Sorting with selection kept in Windows Explorer - Why is selection reset when sort order is changed in Windows Explorer?

Question: Sorting with selection kept in Windows Explorer - Why is selection reset when sort order is changed in Windows Explorer?

You can no longer sort the contents of a file listing in Windows Explorer, keeping a selection of files made in the previous sort order.
If this is a bug I would like to know, than I will report it appropriately, otherwise - if it is "by design" - I would like an explanation, why this function was removed.
As I see it, sorting has to be possible with the selection of files kept intact.
Searching the net I find many people being upset that this is not possible in Windows 7. I used it all the time at work, on my XP machine. I used to select all dll-files in a certain folder, and then sort by "Date modified", which resulted in a
list of files sorted by date, and with the appropriate files selected. This was an easy way to find out which dll files had changed last in our development environment - just sorting by date makes a lot of other files, such as log files and debug files appear
in between the dll files.
Below is another call for this. This user's request was made in another part of MS forum and the (so called) answer was just a link referring to this place, indicating that the user should put his question here instead, so I take the liberty of putting
his text here as well:
One of my most common ways of working when copying, moving or deleting multiple files using Windows Explorer is (using details view) to sort by one method (for example, by time), select some file, then change sort to another method (for example, by type)
and select a few more (perhaps changing sort again and repeating), before finally performing my desired action (e.g. Ctrl-X, Ctrl-C or Shift-Del).

However, in the Windows 7 RC version of Windows Explorer, as soon as another sort is selected, the selection is reset. This seriously raises the complexity of doing the tasks that I commonly do, requiring me to do many multiples of the number of steps
previously required to do exactly the same thing.

I would use this operation a minimum of 10 times every day, so this is a *major* issue for me.
Me again: Until the sorting is working properly with selected files kept, I will have to use third party components, such as the search tool Agent Ransack / File Locator to make a search in the folder I need to do my work in, and use its built-in result
pane for sorting the files.

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Windows Explorer is not giving me a Thumbnail choice under View:

Also, in System Properties, Advanced tab, Performance button under Settings, when I check Show thumbnails instead of icons, then click Apply and OK, if I click the Performance button under Settings again, Show thumbnails instead of icons is unchecked. I can't get the change to take effect.

I suspect I changed something awhile ago but I can't remember what.

Answer:Windows Explorer has no Thumbnail selection under View

Hey Rich,

There wouldn't be a thumbnail preview setting in view. Instead, you would select either Medium Icons, Large Icons, or Extra Large Icons to be able to see thumbnail previews.

Go ahead and make sure that you have thumbnail previews turned on at both locations you mentioned to see if that may help.

Sorry for my English. If you can, please tell me the solution. In Windows Explorer, the selection line (list view) depends on the length of the file or folder. In Windows 10, the selection line does not depend on the length of the file or folder, it is always the same. Can I change something in the Registry Editor to do it as it was at 7?

Is there any way to include Windows Explorer Favorites in a VBA folder selection list?

I have tried the BrowseForFolder function, but can find no way in BrowseForFolder to support the "Windows Explorer" Favorites list. The Favorites accessed by using BrowseForFolder option 6:
BrowseForFolder(0, "Please choose a folder", 0, 6)
is not the same list. I think that is the Internet Explorer Favorites, not the Windows Explorer Favorites.

Thanks to those who looked at my previous post. Since I had no response, I have simplified the question. Thanks for any help you can provide.

I don't know which "Windows Explorer Favorites" you mean.
I don't have any and cannot find any either.
Could you be more specific which folder or filelist you mean?

I am using the "Windows 7 Basic" theme (with some modifications), but I find the selection colors difficult to distinguish in file explorer windows.

Hovering on a file is a light blue, clicking on a file is a slightly darker blue. There have been a number of instances where I accidently dropped a file into a folder because I had selected it by accident.

Is there any way to change the colors of the file selections (without changing the theme)?

Hi guys,

here is my little problem

i am running internet explorer 6 which i will upgrade to 7

i have adobe acrobat reader 8 installed
i also have adobe acrobat 5 (which i use to create and edit PDF files.

I have a custom application, like a catalog that when run opens menus and
selections...these are essentially PDF's in an application.

When i click on a PDF it uses internet explorer to open the PDF...this is hard wired
in the application as there are no settings in it to select browser etc.

It seems by default internet explorer is using the acrobat 5 to open PDF's as i get
an error please update to acrobat 8 or greater to read online PDF's ...well its something
along that line...

So how can i change IE to use 8 to open PDF's? the only way i can get around this is
to uninstall 5...this is a real pain...

any help please

Hi,

After a long time of computer running perfectly I am back for some more excellent help from you guys. I'm having a very unfortunate and weird problem. Explorer.exe craps out (crashes) when I simply select certain files. These are usually .avi files but it doesn't happen w/ any files, just some, and this wasn't happening until now.

This is what I've done so far. Ran Spybot, adware SE, ccleaner, avg antivirus, spywareblaster (all updated). I even did a windows xp sp2 "repair install" (unfortunately I did this before the others, and when I did the others I found a bunch of shit, but even w/ that removed I'm still having the problems)

What should I do guys?

Answer:explorer.exe crashing upon selection of some files

Ok I'm starting to doubt this is spyware or viruses...I have some new information. Explorer.exe will crash immediately if browsing to a folder w/ certain .avi's in it IF it has it's view set to thumbnails. If not, it crashes on selection of certain files. In safe mode, on selection of certain files it doesn't crash, but for thumbnail view it still does. I think explorer.exe is having some difficulty generating the "preview" image you see on the left pane when you select an avi or as the actual image on the file when put as thumbnail view... What could be causing it to crash for some avi's rather than others though!??

When I bring up Windows Explorer it no longer shows the tree view of folders in the left pane. Actually, there's no left pane at all. And the "folders" button on the toolbar is gone.

I've got Vista Ultimate 32bit on a quad-core 4G machine.

This just recently happened so I'm assuming something got clobbered.

Please help!

Thanks in advance,

Hello there,

I have a problem with my Windows 8.1 (it's legal, not pirated) with explorer crashing randomly on selecting files or folders. There is no rule to this behavior. It may crash clicking the same file, for a couple of hours and then stops crashing. Then, crashing comes back on other files (or folders). When it crashes no error message pops up - it just closes (and all other opened explorer instances).

Here's what appears in the event viewer:

I've been trying for months to find a way to use both Check Boxes AND Shift Key for multiple file selection. Searching Google and this forum I haven't found the solution. This thread Shift for selecting multiple Files not working comes close to this but not BOTH. I've been turning On/Off the boxes but would like to have a setting that allows use of both.

Has anyone found a fix/work around that allows the use of both of these options?

Answer:File Explorer Multiple Selection Using BOTH Check Boxes AND Shift Key

Sorry, I don't like the check boxes so I leave that turned off permanently. Actually, I hardly use the Shift key either, come to think of it.

For all my file selection needs I use the Ctrl key, in combination with a click to select a file or click-and-drag to select multiple files. Try it: click on a file to select it, hold down Ctrl and click another to add it to the selection. Or 'Select all' then Ctrl-click to deselect a few individual files.

Hello to Windows Seven Forums!

I am sorry for the bad english. I have a simple question.. Is there a way to sort Display Language selection.. I have install all language available and now it is this:

The chinese (full) and the chinese (simplified) is on the highest and lowest.. portugese (brazil) and portugese (portugal) is not together.. europe and asia and etc language are all mixed in no order..

How to sort? This is not the urgent problem but thank you for the answer.

Answer:How to sort Display Language selection?

If you can't right click and sort by name, Then I don't think you can sort them.
Sorry.

Out of curiosity in what order did you install them in? they may go by the order you installed rather then name.

Hope this Helps...

I have many folders (with a couple of thousand files) configured to display sorted by date. When using software and needing to open a file from within the program, it opens what looks like an Explorer window. However, the sort order is always by name initially and it takes a minute or so to suddenly display in the correct sort order as specified in Windows itself.

If I repeat this a few minutes later it goes through the routine all over again!

Running explorer from win8 itself is no problem, it remembers the sort order. Is there a way to make third party software that calls up an explorer window do the same please?

Incidentally having given up on the truly slow and clumsy windows search function, I installed Search Everything and it is instant and reliable. Why can't Microsoft Search be like that?

Answer:explorer forgets sort order

Search Everything only looks for files and folders. It is not capable of looking inside files for specific data. To find things, all it does is look at the pre-generated index of files and folders.

I'm not knocking it, I use it all the time but it is not a true search program.

Hopefully my question is clear from the following illustration. In short, I cannot understand why my files and subfolders are not getting sorted into the logical order I expect. Pretty sure thet were correct under my previous XP PC. All folders should come first. And several files are not sorted. Yet the great majority are!

Answer:Explorer sort order puzzle

How do you want them sorted/displayed?

By name?
By date modified?
By file type?

Windows handles this by default to a certain extent and I don't think that behavior can be changed easily.

But if you click any of the headings (such as "Name" or "Date" or "Type") it ought to sort the folder contents by that variable.

Also, see here:

I have been using Outpost Firewall Pro v2.1.303.4009 for a while now, but when I try to use an up-to-date firewall (outppost or sygate) I always have the same problems.

When I try to load or save anything (after installing the newer versions) using any program (even basic ones like notepad) I can't access the selection bar at the top of the file selection dialog. The menu is there but when I click on the button the load/save box freezes.

I know it's Outpost because when I shut it down the problem stays but when I uninstall it the problem goes, I use 2.1 and everything works fine.

I'm not very cluey with the Outpost settings so I don't know if it's a simple setting I have turn of.

I don't know it's a conflict or not, but I have noticed it seems to start when I have both new firewalls and Alcohol installed

Anyway, anyhelp would be greatfully appreciated as I gather that I should upgrade for computer security reasons lol

I have a HUGE problem.
I have an access 2007 database. I have used it im my VB 2008 project. I have a table called Reps (where the reps ID's are stored), and I have a table for each rep with their corrosponding customer's names.
Table: Reps(1)
Field: Reps (2)

Table: Spencer Customers (3)
Field: SpencerCustomers(4)

Then in my VB form, i have dragged the entire database to my form. I have created a combobox where you can select the reps name, from the Reps Table (2).
NOW this is where it is becoming tricky.
In the "Customer" textbox, This is what i want:
When you have selected RepsCombobox's selected rep name, i want only spencer's customers to appear in the "customer textobx". As a Combobox. Make sense to anyone? It would be easy to populate just one record, but i want to populate it with the corrosponding rep's customer list.

I have gotton this far:
Prvate Sub CustomerTextBox_TextChanged(ByVal sender As System.Object, ByVal e As System.EventArgs) Handles CustomerTextBox.TextChanged
If RepComboBox.SelectedIndex = "Spencer" Then
RawMaterialsDataSet.Spencer_Customers.SpencerCustomersColumn = CustomerNameString. (I dont think this is right or what i should be doing further)

End If

Hello folks,

I have changed the sort order of some of my items in the left navigation pane of the Windows Explorer (see screenshot).
However, upon rebooting only the Dropbox icon will jump back to its old place.
The registry entries are being overwritten back to what they were before I changed them and I would have to do the same process all over again.
Anyone of you knows the reason for that? And perhaps even a solution, how to keep the sort order permanently?

(changed both entries to "94")

Thanks in advance.

Kind regards

I was told to also post this iunder this category.

I'm about to tear out my hair. First Windows Explorer keeps stopping, searches for solution then restarts. About the time this problem, I noticed that Windows Explorer will change the original creation date on some of my files. It might be all files in folder or just certain types. I've yet to make a connection with when this is happening or what is causing it. Not necessarily when Windows Explorer stops. It's difficult when you can't tell which is the oldest/newest file in a folder.

I'm running Windows 7 64 bit, which I keep updated, McAfee, AntiMalware Bytes and SuperAntiSpyware, also all updated.

I'm begging! Can someone help me please?

Thanks,
Lisa

The Windows Photo Viewer will not display photos in the order they are sorted by Windows Explorer.
This is not referring to the slide show feature, just the forward and back arrows.
The only order pictures can be viewed is by name despite Windows Explorer being set at view by date, ascending.
I have repaired Microsoft Live Essentials, uninstalled and reinstalled but the issue remains.
This is also not an issue with photo tags or photo names.
Windows Explorer sorts as selected but click a picture in the middle to view, click the forward arrow and instead of the next date picture being viewed, the next name picture is viewed.

Hi!

I upgraded to Windows 10 recently as well, I have the same problem and I also have a solution. However, I do not know, if it is ideal. :-)

What is obviously missing is an entry in the registry called DropTarget. This entry tells Windows Photo Viewer to display the images in the sorting order of the folder Photo Viewer got called from.

Non-solution:
I saw that at least in my registry there is a DropTarget defined in HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\Applications\photoviewer.dll\shell\open\DropTarget. Win 7 did it, and Win 10 did. I have my downloads go to E:\Downloads, like to keep them separate. Win 10 use to show first the files by date, and then any folders under them. Now it is showing all folders first and then the downloaded files. I have tried everything in the view/group by, and sort by to try and get it back to where it was but no luck. Any suggestions?

Thanks

Answer:File explorer has changed the order it shows stuff

Hello Maddad,

If you have your Downloads folder in "Details" view, click on the "Name" column title bar to have it sorted descending by name.

That should have the files on top, and folders on bottom like below.

Not sure if this is an annoying bug that everyone knows about by now, but I'm hoping there's a setting or registry value I've overlooked.

Here is how to reproduce and some loverly pictures.

1. Open File Explorer to a folder with multiple files and select one with left click.
2. Right click on that same file and you'll get your normal context menu.

3. However, if you right click any other folder or file besides the already selected ones, you will clear the selection and not get the context menu for the file or folder that you right-clicked on.
In previous versions File Explorer behaved rationally and a selection event was presumed when right-clicking an unselected item.

Are we out of luck until MS fixes this or is there a remedy?

Windows 10 Home x64 version 1607 build 14393.351 - what's yours?

Hmm, looking closer at the first screenshot I can see one possible reason - you're not actually right-clicking on the second file, rather slightly to the right of it. The left edge of the context menu is the giveaway - it always appears aligned with your mouse pointer. Try actually clicking over the text of the second file name (as you appear to have done in the second screenshot). Anywhere else and you get the context meny for the folder your files are in. The only exception is if you right-click anywhere on the highlighted line of a selected file when you do get the file's context.

BTW, my Win7 PC behaves exactly the same way.

Greetings all,

I've recently started using Windows XP after a lifetime on various generations of the Mac OS. There's one little thing that I can't seem to work out, although it appears trivial. It's the following: there are some directories that contain both directories and files. What I would like to see now (and I'm using detail view, sorted alphabetically by name) is a true alphabetical order. For some or other reason, Windows insists on separating directories from files, so that when I sort, first I see an alphabetical list of directory names from a to z and then a list of filenames, again from a to z. That's a little strange though, for I didn't ask, nor have I ever, Windows to sort by kind! Yet that's what it's doing...

Is there any way to change this behaviour?

Thanks for your comments.

I wish my windows explorer would sort my files easier. Currently when I add a file to a folder to make it re-sort I have to uncheck "Auto Arrange" and then re-check it, and then hit F5 to refresh. It's usually easier to insert my files manually sorted. I'd be satisfied if I could just STOP windows explorer from remembering the old position when it refreshes or opens the folder again, and sort it anew.

Thanks for any suggestions.

I just wanted to share a fix I have for a problem I was experiencing with windows explorer.

The problem is clicking on a directory with a bunch of files in it (that has been set to sort by date as default) is painfully slow , like 3 or 4 secs. If the directory is set to sort alphabetically then every thing is ok.

after much pain I found the problem to be down to my anti-virus solution, I was using Panda cloud anti-virus. Once uninstalled the problem is removed. clicking on the same directory opens it instantaneously. hope this saves someone from the same frustration I had.

Answer:date sorting in windows explorer slow

Panda Cloud is quite annoying and requires lots of fixes and improvement...when i used it previously it used to say that i am not connected to the internet whereas i was. But indeed Panda has a quite good detection ratio.

I have an issue with how Windows Explorer is sorting my files now and I can't figure it out despite searching for a solution.

If I open Windows Explorer, then select any folder in the far left pane, then View > Sort by... > and select Name and Ascending, all my folders and files sort correctly with "A" at the top to "Z" at the bottom. However, If I get an file as an email attachment or print to pdf or generally try to save or save as ... any file, when I get the the Win Exp window to select where I want to save that file, all the files and folders are sorted as Descending. In that window, there's no View or option that I can see to re-set the sorting preferences.

How do I get it to sort in Ascending order again?

Thank you.

Answer:How to correct sorting issue in Windows Explorer

In the detail view, you should be able to click on the Name column to toggle ascending/descending.

OK, so i put a whole load of pictures taken on the same night with different cameras into a folder, but the different cameras give the pictures different names and as such theyre all sorted in a silly order, just by name.
I know that by right-clicking and selecting 'arrange icons by> picture taken on' would sort out the problem...but for some reason when i right-click its not one of the options! Anyone know how to get that option back? The folder is customised as a photos folder...and only contains jpeg images, so i don't understand why i cant choose to arrange them by picture taken on, when i can do it in other similar folders!

I'm using Windows XP and my second hard drive is 100 GB with compression allowed, formatted NTFS. My problem is that files starting with numbers, especially multiple numbers, do not sort correctly. Files names starting with the alphabet sort fine. I checked the Knowledge Base and found that files starting with 10 consecutive numbers (all the same) did not sort due to an XP bug that was fixed with SP1 a, but that did not seem to apply to my problelm. Any ideas?

It puts the ones with numbers before letters. Kinda like the "letters" before A.

I set a folder to sort the files within it in date order, but it appears to have also applied this sorting method to the other folders within the root directory (it is a folder within the pictures library). Is there anyway to set it so that only the one folder has it's files sorted by date?

Thanks in advance

Answer:Windows Explorer 'Sort By'

Hello krustykobb,

In libraries, folder view settings are shared with all included folders in the library no matter which folder it was set in.

To have individual folder views, you would need to view the actual folder itself. For example, at "C:\Users\(user-name)\Pictures" instead of in the Pictures library.

Hope this helps,

Also the enter key will not allow bypassing the timer. I recently reinstalled both OS but it never worked previously when I had Windows 7 x86 and XP x64 on a dual boot.

During the install, during the several restarts that occur when you are doing an install it will work and I could select but now I cant. The keyboard is a USB keyboard with wireless mouse.

Any ideas?

Double check in your BIOS settings to make sure that you have the USB Keyboard support at boot option enabled. Next, double check to see if you have both operating systems listed and have enough time selected to display them at boot.

When I sort files in programs like MS Word, Excel, and others, sort is lightning-fast. When I sort files in Windows Explorer, the process is painfully slow. Explorer tells me my searches are slow because index isn't running. I turn on Index when prompted to do so, but when I check it in Index Options, it always reports it's not running.
When I drill down to a folder, right-click on it, and click the Customize tab, I make sure the default setting of "General Items" is set. Still very slow sort. I've tried the other settings, too, but the slow sort continues.
Thumbnails appear very slowly, too, when I look in jpeg directories, for example.
I'm talking about folders with 250 to about 400 files. As I recall, Windows Explorer sort in XP was blazingly fast--at least for me. Same number of files, or more.
Windows 7 is up to date, and I'm using only a fraction of the total hard drive space. Plenty of RAM (see specs). How do I get that fast sort again?

Answer:Windows Explorer Slow Sort

Check and make sure the Windows Search Service is running first. If it is, then run a CHKDSK. Then run a Defrag.
If you don't know how to do any of this, here you go:

Step 1. Check the Windows Search Service is running
Click Start
Click Control Panel
Click Administrative Tools
Click Services
Find the Service called "Windows Search"
Make sure it is running, and set to Automatic.
If not, start it and change the Startup Type to "Automatic"
Step 2: Run a CHKDSK (Check Disk)
Click Start
Click Run, and type in "cmd" (without quotes), and make sure to check Run with Admin privs.
If Run isn't there, type in "cmd" (without quotes) in the Search box. An icon will appear saying cmd. Right click it, and select "Run as Administrator". You may have to enter an admin password.
A black box will open. Type the following: "chkdsk c: /f" (without quotes)
It will give you a message saying it cannot check the volume since it is in use, and ask you to allow it to do it on a reboot. Answer "Y" (Yes). After that, reboot the computer. You will see a blue background with white text doing a check on the disk. Don't worry, it will complete by itself in 5-15 minutes, and then reboot.
Step 3: Run a Defrag (MAY help your issue)
Click Start
Click Run, and type in "cmd" (without quotes), and make sure to check Run with Admin privs.
If Run isn't there, type in "cmd" (without quotes) in the Search box. An icon will app... Read more

How can I set the defaults for "Windows Explorer" or whatever it is now called.

I want it to ALWAYS for every "folder" I ever open, ever again to eternity, to have sort by file type as one the the few defaults listed. By "type" I mean file extension. I want to set this one time in one spot and have it stick. Currently I have to go through several menus and scrool to the bottom of a long list to turn this on because it's not one of the defaults. Next folder I open -same thing again. Very annoying. I have to sort lots of "folders" and separate file types.

Every single review about surface/windows RT has limited app selection as a CON and saying the tablet app is no comparison with iOS and Android. They group Android and iOS together, make it looks like Android tablets have the same app selections as iPAD. While I agree that iOS is way ahead of RT at this moment (both quantity and quality), I doubt that Android really have that much advantage over RT in terms of tablet app selection. My knowledge is a bit dated, but last time I used my Nexus 7 (late 2012), the tablet optimized apps was very limited. Most of the apps I used were phone apps enlarged. I understand that theoretically, Android apps should be rescaled based on resolution and screen size, but still, using up-scaled phone apps on a tablet is not a great experience. However, since phone apps do work (even not optimized), I believe developers have less incentive to make a tablet version. If data from Metrostorescanner.com is to be believed, Windows 8 store has 124,437 windows apps as of now. I believe over 90% is compatible with Windows RT. So unless tablet apps grown significantly on android in the last 10 months (I dont know honestly), I seriously doubt that Android has more tablets optimized than RT. Also, a lot of the functions of the android apps (especially system tools) are baked into windows system, i.e. task managers/ file managers/Network drives/network utilities etc. In fact, many Android apps are trying to mimic windows system tools.
Simply put, in terms of ... Read more

Answer:Is Android Tablet APP selection is really more than Windows RT/8?

Simply put. Yes.
I run Windows 8 on my PC, own a Surface 2 - answer to your question = yes, android has more apps.
However, your angle on necessity of those apps is correct. It's all down to the user - see what you would use a tablet for then ask / do research on if there's either an app for it, if it's built in or if there's another way to go about it. I've found that a lot of apps are unnecessary because of the full-fletched browser.

Hi
I am running two operating systems on my Samsung series 3 laptop:
1/ Windows 8.1 from my internal hard drive.
2/ Ubuntu 13.10 from an external San Disk extreme USB flash drive (very fast).

To start Windows 8.1 I just press the power button, to start Ubuntu I press F10 after pressing the power button then select Ubuntu.
My Problem is that my boot device screen shows the wrong information and also repeats itself.
The screen reads as follows:

Please select boot device:
Windows Boot Manager (PO: Hitachi HTS547550A9E384)
Ubuntu (PO: Hitachi HTS547550A9E384)
Windows Boot Manager (PO: Hitachi HTS547550A9E384)
Ubuntu (PO: Hitachi HTS547550A9E384)
Enter set up

Is there an easy way of removing the duplicate script and make the Ubuntu selection show the correct device.
The top two are the only ones that work.

Sorry for the length of the letter.
Regards.

Dear TechSupportGuy,
This is now my 3rd attempt to install windows 7 pro 64-bit on the correct HD.

I have 2 sata drives... the one being the 150GB drive I wish to install the OS on.

I also have two old scsi drives connected.

Through the win 7 boot disc, I have deleted the partitions on my 150gb sata and the 2 scsi drives.

I select my 150gb sata for the installation and click "next".

Win 7 has been installed on the master scsi drive both times.

For whatever reason, win 7 will automatically install on the master scsi drive.

I am going to try to do a quick format on the 3 drives again, pull out the two scsi drives, and then install it on my sata.

Any feedback on this issue would be appreciated!

Thanks!

Please bring your signature into compliance (3 line max.). You can put the computer stuff into the Computer specs part of your profile. An Administrator can cure your name curse. PM one of them and ask for a name change.

Before booting to the Windows 7 install DVD I'd create the desired partition, format it NTFS, and give it a unique name. If necessary use a bootable partition editor such as GParted.

Answer:Daily selection of BSODs on Windows 7

I read five of the six minidumps and all of them cite the same Windows OS driver afd.sys Usually OS drivers are too general to be of much diagnostic help.

However, in your case it probably is one of the uncommon exceptions as afd.sys is a system kernel driver, aka "AFD Networking Support Environment" and is part of the Windows TCP/IP stack.

In other words, this driver is important for networking. From researching corruption of this driver can be due to infection. So run a security scan.

Second, it is probably more due to your NIC drivers need updating. Go to Acer's website, find your exact model and update your wireless drivers from there.

I built two systems over the weekend. Both have Windows XP Home (SP2) installed. On the first system the HDD shows up as the usual C drive in "My Computer and Windows Explorer and the CD drive is the D drive. On the second system the HDD shows up as F Drive. C and D are some unkown USB removable devices and E is the CD drive. I do not know what those removeable USB drives are. I do have a card reader and front USB ports that are plugged into the USB connectors on the mobo, but nothing else. No pen drives or any other USB devices. Any ideas?

How does windows select drive letters? Do BIOS settings and order make a difference with Windows naming drives? When installingWindows, I didn't get a prompt to name my drive(s). Is there some way to reorder the drives so that the HDD is the C drive? I know that simply renaming the drive doesn't work.

What happens is that it boots to the screen where it says " Windows Xp Professional is Loading with the bar moving right " and right before the " Selection Screen " where you can choose your accounts, it RESTARTS.

This happens continuously loading, then restarting before the SELECTION screen.

I have asked a variety of people with experience and we have tryed many things such as :

- Safe Mode / Start Windows Normally/ Last configuration start

- Recovery Mode - chkdsk /r and /p

- Recovery Mode - Manual steps to recover a corrupted registry that prevents Windows XP from starting

- Booting with Windows CD

- Ultimate Boot Disk (Memory Check - Memtest86)

I do not want to reinstall windows because that would mean losing some drivers, etc which are located in windows, and some of the drivers i dont have or will take a very long time to find and download.

On my external hard drive, I have a ton of photos from different cameras that retain the weird file-naming scheme that the camera implements so the order is weird and out of whack. I've been wanting to organize these photos and thought the best way to do it would be to sort it by date; however, when I click the sort-by date tab, it takes FOREVER to sort it.

It's weird because this seems to only happen with certain folders and not others within the same drive so I'm pretty baffled as to why this happens and how to fix it.

I tried to do a search on the forum to see if anyone else encountered a similar problem by searching the word "sort" but I came up empty. Any help would be appreciated!

Answer:Problems with Sort by Date in Windows Explorer

Well that was quick... of course I find the solution after I make a post.

I don't know if this solution is permanent but I hope it is. Basically, what I did was I optimized the folder for "General Files" after going to the folder's Properties and clicking the "Customize" tab.

is there a way to sort 'like a library' in windows explorer (omit 'The ' and 'A ' from file names)? i.e.
i have the files (sorted as windows would normally do with sort by name):

A File 4.ext
A File 2.ext
File 3.ext
File 7.ext
The File 1.ext
The File 5.ext
The File 6.ext
The File 8.ext
The File 9.ext
...

and i want:

The File 1.ext
A File 2.ext
File 3.ext
A File 4.ext
The File 5.ext
The File 6.ext
File 7.ext
The File 8.ext
The File 9.ext

i do not want to rename my files like this:

File 1, The.ext
File 2, A.ext
File 3.ext
File 4, A.ext
File 5, The.ext
File 6, The.ext
File 7.ext
File 8, The.ext
File 9, The.ext

or this:

File 1.ext
File 2.ext
File 3.ext
File 4.ext
File 5.ext
File 6.ext
File 7.ext
File 8.ext
File 9.ext

please note the file name formats are actually 'The Film.avi' or 'The TV Show SXXEYY.mp4' (where XX is the Series andY Y is the Epesode as a double digit numbers)

if there is anyway to do this or a 3rd party program that will work with network sharing (my files are not on the local machine but a file server running windows 7)

i have windows xp sp3 professional. this problem has nothing to do with user settings as it happens on clean installation as well.

making a file in explorer, beginning with tilde, example:

~system related

now its normal that in xp newly created files are at the bottom before you hit refresh. thats not the problem.

i'm using details view, arrange icons by type, auto arrange.

and when i browse to a folder that already contains a file that starts with a tilde for example, the file is always displayed on bottom. but. when i hit refresh, files starting with a tilde are displayed at top. in popup browsing menus, files starting with a tilde are also displayed on top. but on initial folder navigation they are always displayed on the bottom and you have to hit refresh in order to see them on top.

but if i make a file like: !test

for example, this file will always be on top and so will every file starting with an exclamation mark. so is there some kind of fix to this sorting inconsistencies, either that the files remain on bottom or top.

for starters, you that have xp, can you reproduce this problem on your systems?

i did the search engine part and all results explain the problem with logical number sorting and difference between auto refresh on 7 and no auto refresh on xp, but nothing about this.

Sometimes Windows Explorer seems to fail to sort files into the correct order. In the attached image, which is the list of files in the folder Receipts, which you can see from the little arrow I have requested to be sorted in ascending order of file name, why are the files ADCreceipt1211xx.pdf. ADCreceipt1211xy.pdf, ADCreceipt1212xx.pdf and ADCreceipt1301xxSWREG.pdf listed before the file ADCreceipt120501.pdf? By any sort algorithm that I can imagine, 1205 ought to come before 1211, oughtn't it?

Is this possibly something to do with the strange phenomenon in recent versions of Windows that Explorer seems incapable of showing recently changed files (i.e. files recently created, deleted or renamed). This gives some really strange effects, such as when you delete a file and then rename a different file to the same name as the deleted file. If you don't believe me, try it!

Any suggestions on how to get around these problems?

Thanks - Rowan

Hello guys, i recently installed windows 7 on my computer, thus making it a triboot system anyways the problem i have is this imgur: the simple image sharer , now what i want to do is bring the Local Disk(F) to the top place on the left hand side(like this imgur: the simple image sharer) and the only way i can do this is going to sort by percent full or amount of free space but whenever my disk space changes its position also changes so i can't do that, so any help would be appreciated.

Answer:How to sort windows partitions in windows explorer

Windows arranges HDD by usage and Drive Letter and percentage. There is no way to arrange them.

I also see you have three partition that are low on disk space I would recommend doing a Disk Clean up on them. Windows requires at least 15% disk space to defrag the HDD.

Go to start type in then hit enter
Code:
diskmgmt.msc
post a screen shot in your next post.

Is there a way to select files using mouse / marquee like it's done in XP?
In Windows 7/8, the marquee selects all across the page including date modified, type, size ect, whereas in XP only the name is selected - as in pics.

So recently i decided to give linux a try and heard that Ubuntu was a great starting point, with me being very uneducated in this field, i went ahead and installed ubuntu 12.04 LTS with the Wubi installer on a separate external HDD. Well within the last couple of days i have had no luck to get ubuntu working correctly at the start up! It will always provides me with an error statement when i try to load it up stating "missing or corrupted file: \ubuntu\winboot\wubildr.mbr" although i checked the directory and the file was in the correct folder and i have tried to replace the file! I have tried to re-install ubuntu (with wubi) many times but this does not seem to work. Anyways, with my frustration towards the installation of ubuntu i went to youtube to look for solutions and found this video: youtube.com/watch?v=6_92aKSu4Es i went into the command prompt and entered "bcdedit" then "bcdedit /delete {current}" (current was my identifier code). I thought this would solve the problem but it made it worst, now i no longer see the Windows 7 boot option! so i believe when i entered those commands to delete the current identifier that deleted the windows 7 boot option! I dont think that i damaged the OS but rather deleted the boot menu option for windows 7. Since then i have no idea how to get it back. please help i am very lost and any help is very appreciated! Image I am wondering i some their is a command in ubuntu, once i install it correctly, if i ca... Read more

Answer:Urgent Help with Windows 7 boot selection recovery!

I would have asked a lot earlier than now. Everything you've done may have compounded the problem. However as long as Win7 remains on the disk the files can be rescued using Copy & Paste - in Windows Recovery Console.

But to try to repair it you must first confirm the Win7 or it's 100mb System Reserved partition (preferred if you have it) is the Partition Marked Active or it will never repair. Once you set the Active flag, run Startup Repair - Run 3 Separate Times.

Be sure to keep all other drives unplugged during the repairs.

Hi,
has any of you don't have translucent selection rectangle slow and laggy on Windows 7/8 ?

I have tested many Windows 7 and 8 machines and on all of them there is lag and selection box is slow.
Lag is due to the v-sync enabled (which is very bad choice made by Microsoft for user experience) but why is it slow?
When selection box gets bigger and bigger it gets slower. When it is big for the whole screen I can always see it's moving choppy.
That would be explainable 20 years ago, when computers didn't have enough power to calculate translucent rectangle for the whole screen, but today? Every game renders tens of full screen transparent rectangles with fancy shaders few times per frame with 100 frames per second.
Even if I really tried I couldn't write program that draws transparent rectangle slower than hundreds frames per second. And in Micso

And for the lag: in Windows XP selection box is not laggy, because of two things:
* no v-sync, so every new frame is put directly to the screen as soon as possible
* nice trick of predicting the movement of mouse and drawing selection box ahead

This is video of selection box on Windows XP:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=m-za...ature=youtu.be

And here on Windows 7:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=v-ye...ature=youtu.be

Both made on the same machine, dual core with GeForce GTX 260 - a card surely capable of drawing a transparent rectangle every frame. Hundred times.

Noticed the lag on 7? I can't stand it, it ruins the whole experie... Read more

Hi;

I'm using recently reformatted a separate hdd for Windows 7. It previously has a Windows 7 Basic but I reformatted it to have Windows 7 Professional x86. My problem it lets me select an OS after the boot. I have to select from 2 Windows 7's. When I select the first on the list it would go on to the Windows 7 Pro, but the second one it gives an error. So I have to select the "first" Windows 7 everytime I start/restart the system.

How can I remove that "second" Windows 7 selection?

I had this similar problem before when I tried having a Windows 7 hdd as Primary Master and a Windows XP SP3 as Secondary Master hdd. The boot sequence was retained even after I have removed and formatted the former Windows 7 (Primary Master) to Windows XP SP3. It would let me select from Windows 7 and an older OS even when the Windows 7 was already removed. I had to resort to formatting both drives to Windows XP SP3.

Help please

Answer:[SOLVED] Remove 2nd Windows 7 selection on boot

Time to remove the "second windows 7" boot option, here's how to do it:

1.) Right click on My Computer and click properties
2.) On the left hand side choose "advanced system properties"
3.) navigate to "advanced" tab and choose "settings" under Startup and Recovery
4.) select your default operating system; in this case select your Windows 7 Professional
5.) I recommend unchecking "time to display list of operating systems"

That's it! Click Okay and reboot

My main computer needed a motherboard RMA so I slapped together another with some old parts. The current OS on it is XP so I am attempting to replace it with my copy of Windows 7 Home Premium. When attempting to install after it goes through the black screen with the grey bar loading windows files I do not get any options, such as language select. The screen is just the Windows 7 background and nothing else, I also own a copy of Windows 7 Ultimate and it is doing the same thing. Anyone run into this problem before?

Help!

So my work laptop is a Lenovo t440s running Win7 Enterprise.
I was playing around with trying to make a bootable USB so that I could run my own environment on my work PC with a quick reboot.

Anyhow, I tried to reboot the work laptop earlier and ended up with the following error:
Windows 7: Boot selection failed because a required device is inaccessible

I cant seem to get into system repair, or anything. I also don't have a CD drive in the laptop and finally to make issues worse, my only other machine (what im on now) is a Mac running El Capitan.

From all my reading I'm pretty sure its something to do with the MBR being messed up, but I just don't know how to fix it.

I've build a windows 7 virtual machine using VirtualBox and popped the HDD out and into a caddy. Not sure if this makes it any easier or not, but it meant that from in the virtual machine I could at least see the HDD in Disk Management.

Here's a screen shot:

https://www.dropbox.com/s/9lo18i13na...15.54.png?dl=0

I've tried booting the virtual machine install see if I can go down the repair route that way but it just doesn't see the HDD or windows installation.

Any help will be massively appreciated and might just save my ass.

Ok, so I built a new computer, the parts list is here
Intel Core i5-6500, PowerColor Radeon R9 390, NZXT S340 (Black) - System Build - PCPartPicker
Now I put everything in but the GPU, for whatever reason there wasn't any PCIE cables that came with and this was my first built so I had no extras. Then, I tried to see if I could start it up, I got it going and used a USB 2.0 external optical drive for the windows disk, the disk is actually an alienware one I had. So, I set up in BIOS to boot from there, it starts, I see windows is loading files. Then I see the windows loading screen for a moment. After that it reaches the language selection screen. At this point it is frozen and I cant seem to fix it. I uave tried using USB 2.0 ports for my mouse and key board. I had seen that as an issue. Again this is my first build so I am not to knowledgable as to what might be wrong. Any ideas?

All,
Windows Explorer is sorting files on a network drive always by name. It doesn't save sorting by modification date. Where can I reset this behavior?
We had temporarily activated GPOs at "User Configuration," / "Preferences" / "Control Panel Settings." / "Folder Options (Windows Vista and later)." / (Hide Extensions for Known File Types), but I think that's not
directly related.
Thank you in advance.

I'm using Win10 Anniversary Update.

After getting the Anniversary Update, I noticed that the drop-down list in Windows Explorer no longer appears when one clicks on it under "Details View." Please, see the image below:

For example, let us say that I wanted to organize the files only by .PDF. There is now no way to see only those files, since no matter how much one clicks, the list will not appear.

This occurs for ALL of the sort lists: File Name, Date, etc.

Can anyone advise or help?

Thanks!

Whether I am using Windows Explorer or Explorer++, my files are being sorted by name like this:201312XX.jpg201506xx 1.jpg20131117 1.jpg20120217.jpg20130701 2.jpg20140126.jpg20150101.jpgThe correct format should be in numerical order:20120217.jpg20130701 2.jpg20131117 1.jpg201312XX.jpg20140126.jpg20150101.jpg201506xx 1.jpgSo it must be something the OS is doing? In other folders with other files, things look correct.Any thoughts?Thank you.I reply as fast as I can, but it could be hours or months. Always busy.

Answer:Question about the way Windows Explorer Sort files list

On both my Win 7 and Win 8.1 I get this (not quite either of what you showed, although much closer to the first list):201312XX.jpg201506xx 1.jpg220120217.jpg20130701 2.jpg20131117 1.jpg20140126.jpg20150101.jpgWhen you list what you call "the correct format", is this by comparison with another Win 7 or Win 8.1 computer or is it based on some idea of your own? The reason for asking is there have been subtle changes in the sorting algorithm over the years. This was what changed with XP:http://www.pcmag.com/article2/0,281...Always pop back and let us know the outcome - thanksmessage edited by Derek

Something I've pondered for a long time, and never actually gotten around to looking into:

How the $%#! does Windows Explorer decide what order to put the context menu items in? Does anyone know how to re-order it?

As far as I can tell, it's completely willy-nilly. It even seems to change from right-click to right-click. (Right-click on a few different folders. You'll see the same menu items, but sometimes the order will change for no apparent reason.)

Hi Everyone,

I upgraded my Win 7 X64 Ultimate to Win 10 Pro X64 for free of course. I created a Windows 10 repair disk under Backup/Restore. I did the same when I first got Windows 7 years ago. Under Windows 7, I was able to boot the repair disk and easily restore a system image that I take nightly (overkill I know), over the years I used it several times without a problem when my system got screwed up.

I can boot the Windows 10 repair disk BUT it gets to choose a keyboard and I can't choose a keyboard because mouse/keyboard do NOT respond at all. It just basically freezes on that screen.

So I ask a few questions:
1. Am I doing something wrong, has anyone tried this yet? Did you have better results?
2. Is there a better Windows 10 system repair disk I can download from somewhere to help me restore a Win 10 system image that I create nightly?
3. I tried a 3rd party Backup/Recovery product EaseUS Todo Backup, my Dell hard drive has 2 partitions (a dell MBR partition and the actual C drive), it backed up both partitions but that recovery disk didn't show both partitions to recover, only the MBR partition which was useless to me of course. Is there a Simple backup software just to copy the C drive 1 partition where my windows system resides, have a recovery boot disk that boots (EaseUS boot disks booted by the way) and to restore just the C drive partition that works under Windows 10?

Thank you for any help you can give me,
Steve

Answer:Windows 10 repair disk stops at keyboard selection

You may want to check in your BIOS to see, if USB is available before windows is loaded. Some mobo's has a setting to disable all USB for faster POST-times, and if that is the case, your mouse and keyboard (if connected via USB) will not work until windows is ready.

An other solution could be to find a PS2 keyboard to plug in when you must restore from the repair disk.

After reboot, if I select any windows object and right-click to pull up the object selection box, once the box goes away the selected entry remains behind and is in foreground mode, so it overlays all over programs. Clicking on it will not get rid of it.

Example: bring up windows explorer, select hard drive, right-click hard drive, select properties: The line saying "properties" with the full width of the original display box is shown on the screen after the rest of the selection box is gone. After the invoked program is gone, it still is there. Now I can bring up any program and the line with "properties" displays over the new program blocking whatever is in the background.

Once done, this does not happen again and the artifact remains where it first appeared, even if you use the same method and same objects as before. However, there are no additional artifacts.

Any ideas?

Hi guys! I'm new here and I have a problem that I hope you guys can help me with.

I had problems with Windows XP a while back and decided to reinstall it. Now I had XP SP3 cd that I had downloaded from Softpedia.com and I burned it into a CD and used it to install XP, now for some wierd reason it had an error about not copying some file (I can't remember what it was though ) and I simply clicked on skip file on the dialog box. Now obviously that file was important since when the computer restarted, displaying the Windows XP Setup boot selection, when I clicked on it it said it couldnt located this other crappy file and setup had to be aborted. So I aborted and selected the other boot selection, which was my old XP. Now the problem begins.

I finally got fed up with the problems in XP that I decided to install vista. Now everything when smooth and well, installing vista and all and even installed SP1 for Vista. But everytime I had to restart the damn XP setup selection is still there on the boot selection screen, and it still doesnt work!!!

Is there anyway to somehow get rid of it? I tried Easy BCD but it seems that it isnt located on the selection screen so I guess I cant get rid of it that way. I also deleted my old XP file becuase it was taking up space on my HD.

Please help me.. This is really starting to get on my nerves everytime I use the computer. Please any help is appreciated.

Hello!

Some days ago, I installed the Windows 7 Beta on an independent partition of my hard drive. By doing so, the OS selection screen which appears when you boot the computer changed. It showed "Earlier version of Windows" and "Windows 7".

Recently, I have uninstalled said beta but the selection screen remains the same... Windows 7 is still listed there but I can perfectly select Windows XP without any start problems! So, what I am looking for is to make that boot screen turn back into what it was, or just make it disappear. I only had Windows XP installed, so no OS selection screen ever showed up.

I tried to update my boot.ini file, but the system ignores it. There are two warnings when I open the file under XP:
Warning: Boot.ini is used on Windows XP and earlier operating systems.
Warning: Use BCDEDIT.exe to modify Windows Vista boot options.

I would love you forever if you helped me!

Hi

I have a Lenovo Thinkpad Twist laptop Windows 8 pro. I reset the laptop using the recovery partition to a factory state.
Now everytime I turn on the laptop it gives me a selection screen , and I have to press enter everytime. I don't have any other OS in the laptop, so I don't know why it doesn't default to the main OS. I searched on google and follows some instructions but none has worked.

I have reformatted the samsung internal drive , so it is unallocated right now. The main OS is installed in Hitachi.

I have attached a picture of the screen.

Any help.
