Travelstar Z5K500 simple questions

Question: Travelstar Z5K500 simple questions

Hi, I was reading on wikipedia and I came across a few parameters listed in Piriform's Defraggler about my HDD. They are; reported uncorrectable errors which is at nearly 4.3 billion, command timeouts at 65,000
G-Sense error rate 4700. I'm wondering if these values are a bad and what these attributes actually mean. All values are rounded up by the way.

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Hi everybody, i just wanted to enquire a few thing about my new system. Recently i just bought a new Acer Aspire M9310 Desktop, due to the death of my old Dell. My new pc has the Intel Core i3-540 3.06GHz with intergrated Intel HD Graphics. The first thing i wanted to know is how many cores the Intel Core i3-540 has. Some people tell me its a Dual-core whereas some tell me its a quad, i have no idea and just wanted to know what it is. The second, main question i have is about the upgrading/expansion capabilities of my PC. Now, i have heard many bad thing about the intergrated Intel HD graphics and was wondering if i could install a dedicated Graphics card. I found this webpage on the Acer website about my computer:

http://www.support.acer.com/acerpanam/desktop/2010/acer/aspire/AspireM3910/AspireM3910sp2.shtml

However, im not really sure about what this is telling me. Does this website tell me that these are the maximum hardware capabilities of my PC. So for example, could i change my proccessor to the Intel Core i7-870 processor and a dedicated NVIDIA GeForce GT 320 gpu? (I'm most-likely not going to do this). However something i am going to do in the near-future is just install a Graphics card, if i can. So could i choose any of the Graphics card on that list on the Acer website, is that how it works? Just wanted to clear a few things up before i do any thing stupid. Help would be greatly appreciated . Thank you in advance.

Answer:Just a few simple questions.

Looks like your processor is a dual core.
The specs say there is one pci express X16 slot for a graphics card
and the system does seem to be I7 compatable.
Before you start upgrading anything, though, you will want to look
into getting a much better power supply.
The max they supply with that system is 300 watts.
Pretty weak.
The geforce gt 320 is just one of the integrated video options they
offer with that system, and you can't change the integrated video.
You can add a dedicated card to the pci express X16 slot.

Hi,

If I bought Half-Life 2, would I also be able to download/get CS:S for free? If I bought CS:S by itself, would I also be able to install mods?

Thanks,

Answer:Simple Questions about HL2

There is a version of counter strike that comes with HL2 and I do believe you can install mods. (I own hl2 and I do play cs once and a while. But I don't play it very often.) Any one know if CS: source is a different game?

Hi guys,

I've got 2 simple questions:

1. My gf's got a P3-450 with 64mb of RAM (in 1 slot, with 2 remaining empty ones). I'd like to bump that up to maybe 256mb, or even 300mb. Basically, as much as her system and my pocket can support.

What kind of RAM should I get? There's all sorts now, and I'm confused. I used to be a tech geek in 1994-95, when EDO RAM was king, but I'm completely lost now.

Also, do P3-450s have a cap to the maximum amount of RAM the system can support?

2. A friend gave me a USB hub (I plug it into 1 USB port and I get 4). I'm pretty sure it's USB 1.1 or whatever because he bought it 2 years ago. I'm using USB 2.0. WIll it transfer at 2.0 or 1.1 speeds?

thanks a mil!

I have Windows ME.

1: How do I get rid of the logon page at the startup?
2: How do I change my CPU's fan so that is slows down and makes less noise? Also I want to keep my computers casing off so that it doesnt overheat. So what would be a good tempurature to keep it on?

Answer:2 simple questions...

1. http://support.microsoft.com/kb/q152104/

2. If it's not adjustable, easiest way is to buy one. (Not a good idea if the PC is overheating. Fix the heat issue first at least)

As far as leaving the case off, that's OK for a little while, but not long term.

The case prevents dust build up etc.

i have ideapad y480 and i want to add an ssd, can i keep my both hard drive and ssd? What is true benefits of intel rapid storage tehnology (irst)? can i use this future with another brand of SSD?Thank you before.

Solved!

Answer:2 Simple questions about SSD

If your Y480 has mSATA, you can put a mSATA SSD and keep the old HDD. I recommend Crucial M4 or Mushkin Atlas since it's fully compatible with Lenovo laptops (both thinkpads and Ideapads). I don't have an SSD so I can't tell you how well will they perform on the Y480. The true benefit of Intel RST is quick resume from standby. I wake my y470 from sleep to desktop in 1 second! Basically, it allows "instant on" feature from many ultrabooks (only works on sleep mode, not hibernate).

1. I have a Maxtor MaxLINE Plus II 250 GB SATA hard drive. It powers up and SATA is enabled in Windows 2000 and the BIOS. However, it cannot be detected. It makes clicking noises at the Windows 2000 startup screen. How can I make it work?

2. I have 6 Socket-370 processors, however, they are all Tualatin core-based. Where can I get an FC-PGA to FC-PGA2 converter? Why can't the Tualatins work in Coppermine motherboards?

Answer:Two Simple Questions

Have you made sure the SATA drivers are installed? It can be enabled in the BIOS but if you haven't installed the SATA drivers to the drive that has the OS on it yet then it won't be recognized.

Also have you made sure you formatted it? Drives won't be seen if they aren't formatted at all.

I have a HP Media Center PC M7160n
with Windows XP Operating System.
I've couple of questions.

First is, I've 3 browsers, IE 8 [latest beta] + Firefox 3.03 + Google Chrome

In Firefox whenever i access certain websites that look at user-agents and determines the course of action, I keep getting websites saying "NO USER-AGENT FOUND YOU ARE NOT ALLOWED TO ACCESS THE WEBSITE!"

So i checked it out and it seems this is true, especially when i access youtube.com and i get a blank page because it seems it can't read my user-agent.
So i got a firefox plugin to change user-agent and set it to the "DEFAULT" Mozilla Firefox agent and tried it, still nothing!

To confirm this i went on:

Do you have to be signed up with a paid subscription for AOL in order to use an AOL email client and AOL internet browser?

When you sign up for AOL do they mail you a modem, and send out a tech repair guy if it isn't working and they can't trouble shoot it over the phone?

Does AOL's anti-virus software only protect against viruses while using their browser and email client? Or does it protect the whole computer? Example: If you import a virus off a USB stick or download a virus off uTorrent will AOL's anti-virus catch it?

hey

sorry if these are totally simple questions, but i just want to be sure encase i'm wrong...

...i want to upgrade my ram in my pc, right now it's 512mb

if i get a 1gb stick, and put it in there, and leave the 512mb in, is there any driver or something i'll need to do when i power on, i don't think so, but do i need to "setup" the computer to let it know i just upgraded the ram...

also, i can just leave the one 512mb stick in there, and add the 1gb stick, correct? is there a way my motherboard couldn't handle more than 1gb or something, if it "maxed" out at 1gb, would it effect the computer would it?

and, lastly, i'm 99% sure, there's only one kind of pc ddr ram, correct?

any other tips would be awesome

thanks

Question: simple questions

what, does the CR2032 battery on the motherboard do, and what happens when it goes dead? also, does it get charged by the system in any way when the computer is plugged in and or running? i am trying to resurrect a long dead computer, by swapping parts out with other dead computers. since none of them work, there is nothing lost. and it keeps my old noodle from shriveling up to the size of a peanut.

Answer:simple questions

Its the battery for the CMOS which holds data for the Bios, if you take it out then there is no power to the CMOS and it loses all its memory (as its volatile) and resets the data to default. it does not get charged by the system but the battery lasts years.. when you have say a password on the bios and you forgot it, pull the battery out and it clears all the information and password in the CMOS.

Normally when you find your time is resetting on your PC/ laptop when you boot up, that can be because the CMOS battery is dying so it keeps resetting so it would be replaced.

I have 2 simple questions wish to know:

1.Can u describe the details of "refresh rate"?What is the difference between high and low refresh rate???Is higher refresh rate is better???

2.What is the program out there which can open 'vbs' file???

Any help would be highly appreaciated.ThankQ.

Answer:2 Simple Questions.Please Help.

Like the name "refresh rate" says its the ammount of times your screen gets refreshed per second. The lower the refresh rate the more stressful it is for your eyes - to the point that you can actually see the monitor flicker.
While your eye usually cant see any improvement above 85 hz it might still be a good idea to use an even higher refresh rate (if supported by your gfx card and monitor) as research shows that your brain still registers diffrences above that.
Of course this only applies for CRTs (PC monitors, TVs) - for LCD screens refresh rate doesnt matter so much as lower refresh rates do not create flickering.

Question: 2 Simple Questions

Aloha,

I want to do two things with certain programs so that I can more easily go between several programs. First I want to bring some programs, "Notepad" for example, to the front of the screen, the way task bar is always in front. The other thing I want to do is to make programs transparent or opaque, the way "process explorer" can go to varying degrees of transparency. Is that possible?

Much thanks

i am private person with private pc
1.how many times i can activate my windows 7?10 times?
2.where i can see,how many times i have activated my windows?

Answer:very simple questions

Very simple answers.

1) If you have a retail license (meaning you bought it from a shop), you can use it only on ONE machine at any given time. But you are free to uninstall on one machine, then install on another i.e. the license istransferable. But ONE machine at any given time.

2) There is no way to see how many times. But you can see whether you are activated or not by clicking on control panel->system, then scroll down to see windows activation.

Feel free to ask harder questions. Basically it depends on what type of license you have, which you havent told us specifically.

Question: 2 simple questions

1st question... if i hand write a essay then scan it to my hard drive, is there any kind of program that will read it, correct the grammer and spelling then type it? also 2nd question.... i use cable [road runner] but also i have a digital box that both my pc and phone is connected too, is there anyway i can use my pc as a fax machine?

Answer:2 simple questions

1) There is a program that can read it, but not correct the grammar. The scanner should have come with OCR software. That can read your scan and output it into a text editor like Microsoft Word.

2) I have not seen a fax software that uses a cable connection yet, however there are internet sites that can provide that service.

Question: Simple questions

How do I view files already queued up for saving to back up disc. I get a message once in awhile that they're there, but when I'm ready to save them, I can't find them.

Also, how can I control icons shown in bottom tray right hand corner, i.e. add and delete?

Thanks

Answer:Simple questions

Icons in the System Tray (bottom tray Right hand corner) are programs that Start with Windows. You can open the program, go to Preferences or Options and uncheck Start with Windows, or Auto Start or some such, that is the best way. The other way is to go to Start/Run and type msconfig go to the Startup Tab and uncheck the program you do not want to start with Windows.
What Backup software are you using? You would have to use that program to view files being queued for backup. Or do you mean files that were sent to the CD-RW drive and you want to view them before burning? If the later, go to My Computer and double click the CD/DVD burner drive to view files that were sent to the burner to be burned.

I feel silly asking such simple, newbie-esque questions... on the other hand, Microsoft has designed XP's defaults specifically for newbies so much it takes a while to remove all of the "user-friendly" idiotproofing they put in... anyway...

Does anyone know how, in IE, to get the links to appear in their own toolbar, rather than just a drop-down menu off to the right of the address? I can't click on it and drag it like I can in something like Office, and I don't see a menu option for it in Customize or anything like that. The whole point of my quick links was so that I could click them like buttons; if I need to open a drop-down menu, I would just stick them in my regular bookmarks. Does anyone know how to do this?

Also, in 98, I put My Computer in my Start Menu, since I like to be able to just open up the start menu and open a My Computer window from there. In XP, however, if I try to put a My Computer shortcut into the Start Menu, when I click on it, it spools out showing its contents like any other Start Menu folder, rather than opening up a new My Computer window. Is there a way that I can put a My Computer shortcut in the Start Menu that doesn't expand but that actually forces open a separate new My Computer window? (I guess I could put a Windows Explorer shortcut or something in there instead, but that's not really how I like it...)

Allright so awhile ago I was experiencing alot of bluescreen errors. Now I sent in my computer for repair and they replaced the motherboard, ram, hardrive, proccesor, and videocard. The technician assured that if I experienced another one of these errors it would be due to a software problem since they replaced most hardware. These errors would happen most often in digital art programs(Adobe Photoshop, Illustrator, and Cinema 4D) and they would also happen often whenever I would run SpyBot S&D. I got rid of Spybot and "backed up" my digital art programs onto a cd. Now, my question is the following: Can software cause bluescreen errors? I thought that bluescreen errors would only occur because of a problem in hardware? I'm not sure wether to re-install the 3 digital art programs that I have in the cd or wether to "reacquire" these programs incase the ones I have backed up on CD are faulty? I find it hard to beleive that all 3 digital art programs could be causing these bluescreens. Not to mention the problems I got whenever I would run SpyBot S&D. I'm just not sure wether to risk installing those 3 digital art programs that I have on cd or to reacquire them.

Also, when I received my computer it would seem as if they reloaded Windows XP Home and used the Service Pack 2 edition. Is Service Pack 2 really all that bad? Answer:???___Few Simple Questions------???

wow, how much did you spent to replace the whole computer? (if it's free, tell me where you got the computer )

well, derived from your later paragraph, your using windows xp (you should say this up front).. and i have yet seen a "typical" bluescreen error in windows xp (can you tell me what exactly is written on the error screen?)..

one of the possible cause "might" be a memory problem, as graphical program makes intensive use of memory, you prob need to upgrade your RAM to 512mb - 1 GB?

service pack 2 is not "Bad", and it's mature enough (i hope) now to be installed as long as you keep updating i wouldn't follow right up with a new service pack within 1 month of it's release though.. as it's usually make your computer worse, but after the month, alot of bugs have been fixed, then it may benefit your computer

mmm.. yes, windows firewall comes with service pack.. the firewall is pretty good for incoming packets, but i recommend you get a thirdparty firewall, as ubiquitous software is just too easy to be comprimised (mainly because of hte sheer number of people trying..), i don't see any preceiveble difference in speed when turned on

I'm working in 'safe mode' right now. We've been snowed in for over 4 days now and I've been staying at my son's house & had my laptop over there. Never had any problem using it over there and bringing it back home before and using it back and forth. Until now. After sliding on ice into a ditch, and having a terrible day getting home, I finally got here safely (thank goodness) unloaded my car, and plugged in my computer. Went to sign on, using the same password I've used for years and got the message: "The Group Policy Client service failed the logon. Access is denied". I'm the only user on this computer. I'm the administrator and never had a problem before using this laptop anywhere.

Nothing works. I've tried clicking 'change password' and it tells me I need a 'floppy disk' to do that?????

So, I signed in using 'safe mode' and checked a few things and noticed two other issues while trying to find the solution to this problem. One is an exclamation mark under System Management that says:

"Consumer IR Devices is not working properly" and the drivers cannot load properly.

I don't even know what that is?

The other is another explanation mark under Network Adapters next to "Microsoft ISATAP Adapter #3"

Both say the drivers cannot load because of a 'Code 31' if that helps?

Hi

I will try to give you 3 simple answers. ;)

1. Many people here have reported about different issues after Sp3 installation. It is possible that you will have some functionality problems. I recommend you to use SP2 only. I do the same
2. Nero is one the best burning applications and you can use it on every Toshiba notebook model. No problems at all. I use it for years now.
3. As far as I know you can activate hibernation option in Toshiba Power saver utility.
- Start Toshiba power Utility
- Open ?Basic Setup? tab
- The last option there is ?System Hibernation?. Please enter check mark into small quadrangle near the hibernation symbol (arrow shows to the right into HDD).

Bye and good luck!

The relationship has a query and I have been told a few different codes but none of them work so I think that I'm missing something.

Thank you in advance, it'll help me a ton if I can get help on this. Please be specific I'm very new

hi there ,,,,

I got few questions concerning hardware terminology , some new terms has evolved nowadays...which i'd like someone to explain them for me ....

1) Is there any difference between P4 & Northwood processors ?

I used to knew that both r the same , but i saw on gigabyte website that a certain mobo supports P4 and doesnt support Northwood ....so they must be different

2) Whats the Hyper-threading technology ?

There are now both processors and mobo that supports hyper-threading tec. ..... SO >>> What does it mean that a processor (or a mobo) has Hyper-threading tec. wats the advantage ?

3)If anyone in the USA , wats the average price for the following :

a- 3.00 Ghz P4 processor ,FBS 800 , with HT technology.

b- A new mobo. supporting the previous processor , ex: Gigabyte GA-8PENXP

c- 256 Dual DDR chip .

Thanks for ur time...

Answer:Simple questions about hardware...

I believe Northwood is the code-name for the newest P4 (there have been several revisions). Hyper-threading technology allows the OS to treat the processor as two processors (if the OS supports it). Basically, you can assign programs/processes to each "processor" - the software must also support Hyper-threading. To check prices in the US, go to www.pricewatch.com

Hey Guys,
I just had a few questions (some hardware some software, not sure if this is the proper place tho since software questions too).
Hardware--
1)When someone says about bare-bone and putting the motherboard on cardboard/static mat, could you also use a static bag under the motherboard? Would that make a difference?
2) I read in a thread about a "green" SATA HD. What's it mean by "green"
Software--
1)Is Speccy better than Everest? I've never used Speccy I've always used Everest to get my Specs.
2)I had a copy of Everest (along with Malwarebytes and Registry Defense) that worked fine on my XP computer but now that I have Windows 7 they don't want to work. I got Everest from a torrent(if that causes this to be thrown out :-o) but I got the other two from a friend and I don't know how he got it. Any suggestions to why this doesn't work?
Thanks,
Spock96

Answer:Few simple questions I'd like answered.

Hi

1) No, I don't BELIEVE anti-static bags are as good as static mats, because I think the anti-static bags are mostly protected from static INSIDE. Maybe if you were to turn the anti-static bag inside out? Maybe someone else could jump in with this one, as I've never heard of using an anti- static bag like that.

2) The "green" SATA HDD is simply the series. Western Digital makes Caviars (for desktops) and Scorpios (for laptops). They have the Green, Blue, and Black drives. The Green drives are the cheapest, Blue is middle of the line, and Black are the best. I personally have two 2TB WD Caviar Blacks in my tower.

Software:
1) Speccy and Everest both have their besting moments with each other. It just depends on the hardware. I personally use Everest, though I've used Speccy once or twice.

2) This forum does NOT look well upon using pirated software, at all. I'm sorry, but you need to legitimately purchase a software license for something if you want to get help with getting it to work on your system.

Tried to search for answers to this but came up empty: 1: How do you highlight text to cut & paste on the touchscreen.  I assumed it would work like an iPhone, but it does not.  I'm sure this is a very stupid question...I used to build my own PCs but I can't keep up with touchscreen gestures, etc. 2.  After playing with scaling for the last couple days, I have most settings OK for my aging eyes with the ultra high resolution QHD+ display (barely)  However, I can't figure out how to increase the font size on the taskbar.  Its tiny!  Help? Thanks guys...great resource here.

Answer:Two (Simple?) Yoga 2 Questions

1. If you're in a Metro app or a Microsoft-made Desktop app (Office, IE, etc.) tap once on any word. Two circles will appear below the word. Drag them left or right to select more.In desktop apps from other manufacturers, you're **bleep** out of luck because they don't support the selection gesture. You can emulate mouse selection by tapping once on a word, holding down SHIFT, and then clicking to where you want to select to... but that's very imprecise compared to the actual selection gesture. Wait a few years and things might get better.2. Don't know, but you can run the Magnifier program if you really need to. Or collapse the taskbar to icons and turn off use small icons.

i am sure that if i pounded on google, or looked through a bunch of RFCs, or searched some books i could find the answers, but it is oh so much easier to ask, saves time and energy and saves me from boredom.

if i write a page, i then use a FTP program to upload it to the server that is hosting my site?
if i have used images that are on my computer useing something like <img src="C:/mediafiles/images/world.jpg" border="0">

i have told my page to referance my drive C and the file world.jpg
which is on my drive yes? so then when i use and FTP to send my page to my server, if someone veiws my page it can't come back to my hardrive looking for this pic, basicly makeing me a server? (make sense?)
so does an FTP program take the image to the server allso, or do i use a differant comand line? how does this work?

sorry if this is silly question but asking silly questions is how i figure it out.

no.. if you put "C:\pathtofile\filename.jpg" in an image source, it will attempt to look for it under their C: drive..

I'm just starting to learn how to use macros in excel. And I have a very simple project that I can't figure out. First of all, when I input three numerical values into three connected cells, I would like the macro to automatically move three values three columns over, and add the current static date in time. Secondly, when I input new values into the original cells, I would like the macro to move the previous values down three rows, and move the new values into their former position, and again add date and time. I hope that makes sense, I'm not sure I described it well. Any advice would be appreciated.

Throwing up a lot of messages and taking a long time to boot so was hoping to remove stuff to make things quicker.2) Again simple - I am assuming the slow log on etc was down to lack of memory. Hello Dell Community,
I own a Dell XPS 13 9360R received with Windows. I'm a linux user.

My first question is: is warranty still valid if I format the whole drive and install only Ubuntu?
If not, what partition do I have to keep (ie. Dell support, recovery etc)?

My second question: I received the laptop with German (QWERTZ) keyboard, however I would like a US one. Does it affect the warranty if I change the keyboard?

Thank you in advance.
Best,
Edouard

Answer:2 Simple warranty questions

Hi Edouard,
No, your warranty will still be valid unless the changes you make are directly responsible for the malfunctioning of the computer.
However, if the computer does develop a fault you might be asked to return it to it's original configuration for troubleshooting purposes.

I was printing a document ( the little address lable things ) thur my network, XP and a 98. I have the printer hooked to the 98, eats unreal amounts of resources on thre XP, anyhow, the network works fine for everything but it wouldnt stop printing, I had it setup to print three copies which it did then it just kept on going, I tried to stop it from the XP where the command to print came from, and it didnt work, I had to stop it from the 98.

Hence the questions,
1. Is this normal, or do I have some problem?
2. How do I fix it ?

1) I am currently running RedHat 9.0. I want to change the resolution on the desktop but when i change it to anything beyond the default setting of 800x600, it asks me to log off and restart my X server (the X-Windows shell). How do i do this?

2) Also, i purchased my copy of RedHat from a friend in a retail package. I cannot log onto the RedHat network when i use my existing account nor can log on when creating a new account. I believe it has something to do with the fact that i dont have the cd key anymore that would have come with what i am guessing is the "enterprise" edition of linux that i am using? Any support number i can call to get a new registration number is this sort of the same thing as microsoft with Windows XP?

3) The final question is networking in linux. I know that Samba is a translator for windows and linux networks. However, is there something like a networking neighborhood in linux? I want to be able to see my other machines as well as most importantly share some folders on the linux box with the rest of my network. I want to use this linux box as a file server. What are the best ways of doing this? I dont have much linux background but i use directions well

thanks!

Answer:A few simple linux questions:

1. I'm not sure how you are trying to change the resolution. Try pressing ctrl+alt++(ctrl, alt, and the plus key) or ctrl+alt+-(ctrl, alt, minus). This should cycle through the resolutions. To kill X, press ctrl+alt+backspace.
2. I've not used redhat in a long time so I have no idea on this.
3. LinNeighborhood is a good program that is similar to Network Neighborhood in windows.

2. Vlite doesnt have an option to add your own programs to the install (like chrome and the like or other customizations such as changing whats on the taskbar by default) does anyone know of how I can do this? I know OEMs can do it I'm just wondering if I can do the same.

Answer:2 simple install questions

1) In general, no, although you can turn off services and remove some Windows functionality with native tools - it is going to depend on what you want to do (remove files or simply not run services/programs - you can usually do the latter, but not easily the former).

2) This (and other things) can be done by creating an unattended installation using tools from the Windows Automated Installation Kit.

Hi, I have a few small and simple questions. I should know them, but I dont.

I have tried looking for the answers to these questions in my M/B manual but it does not answer them.

I am building a new system and I have placed a “Kingston 512MB 333MHz DDR PC2700 DIMM” stick in a memory slot. On my M/B there are 3 DIMM slots. DIMM1 and DIMM2 are purple and DIMM3 is green. The purple DIMM slots are next to each other and the green one is away from the purple ones.

Q1: I am correct in putting the memory stick in DIMM1 even though it is next to DIMM2? Or should I put the stick in the green slot?

Q2: If I am supposed to put the stick in a purple(DIMM1) slot then why does the boot screen say that the memory frequency say it is at 166MHz?

Is there a bios feature I need to mess with in order to get it to be 333MHz?

Answer:simple questions about memory

When you do install a new memory module, providing your motherboard supports the frequency you are installing, it should pick it up and run properly. If it doesn't, then just ensure that your motherboard supports memory modules of that frequency and then you can venture off to BIOS.
Some BIOS versions do entail that you modify that frequency, so just take a quick glance after you verify that your board supports the speed and you should be ok once it is set properly.
Mind you, if you have two modules on your board, the frequency will only run as fast as the slowest one you have installed.
So if you have one stick at 333mhz and another at 166mhz, the most you will get is the 166mhz, unless of course, you remove the slower module.

Define "Right Program."

Why is W-7 better than W-8 ?. Is it better than XP ?. Why ?.Click to expand...

Well that is open to personal preference! Windows 7 is a local OS, meaning that everything that you run on Win7 resides on the local disk. (Hard Drive) Windows 8 is a cloud OS, Yes it does reside on the hard drive, but it also means that it uses apps and programs that use the Internet as its access. Like Office 2013: The First True Cloud Office Suite XP is to be a discontinued OS. Meaning that it will no longer be supported by Microsoft.

Hi, Im just starting off on VB 4.0. Im trying to understand how the code side of things fits together, when you are writing the code are you writing it as a time line ie,
Perform this action to this string to this field then
this action to this section to this field or,
is it more mathematical, Like where it sets the Rules by which the enviroment obeys and the Variants are changed accordingly, I figure that once that makes a bit more sense i might be able to get around syntax.

Answer:Simple VB 4.0 Code Questions

Heres some code with explanations

Code:

Dim MyVar //Creates a variable to hold a value

MyVar = 1 // Assingns the number 1 to MyVar

MyVar = MyVar + 1 //adds one to MyVar

[code]

Thats how VB works. And many other languages. I dont know the print statement in VB but in Perl you could print the answer to the screen like this

[code]
Print MyVar

Not to tough?

If you want conditional statements you need to do like this

Code:

VB

If MyVar > 2 or MyVar < 1 then
Do This
Else
Do This
End If

Hello,

I recently purchased a new computer (XP - Media Center Edition, Version 2002, Service Pack 2), and am hoping to connect it to my old one (Win98SE). I had my old computer for about 6 years, so I built up a lot of files and programs, and I want to transfer them to my new system.

So far I have been doing this by getting some of my old CDs I had formatted for writing, and copying from my computer, to the CD, then putting the CD into the new computer, and copying it to my documents there.

Normally I would be content with this method, simple and archaic though it be, but for some reason, my CDs don't gain new space after I erase the old files. So a CD that started out with 650MB of free space would only have 23MB the next time I tried to repeat the process. I'm guessing the CD keeps the files I deleted in case I want to recover them (or something). Since I only have 3 formatted CDs, I cannot move just some 60MB each cycle (considering that I have some 5-10GB of information I want to move, and I have to share the monitor between the two, which means unplugging it, and then plugging it into the other)

So I figured, why not just hook them up now, since I am probably going to do it later anyway. Of course, I have no idea how to do this. XP has a networking wizard with it, but not the '98. The '98 just has a wizard for connecting it to another computer through a USB 1.1 connection, which from I hear is incredibly slow. (Does anyone have any specific speeds... Read more

First time I've done this so tips would be appreciated?ThanksJohn

Answer:Upgrade motherboard: simple questions

Hi John. The Asus A7V600-X looks fine. I'm using an ASUS A7V8X-X and Ive been very pleased with it. Changing the processor over is quite straightforward, but you will have to remove the heatsink first. This will take quite a lot of pressure to depress the clips, so you need to be very firm but also very careful. Similarly for refitting to the new motherboard. You must also remove every trace of heatsink compound from the interface surface of the processor - that is the centre rectangular bit, and also from the surface of the heatsink. Even a small bit of compound can stop the surfaces mating together - I know because I burnt out a processor once by getting it wrong. I found a cloth moistened with meths got rid of the final traces of compound. You will then need new compound for refitting the heatsink.

Hi,

Recently upgraded to Win10. Several teething problems, like some incompatible software, mostly due to lack of adequate updating by the software maker or provider (a main culprit being Hewlett Packard, which was unable to adapt its central utility "Solution Centre" to Windows 10 - and even admitting it, saying that users must wait for a special MS update; however, I've given up waiting meanwhile). Otherwise everything works fine, except that I don't see much improvement over Win7 - and like the aesthetics of 7 more.

However, I encountered two problems, for which I could not find a solution.

So, how can I overcome this quirk?

Hi, file associations have always been for the users to choose. A change from Win 7, introduced in Win 8, is that programs can no longer set their own associations.

What I want to do is reduce piles of older CDs by ripping my favorite tracks to just a few. Hi, file associations have always been for the users to choose. A change from Win 7, introduced in Win 8, is that programs can no longer set their own associations.

There are several ways to set your defaults.

The traditional control panel is still available
(Windows key + X, Control Panel, Default Apps)
- and this is useful when changing defaults via Win 10's Settings doesn't quite do the job- e.g. http for hyperlinks.

Open with (in the right click context menu) is another way, as ever, albeit a bit different to what you're used to.

Default Apps - Choose in Windows 10 - Windows 10 Forums

Settings, search for 'default' is the Win 10 way.

What i want to know is....

Can i get outlook to start automatically when i run windows and prompt me to login? I'm sure i can, but before i actually log in will people be able to see the emails I've previously sent/received?

I'm guessing that when u hit send/receive it downloads it to the computer, which is fine. But i share this computer and I want to make the information where it is stored password protected.

I tried to set Outlook 2010 to not remember my password and it didn't work. I configured the account to remember, than went back and unchecked the "Remember my password option". Now when you hit "Next" in the process, both of the tests fail, the log on, then the test message.

When I send/receive i WANT to enter my password every time, but can people still see the messages I've already received and sent before??

Can i password protect outlook before it completely opens on startup?

Thanks for all responses and valid, on topic information!!

Answer:Simple Outlook 2010 Questions

Also, i setup rules for my emails that come in for a certain word in the "subject' or "Body" to go in to a certain folder....

Do i really have to hit Run Rules every time to do this or can i get it to do it automatically?

Hello all. and thanks in advance.
My question is simple but answers all seem to not read the question.
XP, with all updates installed.
the question is about PnP only, nothing else
its not about me finding say drivers from Intel for there  chips, I know all about that, worked there 6 years.
when the XP platform sees a device not supported on the local cache or on the install CD , PnP then goes
to (or the like) download.microsoft.com
I have wusu offline updater 9.2.1 running now, and see that many files are missing, but that is not my question.
I do see updates are there now, and tested a bench XP and got 159 updates,
but drivers, this post is ONLY about drivers, that MS aways had online. (in your cloud, etc)
my question is, when the users XP goes to the INTERNET (have fast FIOS here) do all the MS, WHQL DRIVERs
STILL EXIST THERE,  OR DID MS SHUT DOWN THOSE FILES. surely this simple question can be answered.
yes, im fully aware no new drivers were added.  but what about 2001 to early 2014 driver there, are the gone
in whole or in part, ?
thanks for any help on this  question,  I did searches for days on this and got nothing.
I can not search inside MS servers, like one can on FTP servers,  so am asking due to that fact.
I almost never post questions, in most cases i can find anything I want to know. (related to PCs)
Just this one simple question.

I've got 2 500gb hard drives that I'm planning on setting up in a RAID 0 with my Windows Vista machine and have three really quick questions.

First question: Once setup, will both drives show up as one drive under my computer?

Second Question: Do I have to reformat my main drive drive to pull this off? I've got about 400gbs of files on my main drive, including my OS, and I don't have the money currently to buy an extra External Drive. I do back up my stuff, but it's done threw Mozy online and would take forever (I could only download around 9gbs a day) to back up everything.

Third Question: I've never done this before, is there anything really important that I need too know?

Thanks much,

Josh

Hello O wise ones.

question 1: I have 2 email addresses - I have set up 2 different email accounts in Outlook 2002 with their own separate sets of folders inbox etc... How do i get email sent to one address to go to one email inbox and email for the other address to go intothe other inbox. Currently I can only select one place where incoming email goes. This seems rediculous to me but it is MS we are talking about. HELP there must be a way.?

question2: How do I get HTML mail to show up automatically when I open a mail message, not in an attachment like it does currently?

So I'm looking into building a new PC. The video of the exact PC i want to build is here : http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QUdt9NDcVNw . So after you boot up the PC, what are you supposed to do in the bios? (you can skip to the VERY end to see what im talking about). Should the Windows 7 install CD already be in the CD/DVD drive? What are drivers and how am I supposed to get them on my PC? How do wifi adapter cards work, and will i need one or can i go with something like this : http://www.amazon.com/Edimax-EW-781...=UTF8&qid=1377480255&sr=8-1&keywords=wifi+usb ? Will a already used Windows Vista install CD work? If anyone could answer all or some of these questions i would be very grateful. Thanks!

Hi there everyone.. I am a beginner in database design.. I only want to create a database for my personal use.. nothing sophisticated.. here is a brief description of the database:

I am a physician and want to record the patients's data.. I only have 2 tables

tblPatients: has a PtKey field (autonumber).. and name and other personal data fields...
tblVisits: has a PtKey field for relation and a visitnumber and visitdate fields and other fields with the visit details

The idea is.. i record a patient data and each time the patient comes i put data in a new visit.. so basically every patient has many visits.. thus i created a one-to-many relation between both tables based on PtKey field...

I have a form for viewing patients data..

Question is: I want to create a command in that form called "New Visit" that will allow me to add a new visit.. i want that to automatically generate the number of visit by an increment of 1 after the last patient visit and to open the form for new visit (i can create that) with the patient name and then proper number of visit...
in other words: how to get the database to automatically generate a new visit number for each specific patient on clicking that command and to relate that to that specific patient..

Thanks in Advance

Answer:Simple Microsoft Access questions

It already does it if you have a relationship in the visits table that inserts the primary key of the patient for each visit.

Hello lpatrick here. Back in the day I was really sharp with main frame, sat data, all sorts of networks, pc's and all supporting gear. After retiring from in 1993 after 20 years (72-93) in the military and 13 years in civilian work I developed a number of neurological issues. One is loss of cognitive ability. Another is short term memory loss. The whopper is Complex Seizure Disorder. So anyway, I get confused easily, forget easily and sometimes need guidance. I hope not to be a pain but sometimes it may seem that way. Here is a bit of dark humor. Right before and during Desert Storm I was Section Chief for a mobile pc network. I proved the viability of moving networks and operators anywhere in the world and successfully carring out data missions. That is when the network programmer's back in Virginia could keep up the paces, LOL. Of course now that is far back in the stone age. Anyway, I'm glad to be here and want to be a positive contributor to this forum.

Thank you

I'm about to try to delete two occurrences of a single key (vnd.ms.radio) which seem to be causing my windows xp home edition sp2 update to fail, no matter what else I try to do. I've tried everything else, incl the MS article on how to reset permissions so that I don't get the "access is denied" error when the update tries to delete these keys itself. That hasn't worked, so manually taking a sledge hammer to it is about all I know to try.

My problem is, I don't have a good set of instructions for how to delete a key entirely. Do I use Edit/Delete once I've located the desired key (and it's highlighted in the file breakdown on the left hand side of my regedit screen)? Or just highlight the registry key and hit the delete key? Or is there a different way?

Also, one of the two occurrences seems to be broken down further into three sub-key layers. Do I delete the highest level and take care of it all that way, or do I expand the highest level key entirely first, and then delete each layer one layer at a time?

Finally, once I've deleted both occurrences, do I reboot (start/turn off/restart) for the deletions to take effect, and then try the sp2 update one last time?

Thx...

clueless Tom

Answer:Simple help needed with regedit; 3 questions

What happens when you delete the entries you want? They are gone permanently, ther eis no undo the deed is done and you might be kaput or so your computer. Actually you can delete these in the ways you described and it will be done.

The one thing you have to do before these are deleted is backup your registry. This is a must and has to be done. If you do not you stand a chance of the computer OS going kaput!

Here is a good registry backup for you and it is easy to run it is called ERUNT the other one is the optimizer

I installed Simple System Tweaker and applied the recommended tweaks to my Windows 7 PC after cleaning and clearing out much of the bloatware this past week. Here's my question:

Once I backed up the registry and clicked on "Apply Tweaks," I assume that these adjustments remain in effect until I click on "Restore."

There is little documentation or help information delivered with the Simple System Tweaker, so to ensure I was using this application correctly and visited the Tweaking.com website. The most I could find about this application was the following:

The program also supports a silent command so you can run the program silently.

Set the options you want, which will save to the settings.ini file. Run the program with /silent command and the program will apply based on your saved settings then close.Click to expand...

However, I can find no indication of this capability on the application's interface. For anyone who uses Simple System Tweaker, do I simply "Apply Tweaks" and assume they take effect? Until such time I decide to restore to original settings, the application simply sits in the background and is available for restoration and nothing else at this point. Am I interpreting this correctly?

Thanks.

Answer:Simple System Tweaker - Questions

When the program is ran (sic) for the first time it will backup all the regkeys it changes into a backup.reg file. This way if you ever want to put things back the way they where a double click of that reg file and your (sic) good to go.Click to expand...

Source: http://www.tweaking.com/content/page/simple_system_tweaker.html

Your interpretation is correct. The registry is imaged then the tool is run; if you wish to revert back, simply click the backup reg file that was created.

So, I'm selling my laptop and I want to be safe and shread my disk. I'm going to use DBAN, people seem to like that one. I understand the process of burning it and starting the pc with that but after that process is complete what do I do? When I turn on my pc will everything be gone where I can't even get to the BIOS? I need to reinstall windows onto the disk and I'm unsure of how to do so since my copy of windows is on a partition on the disk. If someone could please explain this to me or point me to a guide I would be very greatful.

Thank you

Answer:Shredding my disk - need a few simple questions answered please

If you have a restore partition on your disk, there should be
a utility that allows you to make a set of restore disks.
What model laptop?

Most computers these days don't come with a bios overlay
on the hard drive,so it shouldn't affect the bios.
Might want to check the manufacturer website support section though.

Hi,

I was wondering what the hazards are for building you own computer, e.g. fire hazards, etc.

Basically, I was wondering what the worst case scenario is, e.g., if assemble d very poorly, is there a risk of fire, or just a risk of wasting the CPU?

Also, what are the things that one can do that creates those risks, e.g. applying too much thermal paste, etc.

This thread is basically a reassurance to someone so it would be appreciated if you tried to explain everything to someone who is not exactly a computer enthusiast (you know what I mean...)

Thanks a lot,

Van

Ok basically im getting a few (something like 2-4) low powered celerons (266Mhz each), what i want to do is make a low powered file server for my other computers.

Would it be best to
A) Put all 4 HDDs and RAM into one computer.
B)Put 2HDDs in each of 2 computers (making 2 file servers.)
C)Just have 4 file servers.

I have two extra sticks of 32mb RAM.
Im pretty sure all of the ones im getting will be Celeron 266Mhz's each with 64Mb RAM.
Im guessing that each will probably have 3 DIMM slots (mabye 2, but the coputer we took apart at school without the teach knowing had 3).
I also have NIC,Cd-ROM and FDD and spare cables.

Thanks in advance,

Hey everyone, I've just recently purchased a new 150 gig External Harddrive (the specs of it are in my profile, it's a generic HD though) from ebay, it works fine and run perfectly. It's a great piece of machinary, but alas, I have a few questions as I'm somewhat a newbie when it comes to externals in general, so here it goes:

- How apt are these externals to failing? My PC is almost 3 years old, should I be more concerned about the internals or this new sucker?

- I'm looking to store movies, music, documents, and pictures on it, but I was wondering if I could possibly run games on it as well? I doubt it's a good idea, but was just curious.

- How long should/can I leave it on? I always have my computer running, the HD itself never really gets hot at all, but is this dangerous?

Thanks guys! That's it for now...

Definitely not less likely to fail than an internal, as these are infact internal drives sitting in an external enclosure. The problem is that being external, these drive are more likely to be knocked over, jossled during travel and dropped more than a drive in a PC, so the risk of damage is greater.

Tetris? Really this depends on your connection, a drive connect through USB 1.1 is not going to transfer well. If you can connect through USB2.0 or Firewire800 you might stand a chance to play off them.

The external harddrive has the same lifetime hour limit as an internal one. Should be fine to leave it on.

Title says it all.

Recently I've been thinking of hooking up my gaming laptop to a docking station and buying a 40inch monitor or even a 23inch 3d monitor. Doing some research, I came across videos on youtube regarding curved monitors and multiple screens. I have been amazed. They looked really cool. Anyway, so I'm wondering. Besides it looking cool, why would a person play on three screens when they can just look at one? Wouldn't it be annoying to actually look to the left or right compared to just looking at one screen? Just wanted to get some opinions about this in case I'm missing out on something.

Answer:Pc Gamers.. simple questions about multiple monitors. Why use them?

There can be numerous reasons really. For things like FPS type games it gives them a bigger field of view (FOV), invariably they will see someone to their sides before that person sees them giving them an advantage. They may use one screen for games and the second screen for other apps, maybe monitoring voice chat software, surfing the net for something etc. There are many applications but at the end of the day alot of it comes down to cost and personal preference, I have never had a dual screen setup and I have been gaming for many years.

Ok here is what I am planning to do, take my 2.5gb hdd from the computer running win98 and put it into my other system running winxp home.
Now what do I do I first have to uninstall it in the bios or in windows?
How do I physically identify which drive is the 2.5gb?
Before I put it into the XP system do I have to tell it I am going to do so?
How do I set all this primary, secondary slave stuff?
Will all my drive automatically go up one? (i.e. D: will become E: etc)
Do I have to install any drivers or is windows so incredible it will find them itself?
Should I format it before hand or will it do that automatically too?

Beyond taking the obvious steps of changing the network name, admin password, possibly turning off SSID broadcasting, and using the highest bit key I can, what else do I need to do to secure my wireless network? I'll be moving to an apartment complex with a lot of fellow students, so the risk of a computer savvy person wanting to access my network is somewhat higher. Should I try to find out how to lock down the network to only those MAC addresses I actively use? Is that worth it? I'm using a Linksys 802.11b+g router... one computer is connected by ethernet cable and the other accesses it wirelessly.

More simply.. when I access one computer, I can easily open the computer and see some shared folders, printers, ect. However, when I try and connect from the other computer to the previous one, it asks for a password. How do I tell where this password is set and how do I change it? Do I need to secure anything in Windows? I'm using Win XP Pro Sp1 on both computers.

Thanks!

Answer:Securing & using my wireless/wired network.. simple questions

MAC filtering wouldn't hurt either, but encryption (WPA if possible) is the best thing you can do to lock down access.

Otherwise, just be smart -- don't share drives to "Everyone" lightly (unless it's firmly locked down to read-only and there's no embarassing data, for instance).

As for passwords: I'll assume you've got NTFS partitions (if not, convert your drives). Also, disable Simple File Sharing if it's active (In any folder, Tools->Folder Options->View->SFS -- in the scroll box, at the bottom).

At this point, passwords are determined by user accounts on the target machine plus NTFS permissions (actual file access) and share permissions (general allowances). For instance, if "Everyone" has write share access but not write NTFS access, they can't write -- you should still keep it consistent, though. Both sets of permissions are accessed in Shares/Security on the context menu of a folder.

These may be some of the easiest questions to answer but I just wanted to confirm a few things:

I use Word 2010 and I want to send some documents to someone with, I believe, Word 2003. The docs contain lots of pictures and graphics and also some unusual fonts including fonts from other languages that she may not have. Will these come through okay, and if not is there a way to send it without converting it to a pdf? The reason I ask is that a couple of years ago we tried the same thing and she said the doc had a bunch of strange numbers in it.

Also in Word 2010 what is the easiest way to reduce file size? I've tried zipping but the difference is negligible. The bulk of the size is from pictures. Is the easiest way in options -> advanced -> image size and quality - discard editing data? I have it set to 220 ppi at the moment, is this the same as 220 dpi?

There's a few more questions there than I originally intended, thank you very much for any help.

Answer:Solved: Very simple questions about Word 2010 compatability

If you dont need the recipient to edit the doc (just read it), it will be easiest to PDF it.
because...
If you send from 2010 to 2003, you need to save it as old style word doc (available in the save box), which I assume you do as it is readable when it gets there.
As for fonts, if they are strange and unusual fonts, if the recipient does not have the font installed on the computer they open the doc on, it will not show up properly (Word will convert to a general, pretty useless font).
For pictures- reduce in size at source if possible. Take the jpeg and reduce it in size, reduce colours used (16 million down a stage or two will make no real difference in quality), save as lower res etc- this should reduce it considerably and will reflect in the word doc size.

dpi is dots per inches (as seen on the screen) and ppi is points per inch- hoew big when printed. generally, about the same if you stick with defaults. that is not to say they are the same, but win will do the hard work scaling for you.

Hope thats useful

Hello all, and thanks very much in advance.

I have some photographs and I want to print them ( 4 to a page) as part of a manuscript with a hundred pages of text. The printing would be done on a color laser printer (not a photo printer, just a good laser) at a copy shop. The images will be on a separate page from the text, but each page of images would have a few sentences of text as captions.

How can I get the best quality images? ...
I never did this before, but here is what I've been doing:

1. Scan each photo at 300 dpi as a TIF file.
2. Using Photoshop, I made a blank 8.5 x 11" page at 300 dpi. Then I opened up some of the scanned photos, and added them as layers to the 8.5 x 11 inch page.
3. Using the text tool, I added some text.

Questions:
--Do I need to worry about which mode to use: RGB or CMYK?
--Should I save the final file for printing as tiff file, or a jpeg, or a pdf ?
--Anything else I should know or do before taking these files to the copy shop?

THANKS again!
... RB

Answer:Simple Questions: Preparing Photographs for Laser Printing

First thing I'd do is talk to the print shop and ask them what format they'd prefer you to give them.

What program are you using to produce the hundreds of text pages? It might be better to place the photographs on the relevant pages, resize them as needed and add the text, so they'd be in sequence within the total manuscript - rather than creating separate pages in PS.

Having said that, general comments are:

Resolution: scanning the photos at 300dpi is fine (as long as you scan them larger or same size as your final desired printed size).

Image file type: tif is fine - a jpg would also be OK and would be a smaller file. As long as you don't keep re-saving the jpg you won't notice any loss of quality in the image.

Mode: talk to the print shop. Standard colour lasers print CMYK so the image will have to be converted to CMYK to achieve the most accurate result. But professional printers are used to converting RGB images into CMYK as part of the process, so ask the print shop whether you should do it. Bear in mind that the printed image will look different from the RGB image you see on the monitor, although PS allows you to preview CMYK which may help a little, depending on how well your monitor is calibrated.

File type: if the program you're using to create the manuscript can handle CMYK I'd add the images directly onto the relevant pages and supply the whole thing in that program's format (assuming the print shop can handle it) - o... Read more

I came across a thread in the MG hardware forum about erasing a hard disk. Not wanting to hijack or resurrect that thread has led me to this, to question some things

I've been looking on the internet, and this has told me that

A Quick Format erases only the File Allocation Table of a disk (which is what I had always believed), but left the actual data intact.

A Full Format does what, precisely ? I have read that it is simply a Quick Format with a chkdsk , but I suspect that it is actually more than this. The Microsoft article I found on this was with reference only to installing operating systems. Can anyone direct me to a good, reliable article on this ?

In the MG article I was reading, it was apparent that CCleaner (which I have) had a good routine for permanently erasing all disk files so that reading them was impossible. For individual files I have come across a program called Sdelete by Sysinternals (Microsoft). Both of these offer the facility for "multiple passes". If you have a program that writes 0s to every location so that when read you get 0s back every time, why is there any need for "multiple passes" :confused

With reference to this post, I am Windows XP Home/SP3

Hey there, I recently ran into a rather annoying problem with my Acer Aspire 7560G laptop. First off, I hope this is the correct section to be asking question about this particular model, if not please forgive me. Also, for TL;DR scroll down to bottom. The issue I was having was that programs would fail/refuse to launch. Opening Zune, Steam, or even just trying to open a picture in Windows Photo Viewer either did nothing at all, or the program would look like it was starting only to then disappear completely (sometimes, but not often, accompanied by an error message saying the program has stopped working). The laptop still boots up fine, I can browse my directories, acces the internet, run some programs but not others (Bluestacks Android Emulator works fine, for example). I decides the easiest thing for me to do was to factory reset. Boy was I mistaken. I have backed up all of my personal files to an external hard drive, so the laptop is ready to be reset. First problem I ran into was that doing anything during start-up prompted me for a BIOS password. I didn't set one, so it must have been the default, and it was not really all that hard to get rid off (I used a bootable USB drive with clnpwd, just followed instructions). So then I got into the BIOS, but every time I get alt+f10 to work and load up the recovery manager, it prompts a message stating I need to wait for the OS to load. After which the laptop boots, and nothing changes. I found out I probably... Read more

Customer support was no help, in the end they just referred me to a local retailer and gave me an estimate on time and money it would take to get things resolved. Too long and too expensive, but that's just my opinion. I'm just going to go ahead and clean install my OS. Found this mirror that has the ISO files archived: http://mirror.corenoc.de/digitalrivercontent.net/ I'll verify the SHA-1 checksum just to be sure, but they should be perfectly clean. With Windows 7 USB/DVD Download tool (https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/download/windows-usb-dvd-download-tool?wa=wsignin1.0) I can create a bootable USB drive, and after that it'll simply be a matter of following instructions. Kinda muffed that I couldn't get this issue resolved, but hey, I was planning on factory resetting anyways. I'll get rid of all  bloatware and possible malware in one fell swoop this way, so whatever works, right? I've downloaded everything from http://www.acer.com/ac/en/GB/content/drivers for my device (because there, my SNID did work) to be extra safe. ISO file is almost done downloading, I'll probably make one final post here when everything is set and done. That way, should anyone ever find this thread, they'll know what might work. Thanks for your efforts, but alas, they were of no avail.

I'm some what new at building computers

first off how come when I see inside a computer the ram is in a certain type of color slot? and then then the other color is left empty. does that mean I can only use half the slots in a mother board?

and while I'm at it, this iceQ + radeon HD 5750 has an interface of PCI Express 2.1 X16 will it be compatible with a motherboard that has PCI Express 2.0 X16? http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814161316

Answer:Solved: 2 simple questions on ram and a video card interface

Answer:simple windows mediea player question/questions

If you click in the Library View > Library then double click Folder it will list the folders with the music you have thats in your Library.

arrowed are the two bits to click and the resulting page is a total albums and total songs/tracks.

As for lyrics, open WMP up then click F1 and in the help and support search box type lyrics and it will give you some steps for adding lyrics to songs.

Read more

hey guys, i wasnt sure where to ask this, but here it is:

Basically i read on the internet that you can take a camera flash and its pretty much a "stun-gun".

i made it, and sure as hell it HURTS.

I just need to know a few things about it

1. How many amps is a AA (1.5v) battery?
2. Does a voltage multiplyer increase the amps?
3. What does the uF rating on a capacitator mean.

The "cap" on this circuit is 330v 120uF. i believe that this is somehow related to how long it can store a charge for :S.

4. Would adding more caps increase the power, or would it need another battery to full charge them?

Thanks,
ph30nix!

Answer:Simple taser questions, caps, amps, volts etc?

You should really look up some basic things from a book before sticking electrodes into people. You don't want to go to jail for manslaughter, do you? Suicide is your own business of course.

1. This is a pointless question. Any voltage source can deliver from 0 to x amps depending on the resistance of the load. X depends on the construction of the voltage source and is again an absolutely pointless number since shorting something is a very extreme condition and has nothing to do with reality. I suppose you get something in the order of 10 amps out of an AA battery if you short it.
2. See answer 1
3. It is microfarads. Faras is the unit used for measuring capacitance.
4. This all depends on the capacitance you have already and the kind of power source you have.

I am a Photographer and have about 100 gigs of pictures. One question is since my hard drive is almost halfway full, if I delete a bunch of programs and all of those pictures would it run faster?

Second question is, I am really scared to delete these and an external crash so I was going to buy two but because of how they are price wise I would rather just buy one, do they crash alot? And if they do is there any way that I could use the chip inside as a slave on my hard drive and get my pictures back? What is a good reccomendation and price of a good drive from 100-400gb?

Thanks!
April

Question: Noisy TravelStar

My PowerBook has an IBM TravelStar 20GN (DJSA-220), and every once in a while it makes a loud "CLANK" noise. I've used two computers with TravelStars from that family and they both do the same thing. But I was wondering what the noise is. Thanks!-John

Answer:Noisy TravelStar

The clank can be the early signs of hard disk death. I would download the diagnostics from the IBM website and check the drives function pronto.

I've been asked to destroy the data on an old IBM Travelstar Hard Drive. I have a USB 2.0 to IDE adapter which also has an adapter for laptops but this hard drive has a (PC Card??) connector instead. Is there an adapter i can buy to connect the drive to the USB-IDE adapter? The laptop is dead by the way....Also are there any requirements for disposing of the drive?

Answer:IBM TravelStar to IDE Convertor Wanted

The drive is physically identical to click hereBut it doesn't have all those pins (i'd be ok if it did!). Instead it has a black plasti stip with the pins bent on to it....
