Quick ram upgrade question

Question: Quick ram upgrade question

Hey,
I recently decided I'm going to start using my old laptop again. I swapped the hard drive for an SSD and I'm quite pleased with the performance boost that got me. I am now looking for a ram upgrade from 2gb to 8gb.
I have a Dell inspiron n4010.
I went to crucial's website and did the system scan. The scan said that this would fit my needs.

Unfortunately, crucial doesn't ship to me. I'm forced to look elsewhere. I looked for something similar on another store's website. My question to all the experts out there is: will 2 of these work with my laptop and get me the 8gb of ram I need?
thanks for the help!

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Answer: Quick ram upgrade question

Yes. The specs are exactly the same. Over the years I have used both Kingston and Crucial many times for memory upgrades and both are excellent.

You can also do a memory scan at Dell's own website. Just don't buy what they offer because they'll tell you to only buy genuine Dell memory blah, blah, blah. The Kingston will do you quite fine.

Right now I have a AMD A4-4000 APU installed on my PC and it's not that bad. But I was thinking of upgrading it to an AMD A8-6500 Quad Core(3.5Htz).. or possibly a A6-6420K.

Any thoughts if this would be worth the money to upgrade or would it not matter that much in the long run.
TIA
Jeff

Answer:Quick question on a possible CPU upgrade..

Well, as you can see from this comparison:

AMD A4-4000 vs A8-6500

They have a lot of similar characterstics. The A8 is faster, but more expensive. The A4 gives you more bang for the buck though.

They both suck power and generate a lot of heat. The GPU is better in the A8. Overall performance is about 1.5x faster, although you could maybe tweak that by using a little faster memory as the A8 supports DDR-1866.

The A6-6420 is quite a bit less of a difference:

AMD A4-4000 vs A6-6420K

Only about 1.27x faster, Same power and heat characteristics...

I never understand why people want to keep using these ancient processors that kick out so much heat and use so much power for so little performance....

I skipped Vista altogether and now I want to finally move to Win 7. I see these retail box upgrade versions of Win 7 for sale and i'm wondering if i'll be eligible for that upgrade as an owner of XP Professional OEM license. I can't seem to find any info on that, MS site doesn't say which OS version is required for the upgrade. I'm hoping to get the Pro version with both 32 and 64 bit CDs but i don't know whether i can even upgrade from XP Pro and if i can can i do it with an OEM license. Any one know?

I currently have 4GB of memory in my system, and I want to upgrade to 12GB.

I have 4 slots on my mobo in total with two filled (with 2GB sticks in each), and want to fill the remaining 2 slots with two modules of 4GB each for a total of 12.

Just want to make sure if this will work correctly with no issues. My mobo is in my system specs below and so is my current RAM type.

Does it matter what new RAM I get as long as it is the same type (DDR3) or do the other factors such as Manufacturer, Speed, and CAS Latency have to be the same too?

Thanks for the replies. All knowledge is welcome!

Answer:Quick RAM Upgrade Question

I know very small amount on this but from my previous experience you want to maximize the similarity to avoid getting instability issue. The main factor is DDR3, the second biggest factor is memory clock speeds in your case being 1333.

Buying from other manufactures or with different CAS timings, has very little impact. Especially if you do not overclock.

I do not know if you will still continue to gain the DUAL Channel Memory advantage though.

Long time lurker, first time poster..

I have a Windows 7machine in a closet that I use as a NAS.. It has no monitor or keyboard attached- I access it via remote desktop.. I've got Windows 10 downloaded and ready to upgrade.. My question is can I let it do it's thing, or will I need to eventually hookup a keyboard and monitor? Supposedly it saves all your files and settings, but just wanted confirmation..

I would be prepared with a monitor and keyboard. I am assuming this is Windows 7 Pro being upgraded to Windows 10 Pro? Windows 10 Home does not have the RDP server - only client.

Hi. I know that the E6500 is listed as max 8gb. is that because of OS limits or the chipset or other? I have 8gb already and wanted to go to 16gb if I could.I am running Windows 7 64 bit as the OS. Thanks.

Jay

Answer:R6500 RAM upgrade quick question

Hi Jay,
The Windows 7 64-bit Operating System supports more that 8GB, however the Intel GM45 Express Chipset in the Latitude E6500 supports a maximum of 8GB RAM. Hence, the memory cannot be upgraded to 16GB.
Please let me know if you need further information.

I currently have a E6400 Conroe Duo in here and just got a Q6600 Quad. Can I simply swap out the Duo for the Quad without having to reinstall XP? I know the mobo will work with it. I feel kinda silly asking the question, but I've simply never upgraded a CPU with the same socket before. =P

Do I need to then upgrade to Vista Service Pack 2 before installing my Windows 7 Professional Upgrade, or will it still work on top of service pack 1?

Thank you.

I was hoping that I could upgrade from vista home to win 7 (upgrade) without needing the original vista disc. I got a hp dv5t laptop about a year ago and it didn't include one. If it is necessary could I just purchase a vista disc from somewhere? I am not sure where the best place would be to get one. Thanks in advance.

If Vista is installed and activated then you will be fine. Just boot up your system and drop the 7 disc in, hit update, then sit back and relax.

I've never done this, so I'm left with a quick question. My wife's laptop is currently running W7 x64 Home Premium. If we have a legit key for Professional, it is just as simple as clicking the Change Key link in the Computer Properties screen and inputting the new key? We're talking about getting a small Dell SFF to be a domain controller at home, and I'd need to upgrade her laptop's version. I could do a clean install, but this way would be much simpler, if this is the procedure.

Hello I own a Compaq Presario 2100 Intel NoteBook. It came with Windows XP Home edition, and to tell you the truth im disgusted with home edition. So I've decided to upgrade to Windows XP Pro Corporate Edition.
I have done the following things:

1. Downloaded all drivers for my lappy from the compaq website.
2. Set the CD drive to Boot at startup, and checked the windows xp pro cd (it boots)
3. Burned all the files I want to keep on CD.

Is there anything else you good techies out there can recomend I do before I do the clean-install of windows xp pro?

Many Sincere Thanks, John Westlund AKA Lilmeanman

Is it ok if I do a clean install for windows 7 ultimate and when it prompts me, do I need to give it the xp product key or vista home key ?

By the way I did this route before with windows 2000 and XP pro I just want to make sure this won't be to much of a problem... :/

You cant do it this way anymore. That method was removed with Vista. You will have to have Vista fully installed and activated in order to use the Win7 Upgrade.

Hi guys.

To make a long story short, I am looking to build a new system within the next two months. I know Vista is coming out very soon, but I would personally like to stick with Windows XP for the time being. I have an old Dell with Windows XP on it, and my question is this. If I buy an "Upgrade" version of Windows XP, would the OEM Windows XP CD that came with my Dell be enough to cleanly install the Upgrade version onto my new system?

Thanks in advance.

Just make sure your motherboard supports 6GB. Some motherboards are pretty specific about what sizes they support. check your manual. If it's listed you'll be fine.

Hello i just bought my new pc today and love it any way.

I want to put in my new video card and my new add on of Memory stick (RAM)

THe ram is the right type i know for sure.

And need instructions i know how to put the vid card in but last time i did this i didnt remove all the old vid card wateva and it messed up. THank you very much

Answer:Hello quick question quick answer

The video card is one piece you can't remove pieces of it, so you can't mess up that way. If you can fit it into the motherboard it will work. You don't need to remove the old one. It's just most people use AGP cards and AGP standard only allows for one slot per motherboard, which means you have to remove the old card in order to put it in. But if it's a PCI card you can stick as many in as you want.

Hi folks,  After several weeks of research and contemplation, I finally decided to order a P50.  I'm excited for it's forthcoming arrival (hopefully by the end of the week). I had a quick question regarding an SSD install.  I've read several of the threads about it and I just wanted to clarify before it arrives.  I've ordered a 512gb Samsung NVMe M.2 drive from newegg.  I've also already acquired the m.2 mounts/brackets from lenovo. Can I just install the new drive, remove the stock (500gb hd) and do a clean install of windows via a thumb drive/rufus or will I run into trouble with the P50 recognizing it?  I'd rather do a fresh install and not clone them if possible. Thanks for all of the help.  I'm really looking forward to getting this machine configured and operational. The configuration I ended up going with is as follows: - FHD (non-touch)- Xeon/M2000M- 500gb hd (ordered the samsung NVMe and 2tb samsung hd to replace the 500gb hd)- 64gb non-ECC (I was going to upgrade this later but with the discount portal it was way less than aftermarket)- color calibrator (ehh)- backlit keyboard I'll hopefully get a docking station in the near future but need to do a bit more research on that front.

Answer:NVMe Question - Finally ordered a P50 (Thanks for all the advice) - One last, quick question

I did a clean install to a new NVMe drive when I got my P50. I did it with Windows 10 on thumb drive. I didn't even have to enter the product key. It was completely painless. Good luck!

Hi guys, I'm a huge noob when it comes to networking.

My HTPC is using onboard wired network on an Intel D865perl motherboard. My bedroom computer is using wireless G- both are connected to a Belkin PRE-N router. I transfer my downloaded data from my bedroom to the HTPC downstairs.

Would I get faster transfer/streaming speeds by adding a PRO gigabit 1000 network card?

Would I automatically get faster speeds if I install it, since I read that the gigabit requires a bit of configuration.

Thanks guys!

Answer:Quick Noob question, question on /1000 card...

Gigabit wouldn't help since your bottle neck is your 54Mbps G wireless.

So I recently setup a domain for small non-profit company.

The domain is hopecouncil.org, but they also have a website hopecouncil.org.

Users can sometimes get to http://hopecouncil.org in a browser and sometimes they can't.

When I do an nslookup hopecouncil.org I get the IP of the server returned.

What can I do so when they want to get to website they get there, but logging into the hopecoucnil.org domain takes them to the DC?

Answer:Quick Domain Question...maybe DNS question

You've found out the hard way why the windows domain name should never be the same as the external DNS name. 8)

AFAIK you have four options:
1) "Re-educate" your users to type www.hopecouncil.org when they are at work
2) Use a proxy server and have it redirect hopecouncil.org to your web host
3) Install IIS on every domain controller and have it redirect
4) Use a registry hack on every domain controller: http://goo.gl/AAokV

Does Windows MCE 2005 qualify as a valid product to upgradge to XP Pro?

Some jackass here ordered 2 new machines with MCE on them, and MCE 2k5 doesn't allow domain joining.

So now I need to upgrade / re-install to XP Pro, and need to know if I can do that from MCE 2k5 or if I need to purchase a full retail install.

Answer:Quick XP Pro Upgrade questions

Nope

I didn't install it to a domain, but I thought MCE2005 could be joined to a domain during the initial setup. I've also seen websites on how to enable MCE2005 to join a domain, but I'm not sure if this would be "legal".

If this is a business with a domain, wouldn't you have VLK licenses, or is this a very small company?

Sorry for this query because the answer may be blindingly obvious to everyone, but I can't find any info either here or when Googling. . .

Microsoft says it isn't supporting SP1 after October 10th so XP Home users like me had better install SP2. I'm always loathe to install just about anything from Microsoft because chaos has always followed in the past.

Anyway. Today I lost the morning downloading and auto installing Service Pack 2. . and having lost the morning, I've now lost the IE icon on my Quick Launch toolbar at the bottom of my screen.

All other QL icons are intact. But no Internet Explorer.

The only way of opening the browser is to click Start then go to the tp of the menu and click IE there -- hardly an improvement.

Has anyone else experienced the loss of the IE icon from their QL bar after installation of SP2? If so, what's the cure????

Thanks!

Answer:IE quick launch gone after SP2 upgrade

Not sure why it went away, but I do know how too fix it.
Go to the start menu and right click on the IE icon. Choose copy. Now go to the desktop and right click, choose paste.
Now drag the IE icon into the quicklaunch area. You will see a black line when it is in the right place. Let go and you should have an IE icon in quicklaunch. If not, keep trying.

I had to reset my router once and it removed the wireless security encryption and password. I live in a house with houses spaced a good amount apart. My neighbors are all old and wouldn't try to connect to my router and they have their own wireless connection. So my question is, do I need wifi encryption if I don't have to worry about outsiders connecting? Also, would I be more vulnerable to malicious attacks via internet if I didn't have one?

Answer:Just a quick question

Your signals will extend beyond your house and anyone passing by or in the neighborhood can connect into them and steal information from you. If you do not care about anything on your PC being seen by anyone else and this would have to mean you never perform any kind of financial transactions ( banking, credit card purchases, taxes,.....etct...etc ), and you don't even care about your emails possibly being read. And no one else ever comes to your house and uses your unsecured internet connection and no one uses it for wifi for phones, tablet and so on ( this list goes on and on). Then feel free to leave your network unsecure. Basically the hackers will love you.

Oh and by the way, you also expose yourself to the danger that a hacker could perform undesirable things from your network. Possibly illegal things that will be traced back to your home network. Guess who will be held accountable?

I've noticed that when you insert the disc in, once its in the drive wont open while im playing, so in order to get the cd rom drive out i have to exit the game. Ive also noticed that i can only play with the same Serial number on LAN. So i need a good cd rom program that can make good copies, i have already tried nero, do you guys have any other free copier ideas?

Question: quick question

I am trying to help a friend and I wanted to know if I can run the DDS and gmer in safe mode? The computer does not have internet access and seems to have the Security suite virus

Answer:quick question

Yes, you can, if Safe Mode is accessible. Use the F8 method for accessing Safe Mode.

Restart your computer and boot into Safe Mode by tapping the F8 key repeatedly until a menu shows up (and choose Safe Mode from the list). In some systems, this may be the F5 key, so try that if F8 doesn't work. Login on your usual account. Make sure to close any open browsers.

How do you create a folder on your Start/Program menu?

I know how easy it is in Win 98 SE, but this function seems to be gone. In the old days, you just created a new folder, and you can drag a few items listed on your "list of programs", and drop them in there.

But for something that simple, when I go to Advanced or Add in the Customerize tab of the Task Bar, there is no option that allows a new folder to be created. So you can't group misc. programs in one folder.

For e.g., right now, my MS excel, MS word is on the main program listing, how would you create a folder called MS Office, so you can move those 2 in there?

Answer:Quick question on XP Pro

Right click on the start button, left click Open all users.
There's the program listing so double left into that and create a folder. Move around whatever you want there and you'll see it when you click Start/Programs.

That's assuming you're a local administrator on the box.

Question: Quick question

Hey-
One of my teachers asked me if there was some kind of very simple guide online (that he can print out) that I knew of that would show him how to install an ethernet card in his computer at home. He just got Cable Internet, the tech gave him an ethernet card but didn't install it for him (go figure).
I couldn't find anything simple on Linksys or D-Link's sites, anyone have some good instruction guides for this?

Any help will be appreciated,
Thanks,
Jeff

Question: quick xp question

Right now I'm running xp home, i'm going to get xp pro soon. my questions are:

1. Is it true that xp home doesn't allow you to use a floppy drive?
2. Does xp pro allow floppy drives?
3. Is it true that you don't have to register xp pro and you can reinstall it over and over again?

as for question 1 & 2 I have a floppy drive installed that only works in dos mode. It shows up on xp as working, but won't allow the drive to read.

thanks for any info.

Question: quick question...

ok, so for example:

an AM athlon 64 X2 3800+, the 3800+; is this a reference to the combined speeds of the cores on the chip? or is the 3800+ the individual speed of each of the two cores?

the reason I ask is this: I understand that dual core processors only fed a thread to each core individually, and thus, if a program is run, it will only use one core until the second core is needed for aditional threads. Hense, dual core processors are excelent for multi-tasking, but I want to make sure that the advertised speed relfects the speed one will get out of their processor should they only be running one program, i.e, GAMES!

Answer:quick question...

I'm no expert, but I think that it would make sense.

If your game takes up an entire core (which would be pretty big) your computer would still have room to manipulate data 'behind-the-scenes'.

I would think that it wouldn't affect game-play because of the second core.

But again...I'm no expert...

Question: Quick question

My friend has a Asus M2N-SLI Deluxe mobo. There is a 12 volt 4 pin power connector on the motherboard as well as the 24 pin one. The 20 pin power supply connecter goes into the 24 pin slot, while the 4 pin plugs in next to it to fill the last 4 pins. Now there is that 12v 4 pin slot I was talking about. Is it required that one plugs into that? Because the power supply ony has the one..p.s the power supply is a Roswell SLI ready.

Answer:Quick question

i believe that you are describing the EZ plug on the motherboard. does it look like the same plugin that plugs into your harddrive, floppy, cd-drive,etc.? because if it does, you are not required to plug any power into it, unless you plan on running 2 or more video cards.

Access your router and check.
Or, if using a modem access your operating system and check.

Do 24 pin power supplies work on 20 pin mobo's or do you need a converter?

Answer:quick question

No, 24 pin psu do not plug into 20 pin motherboards. I would suggest to anyone to buy a 24pin psu, in the future all motherboards will be 24 pin. Just get an adapter, they are less than 5$. Its woth it to do it this way than to buy a new psu for a new mobo.

Question: Quick Question

Whats better, NVIDIA GEForce 210 or NVIDIA GEForce 8800 GTS, or are they even the same thing?

Answer:Quick Question

On paper, the 8800 is better. Assuming it's clocked to what Nvidia have on their site of course. In my experience most of the cards I've had are underclocked. The memory bandwidth alone is almost 5x better on an 8800 though.

NVIDIA GeForce 8800 GT
NVIDIA Geforce 210

From experience, I have had a 210, and it really depends what you want from it. It is definitely not a gaming card, but if you want a decent entry level card that can play some older games, and watch HD video, then it is not bad at all. I've never had an 8800 so can't comment.

You helped me fix some things on my computer the other day. All has gone well except I have had to run Ada ware and other programs just to keep it clean if I go on the internet at all. Anyway, I have noticed something new, last one on the bottom of the list, so would you check it all out again to see if it is still clean. Thanks.....for all you do for everyone.

Answer:A quick question

threestar

You didn't post the new log. Anyway once the system is clean steps need to be taken to make it harder for that crap to get installed. If you simply went through the removal process without taking preventive steps..you'll get it all back in a matter of days. Please read through the spyware prevention section on how to protect yourself from spyware/adware Here

Take heed...and use the programs and methods recommended.

I have a new HD that was given to me as a gift..It's a IDE HD and my PC is built with a SATA HD. What steps should I take to add the IDE HD to my system? I have cables of all sorts. Just want to check my thoughts with others.. Thanks.

Answer:Quick HD Question..

Make sure the BIOS is set to boot off the sata drive before any ide drives. Then just plug it in, your motherboard likely still has 1 place to plug in an IDE drive, probably the CD/DVD. I'd set the CD DVD drive to Slave and set the hard drive to Master, but it really doesn't matter so long as one is Master and the other is Slave. You 'can' use Cable Select (CS) but I don't like to recommend that way.

If you don't have any IDE controllers on the motherboard you can buy an IDE controller card to go in a free PCI slot.

If you don't have any free PCI slots you can buy an external enclosure and toss the drive in there and connect through USB or Firewire.

If not go to "My Computer"\Properties then disable system restore, restart computer and re-enable system restore.

Question: A Quick Question

I have a quick question about just computers in general.

Im not too computer savvy, and I was wondering what exactly does a reformat do? After using my laptop for about a few years, its not doing as well as before. Any help?

Answer:A Quick Question

Reformatting erases all the data on the hard drive. Some people regularly perform a reformat and reinstall on their computer. This is akin to demolishing your house and then rebuilding it again on the same spot: all the cracks in the walls and creaky floors are taken care of and you get a nice new fresh coat of paint, but it's perhaps overkill.A couple of less drastic things you can do to reclaim some of your lost speed is to defragment the hard drive. Then do a full scan for malware using your favorite up-to-date malware scanner followed by a visit to Windows Update to install all the latest security and stability patches from Microsoft. Carrying our house metaphor further, this is like a maid, a building inspector, and a handyman respectively.

I'm not quite sure I understand what you're trying to do. If you just did a clean install of Windows 7 you need to download and install all new, Windows 7 compatible drivers - starting with the chipset driver.

Question: Quick Question

I didn't post logs from the READ & RUN ME due to the fact I have already done that about 6 months ago and then again about 2 weeks ago. In addition, this may or may not be malware related...

About a week and 1/2 ago, I noticed something randomly appear in the task bar labeled as "monitor." It was obviously minimized because it hadn't popped up on the desktop for me to see. So, I clicked on it and in the top right corner of the desktop appeared a small blank window with "monitor" in the title bar and "about:blank" in the address bar. It quickly disappered from the desktop, but ot from the taskbar. It continues to do this for as many times as I try to maximize it to the desktop. If I right click on it in the taskbar and click close, it goes away. The occurrence seems to be intermittent with no apparent trigger. Sometimes I'm surfing the web, but not on any sites that I haven't been to before without trouble, sometimes the computer is just sitting with nothing, but AIM on. It's appeared maybe 5 or 6 times if I had to count.

Any ideas as to what this nuisance is and possible ways to get rid of it altogether?

In reality that means nothing! A PC can get badly infected in a half an hour (and that is including the time it takes your PC to boot up from powered down).

No not without seeing all new logs that show your true current state. It could be just from something you are running especially since it goes away when you right click on it. Or it could be malware. Have you installed anything new in the last few weeks? Are you 100% sure of your answer?

Question: Quick DDR Question

if u over clock 2cl or 2.5cl DDR for example- sometimes u may have to loosen the timeings by going to 3cl, relitivly speaking(ppl have said)

but does it work the other way around? if u have DDR500 pc4000, and its running at DDR400 speeds, can u safely and easily increas its timing from 3cl to ex.- 2.5 or 2cl?

Answer:Quick DDR Question

if you overclock you have to change all the timings, although cas latency and cycle time effect stability the most. Yes it does work the other way around though. If the RAM is under clocked it can run at tighter timings. If your DDR500 is say 3-3-3-8 stock timings, then if it was only running at DDR400 you should be able to run it at 2-2-2-5 timings

Hi, I am thinking about buying a CD/RW. I am prob. going to buy from Dabs.com's cd/rw page . I have found this drive ;click here , and it says "Formatted Capacity 650 MB" Does this mean that I can only use 650mb disks, and not 700mb ones? also, are there any better cd/rw on the market for about £50-£60?

Answer:Quick CD/RW question

I chased down that link for the CD burner, but I couldnt find where it said "formatted capacity: 650 MB." it is entirely possible that it will not burn more than 650 MB to a CD, as my (cheapo) burner won't burn more than 700 MB. Lite-on is a pretty cheap company...I just purchased a DVD-ROM made by them, but I can't say I have any complaints about it as of yet. Im not really sure how much 50 pounds translates into, but there are decent burners on the market for around 80 US dollars; Plextor, Sony, and TDK are all good companies offering CD burner solutions cheap. You may have to compromise on speed a little, but its no big loss since unless you have a blazingly fast computer, it won't use the full 32x burn speed. 24/10/40 is just fine, IMHO.

Question: Quick IIS question

I'm just wondering if anyone here can tell me how to view users connected to your http and ftp sites when using IIS 5.1 (Windows xp pro). I know it does allow this cause I brought the menu up once by accident but i've never been able to find it when actually looking for it so i'm hoping someone from here might know. Thanks in advanced.

Just as a note i'm not looking for an app to let me do this I want to know how to do this with what I already have.

Answer:Quick IIS question

Maybe turn on statistics logging:

http://support.microsoft.com/view/tn.asp?kb=313437
http://support.microsoft.com/view/tn.asp?kb=249025

Not sure how easy it is to read the raw log, but there have been made tools to extract reports from the log.
