Update - 9/8/15

Fixed by reinstalling Windows fresh (Again).

I think the problem was caused by installing Windows linked with my Microsoft account and then switching that to a local user. My Microsoft account was registered for the insider program so perhaps I was receiving the fast updates and switching to a local account put me on slow updates which got Windows Update muddled in the confusion.

Original Post

Windows Update appears to be stuck/broken. It displays this loading animation even when left alone for an entire day (See screenshot). All the other panels such as Windows Defender will display their available options, it is only Windows Update that will not show.

This is a clean install of Windows 10 Home.

I have made some alterations to the service configuration, disabling what I had been advised as unnecessary services. I have reverted as many of those changes as I could remember but it is a possibility that one of those changes caused this.

Background Intelligent Transfer service is "Running" and set to "Automatic (Delayed Start)".
Windows Update service is "Running" and set to "Manual (Trigger Start)".

8 Aug 15 - Edit: I have cross referenced services with another computer with an unaltered fresh install of Windows 10 Home. No difference in service configuration was found.

Internet connectivity is stable. Network profile is "Public". No alterations have been made to the default network configuration.

User account was originally associated with Microsoft Account but was then switched to be a Local Account.

Have run sfc /scannow which found and fixed some problems. Running sfc /scannow a second time reported no problems.

Running the Windows Update Troubleshooter through Troubleshooting -> Fix problems with Windows Update yields no results. "Troubleshooting couldn't identify the problem"

Have deleted contents of C:\Windows\SoftwareDistribution\Download. Have also re-initiated the C:\Windows\SoftwareDistribution folder.

Have ran command "Dism /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth" which reports no errors.
Have ran command "Dism /Online /Cleanup-Image /StartComponentCleanup /ResetBase".

Have ran the fix-it from https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/kb/971058 which reports "Troubleshooting couldn't identify the problem"

Cross-posting this from my question on Microsoft Answers which unfortunately did not garner much attention so I'm trying on these forums.

8 Aug 15 Edit: Checking installed updates, I do not have KB3074683 or KB3081424. Manually downloaded and installed both of these updates. Did not fix the issue.

Preferred Solution: Settings > Update & Security > Windows Update - does not load

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Hi wadlip,

I have done exactly the same fixes as you - to no avail. Nothing works. I am surprised by a lack of response by Microsoft. In addition to not being able to update, i cannot update the definitions for Windows Defender. This issue has definitely something to do with BITS.
If i stumble over the solution, i'll post here. I have all night to find the fix

Hello,

Upgraded from 8.1 earlier today. Hours later, I realized that the Windows Update dialogue box hangs with nothing going on except the loading dots animation (for up to half-an-hour so far). Can't tell if there are new updates and I'm concerned there could be some in the future that I may need but won't be able to access them.

Any help please!

I have been experiencing some issues with vista. For some reason I can't seem to load my personal settings (right clicking on desktop/personal settings), my properties (from "my computer") or loading the windows update. When I try to do so the screen loads for a fraction of a second and then closes again. No error message or anything is displayed. It just closes... I've tried to enter through the control panel, but with the same result. My computer seems to run fine and haven't been experiencing any virus issues or anything else that could indicate an infection.
Does anyone have any idea what this is caused by?

I'm having trouble loading all sites that use ActiveX, download .zip files, and getting windows update to load. This happened about 5 months ago and went away on it's own after a week. This time it's lasting a bit longer and I can't figure it out..

When I play around with the security settings, even though I might set them to low, it acts as if they're set to high, disabling everything. I've already ran Spybot and Adaware SE and they found nothing. I'm stumped.. Any help is appreciated. Thanks.

I just noticed it won't let me open any .msc files. It's treating me like a limited user although in the user accounts, I'm listed as a Computer Administrator.

Answer:ActiveX/Security Settings/Windows Update

I would run your Windows disc in repair mode to allow an official fix of any problems it detects. Then I would save all your files and directories that are critcial to you, before starting over with a clean install. You are likely going to be plagued with problems until you have a clean install.

this is one of those Windows 8 [and Windows 10 now] "features" that drives me and a lot of other people nuts.
Why is it that I get different "answers", different results, different behavior, from the Control Panel "Windows Update" utility vs the PC Settings "Windows Update" utility? [And why does the latter throw an error when I press the Windows Key?] ?

dumb... I look in Control Panel/Windows Update and, for instance, will have "ready to install" a few updates - nice, clean, ready to go. I look in the Windows 8 [multi-step, slow, cumbersome] Windows Update and I have "check now"... hit the check now button, spin/spin/spin, may or may not get a response. Pressing the Windows Key to return to the relative tranquility of my desktop and it throws an error from 'Microsoft Visual C++ Runtime Library' "Runtime Error Program: C:\Windows\ImmersiveControlPanel\SystemSettings.exe" This application has requested the Runtime to terminate in an unusual way. Please contact the application's support team for more information."

I prefer the control panel versions too, just right click action center flag icon choose Open Windows Update and away we go. What nerves me with the immersive version is looking at the history, it's much easier to read in the control panel version. I guess that's why the registry hack came out so quick in 10TP.

Just posting as a warning to others (and to vent my annoyance a bit)

I always set up my Windows update settings to "check and notify but don't download and install unless I tell you to" to prevent HDD thrashing, performance downgrading at the worst possible times and annoying "oh, you need to restart" notifications.

All working fine... but yesterday I notice some random and annoying HDD thrashing, bit later on the windows update restart notification wants to restart the computer ... what ?

It turns out my update settings had been reset to "automatically download and install (recommended)" without my knowledge and express permission. I was not amused .

And no, nobody else but me has access to the computer, much less someone who knows from where the windows update settings can be modified. And I doubt any malware/virus would be interested in keeping my windows up to date automatically.

Don't know what exact update caused it, but I know I will disable all windows updates if this happens again.

Answer:A update caused windows update settings to reset?

Your'e over-reacting a bit, don't you think? I would hazard a guess and say your system isn't behaving any worse then it was before, and its more secure now

A recent automatic security update for IE7 wouldn't load. I went to the update site and tried to download KB938127. It told me it was incompatible with my files in XP Pro.

I don't use IE and Firefox is set as my default browser. Should I worry about this or just ignore it?

How do I get rid of the shield sitting in my sys tray? I know all it contains is the IE update.

Answer:IE Security Update will not load

Even though you do not use IE, you do need to keep it patched simply because it is joined so closely with Windows.

I found two reasons why this update might fail to install:
1)Cryptographics services are disabled
2)Security policy preventing install

For the first, go into your services and be sure this is set to Automatic
source: http://www.blackviper.com/WinXP/servicecfg.htm
for what XP Pro services should be set to

For the 2nd, download the update from here:
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/938127

then, disconnect from the internet and turn off your antivirus and try to install it.

I have unintentionally put my laptop back to factory settings and am now back to windows 8.
The windows update isn't working and I can't seem to do anything. I keep searching for updates to download and install but it then says the standalone windows installer is not working either.
Does anyone know how to get around this as I am stuck on windows 8 and I cannot download any games or anything.

I just finished upgrading to the Creators Update, and would like to know the best Windows Update settings. I don't want any unexpected restarts, and I would like the option of being asked before installing each update, so I can properly prepare, rather than risk Windows automatically installing it at an inopportune time.

In the last version of Windows that I had (the Anniversary Update), I used the following trick recommended to me by a member of this forum:

Now you can also take control of Windows Update. This is what I do:
Using (for convenience) Winaero's free tweaker (it gives the full manual equivalent if you don't trust such tools) I have set Windows to notify only. No unexpected downloads or restarts.

Read the instructions carefully. It's confusing.
a. Click Check for updates. Wait.
b. Click the button on the tweaker.
c. Check you see this (text at bottom).

It worked very well, and Windows always gave me the option to perform updates, rather than automatically downloading them.

However, I do not know whether it is safe to use this method in the Creators Update. Also, even if it is safe, I don't know whether it's my best best option, or whether the Creators Update now provides a better one.

Currently, Windows Update on my computer looks like this (due to the settings caused by the Creators Update):

Answer:Best Windows Update settings for Creators Update?

I won't speak much to the update settings change for "notify only" but I will speak to the red text that reads "*Some settings..." These days, the notify only method is no longer explicitly available through Settings but through Group Policy. Another workaround is to set your home connection as metered in which case WU won't update automatically (you'll have to check for updates manually, because it won't notify you of pending updates, either -- but if you're a regular here at TenForums, you'll be notified in the News forum every time a new update shows up anyway). As for "*Some Settings..." that means some kind of policy tweak or change has been applied to your PC, and causes that message to appear. Making this go away turns out to be more trouble than it's worth: I've had it on my production PC since 1507 and I've yet to be able to clear it up since (along with lots of other people, if you search out the many threads devoted to that topic here).

Hello! For about the past two years I've been having troubles with Windows Update, and it's pretty much stopped checking for updates and updating in general. I didn't think much of it, but now I feel like it's affecting MSE.

Recently I had an issue with updating it, so I had to uninstall it via the Microsoft Support website because I couldn't uninstall it normally. But when I triy to reinstall it, it gets to about the point where it seems like it's installing, and then it stops and says there was an error with the installation. I've tried just about every suggestion and troubleshooting that the Microsoft website offers me, but nothing seems to be working.

I've ran Malware Bytes, Windows Defender, TDSSKiller, and even Microsoft Security Scanner; nothing detects any malware or spyware, so I'm getting the feeling that something might be corrupted! I made another post more in depth about it here, but I feel like I might not get any good help.

If anyone has any suggestions or solutions, I'd really appreciate it!!

I just installed Windows 10 and need to update my antivirus. Answer:Update and Security tab error in Settings app

Welcome to the forum!

Are you using a 3rd party internet security software? If you are, and you have the licensing data backed up, uninstall and get Windows 10 situated and settled before reinstalling the 3rd party software, ensuring that it is W10- compatible.

If you are not, might the problem be internet access-related?

Hello, I previously has Norton on my computer with an expired subscription. A Norton pop up kept appearing, the scan wouldnt run and my laptop kept turning itself off. I uninstalled Norton and the problem with turning off has resolved. I then downloaded Microsoft Security Essentials to use as my virus scanner. It installed OK but would not update. I posted this problem on another forum here: http://social.answers.microsoft.com/Forums/en-US/msestart/thread/84452f5d-bde2-46d9-afbe-4c2a582a4e3b and after following the instructions it started working. However when following those steps I noticed my Windows Update will not update, and hasnt done since May! If I click on update the green bar moves but never gets anywhere, ive left it for 15min+ and it just keeps saying its checking for update. Now Security Essentials is doing the same as before, getting halfway through updating and stopping, and when I go to close it its says its not responsing, as does windows updater.

On the last forum it was suggested there may be underlying issues and after googling my problem I came across this forum which I am now going to use from now on. I dont know anything about computers and have no idea how to go about investigating this myself so any help at all is greatly appreciated. Thanks very much for taking the time to read this.

I found some questionable files this week that had been downloaded by my son. I have since spent a great deal of time trying to scan and clean the computer. Each malware/spyware/anti-virus scanner has had varying levels of success.

It seems that the bulk of my issues have been resolved but I am still unable to install the following update from Microsoft: Cumulative Security Update for Internet Explorer 9 for Windows 7 for x64-based Systems (KB2719177)

Each time I try to update it, it aborts and gives me an error code (80073712), that is not showing up in any google searches or searches of microsoft's site.

Additionally, every time I shutdown or restart the computer it shows that new updates are being installed.

I am using Windows 7 home premium 64-bit.

Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance.

I found the directions from another forum after I was able to find the root cause of the problem in c:\windows\IE9_main.log. Specifically this is what my log file said:

Hello, everyone!

So a little background first...

My dad's PC was loading up Windows (black screen), so I pop out the hard drive and do an error check and virus scan on my computer. Everything turned out OK, put the hard drive back in and Windows starts up.

Now, however, even though the internet connection is fine, I'm getting timeouts when trying to go to Windows Update or when updating Security Essentials. Strangely enough, I tried installing other anti-virus programs and experienced connection issues.

I also ran the drive through Malware Bytes and came up clean, so I'm not really sure where to go from here. My dad has some older software that he'd like to keep but doesn't have the original disks to reinstall, so a format would be a last resort.

Any help or suggestions are appreciated!!

Answer:Windows Update & MS Security Essentials Update timeouts

Are you saying that you cannot connect to Windows Update?

If not....what is the exact error message?

<<My dad's PC was loading up Windows (black screen)...>>

Are you saying that it would not boot completely...and that it halted at a black screen with blinking cursor in upper left hand corner?

What happens if you try to connect to www.microsoft.com?

Tuesday 8 January, we are releasing several non-security update packages via Windows Update. The updates include the regular monthly Malicious Software Removal Tool and Windows Mail Junk Mail Filter, two updates in our regular series of Windows Vista updates (KB943302 for application compatibility and KB943899 for reliability and performance), and one update of particular notice: KB935509. Similar to previous updates that enhanced Windows Vista?s performance and reliability, these updates will be distributed automatically through Windows Update.Tomorrow?s KB935509 release is a little different than past updates. It is a prerequisite for installing SP1 and is applicable only for Windows Vista Ultimate and Enterprise users, because it only affects versions of Windows Vista supporting BitLocker Drive Encryption. This update modifies the boot loader to enable successful install or uninstall of the service pack if the PC uses BitLocker encryption. We?re releasing it now to lay the groundwork for future updates and to eliminate any extra reboots by installing it along with updates that already require a reboot. For more information on the update, see KB article KB935509 (which will be posted on Tuesday morning).

Hello,

I have a Win2K SP4 (all Critical Updates) laptop that has a weird quirk I noticed recently. I have installed the Security Update KB819696 (Unchecked Buffer in DirectX Could Enable System Compromise) a few times, but it never asks to reboot when finished and will always show up as a critical update even when I have manually rebooted the laptop.

Any idea on what could be causing this and how to solve it? Recently there has been some problems with malware/spyware/adware (which is cleaned) and perhaps something in the registry was corrupted or deleted as a result. Other than that, everything seems to work fine. Thanks for your help.

Answer:Security Update KB819696 in Windows Update even after installing it.

I've had that happen on more than one occasion. MS eventually fixed the problem but your case may be due to other factors.

Here's what Doug Knox offers:

Usage: Download xp_hotfix_prompt.vbs and save it to your hard drive. Double click the VBS file you downloaded and you'll be prompted to enter the KBxxxxxx or Qxxxxxx number of the Hotfix. No checking is done to see if the Hotfix is actually installed on your system, so its your responsibility to ensure that it is.

Note: I cannot guarantee that this will work for ALL HOTFIXES. Using the tools at my disposal, I have determined how the majority of checking is done for the presence of a particular hotfix. This mechanism may not be the same for all Hotfixes and could change at any time.

So I'm on build 16215 and I wasn't able to update to the build after that (was it 16223?) because the installation of said build always fails at ~20% and reverts back to the previous version of Windows.
I performed a clean install and things haven't changed. Recently, build 16228 was released and I still can't update. The build fails to download at 10%. I tried restarting my computer before trying to downloading it again. Now, I can't even open the Update and Security setting on the Settings app. The app freezes when I click on the setting but when I try the other options, it still works fine.

Earlier I went into Settings and clicked on Update & Security, and I found Windows Problem Reporting running in the background. I checked the Reliability Monitor (because for some reason problem reports aren't saving on my computer) and found this:

Something in the background was hogging the disk like mad, which I think has to do with it. Anyway it looks like this was just a one-time fluke and also never happened until today.

Hi guys. I am working on my future father-in-law's computer. When I first got the computer to work on, it had several fake anti-virus and spyware programs on it. I have removed as much as I can and used MalwareBytes, Super AntiSpyware, SpyBot S&D, and Microsoft Security Essentials to clean as much as possible. The scans are now all coming back clean, but I still cannot update the security definitions for Microsoft Security Essentials and when I click on Windows Update, the page always comes back "cannot be displayed". I am also getting random pop-ups for various scandalous websites.

Please let me know what I can do to get this stuff cleaned off.

Thanks,

Hi,

I am a college student at home on break and my parents asked me to try and fix the family computer which was, at the time, completely hosed. That being said, I have little knowledge of what was done on the computer in the past or what they did that could have gotten it so infected.

After booting up the computer, it was essentially unusable so the first thing I did was run System Recovery. After that I was at least able to run Windows XP normally to some degree and boot in Safe Mode as well. Upon booting it up, the computer kept popping up "XP Anti-spyware 2011" windows and wouldn't let me access any websites or run any other programs so I switched over to Safe Mode. In Safe Mode I ran Malwarebytes Anti-Malware, SUPERAntiSpyware Free Edition, Spybot Search and Destroy, and Registry Mechanic. Each program found a large number of problems (I didn't think to save the logs at the time) and then continued to fix them.

The computer now runs much more smoothly when booted normally, and does not show any obvious signs of malware. However, I am unable to run Windows Update or access the windows update website and am having the same problems with Security Update. Also, when trying to access anti-virus/trojan/spyware websites or forums I will occasionally get redirected to random search engine links. Because of these problems I am assuming that there is still some type of virus/trojan/spyware left on the computer.

In terms of the checklist given in the "Ne... Read more

Hi,

Please do the following:

Download ComboFix from one of the following locations:
Link 1
Link 2

VERY IMPORTANT !!! Save ComboFix.exe to your Desktop

* IMPORTANT - Disable your AntiVirus and AntiSpyware applications, usually via a right click on the System Tray icon. They may otherwise interfere with our tools. If you have difficulty properly disabling your protective programs, refer to this link here Double click on ComboFix.exe & follow the prompts.
As part of it's process, ComboFix will check to see if the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is installed. With malware infections being as they are today, it's strongly recommended to have this pre-installed on your machine before doing any malware removal. It will allow you to boot up into a special recovery/repair mode that will allow us to more easily help you should your computer have a problem after an attempted removal of malware.
Follow the prompts to allow ComboFix to download and install the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console, and when prompted, agree to the End-User License Agreement to install the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console.
**Please note: If the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is already installed, ComboFix will continue it's malware removal procedures.

Once the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is installed using ComboFix, you should see the following message:
Click on Yes, to continue scanning for malware.
When finished, it shall produce a log... Read more

Hello JustinBarnettWelcome to BleepingComputer ==========================One or more of the identified infections is a backdoor trojan or rootkit. This type of infection has the capabilities to allows hacker to remotely control your computer, steal critical system information and download and execute files.I would counsel you to disconnect this PC from the Internet immediately. If you do any banking or other financial transactions on the PC or if it should contain any other sensitive information, please get to a known clean computer and change all passwords where applicable, and it would be wise to contact those same financial institutions to apprise them of your situation.Though the trojan has been identified and can be killed, because of it's backdoor functionality, your PC is very likely compromised and there is no way to be sure your computer can ever again be trusted. Many experts in the security community believe that once infected with this type of trojan, the best course of action would be a reformat and reinstall of the OS. Please read these for more information:How Do I Handle Possible Identity Theft, Internet Fraud and CC Fraud? When Should I Format, How Should I ReinstallWe can still clean this machine but I can't guarantee that it will be 100% secure afterwards. Hi Guys,
With the new Second Edition of Security Update Guide, it is difficult to follow all updates on all OS's. All KB articles are listed on all Servers version.
Before, with the Microsoft Security Bulletin, it was possible to properly approve required patches on all versions of OS's on (WSUS 3.0 SP2) on a single click. But now each KB should be approved one-by-one.
Do you have a remedy to this?

Hi. I don't know what has happened but my pc is running strangely recently. For example, I can't install the visual c redistributable (vcredist.exe), or directx 9.0c, and some games don't work which did a while ago - now they crash to the desktop. I haven't got a restore which fixes the problem. It is all a bit strange.
I've got windows 7 64 bit on a Dell vostro - i7 860, 4g ram etc.
I've tried microsoft security essentials, all manner of spyware removers including spyware search & destroy to no avail.
What should be the next step in investigating this?
Thanks for any help!

Answer:can't install visual c redistributable, or directx 9.0c, can't update - security update for visual c++, system update...

Microsoft Windows 7 already has DirectX 11, so installing version 9 will always fail and is useless. It also has VC++ redistributable 2005 and 2008. The latest version which is not included on Windows 7 is VC++ 2010 redistributables which you should install (but very few games are designed in VC++ 2010 today). When games fail, they create a crash report or log. You should go through them and try to find the possible cause. What message do games show when crashing?Check Event Viewer to find the possible cause of crashing of a game.

I just installed the newest Lenovo settings and dependencies package (from the Lenovo Settings App), and the update to power plans is fantastic.  I'd forgotten just how often the fans were running on my Helix while in laptop mode, until I installed this and they basically turned off most of the time.  The readme file on the drivers page says there were no bug fixes introduced, but that's not my experience.  It also installed Airplane Mode, which I never noticed before, which sips juice for longer flights.   If you're using a Helix and 8.1, get the updates.

I don't know how many time I have downloaded this update , but after it downloads and installs it tells me that an update is avilable and it's always the same one. I've even restarted the computer after it downloads and updates but after computer restarts it ask to update it again.

Just wondering if anyone else has this issue?
Or how I can fix it without shutting the reminder for it off.

I'm having no luck installing KB2977629 (Cumulative Security Update IE11). I repeatedly get the error 8007371B.

SURT installs with no errors. SFC /SCANNOW runs with no errors. I am uploading the requested screenshots and ZIP file.

Any help would be appreciated.

Thank you!!!!

PS- well, I WAS uploading. My screencaptures upload great, but my CBS.zip fails with "Server error 500".
My zip file is 9.6mb-- over the 8mb limit. What can I delete from the directory to get under the 8mb limit?

I just discovered this problem when Myrti and I were working on some other problems on my computer. I noted that I'd gotten an 'update failed' several times lately. It said 'Some updates could not be installed. The following updates were not installed. MS.NetFramework 1.1 Service Pack 1 Security Update for windows 2000, XP, Vista, 2008, Windows7 and Windows Server 2008R2 (KB953297).' The error code was 0X64C.

I checked back in my logs and found that my computer has been attempting this update since October 2009!

When I tried manually at the Microsoft site, it said I needed to upload ActiveXControl, which I did. It still couldn't successfully update that security.

I have the log. Would you like for me to attach? I just did it a few days ago.

Thanks,
Sue Ellen

Hello,

Recently Microsoft has been trying to update my software with a security update

{Security Update for Microsoft Office XP (KB921596)}

Unfortunately something is going wrong and I am told that Microsoft was unable to update the security update.

At the moment when I switch off my PC, the turn off button is showing the multicoloured shield next to it (meaning it will update before switching off)

I think it is trying to update the same security update as above.

The situation has been like this for maybe a fortnight now.

Please could you help me to sort the situation out.

Many thanks

Regards Richard Milner.

PS, My security software (Kaspersky Internet Security 2009) has been flashing up a message about Key logging… (what ever that is) whenever I click on & open up my media playing program InterVideo WinDVD 5….. Could this have anything to do with the aforementioned Microsoft Security update ?

Hello all.
Running windows 10 pro 64 bit.
I've updated from Version 1511 to the anniversary update, 1607.
Or at least, I thought I did.
The update went well, no hiccups, no errors. Used windows update, let it downloaded and install and rebooted. Alas, system still shows OS Version 1511.
Used update again, same thing, rebooted, 1511.
Went to the windows site, downloaded the windows10upgrade9252.exe, ran it, same exact issue, rebooted, still showing version 1511.
Error logs show no issues. Disabled all external drives, turned off anti-virus, etc, repeated, rinsed, rebooted, still version 1511.
Only think I've not done is burned an ISO to DVD and updated from that.
Any clues as to what's going on?
Thanks!
Nelson Davis

Answer:windows 10 update from version 1511 to 1607 anniversary update - does not update

Can you check to see what OS version you have? Check in settings > system > OS build. It should show something like 14393.5 or 14393.10

First issue is that I need to use a specific older driver for my AMD graphics card and windows 10 continues to update the driver automatically and causes my system to crash. I've gone through {Control Panel-Devices & printers}, selected my machine, then right clicked to Device Installation Settings and selected "no, let me choose what to do". This has no effect as windows continues to update the driver daily or anytime I search for updates. Is there a specific port I can block or cmd line to run?

Second issue, on the windows update window, the feature is frozen on Service Pack 1 for MS Office 2013 (KB2850036) 64-bit edition @ 61%. It's been like this for a week. I've restarted the machine several times and seems to do nothing. Any suggestions would be very helpful.

Thanks.

For over a week, when I start my laptop, it seems to start normally, then I get a screen that says "updates could not load and changes are being undone, don't turn off my computer'.  Does anyone know what is going on?  I am using Windows 8.1.

I have Panda Security, and Anti Super Spyware, both paid for.  I just got rid of Win Patrol free, although I have used it on my old laptop without problems.  I have not purchased or downloaded any other programs.

Any ideas how I can find out what is going on?

Answer:Windows update won't load.

I'm just offering some advice. I'm not a Computer expert, just so you know

I had this issue on 2 different PCs, both with Windows 8.1.
It would force me into updates, and then say that the updates were unsuccessful and that it is undoing the changes.
It stayed in a restart loop of 'undoing changes' until I went into Safe Mode (using Shift + F8) and did a System Restore.
I have now changed the settings on BOTH computers to not automatically install update. I don't need that kind of trouble! LOL

Hi, try the following making sure each stage is clear or fixed before proceeding:

From an admin command prompt
[Windows key + X, click command prompt (admin)]
chkdsk C: /F
Your PC will need to restart.
Make sure the result is clear or fixed- else do not proceed.
Post back the result, which you can get after a restart as follows:

Download and install Tweaking.com's free cautious repair tool

Is it already known if Windows 10 RTM will have the update setting available to only show that updates are available without forcing you to install them? There are rumors that this is the future for Windows Update that you cannot prevent them. Other sources say its only for Windows Insiders until you have final RTM version.

Answer:Update Settings in Windows 10 RTM

Believe this is what you are looking for:
First, the Slow-approved patch goes out to all consumer Windows 10 customers -- the ones with "free" Windows. Consumers have no choice about it; they will get the patch, thereby being updated to the "Current branch." Presumably Windows 10 will have some mechanism for prohibiting reboots at specific times of the day, but that's the extent of individual customers' control. There will be no ability to shut off automatic updates (short of permanently disconnecting from the Internet), no provision for blocking specific updates, and no way to roll back updates -- either one at a time, or en masse -- should they cause problems. I haven't seen any official announcement that lays the process out quite so starkly, but that seems to be where we're headed. How Windows 10 updating will work: The devil's in the details | InfoWorld

Hello-

I have two questions about windows update.

First is whether there is anyway to completely disable Windows update from bugging me about restarting my computer to install updates. I know about setting the interval to the max of 1440 in the group policy editor and I know how to manually kill the service with net stop wuauserv. Neither of those stop it from coming back completely.

The second is if there is anyway to unsubscribe from getting microsoft's monthy malware removal tool update. Seems trivial I know, but I get tired of hiding it.

Thank you

Answer:Windows update settings

Hello livevil,

You could use the tutorial below to disable Windows Update automatic restart to let you manually restart when you're ready to. Windows Update - Enable or Disable Automatic Restart
It's would best to always install the Malicious Software Removal Tool (MRT) updates to help keep your system safer.

Hope this helps,

Answer:Windows update that fail to load

Try to restore your computer before the updates were downloaded using system restore. You can then download them again.

If you need more information on how to do a system restore just ask.

Good Luck

I have a Windows 7 64-bit machine that appears to be infected with malware. No automatic updates work; when I check the services, the Windows Update Service is not running even though it is set to Automatic. I cannot get it to start; the error code is 93.

A copy of the HijackThis logfile is attached.

I believe the Admin user has been hijacked, and any attempts to delete suspicious items through HiJackThis do not work.

The items containing lsass look to be suspicious, for example.

Please help.

Hello, I just rebuilt my PC and installed XP SP3, IE 8, and FF 3.6. Automatic updates are working (i.e. updates are downloaded and installed). However, I cannot get to the Windows Update webpage on this machine (http://windowsupdate.microsoft.com/). I've read forums that say this is due to a firewall issue, but I disabled my firewall and still cannot access the page. I have not setup any other special network rules/restrictions. I can access other webpages without problems. It could be a virus I suppose but I just rebuilt the system, so that makes me somewhat skeptical. Any thoughts? Thanks everyone!

I am trying to get a freinds computer back up and running. there were some viruses I cleaned out using AVG antivirus program. I can surf the net but it wont let me get into email as well. I wanted to do windows update and it wont load because of errors. PLEASE help

Answer:cant get windows update to load getting errors

If you have cleaned ALL malware, your current problems may not be malware related. The only way we can tell if you are clean is by having you run our full cleaning procedures given below.

Please follow our standard cleaning procedures which are necessary for us to provide you support. Also there are steps included for installing, renaming, running, and posting HijackThis logs as attachments.

Run ALL the steps in this Sticky thread READ & RUN ME FIRST Before Asking for Support
Make sure you check version numbers and get all updates.
Very Important: Make sure you tell us the results from running the tutorial...was anything found? Were you unable to complete any of the scans?...Were you unable to download any of the tools?...Did you do the on-line scans as suggested? etc.

After doing ALL of the above you still have a problem make sure you have booted to normal mode and run the steps in the below link to properly use HijackThis and attach a log:
Downloading, Installing, and Running HijackThisMake sure you also rename HijackThis.exe as suggested in the procedures. Use analyse.exe for the new name. This is very important due to some new infections going around.
When you return to make your next post, make sure you attach the following logs and that you have run these scans in the following order too:
CounterSpy - only for Windows XP, 2K, & NT users
AVG Antispyware log - ONLY IF NEEDED you were not able to run CounterSpy. - only for Windows XP, 2K, &... Read more

I tried those commands from windows site

bootrec /fixmbr and other bootrec

and in config,

ren system syste.001 this worked but

ren software software.001

this gave errorprocess in use, can not be accessed.

How can i rescue? I dont have any rescue disc or etc.

Desktop computer, 32 bit probably.

Answer:Can not load windows , update error to 8.1

Is the Windows 8.1 disc 64 bit version?  Either bad disc, or wrong version for what you have, and what he burnt to the disc.  I have run into where I have had to turn off Secure boot in the UEFI bios.  It helps to know what the manufacturer & model# of your computer that you have.

I recently reloaded xp on my computer to fix an error created by another piece of software. Since than I cannot get my system to accept security updates from Microsoft. The down load works, but I get an error that indicates none of the updates can be installed. I am currently missing 70 updates. I have tried to load one at a time in the event I did not reserve enough disk space, but I still get the same results. Do you have any ideas how this can be fixed.

Answer:Cannot load latest windows update

Try this website:

http://www.getautopatcher.com/

It allows you to download all the patches (about 300 MB) and install what you need. I have a security camera pc(vendor configured) that does not allow access to the windows update website and I used this tool to patch the system. Hope it helps solve your issue.

I can not load windows new updater. Every time I try it just starts back at the start down load page all over again.

I also can't load DirectX 9.0b. It says that I have ver 8.1 . A little box that reads "Software Installation" on the top bar says. The software you are installing has not passed Windows Logo testing to verify it's compatibility with Windows XP.

This software will not be installed. Contact your system administor.

The next little box that pops up says.

"DirectX Setup" on the top blue bar and then below it says. DirectX did not copy a required file.
Any help I can get on this stuff would be greatly appreciated.

I'm having a problem with Windows Update. When I go to access the update site, it says done but with errors on page. Nothing shows up at all, just a blank screen. I have a feeling it has something to do with all the changes I had to make to get rid of lots of spyware/malware. If anyone could offer some thoughts and possible solutions, I'd really appreciate it. I haven't been able to update Windows in quite a while.

I'm running XP Pro. If any other information is needed, please let me know. Thanks to all who help in advance.

Answer:Solved: Can't load Windows Update
