Move Dell Windows 7 Hard disk into non-dell hardware

Question: Move Dell Windows 7 Hard disk into non-dell hardware

My Dell N5050 laptop died and I tried moving the Harddisk into a old HP Deskpro. The disk boots fine but Windows 7 DELL OEM reboots as the windows picture comes up. It then allows me to do a repair but that doesn't help. The repair report doesn't give any clue to the problem.

I am guessing it is some fundamental driver that is Dell specific. Any idea how to sort it ?

The repair will allow me to get to a dos prompt.

Preferred Solution: Move Dell Windows 7 Hard disk into non-dell hardware

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Answer: Move Dell Windows 7 Hard disk into non-dell hardware

Welcome to our forum auror1968.

Their is a excellent chance that the OEM/SLP key, drivers and a lot more are tied to the Laptop and will not work on the Desktop.
Does you Desktop or Laptop have a Windows 7 sticker on it that looks something like this?

I bought a new Dell i3847 and it has Windows 7 Pro 64bit factory installed on it.
I wanted to do a full system backup, but the Dell Backup and Recovery software will not allow me to do a system backup.  Further, I have been unable to create a system recovery disk using Dell Backup and Recovery.
I can't use the Dell provided system disk for recovery because it is clearly marked Windows 8.1

1) Why is a Win 8.1 disk included with a Win 7 Pro 64bit system?
2) What is wrong with Dell Backup and Recovery that it:
a) can't create a factory recovery disk
b) won't allow me to create a system back up so I can return it to the factory state

It's been 2.5 hours and it is still "initializing disk" to create a factory recovery.  It usually fails somewhere during initialization or writing.    Spending hours for each failed attempt to create a factory recovery disk is NOT GOOD!

Answer:Help! - New Dell i3847 - Windows 7 Pro - Dell Recovery Disk is Win 8.1 & DBaR won't let me do a System Backup

It has now been 4 hours and Dell Backup and Recovery is sitting on "Initializing Disk" under create Factory Recovery Media

I can't have it take hours and hours, then fail and then try again.... then take hours and hours.... then fail ... then hours ... then fail...

My dell optiplex 740 will open windows ,so before this happened,i install windows 7 home premium instead of windows 7 professional. When it didn't install properly,my windows will not open after i restart my PC it keeps saying  The computer restart unexpectedly  or encountered an error.Windows installation cannot proceed. To install windows, click "OK"to restart the computer, and then restart the installation.this message keeps repeating itself every time i boot my pc up.I try to reset my PC factory settings, but it wouldn't work,do i need  to buy a Dell recovery disk to get my PC running?

Answer:My Dell optiplex 740 mini tower wont open windows. It wonnt install keeps repeating the same thing.Do i need to buy a Dell recovery disk?

Sounds like a faulty hard drive is the cause - F12 at powerup.  Boot to the Dell diagnostics and run an extended test (not just the quick test) on the hard drive -- you'll likely find it fails, in which case - replace the drive and reload.

So I have a 3 year old Dell E310 with XP MCE, with the Pentium 4 521 (2.8GHz,800FSB) and the motherboard is Dell Model 0JC474, which I guess can only be upgraded a little bit, to a 3.2 800FSB which I doubt would provide much improvement.

So the question is - if I buy a new PC with a new fancy schmancy processor, and I stick with XP, is it possible to simply install my current HDD into the new computer and retain all of my installed programs and settings? I have so many programs and custom settings it would take a lifetime to get a new PC to the same place.

Answer:Can I move Dell E310 (3100) HDD to new Dell PC?

Hi wantonsoup,
Welcome to Techspot.

Because you have configured your hardware to one PC then when you remove that hard drive and install it to a new PC more than likely it will fail to boot.
You could try but you must back everything up before the move.
If you had an external hard drive you could try making an image of that hard drive and then reinstalling windows on the new drive and then placing the image back. That may work. However again there may be some conflict.

I've got a new Inspiron 15 a couple of days ago with the following configuration:
Intel core  i7 7700HQ cpu
512GB SSD (bios reports M.2 PCIe ssd-0) -- no other hard drive
Graphics card NVidia Geforce GTX 1050 Ti
Screen resolution 3840 x 2160
My problem is that I cannot split the hard disk into 2 partitions nor can i shrink the partition on which windows is installed from within windows. I used both the windows gui (disk management) and the command line program diskpart.
Does anyone have any idea?

Answer:New DELL Inspiron 15 7000 denies to shrink windows installation hard disk drive

It sounds like you might have a 7567 Gaming system.  If so, Windows will shrink a partition if it can. I would not recommend using a third party utility to shrink it since problems could happen and you might lose the system.
If you need another partition, you should have an option to place a 2.5 inch drive in the system for that.

Hi, I had a GPU fail in my Dell Vostro 1500 laptop. The card that failed was an NVIDIA GeForce 8400 GS. The Vostro laptop actually can accept an NVIDIA 8600 GT card too. So I ordered the replacement part from Dell for the 8600 and they shipped me a refurbished unit.
The surgery to put in the new card took all night for hack like to do. I did not look carefully at the refurbished unit they shipped me as I was nervous handling the card (that I might break it).
But when I turned on the laptop after the installation, I did not get a pause at the BIOS saying “I see new hardware” like I did when I upgraded the RAM.
After the computer booted up I uninstalled the 8400 driver and then installed the 8600 driver. There was a snag at it’s possible that Windows automatically reinstalled the 8400 driver during one the required reboots but I KNOW that I wrote the 8600 driver over top at least (I had hoped to do a clean uninstall then reinstall but Windows tried to grab a driver for me).
So now when I right click on computers, properties device manager it shows the video as still the 8400 card. The 8400 card I removed has a sticker on it that says KU907 on it. The invoice for the 8600 that Dell sent for the 8600 says KU907 on it too.
I think I was sent the wrong part from Dell (I paid a higher price for the 8600 GPU) . Is it possible that a legacy driver is making the Vostro think it has the 8400 when the part IS an 8600. Or when I go to the Device Manager, does the computer physically c... Read more

Since a few weeks ago, my microphone has only been working when tilting the screen forward. I saw a previous discussion ( ) where people have reported similar problems. Although my laptop was still under warranty when I reported the problem to Dell, they proceeded to sending me an onsite technician with a repair microphone part who said that he could not replace just the microphone because I had a touchscreen (you would think Dell would have checked to send the right part), then a refurbished new screen that did not work at all on my computer, and then refused to solve the problem by arguing that my system was no longer under warranty (which it was not by the time they finally sent the non working screen and I called back to ask for another one to be sent—it was all problems from their side). Wondering if anyone has had a similar problem and if they were able to fix it themselves, as now my microphone is not working at all, not even when I tilt the screen.

I have also noticed the same problem for the touch screen. It only works when the screen is tilted forward, and I am afraid that, like the microphone, it will reach a point of no return. It seems to me that there is some faulty wiring from the screen components into the base. Any help would be much appreciated!

I now have two Dell PCs, one with XP and one with Vista, I want to use the new Vista machine for music, videos, entertainment apps, downloading MP3s, e-mail, browsing the net, etc. I also day-trade the stock market and I want to use the older Dell PC strictly for my stock trading platform software (planning on getting a new HDD and another XP Pro OS disk to do a fresh install of XP on the Optiplex).

As the title says, I want to remove the HDD from my two year old Dell Optiplex that's running XP Pro and install it into my new Dell XPS 420 that has Vista Home Premium loaded. I want to be able to boot to either OS in the XPS 420. I know I'll have to get the correct drivers for the XPS 420 components and install them onto the XP drive, but I don't want to have to reinstall XP on the HDD I'm moving to the new Dell XPS machine.

Anyone know if this is possible with Dell PCs? If so, what steps do I take after I've installed the HDD from the Optiplex into the XPS 420? Any help you guys can offer would be greatly appreciated as I don't want to loose my Adobe apps.

Answer:Move HDD w/XP Pro From Old Dell to New Dell w/Vista ?

It doesn't matter what brand the computer is, but what does matter is the order the operating systems are installed. You want to do a dual boot system, which would require installing XP first, and then Vista. I'm not much of a day-trader, but I can't imagine that Vista couldn't be used for that as well.

Oh, I see that you don't have discs for those programs anymore. If they aren't legally owned by you, I would remove those comments from your post. Supposedly, there is software that will let you set up a dual boot system after both OSes are installed, but I wouldn't trust something like that. I'd leave well enough alone right now, since you don't have the install discs, and leave both drives separate. If the old one isn't fast enough for you, you probably can do some minor upgrades for it.

Answer:Is it possible to boot my Dell through external hard disk

There are a number of BootCDs you could use. A good favorite of many is The Ultimate BootCD

Yes backup to USB flash, then install Xp clean (removing the partition when asked in the initial setup process)

Note, you do not need to create a new partition or even format the drive, as Windows setup will automatically create an NTFS formatted file system, on a non-partitioned drive, during Windows install.

I can connect a single hard disk to any of the five SATA ports and it works fine; however, if I connect more than one hard disk, the disk IDs show in the BIOS but not in Windows disk management or in Windows Explorer. The only disk that shows in Windows is the one that is connected to the SATA port with the lowest number.

Example: I connect a disk to SATA-2 and -4. Only the disk connected to SATA-2 is recognized in Windows disk management or Explorer.

I can't find a manual that even mentions how to deal with multiple hard disks -- or any hard disks for that matter.

Answer:Solved: Dell XPS 430 sees only one hard disk, regardless

Can anyone advise me on how I can recuperate my docs, I know there is software that one can use but have tried a few & no docs seems retrievable though as i saw some come up in a previsualisation form...

Thanks for any advice, help you can give me...

I hope you have not been using the pc since the format . . the more you use it the lower your chances of data recover are.

Try GetDataBack . . it has a pretty good track record.

I have a Dell XPS410 desktop that got a virus. I was having trouble cleaning it, and I'd been planning to put in a new hard drive anyway, so I got a new Seagate 3500320AS (500 gig, SATA).

I took out the old (infected) drive and put in the new drive, but it kept freezing during Windows XP installation using the Dell reinstall disks (Windows XP Home, SP 2).

Not being sure what was going on, and worried about the virus, I had a friend (on a different system) partition the drive and install XP Professional SP2, which he did without problems.

Putting the drive back into the Dell, it started to boot, but never finished. It would either hang or take me back to setup.

Here's what I tried and results:

* Found new BIOS for the XPS on the dell site, flashed the BIOS (no effect).
* Took out memory boards (4) one at a time and rebooted to see if one of them was bad
* Changed the SATA Controller from the DELL default of "RAID ON" to "RAID AUTODETECT / ATA." With this change the system boots, but hangs during operation (anywhere from 1 minute to 30 minutes or more into a session).
* Tried to reinstall Windows, but the seagate instructions say to hit F6 to load drivers. WHen I do that, the Dell installer will only look to drive A (my floppy) for drivers. I cannot find anywhere to download or extract driver files to put them on a 3.5 floppy.

I'm stuck, and frustrated, so I welcome ideas how to get this system back up.

I'm struggling to get my head around a recent problem. I have a Dell XPS8700 with a SAMSUNG SSD PM851 mSATA 256GB (C:), and a Seagate ST3000DM001-1ER166 (D:), and a HL-DT-ST DVDRWBD CH30N DVD drive, running Windows 10 home.
One day it boots and doesn't see the D:. No prior SMART errors, no warnings, just no D:
Windows tools don't see the disk.I uninstall recent windows updates.I update drivers recommended from Dell site to no avail
I boot into BIOS and can't see the disk.I try swapping the data cable for the DVDI try swapping powercable
No dice - but when the PC boots I can feel the disk vibrating as if its powering up.I boot into the Dell Diagnostic tool, run all diagnostics and it does see the disk.
I reboot and everything is fine. My D: is back. I'm baffled and relieved. For a week. Someone reboots and then D: is gone. I run diagnostics again and now it doesn't see the disk.

What does this mean?
Should I buy replacement SATA cables?
A replacement disk?

I am planning to buy New Dell Inspiron 15 series 7000. I would want to replace the harddisk with SSD by next year or so. But i wanted to know if i can have SSD along with hard disk in this laptop.
I wanted both good performance along with large storage. So i was wondering if i can have two disks at once.
Thanks in advance

Answer:Can i have SSD along with hard disk in New Dell Inspiron 15 series 7000

mSATA and mini-PCI express have the same form factor but are electrically different.   It doesn't look like any of the newer Inspiron 7000 series models have mSATA connectors -- the older 3rd generation ones did, though.
If you want an SSD along with a hard drive, you'll need to consider  an XPS system - not an Inspiron.

I had a hard disk crash on an old Dell D610 laptop. I purchased a used (guaranteed) replacement 80gb drive from a company in Hong Kong but my Dell diagnostics does not recognize it. How can I create a bootable CD on another computer that can possibly see it and format it. I tried DBAN to wipe it but DBAN also doesn't see the drive. Any other suggestions?

Answer:Dell diagnostics does not recognize replacment hard disk

Hello,Make sure that the drive is recognized in BIOS. The drive should be recognized even if it's not formatted. If it's not seen in BIOS, it doesn't exist as far as the computer is concerned. 1.) Turn on (or restart) your computer. 2.) When the DELL? logo appears, press <F2> immediately. If still not seen, remove and reseat the hard drive. Make sure you didn't damage any pins. Does it "plug in" securely? Some laptop hard drives require an adapter. If yours does, it would be on your old hard drive. If BIOS doesn't see it, chances are the drive is bad. If this is the case, you could slave it to a desktop system (using the appropriate adapter) to see if it spins and is recognized on a different system.

Cannot load O/s as a new HD has been Installed not seen

Answer:Cannot find driver for new hard disk Dell Laptop

If the mboard's bios Setup is NOT detecting the hard drive.....Some hard drives in older laptops have a gender adapter that's plugged into the pins on the original drive that must be removed and installed on the replacement drive. That's obvious because on the new drive you can see the pins, on the old drive it doesn't look the same because of the gender adapter. If the mboard's bios Setup IS detecting the hard drive, but your problem is the computer is not detecting a bootable hard drive, new hard drives (or used hard drives that have had their data deleted) have no data on them and cannot be seen by the bios as bootable (having had an operating system installed on them). That problem will go away after you have installed Windows on the drive from the Vista DVD, or after you have installed the contents of the Recovery disks for the specific model. If the bios Setup IS detecting the hard drive but the initial files loaded from the Windows DVD, or from the Recovery disk set for your specific model, are NOT detecting it...If the drive is SATA......This is about XP - it has no SATA drive controller drivers built into it.Similar applies to Vista - it has some SATA drive controller drivers built into it, but not all possible SATA drive controller drivers. You can provide the SATA drive controller drivers to Vista on other media other than a floppy disk, such as a flash drive, or you can set the SATA drive controller mode to an IDE compatible mode in the bios. I have a gx280 system, It won't boot up about 1 out of 3 times. The reason is not to find a hard disk. The messege shows me " No SATA hard drive". Whenever the computer failed to be booted up, I opened the case and replug the HDD cable in. It clears the problem so far. Also I replaced the HDD cable either but it still has the problem. The dell assistance in online say that the problem could be the cable or mothboard. I don't know what I should do now. Should I buy a new board or throw this Dell away? Or anyone has a solution for this?

Answer:Dell GX280: Won't find the primary hard disk?

That motherboard has a lot of trouble with bad capacitors which render the system to be now workable. If your capacitors (little barrel-like components about 1 to 1 2/4 inches high) are puffy, have rounded tops, or are leaking brown, black, or rust colored powered, the board is dead unless you have a tech nearby who knows how to replace them cheaply... about $60.

Otherwise, replace the cables with the SATA cables with the locking plugs and sockets... very cheap...

So again Dell is right, but not helpful.

My P.C has started giving an error. "No internal hard disk found". Press F1 to restart F2 to run setup utility F5 to run PSA.When I go to setup utility there sometimes it shows the fixed HDD, and sometimes there is written "None"...When I ran diagnostics, initially it did not give any error about hard disk. But now today diagnostic showed a message that "Hard disk not attached". I have to restart again and again to reach operating system.
Operating system also gave the error thrice "Your P.c have some issues" today the Stop code was Memory management.
What could be the problem....??

Answer:Dell Inspiron 15, Hard disk related issue.

It appears that the HDD (hard disk drive) could be intermittently failing. If you are in the operating system now, you should start saving your data (documents, MP3, pictures, etc.) to a USB HDD. We will need your exact model number to know what HDDs can be installed.

Hi Guys,

Last week I found my Laptop was hanging/lagging as soon as i get my Desktop screen. At first i thought it should be a Virus problem, but i had latest Kaspersky Internet security software. When i ran it, laptop freezes. Booted the laptop in safe mode and tried uninstalling few memory consuming programs, still no luck.

Ran Dell memory test and found a problem with Hard disk. I had 4 partitions(c:\ is primary where OS is installed). I formatted the C:\ drive and tried re-installing Windows Vista, but it was an failure, I tried this more than 10 times in different ways.

I had second thought to connect this Hard Disk to another computer as secondary drive and to move data to other drive. So I bought a new Hard Drive and Installed vista on it and it works fine.

I bought 2.5" Hard Disk connector and connected to laptop. It showed as Mass storage device connected, but when i went to "My Computer" I could not see the any other drives except the new drive.

I went to Disk Management and found the crashed drive and it showed as "Unallocated"

I seeked help of an expert but he said it will very expensive (>3500$) which is not affordable. I need an help. I have helped many of them in this forum to resolve their issues, lemme see if someone can help me on this.

DELL Dimension 4100, XP with SP2, Pentium III, 933 MHz, 256 RAMRecently my Start Up process hangs at the Dell BIOS screen, which says to click on DEL to resume.  However, doing so does not take me to the BIOS setup screen, but instead takes me right along to the Windows XP (Home) welcome screen (my objective of course.)  This issue is that the start up process used to go straight to the Windows XP screen without hanging up at the BIOS screen and requiring me to click on DEL.  Don't think I even used to see the BIOS screen in the normal start up process. I can only get into the BIOS setup by holding DEL even earlier in the start process -- while the screen is still momentarily black before BIOS appears.  All the BIOS settings are as various tutorials say they should be.   I tried resetting to default also.  Made no difference.I ran my Norton Cleanup Utility recently.  Not sure if that deleted something that caused this.  Also, seems like some time ago maybe this symptom occurred and "healed itself."

I have a Dell Dimension 4700C manufactured December 2004. It has an 80GB SATA hard drive that has many bad sectors and would not boot up. I was able to get all data off using HDD Regenerator program to repair ALL the numerous bad sectors and than I rewrote partition info using TestDisk and finally was able to get access to drive to scan and recover with NTFS GetDataBack

I was able to make Ghost images of the 47 MB Dell Utility partition and the 3500MB Dell Restore partition. The main Windows partition would not image with Ghost--it gave numerous structure errors/warnings and would close after clicking through about 4 messages

I tried creating 3 partitions on the new 320GB WD drive with Partititon Magic 8 roughly the same size and formatting as old 80 GB drive (except Windows partition which is approx. 225 GB in size)

Than I restored the 2 complete Ghost images back to those respective newly created partitions. When I tried booting the computer up with new hard drive and hit CTRL F11, I could not start Dell Recovery. I was able to temporarily set Dell Utility partition to active using Partition Magic, reboot and run Dell Diagnostics

I think where I went wrong was that when I restored the Ghost image of Dell Restore partition it showed up as FAT32 instead of the CP/M, Concurrent DOS, CTOS formatting that displayed in Partition Magic. So I ran TestDisk and changed the partition type to DE CP/M and tried rebooting and CTRL F11 to start Dell Recovery and it did not work. I als... Read more

I wouldn't even be asking how to do this for the following reasons:

1. License agreement: XP is meant to be installed on one system at a time. If it's already on the Dell and running currently running on the Dell, you can't activate it on YOUR system.

2. Dell version on a a regular system? Go buy yourself a real version of XP for your system, then ask us the installation questions later.

this morning i tried everything...nothing works,....well this is what happen.
--everytime i reboot i get
;"secondary hard disk drive 0 not found"
;"secondary hard disk drive 1 not found"
if i press F1 it works normally, also i can see the drives listed at my computer labeled correctly,if i turn off pc ,and then, turn on pc everything is ok.,,but at every reboot i have this black screen booting problm.
myp is a dell dimension 8200,xp pro/sp3 768 rdram.
-in device manager everything looks correct..

Answer:Secondary hard disk drive 0,1 not not found at bootup[dell pc]

Sounds like you have an option in your BIOS to 'halt at everything.' Meaning if there is anything missing or possibly wrong with the system your BIOS will stop making the user press F1 so that they notice was is wrong (or possibly wrong).

If nothing is wrong with the system then just choose the option of 'halt on nothing' or something similar in your BIOS.

100 GB hard drive worked well. One day - it stopped.
"Primary hard disk drive 0 not found
No bootable devices..."

No disks in BIOS are shown now

Same story couple months before that was with another 80GB harddisk.
Several files on drive C (FAT) though were corrupted (CHKDSK corrected that)

"Fun" is:
1) Harddisk works fine if placed into desktop PC, no problems with any diagnostics
2) laptop works fine with small size old 4 GB harddrive

Harddrive connector problem???? BIOS problem with nonstandard size harddisks (DELL sold this notebook only with 60 GB max). Old not supported firmware ?

Dell Customer Support after several diagnoistics by phone only suggested to buy ane more disk and check. But I afraid that most probably it will not work

Somethig similar was here (but guy does not respond)

Answer:Dell Laptop: Primary hard disk drive 0 not found

It says please reseat drive. I replaced my old hard drive and my new hard drive was working for 3 days. Then it came out with the same issue my old hard drive had. Please help, I don't want to buy a third hard drive

Answer:Dell Inspiron 1440 no hard disk drive found

If you installed a 7 mm drive, you likely need a spacer to ensure  it connects in place of the original drive, which is 9.5 mm in height.

I have a Dell XPS 15 9530 and I'm getting this message when I try to boot it up:
internal hard disk drive not found
to resolve this issue, try reseat the drive
No bootable devices--strike F1 to retry boot, F2 enter setup Menu, F5 enter PSA.
The drive shows up in the setup menu under mSATA. I have ran all the test in the ePSA Pre-boot System assessment. All the test pass, including the Hard Drive 0 test. Has mentioned in the message I have tried reseating my drive, with no success unfortunately.
I do not know what else to do.

Answer:Dell XPS 15 - internal hard disk not found message when booting

Do you have a single, mSATA drive, or an mSATA drive (32G, usually), plus a 2.5" hard drive?
If you have the 32+hard drive setup, it sounds like the hard drive has failed -- you'll need to replace that and reload everything (the OS is stored on the hard drive - the mSATA drive is just a cache).

I have a dell inspirion 9100 and I just recently installed a new dvd-ram drive because the old dvd-rw died...
I have a pioneer dvr-k16 and when I boot up it stalls for like 30 seconds now and then flashes "secondary hard disk drive 0 not found". Windows starts up like normal and my drive works, although I've only watched movies so far and haven't tried burning anything. How do I get the error message to go away? I've tried going into setup and that doesn't seem to help anything because I don't know what to do in there. I keep reading on other threads that you have to change the slave to cs or something like that but I have no clue as to how to do any of that or if that would even alleviate my situation. Maybe just a dirty computer? I do have two cats and I have fur balls floating all over the place that I can't seem to get rid of...that's a whole seperate issue of course. HELP?

Answer:secondary hard disk drive 0 not found on a dell laptop what do I do?

The bios in your laptop was set up to use your old drive, the specs on your new drive will be different.

First off, have a look at the drive you took out to see if it was set to master, slave, or cable select. To do this, have a look at the back end of the drive near the connector for the jumper setting, then make sure your new drive is set the same.

Then you need to go into the bios and look for any options to scan for hard drives (this will scan for optical drives too). You need to make sure its set to your new drive and not your old one.

If you don't know how to do any of this the your manual will help, if you don't have it you can probably download one from dell.

If you still have problems then let me know and i will do my best to help further.

I read most of the posts on this subject and found no answers.
I get this error with both the system hard drive and replacing it with a known working hard drive from another Dell system.
I tried loading default values, trying HDD0-3, SATA-1, tried both Legacy and UEFI, tried disabling RAID, also replaced HD cable.
The Bios will recognize the drives, but both Dell diagnostics and a Windows install cd give the error: no hard drive detected, or disk controller not supported.

Anything else I should try?
Thank you for your feedback :)

I have a Dell Inspiron 1520 with Vista Home Premium factory installed and now I need to install Windows 7. Before doing that I want to make sure I can restore my computer exactly to the way it came if anything goes wrong in the process of installing Win 7 or I needed back my original laptop with Vista.

Figured out the best way to create a complete image of my Hard drive.

Capacity is 320GB
4 partitions - System Partition (C), Recovery Partition, some other 2 small partitions.
I have to modify these partitions and sizes when installing Win7. I want to completely image this HDD so I can get these back exactly the way they are now.

What is the best software I can use and what are the best methods? Please give me your opinions and instructions. Thanks.

Answer:Creating full Image of Hard disk System & recovery partitions (Dell)

(1) Download Macrium Reflect (Free)
(2) Create an image with all 4 partitions selected
(3) Make the linux recovery boot CD
(4) Make sure the linux boot CD works and can locate the image you just made and shows the 4 partitions for selection. Exit.

If the linux boot CD fails to work as will happen on some system configurations you can try in place of the linux CD:
(1) Hirens Boot CD Macrium Reflect is part of the mini XP environment
(2) Macrium pe recovery disk. To make this you will need to download the Macrium Reflect V5 trial and be prepared to do a large MS download of WAIK (~1GB). Macrium guides you through the quite straightforward process.

I have been going bonkers looking for some help to do this, then I recalled out that I can call dell to get the restore disk, -  I was told NO you can not get the disks, because Windows XP is no longer supported.
I have Windows XP sp 2, I know it needs updated, but I also know the computer is riddled with virus and malware.  I would rather make the restore disks from the hidden partition and then reformat the computer.
I would like to make the disks, but have no clue as to how.
I then plan to partition the 150gb hard drive so I have Windows XP on one partition and then the other I want to install Ubuntu, I have no clue about Ubuntu - other then I have heard it is open source and a very good program.
P.S why both OS?
I know XP well, and want to learn Ubuntu, I expect I will go back and forth between them as I learn.

Answer:Wanting to create a Hard drive restore disk from hidden files on a dell

I do not know of a way to make recovery CD / DVD media from the recovery partition.
The best recovery method (provided your recovery partition is intact is to perform the following...
Make a Backup of all your important data first.
Disconnect any unneeded peripherals (Printers, Scanners, USB Drives etc.).
Boot your computer, when the Dell logo appears on your screen, hold down <Ctrl> and <F11> simultaneously.
The Dell PC Restore Wizard will load.
Use the <Tab> and <Enter> key or Click to choose Restore.
Read and follow the instructions carefully, use the <Tab> and <Enter> key or Click to respond to prompts.
Finally All Data Will Be Lost displays. use the <Tab> and <Enter> key or Click to choose Confirm.
Press <Enter> to begin the recovery process.
Upon completion you will receive a message hopefully displaying a successful recovery. use the <Tab> and <Enter> key or Click to choose Finish
Press <Enter> to boot to the fresh installation.
I recommend that you consider Linux Mint
Keep BC posted!

Hi, Recently the Tech guy at my work threw out a bunch of computer towers and other computer parts etc..In amongst all of that was a Dell Inspiron Mini 1012 with no battery or AC adapter. So I took it home and plugged in an AC adapter that met the specs. It powered up and says the following: SMART Failure Predicted on Hard Disk 2
Warning: Immediately back-up you data and replace your hard disk drive. A failure may be imminent. Press F1 to continue.I press F1 and it Starts Windows. It then goes to a screen stating Windows Error Recovery. Windows failed to start. A recent hardware or software change might be the cause. Then they give you 2 options. Launch Startup Repair (recommended) or Start Windows Normally. I tried both of these without much luck. During the Startup Repair it says Startup Repair cannot repair this computer automatically. Well I know that the problem is obviously the hard drive is corrupt. I will need to replace the hard drive. I have tried to click F8 a ton of times during boot up and it won't get me to that option. I have tried plugging in an external cd/dvd drive and boot from the cd. It cannot get the mini 1012 to boot up that way. I changed the boot sequence to boot up from cd drive first. I don't understand why the F8 function won't work. Also during the System Recovery option I got it to a screen stating: To access recovery options, log on as a local user. To access the command prompt as well, log on using an administrator account. Usern... Read more

Just bought this model a month ago. At first, I thought there isn't any LED Indicator in this model for charging/ HDD activity modulation but later when I saw the guide, I noticed an indicator just below the touchpad. But, the catch is that it isn't glowing at all. Even while charging, I tried the hotkey combination (Fn + H) to toggle that light but to no avail. Any idea as to how to activate this light?

I want to know how to approach dell to get a copy of windows 8 operating system iso so that I can reinstall the windows on my laptop.
I have following questions regarding same:
1. What is the procedure of obtaining the Windows 8 operating system iso from DELL?
2. If dell can provide the requested, what are the charges for the same?
3. Can the OEM version of the windows 8 be installed to another computer? What I meant is that how many licenses does I get with OEM version or how many times I can reinstall the operating system during the life cycle of the product(Windows 8) using the same key?
4. If the license key is embedded in the hardware then can I use any windows 8 installer iso to reinstall the OS?

Answer:How to get the WIndows 8 installation disk/recovery disk from dell?

Hi Nitin,
The Windows product key is pre-installed in Dell systems. However may I know the reason why you are looking out for a disc?
If the computer is not booting up and if you want to request for a disc then you may use the below link:  (For U.S only)
If the system is working normally, you may create a system restore disc by following the below steps in Windows 8:
(1) Move to mouse pointer to the top right corner and click on the search button.
(2) Select applications, type Dell backup and recovery and select search.
(3) On the left side you may click on the application.
(4) Once the application opens select recovery disc and create rescue disc.
OEM discs (Win8) can be installed on any Dell computers (if Windows 8 is pre-installed in that computer from factory).
It is suggested to use OEM image for re-installation purpose.

I had a custom PC built, and a Dell Re-installation Disk was used initially
to Install Windows. The System worked about 30 days, and started getting BSOD's.

After a Clean Re-Install of Windows Pro 64 bit on a New Hard Drive,
Windows updates will not complete, and seems to be in a loop of Failure:
Reverting Configuration Changes. Sometimes the system gets to the
Desk top, but soon as an action is attempted [like installing IE-11] it throws
BSOD's. There are NO Dell components in the system build. Could the Dell
Re-installation Disk be causing the problem, even though the Disk was
Validated as Genuine Windows? I questioned the builder as to why he used that
particular Dell Re-installation Disk, and he denies purchasing & installing it.
That's another issue, but I want to know if the Dell disk is giving me the headaches?
Most components are ASUS.

My dell inspiron 14z 5423 no longer have sound from both the speakers and the earphone jack.
This happened after I replaced the Battery and also the hard disk from 500gb to 1TB and upgraded to windows 10.

Also, my speaker symbol on the task bar shows a "cross" sign with "no audio output installed" displaying when I hover on the speaker icon.
Please I need help. have tried all options i can think of including driver updates.
One more thing, the sound driver are not showing up on the device manager window where other drivers are displayed.

Hello. Download this Win8.1 IDT audio driver for the Inspiron 14z 5423. There are two versions there -- get the one that says "File Format Hard Drive". Follow the installation instructions and see if the driver shows up in Device Manager.
If it doesn't, perform the PSA or ePSA sound test. If no sound during the test then there has been hardware failure. Could have happened during parts replacement.

I have a new Dell XPS9530 which has a software application that was installed by default called "True Color" which is normally in the task bar near the clock.
I ordered the official Dell OEM Windows 8.1 disk (red in color) and the XPS 9530 Driver CD (Gray in Color) and did a fresh install on my computer.  Neither disk contains the previously installed True Color application and I also don't see it on the downloads section on the Dell website.

Hi Everyone,
I'm looking for some help regarding this Dell XPS 630i desktop I purchased recently. I'll list the specs below followed by my problem I hope someone can help me with.
Motherboard: Dell XPS 630i Socket 775 NVidia NForce 650 SLI Processor: Intel Core 2 Extreme CPU Q6850 3.0 GHzVideo Card: NVidia GeForce 9800 GX2Memory: 4GBOS: Windows 8.1 64 bit
Ok so I got this computer from a garage sale. Brought it home it had Vista installed (the original OS which came with the computer) but I needed to upgrade it to Win 8.1 in order to run certain software. Before upgrading everything was working fine. The video card has 2 DVI outputs and an HDMI output, which i plugged 2 monitors into and it worked just fine. So anyway I needed to format and install Win 8.1 so I did. Now in the device manager there's conflict with the video card (NVidia GeForce 9800 GX2). As if drivers are missing. So because of the conflict I cannot get full screen on my monitor and it won't output to dual monitors only one of the DVI outputs is working and the HDMI output doesn't work either. So I downloaded drivers from NVidia's website for this particular video card (the win 8.1 64 bit version). But still the problem persists. I've spent a few days on researching, installing different OS like Win 8.1 32 bit, Win 7 32 and 64 bit etc. Downloading the motherboard drivers, updating bios, video card drivers but I can't get it to work properly. I'm obviou... Read more

Welcome to SF ccwtech .

Usually I would like to have more than one dump file so manually check the minidump folder.

If dump files are present in that folder copy them to the Desktop, zip and upload in your next post.

As for the dump files uploaded;
The bug check is 0x9F which is DRIVER POWER STATE FAILURE that happens in
transitions between power states most commonly S0 (ON state) > S3 (Sleep state)
or vice-versa. You can read more HERE.

The most common cause is a device driver but sometimes it's the hardware itself
that is at fault.

A driver has failed to complete a power IRP within a specific time (usually 10 minutes).

Hi all,
I'm interested in your strategies for getting updates for your Dell laptops.
When I got my XPS 15, I subscribed to the Technical Updates service, to receive emails about updates.
That was before I realised my laptop came with the Dell Update application, which advises me of updates via notifications.
I was a bit uncomfortable having two sources of updates. Am I wasting bandwidth downloading the same update twice? Am I overwriting a newer update from one source with an older update from the other source? etc
And I've recently had the SupportAssist 'plugin' installed. Lo and behold, it's Drivers and Downloads section is also suggesting updates.
Do I need all three of these?
I'm tempted to unsubscribe from the emails, uninstall SupportAssist, and just rely on Dell Update. Am I going to miss any important updates if I do this?
Thanks for your help.

Answer:Do you use Dell Technical Updates subscription and/or Dell Update and/or Dell SupportAssist?

Bryan Houliston,If you have already did the updates there is no need to keep doing them over and over. Personally,  I only use the Dell Updates and I choose which updates I want to install manually. If you choose to uninstall Support Assist from the installed programs in control panel. It is fine. Also, you can check back on the link below every so often to see if there are any updates you need or want to install in your computer.Dell Drivers, Downloads and Manuals

Because of software problems, I made an image of Windows 7 as I had it, cleaned the hard disk with DBAN (Darik's Boot and Nuke), and reinstalled the software on my Lenovo laptop from the Windows 7 disk. This has worked OK, but my Dell Latitude won't boot from the Windows 7 disk. Please tell me how I can get this laptop to boot.

Answer:Dell Latitude won't load Windows 7 from disk

Too many unknowns here for me to help much.

What did you create the image with, and what partitions did you backup/restore ?
Macrium, Acronis, AOMEI, Windows built-in backup program, etc. ?

Your specs show Win 7 Enterprise.
Is this a business PC, and is there an IT support staff that can help ?

and reinstalled the software on my Lenovo laptop from the Windows 7 disk. This has worked OK, but my Dell Latitude won't boot from the Windows 7 disk.

How did you reinstall software from the Windows 7 disk if the Windows 7 disk won't boot ?

I'm a home user with PC's using Legacy MBR installs (not UEFI).
When i mess with things and a PC won't boot, a Startup Repair fixes the problem.

I need to put Windows 7 on a new internal hard drive that's in my Samsung laptop. I found someone who has a Windows 7 disk for sale, unopened, along with the drivers disk, but it says Dell on it. Would it work on my Samsung laptop, even though it's not a Samsung hard drive, or would it only be made to work on a Dell computer?

I recently installed a distro of Linux on my dell Inspiron, after deciding it wasn't for me I wanted to get use the windows 7 boot loader and remove Linux. No problem, I thought, I'll just boot up the windows 7 system disk, use the repair option to overwrite GRUB and delete the Linux partitions.

Problem is my dell laptop doesn't appear to have come with an install disk for windows 7. It does, however, come with a disk called 'application', 'drivers and utilities', 'resource media' and 'roxio creator strater'. There isn't a possibilty that my OS is hiding one of these is there?

Answer:Windows 7 System Disk for a Dell Inspiron

Hello OffAndOnAgain and welcome to TSF,

If you didn't remove the hidden recovery partition, you can restore your PC using that. Depending on what Dell machine you have, you can either restore with backup discs or with a built in startup command. Use one of the methods below:

1. Download/Buy a recovery disc here.
2. Press CTRL + F11 during bootup, choose to restore the system.

We just recently purchased a new computer but am struggling to get our printer installed.  My printer works on my desktop ( I work from home so yes I have a desktop).  The printer also works with our other laptop via USB. Something happened sometime back that disrupted our Wi-Fi connection so I just never got it back up and running.   Anyway, we have this brand new laptop. I have been on the Support website and downloaded the drivers. save the files to the computer , unzipped them and executed the setup. The printer shows on my computer but it still says the drivers are missing.  It doesn't work hooking it up to the USB port etc....

I am ready to send my new computer frustrated.   Any help would be greatly appreciated.

I have recently upgraded to windows 10 and everything seems file except one problem I am facing which is the wifi card connectivity issues. My connection to router drops very frequently, curently the generic driver which windows think is appropriate is installed. I wanted to undate that with Dell's driver which I can't find on driver download section. 64 bit WiFi driver is NOT there. 32 Bit driver is but that won't install on my machine.
Can someone from Dell help? either to give me the link for correct driver download or confirm driver is not available in which case I would need to downgrade to windwos 8 as the system is unusable in its current state.

Answer:Dell Inspiron 15R 7520 SE - Windows 10 64 Bit WiFi Driver not available on Dell Site

On the Drivers & Download pages for the Inspiron 15R 7520 there are only 64-bit options for Windows, whether 8.0,8.1, or 10.   So those drivers are the ones for the 64-bit version of Windows 10, as long as you filter the operating system option to Windows 10 64-bit.
The file name may state "Win32" but if you click on the "View Details" link, and then check "Supported Operating Systems" near the bottom of the page you'll find that the driver supports both 32-bit and 64-bit versions.
You don't mention which wireless card you have in that system so I can't link directly to the specific driver.  Which card do you have and what error are you getting when trying to install the drvier?
I would also recommend updating the firmware on your router.  Many routers need an update to be able to handle Windows 10 specific drivers and cards reliably.   What router brand and model are you connecting to?  And do you have problems with all routers or just this one.
Lastly, here is a link to the Dell Networking & Wireless Support Center.  You will find a few support articles in there that may be of help to you.
Let me know which card you have and when the last time you updated your router and, if you can't get the connection to work, I'll see what else I can suggest to help you.

The precision 5520 is available with two wireless cards, the dell wireless 1820 (when configured with ubuntu) and the Intel WiFi Link 8265 (when configured with windows 10).  I have the 1820 and ubuntu, but I also want to use windows 10.  When I installed windows 10, the card worked fine.  However, when I installed the anniversary update, the card stopped working.  In the device manager, it said that the device cannot start (code 10).  On the dell website, there are only drivers listed for the Intel WiFi Link 8265 card, and none for the 1820, so I couldn't install any drivers.
Does anyone know how to make the 1820 card work under windows 10 anniversary?

I found this list on the Dell site that tells you whether they have tested a particular model for its ability to be upgraded to Windows 10.   The Dell Vostro 3550 is not on the list of about 20 Vostro models, some with lower model numbers ,  some higher.   Will they ever test it??
If you try to upgrade,  windows 10 copies files and then in the 2nd of the three major sections of the upgrade (where you have that big circle in the middle of the screen)  it just goes to a blank screen and then all disk activity ceases and it becomes well hung.   Of course now, the machine thinks its os is win 10 and you cannot go back to a win 7 recover point .  So you just lose all your data and apps and restore the factory image and then install 208 windows 7 updates and it takes like 8 hours in all.
Sounds like a similar problem that people had with Vostros going from win 7 to win 8.   Why not fix it.

Answer:Windows 10 Upgrade - why isnt Dell Vostro 3550 on the list from Dell ?

Well, after spending the better part of whole day trying to figure out why somebody else's Dell Vostro 3550 was not displaying anything after an even longer period of downloading the Windows 10 upgrade (from Windows 7 in this case) it turns out the fix required was to upgrade the BIOS to A11 (end of 2012).

Hopefully this might save someone a wasted day in their lives. Before this I spent some hours before figuring out that the machine was in fact booting - only the display was black. So then it was a matter of figuring out key strokes to use (blind) to shut down and also enable the menu for safe mode. Safe mode worked, and so then more hours trying to work around the issue before finally stumbling onto some stuff online where the BIOS upgrade was mentioned - apparently also an issue with Windows 8?

This laptop had some user profile problems. Now sorted, but no wireless icon and no connection. I have uninstalled the WLAN driver, then downloaded the latest one from Dell. In DevMan, WLAN adaptor shows as working normally. In Network and Sharing Centre, Wireless Network Connection shows as Disabled. I right click and choose Enable - a panel pops up, says enabling then Enabled, but Wireless Network Connection still shows Disabled. Off out for a couple of hours - any thoughts welcome (I'm sure I've had this snag before, but memory isn't what it was!).

Answer:Dell Laptop w/ Windows 8 won't boot past dell logo screen

Hello Univers789,
Re-installing windows is the last resort. So before doing that, you can try the steps mentioned below which might fix the issue. 1. Restart the laptop and start tapping the F2 key at the Dell logo for enter the BIOS. 2. Navigate to the “Advanced” menu. 3. Change the SATA operation/selection in BIOS from Intel Smart Response to AHCI. 4. Press F10 to save changes and exit. 5. Reboot the system. 6. Go back into the BIOS by tapping the F2 key and change the SATA operation/selection in BIOS from AHCI to Intel Smart Response. 7. Save changes and exit by pressing the F10 key. 8. Reboot the system and it should boot normally into Windows. In case the above steps don’t fix the issue, run the Pre-Boot System Assessment (PSA / ePSA) Diagnostics. Run the test and check if gives any error code. Note down the error code and update me with the same, would let you know the next course of action. Please write back with results.

I have just bought a Dell Inspiron 15 7000 15.6" Laptop
...and I want to use my Dell u2412M monitor, to extend the screens for my workspace ( or simply use the bigger monitor screen).
To achieve this I am using an HDMI cable with an HDMI to DVI adaptor to plug the cable into the Dell monitor.
I've tested the cable on my old Sony laptop using HDMI to DVI and it recognises the monitor and works (my other laptop was running Windows 7).
However the new laptop won't recognise or see the monitor at all when I plug in the HDMI cable?
I have checked under "manage my devices" and the graphics card driver seems up to date on the laptop.
Is there something I need to download to make the monitor work please as I assumed it would plug and play.
Many thanks!!!

Hello to all,   I recently did a clean reinstall of Windows XP (Home) on my Dell Dimension 2350. All went fine. Now I need to install the correct drivers. I have the Dell Resource disc and this is where the problem starts.    As noted elsewhere, after the reinstall the screen display of the Resource disc is as it would be in "Safe Mode". I was aware of this. As such, the Resource disc Search Criteria screen was a bit larger than the monitor screen. I was able to size it to fit the screen but this is really not the problem it is the following: The Search Criteria options I have from the drop down menus (on screen) are as follows:System Model:   All, Dimension C521, DXC061, Dimension DXP0G1, Dimension E521, DM061, XPS710    (Which, if any, do I pick?)Operating System: (I think I got this one)   All, Windows XPTopic:   (Maybe this one too)   All, Applications, Dell Diagnostics, Diagnostics, Drivers, Utilities   For the life of me I cannot figure out the exact drivers I am to install*. Windows XP only appears in the Operating System menu. I pretty much know the install order but as I said, I'm a bit confused about selecting the correct drivers from the disc. This computer is not connected to the internet at the moment so I can't download and use any sort of driver detection program. Other searches have confused me further and have provided no specific answer to this problem.&nbs... Read more

Answer:Installing drivers after Windows XP reinstall on Dell Dimension 2350 using Dell Resource disc

You need, in installation order:

Chipset driver
Video driver (depends on which video card)
Audio driver
Network driver (depends on which you have)
Modem driver, if you use a dialup modem

Go to the Support page and put in your Service Tag. It should give you the drivers you need. You can download them on any PC and copy onto a USB stick for installation on the 2350.
You only need the applications, if you actually use them (eg, Roxio, Jasc Paintshop, etc).
Then install your antiviral software and get online to the Microsoft Update site for all the patches and updates.
Keep in mind that XP is no longer supported by Microsoft and they stopped releasing security fixes for XP and IE9, more than 1 year ago. So they're both full of security holes and put your personal data at risk.

I am starting to get concerned about my new Dell Dimension 8400 getting hot, doesn't seem to be much in the way of airflow. The whole Intel processor is all new to me...usually an AMD chick, but I got a good deal. Anyway...would it void my warrantee if I put mobo, dvd, & HDD etc. into a different case with more fans to improve airflow? Has anyone else done this? Just curious.

Intel Pentium IV 3.6GHz
ATI Radeon X850 XT PE PCIe (256 memory)

Answer:Move Dell components into other case?

I don't know if it would void Dell's warranty or not (although I think it well might!), but if you were going to do all that anyway why didn't you assemble your own machine in the first place?

Hi, I can't seem to get anything higher than 1920x1080 in the list of available resolution options when I connect my Dell U2713HM monitor to my Dell Inspiron 15 laptop. I've run this monitor at 2560x1440 on another laptop over HDMI in the past but that was with Windows 8. The Intel HD Graphics 530 Control Panel doesn't offer any resolutions above 1920x1080 for the external monitor and adding custom resolutions results in the error "the custom resolution exceeds the maximum bandwidth capacity". I'm using the same high speed HDMI cable that worked at 2560x1440 with this monitor on my previous laptop. I'm fully up to date on all of the drivers for the laptop.
Does anyone have any suggestions? I'm not sure what else to try. Could this be a Windows 10 issue? Should I try the standard Intel HD Graphics 530 drivers from the Intel website?

Answer:Dell Inspiron 15 7559 connected to Dell U2713HM monitor over HDMI can't do 2560x1440 resolution in Windows 10

Hi JonoBloo,
The hardware on the system supports the 2560x1440. It should be a software issue. I would suggest you to uninstall and reinstall the video card driver from Dell website as these drivers are tested on the Dell system. Please follow the steps mentioned below to uninstall the video card.

Press the Windows key and Start typing devmgmt.msc and then press enter.
Select the Display adapters listed and right click on it.
Now select properties.
In the properties window, under Driver tab, click on Uninstall button.
Check “Delete the driver software for this device.”
You want to delete the driver click OK.

After the uninstall finishes restart the system. Then reinstall the Intel video card driver for issue resolution. Please enter your service tag # on the link below, select the OS, then download the video card drivers from Video section onto the system and install it.
Please let me know if this helps.
