Unwanted symbol appearing over file thumbnails (Win 10 syst)

Question: Unwanted symbol appearing over file thumbnails (Win 10 syst)

Recently a symbol or "mini icon" has started to appearing over lower-left quadrant of file thumbs. It is a blue ~square with 2 horizontal white chevrons, ">>". They cover about 1/4 of each xLg photo icon/ thumbnail. I'd like to get rid of these pesky & unwanted mini-icons. A quick screen print of photo files, as thumbnails, is now useless because so much of each photo is obscured.

Preferred Solution: Unwanted symbol appearing over file thumbnails (Win 10 syst)

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Answer: Unwanted symbol appearing over file thumbnails (Win 10 syst)

Hi Davenjac, and welcome to TSG.

Are you running Norton360 or some other kind of backup software? It can be disabled in Norton 360's settings by unchecking the "Backup Status Indicators" check box.

Hi guys,

First of all I apologize if this is the wrong forum to post this in.

Just last night I started noticing a red no symbol appearing on my computer. It always appears in the same place, no matter what program I am using, and even if I am just sitting on my desktop.

I recently did a fresh install of Win 7 Pro (32 bit) but I didn't notice the problem immediately after that install. Is it some sort of virus?! I've never seen anything like it before.

I have attached pictures for reference.

Please help!

In all programs and files the currency unit for Korea \ keeps appearing in place of the '/'.

Through window's option for regional languages I set the computer to read Korean and be able to type in Korea (I am learning the language). Could this be causing my computer to keep freezing?

Also, CRT+ALT+DEL function no longer works and my computer completely freezes. I am unable to click on anything and manually shutting down is all I can do to get it back to 'normal'

The mark is called Pilcrow. See click here Clicking this button as ßeta says also shows other marks in a document, like tabs.Depending on the fonts you use, you can write this symbol from the character map, or pressing and holding the Alt key and typing 0182 at the same time.Skeletal

I just installed Windows 7 Home Premium x86 on a friend's laptop, and the thumbnails we've all grown to love are not appearing. When I hover the mouse over the task bar, a small menu appears, not the thumbnails of the page. Also, when I hover over the show desktop button in the corner, it does not preview the desktop. Is there a theme I am forgetting about? Why didn't I have this problem when I installed it on my desktop?

Oh, BTW, I also installed Win7 on another friend's laptop on Sunday, and the same thing happened.

Thanks in advance,
~Jonathan

Hi
As a senior computer illiterate who has come across the scene late, could any answers, Please, be addressed as to a child.
Running Windows 2000 quite satisfactory for some years thanks to my son. A 'friend' gave me Adobe CS2 a few weeks ago and boy have my troubles started. He also changed my monitor to Adobe rgb in the Gamma file - I think that's right - I PRESUME this package is the problem.
When I used to load up my pictures from my camera or scanner they are loaded in My Picture File. When that particular file was THEN opened, I saw the file numbers and proceed drop down the view icon hit Thumbnails and the pictures appeared. But not now.

Now. Until I go into a specific programme such as Photoshop and upload them I cannot 'see' them. Anyone have any ideas?
Thanks Ric

I've got a problem, a little different than I've seen posted. When I go ot view a folder of pics, the thumbnails all dutifully appear, then when they are done loading, all icons go back to generic Picture Viewer icons.

I've checked the "Show thumbnails", and "show icons instead of thumbnails", and they are all set right.

Any ideas as to why it resets the icon AFTER having loaded all of the thumbnails?

Answer:Thumbnails appearing then disappearing

Its because you are using Vista. Its the sad truth, it does that on all my systems to a greater or lesser extent as well, or even worse, it just does some, say a few dozen and stalls out.

Faststone Image Viewer does the trick, Irfanview thumbnails, Picasa also.

Just got my new/used laptop online, started installing all the "stuff" like
Firefox and all the security apps listed on this board - making a duplicate
of the setup on my desktop that's worked so well - thanks to the folks on
this site! I've got XP Pro sp2, latest Firefox and latest other app's listed
below.

Anyway, I've installed Firefox - so far so good, AVG Free and AVG Spyware,
Spyblocker and NoScript. Have also added things like Flash Player, Real Player,
Java console, etc.

Now, when I get on the internet in a variety of places, thumbnails and numerous icons don't show - i.e. when I get an email (thru Excite) instead of the thumbnail or the actual picture if it's embedded in the message, I get a small icon that I have to click on to open the picture, etc.

Another example is on eBay - none of the thumbnails and many other little things on any eBay page don't open - they also have to be clicked and opened on a separate page.

I've looked till I'm blue in the face and can't find any setting in anything that looks like it would fix that. i.e. on eBay, I made sure all the scripts are allowed, AdBlocker is turned off for eBay, etc. Looked thru all the Options on FireFox, can't find anything. I've got the same programs on my desktop but never did have that problem on it.

Appreciate any tips and where to look to turn off (or on?) whatever it is.

So a few days ago I started getting notifications from my norton AV saying it blocked an attempted attack by 'Trojan.Zbot'. Not too long after that I started to notice windows explorer acting very strange.

No thumbnails would appear for pictures..

No previews...

Couldn't empty recycling bin by right clicking it anymore

And also it would take longer than usual to load sometimes.

The weirdest thing is SOME thumbnails do show while 99% of them do not. You can see what I mean in the picture I attached.

Please help! I have no idea how to get rid of this Trojan.Zbot thing or if it's even the only culprit.

Answer:No thumbnails appearing... Might be infected with Trojan.Zbot. Help!

Run a full system scan with your A/V. Then run a full scan with Malwarebytes and/or Superantispyware. With admitedly little research it seems this infection may change some registry entries and those can be hard to "fix", so I would suggest a repair install after finishing those scans. Heres a link to a tutorial on how to do that if you haven't before : Repair Install

Hope this helps.

I found no solution in Windows Explorer's View menu, Options, and Help.

I would suspect it was due to me shutting down some 'process' or 'service' (2 weeks ago), but as far as I can see, all possibly-relevant processes and services are now running.

A related issue was raised by someone else and responded to by me here: Can't Rate Media in Explorer (Vista Home).

The only information found seems to indicate that this file may be a virus. What anti-virus do you have and is it current in its definitions?

BEFORE anyone says "google it" I have.. so many times..I've been frustrated with this issue for as long as I can remember. And it will take a bit of explaining for you to know what I mean, so I'm going to include some pictures to make it easier.

As you can see here, I have US English on the list (this is very tedious because I alt tab between my languages quickly and it takes up a considerable amount of time getting it off there every few hours) but it is NOT on the list of languages in the menu.:

It'll stay gone for a couple of hours, normally. But then it's back again (unfortunately).

As I said above, I've already tried researching this issue, and the only thing anyone has given that's had any effect at all is what I will show below:

I have even tried going into my regedit and changing the Substitute values, as someone else suggested so that it does not default to US English, but that only made regular UK English appear in the selection. See below:

I guess it will help if I say I purchased my OS in America with my custom PC and the language of my system is English, although I downloaded the pack for Russian and a few others.

If anyone's going to say "Well why don't you just use the US International on the English (US) setup?" it's because it does not change the fact that it will autocorrect words like "colour" and "aluminium" and tell me to reword my sentence strucutre and make it utterly confusing.... Read more

Hi,

I can't offer a lot here but i had a very similar issue (on both Windows 7 and Windows 8) it turned out to be my mouse software. You mentioned you are a PC gamer, what mouse do you have?

I have the 'Steelseries World of Warcraft Cataclysm MMO Gaming Mouse' and i started getting your issue soon after installing the mouse control panel, in all fairness i never fixed it... i just removed the mouse control panel as i no longer needed it to create/change macros.

I am planning on asking Steelseries support about it though.

Could it be that you have similar software installed? maybe just try removing it if you do then remove the language and see if it comes back.

Regards,
Jamie

Hi,

About 3 weeks ago our computer picked up a virus. We couldn't get rid of it so the computer was wiped & Vista re-installed. It's been working well until today.

All of a sudden what I believe to be hotkeys are appearing for no reason (e.g. you type "e" and the Computer dialog box opens. You can't type the letter "e" at all. As a matter of fact I'm typing this on a different computer as I can't use that one). I'd prefer to not have any hotkeys at all.

Will this disable the hotkeys and have my computer go back to the way it was until this morning?

I'm wondering, though, if we could've contracted another virus or if it's Gateway resetting certain things after the system was wiped.

Thank you.

Just got round to replacing kit with bright shiny Dell XPS under Win8, so please forgive me if this is posted in the wrong place or has been resolved here before.

I downloaded a printscreen app used before, from Cnet and, no doubt due to my incompetence, have also finished up with unwanted and persistent ads from mysearch.sweetpacks.com. It diverts from the display normally given when I hit the Internet Explorer button. WHATEVER YOU DO, DON'T CLICK ON IT.

Have uninstalled the prog through all apps, but it keeps coming back. Have also tried blocking cookies, etc. An Uninstall button is shown on the screen but I'm nervous about hitting that. Googling only reveals suggestions for installing other progs (more ads?) - which I ain't gonna do.

Your thoughts would be welcomed please.

Answer:Unwanted intrusions appearing. Help please!

If I remember correctly sweetpacks is added as a browser extension/addon. Disable and delete the addon. Run malwarebytes and adwcleaner and you should be good to go. I quit using cnet years ago when they started packaging everything in their installer.

Sometimes when I try to remove it, it doesn't work because it removes things like the google search bar and other forms, hence making the page unusable.

HiI'm trying to help out a friend who has been having problems with her machine. At the moment, her internet connection is intermittent, so I am posting on her behalf.A few weeks ago, her pc started to become noticeably slow when browsing. Typing into documents is excrutiatingly slow as is browsing. I used the advice given on here, and have got her to complete most if not all of the tasks required prior to posting. Hi, i use the random slide show when playing music to view all our family photo's....all was good until about a month ago, when slowly strange images appeared along with our pic's.

At first i thought they were graphics pic's from the tom tom software, or maybe the iphone, so i uninstalled both, but still the odd images appear....randomly.

When they appear i have right clicked to get pic details and they are not coming from my pics folder!

Has anyone any idea how i can make it look only in MY PICTURES? or what to do to resolve

Thanks in advance

Hello all, hope you can help. I 'look after' a Small Business Server 2003 machine, for a small business (unsurprisingly). We have about 10-15 laptop users who use the Offline Files system to synchronise various files and folders that they may work on away from the office.Problem is someone keeps synching very old versions of files and whole folders back onto the server that have been deleted or moved some time previously. These peticular folders are not ones that should be being used offline at all in the first place. I will delete these unwanted folders, only to see they have re-appeared the next day. 1) Is there a log somewhere that i can use to track down which user is doing this, and subsequently address this at the source?2) Can I change settings on selected sub folders so that they cannot be Made Available Offline, thereby stopping it from happening in future? Many thanks for any help you can offer me.

Hi, I was running an antivirus, and I noticed that some of the file descriptions on my laptop had what I think are Chinese symbols in them. should I be worried about this or is it normal?

one of the files was C:\Windows\Installer\16cd65.msp->#152TTo152U/(chinese symbol)InstallExecuteSequence there were more but I didn't manage to catch what they were, I took a photo of the screen that I can post if it helps but the symbol is probably to small to read.

It was over a week ago when this happened and I can remember if I was running 9labs removal tool or eset. I can't find a log for eset (I don't think it picked up anything) but here is the results for 9lab:

I've had the asian language pack installed on my laptop for awhile now and I know of a similar issue that involves the Korean won symbol, fortunately that never happened to me and I use my computer to type Korean frequently. I was attempting to get a program to run in Japanese to help out one of my friends, and after a restart; anywhere there's a file path it shows the ￥ instead of \.

I know there's no difference aside from appearance, but it's really annoying to look at it.

I've uninstalled the program and looked around the Regional and Language options, policy settings, and about anywhere I can think of, maybe I missed it somewhere, but I can't find a way to revert it. Can anyone help? Thanks.

Hello forum,

I have been trying to figure out how to change the status of a file that is present on network discovery on another computer.

I am just going through and assessing each file.

I notice the only person I really would like to share with is anyone that uses the external hard drive - much like the other files on the hard drive that do not have a lock on it.

I know that it may be basic - but I just want a work around for the few folders that I managed to see in computer management.

If someone could please give me a basic idea of what menu's to go into - I promise I will not change the behaviour of any folders.

Thank you.

Just basic steps -

As I am on a network/workgroup and do not want the homegroup - what is the best option.

Answer:How to remove the lock symbol on a file - no homegroup present

Hello Melissa,

The lock icon in Windows 7 indicates that the file or folder can only be accessed by you.

I'm running WindowsXP Professional on a Dell Latitude D600, and I recently swapped out my laptop base unit, due to a failure with the prior unit. I successfully swapped over all the peripherals from my old laptop unit (screen, drives, Wi-Fi, battery, etc.) and the laptop started up normally, with no problems.

While not a problem, I just now noticed that on Windows Explorer, under [file] Name column, I see that for everyone of the files listed, there a very small "green checkmark" or a "yellow exclamation mark" in the lower right-hand corner of the symbol that designates the file type (Word, Excel, PDF, etc.). I've never seen that under Windows Explorer before, working this laptop - or any computer for that matter.

Anybody have an explanation for the mysterious symbols that have shown up, all of a sudden? Thanks.

I am running Vista Home ... when in the folder I have my videos in I can see my .avi movies from my old HP dig cam but can not view the thumbnail of the newer .mov videos from my Kodak dig cam. This bugs me. I can play them in quicktime but would love to be able to see the thumbnail preview so sorting them would be a lot faster.

I've googled this and tried several things. Nothing has worked as of yet. Maybe I am not doing something right. I download and installed VLC and 3ivx. I do not want to change any .reg afraid I might mess something up. This machine is only 1 week old.

Someone please help me I don't know what else to do or where else to look.

Answer:Can't view .mov file thumbnails

As you may know, Windows Vista doesn't natively support mov files. VLC can play them, but its decoders are built-in and completely independent of Windows. 3ivx only decodes mov files (and mp4 files and 3gp files) encoded in MPEG-4 (it won't decode mov files in any other codec); not sure about its previewing capabilities.
What you would need is a filter (sometimes called splitter) to enable Windows (and Windows Media Player and Explorer etc.) to sparse mov files. The two most popular ones are Haali's and Gabest's filters. They're not perfect (have a few bugs - notably for mp4 and 3gp files) because they're third-party software, but they work for most files.
I believe Haali's filter is bundled with QuickTime Alternative, which you can get here:
http://www.codecguide.com/download_qt.htm
During installation it will propose to uninstall QuickTime, but that's not necessary. You can have QuickTime and QuickTime Alternative work side by side just fine.
As for Gabest's filter it's built-in Media Player Classic (also installed with QuickTime Alternative). I think you could download the filter alone somewhere in here
http://sourceforge.net/projects/guliverkli/
but I'm not sure how to install it and register it with Windows.

Here's a weird one, I have a WinXP PC, with a hidden system file in the root of C:\ that is approximately 8 bytes in size. The filename shows up as the following image:http://imgur.com/ywamEnr
Namely Unicode characters

U+2124, U+2122, U+2620
Double-Stroke Z, Trade Mark symbol, Skull and Crossbones.
I have no idea how it got there or what software created it, but it looks decidedly suspicious (although Symantec Endpoint Protection and Malwarebytes are detecting nothing).
Has anyone seen anything like this before?

Its been a long time since i tried this, So i cant identify what I did to cause it .

Trying to drag multiple .sut ( brush files ) into Art-App it belongs. From the File Explorer window. Was able to do this many times in the past.

I noticed something ; when I use the search engine called
" Everything " from its window interface, if I call up the files in that window, then I'm able to drag and drop the files from that window, directly into the Art app. But cant do it from the File explorer window like I was able to do before.

One suggestion, I read in the windows 7 forum, there might be some registry change that happened. But I dont know about such things, just wanted to suggest a idea. Anyone can help ?

Hi, I used this tutorial last year, it worked fine and then just a few months ago this happened.

Whenever I save or open a file, this is is what the pop-up menu looks like > link (the folder doesn't work too, but a while ago I restored the icons to default from the tutorial, and now it looks like this)

When I open it using windows explorer and Internet Explorer (ctrl+O) it works fine, but when I use Maxthon 3, Mozilla Firefox and Google Chrome it doesn't work. So maybe the problem isn't the browser, maybe it's the computer?
I don't know what happened, it's been months since like this and it's been annoying me (because I can't choose which to upload w/o seeing the thumbnail) so I tried different solutions found in the internet that DIDN'T work:
(I'm using Windows 7 Ultimate x64)uninstalling then re-installing the browser
going to folder and search options > view > unchecking "Always show icons, never thumbnails"
going to control panel > all control panel items > performance information and tools > adjust visual effects > checking "show thumbnails instead of icons"
going to computer > right click hard disk > properties > disk cleanup > checking "thumbnails" > clean up system files (this kind of messed up my thumbnails more)
I tried opening command prompt then type sfc /scannow but it stopped at 20% and said "Windows Resource Protection could not perform the requested operation."

Answer:No thumbnails in open/save file

Welcome to Seven Forums Cath.

First of all I don't understand how you are opening a folder with a browser?
Press the windows logo key + Pause Break to open System Properties and follow the diagram below to "For Cath" and check "Show Thumbnails Instead of Icons".

Thumbnail Previews - Enable or Disable

This may help too: Icon Cache - Rebuild

and

Thumbnail Cache - Clear and Reset
You may need to do a repair install since sfc /scannow won't run.

I have a movie archive. Each film and its poster image are in a different folder. So there are a lot of folders. Each folder has its image in it as thumbnail.Anyway, here is my problem:I want to copy all folder thumbnails, folder names and folder sizes to a file, for instance word, excel, image files...I know that it can performed with printscreen key, and paste a file. But, the folder window can not show all folders in a screen. Think that there are 1000 movie folders. We can see only first 30 folders of them in a screen.I need to print-screen all of them in one time, and paste it to a file.Or, get thumbnails, folder names and sizes as a list with a program. What do you offer me about it?Thanks in advance.Regards...

Answer:Copy folder thumbnails to a file

Yilmaz Ekici, never tried it so dunno for sure, but seems to me like you simply need to hilite the desired selections and 'copy to folder'. Multiple copies may take some time. What if you were to create a shortcut and put all the shortcuts in the same folder instead?HTH.Ed in Texas.

I frequently use disc cleanup and I would like to know if there is a way to make the job easier in regards to the thumbnails file.

Is there a way to make the size of the thumbnails file smaller so these files don't accumulate as much, or even better, is there a way to have Vista purge these files automatically so I don't have to do the disc cleanup method?

Thanks.

I have window 10 home.

I'm in the directory on my hard disk c:\
I can see maybe 2-3 thumbnails preview the rest are icons and i have like 400 items most of them thumbnails/images of some types: png jpg bmp.

My hard disk c: have 93.6 GB free out of 139 GB
And i tried already in the menu: View > Options > Change folder and search options > View and then unchecked Always show icons, never thumbnails. But it didn't help much.

I did new windows 10 clean install today and not yet installed new updates since there was no space on C: so i startec lean up some stuff and so far i have 93.6 GB free space. Maybe the problem is that i need first to install all the updates ?

I tried now to go drive D and same problem most of the images without preview.

Hello all,
I have what I consider to be a rather unique situation. I have recently been trying to restore an old, uncropped version of a file from about 10 years and about 3 computers ago, naturally impossible under general circumstances. However, the thumbnail for the file still shows the original version, while opening the image in windows media viewer or ms paint reveals that the file in fact contains the new version.

My query was since the thumbnail seems to be saving the original non-cropped version, has it kept a copy of the old file? If so, can the old version be opened so I can view it? I lack information about thumbnails to know whether this is possible or impossible.

Thanks for any assistance.

Answer:Viewing source file for thumbnails.

You would need a copy of the original file. A thumbnail is just a smaller version and does not contain this file. The best you could do is resize the image to whatever size is needed but the quality of the image would suffer.

As you can see, the file names are not there. What do i do to get filenames displayed under the folders like this?:

I have a feeling there's a simple solution for this...

Answer:Thumbnails don't display file names

Undo the thumbnail thing, so make it like icons.

Then (while holding shift), click it and make it thumbnails again.

Some of the thumbnails aren't showing up windows explorer even though they are the same file type. There will be 12 episodes of a show in .AVI or .MKV, and only 9 will have thumbnails, the other 3 don't. I have the Haali Media Splitter on to show thumbnails and I installed the Windows Service Pack to to it too (not sure which one is actually working, if I had to guess I'd say it's Haali).

To enable the thumbnails on Haali Media Splitter I click it, the went: options → explorer integration → show thumbnails (yes) → thumbnails offset (10000)

Not sure what is wrong...can anyone help?

And this is a problem with pretty much all the file types, some thumbnails showing and some not when they're in the same folder and I got them from the same source (all the files in a folder are either AVI or MKV, but the problem happens with both)

Recently I downloaded a file converter which, after installation, associated all my video files with itself. Previous to downloading this programme my .avi, .mkv files etc were all displayed simply as an icon, yet now they are all displayed as a thumbnail picture. The only solution I have found for reverting my video files back to being displayed simply as an icon is via Folder Options, 'Always show icons, never thumbnails'. However, selecting this option also disables the thumbnail preview for my .jpeg and other image files. Is there any way to disable my video files being displayed with a thumbnail whilst keeping the thumbnail preview for images? Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Hi...

I'm an new user to Photoshop CS(Windows) ... I find that in the file browser (I'm looking at RAW images) ... SOME images do not have thumbnails desplayed ... only a generic ICON ... this is maybe 15% of the images...

.... if I select one of these images I can see it in the preview window, and I can open it into Photoshop (via the Camera Raw plug-in) ... but I can't see a thumbnail in the main browsing window ...

... this makes it very difficult to select images for further editing...

... if you know how to correct this problem, or know what the cause might be, please let me know.

Thanks, Peubear

Hi,
I know there are some threads about this. but I couldn't solve my problem using those. so I decided to make a new thread instead of bumping the old ones.
Well, Here is my problem:
recently I installed a fresh copy of windows 8 on my PC. it was nothing wrong with it till I installed Kaspersky Endpoint Security 10 (v. 10.1.0.867) & did a reboot.
Now non of my files including picture, audio & video files show thumbnails or even tags (ex mp3 files).
I've tried the solutions stated about turning thumbnails on & off with no luck. in my folder options the option "Always show icons, never thumbnails" is UNCHECKED.

Has anybody faced the problem?? Is the issue from Kaspersky?? Are there any workarounds??

I truly Appreciate any help.

PS. I also have some difficulties pinning folders to windows explorer taskbar icon since then.

Hi everyone,

I have used a bunch of tutorials from this site over the last few years and never joined up. However, I am infuriated at windows 7 not letting me get my own way with custom icons! Infuriated enough to sign up.

All I wanted was a custom folders icon (for ALL folders) which can be done easy enough, but the catch 22, in order to do this properly, one must turn off thumbnails (organise > folder options > view > always show icons, never thumbnails).

This means you end up with a window with a couple of hundred identical jpeg/png/whatever icons... not very useful when you need a quick overview of contained images within the folder.

So, we turn the thumbnails back on, ah thats better, we can quickly see our images again! Oh wait, those disgusting yellow overlayed thumbnail folders are back!

There needs to be another option in windows 7:

Always show icons (folders only), show file thumbnails

Would be great but I can't find any way to achieve this. Even iconpackager can't do this and I bloody bought it! All that happens is that you end up with your nice custom icon, with a little bit of photo thumbnail sticking out the bottom of it, so you have to 'always show icons, never thumbnails'... well that was a waste of money!

I would install linux instead if it were more useful, changing ALL icons is easy and makes sense in that, and takes about 5mins! I have a lovely custom theme, of course, let down by those yellow folder icons that make me want to puke!

Hi

I'm not talking about PSD files here, just jpgs and other "regular" image formats. I have no problems with seeing thumbnails by default in any other software's File Open dialogs other than Photoshop (CS4 in my case). No matter what I have tried in Folder Options (yadda yadda) PS CS4 refuses to display thumbnails unless I manually choose "Icons" from the view menu once I am in the dialog. (Ideally I'd like it to automatically display Extra Large Icons.) This is driving me nuts as I work on jpg photos all day and every day. Sure I can use Bridge, but it is SO slow, or something else, but someone out there must have a fix? I can't see anything obvious in the Adobe areas of the registry and don't know enough about it to hack it myself. Grateful for any help!

I realize you can use Libraries to get thumbnails, but that's about as many clicks (or more) than File>Open>View>Ex Large thumbnails ... every single time!!

I am using Win7 x64, Photoshop CS4 x86

I know that if in Folder Options I choose "Always show icons, never thumbnails' the '.thumbs' file stops being created everytime you view an image file in Explorer. But I do want to see thumbnails, or more specifically I like the idea of viewing the image of the *.jpg, *.dng etc. when in Explorer. However, what I don't like is getting a '.thumbs' file being created.
I'm sure it is possible to have one without the other but can't recall how to do so.
Thank you

Answer:Viewing thumbnails as images but without .thumbs file

In Windows Explorer [Win7 and earlier] go to Organize, Folder and Search Options, View tab and the first item Files and Folders and uncheck the first thing about Always show icons, never thumbnails. At least that is what works with my Win7 Ult. But then I use the Extra Large Icons view for pictures and don't get the .thumbs part.

Hi, I have a Windows Vista and I'd like all file types from all Media players to display a thumbnail of the video in Windows Explorer as opposed to just showing an icon of the file type. The problem is that in Vista, it only shows thumbnails of Windows Media Player videos and not videos that use VLC Media Player (except .VOB which it does show) or Quicktime. I've done some research online and I've seen that I need to merge a Registry file into the Registry Editor with certain Registry keys in it, so I tried doing it for .MP4 files:
----------------------------------------------------------
Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00

[HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\.mp4\shellex]
[HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\.mp4\shellex\{3D1975AF-0FC3-463d-8965-4DC6B5A840F4}]
@=""
[HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\.mp4\shellex\{BB2E617C-0920-11d1-9A0B-00C04FC2D6C1}]
@="{c5a40261-cd64-4ccf-84cb-c394da41d590}"
[HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\.mp4\shellex\{E357FCCD-A995-4576-B01F-234630154E96}]
@="{9DBD2C50-62AD-11D0-B806-00C04FD706EC}"
----------------------------------------------------------
After I entered the above into the Registry I restarted my PC, and nothing happened, the .MP4 videos still show no thumbnails.

Any suggestions or help is welcome and thanked in advance!

Thank you.

When you right click on the folder itself and select properties, there is a tab called customise. In this tab you can select what type of folder you want and choose Pictures. You can have this cascade down to subfolders as well. As for the other settings you mentioned, I usually keep my folder settings as the defaults.

I've been googling around but can't seem to find an answer to this seemingly simple question. The documents and spreadsheets on my desktop show up as a thumbnail preview of the file (which is kinda stupid because all of the documents and spreadsheets look the exact same). So I want these to just show the Word or Excel icon instead. I know you can go to:

Explorer>Tools>Folder Option>View>Files and Folders>"Always show icons, never thumbnails"

But then my picture files just show the Windows Picture Viewer icon instead of the picture thumbnail. I'm just wondering if there's a way to assign icon or thumbnail settings to specific file types or extensions? I'd like my pictures to have thumbnails but all other file types to show only icons. I'm currently using Windows 7 and system details are in the sig...

Answer:(Win7) How to show icons for some file types and thumbnails for others?

If you don't explicitly tell Word or Excel to save a thunbmail of the file along with the file, it will use the default Word/Excel document icon (which happens to look like a document from either of those programs). Can't you just change the default icon to something else?

To answer your question, though, no, I don't think it's possible.

Previously this was just a minor annoyance but now I need a fix. In many of my folders I am missing file names for my files when they're viewed in Thumbnail mode. I have no idea what's causing this to happen, and I've looked everywhere I can think of for a fix.

Can anyone point me to a solution?

I guess I'm not able to delete my thread so I'll edit to post the solution instead. It's a result from holding shift while opening a folder in Thumbnail mode. To correct the missing file names I simply had to hold shift while opening the folder for a second time. Annoying.
