Headphone & Microphone Combo Audio Jack

Question: Headphone & Microphone Combo Audio Jack

I have just bought a HP Pavilion 15 n-278sa laptop. It comes with a single 3.5mm port which is used for both audio out and line in. The laptop will work fine when outputting sound through the jack and a pair of headphones. However when i try to use the same port as a line in to record sound from an external device i am having some problems. I am trying to connect my mixer to the laptop using a standard lead, red & white one end and 3.5mm jack on the other. At first I was not getting any change whatsoever under the Recording tab in Sound settings. It just says 'not plugged in' under the microphone. After doing some research I found that the lead I was using, a 3 section plug, would not work and that was the reason there was no change when i plugged it in. I bought a 4 section plug & eureka, the laptop recognised the lead & showed this on the Recording tab. I thought my problem was sorted but this was not the case at all. As soon as I plug the red & white end of the lead into the output on the mixer, the laptop screen displays the 'not plugged in' message again as though I have unplugged the lead at the 3.5mm jack end. This makes no sense to me whatsoever?!? How can it recognise the lead is plugged in with no problems but then go back to not recognising it as soon as the other end is plugged into an external output?! Surely there must be a way of rectifying this as currently its impossible to record any sound on the laptop from an external device, in this case, my mixer. The main reason I bought this laptop is so I can record the mixes I do. It is literally of no use to me with this problem. I had no issues with this on my old laptop as it had separate 3.5mm jacks for input & output. Please can someone advise me of a way around this problem. Kind regards,Dave

Hi All: i have thus far been unable to confirm if the headphones jack on the right side is a headphones ONLY jack or a combo microphone/headphones jack.   It would make no sense to put in a headphones ONLY jack, but stranger things have happened in this world. I've seen conflicting reports.    May I ask for a definitive confirmation please? Thanks in advance.

How is the microphone jack on the front panel wired? I was told this jack works as Microphone and LINE IN. Is the jack a 3-pole stereo jack or 4-pole jack? If it is 4-pole, does it comply with CTIA standard wiring (Ring2 is common and Sleeve is microphone)?

Answer:Audio combo jack vs headphone/earphone with mic and speaker connector

Welcome to the Lenovo Community !

On your computer the audio jacks along with the USB port are mounted on a card that is separate from the motherboard.  The two are then connected with a ribbon cable.  If your headphone jack is inoperable with more than one pair of headphones and the USB port does not work would be a good indication of a problem with the card.

Just to rule out a possible hardware conflict try doing a BIOS reset.  Just do this.......
1. Unplug the charger / adapter. 2. Remove the battery. 3. Press and hold the Power Button for 15 seconds. 4. Re-install the battery, plug in the charger / adapter if needed and power up the system to see if the problem was resolved.

If the reset did not correct the problem then I would suspect either the audio card is faulty or the ribbon cable has become disconnected.  In that case I would suggest you contact Lenovo Support for additional service especially if your warranty is still active.  You can find the phone number for Lenovo Support in your country or area by using the link below....http://support.lenovo.com/us/en/supportphonelist_alt1

I have a G710 Lenovo laptop. It comes with a combo audio jack. I tried plugging my microphone it in but it wouldnt pick it up, it would only register the headphones. I bought a splitter for it and it still wont pick up the microphone. I know the microphone works because if i use a USB adapter, it works fine.

My laptop only has one combo audio/microphone jack, and I can't get the microphone to work at all. I just bought a new headset that came with an audio/microphone splitter specifically for the purpose of using it on this laptop. While the output works fine, the microphone input is absolutely ignored.

I am 100% positive this is an audio/microphone splitter (and not just an audio splitter) as it has 3 rings on the end of it (indicating that it is compatible with using a microphone), and one of the input jacks even has a microphone icon on it. Realtek Settings are nowhere to be found in Control Panel, and I couldn't seem to find anything in the system sound settings that would help me either.

I've already spent money on this new headset, so as you can imagine I'm pretty frustrated that this is not working, and I really, really don't want to spend any more money. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Hello all, firstly; apologies for any headaches caused, however, until I buy a capture card I'm recording gameplay through a camera (the quality to my surprise isn't bad either). However picking up the audio requires me to turn up the TV volume quite a lot and also the mic (on my headset) to 100 + 20dB boost in Control Panel > Sound > Recording. As you can imagine, audio is average at best.

So, a cheap solution I thought would be to buy something like this, but I'm not entirely sure it'll work?

The plan is to basically plug my headsets microphone jack to the red/pink one which will input the audio from that, but for the green, Plug in a male to male audio jack (one of these, which I already have):

So here's where it gets even more complicated:

If the above will work (or you can link me to something that does what I'm wanting), I want to actually listen to the TV audio through my headsets headphones. A simple solution here would be to tick "Listen to this Device" in Control Panel > Sound > Recording, however that also means listening to my voice as well (which I find very offputting).

No it should go in. We have been getting reports of tight jacks. Don't know if it's a quality control issue. Try some different ones and insert more firmly than normally.
If none will go in all the way, but you do hear the audio, I wouldn't be too concerned. If not getting audio (the selection popup does not appear) because it won't go in, then contact tech support or send it back.

Hi,

I am using a Tiny Media Notebook PIII, 700, Windows 98 SE. The computer is about four years old, and by now the headphone jack, which I use as my sound out port, is about fryed. The contacts have deteriated, and I can not replace the jack, as it is connected to the motherboard. Thus, aside from opting for a usb sound out, such as taking up the Soundblaster MP3+ option, I was wondering if I could reprogram the way in which sound is connected to external devices such as headphones. There are three jacks on the front of my computer: the headphone jack, the microphone jack and er I think it is a line out jack - the later jack which I have never used. Is there anyway I can swop/substitute the connection via the headphone jack say for the microphone jack or line out jack. Is there anyway I could do this?

Answer:Substituting the headphone jack with the microphone jack

No, afraid not. Each jack has it's own circuitry which provides for the needed resistance and other parameters. What you could do, if you got to the mobo itself, is to physically replace the jack but that's a major pain on a laptop.

You can try two things, one is to use alcohol and a Q-Tip to thoroughly clean the jack, then use a small bit of steel wool to sand inside with and then again with the alcohol and two, if the jack's worn too big for a tight connection, is to go to Radio Shack and buy a plug in adapter for that size jack. Some come with a slightly oversized male end and then you could plug into the female end and have a tight connection.

So, I have a laptop with a single headphone jack, and it has the little symbol with both an headphone and a mic.
I have bought a V-moda boom pro mic. The microphone is integrated in the cable, and the tip that goes in the jack has four "parts", as it should be. The headphones work just fine, the moment I plugged it in the sound came to my headphones, but the computer just keeps using the integrated mic instead of the one on the cable. I have checked the sound settings, nothing changes, neither in the Realtek manager.

The microphone came with a splitter, and i even tried plugging in only the mic part, but still nothing.

unfornatly, i don't have any other exterernal mic to test the jack with, and as far as I know, everything is updated

Hi, I have a Thinkpad T440p (model 20AW-A00QIW) and am observing some strange behavior with the headphone combo jack.  Sound is routed through different sound devices depending on docked vs un-docked. When the system is docked (Ultra dock) and my headphones are plugged into the jack on the left side, the main speakers mute and sound comes through the headphone.  In Sound, this is "Speakers/HP" device. But as soon as I undock the machine, music blasts on the on-board speakers.   I have to stop play and set the "Realtek HD Audio 2nd output" device as default to get sound via the headphones. I have had numerous thinkpads in the past and this is the first one with this feature... Windows 8.1 upgraded from the stock Lenovo Win8 image (cd's) which came with the machine.   Windows and Lenovo system update are up2date. Any ideas,Tom

Hey guys, I've been looking everywhere for a solution to this: Headphones Working Fine, Mics aren't...But totally no luck. I can see that a lot of people are having this problem and posting it on various forums, without any valid solutions or workarounds.
The Problem: Asus Laptop with Windows 8.1 with only one audio input won't read any external Headphone's MIC.
Description:
1. The Internal MIC works fine and it works everytime even when I plug in an external one.
2. When I plug in external headphone (Headphone's got 2 jacks, black which is for sound and red which is for recording) into the Only ONE audio input there is, Windows gives a popup with its current Audio devices plugged in but it just wont read the MIC. This is what pops up when I plug in the external MIC or headphone.

3. Now, When I go to the lower right corner and select Recording Devices from the sound panel, it won't show any external or added device when I plug in the new device. It would just show my internal MIC and something called Stereo MIX, but not my Microphone.

4. Okay, Now when I check Device Manager, and try to update all the Realtek Audio drivers it would just say "everything is latest with latest drivers installed", which is obvious since Windows 8.1 has bundled everything with my laptop.

5. Now you must be thinking of a solution like since my headphone has 2 wires (the red and the black), why not use a Audio Splitter which looks something like this... , I even bought ... Read more

Answer:Windows Won't recognize Combo Mic/Headphone Jack

The splitter you show will not work with a PC. Its designed for an iPhone, PS4, etc. A PC plug is only Tip, Ring and Sleeve. The one you show is Tip, Ring, Ring, Sleeve. A PC microphone requires +5VDC, which is on the Ring connection to work.

Usually, PC's with only one jack, can be either but not both.

Hi, I own a new X1 Carbon (with the terrible adaptive function keys), and my combo audio/mic jack does not seem to work properly. Specifically, when I try to plug in headphones (or use an application like Skype) while the sound is running from the speakers, it does not switch. Conversely, if I start a video wearing headphones, and unplug them, the sound does not come out of the speakers. Can someone please advise how to troubleshoot this? Thanks in advance.

Answer:X1 Carbon combo headphone/mic jack does not work

Hi Dave0888,

Welcome to Lenovo Community!

As per your query we understood that you are facing the issue with Audio port on ThinkPad X1 Carbon.

Please set the default setting on Realtek High Definition audio application from control panel.
If you are unable to find the application or set the application, please download the driver from Lenovo Support page and install it.

Also please download ThinkVantage System Update utility and install it, and after installing it please run the application so that it will check for the latest drivers and automatically install it.

After installing all the application please restart the system and check it once.

Below is the link to enter the downloads page and download latest application accordingly, please click on "Select Product" then in "QUICK PATH" enter the MTM no. select the exact model.

Hello Eight Forums.

My trouble is the audio output through headphones - background is louder than foreground (especially in music - I often cannot hear the vocals at all; movies however are mostly fine, for reasons unknown to me; but generally, the sound is always different in some way).

I only have one pair of headphones to test it with. However these always worked fine with previous machines, and still do work fine with my iPhone 4. Although they are surely not the case, I cannot with confidence say that if it were a loudspeaker instead things wouldn't have been different.

So this is either a software or a hardware issue.

Software

My computer (details at the bottom) came with a SoundBlaster X-Fi MB3 equalizer program and RealTek High Def Audio drivers. I've uninstalled SoundBlaster hoping it would fix the issue (I didn't need an extra program like that anyway) but alas to no avail. Updating the RealTek drivers did no good still.

The only thing I haven't touched is the ghostly NVIDIA Virtual Audio Device (can it be the source of my trouble?) - I only first noticed it now when copy/pasting the Belarc data. I'll try and find out about it in the meanwhile.

Hardware

I wonder if it perhaps has something to do with my audio jack (laptop's brand new, but you can never know). I have what appears to be mic, headphone, S/PDIF and line in jacks... Is there a way to use the microphone or the line-in to test the headphones? To see if the headphone out is broken.

Answer:Messed up headphone audio; want to check headphone jack

First, the "My System Specs" is where you fill in what you have.

Does the internal speakers on the laptop work? Is the audio OK on the internal speakers?

The SoundBlaster program(s) is a software enhancement to the basic audio chip (ReaklTek). Many PC's now come with some type of enhancement such as the SoundBlaster or in the case of HP PC's its "Beats Audio".

Well, I uninstalled my audio drivers and noticed that there was a red led shining from inside the 3.5mm headphone jack, which I assume is a mini optical audio (digital) combo 3.5mm audio (analog) jack, and I am figuring that it determins if there is an optical plug or not using drivers, which is why it turned on when I unistalled my audio drivers. I would like to know for sure before I go and buy a mini optical to toslink adpater cable so I can get better audio quality out (the digital interface does not suffer from the interference that the analog does right?). I did some research (research is a bit of an overstatement) and found no sites that mentioned it, so I have decided to turn to the forums. So, is this an optical jack combo? And, how will it work in terms of the drivers, will it just auto select? Thanks.

hi SoapForBrains,

Thanks for posting!

You will need to purchase a combo jack splitter
This is an Example

It  Separates the Mic and the earphone connection to prevent grounding issues caused by using a single input mic/headset.

I have a headset set with a mic. It has 3.5mm plugs for the mic and the speakers. Just recently they stopped working together. What I mean is if I have either one of them plugged in, that one works. If I have both plugged in, the sound manager appears as if neither of them are plugged in. I've tried other headphones with the jacks and get the same result. I've tried reinstalling the driver, doing a system restore and using CCleaner to clean my registry. I've also messed around with just about every setting in the audio manager. Anyone have any ideas? It's odd that they work independently, which leads me to believe that the insertion detection is working just fine.

I have a Toshiba Satellite R845-S95 with Windows 7.

Hello. I have a W510 with mini dock series 3. The Mini Dock has separate jacks for headphone and microphone instead of the combo jack thats on the pc. I have tried to use the jacks on the dock but I wont work. Any suggestions??

Answer:Mini Dock 3 Headphone and Microphone Jack

hey Wesper, curious to know, if you plug in a normal head/earphone to the Mini Dock's audio jack, does it work correctly? And does the ear/headphone set work with the W510 audio jack ?I would suggest, undocking and redocking the Mini Dock. At the same time, do go to >>http://www-307.ibm.com/pc/support/site.wss/MIGR-74582.htmlupdate your system too

Hey, first of all, just saying that I'm new to this site. I think it's really cool though, that theres a tech support site that actually has a lot of people on. Anyway, I own a Dell Dimension Desktop, A Gateway (Dont know what brand) laptop, and my friend has a Mac (dont know the brand). Anyway, me and my friend are doing a radio show for school, and we need microphones. I have USB headsets, and we could use those, except that we can only use one at a time or else they override eachother, and that doesnt work well. We also each have those little mics that come with the computer, but we still dont have a way to use both at the same time. We were wondering though, is there any way to use a splitter like that of a headphone jack for a CD player, to split the input of a microphone port? Also, I notice that with my USB headsets, i get "white noise" aka static in the backround when I am not talking, and fainter when I am talking. Will I not get the white noise with a regular mic as opposed to a USB mic? Please if anyone knows the answer, reply. Thanks...

Answer:Using a headphone jack splitter in a microphone port...

You can't connect two microphones like two sets of headphones. You'll need some sort of mixer. If you have an electronic mic that has a high enough signal level, you could put on into the Line-In jack, and the other into the Mic jack.

I have  a yogabook, and I want to use an external microphone to record audio. I read somewhere that the audio port is a combo headphone/microphone, but it didn't work with my samsung's combo headphone. I wonder if this information is correct? If not, do you know if there is any way to use an external microphone?

I was wondering if I could direct my microphone input strait to my headphone jack so the sound input could be heard on headphones. Also, could I disable the feature that turns off my built-in speakers when I plug in headphones. I have a hp pavilion dv9000 with vista installed. any help?

Answer:Solved: microphone to headphone jack and speakers

I use an external mixer for this kind of thing- that way I can not only use the headphones to monitor the inputs, but my mixer allows me to select one input among many while not disturbing the mix.

Even an inexpensive mixer will have multiple mic or high level inputs and many will have the ability to add reverb or other effects. They can also feed one or more computers for recording (and/or backup of main recording).

Anyone knows if the microphone/headset combo jack on ThinkPad P50 is a TRRS jack (Tip/Ring/Ring/Sleeve)? What I tried to do is to connect ThinkPad P50 with iPhone 6 so that one side's output is the other side's input.  So I can record the audio. From my research, iPhone's jack is TRRS spec.  I can easily find TRRS splitter on eBay, for example, here's a splitter with female plugs: http://www.ebay.com/itm/371299679312 If ThinkPad P50 is using the same TRRS spec, I can just buy another TRRS splitter with male plugs. Thanks!

Hi, I have a brand new U310 Touch that I am trying to use for Skype. The built in microphone is working OK but whenever I try to connect a headset through the combo jack the recording volume is really low.  There is definitely some input coming from the microphone but the volume is just really low. The problem seems significantly worse on Skype compared with Sound Recorder, but is not great on either. I have tried all the settings I can find in "manage audio settings" but nothing seems to work. The Lenovo user guide somewhat cryptically mentions "Recording may not be supported if third-party headphones or headsets are connected, due to different industry standards" but it doesn't give any details about what standards will work. I have tried three different headsets (the bundled headset form Samsung Galaxy SII and HTC One plus a set of Bose QC15) so I don't there there is anything wrong with the headsets. Any help or ideas would be much appreciated. Thanks Alex

Loaded all software updates, followed all the instructions and still would not record from external mic. Finally found the problem. The imput jack on the laptop is a piece of junk and does not work. How I found this out was while plugging in the four pin connector I noticed the mic icon flash so I slowly removed the four pin connector and the external mic started to work. However as soon as I let go of the four pin connector it fell out and would not stay in the imput jack. All the way in would not work ,half way in works but wil not stay in place. So how do I get this repaired?  I now have a workaround for this.Got a USB mic and the software recognized it.However after doing some more web searches to solve the output (input) jack problem I found that this is not just a HP thing.Seems other manufactures such as Dell are just as bad. This does not excuse Hp of using a crappy part; probably just to save a few pennies.

Hi there @Harley5560,  Thank you for visiting the HP Support Forums and Welcome! This is a great site to get answers and ask questions. I read your post on the Forum. From what I understand you are trying to use a Headset with a Microphone built in and you are not getting results from the microphone portion. I read that you updated your last post to say that you purchased a USB microphone and that is working for your flawlessly.  Here is a document I found called Resolving Headphones and Headset Problems (Windows 8).   If you were to look at your HP ENVY 15 Notebook PC and HP ENVY TouchSmart 15 Notebook PC - Maintenance and Service Guide, it says "Connects optional powered stereo speakers, headphones, earbuds, a headset, or a television audio cable. Also connects an optional headset microphone. This jack does not support optional microphone-only devices". NOTE: Be sure that the device cable has a 4- conductor connector that supports both audio-out (headphone) and audio-in (microphone). Did this reply resolve your issue or answer your question? If yes, then please share the good news! Hello, I'd like to know how to enable my front microphone/headphone entrance (the green and pink ones) on Windows 7

Thanks =)

Answer:How do I enable my front microphone and headphone jack with Windows 7?

The front panel should automatically be enabled, providing the cable for the front panel audio is connected to the motherboard, and you are using the correct sound driver. I assume you have Realtek as I used to have a P8Z77 LE Plus motherboard and it had Realtek on board audio.

On many PC cases there are two connections available for front panel audio, "HD Audio" and "AC 97". The HD Audio is preferred as it as some jack sensing functions that the older AC97 does not have.

I looked at the Realtek HD Audio Manager on my system and there is no option to enable or disable the front panel jacks. There is an option to mute or not mute the speakers when a headset is plugged in but that's all.

Even if you only have the generic, basic function, Windows installed High Definition Audio drivers installed instead of the correct hardware drivers you should still get front panel headphone operation.

Can anyone provide an explanation of how the Line-in/Microphone Combo Jack on the rear panel of the OptiPlex 990 USFF (actually the same on all 990 models) is configured?
See http://clascsg.uconn.edu/download/specs/O990.pdf  page 9 item #17 for a photo.
Is there a special plug that goes into this jack to split the 2 devices?
Is the jack stereo or mono?
Is it really just one input with a large voltage input range?

Thanks,

Hi,

I have installed Windows Vista onto this laptop which was originally an XP, but I have not got the headphone jack working.

How do I turn it on or do I have to download it from toshiba website?

Answer:Satellite Pro A200-18P - microphone / headphone jack not working with Vista

Hi

First of all you have to check if there is an special BIOS for Vista.
As far as I know some A200 series needs BIOS which was released especially for Vista OS.

I think the notebook needs Realtek sound driver.
Therefore in control panel you should see the Realtek HD audio manager.
Go there and you will see the mic and headphone jack on the right.
Click right there and check if there are some settings which have to be enabled.

I?m experiencing terrible microphone noise when using an external headset with my new Lenovo X1 Carbon.I first wanted to use my iPhone 5S earphones with a mic that has a TRRS 3.5mm plug. Nobody could hear me on Skype, so I thought that I just had faulty earphones. I then tried using high-end BOSE headset with TRRS 3.5mm plug, costs £240, and expected the highest quality but had the same problem. When I tried headphones with a few phones and iPad ? everything works perfectly. I recorded a 5 sec sample sitting in a quiet room, you can download it here http://d.pr/a/gRlE I tried rebooting, changing mic settings - nothing helped. Like the title says, my external microphone doesn't work through the dock's microphone jack, a usb microphone jack, or the laptop's headphone jack. It recognizes the microphone and I can even set it as the default device in the sound settings, but I still can't get it to pick up any sound. Any ideas, thanks.

Take it in for checking. I suspect that the soundcards we're being given with this product are very low quality (based on many issues stemming around low or no audio sound).

Hi all The X230T, which I own, of course has one of these combo jacks that will take in the 4 pole, 3.5mm (TRRS) headset/mic combo devices, such as an iPhone headset with mic. I have one of these adaptors, with a 3 pole (regular) headphone plugged into the Speaker hole, and another 3 pole (regular) microphone plugged into the microphone hole. If I half-unplug the microphone from the microphone hole on the adaptor, then I can hear from the microphone, but the webcam's dual-array microphones are still active, producing a lot of noise of course. If I plug the microphone all the way into the adaptor, then I can only hear from the webcam's microphone! The strange thing is, this adaptor with the same headphone/microphone plugged in, works on other phones and devices that take this combo port, i.e. phone transmits voice that is going into the microphone that has been plugged in. So the phone works, but the laptop doesn't. I have all the updated drivers from Lenovo on the Realtek sound card. What can I do????   I am on Windows 8.1 Pro. Thanks in advance

In both cases it doesn't work - system detects headphones only. External microphone appears only when i connect spliter alone - when i put micriphone or headphones (or both) it disappears. What can i do with my trifle? Is it possible that the spliter is broken? Or mabye it isn't compatible?I have got the lastest audio drivers from lenovo's webside. Regards,Tomasz

Ok, I'd checked the spliter by multimeter and compared with schema (http://pinoutsguide.com/HeadsetsHeadphones/lenovo_audio_pinout.shtml) and considered that pin number 3 and 4 are swapped. So now i must acknowledge if it is a fail in production or i bought wrong splitter. Thank's for your attention

How can I uninstall Dell Audio and only have the legacy Realtek Driver and Software in my XPS 14 (L421x)?
I installed some time age the default audio driver that I got from "Dell Drivers", this installed the "Dell Audio" + "MAXX AUDIO 4". I already uninstalled this thing, run CCleaner, deleted the folders, and downloaded and installed the legacy Realtek R 2.73 driver, but this thing (Dell Audio) is always installing with the driver.
My system audio is ridiculously loud. I need to put my system audio in somewhat 5~15 / 100% to get "normal audio", the only way I get realistic "normal audio range" is using my SteelSeries Wireless Headset with USB, this way the system audio goes to 100% automatically and I control the audio with the scroll located in the headset, even in 100% max audio, I get a "normal 100%", it's loud, but not EXTREME like the notebook audio!
Another problem, when I plugin my Apple Earpods, they simple doesn't work, I already tested them with tons of devices at home, and they are working great. The system doesn't even recognize them.
I think that everything would be resolved if I could install the Leagacy Realtek drivers & software, not this *** loaded with bloatware from Dell, I don't care about "MAXX Audio", "MaxxSense" and all this BS. If you look with attention, all the settings located in this "Dell Audio" menu are the same in the Real... Read more

Hello BleepingComputer

I just upgraded my computer a few days ago, and I am having problems with the Front Jack Audio/Headphone.

Normally, I set my Headphone to run simultaneous with my Speaker with Realtek HD audi/Stereo Nix (Disable Front Jack Detection and vice versa), and I could change the volume on both devices separately.
But since I changed the motherboard, when I have realtek installed, it doesn't have the Headphone setting in Sound/Playback.
The headphone work perfectly, but its linked to the Speaker's volume, which is really annoying.
Also, the Realtek layout changed from the last one I got, and doesn't have the "Disable Front Jack Detection" option.
(Picture: http://i903.photobucket.com/albums/ac232/notyellowasian11/Untitled-1_zps2242cdba.jpg)

So far, I have tired..
Installing an older version of Realtek driver;
Changing the audio setting in the BIOs (HD or AC97)
Changing the audio connector on the MOBO (Hd or AC97)
Tried multiple compinations with Realtek HD audio manager settings.
Cleaned every plugs/jacks related on that.

So far, I couldn't been able to get the Headphone tag at all when Realtek is installed.

Thanks !

Hi Forum,I use my computer a fair amount for music editing and my amplifier has just died on me.The Amp I was using was very cheap and didn't need to do anything special.Unfortunately, I don't seem to be able to find anything similar now.All I need to do is convert an Audio RCA input to a headphone jack output. The signal needs to be amplified as the input signal static so simply connecting straight to the RCA won't work.Anyone got any ideas of the cheapest way to do this? Or anyone know where I can get a cheap amp with a headphone jack output and RCA input? As always, any help appreciated.

I should imagine a trip to your local Maplins would sort you out. They have a wireless RF Headphone set (L 47 AA) which plugs into your source and Bobs your uncle ! Alternatively they have a cheap audio amp on a board which you can easily convert to your requirements with a couple of RCA plugs and sockets. OR, try EBay ???

Question: Combo audio jack

Hello everyone. I post this topic because this has been bugging me for months now and I am a total noob in this type of probs. I bought a Lenovo S110 and it has only one jack and I believed it is an audio combo jack (the one that recognizes mic and headphones). I seem to have trouble using my headphones on this jack. I tried plugging my nokia earphones( with microphone and earphone) and ordinary headphones. Both are recognized by my device but the sound is like broken of some sort. I also tried plugging speakers on the same jack and it works pretty well. I don't think that the problem is my headphones. They are pefectly fine when used on other computers. What could be the problem? How could it be fixed? I appreciate any kind of help from you.

Answer:Combo audio jack

hi pauljohntenco,

 Welcome to Lenovo Community Forums!

Your Issue might be with the Ground/ mic rings, Some of headphones and ports Uses Diff set up like some with Mic buttons as well.

Your external speakers will work on your s110 because external speakers only has a normal 3 connectors and inter-changing the the mic and ground does not affect the connection.

You can try this approach by neokenchi on a somehow similar concern.
"Although audio combo jacks are design for smartphones (for the purpose of handsfree talking), it also supports a wide variety of headsets too. If the nokia headset works on other devices, try to plug the earphone but don't put it all the way in (about 1mm-2mm before it fully contacts the audio jack) and observe"

or if that nokia earphone has a button for answer try holding it down see if the sound changes.

You can try other earphones I bet one will work properly. or you can get this kind of splitter to split the Mic/ground to normal connectors
 Spoiler (Highlight to read)
Hope this helps,
Cheers!

When I plug my headphones into the headphone jack (and yes, it's the right jack), there's no change, the audio continues from the external speakers.

It sounds like the headphone jack wasn't connected back to the motherboard, or perhaps the tech mixed up the mic/headphone jacks.

I've been watching the Playback devices in the sound control panel and I'm rather confused why this is happening. Essentially, if I am listening to music (or anything for that matter), and I plug in headphones, the computer acknowledges that headphones are plugged in, but keeps the sound going to the previous device. Once I stop the music, then restart it, the sound will go to the headphones. If I unplug the headphones, the sound does not go back to the speakers until whatever program outputting sound restarts.Any ideas on this one?Edit: I should specify. It seems to only route the audio to another device once the program itself is restarted.

Immediately whenever a headphone or earbud is plugged in, the audio is crackly, until I go to the realtek audio manager which doesn't have many options. once I change the Left-Right balance to being very one-sided, the cracks and pops don't occur anymore. However all of the balance is off, voices are not audible, and SFX or background music/tracks are output very bad.Testing the left-right balance, both play the same as if the headphones are mono audio.

Hi there, Ray -
Thank you for writing in to the Lenovo Forum - happy to have you here today.

Did you check headphones with with different system?
Check your speaker and headphone connections for loose cables or the wrong jack.
Check your power and volume levels, and try turning all the volume controls up.
Also, try updating the BIOS

I have a windows 10 laptop and up until yesterday everything was fine , and suddenly it seems that my audio jack doesn;t detect my headphone. I connect my headphone to the audio jack, but the sounds just came out my laptop's speaker. I've tried to switch to my earphone and the result is the same. I've tried several solutions like uninstalling my driver or trying to get to the sounds properties , but the results are the same. Please give me your help , and btw I'm new here.

Answer:Audio jack seems not detect my headphone

With what you stated you've tried, it could be an internal connection problem. Many Laptops have a small I/O board that is connected via a cable to the main board. If yours is this type, it may require "reseating" (unplug then plug back in) the connector.

I have this flat screen tv that I bought not too long ago. I would like to connect headphones to this tv to watch regular television but there is one big problem. It does not have a headphone jack nor audio rca(red/white) outputs. This pretty strange since this is a fairy new tv. Is there any way I can connect headphones to this tv? Would I need any adapters like somehow converting one of the audio rca inputs to an output so I can use this cable:

Possible Solution:
Put Windows to Sleep, then wake it up. Headphone jack audio will be restored.

Problem:
Headphone jack randomly stopped outputting audio.
volume control at 100% and appearing to work normally. Laptop internal speakers worked fine.
Windows detects headphones plugged in, but no sound in headphones.
Uninstall sound card and realtek drivers, reboot did not fix problem.

Tested Linux live CD and headphones worked in Linux.
So hardware was definitely not broken. Only Windows was broken.

(I had this issue recently, so I'm leaving this here for search engine results and anyone who has this problem in the future)

Answer:Possible fix when headphone jack has no audio, everything else normal

Holy crap i love you! I reinstalled Windows 7 recently to fix this problem after trying just about everything, but after a couple of Windows updates my headphone jack wasn't working again. Found your post after filtering search results to recent hits and this trick worked! This problem only creeped up a short while ago, so maybe it has to do with recent Windows updates.

I have a relatively new ThinkPad W550s and the audiojack has stopped working.  It no longer works with my headphones or external speakers.  I have checked the devices in the "playback" tab of the Sound box in the Control Panel and the only thing listed is "Speakers".  It does not recognize when i plug in headphones.  What do I do to fix this? Thanks

I am currently using an Asus laptop with windows 8.
The laptop only has 1 usb port and an audio combo jack.

I have bought several headsets with mics with either the combo audio cable or one with the 2 cables and used s connector to plug them in to the audio jack and the mic won't work. The headphones work fine and sound great but no matter what I do it will only pick up the mic that comes installed on the laptop.

This is not a problem if I use the usb port but that is no longer an option since the tracpad has stopped working.

I've tried several solutions I've seen posted on the forms and so far nothing has worked. Is this a lost cause for me?

I'm on the edge about buying the T400s, because I'm not sure about this one feature. Will I be able to plug a normal set of headphones into this port? Is there some kind of adapter to convert a headset that has a separate audio and mic adapter into this single port? Thanks for you help.

Answer:T400s Audio combo jack

normal headphones, yes. adaptor, maybe? i'm guessing it's similar to the one on the iphone (amongst other smartphones with 3.5mm jack), but don't quote me on that

Hi all, New to the forum and hopefully someone can help me out. I'm trying to setup a system that will allow me to record meetings.  The setup has the mics and speakers going into a mixing desk.  I can get the sound to come out of the laptop into the mixing desk and out the speakers fine, but when I try to hook up the mixing desk so that the sound is coming into the laptop using a combo audio adapter the quality is just unusable. What I need is:The ability to play audio from the laptopRecord audio on the laptop through the built-in mic isn't good enough quality. It will also be used for Skype so that people who are at home can join a call and hear the meeting. Anyone got any idea on what's wrong going wrong?  If the audio jack isn't going to do it what are my other options? Thanks Alex

I bought a Lenovo Z710 and am very happy with it so far. I only had 1 minor problem: It has a combo audio jack, 1 jack for headset and microphone. I have several headset/mic sets but none of them are compatible with the combo jack. I ordered a Lenovo Headset P830 headset expecting it to be compatible because it is sold by Lenovo. It is not compatible and I have been unable to find any adapter on the Lenovo web site. I called Lenovo's toll free help line and was told to take my laptop to an electronics store to see if they could find one for me. Really? You make a product with an unusual jack and another product without an adapter to fit it and expect me to go shopping for a generic adapter? I really belive that an adapter should've been included with at least one of the products I ordered or be readily available on the Lenovo web site.

I've read some posts about needing an adaptor to use the combo jack as a line-in. What I'm trying to do is plug my guitar amplifier's headphone out into the Lenovo Yago 2 audio jack, so I can record guitar tracks on my laptop. What kind of adaptor do I need? This is a function I really want to use. Thanks!-Adam

Answer:Using combo audio jack for line-in?

hi swordams,

Welcome to Lenovo Community Forums!

This is a wonderful Idea!
Well, You'll need these adaptor.

First you'll need something to adjust your Guitar jack pin
Plug your Guitar jack here
6.35mm from you guitar jack to 3.55mm pin

Now you'll need to Seperate the Mic and the Sound on your Computer's combojack
You'll need this
a Combo jack splitter.

Hope this helps
Cheers!

Hello all I have purchased a Combo Jack Splitter which is like this one: http://forums.lenovo.com/t5/image/serverpage/image-id/169i7439D0FCBFE8A695/image-size/medium?v=mpbl-... I have made sure it's a 4 segment type of combo jack. I have an external microhpone 3.5mm 3segment that clips onto the headphones which is also a 3.5mm 3 segment jack. The combo jack works fine on other PC's, the Microphone works fine on other PC's. However on my lenovo edge E520, it simply says that the device is not plugged in (microphone) (the headphones work fine with the combo jack just not the microphone) Any ideas of what to do? I have tried reinstalling drivers. Any adivce will be good. Cheers.

Answer:Audio combo jack Not Working

I'd just like to make an update, If you plug the combo jack ion 3/4 the way, it detects the microphone, but the headset and microphone are pretty crappy quality. Any Ideas?

Hey, I have a flex 14 ideaPad and up until recently everything's been running smoothly audio-wise (when headphones were and were not plugged in), except for randomly a couple of days ago when I plugged headphones into the jack and no sound came through either the headphones or the speakers, although the headphones were detected by the laptop. When I unplugged them sound would come through the speakers again. I tried again with a different set of headphones but the problem reoccurred which lead me to believe the problem is with the laptop, after searching for solutions online I decided to delete and then reinstall the audio drive (Realtech HD Audio Manager). This fixed the problem for a couple of days but now the same problem has returned. I am confused as to whether this is a hardware/software based problem as when I reinstalled the driver it did solve the problem so it couldn't really be hardware related. Would anyone know what the problem is? Should I just keep on deleting and reinstalling the driver? Again the headphones are detected by the laptop, they do not appear as their own playback device though (is this always the case?) Thanks, Tiernan

Answer:Flex 14 Headphone Jack/Audio Issue

The Realtek configuration on the Flex has Windows only show a single, common device for all the audio outputs.

Here's the latest Realtek driver. If the issue persists after, I would recommend a warranty call.

Hey guys,So I was working on my HP Pavillion notebook and I accidentally tangled my earphone around my neck and broke them, leaving the headphone 3.5mm tip in the audio jack.        I tried everything to remove it, I soldered the end of the broken piece back onto it and tried to pull it out but couldn't, I tried super glue, and glue gun but everything failed. I even contacted and reached out the service centre in my city but they said they will charge me for the whole board coz they won't fix it and instead they will replace it (even though my laptop was only 2 months old). I have given up on getting rid of the broken piece and want any of you guys to help me changing my driver. I tried to uninstall the audio jack from device manager and enabled the speakers but it still won't work I tried several ways to contact HP support but they are out of reach and won't have a similar issue on its forums and guides. if you guys could help me out, that would be amazing.Thank you!.

I've recently been having a problem with my headphones. The computer recognizes that I've plugged them in but it still uses the external speakers and there's no sound coming through the headphones. I've tried more than one pair of headphones and it still doesn't work. Restarting the computer worked once but not anymore.

Answer:Speaker/headphone/audio jack problem

There is usually a hardware switch in the socket, which is engaged when you put the plug in. Seems like it might be mechanically broken.

Hi guys,

I've signed up here to try and get some help with this issue in particular. After having a quick Google around I've seen that it is a fairly common issue for headphones or earphones to sound tinny on Windows 10 with Realtek HD Audio. However, the only fixes that I could find were driver updates are disabling all sound enhancements. I've tried both of these fixes but yet the problem persists on my end.

Has anyone had this problem before or have any suggestions that may fix the issue? I imagine I'm missing something simple but can't think what it could be for the life of me.

Any help will be much appreciated.

Many thanks,

James

Firstly, I updated to Win 10 about 4 months ago and this problem only showed up yesterday.  Please! read this first (opens in new page and I pasted it just in case) http://h30434.www3.hp.com/t5/Desktop-Audio/HP-Envy-Desktop-headphone-jack-not-working/td-p/4010564 Scroll down to where "RandShouse" writes:"1. Click the Start button.2. Type Beats Audio and select the Beats Audio Control Panel.3. Select Advanced Settings from the top menu.4. Under Jack Information uncheck the box that says Enable auto pop up dialog, when device has been plugged in." What's happening is that my laptop's audio is working with earbud, headphones (anything that works with the headphone jack). But the problem is that terrible Beats software. So if I watch a youtube video with the earbuds then remove them, the laptop audio works perfectly fine! Then Beats kicks in and recognizes that I just unplugged a device when it says "You just unplugged a device." Which makes pefect sense. Because I just removed the earbuds. And for a few seconds, the audio from my laptop (speakers) works perfectly fine. But then Beats audio malfunctions and says that "You just plugged a device...". WHICH IS WRONG. So I tried to follow the steps written by RandShouse but step 4 is not even there. For some reason, I don't have the checkbox and I could go to Control Panel > Sys and Security > Hardware and Sound > Realtek. But I don't have realtek (which has it's better way of dis... Read more

I recently installed a Kinivo Bluetooth adapter (BTD-400) on my HP G71-340US laptop (Windows 7 64-bit OS).  Although the bluetooth adapter works as expected, my headphones don?t get any audio output when plugged into the laptop jack.  I checked the Manage Audio Devices / Sound / Playback panel and the ?Independent Headphones? (IDT High Definition Audio CODEC) are in working order.  In fact, the Headphones can be seen changing status on the Playback panel when I plug in or remove the headphone connection.  So the hardware seems to be working fine just like before. I ran the Microsoft Troubleshooting tool and it did find an issue with the Independent Headphones but was unable to automatically fix it.  The problem was identified as: Audio device isn't set as default.  However, the "Independent Headphones" are listed as the "Default Communications Device" on the Playback tab. I?m not sure what I need to do next to resolve this issue.  Please advise. Thanks.Jeff
