Modern apps not connecting to internet, desktop apps work fine.

Question: Modern apps not connecting to internet, desktop apps work fine.

Hi,

As the post title suggests, I am having trouble with the modern apps and connectivity. It feels like half my computer will connect to the internet, and the other half won't. Desktop apps like Chrome, Steam, Outlook, iTunes etc. all connect to the internet fine, but any of the Windows apps like Xbox, Store and (most frustratingly) Settings will not connect.

In my network and sharing centre in the control panel it says 'You are not connected to any networks' - but in the system tray, and in the settings app it shows me as connected to my home wi-fi. I am on a desktop, and using a USB wireless adapter. I don't think the adapter is the problem as I have tried it on another desktop in our house on Windows 10 and it worked fine. Curiously also, when I click 'Adapter settings' in the control panel, it shows the wifi connection.

I've tried updating the drivers for the wireless adapter, both through the Windows update and adapter website but to no avail (and as I mentioned, it seems the adapter works fine elsewhere). I've updated manually to the latest Windows 10 Pro build, i've done a DNS flush, I've tried disabling firewalls and anti-virus, I've tried disabling startup apps, I've done a clean install of Windows 10 and still am unable to fix the issue.

If anyone has any ideas that might help that would be great. I'm happy to provide any more information if people need it.

Thanks very much.

Preferred Solution: Modern apps not connecting to internet, desktop apps work fine.

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

I installed many apps locker they all work fine but I can still access apps from the all apps list.

Answer:My apps locker work fine but apps can be accessed from the all apps list, how can I prevent this?

Yes. There is no such thing as a real app locker app in Windows Phones. This is because third party apps are not allowed to interact or interfere with other third party apps due to Windows Phone Sandboxing technology.
If the developer was careful with his app, he or she would have indicated the limitations of the "app locker" he created in the app description. Otherwise, if there is no such disclaimer about the limitations of the app in the app description, the user is encouraged to report the app to Microsoft as a fraudulent or misleading app.

Hi all,

I offten play game online, and my network is not fast. So when I playing game, it's usually "lag". I think it is because the modern apps (mail, people, weather...) and other background services auto connect to internet. I can stop or turn off these background services, but I don't know how to turn off or prevent modern apps do that to improve the network speed. So I really need your help.

I'm really confused and I'm trying to work out why I would want to use tablet mode, apart from the minimize, maximize and "x" buttons found in desktop mode. Aren't the modern apps that you can launch straight from the start menu in desktop mode, exactly the same as the ones in tablet mode?
I hope to hear back soon

yes .. but in tablet mode they open in full screen

I'm having a maddening issue that I'm having trouble finding any information on... A lot of modern style Windows 8 apps are refusing to connect to specific services.
A couple of examples:
MetroTwit - The app opens and offers a "Sign in with a Twitter account" button. Clicking the button shows the app attempting to connect to twitter, then it goes back to the button.
Pulse - A news reading app, asks me to sign in with Facebook, but the button does nothing.
Cumulo - An app designed to connect to various cloud storage providers. It asks me to add services, but clicking any of the options yields no results.
Zipwhip - An app to sync SMS messages with my Android phone. Live tile and notifications work fine. Opening the app shows up-to-date information, but information will not update while I am inside the app.
News Bento - News reading app, works flawlessly. However choosing the option of signing in to Facebook or Google reader does exactly nothing.

At first I thought these may have been issues with the individual apps, but I have more examples than I've listed here, so the problem is widespread. A pattern seems to be emerging which makes it look like a security setting somewhere is messing things up, but I don't know where to look.
Mail, People and Calendars work fine. UAC is enabled. I've also run the app troubleshooter (AppsDiagnostic.diagcab) linked from this Microsoft article with no success. This has been going on for a while now, and I'm anxious to get it solved, ... Read more

I recently had an odd Trojan horse and, while it seems to have been sorted, some damage has been done in it's wake.

For some reason I cannot use any Metro apps. Windows Store says there is no internet connection, Cortana says it cannot connect, Edge closes as soon as it is opened... You get the idea. Practically every Metro app is behaving like this and yet my internet connection is just fine outside of Metro apps.

I'm not sure what to do here, I've tried a few different fixes for similar problems but nothing has helped. I did recently install Malware Bytes and Panda to clean up my system and everything was working before then (besides the obvious adware) so my guess is some sort of setting has gotten swept up in the search for dangerous files?

Could anyone offer me any help/insight here? I get lonely without Cortana.

Answer:"Modern" apps cannot connect to internet but all other apps can.

Hi CaptainBritish

Interesting. In your title you mention other apps can access internet but Edge closes on start. What apps do work.?

First I would shut down Windows completely by holding down shift key and clicking shutdown (not restart)

If you are absolutely sure that the bugs are gone there are several troubleshooters and a reset that may help.

Start => Setting => Network and Internet.

On the right hand side scroll all the way down to bottom where you will see Network reset. This will cause you to loose your stored wireless password.

I would also run these commands commands at Command Prompt(admin). Don't enter stuff in brackets, this is what the command does.

ipconfig /flushdns (Clear the dns cache)
nbtstat -RR (release and refresh NetBIOS names)
netsh int ip reset (reset ip settings)
netsh winsock reset (Reset Winsock Catalog)
To gain access to trouble shooters

Right click start, Click Control Panel, click System and Security, under Security and Maintenance tab, Trouble shoot common problems. When Window opens click on View all, over to the left in navigation pane.

Hello. I install Windows to vhdx in hyper-v. I make two users, make some updates and install some apps. I make sysprep and copy vhdx to another PC and boot from this.
After this, start menu does not work. i can not tun no modern apps, and Notifications panel does not works too.
when i make new user, all works fine. I need to make this work for the already created User.

Can anybody help me how make sysprep and it works with existing user?
Thanks

Answer:Modern apps after sysprep does not work

Hi Kay, welcome to the Ten Forums.

Please explain how do you create the users? Do you boot Windows to Audit Mode with the built-in admin account before creating any user accounts, create the users in answer file and then sysprep, or do you install Windows normally, boot to desktop, create your users and then sysprep in Windows normal mode?

Let's start with that.

Hello,

I am a developer and also Windows user and curious about some things. From reading this forum, I think the nice knowledgeable people here will be able to help!

Are Modern UI apps truly sandboxed? If so, how will system apps like A/V, Firewalls, and others work from a sandboxed environment?

Can system apps from the Old Desktop scan and check things related to Modern UI apps?

I am trying to find out how much Modern UI apps and Desktop apps can communicate and coexist. Also, when the old desktop apps go away (if it goes away), how Modern UI apps will deal with System Applications.

Modern UI apps seem like WPF apps to me with an XML style interface and code behind with a new framework for the tiles. Is that correct?

Thanks!

you should browse the "Building Windows 8 Apps with C# and XAML" book by Jeremy Likness. he gives a good description of what's happening.

Hello, something like that will have a cause. I've never experienced it- but I've not upgraded to the FCU.

There's no detail in your specs. Could you please fill them in including details of your disk (see mine for comparison)?

What is your actual build number?
(Windows key + X, winver)

Please post a screenshot of your Update History.
to post a screenshot please use the Insert Image icon to the left of the video icon above your post

Try these basic steps:
1. Please check your disk. Download and install Hard Disk Sentinel (trial) and post a screenshot of its GUI

2. Check your file system
From an admin command prompt
[Windows key + X, click command prompt (admin)]
chkdsk C: /F
Your PC will need to restart.
Post back the result, which you can get after a restart as follows:
How do I see the results of a CHKDSK that ran on boot? - Ask Leo!
Make sure the result is clear or fixed- else do not proceed.

3. From an admin prompt run
SFC /SCANNOW
and post the result

4. Do you have System restore enabled, and do you have any usable restore points?

What was the last event or change made that you know of before this started happening?

Just got a Surface 3 and was re-reminded of the crazy-to-me disconnect between Modern and Desktop versions of MS apps: Made some preference changes to OneNote (desktop) assuming I would find them when using OneNote (Modern).
Is it safe to assume that the Modern/Desktop dual versions of apps will be eliminated in W10?

Answer:Windows 10 and Modern versus Desktop versions of apps

The short answer is yes; the eventual plan is Universal Windows Platform apps would be how apps are built in the future. The long answer is it may take a bit of time for all apps to make the full transition. However, the way all apps interact and behave will be more consistent than it was in 8.1.

Hi guys, hope someone can fix this:Lenovo Thinkpad R500 - Touchpad scroll works in Internet Explorer, Firefox, File Explorer, Device manager, Help and some other places, but it does not work in Start menu or any menu under Control panel, Edge or Windows Store - no matter what I have tried it simply will not Scroll - There is no doubt this a BUG.Is there a solution or Fixit for this odd behaviour?I'm guessing without really knowing it, that most of the user interface windows like Store and Control panel and Start menu is linked to Edge and that is the one having the bug. Like some linux distro's have chromium integrated and if removed it crashes because that is the Graphic Engine that runs it all.Hope someone can answer this cause it driving me nuts!Touchpad/Trackpoint: ALPS UltraNav 2 - Ihave the newest driver from lenovo an ALPS don't have driver download available. Answer:Windows 10 Touchpad scroll problem - work in Firefox but not Edge or modern apps

Hi Insomniac1971,

Welcome to Lenovo Forums!

Do you know which touchpad hardware you have example: Synaptics or Elantech?

Also try to uninstall and reinstall the current touchpad drivers (via Device manager in control panel) and reboot the machine, this may also help you to get your touchpad scroll work again.

After a reboot, just start checking for updates from windows update to start download and installation of the updated drivers.

Please let me know, whether the above steps helped you.
Thank you, Have a good day.

I have a Lenovo Yoga Tablet 2-1051F running Windows 10. I have a number of modern apps that refuse to open unless I am actively connected to the internet. Desktop (or legacy) apps open fine in airplane mode, but anything downloaded from the Windows Store will not. This even includes built-in apps such as calculator (?).

So far, I have tried:

1. running "sfc /scannow" in Command Prompt
2. running "WSReset.exe"
3. updating all drivers from lenovo

I also spent the better part of yesterday afternoon chatting with Contact Support, who at various points told me that the tablet was designed to work that way (um, no), that no Windows apps will open without internet connection (false), or simply ended the chat when it seemed like they were in over their heads.

has anyone else noticed this problem? I have tried to recreate it on my desktop (also running Windows 10) by unplugging my ethernet cable and then opening various apps, and it functions as expected - they will open and perform everything normally, unless specifically needing the internet.

Don't get me wrong, I understand that certain apps require Internet Access (Hulu or Netflix come to mind). However, for even calculator to not open without internet seems wrong.

Please let me know if i left any other pertinent information out!

Thanks!

Really weird problem here. For some reason, some app links won't launch from Objectdock or Rocketdock, yet others will. The only thing they have in common is that they're either Microsoft programs like Freecell or Snipping Tool, or programs that are used to modify Windows like Classic Shell Explorer and Start Menu Customizer.

At the same time, other MS programs like Media Player, and 3rd-party tweaking apps like Ultimate Windows Tweaker, work launch just fine with both docks.

This issue is only happening in the docks. The Start Menu and Explorer will load these programs normally. I'm using Windows 7 Home Premium 64bit.

Like I said, weird. Any ideas?

Thanks

Answer:Some apps won't work in Objectdock/Rocketdock, fine in Start Menu

With the Snipping tool I had to use
C:\Windows\Sysnative\SnippingTool.exe as the link to it.

Running Windows 8.1. Have admittedly modified it quite heavily but perhaps someone could point me to the root of what I have screwed up.

Pretty much, any apps which have the purple wheel splash screen do not load (presumably crash). Normal windows settings work fine. Windows applications and Metro apps works with no hitches (I have none downloaded but default Music, Games all start with no issues).

Much appreciate any suggestions.

When I set default storage space to SD card, the apps doesn't get installed, and same is the case when the apps are moved from phone to SD card in Lumia 535.
Checked for OS updates, but is of no use.
Any solution, please help out

Answer:Why the apps doesn't work when the apps are moved to SD card in lumia 535?

Did you make a soft reset? Just press volume down + power button for 10 seconds and it will reboot.
Another option you have is install the apps manually, via .xap files
If anything else fails maybe a hard reset is needed but that would erase everything in your phone.

Hi there

If you want to pin Metro apps / standard apps to desktop / create a custom toolbar with these as CASACADABLE items it's fairly simple.

I made a post way back in W8.1 about this --method still works - no reg hacks, XAML knowledge etc needed.

http://www.eightforums.com/general-s...tml#post390324

If you want your OWN icons use this little FREE program (ICOFX) to create the .ico files.

http://filehippo.com/download_icofx/6890/
While the ALL apps idea in the previous thread is a good idea I like the idea of customising it een more -- I find the custom toolbar best for me with a few pgms pinned to desktop and quick launch taskbar.

I've tried lots of methods trying to fix it, including WSReset.exe, ran Microsoft's Modern UI App troubleshooter and running internet connections troubleshooter. The last thing I want to do is refresh the PC.

Also, this is my first post, so i'm sorry if I posted in the wrong spot or didn't include stuff you need.

press enter.

When its done type exit and press enter

My Top Ten reasons Store Apps are preferred over Desktop Apps
I know what you're thinking. How can a store app be better than a desktop app? Well, the title doesn't say "better", it says "preferred". Read the list, and I'm sure you'll get an idea of the difference I'm talking about.
10. A store app has the capability to do everything a desktop app can do, IF the app developer works at it.
9. Universal Windows Apps are safer. They are obtained by using the Store, and you don't have to worry about viruses from the store apps.
8. Store apps do not slow down your system over time the way Desktop Apps can. They don't use the registry, and don't leave behind traces of files that never get cleaned up like many bad behaved desktop apps do. Reinstalling the OS every year can be a thing of the past.
7. Uninstalling a store app leaves NO traces behind and no clutter in your registry. It uninstalls everything contained it the sandbox for that app. Cleaner uninstall. With Desktop apps, you have to use a 3rd party program to track down and eliminate the traces, and sometimes accidentally kill files that other programs were dependent upon.
6. New Universal Apps for Windows 10 can scale to different screen sizes, resolutions, and DPI better. Desktop apps often become unreadable or unmanageable when attempting to scale to different DPI settings, and often the text on buttons will be cut-off or displayed incorrectly.
5. You can use the input of your choice using Universal Windows Apps. Apps b... Read more

Summary: Vista64, working flawlessly for over two full months, now all of a sudden apps are giving me "unable to create socket" errors. But IE works fine!

Yesterday morning my ISP must have been having some sort of DHCP problem but it only lasted for an hour or two. Thing is, when everything was back to normal, Firefox wouldn't work. It can't resolve any addresses it says. So I opened IE, and pages loaded fine. Firefox in addition to not loading pages, also crashes when I close it. I open Thunderbird, it starts crashing too. I open Spybot S&D, try to update definitions, it says "Unable to create socket." I open mIRC to see if my irc buddies can help, it says "unable to create socket". GAIM errors with "Couldn't connect to host.

WTF is going on.

Sounds like your TCP/IP protocol stack became corrupted. Try to uninstall your ethernet adapter, reboot. Also, try to remove the IPv6 stack, by unchecking it under LAN properties.

We have a new Windows 8 Computer with a new problem.  The apps on the start tiles tell us that they cannot connect to the internet -- no mail, no Windows store, no skydrive.  I have tried running the Microsoft app troubleshooter and even refreshed my PC (big mistake) with no success.  Help please!

Answer:Windows 8 -- Apps Not Connecting to Internet

As a follow up to this post, I downloaded Fiddler 4 and that fixed the problem on most of my apps.  But not all -- my ESPN app still will not connect to the internet.  And, more annoyingly, the exceptions only work when Fiddler is open -- if I close it, my apps again say they can't connect to the internet.

Hello. I recently upgraded my Inspiron 17R laptop, that is around 1 year old, from Windows 7 to Windows 8. At first, everything worked, I was able to go through every app have them work, but then Action Center told me that I needed to select a program to set up my firewall and antivirus protection. I selected McAfee for each, having a valid subscription. My apps didn't work then, and I thought it was McAfee. I went through McAfee and turned the firewall off, but they app still didn't work. I then uninstalled it in hoping that it would be fixed, but it didn't. I don't know if this affects it, but I switched email accounts for the profile on my computer. Are there any known programs that I may have that prevent the apps from accessing the internet or anything simple I can do to fix the problem?

(I am unable to access Mail, Calender, People, Messaging, Store, Maps, Skydrive, and Games. I can't connect to my xbox live account either through the Minesweeper app, even though i can connect through google chrome. The apps either open and stay at a white screen or load indefinetly.)

Answer:Problems with Metro Apps connecting to the Internet

Hi thelonster, welcome to the forums, try uninstalling the graphics driver and re-install it or get the latest driver if available and install and see whether it fixes the problem.

I am reading everywhere that Windows 8 is not being very successful by now, but the big thing with Windows 8 is Modern UI and the whole new ecosystem of apps, market and interface.

And I still don't know how much are Windows 8 users using all of it.

For instance, I never use Modern UI at all. I never check the app market, never install apps, never use them...

What about you?

*NOTE: NEVER also means RARELY, too little use to being called occasional use.

I wanted to change the survey but the system won't allow it. So please take it for NEVER or RARELY.

Answer:So, do you use W8 Modern UI apps?

I never use 'em, and I'm not likely to.

Just how do universal apps fit in with desktop apps and the cloud?
One developer said he didn't want to make a slightly dumbed
down universal version that had only a minimal advantage in that it
could also be used on a phone. It seems to me that developers are better off developing a full desktop app which can run on PCs and tablets. Where is the value in developing for the phone which has only a 3% market share? When you consider that you could run
a full desktop version on a phone via the cloud and continuum, the
usefulness of a universal app seems even less.
To make universal apps worthwhile they need to have the functionality
of the desktop version or else very very close. Is that possible?
I can see that having universal apps allows you to run Office, for
instance, without the cloud; is that enough to make them worthwhile?

Hi,

I've been struggling with this problem for a few days now. The problem is that I do NOT have internet access for firefox/chrome/dropbox/etc but i DO have internet access for IE and certain OS apps (like Network Troubleshooter). I've read and tried most of the typical solutions with no avail.

What I've Tried:
Safemode with Networking - same situation, I can use IE but not Firefox/Chrome/etc
Reseting Winsock (netsh winsock reset, etc) - didn't work, possibly just made matters worse?
Flushing DNS (ipconfig /flushdns, etc)
I do NOT have a special proxy, and neither firefox, nor chrome, nor IE are trying to use one
I have added exceptions in Windows Firewall, then just straight up disabled the firewall
I have Avira antivirus, but it does not contain any firewall features and no place that I can see to add any such exception
LSP-Fix.exe (I tried to fix the LSP registery, it found 1 problem from leftover Bonjour dll, and I've repaired it but its changed nothing)
I ran quick-scan on malwarebytes - found nothing
I ran checkdisk and found no errors
I have no system restore point
Also, with firefox, I hve tried it in safe-mode and created a new profile, but that hasn't changed anything. When I try to make a connection with firebug open, it says the request was "aborted"

Because native Microsoft software (IE, OS software) has no problem connecting to the internet, I'm just trying to figure out what bridge was burned between firefox/ch... Read more

Answer:Solved: Internet works for IE and OS apps, NOT for firefox or 3rd party apps

Ok, so literally nothing was working - I did a "Repair Install" using my windows 7 cd. It took 2 hours, but when it finished up all of my networking was working So, for those of you who are having similar issues, as a last resort I'd give that a shot. Definitely read a few articles about what is required to successfully perform a Repair Install, as you don't want anything going wrong during that process.

Hi,

I'm wondering if someone could help with a problem I have with some apps on windows 8.

When I click on an app, for example the weather or sports app I get a message on the screen to say "you are not connected to the internet, please check your internet connection", however I am connected to the internet and can use some of the other apps fine.

I have done the following:

Checked firewall settings, the apps in question are set to allow through the firewall with both public and private ticked.

AV is AVG however I have refreshed my PC and the problem occurs without AVG installed.

Logged in as another windows user, same problem occurs.

Uninstalled/reinstalled the problem apps, same problem occurs.

The only thing I can think of is a complete reinstall of windows but just wanted to put the question out there in case there is something else that I can try.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Kevin

I don't understand why Microsoft requires UAC to be enabled for me to use any Modern Apps or the App Store. I always turn off UAC and one of the programs I use, Object Rexx from IBM does not run correctly with UAC enabled. I find the UAC prompts intrusive and extremely annoying and as far as I'm concerned UAC is a total waste as after a very short period of time it becomes automatic to click OK without even reading the UAC notice.

Anyone know what the rational for this is? Is there a workaround for it? I'd like to play with some of the Apps but I'm not going to enable UAC to do it.

Answer:Why does UAC have to be enabled to use any Modern Apps

Hey Rich,

When UAC is disabled, the account basically runs elevated. Modern apps will not run in an elevated account by design for security purposes.

About all you can do is set your UAC settings to the bottom level.

I've been using Win 8 RTM for a while now (and the CP, RP etc before that) and I've realized there are very few decent Metro apps.

There are some nice apps for things like news, weather, and esp games. Some really well designed ones like 'The Big Picture', but a bunch of apps I thought I'd like, such as Kindle, aren't really good. The website/desktop version works much better, doesn't disrupt my flow, and has more options. Apps like Newegg are obviously a total waste on a pc.

Metro is just a nuisance in the end, and its best to keep it out of the way as much as possible. I've tried giving it a fair use, it just isn't productive or have anything of value.

Answer:Do you use Metro/Modern apps on Win 8?

I love the metro remote desktop app. Tabs to switch clients? Its about time!

Is there a awy to make it so Windows 8.1 does not show any of the Modern Apps in the taskbar?

For instance, I like to keep NotePad8, Weather and some others running, but I don't want them taking up Taskbar realestate since (as far as I'm aware at least), those Modern apps will remain open until I close them for good by moving to the upper left part of the screen.

So, if anyone knows of any methods I could try to do this, I would be all ears! I suspect there's probably something I could do in the registry, and if there is, maybe someone could attach a .reg file for me.

I'm also attaching a screencap of what I'm talking about.

Thanks a lot, everyone!

When I first got Windows 8, I was like a kid in a candy store downloading way too many modern apps. Many of these early modern apps are no longer working. Another side effect is that newly installed modern apps no longer have tiles created on the modern desktop as if these is no more space available.

I want to clean up these obsolete apps en mass. I want them off my machine and off of my list of modern apps attached to my Microsoft-ID so they don't reappear.

I am willing to have ALL of my modern apps removed, and reset to only those that come preinstalled. I am more mature and believe I can use more discretion on modern apps I download moving forward.

Answer:How can I cleanup my modern apps to only preinstalled?

You could try this, has worked for me. I am not sure if this script will remove third party apps, I have used it to remove some default apps. Anyway, worth a try.

Download the uninstall script from Microsoft TechNet: https://gallery.technet.microsoft.co...-Apps-a00ef4a4Follow the instructions on that page to remove the apps you want to get rid of

I've got a very strange issue which I can't see anywhere else on this site. Basically sound works perfectly fine in the desktop and all legacy apps however there is no sound at all in any metro apps. Skype/ IE 10/ Xbox music/ games all have no sound.

My sound in all apps (modern and legacy) has been working fine up until 2 days ago. I've checked any recent updates and I don't see any in the last few days that could have changed this. I haven't installed any drivers or changed any setting in the last few days either. I really don't understand how this could have happened.

I've noticed that when playing a song in Xbox music, it comes up along the bottom bar as playing but when pressing the volume buttons, it does not show the artist and play/skip controls like it used to. Also, interestingly, modern Skype will not connect to my webcam and neither will the modern camera app. This started happening at the same time as the sound stopped working, so I'm pretty sure they're connected in some way. It's as if the modern part of the UI is not able to connect to my speakers and my webcam. Webcam works fine in desktop Skype.

I've tried restarting my laptop but that hasn't helped.

I'm running Windows 8 pro on a Dell Inspiron 1564 which I upgraded from Windows 7 in December.

Any help on this would be really appreciated.

A newbie to the forum.

Strange one, I have searched all over for an answer to this problem.

Window 10 Pro Version 10.0.14393.187, under any modern app I'm unable to type any information in, this includes Cortana search field, the windows store search field, settings search field or any field that requires any user input.

I'm able to paste the text into the input line and work from that, but this requires the input to be 'built' in a text editor or notepad then pasted in, not a very fluid process.

No doubt I have missed something simple.

Any help in this matter would be appreciated.

After hours of going through reverting my custom Windows 10 Tweaks, I isolated the problem. You need to set the TextServicesFramework Task to Enabled and then Reboot your PC and you'll be good to go!

Win+R > taskschd.msc > Task Scheduler Library > Microsoft > Windows > TextServicesFramework. Right click MsCtfMonitor and choose Enable. Reboot your PC.

Since a couple of days, some Modern UI apps have missing icons for some reason. It doesn't happen in all Modern UI apps but in some it does (some MS apps and some 3rd party apps). This is really inconvenient and I don't have the slightest clue as to how it happened. I already tried resetting the icon cache as per Microsoft's website instructions but to no avail.
Does anyone know how to solve my problem?

Answer:Missing icons in some Modern UI apps

This is a fix for windows 8, 8.1, and 10. This is the 2nd from the last resort if the dism tool and sfc tool doesn't work.
Resources: You need your primary Microsoft account and you will need to have the secondary Microsoft account.
In order to restore your apps,
A.)You will need to be signed into your primary account that will have you connected to the store.
B.)Go to the Metro control panel and go to accounts and select disconnect. (This switches you to the local account)
C.)Then login into the local account and go back to the metro control panel again and go back to accounts to sign into your secondary account. Select connect to Microsoft account. (NOTE YOU DO NOT NEED TO VERIFY THE ACCOUNT AND IT IS PERFERED THAT YOU DONT)
D.)Go back to your start menu to check to see if your apps are working again, then go into mail and let it sync with your secondary account.
E.)If they done so correctly then go back disconnect the secondary account, which this will again switch you to a local account.
Last but not least F.)Login again into the local account again go back into the control panel and select accounts and select connect Microsoft account and sign in and verify your primary Microsoft account. You will need to sign into your Onedrive account if you use it.

Looking for a way to use powershell to remove every modern/metro app except those specified in a list.
I assume you'd have to use get-appxpackage to list all apps installed, then select ones that aren't in the list.

Hi
I just updated my laptop the other day and I found a black bar appearing on the top of Apps. It's an unwelcome animation. I want to get rid of it after App has finished starting up because it doesn't do anything.
Not only does it not do anything, every time I try to change tabs in a web browser (chrome) I keep hitting the bar bar and it ruins my browsing experience.
I can understand the black bar appearing when an App starts but looks stupid when it doesn't do anything new and interferes with the user experience.
Is there some way to disable it for the likes of apps that use tab browsing as I like to use a mouse to go to the top of the screen to select another tab and not worry about a pop up advertisement type black bar.

Answer:Black title bar in Modern apps when using a mouse ?

Hi there. I'm not in agreement with this bar addition either. I don't use Chrome, but this problem has been reported by other users as well. I have seen no resolution to the problem yet. It's either going to take a Registry hack, MS to give option to turn off, or Google to fix Chrome.

Answer:How can I dim Modern/Metro apps, making them even darker?

Hello,

If you like, your display brightness settings would affect both the desktop and modern UI in Windows 8.

http://www.theverge.com/2014/1/22/5333838/windows-8-1-update-1-pin-metro-apps-taskbar-rumor

These screenshots from renowned Windows leaker Wzor just appeared and it shows Update 1 with an option to put modern on the desktops taskbar and I'm thinking that the next logical step that goes with this is windowed modern apps. I'd say that it doesn't make much sense to even do this without windowing as I think would be only more confusing. And since this ability has been there since 8 anyway as demonstrated by Stardock's Modern Mix utility I don't think it would bean unreasonable thing to get in this update.

Just speculation on my part.

Answer:Windowed modern apps to appear in Windows 8.1 Update 1?

8 should of shipped with this feature. It never seemed logical nor intuitive to limit users to one environment or the other (metro or desktop), especially since they're trying to get their appstore off the ground. I've had 8 on my Ultrabook for approx 7 months or so and to this day haven't so much as opened the appstore... mainly because I never really use Windows 8 outside the desktop environment (that and my phone has pretty much everything covered when it comes to 'apps').

If you could run them as regular applications in the desktop environment or widgets, I'd probably be more inclined to use them.

Not sure what this means... I assume you mean you can't sign in to universal apps such as Mail, Xbox... I don't know what else needs you to sign in to... most don't.

Hello! I've been using w10 for about a month now with a lot of minor problems, but now suddenly I can't open the Immersive system settings, Windows store, Calculator or any other seemingly integral modern app, although my downloads work and so do apps like xbox, edge and weather. I couldn't access the non-working stuff in safe mode either.
(Rebooting, Virus checking and such all done!)

I didn't come here having done nothing. In fact I could write pages of what I've already tried. I also found the windows reset from the system 32 folders, which started fine, but I would rather not reinstall back to w7 and then back to 10, and the discs are, as of now, lost.

So let's get started. The Event Viewer sends 2 reports on every crash, one of which usually blames RPC (remote procedure call) for failing, and another some random executable or ddl depending on the crashing, for example, Calculator.exe and Windows.UI.Xaml.ddl. With latter being there I tried changing the system language. The more promising ones were the RPC services, but they turned out to be set up correctly (RPC automatic and on, RPC locator manual and off, although I tried turning it on).

Then I checked the registry with Regedt32.exe. App packages had reading rights, I also tried giving them every other right in different registers.

Then of course there was SFC -scannow finding corrupted files, but not being able to fix them, and DISM not working at all with the typical /Online ... Read more

This just started happening a day or two ago, but prior I could fullsize a modern app and if I wanted to resize/close it I would just drag my mouse to the top of the screen and the title bar would slide down, but now it's not doing that. Anyone know how to fix that?

More replies

1. The modern apps having the titlebar which allows us to press close in the corner messes with the Start Taskbar if you have it set to the top of the screen instead of the bottom. When you mouse up to the top with and try to drag the file down as normal to close it using the old mouse behaviour it now brings the Start Taskbar down on-top of it, as though the Start Taskbar is using 'auto-hide', which gets in the way and sticks around for a good while, stopping me from closing the modern app.

2. When I have a modern app pinned to the Taskbar, and open, it will not update it's status. Take Mail app for exampel. The Start Screen tile shows me that I have two emails, but the taskbar pin doesn't have a '2' on it. I've seen pictures online that it's supposed to do this.

Hi,

I have been using Windows 10 for almost a month without issue. Then, a few days ago, I received an error message complaining about the registry when attempting to open pictures. I assumed the photo app was broken, as it was the default programme for opening pictures. Sure enough, using a different programme worked and the Photo app wasn't opening from the Start menu at all.

Now I have noticed that NO modern apps open at all. Besides Edge, that works fine. Photos, Groove Music, Calendar, Mail, etc etc. I had them pinned on the Start menu, but now clicking on them has no affect other than to make them disappear from the Start menu until the next restart.

So far, I have tried to reinstall all modern apps using the following command in an admin Powershell:

Get-AppxPackage -allusers | foreach {Add-AppxPackage -register "$($_.InstallLocation)\appxmanifest.xml" -DisableDevelopmentMode}

But that did nothing. I have restarted in Safe mode, which didn't have an effect. Also, sfc/scannow found no errors.

I have yet to try creating a new profile. I think that may work as another profile on the computer works fine. I have also not tried refreshing Windows with a clean install.

I am just hesitant to try either of those options as I would have to reinstall programs and copy over the data from the other profile. I hope there is an easier way!

To be honest -as with other Windows 10 issues I have experienced, I am kind of hoping it is a widespread issue b... Read more

Don't know if this tip has been discussed before, so I decided to show what I stumbled on.
I noticed that when closing Modern Apps using the X button at the top right corner of the screen or swiping the app from the top to bottom in Windows 8.1 Update 1, in the Task Manager you will see the App stays in memory (which I think is by design).
To remove the app from memory, quite easy --> open Task Manager, right click the App and click End Task to remove
But...... there is another way ..... an easier way....
If you swipe the app from top to bottom of the screen but just hold it for about 3-4 seconds at the bottom of the screen, do not lift your finger, you will notice the App flips under you finger, then continue to swipe down to remove from memory completely. That's it. Saves you going to Task Manager to close dormant apps.
Hooroo

Answer:Closing Modern Windows apps (for real)

I prefer Alt+F4 personally. In all honesty though, the X button is just fine. Memory usage goes all the way down after a while to the point where it is negligible. It allows for faster resume if you open the app again.

Hey, I recently bought Acer Aspire Switch 10, I started installing lots apps, but I found out, that they are all installing into the 64GB storage in the tablet - I want to have some of them in the 500 GB-keyboard. I went through all the settings and I didnt find anything. And everything I download out of Modern UI is being seved to the 64GB storage as well, for example I have downloaded VLC player with IE (desktop version) and it is in the tablets storage. Righ now I have to move all the files manually to the keyboard (thats not possible with the Modern UI apps). Can you please give me an advice, so I dont have my problems and the extra storage isnt worhless? Thank you guys!

I'm more curious about this than anything because I just wasted and hour to figure it out. If I disable the DNS Client Service on Windows 8.1 it seems to break a lot of Modern apps. If it's set to start manually, some Modern apps trigger it to start.

Do Modern apps make queries directly to the DNS Client Service or something weird?

Answer:What's the deal with Modern apps and DNS Client Service?

Yeah I came across this just now, and was diagnosing the firewall and know the exact cause.

So when dns client is enabled, all dns requests are routed via it, meaning applications do not need specific udp port 53 internet access.
If the dns client is disabled any internet application that wants to do a dns lookup will need outbound udp port 53 traffic allowed.

Now there is some undocumented behaviour going on.

There is hidden WSH Network hardened rules in the windows firewall, these rules are "always" enabled. Regardless of default outbound state in the windows firewall. (allow rules also wont allow the traffic)
So the default windows firewall configuration is to require allow rules for inbound traffic and allow all outbound traffic.
However there is hidden rules that block certain traffic Microsoft decided to block, and it seems wermgr.exe which is used by metro apps, cannot send out dns traffic, the hardened rules block it.

My gut guess is this is a bug that is yet to be fixed. Because the vast majority of people (well over 99%) will have dns client service enabled in its default state.

Interestingly the hidden rules still kick in if you disable the firewall in the advanced UI. The only way to stop the rules is to actually disable the firewall service which is obviously not recommended, meaning the sane choice is either to keep dns client enabled, dont use modern apps or use a 3rd party software firewall in place of the windows firewall.

I set up my 8.1 installation, played with all the apps, got used to how M$ wants the future to be...and this morning when I turned my PC on, it said it was installing some updates. No biggie.

Now today I am having a bad time with some of the Apps. Skype for example(though this seems to be a known issue?) loads for about 4 seconds then CTS(CrashToStart). Photos will let me look around for about ten seconds, then CTS. Reading List, CTS soon as it looks loaded.

I have tried re-installing the apps, to no avail. Hopefully someone here can help, or a hotfix will be released, because a refresh would be a sucky option just for it to break again.

Hello all,
We have some workstations running Windows 8 that we would like to get upgraded to 8.1. We originally deployed Windows 8 using a customized image with all the Modern UI apps removed, e.g. Mail, Calendar, People, Maps, News, Food & Drink, Health &
Fitness, Reading List, etc. I've run the upgrade on a test machine using "Setup.exe /auto:upgrade" as documented at https://technet.microsoft.com/en-ca/library/dn744271.aspx and it works; however, all the Modern UI apps are re-installed.
Is there a way to perform this upgrade without all the apps installing, or, at the very least, not have the icons appear on the user's Start menu?

So I decreased the display settings on my Windows 10 laptop from the recommended 150% to 125% so that I could have more room on my taskbar as well as a couple other reasons. One unexpected drawback is that now all of the modern apps that I use are filled with tiny text and smaller buttons. Is there a system setting or even a registry hack that could help with this?

Last night my Lumia 925 randomly locked up (which it seems to do quite often) so I did a soft reset and then noticed a bunch of problems.
First I noticed a bunch of my app tiles were blank or only displaying the app name. That happens from time to time when apps are updated or decide to lose track of the day. So I tried to go in and refresh them. But a lot of them wouldn't open. Others will open but crash immediately, and others still will open and display their info but won't update their live tiles. I tried uninstalling and reinstalling some of them but it has had no effect.
In addition to apps not behaving, various settings windows won't open. I thought maybe my phone updated and the update was buggy, but I can't check because Extras+Info crashes before opening.
Also, in my app list the first 4 apps are things I did not install, and don't look normal. @{Miscrosoft.BingTranslate, @{Microsoft.MSBatterySaver, @{Microsoft.MSCalendar, and @{Microsoft.MSPodcast. Pretty sure none of those are supposed to be displaying that way.
I didn't attempt to install anything. I've been running 8.1. I don't know if there was an update pushed out last night that I didn't notice installing.
But my phone isn't working and I am frustrated.
Anyone know what's wrong or have suggestions?

I save almost everything into Dropbox. When I try and attach an file to an email through the Chrome app (non-desktop version), the Dropbox app (not the programme on running on my desktop) will not allow me to select the files to add. I think this is because the Dropbox app is essentially the same as the website and I would have to download the item first. This wouldn't be a huge problem if I was able to get at the document some other way but I get stuck!

I can attach the document if I switch back to the Chrome desktop app, but I am not sure how I managed to make this change the first time!

Does anyone have any ideas about how to switch from between app modes? Thanks in advance

Hi I was given these instructions from another forum to show me how to remove unwanted apps from my computer. Problem seems to stem from the fact that I am unable to replicate a certain "caret" into the command, for example: "Get-AppXPackage -User <username> |  Remove-AppxPackage". I highlighted the caret in red that I mean. It says to open Powershell and at then "Type the following command to remove all Modern apps from the system account", but I tried this but because I cannot put in the " | " in the command it only opens another command beginning, for instance:
PS C:\Windows\system32>
Please help, how do I get this to work, there are tons of apps pre-installed on this windows 8 that I simply do not use, I do not have a disk, it came with windows 8 pre-installed.

2- uninstalling the updates from the control panel-- that doesn't help.
3- restoring my pc from a restoring point-- now it works fine.
the previous update (which includes improved languages and features as stated) caused the same thing, the current updates have one with the same info, so I didn't install it, but that doesn't work too, all updates kill my modern apps.

Hi All,

I have been searching the web and cannot seem to find a way to do this (it may not be possible). I work in the ICT department for a large organisation and we have just purchased some Dell Venue pro 11 tablets. Obviously they come with 8.1 installed and we are putting a new corporate 8.1 enterprise image on them.

We have nearly got everything the way we want it and now it has come to the stage of installing default 3rd party applications. We want some of these applications to be Metro/moderns apps and we want them to be installed for all users. From what I can see this is not possible.

Now the devices are tablets so we do want to use the touch screen apps some of which are only on the windows store. There will be several users on each device and they can change as time goes on so we dont want the users installing them. I am happy for the apps to go on either via MDT or GPO or even install them manually once so is this possible?

So for example is there a way I can install Adobe Reader touch for all users on a device?

If not I cannot believe the Microsoft would create a product where this cannot be done a it makes no sense at all to their core customers (Business/School).

I have read about sideloading but that is only officially for in house apps.

Any help would be appreciated.
