Preferred Solution: Double COM SURROGATE in task manager

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

These multiple DLLhost.exe entries in Windows Task Manager keep multiplying and multiplying. Any games or programs I use in full screen mode get minimized. I never had an issue until I started noticing this when checking task manager. I checked another laptop and a desktop and they show no such surrogate entries. Even as I'm typing here, the cursor will stop blinking as if another program is loading in the background. Microsoft Security Essentials and Malawarebytes Premium have not been able to get rid of this.

I appreciate your help and expertise. Thank you.

Hello, I've had several warnings by Norton Security Suite within the past week or two that a trojan has been blocked. However, after the latest trojan block, I soon after received a warning from Norton that COM SURROGATE was using a lot of memory. Upon checking task manager, I counted at least (10) dllhost.exe (com surrogate) in the list. I did a system restore to several days before. So far I haven't noticed any ill effects, but ask for help to determine if I am indeed trouble free. Thank you in advance!

I have had TwinHeadedEagle help this last week at this link: http://malwaretips.com/threads/fake...dont-even-have-google-chrome-installed.35660/

It worked to remove fake google chrome malware, but now I have in the task manager under processes tab, many "dllhost.exe.*32" with description "COM Surrogate" that is basically doing the same thing as the other one. I try and end their process, but they just keep coming back. I tried to download the zoek.exe, and even after I disabled my antivirus, it said my security settings wouldn't allow the download, so I can't run the scan!

Help! Attached is what it looks like in my task manager and also, what it looks like in volume mixer.

Answer:FAKE COM Surrogate in task manager (dllhost.exe*32)

Hello,

Scan with Farbar Recovery Scan Tool

Please download Farbar Recovery Scan Tool and save it to your desktop.

Note: You need to run the version compatibale with your system. If you are not sure which version applies to your system download both of them and try to run them.
Only one of them will run on your system, that will be the right version.
Double-click to run it. When the tool opens click Yes to disclaimer.
Press Scan button.
It will make a log (FRST.txt) in the same directory the tool is run. Please attach it to your reply.
The first time the tool is run, it makes also another log (Addition.txt). Please attach it to your reply.

Hi there,
I'm fixing a computer for a local business and they said it has been running extremely slow recently. Scanned it over, removed the typical trojans/viruses but it was still running slow. Looked in task manager and found multiple instances of dllhost.exe *32 running. They each took a lot of CPU and memory up. Once I end one of the processes another one starts up. All antivirus is up to date and everything has been scanned but nothing is picking it up. What could it be?

I have been able to rightclick - end process all of them for a little bit. I monitored the processes and they were fine for about 10 minutes then all 20 instances of the dllhost.exe*32 popped up again and starting rising in memory and cpu it took up.

And yes I have tried multiple solutions to try and fix this so you will see weird programs in the log.
Thanks in advance

Using window 8. I'm just an average user with average knowledge w/ computers. There were 2, now 3, COM Surrogate Processes running in my Task Manager, they disappear after around 3 secs. I tried to delete them at this time, but restarting Task Manager will spawn them again and then disappear. When I right click any of them, they lead to Windows System32 Folder, file is dllhost.

Hello, I've seen a few topics relating to my problem but wasn't sure if the steps are exactly the same for each person or if they are customized from problem to problem.

I'm running windows 7 and as other users have stated, my computer was running slowly, freezing up periodically and minimizing programs I was using. I checked task manager and at that time I saw many dllhost with description COM surrogate running, and trying to end the processes they just kept appearing again. At that time I had AVG as my antivirus and malwarebytes. Only AVG detected the file but it could not delete it. I then uninstalled AVG and changed my antivirus to Bitdefender and that seemed to have stifled the symptoms although I don't believe it ever fixed the problem. My computer was running smoothly for about a week and now I have a filename uirrvmzweu.exe with description google chrome. My computer symptoms are about the same as they were when the dllhost process was running. They both act very similar as far as I can see.

Any help would be much appreciated, thank you.

Kids have been using the home PC for homework & we believe we caught a bad webpage (opened multiple times with showing any text). Since that time, multiple dllhost.exe *32 Processes open upon using the PC, causing to be VERY slow & eventually not work at all. Have made various attempts to find the virus to no avail, including a full McAfee scan. Downloaded FRST64.EXE to a USB drive on another PC (wouldn't let me download on the home PC because it said I didn't have administrator rights!!!). Used the USB drive copy to run the scan on the home PC. Attached are needed files. Please help us correct this issue!!

I noticed that internet explorer freezes a lot and also that I have often 2 ieplorer.exe in task manager. I installed firefox and after 5 minutes it started to freeze too.
This smells the malware big time so I scanned my PC with Avast (when windows start) and spybot: search and destroy (safe mode). Avast did find few things but the issue remains the same.

I believe I need help.

I used FRST, files attached.

Hello, this morning I was checking all the things on my computer just to clean up and I found two "COM Surrogate" processes running. I googled it and another name for it is, dllhost.exe 32 or something of the sort, I'm sure you may already know. I've scanned with Malwarebytes twice now, one regular scan, and now a scan with the rootkit search part enabled.

Please help, thanks!!

Computer is running slow and won't load Task Manager (noticed that CPU usage suddenly goes to 100% if I try to open Task Manager, however, it never loads). Likewise for Chrome, and many other antivirus/malware software. They all work once I get into Safe Mode, however, they find nothing. The anti-rootkit programs all complain about a driver not loading- possible rootkit infection (or cause I'm in Safe Mode)?

I have attached a screenshot of my CPU usage in programs and usage monitors below. I am extremely fed up at this point so hopefully this post will make sense

The problem
I have noticed my CPU usage in task manager is always 100% and the boost is always around the maximum. Thats a Core i7 6800k at 3.4Ghz and 3.6Ghz boost.

However, other monitoring apps show the CPU not to be at 100% load. Core temp and rainmeter (screenshot doesnt show Rainmeter) both show more normal looking usage and the temps look fine and not those of a really stressed CPU. Im using the stock cooler that came with the CPU.

This PC is used for audio production and in Studio One the CPU meter flashes up and down like mad while in Ableton Live its only at 2%.

Things Ive done so far
Entered BIOS and disabled CPU power saving features. Speedstep, C-States and the like.
Watched Task Manager for a while and noticed that an open program will use a high amount of CPU and when that prgram is closed another one will take its place with high CPU usage, when that one is closed another one will take its place.
Ive also ran a virus scan and Malwarebytes and they found nothing.
Ive tried the other utilities mentioned but they show completely different figures.
Changed processor sheduling from Programs to Background services and back.

Screenshot
CPU usage - Album on Imgur

Really hope someone can help with this, its driving me crazy. Thanks

Answer:CPU 100% load and Boost in task manager but only task manager

Just to add something else. Ive just noticed in task manager the processes tabd and the details tab show two completely different things. On the details tab the CPU usage all on the system idle process which I think is what it should be doing. On the processes tab I have programs with high cpu usage.

Many of us know that when you open Task Manager and from File > you click on New Task (Run), the RUN windows opens. Some of us also know that when you press CTRL and click on New Task (Run), the command prompt windows opens. But do you know WHY?
A few years back, Adam had asked: Why does holding control when clicking New Task in Task Manager launch a command prompt? This appears to have been added in Windows XP?
Just a short while back, MSDN explained it as follows: It's a rogue feature!

Windows XP introduced visual styles, and one of the tricky parts of debugging visual styles is that if the visual style engine goes berzerk, you can't see anything! One of the problems that the visual styles folks encountered when developing their feature was that sometimes they would get into a state where the Run dialog would stop working. And without a Run dialog, you couldn't install or launch a debugger to begin investigating what went wrong.
The solution: Add the rogue feature where holding the Ctrl key when selecting New Task from Task Manager opened a command prompt directly, without involving the Run dialog. From that command prompt, you can then install the debugger and start debugging.
Over time, the bugs in the visual style system got worked out, and this rogue escape hatch was no longer needed, but for whatever reason, it never got removed.

Thanks to our reader "Sayli" for sharing it...

Answer:Holding CTRL key and clicking New Task from Task Manager opens a command prompt. WHY?

Wow - thats a great find! Never knew that you could open a CMD prompt from the Task Manager.

My son downloaded a picture send by his sister of his nephew for a background and ever since then he has no desktop icons, start button, or taskbar. Although the picture is still present on the screen. When I hit Ctrl, Alt, Delete to bring up task manager the new task option is greyed out. I have started it up tapping on the F8 key and selected to restore it to a previously working state and received the Active Desktop Recovery along with an error message: The application or DLL C:\intuser.dll is not a valid windows image and rundll 32.exe bad image. The cursor then becomes and hourglass and freezes the screen. I had to hold the button down for abut 5 seconds to et it to shut down. When I allow it to start up not tapping F8 I receive an error report that says spyware terminator realtime shield has encountered a problem and will shut down. If I click to see the report it says szAppName:Viewpointservice.exe szAppVer: 2.0.0.54 szModName:viewpointservice.exe 2.0.0.54 offset:00002250 I am running Windows xp proffesional. Hi there... are you able to follow thru any of the below working in safe mode?

Welcome to Major Geeks!

Please read ALL of this message including the notes before doing anything.

Pleases follow the instructions in the below link:

READ & RUN ME FIRST. Malware Removal Guide

and attach the requested logs when you finish these instructions.

**** If something does not run, write down the info to explain to us later but keep on going. ****
Do not assume that because one step does not work that they all will not. MGtools will frequently run even when all other tools will not.

After completing the READ & RUN ME and attaching your logs, make sure that you tell us what problems still remain ( if any still do )!
Helpful Notes:

If you run into problems trying to run the READ & RUN ME or any of the scans in normal boot mode, you can run the steps in safe boot mode but make sure you tell us what you did later when you post logs. See the below if you do not know how to boot in safe mode:

Starting your computer in Safe mode

If you have problems downloading on the problem PC, download the tools and the manual updates for SUPERAntiSpyware and Malwarebytes ( links are given in the READ & RUN ME) onto another PC and then burn to a CD. Then copy them to the problem PC. You will have to skip getting updates if (and only if) your internet connection does not work. Okay so this problem happened slowly.

First I just recently got internet the day this happened.

Then my computer starts slowing down.

Then applications are not running, saying (null) and that they are not win32 compatible programs.

Then I can't access the task manager, it says it's been disabled by the administrator (Which is ********).

Then my logon screen changes to just a black screen with a plain prompt style logon screen.

Then when I log in it's just my desk top background with no icons or task bar, and I can't do anything, and most times it just immediately logs back off.

It does the same thing in safe mode. I can't do system recovery.

As soon as I logged in I smashed a bunch of keys and got the task manager to pop up and I've been running things through that. I downloaded HJT and have a log here.

This is very urgent, as I have some pretty pricey software on here. I'm a graphic design student with alot of homework and I'm really stressed out right now and would love to get this problem resolved.

Here is my log, please help me out:

Answer:Dektop shows up with no icons or task bar. Running things through Task manager.

I don't mean to bump this, I just would like to point out that i was only able to complete Step 1.

I removed all of those programs that I found, I had to use appwiz.cpl in task manager.

The other steps I couldn't perform because I can't use IE. My system also noted the files as corrupt or not compatible with Win 32.

And I need to use IE to do the online PC scan thing as well.

I'm really sorry, I hope I can still get some help.

Every now and then I look down at the task tray ...and whoa!!!! about a dozen instances of Outlook. See attached

What is causing this?

And how do I prevent it??

Answer:Mutliple Outlook 2003 instance in task tray and task manager

It just looks as though you have multiple instances of Outlook open. Probably the way you are accessing your mail each time you open a new email.

It's likely that Outlook is set to 'hide when minimised' on the task button.

Hello.

The attached logs are locked, meaning a password were set on them and therefore I cannot view it.

Anyhow, please run the following tool.

Install Recovery Console and Run ComboFix

Download Combofix from any of the links below, and save it to your desktop.

Link 1
Link 2
Link 3
Close/disable all anti-virus and anti-malware programs so they do not interfere with the running of ComboFix. Refer to this page if you are not sure how.
Close any open windows, including this one.
Double click on ComboFix.exe & follow the prompts.
As part of it's process, ComboFix will check to see if the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is installed. With malware infections being as they are today, it's strongly recommended to have this pre-installed on your machine before doing any malware removal. It will allow you to boot up into a special recovery/repair mode that will allow us to more easily help you should your computer have a problem after an attempted removal of malware.
If you did not have it installed, you will see the prompt below. Choose YES.

Follow the prompts to allow ComboFix to download and install the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console, and when prompted, agree to the End-User License Agreement to install the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console.
**Please note: If the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is already installed, ComboFix will continue it's malware removal procedures.

I have a machine whose disk is nearly always running at 99-100% usage (according to Task Manager) even though no individual tasks appear to be responsible. For instance there might be three tasks running at 0.1MB/s and the rest at 0MB/s, but the disk (a 7200GB 3.5 inch one) is still at its limit and the responsiveness of my desktop is still very poor. Does anyone have an explanation for this and (hopefully) a solution?

Answer:Very high disk usage not attributed to any task in Task Manager

Hi, try Process Explorer (free) - easy to find- which gives a more comprehensive view.

Also make sure the actual data transfer rate is appropriate. Some hardware issues can give rise to very low transfer rates which may cause this sort of problem.

You can test the disk if, for example, you boot from a bootable medium rather than Windows in your case as you have this problem presently, such as Kyhi's bootable DVD/flash drive available from the top of the Software and Apps section here.

Also try using the Resource Monitor (link at the bottom of the task manager/performance tab)

Hello

Hello all, im hoping that im able to get an answer for this as its been driving me crazy and I cant seem to find an answer anywhere online. On Saturday my PC was turn on, and once logged into Windows Ive found that all that happens is my windows loads into a blank wallpaper that I have. I have no icons, no task bar and I am unable to bringup the task manager (ctrl-alt-del doesnt work).

After leaving for a full hour, it still hadnt loaded and still unable to acess task manager. I tried a load into the last good config and it still loaded into the above. Ive tried loading into Safemode and safemode /w netowrking and its the same story. The only place I have any acess is Safemode /w an active command prompt, although there isnt any icons or taskmanager.

The last resort is to try a repair via the XP CD which i still have, but before i risk messing anything up, id ideally try to fix my PC. Is there any ideas on whats happened? Its Windows XP with Service Pack3. I dont recall installing any updates but I do have it on auto-install anyway. All help is gratefully welcomed!

Answer:Loading into blank wallpaper. No task bar / icons/ Task Manager

At the blank desktop press CTRL+ALT+DEL start the Task Manager. Go up to File/New Task (Run) in the Run box type explorer.exe and press enter. If that doesn't work at the Run box or the command prompt type %systemroot%\system32\restore\rstrui.exe and do a System Restore to a time before this happened.

As my machine doesn't support SLAT in HyperV I am using VMlite XP mode to run some 16 bit programs I need. Very occaisionally VMlite hangs on close after it has saved state or shutdown the guest machine.

I go to task manager and click end task on the Workstation GUI and it closes but very occaisionally end task wont closed the program. Sign off wont close the program either and restarting hangs at the blue screen 'restarting' I have to push the reset button on the tower to get the machine to restart.

Is there any hidden way of closing VMlite so I dont have to restart, a sort of hard end task?

Tim

Answer:Unable to end task in task manager Win8.1 x64 and VMlite.

Hi there
I believe vmlite XP mode is non Ms official software - XPmode is licensed and distributed solely by Ms. Anybody else who incorporates this product into their offerings whether freeware or not runs the risk of serious copyright infringements.

For 16 bit software you could try using a win95 VM - works fine !!!(use FREE VBOX or VMWARE player to create the VM).
I'm not sure but a W98 VM might work too -- there's a generic key on the web and plenty of ISO's --this is now abandonware so the generic keys are legit.

Recently I've had an issue where for no reason my task bar wont respond and the task manager wont open, both times I had to force a shutdown and reboot.

The first time I was watching a movie, after the movie I hit pause and went to open Firefox through a shortcut on the task bar and got nothing, this computer can be slow at times as its age is catching up with itself so I thought to just wait a few seconds and try again, still nothing. Then I went back to the media player and noticed the media player was fully responding and had no issue, using Alt+Tab I could switch to other programs or folders and they worked fine but the task bar was completely locked. I tried Ctrl Alt Delete to try ending the explorer process then starting it up again as I figured that might help but after waiting for a couple minutes it never came up! I hit the keys again and still nothing waiting and trying over and over nothing came up so I ended up having to force a shutdown and cold boot.

The 2nd time it happened I literally had no programs running except Comodo and the computer had been left alone for about an hour, when I returned the task bar was again locked up and the task manager would not show. Thanks for reading all this and any help on the subject is much appreciated!

Windows Task Manager is absolutely useless at end tasking a prog that says Not Responding, one selects the prog, clicks end task and End Now then nothing happens, drives me nuts.

I want that prog to die, there and then !, I get caught in a loop of end now select prog again, end task, end now, select prog again....etc .

What is there that will nuke that prog ?

Answer:Far more efective END TASK wanted to Msoft task manager..what to use ?

Hey DBenz, when that happens to me, I just go to Task Manager-Processes and right click on the programs exe process (example: Ccleaner.exe) and click End Process.

I've added task manager to my scheduled tasks at logon. Everywhere I google, they say to put the /min or -minimized arguments in it to launch it minimized, except neither option works for me. Task Manager launches, but just sits there on my desktop.

Is there a new argument for minimized in Windows 8?

Thanks!

Answer:Launch Task Manager Minimized from Task Scheduler

I probably should have started a new thread for this, but the title of this one was perfect, so I decided to borrow it for my post instead of confusing people with multiple threads on the same topic.

First, to answer the question posed by the original poster, in case he or anyone still cares: "Minimized" isn't a parameter for the Task Manager itself - and never was; this isn't one of the changes that came with Windows 8. Rather, the old way (which still works for most programs) was to create a create a shortcut to the program you want to start minimized, and then to choose "Minimized" in the shortcut's settings, as shown in this example:

Placing a shortcut to Task Manager in the Startup folder no longer works the way it used to, but the reason has nothing to do with this; rather, with Windows 8, the new Task Manager must run with elevated privileges (in order to have access to all the new information it's capable of displaying), and Windows 8 doesn't allow that to happen for shortcuts in the Startup folder. (I don't think that older versions of Windows allowed that, either, but the old Task Manager didn't care; the new Task Manager will refuse to run without it.)

Anyway, on to the main reason for this message:
   Information
This post will show you how to set up Windows 8 to start Task Manager automatically on every logon, providing almost the same functionality as was provided by the old shortcut method. (There are still some unres... Read more

Howdy All,

Task Manager won't come up with ctrl+alt+delete or from right click task bar? When I right click the task bar I can see the "task manager" option and can click it, but nothing happens.

For months I've been having problems with programs not responding, responding slowly, or freezing. When I open Windows Task Manager and select end task, it doesn't work. I want to run scans in safe mode, but when I press F8 on restart, I can't get it. I could previously get to safe mode before all the problems started. The only way I can get out of a program not responding or freezing is to hit the off button, not through shut down/restart. I'm having to do this constantly now. I suspect the computer has a virus or problems with spyware/malware. Bitdefender quarantines lots of temp files, which I delete. Hitman Pro finds tracking cookies, which I delete. Malwarebytes never finds anything. I need help in determining what problem my computer has and how I can fix it.

So I was using my computer yesterday and it was completely fine. I turned it on today to find that all my files on my desktop were sorted by alphabetical order and the desktop was black. The next thing was a popup appeared saying that Microsoft Mouse and Keyboard Center has stopped working. The taskbar is completely empty and only shows the windows icon, date, time, volume etc. The resolution seems to be messed up and most things appear a bit blurry. Task manager does not show anything under any of its tabs and search is not working at all. Many of the windows functions are not working and it seems that data that was saved in my browsers were completely erased. If anyone has any possible solution for this I'd really appreciate it

You know how after you end a program using End Task in Task Manager, it asks you if you want to tell Microsoft about the problem? I was able on my other XP system to change an option somewhere so it doesn't ask me that any more. I just can't remember how I did it....

Anyone remember?

After the last window's update on Dec. 18th failed, my computer behaves strangely. I tried to restore the system to before the update, but now I can not open window's update. In normal mode, the window update window freezes when opened. In safe mode, window update does not even open. Also my task manager does not open in normal mode. A taskmanager icon appears on the system tray, but the task manager does not show up. Also the wireless network manager freezes when I try to access it in normal mode. The system takes longer than usual to load in normal mode. The system also frequently crashes while starting up in normal mode, only a blank screen with a mouse arrow in the middle appears. When I shut the computer down, it freezes in log out screen, so I have to manually shut it down. The defragment also will not run.
There is serveral cases of service hang report in my problem log involving Nlasvc, SstpSvc, WinHttpAutoProxySvc.
I'm sure I don't have any malware in my system left since I checked it through the virus removal/hijackthis forum as well as multiple virus scans, still the problem persist.

Answer:Can not open window's update/ task manager/ network manager and can not shut down

Hi boman,

Some questions:

You said you are sure you don't have any malware left. Did you have malware? And did you have malware when you tried to do the update which wasn't sucessful?

Do you have a cd with your computer?

Which Antivirus program are you using?

My computer had several viruses on it. I removed them, but they left some damage. All of my icons are gone. There is no taskbar. I cannot access the task manager. I cannot access anything. I have tried booting into safe mode, but I get the same thing. I have tried accessing files through the sticky keys ease of access center, but the link is not in the dialog box when I press shift 5 times. I am sure if I could run unhide.exe it would solve the problem it is just that I cannot access anything. All I have is a blank screen with a cursor.

Edit: I cannot right click. I also tried creating a usb to autorun unhide.exe, but to no avail.

Hi,We currently have a lot of thin clients that are domain joined. So i am building a sequence that  removes them from the domain, updates the Citrix receiver and making different file and registry changes.I have tested that it works when I execute the single tasks one at a time, but when gathering them in a sequence it fails. Here is the errorErrorCode: 14004062, Error Detail: Canceled by user., Error Info:  Task 00000250022222222 is kicked by Task 00000250022222222. So the task is kicked by it self? This specific task is just making registry changes. I tried setting a pause in the beginning of the task, but that doesn't help. Any ideas on how to solve this?

Answer:HP Device manager - task is kicked by task

Are you using a WOL Task in that Template Sequence? If yes it might kick out itself when the HPDM Console Settings has WOL enabled too (I attached a screenshot). If not also there could be an active Rule creating this issue? If that's not it I would suggest to open a case to verify this issue at www.hp.com/support

Hi There,

I've been trying to help my father-in-law with this problem, but its gone above my experience, so I am hoping someone here can help.

Dell Computer
Windows XP

When the computer loads, we get to the main screen, but the wall paper has changed to a screen with boxes of color that makes a maze (lol)

All icons are gone, and so is the task bar

When attempting to access to the Task Manager, using Ctrl+Alt+Delete, Task Manger comes up with an error stating "Task Manager has been disabled by your administrator",which gives you only 'ok' to click on, and then of course you're not able to work within Task Manager.

I attempting to get him to use the Run but using CTRL+R but when he hit it, all you could hear was the computer beeping and nothing appeared.

When talking to him, he says he remembers seeing a screen before this all happened that said something about a trogjan, and he thought he hit okay to get rid of it. After talking to him more today he told me there was a few different windows that he kept following along and hitting, so I assume it is the Antivirus 2008 trojan family that may have his computer hostage.

Where do we go from here?

Answer:No Task Bar/Icons - Cannot Access Task Manager

When I use Internet Explorer 11 on my Win10 x64 computer (with latest updates) after a few days (or internet sessions) I find IE is unresponsive (no new webpages will open) then I go to Task Manager and I see about 10 or 12 instances of "Internet Explorer" running with an equal number of "Internet Explorer (32 bit)" running. I then select one IE and click on "end task". I do this 10 or 12 times until all instances are gone. Then I can restart IE again and it runs fine, for a while but continues to load up on IE. I have to go into Task Manager every couple of days and clear out the IE tasks, depending on how much I use IE.

What can I do to figure out what is causing IE to not end/close fully?

Thanks

Answer:IE task does not end completely and I have to use task manager to end

There could be a lot reasons, it could be caused by an updater, security software or something else.

I would start by cleaning IE's cache and generally Windows, you can try CCleaner.

Until you figure it out, you can use this to kill all IE process at once.

Using Vista64-bit Ultimate.

Well, you know when you eventually resort to "end task" button in task manager to kill a not-responding application. This isn't that effective in my vista machine, and I have to end the process instead. And when ending a process, you don't know which window it refers to.

I wonder if this is related to vista?

While at this, can somebody be nice enough to explain vista's task manager to me?

what is the kernel memory? And if my total is 4 GB, how does it all add up? you see 2.6 GB cashed and 3 MB free??? and what is this 1.9 GB in the bar graph?

And what are these under System? I only know page file, but what 2306/8340 ? 2GB being used out of 8GB I set for page file?

Sorry if I sounded too stupid.

Thanks.

Answer:End task in task manager doesn't end anything!

I believe that End Task is just like trying to close the program normally; the OS asks the program to finish what it's doing and quit. If the program is not responding, then you should be given the opportunity to kill it, but that might take a while or not happen at all. End Process skips straight to killing the process forcibly, hence the warning message when you use it, as programs are not given time to save. If the process has irredeemably crashed then I usually just End Process to avoid having to wait.

Kernel memory is the memory used by Windows' core components (the Executive) and other low-level things such as drivers.

You have 4GB of RAM on your system, and also an approx. 4GB page file, it would seem. This means you have 4+4 = 8GB of virtual memory. 2306MB of that 8340MB is being used in total - although it says "Page File", it really means "Virtual Memory". I'm not sure why it has such a misleading name.

The 1.9GB in the bar graph is your physical memory (RAM) usage, so of that 2.25GB virtual memory, 1.9GB of it is actually in RAM - the other 350MB of so is in the page file. So, what's in the rest of the RAM? 2.6GB of cache - Vista's SuperFetch uses all the RAM that's not in use by programs to cache data that you might need soon, which means you only have 3MB free. That's fine though, as SuperFetch will drop the RAM it's using for cache if programs need it.

The numbers don't quite add up though as t... Read more

:confused My os is windows xp and I'm using a logitech cordless trackball. device manager shows two entries for logitech HID compliant mouse and ps/2 mouse. the mouse is plugged into the ps/2 port of my motherboard. so I delete the HID compliant mouse and it appears again after reboot. Also tried to delete it from safe mode but it shows up again after reboot. Anyone have any ideas on how to get rid of the duplicate entry? Thanks

Answer:Win XP double mouse entry in device manager

You don't need to remove the "duplicate" entry because it isn't a duplicate. Your Logitech trackball qualifies as two separate devices: one is a standard PS2 mouse, and the other is a Human Interface Device (which is a PC standard) or HID compliant mouse. It's normal and OK for both entries to be there and the trackball may not function normally if both entries are not listed.

Little arrow bottom left of Taskbar when open it should say more details. Click on the arrow.
You can also find device manager in control panel.

My friend needs help. When he opens network connections, it's empty. When he resfreshes it, he gets this error: "The network connections folder was unable to retrieve the list of network adapters on your machine. Please make sure that the network connection service is enabled and running." He checked it and the network connections are enabled but he still can't use them. When he opens the user account in the control panel, it's blank.

When he goes to computer management, he cannot see the properties of any thing.

He is unable to drag and drop, copy and paste, double-click files and open them, and the only thing that you can see in the taskbar are the quick launch buttons. Program buttons appear above the taskbar only if u minimize them.

We've searched around for possible causes and some point it to the pseudo-Trojan FriendGreeting but my friend is pretty sure that he doesn't have the trojan since he never opened any email and he can't seem to find it in his computer.

Please help us!

Thanks

Identical chipsets are showing up in the Device Manager, but looking at the computer page, I see that it says Core 2.  That means dual core, right?  So we'd expect to see two identical chipsets?

Hello, I'm trying to figure this out for a long time, but I failed. I decided to register here and ask.

I have Windows 7 installed and fully upgraded, everything works like a charm, but in my Device Manager I have two graphic cards displayed
ATI Mobility Radeon HD 3400 Series (working fine)
ATI Radeon HD 3200 Graphics (error starting device, code 10) - yup, looked at MS error code list, tried to update drivers, nothing helps

Device Manager screenshot: http://img10.imageshack.us/img10/3290/radeon.png

My question is - what is this second device for if it doesnt run properly, and the other question is if is it possible to combine both devices to get more power in graphics (like ATI CrossFire)? And if anyone could post a link to drivers which will be the best for this graphics I'd really appreciate it!

Thanks in advance!
Lukas

Answer:Satellite A300D-20V (PSAHCE) - Double graphic card in device manager

Hey,

As far as I know on desktop computer it?s a normal behavior because the card will be installed as primary and secondary card...
But in device manager shouldn?t be any yellow exclamation marks.

First of all you should make sure if newest display driver from official Toshiba website is installed:
http://eu.computers.toshiba-europe.com > Support & Downloads > Download Drivers

If it doesn?t work it would be interesting to know if you can notice the same (yellow exclamation mark) on preinstalled OS from Toshiba.

Hi,

I have just found a double entry for the Intel(R) 82852/82855 GM/GME graphics controller and the Plug & Play monitor in Device Manager on my Windows XP SP3 machine.

I suspect that there should only be one entry and the other thing is that the computer is very slow - checking the resources tab on the graphics driver shows both entries are using different memory resources. One entry has a full record of memory resources, IRQ, I/O range listed. The other entry has two memory resources only listed.

The question is: is it safe for me to remove one of these entries, however, since they are different can I delete both and have windows redetect and install one correct entry?

I'm assuming Windows will detect this adapter - how do I know it will as opposed to having to install it myself?

Surely the Plug and play monitor is a duplicate entry? This is a laptop and there is so second monitor in use.

Many thanks for any help

Weird problem bugging me for a while. Every email I sent became double in the receivers' inbox. When I upload photos, every file became double. The above happened since a month ago, I believe and I didn't think much about it till this morning. I bought something on ebay, and that listing has multiple quantity available. I bought 1 item, but in the end it became 2 separate transactions. Both end times are the same, even the seconds are the same. So why is this happening? Can someone help me please? Thanks.

Answer:Double emails, double uploads, double transactions

Hi Luther,

What email client or clients are you using and is it setup to connect to Exchange or POP or maybe both?

By the way we only see one post...

i enclose a screen shot of taskmanager and await your views

Answer:task manager

A lot of those processes belong to McAfee. Do a Google search for the items and you can see what they are. Everything looks as it should.

Question: Task Manager

Hi,
I have both Vista and XP on separate computers. However, when running Task Manager, I see all kinds of .exe programs that I don't recognize. How can I find out what these programs are, do I need them, and if not, how do I permanently get rid of them?

My Vista seems to have many more than my XP machine. I will sometimes "end" a process and nothing ever seems to happen.

I think I saw a website awhile back that talked about which programs you need or don't need.

Thanks,

Bill

Answer:Task Manager

Hi,
you can check all running processes on Fileinspect. Also there you can download a good free Task Manager replacement - it's a lot nicer to use and is more informative.

Hope this helps.

Question: Task Manager gone

Hi new here. having some problems with my laptop. will be grateful if you could help.

thanks so much.

Answer:Task Manager gone

Hi and Welcome

First off you have two antivirus applications in Norton and AVG installed at once, this will only cause variable problems and issues, weird errors and slowdowns in opening software and scans, please uninstall once of them.

then does your Task Manager open?

If not then follow the below to rule out malware as the cause,

Please follow our standard cleaning procedures which are necessary for us to provide you support. Also there are steps included for installing, running, and posting HijackThis logs as attachments.
Run ALL the steps in this Sticky thread READ & RUN ME FIRST Before Asking for Support
Make sure you check version numbers and get all updates.
Very Important: Make sure you tell us the results from running the tutorial...was anything found? Were you unable to complete any of the scans?...Were you unable to download any of the tools?...Did you do the on-line scans as suggested? etc.

After doing ALL of the above you still have a problem make sure you have booted to normal mode and run the steps in the below link to properly use HijackThis and attach a log:
Downloading, Installing, and Running HijackThis

Make sure you also rename HijackThis.exe as suggested in the procedures. Use analyse.exe for the new name. This is very important due to some new infections going around.

When you return to make your next post, make sure you attach the following logs and that you have run these scans in the following order too:
Counte... Read more
