Bios update on Portege 3440CT.

Question: Bios update on Portege 3440CT.

Hi!

I have a Portege 3440CT with bios version 1.50.

This version does not support large HDD so I thought I'd update the BIOS. (don't know if version 1.60 does either, does anyone know?)

When I try to run the bios-update-program on win2000, it says "Initial error", anyone know what's causing this?

BIOS is downloaded from Toshibas website.

I have no floppy or CD-rom available.
Have tried the updater on win98, and also in DOS and it says "this utility not available on v86 mode!"

Is there any way to place the BIOS file on a small hard drive, and boot from that?

Ideas, anyone?

Preferred Solution: Bios update on Portege 3440CT.

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Answer: Bios update on Portege 3440CT.

Sorry CyB but I really do not understand you. If you check Toshiba support page you will find two BIOS updates. Both of them must be done using FDD. So now I am asking myself why you try to do it under running operating system. Sorry but it is really ridiculous.

Toshiba provide two different BIOS updates. One is TRAD (must be done with FDD) and WIN (can be done under running WXP or now Vista). For old notebook models there is no WIN version.

Is there any way to place the BIOS file on a small hard drive, and boot from that?

As far as I know something like this is not possible and you can check eBay and obtain FDD. You can get it for few bucks. It is really not expensive.

I have a Toshiba notebook - Portege 3440CT. My operating system is Windows 98, distributed by Toshiba. Now I need an update for my O.S. and I'm looking for Windows 2000 or more. I need a help.
Thanks

Answer:Portege 3440CT: Update my O.S.

Hi Octavian,

You are very lucky. You?re Portege 3440CT is supported for Windows 2000.
The best way to install new OS is to use original Toshiba Recovery CD. If you do not have one you must install all Drivers individual.

On the following page you can find necessary Drivers:

My portege 3440CT always cannot connect my external CD-ROM (EagleTec ET-RXD2600,PCMCIA).

I want to reinstall my notebook but I can't without that CD-ROM. I have download the DOS boot disk from EagleTec's web but still don't work.

Answer:Can't connect CD-ROM (portege 3440CT)

Hi,

When you go to
http://eu.computers.toshiba-europe.com - Support & Download - Driver Download you could find for your Portege 3440 (W98SE) a Companion Diskette.

This disk is also a boot disk and is responsible for detecting the external CD ROM.

Another suggestion is to go this topic:

There you can find discussion about the same problem. I hope it will help you.

Hi all,

After suffering a little frustration I've decided to use the wealth of knowledge and experience that is available on this support forum.

I have a Portege 3440CT which was supplied to my girlfriend a few years ago by a Company she worked for at the time. When the Company replaced the laptop we were allowed to keep the old one, which we use only very occasionally. Unfortunately, the laptop recently suffered a total and unrecoverable failure of the original hard drive, which wasn't a huge setback as there was no essential data on there.

Anyway, I sourced a compatible replacement hard drive - an Hitachi 30GB ATA-5/ IDE 2.5" 9.5mm 4200RPM, Pt no' DK23CA-30F - and fitted it, but as the hard drive is unformatted the laptop doesn't see that it is there. As I said earlier, the laptop was supplied to us by an employer, so we are not in possession of any Toshiba or Windows recovery discs that may have been supplied, the laptop was originally running Windows 98 Second Edition, and the sticker detailing the product key is still on the underside.

I approached one of Toshiba's service providers for help and they directed me back to Toshiba.
Toshiba said the laptop is no longer supported so they directed me back to a service provider, so around in circles I went.

My question is, if I purchased a copy of Windows 98 SE, or indeed Windows XP, and installed it from the external floppy drive, would that also include a facility to format the hard drive? I believe in... Read more

>My question is, if I purchased a copy of Windows 98 SE, or indeed Windows XP, and installed it from the external floppy drive, would that also include a facility to format the hard drive?

Yes, definitely yes!!! The installation from Win98or from other Windows versions like W2K or XP provides an option to format the HDD before installation of OS.
Just simply boot from such bootable CD to get this function.

Any reply is greatly appreciated.

Hi,

that's a problem, but I have no experince with it!

I know there are BIOS restrictions about HDD size. I think there is one at 8GB, but I'm nt sure.
At wwww.bios-info.de is a BIOS compendium available with some detailed infos like HDD restrictions!

hi there,
Just decided to dig out my 3440ct that has Windows 98se on it, and reformat an update it with XP. It only has 64mb at the moment but i thought if all went well then i would upgrade to 192mb and whack in a bigger hard drive than the 6gb original drive it has at the moment. i ve got the usb floppy a pcmcia ( a Toshiba one).

When i try to install XP it sees the Cd and begins the start up process, eg. loading devices. But whenever it gets to the last line saying "Setup is now starting..." it crashes with a blue screen with a "0x0000007B" error which i think is something to do with the boot drive.

I then stripped out the dive and installed XP sucessfully on a desktop using an adapter, put it back into the laptop it boots fine up until the first wime you see the XP logo and then crashes with the same error

I then tried a 60gb drive i had in my main laptop which i know works fine and got exactly the same message.

I then tried Windows 2000 which had the same problems, but finally did work with 98SE. I ve tried both with FAT and NTFS and i installed the latest 1.60 bios. But to no avail.

Anyone got any good ideas as to what im doing wrong?

Answer:Portege 3440ct OS install problems

Hi

When you install recovery CD it is just one file and when the external drive is right connected and recognized it is not problem to install it but when you install original Microsoft version the installation must be interrupted and the unit must restart before the installation continues. At this moment the external drive can not be found anymore. I presume that this is the problem in your case.

Try to create two partitions and copy whole Win CD on second partition and try to install the unit again.

I've just got hold of a (damaged) Portege 3440CT without a hard drive. I don't have any of the external drives, but I'm trying to install an OS. I can boot to DOS if I format a hard drive to make it bootable (I used one one non-Toshiba bootable USB utility or by putting it in a machine running DOS from a floppy).

If I put the Win2K installation files on the drive and run I386\winnt.exe installation starts, copies the files to the hard drive (doesn't matter if they are in the same partition or not) and reboots "to continue installation", except it doesn't. It just restsrts and sits there with a blinking _.

Am I missing something? Will what I'm trying ever work? Any suggestions?

Neil

PS. the damage is to one of the hinges, I want to make it into a picture frame.

Answer:Installing Win2k on Portege 3440CT

OK I know similar questions have been asked in the past, but I was hoping someone had got further than me.

In case anyone else is interested I have made a little progress so far - I've managed to install Win98 by copying the installation files to the hard drive and running setup /is ((or possibly setup /im - I don't remember which) this is to get round an error message which was coming up - windows setup requires 'largest executable program size' to be at least 442368 bytes to run - which may be to do with the old hard drive I'm using).

Unfortunately I don't have internet access at the moment at home so I've just downloaded the drivers and will install them tonight.

I'm hoping that I'll have more success installing Win2K as an upgrade, if not I can try Win98 or linux (I've got nothing against linux, it's just that I'm familiar with win2K/XP, and have very limited experience with linux - maybe this is my chance to learn!).

I have reistalled the OS (Windows 2000)
using drivers from the Toshiba site.
As far as I know everything works ok
except the Network Port replicator.
I can not get the PC to find the
Ethernet adapter and the sound output
from the replicator does not work either.
Drivers anyone?

How do I enable the Network adapter?

Thankfull for advice, Fredrik

Answer:Portege 3440CT Port replicator

Hello

I found some drivers for your unit. Please visit this site:
http://eu.computers.toshiba-europe.com
In my opinion you need the Lan driver (V4.1.65.0) and sound driver (V5.12.01.2123)
As far as I know you don?t have to enable the network adapter.
If you have right driver you just need to install this.

Answer:Portege 3440CT: How to install Windows?

Hi!

For this you can use the Microsoft installation disk. I don?t know which OS do you want but put the disk into the CD drive, boot from it and the installation begins.
After the installation you can start to install the drivers that you can download on the Toshiba website in *Archive*
http://eu.computers.toshiba-europe.com => Support & Downloads => Download Drivers

Maybe you can get a Toshiba recovery disk from an ASP or from eBay. The Toshiba recovery disk contains the factory settings and you must download and install each driver. This takes not so long as the Microsoft disk.

Hi All,

I want to install XP Pro onto my laptop, I have all the drivers sorted out.

I loaded the cd int the external cd rom and started the install, I have done this as an upgrade and fresh install, but the cd rom is not recognised and I have to terminate it.

Is their any other way of doing this. Could I use a lan connection ??

I am baffled and as I have spent money on the XP Pro full version I would like to use it.

Any help will be fantastic

I've been given a Portege 3440CT by a former colleague. It runs Windows 2000. She hasn't used it in more than 5 years and can't remember what her password was. I've tried logging in as Administrator with a blank password, but the password hasn't been left blank (grr) so basically I can't get past the password prompt.

Shouldn't be a problem - there are plenty of password recovery tools on the internet. I made a floppy disk using this one here: http://home.eunet.no/pnordahl/ntpasswd/ with the intention of booting from the floppy disk - there is an external Toshiba-branded USB floppy drive.

HOWEVER: the Portege obstinately refuses to do that. The boot order is set to try FDD before any other options; I tell it manually to boot from floppy; all it does is ignore me and boot Win2K from the hard disk. Would be very thankful for any ideas!

I don't have:
a CD or DVD drive for the laptop;
a network or internet connection on it, as far as I know;
the Windows recovery or install disks;
any way of booting Windows without knowing the password.

I do have:
USB flash drives / external hard disk drives;
Ubuntu installer (although on a CD, so useless without a CD drive?);
other computers.

Wiping the hard disk is a solution I'd be happy to contemplate if anyone can advise me on how to do that - there's nothing important on the laptop that needs to be recovered.

Answer:Re: Portege 3440CT - boot problems

hi abi278,
first of all: what you wanna do?

- installing a new os on this machine?
- use the installed os?

to get rid of the os administrator password:
- install the hdd in a other system and run norhdahls supertool > read every line thats given! it is able to check the registry of a other hdd than the boot device!
- make a installation of xp on a other machine, sysprep this installation and change hdd back
- install the hdd in a other system and make it bootable with dos, copy sourcefiles of desires system and run installation after reinstalling hdd to your 3440ct

maybe you need a special drive to install...

btw: nordahls disk resets the passwords *inside* your os - read the manual of this powerful tool.

I have recently purchased the above notebook which is running XP PRO. It has a problem that when turned on it takes 1 hour to load the OS. When the operating system is loaded, any keystrokes or commands can take up to 1/2 hour to acknowledge.

It has worked fine in the past.

It is not displaying any error messages.

I can not run any tests as the OS is so slow.

It has a 50GB hard drive which is unusual for this model.

I want to reload the OS but dont have original Toshiba recovery discs or CD drive, FDD.

If I format the HDD through DOS and request the laptop to boot from CD, which port does it think the CD is connected to. If it is the PCMCIA slot does this not first have to have the drivers loaded.

Does the FDD connect to the port replicator or directly to the notebook and could I boot from here.

I have an XP home disc or Windows 98SE boot floppy.

I have limited knowledge of computers, can any one help please.

Answer:Portege 3440CT Problem running slow XP PRO OS

Hi

If it has worked well in the past how should we now why it doesn?t work well anymore. Who knows what did you done.
I recommend you to:
- ?clean up? the OS
- Remove all useless applications
- Scan the HDD for viruses and spyware
- check the msconfig tool and disable all start up items that you don?t need
- use disk defragmenter and the access to the HDD will be faster

If you have a limited computer knowledge talk with your friends. Maybe some of them can help you.

Hi all,

I have an Portege 3400 that I picked up a few years ago when starting a business. The machine was put through a lot and it won't boot anymore. I want to reinstall the OS - the only catch is I don't have the original CD Rom drive that came with the unit. I have a portable CD drive that I can plug into the USB adaptor port, but when picking a boot device it doesn't even try to look for the CD drive and immediately gives me a NTLDR error.

The only option for boot device that doesn't give me that same error is when I pick Network (Lan) but I have no idea how to set up my LAN so I can use it as the source for the reinstallation of the OS.

Can anyone help me?

Thanks

Hello all :)

It seems I'm having the same problem as missred in this thread http://forums.computers.toshiba-europe.com/forums/thread.jspa?threadID=19232 (on the bottom). Unfortunatelly I can't reply there that's why I'm writing here. My laptop version is 3440CT.

My try was to make a win98 bootable HD drive with i386 directory on it, boot from this disk and start the installation with winnt.exe. OK, it works but while the files are being copied after some time it just freezes. I tried it both with one partition and i386 on active system partition and with two partitions and i386 on a separate non-system partition. I don't have FDD or CD for the laptop.

Any ideas what is wrong? Is it possible to install XP on the same disk the XP installation is started from?

Can't wait for your replies ;)

dzi

PS: My other tries were:
- complete XP installation on another computer and then switching the drive
- XP installation on another computer up to the point it first resets (after finishing of coping the installation files) and then switching the drive
both unsuccessful. I also changed the drive to another one as I suspected it's phisically damaged. Now I'm out of ideas ;)

Answer:Portege 3440CT freezes after some time while the files are being copied

> OK, it works but while the files are being copied after some time it just freezes. I tried it both with one partition and i386 on active system partition and with two partitions and i386 on a separate non-system partition
For me it sounds more as a HDD or RAM malfunction as a wrong installation procedure.

What do you think?

Can I install a standard slim cd or dvd drive into the multimedia port replicator?

That?s all I have found.

As far as I know Toshiba recommends using these modules for an upgrade:

*SDRAM 128MB (PA3034U-1M12)*

I think you could google for these single numbers and you should get a photo or all needed details about these modules?

Hi jnessi,

as far as I know you can change the brightness of the P3440 with Fn and F2 key! Otherwise ceck your settings in Power Saver tool!

If these two batteries are as old as the portege, it can be that this batteries are too old!
Otherwise your power supply electronic is damaged but I don't think so! ;-)

Answer:Portege 3440CT - 'Insert system disk ...' message occurs at the start-up

this message occurs when your HD is not recognised. Does the problem suddenly come up ??

there are several possiblities :
a: the bootsector of your HD is corrupted, than it can be solved by re-partitioning (FDISK) and re-formatting the HD
b: your HD is defective
c: your IDE-controller is defective

if possible you could take out the HD and try to read it in a USB-2,5" hd-case

I am not sure but I assume that your unit has no USB legacy support and, as far as I know, you can do it using original Toshiba FDD. Check please your BIOS settings.

I am pretty sure that you will not be able to make BIOS update using your FDD.

Hi there,
When I look for an update to the BIOS in my M400 at the Nordics version of Toshibas homepage http://nordic.computers.toshiba-europe.com - here is what I find;
On the nordics toshiba website they have the 1.50 version available for download, while the US version website I can download the newer 1.60 version. As my M400 is a Danish version I am a little unsure as to if it's ok to update my BIOS to v1.60 now that the nordics toshiba website don't have that BIOS version available.

Any thoughts and views about going ahead and installing the version 1.60 on my DK-version M400 is very welcomed.

Please don?t compare European and US notebooks models and don?t make update mix. If you have European notebook please use just the stuff available on Toshiba Europe download page.

If you don?t have problems with your unit and if operating system runs stabile, don?t do anything. It is just my advice.

Answer:Portege R700 - How to update the BIOS?

Hey,

You have to start the exe file that you can find in zip-archive that you downloaded. After this the BIOS update will start.

But before you do this update, unzip all files and close all running programs. Make also sure that you are logged in as Administrator.

I believe the EC is an important function so I would update the EC to ensure the notebook is running optimally.

What does the BIOS update for Portege Z830 (PT224 / PT225 / PT22L), version 1.80 do?

The description just says +"This BIOS Update adds increased functionality to your system."+, and I haven't been able to find anything more on Toshiba's website. The update was released 2013-05-24.

Answer:Portege Z810 and BIOS update 1.80

I presume European Portege Z810 must be similar to US Z830/Z835 (PT224x/PT225x) so I?ve checked US support page for BIOS update and here is info about BIOS updates:

+Version 1.80 - 2013-04-25+
+Optimized a BIOS setting to improve hibernation resume reliability.+

+Version 1.70 - 2012-09-12+
+Implemented the Intel specification to improve stability - updated MEBX to 7.0.0.0063.+
+EC/KBC V1.30: Improved standby stability.+
+EC/KBC V1.30: Modified the power supply error detection method.+

+Version 1.50 - 2012-02-13+
+Added a boot LOGO sequence for ZAT (GPS) models.+
+Improved: Control of TPM on Intel TXT enabled systems.+
+Implemented a fix for an issue where the BIOS password cannot be entered when configured as follows: 1. Wired USB keyboard is connected to the port replicator. Wireless USB mouse is connected to a computer USB port. 3. Computer is docked to the port replicator.+
+Implemented a fix for an issue where the BIOS password can't be entered with some USB keyboards.+

+Version 1.40 - 2011-11-15+
+Improved: Control of the TPM on Intel TXT enabled systems.+

+Version 1.30 - 2011-10-27+
+Initial production BIOS for these models.+

I hope this will help you.

Has anyone tried this new update ?
I was put off by the wording on the disclaimer.
It seems that in order to cut down on constant fan use the price to pay will be a hotter computer.
Is that going to affect the computer life time ?
Also, as it is a "stand alone" update, is it possible to undo the changes and revert to a previous version if necessary ?
Finally, is the increased heat on the base of the unit going to make it uncomfortable to work with as a tablet ?
Thanks for feed back.

Answer:Portege M400. BIOS update V 1.8

Hi

Yes I have updated my m400 to version 1.8 and No it does not run that hot im currently suing speed fan to monitor the temp and its stable at 38 degrees - with BIOS set to cooling - battery optimised, its very quite now! thats what i wanted as the fan for me was just to loud for such a small laptop. I went from 1.4 straight to 1.8 didnt do 1.7.
I still find however the power saver dosent do much in terms of the fan speed, but at least we know there was an issue and they have identified it in the BIOS release.

Hello.

I have a Portege Z835, with a battery problem: don't charge. The battery indicator says "3% connected and charging" but it don't charging the battery.

Some forums says that the solution is updating the Bios. I have a Bios update v.1.60 ready for install. When I try to install, we get the message "the battery power is not enough".

My power cord is always connected. If I disconnect the power cord, laptop is off.

Please, what can I do?

Thanks.

GB.

Answer:Portege Z835 - need help with BIOS update

To be honest I don?t think it is BIOS related issue. As far as I know battery should be charged even if the notebook is OFF so why BIOS update if battery cannot be charged at all.

For me it sounds like hardware related issue.

How old is your Portege?
Is warranty still valid?

Maybe you should contact Toshiba service and ask for help or even their opinion.

Answer:BIOS Update not possible for Portege M700

Hi

It seems that Vista OS was preinstalled on this notebook.
This means that you have installed the Win 7 system at your own hand.

The point is that BIOS update requires some essential Toshiba tools.
For example the Value Added Package is important software and should be preinstalled on the notebook.

Is VAP installed?
If not install the VAP before trying to update the BIOS.

Answer:Portege A600: cannot update to bios 3.0

Hi

The istall.exe should not crash and you should not update the BIOS in safe mode!
The Windows should be booted up and should run correctly!

Here is a Toshiba FAQ How to update BIOS:

Possibly the error code is related to corrupt windows OS or to missing some necessary Toshiba tools.
Using Win XP the Common Modules should be installed.
Using Vista or Win 7 the VAP (value added packed) should be installed.

Folks,

I have been wrestling with this device for a while now and I seem to be progressively making the situation worse.

My current issue is that I can no longer access the BIOS after changing a setting in the BIOS that related to USB emulation (or something like that). I was in the process of trying to make the device boot from a USB and pretty much twiddling with every setting to see what would work.

This one didn't. And now the device no longer responds to F2. It's like it is ignoring the keyboard. Doh!

Is there some way to roll back or re-flash the BIOS? Or another way to access it? I tried an external keyboard, to no avail.

How did I get here?

Well ... I was given this device to put back to factory condition and I could not find an obvious option that would do this, other than the Toshiba Maintenance Utility which looked hopeful. It offered to erase the partition (which at the time seemed fair enough) - BUT THAT"S all it did - so the machine just repeatedly boots, displays "Please insert system disk" and then reboots.

OK, I'm an idiot - but it does seem silly for Toshiba to offer an option that instantly bricks the machine?

Anyway, I've moved on from that problem to one that is significantly more dire. Not being able to access the BIOS means I don't have any options - unless one of you wonderful people can help me discover one.

I have since discovered that the next setting I was going to adjust - the Secure Boot setting - may have solved... Read more

Hi,

You can download another version of the same bios-update here :

http://www.csd.toshiba.com/cgi-bin/tais/su/su_sc_dtlViewDL.jsp?soid=1153942&moid=385411&rpn=P PR10U

This file contains more information about performing the update, see the readme-file
you can either do a direct update within XP or make a bootable diskette or a bootable CD

If the "direct update" within XP won't work, you will need at least an USB-fdd-drive, most of them are recognized easily by the bios ( hold F12 during start-up and choose fdd )

Answer:Re: Portege R500 - How to update BIOS on Windows 7?

Hi Roro,

Yes you have to install Windows XP to update the BIOS but my question is: Is this update necessary or just for fun? BIOS update is always a little bit risky and should only be done to solve problems. If your computer runs properly I wouldn?t make this update.

I don?t know if this update is possible on Virtual XP but I wouldn?t try it. If the update fails you need a new ROM module or mainboard. I think the BIOS update isn?t designed for Virtualization mode?

HI, I have Portege M700 - 116 with Vista Ultimate SP1. And I download a fresh BIOS (P005Bv160.exe) from [http://ru.computers.toshiba-europe.com/] version 1.60-WIN date 10/10/08. When I try to install it I have an error window said:

Unsupported product type is installed.
BIOS Package BIOS version: Ver.1.60
Current BIOS version: Ver.1.50

So my question is... WHATS WRONG?? What a product type? This BIOS update is OS independent and language independent (world wide), so i think many people with M700 will have the same problem. Is it some problems with previous version of BIOS? which I downloaded from the same site month ago. I dont understand, the BIOS installer for Windows was made to make the process easy, but it does not even work...

Answer:Portege M700 - 116 BIOS Update Error

Hi

I see you are using the Vista Ultimate.
I doubt this is an original preinstalled Vista version.

The error message: Unsupported product type is installed says that the product (software OS) which is preinstalled is not supported by BIOS. I think the error is related to the preinstalled Vista Ultimate. Possibly the BIOS cannot be updated running Vista Ultimate.

SO it would be very interesting to know if you can update the BIOS running Toshiba preinstalled OS.
Should check this!

The second one: I cannot install Windows XP on to notebook (it does not boot neither FDD-USB, nor External DVD-USB).
How can I install Windows?

Answer:Portege 3410 - How to update BIOS and install XP?

Hi

Just one question: Why do you want to update the BIOS? Is it really necessary?
I ask this because this update is always a little bit risky and you could damage the ROM module.
Anyway, have you tried to load default settings in BIOS before you start the update and install XP?

You can install XP without CD. Therefore you must copy the i386 folder on the HDD from another computer and some booting files for HDD? I think you should search a little bit with Google to find workaround for this. You should find enough! ;)

Answer:Portege R830 - BIOS 3.9 Update Error

Hi

A friend of mine has updated the BIOS from 3.7 to 3.9 without any big problems.
It could be possible that you cannot update the BIOS because of the missing or disabled TVALZ services.

Go to Control panel -> Administrative Tools icon and click services.

Here you can check if the TVALZ service is available ? if its available, enable it and then try to update the BIOS.

If this will not work, you will need to recover the notebook using Recovery HDD or Recovery disk? The BIOS update should functions using the Toshiba factory settings

May I ask where did you found the Vista Value Added Package for Portege A100?
I didn?t find this Value Added Package on the Toshiba Europe site.

There are only 3 files for Vista. One of the files is BIOS v1.60-WIN which seems to be OS-independent.

Regarding the BIOS;
You should know that the BIOS update is always risky.
If you will use wrong BIOS version or wrong BIOS update procedure you can damage the motherboard!!!
?and as you probably know the motherboard is one of the expensive notebook parts!!!
It?s not worth to trying something which can damage the notebook. You know?

Thanx for answers,

Answer:Re: Portege A600-13Y: BIOS update 1.50 to 2.00-WIN - How risky it is?

Hi

First of all you should use and download the BIOS files only from Toshiba website.
The Portege A600-13Y PPA61E is a Toshiba European notebook model and all the drivers and BIOS can be found on the Toshiba driver page.

I don?t know why you ask for the checksums or ssl certificate? the Toshiba websites are safe?
but everyone who needs the drivers or BIOS can download it?

You should only ensure that you have chosen the right notebook model and that you have downloaded the right BIOS!

But why you want to update the BIOS?
If your notebook is running troublefree then a BIOS update is not important? I follow always this advice; never change a running system.

I recently updated the BIOS on my z30c pt263e as per advice from the toshiba update application installed on my PC.

Since that update, my LAN (wireless) and bluetooth have been behaving abnormally, including:
Connecting to various wireless networks, but not being able to access the internet. In order to do so, I have to do a wireless troubleshoot in windows, which resets the wifi adapter, then it works againIf I switch between networks (say a wireless, to a hotspot wireless on my phone) it does the same thing. Will connect to the network, but not access the internet, necessitating the same resetBluetooth has started to work abnormally at the same time, including saying my bluetooth keyboard is paired, but it won't recognise any input from my keyboard.

I've since downloaded and reinstalled both the LAN and Bluetooth drivers from the Toshiba website. This has NOT fixed the problem.

notebook becomes slower after working for a while.

The notebook operating temperature usually is between 45-64 degrees.
The fan turns on at 62 degrees and turns off at 52 degrees.

Temperature seems to be pretty normal I would say but I think its not normal that the
notebook becomes slower when operating above 50 degrees.

I already opened it, it seems to be all right with the cooling unit, no dirt e.g...

Maybe I just persuade myself I and the performance is completely normal for a PIII with
866MHz??

Thank you

Answer:Portege 2010 BIOS update / operating temperature

Dear Julio

I presume you know that Linux is not supported OS and designed BIOS update is created to be performed in running Windows OS. This nice Portege is known to me and I know very well that it is not the fastest notebook and it is designed for business purposes like working with Office, e-mail communication and every other everyday activity.

Because of that answer to your latest question can be: yes you persuade yourself.

Hello Forum,

i have exactly the same problem as described here, 2 years ago:
http://forums.computers.toshiba-europe.com/forums/thread.jspa?threadID=65519

I need to update my BIOS, but i cant because the BIOS Updater tells me that Intel-TXT is enabled.
Unfortunatelly i cant disable it in my bios. Its just not selectable. The "cursor" just jumps over it.
I can only "Hide" it which doesnt help.
I have the same for the VT-d and VT-x setting in the BIOS. This is not selectable or changeable as well.

TPM isnt enabled though...
I installed the infineon suite and it tells me that i need to enable TPM in bios to use it. :-(

I have an very old Bios Version 3.1 and i read in the changelog that in V3.4 and 3.5 there were many TPM related changes....

Anyway....
Back then, a user named Paolo30 uploaded a file P007Dv360A_EC77V140.zip to 2shared.com which fixed this.
Unfortunatelly this file was deleted on 2shared.com

can someone please provide that file (or a later bios update) which fixes this?
Thanks in advance.

Answer:Need Portege R830 BIOS Update without Intel-TXT Check

Port?g? R830-10P belongs to the PT321 series so you need BIOS released for Port?g? R830 PT321

You can download such older BIOS versions from different Toshiba driver pages.
For example: http://www.toshiba-asia.com/sg/support/drivers

On this Toshiba Asia page I could find all BIOS for this Portege model.

But when it gets to the screen where it says preparing to update BIOS, up pops a message saying user is not authorised to update BIOS?

There is only 1 user account on the pc and it has admin privaleges, using WinXP sp2.

Any help would be apreciated.

Answer:User not authorised to update BIOS - Portege M100

Hi

How did you try to upgrade the BIOS? From the Windows or did you use the traditional procedure?
According to this document you should use the traditional BIOS upgrade procedure.
http://eu.computers.toshiba-europe.com/cgi-bin/ToshibaCSG/faq.jsp?z=234&service=EU&from=faq_selection&CFID=B IOS&FID=TRO0000000b07

But why you want to upgrade the BIOS?
Did you have some serious problems which the BIOS upgrade can solve?
Please note that you should upgrade the BIOS only if you have serious problems and if you know that the BIOS upgrade will solve the problems.

Hi,

I recently picked up a Portege M200 and installed (via PXE - network install) Windows 7 on it. I would like to upgrade the BIOS as it's still at the original BIOS (1.1). I downloaded and extracted the pkg and tried to install via Windows but it says my OS isn't supported. I don't have an external CD drive or FDD - how can I update the BIOS? I tried to put it on a USB drive but there doesn't seem to be an option to boot from USB.

Thanks!
Jerry

Answer:Portege M200 BIOS update running Windows 7?

Ok, I'm thinking I could use an SD card but I see it's not recognized by Windows 7 and when I put in a card, nothing happens...

Anyone know where I can find a driver for it? I do see there are 2 devices not recognized - one "Base System Device" and one "Unknown Device"...

And I see it doesn't recognize the video card either - just uses Standard VGA Graphics Adapter which seems to work fine...

Hello,

I have Protege R600 (accordint to the sticker and to the serial number, it's Portege R600-102, Part Number: PPR61E-00600CEN and I'm unable to upgrade BIOS from its current version (1.6) to the newest one available on support & download site.

Namely, according to my criteria websipe presents 3.00-WIN version, which contans zipped executable called P006Bv300.exe; when launched it displays 'This computer is not supported' message.

Which BIOS should I use?

Hi

Did you download the right BIOS version for your notebook? Are you sure?
Check this!!!

By the way: Did you exchange the mainboard or an authorized service provider?
As far as I can remember I did read a thread here about the same issue. The user reported that the update wasn?t possible after mainboard exchange. He went to ASP again and they guys did update the DMI informations. After this the update was possible!!! :)

I'm having problems with my R500, so thought I would update the BIOS.

I am directed to download bios-200803250781.zip

This contains the file P0058v160.exe

Starting that process leads to:

"install2 has encountered a problem and needs to close"

Do these BIOSes have to be installed incrementally? My r500 is an early one and currently running v1.00.

Answer:Re: Portege R500 - Bios update installer crashes

Hi

If you want to update the BIOS then you have to download the BIOS package and have to unzip it firstly.
Then execute the exe stored in the folder.

I?m not sure why the error message appears but please ensure that the Common Modules are installed on your system.

If the error will still persists then this could be a problem with the installed Windows OS and not with the BIOS software.

Hello

I have an old M800-106 (model PPM81E-00K00JEN). It is good condition and has been reliable, and I don't want to scrap it. Unfortunately the Windows based BIOS update from Toshiba's website froze during it's operation, and now the laptop won't restart.

The cost of sending it to an authorised service provider to repair is significantly more than the cost of replacing the laptop, and I'd be charged even if they didn't fix it. I'm not saying it's expensive - if someone has skills and does some work they should be paid for it, but it's not what I want to spend money on for this laptop.

Environmentally it'd bad to just chuck the laptop away/take to the recycling centre.

I could strip the motherboard out and send that away to have the BIOS chip replaced or reprogrammed, but that would be time consuming and risk me damaging it.

I would like to attempt to flash the BIOS chip, using the crisis Phoenix tools that are available online, but so far haven't found a *.rom or *.wph file to use.

Where can I get the BIOS file - to be honest any version that suits this laptop would do, it doesn't need to be the most recent one.

Any helpful advice gratefully received.

Matthew

I don't know which version was it. Then it asked me for restart, after I did the restart the device doesn't boot anymore, and I can see only a blinking orange LED, :(

Please how can I reset my old BIOS? Is it the end of my Toshiba?
I'm now in a forign country and there are noToshiba service center near to me

Please is there anyway to help me

Answer:Portege M400 - doesn't start after a BIOS update

Hi!

I think in this case you must go to an ASP. I don?t see another solution for this problem because I think the ROM module must be reflashed or the completely mainboard must be replaced.

On the Toshiba website you can search for the nearest ASP:
http://eu.computers.toshiba-europe.com => Support & Downloads => Find an authorized service provider

And if you don?t find an ASP in your country just contact an ASP in another country. I?m sure that they will try to help you.

Hi everyone!

I've got a problem.
I downloaded the BIOS Update from the Toshiba Hompage.

The update started correctly, but at the point "Flash new BIOS" at "Processing block 26 of 33" the update stucks!
I'm waiting since almost 2 hours, but nothing happens.
My screen freezes, I can't move the cursor, the clock shows the same time.... so nothing happens...

Is that normal?
I don't think so, but it's my first BIOS-update, hence I'm not really familiar with it...

Does anyone has an idea?

It would be great to get some help!
Thanks!

Answer:Portege M800 - BIOS Update stucks - Windows 7 32bit

Hi

This is different not a common BIOS update process?
The BIOS update should not take a long time.

In your case is it possible that something went wrong during the flashing process and the ROM module has not been flashed properly.
I think you are in trouble and in my opinion only the ASP technician would be able to help you.

The BIOS ROM must be flashed again using an crisis procedure and this can be done only by an ASP technician.

Hi,

I have an Old Portege A100, Model: PPA10A-0002LP, but I can't seem to find that model on any Toshiba website, closest I've seen is the " PPA10A-0002L".

I'm wanting to see if there's a BIOS update that will allow me to Boot from a USB Device.

The issue I am having is that I need to reinstall Windows, but the CD ROm cant read discs.
It does Network Booting PXE, but i'm new to this sort of thing and have absolutly no idea what to do there.

Any help would be great,

Thanks

Answer:Portege A100 PPA10A - Will BIOS update allow to boot from a USB device

Hi

Portege A100 seems to be developed only for Australian market.
As you said there is a Portege A100 PPA10A-0002L model number listed on the Toshiba Australian page but the Portege A100 PPA10A-0002LP belongs to the same series which is PPA10A.
So in my opinion the BIOS should work too.

Anyway, I doubt that the BIOS update will add any further booting options.

Usually the BIOS support the booting from CD/DVD drive, HDD, LAN and USB FDD.
It should be possible to boot from a bootable diskette using an USB FDD drive.
I doubt you would be able to boot from USB ODD since this Portege A100 supports an internal CD/DVD drive.

Could you please help me at all?
I am quite concerned about the situation

Answer:Portege 3500: system32 file missing - BIOS update?

Hi

I can?t believe that and virus can damage the BIOS!!!
I think you have updated the BIOS with the wrong procedure!!!
Did you check the document how to update the BIOS?

Anyway, the system32 fault has nothing to do with BIOS and I don?t understand why you started the BIOS update.

The Portege 3500 does not support an internal drive and therefore if you want to install the OS you have to use a compatible external PC-card drive.
I assume you use such drive for booting.

If some error messages appear during the installation procedure, you should firstly format the whole HDD and delete all partitions and then try again to boot from the recovery CD!

The latest BIOS upgrade (Ver.6.70) for my Portege Z930 12H laptop comes with the warning:

"If you are using the Windows BitLocker Drive Encryption, please temporarily suspend (or turn off) the BitLocker Drive Encryption before updating the BIOS."

Does this same warning apply to McAfee Endpoint Encryption, which is used on my laptop and which I can *not* suspend or turn off? Or can I apply the BIOS upgrade safely?

Thanks.

Answer:Portege Z930-12H - BIOS update and McAfee Endpoint Encryption?

As far as I know the Bitlocker isn?t related to McAfee Antivirus software and both security tools are not connected to each other. Bitlocker is a Microsoft Windows tool and McAfee is a 3rd party software preinstall on the unit.

Bios and EC should be updated

During the BIOS update seems following message:

+An error occurred while preparing the update environment. You have not given permission to execute the update.+

My settings:

hey,

OS: Windows 10 LTSB
Driver: complete

I tried to install the new BIOS from the drivers page on toshiba.eu.
That BIOS sadly does not work ...? Why?

Anyway... the problem i had and i wanted to have fixed is:

Bitlocker encrypted my whole drive.
it starts correctly and displays the keyboard.
GPO: Keyboard Slates (or something like that) is activated.
BUT: Touchscreen does not work. That means.. i can see the keyboard but it does not work.
thats why i wanted to update my bios but it says it is not working on my computer... well thats frustrating...
why offer the bios update when it does not work at all... or is it some sort of windows 7 only? cant imagine that tbh.

i guess the only problem is the bios but i could be wrong (z20t-b works on same settings for example)

Any help would be pretty nice. Thanks ..

I have a Toshiba M400 and i was wondering how i could reset the bios password. I disabled the finger print scanner recently becuase i decided i dont need it anymore but it still asks for a bios password which i forgot. I used to just swipe my finger and it would let me boot up and all that gravey.

If you guys know how to reset the password. Either physically or through software that would be awesome.

Or if you guys know who is the bios manufacturer for Portege M400's I could probebly give them a call and ask my self.

I could send it in but I want to avoid that and leave it as a last option.

So you have to contact the authorized Toshiba service provider in your country and only these guys are able to remove the BIOS password which you have forgotten.

Hello everyone,

I upgraded the BIOS on my Z30-B-119 laptop, and it is much worst than the original BIOS so I would like to downgrade it.
There was no way to save the original BIOS when updating and the previous BIOS is not available on the website.

Do anyone have the original BIOS and knows how to extract it?

Or maybe someone knows how to contact Toshiba technical team directly? (Seeing what they implemented in new BIOS, I have no hopes they read this forum or care about user opinions.)

If you wonder why I want to downgrade and what is wrong with it, see below for explanation.

I was convinced that the new BIOS would fix the problem with the fan, which switched on way too early, but it turned out they made it much worst! Now the fan switches on at 42?. Before it was 50?, which was already a stupid choice of Toshiba engineers, providing that the temperature rating of this CPU is 105? so they could keep the laptop quiet at least up to 60?, especially that many people complain about the fan in this model. Instead, Toshiba did the opposite and lowered the temperature even more.

Seeing how senseless choices their engineers make, I will never buy another Toshiba and will not recommend anyone buying their products. But since I already made the mistake an bought a Toshiba laptop, I hope I will be able to downgrade the BIOS or contact them to ask for an update.

Let me know if you know how to do it.

Running Ubuntu Linux on the M400 and it seems almost all BIOS versions prior 3.60 are broken because there are APIC quirk errors on the CPU. Maybe Microsoft could work around the broken APIC tables for a while but with Linux things are a bit cumbersome. Microsoft asked Toshiba for a BIOS update to deal with these issues and starting from 3.50 it seems to be fixed.

see here

Even in Linux no more APIC errors are seen. :-) But after updating to 3.60 BIOS the boot screen stays active and is preventing me to select an option for a multi boot entry (grub). When the OS is already starting the boot screen turns white at first and then gives finally control to the OS. Are others seeing this as well?

I am able to select something in my boot menu but it's more guessing because the boot screen is still on top. Very annoying this :-(

Another issue I have is that sometimes the system freezes for a couple of seconds and then goes on, nothing to be seen in logs when using Ubuntu or WXP tablet. So could be a bug in BIOS once again. Again looking for confirmation, are other experiencing this as well.

Did reflash 3.60 a couple of times but seeing this behaviour over and over again.

Although there seems to be some fan control in 3.60. It doesn't fire like a DC9 but still not as silent as the 1.80W or 2.10N BIOS versions were. Love to see these fan noise changes incorporated in 3.60 and later?

Answer:Portege M400 and 3.60 BIOS

Hi Robert

I know you will hate me but the fact is that Portege M400 has sticker near the keyboard and there is written something like ?Designed for Microsoft ??. With short words: Linux OS is not supported.

If you need some help with Linux on Toshiba notebooks please check http://newsletter.toshiba-tro.de/main/index.html

Issue about freezing is very strange and if you want to check it properly install recovery image without any additional software. In this case you will have ?factory settings? and clean preinstalled OS. If you will notice some exceptional issues you should contact authorized service partner and clarify this.

Good luck!

Hello.

I have to partition a harddrive for my beloved Portege 3440CT and I was wondering if I have to leave any space for the hibernation image.

I remember with the old Librettos you had to leave enough room at the end of the disk. Is it the same with the 3440CT? Then how much space is needed and where should I put the empty space?

Or perhaps the image is stored in a file on the first partition? Which file system should I then use? MSDOS/FAT?

Best regards

/M

Answer:Hibernation partition for 3440CT

Hi

I am not sure but I think that HDD size is 6GB. You can make two partitions (4 and 2 GB). If you have Toshiba Recovery CD install OS on first partition and the second one you can use for data saving.

On the first partition there is enough space for all data that must be written if notebook will be switched to hibernation mode. I am not sure but it can take on new machines unto 700 MB but for this old one it will be necessary less free space on HDD.

You can use FAT system.
