Portege BIOS Passwd Reset - Can it be done?

Question: Portege BIOS Passwd Reset - Can it be done?

Dear all,

I don't expect anyone to tell me how on-line!
I just need to now if this is possible and the best way of doing it.

I'd rather not use the various password cracking s/w or home-made parallel jumpers.
Can I get this done 'professionally"?

Thanks in advance,

Preferred Solution: Portege BIOS Passwd Reset - Can it be done?

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Answer: Portege BIOS Passwd Reset - Can it be done?

Yes, the BIOS password can be deleted.

This procedure can only make an ASP (authorized service provider). Here you can search:

I have a Toshiba M400 and i was wondering how i could reset the bios password. I disabled the finger print scanner recently becuase i decided i dont need it anymore but it still asks for a bios password which i forgot. I used to just swipe my finger and it would let me boot up and all that gravey.

If you guys know how to reset the password. Either physically or through software that would be awesome.

Or if you guys know who is the bios manufacturer for Portege M400's I could probebly give them a call and ask my self.

I could send it in but I want to avoid that and leave it as a last option.

BTW this laptop was purchased in USA.

Answer:Reset BIOS password on Portege M400 - Bios Manufacturer?

You will be not able to remove the BIOS password yourself if you have forgotten it.
As far as I know the manufacture of the BIOS which was preinstalled on Port?g? M400 is......... Toshiba ;)

So you have to contact the authorized Toshiba service provider in your country and only these guys are able to remove the BIOS password which you have forgotten.

I have bought a Porege R100 about five years ago and haven't used it for 3 years. I have forgotten my startup password and was wondering if you guys could help me deal with it. I should be able to deliver necessary information regarding the purchase if needed via email.

Answer:Portege R100 - BIOS password reset

Only an ASP (authorized service provider) can delete a password. Here it is a user to user forum and nobody from Toshiba is here so you have to go to an ASP.

Here you can search for a local ASP: => Support & Downloads => Find an ASP

Hi all

I just purchased a used Portege R700 and want to reinstall Windows.
I can't access the BIOS due to a supervisor password setup in Toshiba's PasswordUtility. The previous owner did not supply this password.

How can I reset it?

Answer:Re: Portege R700 - How to reset BIOS/Supervisor password?

Hi Spets

You cannot reset BIOS password. It must be done by authorized Toshiba service provider. Sorry.

If you need addresses and phone numbers you can find it on Toshiba support page under > Support & Downloads > Find an ASP

My Portege R700M stopped working after I spilled tea on it. Service center had rejected it quoting 'Motherboard, damaged', The laptop was setup for BIOS password protection for HDD.

Even though the hard drive is intact, I am not able to recover the data from due to BIOS password protection. will Toshiba able to help me unlock the password.

Answer:Defective Portege R700M - BIOS & HDD password reset

I presume mainboard is defective and will be replaced. I presume HDD is OK so I believe your original HDD will be used again. After mainboard replacement you don?t need BIOS password anymore. New mainboard will not be secured by BIOS password.

At least explain the situation and Toshiba technicians will explain to you how it works.

Hello everyone, I have a laptop XPS L502x and due to keyboard problems I misstyped the bios passwd and got it locked, I already called DELL support, proved ownership and they provided a "Master Password" that doesn't work... they also said "If this code doesn't work we cannot help you with this problem"...
As a software developer I really find it hard to believe that a company like DELL would create a lock without a key... I mean, the BIOS passwd is a security feature to prevent others from using the computer, what happens if someone tries to my laptop and locks it? I'm left with an unusable laptop... that doesn't sound very good...
Of course, if there is no solution to this problem this one was my third and last DELL laptop...

Answer:XPS L502x Bios Passwd locked

Have you owned the system since it was new?  Has the mainboard ever been replaced?

Suddenly, the battery meter shows a very low battery level (5% ?) and an error message says I might have to change the battery. This after two years of usage only.
Before buying a new battery I want to try a battery reset. says there is a battery reset button. I don't see it on the R930-1C8.

Any idea how where to find a reset button on a R930 ? Does it exist ?

The user manual says about resetting on p.5-6
Fully discharge the battery by leaving it in the computer with the power on until the system automatically turns it self off.Connect the AC adaptor to the DC IN 19V jack in the computer and to the power network.Charge the battery until the battery indicator glows green.Repeat these steps two or three times until the battery recovers normal capacity

Did you reset a worn-out battery and did the reset solve the problem ?

Well, I chose the boot as "legacy bios only" after receiving the x220. I did a clean install of Win7 ultimate 64bits (which means the setting soft provided by Lenovo does not work) and then updated the BIOS to 1.15. After all these, the machine runs mostly fine but I noticed that I could not log into the BIOS setup any more. Pressing F1\F2\F12\thinkVamtage when the bootup screen shows up (press thinkVantage bottom....), and nothing happens. It does not beep as it did before and does not respond to the buttom press. That means I could not choose bootup device either - it will log into Windows from HDD no matter how you tried to boot from other devices. Any ideas on the problem? And I guess resetting the BIOS might solve the problem, but how? Any help is appreciated.

Answer:Can not log into x220 BIOS? How to reset BIOS setting without entering BIOS setup?

Try turning the system completely off, then power it on and press F1.I've seen strange cases where pressing F1 doesn't work on a warm boot.  It always works on a cold boot.

Hi, I've been offered a damaged possibly repairable Portege R200 (no, it is not stolen, legitimate sale). The machine does not boot in it's current state. If I repair and find the fingerprint security enabled, is it possible to clear it and start over (I'm not interested in the existing disk contents, I'm happy to format and reinstall a fresh OS image)

Sending it back to Toshiba is OK if that's what it takes, but I don't want to purchase and spend more money fixing it if it's totally non recoverable due to security lockout. Any advice or info much appreciated

Answer:Portege R200: How to reset fingerprint security?

As far as I known the Omnipass Fingerprint Reader Utility is responsible for this security.
This software should be found in the control panel.
You can add and remove the profiles (user) and set the settings to encrypt/decrypt the content on the HDD.

In my opinion it has no influence on the booting process...

The technique for password removing is not the same for all notebook models.
You cannot remove it alone.

Hi guys, I would really appreciate some help, please

I am having trouble with factory reset procedure on my Toshiba Portege M700 running Vista,

what I do is following:

1. Turn off the computer by pressing & holding the power button
2. Power up by pressing the power button
3. I am prompted for ( BIOS HDD ) password, I enter pasword
4. I press F8 and enter into Advanced Boot Options
5. Select Repair Your Computer, hit enter
6. I select correct keyboard layout in System Recovery Options pop up, hit Next
7. I log in as User by entering my password
8. I select Windows Complete PC Restore

New window appears, saying "Restore your entire computer from a backup" - Windows cannot find a backup on the hard disks or DVDs on this computer. The area where I could specify the route to the file is grayed out. It's not that I now the route, but I assume there is a hidden partition with the Vista install files on it (?)

In a smaller pop up screen (on top of the first one) there is a similar message:" No valid backup locations could be found"...

In an ideal world, I would use the (factory) backup from the original internal hard drive, rather than buying and waiting for the factory backup / restore DVDs ...

Many many thanks in advance!!

Answer:Factory reset Portege M700 - Vista OS

The explanation is pretty simply. For some reason your notebook cannot find recovery image saved on your HDD. I cannot say why but this can happen if the recovery image is deleted, removed to other folder or in case that HDD partitions are changed.

Recovery image is fixed with so called ?markers? and when you start recovery image installation the wizard search these markers. In case the markers are not found you will get this message on the screen.

So now you have the problem because HDD installation will not work. Only option for you now is to install original recovery image using recovery media but I?m afraid you didn't create one, right?

Either you must order original recovery disc from Toshiba or you can install own OS version using Microsoft installation disc.

What do you think about all that?

hello !

my 'problem':

on my portege (r700-174) i run a win7 (which was preinstalled on that notebook), a win 8.1. and for some tests the win10 technical preview

all the Systems are protected via Password and Fingerprints.

also the win10 test-System (to test fingerprint-Utility within win10)

now i deleted an old build of win10 and made a clean install with the latest build

unfortunately i forgort to unregister the Fingerprint i had registerd with that old win10 - so now this finger can not be used
to be registerd for the new win10 (or any other System)

my question

is there any possibility to completely reset (delete all Fingerprints for all Systems) the fingerprintscanner out from one of my running Systems or to unregister the
Fingerprint for that system, that does not longer exist on my portege ?

thanks for any hints

Answer:How to reset fingerprint sensor on Portege R700-174?

The fingerprints are stored on the fingerprint sensor and you will need to follow the instructions in this Toshiba document to remove your fingerprint scans.

In case this procedure would not work, only Toshiba authorized service provider would be able to erase users fingerprint related privacy information on the fingerprint sensor flash.

I have an SSD which I will be installing in the laptop above.

I would be grateful if anyone can shed some light on how that could be achieved so I am able to move the factory reset software along on the SSD from the old hard drive?

Also if there is a generic guide on the install itself please?

Much appreciated

Answer:Installing an SSD on Portege R700-184 with Factory Reset software

Before you do anything create recovery DVD using preinstalled Toshiba recovery disc creator.
As far as I know you can only make clean recovery image installation using created recovery disc.

Create disc, built-in new SSD, check if this new SSD is recognized properly and try to install recovery image using created recovery disc.

Ok I bought a second hand Toshiba Portege r830- 138 a year ago and it didn't come with a recovery disk..
Since my laptop is beginning to run slow I've been trying to reformat/reset back to factory settings..
[I've tried the hold down (0) key button and press the power button once at the same time and wait for the beep and then release the (0) key.. But it doesn't seem to work it just brings me right to the log in screen..
Then I've tried the press (F8 button) fast but it just brings me to Advance Boot Options... Which is useless cuz it doesn't bring me to the reset to factory settings..
So please tell me how I can reset to factory settings without a recovery disk because my brother totally did it back then without any disks I just forgot to ask him how to do it.. And now I've lost contact of him so I can't ask him..

Thanks in Advance ✌

I doubt the passwords will revert back to the old ones. Not sure if they could build that functionality into the SAM database. Does not sound like a very secure or reasonable solution to me.

I know this is pretty off-the-wall, but I don't know where else to turn....

The company I work for has a couple of old Sun Sparc2 systems that run some old CAD software (Cadnetix). We keep them around in case we have to work on any of the old designs we have archived. Which almost never happens...

But now we do need to work on something, but no one knows the passwords (!!!!). The guy that knew them left (reportedly not happily) and, apparently, changed them before he left, without leaving ANY records. He even changed the default root password. No one has a clue as to what he may have changed them to, and no one knows where he is, even if he were willing (fat chance!) to tell us what they are or change the passwords (even if he remembered them).

Reloading software is out, because that would wipe the old CAD software, which we have no way of reloading properly.

In another life (10 or 15 years ago), I took an admin class given by Sun, and one of the tricks they taught us was how to hack in to the /etc/passwd (or maybe it was the EEPROM password?) file and wipe the passwords.

I remember you had to fire up the system, cd to ???, then use the "tiny" editor (or whatever it was called - not VI - some sort of line-by-line editor, though it used some of the same commands as VI). I just can't remember the exact steps to get to where that password file is. And how to invoke the editor (I think it was LE maybe?).

Does anyone here know how to do this?... Read more

Answer:Not sure where else to ask this... Sparc2 passwd file.

You need to have a way to boot into Single User Mode. Once you are booted to SU it will drop you to the BASH prompt. Just type passwd, hit [ENTER] and you will be prompted to change the Root Password.

I am look for a last ditch help on fixing the BIOS/POST problem on a perfectly fine E6230
I was attempting to make a powered eSATA cable work when I enabled the SATA 4 and SATA 5 button in the BIOS.
After reboot... nothing..
I have been told it is a motherboard failure but this is too co-incidental!
I have tried a reset of the BIOS by disconnecting all power even the BIOS Coin battery .... nothing - no POST - although the LED shows that laptop is detecting lack of memory and HDD
A search shows that for INSPIRON laptops the BIOS can be unpacked and re-FLASHED to reset.
Does anyone know how to achieve this with the DELL Latitude Laptop or another way to reset the BIOS setting please?

Ok...Found a way around.  Phyically removed the SSD and I can once again enter the BIOS and boot off USB and the CD. Rapid Drive was competely incompatible with software I need to run, so was attempting to install a clean copy of Windows and to boot only off the hard drive.  In doing so, I removed the SSD from the Boot list in the BIOS.  After doing so, the system became incapable of booting off of any media.  When I press F2 during post, I just get "Please Wait..."   Pressing F12 just locks up on the logo screen.  Does the system not work when the SSD is removed from the bootable devices in BIOS?  How can I reset my fancy new brick?

It seems when I reboot the machine it forgets, otherwise it will remember even if I close IE as long as no reboot happens.

I tried to sneak a new mobo under XP's nose.

It booted to desktop, and I got the 'Hardware change/activation' message. I chose 'later', and then I got drivers loaded. It wanted to reboot, and I did.

It failed, and I get to recovery/repair with the install CD, and it asks for Admin password. There is none. I press 'Enter', and it loads the C:\Windows> prompt without any action, not even a blinker.

Running Ubuntu Linux on the M400 and it seems almost all BIOS versions prior 3.60 are broken because there are APIC quirk errors on the CPU. Maybe Microsoft could work around the broken APIC tables for a while but with Linux things are a bit cumbersome. Microsoft asked Toshiba for a BIOS update to deal with these issues and starting from 3.50 it seems to be fixed.

see here

Even in Linux no more APIC errors are seen. :-) But after updating to 3.60 BIOS the boot screen stays active and is preventing me to select an option for a multi boot entry (grub). When the OS is already starting the boot screen turns white at first and then gives finally control to the OS. Are others seeing this as well?

I am able to select something in my boot menu but it's more guessing because the boot screen is still on top. Very annoying this :-(

Another issue I have is that sometimes the system freezes for a couple of seconds and then goes on, nothing to be seen in logs when using Ubuntu or WXP tablet. So could be a bug in BIOS once again. Again looking for confirmation, are other experiencing this as well.

Did reflash 3.60 a couple of times but seeing this behaviour over and over again.

Although there seems to be some fan control in 3.60. It doesn't fire like a DC9 but still not as silent as the 1.80W or 2.10N BIOS versions were. Love to see these fan noise changes incorporated in 3.60 and later?

Answer:Portege M400 and 3.60 BIOS

Hi Robert

I know you will hate me but the fact is that Portege M400 has sticker near the keyboard and there is written something like ?Designed for Microsoft ??. With short words: Linux OS is not supported.

If you need some help with Linux on Toshiba notebooks please check

Issue about freezing is very strange and if you want to check it properly install recovery image without any additional software. In this case you will have ?factory settings? and clean preinstalled OS. If you will notice some exceptional issues you should contact authorized service partner and clarify this.

Good luck!

Hello everyone,

I upgraded the BIOS on my Z30-B-119 laptop, and it is much worst than the original BIOS so I would like to downgrade it.
There was no way to save the original BIOS when updating and the previous BIOS is not available on the website.

Do anyone have the original BIOS and knows how to extract it?

Or maybe someone knows how to contact Toshiba technical team directly? (Seeing what they implemented in new BIOS, I have no hopes they read this forum or care about user opinions.)

If you wonder why I want to downgrade and what is wrong with it, see below for explanation.

I was convinced that the new BIOS would fix the problem with the fan, which switched on way too early, but it turned out they made it much worst! Now the fan switches on at 42?. Before it was 50?, which was already a stupid choice of Toshiba engineers, providing that the temperature rating of this CPU is 105? so they could keep the laptop quiet at least up to 60?, especially that many people complain about the fan in this model. Instead, Toshiba did the opposite and lowered the temperature even more.

Seeing how senseless choices their engineers make, I will never buy another Toshiba and will not recommend anyone buying their products. But since I already made the mistake an bought a Toshiba laptop, I hope I will be able to downgrade the BIOS or contact them to ask for an update.

Let me know if you know how to do it.

Answer:How to downgrade BIOS on Portege Z30-B?

The istall.exe should not crash and you should not update the BIOS in safe mode!
The Windows should be booted up and should run correctly!

Here is a Toshiba FAQ How to update BIOS:

Possibly the error code is related to corrupt windows OS or to missing some necessary Toshiba tools.
Using Win XP the Common Modules should be installed.
Using Vista or Win 7 the VAP (value added packed) should be installed.

I have a Toshiba R100 and am trying to upgrade the BIOS from 1.20 to 1.60. However, I just get "different ROM version" when I run the update.

The model number on the bottom is P2010 - is this slightly different from an R100? If so, where can I obtain a BIOS update?

Answer:Portege R100: Trying to upgrade the BIOS from 1.20 to 1.60

Well, I have found the BIOS version 1.6 from 30.9.05 on the Toshiba driver page.
This version should works properly.
I assume you have tried to upgrade the BIOS with the win-version. Please check this document: IOS&FID=TRO0000000b07

There you will find information how to upgrade the BIOS on the R100. You should use the trad-BIOS version.

Is there a way to fix that or is this really the end of my little M100?

Answer:Portege M100 Bios damaged

You should try this at first: Remove the battery and AC/DC adaptor, wait up to one hour and then connect the battery and the AC/DC adaptor. Now you can try it again.

In worst case the mainboard must be replaced. For this you can go to an authorized service provider.

I have encountered the fault that crops up on addition of an admin password for the BIOS on my R700. i added the password directly in the BIOS itself as i have re-installed windows onto an SSD and as such dont have any of the bloatware from toshiba installed.

now when i try to access the BIOS on bootup by pressing the Esc key i get a black screen and white message saying press F2 to enter setup. i press F2 and the system reboots and loads to windows, or if i press Esc again same message. it will loop like this forever with no BIOS access. pressing F1 does nothing as does Esc at the press F2 request.

so essentially i'm completely locked out of my own BIOS. i have tried putting the old HDD back in with the toshiba security manager in it but it doesnt find any BIOS password so i cant delete it using that

my next plan was to simply dismantle the computer and remove the CMOS battery and allow the BIOS to reset to defaults......however i know this only works on certain computers not all, so my question is, is this worth a shot??? or if not what can i do to get back into my BIOS??

Answer:BIOS Update not possible for Portege M700

It seems that Vista OS was preinstalled on this notebook.
This means that you have installed the Win 7 system at your own hand.

The point is that BIOS update requires some essential Toshiba tools.
For example the Value Added Package is important software and should be preinstalled on the notebook.

Is VAP installed?
If not install the VAP before trying to update the BIOS.

To access the BIOS you should use and press the ?ESC? button immediately after Portege was power up.

But as I understood you right, you want to boot from the internal CD/DVD drive.

Well, you could also try to press the ?C? button.
This would enable the booting from the ODD.

Furthermore pressing F12 button would allows you to enable the boot menu on the screen.
Then choose the CD/DVD drive to boot from CD .

i do not have a floppy drive on my machine, only usb ports and a sd card slot. How can i upgrade the bios?

Answer:Portege 4000 bios upgrade

The easiest way is to create a dos boot cd-rom. There are several descriptions on the web. Google for it.
Add the extracted Toshiba bios files, ec29nobb.bin, chgbiosa.exe and chgfirma.exe to the CD-rom.

At first boot from the cd and run 'chgfirma ec29nobb.bin'.
Now the ECKBC-Firmware is written (don't power off during flash!!!)
Than boot again from cd and run 'chgbiosa'.
This flashes the Bios.
Both flash are necessary!

Here is how to extract the Toshiba bios file.
At first you have to extract the R211VOL2.exe file. Easiest way to do so is to use 'universal extractor' -- google for it.
After this you will get the file R211VOL2.IMA. This is a floppy image file.
You can extract the single files in the archiv using winimage (trial version should work).

Good luck!

I have a Portege 3440CT with bios version 1.50.

This version does not support large HDD so I thought I'd update the BIOS. (don't know if version 1.60 does either, does anyone know?)

When I try to run the bios-update-program on win2000, it says "Initial error", anyone know what's causing this?

BIOS is downloaded from Toshibas website.

I have no floppy or CD-rom available.
Have tried the updater on win98, and also in DOS and it says "this utility not available on v86 mode!"

Is there any way to place the BIOS file on a small hard drive, and boot from that?

Ideas, anyone?

Answer:Bios update on Portege 3440CT.

Sorry CyB but I really do not understand you. If you check Toshiba support page you will find two BIOS updates. Both of them must be done using FDD. So now I am asking myself why you try to do it under running operating system. Sorry but it is really ridiculous.

Toshiba provide two different BIOS updates. One is TRAD (must be done with FDD) and WIN (can be done under running WXP or now Vista). For old notebook models there is no WIN version.

Is there any way to place the BIOS file on a small hard drive, and boot from that?

As far as I know something like this is not possible and you can check eBay and obtain FDD. You can get it for few bucks. It is really not expensive.

To be honest I don?t think it is BIOS related issue. As far as I know battery should be charged even if the notebook is OFF so why BIOS update if battery cannot be charged at all.

For me it sounds like hardware related issue.

How old is your Portege?

You can download another version of the same bios-update here : PR10U

This file contains more information about performing the update, see the readme-file
you can either do a direct update within XP or make a bootable diskette or a bootable CD

If the "direct update" within XP won't work, you will need at least an USB-fdd-drive, most of them are recognized easily by the bios ( hold F12 during start-up and choose fdd )

Hi All,

I have a Toshiba Portege R830, running 32-bit Windows 7 (SP1) enterprise (for work).
I also boot into Linux Mint 14 64-bit, which I have installed on a portable USB HDD (outside work).

I recently bought a USB 3 HDD, but when I connect it to the USB 3 port on my R830, it only gives me USB 2 speeds (25 MB/s).

I checked with some diagnostic utilities (usbdeview, etc), which say that the drive is connected in USB 2.1 mode.

The drive reports itself as being USB 3, the cable is USB 3 (SuperSpeed), and the port I'm using on the R830 is 3.

I experience the same, whether I boot into windows or linux.

I updated all drivers on both OSs, to no avail.

next i tried to update the BIOS, but I keep getting the following error:
"An error occurred while preparing the update environment.
You have not given permission to execute the update."

For the record, this is the BIOS I'm going from, & to.
BIOS Version : Current Ver.2.80 --> Updated Ver.4.10
EC Version : Current Ver.1.10 --> Updated Ver.1.60

Does anyone know why I would not be getting USB 3 speeds (which, for my drive, are expected to be around 40 to 50 MB/s), or why all diagnostics are saying USB 2?

Does anyone know how to overcome the BIOS update issue?
(I've tried safe mode, disabling AV, disabling NX)

Answer:Portege R830 - USB 3 & BIOS updates

Is this USB driver installed?

Please try to install it and check USB speed again.

I have been wrestling with this device for a while now and I seem to be progressively making the situation worse.

My current issue is that I can no longer access the BIOS after changing a setting in the BIOS that related to USB emulation (or something like that). I was in the process of trying to make the device boot from a USB and pretty much twiddling with every setting to see what would work.

This one didn't. And now the device no longer responds to F2. It's like it is ignoring the keyboard. Doh!

Is there some way to roll back or re-flash the BIOS? Or another way to access it? I tried an external keyboard, to no avail.

How did I get here?

Well ... I was given this device to put back to factory condition and I could not find an obvious option that would do this, other than the Toshiba Maintenance Utility which looked hopeful. It offered to erase the partition (which at the time seemed fair enough) - BUT THAT"S all it did - so the machine just repeatedly boots, displays "Please insert system disk" and then reboots.

OK, I'm an idiot - but it does seem silly for Toshiba to offer an option that instantly bricks the machine?

Anyway, I've moved on from that problem to one that is significantly more dire. Not being able to access the BIOS means I don't have any options - unless one of you wonderful people can help me discover one.

I have since discovered that the next setting I was going to adjust - the Secure Boot setting - may have solved... Read more

Answer:Portege - Can't access BIOS after update

Which notebook model do you have and which operating system do you use?

If you use Win8.1 you have access to some BIOS settings using settings in system settings. Check it out please.

I have only linux (antergos) on my Portage Z30-B-100, Does anybody know of any way to flash update bios?

Answer:Portege Z30-B-100 update bios from linux

On the Toshiba EU driver page you can find only the win-based BIOS update version.
This means that BIOS can be updated from running system only and you need to run Windows OS in order to start the BIOS update procedure. Linux isn't supported in this case...

Here you can find the How to doc about the BIOS update

I have a Portege P3440 which I haven't used for about 8 months. When I turn it on now it comes up with screen asking for a password, and unfortunately I don't remember the password.

It seems like a net bios password but I am not sure. It has Win NT installed. Please help as it is getting rather urgent.

Answer:Portege P3440 asking for a BIOS password

Sorry Shaana but if the BIOS password is not known to me it must be deleted. This can be done by authorized service only. :(

What does the BIOS update for Portege Z830 (PT224 / PT225 / PT22L), version 1.80 do?

The description just says +"This BIOS Update adds increased functionality to your system."+, and I haven't been able to find anything more on Toshiba's website. The update was released 2013-05-24.

I've got actually two problems: How can I enter the Bios and why can't I install the latest drivers for the grafic chip?

I want to increase the grafic performance to the maximum, as I increased the RAM and the notebook is quite fast.
I'd like to play more games that need directx9c.

Whatever you can help me: tx in advance.

Answer:How can I enter the BIOS of a Portege M100?

Do you use the Toshiba BIOS or Phoenix BIOS?
I'm not 100% sure but I think it's a Toshiba BIOS... in this case you can use the ESC button to access the BIOS settings.

> I want to increase the graphic performance to the maximum,
I've got bad news for you... the only one, real way to increase the graphic performance is the graphic chip upgrade... BUT this is not possible. The GPU chip is fixes on the board and it's not possible to remove it.

> I'd like to play more games that need directx9c
Well, most of games need the directx9c. You could use the command "dxdiag" to access the DirectX settings and to check the installed version.

By the way; you can download the directx9c from the Microsoft website

I have a Toshiba Portege Z30-A
Maybe someone was able to perform the upgrade bios in windows 7 64 bit?

Answer:Re: Portege Z30-A - Bios update 3.80-WIN using Win 7 64bit

I upgraded to 3.70 EC 1.4 as soon as I got hands on my Z30t-A and when I noticed the 3.80 was available I downloaded the zip file. None of the 15 files has started the upgrade process.

I run Windows 8.1, but the BIOS upgrade should function the same as for WIN 7.
Toshiba must have forgotten to add a setup.exe or something.

I haven't seen a release note, but I'm a big fan of fresh software.

Hi there,
When I look for an update to the BIOS in my M400 at the Nordics version of Toshibas homepage - here is what I find;
On the nordics toshiba website they have the 1.50 version available for download, while the US version website I can download the newer 1.60 version. As my M400 is a Danish version I am a little unsure as to if it's ok to update my BIOS to v1.60 now that the nordics toshiba website don't have that BIOS version available.

Any thoughts and views about going ahead and installing the version 1.60 on my DK-version M400 is very welcomed.

Answer:Portege M400 - BIOS update to 1.60

Please don?t compare European and US notebooks models and don?t make update mix. If you have European notebook please use just the stuff available on Toshiba Europe download page.

If you don?t have problems with your unit and if operating system runs stabile, don?t do anything. It is just my advice.

Have a nice day!

i recently purchased two used portege 3490 CT Notebooks, both with BIOS version 1.60. I tried to upgrade to Version 1.90 with a USB-Floppy, but it wont accept the floppies. Theres no floppy access when i press a key after the bios update message.

Also booting from this USB floppy wont work. Is this a problem related to this specific USB floppy drive (it's a NEC)? Are there any other procedures to update the BIOS?

Answer:BIOS Update on a Portege 3490

Hello Thomas

I am not sure but I assume that your unit has no USB legacy support and, as far as I know, you can do it using original Toshiba FDD. Check please your BIOS settings.

I am pretty sure that you will not be able to make BIOS update using your FDD.

what is the BIOS EC?

in my BIOS it states BIOS version of 2.10 and EC version 1.40

on toshiba website latest revision is BIOS v2.10 and EC 1.50 as same flash update download. but as the BIOS is already upto date i want to know if trying to flash for the EC from 1.40 to 1.50 would be worth it?

n.b. presume the latest R700 BIOS is v2.10 as stated on the website? is there anywhere else i can check?

Answer:Portege R700 - BIOS EC update from 1.40 to 1.50

I believe the EC is an important function so I would update the EC to ensure the notebook is running optimally.

I don't know what was changed but you can usually find this information on the Toshiba America website in the support/downloads section/

Has anyone tried this new update ?
I was put off by the wording on the disclaimer.
It seems that in order to cut down on constant fan use the price to pay will be a hotter computer.
Is that going to affect the computer life time ?
Also, as it is a "stand alone" update, is it possible to undo the changes and revert to a previous version if necessary ?
Finally, is the increased heat on the base of the unit going to make it uncomfortable to work with as a tablet ?
Thanks for feed back.

Answer:Portege M400. BIOS update V 1.8

Yes I have updated my m400 to version 1.8 and No it does not run that hot im currently suing speed fan to monitor the temp and its stable at 38 degrees - with BIOS set to cooling - battery optimised, its very quite now! thats what i wanted as the fan for me was just to loud for such a small laptop. I went from 1.4 straight to 1.8 didnt do 1.7.
I still find however the power saver dosent do much in terms of the fan speed, but at least we know there was an issue and they have identified it in the BIOS release.

I recently bought a Portege R700 19M and I have downloaded the latest version of the BIOS available in the Toshiba support page and when I run the .exe file, it doesn't work with this message: "The computer is not supported"
And, when I have a look in the HWSetup Toshiba tool, it doesn't display the BIOS version but some weird character (not usual letters) so I can't know which version is installed.
thank you for your help

Answer:Portege R700 - Can't update the BIOS

Hi buddy,

Do you update the BIOS on preinstalled Windows version from Toshiba?
Are you logged in as Administrator when you try the update?

To be honest I doubt it?s a problem of released BIOS update because I found other threads where users report that BIOS update was successful.
