Preferred Solution: CAPS lock turns on and off by itself" issue in Windows 7 64-bit Enterprise Service pack 1 operating system

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Hi Paramaguru,
Open your Task Manager and see whether wscript.exe is running, if yes, end task for that program and see whether the problem still occurring.

Hello.
Recently, specifically 04/29/16, my computer started shutting off by itself. At first, I thought it was a problem with the internal fan. So, I bought some compressed air and used that to remove the dust from my fan. When that didn't work, I thought it was a virus. So, I ran tons of virus scans and still came up with nothing. My computer was virus-free. It wasn't until today that I realized my laptop turned off every time I pressed caps lock. I didn't discover it before because I must've pressed it by accident and not realized. Also, my caps lock button used to light up when activated, but now it doesn't light up at all. I think there might be a short in my hardware, but I'd really like someone elses' opinion before I assume the worst. Thank you!

Hello everyone. I've personally come across two issues that are of major impact in winXP service pack 2.

The first of which is the new DEP (Data Execution Prevention). If you head down to your Control Panel > System > Advanced > Performance tab you'll see it - basically it blocks certain code from executing which is supposed to stop the spread of worms and the like. You do NOT have the choice of disabling it from this screen, which I don't like. Here's why...

If you have any shell integrated program not approved (DivX 5.2/Dr DivX come to mind!) you will experience a crash whenever the computer tries to load a preview using the coded, when you right click on any file or icon to open the context menu, and finally if you try to delete anything utilizing the delete key. In my case the crash came in the form of a long hang, followed by the "Dr Watson" NT debugging tool crashing and trying to report to MS. I Had to go to taskman and close all the Drwatson processes or the system would continue to be unusuable. Suffice it to say its a pain in the ass not being able to right click on any file....

I found a solution to this irritating problem, however. Open up your boot.ini (this can be V ERY difficult to do when you can't use any right click menus, try doing it from within winamp's open file dialogue. That usually gets around the error) and modify the " /noexecute=OptIn " to "/noexecute=AlwaysOff&q... Read more

Answer:Service Pack 2 - the "right click crash" issue fix.

Arcording to this http://www.numlock.ch/news/archives/000280.html the MS implementattion of DEP also gives a large hit on performance...

Hey guys,

Most topics I have found deal with WinXP's SP2 on stand alone machines.
What issues are you seeing for the enterprise? I'm a netadmin for a 200+ business, all WinXP and Win2000 servers.

Obviously, the firewall left turned on is an issue, but I have found turning it off causes the nag screen to pop up constantly. Ditto for turning off auto-update. Is there registry tweaks for stopping the nag?

I'm aware of some Dell's being downgraded to a super slow processor speed, as well as a few issues with some 3rd party programs. I've researched MS's list of known problems with xpsp2 too.

What other things concern you/do you like?

Answer:WinXP Service Pack 2 in the Enterprise

if you already have a firewall and antivirus, and push monthly updates anyway, whats the use? stick to SP1

I have an x61t that when it locks for screen saver password and you have to CTRL ALT Delete the relog back on. the CAPS lock on the onscreen keyboard indicates on but it's not. 1. Log into the tablet.2. The screensaver would lock the tablet.3. Press Ctrl Alt Delete to get to the logon screen.4. The on screen keyboard would show the Caps Lock key as on but it wasn't. If they pressed the Caps Lock key it would then be on.5. The users don't press the Caps Lock key now, even though it is being displayed as on, and they can logon OK. I cannot recreate this problem on another X61tablet and this behaviour happens even when the notebook is in a docking station with an external keyboard.  anybody seen this error before?

Let me recap, first of all, all of the occurances that may be relevant towards the current issue with my computer.

Actually, let me just start off by saying that I'm running a Gateway desktop that's at least 8 years old - probably more. There's a sticker on my computer which states, "designed for Windows 95." So, an old computer.

Anyway, a few weeks or months ago, my computer began making odd clicking noises. It only seemed to happen when I left my computer on for greater than 24 hours at a time (I live in a dorm.) I think maybe the first time I noticed these noises, a portion of the hard drive in question was damaged or erased. I recovered the files and began turning my computer off every night, and I haven't noticed the noises since.

Also, it should be noted that my computer has two hard drives, one which is about 20GB, that contains all my windows and program files, and another, which is about 40GB, that holds all my miscellaneous media files. The latter is the one which was damaged.

Getting to the point, I turned on my computer a few days ago to find a message indicating that "no operating system was found." I opened it up, just to make sure all the cables were connected, and they seemed to be. Now I'm noticing that Widnows XP only boots up when my media hd isn't connected. When it is connected, Bios does seem to recognize it, but only it, and no other drive. Such would probably be the reason why "no operating sys... Read more

Hi,
It all started with a strange error message in XP (SP3) without having done anything in the SW. I rebooted and it said a file was missing or corrupt = cannot boot, keep rebooting.
I checked the RAM, tested it: no problem.
I removed the drive, checked carefully with a diagnostic tool (from Hitachi) and no errors at all. I was able to copy the whole drive for backup, no issue.
I reloaded the BIOS, plugged the HDD into the laptop after I formatted it. 'F2' to access the BIOS, the HDD is detected.
But "Operating System Not Found" appears during the boot.
<HINT> after this message, if I remove the drive and insert it again, no more "Operating System Not Found" the next time I boot.

I installed a fresh XP SP3 on the freshly formatted HDD, I can use all the functions but get several BSOD at times, related to pagemgr.sys or ftdisk.sys or others.
rebooting = "Operating System Not Found". Remove/reinsert the HDD and I can boot and use XP for a while until the next BSOD and "Operating System not found" during reboot. A checkdisk before XP is loaded will always show some errors, deleting, replacing orphans...

However I came to the conclusion that it is not HDD related (btw, it's only 8 months old HDD), but more likely linked to the board. Maybe I'm wrong, but I tried so many things...in vain.

Hi Blackyblack,

Is it possible that you are either downloading bad software or visiting bad web sites that could be infecting your HDD and causing the C: drive to make your O/S invisible?

Recommend you download/install/run Malwarebytes from my Signature.
Be sure to run the Update function before each use.

At the end of Malwarebytes run, it will produce a report.

Answer:keyboard shuts down computer after pressing "Caps Lock"

The keyboard itself could have physical damage or just failed, I'd start by trying an external keyboard and if all is well then I'd remove the internal keyboard and inspect for liquids or a damaged cable. Laptop keyboards are generally pretty cheap and easy to replace.

Caps lock and Num lock reversed

On my new Gateway ML6720, the caps lock and num lock are OFF, but my caps lock and num lock lights are on. And vice versa. I don't remember it being that way this morning when I first turned it on.

Why are the lights reversed from what I expected?

Thanks.

Question: Caps Lock issue

Hi everyone,
I am running win7 pro SP1. I connect to a win7 remote desktop server via RDP successfully. All works fine with all my computers but one that has a caps lock issue : I can turn keys to uppercase pressing caps lock but I can not turn them back to lowercase.
Actually, this issue seems to be related to a local specific profile since I face no problem when I open a session with another local profile. I checked much of the HKCU keys related to keyboard, keyboard layout, input method and so on but I found no solution
to that problem. I might have missed something for sure. Does someone have an idea on how to fix that issue ?
Thank you for your help.

Eric.

Answer:Caps Lock issue

For the record, I fixed this issue. Actually, the caps lock behavior on the local and remote computers were different :
local : caps lock goes to uppercase, shift goes back to lowercase
remote : caps lock toggle from uppercase to lowercase.
Modifying the local behavior to the remote one fixed the situation.

Case closed.

Hello!

I recently purchased a 128gb Crucial M4 SSD.

The other day my father and I sat down together to work on setting up the SSD as my OS drive. We installed Windows 7 64bit Home Premium successfully on the drive. There were no issues until I started to install drivers liberally rather then conservatively.

While installing ~101 Window's Updates, I impatiently started installing my XFX Radeon 6870 drivers. This caused a crash and a blue screen to appear. After rebooting the system in Safe Mode, everything appeared fine. However, my video card drivers were in a weird funk. After some research, I resolved the issue and my video card drivers were all working and installed successfully.

The big problem now is that when trying to Install Service Pack 1, I get an error code upon reboot that says "D_S_S_SUCCESS(0x0)". During the installation of Service Pack 1, the install stops about half-way and wants me to reboot the system, so I do. Rebooting the system is when I get the error code. The screen that pops up says that the install was unsuccessful.

I've looked around on Microsoft's website to find some help. So far I've performed the following tasks:

Downloaded a tool by Microsoft called Mrfixit.
I've ran troubleshooting that attempts to fix windows update.
I've ran disk cleanup to delete temporary files, which won't even delete everything...
I've uninstalled any virus software
System Update Readiness Tool
I've tried renaming the systems distribut... Read more

Answer:Installing Windows 7 64bit Service Pack 1, Error "D_S_S_SUCCESS(0x0)"

Please post your CheckSUR.log file, and a copy ofyour CBS.log file.
Since you are still at an early stage, it may be quicker and easier to simply reinstall - it would probably be less damaging than repeated attempts to install SP1

This time, I would recommend updating Windows first, in batches (do the Security updates first, and leave all .NET updates until last - do not install the Recommended updates until all Important ones are in)Once Windows is up to date, install an AV, and any needed drivers (from the manufacturer's site).

I am trying to install Windows XP pro SP3 on my Panasonic CF-U1, using an external USB DVD drive, and it seems to install properly up until the first install screen at the "installing windows" stage. I seem to keep getting the error "The file "asms"on Windows XP Professional Service Pack 3 CD is needed." I've tried to type in the direct path to the file (D:\i386) but that does not seem to work. I've also tried to open regedit in command prompt, but that doesn't work either. I am very confused, if anyone has any answers I'd love to hear thanks.

Two days ago my hard-drive went kaput for one reason and other. As I tried starting it, I did so by safe mode and it froze at mup.sys; Then, scouring the internet, I came across the idea to repair windows and when doing so encountered

Reading that, I attempted to delete the aforementioned items. None of them seemed to be there. Now I'm presented with the misfortune of needing to trouble the knowledgeable and helpful people of techguy for assistance.

Hi everybody,

I've upgraded my ASUS U36SG from Windows 8.1 Professional to Windows 10 Enterprise.
Everything went fine unless the issue "no audio output devices are installed",

I've tried almost all the solutions you guys provided for that problem in other similar threads without any success.
Consider that now, in my Device Manager I can see this (OS is in italian):

Both Microsoft and Realtek HD Audio Driver up to date to their last version.
But, no audio (or microphone) device:

I also write to ASUS and they first suggested me to install a legacy version of the Realtek Audio Driver (v 6..0.1.7503) then to rollback to Windows 7 Pro (I'm not joking...)

Any idea to help my laptop to have its sounds back?

I recommend anyone thinking of upgrading to SP2 to read this first

The Dark Side of Windows XP Service Pack 2

http://www.windowsnetworking.com/art...l?printversion

heres a snatch of the article!

Quote:

The Prep Work
Before you even think about upgrading a machine to Service Pack 2, it?s a good idea to take a few minutes and properly prepare the machine. Yes, you can technically install SP2 without doing anything special to the machine ahead of time, but you are far less likely to experience problems if you plan ahead.

Spyware Removal
The very first thing that you should do is to scan your machine for spyware and remove any that you might find. The reason why this is so important is because spyware typically latches itself onto the registry and onto various system files. Installing Service Pack 2 replaces most of your machine?s system files. If a spyware module has altered aspects of your system and then you start replacing system files, there is a good chance that Windows will lose network and Internet connectivity. If this does happen to you, you can fix the problem by downloading and running a utility called WinsockXPFix.exe. You can download this utility from

http://www.iup.edu/house/resnet/winfix.shtm

Even though this utility will usually fix the problem, it is better to just scan the machine prior to installing the service pack and avoid the problem completely.

Hi, its me again. Few days ago i bought Lenovo x100e NetbookProduct ID: 35086AGAthlon MV40(1.6GHz), 1GB RAM, 160GB 5400rpm HD, 11.6in 1366x768 LCD, ATI Radeon HD2200, 802.11bgn wireless, WWAN upgradeable, Bluetooth, 1Gb Ethernet, UltraNav, 3c Li-Ion, WinXP Professional  (iNSTALLED AFTER SHOPPING) Win XP PRO SP3  Updated to date, All latest drivers. After pressing Caps lock, the OSD indicator for caps lock just stay turned on till next time i start windows. Another question. As you can see up there, my x100e comes with 1GB RAM memory. Adn when i click to start ->settings->control panel->system, under computer section it says "768 MB of RAM".Is it possible that guys in shop just replaced 1 GB factory RAM with this 768?Cause as far as i know...1GB of RAM is equivalent to 1024 MB of RAM.

Answer:X100e Caps Lock OSD issue

I've had my X100e for several months and about 2 weeks ago I also have the 'permanent' Caps Lock indicator displayed after the first time I hit the key and it doesn't display the correct status and won't go away.I discovered a hack to fix it but it's just a nuisance (and has to be done for each user if you have more than one user defined).  I am running Windows 7. Open the Task Manager and delete the TPNUMLKD.exe process. If CAPS LOCK is displayed it will go away.  Then open Windows Explorer and go to the "Program Files"/Lenovo/HOTKEY directory and click on pNumLkD.exe and now the indicator for the current user will work as intended.  It displays the correct Caps Lock state and when Caps Lock is off the indicator disappears after a couple of seconds. I hope this works for you, but would like to see a 'real fix'! Jack

Generally speaking, you don't try to update the O/S until AFTER the HD is virus-free. If you don't have an AV, download Grisoft's AVG free edition, install, update the AV and then check the HD(s).

I downloaded the software "Easy Duplicate Finder" to find duplicates on my C Drive and scanned.

To my big surprise I found: original files: 1080 and DUPLICATE files 3170!!

The vast majority was under Systems Restore.

I previously had Windows Service Pack 1, added Service Pack 2 and ultimately Service Pack 3.

The restore information has become lately VERY BLOATED! I noticed this already soon after I installed Service Pack 3 when doing scans on other software programs!

My questions are:

When Windows "restores", does it create every time a restore point of EACH of the Service Packs 2 and 3 and I therefore get so many duplicates?

Can any of these highlighted items be deleted or should I leave them the way they are?

Thank you!

Answer:"Restore" Windows Service Pack 1, 2 and 3? Bloated!

If you are sure your system is stable....you can remove all system restore points by simply turning it off and rebooting...then turning it back on. Right click my computer / properties / system restore..uncheck enable system restore...reboot and do the reverse.

My GF has an issue with Caps Lock reversal and malfunction of both Enter keys after her cat jumped onto her keyboard. The system was running Win 7 Home Premium and Second Life through the Firestorm viewer at the time this started happening. What can I have her do that might remedy this situation?

Answer:My GF has a CAPS LOCK issue after cat jumps on keyboard.

Is it not working or works for half of the times ?
If so, carefully open the Keyboard ( if it is an external Keyboard) and try to clean and diagnose the problem, It should not be a serious problem.
But if it is a laptop I recommend not to open it if you had not do this before .

When my wife tries to log in to her computer, it gives her a message stating that her caps lock key is on, but she can't turn it off...I'm nowhere near the laptop so I'm relaying this info second hand. There is a triangle with an exclamation mark and it says "Caps lock is on." She says when she clicks the message, it tells her to access the on-screen keyboard, but using the mouse to turn of caps lock there doesn't work either.

She also just informed me that the caps lock key is on for everything...firefox, word, notepad etc, so I assume it's a keyboard issue, not a log in issue. When she presses shift, it goes to lower case. I had her go to control panel, region and language, keyboards and languages, hit the change languages button to open text services, opened the advanced key settings, and the "press the CAPS LOCK key" choice was in fact selected, so I don't know what to try next. Maybe to enter safe mode to see if the problem exists there too? But I don't know how to get into safe mode on her computer, and neither does she, apparently. F2 seems to be the bios from her description and F12 seems to be the boot menu, but no safe mode selections...only drive choices. Her laptop is an Acer Aspire 5534...that's all I know...for now.

Edit: She entered into safe mode and the caps lock is still on. Keyboard issue?

Answer:Solved: Caps Lock Issue...might be the keyboard.

a while back i tried installing windows xp sp2 on my 4 year old dell tower running windows xp pro. i had many issues and simply chose to uninstall.

now i got an ipod touch - i NEED sp2. so i tried installing again, same computer. while itunes and my ipod touch work, i have one major problem: windows explorer does not. again, not IE, but the windows explorer function of opening a folder: does not work.

when i double click, nothing happens for 20-30seconds, then i get an error that the dr. watson (drwtns32.exe) has encountered an error. i then force shut down dr. watson via the task manager, the desktop icons disappear, and 10 seconds later all is back to normal. but i still can't open folders.

any ideas out there? i'd love to work through this with someone. much thanks,

Not a techie.  Can't get straight answer ANYWHERE.  New laptops tend to NOT have indicators on the keys.  Hoping Windows 10 has indicators that can be turned on and PROBABLY would show up in the tray at the bottom right of the screen.
I have heard of sites where such things can be downloaded but again NOT a techie, so I hesitate to go outside of Windows/Microsoft for downloads.  I do not know what download sites are safe or spoofs.

Please plain English ... i.e. go to settings etc.  Or just give me a Microsoft approved site for download.

I posted this previously But Need help NOW! (Cannot find previous posting on forum)

my wife clicked on "want to install updates" Now she has "software update wizard updating your system" "Please wait while setup inspects your current configuration, archives your current files and updates your files" "Finishing Installation" "Details: Performing cleanup" box on the screen. I cannot click on Back, Finish or Cancel (will not highlight). I think this is a service pack 3 upgrade. She has had this box for 36 - 40 hours. What Can we do??

14 more hours have passed no change still cannot get back, finish or cancel tabs to work. We have High speed internet through our cable provider. What are our options...Ctrl-Alt-delete...Crash???

Answer:Lock UP Service Pack 3 Help

I agree with MarkTrent, if it has been trying to update to SP3 for 40+ hours. You may try disconnecting your internet line to the computer first and see if the SP3 installer will stop then.

Hi all,

Installed a DVDRW drive but comp crashed when installing some software and it stopped detecting my Primary Master and Slave drives. I've fiddled about with the Master and Slave configs and have managed to get it to detect my HD and DVDROM.

I've unplugged my DVDRW and my small HDD and am trying to get windows to load up.

After using FDISK /MBR an rebooting, I get "Missing Operating System".

Tried installing Windows XP after formatting, it seems to have installed but it's not loading.

Current config:

Slave: Pioneer DVDROM (not the DVDRW)
Master: Seagate 80GB (C: = 15GB) & (D: = 61GB).

D: has files on there that I'd like to recover. Too big to put on floppy.

I've run a search for similar problems and tried some of the solutions but no good. Any ideas? Thanks

I have an old HP Pavilion 8260 that I got for free which is having some odd issues. Any time I try to boot, I get one of these 2 errors (first it was always Operating System Not Found, now it's Missing Operating System).

Here are the steps I've tried so far: I tried to boot from a floppy with a disk I know works; tried to boot off of the CD Rom; Tried disconencting everything except Floppy, CPU, and RAM; Tried resetting the BIOS by selecting "Set to Default" and by pulling out the CMOS battery (it was after doing this that it switched to the Missing OS error message).

The hard drive is dectected in the BIOS, as is the CD Rom and floppy drive. It properly recognizes the amount of RAM.

I am fresh out of ideas, even though I'm generally pretty good at this. If anyone else has any advice, it's greatly appreciated.

Hi reichone, welcome to TSF..

i'm not 100% sure if this relates to the update which has failed for you, but I am aware that fairly recently a .net update was failing for many people and the suggested workaround was to uninstall all versions of .net then reinstall in order.

As for the blue screens, please attach your minidump files so we can have a look for you and advise on a possible fix. Your minidump files are located in C:\Windows\minidump

How do I remove the Caps and Num Lock indictor for a Lenovo G50, that is running Windows 10?

Answer:Remove Caps lock/Num lock indicator? (Windows 10)

Hi Thisismyname01 ,

Welcome to the Community Forums.

On a similar G50 , this was resolved by uninstalling Energy Management .

Another steps that was advised :

1. Opening Control Panel >Program and Features>Uninstall a Program and look for Caps OSD or Lenovo OSD

2. On the display properties of the graphic card , you may also configure to "Show indicator for a few seconds" .

3. Disable hotkeys from the BIOS ( but this may change all other usable hotkeys ) . Lets's reserve it a last option.

Update us what works for you.

Now this problem is a real head scratcher for me, and I doubt anyone can help, but I was wondering if anyone has come across this.

I am running an IBM Thinkpad R40. ON occasion, the caps lock button will act as if it is on, when it will in reality be off. There is a light up on the monitor that shows when it is on and off, and the light will show "on", but it will be acting as if the caps lock button is "off". This makes it impossible to type in web addresses. because I cannot type up a period, only an ">".

Two other problems I started having. In Eudora, I will press the send button as I hold down the shift key, and an option window will pop up that will allow me to send the e-mail at a later date. But lately, I have just been pressing the "download mail" button, and the option window pops up as if I am already holding down the shift key, but I am not.

Last problem. I will try to highlight and copy, and there are times when I cannot seem to control the touchpad. I will highlight something, then will try to reverse it, take away the highlighting by pressing on the "mouse" button(I am not using a mouse, I don't know what you call it on a Thinkpad), and it will not reverse, it will not disappear like it should. In fact, it will not leave at all. In order to get rid of the highlighting, I will just have to click entirely out of the window.

I have contacted IBM, they tried getting back to me once, but were unsuccessful.... Read more

I seem to have lost system restore on windows. I have had tech help from Dell but they couldnt get it up and running again. Is there any way of remedying this problem without re installing windows?

Answer:System Restore Windows Xp Service Pack 2

Hello Karmen, Welcome to TSF!

Please try this workaround (you will need your Windows? XP SP2 CD).

(In the event that you do not have a Windows? XP CD with SP2, you will need to 'borrow' one from a friend or colleague, as the manufacturer's "Recovery Discs" will not work in this instance.)

Insert the Windows? XP CD in your drive. (Hold down the Shift Key to prevent it from starting.)

Go Start > Run ...in the box type in sfc /scannow ?please take note of the space between the sfc and the /.

This is the System File Checker...it will scan all the Windows? core system files to ensure that they are in their respective correct places, and if not replace them from the CD.

During the scan you may be asked to Insert the CD, if this happens just go retry and let it do its thing.

One important point: While sfc is running, it is not advisable to do any other work, or have any browsers/programs running on the computer, until the scan is complete. (This process will generally take around 45-65 minutes to complete).

Once finished, remove the CD and reboot your machine...all should be "Normal" (hopefully).

Please post back with the result, or if there are any further queries/concerns.

Kind Regards,

Just bought new never used factory fresh PC Acer AXC-605-UR29
Windows 7 Service Pack 1 manufacrtured this year,
I checked for latest updates and sure enough Service Pack 1 shows up in updates

Windows 7 Service Pack 1 for x64-based Systems (KB976932)

Download size: 9.1 MB

You may need to restart your computer for this update to take effect.

Update type: Important

Windows 7 Service Pack 1 is a recommended collection of updates and improvements to Windows that are combined into a single installable update. The service pack can help make your computer safer and more reliable. A typical installation will take about 30 minutes to complete, and you will have to restart your computer about halfway through the process.

This is a brand new PC that was loaded with factory Windows 7 SP1 so what is going on here?
Can I simply ignore the update? My only concern is that somehow MS updates will is considering
Windows 7 outdated and that I will receive no more updates since the Service Pack 1 is showing up
in the update section. How the heck is the possible with a factory image. One other thing that might help is that before I could check for any new updates Windows said I required a update to windows update. I
Did this update before finding the lastest updates. Also many updates are post cut off date for Windows 7 SP 0 so it did show updates until December 2014, I guess I will find out it Windows will continue to supply new updates this coming Tuesday...

Hi everyone,

Not sure if this thread should be here or in the Intenet / Network area but here goes.
Been using Microsoft Broadband Network Utility MN 500 on my system close to a year now & the network adapter on my laptop and everything was running beautifully.

However since I've installed service pack 2 on both computers, my laptop only stays online for about 5 - 10 minutes and loses connection with the network.

I've uninstalled & reinstalled Microsoft Broadband Network Utility, I've also tried the wireless network wizard service pack 2 offers but still the same results 5 - 10 minutes & lose connection

I know there is compatiblity issues between Microsoft Broadband Network Utility & Service Pack 2 but has anyone heard of any fixes out there ?

I don't want to have to unistall service pack 2, I'm hoping someone knows of some sort of patch ?

Thanks in advance for your help !!

Answer:Windows XP Service Pack 2 Compatibility Issue with MS Broadband Network Utility

Look for a patch for MBNU and SP2 If you cannot find one go here http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?kbid=884130&product=windowsxpsp2 This is a list of programs that conflict with SP2
You can also go here http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=fh;ln;xpsp2getinstall Read over carefully . If you cannot find the trouble you may try uninstalling SP2 at add/remove then reinstalling , following these directions to the letter . Uninstalling should bring your computer back to where it was before you installed SP2

Hi, I'm just posting to see if anyone can help, as another forum didn't reply to my post.
I suffered a blue screen on my windows 7 machine after trying to adjust the screen resoluton back to fit the pc monitor, after successfully using a tv as a monitor via hdmi cable. After the blue screen occured, the pc shut itself down, and tried to restart, but stayed in restart mode (black screen). I eventually tried to restore to earlier point, but this was unsuccessful, however windows loaded (with problems such as crashing, BEX64 error, and Iexplorer file probs).
My problem is that I never captured the error code related to the blue screen, and I also do not have any 'dumps' from 2016 (although there are dumps from other years) which could help find the cause of the bluescreen. So I am just wondering if anyone can help due to me not having any info? If not, will a factory restore be the best option?
Thanks in advance,
Boop

I downloaded the "unofficial" service pack from this site for Windows 98 SE and when I installed and rebooted, my machine booted into safe mode promping me to re-install windows. After cancelling that I rebooted and the same thing happened. I rebooted again and it tried to restore my registry and it still when to the setup screen. I wen through the first 3 dialog boxes and I started getting blue screen Virtual Device (VxD) errors.

I had to put my 98 SE cd in and reinstall. After that, although my apps continued to work, they were absent from the Add\Remove applet in the Control Panel. I had to reinstall all apps to fix this.

I strongly advise against installing this "unofficial" Service Pack.

Answer:Unofficial service Pack Windows 98 SE crashed my system

There isn't a Service Pack for Win9x. The unofficial one is just a roll-up of all the existing patches released by MS so you don't have to download and install 400 patches one by one.

Answer:System Keeps Rebooting after Installing Windows Service Pack 3

This problem only happens if you install an outdated version of pre-release SP3.  That latest version of SP3 RC2 Refresh (build 5508) does not have this problem.  Nor will the final version next week (build 5512).

Hi, Windows Sevenforums

I am having a problem installing the Service Pack 1, SP1, for my Windows 7 Ultimate system. I need to install the SP1 so that I can go to the next step and upgrade to Windows 10.

I found this ?old? posting: http://www.sevenforums.com/windows-updates-activation/324632-windows-7-service-pack-1-x64-based-systems-kb976932-failed.html that talked about the same problem. Here are the details of my current problem and what I have done. Please excuse the details, but hopefully the details will lead to a solution.
My system is a Dell Vostro 1510 laptop running Windows 7 Ultimate. I verified my copy of Win 7 Ultimate is Genuine and registered. Product ID is:

The SP1 update is item 5. I select only item 5 and click ?install?. Install proceeds -- to a point. Sometimes during the install I receive a ?failed to install? with error code 80070002, twice install has completed and Windows has asked for a restart to finish the install. Actually, you don't need to do that to upgrade to 10, that is only if you want to upgrade through windows update,

All but one or two of the methods there will upgrade for you.

If you are having problems like you mention with 7, you may want to just clean install 10 using your win 7 product key on the COA.

Hello! Since the most recent build of W-10 (9879), my caps lock, num lock, and scroll lock lights do not function on either computer on which I have W-10 installed (a desktop with a USB keyboard and a laptop with an integrated keyboard). The keys still work to correctly toggle the functionality, but the keyboard lights don't work. In case it matters, my keyboard's actual backlights and my mouse's internal light (not the laser, the internal LED) are working correctly, it's just the CL, NL, and SL indicators that don't function.

Anyone have any ideas for fixing this?

Hi, I'm working on my boyfriend's coworker's PC (I was volunteered lol) and am a little stumped. The PC has been in use for quite some time but recently prompted for an activation key. It is indeed a genuine copy. When I called Microsoft I got the runthrough with the installation ID and after having the number repeated 4x (plus once or twice by a rep who couldn't figure out why it didn't work).

It seems pretty clear to me the issue is as addressed here: http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;EN-US;931573. According to this support post, the problem should be easily fixed by making sure Windows is updated with all necessary service packs (he did mention that Windows seemed to get stuck when doing updates so who knows how out-of-date it is). The problem I'm running into is that I can't actually apply any updates while running in limited access! Sooooo...

My question is this: if I just pop the hard drive into my PC as a slave drive, is there a way to update that version of Windows while I'm not actually running it? I have Windows 7 (64 bit) on my PC and I don't want to screw anything up with my version while trying to fix the Windows Vista (64 bit) on the other HD. Seems like it should be simple, but it's a little over my head (I'm only an aspiring geek still...would be lost without you guys).

I do have the installation disk so worst case scenario I can wipe it clean and start over with a fresh installa... Read more

Answer:Applying Windows Vista fix/service pack to slave drive (activation issue)

theres a standalone installer for service packs 1 and 2
follow the steps for running the standalone installer for both
service pack 1: http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/cc766219(WS.10).aspx#Scen2

sp2:http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/dd335037(WS.10).aspx#Scen2
this should run while vista is loaded, but Im not sure if it will let you without checking for genuine windows first.

I have tried manually, setting a different restore point, the fix it center. I do not know what else to try

Answer:cannot update windows service pack 1 for x64 based system (kb976932)

First clean up the file system

Please run a full CHKDSK and SFC scan....
type in the Search box
CMD.EXE
right-click on the only file that is found
Select Run as Administrator
- the Elevated Command Prompt window should pop up
At the Command prompt, type
CHKDSK C: /R
and hit the Enter key.

You will be told that the drive is locked,
and the CHKDSK will run at he next boot - hit the Y key, and then reboot.

The chkdsk will take a few hours depending on the size
of the drive, so be patient!

After the CHKDSK has run, Windows should boot normally
(possibly after a second auto-reboot) - then run the SFC

SFC -System File Checker - Instructions
Click on the Start button
type in the Search box
CMD.EXE
right-click on the only file that is found
Select Run as Administrator - the Elevated Command Prompt window should pop up
At the Command prompt, type

SFC /SCANNOW

and hit the Enter key

Wait for the scan to finish - make a note of any error messages - and then reboot.

Just wondered if anyone else has had the same issue when they tried to update Windows Vista SP1 to SP2. The reason I was trying to update is to update to Internet Explorer 9 for 6 as its my wifes laptop that she very rarely uses. I thought it would be quite easy to do but tried several times and still no joy.
The message that comes up is ERRORNOTFOUND(0x80070490)which I'm aware means Windows cannot search for updates.
I have checked for updates and the following is trying to update but also fails : Windows Search 4.0 for Windows Vista (KB940157)
The laptop is an Acer Aspire 5710 running Vista SP1 32 bit
Finally I have no repair disc as this is already installed so I tried a reboot, F8 and repair and that also failed....
Any suggestion what to try next??
Many thanks

Answer:Windows Vista won't update Service Pack (SP1) 1 to Service Pack 2 (SP2)

Go to Control Panel - Administrative Tools - Services - scroll down to find Windows Update - if not running Start the service.

Hi,
I am a newbie here, so apologies for the long post.

My PC recently went into hibernation mode, and soon after i restarted windows noticed sector errors and fixed them. HOWEVER, since then it will not start windows, and now it tells me "missing operating system"

I can access the motherboard boot screen and see all of the drives(including disc drive), i have used the command prompt and can see that all the drives are active, however the SSD boot drive is not NTFS but RAW.

I have tried using my windows 7(ultimate) backup disc & a windows 7(Home premium) install disc, but both will not let me access windows, without a fresh install.

Could this be as simple as the driver for the SSD is no longer on the PC?, and i now need to source it and install it?, or is it likely that the drive is ruined?

I have a NAS which has the windows backup's stored on there, however the PC will not let me access the NAS without installing Windows, can i install the Home premium version on a new SSD and restore the ultimate from my NAS backup once the windows install is complete?

In addition is there any way to rescue the data on the corrupt SDD?, or to reuse the SSD etc etc.

Sorry for all the questions, but hopefully someone can help!

hello everyone. I have an HP zv6000 laptop that's probably 4-5 years old. I attempted to use it today and I got that message stating the OS cannot be found or is corrupt. I last used it the other day just to pay some bills and nothing else. I removed the HD and put it back in. I've tried to open safe mode with nothing more than just the HP screen coming up then that message. Anyone else have ideas? I've got a ridiculous amount of information on there and I'm pretty much fearing I've lost it all....

So here is my problem: Occasionally, after reboot I get "Error loading operating system". After that the only thing I can do is shut down the computer and fix the windows MBR/Boot Sector (see bellow?).

I'm running a clean install of Windows XP Pro SR3 on a Lenovo T61 laptop. I have confirmed that in the majority of times the problem with the MBR/Boot Sector happens during the windows session and not necessarily upon reboot. When it happens there are no symptoms in windows except for when I try to run chkdsk, I get the following error:

"The type of the filesystem is RAW.
CHKDSK is not available for RAW drives."

I've had my T61 for 6 months now and I've had this problem about 15 times so far. Obviously this makes my T61 unstable and is becoming a major problem (I like to shut down the computer before taking it anywhere, and I don't really use Hibernate).

Solving this problem is very easy and takes 3 minutes? But the Win XP CD is needed for the fix and I don't want to carry it around with me everywhere. And anyway, it's annoying and makes my T61 crippled?

To fix the problem:
1 Change AHCI -> Compatibility in BIOS.
2 Boot using the Windows XP CD.
3 Enter the Recovery Console (press R).
4 "fixboot"
5 "fixmbr"
6 Restart ("exit").
7 Change back to AHCI in Bios.

Hi everyone,
I had windows 10 installed on my Dell Inspiron 7720 laptop for around a year. I wanted to roll back to windows 8.1, so i downloaded the usb media from microsoft website.I booted from the pen drive and formatted all the drives. After that I proceeded to install windows 8.1. When the setup had just started copying files, my laptop shut down due to low battery. Now when i am trying to boot from usb or dvd, i am getting an error saying "An operating system was not found. Try disconnecting any drives that don't contain an operating system. Press Ctrl+Alt+Del to resart".
Also, when I am trying to change the boot order or to load default settings in bios, I am getting an error - "FORMSET 98FBBCFB-1392-4FDE-ABB8-C41CC5AD7D6D
Failed to save storage: Boot_mem-Boot_ITEMS. Status Access Denied"
Someone suggested me to reset the bios by reseating the CMOS Battery. Did that but still getting same error. I have run out of idea now, and desperately need help. If someone has any suggestion, please help me out.
Thanks,
Ravi Kaurav

So, I was getting bored and decided to follow up on some of the performance tweeking I've been doing. Anyway, I got a bit sidetracked and decided to go to the "Reboot Time" tread, which them prompted me to go ahead and diable some of my useless startup processes. Thing is, something strange kind of popped out at me... Why are there two "Microsoft Windows Operating System" processes when as far as I can tell from the reboot thread, people have 1?

I'm assuming it isn't smart to randomly diable either, so I came here to ask.

Answer:Multiple "Windows Operating System" Startup Processes?

It has to do with your Sidebar/gadgets. But I don't know why you would have two though. You might expand it to look at what it all says and post it. It's best not to start disabling services and startup items if you're not fully aware of what they do. If you want to speed up performance then I suggest reading thru Brinks tutorial on how to speed things up.

It requires disabling Secure Boot first to upgrade a Win8 PC to Win7: UpDowngrade Windows 8 to Windows 7.

Then follow these special steps to install to UEFI (Unified Extensible Firmware Interface) - Install Windows 7 with - Windows 7 Forums

or Bypass UEFI to Install WIn7.

To understand UEFI better so you can choose, watch this video: Technical Note: UEFI BIOS vs. Legacy BIOS - YouTube

Hi,

how to disable Caps lock, num lock, scroll lock screen messages?

I have desktop pc with two keyboards usb and bluetooth. Also TOSHIBA Bluetooth Stack software, but in device manager: keyboard > hid keyboard device both using microsoft drivers. And I dont have any software installed for keyboards. Also bluetooth has separate system tray indications (it is also disabled) so its not that. I made some googling and found other fix it with Hkey_Local_Machine\Software\Widcomm\BTConfig\General KeyIndication set to 0, but I dont have it in registry. Acualy I dont have anywhere in registry KeyIndication. So any ideas how to disable it? Thanks

Answer:Caps lock, num lock, scroll lock screen messages

Hi,

You'll find that the messages are controlled by a piece of software that came pre-installed on your machine when you bought it. Try looking for a Hotkey managing app to see if the notifications can be disabled.

For some time now, i have been experiencing that my Num Lock, Caps Lock and Scroll Lock all lights up (not blinking) all at the same time, I tried to google it but i can not find any solutions or explanations for it.

Does anyone know if it is bad? and what is causing this?

I am having a wired keyboard with nothing fancy just a standard issue Logitech keyboard.

Can you toggle those functions off, one at a time? Sometimes restarting the computer will use the last state it was in, I'd fully shut down and pull the power cord from the computer and the keyboard cable then put them back and try again.

Sometimes electrical components needs to have all power sources removed and reintroduced to work properly.  Try performing a hard reset first, if it doesn't work then try updating your BIOS.  If neither works...It's pretty much dead and not worth fixing.  To Perform A Hard Reset Shut down the computer by going to the Start menu and selecting shut down. (If you have no display, hold the power button down for  5 seconds)Disconnect the AC Adapter from the notebook.Remove the battery from the bottom of the notebook.  There will be a switch/button to eject the battery.Wait at least 1 minute with all power sources disconnected.Re-insert the battery and reconnect the AC Adapter and then attempt to power on the notebook.

Hi, I've searched the net and this forum but can't seem to find an answer. I'm sure it's probably simple but I've never seen it before when I was using XP.

Why is there an entry in Startup titled "Windows Operating System"?

I'm loathe to uncheck it, I just don't understand why it would be there?

I would like to lay out some of my opinions here on Windows 7:

1.I think the operating system's design is pretty lackluster. The features aren't too advanced from previous versions of Windows, and it gives a "plain" kind of feel when using the system.

2.After 14 years since Windows 98, the best loading animation logo Windows 7 can use is a little waving flag?

3.Why do the taskbar icons ALWAYS HAVE TO be on the left of application tabs?

4.Why is Windows 7's help documentation so poor, under-written, and out of date?

5.Still always comes with crappy, low-quality pre-installed software.

These are just five poorly written reasons in this spur of the moment(I'm sick right now)that I can come up with.

Question is: Will Windows 8 satisfy me? Possibly others who agree as well?

Please share your thoughts.

I'm a sloppy typist. I don't know if I hit some key combo or what but I was typing a letter in word pad and suddenly my typing is in all caps. I have used a reg file to disable my caps lock key on this laptop because it gets in my way - a long time ago. I know it cannot be the caps lock key. I do not have a shift key sticking.

I saved the letter, then copied it to Polyedit another word processor, and it still types in all caps. Firefox does not seem to be effected. I even tried rebooting and nothing helped.

I have an old Gateway Select CPU with an AMD 800 MHZ, 30 gig Hardrive and I believe 256 RAM. This was a refurbished unit that I got from Ubid. It came with recovery disks that I have used successfully about 3 years ago. My son downloaded so much crap o his computer that it finally crashed again. When trying to use the Restore software this time, it froze. So I put in the Start-up floppy and when start-up got to the point of asking if I wanted to create a partition, I did. I have used Fdisk to make sure that the partition is active and it is. However, without the start-up floppy I recieve the "No operating system found" message and using the floppy after it runs thru the checks it eventually gets around to the A:/ promt. During the checks, it does not locate any of the drivers which is probably why I can't even do "setup" using the floppy and the Windows 98 se CD. I would like to get the computer to recognize the CD Rom so that I can put in Disk 1 of the Restore software and continue to "Write zeroes" to the hardrive and start over again with tis machine. Or at least be able to run "set-up" successfully. Any help is greatly appreciated, but keep in mind I am not very bright when it comes to technology.

So I was doing a little bit of coding for my bot today, listening to music so I can stay motivated to keep working on it without going insane, and all of a sudden my music goes out.... Now I know that windows vista has a popular problem with the ever famous Error 1075, dependancy or groups error, but this is not that error. For some reason my Audio won't start when I try to manually start it, or when I try to manually load svchost.exe from the system32 folder, witch actually worked last time I had a sound problem.

The error I'm getting now is a "Access Denied" error, Error 0x80070005 to be exact. "Error 0x80070005: Access is denied." Nothing fancy really, but the weird thing is I'm on the main administrator account for the computer, and I've done this before with no problems at all. It will start to load it up for about 2 or 3 seconds before it gets this error, and then no go.

I really need this to be fixed because I go crazy coding without music, and my bot is far from finished. Please post anything you've got on this.

Hello everybody. I have a difficult but interesting problem. A few days ago after a system crash I lost all sound, the volume control was gone and error saying no mixer is preset would appear every time I tryed to play a sound. Onboard sound is turned on in BIOS, in device manager it displayed as woking properly. I reinstaled the drivers, and uninstalled the onboard sound from hardware manager, and manualy reinstalled it, none of it did anything. In control panel> Sounds and Audio devices is sais " no audio device", but in Winamp or Ventrilo I went into the options and is output device it was set to some defalt generic item, I changed it back to my onboard sound and now winamp play mp3s just fine, as well as ventrillo.
So this is not a driver or hardware problem, this is a windows problem.

I have researched it quite a bit and found a few poeple with exactly the same problem. It apears that Windows Audio service is dissplayed as "stopped" even tho it's set to Automatic. Alot of people were able to solve their problem by simply clicking the start service button and it all worked fine onse again. How ever few (I'm one of these guys) the service would not start, instead we get this error

"could not start the Windows Audio service on local computer. Error 126: The specified module could not be found"
