T460 scrolling issues with trackpoint and ultranav...

Question: T460 scrolling issues with trackpoint and ultranav...

I'm using the ultranav middle button to scroll (I live for this feature which is why I've been buying thinkpads since time immemorial) However, on the t460, scolling with the middle button/nubbin is painfully slow in Word 2007, and Adobe Acrobat/Reader is a nightmare. In Word its just slow and you have to use a lot of pressure on the nubbin (there appears to be no setting to change this). In Acrobat, it's agonizingly slow (in both Reader and Pro) and will "stick" on if you try to go to fast and just scrolling for multiple seconds after you release the button. Stragely, the trackpad scrolling works fine in Word, though it is still bad in Acrobat. In addition, the middle button scrolling will frequently slip and stop scrolling, sending the pointer to the bottom of the page. Nubbin/middle button scrolling works (oddly) extremely well in Microsoft Edge... Please help! Middle button scrollig with the nubbin is the best feature on these machines. Using: T460 Windows 10 64-bit with the latest drivers.

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Hello there, I have an issue with UltraNav TrackPoint while trying to scroll using the middle button. It seems Windows 10 are ignoring the middle button completely. Iīve tryied the solution I found here with the registry, but with no luck. I  remember the scrolling worked only for like two days after I purchased this repassed X230 tablet. After all the automatic Windows updates it stopped working. I tried uninstalling the driver and downloading fresh lenovo new one, but nothing... can someone here please help me? This issue is really annoying, otherwise I love the X230 tablet!

Hi, Problem occurs after waking from sleep or standby or hibernate, and alternatively  or right click on ultranav right button (it opens context menu). Then my left click is disabled. The cursor is either frozen or not. For the freeze there seems to be no rule, but the left click is always disabled. I have formatted the windows, installed new drivers and utility programs and also new bios. The same problem occurs every time.I have Windows 7 x64 I have seen many posts for issues with TP trackpoints and trackpads, but no resolution as of yet. If I am wrong, please point me in the right direction.

Answer:T420 Trackpad / UltraNav / Trackpoint problem after sleep or ultranav right click

Does this happen with the TrackPoint keys or the touchpad keys or both? Does it happen with the UltraNav driver uninstalled?

Hello everyone, I searched a bit both these forums and others but haven't found the solution to this problem I'm experiencing. I recently bought a used T430 and I've been using it for the last couple of days, trying to get used to trackpoint and all. I performed a clean windows install and installed a Win 10 education my university provides. I followed the advice on Lenovo webpage about letting Windows update do its thing first and then run the Lenovo System Update utility to update drivers as necessary. Everything's working nicely other than some issues with the trackpoint buttons (the 3 buttons just below the space bar are called the trackpoint buttons I guess?)  Anyway, the issue is that before I did a fresh install, the middle button when pushed entered the scroll mode which then let me scroll using the trackpoint. Now it still enters the scroll mode but also does a right-click when I let go. This leads to an issue where a right-click is performed at every scroll step(if that makes sense) which leads to wonky scrolling. One other issue is that the right button does nothing at all. I expected the middle button to only have scroll functionality and the right button to simply right-click.  Things I've tried so far: - Manually removed the pointer device and ran Lenovo system update again to update the UltraNav drive, and also disabled auto-driver installation of windows update. The driver version installed by System Update is 19.0.17.115.&nb... Read more

I have an X60 Tablet PC. Trackpoint scrolling works fine in programs running directly on the computer. When I log in through Windows RDP and run a program on one of our servers, the trackpoint scrolling feature does not work. I am able to use the scrolling feature on an old Fujitsu tablet PC on server based programs. I have downloaded the latest driver and checked all the settings but to no avail. Any ideas? Thanks,John

I have an IBM T40 laptop. I have been having problems with the mouse properties. I opened up the advanced properties for the mouse and selected the UltraNav tab. I keep selecting the "Standard Scroll" option but it never stays. It keeps doing the smooth scrolling. For some reason, after my laptop has been on for a while, I can get the standard scroll option to stay. But then after a while longer it reverts back by itself. It usually happens when something disrupts my wireless internet connection. I have downloaded all the latest drivers that I could find from the IBM website. What is messing this up?

I wasted a frustrating 40 minutes with Lenovo tech support trying to elicit answers to these simple questions. Trackpoint Historically, Linux support for Trackpoints has been hit or miss. Consider these two FRU IDs: 40K9400 is pre-Lenovo IBM USB keyboard with Ultranav (pad and Trackpoint). It is essentially impossible to change the Trackpoint sensitivity in Linux. It just shows up as a (very stiff) PS2 mouse. 55Y9003 (using it now) is a Lenovo USB keyboard with only Trackpoint. When plugged in, shows a "sensitivity" file on sysfs, where you can write 255 to get a good pliable mouse. On my current keyboard the path is /sys/devices/pci0000:00/0000:00:14.0/usb2/2-2/2-2:1.1/0003:17EF:6009.0056/sensitivity (will change after each USB plugin). Without the sensitivity tweak, Trackpoints are terrible in Linux, as bad as the pathetic lookalikes on HP and Dell and Toshiba laptops. A lot of people buy Thinkpads for Trackpoint and Linux. Lenovo should publish details of Trackpoint chipset and how to reliably control sensitivity from Linux. I tested the first Trackpoint before it was released to market, and contributed code to a Linux trackpoint driver, so I feel strongly about this. Take away the Trackpoint in Linux and there's no good reason for me to choose T460 over MBP15.  Storage options Apparently T460s has a full-length mSATA connector on the motherboard, but no 2.5 inch HDD/SSD bay. I just got a new T61p running Vista business and was configuring the look & feel of it related to the trackpoint.  I completed all of the normal 'first time setup' chores; registration, software & driver updates, user definition and savepoint. I went to the Control Panel,  Hardware & Sound, Mouse, Mouse Properties/UltraNav panel.  Once there, I played around with the TrackPoint by: clicking the TrackPoint Settings buttonselecting the Magnifying Glass optionclicking the Choose Scrolling or Magnifying Glass Function Settings buttonselecting the Large Size Magnifying Glass optionclicking the Ok buttonclicking the Apply button on TrackPoint Propertiesclicking the Ok button on TrackPoint Propertiesselecting the Use advanced features only - the Magnifying Glass feature didn't seem to work when the 'pointing device' option was enabledclicking the Apply button on UltraNav I was then able to use the TrackPoint as a roving Magnifying Glass, which was a 'neat' feature that quickly became unusable.  (Normal typing lead to frequent brushes of the TrackPoint which caused the Magnifying Glass to pop up when & where I didn't want it, etc.) I tried to undo the feature by resetting it to a Scrolling only with 'Use as pointing device with advanced features' setting - clicking Apply/Ok as needed - but to no avail.  The TrackPoint didn't resume it's 'pointing device' functionality. I then reset it to M... For some reason randomly when I turn on my computer after it gets done loading Windows XP (gets to the log in menu) my T60 ThinkPad Laptop's mouse will no longer work.  After I restart it then it seems to work fine.  I can't find any specific drivers for it to download to try and resolve this issue either.  Any ideas? Also, this laptop was used by someone before me and they formatted the harddrive so I lost my ThinkVantage restore stuff so I can't restore the laptop to its factory settings.  Is there a place I can download that or at least set it up by hand? I am hoping if I have that option it will fix the mouse issue as well.  Thanks!

Answer:T60 UltraNav and TrackPoint not working after boot up

Hello, please go to Lenovo support page. And download MS NET 2.0 and System Updater. First I would suggest to update only your ultranav driver, for trackpoint and touchpad. But donīt update all at once and be aware, also bios updates, which may be not necessary are offered there. If you are in warranty till now, try to call Lenovo hotline and they might send you the R&R discs for free.Otherwise you have to pay.  Message Edited by Agotthelf on 02-12-2008 08:16 AM

Hi, I just purchased a SL500 from Lenovo. The UltraNav (TrackPoint and TouchPad) is not working. I have installed the drivers via the Lenovo website but still not working. I have always done all the windows updates, and Thinkvantage system updates, but still no joy.  I also installed the UtraNav Utility (which does not even show up under Thinkvantge after installation). Fn+F8 brings up the Mouse properties box, but there is no tab for the UltraNav device etc. I want to try a possible resolution via this forum before contacting Lenovo support. Thanks for your assistance! ***lenovo SL500, Vista Business 32***

Answer:SL500 - UltraNav (TrackPoint and TouchPad) not working

Installing drivers from lenovo website was kind of tricky for me, initially. All I used to do was to run the setup.exe file; until someone told me that the drivers gets extracted in another folder in C:\. The installation instructions are given on lenovo website, make certain you are not making the same mistake like me:- http://www-307.ibm.com/pc/support/site.wss/MIGR-70341.html Else, I fancy the keyboard might have gone bad, contact lenovo in that case. Hope it helps.

Got a strange one on my X201T.  For some reason I can't fathom, my laptop's Trackpoint, Touchpad and all their associated buttons do not work when I log into my laptop - they did before but in the last few days, they've stopped.  My external USB still works fine when connected. However, if, for example, I do 'ctrl-alt-del' and lock the laptop, they start working again until the moment I'm logged back in.  Also, If I log in on a Guest account, they all work fine!  This suggests it's not the hardware, I think. I've looked at the Control Panel / Mouse dialogue and the options under the UltraNav tab are all greyed out - but they are not on the Guest account.  Somehow, my user account on the laptop is not allowing me to use the Trackpoint, etc. My external USB mouse works fine in all accounts, btw. I'm running Windows 7 64-bit.  I've updated drivers through Lenovo update (though none seemed related to this problem). Any thoughts how I can fix this?

Hi there, I have a weird problem. First, I am running Windows 7 beta (build 7100) on my T60 (type 2007), so that could be the reason, and I assume it's probably software related in any case. But anyway, in case some of you have experience with the problem, here goes. The other day the mouse buttons on my UltraNav, for no apparant reason, stopped functioning. The trackpoint is working fine as is the middle scroll-button and the touchpad. But I can't left or right-click. Both the buttons above and below the touchpad are gone. Pretty weird, as the upper mouse buttons are connected through the keyboard-connector-cable and the touchpad and the buttons below that are connected via a seperate cable. I've checked the settings in the UltraNav tab and they're ok, and I'm using the latest driver (9137), and have tried reinstalling it.No luck. Any ideas - besides reinstalling/downgrading Windows, which I'll probably do anyway if nothing else helps?

Trackpoint + dragging is still not working with the Ultranav middle button as of 16.2.19.2 driver. It's an extremely important function for any 3D graphics program. With the Lenovo driver it's not possible to use the middle button + trackpoint to navigate in these programs! Lenovo, please fix this bug. It's working perfectly if I install the latest Synaptics driver. It's only happening with Lenovo's driver. Using Synaptics driver is not an option, because it has no guard against keyboard typing + touchpad accidental clicking. Test:Testing is very easy.1. Set your middle button behaviour to "None".2. Above an empty area of your desktop, click the middle button + try to move the mouse pointer with your trackpoint. The pointer isn't moving! It's the same thing what happens in any 3D graphics program! You cannot navigate your camera, unless you use an external mouse! Fix:Please fix it. Just don't stop the trackpoint pointer when someone clicks the middle button in "None" settings. System: Using a W520 for the reference.

Answer:Trackpoint + middle button dragging still not working in Ultranav 16.2.19.2 driver

I am not a professional CAD user, but I too want to be able to use the middle button as if it were a normal mouse. There is a lot of software that utilize the middle mouse button and can't handle the silly scroll feature. Did you find a work around? You mentioned something about Synaptics.

After some recent UltraNav driver updates I have lost cursor and use of the trackpad and trackpoint. The yellow triangle shows up in device manager as the drivers cannot identify the hardware. I've tried uninstall/reinstall and rolling back to older drivers to no avail. This happened originally after an update on 1/26. I had to uninstall drivers, cleaned registrty keys, ran windows update, ran TVSU to reinstall drivers and that worked for a week. Then another update pushed on 2/9 knocked out the Trackpad again.  The device in enabled in both the control panel and BIOS. Disable/Reboot/Enable did not work. Rollback of drivers to 2 or 3 previous versions did not work. Thankfully I have the touch screen or my 15 month old T440 would be entirely useless. Anyone have similar issues and/or solution??

I grabbed the 5/2011 drivers for UltraNav from the Lenovo site and it appears that an option 'to disable the integrated pointing devices when an external pointing device is present' does not exist, or at the very least I can't easily find it.  Please please please please tell me I'm simply being dense and this behavior is very easy to enable. Seriously, the 5-year old Dell drivers I had with my old machine did that, and this is driving me BONKERS. Alternatively, if what I'm doing here is feature-requesting, I'd be like 50% there if I could Fn+F8 and have an option to kill both the touchpad and the trackpoint - alas, I can disable 1 or the other BUT NOT BOTH WITH THAT OPTION.  Can I really not disable both? Lenovo W520, Windows 7 Professional 64-bit.

Answer:Option to disable UltraNav (touchpad + trackpoint) when external mouse is connected

I've never seen such a feature with the UltraNav drivers. You could just max out the PalmCheck and then set it to touchpad only.

Hi all, I have a problem with my Thinkpad Edge S430. After reinstalling Windows 7, System update and all drivers, my trackpoint doesn't work. Itīs disabled and there is no way of getting it to work. I have unistalled, cleaned the registry and reinstalled the driver from the official driver web page, from within system update,... no way.  The other problem is with the SD Reader. I use a 32Gb SD card for backup purposes and a week ago simply itīs like the reader does not exist anymore. The devide administrator does have all drivers installed, but the reader is not working (of course, I have checked that the card is working and with all data in other PC). I have also unistalled and installed the driver, but again no way. Any help is really welcome. Thanks in advance,

Answer:Ultranav trackpoint not working, SD reader vanished. Thinkpad EDGE S430

Hi, petodow

For the TrackPoint issue, I would try installing the Synaptics driver from here. Synaptics is the company that makes UltraNav, so there shouldn't be any loss of functionality.

As for the SD card reader, there is a BIOS update that was released five days ago that may help. The update can be found here.

Hope it helps,
Adam

Hi,While docked yesterday, I downloaded the latest ThinkVantage Updates  using the System Update Utility for my T61 2009-AD1.  After applying the updates, the system rebooted and my TP stick was very SLOW as I keep it on the fastest settings to reduce hand stress.   When I went into the control panel --> mouse, it tells me: "Unable to connect to the Synaptics Pointing Device Driver"   If you have installed another PS/2 Pointing Device Driver, please uninstall the Synaptics driver by clicking on the Yes button.  You then need to reinstall your pointing device driver for the external device again.  Do you want to uninstall the Synaptics Driver Now? I had an external USB TrackPoint Keyboard connected to the dock and have never had any problems from the UltraNav or the Updates.   Generally, there were two UltraNav tabs in the Mouse Panel, one for the onboard TP and one for the Ultranav USB Keyboard.. Although I already reported this as a bug in Chrome , I am pretty confident now that this is a bug in the ElanTech UltraNav driver. Whenever I press Ctrl (and release it) and scroll on a website in Chrome with either the TrackPoint or the Touchpad, Chrome zooms in and out of the page as if Ctrl was still being pressed. This does not happen with a mouse or any other Laptops. To stop this 'zoom mode', I have to switch to another window with Alt-Tab or press Shift once. I already disabled all options in the UltraNav preferences (e.g., zoom function), but the behavior didn't change. The latest system update installed UltraNav driver 16.1.1.0 of 4/6/2012.  This apparently implements smooth scrolling which is very nice to use BUT it significantly reduces my battery life.  I'd like to optimise battery life and return to my previous scrolling functionality.  I'd appreciate advice on how to determine which version of the driver I was running before this update, and how can I restore that version of the driver.  (I tried using the roll-back function in Windows Device Manager but that installed version 7.5.27.24 of 7/6/2007 which disbaled scrolling altogether.) T617658CTO Windows XP SP3

Answer:Restoring previous UltraNav driver to disable smooth scrolling

I stumbled onto the Fn-F8 facility for managing UltraNav and realise that I was confusing the smooth-scrolling function introduced in recent versions of FireFox with the EdgeMotion function in UltraNav which was presumable introduced on my system when I upgraded UltraNav from 7.5.17.24 to 16.1.1.0.  I have disabled smooth-scrolling in FireFox but enabled EdgeMotion in UltraNav which seems like a nice compromise between convenience and power consumption. I still have minor quibbles with UltraNav, specifically, when I try to scroll within drop-down boxes in my usual Web applications (like Redmine, for example) the drop-down pane immediately disappears.  I have to drag the pane control on the right (sorry, don't know the correct name for this) to find the option to select.  Before the upgrade I could scroll within dropdowns on the trackpad.  I also have a little block with up and down marks appearing to the left of the pointer arrow when I scroll which wasn't there before.  I'd appreciate any advice about addressing these issues.

As the title suggests, the newest UltraNav driver has reversed the direction for two finger scrolling, and has not given an (obvious) option to change this default behaviour. Is there anything I can do to correct this?Computer details in sig...

Since somehow the compatibility has been fixed with UltraNav drivers and TwoFingerScroll (Windows 8), I have reverted back to using it, as it is the better of the two options.

Answer:trackpoint scrolling on T21 not working

If you need to reinstall the Trackpoint driver for your unit, here is the link below: http://www-307.ibm.com/pc/support/site.wss/document.do?lndocid=MIGR-4KMUYL Download and save this file to the desktop and the open the folder and run the setup.exe file You might also need the Trackpoint Accessibility Driver, which can be found here: http://www-307.ibm.com/pc/support/site.wss/document.do?lndocid=MIGR-4Z9QVD See if installing these two drivers will help you. If the drivers are installed correctly and you are still having problems with the trackpoint scrolling, it could possibly be a mechancial issue and the part would need replacement. Let me know if this helps you any. Mark

I have a t430 2342CTO with the latest ultranav drivers installed. I have seen screenshots of older versions of the driver where you can select smooth scrolling for the trackpoint. I was wondering if there is any way to enable this behavior in the current driver. Also, is there any way I can change the amount of lines scrolled by the trackpoint? Changing the windows setting only seems to affect the touchpad, not the trackpoint. Perhaps there is a registry setting or something?

Answer:Trackpoint smooth scrolling

Hi ben_jminw,

You should be able to change those settings under control panel > mousepad > unltranav.
How to use the TrackPoint center button - ThinkPad

Windows 8/7/XP/Vista 64/32-bit Edition v16.2.21
If you're using this driver then try using a previous version.

Hi!First: this is no problem-request but a solution for everybody with the same problem. I had the problem, that TrackPoint scrolling did not work in some programs. There are some posts available about correcting this issue, but there seems to be a change in the driver, so there needs to be done some changes. I mainly will refer to this post from Elad Karako, because it has a list of programs, where scrolling does not work. This post, the same as others, recommends to edit the file TP4table.dat in the C:\Program Files\Synaptics\SynTP directory. I just updated my T540p with a 3-button touchpad and had the problem, that in some applications the TrackPoint scrolling does not work (Notepad++, Total Commander, ...)Unfortunately the rules did not work. But in newer drivers there is a further option available. The flags has been updated with the option16 Rule indicate the apply this to IBM Stick Scrolling when ScrollMethood is Synaptics. This means, that if the rule should apply to the scrolling done with TrackPoint, the flag needs to be increased by 16. I also had the problem, that the listed option WheelStd did not work in my case. After playing around I found out that Standard worked. So I updated the rules to the following and added them to the upper part of the file TP4table.dat: ; Process Explorer
*,*,*,*,*,PROCEXPL,Standard,0,25
; Notepad++ and Notepad2
*,*,*,*,*,Scintilla,Standard,0,25
*,*,*,*,*,Notepad2U,Standard,0,25
*,*,*,*,*,Notepad++,Standard,... Read more

Answer:TrackPoint scrolling not working

Excellent detective work both here and with one line scrolling; the TP4table.dat compatibility listing doesn't seem to have been updated for a long time.

I have a T61 that is having a problem with the trackpoint scrolling feature occasionally.  What happens is when I push the middle button, and try to scroll, the window scrolls like its supposed to, but the pointer also moves.  Then when the pointer reaches the edge of the area I'm scrolling, the scrolling stops, and I have to move the pointer back in before I can scroll again.  I have the scrollign settings configured for standard (ie, not smooth or auto-detect).  I have also set the touchpad to be for scrolling and tap zones only (I don't know whether this has anything to do with the problem).  The latest driver (7.5.17.27) is installed.  Any ideas about what else I can try? Thanks,Justin

Answer:Trackpoint scrolling problem

I remember seeing this option in the mouse settings, advanced, where it had check box to use one or the other or both in re to touchpad or the red tip mouse.. I had no issue with it, I tried to recreate your issue but am not willing to screw this one up, sorry. Try that area and also see if the mouse driver is selecting the correct one, and if there is a post bios setting for the mouse functions. Now days with usb mouse, PS2, trackpoint, touchpad, infrared, wireless, we need things simple like a carnival ring toss on to coke bottles.

I am using MS Office 2007 on my Lenovo X60 with 2GB RAM and Win XP Proffesional.  I cannot scroll pages in MS Word 2007 using the standard scrolling type setting in the mouse properties dialog box in the control panel.  When I change the scrolling type setting to auto-select I am able to scroll but the scrolling is so fast that I cannot control it. Moreover, the scrolling does not work at all in either standard or auto-select mode in some of the MS Office dialog boxes.  I have upgraded to the latest trackpoint driver, but that does not seem to improve the situation.  Does anyone have a solution to this problem?

Answer:Trackpoint scrolling speed on X60

I think that when you set the scrolling type in mouse properties to auto, you simply use the standard mouse-wheel click auto-scrolling feature of Office. Check if you can find any Office setting that allows you to adjust the auto-scrolling speed.

Hello, everyone! I'm having an issue with zooming inside autocad using the center mouse button on the laptop and the trackpoint. Whenever I try to zoom using the trackpoint, my drawing disappears and the entire autocad window seems to move up or down. Using the mousewheel on a USB mouse works just fine. Research about this issue reveals that it has been common for thinkpads since at least the T60, but all such questions go unanswered. Please tell me if there is a way to use the trackpoint to zoom and pan. I'd really like to enjoy the benefit of not having to take my hands off the keyboard to use the mouse.

Hi, I am attempting to fix a problem with scrolling in Windows 10 (also applicable to Win 8/8.1). Everything works as it should within non-Windows programs, but "apps" and Windows OS screens do not allow scrolling. I am using the most recent (Windows 7) Lenovo driver. I have tried installing the Ultranav version (updated for Windows 8) but it will not allow it. Any ideas on how to get a working driver installed on this machine? Everything else seems to be working flawlessly.

When scrolling with the trackpoint, I find that the pages don't roll as smooth as the older Thinkpads did. My T410 scrolls much more smoothly than my X250, and I'm thinking that it is a driver issue. I have the latest Synaptics driver, which would be 18.1.27.14. I've tried rolling back the drivers, and it still doesn't improve the scrolling issue. Did anyone else experience this problem? Has anyone fixed it? Also, as an aside, I've found that I could not play FPS games with trackpoint. The left and right buttons don't click immediately after typing. I always get killed right after sprinting because I'm standing there, unable to shoot. Other than that, the trackpoint is suprisingly easy to use for games.

I have an x61s running Windows Vista business (32 bit). Problem is the trackpoint scrolling feature not working in Apple web browser Safari. Somewhere on the web I found instructions for fixing this by editing file tp4table.dat located in c:/windows/system32 However, I cannot find any such dat file in that location. I did find a file with that name in the following location: C:\Windows\System32\DriverStore\FileRepository\tp4track.inf_45c84db5\tp4table.dat To this file I added the following lines: ;iTunes/Safari Scroll Fix*,*,itunes.exe,*,*,*,WheelStd,0,9*,*,Safari.exe,*,*,*,WheelStd,0,9 However, this did not help, trackpoint scrolling still doesn't work in Safari. Does anyone have an idea how I can get this working? Thanks

Hi all, I pretty much always use my Trackpoint to scroll (with the middle button). But several sites I visit see horizontal scrolls as triggers to change page. So, I'll be reading a page, scrolling down via the Trackpoint -- and at some point I'll have deviated enough from vertical to trigger the horizontal behavior -- and I'll then be shuttled off to a page I don't mean to be on. Is there any way to configure the Trackpoint scroll to ONLY scroll vertically? If not, is there perhaps a way to get Google Chrome to stop listening to the horizontal scroll? Thanks, it's actually quite a PITA for some sites I visit.

Hello, Is there a way to have both - scrolling with trackpoint while holding the middle mouse button - and - being able do a middle click with the middle mouse button? I can accomplish this easily under Linux like it is described here. But under Windows it seems to be impossible. I can only have either middle clicking or trackpoint scrolling. I need both.  If anyone knows a solution to this please let me know. Walter (I have a X200s and Windows 7 x64 installed)

Hi guys, I'm Alex, newly subscribed user to your Thinkpad forum, and here to ask for your help (if possible) ! Here is what I'm facing right now on my old (but still working like a charm) W510 :Quite happy to move away from Windows 8, I recently accepted to make the upgrade to the newest Microsoft OS : windows 10 64bits. It didn't take long to get used to it and I haven't had any issues with the programs I am using daily. But... I am having troubles with my trackpoint scrolling method. On both Chrome and Edge browsers installed on my computer, scrolling is buggy/laggy/not smooth at all. Web pages seem to "stick" a bit to much which makes jumps every time you try to scroll with the trackpoint. On the touchpad it is better but not so good either. It is really not a big issue but it can drive you a bit crazy after some time... Surprinsingly, scrolling is great on the OS. The issue is only happening on some programs. After looking around on the web, I am pretty sure that the issue is coming from the UltraNav driver. Since everything was working great on 8.1, I decided to reinstall the old driver (UltraNav 16.2.19.14). And as expected, it worked ! Scroll was back to what it was before, but not working on Microsoft Edge. I am using Chrome so I didn't pay much attention to that anyway. But since Windows 10 doesn't let you choose the updates that are installed , the issue came back when Windows Updates automatically installed the supposedly "newest a... Hi, I'm on a X61t and my trackpoint+middle-button scrolling doesn't work in a few applications like iTunes, GIMP, and MatLab.  I downloaded the latest drivers and they fixed Office 07, but I didn't notice any other changes. It appears that older drivers had an easy way to go in and change settings for individual applications, per http://www.lvlolvlo.net/2007/02/11/office-2007-on-a-thinkpad-ultranav-support-for-scrolling-fix/.  I don't have the folders and files they refer to. How can I fix this? Thanks,Neal

I just want to report that the newest touchpad driver brakes native windows middle-click scrolling. What I'm talking is this:1. Swich off all advanced features in the TouchPoint setting to get back a middle button. BTW, how on earth it is possible that the default setting "steals" the middle button. Going for the Nr. 1. PC maker and forgetting a stupid default settings in a Synaptics driver is a joke.  2. Now, try scrolling in any native windows application like Chrome, Firefox, etc. The quick way of scrolling is to push the middle button while scrolling. It had always worked before. Now this way is broken. Now, the only way for scrolling is to the:1. push middle button to enter scolling mode2. move mouse3. push again to exit scrolling mode This scolling mode has never been a good way to scroll, but the quick way is broken with the latest driver. I'm using a W520 with Windows 7, 64-bit. Broken driver: Version 16.2.5.0

Answer:Newest UltraNav driver brakes native windows middle-click scrolling

I have a similar problem as the OP: after today's update, my Touchpad is not functioning properly anymore. Scrolling of any sort on the Touchpad seems to have been disabled. As I do not have a mouse attached, I am forced to use the Trackpoint set's middle button and then move my cursor around to scroll. I checked my Control Panel settings and both two-finger and single-finger Touchpad scrolling are enabled via the settings. Also I don't know if this is relevant, but it seems like the option to double-tap to bring up Lenovo SimpleTap has also randomly been disabled... W530, Windows 7 x64.

I installed Windows 7 64 bit on my Lenovo ThinkPad R61 model 8918, which has Alps TrackPad and TrackPoint. However it is well known problem that when the computer is awaken from suspend or hibernation it loose ability to scroll (in my case TrackPoint stop scrolling with middle button pressed). I tested over 7 different ALPS driver versions found on the Internet, but any of the does not have scrolling type 1 for TrackPoint (standard smooth scrolling with scrollbar cursor). On couple forums people wrote that ALPS drivers from late 2010 have the problems with loosing scrolling fixed. However Lenovo Support did not release any new version of the driver for Windows 7 for model 8918 (with Alps stuff). Is it possible that someone at Lenovo would take mercy on us, users of 8918 with Windows 7, and release newest drivers from ALPS with all the stuff related to ThinkPads trackpoints???

My question concerns middle-button-scrolling for the Trackpoint on the Yoga 260, which seems to use an Elantech device and driver. Most of the time when I try to use the middle button to scroll, it starts off trying to scroll horizontally, which I then have to overcome to scroll vertically. It takes a lot of time and makes it easy to overshoot. I've been playing around with registry settings and the INI file, but haven't been able to figure it out. For some reason, touchpad edge scrolling, two-finger scrolling, and trackpoint+middle-button scrolling all fail to run in Microsoft Word 2013 (Office 365 University). They also fail to run in the Metro Mail App; and they mess with the zoom in Google Chrome. However, all three kinds of scrolling work fine in all other programs I've used, including other Office 365 programs (Excel 2013 and OneNote 2013). I have the latest version of the driver installed (11.4.30.1). I tried uninstalling it and reinstalling it several times, to no avail. I was strongly tempted to leave it uninstalled and use standard Windows middle-click for my scroll function instead, but that doesn't work in Windows Explorer (where the only scrollable area is also clickable).  Thoughts or suggestions?

Hi all, I really like using the Trackpoint to scroll. But an increaing number of Web sites react to horizontal scrolling by jumping to other pages. So, for example, if I'm reading down a page -- and if I need to use the Trackpoint to scroll down as I'm reading -- if I'm not perfectly vertical when I pull down on the Trackpoint, the Web site detects it as a horizontal scoll, and I get whisked off to another page. I can't be the only person having this problem? Is there some way to disable the Trackpoint from scrolling horizontally without disabling it from scrolling vertically?

Whenever I scroll using my SmartPad: either with the "Edge Scroll" or the "Two-Finger Scroll" or when I scroll using the TrackPoint+its middle button, my web browser zooms in/out. Just as if Ctrl was being pressed. I enabled the "tap zones" feature in the Synaptics touchpad settings and configured the zones to right click and middle click. I notice that sometimes the zones stop working while tapping and navigating are still ok. It turns out that scrolling with the middle button and the trackpoint somehow prevents the tap zones from working.A quick fix is to move the cursor using the trackpoint, move it again using the trackpad, then the zones will function normally. However the fix isn't permanent.I hope that Lenovo / Synaptics will address this small issue in the next touchpad driver update.

Issue 1: When I vertical scroll in a web page (Chrome & MSIE) by dragging TrackPoint (stick) while holding down left UltraNav button, the cursor moves but the web page fails to scroll, or demonstrates scroll latency of about .5 to 1 second behind the stick movement.  Sometimes, I have to try a couple times to get the scrolling to occur. Issue 2: Very often I must double click on UI buttons and web page links with the UltraNav button, when I should, traditionally, only have to click once. Received the T510 about 7 days ago.  i5, Win7 64bit, integrated graphics.  I've disabled all eye candy and set theme to classic.  Updated to latest available UltraNav and display driver.  I've tried just about every adjustment in the mouse and UltraNav settings, going as far as disabling the touchpad and touchpad filters. Synaptics driver info:Driver provider: SynapticsDriver date: 3/24/2011Driver version: 15.2.19.0Download from: http://www-307.ibm.com/pc/support/site.wss/document.do?lndocid=MIGR-66898File: 6hgx37ww  This is truly annoying and I'm about to return this laptop.  I hate to resort to that.  Any help is greatly appreciated.  I've used a T43 and T61 for the last 7 years at work and never had this issue.  I love T-model Thinkpads, but this is a poor experience.

Last night (4/6/2017) an automatic Windows update just now decided to install the most recent Synaptics driver (titled Synaptics - Mouse - 1/11/2017 12:00:00 AM - 19.3.4.66), which apparently is nearly 3 months old at this point.  One thing this update seems to have fixed is an issue I?ve been having with my ThinkPads for upwards of 7 years ? randomly it resets my mouse wheel 'number of lines scrolled per notch' option back to 1 (I prefer 3) pretty much daily, which is a HUGE annoyance, so I?m very grateful for this update and I?d like to keep it. However, it also completely disabled middle click scrolling with my TrackPoint (yes, I have ?Use for scrolling? checked under the TrackPoint settings).  The middle button does nothing now, unless I check ?Use as middle click?.  Rolling back the Synaptics driver to the previous one fixes this issue. Confoundingly, the TrackPoint scrolling with my ThinkPad Bluetooth keyboard still works fine. Has anyone else experienced this problem?  Any ideas how to re-enable TrackPoint scrolling on this newest driver? System details:ThinkPad P50 ? At certain relatively slow speeds the scrolling jumps huge leaps regularly (probably after evey page or so). It's very bad with Chrome and Windows explorer, not so bad but noticeable in Thunderbird. I have set the scrolling to 1 line. My Synaptics drivers are the newest 10/04/2015. Also the treshold to start scrolling with middle button and trackpoint is very high - can't be that hard to make it smooth, so you could scroll very slowly? Please fix this soon... it's impossible to live with.

I recently oredred a T460, and was immediately disapointed to see I had virical lines / grid going through my LCD when I first powered it on.   Over time the lines fade away.  Is this normal behavior is this a known defect in the display?   It is a really bad blemish on what is overall a top of the line computer. When I googled the issue I had several results from /r/thinkpad stating people had the same problems.   One example is this thread. In this thread two videos are post one with lines  and another one after some time when the lines fade away. Is this every T460?  Can someone confirm that they do not have the issue?   I recently called support and they consider my laptop DOA and I am going to get a replacment.  My worry is I will get stuck with the exact same issue on a replacment unit.  If that happens I will end up returning my unit completely, which is a heart breaker because the T460 is exactly what I want in a laptop computer.

Powering up T460 for the first time, my machine would get to the Lenovo screen/bios splash schreen, and produce a beeping sound and restart. This repeated for four or five times, after which it successfully booted into Windows. I couldn't reproduce this anymore. Does anyone have similar experience or should I be worried?

Hello, I have a T460 laptop with the FHD IPS (1920 x 1080) display that has windows 10 preinstalled. If I change the resolution lower then 1920x1080 the screen gets completely blurry. I'm also encountering scaling issues, As default it was set on 150%, The problem is that certain applications are blurry . The solution I found so far to fix that is to check the checkbox 'Disable display scaling on high DPI settings' but that makes fonts, ... just way too small making the application very unpleasant to work with Changing the scaling to 100% fixes everything, but that makes everything too small I wonder if anyone else using tesame display is encountering these issues and what your solution is to this?

Answer:T460 Blurry display and scaling issues

I've got the same dpi (14" FHD screen). And I am developer by trade. The problem is the way Windows programs had been written. Programmers for years didn't have to worry about different dpi, most displays were about 96. So many of them used pixels and not logical units, so many Windows programs to this day have screen organized around fixed number of pixels. There's no quick fix other than look for programs developed with different dpi-s in mind. I.e. I used in the past Crimson Editor which was really nice but it didn't support higher dpi so found Notepad++. Unfortunately there are more complex programs with steep learning curve wich are not easy to switch (video editors, bloody Lightworks which was such a pain to learn, is still in 96 dpi world).

Question: Ultranav issues

Hello, I have factory default windows sxp 32 bit installed on a lenovo R400. sudenly, when i type, it somehow and just sometimes but quite often "clicks" (~ reloacate the pointer) and then suddenly - i find myself typing 50 chars back, in the middle of some word. quite random stuff, but I hate it. I googled that ultranav is the problem, or simply touchpad. for obvous reaons i will not disable bios touchpad. so i downloaded this http://www-307.ibm.com/pc/support/site.wss/document.do?sitestyle=lenovo&lndocid=MIGR-66898 but it is useless as 'dpinst.exe ' is not a valid win32 application... So now what? i do not want to risk to uninstall the current touchapd driver, tho it is owkring, but messing up the typed text, due to obvious reason - there is a high risk it wont let me reinstall the ultranav, therefore i will be without any touchapd, and will not reinstall the windows, rhater throw the expensive lenovo out of window. regards

Answer:Ultranav issues

try the hide pointer while typing setting in mouse properties see if that helps & you can change the ultranav sensitivity

On my L420, i had it set so i can move the mouse with my thumb and scroll with my index finger with the center trackpoint button.

However, the Ultranav options are different for the W541, so, (as far as i can tell) i can't find the option to replicate this.

See screenshots of my configuration.

Basically, i want my center trackpoint button to be always in "scroll" mode, without the need to press the middle button and scroll like on the L420.

Neither the trackpoint nor the touchpad are sending mousewheel events through the remote desktop.  I knew that there was a problem since a couple of vb 6.0 application add-ins were not scrolling properly, but not being able to scroll over a VPN is a more severe problem.  I am running XP Pro on the X300 - is anyone else tunneling with an X300?  Is the lack of touchpad and trackpoint scrolling a problem with Vista as well as with XP Pro?  BTW - the remote desktop applications and windows scroll just fine using the mousewheel on a USB mouse attached to the X300.  Also, vb 6.0 and vb 6.0 compiled add-ins scroll just fine when using the USB mouse. Any help would be appreciated - this is a nasty problem. Thanks,Faz

I have two users with X230 Tablets and recently the Ultranav would stop working - seemingly randomly and occasionally. I upgraded both users to the most recent version of the BIOS and UltraNav driver - version 16.2.19.13 - and the issue has actually become worse. I've disabled/enabled, uninstalled, reinstalled and the issues keep coming back. I can get the UltraNav working - but after undocking (following the proper undocking procedure), closing the lid, the tablet going to sleep and hibernating - the UltraNav TrackPoint and TouchPad both become disabled. Interestingly, before the user logs in - both the TrackPoint and TouchPad will both work, then disable again as soon as the user logs in and the options for UltraNav are completely greyed out until I uninstall and re-install the driver. I'm at a loss.

Having the exact same issue with an x230 tablet.  Currently the only thing that works is reinstalling drivers, but the issue keeps resurfacing.

I just got a new out of box T410 (2537-DN1) and it's great.  However, I notice that at times, the mouse cursor freezes up for a second.  In particular, this happens when I use the top row of touchpad buttons (the three right below the space bar that are typically associated with the trackpoint).  For example, if I click on the left button (above the touch pad), the mouse freezes for a second.  Furthermore, if I click and hold on that button, I cannot drag anything with the touchpad but dragging with the trackpoint still works. This is annoying as I often use two hands (they are small) when I am doing detailed work.  The right hand uses the touch pad and the left handles the buttons (the three above, not the two below).  It's very efficient. Currently, I'm running it with driver 15.2.14.0, 2-17-2011.  I never had problems with using both the touchpad and trackpoint on my previous T60, and I swear this problem only started today.  Maybe I need to rollback on the driver? --kate

Answer:Ultranav issues on T410?

Turn down the PalmCheck sensitivity in the UltraNav touchpad settings. The drivers like to temporarily suspend touchpad input when there is keyboard activity or TrackPoint activity. It used to be a significant delay of 1-2 seconds but has been changed to a non-noticeable amount with the latest driver revision.

Hey all, 2 issues i was having with the latest Ultranav driver on L420 - 16.1.1.0 1. 1 sec pause cannot disable without disabling Prioritize for TrackPoint and keyboard input. Old driver allowed me to keep the option on while i could type without my mouse jumping around 2. When waking up from standby, trackpoint would revert to mouse mode when it was set to scroll mode. I have to click the middle button upon wakeup everytime to put it back into scroll mode. Annoying.  Previous driver completly resolved the problems for me:15.3.39.1 - http://download.lenovo.com/ibmdl/pub/pc/pccbbs/mobiles/6hgx53ww.exe  in case: 15.3.34.0http://download.lenovo.com/ibmdl/pub/pc/pccbbs/mobiles/6hgx50ww.exe

Hi, Recently I had to reformat my T61p and reinstall everything from scratch. Before the format, UltraNav worked without any problems even when I was using my wireless BT mouse (Microsoft Wireless Notebook Presenter Mouse 8000) together with UltraNav + latest version of the Microsoft IntelliPoint software. I could switch from the wireless mouse to UltraNav seemlessly. After formatting, I've installed all the latest drivers for Windows 7 64-bit from the Lenovo web site, and after that, UltraNav started to work erraticaly. Basically, what happens is that although the mouse pointer moves around when I use either the TouchPad or TrackPoint, the click action doesn't always work (I have to press several times for it to actually click) and most of the times, instead of just clicking, it actually sticks to the selected item and if I move it, it performs a dragging actions, as if I was pressing and dragging the mouse pointer. Sometimes, if I go to the ultranav properties and reselect the click and right click actions in the UltraNav settings, it starts working properly, but after some use, it goes back to the erratic behaviour. The only way I can use the mouse properly is by using my external mouse. I've tried rolling back to the previous version of the ultranav drivers (18), but still have the same behaviour. It works fine for some time, and after some use, it goes back to misbehaving. Has anyone seen this before and is there any fix at al... Read more

Hi! Apart from the fact that the new TrackPoint/TrackPad doesn't work really well, I've got some driver issues. 1) First of all, I can't use the middle button and the TrackPoint to scroll. However, I think I've read many people saying that this works fine. My middle button has no function whatsoever, in Windows 7 and 8.1 and with all drivers since release. 2) Firmware upgrade doesn't work. I initially hoped this new firmware upgrade could make the TrackPoint/TrackPad less buggy, but when I tried installing it, it would start upgrading, then stop, tell me "There are no supported devices found." and leave the TouchPad malfunctioning after reboot. I recently downgraded from Windows 8.1 to 7 and now it won't even start, telling me immediately that it can't find supported devices. 3) The newest Synaptics driver 18.0.7.34 is horrible and unusuable for me. When installing it, I can move the TrackPoint, but clicking the TrackPad won't do a mouse click. Only tapping (not clicking) works and only left-clicking. When only using the TrackPad, I can also press it down and generate a mouse click. However, right-clicking and gestures don't work at all. What on earth is up with that?

Answer:T440s - UltraNav driver issues

I'm not sure exactly what's happening but it seems to me like the firmware update is complaining about the drivers being out of whack, and the drivers are out of whack because the firmware is out of whack.Try this tool:https://driverstoreexplorer.codeplex.com/1) Download a copy of 18.0.7.34 and have it ready to be installed.2) Run RAPR and check all of the Synaptics drivers and force uninstall them.3) Reboot4) Install 18.0.7.345) Try the firmware update

Hi everybody, I've had my T530 for a week or so now and really don't have any complaints. However I have been experiencing one software issue. I run Windows 8 Pro, and use two finger scrolling with the Lenovo UltraNav drivers, and whenever the system is under load, scrolling stops working for the touchpad, and for the UltraNav.. Has anybody else experienced this on other Lenovo systems? Lenovo really needs to fix their touchpad drivers, I've never had this issue on other systems before...

Answer:T530 Lenovo Ultranav driver issues

Hi, Blueraydude

I would recommend trying to download and install the Synaptics driver. Synaptics is the company that makes UltraNav, so you shouldn't see any loss of functionality, and it may work better for you. It can be found here.

Hope it helps,Adam

I own a Thinkpad T61, operating Windows Vista 32-bit. I've owned it for a little under 1.5 years now. Recently, I have been having issues with the trackpoint and touchpad. It will stop working completely. Sometimes I can open the ThinkVantage UltraNav menu, reselect one of the options and it'll turn back on. Other times the UltraNav utility/driver will be missing, so Alt + F8 does nothing. Also sometimes just restarting the computer fixes it temporarily. Pretty much I have yet to discover the trigger for it randomly stopping, nor do I have a guaranteed method of fixing it (each time is different). I've read a couple forums with other users having similar problems, but nothing they submitted helped remedy my problem. Any advice would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

I'm at a loss as to where the options are to tweak the UltraNav pointer and touchpad on my Win7, 64-bit W530. I did a fresh Win7 install on it and have downloaded all the drivers (plus run the System Update utility), and while the UltraNav Driver is properly installed and working, I don't see any place to download the UltraNav UTILITY.  This is my fifth or sixth ThinkPad, and one of my favorite things is the UltraNav pointing stick combined with the touchpad. I like to change the effort required on the pointing stick, and then use the touchpad for slow motion and constrained motion controls. These settings have always been accessible under a tab on the Mouse control panel after installing the UltraNav Utility. I thought maybe the UltraNav Driver included the utility, but I can't find any way to access the old controls I'm so accustomed to having over the pointing devices.  Any ideas what I may be missing? My service ticket with Lenovo has been open for two weeks now with no response, so I thought I'd try my luck here. Thank you!!

Answer:W530 UltraNav Driver installed -- where is the UltraNav Utility?

The driver alone should be providing the UltraNav tab in Mouse properties. Give it an uninstall/reinstall.As far as I can tell, UltraNav Utility is the popup menu for enabling/disabling TrackPoint/touchpad upon Fn+F8 on older models.

I have successfully downloaded and installed the latest UltraNav driver and utility for Windows 7 on a T61 ThinkPad.  However, the UltraNav tab is not visible under Control Panel, Mouse Properties. Under Mouse properties and Device Manager it shows a PS/2 mouse, which I do not have connected.  Could this be causing a problem with the utility? The issue I'm trying to resolve is the cursor jumps around constantly and it's very Frustrating.  I've spent hours reseaching the problem and have determined the solution is to adjust the sensitivity of the TouchPad, if only I could get to the utility.

The problem has been reported by 5+ systems. When it occurs:The problem is intermittent; it often occurs after waking the system up from sleep or from a locked state (Windows lockscreen). As a workaround, the user has to press the ESC key, CTRL+ALT+Delete or restart the system in order to regain functionality. Yes, I get similar issues. Although in my case it is mainly: i) the mouse point does not respond after resuming from sleep - CTRL-ALT-Delete or ESC normal resolves thisii) windows or programs open on resume from sleep as if the mouse button was depressed (could be enter key however). Again CTRL-ALT-DEL or ESC can resolve this I'm pretty sure that this is a driver issue as it has only been the last 6 or so months I've experienced this I'm running Windows 8.1 Pro

Answer:"UltraNav Utility" vs "UltraNav Driver" for T400

Hello, it could be that "the UltraNav utility enables the Fn-F8 shortcut when used in conjunction with the ThinkPad Hot Key Utility". Or it may provide "more fluid and comfortable crusor [sic] movement" (Googelberged from notebookreview forum).Another possibility could be, that it enables more detailed configuration of the touch pad. Greetings Tobias

Hi, everybody!I just received my X1 Carbon two weeks ago and was rather concerned about the fact that the buttons above the UltraNav trackpad stopped working on the second day. All the settings are fine - in fact, I even tried resetting them to default several times and rebooting, and yet that still didn't solve the issue. The buttons won't work. I kind of dropped the issue at that point, but now it's gotten serious, as my right corner trackpad key all of a sudden stopped responding correctly in the middle of... well, nothing actually, basic work. At first it did not respond at all, and at the moment it functions in the same way as the rest of the trackpad -  it only does left-button clicking (opens and selects instead of showing a context menu).I hadn't changed any settings at the time, so that cannot be what caused it. Chainging the settings now to other right-key options, e.g. setting it to open the Start menu doesn't change anything - the right key keeps working as though it were set to left-click. Otherwise, I use W7 (although W8 was preinstalled) and haven't messed with the drivers. My TrackPoint is disabled, but I checked and it doesn't make a difference. [Please tell me this isn't a hardware issue, aw man] Thanks!
