Kaspersky Policy Based Application Control

Question: Kaspersky Policy Based Application Control

Theoretically speaking, if different types of malware files where to penetrate past Kapsersky's protection and get placed into "Low Restricted", how much damage is possible under default settings?

Relevance 100%
Preferred Solution: Kaspersky Policy Based Application Control

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Answer: Kaspersky Policy Based Application Control

Theoretically speaking, damage same as trusted group. Low restricted is basically trusted group in default settings (Automatic mode). Application control is for interactive mode, in which the prompts gets issued, then Low restricted is useful as much as the user knows.

My portable programs SecurMyBit, VidCoder, etc... were under "Low Restricted" in Application Control.
I move them to "Trusted" in AC.
After couple of days, the programs rules are neither in "Trusted" or "Low Restricted".
When I run the programs, they appear under "Low Restricted" And I again move them to "Trusted" But after couple of days the same mentioned above i.e the programs rules are neither in "Trusted" or "Low Restricted".

Is it a bug or bug on Windows 10 64 or bug in KIS 2017 or ............?

Any info?

Any Kaspersky users experience the above?

Answer:Kaspersky Application Control - Kaspersky Internet Security 2017 bug?

Yes, this happens & not only in 2017 but in earlier versions as well.

I experience it as well, but not quite often as you are. Mine comes when i am disconnected from internet for a while & then connect again, then (i guess) KSN checks the app control rules again & places them (apps) as described in the KSN rule-set.

The problem come from the setting 'Load rule for applications from KSN' in application control, which is enabled by default.

This shouldn't be a problem if you are using default settings (Auto-mode) as Low restricted is basically Trusted in auto-mode. But if you use interactive mode, this causes a lot of prompts which can be quite annoying.

If I enable TAM and allow a file to run (add an exception), I notice the file is added to the Low Restricted category on Application Control. Does this mean that not only does Kaspersky TAM act as a default deny, but also places exception unknowns with restricted rights in Application Control too? If so, pretty cool stuff.

Thanks!

Answer:Kaspersky TAM and Application Control?

Yes, TAM also is provided with white listing and KSN data to assign a trusted group for an unknown application:

Anyway if You know that unknown application and trusts on it You may move it to Trusted group.

Check this, taken from online help of K2017:

Change trust group for applications started before startup of Kaspersky Total Security

Clicking this link opens the Trust group for applications started before startup of Kaspersky Total Security window. In this window, you can change the trust group for applications started before startup of Kaspersky Total Security. Network activity of applications started before the startup of Kaspersky Total Security is controlled according to rules of the selected trust group.

Everytime I start my PC this message pops up

I always click Make Trusted so that it will move it to the trusted group but it just keeps on popping up!

It also tends to pop up when I am watching TV via Media Centre and there are the odd occassions when others pop up ie Windows Search, msn etc.

I assume it is not being moved into the trusted group (otherwise it wouldnt continue to keep popping up every hour or so) but I am not sure how to do this manually.

To be honest, I am not even sure what this application is!

Any advise would be greatly appreciated.

I just wondered if anyone here had an idea of the best application control setting for kaspersky that offers the best protection?

Answer:Kaspersky Application Control Setting???

Hardening privilege control mode
Most of the widely used programs are automatically placed in the Trusted category, because they either have a digital signature of the manufacturer, or are included in the KSN Allow list. This allows toughening the restrictions for the other programs: they can be automatically moved in the High Restricted orUntrusted category. In the latter case, KES will automatically block the start of unknown programs that have no digital signature and for which there are no allowing rules within the policy. If a program necessary for work is blocked, you can configure an exclusion for it.Click to expand...

Set to untrusted for any unsigned application instead of heuristics analyzer by default that chances are going to low restricted or high restricted which sometimes can execute the program in all matters.

I have been playing recently with the QoS tools included with Vista, and while they work great when used on a Domain, I have yet to be able to successfully get the tools to work when using a single machine that is not part of a domain. The configuration options are all identical under the local policy, but the rules created never seem to get properly applied.

So is it possible to use the Policy Based QoS tools without being part of a domain?

Kaspersky Patents Hardware-Based Antivirus

The U.S. patent office has approved an application from Kaspersky Labs today for a hardware based antivirus solution. Supposedly the new hardware-implemented AV module can?t be bypassed by rootkits and has its own CPU and memory.

An anti-virus (AV) system based on a hardware-implemented AV module for curing infected computer systems and a method for updating AV databases for effective curing of the computer system. The hardware-based AV system is located between a PC and a disk device. The hardware-based AV system can be implemented as a separate device or it can be integrated into a disk controller. An update method of the AV databases uses a two-phase approach. First, the updates are transferred to from a trusted utility to an update sector of the AV system. Then, the updates are verified within the AV system and the AV databases are updated. The AV system has its own CPU and memory and can be used in combination with AV application.

Best Buy Co, the No.1 U.S. electronics retailer, is pulling Kaspersky Lab’s cyber security products from its shelves and website, amid concerns that the Moscow-based firm may be vulnerable to Russian government influence.

Best Buy felt there were "too many unanswered questions" and so decided to discontinue selling the antivirus products, said U.S. newspaper StarTribune, which first reported the retailer's decision, citing a source familiar with the matter.

Personally, I think was done because of pressure from the U.S. government.

Hi People,

I've recently purchased a 4510G-48 HP 3COM switch and have got some questions with regards to the configuration.

Currently, I have configured 4 VLAN's - VLAN 100, 200, 300, and 400 each with their own interface IP on the 172.16 network subnetted into 6. so VLAN100: 172.16.32.253 VLAN200: 172.16.64.253 and so on.

The problem I have is setting a default route to the gateway as the gateway will not support trunking. Due to this, it also has 4 gateway IPs with addresses as: VLAN100: 172.16.32.254 VLAN200: 172.16.64.254

I need to find a way of routing 0.0.0.0 0.0.0.0 traffic coming from each subnet to their respective gateway addresses: i.e

172.16.32.0/19 external traffic routes to: 172.16.32.254

172.16.64.0/19 external traffic routes to: 172.16.64.254

It was my understanding that you should set up an ACL basic group to assign the source address group (although I dont understand the wildcard settings?) and a route policy with if-match rules to the ACL group and a destination group (0.0.0.0 0.0.0.0)

However, I'm having real problems getting this to work. Does anyone have any idea how to do this?

Many thanks,

Shaun

I am not able to access internet the moment KIS 2015 is running. This is happening even if KIS protection is disabled but it is still running in system tray. Only when I exit the application internet access comes back again. Ok also one more point. This disconnection happens after one minute or less and when I exit the KIS 2015 the reconnection happens after a long time and sometimes I have to reboot the machine. It means KIS 2015 is blocking some traffic and holding on to it till I reboot or windows refreshes automatically after some time.

My Machine is Windows XP Home version 2002 SP3 Toshiba Satellite Laptop (8 yrs more old) and 2 GB RAM.

KIS is KASPERSKY Internet security 2015 version 15.0.1.415 and also the latest  version 15.0.2.361 both giving same issue.

But they are working on my laptop with windows 7. So my home environment is NOT the issue here.

Also i tried using both my home environment which is a broadband router connection to my telephone service provider but also used datacard. So network settings on my laptop running windows XP is NOT the issue.

And now more findings.

KASPERSKY technical expert took remote admin of my PC and tried to see by changing settings but I could see the chap knew less than me and the moment KIS started running net was getting disconnected and hence remote connnection was also going off.

Hi Shantanu,
First try resetting KIS as per http://forum.kaspersky.com/index.php?s=05a9e3e2ed8f32e141bc6a9e7f1e79a8&showtopic=263660&st=0&p=2032752&
If it dont help,
recall if you had any other security software installed prior to KIS or along with it? How was it removed?
Have you tried clean installing KIS opting to remove any settings that may be backed up during the uninstallation process?
You should make use of the removal tool and steps listed at http://support.kaspersky.com/common/service.aspx?el=1464 and then clean up junk files using Ccleaner's cleaner module (dont run the registry cleanup)
Let me know how you go...

Can somebody explain to me what a LAN Based Application is? I've tried to google it but cannot find nothing. I would imagine its an application that only operates within a LAN, so i.e an office, so it wont be able to communicate to another office?

Thanks

Answer:LAN Based Application

It is an application that runs only on a LAN (Local Area Network) without internet access.

The LAN could be small, 3 - 4 clients; or large with over 500 clients in multiple buildings.
I have worked in both situations and used propriatary applications that ran on the LAN, but were not designed to be accessed from the internet.

Video Conferencing, Remote Access Control, Gaming Servers, all started as LAN applications.

This is the best info I could find and it isn't much.

Question: Policy Control

Policy Control .. please ..

Policy Control - JavaScript and Flash blocker - version 0.3.0, offered by rynu.smith (- link to add0n.com home page of this extension).

This Chrome extension block third-party or all resources of style, script, image, font, xmlhttprequest types ..
This is an alternative to "NoScript Security Suite" extension to provide filtering rules for different types of resources that each hostname is allowed to use.

This extension can be used as a simple image blocker or even Flash blocker or it can be used to improve users privacy and security by blocking third-party resources.

Available Policy Rules:

Font (@font-face)
Image
Media (audio and video)
Object (plugin-handled content)
Script (JavaScript)
Stylesheet (CSS)
Sub Document (iframes and frames)
XMLHttpRequest
Ping
Content-Security-Policy Reports
WebSocket
Other Resources

My settings example:

In Status - notch case to be Policy Control enabed!

Font: Block third-party
Image: Allow all
Media: Block third-party
Object: Block all
Script, Stylesheet, SubDocument, XMLHttpRequest - all 4 are Allow all
Ping, CSP Reports, WebSocket, Other Resources - all 4 are Block all here.

After you have done your settings, click Save!

Must have Chrome extension to me.

I have a neat idea that I would like to try out. Caution this is going to get nerdy not just geeky. I play D&D and my group uses a program that has our characters on it. It's a very old program made for Win 95 but I have made it work in everything from Linux to Vista.

I want to find a way to put the program online so my group can all edit their characters instead of doing it last minute before we play. I have a web server and hosting so thats no issue. My first thought is to use a VPN or terminal services but is there a way to just host the application by it's self? What I would like is something as non technical as having a desktop icon they can just click and it opens the program as if it's local.

Answer:make an application web based

Sure, just rewrite it in some language your web server can run and have it save all its data in an appropriate database accessible to the web server.

If you're talking about just putting the .exe on your website, it doesn't really work that way. By default, Windows won't run programs from the internet, and the web server won't allow you to write data to it. Depending on how the app works, you may be able to give each person a copy and configure it to save its data remotely in a central location. It might be possible to do something like Sysinternals Live, but I doubt you'd be able to do with just regular hosted webspace. That also doesn't take into account the saving/sharing of data, just the remote access to the .exe.

I posted in this forum as I feel this is security related. Mods move if need be.

I'm looking for a web based (preferably PHP) change log program. It should do the following:

1. Be simple!
2. Allow people to enter descriptions of basic system changes
3. Changes should have categories by systems and can be filtered as such.
4. Time stamp the actions and have a "master display" where all changes can be viewed
5. LDAP authentication would be nice.

Does such a thing exist? My goggling has failed due to "change log" being such a popular term.

Hello,

Attempts to install Pale Moon offline installer from any folder gives this error message

There are no applocker rules.
There are no software restriction policies or software settings.

Attempts to install Pale Moon using the web installer from any folder, as an adminstrator, gives rise to this error message

Note; as mentioned above, I am running 64 bit win7 ultimate on an i7 machine.

Has anyone any idea how to make it possible to install these softwares? Other apps I have installed have not met with this kind of problem. It's almost as if *something* on the machine doesn't want another browser installed.

A user has resized a window within a hosted web application to the point where it is exactly OK/too small, meaning it flickers back and forth between having scroll bars and not. While it is in this state, it essentially freezes out any other commands in the window or ability to resize it. Are there any ways to interupt this, delete application window size preferences or other ideas? I know this is data that is stored locally as I can execute the same functions on another PC sucessfully. This is viewing of a web hosted PC based medical application by a standard PC running Windows 7, IE9. Is there a way to delete user preferences for the application so it will default to orginal window sizing?

Thanks!

As a workaround, you could try a free program I use myself to automatically resize your different applications. I know how annoying this can be, in my case, especially for Internet Explorer.

For the pharmacy I have made an application to support a drug preparation. This application is used in public pharmacies as well as in hospitals and industry.
This is a web-based application. So the installation has been done on the server with a configuration within IIS.
The clients start the application in InternetExplorer.
Why InternetExplorer? Because the client's preparation protocols, raw materials need to be weighed and labels must be printed. Hereby I use self-programmed ActiveX controls. And other browsers do not support ActiveX controls.
The web-based application is generally found to be good.
As Edge is increasingly "pushing", InternetExplorer seems to be the cornerstone, as well as the application described above.
My questions are now:
- How long are web-based applications still supported?
- Will Edge support ActiveX controls in the future?
- Is there an alternative?
I would appreciate if there were sound answers to the above questions.
Sincerely,
Wim

I have a web based application and want it to port it on Windows Vista . What are the procedures I must follow to check for its compliance on safe deployment on Vista?

Answer:Web Based Application Compliance Testing

Let's see. I have no clue, but if I think about it, it must be:
Does your web server software work properly in Vista?
Which flavor of Vista do you plan on using?
Do you have the hardware to support it?
Have you checked into any of the documentation?
If you have checked into the documentation, promptly ignore it, set up your own test box, and see how things shake out. If what you find out on your own correlates with the documentation, then you might start to have some confidence.

That's where I would start if it were me. Essentially, a web service comes down to the web-server software, some sort of a middle tier, and I would imagine some sort of database. Are they compatible with Vista?

Hi,

Could anyone tell me which of the many languages I should/could use to develop a browser based application meant to support database functions (store/retreival to local disk of user inputs) and that could read and send data off the host PC serial port. I'm not looking for client/server stuff, just a plain browser based application running on a local machine for accessing its local serial port and sending/storing data to or from it. I could do it using WinAPI or MFC but I would prefer to have the familiar web based application instead.

I'm not familiar with ASP.NET, PHP, XML, SQL etc... so I wonder if any of them could dot the job ??

Thanks in advance.

Hi, I want to assign a custom icon to every file type no matter what the associated app is. I can change individual default icons, but they get overwritten by the application icon. Is it possible to do this :

And if so, how ? (I want to keep the file associations: .css and .txt are still getting open by Sublime, .ini by WordPad and so on ...)

Thanks.

Answer:Change Icons based on extension only, not the associated application.

The following Microsoft Dev Centre page explains how this can be done via the Registry. (Note: I have not tested this myself in Windows 10)

Are there any utilities that can adjust the volume control based on the time of day?

If I turn the PC on before work at 5am, I don't want it loud. If the wife or kids use the PC the volume control could be at any setting.

Basically I want to be able to tell the computer...

... at 9am, put the system volume at 80%
... at 10pm, put the system volume at 60%
... at midnight, put the system volume at 40%

Can volume be controlled from the command line? I could use the task scheduler to do this if so.

Thanks!

Answer:Volume control based on time of day?

Have a look at Nircommand NirCmd - Windows command line tool this has programmable volume control. it should be possible to set up tasks to perform the changes you need at a set time using the task scheduler ( set task to run at a set time and to run as soon as possible after the time to ensure it always runs .

Hi,

I have two users in my window 7
- userA (admin account)
- userB (general user)

I tried to limit the userB to open specific window application (I.e. win media player) by using userA to apply the follow setting:

How do I allow Windows 7 users to run only specific applications? | TechRepublic

However, after applying the setting, both userA and userB only allow to open the specific application i.e. win media player, but not other program.

Even though the userA is admin, it seems it lose all the adm right, even can't open the cmd

Could anyone help me to allow userA to open all window program?

Thanks!

Answer:Adm can't open window application after applying the group policy

Welcome to the Seven Forums.

Were you able to undo the group policy restriction? So you have control of the computer again - right?

Windows Parental Controls might work for you, except those controls allow Internet Explorer and the Windows (file) Explorer to always run (among other things). Here is a tutorial for Parental Controls - Setup and Use

I like the feature Kaspersky has that allows you to see installed programs and trusted status. Unfortunately, I prefer ESET instead of Kapsersky for my AV. I don't think ESET has a good application manager (a way to view installed .exe, .dll, ...etc. in one list and their reputation status). Is there another program out there that can do a similar job?

I know the "add the administrators security group to roaming user profiles" exists, but for some reason I can't get it to work. The explanation says the policy needs to be set on the client and not the server, so i created and linked the policy to the OU with the workstation that'll ultimately house the roaming user profile. The problem is this doesnt work. I tried linking it to the server as well, but the policy had the same affect. Ultimately I gave domain admins full permission over the shared profile folder and allowed the security to be inherrited (which worked), but I still cant figure why the policy doesnt work. If anyone can tell me how I can get this to work Id appreciate it.

Thanks

Answer:Grant Admins Full Control Policy

Sounds like you have the GPO linked correctly. Your problem is most likely that you expect it to apply to profiles that are already created, which is not the case. This policy will only apply to new users with romaing profiles or those that you're just giving roaming profiles.

HI There,

I'm looking for a simple windows service that I can schedule to run that will do the following:

1.  Search a .log file for a given phrase - "fail" for example.
2.  If this is found, send an email and alert (screen popup) to the administrators.

I may need to resort to a batch file do this, but I hope was hoping something already existed and I could have this up and running very quickly.

Please let me know if you know of anything that fits the bill.

Thanks.

Answer:Looking for an application that searches in a file and emails based on finding

This is a simple batch file if you have an e-mailer that lets you send from the command line.  I haven't tried this in ages on Windows, so I don't know which one(s) might be available.

You should take a look at the post, How to create a command-line toolkit for Windows, on these very forums, paying special attention to the "grep" command that's part of UnixUtils.  Grep allows you to do the kind of search for text content you're seeking with ease.  You can then either query the status code returned after the command or redirect the output of the command to a file, and check that its size is not 0 bytes, to determine whether it found what you're looking for.  A simple 'if' construction afterward to trigger the e-mail to be sent and you're done.

You may prefer to go with installing Cygwin rather than the UnixUtils if you want something more current and want to have a more extensive set of Unix commands available to you under Windows.

Hi All,

Im trying to install AT&T application which is a profile based application. Means it installs in the user profile directly instead of other location.

My Problem is user dont have the admin access, either i need to use my ID or administrator ID. Which installs application into Appdata\Local folder which wont be accessible by other users.
How to i enable the application for other users as well without providing admin access

Answer:Installing profile based application in other users folder

What ATT app is this? If it's for accessing the internet then that doesn't require any installed program, just plug in the wire or access wireless signal via icon in SYstem Tray. Any installed program beyond this for this purpose is bloatware.

But once we know what the program is for exactly we can help you better.

Kaspersky's Trusted Application Mode (TAM) at maximum settings will protect the system.

Technical infos:

Basically,

Trusted Application Mode performs a system scan and, after a user review of the scan results, "white-lists" (= Allows) only those applications and scripts on the system that are included in the Kaspersky databases or approved by the user.

Any unknown files are by default blocked by TAM from start-up unless the user creates an exception allowing the file to run. In other words, TAM "black-lists" all unknown files except unrecognized system critical files (which require user verification and permission to run).

For best security...

The Trusted Application Mode scan must be run on a clean\dis-infected system; a completely clean system is critical for default-deny to work. A complete PC reset is the most reliable method to ensure an absolutely clean system. Then install Kaspersky and enable TAM.

The user must carefully review the TAM scan results to confirm no unwanted\malicious files\scripts are allowed on system.
User must configure Application Control, after the TAM scan, with the following settings:

Automatically move unknown applications to "Untrusted."
Dis-able "Trust digitally singed applications."
Dis-able "Load rules for applications from Kaspersky Security Network (KSN)."
System "Lock-Down":

Using the above settings will block the installation\execution of any file\script - Trust... Read more

Will Kaspersky block everything if I disable trust digitally signed applications? I have run all my applications all are trusted in Virus Total, but I had to add Samsung (god knows why!) portable SSD applications and Tweaking.com Windows repair. What I did find funny, on my old laptop Kaspersky blocked a few files from Office 365. I have gone back to Kaspersky on my new laptop, it kept blocking the NHS software I had to install, plus any Windows Metro app I brought.

I'm missing the Control Panel item under the Administrative Templates section of group policy editor.

I'm running on a fresh installation right out the box Windows 8.1 on a laptop and at first, gpedit.msc wasn't found so I had to install that and after installing that, some items are missing.

I've tried to running sfc /scannow and when it finished it just says "Windows Resource protection found corrupt files but was unable to fix some of them"

How do I get back the Control Panel template in the group policy editor? Thanks in advance.

Run-

Dism /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth

in admin cmd prompt & restart, then run sfc again.

Read your cbs log & search for - cannot - using Find under Edit tab in Notepad.
If unfixable files are .json files ignore them.

I don't want any standard user to run any application expect those which are already installed, so I created a path rule in software restriction policy and disallowed all applications (.exe, .msi & .msp) except those which are present in windows &
program files folder. But problem is that some applications (like Matlab) require access to
PROGRAM DATA (like Java) and APP DATA FOLDER which contain many executables. If I allow those folders, standard users are able to copy any portable application into those folder & run it from there. That means users are
able to write into those folders.
However, I can create path rule for all executables present in those folders and allow them, but they too many of them, so its not convenient to create rules one by one.
Also I have personal folder in Local Drive (D) which contains some useful portable applications, so I want to allow that folder and at same time make it write protected so that standard user cannot copy any other application and run it at their own will.
Any solution?

Policeman is a new add-on for Firefox that is very similar to RequestPolicy. It allows you to create temporary or permanent rules that determine which contents are allowed to be loaded on or from select domain names.

The core difference to RequestPolicy is that it enables you to do so based on content types. If you don't want images or frames loaded on a domain name for instance, you can create a rule to prevent that from happening.

I ran combo fix before doing my research - SORRY SORRY!!!! Can anyone help me with this issue. Now I cannot open explorer, kaspersky, control panel etc. I am using Chrome browser on Windows 7. When the combofix ran it did indicate that it set a restore point.

Prior to running Combofix the system had been running slow and I had uninstalled a couple of programs that appeared to help but then ran across a posting of combofix which I thought would be another added measure of cleanup.

I cannot install and run the FRST logs because after downloading the exe file the run box will not open nor am I able to open explorer to run the file.

Thank you,

Lemmie guess, you do have full images of your OS partition, correct? After a local computer shop ran ComboFix and what else, I had to do a restore to a previous OS partition to fix the fix.

I have run into Windows XP Software Restriction Policies blocking installations twice in the last day. The policies are blocking executables running from Application Data folders. You can see the blocking of the installation of Dashlane Premium. Last night another program's auto-update function was blocked with the same error message.

I don't know why these programs are putting executables in Application Data folders. Is there any potential harm in it? I understand that Software Restriction Policies can be altered. Any reason not to save myself from this nuisance by allowing launches from Application Data folders?

Answer:Application Data folders subject to Software Restriction Policy blocking executables--necessary?

As far as I know, AppData is used for the local user data, for updates and settings.

For example, when you are asked "Install for All users or Current user":

Current User will use AppData folder.
All Users will use Program Files.
What's in the hidden Windows AppData Folder, and how to find it if you need it
Store and retrieve settings and other app data

Correct if wrong.

Hello guys

I am completely new to this type of forum. I just want to say what a great service you guys are doing and that I hope you will be able to assist me.

Firstly please be aware that I'm unable to run the dds.com application for you to get the required logs. I couldn't copy it in the normal running mode of windows. I had to copy it in safe mode then try to run it in normal mode. When I did so I go a message saying that "DDS is already running" even though I had just started up my machine.

Anyways here is description of my operating environment before I go onto describing the issues that I'm facing.

Virtual Server Hypervisor: VMware ESXi 5.1
Operating System: Windows Server 2008 Enterprise edition 32bit
Roles: Active Directory,DHCP, DNS, File and Print Server, Group Policy Management, Web Server IIS (not setup by me)
AV: Symantec Endpoint Protection

Problem
I seem to have lost control of my server. I cant run, copy, move or delete files on my server. When I do try I get a the following error "An unexpected error is preventing the operation ... The latest version of the Zeus do-it-yourself crimeware kit goes to great lengths to thwart would-be pirates by introducing a hardware-based product activation scheme similar to what's found in Microsoft Windows.
The newest version with bare-bones capabilities starts at $4,000 and additional features can fetch as much as $10,000. The new feature is designed to prevent what Microsoft refers to as "casual copying" by ensuring that only one computer can run a licensed version of the program. After it is installed, users must obtain a key that's good for just that one machine.
"This is the first time we have seen this level of control for malware," according to an analysis of the latest Zeus version published this week by SecureWorks.

The hardware-based licensing system isn't the only page Zeus creators have borrowed from Microsoft. They've also pushed out multiple flavors of the package that vary in price depending on the capabilities it offers. Just as Windows users can choose between the lower-priced Windows 7 Starter or the more costly Windows 7 Business, bot masters have multiple options for Zeus.
For a mere $500 more, users can get a Zeus module that will allow them to received pilfered data in real time using the Jabber instant messaging client. A module that grabs data out of fields typed into Firefox fetches an extra $2,000, and a virtual network computing module that allows users to establish a fully functioning connection to an infected computer ... Just this morning I powered on the laptop to find that the left side of the keyboard was getting very hot. I couldn't feel any air coming out of the fan exhaust. The computer then froze after 1-2 minutes of boot. I found that the fan only spins up during system startup (BIOS post) and slows down to a stop while booting windows 7. I discovered a utility called Thinkpad Fan Control to manually control the fan speed and have set it up with startup parameters to automatically go into manual mode. In this utility, I see that all the thermal sensors are showing 0 degrees, there is also a switch that controls the display of active and inactive thermal sensors. When I change the radio button to active, I see no sensors listed in the window, when I change it to show 'all', I see all of the ones as below: 1 CPU n/a2 aps n/a3 crd n/a4 gpu n/a5 no5 n/a6 x7d n/a7 bat n/a8 x7f n/a9 bus n/a10 pci n/a11 pwr n/a12 xc3 n/a But none of them have show any temperature readings. Is a BIOS update necessary? Has anyone else experienced this before? See pic here: http://img152.imageshack.us/img152/7317/128201130938pm.png

Answer:X201 - All thermal Sensors have become 'inactive' based on Thinkpad Fan Control

X201_USER there are quite a few people who are experiencing sudden system shutdowns on the X201 unit it could be unrelated but you never know. I have had a feeling for quite a while now that it is a heat related issue causing the shut downs question is most system shutdowns due to this often leave a system error thermal event ? But if the sensors in the computer are not working then Im left wondering if the computer would even know why it shut down. Can you tell me has it ever just shut down or does it ever report a themal event as a cause for the freezing (you may need to check event manager in the administrator tools) In regards to your issue please call technical support and log a warranty call make sure to record the job referance number and who you spoke to the time and date of the call.

.The traditional approach to protection: Default Allow
.Default Deny mode

Introduction
Corporate network security is one of the most pressing issues for companies today. Malicious programs can cause substantial harm to a business, and a firm?s reputation is not the least of its worries. Companies specializing in IT security offer a variety of costly solutions, although in many cases, installing these solutions can actually lead to a steep increase in network maintenance costs. However, traditional security solutions cannot always provide guaranteed protection against unknown threats ? especially when it comes to targeted attacks.

This article addresses an alternative approach to protecting corporate networks: the Whitelist Security Approach.

This approach continues the developments in launch control technologies (otherwise known as Application Control) which add Default Deny mode support and innovative new whitelisting technologies, or Dynamic Whitelist.

At Kaspersky Lab, we believe the Whitelist Security Approach is one of the key elements of protection for corporate networks of the future. Products that use this approach are capable not only of protecting a network against unknown threats but also offer netwo... Read more

.New developments in Application Control

.From theory to practice: Kaspersky Lab?s Endpoint 10
.Conclusion

It?s brilliant ? but is it user-friendly?

The idea behind Default Deny is very simple and logical. However, until now this approach was focused exclusively on a very narrow target audience. This was primarily because of the technical challenges arising on the road toward developing a solution that would be appropriate for broad use, and without a number of critical limitations.

Dynamic Whitelist. Kaspersky Lab currently works with several hundred international partners and tens of millions of participants in the Kaspersky Security Network global data network, in addition to an extensive network of automated search agents. Combined, these components provide continuous updating of Kaspersky Lab?s dynamic knowledge bases, with an average of over one million new files per day.
The quality of Kaspersky Lab?s Dynamic Whitelist was proven in an independent test conducted by West Coast Labs. The study showed that Kaspersky Lab?s database contains data on 94% of all clean software released around the world.
It is necessary to carefully control all of the programs entered into the Dynamic Whitelist, and most importantly to keep its reputation up to date. A program classified as ?clean? today can, after more careful analysis, turn out to be a carrier of threatening malicious code t... Read more

I currently have my screen resolution set to 1680x1050. I would like to run certain applications such as Mozilla Firefox in a maximum resolution of 1280x'1050' and Microsoft Word at 1024x'1050'. (I don't like to do it manually everytime, because I 'automatically' keep clicking on the 'Maximize' button :P)

I was just wondering if there is an application out there, which makes this possible?

Full question: How to add a new/duplicate volume control in the 'Volume mixer' (aka application specific volume control) in windows 7? specifically, how to add another duplicate chrome to control different sounds in different tabs.

example: opening 2 tabs: 1 youtube, 1 hulu in chrome and having two 'Google Chrome' applications in volume control so I can mute one and keep the other one still playing with sound.

I've done it before, but I'm not sure HOW I did it, I just know its possible. Sometimes when i open another video it just automatically does it, and sometimes it doesn't.

I just want to know if there's a specific way to do it, unless its just a bug then I guess I'm just screwed and have to install another chrome.

Answer:how to duplicate application in volume control

Don't think there's a way to 'duplicate' the volume controls. Sometimes when you mute videos and start another 1, the browser saves the setting so the 2nd stream auto mutes, may be this what you did?

You can also check out this addon Flashblock, it blocks the (flash) content from automatically streaming.

Recently, while surfing the net, I discovered that a program called "curb send.exe" was prompted to run. Since I have Comodo Antivirus, I used the HIPS Application control to block it. Now, every time i start up the computer, the application control alert pops up every few seconds. When i allow curb send to run, i get continuous pop ups. I am trying to open the add/remove icon in control panel and keep receiving message fpqx.exe not found cannot open application. I tried opening several other icons on this particular computer in control panel and get the same message. The computer uses OSWindows 98.

Answer:application message in control panel

I've no idea what fpqx.exe is, can't find anything on google search about it . . .

but it sounds like a virus to me.

Make sure you've got the latest definitions for your A-V software
and run a full virus scan.
Better still, run an online scan at one of these places:

http://housecall.trendmicro.com/
http://www.pandasoftware.com/activescan/com/

It sounds as though your registry has been modified so that *.cpl files open with fpqx.exe instead of rundll32.exe

Folder Options -> File Types tab -> CPL (Control Panel Extension)

I'm not sure what the default command line is in Win98, but in WinXP it's:

rundll32.exe shell32.dll,Control_RunDLL %1,%*

Hopefully, a Win98 user will come along and tell you what the correct Win98 command line is. Then you can edit the entry yourself and the problem will be fixed

Hello, I am looking for a program that would allow me to adjust the volume of different applications (and master) using hotkeys (+mouse wheel) in Windows XP.A few programs come close, but either don't have application control or don't have hot-keys. If anybody knows of such a program please share,Thank you!

Answer:Per application volume control in WIndows XP

Unless the programs you're using have their own volume controls, this isn't possible, except as a master volume control which Windows already has.

I would start with the graphics driver
Go to device manager, make sure that the graphics driver is up to date and that no yellow markers are anywhere to be seen.
Make sure the the tree, in the left panel, is not open anywhere and open tree indicates a problem in that area.

I am trying to help someone with a Win XP computer. They are trying to set it up for basic internet/skype functionality but also wants parental controls in place. She uses FireFox and from my preliminary research there appears to be no built in parental control options. It looks like there are quite a few extensions available to accomplish this but i think the extensions can be easily removed/disabled by any user (without Administrator control). I was wondering what steps i could take on XP to require the Admin's approval to remove/disable extensions in FF or to uninstall FF or other applications. Also i want it to require the admin's PW if someone wants to install any applications. Does XP offer anything for this?

Answer:Limit Application Control to non-Admin

Create a limited account that the children must log into. The Admin user would have to approve of any software or updates to be performed. Setup Parental Controls
Then setup Parental Controls on Firefox

a detail discription would help me.
thanks

Answer:VB 6 Database application login control

Create a form with two entry fields -- one for the user name and one for the password. Don't make it the startup form but instead show it from the Form_Load event procedure in your main form. Capture the user name and password and return it to the frmMain.Tag property. Once you're back to the main form, login in to the database using the supplied credentials.

I am trying to provide an interface to control an application I created (3 perl processes).

I can start them from batch file (start /B), but once I do that I don't know how to identify them to either verify they are running or terminate them (killtask - but it wants PID or image, which in my case is perl - not well qualified enough to go killing processes)

Is there a way that I can start processes, verify they are running and terminate them from batch files?

Answer:Automated control of application tasks

There is probably a perl process that can handle this, but I have no idea if there is or how to call it.

I am using Zone Alarm Free Antivirus plus Firewall version 12,0,104,000
There are 870 programmes secured in the Application Control, some appear more than once, and I am not sure which of the multiple entries to remove. Also there is an entry...
Advanced Control Enable Microsoft Catalogue Utilization what is this?
Also under OS Firewall there is "enable OS Firewall" and it is ticked, do I need this enabled?
Should I be sunning the OS firewall and ZoneAlarm?
Are all these enteries slowing down ZoneAlarm?

Answer:Zone Alarm- Application Control

What OS are you running; for Win7 and Win8/8.1 you are best to use the built in Windows firewall.
You should not run more than one firewall; therefore either the OS one or ZoneAlarm in your case.
As far as removing the multiple entries, I personally would not do so as there are various components to individual programs.
From: ZoneAlarm Forums :
"Enable Microsoft Catalog Utilization
When enabled, prevents alerts for programs that are cataloged by Windows as known and trustworthy. Enabled by default. (Depending on your settings, ZoneAlarm may still alert you about such programs if they attempt to act as a server outside your Trusted Zone.) "
If you decide to uninstall ZoneAlrm then ZoneAlarm Uninstall 12.0.118.000 Tool
