I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Hi all!

After having reinstalled my OS (MS Win 10 Pro 64-bit) in conjunction with the AU, I am once again searching my computer with many Anti-Malware tools in order to subsequently clean it for malware, given that each tool has its own database and as such may pick up some malware which another will miss.

And meanwhile I stumbled upon Norton Security Scan, and hence, my question is:

What is your opinion on the Anti-Malware tool Norton Security Scan?

Thank you very much in advance!

Answer:What is your opinion on the Anti-Malware tool Norton Security Scan?

It doesn't remove any malware...it only checks for malware and other security software. Norton Security Scan is a software tool designed to help you understand if your computer is currently protected from known threats. Norton Security Scan performs a scan of your computer and displays if there are existing viruses, worms, spyware, unwanted adware, or Trojans residing on your computer. Norton Security Scan is used to check how protected your computer is currently...Norton Security Scan will check to see what security software is on your computer. It will not conflict with other security software that is installed.Norton Security Scan FAQsMajor software vendors like Adobe, Java and others have been bundling third-party software and utilities like this from McAfee and Norton in their download packages which allows users to perform a system checkup of their computers. Not everyone is happy about it.

Well hi there, i think this is my first topic i have made since joining lol so ill try my best to be clear as possible.

Well recently my anti-virus software has expired its subscription which was Norton Internet Security 08 but i made a grave mistake in installing this at first, cause it was clearly ate my CPU's memory lol and i hated it for this reason even though the features were good it was just too much of a memory hog, so i was wondering if someone could advise me on which freeware anti-virus/malware software i should get next (even though Norton was free for me lol, its a long story anyways), cause clearly i cannot pick one by my self, if i do ill just end up with another software eating my systems memory lol and one of my friends advised me on getting the Zonealarm security suite, is this any good? can anyone tell me thank you, so if any members be kind enough to point me towards the right direction, i would be grateful, thank you.

Ohh and by the way i have spybot and ad-ware on my system aswell and if possible would be able to let me know if i need additional security software installed in addition to this.

It's all to often these things change, not to long ago Kaspersky and NOD32 were damn near head to head as far as the windows world is concerned. However, as of late I've been using NOD32. I've noticed that the functionality is actually pretty bad, and I've been reading that the detection rates are not that great anymore.(Only somewhat related) Overall, it seems once a company spends money on advertising. Its products start to suffer.

I don't know the Difference b/w Anti-Malware & Anti-Virus & Anti-Spyware.

Is ESET a Anti-Malware.

How the Users are able to Know that this antivirus can be used as Companion with any av (like CIS + EAM)

Answer:What is Difference b/w Anti-Malware & Anti-Virus & Anti-Spyware

long time ago, in ancient ages, where computer were barely able to reach 333Mghz , they were a distinction between Virus, malwares and spywares.

Virus is a specific term that includes items that modify your files then replicate itself and jump to another computer.

Spywares were mostly items that silently collect datas and transmit them to someone; they include cookies, trojans, adwares, monitoring tools, etc...

Malwares is a most generalist term that includes all forms of malicious items such as viruses, worms , trojans horses, rootkits, spywares, etc...

at that time security softwares were design to protect only some of these categories, for example , i had to use Avast (very basic at that time , with an interface that looks like a music player ^^) alongside Spybot Search & Destroy and Adaware (both specialized against spywares)

now these terms are obsoletes since any antiviruses/malwares are similar by detecting and cleaning all of them.

Can anyone recommend free security downloads to replace my macafee security suite. On one of your pages I read that the ones recommended are better and less resourse hungry. So far I've downloaded avast antivirus and comodo firewall pro as recommended, but I'm not sure what else, if anything is needed. For instance on my Macafee suite I also have a 'privacy service' and a 'spamkiller' - are these also included in the free downloads mentioned or do I need some others? Also, if they are included can I safely uninstall the rest of my Macafee security suite now?

Thanks in anticipation.

The followed http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/virus-remo...-security-suite this guide section 'automated removal section and now the PC bluescreen's on both normal and safemode. Looking for guidance as to what they might have broken. Thoughts? The BSOD is a stop c000021a - windows logon process system process terminated unexpectedly with a status of 0xc00000005 (0x00000000 0x00000000).

Hi .The majority of references I see for this...are for Win 2K. XP users who have this error...don't really seem to get a resolution of any sort that I can see. From looking at the Win 2K references, I'd say that the registry is jumbled. A repair install effort would be worth a try...but I suspect that a clean install will be the ultimate resolution. Some Google Links.Louis

First of all i would like to apologize if this topic is in wrong category, or it should not even be asked on this site. And second of all, please be patience i'm a noob looking for answers So whats all about? Well i'm meeting new terms here and i have no idea what they mean and what they do. And as anyone else i wanna be safe in this era of cyber-crime. So basically i know whats a anti-virus and a anti-spyware and that they can run together. Also i heard that 2 anti-virus don't do good but 2 anti-spyware do. So what i'm asking is, what is a anti-malware? Can a anti-malware, anti-virus, and anti-spyware run together? Could you suggest some good+free of those 3? Sorry for my bad English and being such a noob

Answer:Anti-malware, Anti-virus, Anti-spyware

Florin, you might take interest in this thread, though it may be quite a bit of reading: What's the Best Anti-virus?

It is there that they discuss all kinds of different antiviruses and coupled security software. I personally only use Microsoft Security Essentials, but I have used it along with Malwarebytes for added security in the past.

Basically, you could have your system completely locked down with lots of extra security, but in some cases it becomes a hassle because of how much your computer becomes protected and overly secured. If you prefer a speedy computer over security, generally you use less security software, but if it is the other way around, you will want beefier security software which may slow things down slightly. That link I've provided will have most everything you will need.

The Antivirus, Anti-Malware, & UAC Preferences Poll:

For many of us here Antivirus, Anti-Malware, and UAC are cornerstones of computer security, yet our preferences regarding the choice or settings of these still differ from person to person.
This Poll is to gauge those differences.

ANTIVIRUS / ANTI-MALWARE:
Perhaps you are happy with Windows Defender
If not,Is your Antivirus part of a Security Suite, or is it Independent?
Do you use a real-time Anti-Malware Software (or 2nd AV) alongside your Antivirus?
Maybe you use an Anti-Malware Software instead of an Antivirus for real-time protection.
You could be one of a growing number of people that does not use a real-time AV or AM

UAC:
Which do you prefer your UAC set at? -
Do not dim my desktop
Default
Maximum

The main distinction between an AV ,AM,or neither is guided by the name of the product /description of its developer.
If the primary function of a software is as an Anti-Exe/Whitelisting program then it does not count as an AV or AM in this poll, regardless as to whether it uses a service such as VirusTotal or not.

Answer:The Antivirus, Anti-Malware, & UAC Poll

I checked :

AV: - My Antivirus is an Independent,3rd-party Software
AV: - I use a real-time 3rd-party Anti-Malware (or 2nd AV) alongside my AV
UAC: - My UAC is set at "Maximum"
But for the UAC, it can change, depending on what I'm doing (need to modify it sometimes)

Camera Wizard not poping up after removing Total Security/Antivirus Pro_2010 I have a PC with Windows XP SP3 with Avast, SuperAnti-Spyware and MBAM while browsing I got a yellow virus warning (something win32 I believe) from Avast pop up near the bottom tray and within seconds the Total Security pop-ups started. My PC slowed to a stop so I rebooted and saw that Antivirus Pro_2010 had installed itself on my PC. All my Anti Virus programs would not start (ie MBAM) so I ended up following forums to end some processes, delete some .dll files that were known to be malicious and rename the .exe's to get Anti Virus programs to run. I installed and used AVG which found a couple things. Then I used ComboFix, and finally I got MBAM to run which found a good 40+ trojans etc. I believe I got the virus off but I tried to restore to before I got the virus but was unable to. I have since run scans with MBAM and SuperAnti-Spyware which have found nothing. Avast also finds nothing but it has a list of 44 files (mostly in WINDOWS\ folder with the last path part of file doubled) that it is unable to scan: because "The system cannot find the specified path". When I look on my C: drive and follow the file path, the second to last part is always missing (ie. WINDOWS\addins\addins) addins is not there. When I plug in my camera, the camera wizard does not pop up anymore as it use to before I had and removed the virus. I also saw on the unscanable list that there was a WINDOWS\Connecti... Read more

Hello,

I have a problem that is far beyond my limited skills. One of our people has a laptop that has either malware or a virus infecting it. Two symptoms are present: first, when using firefox web pages get redirected to advertising or to unrelated google searches; second, the machine seems more sluggish than usual.

I have tried to download anti-spyware software (e.g. Spy Sweeper, CounterSpy, MalwareBytes, Superantispyware, PC Doctor) and nothing works. In some cases such as Counterspy and PC Doctor, the executable will run but the program will not update (and thus, not allow for a scan). In other cases such as MalwareBytes, the executable simply will not run.

I have run a Trend Micro anti-virus scan. It seems to detect something but it crashes before the scan can complete. The same thing happens with Panda Activescan. Last night, I ran Panda Activescan for over 8 hours. When I woke up, the scan had frozen at the 52% point and had found 1 infected file, which it didn't appear to clean up.

Anyway, I'd really appreciate any help.
Best regards,
Jordan

Good morning everyone,
Frequent visitor, first time poster of this forum. I want to thank anyone in advance for committing any amount of time to my problem. I'm hoping someone has some experience with this issue. Allow me to explain:

Yesterday, I woke-up my computer and opened up my browser (I use Google Chrome). As soon as I clicked to open the browser, I noticed a Windows Explorer Pop-up. I have attached a picture of what this box looks like, but to describe it for those who are not able to open the attachment: The windows header said "Mod Info" and the Content said "BC LOADED" the only available options for me to click were "OK" or the "Close" button at the top right. Without clicking anything the box then disappeared and Google Chrome opened as usual. This behavior was unexpected, I've never seen this before. Worrying I had some kind of Spyware or Malware, I decided to try running my AV program. I use Avast Free.

I went to look for the process in the hidden icons list on my taskbar, where it usually resides. I didn't see it there, which was concerning. I tried running the program from the start menu, but after clicking it, nothing opened. This was also a red flag that something must be wrong. So I decided to try and run Malwarebytes Anti-Malware. This program would also not open when prompted.

I decided to scan google for my symptoms to look for recommended fixes. Several tech support forums suggested to those who presented simil... Read more

11/25/2014 After viewing facebook videos all computer any normal split second minimal activity takes minutes.
Even in safe mode any activity in windows explorer is crippled.
Opening any folder Task Manager can take several minutes.
Internet access is unavailable, so I am submitting everything from non-infected Windows 8 machine.
All system restore points are gone.

Ran the who's who of malware utilities.
MalwareBytes, MalwareBytesAntiRootKit, RogueKiller, rkill, AdwCleaner, HitmanPro_64, tdsskiller
Full system scan with McAfee.
All of above scans are clean.
FRST_64 also ran to provide log files.

Answer:Infection undetected by malware anti-virus anti-rootkit software

A little more background:
I did not observe any obvious malicious or unexpected process entries in Task Manager.
dllhost.exe *32 appears intermittently when starting/stopping programs.
This is never more than a single instance, shows very little CPU or memory usage,
but does have path of C:\Windows\SysWOW64\dllhost.exe

AdwCleaner did identify and delete C:\ProgramData\apn

There was also something called Au_.exe leftover related to "DropBox" application.
I uninstalled "DropBox" and manually deleted Au_.exe file

My subscription for Macafee ran out and I never got around to downloading AVG or some other antivirus freeware on my netbook. I experienced some obvious signs of a virus/malware not long after (I would do a google search on Chrome and would get redirected to some very odd sites when I clicked on something safe-looking). So I attempted to download AVG and others with no luck. I then restored my system to an earlier date hoping this would be good enough to remove whatever virus/malware was affecting it. No such luck as I am still unable to download said freeware (although now I am able to surf the net with no issues). So, I happened across your lovely website and am crossing my fingers that you may be able to save the day!

Thanks so much for your time!

Hi all!

Nowadays, we all have real-time running anti-virus, anti-malware and anti-exploit/anti-ransomware for maximum computer security, as well as backup- and disk imaging software, along with Windows Firewall.

And of course common sense and following Best Practices for Safe Computing.

It is also equally important to use add-ons in your web browser like i.e. WebOfTrust, µBlock Origin and Ghostery for additional security.

However, no installed security tools will provide 100% continous protection, even with a multi-layered security solution. There is always a chance that some malware can bypass everything.

Nevertheless, that is where standalone anti-malware tools can help detect and remove whatever malware could remain on your system.

And hence, my question is as follows;

Do you supplement your Anti-Virus with standalone Anti-Malware tools?

Thank you very much in advance!

Regards,
midimusicman79

ok, i've got like an anti-virus, anti-malware, anti-spyware, and a hijack this. Should i like remove some of these programs? Cause i need the laptop to speed up. any suggestions?? thanks.

Answer:Anti-virus, antispyware,anti-malware, hijack this! should i remove some of them?

There is excellent support here on TechSpot for major infestations.
In the meantime, if you need free software, I would download Avira Antivir, SuperAntiSpyware, MalwareBytes, and the free Microsoft Security Essentials. Run full scans with each. If they find evil infestations, remove them, then reboot and rerun the scans one more time.

I've just cleaned up my computer of random "free anti-virus software" that was downloaded over a period of time, and my computer is finally free and I wanna keep it that way! hehe

Any help is much appreciated.

Thank you,

Answer:Best free anti-virus/anti-malware/protection for Windows XP 32-bit

There is no universal "one size fits all" solution that works for everyone and there is no single best anti-virus. Every vendor's virus lab and program scanning engine is different. Each has has its own strengths and weaknesses and they often use a mix of technologies to detect and remove malware. In many cases choosing an anti-virus is a matter of personal preference and what works best on a particular system. You may need to experiment and find the one most suitable for your needs. Hi and new to the forum . I currently have Norton Security, MBAM Pro, CCLeaner Professional, adwcleaner, and I did have Hitman Pro, for a while several years ago when my computer was hacked.

I have had Norton for several years, but I am thinking of switching to Emsisoft and use my Windows 7 Firewall. I use MBAM for live monitoring along with the Norton Security..The adwcleare software I use periodically, or if there is an issue the other programs don't handle. For example when out bound traffic was blocked by MBAM, but it was continously happening, the adwcleaner software found and eliminated the culprit. It was very useful also when my computer was hacked.  I also have the active monitoring turned off on CCleaner.

Would also adding Binisoft or Tinnywall add more security to the Windows 7 Firewall, or would it be better to just use the Windows Firewall by itself? I don't really want anything too complicated on the Firewall settings, but just maybe make a few teaks, possibly.  One other thing, would it be good to add WinPatrol Pro?

Sorry for a lot of questions, and thanks for any responses as I value your opinions.

Answer:Is This a Good Anti-Malware and Anti-Virus Protection Program?

Although Norton (Symantec) is as good as any other well known anti-virus program, it it requires numerous services and running processes that consume a lot of system resources and often results in complaints of high CPU usage. Anti-virus software components insert themselves deep into the operating systems core where they install kernel mode drivers that load at boot-up and create files/folders/registry entries in various locations. Further, there have been numerous complaints about lack of sufficient support from the vendor.I have read from other users that Norton has made improvements in newer versions of their software so they are not as resource heavy as past versions...while others still say differently. Those issues plus the cost factor are the primary reason many folks look for a free alternative. IMO, Norton (Symantec) is better utilized in an Enterprise system environment protecting many client computers. With that said, there are a lot of folks who prefer using Norton (especially if it came preinstalled) and there is nothing wrong with staying with a product you are satisfied with.Switching to Emsisoft and using Windows 7 Firewall is a wise choice.5 Reasons Why the Windows Firewall is one of the Best FirewallsWindows Firewall: Your System’s Best DefenseEmsisoft Anti-Malware is an effective alternative to consider. Hi

I just bought my first ever smartphone (yes, I've been living under a rock) - the iphone 5s. I'm after recommendations for good software to protect it, free if possible.

I've looked in the itunes store and the options for anti-virus seem limited. The Mcafee app gets bad reviews and the others I've never heard of, and/or have no reviews. any suggestions would be great.

On the anti-malware front, i can't seem to find anything in itunes store when i try to search. I like the Malwarebytes anti-Malware program for my laptop, but unless I'm mistaken the only mobile app they have is for Androids, not iphones. Again, any recommendations would be much appreciated.

Answer:Good anti-virus and anti-malware software for iphone 5s

The reason they have more anti-virus apps for Android is because the Android platform is more vulnerable to malware. On Android, you are able to download and install a variety of things from unknown sources.

For the iPhone, however, anti-virus isn't really needed unless you have jailbroken your device.

Hope this helped.

As many of you know(quite a few don't) what EICAR is, this is a open poll to see what programs pick it up and what programs fail the basic tests.

I am conducting this poll because A-Squared failed to see this on a scan, but MSE picked it up before it could be downloaded.
So after you take the poll, Post what you used to test it with and results.

What is everyones preference for business/corporate deployed anti-virus/anti-malware? I've used the following products, all the most recent versions available of the corporate/business/enteprise product: Symantec, Trend, McAfee, ESET NOD32. I've alo used Sophos, but that was about 3 years ago. Also used Webroot Spysweeper in terms of a dedicated anti-malware product.

A few that I'm interested in knowing some more about are Kaspersky and VIPRE Enterprise. Anyone have experience with them in the centrally controlled corporate environment?

I want to learn more about Kaspersky especially as their engines are used in a lot of products which take multi-engine approach, and their windows client has the basic stuff (anti-virus/anti-malware/e-mail protection) plus some things that are not in cetain other clients (desktop firewall, and web protection).

Also looking for other recommendations.

Hi malfun9 From what I read, I understand that you are trying to install RogueKiller (and not use the portable version?), Malwarebytes Anti-Malware, AVG Free and Microsoft Safe (what is it?). Then you get a UAC prompt (the message asking if you want to allow the following program to make changes to your computer) and after you accept, nothing happens (no window opens or anything). However, if you repeat the same steps with CCleaner, AdwCleaner and the Microsoft Malicious Software Removal Tool, it works.Let's see what is causing this, follow the instructions below please.MiniToolBoxDownload MiniToolBox and move the executable file to your Desktop;Right-click on MiniToolBox.exe and select Run as Administrator;Check the following options:List Installed Programs;List Last 10 Event Viewer Errors;Once this is done, click on Go and wait for the scan to complete;Once the scan is complete, a log will open. I have about 45-50 PCs/Notebooks that I need to have Anti-Virus/Anti-Malware protection for. We are currently using Norton Internet Security 2010 (10-user packs). I am trying to figure out whether I should stay with Norton or switch to something else, but I'm not sure what else to consider (she says with chagrin). The computers are all running Windows XP (Pro and Home) SP3. We are fairly lenient with Internet access. I would think I need a firewall, real-time anti-virus (and anti-malware?) protection, schedulable system scanning among other things. But I'm not sure what those other things are. Could anyone give me some suggestions are to what I should look for/look at? I am considering Trend Micro, Kaspersky, McAfee, Norton, and MS Security Essentials or AVG Free version.

It seems that so many anti-virus products are decent and do a fair job of protecting your computer, whether or not you pay for them. And all reviews I've read over the years usually conclude that free is best, because the "extra stuff" you get really don't help all that much unless you are prone to catching viruses.

So... it all comes down to risky on-line behavior.

That provokes this question: What's the safest & secure way to browse the Internet, without catching a virus? The idea being, that when you go "off the beaten path" to a site you don't normally view, is there a "sandbox" way to browse the site such that you will be able to:
Get a warning if the site is unsafe, or seems like it is trying to run malwareBe completely protected -- meaning, scripts and such can't run and the site is totally unable to do anything

Any advice on how that can be done? I'm sure there are techniques out there, but before I start investing time to research, maybe someone here has already done it and can share. Thanks!

Answer:Most anti-virus/anti-malware method of browsing

Hi, some quick thoughts:
Sandboxie - will sandbox your browser. Have a look.
Avast (free) - now comes with its own sandboxed browser Avast safezone

Extensions like WOT indicate site status, and Avast (free) gives a clear go-no-go indication (green ticks)
Firefox has an extension that will block scripts completely.

Hello,
One of the family's machines recently ( few months ago ) was force fed Windows 10 Home.
Typically on our other machines ( Windows 7 and 8 ), I use Avast Free to run in the background and SUPERAntispyware and Malwarebytes I run as standalones. I use a Limited User account for any internet facing activities.
I see Windows 10 comes with Windows Defender.
Is this enough?
What's the general consensus if there is one.
Any suggestions would be appreciated.
Thank you for your time.

How long could you last if you were a normal PC user without an active Anti-Virus, Anti-Malware or a Firewall before getting attacked by someone?

Answer:How long could you last without Anti-Virus, Anti-Malware or Firewall?

Too many variables involved to be able to give any sort of credible answer. Someone who has a well configured browser and very safe surfing habits, would probably last longer than someone who is heavily involved with social media and peer to peer applications. As one comparative example.

Answer:Most Improved Anti-Virus of All Time [POLL]

I voted other and most of you can allready guess what my answer will be : AVG. for years the products where mediocre and the company got bad credit for forcing " secure search " on users and this got the many , many disgruntled costomers. for years the AV was signature based detection , leaving them trailling heavilly behind most of the competitors. if you will ask most people , they will tell they will not touch AVG with a ten foot pole , stil believing that the 2016 version is still mediocre. I firmly believe that the company has come a long way and the 2,5 years of work they spent into the devellopment of their artificial intelligence engine and crowd cloud module ( leaving the collecting the user data aside ) is steadilly paying of. a small example is the boottime protection test done by @cruelsister. AVG still has a long road to go to fully perfect themselfs , but the product is getting there

Hello. I am working on a friends machine that seems to have a nasty infection. This machine is a dedicated server running Windows Server 2003 Web. Everything I am doing to it is via remote desktop which is making it a little more of a challenge. Web browsing on the server was incredibly slow when he asked me to take a look at it. I figured he was infected with something so I was going to try and install a few things on it and run a few scans, only to find that all of the sites that I found to use are blocked or disable by whatever is infecting the server. Any attempt to access an anti-virus or anti-malware website results in a message stating server cannot be found. Any other website can be accessed though.

There is an FTP server running on this machine, so I do have that availability to FTP to the server to get any file or program to it that I need to. Please just let me know what you need from me and I will get it up here as soon as I can. I am a fairly experienced user and can grasp things pretty easily. Thanks for your time, I greatly appreciate it.

If it doesn't block you from softpedia or download.com, the get the anti virus software from their sites instead. Hopefully it won't block them. When they are downloaded, rename the file names.

I currently use Norton Internet Security Suite 2006. I just purchased a new Think Pad and was wondering what the difference is between an "Anti Virus" utility and a "Internet Suite" which includes anti virus, firewall, spam filters, ect...................................
Thanks, John

Answer:Anti Virus utility "vs" Internet Security Suite

You pretty much named the difference in your post. A "system security suite" is one which bundles all the required tools for complete system protection, like anti-virus, firewall, anti-spyware, file cleaners, registry cleaners, etc.

I have seen it advertised on Major Geeks and other third-party hosting sites but write ups and reviews never impressed me.EMCO Malware Destroyer by Softpedia...To start with, you should note that it does not provide active protection, heuristic scans or an active shield of some sort. This utility will only search for baddies currently loaded in the memory or running processes that are infected...Malware Destroyer is designed for manual virus checks and the fast scans recommend it, but bear in mind that it is mainly aimed at non-techy users and will only provide an occasional supplemental layer of protection.

I was told, you dont need it. If you have a firewall, and just scan the files as you go etc. I have never gotten a virus through email cause I simply know what Im opening. Do you run NAV at startup or in the background or do you keep it idle.

Also please recomend me another AV program cause Norton eats too much ram god.

I'm new here. I just found this site on Google search because I just got a second virus, or maybe its the old one popping up again, I don't know.

First off, the old one: Basically a couple of months ago I was downloading some free software from a website and I got from what I can decipher the Security Tool virus. I looked online and tried a couple of methods of getting rid of it one being doing some stuff (I don't remember exactly what) and deleting the file and one being downloading a program. I thought that they worked, but there must be remnants because my ISP put a secured sites block on me because weeks later it was sending out bulk email. Anyways, I was just living with that until I was going to take it in somewhere.

Now I don't know how I did it this time, but I keep getting stuff popping up all over the place saying Vista AntiMalware - Unregistered Version and telling me I need to upgrade. Another thing says Keylogger Detected. Another one keeps popping up asking me to buy an unnamed product with a green check mark on the front. It says I have a Spyware infection where all the startup icons appear. It says I have harmful viruses.

It flashes something called Trojanaspx.js.win32.

What's the first step I should take?

Recently I have had some BSOD problems with my computer. After posting to the forums my crash dumps, I was recommended to try uninstalling AVG as it could be the culprit. So far so good and I have not had any blue screens.

Upon uninstalling AVG I have been using Microsoft Security Essentials. I have also heard really good things about Malwarebytes and have being using that as well just the free version though. My question being, is running MSE and Malwarebytes enough protection or should I be using some other type of protection? Should I upgrade to the pro version of Malwarebytes to get the realtime protection? I have heard mixed things about MSE so thats why I asked.

Answer:Anti Virus/ Anti-Malware for Windows 8.1

I had the same problem myself, everything from blue screens to system freezing and / or taking big performance hits when I used other antivirus products. I have tried most if not all the better known antivirus solutions and every one of them messes with 8.1 in one way or another. The thing is once you uninstall them the system runs fine, kind of makes you wonder if Microsoft has done this on purpose to push their own security software.

From what I understand Windows Defender is not the same as Microsoft Security Essentials, I have been told it is kind of a step up and works better, this remains to be seen as I have had no alerts from it as of yet.
If you can afford it I would go with Malwarebytes Pro, if not for nothing else for the real time protection, I have it and it has saved my butt more than one.

One more thing you want to consider is with all the Cryptographic Ransom viruses in the wild these days is Crypto Prevent, it is supposed to block all those Cryptology ransom viruses, you can get it here : CryptoPrevent | Computer Technician - PC Repair Software |Foolish IT LLC the free version you have to update manually, the paid version will update itself.

You can also try Hitman Pro Alert beta which is basically the same thing as Crypto Prevent, you can get that here: HitmanPro.Alert CryptoGuard - SurfRight . There is no need to run both, one or the other is fine.

I am usually able to resolve this sort of problem on my own, but this one has me baffled. I got hit with a bogus anti-virus worm. I immediately chased the files that were created the moment the worm attacked. As has happened before, zone labs and malwarebytes were rendered inoperable. In the past when this has happened to others, in was able to kill the task causing the problem in task manager, reinstall my anti-virus and anti-malware programs, delete or quarantine the virus, clean the registry with registry fix, and everything was back to normal.

This new worm/Trojan is a bit more sinister. At one point, it was creating a task that included a : in the task name. I could find the filename for that appeared prior to the colon, but could not kill the task. When I try to install zone alarm, it would tell me that it was having problems disabling my existing version. I tried to delete zonealarm but it failed. With malwarebytes, I was able to reinstall, but 10 seconds in, it crashed. When I try to rerun malwarebytes, I am told I don't have permission to run the program. I tried Emsisoft anti-malware. Seems to install okay, but the minute I try to do a scan, windows crashes to blue screen.

One consistent item I have found in each anti-virus directory is a file with no name. I see a file icon, but I cannot delete the file nor rename it (the rename box opens, but errors).

I'm sorry, I forgot to mention that I am running XP Professional sp3.

The free version of this software is fairly popular.
Lately, I've become interested in the full version.

I've been using Avira for a couple years now and have been fairly happy with it. However, recently I did a virus clean out of a laptop for someone, and a-Squared caught a whole lot more stuff than Avira did. Including rootkits and tojans (not just spy/adware).

So I've downloaded the 30 day trial of the full version to check it out. Apparently it not only does normal malware guarding, but also has IDS features that constantly monitor programs for malicious behavior. This seems like a very excellent feature.

Does anyone have any long-term experience with the full version of this software.
I'm also disappoint to see it's not included in the AV-Comparative tests.

Answer:a-Squared Anti-Virus/Anti-Malware/IDS

Well, false positives often give the impression of a piece of software "catching" more things than another piece of software, so use caution. I have however used A-Squared in virus searches before with reasonable success. It would be interesting to see AV-Comparatives.org include it in their tests.

I have learned the most about security from this site. Right now , I am using 3 different products to protect my laptop. First of all, I use Norton Internet Security for my anti virus, It does a good job for me. The product that I am most impressed by now is Super Anti Spyware, I tried a free full 15 day trial, that has real protection, scheduled scans, and you can set everything how you like, when it reverted to a free device, I really missed it. So, I signed up for a year, got a great deal 9.99 for a year of full protection. It is not a Anti virus, it is an anti-malware program, so It does not interfere with Norton or vice versa. Finally, I have a free security patch program called Secunia, use version 2,lets you know that everything is working right or not. 3 good programs, plus coming here for advice, and I feel pretty safe in this wild world of the internet.

Answer:Favorite anti-virus, anti-malware

My personal favortites, and what I recommend to my customers, are Avast! Free(http://www.avast.com/en-us/index) for anti-virus and Malwarebytes Anti Malware (https://www.malwarebytes.org/) for, well, malware removal.

If a customer brings in a reallt infected machine, then I tend to use Kaspersky Antivirus Rescue disc (http://support.kaspersky.com/us/viruses/rescuedisk/) or HitmanPro (http://www.surfright.nl/en/home/)

Very few virus/malware/adware problems I've not seen stopped by those. As a side note, Avast has gotten *really* bloated (like Norton and McAfee) for the default installation, and I usually install only the file shield, leaving out the rest. Makes it lean and fast while still providing excellent protection.

Sorry this has taken a while to get back to you. Original post is here.I was able to run the DDS application with no problems, but GMER was another story. On the first run I received several pop up boxes telling me data was lost even though the application completed. However, it would not let me save the file. The second run resulted in my computer restarting itself. I was not watching as this happened, so I am assuming I got another blue screen. Last night/this morning, the third run is the charm. To restate the problem, I was attacked by a bogus anti-virus worm. My zone labs and malwarebytes were rendered inoperable. All anti-virus/malware programs have a file in their directory with a blank file name that cannot be deleted. With malwarebytes, I was able to reinstall, but 10 seconds in, it crashed. When I try to rerun malwarebytes, I am told I don't have permission to run the program. I tried Emsisoft anti-malware. I'm helping my brother-in-law by trying to get his computer back up and running. He apparently had Police Pro. I was only finding small remnants of it, not a lot of obvious files.

At first no executables could be run, but I figured that out. Now everything runs ok, but I cannot run ANY antivirus software, including Hijackthis. I have tried:

Kaspersky online
SuperAntispyware
AVG Free 8.5
Spybot Search & Destroy (which I could install, but not run)
Malbytes anti-malware (which I cannot install)

An interesting additional symptom: whenever I run Windows Explorer to look for files, it also opens my web browser and sends me to 188.165.18.19, which says "POPEO Info Auctions." I don't click on anything, but it keeps hitting that site.

I have looked in task manager processes, and no suspect processes are running. All Police Pro files and registry entries have been deleted.

What else can I run or do to be able to run antivirus programs again?

Thanks in advance,
Kerry

More information is needed.

It is not unusual, these days, to find some "file protection" bundled with these usb flash drives which can cause AV programs to issue a false positive ... is this file "protector exe" or "protector.exe" ... ?

Unfortunately, while I personally think both KIS/KAV & NOD32 are excellent programs, the fact is, no one solution is 100% effective.

It is nice, however, that we can use the likes of the free online AV scanners, just to set our minds at rest ...

Hi all!

I am always looking for new Anti-Malware tools to try in order to clean my computer for malware, given that every said tool has its own different database and as such will yield different results.

Answer:What is your opinion on the Anti-Malware tool Norton Power Eraser?

I personally believe that you are running an overkill setup right now. Adding one more tool to your personal check-up list won't do anything to be honest.I usually never run standalone Antimalware unless I suspect I'm infected with something. There's no need to run them daily, weekly or even monthly if you don't suspect that you are infected.

Answer:In your opinion, what's the best anti-virus on the market ?

Hi tarheel ladybug,

These forums are littered with the answers to this popular question.

The answer isn't straightforward because even the best antiviruses and antispyware programs are absolutely useless when a new, fast-spreading infection appears.

What you should look for is an auto-updating antivirus and preferably a free one. Free does not mean useless it just means it does what it says and nothing else. Recommended here are Avast and Antivir.

Auto-updating means that the most up to date signatures (this means that the virus is in the database and can be removed) are automatically added to your product.

None of this means nothing unless you also regularly scan your PC. Once a week is a good average.

The antispywares that are the most updated and powerful and recommended here are Superantispyware and Spyblaster. These are free and good programs and also they don't require you to know anything about viruses.

I would provide you with a link to more info but I get the feeling you just want others recommendations so I will just say that I use Avast and Superantispyware and leave it to the BC crowd to add to this...

I had a question I can't find on the fourms, maybe I'm not looking right, but my question is can i run Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware and Microsoft Essentials Anti-spyware and Virus protection at the same time?

I just want to be sure.

Answer:Anti-virus and Anti-Malware?

You can run them both, but it may slow things down since both have 'real time' protection...if you have more than 2GB of ram, you may not notice any lag.

1. Do I need a particular anti-malware software , in addition to Anti-virus?

2. Is the paid version of Avast good and sufficient enough to reduce risks?

3. Is "malware" a collective term that includes ransomware, adware, spyware ......
or are they all different things that require another anti-ransomware, anti-adware, or anti-spyware software alone??

4. If I want to protect my computer from internet attacks, do I need another internet security software?
I am so confused about what I should buy or install to minimize the risks of my PC infecting with all those bad things. I have no idea what I should get started

Answer:Anti-virus and Anti-malware??

There's plenty of posts on this. Bear in mind, I'm not overly adventurous out on the internet. Following some here, I've settled on Windows Defender & Firewall with Malwarebytes and AdwCleaner. Not telling what you should do, just what I've done.

Good luck.

Hi, I was wondering what people regarded as the best Anti-Virus software package available, relative to a Home PC.

I use to have Norton a while back, but when i got a new PC, I switched over to McAfee. When that expired, I tried the trial period of NOD32, and so far i've liked that the best. Right now, i'm using the free AOL anti-virus: 'Active Virus Shield,' but I don't trust the reliability of it. I was thinking about purchasing a NOD subscription.

Anyone have a recommendation?

And it's not aol that's the problem. it's Zone alarm.

I'm missing a file called playgifo.ocx which zone alarm deleted from aol's spyware program.

zone alarm is also not updating it's definitions for spyware. how do i fix this?

can anyone tell me how to check for spyware using another tool?

and is the firewall with sp2 built in good enough by itself?

Answer:anti Spyware conflict between AOL and Zone Alarm security suite.

Hi and welcome to TSF

You can check for spyware on line here:-

http://housecall.trendmicro.com/

How many firewalls are you running?

You should not run more than one at a time as it's asking for trouble to run two or more... I don't use AOL myself, but I see they have their own firewall:-
http://www.aol.co.uk/products/broadb...omoCode=228937

I would decide on one or the other and then clear any others off your PC.

The microsoft spyware program is pretty good and free, however, it runs in the background, so again, I would keep to just one spyware program that runs continuously to keep things uncomplicated.

Spybot and Adaware (the free versions) only run when you set them off, so you could keep those on board.

Trend Micro Housecall stays online and is free and effective.

I would suggest re-installing zonealarm if you intend to keep it.

It's been recommended that I use an anti-virus program that isn't a suite. Any sugguestions. I just downloaded Avast Free Antivirus 5.0.545.100524 and don't think this is the right choice.

There were 2 recommendations

Increase ram to 1g and switch from Norton 2009 internet security.

I've ordered the ram and now need suggestions on AV

Thanks

Answer:Anti-virus software that isn't a suite?

I have personally been using Microsoft Security Essentials. It doesnt slow my system at all. It doesnt work for XP. Only Vista and Win7.

There is nothing wrong with Avast, unless you just don't like it.

You may also wish to try Avira or one from this list:

Looking for the best suite avail. Have norton 360v4, but have never felt truly safe with it.

Was looking at Kaspersky, Eset, or the like.

I have 2 computers that I need to keep safe, but maybe a 3rd as well. I do download movies and things from torrents from time to time.

Price isnt so much an issue. I just want something that WORKS, both proactively and retroactively if needed. Prefer an all in 1 suite. Thanks.

Answer:Anti-virus software suite

I swear by ESET AV, had it years. I've tried their Security suite as well (as a trial). Only reason I didn't upgrade to it is that I'm quite happy with Windows Firewall. I back this up / another angle of attack with Malwarebytes'.
