Satellite Pro L550-17U fails to boot up, disk noise only

Question: Satellite Pro L550-17U fails to boot up, disk noise only

I have a 3 year old Toshiba Sattelite Pro L550-17U (Sept 2010). And it has worked perfectly ok since I bought it.

2 weeks ago, I turned it on, on my coffee table, where it lives 90% of the time, and nothing!!

Black screen, no keyboard lights (Caps/Screen/Num lock). Encouraging disk noise, On light was green, and charge light works when plugged in.

Tried external monitor, still nothing.

Continued by:

Reseating ram
Removing Hard Drive
Pressing F8 fairly rapidly after cold starting
Pressing F2 fairly rapidly after cold starting
Removed power and battery, replaced battery,

When it has been switched on (and looking rather black!). None of the keyboard lights respond (Num/Scroll/Caps Lock)

All to no avail.

Suspected blown motherboard.

I'm a little disappointed. I have only had one other laptop fail on me like this, and it was a 10+ year old travelmate!

Any other ideas?

Preferred Solution: Satellite Pro L550-17U fails to boot up, disk noise only

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Answer: Satellite Pro L550-17U fails to boot up, disk noise only

All you have done is right and these are typical steps that one notebook owner can try to check if this will help. Unfortunately there are no much options to test.
On this virtual way it is not possible to offer exact diagnostic but I also think that there is some serous mainboard problem. BIOS maybe? Who knows?

It is not easy to make decision what to do now. You can contact service and ask for help. They can check it and tell you what is wrong there but if the mainboard must be exchanged it can be pretty expensive.
It is really not easy to give you some good advice.

I have a Satellite L550 and I was happy with it so far, as long as I didn't use CD listening.
Now I found out, that some CDs will not be played correctly (scratching noise), but some are fine.

However, when I take the "scratching" ones into a standard CD-player, it works fine there too.

What can I do?

Answer:Satellite L550: some CDs does not play correctly - scratching noise

Scratching noice??? Did you try different software?
Winamp or VLC player are great, small applications.

What sound card do you have? Is it Realtek? If yes, then you should try sound driver update.
Furthermore Realtek sound chip support the Realtek HD audio Manager which can be found in control panel. There you can change the sound properties?

But maybe it a compatibility issue between the disk and CD/DVD drive? this ca be possible too?

This is the first time here. I have a Toshiba laptop Satellite Pro L550-1C0
Part no. PSLW9E-01M00EDU, Serial no. Z9289857K. I have also product key.
I need a recovery disk/download to repair my laptop.
I wonder do you have some that you can send to me. I need it very very bad.

Let me know,

Answer:I need recovery disk for my Satellite Pro L550-1C0

Using recovery disc you cannot repair preinstalled OS version. Using recovery disc you can reinstall whole OS and set your notebook to the factory settings again.

All you can do is to order this disc. Please note it is not for free.

Have just purchased a Toshiba L550-1CC laptop with Windows 7 Home Premium 64 bit already installed.
Other software had been installed on the 64 bit version and then the laptop crashed and would seem to boot up with the OS system but with a blank screen and only the mouse courser showing which could be moved around.

Unfortunately the laptop only came with a 32 bit Windows 7 recovery disk.
This was used to re-load the laptop which then worked fine with all the software loaded back in the hard way.

It is my wife?s new laptop and she would like it running back on Windows 7 64 bit version which was not included in the Toshiba recovery disk.

Has the HDD partition in the laptop still got the original 64 bit software tucked away for access and can you make a 64 bit recovery disk whilst the Toshiba is still running on 32 bit software. Having just only received the new laptop I did not want to spend another ?30 on purchasing a 64 bit recovery disk?

Any help in sorting this out gratefully received as I am getting heckled by the boss.

Answer:Satellite L550-1CC crashed - don't have Win 7 64bit recovery disk

If I understand right according notebook specification it was delivered with preinstalled Win7 64bit (image saved on HDD) and additional Win7 32bit installations DVD.

So if you want to have 64bit again install OS again using HDD recovery option -
After doing this please create own recovery DVD for Win 64bit using preinstalled ?Toshiba recovery disc creator?.

I had a 6.4GB Samsung hard disk that I wanted to backup, as it contained some information I needed.
Model name: SV0644A
I was using USB-PATA interface.
When the disk was making my computer stuck, I switched it off, then turned it back on, just to hear that loud screeching noise of death.
I turned it off, then turned it back on, and the noise was gone...for a second.
Then the disk failed to recognize, then the scratching noise, then disk powered itself off.
I am quite sure that there's something wrong with the head inside the disk, but it is strange.
When the scratching noise can be heard, the disk would be recognized, then it would power off. When it's not, it would just refuse to work.
Since I couldn't find user manual for this hard disk, I need your help.

Answer:Loud scratching noise from disk, then disk fails to read

That does not sound good at all. Have you run windows check disk? If it is your disk it will let you know. Other than that you might have some viruses on there.

I have a Toshiba Satelite L550-1cw that will not start, when i press the power button all the lights on the front edge light up, the fan starts and it looks for a HDD for about 2 seconds and then stops.

I have tried a new HDD but the same happens.
I have been told that the whole thing should be skipped and to buy a new one which is not an option.
I love this laptop and want to get it running again as its the best one that i have ever owned.

Please help

Answer:Satellite L550-1CW does not boot up pressing power button

Can you provide more information about this fault?
Can you see something on the display after pressing the power button?
Can you access the BIOS pressing F2 button immediately after powering up the unit?

Despite all this questions, I think that if nothing is visible on the screen there could be a serious issue with one of the following parts: RAM modules, motherboard, CPU/GPU.

From my experience the RAM memory modules are not very expensive (2nd hand could be good enough) and the replacement isn?t very tricky? in case the faulty memory cause this issue, the notebook could be fixed for a little money.

But in case of motherboard problems, the notebook repair procedure could be very expensive.

When I start my laptop it hangs on bios startup sequence.
I see lines:
"System BIOS shadowed"

and need to wait about 3 minutes before it continues to boot.
Then I see next lines:
"Fixed disk 0: FUJITSU MJA2320BH G2"
"Mouse intialized"
And need to wait again about 1 minute before it continues.
No error messages shown. Tried to update BIOS to 1.9 - problem not gone.

I just purchased the U920T-11C a few days ago.
I like it but there a few issues they are putting me off and make me want to return it.

The first issue is the loud fan noise that comes on. Is there anyway to turn this off?

It happens about 15 mins into using the web and then goes on and off every 5 mins or so. It is really loud and being in quiet room it is noticeable.

Is there anything I can do to stop this? I am only using the web and not running any other programs.

Also I have noticed the touchscreen fails to respond for no particular reason. I don't know if there is a pattern but it is frustrating when it just stops for no reason and then sometimes just works again.

Looking at these forums it seems like it is a common problem with the Toshiba. I have a few days before I can return so if these are not solved I think I might just go form the Samsun ATIV Book 9 Lite instead.

Answer:Satellite U920T-11C fan noise and touchscreen fails sometimes

> It happens about 15 mins into using the web and then goes on and off every 5 mins or so. It is really loud and being in quiet room it is noticeable.

I assume the noise is coming from the fans which need to run faster in case the internal temperature would increase.
What you could do is to change the cooling module performance in single power plan.
You could also decrease the CPU performance. This would lead to smaller heat dissipation and the fans would slow down.

> Also I have noticed the touchscreen fails to respond for no particular reason. I don't know if there is a pattern but it is frustrating when it just stops for no reason and then sometimes just works again

You could try to calibrate the digitizer
Go to control panel (Windows key + X -> control panel) -> ?Tablet PC setting?.

The first tab ?Display? contains options like ?Configure the pen and touch display?.
Here you should be able to start Setup and to identify the touch screen.

The first option should contain ?1 internal LCD?
At the bottom you could find button to calibrate and reset the settings for this internal LCD.

But it could be also an hardware malfunction. I cannot say for sure why this happens but maybe an technician should take a look on the hardware.

Hi All,

I have the above computer (or should I say my wife) & it has been nothing but a right pain since the first day we got it.
I have had it about 2 years & must have had to reformat the HD at least 6-8 times using the Product Recovery Disc as laptop wouldn't boot.
The laptop runs Vista.

Anyway problem I have now is that once again laptop fails to boot but for some reason Product Recovery disc also fails to work.....
What can I do...

I have read on various forums that it might work if I reformat the HD first using some s/w on a bootable CD but how/ what S/W do I use.....?
The laptop has a 160Gb SATA HD installed. How can I check this is all working.
I have no idea if current problem is S/W or hardware related..

Does Toshiba have a utility I can use...?

Many thanks for any help....

Answer:Satellite U300-13U fails to boot and Recovery disc fails to work too

What happened exactly?
Do you get some error messages using recover disk?

Please check if the HDD is OK! You can check this in BIOS.
If the HDD is listed in BIOS then the BIOS found the HDD and the HDD is not dead.

Usually you could boot the notebook using an Live disk? for example Bart PE
It?s a bootable live windows CD/DVD

This can helps to format the HDD and then to use the recovery disk!

I own a Satellite A300-1M1 laptop

It reads some DVDs, on windows media player or VLC, but fails to read CDs and a lot of DVDs

The drive is recognized on Windows Vista. I have updated the drives and rebooted. Then deleted from devide manager and rebooted. The deleted from the registry the UpperFilters and LowerFilters and the rebooted again.

The problem persists is exactly ther same. I can read a DVD (movie DVD) but not a CD (with data). I can read both discs on a different laptop.
When I insert the DVD, the disc spins and in a few seconds it shows up in windows explorer and can be played with Windows Media Player or VLC, for example. When I insert a CD with data, the CD spins, there are noises of skidding, at different speeds. The mouse cursor briefly changes shhowing a disc under it, the orange light blinks, but after some 40 seconds or so only a message shows up "Please insert a readable disc". Needless to say, I have tried several different CDs. Only movie DVDs I manage read on the drive.

The drive is listed on Device Manager as:

The Satellite A300-1M1 spcs are:
Intel CoreDuo P8400 2,26 GHz
I use Windows Vista (as it came installed on this laptop)

What can I do to correct this problem?

Answer:Satellite A300 1M1 - CD/DVD drive skids, makes noise but fails to read CD

I think there is no much to do buddy?
I think it?s a CD/DVD drive issue?
There could be something wrong with the drive laser lens or the disks are not fully compatible?

You could try to burn the disks on another computer and could try to read the copied disks?

Otherwise you will need a new CD/DVD drive

I'll keep this short.

1. Vista full installation ISO disc created

2. Disc boots up fine in an XP computer (so disc is fine)

3. Disc does NOT boot up in the Vista computer (my dilemma)

4. XP disc boots up fine in the Vista computer (so CD-ROM is fine)
What could possibly be wrong here? The only remote thing I can think about is that this is a 32-bit install as opposed to 64-bit. I am not sure which bit is in this computer and I am not even sure that really matters. It is a Toshiba A205-s5801 which came from factory with Windows Vista.

Answer:Arrrrgh!!! Vista ISO boot disk FAILS to boot

<<1. Vista full installation ISO disc created>>

Created from what?

That system seems to have come with a recovery partition and recovery mechanism which is the only option provided by manufacturer for any Windows repair/installation.

Hi, Hope someone can help.

Laptop stopped working - keeps trying to fix problem via windows on start-up but this just hangs for hours so I ordered a recovery disc to start a fresh as I believe the original problems were caused by a virus. I have no important data to keep so am OK with clearing everything and restarting. Today. I have just received my Product Recovery disc that I ordered from Toshiba. I follow the instructions; load disc, power on holding C. Then it just continues as if the Recovery CD wasnt in the drive. The CD drive doesnt spin. Its as if the laptop doesnt recognize the disc.

Any ideas?

Answer:Satellite Pro A300 - Recovery disk fails at start

Well, either i?s something wrong with recovery disk itself or the drive doesn?t detect the disk properly?

What happens if you access the BIOS boot menu (F12 key) and select CD/DVD drive as boot device?
If it doesn?t work try another bootable disk to make sure the drive is working properly.

HiWhen my PC is booting up the hard disk makes a louder than normal whirring noise like it is speeding up and slowing down. Once it loads windows XP the noise disappears and it remains that way (quiet) for the rest of the session, only occuring when I boot the PC up next. I am curious as to what it may be and if I can do anything about it.I have a maxtor 60Gb hard disk, and am running windows XP SP1. The processor is an Athlon XP1800+ on a gigabyte GA-7 motherboard with 512Mb DDR RAM. Also on the PC are 2 CD drives, an additional 6Gb hard disk and a number of USB devices (scanner, card reader, joystick), it is not likely to be power supply related is it? TaChris

Please can anyone help. I tried using my recovery disks to restore my notebook when it kept failing to start properly. The disks did not work so I purchased a set of disc from Toshiba on this website. I still have the same problem.

Is it the hard drive failing or something else?

If I purchase a new hard drive will the recovery disks work if the hard drive is not exactly the same as the one that came out?

Did you think about the HDD?
It could be a HDD malfunction that does not allow you to install the system.

I recommend checking the HDD for some possible issues.

There is a nice tool called Drive Fitness Test. You can use it for HDD check.
Google simply to get the software.

I've got a L30-101 which was becoming slow to power up. Another forum suggested going into ms config to ensure max memory being used for boot up and to uncheck some start items. When I restarted, windows icons were enlarged and slightly blurry, so I undid the changes I made but windows is still not clear. The laptop is working fine otherwise, so I saved what data I needed and tried a system restore, but the computer cant find any restore points.

As a last resort I tried the Toshiba Product Recovery disk which I had never used before. It starts reading it ok, then asks for language choice English. About 10mins later it stops with the error message "Could not get a language entry from INI file! Section :[Commom] Key InstallCMD File D:\Setenv.ini.
When I hit OK to clear the message the Administrator page states Failed to initiate the raid class No RAID-continue normally.

When I restart the laptop it takes me back to my previous state with slightly blurry icons, an otherwise working laptop and all my old data is still there.

I've since bought a new Satellite L450D laptop which I am posting this from, but I am keen to try and get my L30 up and running again as a spare. I contacted Toshiba UK in case there was a fault with the recovery disk, but due licensing issues they can only redirect me to the toshiba eu backup media website to purchase a new recovery disk. At first I must say that you should back up all your important data to external device like external HD or USB stick. When you use recovery installations disc all partition will be deleted.

I don't know why you cannot use delivered recovery disc but only thing you can do is to visit nearest Toshiba authorized service provider and show the problem. If they can confirm recovery DVD is defective I presume you will get new one for free.

1: Remove all external peripherals like printer and then reboot.
2: Open the computer, remove and reseat the CMOS battery and then restart your PC.
3: If there is more than 1 RAM card, remove it and let it run on a single chip.

These are the few things you could try before reaching to a conclusion that the mobo is faulty.

Hey guys,

At the minute Windows 7 is completely failing to boot on my PC. I reach the Windows logo (with the loading animation) and it freezes after roughly half a second before restarting my computer. The machine also fails to boot into safe mode and recovery mode.

Before I rebooted my computer (which is when the problem arrived), I did two things. First I ran Disk Clean-Up to free up some space. In Disk Clean-Up I was able to free a lot of space by deleting temporary update files. After this, I unistalled AVG Antivirus in preparation to change to a different AV. During the uninstallation, my keyboard starting behaving strangely, and so when the installer asked if I wished to reboot I said yes. As my computer was shutting down, it displayed the 'Installing updates' message, but only very briefly. After that, my computer was unable to start.

I have two theories:
1. My computer was host to some sort of dormant virus (I don't actually know if this is a thing) that was activated once it detected my antivirus was gone. I don't know whether my keyboard behaviour was anomalous or a strange symptom of the infection. I ran the AVG rescue CD with a completely up to date definition library and it returned no results. I'm hoping someone can debunk this theory...

2. Running Disk Clean-up deleted files that were necessary for a scheduled update. When the update attempted to run, it failed due to the files missing, leaving my Windows installation in a broken state.

Personally, I ... Read more

My U940-102 will not boot today.
It was a very good notebook until I "upgraded" to Windows 10 this summer, after that the boot was slow (probably the upgrade did not take account of the SSD/HDD RAID configuration) and occasionally an update of Windows 10 would get stuck - on one occasion I saw no choice but to remove the battery, which killed the battery dead. Since then it had occasional disk glitches, then yesterday another update of Windows 10 took ages and then showed a "Recovering Disk .- may take over an hour" message. A minute later the system was up and running, but when I turned on the notebook today I got just a black screen and the fan whirring erratically plus a little disk noise, two white LEDs illuminated up front.

The good news is that:
- I have a backup of my data on an external HDU, although there are a few recent files I would like to recover from the PC
- I have a "twin" of the PC, a near identical and working U940-102 also "upgraded" to Windows 10.

So how should I proceed?
Is it likely (as I guess) that the problem is only a faulty HDU and it is worth replacing the HDU and the battery?
If it is the HDU, should I replace it with another SSD/HDD unit (which) or just a pure SSD ((which)?
Is there anything I should do or try before purchasing the new HDU?
Do I need to make an installation disk on a 16MB USB stick and if so would it be sufficient to do this from the "twin" under WIndows 10?

That went ok but with the flash USB stick in the faulty PC nothing happens.

then a pause, followed by the following codes from the boot agent (Intel FE v4.1.09)

PXE-E61: Media test failure, check cable
PXE-M0F: Exiting Intel Boot Agent
Insert system disc in drive.

I have a nasty feeling that the HDD has died. I can replace it if required, but is there any way of extracting the files from it before I go this far?

Answer:Satellite Pro A10 fails to boot - IDE #0 ERROR

That?s a clear symptom of a HDD fault.
The +IDE#0+ error means that the BIOS didn?t recognize the HDD (due to a hardware fault probably) and cannot boot from the HDD.

Then it swishes to the further boot possibility ?> LAN
The +PXE-E61: Media test failure, check cable+ error appears because the notebook cannot boot from LAN.

I think you should simply replace the HDD and then you should reinstall the OS again.

This helps for sure.

Using Win8PESE80_builder.exe (also 82_builder.exe), trying to build Win8pe boot iso using Win8 pro retail downloaded ISO as the source (files copied from iso to HD folder).

I receive the error in the screenshot just after starting the build.

For those using google, error text is:

Can not detect windows 8 source!!!
You must select a folder with Windows 8 files in the 'Source Directory'

I did find one post at stating that source containing the file install.esd would not work as the file is encrypted, but that is the only reference to that.

Is anyone familiar with why this error occurs and how to work-around? I have no problem building from a win7 pro source.

look inside that \sources\ folder - do you have an install.wim or install.esd

Hey everyone,

I'm not sure if this has been posted already...I looked and couldn't find anything.

So basically, my friend wakes up and turns on their computer (a Dell, running Windows XP Home Edition) and it only gets to the first loading screen (not even the Windows logo loading screen) before it automatically goes to the Windows Advanced Options Menu. We select to run windows normally, and right after, the dreaded BSOD. We restart, and same deal with the options menu automatically coming up. So we try to run it in safe mode, same thing. Then again, but we try "last good configuration" - basically, we try every single option given, all of which lead to the BSOD.

We figure there isn't much else to do but try to boot the entire system with the original system boot disk, but that doesn't work either...because it goes directly to the same Windows Advanced Options Menu automatically where all the options just lead up to BSOD, never even loading the disk.

How in God's name do you fix a computer that won't even allow you to fix it?

Any advice would be greatly appreciated...

Answer:Continuous BSOD - When even the system boot disk fails...

The particular error message/code that you get on the BSOD is often a good clue as to the cause of the problem. Search the MS KB at for the error message and hex code (a string of the form 0x00000000) for possible causes.

In order to boot to a CD to troubleshoot/repair a system the BIOS of the system must be configured to boot to a CD if one is found. Go into the BIOS of the system and look for Boot Options/Order and make sure that the CD option is set to boot before the hard drive.

if you make a forum search, you can find many threads about your issue. Have you tried to remove upper/lower filters in registry? Try to use high quality medias like verbatim and Tdk, clean with a lens cleaning disk. It's typical answers for your issue. If it doesn't help you, it can be hardware issue. By the way, have you tried to restore the factory settings?

Since approximately 1 year im the owner of a Toshiba Sattelite L550-117. It has always worked quite fine. Lately though, my pc just shuts down.

It's not like a normal shut down, where every program is exited and then windows is shut down, but its more like a crash. It just shuts down, without any notice, and bam, i can restart it.

This has never happened before, and it started approximately 10-14 days ago. Has happened 6 times now. Just before it happens, my laptop starts getting really hot, it's actually a bit painful to keep your hand in front of the ventilator. I think this problem is caused due to severe overheating of a piece of hardware.

This problem is only occuring when i am in the middle of a gaming session. I Play Call Of Duty Modern Warfare 2 and World Of Warcraft. Both games should be easily handled by my computer. They have never been a problem for my notebook, and ive played them since i got this notebook.

Please not that i have never tampered with any of the hardware. Everything is just the way it was when i bought this thing, and it has never failed me. But now it just keeps crashing. Can anyone give some suggestions on what i can do? Im from the netherlands. Do i need to send in my notebook, does it need repairs, or can i fix this myself? How does my Any information would help, actually.

This is typical behaviour by overhearing. That means that hardware reach critical temperature and when the sensors placed on mainboard register it notebook will be simply switched off. This is so called ?protecting mechanism?. This will avoid serious hardware damage.

What can you do?
Your notebook is about one year old so I can imagine there is dust inside. Dust can block cooling grill and air circulation. First step should be cleaning.
On the internet you can find many pages with useful instructions and tips how to do this on proper way.

Like the tittle says, I would like to know how to disassemble my laptop.
I tried to remove all the screws but the damn bottom plastic didn't separate it self from the top plastic.
Has anyone had this problem before?

Answer:How to disassemble Satellite L550-11H?

The question is why you want to disassemble the notebook?
I think this notebook is not very old and I think the warranty should be valid?
Disassembling the notebook would cancel the warranty.
Are you aware of this?

Notebook disassembly procedure I really tricky and you should not try this if you don?t know what you do?

However, maybe you could find some information in the web because Toshiba page does not provide such instructions.

Dear all,

I use a Satellite L550-10N computer.

1/ Main question : While looking at a film on DVD yesterday, the computer seemed to loose contact with the DVD, and did not want to read it any more after one or two successful trial. I tried with other DVDs today, and none can be read. Does it mean the DVD reader is out of service ? What shall I do then ? Has anybody met this problem ? How to identify the default ? How to repare ?

2/ Secondary question : while looking on internet for similar cases (which I have not found yet), I discovered some pilotes appear old and seem to need a replacement by newer ones. The pilotes include network adaptator (Inter(R)Wifilink 5100 AGN ; Realtek RTL8102/8103 Familiy PCI-E FE NIC), Sound, Video and game controller (ATI HDMI Audio ; Realteck High Definition Audio), System devices (Pont Intel (R) 82801 PCI-2448) and "P?ripherique d?branch?s" (in french) like USB storage device. What shall I do out of this information ?

Thanks for your help !

Answer:Satellite L550 - DVD reader- need help

1) There may be some dust on the Optical Lens, open the door and wipe the lens with a clean Microfiber cloth. If that didn't work, try this:

2) I'm guessing "pilotes" are drivers. Have a look on the Toshiba Europe website for updated drivers.

Hello all, I am a newbie here and I came here becouse I have a love-hate relation with my new laptop.

I have a Satellite L550-13c and I have problems with getting the sound right.and every time I want to adjust the sound and play a little louder music, the flude comes up and sooo loud that the whole house is awake.

My question is: How do I mute the build in microphone or how do I throw that away? I can only use my speaker up to about 45%, otherwise that FLUDE tone comes up and that is becouse that build in mic is on, while I turned all mic`s off!? I don't get it and the laptop came with windows 7 installed.

Please help me? If you know the answer, please email me, I am getting desperate

Thanks in forward;-))

Answer:Satellite L550-13c - Microphone is still on

Have you tried to reduce the microphone volume and disable the microphone boost? Therefore navigate to Windows sound settings and select the input devices. There you can change the microphone volume and in advanced options the microphone boost.
Check this!!!

Furthermore I would try updating the sound and webcam driver. Both you can get here: > Support & Downloads > Download Drivers

I own a Satellite L550 PSLWTA-00K00G (Australian) and can't find a working LAN driver for Windows 7 64-bit.
The wireless works fine and has a driver, but the wired ethernet port does not.

I've tried the recommended *Realtek LAN Driver* driver from here: [|]
And numerous other drivers from here: [|]

But every time I run an installer it says *No Realtek Network Card detected on this system*.
Which doesn't make sense because when I check the device manager it shows a 'PCI Simple Communications Controller' in need of a driver.

I normally don't post requests like this on forums but I'm at the end of my wits trying to solve this one.

Hi -

I have had this laptop for 3 years and never ever had any issues at all.
However last night it would not switch on at all.

I have trawled the net and various sites to find some help, and I have done EVERYTHING that has been suggested...taking power lead out, taking battery out, pressing on button for 30-60 seconds redoing this several times with and without battery in/out....nothing....the only led light that comes on is the little green adapter light at the front of the laptop, nothing else, no picture, no screen no noise nothing...

.Please help as I am so upset as I have many many pictures of my grandchildren on my laptop and have been so upset that this has happened. I am in my 50's and not very techy!!

I paid a lot of money for this laptop and expected it to last me years....

I do not download music or films. Thanks in advance. Trish

Answer:Satellite L550-1CC does not switch on

I?m quite sure that in your case the hardware malfunction is responsible for your notebook problem.
What hardware part might be faulty?

This is not easy to say? I guess some essential components like motherboard as well as parts connected to motherboard like RAM modules could cause such issue.

The RAM replacement is not very tricky.
So in case you want to test if the new RAM modules would solve the problem, I would recommend you to visit some computer service points in your town just to check if such part might be the troublemaker.

In my opinion its not worth to purchase some notebook parts just to check if they are really faulty? the part should be checked before you would make a purchase

Thanks in advance,

Answer:5.1 Sound for Satellite L550

As far as I know something like this is not possible. Probably you need some external device.
Use Google and check if you can find such device. Maybe some external sound card that can be connected with USB cable can help you to get 5.1 sound to your sound system.

I have a new Sat Pro L550 and need to downgrade to XP. If I want to go back to Windows 7 in future can I?

Thanks, Lisa

Answer:Installing WXP on new Satellite Pro L550

Hello Lista

In my opinion you should look forward and start to use newest operating system Windows7. It is really good operating system, well done and runs with good performance on Toshiba notebooks.
Please note that you have newest notebook model with newest hardware designed for Win7 standards.
Yes you can install Win7 anytime you want.

Win7 is fully supported and you will not have problems with it.
To go back on WXP has no much sense for me except you want to use some ?old? software designed for WXP only.

Anyway, which notebook model do you have exactly (L550-xxx)?

what are you comparing the performance to? If it's the equivalent Desktop ATI Card, that will perform faster because the Mobile ATI Chips don't have as much power to play with, and are limited due to cooling requirements.

I have a Satellite C660 - PSC0AQ-03C019 + 1B194392K

For the last year the notebook has been running fine however in the last 2 months it has had a boot issue. The first attempted boot of the day, it will not boot, it powers on gets past the boot screens past the blinking cursor top left then stalls with a blank screen (not cursor just a faint glow).

Pressing and holding the power button turning it off and then turning on again the computer will start. sometimes (not always ) it will ask to boot normally or repair.

The notebook works perfectly in use not errors not crashes. Restarting the notebook works as expected shutting down and powering on after 5 mins works fine.

If the notebook is left off for an hour it or more it will not boot the same as above. powering off and powering on the system will boot but with start normally question.

There are no errors shown in system logs

I have performed a full system reinstall from HDD recovery.
I have performed a full system reinstall from DVD recovery.
I have performed a full system reinstall from DVD on to a brand new hard drive recovery.
I have replaced the ram

I have attempted to update the bios but get an error

Drive 0 Partition 5 451MB Recovery
Drive 0 Partition 6 New Volume 48GB Primary

I'm trying to fix a PC for a relative. The problem is that it wont reboot at all after it got the blue screen at start up. The computer would continuously reboot until you turned it off. It's not possible to boot into safe mode either.

I have tried booting from a Windows XP disc. The CD drive recognises the disc and begins to boot. It will get so far and then get the error message "File sbp2port.sys is corrupted. Press any key to continue"

Doing this only results in the computer rebooting again and being stuck in a loop.

Any help or advice is much appreciated.

I was trying to install Ubuntu 10.04 from a DVD.  This was because a previous install of Ubuntu16.04 wwould not run without a transient error message, followed by an apparent recovery at start up. I then downloaded program GQRX from but this would not run properly though the Mac version runs OK on a MacBook Pro.   Ubuntu 10.04 needs the WiFi to be set up on install and this I was failing to do!! Don't ask!!! so I powered off rather than attepting to do a more 'proper' shut down.  I presume this has left the disk in a corrupted state.  Now on power up the lamps on the power switch and shift key light but screen is black and after a few seconds there is a loud click,  they both go off and the machine remains in an inert state. I have carried out the reset instructions on this site. to no avail. It has been suggested elsewhere to reinstal Ubuntu 16.04 as a test first and then continue to GQRX if this is improved, but this requires the machine to boot. I have a Win 10 USB stick witch has reinstalled Win in the past so a boot with this would be a satisfactory start.     Any help would be appreciated, so many thank in advance.    john m

Am i likely to have any problems if i follow this guide..

At the moment i just have the standard C & D partitions, and just thought i would create a smaller partition for certain files, i would only shrink the D partition by about 20 or 30 GB

Answer:Shrinking a partition on Satellite L550-1CW

I cannot read this guide now but I don't see any problems if you want to change partitions structure and shrink the D partition.
What you should do before changing partitions structure is to create recovery DVD using preinstalled ?Toshiba recovery disc creator?.

If something goes wrong and you will not be able to use HDD recovery procedure you can install OS again using this recovery installation disc.
Please note: when you use recovery disc for OS installation whole HDD and existing partitions will be deleted and you will lose this new partitions structure.

I decided to upgrade my laptop to 8Gb RAM from the standard 4Gb, so I purchased two "Corsair 4GB (1x4GB) DDR3 PC3-8500 C7 1066MHz 204-Pin SODIMM Module".

I inserted both of them into the slots and powered up but all I got was a black screen.
So next I took one of the modules out and tested again and still didn't boot up, so I moved the 4Gb module to the other memory slot and this time the laptop booted up.

I repeated with the other 4Gb module and the same, so I also repeated with the 2Gb modules that originally come with the laptop and these both worked in either slot.

So basically one of the slots on the laptop does not work with a 4Gb module but the other does.
I am now running with the 2Gb in the top slot and the 4Gb in the bottom slot to give me 6Gb but ideally I would like both 4Gb to work.

I have downloaded the BIOS update (12 May 2010) but it says my BIOS is currently at that version or higher.

Please, someone help me. Toshiba, what is the problem?

Answer:Satellite Pro L550-19T - memory upgrade to 8Gb

Problem is modules compatibility. The "Value" RAM Modules use a lot of cheap chips utilizing multiple banks/channels, which can cause compatibility problems with some Chipsets/CPU's.

I recommend you to buy high quality modules from Kingston.
Check please this page. There you can find info about memory modules for your notebook.

Have a L550 i5 / 4GR 500HDD / Ati radeon Pre / running 7 Pro 32bit with Kaspersky Pure as ISS.
This machine is only 8 months old and already I have had numerous probs with it namely slowing and BSOD.

Dealers (Toshy trained techs) found nothing wrong with it and now after 4 days back at home have got multiple probs again especially slowing, pop ups that won't go away coming up with tab changes, email windows etc ad nauseum.

Short of reformatting and reinstall of a backup - wasn't given a 7 disk I don't know whether I am going potty or there is something very wrong with this lappy.

Any ideas on how I can check it as the dealers are just charging me money for basically nothing, and am now thinking that I should just go and get a different brand as this is the second Toshy that I have had that has been so much trouble.

Don't download a lot of freeware just MBAM and CCleaner and don't game either.

After a serieus malware infection I had to perform a recovery with the recovery CD's which I was able to create. They install correct, but when starting the laptop it generates an error. Something about Windows not able to congigure the hardware.

Then I tried the original recovery CD's. There are three of them, but after installation of the first it does not ask for teh second. After restart of the computer I get the same error as with the recovery Cd's I made.

Because I am trying it one more time right now (without much hope of succeeding) I can't give the error message. If it is necessary I will give it later.

First question is why can I get a dos screen but not windows.

Not keen to scrap the computer just yet if I can help it. Would a new video card fix this.

It is not easy to say what is wrong there. If there is no way to start Windows I recommend you to reinstall it using original version hat you got with your machine.

You didn?t posted exact model name (L550-xxx) and we don't know which OS do you use exactly.
I hope you have created recovery media (DVD, USB) in the past so you can use it for recovery image installation. After doing this your notebook will have ?factory settings? and everything should be OK.

It has been suggested to me to find out if my machine's mobo is able to "hot swap" and is in AHCI mode - but how do i find out this info from the machine? Am fairly new to this sort of stuff and any help would be really appreciated.

Just as a matter of interest too - if I can use such a device is it "removed" in the same way as a USB device?

Hi there,

I have Satellite L550-11k laptop, and i was wondering if i can have external monitor working hooked up on VGA port and HDMI monitor working ( or just audio from hdmi ) at the same time.
I tried and have no luck making it work together.
I am using Ubuntu 10.04 as OS, and i think it's not problem related to operating system.

Thanks in advance.

Kind Regards

Answer:Satellite L550-11k - HDMI + VGA at the same time?

Hmm? I think this is not possible.
You will need to choose the video our option and this can be down pressing Fn + F5
From my knowledge you can choose either the internal display + VGA or internal display + HDMI but it?s not possible to choose VGA + HDMI.

In order to hook two monitors to the notebook, you will need an additional device like Dynadock W20. Such Dynadock support DVI port and you could use an HDMI to DVI adapter in order to connect an monitor.

Am setting up new Satellite L550 WINPro and partitioned the HDrive which on finish only showed "C" drive with the partition I allocated to it as usable. i called support & was advised the other space I had partitioned was hidden and unusable. Support could not advise me how to re-setup 2 usable partitions as out of their job allocation to do so.

I am used to Sony Vaio XP where you can partition as many drives as you want which are all usable. The beauty of having a separate drive to store your docs and other sensitive files on, is that if you ever have to do a recovery, the partitioned drive allocated to these is not lost.

Not sure if Toshibas are capable of this?

Can anyone help with how to partition USEABLE drives on this laptop please?

Thanx in advance.

Answer:How Do I partition the Hardrive on Satellite L550?

To be honest I don?t know if Satellite L550 has new or old recovery procedure but I know that new Satellite A660 has this with partitions works well. I will try to explain it and you check if the same can be done on your Satellite notebook

-Recovery will be started and you will see WARNING at first
-on next step you can choose ?Recovery of Factory Default Software
-on this next step choose recovery method ? Recover to custom size partition (on this point you can choose the size of drive C where operating system will be installed
-continue and finish recovery installation

When the OS is completely installed you will see one partition C only (Windows Explorer). Enter Computer management and go to ?Disk Management?. On the right side you will see HDD structure and one big unallocated area (black colour). Use this area to create own partition/partitions (logical drive).

That?s all.

I have a Satellite L550. Sometimes there are problems with the recognition of USB devices. I am using Windows7. In the device manager I found that the error code 43 is displayed under the section of USB controllers. I have already read in the Internet; that the problem could appear due to a capacitor on USB controller that stores a charge to keep some settings. These settings can get corrupted. The solution proposed is to unplug the computer and drain the charge completly from the board. When error code 43 appears, any USB device, isn't properly recognized.

Does anybody know the problem? Is the scenario I described the source of the problem, I am not sure, but I think it could be?
Is there a definite fix for the problem?

> I have already read in the Internet; that the problem could appear due to a capacitor on USB controller that stores a charge to keep some settings

It may also take place... Have you tried to update chipset utility from [Toshiba Driver Page|]? The usb controller driver is responsible for such functions that is a part of chipset drivers. So, it's worthy to update it

Answer:Cannot install Windows 7 on Satellite L550

Your posting is pretty confusing and it is not easy to understand you.
I don?t understand which setup file you want to use but you cannot install operating system with click on some setup file.

You can install Windows 7 using Toshiba recovery image (if you got one) or using original Microsoft Windows 7 installation disc.

So please be nice and explain to me which disc do you have and how do you try to install Windows 7.

I was wondering if I can extend the desktop onto an external monitor? I need to be able to work on a large double screen desktop. I know the L550 has a VGA out, however - I have a feeling it can only be used to send desktop 1 to another display or duplicate.

If it makes any difference the model I am looking to buy is the L550-1C9 or L550-1CC

Thanks :)

Answer:Satellite L550 - Can I extend the display?

Of course you can extend the display. Just connect an external monitor to your notebook and in display driver options you can select ?Extend Windows desktop on this monitor?.

Have you tested this?

I have a Satellite/Satellite L550 series/Satellite L550-117.
I can use 2 screens at the same time, using the function key ( laptop screen + VGA, laptop+HDMI, VGA+HDMI) but I would like to use "laptop screen" + "VGA output" + "HDMI output" at the same time (e.g.: to play a movie on an HD TV and work on both other screens).
I would also like to play sounds on laptop speakers "and" HDMI output, not laptop speakers "or" HDMI.

Is it possible with this laptop, and how ?

Thank you

Answer:Satellite L550-117 - How to use VGA + HDMI at the same time?

Hi buddy,

Nice idea that you have unfortunately it?s not possible to use 3 monitors at the same time. You can only use the internal monitor and one external monitor but not two external monitors. This is not supported from graphic card.

So either you use internal monitor + VGA connection or internal monitor + HDMI connection. That?s everything what you can do.

I would like to know about the sound in my laptop (L550-1CF). When I open a music, a video file or something like that which uses the sound in playing, there are craked voices if it was played in maximum or rather loudly volume, especially at the high part of the song.
It was set up in win7 32bit. So I?m waiting for your reply.
Best regard and thanks so much.

The crackling sound is annoying issue for A500 series but not for l550. Before to start discussing your problem, have you tried to update a sound driver?

I don?t know which notebook do you have but you can disable touchpad using FN+F9 key on older notebook model.
Check F keys and one of them must have touchpad symbol. You can use it to disable touchpad. If you need it again uing the same key combination you can enable it again.

Hope this is the right place. I'm going to Canada in a few weeks and I am going to bring my laptop with me. My question is how do I know if I need a voltage converter. I have asked around a few places and keep getting different answers. I was told that I would need to buy a converter by one person while another said that most laptops have built in converters. Also the Hertz frequency over there is different to here as well. Does this affect anything?

How do I check if I have a built in converter?

My laptop is a Sattellite Pro L550-17U.

Thanks in advance.

Answer:Using Satellite Pro L550-17U in North America

As far as I know you don?t need such converter. What you probably need is power adapter. Check Amazon for your country. There you can order such ?travel adapter? for US or Canada.

Toshiba Satellite L550, Windows 7

I cannot get any CDs to play. I have tried deleting the driver, re-installing the driver, nothing will make it work. Toshiba diagnostic tool says it is not there, Windows 7 says there's nothing wrong with it.

Any suggestions?

Answer:Why is the CD player not working on my Satellite L550?

> I have tried deleting the driver, re-installing the driver, nothing will make it work.
Which driver? It is not known to me that you need some driver for optical disc drive functionality.

Anyway, to be honest I don?t understand your problem. Do you have problem with optical disc drive functionality or with sound (trying to install driver)?
Do you use original preinstalled OS?
Have you the same problem with original DVDs?
Which player do you use?
Have you tried to test optical disc drive with different medias (original music CDs or CDs with saved data on it)?

Wasn't sure where to ask this so it's here in the General category.

I'm looking for a replacement laptop with a few specific requirements. I can get most of them but the last one is proving difficult. So the requirements are:

17" screen with at least 1600 horizontal resolution.
Minimum of 4Gb RAM (8 would be nice)
Run 64-bit Windows 7

and finally, the cruncher:

Supports Intel VT (Virtualization Technology)

I thought the Satellite Pro L550-17U would be OK, but looking at the Intel site, it doesn't seem that the T6570 processor supports VT. And it would have to be supported in the BIOS anyway, and nothing in the spec says it will.

Anybody able to provide any help please? I'd like to stick with Toshiba, as I've had such great reliability from them, but would consider other makes (sorry Toshiba) if that's the only option.

Answer:Suggestions for new laptop - Maybe Satellite Pro L550-17U

Hello Roger

In my opinion most important question is: how much you are ready to pay for new notebook?
Satellite L is OK but don't forget that L Series is, generally speaking, not the best Satellite model.

For which purposes do you need new notebook?

Hi all,

Recently I have installed a new Kingston SSD V300 240GB, installed Windows 10, Photoshop, Lightroom, everything fast and perfect but didn't last very long (a couple of hours) before freezing.

I've checked online for solutions, changing in BIOS from AHCI to IDE, upgrade the BIOS from v1.70 to 2.20 but nothing seam to fix it. Even installed a new Windows but still freezing problems. And is not a windows issue because sometimes is not detected by BIOS, sometimes freezes exactly before the Windows logo to appear. But, like now, after tens of restarts is working.

I even connect it to an older laptop (Satellite Pro A200) and the same behavior.

Can somebody please give me some tips in fixing this before I get mad. It's really fast when is working, I don't want to go back on HDD.
Thank you!

Hi everybody,

Does anyone know if installation or recovery media can be obtained from Toshiba, maybe as ISO image to download?
Thanks in advance for all help!

first of all, you should try to restore thwe factory settings from hdd image:

if it's not available any more, you can order from toshiba but for money:

Unfortunately, you can't download toshiba iso file from anywhere, not available. You can also get Win copy disk to install, all drivers are available:

Have had laptop for 4 weeks. No problems. Went to use it yesterday and during use got indication that battery was low. However laptop was hooked up to mains cable and green light indicated power to the laptop. Battery light is flashing amber intermittently, but laptop is not in sleep mode. Battery is not charging at all.

Any ideas?

Answer:Re: Satellite L550-1CC - Battery is not charging at all

This taken from *Toshiba technical Support*
1 Unplug the computer from the AC adapter and turn it on. Let the computer run under battery power until the computer turns off, indicating that the battery is fully discharged.
2 Remove the battery pack.
3 Using a soft cloth, wipe off the battery packs connectors and the AC adapters connectors. Re-insert the battery pack.
4 Plug the computer into the AC adapter and check the wall outlet, making sure the connection is firm.
5 With the PC turned off, let the battery charge until the battery status light or icon glows green. Unplug the AC adapter. Remove the battery. Wait 30 seconds and re-insert the battery.
Plug the AC adapter back in.

I am looking to purchase a Toshiba Satellite Pro L550-17R. I am concerned that the battery life shall not be sufficient for my requirements. I have looked at the option part:-
High Capacity Battery - Li-Ion 12 cell 9000mAh PA3727U-1BRS.

Does anyone have any idea (realistic approximation for average use) how long the run time would be with this upgraded battery used in conjunction with the laptop model specified?

Answer:Satellite Pro L550-17R - Battery run time

Hi mate,

I think it?s pretty hard to say something about this. The battery remaining time is depending on a lot of factors:
-Screen brightness
-Software applications that you use
-CPU usage

But I think a 12 cell battery should give you a good time. As far as I know this would be the maximum of cells at the moment.

Satellite L555-10N has the same 0.3M Pixcel Camera.

I have a new Toshiba Satellite Pro L550-13M running Windows 7 and I fired it up this morning and it said Windows could not start and went into startup repair.

The last thing I did with it was last night, when I ran RegistryBooster2 and it cleaned up the registry. I've used this utility loads of times with this and previous notebooks and it's been fine. I guess it's caused the problem though. It backs up the registry, but I can't restore that because I can't boot up!

So, after rebooting a few times, it eventually said "Windows cannot repair this computer automatically". If I view the diagnostic and repair details, the log lists all these tests, but says they have completed successfully. I'm on repair attempt 38. During one of them, startup repair said it was fixing a registry problem.

If I try to view the advanced options for system recovery, and select a UK keyboard, I get this message:

"You must log in to access System Recovery Options"

and my only option is to click an OK button to restart.

So, I'm stuck.

I got a Windows 7 recover CD and running startup repair on that comes up with no errors!

However, because the notebook is so new, I haven't created any restore points or recovery disks (didn't have any blank DVDs at the time).

The notebook has a HDD recovery partition, but I can't run the recovery disk to access that option because of the "you must log in" thing above.

I'm stuck!!!!! Anyone out there with any idea... Read more

Answer:Satellite Pro L550-13M - cannot run HD product recovery

Install OS again following instruction on and you will have ?factory settings? again. with ?factory settings? everything will be OK again.

We have received 5 x Satellite Pro U400-11V notebooks which are great, with one exception:

When booted (happens on all of them) with a VGA display monitor plugged in, a sharp beeping noise is played from what sounds like the system speaker. It occurs just before the first windows boot screen.

Once the windows login screen is displayed a monitor can be connected with no problem & works fine.

What can I check? I have had a look around but not found any leads thus far, hence this post.

Answer:Satellite Pro U400-11V - Sharp noise when boot with display plugged in

Checked one of your Satellite Pro with another monitor model? And where does this sound come from exactly, sure it is the notebook?
Had this once, but was not a beeping sound a guess, and this appeared when monitor did not get a signal.

After booting up, and Windows log in screen was showing, monitor worked fine.

Enter BIOS and set it to default settings. After restart enter BIOS settings again and check if HDD is recognized and listed properly.
Please send some feedback.

I don't understand why you didn?t create recovery media. This recovery media can be used if HDD option doesn?t work anymore or in case that HDD is defective. After HDD exchange using this media you can install original recovery image again.

Hi there,

i have set the boot sequence to boot from cd, but the message reads: non bootable disk.

I have tried to open it with ghost but it wants a password.

Toshiba Satellite A60.

Answer:Satellite A60 - Recovery disk will not boot - error non bootable disk

First of all you will be not able to extract the ghost image file because it?s secured as you could see.

I don?t know why you cannot boot from the Toshiba Recovery CD. But a reason could be:
- The CD is faulty (scratch, not more readable)
- You used a wrong CD
- The CD/DVD drive cannot handle this CD due to the old and faulty drive laser lens.

So you should firstly check if you can boot from other Microsoft Windows CD to find out if the CD/DVD drive is ok.
If this is ok then there is a issue with your CD!!!

Modell Nr. : PSLN8E-012013GR
Installed: Windows Vista Ultimate 64bit ( all drives at latest version )

I am presuming that the main fan of my L550 is not running correctly.
For example I want to play a high detailed game with DX10, every thing runs perfect no lags, but after 1-5 minutes the system gets slower and slower until the game crashes to desktop.
Then when I am on the desktop the L550 trys to cool down.... to late dear BIOS ;-).
I had the same problems with similar games and even with benchmarks.

So my question is: Is there a unoffical BIOS-Update which will support options for fan control? I already have the latest BIOS, but there are non. Or is there even a programm which works fine with L550 ?

Best regards, Amir.

Answer:Re: Satellite L550-11J - Crashes if I play a game

Just one question: What display driver you are using?
As far as I know your notebook is equipped with ATI HD4650 graphic card and therefore you should download the newest driver on the Toshiba page: > Support & Downloads > Download Drivers

By the way, what OS do you use? Is it the preinstalled OS from Toshiba?

If you use Windows Vista you can change the cooling method in Vista Power Management. Set the maximum cooling option and test it again.
Does it work?

NB Satellite pro L550 (ATI 5165, hdmi ), LG L245WP (hdmi). Thanks for answer.

Answer:Satellite Pro L550 - Cannot get 1920x1200 on external monitor

The HDMI cable and port would support the 1920x1200 resolution but the point is that if the graphic card or the graphic card driver doesn?t support this resolution, then you will not be able to choose and to use it.

In your case I would look into the user manual and would check if the graphic card would support this resolution. If the graphic card supports it then the issue might be related to the graphic card driver which does not contain this resolution.

Am running 7 Pro 32bit OS on a Toshiba L550 i5duo / quad thread core 4 RAM 500G HD Ati radeon premium. Up to now I had the F11 function working perfectly and recently it has stopped working at all. Then after completing a restore - which lost my Kaspersky Pure install as well it started up again. However after a couple of critical M$ updates it has gone back to not functioning. Hitting the F11 or the full screen in View drops the taskbar but only maginally reduces the size of the tools. menu, and address bars at the top. Have tried the FN key - for unlocking - no go.

This has become a really frustrating problem to find a fix for as I have searched forums gallore and Google without any luck. The M$ tech and other fixers help want money for finding the problem and I think as it is in all probability an OS problem or worse an HDD problem (had one go on my Toshy Vista machine before - not a cheap fix!!) - that M$ should be able to help without the cost, as the machine is only 7 months old! I was told bout this one and hopefully being nearer to "home" someone in here might know

Can anyone who may have had this problem or know what the problem is help me out before I go stir crazy? Will be most appreciated!!

Just a reboot of the system solves the problem.
Then the system works some time, and the problem occures again.

Hopefully anybody can help me to solve this problem finally.

I?m not sure if this will solve your problem but it?s worth a try. ;)
