Re: Portege A600-13Y: BIOS update 1.50 to 2.00-WIN - How risky it is?

Question: Re: Portege A600-13Y: BIOS update 1.50 to 2.00-WIN - How risky it is?

Hi there,

My Portege A600-13Y BIOS is version 1.50:

- should I upgrade to 2.00WIN?
- I found this source for the biso upgrade 2.0 but there is no indication that this file is authentic TOSHIBA bios.
No checksums, no ssl certificate, nothing. Is it possible to get it in a secured / authenticated way?

Thanx for answers,
Schneiderlein

Preferred Solution: Re: Portege A600-13Y: BIOS update 1.50 to 2.00-WIN - How risky it is?

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Answer: Re: Portege A600-13Y: BIOS update 1.50 to 2.00-WIN - How risky it is?

Hi

First of all you should use and download the BIOS files only from Toshiba website.
The Portege A600-13Y PPA61E is a Toshiba European notebook model and all the drivers and BIOS can be found on the Toshiba driver page.

I don?t know why you ask for the checksums or ssl certificate? the Toshiba websites are safe?
but everyone who needs the drivers or BIOS can download it?

You should only ensure that you have chosen the right notebook model and that you have downloaded the right BIOS!

But why you want to update the BIOS?
If your notebook is running troublefree then a BIOS update is not important? I follow always this advice; never change a running system.

My current bios version is 1.6, the latest is 3.0
When trying to update the bios, I get an APPCRASH from INSTALL2.EXE
exception code c000005

I tried to run it in safe mode, but this doe not help

Thanks for help

Answer:Portege A600: cannot update to bios 3.0

Hi

The istall.exe should not crash and you should not update the BIOS in safe mode!
The Windows should be booted up and should run correctly!

Here is a Toshiba FAQ How to update BIOS:
http://aps2.toshiba-tro.de/kb0/HTD9502M10000R01.htm

Possibly the error code is related to corrupt windows OS or to missing some necessary Toshiba tools.
Using Win XP the Common Modules should be installed.
Using Vista or Win 7 the VAP (value added packed) should be installed.

USB boot option seems to have disappeared from bios boot sequence menue after I installed bios 3.00. I wonder why this happened and how I can bring it back.

Answer:Portege A600 - Dissapearing of USB boot option after updating to bios 3.00

Hello,

normally the USB boot option is available and you can select the supported modi in the bios settings.
In a company environment it is possible to disable USB as boot device with some special tools. In this Case yo ushould ask your administrator.
If you are a single private customer you should visit an ASP.

Hello, I'm currently waiting for the X200T that I ordered to be shipped to the reseller. Having bricked notebooks with BIOS updates twice already, I'm somewhat scared of doing such an update on the brand new thing. So, my question is, how risky is updating the BIOS? On my desktop PC, the BIOS consists of two parts, some read-only low-level BIOS, and the real BIOS that can be flashed. When turning on the PC, the low-level BIOS checksums the real BIOS and if it appears corrupted, it will try to flash it using a ROM supplied on a USB stick or the CD drive. So there really is no way to permanently kill the thing, since I can always restore it if something goes wrong. Is there anything like this for the X200T? I've heard that on some notebooks you can press certain key combinations that will put it into some sort of rescue mode that will allow you to reflash your BIOS with a ROM supplied on a CD or similar. Also, in case something does go wrong, is this covered by the warranty? Thanks in advance, Julian

Answer:X200T How risky is a BIOS update?

Opfer wrote:So, my question is, how risky is updating the BIOS? Some sort of rescue mode that will allow you to reflash your BIOS with a ROM supplied on a CD or similar. Also, in case something does go wrong, is this covered by the warranty? Thanks in advance, JulianWell, let's say this way, updating BIOS is risky as always since it's prone to corrupt. However, that incident is not likely to occur if you are careful. >> Flashing BIOS by CD was better because it will boot to shell which has nothing extra running (less chance to corrupt)>> Flashing BIOS in Windows is acceptable, but you really need to close every application running at the time. Flashing take only few minutes at most, so be patient. [the less icons on taskbar, the better] More importantly, don't do anything while flashing, just watch patiently ;-) That's the best. If something goes wrong, just call Lenovo, they will take care of you =)  Since BIOS is needed in order to start your machine, there is no any sort of rescue mode to help this issue if BIOS is corrupted. Some desktop has 2 BIOSes, so there will be no problem if one goes wrong. The other one will take care of everything, but that doesn't happen on laptop/tablet. Hope this help,sipp11 ps. If you have no issue with current BIOS and are not tech-geek, I recommend you not to flash any update. It, most of the time, doesn't give you any boost in any mean.

Can I insert second HDD instead of DVD drive in my Portege A600-157 ?

Answer:Second HDD for Portege A600

Hi

As far as I know this is not possible with Portege A600 series.
From my knowledge some other Portege series like Portege M400 or Portege M7xx series supports an Ultra Slim Bay HDD adaptor in order to insert an second HDD in place of the CD/DVD drive but A600 does not support this?

While reinstalling windows XP on Portege A600-12O, I am receiving following error:
Built-in HDD Error:The Product recovery CD is unable to reinstall the OS.

Further, I tries to install XP SP2 using Microsoft's cd (...needless to mention without any success)...
following error is flashed on the screen:
A problem has been detected and windows has been shut down to prevent damage to your computer.
if this is the first time you've seen this stop error screen, restart your computer. If this screen appears again, follow these steps:

Answer:Portege A600-12O - Can't reinstall Windows XP

Hello

In my opinion the error message from Toshiba recovery disk is very interesting and says a lot. What do you think about this?

If your HDD is defective you need a new one and you are not able to reinstall the OS. Maybe your HDD must be exchanged.

In your case I would contact an authorized service provider. The technicians can check your notebook and if it?s under warranty you should get a new HDD for free.

Please, where can I found the driver for:

MAT****A DVD-RAM UJ 862AS

Thank you in advance.

Monny - Italy

Answer:Portege A600 - Need driver for MAT****A DVD-RAM UJ 862AS

Hi

Why do you ask for that? Is the drive not visible?

I mean the driver is not needed for ODD (optical disk drive).
The Windows uses the own Microsoft driver which is always a part of the Windows system.

Do you see a yellow exclamation mark in device manager?
I recommend deleting the ODD from the device manager. Then you will have to access the registry and should remove the Upperfilters and Lowerfilters values completely from the following registry key:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Contro l\Class\{4D36E965-E325-11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318}

After that you have to reboot the unit.

Check it and I think the ODD should appear again.

Hello,

I have bought a new Portege with Win Vista on it and Win Xp on a Revovery CD. Everything worked on my new Laptop. Then I have installed Win 7 on it without making a backup from my working system. That was a big mistake. I downloaded the Win 7 divers from the Toshiba homepage. But the Fingerprint Software means there is no sensor. The driver was installed. After much trying I have used the Recovery CD. Now I have WIN XP on my system with the same Problem. It was a Recovery CD with all drivers. It had to work. But it doesnt works.

Anyone an idea? Could anyone help me?

Best Wishes

Martin

Answer:Problem with Fingerprintsensor on Portege A600 with Win XP and Win 7

Hallo Martin

You are right. It should work properly if there is no problem with sensor itself.
Is it problematic for you to test it with Vista image too?
I mean if the situation is the same maybe you should contact nearest authorized service.

Can you start fingerprint software?

I have a Portege A600-139 with built in mobile broadband modem. I have already downgraded to xp pro. My wifi, bluetooth work fine. I am also able to surf the net by using my sim card over EDGE. Since my operator does not yet offer 3G, I am not using it. I am able to surf the net by EDGE and also I am able to send and receive SMS messages by using Portege A600.

Question:
Since my Portege has a mic and speaker, would I be able to use portege as a mobie phone when I am connected to the gsm operator while my sim is inserted? If the answer is yes, how this would be done?

Answer:Could I use Portege A600 as a mobile phone?

Hi

I think the answer is no as the 3G card doesn't support the audio encoding/decoding required to be a mobile phone.

The specifications for the 3G Ericsson card mention nothing about supporting normal mobile phone calls.

There is no solution but after keyboard replacement everything was OK again.
Have you tried to download some keyboard test software and check functionality?

You must be 100% sure it is not hardware fault. I know it is definitely stupid solution but I strongly recommend you to reinstall original Visa and check keyboard functionality again just to be sure keyboard is not defective.

To be honest some kind of solution that can ?fix? two keyboard keys is not known to me.

Answer:Portege A600-13T - webcam stopped work

Hi

Error code 10 means that the device could not be started.
This can be related to driver (software) problem as well as hardware problem.

Let?s see if its an software issue: to check this I would recommend you to uninstall the Chicony webcam software firstly.
As far as I know you should be able to uninstall the software in control panel ? programs & features.
In case the Chicony webcam software will not be listed there, go to device manager and uninstall the webcam driver which you should find under ?Imaging devices?.

After system reboot, go to Toshiba EU driver page and download the Chicony webcam software in order to perform new installation.
Probably you will need to reboot the notebook once again to get it working properly.

So lets hope this short procedure would solve your issue? of course only if the issue is related to software problem.

Hello,

I have a Portege A600-133 laptop.
First it is slow with opening the My Computer screen.

Second: after ejecting a dvd or cd disc , Windows still shows the contents of the disc, system hangs for a while, a USB disconnect sound can be heard and the dvd drive disappears from Windows (in My Computer / Explorer / Device Manager)

What can this be?

I did already the high/low filters trick in the registry, but that did not solve the problem....
I opened the laptop and checked the cabling to the dvd drive, cleaned the contacts, pressed the connectors.

But the problem is still there...
OS = Windows XP SP3

Regards,

Arjan

Answer:Portege A600-133: DVD drive disappears from My Computer

Hi

My first idea was to remove the upper and lower filters from the registry key but it seems you have already did this?.

Nevertheless here is a MS knowledge article about mentioned upper and lower filters.
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/270008/en-us

Hmm? usually if the device is not present in the device manager then this means that the device is not connected or it is dead?

You should check if the ODD (optical disk drive) is recognized in BIOS.
You should also check if it?s possible to boot from the bootable CD.

If this is not possible then this could mean that your ODD malfunctions?

Hi !

Can you please tell where can I get service manual for Portege A600 PPA60A? If it is not possible then how can I change HDD?

Thanks !

Answer:service manaul for Portege A600 PPA60A

If there is no HDD Cover or HDD Door, then the Top cover or Base Cover will need removing.

Why are you changing the HDD? Are you installing a higher capacity drive?

I assume the laptop is under Warranty, so you should get an ASP (Authorized Service Provider) to do it for you so the warranty is not voided. I believe there is a list of ASP's on the Toshiba.com.au website, in the support section.

Hello,

My Toshiba Portege A600-138 with Vista Business 32 does not see workgroup computers.
Computers in our office are all equipped with Windows XP.

When I connect my notebook to Local Area Network, I do not see any neighboring computers in Network Explorer.
I spent 1 hour and 40 minutes talking to a Microsoft Support Service specialist, and the only way to get access to local computers we found was to enter a computer's IP directly into the Computer Explorer path field.

I hope you understand what I mean.

The man said that there was no such problem with non-OEM versions of Windows Vista.
He meant the problem was with oem-versions of Vista preinstalled on notebooks only.
He said that probably vendors - in my particular case Toshiba - supplied their notebooks with oem VIsta images that were somehow corrupt.

Does anybody have any idea of the cause of this problem?

Answer:Portege A600-138 with Vista 32bit does not see Win XP workgroup computers

> The man said that there was no such problem with non-OEM versions of Windows Vista.
> He meant the problem was with oem-versions of Vista preinstalled on notebooks only.

That?s nonsense for me?
The Toshiba preinstalled Vista OS is that same OS like full Vista from Microsoft disk.
There is only one difference; the Toshiba notebooks are preinstalled with Toshiba tools and drivers and such drivers and tools are a part of the Toshiba recovery image which contains Vista, driver and tools?

Check this:
http://www.computerworld.com/s/article/9019179/Teach_XP_and_Vista_to_play_nice_on_networks?taxono myId=16&pageNumber=1

There you will find info that a problem has to do with the new Windows Vista network map.
Windows Vista uses a new protocol (Link Layer Topology Discovery.)
LLTD is built into Windows Vista which is why they show up properly on the network map.
But the problem is that LLTD isn't built into Windows XP, which is why they don't show up properly.

But you can fix the problem by downloading and installing the Layer Topology Discovery Responder.
Install it and your Windows XP PC will show up on the network map.

Hi,

Could you tell me if it is possible to output to dual screens on the R600 or A600 with any of the Toshiba docking solutions?

I have been told it is possible however I was told today by Tosh sales that it is not possible to do. I'd like to do away with my home pc and office pc and just roam between the two with a notebook. However I do use an extended desktop on two screens and would need this to work.

Any advice on this?

Not sure if you mean two screens plus the laptop screen or two including the laptop, but If it's any help, I use a Slim Port Replicator with my R500 running Vista and have a second monitor plugged into its DVI output. The two screens work fine as an extended desktop.

I also find it useful to install Ultramon (http://www.realtimesoft.com/ultramon/). This adds a task bar to the second monitor.

All is fine except the inbuilt camera does not work and there is an unknown PCI Simple Communications controller listed in device manage. Undoubtedly the two are linked.

Hi,
I am recently encountering problem with my portege a600-128. No wireless network adapters shown, an thus no wifi detection, moreover when using headphones, the realtek HD audio software detects them being plugged-in, but no sound is produced - i was wondering if this last one is a problem due to software or maybe a hardware damage..

Re: wifi, I tried downloading the realtek_wlan_20100225.zip driver from the site, but nothing changed. Actually, the only adapter shown in the device manager is the toshiba f3507g mobile broadband adapter, and in network connections i can only see that one. Trying to "scan for hardware changes" in the device manager only managed the laptop to realise that my alps pointing device (the touchpad) isn't installed (though it always worked, and still does) - trying to install the tpdrv-20081103180427.ZIP didn't change anything..

thanks for any help!

Furthermore I would recommend loading the default settings in BIOS.

Regarding your sound issue, have you tried updating the sound driver?

Answer:Portege A600 - Missing temperature probes in Everest and overheat

Hi

I don?t believe such 3rd party tools but if your notebook is overheating and shuts down you should clean it using compressed air spray. This could blow out the dust from the cooling ventilators.

Make also sure that you are using the newest BIOS version. You can download it on the Toshiba website.

Good luck! :)

My toshiba laptop came with absolutely no discs whatsoever, is this normal?

The wifi can find networks but when i try to connect i get a message saying invalid network key (or soemthing like that) een when i've put the correct password in multiple times.

And lastly, when i start up the laptop my left click on both the button and touchpad will only right click the desktop, but then when a window is opened and i "left click" it acts as if the windos is in the background.

I found what i believe is the latest driver to the touchpad, installed it, all works except the right click doesn't work whatsoever.

When i restart my laptop it reverts back to the old touchpad drivers and so i have to reinstall the driver via keyboard.

Yes, it?s normal.
I assume you didn?t read the user manual because there you can find the reason for that.

Regarding your issues it?s hard to say why this happen but I still assume that you are try to put in the wrong password. Please check this again or use another password.

And have you tested an external mouse? Does the same happen?

I have a problem with the Toshiba XP Factory build for the Portege A600 and Portege R600.
If you try to modify the sound properties for the Webcam using the Camera Assistant Software with the sound muted, the Camera Assistant application will hang & Windows is unable to close it or even shut down. The only way to shut down is to hold down the power button until the machine switches off.

So far, the only workaround I can come up with is to turn the volume down to zero rather than using the mute option. The trouble is, if you forget and mute the sound rather than turning it down and then try to modify the sound properties, its 'game over'. Also, this isn't really satisfactory as the policy is to keep the machines muted until the sound is needed.

It doesn't happen with the Vista Build, only the XP Build.

My guess is that this will happen on any machine using the Chicony Webcam & software with the Realtek HD audio but I haven't tried it on enough machines yet to be sure. So far, I have recreated it on two A600s and an R600. The machines are not faulty and you can create the problem, 'straight out of the box'. Just do the following:
1) Use the Toshiba supplied Product Recovery DVD to restore the Toshiba Windows XP SP2 factory build
2) Once you have done all the set up stuff, mute the sound
3) Open up the Camera Assistant Software application & select the properties
4) Choose the audio settings tab

That's it, the application has hung. The version of t... Read more

Hi

I don?t have a Portege but U400 with integrated webcam and preinstalled Win XP.
I installed a clean Win XP and then updated the XP to the latest state and installed all possible and available drivers from the Toshiba page.

I followed the steps described in your message and I have to say that I didn?t notice any strange issues? the webcam software is still running properly?

I don?t know what the problem could be but I recommend checking the sound driver fro update? maybe you could use the one from the Realtek page?
Furthermore check if the BIOS has been updated to the latest state and if your Win XP is up to date?.

I have a question concerning a bios flash. I have an HP motherboard, an asus A7N8X-LA that I would like normal bios options for. I would like to know if it is possible to flash to the asus A7N8X, and if I did and it went wrong would I be able to flash back to the HP bios which I have on floppy?
I know it is risky, but if it works I'd be loving life. I won't attempt it at all if you guys think it might make it impossible to flash back to the HP one if it goes wrong. Has anybody ever had a flash go wrong? Were you able to flash from the backup? Thanks in advance.

Hi!

I have a Portege 3440CT with bios version 1.50.

This version does not support large HDD so I thought I'd update the BIOS. (don't know if version 1.60 does either, does anyone know?)

When I try to run the bios-update-program on win2000, it says "Initial error", anyone know what's causing this?

BIOS is downloaded from Toshibas website.

I have no floppy or CD-rom available.
Have tried the updater on win98, and also in DOS and it says "this utility not available on v86 mode!"

Is there any way to place the BIOS file on a small hard drive, and boot from that?

Ideas, anyone?

Answer:Bios update on Portege 3440CT.

Sorry CyB but I really do not understand you. If you check Toshiba support page you will find two BIOS updates. Both of them must be done using FDD. So now I am asking myself why you try to do it under running operating system. Sorry but it is really ridiculous.

Toshiba provide two different BIOS updates. One is TRAD (must be done with FDD) and WIN (can be done under running WXP or now Vista). For old notebook models there is no WIN version.

Is there any way to place the BIOS file on a small hard drive, and boot from that?

As far as I know something like this is not possible and you can check eBay and obtain FDD. You can get it for few bucks. It is really not expensive.

Hello.

I have a Portege Z835, with a battery problem: don't charge. The battery indicator says "3% connected and charging" but it don't charging the battery.

Some forums says that the solution is updating the Bios. I have a Bios update v.1.60 ready for install. When I try to install, we get the message "the battery power is not enough".

My power cord is always connected. If I disconnect the power cord, laptop is off.

Please, what can I do?

Thanks.

Answer:Portege Z835 - need help with BIOS update

To be honest I don?t think it is BIOS related issue. As far as I know battery should be charged even if the notebook is OFF so why BIOS update if battery cannot be charged at all.

For me it sounds like hardware related issue.

How old is your Portege?
Is warranty still valid?

Maybe you should contact Toshiba service and ask for help or even their opinion.

Hi

It seems that Vista OS was preinstalled on this notebook.
This means that you have installed the Win 7 system at your own hand.

The point is that BIOS update requires some essential Toshiba tools.
For example the Value Added Package is important software and should be preinstalled on the notebook.

Is VAP installed?
If not install the VAP before trying to update the BIOS.

Hi there,
When I look for an update to the BIOS in my M400 at the Nordics version of Toshibas homepage http://nordic.computers.toshiba-europe.com - here is what I find;
On the nordics toshiba website they have the 1.50 version available for download, while the US version website I can download the newer 1.60 version. As my M400 is a Danish version I am a little unsure as to if it's ok to update my BIOS to v1.60 now that the nordics toshiba website don't have that BIOS version available.

Any thoughts and views about going ahead and installing the version 1.60 on my DK-version M400 is very welcomed.

Folks,

I have been wrestling with this device for a while now and I seem to be progressively making the situation worse.

My current issue is that I can no longer access the BIOS after changing a setting in the BIOS that related to USB emulation (or something like that). I was in the process of trying to make the device boot from a USB and pretty much twiddling with every setting to see what would work.

This one didn't. And now the device no longer responds to F2. It's like it is ignoring the keyboard. Doh!

Is there some way to roll back or re-flash the BIOS? Or another way to access it? I tried an external keyboard, to no avail.

How did I get here?

Well ... I was given this device to put back to factory condition and I could not find an obvious option that would do this, other than the Toshiba Maintenance Utility which looked hopeful. It offered to erase the partition (which at the time seemed fair enough) - BUT THAT"S all it did - so the machine just repeatedly boots, displays "Please insert system disk" and then reboots.

OK, I'm an idiot - but it does seem silly for Toshiba to offer an option that instantly bricks the machine?

Anyway, I've moved on from that problem to one that is significantly more dire. Not being able to access the BIOS means I don't have any options - unless one of you wonderful people can help me discover one.

I have since discovered that the next setting I was going to adjust - the Secure Boot setting - may have solved... Read more

Is there a way to silently upgrade the BIOS ?

Hi,

You can download another version of the same bios-update here :

This file contains more information about performing the update, see the readme-file
you can either do a direct update within XP or make a bootable diskette or a bootable CD

If the "direct update" within XP won't work, you will need at least an USB-fdd-drive, most of them are recognized easily by the bios ( hold F12 during start-up and choose fdd )

Has anyone tried this new update ?
I was put off by the wording on the disclaimer.
It seems that in order to cut down on constant fan use the price to pay will be a hotter computer.
Is that going to affect the computer life time ?
Also, as it is a "stand alone" update, is it possible to undo the changes and revert to a previous version if necessary ?
Finally, is the increased heat on the base of the unit going to make it uncomfortable to work with as a tablet ?

Hi

Yes I have updated my m400 to version 1.8 and No it does not run that hot im currently suing speed fan to monitor the temp and its stable at 38 degrees - with BIOS set to cooling - battery optimised, its very quite now! thats what i wanted as the fan for me was just to loud for such a small laptop. I went from 1.4 straight to 1.8 didnt do 1.7.
I still find however the power saver dosent do much in terms of the fan speed, but at least we know there was an issue and they have identified it in the BIOS release.

I understand that upgrading the BIOS can help getting the VAP installed ( I get the ID ERR NOTINSTALLTVALZ message), I know that Toshiba are not directly supporting the A100 for Vista but is there a BIOS I can install that will work? I'm thinking there might be a similar machine that works in Vista or maybe just an A100 BIOS that will suffice?

I didn?t find this Value Added Package on the Toshiba Europe site.

Regarding the BIOS;
You should know that the BIOS update is always risky.
If you will use wrong BIOS version or wrong BIOS update procedure you can damage the motherboard!!!

It?s not worth to trying something which can damage the notebook. You know?

The second one: I cannot install Windows XP on to notebook (it does not boot neither FDD-USB, nor External DVD-USB).

Answer:Portege 3410 - How to update BIOS and install XP?

Hi

Just one question: Why do you want to update the BIOS? Is it really necessary?
I ask this because this update is always a little bit risky and you could damage the ROM module.
Anyway, have you tried to load default settings in BIOS before you start the update and install XP?

You can install XP without CD. Therefore you must copy the i386 folder on the HDD from another computer and some booting files for HDD? I think you should search a little bit with Google to find workaround for this. You should find enough! ;)

Answer:Re: Portege R500 - How to update BIOS on Windows 7?

Hi Roro,

Yes you have to install Windows XP to update the BIOS but my question is: Is this update necessary or just for fun? BIOS update is always a little bit risky and should only be done to solve problems. If your computer runs properly I wouldn?t make this update.

I don?t know if this update is possible on Virtual XP but I wouldn?t try it. If the update fails you need a new ROM module or mainboard. I think the BIOS update isn?t designed for Virtualization mode?

It could be possible that you cannot update the BIOS because of the missing or disabled TVALZ services.

Go to Control panel -> Administrative Tools icon and click services.

Here you can check if the TVALZ service is available ? if its available, enable it and then try to update the BIOS.

If this will not work, you will need to recover the notebook using Recovery HDD or Recovery disk? The BIOS update should functions using the Toshiba factory settings

Current BIOS version: Ver.1.50

So my question is... WHATS WRONG?? What a product type? This BIOS update is OS independent and language independent (world wide), so i think many people with M700 will have the same problem. Is it some problems with previous version of BIOS? which I downloaded from the same site month ago. I dont understand, the BIOS installer for Windows was made to make the process easy, but it does not even work...

Answer:Portege M700 - 116 BIOS Update Error

Hi

I see you are using the Vista Ultimate.
I doubt this is an original preinstalled Vista version.

The error message: Unsupported product type is installed says that the product (software OS) which is preinstalled is not supported by BIOS. I think the error is related to the preinstalled Vista Ultimate. Possibly the BIOS cannot be updated running Vista Ultimate.

SO it would be very interesting to know if you can update the BIOS running Toshiba preinstalled OS.
Should check this!

Out of curiosity but do you use original preinstalled OS that you got with your Portege?

Is somebody out there have the proper procedure to update the bios of a Portege 7200CT without the docking station.

Toshiba has posted a procedure in its bulletin but it does not explain how to do the update without the docking station. As everybody knows that the Portege 7200CT has its floppy drive on the docking station and if we follow the Toshiba updating procedure we have to undock the laptop, so how can we proceed with the update if the update software calls for a floppy drive that is on default to drive A:

Hope somebody out there have something to share!!!

Hello Forum,

i have exactly the same problem as described here, 2 years ago:
http://forums.computers.toshiba-europe.com/forums/thread.jspa?threadID=65519

I need to update my BIOS, but i cant because the BIOS Updater tells me that Intel-TXT is enabled.
Unfortunatelly i cant disable it in my bios. Its just not selectable. The "cursor" just jumps over it.
I can only "Hide" it which doesnt help.
I have the same for the VT-d and VT-x setting in the BIOS. This is not selectable or changeable as well.

TPM isnt enabled though...
I installed the infineon suite and it tells me that i need to enable TPM in bios to use it. :-(

I have an very old Bios Version 3.1 and i read in the changelog that in V3.4 and 3.5 there were many TPM related changes....

Anyway....
Back then, a user named Paolo30 uploaded a file P007Dv360A_EC77V140.zip to 2shared.com which fixed this.
Unfortunatelly this file was deleted on 2shared.com

can someone please provide that file (or a later bios update) which fixes this?
Thanks in advance.

You can download such older BIOS versions from different Toshiba driver pages.
For example: http://www.toshiba-asia.com/sg/support/drivers

On this Toshiba Asia page I could find all BIOS for this Portege model.

Hi there.

I manage an IT company, and some of our equipments are portege z930.

We use Linux as the main OS, and in order to use all HDD space, we've erased Windows partition.

How can I update BIOS from a Linux operative system? I asked in an official technichal support company, and they told me they use an special linux live CD handled by Toshiba.

I don't know if I can get this live cd somehow. If not, I'd like to know how to update our Bios without having to reinstall Windows OS.

Thanks in advance!

Answer:Portege Z930: How to update BIOS having LINUX/UNIX OS

As far as I know on BIOS download page Toshiba offers Windows version only. Generally speaking Linux is not supported at all.
Try to contact nearest Toshiba service provider and ask for help. Maybe they can obtain such special CD.

By the way: why you didn?t prepared machine (BIOS update) before you have started to install Linux?

Hhi

please help me with my portege M400, I installed a new localized version of Windows XP , then I started to download the drivers from Toshiba website, and the first thing I did is installing the new BIOS update. I don't know which version was it. Then it asked me for restart, after I did the restart the device doesn't boot anymore, and I can see only a blinking orange LED, :(

Please how can I reset my old BIOS? Is it the end of my Toshiba?
I'm now in a forign country and there are noToshiba service center near to me

Please is there anyway to help me

Answer:Portege M400 - doesn't start after a BIOS update

Hi!

I think in this case you must go to an ASP. I don?t see another solution for this problem because I think the ROM module must be reflashed or the completely mainboard must be replaced.

On the Toshiba website you can search for the nearest ASP:
http://eu.computers.toshiba-europe.com => Support & Downloads => Find an authorized service provider

And if you don?t find an ASP in your country just contact an ASP in another country. I?m sure that they will try to help you.

So, I download the bios (v3.60) from the site and run the .exe, but it tells me I need the common modules.

The only common modules I can find on the Tosh site are for XP.

Can anyone help?

Probably you have to update the BIOS before you will install the Vista on the notebook.

Hi,

how can I update my BIOS when using Ubuntu Linux?

The reason why I'd like to update my BIOS is that on the one hand Ubuntu
writes an error message during boot-up and recommends to upgrade it and on
the other hand I'm afraid that there is maybe a temperature problem, at least the
notebook becomes slower after working for a while.

The notebook operating temperature usually is between 45-64 degrees.
The fan turns on at 62 degrees and turns off at 52 degrees.

Temperature seems to be pretty normal I would say but I think its not normal that the
notebook becomes slower when operating above 50 degrees.

I already opened it, it seems to be all right with the cooling unit, no dirt e.g...

Maybe I just persuade myself I and the performance is completely normal for a PIII with
866MHz??

Thank you

Answer:Portege 2010 BIOS update / operating temperature

Dear Julio

I presume you know that Linux is not supported OS and designed BIOS update is created to be performed in running Windows OS. This nice Portege is known to me and I know very well that it is not the fastest notebook and it is designed for business purposes like working with Office, e-mail communication and every other everyday activity.

Because of that answer to your latest question can be: yes you persuade yourself.

Hi

How did you try to upgrade the BIOS? From the Windows or did you use the traditional procedure?
According to this document you should use the traditional BIOS upgrade procedure.

Did you have some serious problems which the BIOS upgrade can solve?
Please note that you should upgrade the BIOS only if you have serious problems and if you know that the BIOS upgrade will solve the problems.

I recently updated the BIOS on my z30c pt263e as per advice from the toshiba update application installed on my PC.

Since that update, my LAN (wireless) and bluetooth have been behaving abnormally, including:
Connecting to various wireless networks, but not being able to access the internet. In order to do so, I have to do a wireless troubleshoot in windows, which resets the wifi adapter, then it works againIf I switch between networks (say a wireless, to a hotspot wireless on my phone) it does the same thing. Will connect to the network, but not access the internet, necessitating the same resetBluetooth has started to work abnormally at the same time, including saying my bluetooth keyboard is paired, but it won't recognise any input from my keyboard.

I've since downloaded and reinstalled both the LAN and Bluetooth drivers from the Toshiba website. This has NOT fixed the problem.

If toshiba is not aware or not going to do anything about this, can someone please post a link to the previous BIOS version (which isn't available when I search on the EU support site) so I can at least verify if it was the BIOS update causing the problem

Hi,

I downloaded and extracted the pkg and tried to install via Windows but it says my OS isn't supported. I don't have an external CD drive or FDD - how can I update the BIOS? I tried to put it on a USB drive but there doesn't seem to be an option to boot from USB.

Thanks!

And I see it doesn't recognize the video card either - just uses Standard VGA Graphics Adapter which seems to work fine...

I have a Portege R500 model PPR50E with Vista Business pre-installed. I am wanting to move to Windows 7 and so, as a first step I want to update the BIOS from 1.5 to 1.6. I obtained the correct file from Toshiba (bios-20080325071859 containing P0058v160.exe), but when I try to run the application it fails with "This computer is not supported".
I have checked several times that I downloaded the file for the R500....

Can anyone help?

Answer:Cannot make BIOS update for Portege R500 (PPR50E)

Hi

That?s strange.
Did you change something on you installed Vista?

In different cases the BIOS cannot be updated because some essential tools like common modules for Win XP has not been installed.
If you are using vista you don?t need Common Modules but I recommend reinstalling VAP.
Then you should try to run BIOS update again.

Otherwise use the recovery disk and set the notebook back to factory settings.
After the notebook has been set to the same state like at the first day of purchase, you could run BIOS update.

I'm having problems with my R500, so thought I would update the BIOS.

I am directed to download bios-200803250781.zip

This contains the file P0058v160.exe

Starting that process leads to:

"install2 has encountered a problem and needs to close"

Do these BIOSes have to be installed incrementally? My r500 is an early one and currently running v1.00.

Answer:Re: Portege R500 - Bios update installer crashes

Hi

If you want to update the BIOS then you have to download the BIOS package and have to unzip it firstly.
Then execute the exe stored in the folder.

I?m not sure why the error message appears but please ensure that the Common Modules are installed on your system.

If the error will still persists then this could be a problem with the installed Windows OS and not with the BIOS software.

Hello

I have an old M800-106 (model PPM81E-00K00JEN). It is good condition and has been reliable, and I don't want to scrap it. Unfortunately the Windows based BIOS update from Toshiba's website froze during it's operation, and now the laptop won't restart.

The cost of sending it to an authorised service provider to repair is significantly more than the cost of replacing the laptop, and I'd be charged even if they didn't fix it. I'm not saying it's expensive - if someone has skills and does some work they should be paid for it, but it's not what I want to spend money on for this laptop.

Environmentally it'd bad to just chuck the laptop away/take to the recycling centre.

I could strip the motherboard out and send that away to have the BIOS chip replaced or reprogrammed, but that would be time consuming and risk me damaging it.

I would like to attempt to flash the BIOS chip, using the crisis Phoenix tools that are available online, but so far haven't found a *.rom or *.wph file to use.

Where can I get the BIOS file - to be honest any version that suits this laptop would do, it doesn't need to be the most recent one.

Any helpful advice gratefully received.

Matthew

Answer:Portege 3500: system32 file missing - BIOS update?

Hi

I can?t believe that and virus can damage the BIOS!!!
I think you have updated the BIOS with the wrong procedure!!!
Did you check the document how to update the BIOS?

Anyway, the system32 fault has nothing to do with BIOS and I don?t understand why you started the BIOS update.

The Portege 3500 does not support an internal drive and therefore if you want to install the OS you have to use a compatible external PC-card drive.
I assume you use such drive for booting.

If some error messages appear during the installation procedure, you should firstly format the whole HDD and delete all partitions and then try again to boot from the recovery CD!

Hi,

The issue I am having is that I need to reinstall Windows, but the CD ROm cant read discs.
It does Network Booting PXE, but i'm new to this sort of thing and have absolutly no idea what to do there.

Any help would be great,

Answer:Portege A100 PPA10A - Will BIOS update allow to boot from a USB device

Hi

Portege A100 seems to be developed only for Australian market.
As you said there is a Portege A100 PPA10A-0002L model number listed on the Toshiba Australian page but the Portege A100 PPA10A-0002LP belongs to the same series which is PPA10A.
So in my opinion the BIOS should work too.

Anyway, I doubt that the BIOS update will add any further booting options.

Usually the BIOS support the booting from CD/DVD drive, HDD, LAN and USB FDD.
It should be possible to boot from a bootable diskette using an USB FDD drive.
I doubt you would be able to boot from USB ODD since this Portege A100 supports an internal CD/DVD drive.

The BIOS update should not take a long time.

In your case is it possible that something went wrong during the flashing process and the ROM module has not been flashed properly.
I think you are in trouble and in my opinion only the ASP technician would be able to help you.

The BIOS ROM must be flashed again using an crisis procedure and this can be done only by an ASP technician.

OS: Windows 10 LTSB

I tried to install the new BIOS from the drivers page on toshiba.eu.
That BIOS sadly does not work ...? Why?

Anyway... the problem i had and i wanted to have fixed is:

Bitlocker encrypted my whole drive.
it starts correctly and displays the keyboard.
GPO: Keyboard Slates (or something like that) is activated.
BUT: Touchscreen does not work. That means.. i can see the keyboard but it does not work.
thats why i wanted to update my bios but it says it is not working on my computer... well thats frustrating...
why offer the bios update when it does not work at all... or is it some sort of windows 7 only? cant imagine that tbh.

i guess the only problem is the bios but i could be wrong (z20t-b works on same settings for example)

Bios and EC should be updated

During the BIOS update seems following message:

+An error occurred while preparing the update environment. You have not given permission to execute the update.+

My settings:
