Hello, I have my original activation key but when trying to finalize it, windows tells me this key is only for upgrades not for clean installs?
I had to to do clean install and it was from my original official backup disc so I'm not sure what the problem is?
I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.
I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.
You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)
Maybe you bought an upgarde disc and not a full install disc.
Use your original disc, not the backup.
I have 4 systems to maintain - all had Win7 Ultimate 64bit, and all upgraded (free) to Win10 Pro successfully. Toward the end of this year, all 4 systems will have new motherboards, CPUs, memory and possibly SSDs.
I understand that major hardware changes will cause a deactivation state in Win10 (although I never had any issues with Win7 and hardware upgrades). It would be nice to just pop the old SSDs into each new system, do a few driver updates and be done...
I have seen references that the Win10 upgrade was ONLY good for the hardware it was installed on and you will have to purchase a copy of Win10 for your new hardware. I have also seen references that all you have to do is call MicroSoft, explain about your new hardware and reactivation should not typically be a problem.
I know I can start from scratch and put the original 7 on all of them and then do the free Win10 upgrade again, but this is tedious and I will likely lose most, if not all, of the third-party software (and games) that I had installed across the systems.
So the question is: has anyone done a major hardware upgrade after a free upgrade to Win10 from a valid Win7 / Win8 and successfully reactivated (assuming you were prompted for a reactivation)?
If you put in a new motherboard and CPU - it is a very BAD idea to move the old Windows installation over to it anyway due to the major differences in drivers that will result.
But, if you really want to try it that way - replace all the components and put in a blank hard drive or SSD. Install Windows 7 to it. Upgrade to Windows 10. Make sure that is activated. Then either put the old hard drive back in or clone the old hard drive to the new hard drive/SSD. The old Windows 10 should calculate the same Hardware ID for the new components as the upgrade Windows 10 did and will retrieve the activation from the activation servers that was pushed when you did the Windows 7 to Windows 10 upgrade prior. Maybe. Worth a try.
If you previously had Windows 7 retail licenses and product keys, read the Windows 10 upgrade EULA and notice that it says that retail licenses are supposed to upgrade to retail licenses and retain transferability, but in reality they upgrade to OEM licenses of Windows 10. Push the issue with Microsoft and they might give you retail Product Keys for Windows 10.
If you had OEM licenses for Windows 7 before, then it violates the EULA to transfer those Windows 7 (and resulting Windows 10 upgrades) to the new systems created by a motherboard and CPU upgrade.

Hey all,
So what is the latest when it comes to re-installing Windows 10 after an upgrade in this post-CD Key world?
My stepson?s rig is (an FX-8350) is starting to have problems, and I suspect the motherboard might be on the way out. I am considering replacing it with a motherboard CPU bundle at Microcenter (Maybe a low end Ryzen?) but I am concerned what will happen with Windows 10 when I do so.
I remember reading that if you register your system with a windows account it automatically remembers it and re-activates, but I don?t do windows accounts.
All of my systems are local accounts only, and no one in the house has a Microsoft account or wants one. Under no circumstance will I sign up for a Microsoft account or have nay of the machines in my house tied to one. It?s a matter of principle.
So, in this circumstance, what happens if ? after the upgrade and reinstall ? Windows 10 fails to activate? Is there a number I can call or something? And if so, how do I prove I have a legitimate copy, if I don?t have a CD-Key? Using the CD Key of the old Windows 7 disc I upgraded him from?
I?d appreciate any information and suggestions anyone may have regarding this process!
I recently installed a new SSD hard drive and did a clean install of Windows 7 Professional on it. Regrettably, it's not letting me validate it with my product key because my original hard drive started with Windows 7 Home Premium (I have the product key for that) and I had downloaded the upgrade to Professional (I have the product key for that too), but because I went straight to Win7 Professional on the clean install, it won't accept my product key because it's just an upgrade. I get the reasoning behind that but there has to be a way (I hope) with BOTH product keys to verify I'm a legitimate user without reinstalling Home Premium just to turn around and upgrade to Pro? Hoping against hope!
Any help would be appreciated, thanks.
Is the original hard drive still in the loop, did you take it out of the system ?
9 more repliesGreetings!
This is relatively new experience for me and I have spent some time Googling for solutions.
A friend of mine upgraded his genuinely activated Windows 8 Pro Parallels virtual machine to Windows 10 Pro. After the upgrade, he finds that his Windows 10 Pro is not activating. When I check, the error 0xC004C003 states that the activation is being blocked.
A common suggestion I have encountered was to install the OS from scratch, but that isn't practical in this situation. I am also aware that with Windows 10 the licensing is based on unique hardware identification, which makes me feel that this might affect virtual machine installations due to the nature of virtualizaiton, but surely Microsoft had thought about this before rolling out Windows 10 with the new licensing scheme (or at least I hope).
Another suggestion I read and tried was "slrmgr.vbs /rearm" --> reboot --> "slrmgr.vbs /ato". I still receive the same error. I also tried "slrmgr.vbs /ipk Windows8KeyHere" but it didn't work. I received an error code "0xc004e016" about the key being invalid.
Any ideas?
If he doesn't want to reinstall, call Microsoft's licensing number and complain.
keeps asking for reactivation. does not allow reactivation. I used a registry cleaner. Maybe this is the problem. I have tried a few fixes on other forums. Please let me know what other info I need to share.

Hi there
anybody else got this -- trying to personalize PC -got you need to activate windows before you can personalize PC.
Now what do I do !!!!!?!
Is this normal (I did an UPDATE rather than a new install BTW).
Cheers

Hello Jimbo,
See if you may be able to activate with the same Windows 10 Technical Preview key below.
Product key: NKJFK-GPHP7-G8C3J-P6JXR-HQRJR
https://www.tenforums.com/windows-10-...l-preview.html
You should be able to use the same OPTION TWO below for Windows 8 in Windows 10 as well.
Activate Windows 8 Online
Hi there
I recently changed a MOBO from an INTEL based one to one using an AMD PHENOM processor -- W7 didn't want any new activation rather surprisingly. (Broken Mobo and I had a spare ASUS MOBO lying around).
However the first time I switched to using a LAN cable instead of a Wifi USB adapter I got the "Hardware has changed - please activate windows. OK it activated fine -- however seems strange to me that a MOBO change didn't call for any activation (Disks, memory, DVD device etc were canaballized from the old machine) but a simple switch from Wifi to a LAN did. !!! The internal logic of the activation process seems totally illogical and bizarre. (Running W7 x-64 ULTIMATE). !!!
Cheers
jimbo

hi all
is SLP loader functions the same as windows activator?
i'm using Win Server 2003 Standard Edition as my OS. currently, it's already prompting and i have 27-days left for activation
this all happened when i initiate System Recovery using the same CD installer i used to setup the same computer almost 3-years ago. i did so as it hung-up and i can't managed even to go into Safe Mode, as well, the so called Last Known Good Configuration but still to no avail
i used the same CD Key i used initially before but it won't accept or recognized it where it states that if my CD Key was right and still not updating then i should telephone Microsoft
wow!
can i do that when i'm not in the continental USA much more these computer was registered not under my name since it's only a hand-me-down or surplus which is beneficial to me
so i'm looking for SLP loader or windows activator (if it function the same way) intended for Win Server 2003 Standard Edition as it may resolve my issue
hope it's okay to inquire and that if it's not advisable to reply post in here, i welcome it through PM
If it's a valid key, you should have no problem calling MS to re-activate Windows.
It should give you an option to pick which country you're from on the activation window, and then a number to call.
So when the big Windows 7 preorder deals were flying around, I jumped on the one newegg was offering and it's still on hold waiting for the October release.
I was wondering if anyone has a concrete answer as to whether or not you actually have to have Vista or XP installed AND ACTIVATED before you're able to use your upgrade CD to install Windows 7.
any info is appreciated

Hi guys , I installed ATI 2010 Home, Boxed version made a backup image to external HDD. got a message saying I had 30 days to activate trial version? I restored the backup image and I activated ATI , offline, I then received a message saying thanks successfully installed. When I access ATI now I get the same box asking for activation again. the options are Try out, Buy, Activate, Cancel . I was thinking of reactivating online , but am wary of further messing up the install . I have not registered the product yet , Had a look at the Acronis register page ( they tell you Not recommended to access the page) ? Any ideas with this one ? options uninstall , reinstall? Try activate online? Anyone experienced this problem?
Hi guys, this ones solved, I took a chance11 rebooted, connected to the internet, started ATI and reactivated online it worked . Same as last time only the ATI icon seems to be different, have tested it a few times and goes straight into Acronis without problems now. Done!
Hi Gents,
Hope someone can help me here. I've been using a retail version of Win7 Home premium 64 for about 2 years now with no issues.
During that time I've reinstalled the product possibly 6 or 8 times. Excessive I know but when things start to go wrong I like to start fresh again. Anyway from memory the last 2 times I have had to use phone activation.
A couple of weeks ago I dropped my laptop and killed the HDD. Put in a new one and reinstalled Win. I've just tried to activate with no luck. I went to phone activation and being lazy I typed in my old code I had saved from last time.
Now I can't activate and when I try and open the phone activation box I get a pop up from the toolbar saying the copy isn't genuine and nothing more.
Is there a way to resolve this or have I pissed off the activation so much that I actually have to shell out for a new copy?
Thanks in advance and I'm located in Thailand if that makes a difference.

If one has Windows 7 RC in use with a RC-productkey, is it possible to change the productkey to the 'official' one (after 22-10) in order to obtain a legal OS?
Hello Henks, and welcome to Seven Forums.
I'm sorry, but you will not be able to use a retail (RTM) product key for pre-retail versions (RC or Beta) versions of Windows 7.

If I install XP Pro corporate on the 25th out of 25 machines and this machine then needs to have a re-install, can I activate a 26th time?Canit be done over the internet or is this what M$ has disabled?
Do you mean you have formatted 25 times and installed WinXP?You can format your system as much as you wish and you can still activate Windows. You should be able to activate it over the internet as usual, but Microsoft will stop you from doing this if you keep formatting it, so that you will phone them and they will ask you why you keep formatting. If the reason is genuine, then they will give you a code to type in and allow you to activate Windows over the net again. (They do this for security as someone may be installing Windows onto identical computers and teh activation tool wont know this if they have the same hardware.)
4 more repliesI bought windows vista last week and I took the 4 discs out of the plastic and threw it in the bin. Little did I know the activation key was on that plastic. (stupid place to put it!!!!)
Now it's in the back of a garbage truck.
Do I have to buy Vista again? I ordered it through work.
What do I do??!!!
you have only one option and this is to contact Microsoft and buy a new key.
This thread will be closed before illegal activities are discussed
What happens when you try & activate it? Some OEM reinstalls don't require you to put the activation key in during the install but they still need activating, & occasionally you need to re-input the key from the CoA sticker. Incidentally, a few laptops I've come across, the manufacturer has put the CoA in the battery compartment, underneath the battery, so it doesn't get worn off."I've always been mad, I know I've been mad, like the most of us..." 3 more repliesHi
When I try to activate Windows Vista, i get error message 0x800705B4 and I have been unable to activate it. Is anyone able to help?
So,
I had Win 8.1 retail on my machine, updated it to W10.
Now I swapped the mobo and trying to activate W10 again.
It won't accept my old serial...is there a way to activate it? I thought retail (not OEM) versions could be transferred to a new build as long as they are removed from the previous build?
Actually, the way I had done it was wrong; I had used the ShowKeyPlus to reveal what was my original code and that was all wrong. Found the original serial and everything is fine, Windows activated :-)
1 more repliesI recently upgrade from XP to Win 7. Did so on 3 computers. One now keep's
giving me this message that "Windows 7 could not activate" then upon clicking on it give's alternatives to activate, phone, re-enter product key. I re-entered the key 3 X to make sure it was right, and was told it was not the right key, this is the same key I used to upgrade to begin with and have two other computers working with this key. Windows is operating normally but why this message? I am afraid that Win 7 might stop working if this is not resolved. T.I.A. for any help.
Correct me if I'm wrong here, you used the same key on all 3 machines? It sounds like you don't have multiple copies of W7. It's one machine per copy unless you got a pack and that's out of my league to answer.
I recently accidentally wiped my hard drive after trying to restore my master boot record, and I've needed to reinstall Windows. I have a Dell OEM XP SP2 disc laying around and I installed it without a hitch. My problem? It's on an HP. It constantly asks me to activate. Now I know this may be a stupid question, so be gentle. Can I call Microsoft to get it activated without any flak from them? I would call and try, but I'm kind of paranoid that they'll ask a question that will get me busted. I may be a worrywart, but I have to make certain before I call. Thanks for your help in adavnce.
an OEM disc is meant to stay with its original Motherboard..while you can get away with changing out the HDD, it can ONLY be activated with the MoBo it was originally activated with...
in short, no, you cannot activate your copy since you've put it on a different MoBo..AFAIK, you're gonna have to get a new copy of XP...they are usually on sale for around $130 for the OEM version...
hi
i formated my laptop(EXTENSA TRAVELMATE 2490) with windows xp proffessional so i couldnt activate until 30 days of activation expireration. the problem is i cant activate by internet coz LAN drivers ar not available and i tried to download some couldnt work. to activate by 4ne failed coz the 4ne number from where iam(botswana) is not working and there is no tollfree number. is there any possible way i could use to activate my OS?
Download the drivers on another computer and then transfer it over to your computer.
2 more replieshi allmy sister has a problem getting dsl enabled. she is in an active area and has contacted an ISP and has been told that a DSL connection is already active on that line.i think the problem is that the people who lived there before her had a DSL line but didn't de-activate it, so obviously she can't create another one.BT say she needs to contact the ISP that provided the connection before they can do anything to connect her, but, because it was the previous tenants, she doesn't know them and so cannot find out who the ISP is!!any ideas on how to gain this info would be most appreciated.
If your sister has taken over the line, BT should be in a position to tell her who the ISP is.The only other way I can think of is to connect a modem and see who it tries to connect to.
5 more repliesI run XP Pro SP3 (Activated) Dual Boot with Windows 7 Pro 64bit and XP Mode (full retail 64 bit version). I was putting off activating the 7 in case I would make some hardware changes over the next week or so. I kept getting the activate warning counting down the days.
When I stopped getting these messages I was curious so hit the activate on line only to be informed that 7 was already activated.
I do not recall entering the number! What is the method to check within the 7 program that it has been activated. Can the number be verified?

After going there, check the bottom of the page and see if you have a "Windows is Activated" notification below the "Windows Activation" tab.
I activated my copy of XP on one of my computers about a month ago, but said computer is on it's last leg. My Mom got me an old computer from her work, and I've installed the same version of XP on it. This brought to my attention that only one computer can have XP activated on it a time. Is there a way for me to "unactivate" XP on the computer I'll be throwing out, so that I can use it on my computer that actually works?
I believe a simple phone call to MS activation will solve the problem - buy yes, you can do that...
laptop gateway m6391 windows vista home basic 32 bits, my original operation was windows vista premium , but as my computer got hanged , so i borrowed windows vista and loaded it , but now i cant
activate it , my original window vista home premium key is at the back of the laptop. need your help to to upgrade to my original or recover vista home premium as the key at the back of the laptop
Where are your original install cd's? You can't 'borrow' an OS disk to install, as that OS is installed on another computer already. You will need to find your original install disks or call MS and talk to them.
I installed Windows XP (on a different machine than I'm using now). The 30 day activation grace period expired before I got hooked up to the internet, and now I can't start up anything. Is there a way to register now that I have the internet so that I may use my good CPU?
You can't use a single XP license concurrently on 2 PC's. With that disclaimer, go to start>all programs>accessories>system tools>activate windows.
You may have to activate over the phone. It's a bit tedious but it works.
Want to thank all that helped me being able to do a fresh install of 7. To activate your fresh install just type Slui 3 at a Administator command propt and put in the Product key from you Sticker. I am glad that Microsoft is giving respect to those that just want to run the machene and OS that the payed for with hard earned cash.... Now if I can just figure out all these Event Logs... But thats the fun of it all...
Usually we just type in the key during the install, but I always wait a while before activating
2 more repliesInstalled XP on my computer recently and it keeps saying I have to activate it in XX days. Do I really have to? As in, it won't work after the time runs out? I tried to activate it and I go to activate over the internet, don't want to register it, just activate then it brings me to a screen with "incorrect prouct key" at the top. It gives me boxes to type it in, so I do but the only options on the bottom are "Telephone", "Remind me Later" and "Retry" and when I type in the code and go to retry it it brings me back to the same screen. If the key was wrong how could I install it in the first place? Strange, help is appreciated.
I hate XP, but my MP3 software required it :(
once the time expires you will not be able to use the computer
if the key will be accepted phone micrsoft on the number it gives you
After I uninstalled my nvidia driver and replaced it with ATI because I switched my graphics card to ATI, Windows said I have to Activate it because alot of software and stuff was changed. It tells me how to Activate it;Start/All Programs/Accessories/System Tools/ Activate Windows. I click on it and and a Windows pops up, like this:
Nothing happens, inside how can I activate my windows?
Hello Liquiddragon,
Go here..................
http://www.microsoft.com/worldwide/
then telephone your nearest Microsoft Support Centre, and explain to them what has happened...you will need your original Installation Disk, as they will ask you a couple of questions about the security code number that's on the spindle hole.
Good Luck, and post back here with what happens.

Hello ,
Please should be informed that i disabled the SMB in my computer with OS 8.1 using the bellow command :
To disable SMBv1 on the SMB server, run the following cmdlet:
Set-SmbServerConfiguration -EnableSMB1Protocol $false
To disable SMBv2 and SMBv3 on the SMB server, run the following cmdlet:
Set-SmbServerConfiguration -EnableSMB2Protocol $false
so i can't access to any share item .
when i enabled the smb using
To enable SMBv1 on the SMB server, run the following cmdlet:
Set-SmbServerConfiguration -EnableSMB1Protocol $true
To enable SMBv2 and SMBv3 on the SMB server, run the following cmdlet:
Set-SmbServerConfiguration -EnableSMB2Protocol $true
I still have no access to shared folders
can you help me please to solve this issue
I used the "anytime upgrade" option and upgraded Home Premium to Professional. I have decided that $90+ is a bit too much for the additional perks, and I have 3 days to activate Pro version. My question is what will happen in 3 days if I don't activate the Pro upgrade? My hope is that it will revert back to Home Premium, but will it stay in "pro" version and keep bugging me to put in the new key?
This is unlikely... There is no functionality in Windows 7 that permits it to roll-back to a previous version because you didn't purchase a new key...
I'm guess you're going to have to reinstall Premium...
Luck
I have a legitimate copy of windows 7 home edition 64-bit. But for some strange reason, for the past week i have been getting a pop up saying that i need to re-activate. When i re-enter the key a window pops up saying that i can't activate using this key, and do i want to buy another on line???
Does anyone know what this is all about. Oh by the way the pop ups come from the task bar and look legitimate, not like any scams.
Thanks in advance.
Have you called MS? When I have had to call them for a re-activation, it was pretty painless.
My new computer came with an activation key for XP at the side of the PC. I used that key once and now I want to activate Windows again because I reinstalled but it says I used it too often and have 30 days to activate.
You must telephone Microsoft and explain your situation.
1 more repliesOK today I got a random re-activation message on my Win7 Pro. The only thing that has changed was that I updated my video card driver yesterday. They actually said that might be the cause.
Has anyone else seen anything like this?
Activation is much more closely tied to hardware now than it was in the past, but that shouldn't cause a big problem, unless you have an OEM version of W7.
5 more repliesHi you all.
I have a small question.
I just built a new machine,a e6600 with a p5b delux mobo.
I installed xp using a old cd that i had(just because i havent bought a new xp yest)
I know that this isnt a leagel copy, but i thought that id install it and then i have 30 day to validate it.
bute here comes the problem.
I cant get it validated with the new key.
when i look at the system properties it says oem and dell, and i dont have a dell.
So i think that the cd i used was some kind of coperate version of a dell xp,
now i try to validate it with a key that i know works, that i use at work and have ok to use(its a multi licence key)
But i only get invalid key.
Does the XXXXXX-640-7721335-XXXXX from the system properties have anything to do with the validation?
Cause my com at home has XXXXX-Oem-XXXXXXX-XXXXX.
And if i change that will i be able to activate it?
Thanks in advance

I am pretty sure this website is not here to provide cracks or serial keys to paid programs.
After a RAM defect, my recovery disc would not function. System would not boot. With defective RAM replaced, and still not booting, I replaced the Hard drive -incredibly cheap now - and did a clean re-install using an OEM Windows disk purchased for another machine. All went well, & the licence code for this machine was accepted. It does demand reactivation, which is 'not available' on-line. Am I likely to have a problem, since this machine was originally a 'volume manufacture' with only a 'recovery' disk?
Shouldn't be a problem; call MS and use the automated service via phone.
5 more repliesHave a friend which the last few days got a Message telling that the computer need activation, and that he must og to computer settings, and choose activation. But if we try that, nothing happend. Also tried many restarts without Luck!
But if I look under controlpanel - system, it says that the computer is activated and he still keep getting this messaged. If I try running "slmgr/xpr" then it tells that the volume licens runs out 7. november.

Kåre!
Anyone know how many times you can activate Windows XP? I have had to reinstall 4 times in 6 months because of problems and have had to phone in because of installing on newer computer.
If you are using the same computer and same licence without changing your hardware you can backup your Windows Activation state.
Before formatting copy the following files to a safe place that will still be available after wiping your hard drive such as a USB Flash Drive or a Floppy Disk.
%SYSTEM32%\wpa.dbl
%SYSTEM32%\wpa.bak <-- This one may not be present
Once you have formatted and reinstalled window you will need to reboot into safe mode by restarting your computer and pressing F8 until the boot menu appears and selecting Safe Mode
Once in safe mode rename the exisiting files (if present) to:
%SYSTEM32%\wpa.dbl.old
%SYSTEM32%\wpa.bak.old
Then copy the 2 files from your 'safe place' into the system32 folder.
Now when you reboot into Normal mode your windows will be activated.
In the past, whenever I needed to reinstall XP on a machine, I would use a full retail version CD, then go through the activate-over-the-internet screens. I would then use the telephone activation. After reading the installation id to the computer, it would fail, then transfer me to the polite Indian person who would give me the correct activation code after I explained this was a reinstall. Sometimes I would need to give the correct license code (these were always legitimate licenses with the sticker intact), but usually not. I've done this hundreds of times.
Recently, on two occasions, (both with HP machines, btw), I have been transferred to the piracy-police section of MS, and told that my install won't activate unless I reinstall with the original OEM CD.
I like using the retail CD because it already has SP2, and I only need 100 or so updates to bring it current after the install. :-)
So...has there been a change in the activation procedure? Is there a better procedure for me to use, or do I need to start stockpiling OEM cds?
Thanks!!
Tuner
it sounds like you did not purchase the retail version and they would know as soon as you gave them the serial
they are cracking down on pirated copies and on oem,now oem can only be sold with a full computer,a cable and a h/d and the like no longer qualifies

1. Call Microsoft and buy a new one...
2. Contact the computer maker/person who installed XP and see if they can help...
3. DL a key finder to locate the key (Magical JellyBean)...
You mean Windows XP product key?
Check to see if its attached to the computer case somewhere.
Or if the computer is still running you can use Belarc to see what it is: http://www.belarc.com/free_download.html
I installed Office Student and Teacher Edition 2003 but each time I open Word I keep getting this message : You must activate your installation to fully enable all the features. Hi i recently installed Vista and after a month or so it rejected the OS. I tried putting in the Key that is located bhind the tower of the Desktop PC (Which is an XP activation key) But as far as i know u can update windows xp home to vista basic home. The way i got it on the desktop is by a Dell OEM installation disc, any advice as to what i should do? ty in advance
You have to use the Vista key, not the XP key.
If you are upgrading, and asked for the key number give the Vista number.

Hello Geeks
I finally seem to be running XP without a hitch with a 533 Celeron Processor.
I upgraded to 256 RAM (the most allowed). I changed the PS2 mouse to a serial mouse and changed the FAT32 file system to NTFS. Anyway when I upgrade how do I install the XP onto another HDD. How does that work? Can I activate the XP again after I upgrade to a different system if it was the same copy of XP? Am I stuck with this copy of XP on this computer?
Is it a one time deal?
Thanks
No it's not a 1 time deal. You will have to activate it over the phone. This is such a grey area though. Microsoft haven't said anything officially about installing XP on more than one system.
They even ask you now when you activate it "have you installed this on any other machines"? You simply have to reply "no".
Hi, can you help an old gimmer? I purchased a copy of Win 7 on Ebay back in July. I was taken to hospital on the day that I received it. So I was not able to install it until last week. The activation failed and said the code was not genuine, (although it is on the box); the buyer is no longer on Ebay and I have no way of contacting him/her. So is there any work around, or do I have to bite the bullet and buy another version???? Anticipating your replies, LFU2
The product key should be on the Windows cover, inside the plastic box.
2 more repliesHi
I am working on a recent compaq running xp hm sp 2 - evidentally after the owner did a windows update, the fit hit the shane, so to speak, and had no backup. they also had no xp cd. I have a similar dell cd, xp home sp 2.
To make a long story short, the owner does not want to lost data, so I thought I might be able to use my cd. I feel like the liscencing issue should not be a problem because each pc has its own seperate coa sticker on the case and they run the same operating system.
If everyone agrees that the existing liscenses are fine, maybe you can set my on the right path for the next part:
I thought to recover windows using the xp cd. after booting off the cd, then repairing the operating system, it wants me to activate. the ethernet does not appear to be working, but the modem does. xp tries to dial in to verify, but does not receive a confirmation. It then gives me the option to telephone in to verify. This is an automated process, with no-one to speak with other than the "operator" - evidentially a computer based menu.
the compaq, having appeared to successfully repair itself, offers an "activation ID" to use over the phone to activate.
Here is the problem. Evidentally the dell cd must not jive with the compaq because it kicks back my "activation ID." Is there a way to talk with a person over there at Microsoft? Or does the owner simply have to buy another CD? Are there any other workarounds? Remember, we... Read more
First, let me say we will not assist with any type of software piration.
Dell disk should only be used on a Dell System. Compaq should have Restore Disk, if the user does not have them then they should contact Compaq so they can get them.
Other option would be to buy the OEM copy of XP. Using a Dell reinstallation disk is not recommended.
Also, the installation needs to match the COA sticker key, if it doesnt then it needs to be an OEM copy.

More repliesI installed dual boot vista home premium OEM on my XP Pro HP Turion tl-50 X2 Nvida 6150 2 GIG laptop. I am not sure about keeping it on this machine. I did enter the product key but did not activate it. Can I still put it on another machine as long as I don't let it to activate automatcally? I have one more day before it will activate.
Because you've never activated it, that license key isn't assigned to any computer, so as MajorDomo said above, it's still available for another PC.
I was cleaning & found an unopened package that contains my XP Pro SP2b English 1pk DSP CD,
can I activate this on a new/clean HD?

Settings -> Update & Security -> Activation
What did you do when it asked you for a product key during the installation?
I'm going to fit a bigger hard drive which will require a fresh XP install. The system components will be the same ones, apart from the new drive. Will the current saved wpa.bak & wpa.dbl files be acceptable to the XP activation still?
Depends on which parts of the PC the activation registers against and how many changes have been made since activation.I suggest you download XPinfo click here which will tell you much more.
10 more repliesHey guys, I wanna know if I didn't Activate my windows, what will happen ? Can I know please ?
I don't know but I wouldn't think so, I thought that the keys related to the version you have installed, or what you want to install.
8 more repliesIs there going to be anywhere to purchase a key for the RTM?? And no I don't mean Technet subscriptions where you have to pay $1000. How long is the RTM good for without a key?
You get a key when you buy the retail package. You can re-arm and use Win7 w/o a key for 90-120 days.
9 more repliesHI,I have just installed XP PRO but can't find the Activation anywhere. Usually under system tools but not there. Could it be that it got activated automatically during installation/set up. When Xp was installing I went away to amke a cup of tea. Any info much apprecaited.
BTW, updates have downloaded automatically and installed. Is this further evidence that it was activated w/o my knowing during the XP installation process?

It won't accept my old serial...is there a way to activate it? I thought retail (not OEM) versions could be transferred to a new build as long as they are removed from the previous build?
Actually, the way I had done it was wrong; I had used the ShowKeyPlus to reveal what was my original code and that was all wrong. Found the original serial and everything is fine, Windows activated :-)
more repliesmy friend has had to reinstall XP home, (oem )when he tried to activate it by internet, microsoft said it had exceeded the number ofactivations aloud, and he should use another key.does that mean he must buy another disc ?
To get another key, yes the only way to do so is to buy another disk. However - I am not aware that there is an "allowed number of activations" - just that too many within a period will necessitate you explaining why to MS.I think you friend should call them again and explain the situation, assuming there's a legitimate reason for an excess number of re-installs.

Got a pre installed copy of xp every 3 days it keeps asking me for the activation key, I go through the usual process phone Microsoft. I have changed the motherboard and added more Ram, new drives but the operating system is still the same. Now I think it might be either 3 things.
Faulty Ram
Cmos battery ( not sure on that one)
Software problem
When it is running I am also getting connectivity problems limited on no connection error. I am using the netgear wireless usb adapter which works fine I have tested it. But the software that comes with it wont run it runs in the background but I have no visual interface. Now here is the killer this pc is a emachines370 pile of **** hence the change in the motherboard but the copy of xp is legal which came pre installed. So the big question is can some body shed some light on this problem because I dont know how many times you can ring Microsoft.
Cheers Guys.

Actually, since you changed the motherboard, the XP license is no longer valid.

My daughter had to reinstall Vista, but she cannot get it activated. In the notification area, she is given choices, if she clicks,Activate over the internet, she gets an error window,Activate by phone, she gets a request to give numbers,In XP one can type in Run, oobe/msoobe /A, and a blue screenGives you the option as above, and if you choose by phoneYou get a line of numbers to tell Microsoft, by pressing them on your phone. She nor I know how to get to that screen in Vista. In Vista if you type oobe/msoobe /A it gives you the installation window
Vista click here (windows-vista-update.com)You can activate either online or by phone. To activate online you need an Internet connection. Activating by phone requires interacting with an automated phone system. To activate Windows on this computer, do the following: Open Windows Activation by clicking the Start button Picture of the Start button, clicking Computer, clicking Properties, and then clicking Click here to activate Windows now. Administrator permission required If you are prompted for an administrator password or confirmation, type the password or provide confirmation. You can then select the method you want to use to activate.Note If you chose to automatically activate Windows online when you set up your computer, automatic activation begins trying to activate your copy of Windows three days after you log on for the first time.Or is this what you mean/want?To check your Windows activation status, do the following:1. Open System by clicking the Start button Picture of the Start button, clicking Control Panel, clicking System and Maintenance, and then clicking System.2. Under Windows activation, you can view your activation status. You can also change your product key by clicking Change product key.

5 more repliesFirstly, if this has been answered in another thread, I apologise, although a search of the threads did not answer my query.
I have downloaded an installed from the Microsoft site this version of Win7 RC, which came out in early May to general release. It is the 32 bit version, and activated with a key from the Microsoft site.
My problem,
Every so often I get a nag saying that Windows needs activating, now I don't get a black background like in Vista, and the wallpaper/theme remains unchanged.
The advice the nag gives is to go to the download site, obtain a new key and enter it. This I have done 3-4 times now, but after a few days the nag reappears.
I know this is an RC version, unpaid for and all that, and that come June next year it going to crash itself every two hours, however, is it normal for the activation nag to keep occurring.?
If not, what can I do about it, other than to keep reentering a key every 3-4 days?

Have you actually Activated it yet?
You need to click on the the Activate now and let it go through to Microsoft etc.....
If you have done that....have you done anyting else...like removing the Watermark with a hack etc....this can cause problems with activation...
Windows XP is telling me it needs activation within the next 3 days for some reason. I have the XP product key but it when i enter the product key nothing happens. The product key is good. We even tried to load Windows 98 on one occasion and Windows 2000 but the pc would not accept those either with their respective proper product keys. Any ideas because it appears in 3 days i will be without a computer. Thanks
We called Microsoft and the person who helped us said " it is an IBM problem". Microsoft made sure we had the correct product key and the T40 wouldn't accept it. It just reverted back to XP and that pop up note that says activation required within 3 days. It's a T40-2373.

Currently am running win xp pro sp2. For the past few days everytime i start the machine and before the OS loads up, I see on the blue welcome screen it says " you have 7 days to activate the product. Do you wish to activate it now?" SO i clicked ok. and i got the activation screen where it said the product is already activated. However as next day it becomes 6 days and then 5 and now 4.
What can be done? What's wrong?
P.S. I have run a SP2 crack to activate windows.

I am upgrading a winxp dell laptop to win 7. The license is legit, I bought a new work system with a win 7 ultimate license and downgraded it to xp using my old xp license and wanted to use the win license to upgrade my home laptop, in effect swapping the licenses on both machines. I did a clean install on the home system, formatted the drive, the install appears to have gone correctly but never asked for the new license. When I try to enter the license manually it keeps telling me there is a problem and to call Microsoft and register over the phone. I would rather figure out what the problem is and get it corrected. I think the way I installed win 7 on my home system wasn't the best way to do it but at this point I'm not sure what the best next steps should be.
Thanks in advance for any help.

Hi there
didn't you get a prompt for W10 during the re-install process. Refuse that (say later) . Install W7 and activate . Now go to windows Update in control panel and you should see Windows 10 offered as an update.
When re-installing W7 WIPE all the partitions off the old W7 partition / HDD.

1. If i reformat the pc, changing none of the hardware will it require another activation?
2. What about hardware upgrades (with or without a reformat) will it refuse me?
3. I read the faq saying that officially only a mobo change would require a new liscence?
4. Can i install it on more then one hdd on the same pc?
1. If i reformat the pc, changing none of the hardware will it require another activation?
Yes. However, there is a trick where you can save your WPA info and copy it back onto the machine. Google = friend
2. What about hardware upgrades (with or without a reformat) will it refuse me?
You will have to reactivate if you swap out enough hardware. Adding something like a NIC won't force you to.
3. I read the faq saying that officially only a mobo change would require a new liscence?
If you purchase an OEM copy it is tied to the mobo of the computer you installed it on. If you purchased a retail copy this does not apply to you and you can reinstall it on other computers (one at time)
4. Can i install it on more then one hdd on the same pc?
Hmm, never thought of that, but I don't see why not since only one is active at any given time. The activation would allow it so I'd say yes.
I have been left a PC which has an illegal Windows XP Pro on it. I have now purchased a legal copy, but do not want to format and start again. Can I use the new activation code for my existing circumstance and make it a legal copy?
I would say no it wouldn't accept the valid activation key onto an illegal copy.

2 laptops, both have insider pro on - now updated to 10240
both requiring activation
I have full DVD of win7 & win 8 pro with licences
to activate the laptops, do I have to delete win 10, and go back to win 7/8 to get a licence??
or is there another way to translate the licences??
How long have you had the Insider builds running on the machines? If you've been an Insider for a while then 10240 should activate automatically, if you've recently installed an Insider build and updated to 10240 there's a chance it will not activate.
If you want RTM and opt out of being an Insider you would need to clean install W7 or 8.1 then run an in place upgrade either via Windows Updates or use the Windows 10 Download Tool to run from within your installed version of Windows.
I need to install my legaly bought version of windows on my computer however the disc is very badly scratched. What can i do? Can i use any windows XP pro cd and use my valid serial number? Will that work? Will it matter if the serial number was for a version before SP2?
Serial numbers work across all SP levels. Assuming it's the same type of XP, and the same type of license, your key will be fine.
I have imaged countless laptops over the years using PowerQuest Deploy Center, I have never ran into many issues untill lately, after imaging a few IBM X40 laptops running Windows XP and deploying that image onto other X40'S I can't get those machine to activate XP, I am using the correct key codes and still it tells me that the code is wrong, so I figured I would use the IBM restore option to bring the machine back to it's factory state and image the machine with an older X40 image that I know works, yet still even after restoring the older image I get the same error when I try to activate windows, what is causing this? why would it still have this problem even after restoring it back to factory and then re-imaging? could I re-run Sysprep?
I have a Desktop PC which I upgraded to Win10 with no problems. I also have a Laptop, HP ProBook which was also offered to upgrade to 10 which I did and gave to my daughter.
She attends University away from home, and I never had a chance to look at the laptop much. She graduated this week and came back home and I took a look at My/her laptop and found out, much to my surprise that Win10 never activated on it.
The original account, in which the previous Windows version was upgraded is still present on laptop, (my account), so I tried to activate from there and it was not possible.
The original license is no where to be found on the computer, i.e. sticker, but I do have the DVD to upgrade to Win 8.1 from Win 7 that came with it, which I never did.
I thought of using the credentials of the account in my desktop to create a new one in laptop, Microsoft account, but I am reluctant to do so, as I don't know how that would impact my desktop.
So my question is:
How to activate Win10 on laptop at this point?. If a reinstall Win 8.1 will it recuperate my previous license, (doubt it). Can I use the Microsoft account in my desktop on laptop at the same time and try to activate?.
Is there any other way to activate? Calling Microsoft maybe...
Thank you very much in advance for your sugestions

I only have about 15 days left before i loose control of my computer. Any idea guys?
Thanks for the help!
I REALLY need it!!

All you need to do is cal the telephone number on the activation screen and explain to the tech that answers the phone. depending on how good your explanation is will either get you a new authorization or a refusal. If refused they will sell you a new product ID for somewhere between $100.00 and $200.00 depends one what version of Windows you need.
This is the only thing that you can do.
hi
by what i understand if i do upgrade Microsoft stays with my id, later if i do a clean install i can activate.
so far so good
In case of laptops with windows 8 that key is on bios.
if i do a fresh install of windows 10 will i do the activation with no problems ?
In the case of the laptop you have to upgrade from a qualifying OS(7,8.1) then you can perform a clean instillation/activation.
