I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Hi all,

I have been trying to think in depth about this question, but haven't quite worked it out.
I have a few severs, but because of electricity costs, it is mostly just one on all the time at the moment, and this has a 10/100mbps card in it. (running at 100mbps)

Most of my network traffic is from the Internet, and a bit comes from my server/client network (though, there's not many users on that.)
Would it help to have a second network card in the main/all servers?

If so, how would they be configured , as-in what their role is)
Any ideas/advise is much appreciated, Thanks.

I am wondering if it is possible to transfer money from one bank to another using paypal? There seems to be conflicting advice on the net, it was either once possible and I had to have the exact same name in both accounts, or if it has never been possible and I might well end up being charged £15+ depending on the bank if they reject the transfer. Whats the easiest way/service to use transferring money from one bank to another online? Some banks might do it from their own site but there is always a charge. I was wanting to transfer from my RBS to a family members Halifax

Answer:possible to transfer £ from banks using paypal?

A cheque? If it was possible to use PP (I don't know if it is or not), they (PP) would also charge a fee.

I recently purchased a WD Passport external Harddrive, and have attempted to use it with transferring files from a laptop running Windows 7 32-bit to a desktop running Windows 7 64-bit. Windows Easy Transfer won't allow me to do this, giving me the error msg: "Windows Easy transfer can't transfer files from a 64-bit computer to a 32-bit computer"

My question is...Is there any way around this OS conflict? (So that I can still use my external HD to transfer files between computers)

Answer:Windows Easy transfer can't transfer files from a 64-bit computer to a

If it's just document, pictures, music, etc. You could just use the drag and drop method and move them to the second computer like that.

Looks like Easy Transfer won't work for my situation.

My mobo is unstable & I'm rebuilding the system with a new mobo and proc. I want to just transfer the profiles etc. to an external HDD & reload Win 7 on same SSD after I complete the build.

However, looking through the documentation on Win 7 Easy Transfer - it looks like you have to port the data from one 'live' comp to another 'live' comp. In my case, I want to save the data from a crippled machine, then kill it and scavenge the good parts to use in the new build... not make a new machine first.

Is there any way to migrate the data & profiles 'the old fashioned' way?

Answer:Transfer user profiles from one Win 7 to another Win 7 build (Without EASY TRANSFER)

It's not a clean job, but what I've done before is transfer user's folder in C:\Users from one computer to the other. It contains documents, pictures, application settings, etc.

I have setup a shared drive so I can access my files with my Android devices but the transfer speed is very slow around 500 KB - 1.5 MB per second. My QNAP NAS that also using SMB is transfering very fast up to 12 MB/s. Can i increase transfer speed of SMB?

Answer:Increase transfer speed of windows file transfer (SMB)

Android smb shares are always slow.

I use Fast File Transfer which when in wifi direct mode gets up to 5 MB/s but have never managed to get more. This uses http protocol rather than smb.

Fast file transfer app is in google playstore and easy to use. Nothing is needed on pc side - all done from a browser.

In the end, usb tethering is quickest way.

Hi,
I bought a new laptop with Windows XP in it, I wanted to transfer some files from my Desktop PC which has Vista to my laptop with XP, I bought a Belkin USB Data Transfer Cable to transfer files with help of Windows Easy Transfer but when I installed the soft provided with it, it seemed that I can only transfer files from XP to Vista, but not the opposite. Is there a solution or must I go back to my retailer? Those unfinished Microsoft's products really annoy me.
Is there a soft which can do the same without changing the cable?
Thanks.

Answer:Transfer files from Vista to XP with Windows Easy Transfer

Did you install software on both?
Generally you will need to do so.

The simple approach if you have a router is just to make sure that the network name is same on both computers, then enable file and print sharing and make sure that the LAN and file and print sharing are not blocked by the firewalls on either machine and share the drive or folders you want and then you can see them in my network places , view workgroup computers on the other computer.

You can also do this with an ethernet crossover cable ,just connecting the ethernet cards of the two (*a crossover cable has the wires at opposite ends re arranged so the in wires on one end connect to the out on the other and vice versa)
Both windows and vista have file and settings transfer wizards and networking wizards designed to make this easier; but you can just do it all manually.

With your product did it say it was vista compatible?

I have 2 PCs, both running XP Pro SP2.
One is mine and one is my wife?s.
Both are connected to a Linksys BEFSR41 v3 router which is then connected to a cable modem.
Both can connect at high speed to the internet.
Both are on the same workgroup and have unique names.
They can see each other in the workgroup.
They can ping each other.
I can browse all shared drives in both directions from both PCs.
Everything seems to be working perfectly except if I try and transfer a file from my PC to my wife?s it takes approx 2 minutes per MB. However if I transfer a file the other way it works flawlessly and at high speed.

I have checked that all the required services are running and that there is only one master browser.

I have changed all the cables and tried different ports on the router.

NetMeter shows a maximum transfer speed of about 250kbps and the networking tab in task manager shows a network utilization of only 1%

Any advice would be gratefully received, as this is slowly driving me insane.

Answer:Slow file transfer in one direction, quick transfer the other way!

You should try data transfer using something other than WInbdows Networking. Set up some FTP server software for example. This way you can see if the problem is with the network or with Windows.

Can anyone help,
Our old PC which was running XP was getting ready for a failure but before it died I did manage to use the Files and Settings Transfer Wizard to copy the much cherished ones to my external hard drive. They are now sitting on there as a dat file. Because we didn't have the new PC yet we did not have the chance to run Vista Easy Transfer on the old PC. Does any one know how I can make this dat file become something Vista will recognise and import?

Sorry if this is in the wrong section.. I didn't really know what to put it under..

I was upgrading my system, from XP to Vista. I tried the 'keep all my current files and settings' option for the upload, but it wouldn't let me use it.
So, I used the file and settings transfer wizard to transfer all my files to my external hard drive. Then I deleated my files on my computer - no point in having two copies. (I now know how stupid this idea was).
When I had successfuly uploaded Widows vista onto my computer, I found that it didn't actualy have the files and settings transfer wizard - it had something called 'Easy Transfer' instead. Easy tranfer is incompatible with the File and settings transfer wizard.

So, now all my files are sitting on my Hard drive in .dat files, and I don't know how to get them back.

Help me please.
Thanks

Answer:File and Settings Transfer Wizard vs. Easy Transfer

you could download and install FAST to complete the transfer. i know that solves the problem when migrating from one XP /SP combination to another, perhaps it will work for an XP to Vista migration too. http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/...c9-f16c-4c52-a203-8daf944dd555&displaylang=en

What can I do?

Question: MS Money transfer

I am trying to transfer all my files from my slowing and ageing beast to a new lovely fast thing (sounds like a filly but it is a Cougar). I copied my .mny files to the new toy and installed MS Money 2003 from my original CD. When I tried to access my .mny files I was told it was not possible because the files were either not there or were write protected; they were and they were not protected. So I went on the MS site who suggested backing up the files, transferring the back ups to the new machine and restoring them. Exactly the same problem. Has anyone any ideas before I lose what little hair I have left - serves me right for establishing a new relationship.Happy Christmas.

Answer:MS Money transfer

Try using the money backup file.Don't open Money but just double click on the file. That should launch Money where you should then be able to enter your password and go.

will this also transfer the drivers needed already on the harddisc

Answer:driver transfer using Belkin transfer cable

Read the documentation. The cable is used to transfer personal files, pictures, videos etc from one system to another. It's not for transfering operating system files such as drivers, unless you have copies of the drivers in your My Documents folder? And if you're transfering all your files from one machine to another, the chances of drivers being useable are pretty slim, unless the new system is almost identical to the old? What exactly are you trying to do?

I want to transfer my account settings from one account to another in Windows 7. A lot of the settings seem to have transferred over, but not all of them, for example the autoplay settings are set to the default in the new account. I need to find a way to transfer all the settings from all control panels to the new account.

So far, the only solution I've found is using the User State Migration Tool, but I'm loathe to use something that complicated unless I have to. Does anyone know of an easier way of transferring everything?

Answer:Easy Transfer Wizard doesn't transfer everything

Hi

Sadly it doesnt transfer everything and in the main you really dont want all settings transfered as main applications need to be re-installed anyway so they will reset their defaults and as for autoplay, its disabled by default in Windows 7 as a security measure for stopping malware spreading, read more HERE

I didnt find much I missed in settings with the Easy Transfer Wizard when I did 3 PCs reciently for friends/reletives, my own main one had all user settings pretty much intact.

What apart from Autoplay is missing from your accounts? and armed with this we maybe able to advise.

I migrated to a new machine using easy transfer. I copied my files (user and data) to a hard drive that I installed in my new machine. I copied everything back and it all worked fine. Over time (the last year) I have altered my config and even wiped the OS and did a clean install. My problem is I would like to move some data files out of the Mig configuration to a useable format, but when I try to use easy transfer, it wants to bring over the user files as well to my c:. The problem with this is I have a very small c: that just has the os on it. Easy transfer wants to bring over 57 GB of user and system files that I don't want, and won't fit on the drive. The program will not allow me to choose another drive (other than c or not bring the system and user files over. It will not allow me to bring the files I want without these. I am not sure if I can recover these files (mostly pictures and music). Any help would be appreciated. Thanks.

Answer:Don't want to transfer user files with easy transfer

I should have looked a little deeper as I found the solution to my problem. For others, here is a link of a program which allows you to selectively choose which files to transfer and where to put them.

I have a Western Digital drive and it keeps freezing the transfer process around 15 seconds remaining. I am trying to transfer my movie files to it. The files are around 750 megs to 2.5 gigs each. I am trying to do them one at a time. I have got it to transfer about 3 movies to the device. When the transfer locks I have to turn off the computer and turn it back on to get it to stop. Its I think a 110 gig external.

How much RAM?
Single, Dual or Quad or high CPU.

What source are you using to transfer file to the HDD?

When you do this type of work make sure the PC doesn't go to sleep and keep an eye on it.
Make sure the HDD doesn't have any bad blocks do a check disk (CHKDSK C: /F
Make sure the HDD is de-fragmented
Make sure the HDD has done quick or full optimized (use ULTRA DEFRAG FREE)
Make sure the system is cleaned using JetClean Free

The condition of the HDD is very important also the source your transferring from too it.

I have a simple spread sheet when I list all my income and all my outgoings and balance at the bottom.
What I would like to do is add a macro so I could right click on one cell enter the amount I wish to take out, transfer it to another cell and have the balances updated automatically.
E.G.
In cell (A1) I have bank credit of £200
I want to pay a gas bill(A2) of £36
Click on the bank account enter the £36 then click on the Gas Bill click again and the money is transferred leaving totals of £164 in the bank account and 36 in the gas bill account.
How would I write one please.
Thanks for looking.

Why a macro?
I have a simple 5 column method. A B C D E
A is for the date
B is for the description
C is for Debits
D is for Credits
E is for the Running Balance
so using your figures of a credit balance of £200 and a gas bill of £36 mine would be:
Row 1, A to E has the column headings Date, Description, Debits Credits, Running Balance.
B2 Credit Balance
E2 £200
B3 Gas Bill
C3 -£36
D3 £0
E3 =SUM(E2+C3+D3)

It's sort of a weird problem, really. I have a mac with OS X connected to a vista PC through an ethernet cable. I'm able to access and copy folders with the pc, but when I do, only a small amount of the files are transferred. I'll tell it to copy a folder with several gigabytes, and it will successfully transfer like 100 mb. I need to transfer about 110 gb. I split it into a bunch of different folders, trying to do each one separately, but to no avail. No error message, or any other indication that there is a problem. It's as if vista simply ignores the majority of the files I'm trying to transfer. Any hints as to what might be happening? Thanks in advance <3

Hi Dan, you can transfer all your documents to the new PC inculding docs, pics, email ect. But not your old PC system, you will have to format the new PC install XP and programs and then transfer all your docs over to your user profile. Hi.

I have some films captured on Sony mini DV camcorder. I want to find out the best way to transfer those onto DVD format with best quality possible.

I have a sony dual layer DVD burner and currently using Pinnacle Studio 10. Unfortunately I see some lines and pauses when I make the video with that software (could be memory problem).

Can you please suggest the best capturing software and the best format and the best way to make those videos? And also is it better to capture them as AVI and then convert to any mpeg format (which I don't know which mpeg is the best!!) or is it better to capture in mpeg in straight shot.

thnx

I recently discovered my 'official' Windows XP version I have is not at all official. I am unable to download the service packs, codecs, etc. and that is just the beginning of it. I'd like to get a real version of xp and will probably buy a new hard drive to replace the 40 I have now. I have a larger hard drive for back up and storage but need something bigger for the operating system and programs. I'd like to run several programs including Office, Photoshop, DVD making, etc. I also love fonts and like to have several (billion) on hand.

What would be conservative choice, the mid range, and price is no option hard drives to consider? Also, do I have to change anything else on the computer? (motherboard)

I'll have to have someone install the drive for me but would like to clear the drive and save everything myself to avoid extra cost. Knowing that I have a second internal drive what steps do I take to save my information? I know there are probably tutorials on the web that address this but I have a difficult time understanding computer talk...sometimes. I know how to transfer photos, documents, files like that. I don't know what to do with email, settings, addresses, and others. Also, I have downloaded programs and have software that I no longer have the discs for. How do I save those?

Any ideas on brands, size, etc. of hard drive is appreciated as well as the process of getting ready.

Thanks.

Answer:Making A Change; Could Use Advice On Transfer And What To Buy

One thing you could do would be to leave your Windows installation on the current 40GB drive and use your new drive for storage. That way you don't have to bother with transferring all your settings. You can purchase a valid product key for Windows on-line from Microsoft's website.

Also, even with a non-genuine version of Windows you should be able to install service packs and critical updates. Microsoft's policy is that they do not block critical updates to non-genuine users.

I have several cf 8 to 16G cf cards. I ran hd tach tests on them and they have an average read speed of 4Mb/s through a usb card reader. What is the most economical option to improve the download speed? Firewire card to my laptop? Better reader? Faster cards?

Answer:Improving the transfer speed of cf cards

Buy faster cards.
Firewire would also give you a speed boost over USB2, but only if it's Firewire 800 (not Firewire 400), but a Firewire card for a laptop is rather pricey compared to a Firewire card for tower PC.

Answer:"Windows Easy Transfer can't transfer your files and settings." Why?

Well, I finally gave up. I've scoured the internet for a solution. You'll probably find duplicates of this post all over. This has been a known software problem with Windows Easy Transfer for years and Microsoft has done nothing to fix it or warn users of the risks. Shameful!
Anyway, I managed to recover my files with this life saver of a program here>
MigRecover Utility for Microsoft’s Windows Easy Transfer | Visser Labs
MigRecover Utility for Microsoft's Windows Easy Transfer.
I can't express how grateful I am to the developer and the host for the download. You guys are the most awesomest people ever. Cheers.
Here's how you modify the syntax in commmand prompt if you used a password to protect the mig file in WET>
"Windows Easy Transfer couldn't open the file" on second attempt to recover files/settings
Just remember to change the source drive letter in "C:\SaveData.MIG" to the actual drive it's stored on if your MIG file is on an external drive like mine was; whether it's E:, F:, G: or whatever.
Good luck to anyone with the same issue who stumbles upon this post. I hope it helps you as it did me.

So I bought this USB PC-to-PC Transfer Cable. I have a laptop for downloading files and I work on my PC. I'm constantly having to move the large files using an external HD. I figured I would rather just connect the two computers via this USB cable and transfer my files that way.

No more: plugging in to laptop, transferring to external HD, unplugging from laptop, plugging in to PC, transferring from external HD.

Much simpler in theory I'm afraid. Unfortunately, I have only found "Windows Easy Transfer" which assumes I'm transferring to a new PC which involves clicking through a few senseless screens before I can clarify I'm only moving 2GB and not 200 GBs. Once you start transferring it's SO SLOW. I don't know if this is the Windows software or if transferring over a USB PC-PC cable is going to be REALLY slow no matter what. I have also tried using my Ethernet cable but it only transfers at 1 Mb a second which is even slower.

Does anyone know if there is an alternative program I can use that's faster and just for simply transferring a few files (like windows explorer) ? Or is there a way to boost that Ethernet transfer speed? Otherwise I'm going back to the External HD method.

Thanks

Answer:Alternative To Windows Easy Transfer? (USB Easy Transfer Cable) Maybe Ethernet?

Re: Alternative To Windows Easy Transfer? (USB Easy Transfer Cable) Maybe Ethernet

I do transfers, sometimes in the GB range myself. I drag and drop between USB sticks/external drives and the machine's HD.

I found that TeraCopy gave me measurably better speed transfers on large files. I don't use it for small copy operations as it seems to be a bit slower in some cases. TeraCopy works thru a context menu, when you drag and drop, you'll see options to copy/move with Windows native setup, or you can select TeraCopy move or copy.

Uninstall with this is easy, no problems, so a test drive may be worth your time...

i have two cards, a class 6 and a class 10. The problem is not reproducible on my laptop, which transfers around 8mg/sec.

i've had intermittent problems since upgrading. At first i was getting what i consider a normal transfer rate of 8-10 mg/sec with each card. But several weeks ago I began experiencing rates of UNDER 1 mg/sec. That is KILObytes. It takes an hour to transfer my photographs, which is amazingly not ok.

i have a standard HP set-up, basic computer model, AMD Phenom 8450 Triple-Core 2.1 GHz

i've noticed that when i turn the indexing off, the transfer rate rebounds to normal. But then i have to turn it back on and reboot before either I or a program can locate a file.

which is also amazingly not ok.

i've tried everything i can think of short of a clean reinstall. Which i REALLY would like to avoid. I've already done that twice since upgrading in November.

i really need help. My livelihood is photography, so these long transfer times are costing me time and money, not to mention aggravation.

I'm not a geek but i can follow instructions. I've been fairly hands-on since DOS.

if there is more information you need, please just point me in that direction, and I will do my best to provide it. But without direction i am clueless. I really appreciate any assistance!

Answer:slow transfer from sd cards to hard-drive

If I right click a portable drive and disable indexing for the drive letter. Things are cool.
Next time I look at properties for that portable drive, its got a check mark allowing indexing again that I certainly didn't enable. Wish they would stay unckecked. As soon as I plug in a drive, windows indexing discovers it and starts working on it - indexing is a slow process and slows down the back up images in my use that I'm trying to write to the drive.

This sounds like a dumb question, but here's the background.

My daughter's XP laptop crashed (trashed hard disk that I doubt we can rescue much data from) and so we got her a Windows 7 computer. Unless we can rescue much of the old data from crashed XP, she's pretty much starting off empty.

Except that today I discovered on an external hard drive the "Easy Transfer" of her account from 15 months ago, from a computer she shared at that time, that was used to "port her up" on the XP laptop. So in theory, this "Easy Transfer" archive should have all of her data and files from 15 months ago.

But although the archive LOOKS like regular Windows folders and files, on closer examination, it's not. For example, I know there are jpg and .doc files, plenty of them, in the mix, yet all I see is lots of shortcuts to such files.

Is there a way, without running Windows Easy Transfer (I don't want to mess with her now running and configured Windows 7 laptop), to turn the Easy Transfer archive into a source from which I could copy over selected files and folders onto her new machine?

Answer:Can an Easy Transfer archive be used/read without using Easy Transfer?

Easy transfer sometimes is neither easy nor a true transfer. It is basically to transfer files (data) and settings (configurations). It can however leave you in an in-between state with some of each and neither of both.

It may be easier if everything works according to plan, but can be much more... Read more

We have recently put a microsoft database on a pc and shared it to 3 other users. Its 24mb in size at the moment, but is expected to double in size in a very short time. It runs very fast on the host pc, but is quite slow to load on other machines. Network is running at 100, and all pcs are xp pro and intel processors all over 3 gig.I was wondering if extra ram would maybe help? all pcs have 512mb. Or, maybe the database should be on a seperate hard drive?

Answer:data transfer on network

I assume by Microsoft, you mean Microsoft Access?Access is quite a bandwidth hungry application when used on a network. I would suggest if you are using a large database on a network that you look in to using SQL as this is much faster. The limiting factor is the network, if you stick with Access then I would say the only way to improve performance is upgrade the network to Gigabit. More RAM will make no difference.

This won't be specific to Windows8 but it will apply there just the same I guess;
N.b.: I got myself a Belkin Windows8 Transfer cable (F4U060), which sure doesn't do my job out of the box. Still, solutions for what I want may exist.

I like to setup a WIRED PAN over USB. Googled my life out of me, but all is about wireless. Still it obviously exists, if only Windows7/8 didn't come up with the MS drivers which doesn't give me other opportunities than "Easy Transfer" which is not what I want at all. But, to give an example, "Easy Computer Sync" already comes more close. This, with the same Belkin USB-USB (bridge) cable.

My question for a PAN is fairly explicit, because I don't want to have the normal Network Services around. For example, with a Bluetooth PAN I can do exactly what I want. Well, almost, because it's slow.
Here's the functionality I'm seeking for :

1. Have one PC which plays audio files, and have another where the files are stored. The files should be obtained over the PAN.
2. Have one "laptop" which is a remote to the audio playing PC and which over e.g. RDC controls the audio playing PC.

This is actually NAS, but without LAN services.
This does not specifically require a PAN, if only peer to peer operation is allowed with "network shares". So, when the files on the "file server" can be addressed with shares or drive letters, this will do fine.

This requires the PAN model because it needs TCP/IP to... Read more

Today, I bought an External Hard Drive...WD My Book Live 2TB

When transfering all my music and films to it... I noticed I was getting a peak transfer speed of 10 MBps

My BT Infinity Modem can apparently handle up to 1,000 Mbps.

My math tells me that 1,000 / 8 != 10...

What is bottle-necking my speed? How can I fix that?

I am using Ethernet cables to do it all....

It is not the external Hard drive, it has a built in CPU to help with the speeds and remote cloud access...

I noticed this problem in the past but haven't a clue...

I take it that your NIC is set up to transmit data at 1000Mbps, under the Network Connections properties? (apologies in advance if this is ridiculously obvious! )

Hi all!

Can someone help me set up a PC-to-PC LAN? Both computers have NIC's that run on XP Home and quite simply I don't know where to begin.

I have endlessly searched the internet for a step-by-step guide setting it all up but to no avail, I havenít been successful. I have a cat5 crossover and straight through cable and was wondering if someone would kindly help a beginner sort out her dilemma in setting it up?

Answer:Network/Transfer Files

Use the crossover cable.

Go into control Panel and run the Network Setup Wizard

I have two desktop PC's networked together with a US Robotics 9003 router. Both machines have 10/100T Ethernet cards. Machine 1 has Win XP and machine 2 Win Me. If I open My Nework Places on Machine 1 and View Workgroup Computers then doubleclick on Machine 2 to see the shared files and printer it takes ages to find them. If I repeat the procedure on Machine 2 and look at Machine 1 files it does it instantaneously. The effect is similar when printing. Going from the Win XP to the Win Me machine is horribly slow, going from Win Me to Win XP is incredibly fast. Any ideas anyone? [1]

I have networked two computers (desktop and laptop) over a wireless network. I can see and access both computers from the other computer and everything appears to be working fine. However, when I try to transfer the files from the laptop to the desktop, I keep getting errors saying access denied. I am mostly interested is transferring all the picture folders/files but would prefer getting all the things in "My documents". Is there any way that I am blocking it? The firewall is turned off and I have sharing set on the folder. Should I try to buy a cable to connect them directly? Or should the wireless work fine? Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks

Dan

Both computers use Winows XP
IBM laptop and HP desktop
Let me know if you need any more info.

Answer:file transfer over network

if its saying access denied, it could be a permission problem. check your permissions in the shared folder to make sure youre giving access to the files. and if youre not on the admin account, you should make sure that you have permissions to even access shared files.

I need to transfer a large number of files from a laptop to my desktop. The laptop, sadly, does not have a cd-burner. I'd rather not have to FTP to a webspace. If anyone has any idea how I could just send those files to the computer, that'd be great. Thanks.

I have 3-Com NIC cards (10/100 PCI TX NIC 3C905B-TX)in both Pentium III (one 450 the other 500)computers. The transfer rate seems to be terribly slow. MP3 files, for instance, (3 or four totalling about 16 mbs) take about an hour to transfer from one computer to the other. I have run diagnostic programs and checked the little lights on the cards and all seems okay. I live in Florida and have the cable running through the ceiling. I wonder if the heat is causing the rate to slow?

Thanks for any help.

My server use to be a FreeBSD 5.2 box. Upload transfer speeds over the network were about 1200kBps.
I recent formatted my server to FreeBSD 4.9 and now upload speeds are about 120kBps.
When I was on 5.2, I used both the built in ftp daemon and NFS. Now on 4.9 I use proftpd.
Any ideas what could cause this? What settings should I took at?
Download speeds were not effected.

Thanks,

can you transfer at 'normal' speeds from other machines on the network?
what program are you using to upload to the bsd box from...and what client OS?

also, you dont have proftpd doing any rate limiting do you?

I have a small wired home network of two computers both running Windows XP Home (SP2). My problem is that I can copy or move files from computer B to A, but not from A to B. However if I am on computer B, I can pull files from computer A. The message I get when trying to transfer from A to B is this:
"Cannot copy file: Access is denied. Make sure that the disk is not full or write-protected and that the file is not currently in use."
The disk is not full or write-protected, and the file is not in use.
File sharing is enabled on the folders from which I am trying to transfer files.
Why is this happening? It seems to be more of an access to files problem than a network issue, but I have been unable to find a solution anywhere.

about to do a major hardware upgrade on one of the win7 PCs in the house (will call it PC A), pretty much building a new computer so expecting to have to do a reinstall of the os like i did when upgrading my gaming pc (which will be PC B ). trying to backup important files on PC A by copying them over the network to PC B but am so far unsuccessful.

both computers are running 64bit win7 ultimate.
both can see each other and access each others shares fine.
just can't copy files over.

trying to copy the files from PC A to one of the slave drives on PC B
on both PCs: the drives are shared, network discovery is on, password protected sharing is off, file and printer sharing is on.
also tried going directly to the folder on PC B and setting the permissions so that 'everyone' had 'full control'

i don't see anything that would cause an issue. yet when i am on PC A trying to copy files to PC B it says that i need permission to copy the files.
anybody have any ideas?

if possible, i'd rather fix the problem so i could send them from PC A to PC B instead of having to copy everything to the public documents folder in PC A and using PC B to grab them.

Answer:can't transfer files over network

What is the file path for these files?

If they are in My Docs/Settings folders...you may have to specifically enable those folders to be shared between systems.

I found this out some time ago when sharing files between my XP computers...even though I have the entire drive and all contents marked as shared, Windows will not let me access those folders from the other system (I have two) unless I specifically share Docs/Settings, Desktop, etc. folders via the Sharing/Security tab from Explorer view.

Once done, it's no problem to access/copy/move from the other system.

All other files should be easily accessed, etc. if you have set the drive/partition up in shared status properly.

I have 2 PC's hooked up to my router (Linksys WRT54GS) which is connected to a modem. the main issue that i am having is whenever i try to access PC - B from PC- A to transfer files accross PC - B freezes on the transfer and kicks itself from the network or just the net and cannot access the other computer. the only way i can get it back onto the net and accessing the other computer is by restarting it

the only settings i have changed on the router for it to access the MAC addresses for my wireless laptop.

both computers are hooked up to the router through ethernet cables, both have the same version of windows (xp), both have specific IP/DNS, both firewalls have been turned off, both have the same workgroup.

anyone had the same problem and/or know what is wrong cause its about 5 mins from being thrown out the upstairs window

What is the easiest way I can transfer files over ethernet from my desktop to my laptop? Do I have to setup a HomeGroup to do this?

Answer:File transfer over network

Open computer (my computer) on desktop. Go to organize near top left then choose folder and search options. Go to view tab. Then at bottom in advanced settings, uncheck use sharing wizard.

Now go to the folder or drive you wish to share. Right click on it and choose properties, then sharing tab. Click advanced sharing.

Now check the box to put share this folder. Enter a unique share name. If you will only be sharing to the laptop, put simultaneous users to 1. Hit permissions box and change that to your satisfaction. I personally use "everyone" and allow all permissions. OK your way out.

Make sure you have a password set for your desktop account to share from. If not, create one.

Now you can go on your laptop, open computer (my computer) and map the network drive that we just created. Examples are

\\DesktopIpAddress\uniquesharename

or

\\computername\uniquesharename

Ever since I've upgraded to win 7 pro on my htpc, everytime I want to transfer a large file to another computer, the rig just reboots instantly without any bsod's. The strange thing is that downloading files from other network pc's is fine but just the uploading is the issue. Also, I've notice right before it crashes, the status of the transfer speed is over 100MB/s which can't be right since I've only have gigabit and my hd's max out at 60MB/s.
I've tried changing the nic drivers, transfering in safe mode, turned off antivirus and nothing has worked. I am stumped. My other pc's have win 7 home prem installed. Sometimes, when I'm lucky, the file transfer will produce an error 0x800705AA: Insufficient system resources exist to complete the requested service. Tried googling the error message but nothing has help.

I'm having a very strange issue here. I have two machines, one Windows 7 Professional machine as a client and an XP Pro machine that I'm using as a server (a game server). However, to install the files I need on the server, I have to transfer them from my client (thus switching roles, but don't let that confuse you). The only issue is, when connecting to the internet I get about 8Mb/s transfer rates on both machines, however, when using Windows Explorer to transfer files from the client to the server, the file transfer speed is about 100 bytes per second. Yes, bytes. But here's the kicker, when I use a program called TerraCopy to transfer files, it moves the files much faster (about 2-5MB/s). What on earth could this possibly be?

Oh yes, I'm using a wireless network, but I also tried using a different router and hard wiring both machines together and got the exact same result.

Previously 2 vista machines both have the same onboard realtek NIC, both gigabit on a gigabit switch, using cat 5e cable.

Realtek onboard with Realtek onboard - 40-100mb/s over network

I put in an EVGA Killer xeno card in one machine now, and my transfer speeds are more like 100mbps then gigabit, the transfer speed on large files is 8-11mb/s

latest drivers for both, jumbo frames @ 9k(supported by switch) on the realtek

both detect as gigabit

Hi. I have a basic home network set up through a workgroup. When I copy a file to my other computer, the transfer goes really slow - around an hour for 100MB. This is bad. Granted my router is only rated at 11Mbps, it should still go much faster. The speed it actually transfers equates to about 28K/s tops.

I may have made a mistake converting the numbers, but I know it goes very slow. It's pretty bad when I can connect and transfer files with a computer in Tokyo faster than one in my living room. What's the deal here!?

Answer:Why does my network transfer so slow?

One of the biggest problems I run into is Duplex settings. Now every one says that the best thing to do is to set both you router/switch to auto and your Nic to auto, however I beg to differ. Each peice of hardware is different and I have found many that do not like to talk to eachother and auto sense the settings. So this would be my first suggestion, try to hard code the duplex settings to 100 megs Full duplex on both your router (if possible) and your workstation.

I'm looking for a bit of software that will allow be to queue up items and then hit 'GO' and they'll be transferred in order over LAN not the Intenret, ideally was thinking of something that had a similiar interface to most FTP clients.

Thanks in advance.

I did google it, but as I predicted I got a lot of results from FTP clients and nothing revelvant to what I wanted.

I'm not sure what changed, but I am no longer able to stream of my home server

windows home server 2011 with drive bender using the onboard sata 3gbps ports

wireless N devices are all connected at 300mbps and transfer speeds are around 512kbps. I switched to an old wrt54g and the speeds went up just a hair to about 1mbps while showing a 54mbps connection

copying an item from the drive bender pool on the home server to the boot drive averages around 150mbps, so it doesn't seem as though the drive pool is causing slow reads. I have tried using xbmc shares which are unplayable and navigating to the shared folders through the network and copying (which is how I based my drive speed)

I am beginning to think I should just dump for freenas

Answer:Network transfer speeds are terrible

2 things.

Use a wireless site survey tool and make sure you're not overlapping spectrum with a neighbor.

Change the channel width setting on your 2.4Ghz wireless to 20Mhz. Your speed should be 144Mbps.

Using WPA2 AES, 20Mhz channel width you should be able to stream files at 9-11MBps or 66-88Mbps.

40Mhz channel width can be faster, but only with, an excellent signal, compatible client/server radios, no overlap in the wireless spectrum and no wireless noise present.

Keep in mind that mbps and Mbps are two different things. As MBps and Mbps are also two different measurements.

Mega verses milli

Bytes verses bits

I have several computers in use for my daily work. One is behind the corporate firewall, and is the one I need to access certain sites for data I use in other places. Those other places are other computers on my home office network. All computers are on the same network.

I need the ability to copy text from the clipboard on one computer and get it to the other computer where I need to paste it.

I know about all the web sites that can do this, but since there is corporate data involved, I don't want to do it this way. I'd like a utility I can run on each machine to 'link' them for this purpose.

I am having issues with transfer speed on my network. I have a D-Link DIR-655 wireless N router. Two PC's.

My gaming PC is also a server of sorts. E6600, 4 gb of RAM, Wireless N PCI card, Win 7 Pro 64.

I have a small e6400 machine, 4 gb ram, Win 7 Pro 32, 1gigabit connection, hardwired to the router. This one is hooked up to the TV.

I want to stream my movie/tv collection from my gamin PC, which is on the other side of the room to the TV. The gaming machine/server has 4 drives, with a dedicated 1tb drive for video storage. The machine connected to the TV has one 300 gb drive. Right now, I am getting 1.8 mbps transfer speeds. This is causing very choppy playback. I am using VLC for playback. How can i increase my transfer speeds across the network? Is 1.8mbps as good as it gets?

New Vista PC - want to transfer files and settings from old XP. Downloaded Windows Easy Transfer on XP planning to transfer via network. Both pcs are plugged into D-Link wireless router (via cable - I use the wireless capability for my laptop that is turned off currently while I deal with these changes).

When I run Easy Transfer, Vista says "cannot detect the other computer on your network. Make sure that your network is working and both computers are connected over the same local network."

My Network Places on the XP shows only its own files under "Local Network" and all the other computers' under "The Internet." The Vista shows the XP under Network but then says I don't have permission to access it.

I also see on the XP under Network Connections that the LAN is connected, but the Internet Gateway is Disabled. I double-clicked on it, it said "connecting" then "connected" but still shows as Disabled.

Here is my setup:

2-Desktop PCs
2-Qualcomm Atheros AR938x wireless cards, both connected on 5Ghz network at 450 Mbps
Router-E4200, latest firmware, the only 5Ghz network in the area

One PC has a drive bender drive pool on it that I'm trying to read/write from. Testing the pool w/ crystal disk mark on the local pc shows fast speeds (650 MB/s read, 67 MB/s write), so I drive bottlenecks aren't the issue.

Connecting at 450 Mbps i would expect to see something like at least 200 Mbps actual speeds, or is this off? Using LAN Speed test I'm getting 41 write and 52 read. Not great. Any ideas here whats going on? Thanks!

Answer:Slow network transfer speeds

200Mbps if you are lucky, or shall I say "theoretically". There is so much more than just the contention aspect, which is a straight 50% off any advertised speed they tell you.
The problem isn't the PC's, Router, or the Wireless cards. They are working exactly as expected. The problem my friend is, the Wireless. Those speeds are not completely unreasonable given the circumstances. If you're going to want more you're either going to have to invest in bleeding edge 802.11ac equipment or hardwire.

I was wondering if anyone has solved the very slow network file transfer issue on windows 7? I get like 1.0mbps on a wireless-G laptop to wireless-N desktop using a netgear wndr3700 router. I have tried disabling remote differential compression on both computers. The laptop is Vista and the desktop is Windows 7. This slow network transfering speed is driving me nuts.

Answer:Slow network transfer on Windows 7

Now did you mean Megabits or megabytes?

If it's Megabytes/sec, that's about what you're gonna get if they are both on 2.4ghz due to the nature of how wireless works. If the N desktop is on 5ghz only then you should see around 2.5 megabytes/sec max transferring from the G laptop. I haven't used this router, so I don't even know if it supports 5ghz and 2.4ghz at the same time, probably does.

If it's mbits, than that is a piss poor number. Are you running Vista SP2? Do you know if the channel you are running on is clean? If using 2.4ghz mode for N access, is 40mhz wide-band mode enabled?

On a wire, I have no file transfer slowdowns between vista and 7.

The "Easy Transfer" is nice and easy but it is definately SLOW. That is IMHO completely normal

Server: HP Proliant Windows Storage Server 2003 SP2

My System: HP Z820 2xXeon E5-2630 64GB RAM and 4xIntel 300GB SSD in RAID 0 running Windows 8.1

Network: Gigabit Wirespeed switches

I am transferring backup images (roughly 20-40GB each) from the storage server to my local system and I am only getting 10-11MB per second which works out to about 88Mbits per second. That is about 9% of a 1Gb connection. My system can handle writing more than 11MB per second so I know it isn't my local storage subsystem causing this slowdown.

It is something with the network. When I ping the server it is less than 1 ms response. Does anyone have any idea why this would be happening? From what I found online people were suggesting everything from turning off Flow Control to updating registry keys. Curious if any of you have any suggestions before I go off trying random googled ideas.

Answer:Slow Network Transfer Speed

First thing I would look at is what kind of disks the storage on the Server is and what RAID configuration, if any, is being used.

The second issue would be that your using Server 2003 which uses an older SMB transfer protocol for data transfers. If the I/O on the storage server is not the issue you may have a tuning issue. There are many options for trying to re-tune this. Getting a copy of Server 2008 or newer might be worthwhile.
