Keyboard replacement for Portege A600-120

Question: Keyboard replacement for Portege A600-120

can anyone tell me what the size of the connector should be on the Portege A600-120 keyboard?

My keyboard failed last week and I ordered a new one which was supposed to be compatible with A600 but the connector was too wide.

Mine is a flat ribbon termination 15mm wide.

Keyboard serial number is G8C000903EN but a Google serach shows that is the keyboard for the R500....

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Unfortunately I cannot help you with this info but at the bottom side of the keyboard you will find label with exact part number.

Strange thing is that using Google and G8C000903EN I cannot find anything.

Can you please check this part number one more time?

I spilled water on the keyboard of my Portege Z30-A-10W (it's backlit) and some of the keys don't work. Where can a replacement keyboard (backlit with UK layout) be bought online?

Thanks in advance,

Answer:Portege Z30 - where to get replacement keyboard?

In my opinion the question is: who should exchange the keyboard?
Best option for you is to contact nearest Toshiba service provider and ask for help. They can order original keyboard for your machine and exchange it for you.

If you want to do this alone it can be risky, small mistake and you can damage something. Anyway, every keyboard at the back side has part number that can help you to find it Goolging around.

I need a replacement keyboard for my Portege R600. I need a US-international keyboard.

Can you please tell me where I can buy that? Google gave me links for R500 but not for R600. Also the part number would help, for R500 it's P000488460, but for R600 I haven't found it yet.

Answer:Portege R600 - replacement keyboard

You can buy a keyboard and other parts by an ASP (authorized service provider). Here you can search: => Support & Downloads => Find an ASP

I don?t have a part number because it?s a user to user forum. Part numbers only have ASPs.

I had the keyboard pretty bad and I took it to be changed, but when I brought it back home, we realized that it was not the same as it had before. His explanation was that the original would be much more expensive ... but it does not match the volume keys or many others and also sinks a lot in the center when writing.

Anyone know how much it can cost an original keyboard of this model to replace it ??

I would like to put a claim but I want to have all the details first.

Thank you in advance for your help.

After buying a new keyboard for the R500 on EBay about a year ago, I finally screwed up the courage to replace a badly scratched keyboard with the new one. The reason I waited? I was concerned about how to get the old keyboard off (it is well stuck down to the chassis, and it was obvious that I would damage the old one upon removal.

There is a nice general write-up about how to take an R500 apart here:

The above write-up doesn't discuss the keyboard however, so here is some additional information and some tips:

* Read this entire procedure before beginning - it's straightforward, but not for the faint of heart.

* Shut down, disconnect power, remove battery.

* Make sure you have the correct keyboard for your model. The US keyboard is p/n G83C000903US for example. The one I removed was a Rev 1, and the new one I got was a Rev 2 (don't know the difference - they look identical). These can be had as low as $40 - but verify the part number before buying.

* The keyboard connector is underneath the computer, and so you'll have to take the bottom off, carefully following the instructions in the link above.

A couple of notes: (a) the PCMCIA ribbon cable connector must be opened to disconnect the cable, as it's the only thing preventing you from removing the bottom of the computer. You can easily do this through the memory access door on the bottom, but BE... Read more

I own a R835-p88, which i bought in US a year ago. Because i had a food spillage last week on the laptop now i need to replace both keyboard and screen. As i live in UK i would like to buy it in UK.

My question is:
Will TOSHIBA P000540040 KEYBOARDOEM FOR Portege R705 R830 R835(UK) would be a replacement =item19c9b744e2 ?

Also for the lcd screen would nels&hash=item4ac6c7d5f7
this be a match ?

Answer:Portege R835-P88 - keyboard and screen replacement

The parts for Portege R830 should be compatible with the R835 too.
Usually this is the same series but released in another region.

The display seems to be compatible with the Portege R705, R830 and R835 series.
Therefore it should be compatible with your model too.

Can I insert second HDD instead of DVD drive in my Portege A600-157 ?

As far as I know this is not possible with Portege A600 series.
From my knowledge some other Portege series like Portege M400 or Portege M7xx series supports an Ultra Slim Bay HDD adaptor in order to insert an second HDD in place of the CD/DVD drive but A600 does not support this?

When trying to update the bios, I get an APPCRASH from INSTALL2.EXE
exception code c000005

I tried to run it in safe mode, but this doe not help

Thanks for help

Answer:Portege A600: cannot update to bios 3.0

The istall.exe should not crash and you should not update the BIOS in safe mode!
The Windows should be booted up and should run correctly!

Here is a Toshiba FAQ How to update BIOS:

Possibly the error code is related to corrupt windows OS or to missing some necessary Toshiba tools.
Using Win XP the Common Modules should be installed.
Using Vista or Win 7 the VAP (value added packed) should be installed.

I have bought a new Portege with Win Vista on it and Win Xp on a Revovery CD. Everything worked on my new Laptop. Then I have installed Win 7 on it without making a backup from my working system. That was a big mistake. I downloaded the Win 7 divers from the Toshiba homepage. But the Fingerprint Software means there is no sensor. The driver was installed. After much trying I have used the Recovery CD. Now I have WIN XP on my system with the same Problem. It was a Recovery CD with all drivers. It had to work. But it doesnt works.

Anyone an idea? Could anyone help me?

Best Wishes

Answer:Problem with Fingerprintsensor on Portege A600 with Win XP and Win 7

Hallo Martin

You are right. It should work properly if there is no problem with sensor itself.
Is it problematic for you to test it with Vista image too?
I mean if the situation is the same maybe you should contact nearest authorized service.

Can you start fingerprint software?

While reinstalling windows XP on Portege A600-12O, I am receiving following error:
Built-in HDD Error:The Product recovery CD is unable to reinstall the OS.

Further, I tries to install XP SP2 using Microsoft's cd (...needless to mention without any success)...
following error is flashed on the screen:
A problem has been detected and windows has been shut down to prevent damage to your computer.
if this is the first time you've seen this stop error screen, restart your computer. If this screen appears again, follow these steps:

Answer:Portege A600-12O - Can't reinstall Windows XP

In my opinion the error message from Toshiba recovery disk is very interesting and says a lot. What do you think about this?

If your HDD is defective you need a new one and you are not able to reinstall the OS. Maybe your HDD must be exchanged.

In your case I would contact an authorized service provider. The technicians can check your notebook and if it?s under warranty you should get a new HDD for free.

Please, where can I found the driver for:

Thank you in advance.

Monny - Italy

Answer:Portege A600 - Need driver for MAT****A DVD-RAM UJ 862AS

Why do you ask for that? Is the drive not visible?

I mean the driver is not needed for ODD (optical disk drive).
The Windows uses the own Microsoft driver which is always a part of the Windows system.

Do you see a yellow exclamation mark in device manager?
I recommend deleting the ODD from the device manager. Then you will have to access the registry and should remove the Upperfilters and Lowerfilters values completely from the following registry key:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Contro l\Class\{4D36E965-E325-11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318}

After that you have to reboot the unit.

Check it and I think the ODD should appear again.

I have a Portege A600-139 with built in mobile broadband modem. I have already downgraded to xp pro. My wifi, bluetooth work fine. I am also able to surf the net by using my sim card over EDGE. Since my operator does not yet offer 3G, I am not using it. I am able to surf the net by EDGE and also I am able to send and receive SMS messages by using Portege A600.

Since my Portege has a mic and speaker, would I be able to use portege as a mobie phone when I am connected to the gsm operator while my sim is inserted? If the answer is yes, how this would be done?

Answer:Could I use Portege A600 as a mobile phone?

I think the answer is no as the 3G card doesn't support the audio encoding/decoding required to be a mobile phone.

The specifications for the 3G Ericsson card mention nothing about supporting normal mobile phone calls.

Hi there,

My Portege A600-13Y BIOS is version 1.50:

- should I upgrade to 2.00WIN?
- I found this source for the biso upgrade 2.0 but there is no indication that this file is authentic TOSHIBA bios.
No checksums, no ssl certificate, nothing. Is it possible to get it in a secured / authenticated way?

Thanx for answers,

Answer:Re: Portege A600-13Y: BIOS update 1.50 to 2.00-WIN - How risky it is?

First of all you should use and download the BIOS files only from Toshiba website.
The Portege A600-13Y PPA61E is a Toshiba European notebook model and all the drivers and BIOS can be found on the Toshiba driver page.

I don?t know why you ask for the checksums or ssl certificate? the Toshiba websites are safe?
but everyone who needs the drivers or BIOS can download it?

You should only ensure that you have chosen the right notebook model and that you have downloaded the right BIOS!

But why you want to update the BIOS?
If your notebook is running troublefree then a BIOS update is not important? I follow always this advice; never change a running system.

I have an older Toshiba Portege A600-13T Netbook, I am quite satisfied with it, but in the last time the WEBCAM is not working and I have no idea what to do. If I try to activate the camera I get the answer:

The WEB Camera couldn't been initialized

In Systemcontrol the message is:

The camera couldn't been started, Code 10

If I look at the driver and try to update, the message is:

The optimal driver is already installed

May be somebody has some idea what can I do and how to proceed. Sorry my bad english!

Thank you in advance and best regards

Answer:Portege A600-13T - webcam stopped work

Error code 10 means that the device could not be started.
This can be related to driver (software) problem as well as hardware problem.

Let?s see if its an software issue: to check this I would recommend you to uninstall the Chicony webcam software firstly.
As far as I know you should be able to uninstall the software in control panel ? programs & features.
In case the Chicony webcam software will not be listed there, go to device manager and uninstall the webcam driver which you should find under ?Imaging devices?.

After system reboot, go to Toshiba EU driver page and download the Chicony webcam software in order to perform new installation.
Probably you will need to reboot the notebook once again to get it working properly.

So lets hope this short procedure would solve your issue? of course only if the issue is related to software problem.

Hi !

Can you please tell where can I get service manual for Portege A600 PPA60A? If it is not possible then how can I change HDD?

Thanks !

Answer:service manaul for Portege A600 PPA60A

If there is no HDD Cover or HDD Door, then the Top cover or Base Cover will need removing.

Why are you changing the HDD? Are you installing a higher capacity drive?

I assume the laptop is under Warranty, so you should get an ASP (Authorized Service Provider) to do it for you so the warranty is not voided. I believe there is a list of ASP's on the website, in the support section.

I have a Portege A600-133 laptop.
First it is slow with opening the My Computer screen.

Second: after ejecting a dvd or cd disc , Windows still shows the contents of the disc, system hangs for a while, a USB disconnect sound can be heard and the dvd drive disappears from Windows (in My Computer / Explorer / Device Manager)

What can this be?

I did already the high/low filters trick in the registry, but that did not solve the problem....
I opened the laptop and checked the cabling to the dvd drive, cleaned the contacts, pressed the connectors.

But the problem is still there...
OS = Windows XP SP3

Answer:Portege A600-133: DVD drive disappears from My Computer

My first idea was to remove the upper and lower filters from the registry key but it seems you have already did this?.

Nevertheless here is a MS knowledge article about mentioned upper and lower filters.

Hmm? usually if the device is not present in the device manager then this means that the device is not connected or it is dead?

You should check if the ODD (optical disk drive) is recognized in BIOS.
You should also check if it?s possible to boot from the bootable CD.

If this is not possible then this could mean that your ODD malfunctions?

G'day all.

I have an A600 (Vista original) which I recently installed to Windows 7 Professional 32 bit (reformat/reinstall). I was careful with the order of installation. All is fine except the inbuilt camera does not work and there is an unknown PCI Simple Communications controller listed in device manage. Undoubtedly the two are linked.

I have tried reloading the chipset drivers to no avail. The unknown device is PCI bus 0, device 3, function 0. Is there any way of determining what this device is so I can track down the missing driver?

Answer:Portege A600 - Unknown device after Windows 7 installation

Hi buddy,

Can you post the vendor and device ID of this unknown device? This would be useful to identify it.

But PCI communications controller could mean the webcam? In your case I would try installing the webcam driver from official Toshiba website. After the installation you should be able to start the webcam software and use the webcam.

Could you tell me if it is possible to output to dual screens on the R600 or A600 with any of the Toshiba docking solutions?

My Toshiba Portege A600-138 with Vista Business 32 does not see workgroup computers.
Computers in our office are all equipped with Windows XP.

When I connect my notebook to Local Area Network, I do not see any neighboring computers in Network Explorer.
I spent 1 hour and 40 minutes talking to a Microsoft Support Service specialist, and the only way to get access to local computers we found was to enter a computer's IP directly into the Computer Explorer path field.

I hope you understand what I mean.

The man said that there was no such problem with non-OEM versions of Windows Vista.
He meant the problem was with oem-versions of Vista preinstalled on notebooks only.
He said that probably vendors - in my particular case Toshiba - supplied their notebooks with oem VIsta images that were somehow corrupt.

Does anybody have any idea of the cause of this problem?

Answer:Portege A600-138 with Vista 32bit does not see Win XP workgroup computers

> The man said that there was no such problem with non-OEM versions of Windows Vista.
> He meant the problem was with oem-versions of Vista preinstalled on notebooks only.

That?s nonsense for me?
The Toshiba preinstalled Vista OS is that same OS like full Vista from Microsoft disk.
There is only one difference; the Toshiba notebooks are preinstalled with Toshiba tools and drivers and such drivers and tools are a part of the Toshiba recovery image which contains Vista, driver and tools?

Check this: myId=16&pageNumber=1

There you will find info that a problem has to do with the new Windows Vista network map.
Windows Vista uses a new protocol (Link Layer Topology Discovery.)
LLTD is built into Windows Vista which is why they show up properly on the network map.
But the problem is that LLTD isn't built into Windows XP, which is why they don't show up properly.

But you can fix the problem by downloading and installing the Layer Topology Discovery Responder.
Install it and your Windows XP PC will show up on the network map.

I am recently encountering problem with my portege a600-128. No wireless network adapters shown, an thus no wifi detection, moreover when using headphones, the realtek HD audio software detects them being plugged-in, but no sound is produced - i was wondering if this last one is a problem due to software or maybe a hardware damage..

Re: wifi, I tried downloading the driver from the site, but nothing changed. Actually, the only adapter shown in the device manager is the toshiba f3507g mobile broadband adapter, and in network connections i can only see that one. Trying to "scan for hardware changes" in the device manager only managed the laptop to realise that my alps pointing device (the touchpad) isn't installed (though it always worked, and still does) - trying to install the tpdrv-20081103180427.ZIP didn't change anything..

Hi buddy,

Have you checked if WLAN connection is enabled using FN+F8 key combination? If your notebook has a WLAN hardware switch, it must be set to ON!
Furthermore I would recommend loading the default settings in BIOS.

Regarding your sound issue, have you tried updating the sound driver?

My toshiba laptop came with absolutely no discs whatsoever, is this normal?

The wifi can find networks but when i try to connect i get a message saying invalid network key (or soemthing like that) een when i've put the correct password in multiple times.

And lastly, when i start up the laptop my left click on both the button and touchpad will only right click the desktop, but then when a window is opened and i "left click" it acts as if the windos is in the background.

I found what i believe is the latest driver to the touchpad, installed it, all works except the right click doesn't work whatsoever.

When i restart my laptop it reverts back to the old touchpad drivers and so i have to reinstall the driver via keyboard.

I assume you didn?t read the user manual because there you can find the reason for that.

Regarding your issues it?s hard to say why this happen but I still assume that you are try to put in the wrong password. Please check this again or use another password.

And have you tested an external mouse? Does the same happen?

I have 2 identical A600.
On of them displays 6 temperature probes - for example on Everest
Core 1
Core 2
Hard Drive

On the second one:
Hard Drive

the second one overheats, always above 80C (the fisrt bellow 60) and sometime crashes apparently by excess of temperature.

Thanks for help

Answer:Portege A600 - Missing temperature probes in Everest and overheat

I don?t believe such 3rd party tools but if your notebook is overheating and shuts down you should clean it using compressed air spray. This could blow out the dust from the cooling ventilators.

Make also sure that you are using the newest BIOS version. You can download it on the Toshiba website.

Good luck! :)

I have a problem with the Toshiba XP Factory build for the Portege A600 and Portege R600.
If you try to modify the sound properties for the Webcam using the Camera Assistant Software with the sound muted, the Camera Assistant application will hang & Windows is unable to close it or even shut down. The only way to shut down is to hold down the power button until the machine switches off.

So far, the only workaround I can come up with is to turn the volume down to zero rather than using the mute option. The trouble is, if you forget and mute the sound rather than turning it down and then try to modify the sound properties, its 'game over'. Also, this isn't really satisfactory as the policy is to keep the machines muted until the sound is needed.

It doesn't happen with the Vista Build, only the XP Build.

My guess is that this will happen on any machine using the Chicony Webcam & software with the Realtek HD audio but I haven't tried it on enough machines yet to be sure. So far, I have recreated it on two A600s and an R600. The machines are not faulty and you can create the problem, 'straight out of the box'. Just do the following:
1) Use the Toshiba supplied Product Recovery DVD to restore the Toshiba Windows XP SP2 factory build
2) Once you have done all the set up stuff, mute the sound
3) Open up the Camera Assistant Software application & select the properties
4) Choose the audio settings tab

That's it, the application has hung. The version of t... Read more

I don?t have a Portege but U400 with integrated webcam and preinstalled Win XP.
I installed a clean Win XP and then updated the XP to the latest state and installed all possible and available drivers from the Toshiba page.

I followed the steps described in your message and I have to say that I didn?t notice any strange issues? the webcam software is still running properly?

I don?t know what the problem could be but I recommend checking the sound driver fro update? maybe you could use the one from the Realtek page?
Furthermore check if the BIOS has been updated to the latest state and if your Win XP is up to date?.

Internal Sata 500GB Seagate gave in recently and I have purchased a 1TB sata drive to replace it with.    So, following the Lenovo Lenovo Hardware guide (Lenovo IdeaCentre A600 Hardware Replacement Guide V1.0.pdf) , i added the new drive, but system will not pass beyond: Broadcom UNDI PXE-2.1 v11.4.1PXE-E61:  Media test failure, check cablePXE-M0F: Exiting Broadcome PXE ROM I continue to get that When I put the defective drive back, it doesn't show the above error msg, goes post BIOS ... show up to the point where it reports that the Hard Disk is bad.  (The minute I switch to the new drive, I get the above message and no more progress) I have gone to BIOS and drive shows the accurate size and no error at all post bios (No, F1 to continue) yet i can't even boot from a bootable CD when startup is done against the DVD drive. Any idea?

Answer:Lenovo IdeaCentre A600 Hard Drive Replacement Trouble

hi ichoudhury,
Welcome to the Forums.
Can you try to:
1. Insert the 1TB HDD and the bootable OS disc into the CD/DVD drive
2. Boot into the BIOS and under the Startup Tab, navigate to the Startup Sequence and set the CD/DVD drive as the first boot device and the 1TB HDD as second.
3. Press F10 to save and exit BIOS and see if the unit boots from the OS installation disc. If everything works, proceed to install the OS on the 1TB HDD.
4. If everything works out, boot back into the BIOS > Startup Tab > Startup Sequence and set the 1TB HDD as the first boot device.
Let me know your findings,

Quick question - will a keyboard for a Portege S100 work in a Portege M100?

Layout looks similar; albeit a different colour.

Answer:Will a keyboard for a Portege S100 work in a Portege M100?

I think you cannot use the same keyboard because the Portege S100 supports the an-easy-to-use 84-key (US) or 85-key (UK) keyboard and the Portege M100 supports the an-easy-to-use 85/86-key keyboard.
Furthermore the connector of the S100 supports the CN3230 keyboard interface 34 pin connector and the M100 supports the PJ3230 keyboard 34pin connector.

So possibly this could be a problem.
I recommend using the original keyboards released for the each notebook model.

HI folks,

Can someone point me towards a replcacement HDD for the R400? The ones listed on are horrendously overpriced, of course, so I'm looking for a standard 1.8" drive that will fit this model.
I notice the present HDD has a female connector while most HDDs appear to have a male one (I say "appear to" because nobody actually seems to have actual pictures of their drives for me to find out!)

Answer:HDD replacement on Portege R400

According notebook specification your notebook has 80 GB 1.8-inch PATA HDD.

To be honest I don't know what do you mean with ?standard HDD?. The fact is you must use compatible HDD for this notebook model. According notebook specification you can use MK8007GAH HDD. In my opinion you should replace HD with the same model. So you can be sure everything will be OK. I also believe 80 GB capacity is enough.

I found nice pictures for you:
Here is the HDD picture
Here you can see connectors

At the end I must say that HDD replacement seems to be easy but these 1,8? HDDs are more sensitive and pressure on the wrong place can damage the HDD and data can be lost.

Do you really want to replace it alone?

i have a Portege R400-106, which no longer has a hard drive - so can't just get the number off the old one :-(
i'm trying to work out which hard drive i can put in it,
i can see that hard drive space in the laptop has IDE prongs. It is possible that this is PATA type, but my research so far suggests that when drives say they are IDE, i should be OK (please tell me if i have this wrong!)
i believe it is a 2.5" drive i'm looking for and the original drive would have been 80GB, which is about what i think i need.
I think i may be wanting an MK8025GAS ???

i found one at:
but the cost is pretty prohibative as i live in the UK and the shipping is loads.

I can't seem to find anywhere that can tell me which drive is suitable
cheers in advance for any ideas :-)

I just ordered an R700 and am hoping to upgrade the 320GB HDD to an OCZ Vertex 2 SSD.
How easy is it to replace the hard drive in the R700? Will I need to remove the keyboard is there a panel on the back?
What size hard drive will I need - 2.5" or 1.8"?
Will an SSD simply plug in using the existing connections, or is something else required?

Answer:HDD replacement on Portege R700

According notebook specification Portege R700 has 2,5? HDD and it is HDD with SATA interface so I think you should order 2,5? SSD with standard SATA connectors.

HDD is placed at the bottom side near the cooling vent and it is fixed with one screw only.

Remove the screw and HDD cover. You will see how the HDD is placed and how it must be removed.
It is very simply and you can do this alone.

My portege has started freezing after about 10-15mins of use and the internal fan doesn't seem to be kicking in any more.

I am assuming it's the fan that is causing the problem as the screen stays the same (i.e probably not graphics problem) and there are no odd blue screens or errors and CTRL ALT DEL does nothing..

I've had the laptop apart and checked for dust and the fan connection and it all seems ok.

Is it possible to pickup a fan assembly on it's own, or does it come attached to the heatpipe (it's back together now and can't remember what it looks like!)

Do the entire 3400 series use the same fan assembly?

Apologies for all the questions but i really need my little laptop working again

Many thanks :)

Answer:Fan replacement on Portege R200/205

How to find right part? I don't know man. Either you will contact nearest Toshiba service and ask for help. They can check Toshiba database and give you exact part number or you must disassemble whole notebook and check if fan has some sticker with part number.

Please disassemble your notebook just if you know what you are doing. Before you start to do this disconnect AC adapter and remove the battery.
From my experience for fan replacement the whole notebook must be disassembled. Fan has small connector to the mainboard for power supply and it must be disconnected from the mainboard.

Be careful with all this. Notebook design is very sensible and small mistake can result with broken parts like cover or small plastic holders.

Please think twice before you start to remove screws. :)

I have read here in the forum about the HDD upgrade on Portege M200 and the guy has upgraded the HDD to 160GB.
Therefore I would assume that you could upgrade the HDD to 320GB as well.

You would need a 2.5? IDE HDD and it?s no matter what speed the HDD would support.

BIOS update is helpfull, but I don't know how much GB the newest BIOS for P7200 can handle! You have to try and test!

Problem: On my laptop Portege R100 the RTC battery needs to be replaced (laptop loses system date and time when starting up after having automatically done a shutdown when batteries were going empty).

Question: I am trying to figure out if this RTC battery is easily replacable ie can I order it at my dealer and can their technician quickly/easily replace the battery or is this battery soldered onto the motherboard and does the replacement therefore have to be done by Toshiba technicians meaning my portable will be gone for a couple of weeks?

Thanks a lot for any input.

Answer:Portege R100: RTC battery replacement

As far as I know the RTC battery is not soldered on the motherboard but only connected with the cable. To remove the CMOS battery you have to disconnect the RTC battery cable from PJ8760 on the system board and remove the RTC battery from the RTC battery slot.

That?s all. But if you have no experience in such things you shouldn?t replace it yourself. The safely option is to contact the Toshiba service partner to replace the battery. There you can also order the compatible one

Dear All,

My Z830-10f (an Italian model - core i5 doesn't power on anymore and is giving a 72h code (PPV voltage is not more than 0.68V when the computer is booting up).

After a bit of googling I've understood that the motherboard has a serious problem and should be replaced.

On ebay I've found an used mb from USA but it comes from another model Z830 Intel Core? i7-2677M @1.80GHz. Aesthetically the motherboards appear identical, thus I'm wondering if they can be compatible.

I know that I should find the exact spare part, but it's really a jungle and probably all the differences are related to the different codes used worldwide.

Any suggestion is really appreciated!!!
Thanks a lot in advance!

Answer:Portege Z830 - motherboard replacement

From my point of few the new motherboard from another Z830 would be compatible.
The motherboard has exactly the same dimensions but supports just another CPU.

I guess the BIOS would be already available on this new motherboard and the new other i7 CPU supports internal GPU unit (Intel HD Graphics 3000).
Therefore you should not get any problem with the graphic card as well as other parts like RAM or HDD...

I think you should get a shot and go with this mobo.

Dear All,

I have a Portege M300 which i bought around 3 or 4 years ago and i am very happy with and with no problems. The laptop originally came with a 60GB and i wanted to upgrade it to one with a larger capacity, one of 160GB! My laptop has around 1.2Gb Ram and runs on windows XP SP3.

I recently bought a Samsung HD-160 (160GB) which should be compatible with my laptop. After installing it from scratch and used it for about 2 weeks, the computer suddenly stopped. The HDD stopped spinning and an ERROR#0 came up every time i tried to restart. There was NO WAY the HDD would spin again so i contacted Samsung and they replaced it. The HDD did have a slight smell of component burning, but very slight.
I replaced the malfunctioned HDD with a 2nd replacement and to my disbelief, the SAME THING happened again just after 3 hours of use!!! Portege M300 is pretty old notebook and maybe you should be careful with these upgrades.
According notebook specification your notebook can handle with 100GB HDDs but I am pretty sure you can use 120GB as well.

My Portege's DVD drive is making horrible clicking noises and appears to be on its way out. I have read from a thread on here that universal drives might not work as the Portege's BIOS has assigned the DVD drive as slave and that the new drive must be slave in order to work. Is this correct? I really do not want to be doing the soldering fix!

I have another laptop which has a TSST drive in and i plugged this in and the portgege showed an ide error. Is it just a matter of having the correct firmware or is the issue regarding the ide settings mentioned above.

I have shortlisted a Toshiba dvd drive PA3162E-2CD2 but it says it is compatitble with the Portege 4000, 4010, M100 and Tecra 9000, but does not list the A100 as compatible. Does anyone know if this drive will work on my machine?

Thanks in advance.

Answer:Replacement DVD drive for a Portege A100

If you check User?s manuals for Portege A100 is there a list of compatible ODDs? Problem is that all Toshiba notebooks do not have the same hardware platform and all ODDs will not work on each notebook model. As far as I know pin assignment is different. Because of that you need compatible ODD for your notebook model.

As I said at the beginning usually all compatible ODDs are listed in User?s manuals document. Please check it. If not please let us know.

Hello James

Unfortunately the A200 is not known to me but the concept is always the same. At first check if you can find HDD cover at the bottom side of your unit. If you can not find it from the outside than is the situation much complicated. It is possible that the HDD is placed under the keyboard.

If you have no much experience don?t do it alone because you can damage something and the warranty will not be valid anymore.

I have a R700-1DD with stock 320GB HDD. I want to upgrade this to 500GB. This upgrade should be quite straightforward, cloning the old to the new.

However, I was wondering about the HDD password / fingerprint.
My HDD it set to require a password/fingerprint on boot - I guess this is all related to the BIOS and the disk itself but I'm not sure exactly how.
I believe the HDD itself is locked - this is not a Windows or BIOS password.

If I change the HDD will I still be able to use the HDD boot password/fingerprint? Are there any HDD hardware requirements I need to consider before buying the new HDD? Like does it need to be a specific type of HDD to work with HDD password/fingerprint?

Answer:Portege R700-1DD: Questions about HDD replacement and passwords

Hi bullerd,

The HDD password is stored on HDD so if you exchange the HDD you have to set a new HDD password in BIOS. The password is not stored in BIOS. Furthermore the fingerprints are also stored on HDD or let?s say fingerprint software but the whole operating system must be installed after HDD exchange so it?s new problem.

So both passwords you mentioned are stored on HDD so it?s no problem to exchange the HDD. :)

Normally the RTC batteries in these models are rechargeable.
If not yet done, please let the unit run overnight (not off, not hibernated, not standby - but ON) and see if the issue is resolved.

The hard disc on my portege 4000 has just crashed, can anyone please provide any guidance on a suitable replacement or upgrade part, where to purchase one and what is involved in making the change?

Answer:Portege 4000 hard disc replacement

the HDD replacement is not very difficult on the notebooks because mostly the HDD is laced at the bottom of the unit and it?s only necessary to remove the little cover.

To remove the HDD, follow the steps below:
1. Turn the computer upside down.
2. Remove two silver screws securing the HDD cover.
3. Lift off the HDD cover.
4. Grasp the plastic tab on the HDD to disconnect the HDD from the system board, then pull the HDD.
5. Place the HDD pack on a flat surface and remove four flat-head screws.
6. Remove the HDD bracket.

That?s all :)

PS: I think you can use 10Gb, 20Gb and 30Gb HDDs

Why do you want to copy files from CD to your HDD? To install an operating system, in your case Windows XP just boot from CD and follow the instructions given by the setup routine.

You could change boot priority in BIOS settings or by pressing C key while notebook is booting up.

The install guides states you must run the T&D FD after replacing the motherboard and run the initial configuration option.

Does anyone know what this utility is and where to find it ?

Its also the same utility for setting DMI information.

Answer:Portege M200 - Where to get T&D FD Utility after motherboad replacement

As far as I know such Utilities are special tools which are not designed for public usage. Only the Authorized Toshiba Service Provider has got such tools and utilities.
Because of that I don?t see any other option as to contact the ASP in your country and to ask for the help.

Hi all,
My Satellite Z30-A keys started popping out, so i thought to use a Portege Z30-A keyboard (much easier to get a hold of) as a replacement. The two models are pretty much identical except for the blue AccuPoint thingy in the middle of the keyboard, so hopefully the Portege keyboard will Just Work, with the trackpoint idly sitting there doing nothing. Maybe someone here has experience with this and can confirm/deny this is possible?

For reference, here's the Portege's keyboard:

ThinkPad Super Low Profile TrackPoint Cap Set, Part number:4XH0L55146. this is the cap fits to thinpad x1 yoga.

since having z20t for the last year and half. I still can not find any other 2-in-1 to be better. this comes from someone who had previously only used the most expensive thinkpad models and updating every 1-2 years.

however, the trackpoint cap drives me a bit crazy as I rely on it most time as a 10+ year thinkpad user. it is tiny, needs a lot of force to move, and after a while, the surface becomes smooth and easy to slip.

I did tons of search and bought quite a few replacement caps to try, none worked. and it bugs me that toshiba does not sell a replacement either. so one day when the cap wears out or damaged, I would need to buy a new keyboard dock at least.

finally I found one that works perfectly, from no other than thinkpad itself.
ThinkPad Super Low Profile TrackPoint Cap Set, Part number:4XH0L55146. this is the cap fits to thinpad x1 yoga.

It fits perfect into the space, right size recess to connect to keyboard, just a bit higher than keyboard surface for easier usage. It is also low enough that it does not touch screen at all (far from it) when closed.

more importantly, as it is bigger and have many dimple on it. it is actually much much better user experience. I would say now it would give similar feeling as the best thinkpad trackpoint now. no slip, needs much less force to move around.

I found this solution by accident as I bought a... Read more

The hard drive in my beloved Portege R500 has died.

The model is a Toshiba MK1237GSX and I am looking for a compatible hard drive to replace it with as finding this exact model is proving difficult. Alternatively and my first choice would be to replace the hard drive with an ssd drive - is this possible and any recommendations on model?

Any help is much appreciated

Thanks in advance

Answer:Portege R500 - PPR50E Replacement Hard Drive or SSD

If that HDD is a standard 2.5" SATA Drive, you can install an SSD. But be aware that SSD's are still new so there can be compatibility problems. If you avoid the cheaper SSD's and ensure it has the latest firmware, chances are it will work ok. If not, try another SSD brand/model.

I put Fujitsu SATA HDD into Portege S100-s1133 than in the BIOS settings at raid array section I couldn't able to change built in hard drive form JBOD to 1RAID-0. When I made that change in BIOS it could not recognize the RAID drive so I could not install OS.

If anyone knows about this issue could you please help me?

Answer:Portege S100: Not able to change JBOD to 1RAID-0 after HDD replacement

Before you will install the OS you will have to implement the RAID driver.
The RAID driver you will find on the Toshiba driver page!!!

Download it and save it on the FDD disk. Then connect the external FDD USB drive to the notebook. During the OS installation setup will ask you for a raid driver installation. As far as I can remember you need to press the S button.

But may I ask you what CD you use??? If you use the recovery CD you don?t need to install the RAID driver additionally because this driver already exists on the CD.
It?s only needed if you will install the OS from the original Microsoft OS CD

PS: Please check also you user manual. There is everything described in the simply way ;)

The existing batter will no longer charge. It is a Li-ion PA3191U-5BRS - 10.8V 4700 mAh. I have an almost new replacement battery for my earlier Portege with idenitcal fittings but with 10.8V 4600mAh. It is not a Toshiba model and states that it is to replace PA3176U-2BRS. Can I use it in my M700 without risk of damage or reduced performance?

Answer:Portege M700 - Battery replacement - will alternative work?

To be honest I doubt that it will work because the specifications are different.
In your case I wouldn?t try it, in worst case you destroy the computer.

It would be better if you buy a new battery with the exact specifications. Authorized service provider in your country can make you an offer for this.

I have a Toshiba Portege Z835 P330 ultrabook. I accidently broke the old screen and ordered a replacement from My original 14" screen was a samsung model. The one sent me was an LG. The First LG screen I received partially worked as in I could see graphics, but no backlight. I sent the screen back for an exchange, and they mailed me a replacement. Same problem: Graphics, but no backlight at all. I am perplexed. What could the issue be? I've quadruple checked the connection and restarted the laptop multiple times. It doesn't appear the video cable is damaged.

The Samsung model # of my original screen is LTN133AT25-T01
The LG Model # of the "compatible" replacement is LP133WH2

Any insight would be appreciated as im not looking forward to hashing it out with the tech anymore. Thanks

Answer:Backlight not working on replacement LED Screen Toshiba Portege z835

There are two types of laptop LCD displays: older versions that use a separate fluorescent backlight bulb with an inverter, and newer models that use a true LED backlight integral with the display screen.
Do you know which type your laptop uses? Pure LED backlit screens with have only one ribbon cable to it. CCFL screens will have a second connection.

Can a laptop Toshiba L650-1M0 can replace the default standard keyboard for backlit keyboard?

Sorry for my bad english, but I used the Google translator because I do not know how the English language. I only know the Polish ;)

Please write without mistakes, because Google translator will not be able to translate me.

Answer:Satellite L650-1M0: replacement of default standard keyboard for backlit keyboard

>Can a laptop Toshiba L650-1M0 can replace the default standard keyboard for backlit keyboard?

Recommend checking this thread:

Usually the upgrade from a normal keyboard to backlit keyboard should not be a big problem if there is an additional connector on mainboard for such a backlit keyboard.
If such additional connector is not available, then you will NOT be able to use the backlight keyboard.

Hi guys, I replaced my Toshiba R100's LCD screen, as the one they had in there was faulty. It looked like that was a replacement at some time though. Anyway, I got my new screen, but the video cable doesnt reach to the top of the LCD screens circuit board. How am I meant to connect it to the screen? Is there an extension cable or what? The screen they had in there previously looked like they soldered about 8 copper wires to the digitizer.

Heres 2 pics of what I mean

Answer:Portege R100 video cable doesnt reach replacement LCD screen

From where did you purchase this screen?
Are you 100% sure that it's fully compatible with your notebook Prot?g? R100?

Looks like it?s not fully compatible?
However, if an additional cable is needed you could get it from the Toshiba ASP in your country.

In your case I would recommend contacting the guys and to ask for compatible cable!

Hi! I've got Lenovo IdeaPad Yoga 13 Silver (, and while I am quite content with the device, my keyboard stopped working. I was wondering whether any of you might know and suggest an online reseller (official or otherwise), where I could get hold of a replacement keyboard. Now, I suppose backlit keyboard versions of newer Yoga laptops will not work I guess, will they? From what I have read Yoga 13 Silver does not have the slot required for backlit, but aside that, will the keyboard function and will it fit (dimension-wise)? If so, what is the voltage and current required? Would soldering a small battery to the backlit cable be a good idea (I accept the fact that I wouldn't be able to regulate it)? Thank you in advance!ck

My laptop got wet (water).. At first only one key was not working.
It got worse when i tryed to fix it I put it under a fan and it made most keys not respond
some keys were working but i decided to change the keyboard.
( i didnt power it off and just used a usb keyboard)

I have replaced the keyboard from ebay
My question is about the back lit strip.
My old keyboard; had a ribben cable coming out to LED light node and additional black plastic wraping on the backside of keyboard.
I broke the ribben from the old keyboard ( no not the regular ribben cable )
I reconnected the new keyboard which; did not have led lights or black plastic
I go into keyboard on control pannel and it says my keyboard is connected (1 to usb & 2 to the computers port Standard P/S2 keyboard& is working fine
.( it isnt working at all)
Does my laptop need to have the led circuit connected?
is it a loop to the keyboard ribben ( which i have connected)

I have talked to someone who believes this is for led(s) and all that is uncommon on non-backlit keyboards and should not be necessary for the keyboard to work and we believe its only lighting.
keyboard to turn on but I am missing a ribben connection to this extra strip of LED lights and what else ?

Should i order a plastic led light strip and stick it to my new keyboard to match the original
Do i need to complete the circuit where the led ribben was connected as it is a loop or safety feature or to complete the circuit
is there any chance i bl... Read more

So the 'S' key has worn out and I don't know where to find a replacement. Be informed also that I live in Malaysia so Amazon and Ebay is not really an option for me.Can I DIY it?

Answer:Y510P keyboard keys worn out - Looking for Keyboard Replacement

Since you have not received any suggestions till now.
I will say ebay is the best place, not sure why it is not available in Malaysia.
Also, if you cannot find a vendor I will say that it is only a cosmetic effect, better with a cosmetic defect than a functional one while replacing the key.
You can try this website -

Hi All,

I have replaced my destroyed keyboard with an SP keyboard.
Whilst there is numerous ways in Microsoft to use the keys, all I want to do is to install this keyboard in the hardware section of the computer so the shift 6 shows the & button instead of the old keyboards shift 7.

Any ideas

Hi, I a colleague of mine dropped some fish oil (by accident) on my keyboard. Now more than half of my keys are not working. I removed the keyboard, cleaned it (still not working properly), cleaned the laptop (none of the oil got inside the laptop), and now want to replace it.
The problem is that I have no idea where to buy one. The keyboard model is: NSK-T691D.
Any thoughts?

Answer:Portege 7200 Keyboard

Hi Stevie

You can try to install some ?Keyboard test software?. I have tried one from PassMark. In my opinion you should try it.

It will be interesting to know since when this problem occur. On this way it is not easy to say what the problem can be but it seems to be that your keyboard is defective. You can contact service partner and let them check the unit.
