I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

WARNING

As I've test the incompatibilities, patches, and scripts on my virtual machine, I have made tweaks to this configuration both concerning system and settings. The tweaks I've made to this system are critical and will cause system instability if not configure automatically. In addition to that, I've made custom scripts made with AutoHotkey to optimize the compatibility of some of my security software. These scripts are unique to each software and are converted to an executable. If you wish to copy my configuration, PM me or do extensive research as the scripts and settings that I made for my configuration are critical to compatibility and optimization.

My goal is to achieve a high level of security without compromising usability and comfort.

My friend isn't too tech savvy but needs a free security config. I was thinking using:
- sophos home,
-comodo firewall,
-zemana,
-and adding ublock to his browser and have smartscreen to system wide.

Would this be enough for some decent free protection?

Answer:Windows 10 - Making a FREE security config?

Cool ... The permutations for a good "free"security config are almost endless IMO..
I see less reason for a config "not" to be free.

Personally,I would recommend..(as you say that your friend is not too tech-savvy)...
1) Free Isolation - Sandboxie
2) Free Anti-Exe - Voodoo Shield
3) Free AV - Avast, AVG, Avira (and/or Crystal Security)
...Plus (as you said) uBlock Origin

When you create a thread in the Security Configuration forum, you will need to fill-in some fields with your current security setup. However at some point you may need to install or uninstall a program. When this happens you can update your thread security setup by doing the following:

1. Within the thread you've originally created, click on the "Thread Tools", then select "Edit Thread Fields".

2. An overlay window should now pop-up. These window will contain the information that you've originally posted. Edit the fields that you would like to update, and then click on the "Save Changes" button.

That's it. Stay safe!

I wanted to post something for New or Novice members that can help them better understand PC security.
We have some top notch members who really know their stuff, but some of that, if a user has not been exposed to it can seem a bit overwhelming and confusing. So here is a video from Nova on security basics.
I found this one hosted on a Mozilla Site and wanted to share this with the Novice members who may benefit from it. Enjoy.
I will add more here as I find them. Thanks

Hello Boni:
I was following the instructions on the forum from the member named "Broni"; posted June 26, 2013 for  the Toshia HDD/SSD alert information error message. Upon downloading the tool "Security Check" tool, something very strange happened; I dowloaded the Security check, but, when I clicked the "SAVE" button, the tool just started all by it's self in the command prompt; it also opened notepad with some kind of results; all--- by it's self. I Was unable to save the tool to the desktop, or, make sure the the boxes that were indicated to be check, were "indeed" checked off because, "I never saw the tool".
I opened a new window in notepad over the results that opened, and started to write the forum about the command prompt issue; I was about to copy and paste the results to the new page that I was writing for the forum, but, the document had disapeared. I went to the documents library, to see if the "results" document was there and simply "untitled"; so, I saved the new page, clicked on "Save as", and labled it as "Boni"; I went back to the documents page to see if the "Boni" page was saved; It was alo missing. I then came back to the forum, and downloaded the tool again, this time, it showed up as a download in the download area with no choice to "Save as" for the desktop; also, there is no download (1) in the download area, only the second one I just downloaded. I forgot to save it to the "Desktop".
Can you tell me what I missed? what happened in the first downloa... Read more

Greetings,

We have a security group for each region in the world (North America, Europe, Asia, South America, Africa, etc).

In addition, we have security groups for departments of regions (NA_dpt_Accounting, NA_dpt_Engineering, etc). These groups are a member of their respective region ("North America").

We have a distribution list for each region in the form of dl-<region>, such as dl-northamerica, dl-europe, etc.

We also have one distribution list dl-company (or dl-world or dl-global or dl-all). All the dl-<region> distribution lists are a member of this. It works.

Problem is this: when a user needs to be able to send an e-mail company-wide, we can't simply just give privileges to dl-company ... we have to give privileges to every single dl-<region> and dl-company. We have tried adding plain security groups such as NA_dpt_InformationTechnology or 'North America' but mail is not delivered to these security groups -- we seem to have to use the security groups Exchange creates for distribution lists.

I did observe that the security groups Exchange creates are Universal+Distribution for Group scope and Group type respectively. The security groups we have for regions and departments use the default Global+Security. Some of our folder permissions, shares, GPOs and OU structure depend on these security groups.

Is there any way we can use our region and department security groups as members of distribution lists with s... Read more

Answer:Exchange & AD Security Groups: making security groups members of distribution lists?

Can you do a Dynamic OU-based Distro List? And/or is there any correlation between OU's and Security Groups? I'd approach it from that angle. See if this makes sense.

1) Create a Dynamic Distro List based on a Region/Dept/ETC OU. <-- Hide this from the GAL. This would be your dynamically updated "Security Group"

2) Open up Properties of the DL's in question and go into the Mail Flow Settings / Message Delivery Restrictions / Accept Messages From section, you should see the new list available.

That would restrict dynamically based upon OU, would that Fly?

My father, sis, and I have the same brand laptop. They are pretty close to being the same models. I was the last to purchase mine, and I have the least experience among us, although I have come a long way, this past year. I thought that by having the same brand/ model, we could help each other..so far my sis's hard drive failed. My dad told me that he had purchased an external hard drive, because he supposedly needs it..he told me that he had to mail in his laptop to have the screen replaced. He then asked me if it would be alright to check his email on my computer. I agreed, and I volunteered to bring my laptop to his house..after all, he is my dad, right? I asked him to use my wireless connection, and he insisted on hooking up to his connection, etc. I began to think that maybe he was attempting to spy on me..Would it have been possible for him to install, or transfer anything from mine to his? I have nothing to hide, but would hate to have dad invading my privacy..I had installed good anti-virus security and spyware programs prior to this, and since..How can I check to see if this has happened? Thanks for the help.

Answer:Security issues, and nosey family members.

Of course he could copy anything he wants to your PC since you let him use it. It does not matter whether it was a wireless or hard wired connection, if you allowed him to login to your account or any other account with administrator priviledges then he could do whatever he wants.

Antivirus and antispyware programs are not always going to locate things that were installed on purpose. Some time they will detect certain forms of keyloggers but newer commercial forms of keyloggers are design to be undetected.

What makes you think you father would be spying on you? And if he does not have the PC in his possession, he would have to have remote administration type software installed inorder to get access to your PC.

Is you PC actually having any problems?

Hi folks

Anybody who is an Insider member and has downloaded the CU update could you tell me whether Ms has finally fixed the ongoing Long File name problem (directory/folder path lengths where file names must be less than approx. 200 - 260 chars.

I am having a load of issues on Windows clients being unable to display music files from my NAS server due to this restriction.

Note -- Third party apps don't work properly either

Here's Version 9 of Total Commander -- same problem.

Cheers
jimbo

Answer:Insider Members - CU update has it fixed long file names

Do you mean this?

Tip Starting in Windows 10, version 1607, MAX_PATH limitations have been removed from common Win32 file and directory functions. However, you must opt-in to the new behavior.

A registry key allows you to enable or disable the new long path behavior. To enable long path behavior set the registry key at HKLM\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\FileSystem LongPathsEnabled (Type: REG_DWORD).

I am multibooting Ubuntu 16.04, Windows 10 Insider and Windows 7
My main OS for work is Windows 7, Ubuntu is for university, and Windows 10 is for fun (testing and gaming).
I am using Firefox with ReHIPS for work.
Chrome (portable) with Sandboxie with container folder in ramdisk is for web browsing.
Extensions are tweaked to work together.

Updates are automatic, but they are delayed for 1-3 days to avoid problems.
I am using mainly portable apps and I have USB "toolbox" which contains additional program/tools like scanners, archivers, editors, browsers, ...

Tools in USB "toolbox" won't be in config, only programs I have in PC are there.

Tweaks:
Avast ? Hardened mode
DNS only via DNSCrypt or VPN
WFC ? secure boot
Chrome can connect only via VPN (firewall rule)
IPv6 disabled

Answer:Config free and Satellite Pro L20

Hello

I hope that you use the right version. For your unit you must use version ?ConfigFree V5.50.13?. I have installed this utility many times and I have never seen this message.

Obviously you install your unit manually. Please be careful with installations order. On download page you can find ?Installations instructions?. Check please this list and be sure that you have preinstalled the unit with this order.

Consider using Malwarebytes Anti-Malware Premium as an on demand scanner only BTS is enough for real time protection.
You could also add an additional on demand scanner such as ESET Online Scanner
CCleaner or Privazer if not already installed
Some type of backup solution
If only for testing and you have another machine then you probably don't need all the above

Hi!

I've got this problem:
I'm using windows xp and config free. the "use windows"-checkbox in the wlan settings from xp is unchecked. But configfree shows this message "Another application is controling the wlan". I want to use config free, but i'm not be able to do it. What can be wrong?!

Thx,
Thunder

(Sorry for the bad english!)

Answer:Config Free and Windows XP

Hello Thunderman

Wrong is that you have mistake ConfigFree for WLAN client utility. ConfigFree is tool for WLAN and LAN monitoring and not for connection configuring. If you want to configure WLAN you must use Windows settings or some WLAN client utility.

I don?t know which unit you have but I recommend you to configure the WLAN using Windows settings.

By the way your English is very good. ;)

Hi

I have downloaded this driver update document and found the information that the Config Free update is only for ?Satellite Pro M30? and NOT for Satellite M30X!
Please check exactly this document.
Furthermore you can find this tool in the section ?Satellite Pro M series? ? ?Satellite Pro M30?.

I am an IT Administrator setting up an employee's personal laptop to use on our business network. I can choose between setting up a separate user account so that the employee would log off and back on in order to get onto the business network, or I can choose to use ConfigFree- which comes on her computer.

She will need to be able to access files and printers on the company server.

Will ConfigFree allow my employee to hop onto the company wireless network and "login" to have access to company files and printers? Is there a good resource to describe how to set this up?

Thanks, Amanda

Answer:Can I use Config Free for comapny wireless network?

Hello Amanda

In my opinion you must learn more about ConfigFree and what can be done with this tool.
I think that there is no sense to write about it here and you can read all this in help file.
Just start ConfigFree and click on help.

Read a little bit about ConfigFree and all options there especially ?Useful features of ConfigFree?.

If you have more questions let us know.

I just bought a Toshiba notebook with XP home edition installed. I am using it as a wireless notebook with a LinKsys router. Everything works fine except for the Config Free program which came installed on the Toshiba. I have wireless access to the internet without any problem. I have called Toshiba support three times so far but they can't seem to be of any help.
When I turn on the Config Free program, I get an error message that my wireless communication switch is not turned on even though it is turned on. The program starts fine, the blue radar screen loads but I cannot see any networks on it and it tells me that the wireless lan is (disable)...sic.
The program worked perfectly for two days at the beginning but has not worked since. I keep getting an error message.
If anyone has any suggestions to why it tells me that my switch is off and ways to fix it, I would really appreciate it.

Hi

It seems the OS tries to load the ?Config-free? file which does not exists or the path to this file is wrong.
Both are possible!

How did you try to reinstall the ConfigFree!? In my opinion you should firstly try to remove the ?old? Configfree from the system and then after new reboot you should try to reinstall the new downloaded Utility.

Good luck

By the way; Be sure that you have downloaded the Configfree for the right notebook series

I vet any new software by testing and analyzing it on my sheep-dip virtual machine.

VirtualBox is far more user-friendly and capable for this than Hyper-V; Hyper-V is a royal pain to use for this purpose.

Bitdefender Free is light and effective.
Panda Free has too many problems (stops working, cripples system)
Qihoo has too many false-positives for my taste.
AVG is too heavy and I've encountered enough infected machines with a perfectly functioning AVG to give me pause.
Avast routinely has compatibility problems and why I won't recommend or use it on an operational system.

Indeed, the Connectivity Doctor diagnosis window pops us briefly, just to replaced by the classic error messagge : cfmain.exe has encountered a problem and needs to close....

Details are
AppName: cfmain.exe AppVer: 5.0.0.119 ModName: venapi.dll

I found this:
cfmain.exe - This is a component of Toshiba Network Device. Toshiba Network Device is Toshiba's network device switcher. To initiate, this application requires a Toshiba ACPI Common Module and Wireless HotKey.

Well, because of this description I would recommend to reinstall the common modules and the Wireless hotkey utility

Hi,

The *ConfigFree 5.90.05AB*, available in the Satellite MCE A100-498 download drivers area, is incompatible with the wireless lan manager *Intel PROSet Utility 12.4.0.0.3* (driver *Intel PRO/Wireless 3945/4965/5100/5300 12.4.0.21.1*), also available in the same place.

When both installed, the *Conectivity Doctor* and *Profiles* tool returns the error "+cfmain.exe has encountered a problem and needs to close. We are sorry for the inconvenience+".

Is there any other version of ConfigFree that works with this wireless lan driver/manager version? Will Toshiba release another ConfigFree version?

Best regards,
FilipeSilva

.

Answer:Incompatible Config Free and Wireless LAN driver/manager

On your other link I saw you use WXP and now you write about WXP MCE.
Do you mix all this stuff or what?
Which OS you have installed?

If you use WXP MCE (notebook was delivered with MCE) than please install all available stuff for MCE. As far as I know all offered drivers for MCE are absolutely the same as in Toshiba recovery image so everything should works properly.

Install WXP MCE and install all stuff for MCE following right installations order. Believe me everything will work properly.

Satellite A100 is pretty old notebook model and I cannot imagine that Toshiba offers incompatible drivers.

Hi

Did you use the right config free for the right notebook?
I assume you have installed the OS form the original Microsoft CD and not from the Toshiba recovery CD.
The installation of the Toshiba stuff should be done in the right order.
Chipset utility at the beginning is very important.
Common modules if available should be installed also at the beginning.

I keep a casual security config. I don't keep a bullet proof security setup because it is cumbersome.
Also my device is slow and weak which further discourages anything elaborate.
After reading other configs, I decided to get a strong AV ie Kaspersky, changed my dns to Norton, maxed my Adguard settings and do monthly scans.

Answer:RVS Security Config

If you have a slow device than kaspersky should not be your security program of choice. It runs heavy! Especially if you have a laptop ; it sucks the lifeblood out of your battery. You would be better of with win defender , emsisoft anti malware or eset. Ad kb ssl enforcer to your browser as an extra security meassure. Also think about getting a backup program like aomei backupper standard , better safe than sorry Thanks for sharing your config!

Very good config.

A few notes and additions:
You might want to add a firewall application, since Avast Free Antivirus does not include any network firewall or HIPS (behavior blocker) components. These components are an essential extra layer of security.
For these tasks, I would personally recommend COMODO Firewall (free) which contains three powerful security modules:
1. Network Firewall (allows you to control connections coming in or going out of your computer).
2. HIPS ("Host Intrusion Prevention System" checks any file for suspicious behavior and allows you to create rules for how that file should run and what it can do on your computer).
3. Sandbox (virtual environment for isolating unrecognized or potentially malicious applications, so that they cannot harm your actual system or files).
COMODO Firewall is an extremely powerful application, and with a little bit of configuration it can become a very effective security layer. In case you run into any trouble configuring COMODO Firewall, there are many COMODO users here on MalwareTips who are all eager to help.
If you see that you do not like COMODO Firewall, you may use Sandboxie as a virtual sandbox application for isolating suspicious files and running applications (e.g. browsers) securely in an isolated and protected environment, without having to worry that any malicious files may harm your computer. (note that Sandboxie ... Read more

Just started using security and antimalware software.

I used an unpatched XP with NO Firewall and NO antivirus for several months and I never got infected as far as I know. (The C drive gets flushed after reboot so it's hard to tell)

360 Total Security Essentials is all that is needed. With Avira and Bitdefender engines enabled, RAM usage is high... but only when interface is open or scanning. It will only be a real problem if user always has interface open.

Protection far outweighs the RAM usage. Plus, 360 Essentials is very user friendly.

Few suggestions; enable UAC and consider creating a system image as an OS backup. Verify you trust all those browser add-ons.

thanks for sharing your config!

- Enable UAC at least to default settings
- Download 1 or 2 on demand scanners like (Zemana Anti-Malware, Malwarebytes, Emsisoft Emergency Kit, ...)
- Replace Ad Blocker with Ublock Origin
- Install HTTPS Everywhere (chrome extension)
* Think about getting a password manager

Smartscreen and Firewall disabled, no backup plan mean a risky configuration.
You should resolve these gaps.

On O&O ShutUp I activated all out of:
- App notifications disabled
- SmartScreen-Filter disabled
- Deferring of Upgrades
- Automatic Windows Updates (1 of 2 and 2 of 2)
- Windows Updates for other products

This functions are still at original.

When I download a file which I don't know or trust, I scan it with HitmanPro, Malwarebytes and Kaspersky.
If it is a big file or software I run it on VirtualBox at first for testing what it does.
If it is a small file I upload and analyse it on virustotal.
Generally I run and test unknown/untrusted files or programs on VirtualBox before running on my "real" system.

I run a full system scan sporadically but minimum once at week. Sometimes daily.
For a full system scan regularly I use HitmanPro, Kaspersky, Malwarebytes, AdwCleaner and JRT by Malwarebytes. Sometimes I download Emsisoft Emergency Kit and let it also scan.

As Router I'm using the ASUS RT-AC87U. It has nice features like VPN-Client, AiProtection by Trend Micro (phishing-website detection & block), Exploit-detection and blocking infected systems in Network. According to ASUS it got a new Firewall Hardware with greatest performance at this moment. It all works very fine. I decided for HideMyAss as VPN-Provider. They got nice & fast servers.

sincerely,

You can remove TuneUP if it ain?t a paid version. Modern OS needs little or no tweaking at all to keep peak performance all day. Why would anyone disable toast notification on w10? Consider doing a backup or atleast backup imp. files to prevent losing in an event of disk failure. I guess you're using multiple HDDs and SSDs in RAID? Am i correct?
