New Bios for Portege Z30-A Changelog

Question: New Bios for Portege Z30-A Changelog

has anyone tested the new bios (4.20-WIN(ECB1.40)) for the Toshiba Portege Z30-A or is there an official change log?
Did toshiba change the fan-behaviour? The fan is not loud/annoying, but it could kick in a little bit later.

Preferred Solution: New Bios for Portege Z30-A Changelog

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Could Toshiba post a changelog of their BIOS versions?
Since I bought my unit almost a year ago, I updated it every single time and haven't found any improvements.

Hopefully this can be useful?

- is there a place where i can find the changelog from bios version 1.80 to 3.80? should i upgrade?
- have you any expereience in changing the fan? mine does make sounds that dont belong there....
- how long in your experience can it take to get an answer from toshiba support via email? im waiting 3 days now... :(

Answer:Portege M400 - Where to find changelog of Bios 3.80

If you can?t find a changelog for the BIOS update on the Toshiba website there is no available.

You can change the fan but do you have experience with this? To exchange the fan you must remove a lot of parts and screws. This is a little bit tricky and should only be done from a notebook technician.

I did not send an email to Toshiba as yet but I think you will get an answer as fast as possible.

Just a simple question, is there any official page with BIOS changelog? I tried to look for it, but found nothing.

Thank you

Answer:Qosmio F - Is there a BIOS changelog?

I think there isn?t an official Toshiba page about the changelog for BIOS updates.
If you can?t find the changelog on the download page (if you download the BIOS) there isn?t a changelog available.

But why do you want a changelog? BIOS update is only necessary if you have problems with your notebook. Otherwise the BIOS must not be updated and I recommended never touch a running system!!! ;)

Hello, I am looking for a more detailed BIOS changelog for the M93ps we mainly use at our company. Not necessarily as detailed as this post: , but certainly more verbose than the recent "[Important] Update includes security fixes." for the last 5 updates ( ) - especially in the light of the recentish bothering news about dataleaks connected to Lenovo software included with workstations (and mobiles)! Is such a list available somewhere or can anybody shed some light on what exactly have been updated in these 5 recent revisions (and maybe how the problem was solved)? Thanks, Istvan

A link or any info would be much appreciated ..

Can you see a BIOS changelog file on the Toshiba page where you can download the BIOS update?
No? Then the case is clear: There is no BIOS changelog file available.

Don?t understand me wrong but that?s fact?

And let me give you a word of advice: Everything ok with your notebook? No problems at all? Then forget the BIOS update.

Never touch a running system! ;)

Answer:BIOS versions changelog for u400

Haven't found anything on the emea BIOS page of Toshiba, only on the us ones, but as this are different models I'm not sure if these changes apply for european notebooks.

Don't know why this is not included in the BIOS package, too.

I have a Toshiba M400 and i was wondering how i could reset the bios password. I disabled the finger print scanner recently becuase i decided i dont need it anymore but it still asks for a bios password which i forgot. I used to just swipe my finger and it would let me boot up and all that gravey.

If you guys know how to reset the password. Either physically or through software that would be awesome.

Or if you guys know who is the bios manufacturer for Portege M400's I could probebly give them a call and ask my self.

I could send it in but I want to avoid that and leave it as a last option.

BTW this laptop was purchased in USA.

Answer:Reset BIOS password on Portege M400 - Bios Manufacturer?

You will be not able to remove the BIOS password yourself if you have forgotten it.
As far as I know the manufacture of the BIOS which was preinstalled on Port?g? M400 is......... Toshiba ;)

So you have to contact the authorized Toshiba service provider in your country and only these guys are able to remove the BIOS password which you have forgotten.

Running Ubuntu Linux on the M400 and it seems almost all BIOS versions prior 3.60 are broken because there are APIC quirk errors on the CPU. Maybe Microsoft could work around the broken APIC tables for a while but with Linux things are a bit cumbersome. Microsoft asked Toshiba for a BIOS update to deal with these issues and starting from 3.50 it seems to be fixed.

see here

Even in Linux no more APIC errors are seen. :-) But after updating to 3.60 BIOS the boot screen stays active and is preventing me to select an option for a multi boot entry (grub). When the OS is already starting the boot screen turns white at first and then gives finally control to the OS. Are others seeing this as well?

I am able to select something in my boot menu but it's more guessing because the boot screen is still on top. Very annoying this :-(

Another issue I have is that sometimes the system freezes for a couple of seconds and then goes on, nothing to be seen in logs when using Ubuntu or WXP tablet. So could be a bug in BIOS once again. Again looking for confirmation, are other experiencing this as well.

Did reflash 3.60 a couple of times but seeing this behaviour over and over again.

Although there seems to be some fan control in 3.60. It doesn't fire like a DC9 but still not as silent as the 1.80W or 2.10N BIOS versions were. Love to see these fan noise changes incorporated in 3.60 and later?

Answer:Portege M400 and 3.60 BIOS

Hi Robert

I know you will hate me but the fact is that Portege M400 has sticker near the keyboard and there is written something like ?Designed for Microsoft ??. With short words: Linux OS is not supported.

If you need some help with Linux on Toshiba notebooks please check

Issue about freezing is very strange and if you want to check it properly install recovery image without any additional software. In this case you will have ?factory settings? and clean preinstalled OS. If you will notice some exceptional issues you should contact authorized service partner and clarify this.

Good luck!

Hello everyone,

I upgraded the BIOS on my Z30-B-119 laptop, and it is much worst than the original BIOS so I would like to downgrade it.
There was no way to save the original BIOS when updating and the previous BIOS is not available on the website.

Do anyone have the original BIOS and knows how to extract it?

Or maybe someone knows how to contact Toshiba technical team directly? (Seeing what they implemented in new BIOS, I have no hopes they read this forum or care about user opinions.)

If you wonder why I want to downgrade and what is wrong with it, see below for explanation.

I was convinced that the new BIOS would fix the problem with the fan, which switched on way too early, but it turned out they made it much worst! Now the fan switches on at 42?. Before it was 50?, which was already a stupid choice of Toshiba engineers, providing that the temperature rating of this CPU is 105? so they could keep the laptop quiet at least up to 60?, especially that many people complain about the fan in this model. Instead, Toshiba did the opposite and lowered the temperature even more.

Seeing how senseless choices their engineers make, I will never buy another Toshiba and will not recommend anyone buying their products. But since I already made the mistake an bought a Toshiba laptop, I hope I will be able to downgrade the BIOS or contact them to ask for an update.

Let me know if you know how to do it.

Hi All,

I have a Toshiba Portege R830, running 32-bit Windows 7 (SP1) enterprise (for work).
I also boot into Linux Mint 14 64-bit, which I have installed on a portable USB HDD (outside work).

I recently bought a USB 3 HDD, but when I connect it to the USB 3 port on my R830, it only gives me USB 2 speeds (25 MB/s).

I checked with some diagnostic utilities (usbdeview, etc), which say that the drive is connected in USB 2.1 mode.

The drive reports itself as being USB 3, the cable is USB 3 (SuperSpeed), and the port I'm using on the R830 is 3.

I experience the same, whether I boot into windows or linux.

I updated all drivers on both OSs, to no avail.

next i tried to update the BIOS, but I keep getting the following error:
"An error occurred while preparing the update environment.
You have not given permission to execute the update."

For the record, this is the BIOS I'm going from, & to.
BIOS Version : Current Ver.2.80 --> Updated Ver.4.10
EC Version : Current Ver.1.10 --> Updated Ver.1.60

Does anyone know why I would not be getting USB 3 speeds (which, for my drive, are expected to be around 40 to 50 MB/s), or why all diagnostics are saying USB 2?

Does anyone know how to overcome the BIOS update issue?
(I've tried safe mode, disabling AV, disabling NX)

Please try to install it and check USB speed again.

So many questions and most of them should be answered by technicians. I really think you need professional help. I recommend you to call nearest Toshiba service provider and ask for help.
To be honest I don?t think you will be able to order this chip anywhere. Talk with service.

You can download another version of the same bios-update here : PR10U

This file contains more information about performing the update, see the readme-file
you can either do a direct update within XP or make a bootable diskette or a bootable CD

If the "direct update" within XP won't work, you will need at least an USB-fdd-drive, most of them are recognized easily by the bios ( hold F12 during start-up and choose fdd )

You should try this at first: Remove the battery and AC/DC adaptor, wait up to one hour and then connect the battery and the AC/DC adaptor. Now you can try it again.

In worst case the mainboard must be replaced. For this you can go to an authorized service provider.

BIOS should be updated.

i do not have a floppy drive on my machine, only usb ports and a sd card slot. How can i upgrade the bios?

Answer:Portege 4000 bios upgrade

The easiest way is to create a dos boot cd-rom. There are several descriptions on the web. Google for it.
Add the extracted Toshiba bios files, ec29nobb.bin, chgbiosa.exe and chgfirma.exe to the CD-rom.

At first boot from the cd and run 'chgfirma ec29nobb.bin'.
Now the ECKBC-Firmware is written (don't power off during flash!!!)
Than boot again from cd and run 'chgbiosa'.
This flashes the Bios.
Both flash are necessary!

Here is how to extract the Toshiba bios file.
At first you have to extract the R211VOL2.exe file. Easiest way to do so is to use 'universal extractor' -- google for it.
After this you will get the file R211VOL2.IMA. This is a floppy image file.
You can extract the single files in the archiv using winimage (trial version should work).

Good luck!

Hi there,

I have been wrestling with this device for a while now and I seem to be progressively making the situation worse.

My current issue is that I can no longer access the BIOS after changing a setting in the BIOS that related to USB emulation (or something like that). I was in the process of trying to make the device boot from a USB and pretty much twiddling with every setting to see what would work.

This one didn't. And now the device no longer responds to F2. It's like it is ignoring the keyboard. Doh!

Is there some way to roll back or re-flash the BIOS? Or another way to access it? I tried an external keyboard, to no avail.

How did I get here?

Well ... I was given this device to put back to factory condition and I could not find an obvious option that would do this, other than the Toshiba Maintenance Utility which looked hopeful. It offered to erase the partition (which at the time seemed fair enough) - BUT THAT"S all it did - so the machine just repeatedly boots, displays "Please insert system disk" and then reboots.

OK, I'm an idiot - but it does seem silly for Toshiba to offer an option that instantly bricks the machine?

Anyway, I've moved on from that problem to one that is significantly more dire. Not being able to access the BIOS means I don't have any options - unless one of you wonderful people can help me discover one.

I have since discovered that the next setting I was going to adjust - the Secure Boot setting - may have solved... Read more

I have a Portege 3440CT with bios version 1.50.

This version does not support large HDD so I thought I'd update the BIOS. (don't know if version 1.60 does either, does anyone know?)

When I try to run the bios-update-program on win2000, it says "Initial error", anyone know what's causing this?

BIOS is downloaded from Toshibas website.

I have no floppy or CD-rom available.
Have tried the updater on win98, and also in DOS and it says "this utility not available on v86 mode!"

Is there any way to place the BIOS file on a small hard drive, and boot from that?

Ideas, anyone?

Answer:Bios update on Portege 3440CT.

Sorry CyB but I really do not understand you. If you check Toshiba support page you will find two BIOS updates. Both of them must be done using FDD. So now I am asking myself why you try to do it under running operating system. Sorry but it is really ridiculous.

Toshiba provide two different BIOS updates. One is TRAD (must be done with FDD) and WIN (can be done under running WXP or now Vista). For old notebook models there is no WIN version.

Is there any way to place the BIOS file on a small hard drive, and boot from that?

As far as I know something like this is not possible and you can check eBay and obtain FDD. You can get it for few bucks. It is really not expensive.

You should know that not all Intel CPUs supports the Intel VT (virtualization technology)

Therefore sometimes VT option is not available in BIOS!

Anybody know what the update does?
The explanation on the download page just says: +"This Bios Update adds increased functionality to your system."+

Thanks in advance.

The change-log on the US site says:

Version 1.60 - 2008-03-19

i recently purchased two used portege 3490 CT Notebooks, both with BIOS version 1.60. I tried to upgrade to Version 1.90 with a USB-Floppy, but it wont accept the floppies. Theres no floppy access when i press a key after the bios update message.

Also booting from this USB floppy wont work. Is this a problem related to this specific USB floppy drive (it's a NEC)? Are there any other procedures to update the BIOS?

Answer:BIOS Update on a Portege 3490

Hello Thomas

I am not sure but I assume that your unit has no USB legacy support and, as far as I know, you can do it using original Toshiba FDD. Check please your BIOS settings.

I am pretty sure that you will not be able to make BIOS update using your FDD.

I have a Toshiba R100 and am trying to upgrade the BIOS from 1.20 to 1.60. However, I just get "different ROM version" when I run the update.

The model number on the bottom is P2010 - is this slightly different from an R100? If so, where can I obtain a BIOS update?

Answer:Portege R100: Trying to upgrade the BIOS from 1.20 to 1.60

Well, I have found the BIOS version 1.6 from 30.9.05 on the Toshiba driver page.
This version should works properly.
I assume you have tried to upgrade the BIOS with the win-version. Please check this document: IOS&FID=TRO0000000b07

There you will find information how to upgrade the BIOS on the R100. You should use the trad-BIOS version.

I tried to Update the BIOS at my M700-110 PPM70E-02302DEN from 1.60 up to 1.80 (P005Bv180.exe).

However it fails with the error " BIOS Update is not supported OS. Unsupported OS or service pack installed."

Within the "more information" I could read "OS independent".
Is the Windows 7 Home Premium with Service Pack 1 not supported?

What's the matter?
Which BIOS is the right one for my system?

Please help me!
THanks a lot.

Answer:BIOS Update not possible for Portege M700

It seems that Vista OS was preinstalled on this notebook.
This means that you have installed the Win 7 system at your own hand.

The point is that BIOS update requires some essential Toshiba tools.
For example the Value Added Package is important software and should be preinstalled on the notebook.

Is VAP installed?
If not install the VAP before trying to update the BIOS.

I have a Portege Z835, with a battery problem: don't charge. The battery indicator says "3% connected and charging" but it don't charging the battery.

Some forums says that the solution is updating the Bios. I have a Bios update v.1.60 ready for install. When I try to install, we get the message "the battery power is not enough".

My power cord is always connected. If I disconnect the power cord, laptop is off.

Please, what can I do?

Answer:Portege Z835 - need help with BIOS update

To be honest I don?t think it is BIOS related issue. As far as I know battery should be charged even if the notebook is OFF so why BIOS update if battery cannot be charged at all.

For me it sounds like hardware related issue.

How old is your Portege?
Is warranty still valid?

Maybe you should contact Toshiba service and ask for help or even their opinion.

I want to upgrade the BIOS of my Portege R500 but I don't have a Windows installed on it. What can I do ?

Thank you.

Answer:Re: BIOS upgrade for a Portege R500

Firstly; it?s necessary to update the BIOS?
Is something wrong with your notebook?

Secondly; the BIOS which can be found on the Toshiba European driver page can be updated only from running Windows OS.
Therefore you will have to install Windows if you want to update the BIOS.

For that I need the newest bios version v1.70win, but to intall it ,it requires the Common Module. I have instaled it (there was no error, at least) but when I retry to do the update , a"missing common module" message appears. So I'm a little bit confused. I suppose that the best think to do is to erase any previous version of common module, and reintall it, but I have no ideea how should I do it.
can anyone give me clue, or maybe i'm on the wrong path!?

As far as I know it?s not necessary to install a Common Modules if you want to update the BIOS. Nevertheless normally you can find the Common Modules in ?Add and remove programs?. If you need a whole instruction ?how to make a BIOS update? you can find it on the Toshiba website.

Please go to ?Support & Downloads? then ?Knowledge Base?. There you can search for ?BIOS update?.

On the Toshiba European site I didn?t find any descriptions about the BIOS renewals.
But I have visit the US Toshiba site and found some inforamtions.

Visit this site and chose -> Downloads
There chose the Port?g? M400 and go to the driver downloads.
The first one should be BIOS 2.1. If you click on the BIOS 2.1 you will see the whole renewal history.

But I?m not sure if the BIOS from the US site is the same like the one from the European site.

Has anyone tried this new update ?
I was put off by the wording on the disclaimer.
It seems that in order to cut down on constant fan use the price to pay will be a hotter computer.
Is that going to affect the computer life time ?
Also, as it is a "stand alone" update, is it possible to undo the changes and revert to a previous version if necessary ?
Finally, is the increased heat on the base of the unit going to make it uncomfortable to work with as a tablet ?
Thanks for feed back.

Answer:Portege M400. BIOS update V 1.8

Yes I have updated my m400 to version 1.8 and No it does not run that hot im currently suing speed fan to monitor the temp and its stable at 38 degrees - with BIOS set to cooling - battery optimised, its very quite now! thats what i wanted as the fan for me was just to loud for such a small laptop. I went from 1.4 straight to 1.8 didnt do 1.7.
I still find however the power saver dosent do much in terms of the fan speed, but at least we know there was an issue and they have identified it in the BIOS release.

+Implemented a fix for an issue where the BIOS password can't be entered with some USB keyboards.+

+Version 1.40 - 2011-11-15+

I have encountered the fault that crops up on addition of an admin password for the BIOS on my R700. i added the password directly in the BIOS itself as i have re-installed windows onto an SSD and as such dont have any of the bloatware from toshiba installed.

now when i try to access the BIOS on bootup by pressing the Esc key i get a black screen and white message saying press F2 to enter setup. i press F2 and the system reboots and loads to windows, or if i press Esc again same message. it will loop like this forever with no BIOS access. pressing F1 does nothing as does Esc at the press F2 request.

so essentially i'm completely locked out of my own BIOS. i have tried putting the old HDD back in with the toshiba security manager in it but it doesnt find any BIOS password so i cant delete it using that

my next plan was to simply dismantle the computer and remove the CMOS battery and allow the BIOS to reset to defaults......however i know this only works on certain computers not all, so my question is, is this worth a shot??? or if not what can i do to get back into my BIOS??

To access the BIOS you should use and press the ?ESC? button immediately after Portege was power up.

But as I understood you right, you want to boot from the internal CD/DVD drive.

Well, you could also try to press the ?C? button.
This would enable the booting from the ODD.

Furthermore pressing F12 button would allows you to enable the boot menu on the screen.
Then choose the CD/DVD drive to boot from CD .

Answer:How can I enter the BIOS of a Portege M100?

Do you use the Toshiba BIOS or Phoenix BIOS?
I'm not 100% sure but I think it's a Toshiba BIOS... in this case you can use the ESC button to access the BIOS settings.

> I want to increase the graphic performance to the maximum,
I've got bad news for you... the only one, real way to increase the graphic performance is the graphic chip upgrade... BUT this is not possible. The GPU chip is fixes on the board and it's not possible to remove it.

> I'd like to play more games that need directx9c
Well, most of games need the directx9c. You could use the command "dxdiag" to access the DirectX settings and to check the installed version.

By the way; you can download the directx9c from the Microsoft website

Hope there is an easier way to do this.

Answer:BIOS upgrade on Portege 7020CT

Notebook must be in boot mode and not resume mode and you have to remove any PC Cards.

How to make the BIOS update:
Just take a 1.4mb 3 1/2 floppy (nonbootable) and unpack the files to it.
Turn off the machine, turn it back on while holding the F12 key or for
newer machines, the key left of the space bar, and the rest is automatic.

It is best to disconnect all peripherals while doing the update.
Make sure that the machine is not in the LAN Docker. This could erase your EPROM's.

I've got a question from a practical standpoint. I'm taking a class on Excel 2007 at a school now. I've used other Excel versions before.

Microsoft puts new features in every version I've seen so far. Plus, they keep the old ones too. But not everyone always has the newest Excel. Therefore, sometimes to be compatible, you need to save in a different format. When you save in an older Excel format, you've got to use only the features that existed in that version for best compatibillity. Or maybe you just want to design a spreadsheet that is compatible with a certain version.

Well, they've added so many features over the years, that I would like someone ot point out to me, if it exists, a place where I could get some sort of a changelog showing which new features they added to Excel 2007, and continuing with each change they made to each version before releasing the product to the public. I don't care about every little change, just the changes in features.

For example, it would list that in version 2007, they replaced menus with the Ribbon. Now I'm interested in such changelogs for each program in Office too please. Does anybody know if they even exist?

This is a question to the techy guys at Toshiba. Please can someone confirm compatibility with OCZ Vertex2 SSD (Sandforce) drives with the Portege r700?

Ever since I've upgraded the stock HDD I've had issues with the BIOS recognising the SDD when rebooting. The issue is intermittent if I boot the laptop from cold it's fine, the SDD is recognised and everything is ok. When needing to reboot the laptop from Windows 7 (64bit) it will hang at the Toshiba Leading Innovation screen. It seems that the BIOS can't detect the drive for some reason and just freezes. I've read the threads about the Thumbprint software but am already running the version v1.0.2.32 - so think this is unrelated.

I've recently updated the OCZ Vertex2 firmware to v1.32 hoping this would fix the problem and it hasn't. The issue could be more with Sandforce compatibility with the Toshiba BIOS.

I'm currently running BIOS v1.9 - please can you guys do anything to fix this?

I have a Port?g? R700-172 - PT311E-03201KGR
It's a WIN 7 64-bit Machine.

Current BIOS 1.70
Current EC-Version: 1.40

For this machine, a BIOS and EC update is out there.
So I downloaded the "BIOS220_EC160.exe" update and tried to process.

The first message during the update process is: "There is need to update BIOS and EC".
When I continue with "Execute the update", I receive the error message:
"Error: Preparing to update was failed
Given image file is not compatible with this cimputer"

There are no changes in the hardware of the machine. The only problem I see is that we are using McAfee Endpoint Encryption (V6.0.2.6) which might have some influence on updating the BIOS.

But I'm not sure.
Does anybody have an ides?

Answer:Portege R700 - BIOS-Update 2.20-WIN is not working

Is BIOS update important for you?
Do you have problems with notebook?

I?ve got three years old notebook and BIOS has not been updated?

However, as far as I know the VAP (value added package) needs to be up to date to get BIOS updated?. Also the firewalls and other security and antivirus software preinstalled on the system should be disabled before trying to update the BIOS.

Greetings all,

Portege R830-138 Current BIOS 3.7

I am unable to update the BIOS to either 3.8 or the latest 3.9 version. Error: This Computer Is Not Supported.

VAP is installed and modules are working. A previous forum post suggested that it may be related to the recent Intel Management Interface firmware update which I had applied and am unable to uninstall or rollback.

Any suggestions?

Answer:Portege R830 - BIOS 3.9 Update Error

A friend of mine has updated the BIOS from 3.7 to 3.9 without any big problems.
It could be possible that you cannot update the BIOS because of the missing or disabled TVALZ services.

Go to Control panel -> Administrative Tools icon and click services.

Here you can check if the TVALZ service is available ? if its available, enable it and then try to update the BIOS.

If this will not work, you will need to recover the notebook using Recovery HDD or Recovery disk? The BIOS update should functions using the Toshiba factory settings

I purchased an M400 Tablet system and having a lot of trouble with the BIOS.

I am able to get into the BIOS, but it appears to be restricted.
It says there are three pages and to use the pgup and pgdn to change pages, this does not work.

I have tried it with a USB keyboard and removing the keyboard from the tablet, but this does not work either.
The laptop does not have SWSetup installed on it. I downloaded this from the website but say's that the BIOS is incorrect.

I then decided to flash the BIOS.
Downloaded windows BIOS flash and that say's that the BIOS is incorrect.

I would like to reinstall the OS but at the moment I am unable to to get it to boot from the CD as I can't change the boot sequence.

Can any one please help me.

Answer:Portege M400 - Cannot navigate through BIOS pages

That?s strange.
First of all you can boot from the CD pressing F12 and then you could choose ODD as booting device.

Secondly it?s interesting to know if some passwords (user or supervisor password) have been set because such kind of password could restrict changing the BIOS options.

I've got a Portege M200 and I want to change the batterie of the BIOS but I dont know where it is!

Can anybody help me?

Answer:Portege M200 - How can I exchange the BIOS battery?

The BIOS battery is placed on the mainboard and to exchange it you must remove a lot of parts and screws. This is a little bit tricky and therefore you should have experience in notebook disassembling.

If you want a new BIOS battery you should contact the nearest authorized service provider. The technicians can do this for you.

But why do you want a new battery? The battery will also be charged if you have the AC/DC adaptor connected.

Answer:Portege R830-10R - Bios Update problems

Did you unzip the BIOS package correctly?
Did you install the VAP for Win 7?

The VAP is needed and I noticed that BIOS update issue can appear if something is wrong with the installed VAP. Maybe you should update/reinstall the VAP.

Good day, I have two questions about Portege 3410.

The first one: I cannot update BIOS (there is 1.50 in use, I want to update to 1.60). The instruction does not work: I connect Teac USB-drive on USB-port, switch USB-FDD emulation to Enable, switch notebook On with F12 pressed, the message "Ready to update BIOS..." appears, I presed key, but nothing happend. What's wrong?

The second one: I cannot install Windows XP on to notebook (it does not boot neither FDD-USB, nor External DVD-USB).
How can I install Windows?

Thank you.

Answer:Portege 3410 - How to update BIOS and install XP?

Just one question: Why do you want to update the BIOS? Is it really necessary?
I ask this because this update is always a little bit risky and you could damage the ROM module.
Anyway, have you tried to load default settings in BIOS before you start the update and install XP?

You can install XP without CD. Therefore you must copy the i386 folder on the HDD from another computer and some booting files for HDD? I think you should search a little bit with Google to find workaround for this. You should find enough! ;)

I want to update the bios of my Portege R500 to the 1.6 version. It's a windows-update BIOS and when I launch it under Windows 7, I get the message:
[Error] BIOS Update is not supported OS. Unsupported OS or service pack is installed.

I have to reinstall XP in order to update the Bios? File name is P0058v160.exe. Does anyone know if BIOS update works in Virtualisation mode? I would install Sunbox VM, install XP and run the BIOS update. But will it work?

Does anyone has an idea?

Answer:Re: Portege R500 - How to update BIOS on Windows 7?

Hi Roro,

Yes you have to install Windows XP to update the BIOS but my question is: Is this update necessary or just for fun? BIOS update is always a little bit risky and should only be done to solve problems. If your computer runs properly I wouldn?t make this update.

I don?t know if this update is possible on Virtual XP but I wouldn?t try it. If the update fails you need a new ROM module or mainboard. I think the BIOS update isn?t designed for Virtualization mode?

Hello to all.

Our R200 went into hibernate mode after the battery power went low, then by some unlucky twist of fate, the battery got removed accidentally. Now it won't boot properly 'cause every time it displays a BSOD stating Unmountable_Boot_Volume.

I could fix this easily by clearing the hiberfil.sys file which is the reason for the BSOD, if only I could change the boot order. Unfortunately, going into the BIOS, I am only able to access the first page where the only editable items are the time, the date, and the passwords. Pressing Pageup or Pagedn does nothing. The BIOS is updated to the latest found in this site.

Hitting F12 or F2 when the toshiba logo and the icons appear does nothing either. This has a 1.8" HDD and there are no available adapters in our area. I can boot to CD if, and only if, I take out the HD. But then, it's pointless since I can't repair it like that. It doesn't get recognized if I replug it after booting. When I reboot, it does the BSOD thing again. This is getting to be a frustrating cycle.

I've scoured these forums for other ways to boot to CD, and applied the suggestions, like hitting "c", to no avail.

Any help would be very much appreciated.

Thanks in advance.

Answer:Portege R200 cannot set boot sequence on BIOS

hi cwb,
how about booting from usb?
a stick with a live system like bartpe or similar...

hdd cant be recognised after you have booted your machine, because the boot squence initializes hardware...

is the hdd recognised by bios correctly?
refer to manual there should be listed the key combinations to boot other devices...

i think the hdd is gone...
try to boot from sd-card - *boot sequence settings have to be changed in bios*...
if your are not able to do this ask a servicepartner...

I'm after some advice about a problem I'm having with my R700, I can't get the laptop to recognise USB hard drives at the boot stage. I'm trying to use Acronis to create an image as I have 40 of these laptops.

The USB CD rom drive is recognised, and so is a Corsair USB pen (which unfortunately isn't big enough), but I have three USB hard drives (a Freecom Tough Drive, Buffalo MiniStation and a Western Digital Passport) and none of them are recognised by the BIOS. USB legacy emulation is enabled.

Am I missing something?

Thanks, Karen

Answer:Portege R700-17Z bios not recognising USB devices

The BIOS does not support *USB HDD* as a booting device. Just USB CD/DVD drive or USB memory stick are bootable USB devices.

Hi - looking for some advice here.

Have just updated to the latest BIOS for my R830 - version 3.10 (EC version 1.20). Update went without a hitch.

My fingerprint reader is kaput - and am going away travelling for a while - so need to increase the security on the laptop - so thought I would put a password on the HDD via BIOS.

However I'm having some issues - and would value any help and advice.

Under the BIOS tab 'Security' - I have a number of choices. BIOS password (User and Supervisor), HDD1/SSD1 Password (Mode - User Only, User+Master) and TPM (Enabled, Disabled).

Having researched things - I think I should be leaving the BIOS password as 'Not Registered', setting the HDD1/SSD1 Password mode to user and setting TPM to 'enabled'. This should then allow me to 'register' a user password.

I then go to register a user password - type in the password - and then another window opens for me to type a re-confirmation - which I do.

But whatever password I use - I always get a message "Passwords are not the same Press ENTER to continue". Pressing continue takes me back to the point in BIOS where it tells me that the HDD1/SSD1 'User' password is not registered.

You have to believe me - that although my typing isn't great - I am typing the same passwords. I've even tried different types of passwords (numbers only, letter only, mix of the two) - to no avail.

I've tried enabling and disabling TPM - again - no change.

Any idea what's going on? ... Read more

Answer:BIOS and HDD Passwords questions - Portege R830

I recommend to set only the BIOS password.
This is the password which would be asked at the beginning while powering on the unit.
As far as I know the unknown BIOS password cannot be deleted by any user but only by an Toshiba ASP. So it?s a good security option?

Furthermore the ?User Password? and Supervisor Password can be set using the Toshiba Assist.
Check the Toshiba tools in All Programs -> Toshiba -> Utilities -> Toshiba Assist
Here you have to check the tab called Security

I have notebook TOSHIBA PORTEGE R100, I wanted to reinstall win XP using PCMCIA HDD (MK2001MPL).

It is easily detectable by Windows XP, but it is not detectable by my BIOS v. 1.3 (I've changed booting priority).
I need to mention that I formatted it to FAT32 and copied bootdiskette, but it still doesn't work. Is there any possibility to start the PCMCIA HDD with BIOS, or can I use it just as internal HDD.
Maybe there is special driver or other method to solve my problem.

Waiting for answer, any advice would be helpful...

Answer:Portege R100 - BIOS can't see 1.8-inch 2GB PCMCIA HDD

the problem is that the HDD is not intended to act like a normal drive. It?s more an extension and I am not sure I it would really work under the BIOS like you describe.
I think it wouldn?t work because the HDD needs a driver which is not given when just the BIOS is loaded. Bios loads PCMCIA Network cards but I never heard from a PCMCIA HDD which was used as bootable drive. Maybe USB but no PC-Card.

IMHO I think you should drop your thoughts about using the Card as a bootable drive and use it like a normal internal memory expansion.

Otherwise: google is your friend :)

Four days ago I bought R830-111 [PT320E-00X00XPL] and ADATA S599 2.5" SATA II Solid State Drive 128GB to replace the standard HDD drive. Unfortunately, the new SSD drive does not work with this laptop.

Several times, after many restarts disk was visible in the BIOS.
But there is no possibility to normal use of SSD drive.
I did update laptop BIOS [BIOS360_EC140_WIN] and SSD drive. That did not help.

Can someone help and tell me how to make to work this ADATA SSD and Portege?

Best Regards

Answer:Portege R830-111 BIOS can't find SSD drive

Did you check if the SSD drive needs an firmware update?
In some cases this is needed?but in worst case the SSD drive could not be compatible and this means that you will need to test another one :(
