Ethernet won't connect to router, wifi works fine

Question: Ethernet won't connect to router, wifi works fine

I have recently bought a router, the Fritz.Box Home Server 1&1 VDSL. I have set it up via wifi and can connect to the internet without a problem.
However, I would like to connect my PC to the router via LAN.
When I put the LAN cable into my PC and the router, both my PC and my router react and tell me there is a connection but they do not recognize each other. The router says there is something in LAN1 and the PC says there is a LAN cable without a connection. I cannot access the router via LAN, only via wifi.
My PC uses the Killer Network 2200e driver, I tried removing it and then manually adding it again, it did not work. My IPv4 settings seem fine, too, I have no idea what to do now.

Preferred Solution: Ethernet won't connect to router, wifi works fine

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Answer: Ethernet won't connect to router, wifi works fine

and welcome to the Forum

Lets take a peek at your network environment:

First:

Power Cycle everything . . Turn off the Modem, router and all pc's . . turn on the Modem and wait a few minutes for the lights to stabilize . . then turn on the router, then one pc at a time. See if you connect to the internet.

Then: check your browser's settings, remove any proxy settings if found, here's how

Then:

with the pc connected to the router, Click on Start . . Run . . type CMD

At the > prompt type or copy and paste the following command:

ipconfig/all > 0 & notepad 0

and press enter.

Come back here and Paste the results in a message.

If you are on a machine with no network connection, use a floppy, USB drive, or a CD-R disk to transfer a text file with the information to allow pasting it here.

Hi guys - setting up computers in my new home and have got the wifi working fine with my BT Home Hub router (works for laptops, mobile devices etc)
Have been trying to connect via Ethernet for a laptop and home pc for a faster/more reliable connection but it doesn't seem to be working.

When plugged in the Network and Sharing Centre simply displays the loading blue circle with 'identifying' but no network access. When clicking on the Local Area Connection Status both IPv4 and IPv6 connectivity state no network access, but I can't seem to find any hardware problems on the laptop. The same issue occurs for other laptops at home and I know my laptop works with Ethernet at work.

Running ipconfig/all shows that DHCP is enabled (I checked this on the properties tab for the IPvs), autoconfiguration is enabled. I can add in a copy and paste of the whole ipconfig/all if that's helpful - 'media disconnected' shows for Tunnel adapters but I don't really understand what they are...

If anyone could help at all I'd be really grateful !

Answer:Cannot connect via Ethernet to BTHub3 Wireless Router - but wifi works

Could be that the router is only set to wifi.
go to your router setting page open it (192.168.0.1) check the settings there,
password is probably admin if you havn't changed it, please do change it if you havn't.

Or plan B reset the router

Hi

I have a ZyXEL 600 wireless router - it has worked without issues for years.

However yesterday evening my wireless router suddenly stopped broadcasting a signal.

2 different PC's and a wifi dongle attached to our TV were suddenly all unable to find my network.

The WLAN light on the router was still lit up. I connected my Acer Aspire 5742Z laptop to the router via an ethernet cable and it worked fine. I connected to the router and it said there were no errors.

I phoned ZyXEL support this morning and they dialled in, confirmed the router was reporting it was working. They installed inSSIDer on my PC and verified no signal was being picked up - but other local wireless networks were being picked up.

They suggested buying another modem as it was very old and could have just reached the end of its life.

So I bought a brand new Sitecom 300N x2 modem this morning, connected it up and have the exact same problem. All the right lights are on the modem (solid WLAN, DSL and Internet lights), I can connect via an ethernet cable but none of my devices can find a the wireless browser (but can find other networks and connect to them).

I've spent hours on the phone today to various tech people and gone through channel switching, changing encryption etc but nothing has worked. The router is sat in the same place it has been for the last 3 years and the laptop is inches from it but still no joy.

As far as I can see I've ruled out:

Hi, I am currently using the University campus wifi which works fine, but when I try to connect to it via ethernet, it always comes up with "no internet access" despite the wifi working fine. If I go onto network and sharing centre, the ethernet is sending bytes but only receiving very few every so often. I am using windows ten, please feel free to ask for more information, thanks for helping

So here is my story. A couple days ago I awoke to having no internet access over any devices connected through Ethernet or Wifi. My first thought was it was just a fluke and to power cycle my router and modem. After doing so I still got nothing. Called up my ISP thinking that the internet might be down due to a winter storm we had that night. They said that it wasn't. They sent signals to my modem and everything appeared to be working properly.

My equipment then:

Arris SB6141
Asus RT-AC3200

So I decided to make a run to Best Buy (not my first choice but convenient) to pick up a new cable modem. Purchased a Arris SB6190. Got it home, called up ISP (Spectrum) and had them provision it. Everything went smooth. Well now I was getting internet but only over WiFi. So now I'm thinking that my router bit the dust. Took another trip to Best Buy and purchased a Linksys EA9500 router. Got home, hooked it all up, same exact thing. Wifi works but everything connected through Ethernet has no connection.

I have a Win 7 system. Everything was working, until a few days ago, and then the Ethernet connection stopped. The activity LEDs work, but the Ethernet will not connect. The Wifi works fine through the same router as the Ethernet is plugged into.

Here is what I did so far.Rebooted PC (full power cycle)
Rebooted router
MSCONFIG to disable all unknown services and apps
Replaced Ethernet cable
Tried a different port
Confirmed Ethernet driver is latest version
Deleted Ethernet driver anyway and reinstalled
Reset IP Stack
Set TCP/IPv4 to static IP and defined the DNS server
Confirmed the adapter's advanced settings were correct
Connected to a USB Ethernet adapter that I know works (and has worked before on this PC)

Nothing I did in the above list worked - Ethernet does not connect. The activity LEDs are working. The Network Connections shows a plugged-in Ethernet as an Unidentified Network.

Here is the IPCONFIG/ALL

My PC with windows 7 is the only computer with issues in the house. Ethernet works perfectly but wifi doesn't even when I don't have the ethernet hooked up. The wifi says it is connected but browsers, steam, and Itunes don't work. I have Bitdefender A/V and already tried uninstalling it, no change. I also uninstalled steam and Itunes with still no change. I even uninstalled and reinstalled the drivers for the wireless adapter. I tried looking and I don't recall downloading or installing anything around the time the problem started. Before I try replacing the adapter itself, I was hoping for help here since I saw a very similar problem in another thread.

Have an Asus ultrabook laptop with an Atheros 9485WB-EB wifi/BT adapter. When I'm away from home, it works perfectly. At home, it sees our home network but refuses to connect to it - just get a cannot connect error.

It used to work fine, and then it's gradually gotten worse. At first rebooting the laptop would make it work for a while, then that quit working. Now it's just non-fuctional at home.

Home wifi works fine with other devices as well, and if I plug a USB wifi adapter into the laptop that works too.

Home router is (I forget the model, have to look when I get home) running dd-wrt. Rebooting the router doesn't fix the problem.

Any idea what would make it quit? No setting have been changed on the router during all this.

Hello, I've been having this issue recently. On my laptop, the wifi works fine, and then a little while later, it can't connect at all (it looks like it's connected, then disconnects, and then tries connect again, etc). All the other devices connected to the router is fine, only mine is the problem. I tried looking at device manager, the Intel Centrino Advanced-N 6235 is enabled, updated, and in the properties, it says that the device is working properly.

The problem does go away temporarily when I turn off the router, wait a little, and then turn it back on, but soon afterwards, I continue to have connecting issues.

Here's the info

1. Is this a wired or wireless connection issue?
Wireless

2. Who is your Internet Service Provider (ISP)?
Verizon

3. What type of Broadband connection are you using?
Fios

4. What is the exact Make and Model of your Modem, Router or Modem/Router Combo - Linksys, D-Link, Netgear, TP-LINK, etc.
Router: Actiontec? Not totally sure

5. What is the Name of the Anti-Virus, Security or Firewall Software installed from the problematic
Avast

Welcome to Seven Forums,

Thanks for using the basic requirements, all info provided were very helpful. Your Xirrus capture looks good, no issue there, however, I see that in your wireless connection you're using Public DNS, why not change the DNS'es to auto same as your LAN DNS Servers . . . . . . . . . . . : 192.168.1.1. You'll have to click on Obtain DNS address automatically....Please follow this Tutorial.
http://windows.microsoft.com/en-us/w...cp-ip-settings

Also, it's best to use WPA2 with AES encryption for a better secured network, you're currently using WEP.

I'm a new Plusnet customer and I cannot connect to the internet using wifi I just get a page saying the broadband is down. So I tried using an ethernet cable and after manually setting this up I can use the internet. I accidentally disconnected the cable yesterday but the internet didn't fault, it's now working wirelessly. I can connect to the wifi using my mobile and iPad but I cannot connect to the internet. A new router has been sent and the problem still persists, a bt engineer has also visited but cannot find a solution.

Can anybody please help me?

Answer:I can't connect to wifi but connect with an Ethernet cable works, even when it isn't plugged in

It gets confusing as to which device is being used so as a guideline
disable one or the other (wifi vs wired) and don't allow both to be active at the same time. Technically, which ever device gets an IP address from your router will become the gateway to your ISP - - ignoring the connectivity of the second device to access your router.

With a laptop, we just toggle the keyboard to enable/disable wifi and the wired is easy - - just pull the cable out.

create a desktop shortcut to \windows\system32\devmgmt.msc
to control the devices (needs admin access)
expand [+] network adapters and you'll see the list
mine are

Dell Wireless 1502 ....
Realtek PCIe FE Family Controller
Just right-click->disable and you can always right-click->enable

The png posted shows both are enabled and the wired has the gateway.
If the cable is disconnected, this is quite impossible.

SO, first control which device is to be used and then make the connection.

A few days ago my desktop booted up very slowly and I was not able to connect to any webpages or any programs which use the internet. I just left it to sit for a few days and tried to boot it up again today, it still booted rediculously slow (took about 10 minutes) but it's still not working so I figured I'd register here and ask for some help. The router which I have connected to my desktop's modem is used to give internet to my laptop is still working fine (I'm posting this from my laptop). I've tried to do a system restore on my desktop, but the restores get an error and don't work. Also when i do the system restores, my desktop icons wont load so i have to end the explorer.exe process and then run the process again, after which all the icons show. (this only happens after I system restore). Another thing that is weird is that I can still connect to AIM (the instant messanger) on my desktop, but nothing else. Not sure what to do at this point, hopefully you guys can help.

I have a Dell Studio 17 with Vista and Wifi capability. I've had the computer for a year and a half, and I've never had a major problem with wireless connection before. Any problem has been purely because of a low connection strength or because I was in a classroom (I'm a college student) in which multiple people were trying to connect at once. Eventually it always worked.

I was home for the weekend and connected to my primary wireless connection and all of a sudden I lost connection and could not reconnect.

I tried restarting and shutting off both the computer and wireless router. I tried resetting the wireless router. I tried turning on and off the Wifi button on my computer. Still cannot connect.

I plugged in an ethernet cable into my internet directly from the router and it runs fine (that is how I am on the internet on my laptop at the moment).

I will not always have access to an ethernet cable when I go back to school later today and I have a project I need to research so I'm kind of in a rush to get this figured out. Also it's just so much easier connecting wireless and obviously I'd like this fixed.

Anyway, I read up on other people's similar problem and I don't know if I changed something or messed up, but now whenever i click to view Wireless Connections the router for my house has a red x next to it and says "The settings saved on this computer for the network do not match the requirements of the network."

I have a slightly different setup so I'm hoping somebody might have some suggestions on what I can try.

I have Comcast Xfinity Internet and a Motorola SB6121 model - have all worked great for years no problems.

I have the modem in my garage with a wifi router and a router for various rooms in my house. My home computer is in an office and previously I had a wired connection that worked great.

I changed wifi router to a new Netgear and the internet connection from the modem is working, the wifi is working, but my home computers ethernet connection will no longer connect...

Any thoughts on what to try other than powering off and on model / routers / computer which I have tried?

Mike

Answer:Changed wifi router, now ethernet doesnt connect - Win 8.1

You can only have one router on your network. For extending coverage, you use Access Points

As for the Ethernet problem, go back and double check your connections to the router.

If you cascaded routers in what are called "Edge Routers". Changing your first router, without any changes on the others can be why you only have a connection to one router and not out to the Internet.

It is really easier to show someone what they did wrong, then explain on a forum.

I would like to connect my USB WIFI dongle directly to my wired router, this would enable me to have wifi access without having my PC switched on all the time, is this possible and if so what kind of adapter do I need? I think I need USB A Female to Ethernet RJ45 Male Router Adapter does anyone know if this is correct?

Answer:Connect USB WIFI dongle to Ethernet Port on WIRED Router

Would it not be easier to just get a wireless router? If you're with any of the main companies, they will probably give you one if you ask (and if they don't, threaten to leave and then they probably will!).

Whenever I unplug from the router and go upstairs, I can't connect to my wi-fi. The problem also persists downstairs unless I am connected by ethernet. It's been happening for about 2 days. At first the wi-fi would jump in and out randomly and quickly but now it simply wont connect. Is it a virus or how can I fix it?

Answer:Wifi doesn't connect unless directly connected to router by ethernet cable

You might just need to restart your router / WiFI AP to resolve that issue.

Hi.A bit strange problem has occurred on my Y550.When trying to connect y550 to a D-Link DIR-301 router (whether via Ethernet or WiFi), the connection on router crashes and becomes invisible to other computers for a short period of time. Then connection stands up but overtime y550 attempts to get through it crashes over and over again.Y550 connects to router (sometimes there is access to the Internet - sometimes connection is limited) but only for a few seconds before connections crashes. It works fine on any other router I've been using e.g.. Asus.At first I thought this problem was caused by assigning dynamic IP but after setting up it to static values the problem still occurred. I have checked any possible issues with power management (on network adapters, power plan, with and without battery). Drivers update also did not bring any effects.Ip config shows nothing, as if it was not connected (I called it during that short period when y550 was connected)Eventually I found out that connection works fine in Safe Mode so this must be some software/driver issue.I've used one key recovery and brought y550 to it;s original fresh out-of-the-box state and problem still occurs (even after updating drivers again. No drivers available via lenovo.com helps.I've read nearly 3/4 of the entire Internet seeking for solutions - couldn't' find anything. One step left for me to check is remove Intel software which manages connections.Any ideas guys?

Probably this is something simple in IE7 options/settings but I failed to figure it out.

This is happening on my desktop (am writing this on my laptop). It's failing to connect, with the exception being "secure" sites - https://....

Email is working fine.

Thanks

Hi, this my first time posting and I really would refrain from bothering people if I could, but I've been having this issue with my wireless for the last month so I thought perhaps someone could help.

The OS is a Windows XP home.

I go into IPCONFIG/ALL and it tells me that my wireless is disconnected

I've tried uninstalling and reinstalling the drivers.
I've tried going into the router (it's a NETGEAR MR814) IP, and I've added it to the list of devices that can connect to it, but it's not working. It just... won't work. It's not that there's a security lock on my router because I've disabled it and it still wouldn't work.

So now I'm completely befuddled, and disheartened, and on the verge of just taking apart my machine were it not for the ethernet connection. Can someone please help?

Answer:Ethernet works fine, Not Wireless

First try going into network property and see if you can see it.
If you see something like "Local Area connection 2" with wireless network card, right click on the icon and view available network/connection.
If you see your wireless router setting, highlight and click "Connect".

This time i have installed the drivers which came from the motherboard manufacturer and are the latest. In the Network and Sharing Center, the icon is enabled. It does not show cross sign. I'm sure this has been asked 1000 times but I cannot seem to find my exact issue anywhere. Hopefully this helps myself and anyone who runs into this issue.

To start, I have Windows 7 Professional 64bit. Everything worked 100% fine with absolutly no issue and then.... I moved. Now we have Fios instead of Comcast.

Now to the issue. When I have the ethernet connected I cannot get internet access but I have full network access. I went out and purchased a new wirless card and wirless works just fine. I tested 2 different cables, recrimped both of them and nothing. I have activity on the PC and the Router so I am sure they are good.

I have tried everything I have read online, Updated Realtek Family PCI Ethernet drivers from MSIglobal. Disabled/Enabled. ipconfig /flushdns, /release and /renew. I went as far as Backing up and reformating the Hard Drive and before reinstalling the backup I tested it and nothing. Restored my backup file and yep.. nothing.

Its kind of frustrating. I'm not exactly and expert but i am in no way a novice either. This one has me stumped. Im thinking maybe it is a windows service that is not set to start correctly but I figured I would creat a post while I am at work and maybe have and answer to test before I hunt through the services tonight.

Any advice is greatly appreciated

Thanks

Hi all.
First of all, I want to thank you guys in advance for putting your time and effort to solve my issue. any answer would be grateful to me.

My internet provider is At&t and as I mentioned in the title, wireless internet works perfectly fine, but Ethernet connection doesn't work on my desktop. Currently I am using wireless adapter on my PC, and it works just fine. I tried disabling the wireless connection, resetting the modem, re installing the Ethernet driver and anything I can think of.

The odd thing is that my brother used Ethernet connection just fine with his desktop about three weeks ago, with same router and same cable. So I am assuming that my computer is the one with the problem but I can't figure it out why.

I'm going to try out the different cable tomorrow, but I highly doubt it will fix my problem.

Help me guys. If you need any other information, ask away. I will give it to you as much as I can

Answer:Wireless works fine, Ethernet doesn't

Odds are that the NIC has failed.

Another low possibility (in addition to cable and router LAN port) are the PC's firewall or security suite misconfigured or corrupted.

Another thing to try: in Device Manager right click on the ethernet - Properties - Advanced tab - for the 'Speed & Duplex' property try different values beginning with '100 Mbps full duplex' and '10 Mbps full duplex.'

Earlier my desktop was to b in d same place where the router was der. Everything worked fine. Now I decided to shift my desktop to another room. I have kept the router at the earlier place only. I have brought a 25m long new cat 5 cable. When I connected it to my desktop, the orange led on ethernet port do not light up and the desktop is unable to detect the ethernet cable and hence the internet connection. On the router, a light of ethernet keeps on blinking every 1 second. I was worried whether my ethernet port got fried. So i inserted another ethernet cable, but then the ethernet orange light came and the pc detedted the connection. Therefore I thought the cable might be faulty. Therefore I connected my laptop with that 25m cable. But my laptop detected it and showed the internet connection. But now when i again connect the cable to my desktop, there's no light and the pc does not detect it. However, if i connect the 25m cable to my desktop then during boot the ethernet light on router is stable just as when it is normally connected to the internet. But when i go into windows it starts blinking every 1 second.

My router is MTNL Model No. UT-304R2
Desktop - Asus P7H55, core i5
Laptop- HP 2000
Windows 7 Ultimate on both desktop and laptop.

I have an Ideapad U330 that will not get online using ethernet in windows. Before you ask, no it isnt my router. When I use an Ubuntu bootable disk, the ethernet works fine and I can surf the web without issue. I reformatted and installed windows 7 x86 (It had windows XP previously and the ethernet didnt work there either), installed all the drivers, and updated the BIOS, the ethernet still does not work while the wireless works fine. I thought this was a hardware issue until the ethernet worked with no issue in Ubuntu.

Hello:I've been having an issue with my Dell XPS Desktop (Intel Ethernet Connection I219-V Ethernet card).
When I connect this server to my router by an ethernet cable, all other other computers connected (Hardwired or Wifi connected) disconnect themselves from the internet. I get the same response when I connect to the Wireless Wifi as well.
It happens only with this Desktop running Windows 10.
I was told to change the DNS address to the OPENDNS Addresses - I tried and I had no luck. I do not have the Ethernet card or the Desktop in powersave mode. They do not go to sleep when idle.
Can someone please make any suggestions. Any input from your end would be very much appreciated.

Recently I performed a reinstallation of windows on my laptop. Normally I had no problems with the wireless, but after the reinstallation my laptop refuses to acknowledge that there are wireless networks. When I'm not connected to the internet, it asks to connect using a wire connection only.

I have a Dell Inspiron iM101z running Windows 7 Home Premium, and I downloaded all the drivers for what the Dell website told me my laptop model was, a Dell Inspiron 1121. Attached is a picture showing the oddities of my problem. The icon on the taskbar shows that I have to connect with an ethernet cord; no wireless icon is shown.

If I try to unplug the ethernet cable and connect to the internet, I only get the option to do a broadband connection. Also, once I unplug the cable, I get "no connections available."

Answer:Laptop refuses to detect anything wireless, ethernet works fine

Most likely this is still a driver problem.

Got an issue with using the Ethernet where it would Blue screen my PC. If I use WiFi, it's fine but the moment I use Ethernet it crashes with a paged fault in non paged area BSOD. I have updated drivers, cleared and reupdated drivers to noavail. Also bought a new NIC and cat5 cable and it's still causing stop errors.

Answer:BSOD while plugged into Ethernet fine with WiFi

Crashes point to a problem with your display card and possibly your RAM. I also see Service Pack 1 is not installed, which may be the underlying factor for all the crashes.

I am on a Win 7 based computer. New apt, new internet connection. Old router.
Connects to net fine with an ethernet cable.
Connects to the wifi signal (strong signal) with password authentication BUT no internet access.
All my laptops are experiencing the same issue- so it does not appear to be related to the computer.
I then connected the ethernet cable to a Linksys E2000. Again, good signal, clear connection BUT no internet access.
What can I do??
IPCONFIG/ALL>myTCP.txt did not produce any results in DOS (why??)
Thanks in advance.....

Hi! After moving to a new home, I'm having trouble getting a wired connection working. Same modem and router as the previous home, same PC. Different ISP, but both are Shaw cable re-packagers.

router
CISCO Linksys E900, Factory Reset, with latest firmware 1.0.06
modem
THOMPSON DCM 475

motherboard
SAPPHIRE Pure Black P67 Hydra
USB adapter
USB wifi, Dlink DWA-160
Operating system
Windows 7 64
Ethernet Adapter
Marvell Yukon 88E8057 Family PCI-E Gigabit Ethernet Controller
latest driver version 11.45.4.3

I have only a PC and an android connected, occasionally and android tablet as well.

The PC can connect via wifi, if ethernet is disabled and then modem, router, PC restarted, but I can't seem to figure out a way to get the ethernet connection to work. I've tried DHCP and Static IP configurations, and I've tried connecting the ethernet directly to the modem instead of the router, but to no avail. I believe I've managed at times to access the router from the PC (only with static IP), but never the internet as well. I've tried 3 cat 5 cables as well.

Here are some pictures with more details of my config

I've been banging my head against this for 8+ hours...can anyone see what I'm missing?

Hello,My name is Vladan and I have had a problem occur yesterday. When I plug in my network cable it stops working. My ethernet internet connection status shows that Ipv4 and Ipv6 have "no internet accsess". It's not just my laptop's wired internet that stopped working, it's the whole network I have in my apartment consisting of two more computers who also lost their wired-ethernet internet accsess. I suspect something is wrong with my router since it relays my internet but wireless works fine so I'm stumped. When I plug in my cable it shows limited connectivity.I have tried ipconfig /release - /renew, I have tried netsh winsock reset and netsh int ip reset log.txt I have tried (netsh winsock reset catalog), also I tried (netsh int ipv6 reset reset.log) and it said the following ::::::Resetting Interface, OK!Resetting Neighbor, OK!Resetting Path, OK!Resetting , failed.Accsess is denied.Resetting, OK!Restart the computer to complete this action.::::I don't know what is this "failed and accsess is denied" but it might be the problem.I have rebooted my router several times but also with no results. Answer:Network troubleshoot - Ethernet (wired) stopped working, Wireless works fine.

Did your ISP give you this router such as your leasing it etc? If so contact them for a replacement. If you own this router then I'd try factory reset button to set it back to factory default. If that doesn't cure this then buy a new router. They are pretty cheap these days.Your router could have been hacked, the access denied is strange!

My Y500 decided it couldn't receive internet on any connection today. It would connect to any network but it would say that there was no internet. I plugged my computer directly into the modem with an ethernet cable and it still said there was no internet. My router was sending out 5Ghz wifi fine and I was using several other devices on the network successfully. Any idea what could be wrong? I thought it would be my wireless card, but wouldn't I still be able to receive internet through my ethernet port then? PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE help. I don't want to have to buy a new laptop just because this silly nonsense. Hi All and Merry Christmas!

I've been all over the help boards and MS troubleshooting, but I haven't found anything that addresses this particular issue.

I can connect to the internet fine via Firefox, but when I try via IE7 I get:
"Failed to connect to web-server/proxy-server for bypass transaction (Error 504)". (Sometimes I get a more friendly error page, but of no more help than this.)

I'm on a Dell desktop running Windows XP SP3 and connect via HughesNet satellite. I believe the problem started after my helpdesk at work talked me through setting up VPN connection. VPN worked fine however, which makes this problem odder because work doesn't support Firefox. In any case, I uninstalled VPN. I've also tried connecting in SafeMode - no dice. None of the other suggestions I've seen online have helped either - but I think all of them assume you can't connect to the internet at all.

One thing I've noticed - when I look at my Network Connection settings there are two of them: Local Area Connection and Local Area Connection 2. The first one says "Network cable unplugged" (which of course it isn't or I wouldn't be typing here now), and the other says "Connected." They have different device names as well, the first Intel (R) Pro 1000... and the second one (that works) 3Com EtherLink XL...

Maybe Firefox is using the second one, and IE is trying to use the first one, but I don't... Read more

Answer:Can't connect via IE7, but Firefox works fine

Might be Conficker Worm Virus

Have you checked for the Conficker work virus? I had a customer recently had this problem. IE didn't work but FF did and there were some other issues. The ISP had contacted the customer to say they believed his home network was infected with Conficker and needed to be removed or they were doing to cut him off. So he called me, I checked and yes, it was Conficker.

Here is the link for the company that makes a removal tool for Conficker:

I have an annoying issue with my internet connection. From time to time i can't connect to Steam, Battle.net or download from torrents (I'm mentioning torrents becuase there might be a connection). I share the internet with 10 other people all of them connected mostly via wi-fi. Is is possible that the connection is too low to connect to the already mentioned above servers? There is nothing wrong with my pc or internet settings because it works fine for a week and then all of a sudden not. Once we tried to hard reset the main router and after that it worked just fine.
Realy don't know what might be the reason and I would love to finally find out what's causing it.
The router is http://www.planet.com.tw/en/product/...t.php?id=34631
The modem is provided by austrian telecom company and is this one Pirelli PRG AV4202N

Thank you all for any help.

Answer:Internet works fine still cannot connect

It is possible that it could be a network congestion. Does your computer wireless adapter display any diagnostic as to why the connection was lost?

This is weird.
Cable internet works fine when I go straight from the modem to the computer ethernet port.
However, if I do anything through a router I can barely get a signal or a connection even to google.
Here's what I've tried so far....
I have a Belkin45 Router and a Netgear WGR614 Router
I have gone straight from the cable modem through each router into the ethernet port of the computer...nothing
I have gone from the modem to the router and used my Netgear wireless USB and I get a signal from the router, I scan the network and find the router no problem but still can not connect to the internet. Did this with each router and found each one no problem.
I have tried 6 different cables
I keep getting server not found or time outs.
Like I said, weird.

Answer:Internet works fine...until going through router

Please supply the following info, exact make and models of the equipment please.

Make and model of the broadband modem.
Connection type, wired or wireless.
If wireless, encryption used, (none, WEP, WPA, or WPA2)
Make/model of network card or wireless adapter.
Version and patch level of Windows on all affected machines, i.e. XP-Home (or XP-Pro), SP2, Vista, etc.

Let's try this with either of the routers:

Reset the router to factory defaults by holding the reset button down for 15 seconds with power on.
Turn off everything, the modem, router, computer.
Connect the modem to the router's WAN/Internet port.
Connect the computer to one of the router's LAN/Network ports.
Turn on the modem, wait for a steady connect light.
Turn on the router, wait for two minutes.
Boot the computer.

Hey,
My desktop is connected to my router via cable. And it randomly gets disconnected from time to time. I've tried re-installing drivers. I get the red X on my network icon in the taskbar, which usually happens when a cable is unplugged. I fixes it self after a minute or 2, its never longer than 1 minute, usually 10-15 seconds, and it happens ever 10-15 minutes.

My wifi works fine, and I have a vonage box connected to my main router which works fine too. It's just my desktop. I've tried different ports, same problem.

I'm heading home in a few hours and I've picked up a new 5 meter cable to check with.

What else could be the problem if the new cable doesn't fix it.

My network adapter is the on baord one on the Asus Maximus Formula.

Thanks.

Answer:Network randomly disconnecting. Wifi works fine.

Seems to be something wrong within the cable or could be the network card within your pc? Did you try the cable on any other pc or that?

I have three desktop computers here (two with XP, one with 2000) One of the XP machines had a whack of spyware and viruses (which I'm currenty trying to deal with in another thread). It hasn't been able to connect to the network for a couple days. This morning, my main PC was fine. As of now, none of the windows machines will connect to the internet, yet my little Mac here is working perfectly. Can I assume I have a network virus?

Thanks!!

Macs don't tend to be bothered by most viruses, as they are mostly written to mess with Windows machines. Sounds like whatever got your first machine got the other windows machine also.

Both Google Chrome, and FireFox connect fine, but nearly everything won't connect.

Skype can't connect.
Steam can't connect.
League of Legends can't connect.
Join.Me can't connect.
Etc...

But my browser works fine? (Just noticed, apparently my VPN can connect.)

My immediate reaction was to scan for viruses, scan'd with TDSSKiller- Nothing.

So I ran MSCONFIG, and disabled all start up programs, and restarted. Still won't connect.

Then I noticed their was a update on my windows update (which still connects to the internet), and there was a new service pack available, so hoping that would fix it, I installed it, restarted my computer, etc.., and still won't connect.

MalwareBytes didn't find anything serious.

Firewalls are disabled.

Never had this problem before today.

Btw, I don't have System Restore enabled.

I am on Windows 7.

I've been using Outlook Express for a long time. Recently it's been unable to connect to my incoming mail server about one in five times, but before it couldn't do it at all. However, it pretty much never is able to make a connection with my outgoing mail server. My webmail works just fine, so it isn't their servers. Nothing had been changed when the problem started or since then. I've looked over and over my account configurations and they all look good. I've even made a new account and it's the same problem. Does anyone have an idea as to what might be wrong?
The error I get when trying to send mail is as follows:

The message could not be sent because one of the recipients was rejected by the server. The rejected e-mail address was '(the person's address)@aol.com'. Subject 'Re: Stuff', Account: 'PatMedia servers', Server: 'smtp.patmedia.net', Protocol: SMTP, Server Response: '554 <(the person's address)@aol.com>: Recipient address rejected: Relay access denied', Port: 25, Secure(SSL): No, Server Error: 554, Error Number: 0x800CCC79

Hi all, first time posting here and hoping someone can help me out!

As the title implies, I am having trouble connecting to the internet, but not my network, when I assign a static IP to my machine. However, when it's set to DHCP, it works just fine.

Pertinent info:
-I'm connecting to a Linksys WRT610N router via a wireless USB adaptor, Netgear WNDA3100v2;
-Service is Time Warner Roadrunner cable;
-There is no IP conflict as I've got DHCP range set from .200-.249 and this machine's static is .100;
-All the other devices in the house are on static starting with .101 up and they all work fine, both wired and wirelessly;
-Can see and connect to all devices in the LAN, including the router, but nothing outside

Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated... thanks!

Hey everyone -

I can follow directions and am fairly tech-savvy, just don't have the time to troubleshoot this stuff and run my business. Here's the rundown:

Router: Cisco Linksys E1000 V2
-working fine until I unplugged to move it and plugged it in
-verified with tech support the problem is not physical
-right now, am hardwired to the router, which is hardwired to the cable modem, and connectivity is fine through hardwiring

-no luck through wireless - this is the error message I get:

This webpage is not available:
The server at www.google.com can't be found, because the DNS lookup failed. DNS is the network service that translates a website's name to its Internet address. This error is most often caused by having no connection to the Internet or a misconfigured network. It can also be caused by an unresponsive DNS server or a firewall preventing Google Chrome from accessing the network.

How do I fix this - I suppose it's some simple setting somewhere, just don't know where to go to or what to change. Thanks in advance for your help!

Dan

Hi!
As the title explains, I have a 40k Mbit/s connection, which my father's and sister's laptop get as advertised, but my pc gets speeds that vary from 2k-15k Mbits/s. Although, when I connect to the internet via ethernet cable the speed is as advertised, around 30k-40k. So I replaced the wifi adapter usb, but that did nothing, so I ran malware tests, even though nod32 did end up removing a MyStartSearch browser malware, internet speed is still slow. My dad also reset and reconfigured the router's setting but to no avail. I'm all out of ideas at this point, what to do next?
I also checked for any programs that might interfere or limit my internet speed in any way but found none. I should also mention that between malwarebytes and nod32 ive perhaps removed the same MyStartSearch malware 5 times already.
Any help is greatly appreciated!

Answer:Wifi speed is inexplicably slow, other pc's unaffected, with ethernet cable fine

I've removed the startsearch malware before and after i got the rly bad internet, it doesn't really seem to be related to it tho.

So I am attempting to connect to the wifi network at my girlfriends place, which I have done fine previously, but my laptop cant find it at all. I have tried restrarting my laptop, installing new drivers for the atheros wireless adaptor, resetting the router, but it still wont show up. It connects fine to other (older and newer) devices, and works fine when connected via ethernet cable, but it is hardly practical to sit on top of the router all day.

My laptop detects other networks fine, such as those of the neighbors and connects to my own home network fine. I have also tried deleting the saved network and manually connecting to the network while also checking the box about connecting even if the network is not broadcasting its SSID. Still nothing. I also checked power management settings and made sure it the network adaptor was using max performance power settings.

Previously when I set up their router, it was broadcasting on a single channel between 1 and 11, cant remember exactly which, and I have no reason to believe they have changed it.

Answer:Cant find specific Wifi Network but works fine with other devices.

connect by ethernet and have a look at the name and channel- it could be using channel 12 or 13 which is allowed outside the US but your PC is using channels 1-11 if US based setting

look at the SSID name and if indeed set to broadcast

I have seen that issue a few times - although xirrus usually shows the channel

all those signals are very low

whats the name of the wireless signal at your girlfriends
and where is that xirrus screen shot from - your girlfriends ?

ive been using the same setup for months, my laptop connects to our wireless network, its been perfect, our ipads connect to it too, theres never been a problem, then last night out of the blue it just stopped working, all the devices and my laptop can still connect to the network just fine and they can browse the net and ask questions on forums (), but they cant connect to game servers, my daughter cant play godus on her ipad, my son cant connect to minecraft, i cant connect to world of warcraft.

I did have a message pop up briefly on my laptop that there was an IP conflict and i thought that might have been something to do with it, i tried everything i could to get a new IP address, i did the ipconfig /release /renew thing, i tried leaving the modem and router cables out all night so i'd get a new one from my ISP but none of these actually worked, after checking i can see that i still have the same IP address.

But it still didnt make sense to me because its not only my laptop that cant connect to games, the other laptop and the ipads are also having the same problem. I googled for hours, trying various things, the main one i kept seeing was port forwarding, even though i had never needed to do that before i figured i'd give it a go and tried to open up wow's ports first. I found the list of ports to open on blizzards website and went to work opening them all up, but i am still unable to connect to battlenet/WoW

I also tried resetting my router back to factory se... Read more

I bought a Belkin G Wireless Router about 8 months back.

Starting a few weeks ago, I've had to set a static IP address to my recently built computer (sitting at 192.168.2.10 right now) for it to not disconnect every few minutes.

I then noticed that no wireless devices (tested with 2 Laptops and Ipod Touch) could connect. If I restarted the router and did NOT connect anything to it, it would connect with local access only. If I attempt to set the router up using the CD that came with the packaging, it claims it cannot connect to the internet, and then proceeds to actually kick me off the net.

Does anyone have any clue what coulda caused this?

As far as I know, I've not changed anything.

I am running a full system scan through Avast to see if there are any viruses, other than this I am not sure what to do but my Dell is now a rather expensive paper weight if I can't access the Internet (Edit 9:55 AM - according to Avast I have no viruses on the computer, HELP!)

Hi,

I have a new 3G router which I am trying to connect to an all-in-one PC-LCD monitor (for digital signage) via LAN. The PC is running XP-embedded.

The problem is that I can't see the router from the PC. I have plugged it in, connected it via LAN and set the Local Area Connection to Obtain IP automatically and DNS automatically.

However I get limited or no connectivity and clicking repair says it cannot renew IP address. If I do ipconfig, there is no default gateway showing.

Therefore if I go to IE and type 192.168.01 which is what the IP should be, it can't find anything.

It isn't to do with the 3G network, because I can't even access the router config page, before even thinking about getting to the outside world.

It doesn't seem to be the LAN connection/wiring because the LAN light on the router flickers when the PC is trying to get an IP, so it is connecting ok.

It also doesn't appear to be an issue which resetting the router would solve, since I just unplugged it and plugged it into my laptop LAN and as soon as I typed 192.168.01 into IE, it works fine on my laptop.

Any suggestions most welcome as I am stumped...

Cheers
Ian

Hello,
I've struggled all night to find a solution to this problem but I dont see to find the answer. I share a router with my roomates and we both have macbooks. I also have an additional PC.

When I tried accessing certain websites (for example: www.rapidshare.com or my.calendar.net) from the macbooks I get a DNS error:

DNS ERROR - cannot find server.

Also next to the address bar is shows me that "the website does not support identity information". However, it works fine with my PC when I enter the address. I tried flushing the arp cache using the following commands:

sudo arp -d -a and
dscacheutil -flushcache

but the problem persists. In addition, I did a tracert command in my PC to find the IP address. I typed the ip address in the macbook computer and it work perfectly.

First, I thought it was my macbook but the problem is the same in my roommates. Also, I thought (for some reason) I got the adress blocked but it works in my PC.

So I am assuming its my router (DI-2254) but I reset it and nothing. I suspect it has to be with my PS3 that I used when trying to play online but I doubt it.

?? Any solutions ????
Thank you!

Hello!
I just got a new modem (Netgear) that I replaced the old one (D-Link). The wifi is working perfectly, laptops, iPads etc. is working all fine.
The problem is, the computer that uses Ethernet cable isn't working at all. It's says 'Internet service unavailable' and the networks name went from 'unidentified' to 'Network 2'. Both computers using Ethernet cable isn't working and I have updated drive, try to see if it is the routers (Belkin G wireless)fault etc. Even my printer isn't working even though it uses wifi. The printer tough says 'Press router's WSP button' but my router doesn't have one.

So how can I fix this problem and make those computers work?

(Sorry for the description/language, I only have basic computer knowledge)

Thanks!

A few other people have posted similar problems but nowhere did I see an answer so I thought I would post.

Using Windows 10 64bit. It is updated completely. (Not the Insider build).

Just bought a HP Officejet 3620. Downloaded the most recent driver and print/scan software from HP's support website and installed according to their instructions. I am connected via USB, using the USB cable HP provided to a USB 2 port (not a hub).

Print function works fine, right off of the bat.

The Device Manager and the Devices and Printers both show the printer working properly and say there are no newer drivers. They also recognize it is a printer and scanner.

When I try to scan it says that the scanner is not connected, it cannot communicate with the device. This happens when I use the HP Scan utility and when I use Windows Fax and Scan, and it happens both when I set it to scan the scan surface or the document feeder. If I use the interface on the scanner itself when I choose the scan to computer option it shows my computer listed, but then when I try to start the scan it gives the same error, that it cannot connect. Similarly when I try to scan from within Adobe Acrobat it says it cannot connect to any scanner.

I have run HP Printer and Scanner Doctor, and it fails. It gets to the "Driver Check" section and says it cannot communicate with the device, that I should unplug the power cord, then plug it back in, and then restart Windows. I do this and the app starts back up and... Read more

Answer:HP Officejet 3620 Scanner won't connect, Printer works fine

Update:

I tried total removal of HP software and drivers, and allowing Windows to use its own drivers instead, and same results. I tried this on two machines, both Win10x64, though had the most recent updates and one had been offline and is about 2 weeks behind in updates, but it didn't matter.

I then tried the advice on some of the HP forum pages about this issue, not with this model printer but the same issue. There were two flavors of the same process, which basically involved using various utilities to wipe everything HP from system and reinstalling the software, and no dice. Same result.

No one else has any ideas?

Any thought about whether this might be something that will come in a Windows update so I should just wait a bit since using the scanner is not urgent right now? Clearly HP scanners and Win 10 are not getting along, I am not the only one experiencing problems nor is this the only model... but that doesn't always mean that they're working to fix it...

My desktop (windows 7 ultimate 64bit) has been able to connect fine to the internet until I got home from work this morning. My laptop is connecting to the same modem fine through wireless (along with my wii). The modem I am using is Motorola SB 901. When I rightclick my connection on my desktop and hit troubleshoot problems, I get 'local area connection 2 doesn't have a valid ip configuration'. Same thing happens when I switch the ethernet cord to local area connection 1. When I go to control panel, network and internet, network and sharing, the connection map at the top stops between my pc and the network (which is now labeled as 'unidentified network').

Here is a list of what I have done so far to try and resolve the issue:

1. Replaced the ethernet cord with one I know is working
2. Full scanned my pc for viruses
3. Disabled all firewalls and virus protection programs
4. Restored my pc to a previous save state
5. Reset winsock with cmd via these prompts: netsh winsock reset catalog and netsh int ip reset reset.log hit
6. This attempt is unfinished as I am getting stuck. I am attempting to setup a static ip to attempt to resolve the issue, but when I open cmd and type ipconfig/all, the default gateway under my local area connection is completely blank.

Here is what comes up with ipconfig/all:

Got a weird situation with a compaq desktop. I upgraded the system memory to 1.2gb for a woman. She took the unit home, everything works fine, except she can't connect to internet. I got the unit back, and it connected to the network fine. The desktop still can't connect to the internet even after I did a complete system restore. Comcast agreed to replace her modem with a new one, and her friend's laptop can connect to the internet fine. She told me that the network connection showed connected, just when using IE, she got no server error. I tried the desktop with my network connection and I can surf the net with IE. Right now I told her to bring the desktop to her friend's house and try it there. If that still doesn't work, I'm out of idea. Any suggestions?

Hey,
I can't seem to get my router or FreeBSD box to work with my new cable modem line. It works perfectly fine with my winxp laptop with DHCP on. When I try DHCP or manually set the info into my FreeBSD box or my Sonicwall router it doesnt work. The Sonicwall gives an error saying that it couldn't obtain a valid DHCP lease with or without DHCP enabled. With my FreeBSD box, when I use the /stand/sysinstall to set it DHCP on my network adapter, dhclient crashes.
Any ideas whats going on? Is comcast doing something to cause this?

Thanks,
Robert

Answer:cable modem no worky with *nix or router but works fine with windows

i know with mediacom, if you switch devices (or network cards, etc), you have to put in a specific URL to some server of thiers and select the mac address of your new machine connected to the network, before you can connect to the internet. That caused me problems with my freebsd router at one time.

First please accept my apologies for not posting in the correct category, if this is not a hardware issue. I feel I have eliminated all issues thus leading me to think it's a malfunctioning WLAN card or a driver issue. Here is the scenario:

* Last used Wifi 48 hrs ago, worked fine
* Today laptop detects wifi, but shows "connected with limited access" and doesn't connect.
* It is showing an IP address
* Tried Ethernet cord direct to wall and to back of router, did NOT work either.
* Other laptop in my household detects wifi and connects just fine.
* Restored to previous point 48 hrs ago - NOT SOLVED
* Uninstalled and reinstalled Wireless WLAN Card - NOT SOLVED
* Ran all Microsoft Diagnostic Tests including getting new IP settings for network adapter- NOT SOLVED
*Confirmed IPv6 is checked to auto obtain IP address for WiFi, as well as, the same for Hardwire Connection.
* Uninstalled all Firewalls, Antivirus programs - NOT SOLVED
* Toggled back and forth the wifi switch and the light is not coming on.

Answer:Challenge:Wifi Detected but won't connect+Won't connect w/Ethernet cord?

Welcome to Major Geeks.

Based on your statements that this is a very recent problem and that neither wired or Wi-Fi connections allow you to connect to the Internet, my suspicion is you have been infected with either a virus or malware.

Over the past few weeks, have you or anyone else downloaded and installed anything off the Internet or an unknown disc or flash drive? If you're not sure, go to CONTROL PANEL > PROGRAMS AND FEATURES and sort by date. Make note of anything installed in the past few weeks.

Also download Malware Bytes and the latest Malware Bytes definitions update in the Downloads section onto a USB drive. Boot the Dell into Safe Mode (F8 at the BIOS screen) then install and run Malware Bytes from the USB drive.

Post again in the Malware Removal forum with the results from both what (if anything) was recently installed plus the results of the Malware Bytes scan. The Malware Removal experts should be able to help you solve the problem.

Hope this helps.

Hello. I have three Dell XPS PCs connected via a Verizon Actiontec router to each other and to the internet, all running Windows 10 (two preinstalled, one upgraded from Windows 7). All connect fine to the internet via Ethernet and wifi, but they can only see/connect to each other via wifi. They cannot see each other via Ethernet; instead I have to turn wifi on for each of them to see/access each other. Not exactly sure when this started, but it wasn?t always like this (some windows update maybe?) I haven?t found my particular problem in searching forums, and there are so many options on what to try to fix other network issues, I?m not sure where to start.

If it?s a hardware issue, I would think it would be with the router, as it?s unlikely the hardware would fail on all three PCs. But since I can connect to the internet via both Ethernet and wifi, I think it?s unlikely a router problem. I have Norton 360 running on all the PCs, but I?ve tried disabling the firewalls, adding Network Trust and Device Trust, and the problem still exists, and again, all works fine over wifi. Could be a network driver problem, but I?ve tried uninstalling and letting windows reinstall the driver, and that hasn?t helped.

So some other setting that got messed up on all three computers at some point? Renaming the workgroup and/or PCs? An ipv6 issue? Any ideas on where to start??

Thanks for your help.

pretty stumped with this. All seemed to be fine until I accepted to try some AVG anti-virus thing for free yesterday morning..I have AVG on my PC and the invitation seemed to be coming FROM the program, now I suspect not.

- Can't connect to the Internet.
- I can connect to my wifi network AND to the internet from my phone, laptop, PS3 and PS4.

This is what I've tried and what I have done that I think may have made the problem worse. Ugh.

- I tried uninstalled AVG, when I couldn't uninstall one of the programs titled "avg protection" (there were 2 and one uninstalled fine), I deleted the file folder alltogether. Still didn't fix it and it seems like part of the program froze upon installation which prohibited me from uninstalling AVG properly. I kept getting a message saying "you can't uninstall this program without uninstalling programs associated with it first..." or something to that nature. I tried to uninstall "avg protection" but it kept restarting the installation from the beginning but couldn't do anything because it needed an internet connection. Ugh. I feel that deleting the AVG program from my PC may have been a bad move after doing some reading.

- I tried system restore to a few different points. NOPE. Tried it through safe mode..NOPE.

- I run the network diagnostics tool. It tells me to unplug my router/modem...wait three minutes, blah, blah...when I click continue I get "runtime error prog... Read more

Hoping someone can help me connect to my new wifi!

A few days ago, I just had comcast cable/internet/home phone installed, all run through a modem/router combo. (I'll try to post some more specific details below). So, TV and phone are working great. And actually even the internet is working great. I just can't connect MY laptop to the internet. I can connect my iPhone and Kindle Fire w/o difficulty. And if I plug into the ethernet cable, I can get the laptop to go the internet. But when I connect to my wifi connection, I end up with only a local connection. On a side note, the first time I tried to connect to the signal, my computer asked me to set up a profile for it (WLAN profile I think). And I did, stupidly. I vaguely remember having a problem with that in the past, but I had tech support at my college that fixed it.

I have restarted both the modem/router and my computer multiple times. I have tried to repair the connection with Windows. I have tried tech support with comcast, but they keep referring me to the computer manufacturer. There is an unsecured signal nearby I CAN connect to (tried out of curiosity to make sure it WASN'T the laptop), but I don't want to pirate, so instead I stay tethered to my 2ft ethernet cable. I have searched google and reddit to no avail. I do not claim to be tech savvy, but I can follow directions pretty well (just be specific step-by-step). Last night out of desperation I tried the Geek Squad online chat to help, bu... Read more

I have been using my ASUS X53E laptop on the WiFi at my university for the past 4 months with no problems connecting to the internet. A few days ago, my internet suddenly started going in and out. It will work alright for about an hour, and then it will stop working completely, even though it says my WiFi connection is still "excellent". However, when I plugged in an ethernet cable, it has been working perfectly with no problems.
No one else around me has been having problems with the WiFi - it's just me. Any ideas?

I just moved and have been trying to get my PC connected to the internet at my new place. I have a Dlink AC750 dual band wireless router, and my computer has no problem connecting to it wirelessly. However I cannot figure out how to connect directly by ethernet. I have a cable running from the router to the back of the PC, but the icon in my tray just says 'No connections are available'. I have also tried connecting directly to the PC bypassing the router. Everyone I have spoken to, including tech support, has told me that you "plug it in and it just works". Am I missing some step in getting my PC to recognize the ethernet cable?

Answer:WiFi works, ethernet doesn't

Hello mate have you tried updating the LAN driver for that machine and even simpler a new cable??

I've been having a problem of late where my ethernet connection has been unable to gain internet access and reportedly shows the network as being 'unidentified'. It will be unable to connect for a long period during the day and then regains access.

However, if I connect my USB Wifi adapter, it picks up the network immediately and internet connection isn't a problem.

This is the ipconfig /all whilst both USB Wifi and ethernet cable are connected.

My 2 year old Lenovo Ideapad Yoga 13, Palm rest was not working.hence I replace the plam rest cover. I also remove i again replace Hindges to resolve hard hindges issue. But when I re-assemble the laptop, when I turn On, nothing displayed on the screen, but you can see the screen is on.  I keep it running for some time and try to connect via remote desktop, I am able to access my laptop without any problem and everything working fine. What could be the reason? I specifically check all connections 2 times, Note: 1. When I press "F9", I can feel the turn ON/OFF of the screen, but still blank screen.           2. I never face such problem before.            3. I also removed black strip at bottom of the LCD screen to remove, hindges for cleaning.  Kindly suggest solution.

My internet works fine with the wire from modem directly connected into the laptop but when the wire from modem is connected to the router, I am not able to access the internet.
I tried to make my laptop (Running windows 7 64 bit os) as the router and i can easily access net on my other devices.

I thought there is a problem with my router. So I took my router to my cousins place who has the same ISP provider. And to my surprise ,my router worked perfectly there.
I cannot understand what i can do to fix my problem.
My ISP just provides me the wire , the modem is installed somewhere out. I just get the wire from the modem.

My ISP gives dynamic ip addresses. I have to login in the site portal.beamtele.com every time i connect the wire to my ethernet port of the laptop.
I took the router to my friends place sharing the same ISP with the same package. My router worked fine there.
i brought his Belkin router to my home to check. And at my place, it didnt work.

Just to start off, I am COMPLETELY clueless and have no tech savvy whatsoever, so simple language would be appreciated

I've owned this laptop for a little over a year, and all this time I've been able to connect to Wifi without a problem. This morning the icon at the bottom left of the screen told me there was no Internet connection available. when I troubleshot it, it suggested using the Ethernet cord to connect. The Ethernet cord connects them fine, and the internet connection becomes available, but I'm still unable to use the Wifi.

This is an issue with my laptop, because all the other devices in my house are able to connect to the Wifi, and the modem is showing all the appropriate lights and such. I've tried turning it off and on again, but alas, this once that method has failed :/ I've also tried resetting the modem, and it made no difference.

Last night I was uninstalling various programs that I didn't need, and that's the only thing I've done differently to my usual computing habits. I don't think I removed anything unless I knew what it was, but it's possible I accidently removed something important. I don't know if that has any relevance or not, but it's all I can think of as the reason for this.

My laptop is a Toshiba Qosmio, and the system I use is Windows 7.

My modem is Telstra Bigpond.

Please help! D:

Answer:My Laptop won't connect to Wifi, but will connect with an Ethernet cord

How far from the router are you? I experience the same thing occasionally on my laptop.
I usually have to switch the wifi switch off on the laptop & on then I reboot & I'm back online. My laptop & tower are both about 50' away & on the lower floor where the router is. Good luck.

Hi all!

I have a problem with my university internet. I can connect fine through wireless, no problems at all.
However when I attempt to use my ethernet cable, I have a connection for 5-10 seconds before any webpage I attempt to access is directed to a portal to log in with my university ID and password. Once I do so and the portal has confirmed that I have access (the user/pass has worked), the display page tells me to retry my original URL, however the internet connection does not work and I am not able to access anything. Any help? Thanks!

I have gone to the help center at my school and they were unable to help me

So for about 2-3 months I've been running hardwired Ethernet internet instead of wifi. I keep my Dell plugged into my tv. The other day I tried to move it and use wifi in another room but I have no option. When I first started with Windows 10 on release day I was using wifi with no problems and when going the Ethernet route it was always plug n play when you going to wifi vs wired.
1. Even after unplugging the Ethernet cord the symbol doesn't change to a wireless symbol the Ethernet symbol just has a little red box.
2. Tried turning airplane mode on and off as well as full pc reboot
3. Right clicking internet from the bottom right of the screen image and clicking open network and sharing doesn't give any wireless options
4. I've tried troubleshooting also with Ethernet unplugged and no success.
So just to repeat Ethernet works perfectly. Wifi used to work. My roommate who also is running the same version of Dell wifi works perfectly. Same account and everything.
The only thing I can think of is the pc updated one day as I have automatic updates and it wiped the driver maybe. So if anyone has any ideas on what to do.
Thanks

Running Win 8.1 on Lenovo Y410p. Verizon FIOS router, Actiontec MI424WR (Actiontec[1] ).
Everything was running fine until last night. No internet when I connected to the router with an ethernet cable, but the wifi still works. I ran windows troubleshooting diagnostic and it said ETHERNET DOESN'T HAVE A VALID IP. Restarted my laptop and the router, changed ports, got a new ethernet cable, tried hooking up another laptop, still nothing. It shows up as Unidentified Network with No Internet Access. Xbox is also connected to router via ethernet, that isn't working either. The wifi is working but it's shoddy, every few minutes it'll lag, Chrome will go into NOT RESPONDING mode for a second or 2 and then go back to working. Wifi is also prone to dropping out and coming back at times.
Please advise.

Answer:Ethernet doesn't have a valid IP, wifi still works?

Power cycle your ISP Modem, router and computer(s).

Power all off
Remove power from modem and router for 30 seconds or so.
Connect power to modem, wait for it to finish booting and stabilize
Connect power to router, wait for it to finish booting and stabilize
Power up computer with Ethernet cable already connected

If still not working: collect IP configuration information as follows:

Open a Elevated Command Prompt:

Press WIN + X to open Start context menu.
Select Command Prompt (Admin).

Paste the following into the Command Prompt window, exactly as shown, including double quotes:

cmd /c "ipconfig /all > postme.txt & ping yahoo.com >> postme.txt & reg query "HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Internet Settings" | find /i "proxy" >> postme.txt & notepad postme.txt & del postme.txt"

and press ENTER.

A file will open in Notepad. Please copy and paste the contents here. Close the Notepad window and the file will be deleted and the Command Prompt window will also close. Paste the information in a reply here.

here's my problem - I can't connect via wifi to my router, but can connect to the internet with an ethernet cable.

However, my other computer connects via wifi without problems. I've gone through my troubleshooting and the wifi light is on, so that's not the issue. I also updated my driver (says it's working fine) and even tried to uninstall and reinstall it. I am not sure what else to do.

If I try to connect via wifi though, the computer recognizes all the available networks, including my own, but just won't connect. It says a cable is unplugged (which at that time it is, because it's supposed to connect wirelessly).

I have a HP Pavilion dv6-3147sb Entertainment notebook, and it uses Windows 7

ANY help, tips, fixes? I will try anything at this point!!

Hello,
I'm not sure if this is in the right place but here goes...

Yesterday, the wireless was going slow, so I accessed the router (192.168.0.1)
and changed the WPA Pre-Shared Key to something more complex and difficult to guess.
After that, it would still connect to wireless but it wouldn't load pages quickly, or at all.
Then, it stopped connecting to my wireless network altogether.
I'm writing this post with my Ethernet cable plugged in and it works perfectly fine.

I ran Windows troubleshooter while still able to connect to wireless. Results were that the problem had something to do with the DNS Server. Since then, I've tried winsock fix, flushdns,
ipconfig in cmd, resetting the wireless WPA Pre-Shared Key back to the original, changing the Preferred and Alternate DNS servers, powering off my Thomson router.

I've tried to cmd - ipconfig /release /renew but it says the media is disconnected and it can't
perform that operation.

Any help would be great,
-Scott

Answer:Ethernet Works Wireless Won't Connect

How far is the computer from the router? Are there any walls, floors it has to go thru?
Personally, I'd stick with the ethernet.

Greetings:

Our home school's having trouble attaching a wireless router to my XP PC's ethernet port.

Our donated vintage Macs and XP machines are tied to the internet via a cable box's wireless router. Works just fine. Now I wish to boost the signal to a building beyond the local area by attaching a wireless router to a Dell 260 running XP. This router's IP is 192.168.11.1 (ON) and 192.168.11.100 (OFF), and I've spent hours with the Connection Wizard thing on XP trying to create a ethernet path to the router but I can't find a configuration that states an ethernet path or channel. The modem lights normally and other machines can pick up and connect with its signal but there's no real transmission, the receiver machines getting:

Firefox can't find the server at http://www.acorn.com.
Check the address for typing errors such as ww.example.com instead of http://www.example.com
If you are unable to load any pages, check your computer's network connection.
If your computer or network is protected by a firewall or proxy, make sure that Firefox is permitted to access the Web.

Ironically, the router works just great on the Macs, which has both Airport on to receive signals from a cable TV wireless router and also has its shared Ethernet connection on, and the ethernet side requires no IP configuration like it seems you must on the XP's internet connection page. The router in question just plugs in the Mac and transmits just fine. I... Read more
