Jacks not detecting headset

Question: Jacks not detecting headset

I recentley did a complete reinstall of Windows 10 onto my computer, deleting everything else on the drives along with it. However now when I plug my headset into either the front or rear jacks Windows is not detecting anything. I have installed the newest Realtek HD Audio drivers but am I missing anything else? Or is it a more serious problem? Ty in advance.

Preferred Solution: Jacks not detecting headset

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

If you have a headset with two jacks is it possible to put the mic jack of the headset in one device (PC) and the headphones/audio jack in another device (e.g. TV) with no other cables or any extras?

Answer:Headset jacks in two different devices

It really depends on how long the cable is and how close the TV is to the computer.

Hello. My audio / headset jacks on the front panel of my PC running Windows 8.1 will not work. I had the Beats Audio Panel installed and was using the IDT High Definition Audio Codec and had rear sound through my speakers only. After checking your forum, I unistalled that driver (and Beats Audio) and installed the High Definition Audio Device driver only (no Beats Audio) and both rear jacks work. So, I can get sound and recording in the rear, but not it the front. I hope you can help me. Thank you.

The headset works fine, he can hear everything perfectly, but the microfone doesn't work. I can see, that he is not the first, who has this problem, but now I have read most of the questions/answers and I still haven't found out, what to do to solve it.

The computer is running on a Vista Home Premium 32-bit.

Hope to hear from someone who can help.

Answer:Creative Fatal1ty Headset (Jacks, not USB) Microphone not working

Hi JBrito and welcome to Vista Forums

Check that you are plugging the mic into the correct socket - it should be coloured pink - and that it isn't set to mute or that the levels are too low. You might also need to enable mic boost. Also check the headset - is there a mute switch (or similar) on there to disable the mic?

i've been having this issue for a while now, my headset hasn't been detecting. it is connected via the 3.5mm headphone jack. this is a problem i've had with every pair of headphones/headsets i've tried, so it isn't an issue with the model. the only reason i haven't noticed this issue until as of recent is because i've had a USB connected headset. now that i need to use the 3.5mm jack, nothing is detecting. i've tried to fix this issue, and all that has happened is that my headset shows up as "Speakers (Realtek High Definition Audio)", and will not register my microphone. any help?
note that these three screenshots are taken whilst the headset is plugged into the 3.5mm headphone jack (the only connector that came with the headset)

Alright so I have a BRAND new Sony Vaio laptop with Windows 7, it's model # is VPCCW21FX. I got it only a week ago.
I play games so I connect with Ventrilo, but with this laptop it is not detecting my headset. It's a standard Logitech headset that connects through those pink and green jacks on the side of my laptop. It only recognizes the laptop's built-in microphone, however. This is what I've tried to get my headset's mic to work:

1. Disabling the built-in microphone. The laptop still did not recognize that I had a separate microphone plugged in through the jack.

2. Updating sound card's driver / rollback to previous, to see if it might work. It did not.

3. I tried to use the Ease of Access -> Install new microphone. The laptop would only still detect the built-in microphone, not the one that was plugged in through the jack.

I know it's not the headset's fault because it was working perfectly fine in another computer just this morning, and I tested it on my brother's computer a few minutes ago. His computer detects my headset. Yes I have the plugs in the correct holes, and no there are no drivers since this isn't a USB headset. The laptop KNOWS that something is plugged into the mic jack because it mutes the laptop's built-in microphone once there's something in it, but no sound is detected.

As you can see from the image, the Realtek microphone is the built-in one. My headset is currently plugged in, but ... Read more

Hi, I recently bought a new headset due to one of the ears falling apart...

My old one was USB with a 3.5mm cable and worked perfectly fine. The new one I got has no USB and uses the green and pink cables. I've plugged them in and it seemed as if they were working well but I realised they're not actually picking up the sound from the microphone, they're playing my computers sounds.

I looked through other forums and found people saying that it may be a driver issue, so I updated and got the Realtek HD, which then showed the Stereo Mix in my devices. Basically what's happening is that Stereo Mix and Microphone are both playing volume at the same level and acting as if they're the same. I've tried disabling Stereo and keeping Mic but it still plays the computers sounds. I've tried vice-versa too. The "Speakers" device is also playing at the same level of volume.

And then obviously since it's doing that, it's playing my computer sounds through Skype.

Basically what I want to achieve is have the headset playing sound but also be able to speak through skype without it playing the sounds I have on.

Also, there's a little switch on the cable to act as a "Mic Mute" switch, if the Mic is ON then the sound is fine, if I switch it to OFF the sound is very echo'd and distant.

Answer:New Headset, not detecting microphone.

First, stereo mix should be set as the default recording device. Then any input device that is used will be heard.

As Windows only allows one default audio playback device, separating sounds or what's heard may not be possible or is an option of the application program. I'm not familiar with Skype so I don't know what the options are or do.

I recently purchased a VersionTech EACH G2000 and I plugged it into my computer, but Windows does not recognize it in the playback nor recording devices. Help would be appreciated.

Answer:Windows not Detecting Headset

From what I see this has the two 3.5mm plugs and also a USB. I can't find out if the USB is just for the lights or if it is used for anything else in the headset. But, make sure you plug in everything.

As you have a Dell, and are you using the built in sound device? or have you added a separate sound card? If you added a separate sound card, you need to connect the front panel to the new sound card.

If you are using the built in sound device, try connecting the headset and mic to the rear connectors (Green and Pink) and see if it works there.

Windows will happily output sound to my headset but there is no input from the mic. I have a xonar dg as my soundcard.

The headset mic has been tested on a laptop and works
The microphone mute button the the headset cable is set correctly
The jack is correctly in
On plugging in (and fiddling with the jack) the mic I can see noise in CP/Sound window
It has been tested on the front panel, the soundcard jack & motherboard jacks
Drivers have been wiped and reinstalled
System restores had no effect
A reinstallation of windows keeping programs & settings had no effect
The mic is not muted or set too low in Control Panel / Sound
The mic in my webcam works correctly (USB)
Connections inside the case are not loose
Toggling the front mic option in Cp/Sound/Recording/(the mic)/properties/custom has no effect
I also managed to get the mic to work (badly) for a few seconds after windows reinstalled. After I plugged in the headphone jack, the mic went dead and hasn't recovered since.

The mic has worked on this PC before, it seems some setting / software / driver is mucking up.

Answer:Windows not detecting input from headset

I noticed the sound card can only handle up to 48KHz/24-bit recording. However the CP sound options would let me set it above this. Lowering it to the acceptable level made no difference.

I can not get sound from my front jacks but I get sound through the internal speaker. If the rear jacks are enabled then they will work.

Device manager shows: 2 high definition audio devices (not realtek). One for the rear jacks and the other for ATPI Inernal ATPI jack. No playback device listed for the front jacks.

I tried uninstalling and reinstalling the devices but the front jacks wont install

Any suggestions would be appreciated! Thanks!

Answer:HP400 sound from internal speaker and rear jacks but not front jacks

High Definition Audio Drivers are only the generic, basic function, Windows installed sound drivers. They are not the full feature drivers that the hardware drivers provide. Check HP for a correct sound driver, if available.

ATPI (ATAPI) suggests this is an old Windows XP PC that was upgraded. There may not be any better drivers than the generic ones you have now.

Also check the front panel audio connection to the motherboard (reseat the connector).

Hello. As you can see in the title, I have 2 jacks in the front (1 audio 1 microphone) and 2 jacks in the back (also 1 audio 1 microphone). I would like to plug my headphones into the front jacks, and my speakers into the back jacks.

However, Vista doesn't seem to recognize my front jacks. When I plug in my headphones, there are no new devices detected or anything, and the audio keeps flowing through my speakers. When I unplug the speakers, the Realtek HD Audio playback device displays "Not connected".

So the only choice I have at the moment is going over to the back of my computer and switching cables, which is quite annoying.

Any help?

My playback devices are:

"Litexmedia Virtual Audio Cable" (9 of them)

"Realtek High Definition Audio" <<<SET AS DEFAULT

Realtek Digital Audio
"Realtek High Definition Audio"

Answer:Got front and back jacks, but Vista only recognizes the back jacks.

the topic pretty much says it. I bought myself a new headset(C-media headphone set or something) which uses a USB-port instead of an original sound-port-thing. The problem is, whenever I plug the headset in the USB-port pretty much nothing happens and I can't get the sound in the headset, it just stays in the speakers...

It used to be no problem when I used a headset with the sound-port on the motherboard to just change it. Anyone have any suggestions on what I might do? :(

edit: forgot to say that it works just fine after rebooting the computer.

Thank you

Answer:Problem with USB-headset(Can't switch between headset and speakers without rebooting)

Hi Foonksh,

Try going into the Control Panel and go into Sounds and Audio Devices. From there you can pick the default device for recording and for playback. In the playback section, set the headset as the default device instead of your speakers.

I am knew on the board. Greetings

I installed a NEW Logitech USB Headset 350 onto my Winows XP Service Pack 2 generic 'puter.

I now have no speaker sound and no option shows except the headset and "Modem #1 line ".

It sorta looks like I have no speaker drivers .

Unplugging the headset does not help.

Anybody know how to fix this problem so I am not forced to wear a headset for audio ALL OF THE TIME ?

Answer:Installed new USB Headset NOW no speaker audio even if I unplug the headset

Yeah, my USB headset was a little weird at first as well.

Try going into your volume control (Start > All Programs > Accessories > Entertainment > Volume Control):
1. Click Options
2. Properties
3. Change the mixer device from the USB headset to your speakers.

Should work.

Also should note you can change the output settings in most audio software (for example: Windows Media Player, Winamp, etc.) so if you can't hear anything from your speakers when using those programs, try fiddling with those settings as well. I know for Winamp it's Options > Preferences > Plug-ins > Output > double-click the plug-in you use (mine is out_ds.dll) and again change it to your speakers using the drop down menu.

I can't figure out how to fix this. I noticed that, when I'm watching a video, my headset's mic will relay the audio coming into my headset. Disabling Stereo Mix doesn't fix it. The physical controller that's on my headset cable doesn't stop it from happening, as even if I turn the volume knob all the way down and flick the mute switch, it's still picking up the audio. Muting my headset from within the computer stops the mic from hearing it, as does switching to my speakers that are plugged into the front jack. My headset is a 3.5mm jack type plugged into the back of the computer, directly into the motherboard.

With my old headset i used to have a blast recording sounds/music coming out of my comptuer directly using wave out. Often for MSN voice clips and such.

I haven't changed anything, but now that i have this new headset, the only recording i seem to be able to do is voice recording in sound recorder, i can't seem to record wave out mix on sound recorder, and can't record anything whatsoever in msn voice clips.

I can hear voice clips sent to me though, strange thing is, when someone invited me to an audio conversation earlier, i got the annoying ringing noise alright , but i couldn't hear anything.

I checked my volume controls nothing is muted.

I have a almost broken headset, but the microphone still works fine, The microphone is connected on the wire right before the headset, Its not actually touching the headset itself.

Would this microphone still work if the headset was cut off?

Sorry but I can't manage to take a photo but

Answer:Will a Headset microphone still work if I cut it off the Headset?

Is the microphone actually supported by the headset, by that I mean when the set is on your head is the microphone carried close to your mouth so you have both hands free. If this is the case then cutting off the headset will mean the microphone will not have any way of being held near your mouth.
If you cut it off you will have to be very careful you don't cut the wires for the microphone & it's possible that there is a common return wire for the earpieces & the microphone in the form of a shielded cable, so it would be very difficult, but if you have skills in this area it could be done.

I've searched around a lot about this topic, but after hours and days of searching, I've found nothing to fix my problem. I have a headset that has speakers and a microphone (3.5mm jacks) that work fine, except when I'm trying to talk to someone using the microphone, they can hear the sounds coming from my headset (youtube videos, game sounds etc). I've tried installing the Realtek HD Audio Codec but it disappears after it finishes installing and after I restart (although it still remains in the Programs and Features uninstall page), the program files for it is empty with the exception of RtlUpd64.exe which doesn't do anything when executed and a few other files.
In device manager, the things I have under sound, video and game controllers are Audio Device on High Definition Audio Bus and the Intel Display Audio. I've updated everything to the latest. Also, I recently system restored my computer and before I did I had IDT High Definition Audio Drivers, but after updating they were changed.
I think the problem is that stereo mix is enabled somewhere or something to do with my drivers as when I tried plugging my headset into my brother's computer, it worked fine (he has the Gigabyte Realtek Audio Manager thing and was able to adjust the stereo mix settings).
If there's a program or workaround to this, or how to disable the stereo mix like through registry or something, please let me know.

Answer:Headset mic recording sounds through headset?

You are correct, that is the usual cause of this problem. And aside from being set in the drivers, it can sometimes be set in the application (used for the communication).

That model does appear to use the IDT High-Definition (HD) Audio chipset. The problem is likely in the fact that you upgraded to Win10 and I don't see that HP supports nor supplies drivers for Win10 (I only see drivers for 7 and 8). Which means you are using generic drives supplied by Windows. The generic Windows drivers often work well enough to get hardware functional, but quite often don't support all hardware or all features of all hardware.

I am having trouble with my windows installation after attempting to install windows 10 a second time on the same machine, but different partition.

Question: Solved: Jacks

I don't know what happened. I opened up my laptop yesterday, dusted a bit, and fixed my cracked shell [plastic body]. Now when I plug in my recording device plug into the jack, it records immediately and the sound comes out of the speakers. No difference it the headphone jack.

What happened? How can I fix it? And, I'm fine with going back in it to fix it.

Question: audio jacks

IN W7 how do I make it so that both the rear and front audio jacks work? Currently, my front jacks are registered devices in my sounds but when I put a headphone jack in nothing happens

Answer:audio jacks

Hi XeRo,

Open the Realtek HD Audio Manager and left click the folder icon (shown within the red box). In the dialogue panel that appears, Connector Settings, ensure that both options are selected and then click OK.

Right click the appropriate socket and select Connector Retasking... (alternatively, double left click). This brings up the following panel. This is from my front green socket. Select the required option and click OK.

You can now close the Realtek HD Audio Manager by clicking OK.

Ho and welcome

Can you confirm you have the correct driver by typing device mananger in search. Go to the sound tab and see if the driver is listed and if it has a yellow triangle on it. Also let us know if there are and "unknown" devices with yellow triangles

Dumb  question. There are two jacks on the front of my PC.One for a Mic and one for a headphone. Do they function just like the ones on the back of this PC in which my speakers are plugged ? I have some software that will"capture" sounds that come through my speakers, but don't want to get back there with all the cables, etc.  I tried plugging a mic into the front jack but it didn't work. Thanks.

Question: audio jacks

So I just got a new dell studio xps 9000 and it has no audio jacks at all. I have a logitech thx system but there is no where I can hook it up. I was wondering do the new computers have their sound output from the usb drive? So would this mean I need to find a converter from the three jacks to one usb?

thanks for any help you can give me

Answer:audio jacks

There are some speakers that can connect to your computer and power up via a usb. In term, these speakers also include an integrated headphone (audio jack) jack on the side of the speaker itself.
This is strange though....What kind of computer doesn't have audio jacks

Also, I have an xps 8000. I found that the head phone jacks are actually in a hidden compartment. Is your desktop black? There should be a sliding plastic black (or whatever color) door that you can lift up and find hidden several usb ports and audio jacks.

Question: Computer Jacks

After using my webcam as a microphone on my computer even when I wasn't video chatting for a while I decided to buy a headset. I bought it and came to find that the microphone didn't register with my computer. So I take it back, they replace it. I plug in the second one and it still isn't working. I tried both the jacks in the front of the computer and in the back, but neither work. The headphone jack though, does work so I believe the hardware is fine.

Things I tried:

Checking the sound settings on my computer to see if it was being recognized as plugged in (it wasn't).
Making sure it was plugged in all the way (it was).
Making sure the computer is nice and clean inside so that dust couldn't be to blame.
Any idea's on what could be going wrong?

I'm trying to get this to work with Ventrillo, here's the first error I got.

Unable to activate DirectSound for selected device.
DirectSoundCaptureCreate failed. HR=DSERR_NODRIVER. No sound driver is available for use
When I tried disabling direct sound like some forum's suggested, I got this one.

Failed to open sound input device. rc=-1, Open input wave device failed.

Answer:Computer Jacks

Is the mic listed in the audio setup? Most likely you have multiple mic inputs listed and as the internal mic is already configured, it is being left as the default.

I have an M9350f elite series from HP. There are audio IN jacks in the back of the tower and two in the front.

I'm trying to hook my PS3 component cables up to my tower and play the sound through my speakers, but whatever I try does not work.. the PS3 is outputting sound via component cables..

I'm seriously getting really pissed right now.. I've tried getting this to work with HDMI-to-DVI and nothing is working........

It's extremely hard to write a detailed and flamboyant post when angered, I'm sorry.. but could someone offer me any insight to get this to work?

Answer:Need help with AUDIO IN jacks..

The computer most likely has 1/8" inch stereo input and the PS3 has dual mono RCA type outputs.

You'll need a converter cable to take the two RCA male plugs to make it into a 1'8" stereo male plug. Radio Shack has this.

Hey there, I've recently found out about this problem after building a new PC - whenever an audio device is plugged in, the sound only comes out from one side (For headsets, one ear, etc.). I have researched this for quite a while but first, my jack is as clean as new and there's nothing stuck in it. Secondly, I have triple checked the inside of the PC to see that everthing's been plugged in properly and there are no bent pins either. Does anyone have a solution to this? Please reply ASAP.

P.S. This is NOT a problem with the playback device. All of it work perfectly on other electronics.

P.P.S. All my settings have been configured properly. (I know this for sure as if I press hard on the lines of the playback device I can hear cut-off sounds in the other ear.)

For starters what sound card do you have ?
Onboard or pci sound card ?
Also have you checked your sound mixer settings ?
Double click the speaker icon in the system tray menu.
Click on speaker box icon, navigate to levels:
Look at your main volume level and click balanced.
Do they seem out of order or not lined up for any sound to play in your headset or speakers ?
Left and right should both be equal for surround , stereo or general mono sounds from .wav .mp3 and etc.

If you don't mind, I like to see a screen of your sound settings so I can see what I'm dealing with.

I have an HP P6620f desktop. I have a pair of speakers that I have tested on other computers and had working on this system until recently it stopped. When I plug the speakers into the back port and turn the volume up max on the speakers itself and the in OS sound options I can faintly hear the audio. I have tried uninstalling and reinstalling the latest drivers. I have even tried reinstalling windows and it still happening. The front headphone jack will do the same with my head phones as well. Since its still happening after a reinstall im guessing its a hardware issue but I dont understand why my front headphone jack would do the same as well. I did recently remove my power supply and then put it back in.
Any other thoughts as to what I could try?

Answer:Cannot get audio on any jacks.

The front headphone sound comes from the same chip on the motherboard that supplies the sound to the rear speaker output.

When you reinstalled, did you properly reinstall everything? OS, motherboard chipset drivers, device drivers including the HP supplied sound driver? Windows 7 will install a lot of drivers, some are the correct drivers and some are not, thus you need to install the PC vendor's drivers for some devices, especially the sound.

As you were inside the PC, accidental damage to the motherboard is a possibility due to the motherboard having static sensitive devices on it. Check the internal cabling and especially the cable that connects the front panel audio jacks to the motherboard, to make sure its properly seated. To see if the front panel connection is causing the low output to the speaker connection, temporarily disconnect the front panel audio connection (check or remove the front panel connection with the PC powered off. If you don't have a grounding wrist strap, at least ground yourself to a metal part of the chassis before touching anything inside).

please could anyone surgest a fix for problem with sound output jacks on the front of these devices.this has occured with a new pc build, using Asus 64 bit M/B K8 DELUXE with AMD 3000 MHz cpu.I have fitted sound cables from back of devices and run them to the respective inputs on M/B ie CD and AUX I tried selecting digital output from devices in the device manager properties, but this also does not fix the problem. Also l have had the volume turned up also,Please feel free to make your surgestions.

Answer:cd/rw +dvd/rw sound jacks

Slightly confused, the output jacks on the front of your CD DVD players etc will respond if your pop in a set of headphones, load up a cd with a song on it and, you should then hear ot playing provided that the volume slider on the front is turned up.This will work whether you have connection at the back or not.Try this first. The output at the back is pretty well the same as the front but, you have a plugging facility to go into your MB.Having tried this earphone thing, and if it works then come back.

Try...uninstalling the current audio drivers via Device Manager...then reinstalling the drivers originally developed for the system, if it's an OEM system (HP, Dell, etc.).
Drivers should be available at the manufacturer's website.

Hi there, just a quick question from a total computer noob.

I recently ordered a headset online so I could use a mic for PC gaming. When it came in the mail I discovered that it has two cords... one for audio input and one for output. My computer, unfortunately, only has one audio jack. I'm running 10.6.4 (mac).

Is there any way I can configure my settings so that I can use my headset with only one cord plugged in? The headset was rather expensive and I know I can't return the item. ):

Thanks in advance.

Question: Audio Jacks

Hi Everyone

I have a tech related question (less problem) but please don't just say google it as I have and haven't found much help, whether I'm looking for the wrong thing or something I don't know.

I have a MSI 970 Gaming motherboard and it has 3 audio jacks on the back- Left, Right, Centre- but no matter how much I Google I cant find any pc speakers that use this set up.

The closest I've found is get a 5.1 set up and simply not plug in the spare two speakers- is this my only option for getting the most out of my gaming motherboard?

If you could link me to any relevant info or have any recommendations regarding which sound system to go for I'd appreciate it

Answer:Audio Jacks

the instruction manual says
Audio Ports
These connectors are used for audio devices.

?? Line in: Used for connecting external audio outputting devices.

?? Line out: Used as a connector for speakers or headphone.

?? Mic: Used as a connector for a microphone.

?? RS-Out: Rear surround sound line out in 4/ 5.1/ 7.1 channel mode.

?? CS-Out: Center/ subwoofer line out in 5.1/ 7.1 channel mode.

?? SS-Out: Side surround sound line out in 7.1 channel mode.

if you download the manual and go to page 77 ( on the English manual) , it shows you clearly how to connect up all different types of speaker set up from 2.1 to 8.1

So I have a media server downstairs in my living room, but its slow. So I want to know is it possible to add Ethernet jacks to my downstairs living room wall, and to other places in house with ripping the whole wall apart. FYI I don't have any Ethernet cables going behind my wall, so is there an alternative. I am not very familiar with circuitary stuff, but my dad knows if i point him in the right direction.

Answer:Add Ethernet Jacks in Wall

priyaradha said:

with ripping the whole wall apart.Click to expand...

Assuming you meant "withOUT ripping the whole wall apart" can feed cables through the walls with making only small neat holes.

Or if you don't want to drill even small holes in the walls...get some surface mount stuff..hide the cables nice 'n neat behind surface mount channel runs that hide the cable.

Or...even easier..just get some powerline AC adapters. Plug into AC outlets and use your existing electrical system.

Hey there, just bought a Logitech Z-506 speaker set and I'm having a bit of trouble. The audio jacks on my computer (both front and back panel) don't seem to be detected by the system, meaning that my new speakers (as well as my headphones/microphone) don't work. I do get sound out through HDMI though, but I'd rather not leave the TV on whenever I want sound on my computer.

This thread recommends that I click the yellow folder in Realtek HD Audio Manager and enable the back panel from there, but there wasn't the option there:

Also, now that I've updated the drivers I can't find Realtek HD Audio Manager and the sound still doesn't work.

Looking through the playback devices, the only ones working are called 32LG3000 (My TV, which is working as a sound system for now) and two devices called Digital Audio (S/PDIF), which don't make sound when I plug them in. Any ideas what's gone wrong?

Answer:Video card jacks

The other is a DVI connection. If your monitor does not have a DVI input, then you would need a DVI to VGA adapter. That being said, analog (VGA) seems to be preferable to digital (DVI).

I have a mic and an earphone jack on the front of my case. There is also two usb ports. The usb ports work but the jacks doesn't. I don't use the onboard soundcard (AC 97). I use a Sound Blaster Live Value. How can I get my front jacks to work. I hate to go to the back of my case every time I want plug in my headset.

I am using Windows XP Pro SP3.

Answer:Sound jacks in front

If you don't use the onboard sound card then you will have to run extentions from the back of your sound car in the back to the front of the case. Those audio jacks in the front are connected to your MB allowing your onboard sound to come through the front speakers.

Finished setting up 2nd PC with Win 10 clean install thanks to Brink's excellent tutorial....Thanks Brink...!!
Now this is new to me...When I shut down the box and Windows closes and the monitors box turns off...I noticed my USB connected fan on top (outside) the case is still running ?

Are the USB slots in the case supposed to be 'hot' all the time ? Seems if I power off and turn off the case at the back switch...there should be nothing left active in the box

Could this USB fan be running off the case battery ? Seems doubtful

Any thoughts on my ghost power supply and why the USB exterior case top fan still runs will be greatly appreciated...

Bought a new xps15 a few months ago and have been very happy with it to date - however! I travel a fair bit and recently invested in a pretty expensive set of headphones to partner my new laptop in-flight. Much to my dismay the headphone jacks dont seem to work - i have tried a few different headphones but no joy.
Can anyone help, i'm hoping theres a simple solution as I really dont want the hassle of sending the laptop for repairs...
Thanks in advance

Answer:XPS 15 - Headphone jacks don't work

I had the same issue, and I resolved as you recommended. However mi headphones are not working yet.
I have already tried others and nothing
What else could I do?

Hello. I apologize for the delay in answering -- I have fallen behind a bit.
Try switching to the Windows native audio driver and see if the headphones work. If it does then the Realtek audio driver is buggy. If it does not work with either the Realtek driver or the native driver then probably hardware failure. In that case contact tech support if you are still under warranty. If not then get an inexpensive usb audio jack.
1. Open the Device Manager (find it in the Control Panel, or type devmgmt.msc into the search box).2. Expand the "Sound, video & game controllers" and right click on "Realtek High Definition Audio".3. Select to "Update Driver Software".4. Click on "Browse my computer for driver software".5. Click "Let me pick from a list of drivers on my computer".6. Put a check in the box "Show compatible hardware" if not already checked.7. In the list of devices, click "High Definition Audio" (the native driver).8. Click "Next".9. On the Update Driver Warning box, click "Yes" (install the driver). 10. Restart the laptop if prompted. If not prompted, then no need to restart.[To get back to the Realtek driver, do it again but reverse the names in steps 2 and 7.]

Question: Front Audio Jacks

I have an Antec Sonata II case with ASUS P5LD2 motherboard.
I have some problem with the front audio jacks, at first there isn't any response when I plug in my mic/headphone, but then I checked an option called "Disable Front Jack Detecting", now there is input/output. But I want the detection to work like the jacks at the back, because I want my speakers to shut off when I plug in my headphone.
Is there anything I can do?

Answer:Front Audio Jacks

Even though it appears you're having the same problem, please start a new thread. It's very difficult to keep two problems straight and who's working on what in a single thread. Thanks for your cooperation.

Assuming that you have a standard case, you probably have not properly connected the front case jacks to the audio block on the MB. There are usually several jumpers on the audio block that are removed when you have front speakers/mike to allow the front jacks to disable the rear jacks. These must be removed and replaced with the front panel wiring.

I am currently wiring my new house with Ethernet jacks (8+ jacks). I am using Comcast service.
First thing i did was

Modem->switch-> ethernet jack/netgear router

i noticed only one device will work. i did some research and found out the switch has to go through a router first to give out multiple IPs?(don't know how to say it )
i had an extra Linksys WRT54GL router laying around and i did:

Modem-> linksys router->Switch-> netgear router/ethernet jacks

and it works perfectly throughout the house, my main concern is, the modem is going through the Linksys router (had some problems before with this router) to all the ethernet jacks around the house. the linksys router is located in the basement (has poor signal) so i hooked up a netgear router on one of the Ethernet jacks. it works perfectly, but is it fine to run a setup like this, (going through 2 routers)? can i replace my linksys router with something else to give out multiple ips?

Modem-> suggestions?->switch->Ethernet jack

Answer:Need help on wiring my ethernet jacks.

My experience is limited but it sounds like you just need a device to perform the DHCP role and issue ip addresses. That is one of the roles that can be done by a router.
You could probably replace your old router with a new router setup to act as a DHCP server with no problems.

I've got a Creative AudioPCI sound card. Windows identifies it as "Creative AudioPCI (ES1371, ES1373) (WDM)".

What do the colors on jacks mean? I've figured out that the green jack is a low impedance output for speakers, it's probalby 8 ohm.

What are the black, red and blue jacks?

I think one is line in, one is line out. Are line in and line out 600 ohm? And what color are those jacks?

What's the function and impedance of that third jack?

Answer:Creative AudioPCI jacks

The third jack is Microphone in. Whatever colour code (mike is usually pink) I think Creative always go - top to bottom - Line in - Mike in - Line out and Speaker out.

Sorry on impedence - beyond my knowledge.

My iPod just "busted" today. There seems to be a problem with the headphone jack. I opened it up and all to try and fix it. It worked for a while, thne it stopped again. Oh yes, the warrenty is over. I'm actually one of the people who has had the same iPod for the longest, of the people I know. =3

Well I was just wondering, because other than this my iPod is pretty much in 100% (maybe 90ish%). So if I actually decide to retire this thing I'll use it as an external HD.

BUT, I was wondering if you guys consider it worth to order a new headphone jack from one of these sites online (I already broke open my iPod so I'd probably be able to figure out how to change it myself)

I could also consider getting a new iPod... Christmas is coming so it wouldn't be too bad of an idea. And I'd get a free External HD!

But my question is, have they improved this? I heard the Shuffle doesn't have this problem with the headphone jack (but I think the shuffle is too small for me), what about the others? Classic still suffering from the same issue? How about the Touch?

Alright, so Yesterday my foot accidentally knocked the power strip out of the wall and my computer powered down. Prior to that I had just been watching Netflix with my Turtle Beach x12 headphones. When I restarted the computer they no longer worked.

I have tested the headphones and they work with other computers/xbox and no problems, they work just fine. So I got another pair of headphones and used them with my computer. Still no sound.

I consider my self quite tech-savvy. I've exhausted everything I can find on this problem and sifted through at least 50 sites. I've made sure nothing is muted. I've re-plugged the headphones in and out multiple times. Neither headphone jack (front or back) is working. I've uninstalled and re-installed ALL sound drivers. No luck.

I have a Hp Pavilion HPE Series computer (h8-1239) and it uses "Beats Audio." I find this program to be really basic (no options at all really).

I'm wondering what there is for me to do? Could a unplugging cause both headphone jacks to stop working? Is there a program I can install that helps fix sound issues? I've used windows troubleshooting and it hasn't helped at all. It says my headphones are working correctly but none of them produce any sound. Any help is greatly appreciated.

Anyone have any experience with them? Will they work with an internet connection?

Hello, my headset just broke which was USB...I have a laptop which I sort of dock on my desk with a dozen things plugged into it, and normally I have my computer speakers plugged into the headphone jack, which I use those for music, and then my USB headset for gaming/voip at the same time.

Anyway I went out looking at headsets and I found an awesome one but it was just copper rather than USB...however my laptop does have 2 headphone and 1 microphone jacks on it, so I'm wondering if its possible to have each of the headphone jacks as its own device so I can have different things playing to each one.

I'm googling and messing around with 2 different headphones plugged into my laptop right now, but they are both just playing the same thing And I only have 1 Audio device (which tends to be whatever is plugged in...Forexample if nothing is plugged in, it will come out the Laptop's Speakers, and If I plug something into the headphone jack, it will come out that and the speakers will mute. I'm using the Windows 7 default audio driver, because the manufacturer of my laptop (HP/IDT) was having major issues with Windows 7...However its been quite a while since I looked into that.

Answer:2 headphone jacks as different devices?

Update, just installed the latest Realtek driver, In Devices I can see both Speakers and Headphones, however the headphones are set as communication device, If I try to make them default device nothing happens.

Right now in playback devices it shows this:

Another example of how I want it to work is there's a racing game I play called iRacing, in Audio options you can select the device for game sound, voip sound and 3rd for spotter sound (computer voice that tells you when a car is on your left or right, things like that).

Right now on my laptop I have computer speakers plugged into 1 port, and a set of headphones plugged into the second. By default the game was on "Speakers and Dual Headphones", and it was coming out of the computer speakers and the headphones I had plugged in. When I selected VOIP to be "Independed Dual Headphones", the game sound switched to my laptop speakers, and the VOIP was now coming out of the plugged in Computer Speakers and Headphones.

I put it off for a couple months (oops) and my roomie has been gettin on me to try to find a solution. Anyone else with the same problem or with any helpful advice? you'd make me and esp. my roomie very happy.

Thanks in advance,

I'm attempting to connect a new Logitech Z-623 2.1 speaker system to my XPS8700 windows 7 tower. The sound system has one male jack and the 8700 has six colored female jacks. Which colored jack do i use to get maximum operating sound from the logitech Z-623 sound system?
Are there any other adjustments in the XPS software required to get maximum sound from the logitech system?
My email address is: [email protected]

Answer:XPS 8700 Audio Jacks

If I remember correctly, the audio jack you want to use is light green and should match the color of your male jack.  If they are not color coded, it should be the middle upper female plug that has a symbol with an arrow pointing away from the symbol.  All the other jacks are for 5.1 and 7.1 sound system.

Question: front panel jacks

When connecting the front panel (mic, headset) of a case to the mobo, is it possible to plug it in backwards and still have it work. I ask only because in my VIA HD screen it lists the back panel and front panel. In it the green jack is highlighted where my speakers are connected to. In the front panel I have my head phones w/mic plug in and in the VIA HD panel it's not showing up. So when I use my headphones it does not mute my speakers.....sound comes from both speakers and headset. If I plug headset in to jack on speakers it mutes speakers and sound comes only through headset but I can't use my mic. So I have to use front panel w/headset and turn off there a way to work around this or a fix.

Answer:front panel jacks

is it possible to plug it in backwards

Probably not, but seeing as the case is from Ultra who knows. Anyway check you bios settings under "Onboard Devices Configuration" and make sure the "Front panel Select" setting is set to AC'97. Reason being is that your case doesn't have/support HD Audio through the front panel, only an AC'97 connection. Couldn't find anything on Ultra's site support/manual-wise (they are willing to sell it to you though, at nearly twice the price as from Tiger Direct; go figure, one owns the other), but I did find this review on it,

Ultra Products E-Torque Midtower Case | Maximum PC

that at least says which it has. Probably find once you make that one change in the bios (HD Audio is the default), it should work as expected.

I am running 32x Windows 7, and recently bought a headset with a microphone. If I plug my headset into the microphone jack, the microphone works but I can't hear anything. Visa Versa with the headphone jack, I can hear but the microphone doesn't even connect.

Answer:Headphone + Microphone Jacks

Control Panel - Sound - Recording tab - Click Configure button - Set up microphone - Microphone Setup Wizard.

You will see three choices 1. Headset Microphone 2. Desktop Microphone 3. Other.

select Desktop Microphone instead of Headset Microphone or vice versa and see if this helps

soo i have a 5.1 system for my computer

it has 3 jacks

i know green is for the headphones

but what is black and orange for?

a little program i have, has both of them set for "front speaker out"

so i guess my question is, is this correct? or should one of them be set for "rear speaker out" or something along those lines?

Answer:Solved: sound jacks?

Orange should be: Sub+Center (or just center), black should be Rear out. Green is actually not for headphones, but front channel (which includes also headphones, as well as the front pair of speakers in a 5.1 setup and any stereo speakers)

I have a new Dell XPS 8700 , it has 6 audio jacks with teeny tiny symbols, which colored jack do I plug my stereo speakers into? For now I have them plugged into the headphone jack on top of the computer. The volume here is very low. I tried plugging into the 6 jacks with no luck. The speakers are from an older Dell.

Answer:XPS 8700, audio jacks

green=stereo output front channels                 black=stereo output rear              grey=stereo output side
gold=dual output, center, subwoofer                blue=stereo output line level        pink=mono microphone output
At least that's what my xps 8700 book says.  Check the speaker icon in the taskbar for sound levels, they may be set real low. Also check accessories, sound, recorder, click on O.K., click on speakers. Hope this helps.

OS: Win7

Audio Driver: Realtek HD Audio

With Realtek HD Audio Manager, I could retask (output/input) the rear audio analog ports.
It auto-detects devices being plugged into them. It mutes the port whenever the cord moves a little bit.

What i want to do is to disable auto-detect, force task options, and disable muting when a port is un-plugged. Is this possible?

My computer has a panel on the front with 4 usb slots, a mic input, and a headset output. Can anyone tell me how to get these mic/headset thingys to work? It's funny, I cant remember EVER using a computer that had front audio jacks that worked. lol. I know there must be a way.

Answer:Front Audio Jacks

first, your motherboard/sound card must support it.
what is your motherboard and sound card?
if you got a manual with them, they should tell you if they support it and where the pins go

Ont he back of my computer, I have 6 Audio Jacks. Two of them are In's, so we won't be discussing them (much). The other 4 are as follows, Line Out, Rear Speakers, Side Speakers, Center/Sub. The only one that works is Line Out, I never checked the other ones because I didn't think I would ever need them.

I just got a new Subwoofer today, it's for a Home Theater, but I was able to rig up a compatible cable. I know the cable isn't the problem because I tried it with my MP3 player, and it worked great. But when I plug it into the Center/Sub channel, nothing. Just to make sure, I played a song, and tried plugging my main speakers into the other 3 jacks, with no sound.

Computer Specs:

Custom Built by me.

Intel Pentium D Dual Core 3.0 GHz
256 MB single SLi Graphics Card (Gigabyte)
Gigabyte GA-8N-SLI motherboard
Windows Vista Ultimate Edition

Drivers all updated fully (Windows Vista edition drivers if available)

The sound is Realtek AC850 with AC'97 codec.

Now, if I plug the subwoofer into the Line Out, that works too, it's just these other jacks that don't work. I've tried to get them to enable in the software that came with my motherboard, but there is no option for that, I guess it's just supposed to... work, and that's exactly what it's not doing.

Now I said we wouldn't be talking about the "IN" jacks much, so here's that little bit. Int he software, those two I can change to be In's or Out... Read more

As you do it, you will notice the port functions for the sound card change. For 3 output ports, you need to set it to at least 6 channel.I don't have my vista system in front of me now (xp) but the directions should be close.
