnect throughout the day? I did check online and i did read a few ppl mention this about this router.

Optimum online gave us this router to use while we signed up for their cable internet service only. Thus if we cancel the service we have to return it back to them. Has anyone here used this router and ca... Read more

Answer:Wireless Internet Doesn't Work or Very Slow?

This is very strange. We have 2 other laptops. Those 2 laptops we cannot connect to the wifi. Either it connects and show limited activity or doesn't connect at all.
The sager laptop however... has zero issues connecting to the wifi.
Can someone tell me why this is happening? I did unplug the wires for the modem, router and the VOIP but same issue.
So we have to used a wired connection with an ethernet cable for one of the other computers. The asus one can't connect wifi so i want to use that, i have to do wired.
My iphone doesn't even connect wifi either. If thats the case... why would my sager laptop have no issue with connecting to the wifi?

Hi folks,

I am interested if anyone could help me out diagnosis my work laptop. In recent months, I have noticed that my work laptop has been starting up slow when Windows launches. I have always done a Spybot S&D, Adaware, and now AVG Free Anti-spyware on a weekly basis. However, it seems even that doesn't help. I have also limited my services that start up when Windows loads. I will include a screen shot of my services that are currently running and ones that disable.

Anyway, my laptop specs are as follows:

HP Pavilion Dv2000
Windows XP PRO SP2
Intel Core Duo T5600 1.86 GHz
2 GB of RAM
80 GB HDD

I'm on an xp and have been using Firefox for quite a while now with no problems. Recently, when I go to open Firefox, it appears to launch (I have it set to go right to Google) but before I can put something in to google, I get a pop-up from "Netscape Quality Feedback Agent - Firefox 10" which wants to send an error message to Microsoft, I think. I then get a second pop-up from Firefox saying "firefox.exe has encountered a problem and needs to close. We are sorry for the inconvenience" also asking can it send an error message back in this case to Firefox? The result is that Firefox closes and I can't get to it. Interestingly enough, if I happen to get the odd e-mail from E-bay reminding me to bid on something and I click on the link in the e-mail, I can usually get Firefox to open that way? My computer is also running very slow when I try to shut it down or start it up. Prior to running Spybot, Adware, Panda, etc. in safe mode, I was also having trouble getting Spybot to create a recover point (so it would freeze at that point and not complete the Spybot process) and Panda also wouldn't run. The scans didn't really seem to find much (Panda deleted some viruses starting with Tri/Mitglieder with different extensions. I've also noticed (and I could be wrong) but it seems that I continually set my McAfee Virus Scan to run automatically, but I'm not sure that it is (I do go in and do it manually though). I have posted a HJT log below -- any ideas or ... Read more

Im not sure where to begin trouble shooting with this problem.

Wireless connection works flawlessly at work (secured - any browser)

but when i connect to my home wireless (secured - any browser) its VERY sluggish "resolving..." in the status bar. Once the page loads, its fine for a few clicks or new web addresses, then it re-cycles to being sluggish on "resolving..."

When in the sluggish i open the wireless network status and my packets come send/recieve very slow - no more than a few packets per second... and obviously higher opposite when loading pages.

Answer:Laptop - Fast at work/Slow at home

What ISP do you have, I've seen WOW having DNS issues lately, and I've heard the same of comcast but not experienced that, you can try to change your DNS to openDNS or 4.2.2.2, 4.2.2.1 and see if that helps resolve names faster.

Got 50/10 internet today but when I run speedtest with my desktop PC results are following:

I only get about 0.6 Mbps upload with this device but with my laptop (connected it to same cable than my PC) and with my phone (wifi) I get stable 10 Mbps.

I'm using Windows firewall and Microsoft Security Essentials (same with my laptop). Also tried closing firewall but that didn't make any difference.

Answer:Slow upload speed with 1 PC, others work fine

Well I got it sorted out, it seems that Net Limiter 3 does limit speeds even while it is not running :P

Ok, I should be slapped! I have known this hard drive would fail but I still don't have all my stuff off of it. I have been at it the last 2 days and am desperate right now. I have another machine built to almost the same specs as the one with the failing hard drive. Could I just put this drive as the slave to the other hard drive and get my info off? I would use my jump drive or burn some cd's but when I do get the thing to come up, of course it won't let me stick the jump drive in or burn a cd---it just halts the thing. OK, if you have any other suggestions please post and HELP me!!!

Thanks!

Hi, hope this is the correct part of the forum to ask this question.

This is the situation

Small business ( location 1) with 12 users , 1 NAS with shared files, the location of the office can only get 3.5mb internet, quite slow.
The MD of the company has VPN access to the network and has a 50mb connection at home ( location 2) .
He often uses large files and finds that the VPN connection is very slow to access stuff at location 1
I can see the bottleneck is the 3.5mb connection at location 1.

How can I improve the current setup?

1. No Fibre and going down the leased line route and upgrading the internet at location 1 is too expensive.

2. I thought about having a cloud sync of the data on the NAS so the MD when at home on his 50MB connection can pull down files much quicker.
What I don't want to do is have to have a local copy of all the NAS data from location 1 on his laptop.

3. Maybe it would be better for the MD to have a workstation at home with a dropbox account syncing all the data off the NAS onto his local workstation machine.

Any advice would be great.

My computer is working slowly and is running 41 processes when there are no programs running.

Whenever the computer boots, I get a "Windows was forced to shut down..." message which I think refers to my calendar trying to deliver an alert upon start up.

I cannot get MS Works to run, but receive the same error message as above.

Thanks in advance,

George

ok, so the other day i was surfering the web and zone alarm showed up and it said something along the lines of .dll i forget the name because it was a really long one, anyway i accidently hit ok. and i guess it installed or deleted the .dll, so i panicked and shut down my internet access, and ran a few virus programs which were spybot search & destroy, and avg. i restarted my computer and my background actually said my computer was infected, and i needed to install an anti-virus.. so i restored my computer to earlier this month. this had little affect (my background turned back to the original one)i notice the main problem when i start my computer, it takes a good 3-7 minutes to load.. and thats saying if it shows the start bar and icons.. when it dosnt i have to hit ctrl-alt-del > go to run and try and open a folder.. this forces the start bar and icons show. also, im a frequant firefox user, and once this .dll got changed firefox wont open certain pages such as gmail, neither would IE.. i was able to update both programs (firefox 3, IE7) but still the same. i discovered however that the most recent version of netscape works perfectly and loads all of my pages. Also, im having random system freezing, when my cpu usage skyrockets to around 90%. i have a good -- well great computer, and iv never used more then 20% cpu usage even while running newer games. now at idle im at about 50%. i am also have trouble updating all of my programs, which is why i couldnt run the Kasp... Ever since upgrading to IE5.5 it takes ages to start the browser - it seems to want to check all the fonts on the computer - can I disable this??

Also since the upgrade , despite all java functions being enabled under options I some time get blank image tags on certain websites where a java applet or similar should be. Read somewhere that this was due to "sloppy" programming on the website - is this true - is there a solution??

3) should I reinstall windows 10 pro (where can I get it? in microsoft site I can only buy it regardless of the fact that I upgraded while it was free)
many thanks
Ziv

I used HiJackThis to diagnose possible problems. I came up with approximately 35 possible problems. However, this came with warnings not to "Fix" a possible problem unless I was sure it would not hurt Windows XP program.

How do I tell which support program is good and which is bad?

Hi,

My wireless at work is painful or non-existent at work -- but works fine elsewhere.

A connection is always made to the router, but it will just completely freeze -- or move at was seems like 32kb/s -- making attaching files in Gmail almost impossible.

I don't understand the inconsistency -- other people in the office do not have this problem, although some people have had it occasionally. I have no problems whatsoever at home -- so I presume it is some interaction with the router?

I may have the same problem, at times, elsewhere when connecting to public networks -- but that may just be speed in those cases.

I did do a driver cleaning, and may have removed the factory installed drivers -- I went to HP for their G-72 drivers, and downloaded them all -- since I wasn't sure which was the proper one for the wireless adapter -- and installed them all -- which at least made the bars of connectivity appear accurately, whereas before it would always show empty with an orange star even if connected well.

Any ideas? -- Here is my ipconfig /all
