Can't get UDP to work with RDP 8.0 on Win7 client - Win10 Host

Question: Can't get UDP to work with RDP 8.0 on Win7 client - Win10 Host

We (me and a fellow worker) have just started using remote desktop to work. I have been using NetSupport Manager for almost 10 years but just switched to Windows 10 on virtual PC at work and discovered that remote desktop performance with UDP is leaving NetSupport Manager in the dust, performance wise.

I have opened the UDP port for my PC and use in UDP mode since Friday. I just cloned the virtual PC for my fellow worker and adjusted his user. I connect to this PC and UDP is enabled. But he is on Windows 7 x64 and he is not able to obtain the UDP enabled.

Yes, he installed the updates for RDP 8.0 and it shows it.
But UDP is still not working.
I tried to update to RDP 8.1 but it says this:
Any idea ? I suggested to upgrade to Windows 10 but I would rather find a solution for Windows 7 since it is supposed to work.

Preferred Solution: Can't get UDP to work with RDP 8.0 on Win7 client - Win10 Host

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Server OS Windows Server 2012 Essentials
Client OS: Windows 7 Professional

I recently upgraded from Home Server 2011 to Essentials 2012. This required me to create a Domain which I did, and the other PC's connect with no problem. Using the same procedure to connect my main machine, and it does not see any other computers that are in the domain when I go to network places, not even the server. I have checked that the primary DNS is pointing to 2012 Essentials server. I can connect to the other PCs by manually typing in the other PC names.

Another problem is that I cannot access the shared folders in the Dashboard. I log in as an administrator and have checked permissions. When I try to access these shared folders it gives me the access denied message.

Does anyone know what is going on with these two problems?

Thanks for your help in advance.

Answer:One client not seeing other computers in the Domain. Client OS Win7, Server OS 2012

I didn't use 2012 Essentials yet - only regular 2012 and domain is working without any problem.
Main thing is that client pc must have dns connected to server - on server you can set forwarding for external internet access.
If you have problems with domain you could try rejoin to domain on client PC - you'll verify then that everything is configured properly - I can recommend tool called Profile Wizard http://www.forensit.com/Profwiz/ It's great for rejoining to domain or when you want to switch to other domain without lose your profile.
Maybe Dasboard require for local administrator privileges to work properly ?

Hi,
My disk contains 5 partitions:
part1 = ntfs-win10 free upgrade of win home premium (primary)
Part2 = ntfs-win7 home premium (primary)
Part3 = ext3-Extended (logical)
Part4 = ext3-LM rafaela (extended)
Part5 = swap (extended)
This setup worked good.

Part2 win7 got buggered, and reinstalled (nvidia chip-set melt down during win7 boot). The MB was replaced.

I can no longer get to win10 boot Part1. Booting to Part1 or Part2 results to booting the newly installed win7. Rafaela boot did not change: still working.

How can I reclaim my win10 boot? I can't upgrade for free anymore so I'm hoping there's a way to work with what's there.

Thanks,
Keith

Answer:Lost Win10 in Multiboot disk partition Win7, Win10 and LM Rafaela

You could use EasyBCD to add Win10 to the boot code.
EasyBCD Documentation

Take care not to screw up the Linux entry.
I'm pretty sure EasyBCD makes a backup - but it's been quite a while.

Read first, plan 2nd, backup the BCD store - then execute the plan

My machine has two boot volumes. vol3 (win7 now win10) and vol5 (win8 tp10).
After automatic upgrade of win7p to Win10p(64) on vol3, all appeared to be well. It activated just fine (good network) and Edge and Chrome work fine. However, IE11, FireFox, Thunderbird, iolo SystemMechanic, Netgear Pro Switch config, MSI Live Update and maybe many more have no access to sockets.
I disabled the Firewall and Defender!
I loaded sysinternals TCPView and observed that both Edge and Chrome open/close ports and reach endpoints but none of the "apps of interest" reach the IP stack on the upgrade 10.
The TP 10 on vol5 is my litmus test.. IE11, FF, TB and Netgear all work on this install. A lot to be said for a clean install.
I used hijackthis to compare the two installs.. the TP10 generates a 1 page report and the ug10 3 pages.. lots of leftovers..
My diagnostic tree is getting shorter. Anyone have anything to add?
David

Answer:Win10 TP AOK, Win7 > Win10 soso. IE11 has no tcpip access...

Now because I read in some forum someone did not like "thank you its fixed" answers.
So...
Hijackthis revealed excessive duplicate LSP entries for SpeedBit Video Accelerator.
LSPfix did not find any problems, but did show the offending LSP entry.
After uninstalling SpeedBit and rebooting;
Bing change my wallpaper and I knew the issue was resolved. IE11 etc. work as expected.

Thankyou

I'm still playing with Win10 on a tablet and not ready to install it on my main computer. Meanwhile, there are 32 Windows 7 updates pending. I've selected all 32 in Windows Update, then clicked the OK button, but that just takes me to a screen for installing Win10. I'm not sure what happens if I click OK there, but it looks like clicking OK will install Win10 which I do NOT want to do. I just want to install the 32 Win7 updates.

I did notice that one of the optional updates was the Upgrade to Windows 10 Pro and that the checkbox to install it was pre-checked. I did uncheck it but I still got the screen that said "Downloading Windows 10".

Is it possible that I'm safe to proceed after seeing the "Downloading Windows 10" message as long as I made sure to uncheck the Upgrade to Windows 10 Pro checkbox?

Two Windows 7 Home Premium 64-bit computers on the same network, the desktop has a printer shared that the laptop would like to access.

The oddness began after I managed to get the laptop to access the desktop via Start > Run > \\desktop, successfully connected up the printer via filesharing and tested it, but every time I restart the laptop it decides that it can't find the desktop any more.

However, if I do Start > Run \\192.168.0.6 (the IP address of the desktop) from the laptop, it connects successfully every time. I've set things up like that for now, but I can't say I've ever seen an issue like this before.

If I do a name lookup on either machine, it resolves the desktop's IP address correctly, regardless of restarting the laptop. If I do \\192.168.0.6, let that open a connection successfully, then do \\desktop, it works. If I just reboot and do \\desktop, it doesn't.

Ideally I would like it to work via computer names so that the desktop doesn't require a static IP.

Answer:Win7 <-> Win7 file sharing issue after client reboot

These days we use something called User permissions and security settings to establish safe reliable network connections.

You can just right click the folders you want to share and choose the security and permissions settings, they tend to stay put after that. Or you can click on the "share" tabs and go from there. If you are using all Windows 7 machines in this network then setting up a Home group is the way to go.

Here's the situation. I have a 17" laptop with two Win 7 drives set up with dual boot. One is a 128gb SSD with all my work software. (AutoCad, Rhino, etc) The other is a new 256 SSD with only the Win7 OS installed. Both use the same laptop Product key.

I would like to update the new 256 SSD to Win 10 and over time transition my software to that drive. However, while I'm doing that, I'll need the other Win7 system drive to work with.

My question is, If I update the 256 SSD to Windows 10, doesn't that activation use my current Win 7 key to register? And if so, does the activated Win 10 deactivate or invalidate my Windows 7 OS Key on the other drive?

Answer:Will update Win7>Win10 deactivate second Win7 drive in a Dual boot?

Nobody seems to want to answer you mate as what you are doing is not legal.

Now then on a practical level I don't think you will have any problems because of the fact that you can reinstall your original OS with your original product key anytime you like, however I have not tested this.

Hi,

I have a dual boot set up - Windows 7 Ultimate 64-bit on an SSD drive and Windows 8.1 on a second hard drive. I would like to upgrade Windows 8.1 to Windows 10 and keep the Windows 7 OS in tact.

Is this possible? Can I just go through the upgrade process from Windows 8.1? Any possible gotchas I should be aware of?

I've seen a few threads discussing Unbuntu or Linux as a second partition but didn't see one for this situation. Apologies if I missed a similar thread.

Thanks for any help you can provide!

Hey Jim, welcome to tenforums.com!

You should be okay to upgrade within W8, I don't foresee any problems. You could/should make backups just in case.

I'm trying to setup ICS between two XP PCs, as well as File and Printer Sharing. The host is directly connected to the net via ADSL, and is connected physically to the client via a cable. I've looked all over the net for solutions, but the problem doesn't seem to be solved. My host comp can't ping to the client, but my client has no problem pinging the host. Also, the Deafult Gateway icon is missing. My guess is that something is wrong with the client's IP since I used the IP can't be found via third-party softwares, even though I'm sure I've assigned a static IP to the client. I've even double-checked with ipconfig.
Client's IP: 192.168.0.2
Host's IP: 192.168.0.1
I tried using CCProxy and the IP works, but I still want to use XP's ICS, since there are limitations to using a proxy. On a note, ICS has worked successfully on these PCs in the past. It no longer works after I reformatted one of the PCs.

Furthermore, I have problems with the file sharing. I tried sharing a folder on the host computer, and then map the network drive from the client. The error message appears, "The specified server cannot perform the requested operation". If anyone can tell me what exactly is the problem, I'll appreciate it. Thanks in advance.

Well it toke me about a week to find out this solution after googling and reading alot of hours....!!!!

Using desktop with XP Host
Laptop 7 Client
LAN on the desktop (2 cards 1 from router -1 to laptop 7)

On XP After enabling ICS u don't need to configure any thing but ther is a little notice wich was the key to end this suffer

Acorrding to microsoft i found that when u enable ICS in XP
It gives ur seconed adapter a unique IP never changes : 192.168.0.1
and the Subnet Mask is always : 255.255.255.0

Well if u enabled ur ICS on XP don't do any thing else
no need to install any protocols or any thing u only go to ur host wich is Seven here
and configure the adapters IP ,Gateway ,DNS like this

U dont have to copy this offcourse but that was my case for example
but u have to make an IP in the same range provided from ur XP adapter wich connects to Seven

Know why because i think Auto configuring IP's between Seven and XP is not recomnded here as it makes Conflict in IP's and Seven Never fix it
In few words:
Its IP conflict Issue

To have a little background about IP and networks is a good idea

so...!
i hope it helps any body in the same situation and i hope to hear from any body who used XP as a HOST.

I know its not a wonder but for me it solved alot of things....

Answer:My humble -ICS- (XP HOST - 7 CLIENT)

It did worked for me too.

XP Desktop was the HOST with:
192.168.0.1 as the IP
255.255.255.0 as mask
both for the router adapter

WIN 7 was the CLIENT with:
192.168.0.2 as IP
255.255.255.0 as mask
192.168.0.1 as gateway
192.168.1.1 as DNS

Guys ! I'm having trouble with remote access; can anyone please tell me if the following statement is true or false ?

"The host computers are machines that will be used to acces the client machines and remotely control them. the client machines are the computers that will be controlled."

TIA

Answer:Host/Client Question

hmm, Yes. But not in all situations. Host=server. Servers and clients can be remotely controlled. I can remotely log in to a server and control it from my pc or i can log on to a client and control it from the server. but they may be refering to which ever system you are trying to remote from as the host machine. they may consider which ever computer you are using as the host. need more context in which you have read this statement?

For some reason, I cannot get my XP desktop to share it's internet connection with my Windows 7 laptops. I have setup the ad-hoc network and ran the home network setup wizard. In internet connections, it shows that the ethernet connection is shared, but in Win 7 on laptop, it will connect to the adhoc network, but it will not access the net. Am I doing something wrong?

Answer:Solved: AD-HOC Between XP (Host) and Win 7 (Client)

Let's see this from the desktop.
Hold the Windows key and press R, then type CMD then press Enter to open a command prompt:

In the command prompt window that opens, type type the following command:

Note that there is a space before the /ALL, but there is NOT a space after the / in the following command.

IPCONFIG /ALL

Right click in the command window and choose Select All, then hit Enter to copy the contents to the clipboard.
Paste the results in a message here.

If you are on a machine with no network connection, use a floppy, USB disk, or a CD-RW disk to transfer a text file with the information to allow pasting it here.

I have one computer, the host, running Vista Ultimate. The other is running XP Home. I will be upgrading it to Vista Ultimate sooner or later, but for now I just need to share the internet connection running to the Vista PC with the XP PC. I don't have a router, or the money to get one right now (That's my next splurge). I have two ethernet cards in the Vista PC. I have one in the XP PC. I have a crossover cable so that it will be able to transfer data. Now, what I am asking, is how do I set up the ICS between Vista and XP? I've yet to get a connection. It just says Limited or No Connectivity.

If anyone knows how to do this, please, explain to me. I would be forever grateful. (Anything to shut my wife up at this point. ^_^)

This is my 2. day with Windows 7. I'm having difficulties sharing an internet connection. There's a one-way connection only, apparently.

Host: Windows 7 build 7100 (192.168.0.1).
Client: Debian (192.168.0.2).

Host and client is connected via cross-over cable. Host features a second network connection to a switch box.

I can connect to Samba share on client, and ping 192.168.0.2 too. SSH login on client is accessible also. But I can't ping host at 192.168.0.1 from client. Therefore no internet connection

I'm kind of lost, so any help much appreciated.

Anyone had WFP on a network before?

I just finished a client install, 5 XP clients (exsisting) and a Small Business Server 2003. Put WFP on SBS2003 and it works fine for fetching and sending faxes. However I cannot connect the clients!

The winfax service is started in the server services, the WFP clients can ping the WFP host. But they give an error which says that there is an invalid user attempting to logon and to check the username and password.

Only problem is there is no password (putting one on doesnt solve it) and there are no usernames. All the client machine names on the domain are ok and the users are all authenticated.

Totally clueless and would appreciate any help

Many thanks

Hi all

This appears to be an old chestnut, and despite searching everywhere, I have not been able to resolve the problem.

My PC:
Vista Ultimate 32bit SP 1
HP LaserJet 1020 connected via USB
Network Discovery: On
File Sharing: On
Public Folder Sharing: On (read only)
Printer Sharing: On
Password Protected Sharing: Off
Media Sharing: Off
Workgroup Name: WORKGROUP

My Wife's Laptop
XP Home Edition SP 3
Workgroup Name: WORKGROUP

Both machines have both accounts with matching passwords.

Network browsing is not a problem - folders and files are accessible. However, network printing is proving to be a nightmare!

I have tried to add the printer on the XP laptop as a networked printer and as a local printer using a local port of \\vistacomputer\hp laserjet 1020, but both result in the same problem: the job "seems" to print and can be seen in both computers' printer queues, but nothing outputs. It is only when I stop and restart the spooler on the Vista computer that the job actually prints!

The print$ share can be seen from both computers, so I don't think it's security related.

Does anybody have any other ideas what I can check?

Regards

DG

Yes, Windows 10 supports FTP.

Answer:Host wont recognize client - pings ok

Check your Services are Started on all PCs:

Computer Browser
DHCP Client
DNS Client
Network Connections
Network Location Awareness
Remote Procedure Call (RPC)
Server
TCP/IP Netbios helper
Workstation

Note: You can check the services in Control Panel, Administrative Tools, Services.

All of these services should be started, and their startup type should be automatic (or perhaps manual).

I'd also like to see this for each computer.

Hold the Windows key and press R, then type CMD to open a command prompt:

Type the following command:

IPCONFIG /ALL

Right click in the command window and choose Select All, then hit Enter.
Paste the results in a message here.

If you are on a machine with no network connection, use a floppy, USB disk, or a CD-RW disk to transfer a text file with the information to allow pasting it here.

Answer:Vista Host Won't Share Internet with XP Client

I just thought I'd update this in case anyone else ends up in the same boat. By default my network was on public and the connection wouldn't work. In the process of trying to find the setting blocking it, I made the shared connection (default private) public too figuring that would be correct. The thought process was that public means anything goes, so the internet should flow and share without anything blocking it (not the case apparently). After a couple days of trying every solution possible (assigning static ip's, bridging connections and others I'd seen from google searches), I decided to change the main connection to 'Private' and of course it worked. Just a simple setting, but it had me stumped and I'm probably not the only one. The shared connection STILL says 'Local Only' where the host says 'Local and Internet" ... but it works. I'm not sure if that is saying that it doesn't have it's own internet connection or for some reason it just works. This is my first plunge into Vista.

Just to reiiterate my problems were I could see and share files with a Vista host and XP client, but no internet on client. I would share the internet like any other version of ICS and then the host wouldn't have internet...neither would the XP client.

I Have access to VMware Workstation, vCenter, vSphere and several others. I've heard of IaaS providers farming out computer resources for fees. That got me thinking, what if instead of buying a new laptop because the current one that I have is very old and slow, I can host a server on my premises to supply the extra processing power for the laptop. Am I crazy or can this software do this?Currently I have a powerful desktop computer which is greatly underutilized when in use which could be the server. I could then create a bare-bones new machine which would be my new desktop, pulling resources directly from the server and with that I would also be able to essentially turn my old laptop into something usable. From my understanding, this setup would be a type 1 hypervisor server with two clients but I've spent several hours researching this and I feel that nobody else is trying to do this or I have the vocabulary wrong because I can't find any answers. If this setup were to happen, they would be connected with either gigabit ethernet or 802.11ac wireless (desktop vs laptop). The laptop would be used for standard laptopy things and the desktop would be used for software development, goofing off and gaming. I would likely build a new server utilizing very new hardware if this works out. Please let me know if this is such a thing! IaaS providers do this, can I do it myself?

Hi everyone, please help~~ I have been struggling for 2 days on this simple VMWare desktop deployment/composition.

After all the reading patiently today.. finally I know how to setup a KMS host. I made a win7 to be KMS host, and create the _vlmc srv record in the dns. I ran some commands to verify the status on the KMS host and it seems to be fine.

Now I would like to ask...let's say...after finishing a Windows 7 client installation.... Do I need to do something to make that Windows 7 client to be KMS client? Also, do I need to take any actions at all to activate the windows 7 license on the client?
( for example, click on the "activation link in the Computer properties") Or is it automatically access to the KMS host?

How about the Office Pro? On the same Win7 running KMS host for Win7 to be Office KMS host as well? Do I need to install Office on the KMS host again? What do I need to do to make the client to act as a kms client? Or is it also running automatically?

Thank you very much in advance, and hope you can share your ideas.

I setup a VPN on a remote computer running W7. I configured the Incoming Connection using the W7 network settings.

I forwarded the port 1723 for the PPTP connection in the router for this PC.

I am able to make the connection from my local computer at my house to the remote computer, and I can ping the IP's of all the computers on the remote network. I can even access the network shares of most of the computers shares by using the,\ipaddressofremotecomputer, example \\192.168.0.100. So you may think whats the problem, everything appears to be working.

The problem is the remote computer running the Incoming Connection. I can ping the IP address of this remote computer, but when I try to access it using it's known IP address, \\192.168.0.100, it shows me MY LOCAL Network Shares, on my own client PC, instead of the networks shares of the remote computer. It's treating that remote IP address of 192.168.0.100 as one of mine, and I used a different subnet all together. My local network uses 192.168.254.x

I do not understand why it does this and because of it, I can not access the network shares on that one remote computer.

Here are more details:

The connection is over the internet, and the remote site is using a static IP.

My local IP range for the client PC, (the one I'm using to access the remote site) is 192.168.254.x

The remote computer's IP range is 192.168.0.x

The remote computer running the VPN (Incoming Server Connection) is 192.168.0.100... Read more

Answer:VPN: Host Seems to Mirror Client's PC Network Shares

Come on guys, 210 views and no one has any suggestions! I have searched Google and have found nothing regarding this VPN behavior, surely someone has an inclination as to what it causing this. It is extremely frustrating.

An another small detail to add to my original post.

The 192.168.0.100 of the remote PC that mirrors back to my client computer and uses my local networks shares instead of the remotes network shares also displays the computer name of my local client computer instead of the remote PC's name. So the remote PC IP address of 192.168.0.100 is definitely being meshed into my local client's network of 192.168.254.x an hence showing me only the network shares of my local client PC instead of the remote PC.

Sorry to drag these sentences out, but I want to make sure I give you as much detail as possible to help clear up any misunderstanding, as I know it's easy to confuse which PC/network I may be referring too, if I don't.
Thanks
Mike

I really am hoping someone here can help because the help desk at Microsoft is useless beyond imagining and I have been dealing with this problem for 2 weeks now! We have a network of 3 computers, all were working fine. Host running XP home (dial up internet connection), both clients running XP Pro. One client had sp2 upgrade couple of months ago with no problem.

We installed sp2 on the host computer and suddenly the 2nd client (comp without sp2 upgrade) could no longer browse the internet. In a bizzare twist, we can go to www.google.com and search and access the news feature (getting current results, not cached pages) but any attempt to click on a hyperlink results in the dreaded "Page cannot be displayed" showing up. I cannot access any other web site (msn.com, microsoft.com, eBay.com etc.) without the Page cannot be displayed. The 1st client can browse just fine as can the host.

I can access files across all three computers, we installed sp2 on the 2nd computer, we upgraded the host to XP Pro. I have run anti virus (norton) and spyware (spybot) on the computer, they did not turn up anything other than a data miner which I removed. I have compared the lan settings between the 1st and 2nd clients to make sure nothing is different other than the ISP for each computer. I am at wits end. I have used Winsock xp fix and Lsp fix with no joy. I have flushed things and reset things and I am going to go crazy very soon. Since the computer is obviously c... Read more

Answer:client browsing prob. after sp2 install on host

Have you disabled the XP firewall on each PC? You can find this in the properties of the NIC under "Network Connections" in the Control Panel.

Can you ping microsoft.com from a command prompt?
Have you set EVERYTHING in your browser to defaults, and assured that there are no "restricted" sites?
Have you tried a different browser?
Try using 4.2.2.2 for your primary DNS, and 4.2.2.3 for your alternate DNS. This is found in the TCP/IP properties for the properties of the NIC.

I have a desktop computer running Win7 and a thin client (Wyse V90L) running Win XP Embedded. I am using Remote Desktop to log into my desktop computer running Win7. The problem is that despite having set up Remote Desktop on the client to 'Play on this Computer', no audio plays. When I click on the volume control, there is no slider and instead the message 'no audio device is installed' is displayed. If I choose to leave sound at my desktop, then it functions as expected.

The client plays its own sounds just fine.

Any ideas to try? Thanks a lot.

I've been having problems trying to get a network connection between 2 computers. The win98 computer is the host and has the connection to the internet, the xp one is the client. I have set up each one as it sould be using several different guides which all say the sme thing, but I can't get the host to see any other computer than itself, and the xp computer can only occasionally see the host, and isn't able to connect to it even when it can. I'd quite like to be able to get the xp computer to connect to the internet through the 98 one.I've looked everywhere for a reason\fix that doesn't involve buying more programs or upgrading to xp, but if there is one, i can't find it! Can anyone please help?I'm not sure what more details to give; ask and I'll tell!

Hi,

This one is really baffling me now...

I have windows 7 ultimate x64 on host and client for ICS.

Host is a laptop with a WIFI card and an Ethernet Card. (Sharing its WIFI through the ethernet card to the PC)

Client is a PC with only a Ethernet Card.

-------------------

Everything is working fine (I have internet from both - can ping each other etc)

But i cannot ping the actual router from the client (PC) - I can ping it fine from the laptop.

Says: Reply from 192.168.1.20: Destination Host Unreachable. (then repeats)

-------------------

Am i missing something? or is it supposed to work like this?

Any help would be majorlly appreachated - as i cannot get to the router login page from any computer other than the laptop which is connected to it wirelessly.

Thank you in advance?

Answer:Client cannot ping router through host (ICS) - No other problems...

I'm not 100% sure how ics works but my assumption would be that it acts as a router and as such is a layer 3 boundry device. What I would try doing is using a different subnet for the link from the pc to the laptop something like 192.168.2.0/24 as what I think is happening here is from the desktop when you try to access the router it is switching rather than routing and an ics box won't forward on layer 2 packets. I could be off the mark but try a different range on that link

Hello, thought I better ask for help before I have no hair left.

Anyway, downstairs I have a dell desktop running windows xp (the host pc) with an external d-link wireless adsl 2+ router. Upstairs I have a dell laptop (the client pc) that connects to the internet wirelssly via this router. This has all been running just fine for months until I recently tried to establish file sharing between the host and client.

I managed to access host files from the client but not vice versa. When i tried to sort this out I must have changed some settings on the host pc that are now preventing it from accessing either the network or the internet. ['1394 connection' is connected at 400mbps but under 'activity' it has sent 0 and received 0. 'local area connection' is connected at 100mbps and has sent around 22,000 and received around 60 but this hasn't changed for 5 days.] The client pc still connects just fine to both the network and the internet. Is this a common beginners mistake, any ideas?

Apologies if this is a problem already posted.

Hi

I am having severe problems connecting to the net. When it does connect the DHCP Client and the Host Process for Windows crashes one after another. Then audio becomes disabled automatically and the Windows Security center is also turned off by itself. Because of those connection problems I cannot update my Antivirus programs. I tried system restore but it asks me to Check Disk because there are file system corruptions in C:/. But when I click start on Check disk it just closes. I've also got the google redirect malware as well. I've scanned the system with Avira and Ad-aware and nothing was found. Trendmicro Housecall found Mal_Otorun1 but housecall keeps on crashing due to the connection problems as well. I can't install Spybot because it requires to connect to internet before installation. In safe mode the same problems persist. I have tried everything and I would appreciate it if someone could get rid of this debilitating problem.

Thanx

I have set up a network with a wireless laptop (XP Pro)and a wired desktop (XP Home) connecting via a linksys broadband g router. I can: see the laptop and see /open laptop files in the desktop network places window, see but not open desktop files on the laptop, access internet from both computers, print from both computers from a machine connected to the desktop. I cannot change the firewall settings on the desktop ethernet card because it says associated service is not running, can't start ICS service. The goal is to be able to share files between the two computers not just merely have them both connected to the Internet. Pinging at all IP's now stands at 100% unsuccessful altho. at one point (before I made too many setting changes) I could ping the desktop from the laptop but not vice versa. HELP!

Hi, I have been looking for this answer for quite some time now, and I have finally figured it out, and I figured I would share it with the world, even though its probably floating around somewhere already.
In the instance that you have multiple computers, with Vista as the host, here is what I did to share wireless internet through a router to the rest of my computers with LAN.

First step.
Go into your "Manage Network Connections" Folder from Network and Sharing Center.
Make sure your wireless connection is not set to share at this time.

Second Step.
Highlight both, your LAN connection, and your Wireless internet, and create a bridge (Right click with them both highlighted, and click Create Network Bridge.)

Third Step.
Go into your Properties for the Network Bridge, and Unclick the Wireless connection from the list at the top of the menu. (Also, make sure your IP4 IP adress is set to 192.168.0.1)
Apply these settings and wait for Windows to Move the wireless connection out of the bridge.

Last Step.
When it is done moving, go into your wireless properties, and share the internet connection.
When this is done, make sure all of your other computers have thier IP4 IP address set to automatic.

When this is all done, you should be able to surf the internet with all of your XP Computers with Vista as the Host.

I'm pulling my hair out over this one. I've trawled the web to find a solution but can't find anything anywhere so I'm really hoping someone can help!

I recently bought a Netcomm NB5Plus4W ADSL 2+ Modem Router. I've connected it successfully to the host computer (my desktop - which I'm on now) and I'm able to access the internet no worries. When I try to add my HP Pavilion Notebook (client) to the network, it won't automatically assign an IP address so I manually assign 192.168.1.3 and it recognises the connection and says 'connected' and 'excellent signal strength' but I can't open any webpages, etc. I tried changing it to obtain an IP address automatically but it says 'Limited or no connectivity'.

Any idea why this is happening and what I can do to fix the problem? It's driving me insane...

Evening all. Been looking through this forum a bit over the last few hours as there seem to be rather knowledgeable folk around here.

I'm running 2 Laptops, a Notebook running Vista Home Premium (\\moonjuice, the host, with USB Modem for Internet connectivity), and a Netbook (\\epic, super-mini-laptop) running Win XP Professional. The Notebook is on 24/7 connected to the net, and for the last 3 or so months I've been using ICS through wireless ad hoc so the Netbook could also use the net while I roamed around the house.

Last week I had a bit of an issue with my Notebook (involved nuking TrustedInstaller during the attempted installation of Critical Windows Updates) which ended up with me using System Restore to rollback the Notebook to the previous Monday before the Windows Updates were performed (August 16th). I haven't touched any of the network settings since I got them working a couple of months ago, but the Netbook just doesn't want to use ICS anymore.

I'll try to fill in as much information here so we can sort this problem out ASAP:
Internet is provided by a USB Modem connected to the Notebook (Vista). It's set to Private Network, and has ICS enabled. The LAN adapter is disabled so it should automatically use WAN for ICS. The Wireless ad hoc network is also set to Private Network.
Both the Notebook and Netbook are using manual settings for IP. (see attached images ipv4_vista.png and ipv4_winxp.png). I tried using auto for the Netbook b... Read more

HI,

I have dictionary called the Unified Medical dictionary English-Arabic

anyway, i have the ISO file
i installed it on Win7 x32 with no problem

but i tried to install it on Winx64 but it says an error like "the setup file is not compatible with Win7 x64"

I tried to search for the x64 version but i had no success, google sometimes becomes lame u know....
I tried to just copy the already installed dictionary folders to Win7x64 but it didnt open cuz it seems that it needs to be installed

So is there any way to like edit that setup.exe file or something to work on x64 version cuz it seems if i can just bypass that step it will work

or like a work around the "copy whole folders" and get it to work
I really need some help with it,
thanks in advance,
Elsayed,

Answer:Is there a work around if Win7 x32 setup file wont work on Win7 x64

sometimes 32 bit applications have 16 bit installer and that won 't work on 64 bit system, but if this is not the case did you try to run installer in compatibility mode? (right click/properties/compatibility). Installer generally does three things: creates program directory, copies some DLL files to system directory and writes some data into registry. You could trace those things in Win32 installation and try manually recreate this on 64bit machine, but who knows if it will work. Also search for portable version, those don't require installation and frankly now a days I don't use anything else but portable applications unless there is no other way.

i recently rebuilt this into a new case and it had been working fine. Mainly using the win 7 os but more recently using the win 10 os more and more. The way it has been working is that win7 is the default boot and I have to hit the delete key on startup to select win10 to boot from.

today I was on win 10 but needed to reboot to 7. Upon doing so I hit this message:

Secure Boot Violation The system found unauthorized changes on the firmware, operating system or UEFI drivers.

It then gave me the option to boot to win10 as it is the next boot option on the list. Win 10 is now giving me the blue screen "memory management error" although I have been able to get into win10 after some more rebooting.

I ran SFC scanner and it told me that there were some problems that it cannot fix.

Everything is unplugged apart from mouse, keyboard hdmi to screen and ethernet cable. Unplugging the win10 drive from the mobo and switching the win7 drive to another port has not helped.

Has my ssd failed? has win 10 done an update that has caused this problem? It did update today, in fact the first error message I got was after win10 shut down, and when I booted into it again it installed some updates before launching.
thanks for any help!

Answer:dual boot win7/win10 wont boot to win7 anymore +BSOD "memory managemen

Hi @vinvanda.

As far as I can understand from your post that you had W7 and W10 as dual boot in two different disks.

From the uploaded data we could not find a hint of the BSOD that you said (it is not recorded anywhere, probably because it happened during boot); but some other statements are supported by the data.

Windows failed fast startup with error status 0xC00000D4.

Now, it is STATUS_NOT_SAME_DEVICE; reads as .... "The destination file of a rename request is located on a different device than the source of the rename request".

Now I am making a guess. It it is wrong, please rectify and state the proper situation.
You name the Windows 7 Disk as "system" and the Windows 10 disk as "Win 10". You also said that windows 7 is the default boot. So I am guessing that the boot files are in the the windows 7 disk.

The board is set as Legacy BIOS. So Fast Boot is not possible here; and if Fast Startup is enabled, windows7 needs to disk check in every startup. It is desirable to keep fast startup disabled on a computer with W7.

Now Coming to the "Secure Boot Violation". Windows 7 does not support it at all. And, it is the Firmware Validation Process of UEFI; whereas your system is set to Legacy. I think here lies the issue.

BIOS Mode Legacy

Hi,

it is possible to totally disable or enable Win10 Family under Win10 Family, see for instance How to blacklist or whitelist a program in Windows 10

I want to enabled Windows Script Host ONLY for a set of (personal) scripts, aka white list a few scripts, all others are by default blacklisted=disabled.

How to do that under Win10 Family??

Thanks

Hello, I need help with my Windows 10 PC not creating memory.dmp files upon BSOD. The attached debug files are likely referencing the last BSOD for which a minidump or memory.dmp was created. Since then I have had 2 more BSOD's, each time forgetting to write down the error code on the actual Blue Screen, and no record of the crash appears in the Event Viewer, just that the computer was not cleanly shut down. I ran a program call "WhoCrashed" which only found the minidump from 9-24, and identified Dell Sonicwall Global VPN Client as the likely culprit.

Here are the details of that report:

Hi ComponentActual,

Minidump - Configure to create in Windows 10

Please try following:
Open an admin command promptCopy/paste "sfc/scannow" (without quotes) and press enterWhen it finished reboot your systemOpen again an admin command promptEnter sfc/scannow again
If sfc/scannow does NOT say "Windows Resource Protection did not find any integrity violation" after the second SFC, please upload the cbs.log file located at {windows partition}\Windows\Logs\CBS\, if the file is too large try a 3rd party uploader like dropbox, onedrive, google drive, mediafire etc.
System File Check(SFC a.k.a. Windows Resource Protection) needs to have your system rebooted in order for sfc to try to fix the problems that it finds.

Greetings! I'm currently working on reinstalling win on my cousin's y580 with following specs:Intel(R) Core(TM) i3-3110M CPU @ 2.40GHz8GB RAMGEFORCE GTX 660M Everything went smoothly until the part where I want to install USB 3.0 drivers (responsible for 2x3.0 USB and 2.0 USB port). I tried everything from installing win7 drivers, uninstalling and reinstalling them with Windows Update to forcing INTEL drivers intalation. So far no luck. Browsing the forum I happened to find the topic: https://forums.lenovo.com/t5/Lenovo-P-Y-and-Z-series/USB-3-0-Ports-Not-Working-Y580/m-p/3457050#M149... , where the guy assumes that motherboard is broken cause he bought it with "broken USB ports". That is not the case, ports were working just fine on win8 until the moment win10 was introduced. In the device manager the driver shows the error 10. I also came for advice to my friend using the same notebook with better specs(i7) and they are working fine for him. So my question finally is: have anyone solved this problem for the given spec already and/or is it the case of the 64bit system(not fully supported with those specs)? I am frankly out of ideas rn. Cheers, Hubert

I have a windows network. 4 Computers are Win98SE #1, Win98SE #2, XPsr2 #1 and XP sr2#2. I have USB printers attached to 98SE #1 and XPsr2 #1. Printers are shared. System in place for approx. 2yrs and has worked fine. About 3 weeks ago XPsr2 #1 had difficulty accessing the printer on Win98Se #1. Access became very slow. No other computers were affected and all file sharing btwn all computers worked fine. On XP 1, I removed and reinstalled the 98se1 printer many times with no luck. I completely uninstalled the USB printer on Win #1, removed all drivers and then did a new install. I opened it as a share. All the other computers found it and added it to their printers. Xp#1 "sees it" but when I try to access it the XP#1 computer freezes, even by trying to print a blank page from wordpad/notepad. I hooked an old parallel HP111p to Win #1. XP1 sees it but accesses it very slowly. XP1 prints fine to the printer attached to it. I have scanned for virus/worms etc with latest edition of Symantec. The whole system is behind a Linksys firewall. I plugged my network cable into different ports.
What I do know is that:
system used to work,
printer is freely accessible to the other computers,
regular file sharing btwn all computers works fine,
my other XP computer is virtually identical to XP1 and it accessess the printer fine,
the printer works fine from instructions from its own computer,
I have not added any software to either of the affected computers.

What will not happen is... Read more

I'm just kind of wondering whether I should just buy more RAM, which would probably entail a complete overhaul or upgrade to Win10?

Answer:Which uses less RAM? Win7 or Win10?

actually ... you want your OS to use as much ram as possible .. idle ram is wasted ram... we're not talking about WinXP anymore

..that being said, they have the same hardware requirements .. a little less hard drive space is needed for windows 10 though for a 64bit install. 12Gb is plenty for your setup ..

Question: Win10 to Win7

I recently purchased a notebook with Win 10 installed and would like to install Win 7. Would it be possible? If so, would there be a problem with the BIOS. Legacy Support & UEFI ? If the BIOS did present a problem, could a BIOS conducive to Win 7 be loaded? Thanks.

Answer:Can I go from Win7 32 to Win10 64?

You'd have to do a clean install using your Windows 7 key. I don't think it's tied to architecture, as long as it's an equivalent version, Windows 7 Home to Windows 10 Core, Windows 7 Pro to Windows 10 Pro, you should be ok.

I am trying to figure out the best alternative, that has similar functionality to Outlook, and would suggest a popular client so that support is available.

I was considering Thunderbird, as I have used Firefox for the last few years.

Does it have Calendar and Contacts similar to Outlook?
Can it be synched with Gmail?

What is the best way to get mails from pst on old pc to new client in new pc???

I have seen this:
1. Install Thunderbird on old pc, and transfer data
2. Then copy the entire Thunderbird folder on your old PC from: < path >\Application Data\Thunderbird folder
3. Install Thunderbird on the new PC and elect to NOT migrate any data
4. Create a new Profile, and elect to use "Default User" as the Profile Name
5. Start Thunderbird, but exit when the Mail Wizard comes up
6. Next, with Thunderbird closed: Navigate to the < path >\Application Data\Thunderbird folder Delete the Thunderbird folder

8. Start Thunderbird, and your Mail and all data will be in place.

I don't use Outlook or Thunderbird, but a quick search turned up an Add-On called Lightning which is a calendar for Thunderbird based on the Sunbird calendar. There is also something called GCALdaemon which can sync Google Calendar with Sunbird/Lightning. I haven't researched the Contacts end of this, but a quick Google should reveal all that's needed to know.... I'll do some quick searches for ya and post anything of interest....

XP1 uses static local ip while XP2 and win7 use dynamic local ip.

on xp2 and win7, i could not see XP1's hostname on neither xp2's my network place, nor win7's network. However, i could access xp1 over using its static IP.

does anyone know what xp1's hostname is not shown on the other two's network places? is that because of xp1 is using local static ip? Thank you very much

A while ago I installed Win7 games on Win10 using msgames_win8_x64.msi as mentioned in thread Hearts and Solitaire Games in Windows 10 - Windows 10 Forums I wondered if this was legal but did it anyway. Installing the TH2 update removed the games. I installed them again, but this is starting to bother my conscience. Does Microsoft consider these games "pirated" or "unauthorized"? If not, why did the maintenance delete them?

Answer:Win7 games on Win10

This is simply to do with the way the TH2 update is implemented. It's virtually a new Windows installation, and creates a Windows.old folder. Because your games are presumably installed within folders which are part of the OS, I would expect they have been left behind in the Windows.old folder and not copied across.

As a side note, it has been found that some user installed programs (just a very few) have been uninstalled by the update, where MS has deemed these are incompatible.

Just reinstall them if you wish.

I had been backing up my Win10 system with the above to an external USB3 drive which I don't power power up all the time. All of a sudden File History and WinBackup (using the allowed control panel Win7 backup and restore) stopped functioning because the "external drive had not been used in a long time". I corrected File History by changing the parameters as MS advised but the backup function no longer works. Is this fixable? My PC is an HP i5, 8G, 256 SSD, running Win10 Pro 64. Acronis backed up fine to "My Backups" on the external drive, but I would like to continue with the Win7 program.

Personally, I only care about the data (pics, music, docs, etc...).  In more than 30 years of moving from old computers to new computers I have never bothered with trying to transfer settings, profiles or installed software.  I like to start out fresh with a new computer with a fresh install of the OS and software.  Others may feel differently but that's the way I've always done it.

My X3960 is approved by a Microsoft systems check for upgrade from Win7 to Win10. However, I get an error message (C1900101-20017) that apparently refers to a bug in the boot process. After browsing around, it seems I should "enable UEFI" during booting, alternatively "enable booting from file". Neither of these alternatives exist in my BIOS version (v. 2.10.1207). A BIOS upgrade (P01.B0) is on offer from ACER, with dire warnings should I do it 'incorrectly'. Somewhere else in the ACER pages, I'm informed that my PC is not on the list of those the ACER approves for upgrading to Win10. The company's info pages are not helpful, and they don't seem to accept email inquiries. So: Should I or shouldn't I upgrade the BIOS?

Answer:Upgrading from Win7 to Win10

check your BIOS version prior to upgrade. press DEL at boot and check on main BIOS screen the actual version. i'm quite sure your PC doesn't have an UEFI option on BIOS.

A LAN has two win7pro pcs, a new win10Home laptop (replacing an older machine) and other laptops. The two win7pro pcs and the new win10 laptop form a development system for database/app/webapp software, and must be able to create & write files to most any folder on any of the three machines, anytime.
Essentially, we must be able to treat these three machines as if they were just one machine with several drives run by multiple instances of an admin user. That's how we work.
I can hear the corporate intakes of breath. For this request, lose that mindset: we're a family, not a corporation.
When the win10 laptop was configured and introduced to the network a few weeks ago, we managed to persuade it---against its corporate wishes---to allow such access without authentication requests.
Now, the win10 instance has updated itself, and since then, both win7 pcs encounter username & password requests on attempting to access the win10 laptop's drive c:. That stops us cold.
Worse, when the username & password are entered, we meet a further Orwellian requirement for a password for the drive on win7 machine from which the request was made!
How do we defeat these ludicrous requirements?

Answer:access to win10 pc from win7 pcs on lan

You might think Microsoft would respect user settings. No such luck.

In the new win10 laptop I'd turned off password protected sharing in "Network and Select Properties". The Windows 10 update turned it back on!

So to fix this:

Right click on Network and select Properties.
Click on Change advanced sharing settings at left.
Click the down arrow next to All Networks at the bottom.
Select Turn off password protected sharing.
Click the Save changes button.

Thank you Microsoft. Not.

So the primary issue is this: My motherboard is old enough that there are no windows 10 drivers for it.

I did get everything running smoothly at one point, but have no clue how, and now it honestly seems easier to downgrade to 7, where drivers exist and so on.

How do I do this? Primarily, how do I do it without losing all my data?

Answer:Going from win10 to win7 - how, precisely

As far as I know, you can only do a clean install of 7.

You'd have to copy your data to a non-OS drive. (That could be another partition on the same physical drive, although you'd have to be careful to not lose it.) Installed programs and settings would be lost.

Worth it?

I want to move from MBR Win7 to GPT Win10. With the USB, do I need to "boot with EFI" from inside BIOS? or can I boot normally but then configure as GPT install per above?

Edit: Also, does the BIOS need to be changed or does it figure it out MBR vs GPT? (I have an older BIOS which is supposed to support GPT but I know does not support protected)

Answer:I want to move from MBR Win7 to GPT Win10

You might have to look around in the BIOS for an option to enable UEFI boot mode. Look under the Boot tab because it's usually there. If the motherboard supports it, I don't see any reason why it would not be enabled by default.

OK , so i have installed Win7 on a low-end laptop , and since many many people claimed that Win10 is crappy compared to Win7 ; let me compared Win7 to Win10 ... i will even use Win7 Ultimate vs Win10 Home

this will be a real-time comparison made like Average Joe would.

please don't mention about privacy , it is not the purpose here.

Installation (Win10 win)

both OS are in the latest ISO from USB using Rufus

Win7 : the installation was properly made, nothing special there
Win10: same as Win7, did customized setting , etc...

Then there the first expected fail of Win7 ; it doesn't have the proper drivers for my machine; which was released during the Win8 era. So basically i ended up with no network, so i can't have Windows Updates...
I was expected it so i have them downloaded prior to the installation, but Average Joe won't think of it and if he doesn't have another PC under hands, he is done...

Post Installation (no winner)

Win7: user account creation is classic , nothing to complain here.
Win10: MS push you to use a MS account for various purposes, but a local account is permitted ; so here nothing to complain too.

Windows Updates (Win10 win)

when i install an OS , the first thing i do is Windows Update to get latest compatible drivers and security fixes.

I am not sure if I have expansion slots or room for more RAM.

We use the cpu for basic home usage plus some streaming (netflix, etc.) and home-office applications...not too much gaming but I would like to have that option in the future. As you can see I have partitioned the HDD into separate drives for organizing purposes (as a result of someone's advice). I don't want to break the bank for this upgrade if at all possible. Thanks in advance for your help...
