Loud fan noise on Tecra R850 (HDD vs SDD)

Question: Loud fan noise on Tecra R850 (HDD vs SDD)

_Computer_
*OS*: Windows 7 64bit
*Toshiba* Tecra R850
*Processor*: Core i7 2620M Sandy Bridge
*Grafik*: AMD HD6450M
*BIOS*: Ver. 3.90

Gentlemen,

in our company we use since 3 months the Toshiba Tecra notebooks.
The noise of the fan is for us to loud, you hear still the fan sitting one meter far away from the computer(no CPU load).

What helps a little bit was to change in the
Control-Center the Power-Options (Change Plan Settings -> Change advance power settings -> TOSHIBA Power Saver Settings -> Cooling Method *to* +Battery Optimized+).

But you still hear the fan which is running at 40%-45% when CPU/System temperature is 40 Celsius.

On of the guys gets last week also a new Toshiba R850 notebook, it is absolutely quiet.
The difference is that in his notebook a SSD is installed (instead of a HDD).

Could it be that the SDD make the fan noise difference? (we don't believe it).

Maybe someone has made the same experience and has a solution?

Thanks in advance

Regard,
VILSG

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Answer: Loud fan noise on Tecra R850 (HDD vs SDD)

Hi,

I've a R840-16J. Last week I replaced the original Seagate Momentus 500GB 7200.4 HDD for a Plextor M5Pro 512GB SSD.

Yes it is true, now is much more quiet and...there's no vibration at all.

With the HDD I could feel all the computer vibrating in the palm of my hand!!!! No there's a quiet no vibration laptop!

And, believe it or not, one of the reasons to go the ssd way (well, not the main reason) was precisely the noise and vibration of the 7200 rpm internal hdd.

Cheers,
paulo

Hi. I got Tecra R850-520e for 4 months. from the begining I have the same problem - loud fan but no cpu load (about 2-4%) using win7 and win8 64bit

I tried to change windows profile to optimized or to power saver. but i still get the fan to noise. I upgrade the bios to 3.90. I re-checked windows 8. and still the fun ist loud. when no cpu is used.

Notebook is cool - so I don't know where is the problem. probably this is bad driver for ACPI or for temperature measuring. I tried to change the notebook position - and I found two metal plate on the bottom.

I think it is a temp measure sensors. when I rotate the notebook, and the plates are "on air", not touched by any material - the fan is going to slow down in minutes.

Could somebody tell if any speed fun will work ? or maybe Toshiba will update the bios or drivers for it finally ?
The comfort for business laptop is very bad. I have SDD - and this is limited too. I didn;t supposed that Toshiba will sell such a sh.....

Could anybody have some drivers or setting that will slow down the fan in windows 64bit ?

T.

Answer:Tecra R850-520E - loud fan - no cpu load - Win7 and Win8 64bit

Hi

You need to adjust the Windows Power Plane settings in order to improve the cooling system.

<Setting Method>
Changes in Operating System:
Control Panel --> Power Options --> Change plan settings --> Change advanced power settings --> TOSHIBA Power Saver Settings --> Cooling Method

Changes in Bios (Power Management):
Intel Turbo boost Technology

Changes in Operating System:
TOSHIBA HW Setup --> CPU Frequency mode

Try this settings:
Power plane (Toshiba power saver) Battery optimized
Intel Turbo Boost technology (BIOS) - Disable
CPU frequency ? Always low

From my experience this should reduce the noise.

Hi

On a Tecra R850, i can't use the FN key. I install all driver from toshiba and they does'nt work

Help

Thanks

Answer:Tecra R850 with Windows WXP - can't use the FN key

Hello

The whole thing is a bit complicated with WXP and it is important to install all stuff in right installation order. After some basic drivers like chipset, display, sound you should install common modules at first and continue with Toshiba specific tools and utilities like controls, display device, power saver and so on.

Can you use any FN key combination or none of them is working?

Despite the claims that the R850 (with Radeon graphics) will do 4 displays, the most I can manage is 2. I'm trying to connect 2 external LCD monitors and still use notebook as another screen (3 in total).

I've done a lot of searching and although I can find plenty of people having the same problem, I cannot find an answer. I've tried updating the driver although that caused more problems than it solved. I am using W7.

Can someone tell me how to use more than 2 displays on a Tecra R850?

Thanks.

Answer:What can't I run more than 2 displays on my Tecra R850?

In such case you will need to use an external device like Dynadock

There are different models on the market? check some which would be the best solution for you..

Today my son try to clean his computer but hi delete all disc C and his computer don't have nothing. What can i do?

I think intall a version of windows and the drivers but where are the drivers?. If some one have a better idea pleas tell me.

Sorry for my english

Answer:Deleted all on my Tecra R850

I don't know which OS have you use and how your Tecra was configured but if possible reinstall original recovery image. If possible make HDD recovery installation as described on http://aps2.toshiba-tro.de/kb0/HTD1303440001R01.htm

You can also use recovery disc if you have created it in the past. After doing this you will have clean preinstalled OS. Please check if this works for you. If not let us know.

Answer:Tecra R850 - 147 - Question about RAM

Remove the RAM cover and check which modules are inside. It is fixed with two screws.
You don?t need more than two minutes to find out who is RAM manufacturer.

I recently brought +Logitech Stereo Headset H110+ for my +Toshiba Tecra R850-151+. I used a +3.5mm 4 Pin to 2x 3 Pin 3.5mm Headset Splitter Adapter+ to connect it.

The Headset works correctly as I tried them with another computer.
And with my Tecra R850 the earphones works correctly.

Now, the problem is that the microphone is not recognised with the sufficient volume.
The speech recognition works halfway as the green bar goes up very slightly when I talk through the headset but not enough to recognise my voice. In advanced options I tried to edit the microphone properties increasing the +Microphone level+ up to 100 and +Amplification level+ up +30.0 dB but still the headset did not recognise correctly my speech.

If someone could help me I would appreciate.

Answer:Headset mic low volume on Tecra R850-151

Hi

Did you already check the Realtek HD audio manager which can be found in control panel?
There are different tabs like Speakers or Microphone.

I recommend you to check microphone tab where you could find different settings like playback level and recording level.

You can also enable the noise suppression which should be also part of the mic

Good afternoon,

I am contacting you to realizaros a technical question regarding a Toshiba Tecra R850-151 model, part no PT525E 8b112605h and serial number.

I explain the scenario,

I have installed the laptop in a docking station, this one monitor, keyboard and mouse, I have installed the driver downloaded from your site for this laptop model and operating system and I have configured in the control panel Intel Graphics and Multimedia screen operating mode displays clones, both displays in 800x600 resolution and respect me as an administrator entering the operating mode of the screen and resolution, the bug is when I access the system with another user without administrative privileges, in this case the resolution does not respect me and sometimes not the operating mode of the screens.

I beg facilit?is a solution to this issue because it is essential that resolution on both screens, and the problem is that entering the system with another user respects me when I agreed resolution specically as administrator and if I change the theme of the screens or judgment as a user when I turn off the computer and turn on again you ignore the specically. By the way, I installed the OS twice now and the error persists and I installed the latest driver you have on the Web and previous to that as well and still the same.

A greeting.

Hi

Did you notice this if you would use the Toshiba preinstalled image?

you are preety cool. Send some screen shot and want to have answer for your problem but without any relevant info in your posting.

For instance it will be interesting to know which operating system do you use.
Do you use original OS that you got with your notebook?

When the BSOD is shown? At the stat-up or later when OS is loaded?
Have you tried to do anything about that?

A few more sentences about this issue can be very useful.

Hello,

I am thinking of buying a Tecra R850-1D8 to connect it to a Samsung LS27A850DS monitor (2560x1440 px). Both the laptop and the monitor have a DisplayPort, and if I am not mistaken, the Tecra R850 uses the QM67 Express chipset which should support resolutions up to 2560x1600.

HOwever, the Tecra R850 specifications specify a maximum resolution of 2048 x 1536 for the external monitor, which puzzles me. Can anyone tell me if the R850 supports an external 2560x1440 display via DisplayPort?

Thanks already!

Answer:DisplayPort at 2560x1440? (Tecra R850)

Hello

You can download user?s manuals and open page 111 to find info about DisplayPort but unfortunately there is no table with supported resolutions.

It is listed for HDMI only.
Try to talk with your local leader. Maybe they have one in show room and you can test it.

Hi,

I've recently purchased a 2nd hand Toshiba Tecra R850.

Is it normal for the laptop to start loading Windows, on opening the lid?

I always perform a proper shutdown when I will not be using the laptop - and I have always expected to press the on button to start it.

So is this normal for the laptop to start when I open the lid? Is there an override?

thanks
Brian

Answer:Tecra R850 starts when opening lid

I can answer this myself. I went in to the BIOS and there is an option for the laptop to automatically start up on opening the lid. I set this to Disabled.

Hi.

I bought R850 with SSD.
The bad thing is that SSD 256gb installed is limited to SATA II with transfer up to 300/mb. I read that Sandy Bridge Supports SATA III which covers 600/mb.

Is somebody successfuly installed better SSD disk capable with SATA3?

I tried Sisoft Sandra and it reported that SSD SATA is II, the same for Motherboard. The HwINFO reported that chipset is capable with SATA 3. The Everest shows only SSD data with SATA 2.

Is the bios blocked for higher transfers ? I got 180mb/s read, 150 mb/write - which is 3x worse than normal SATA 3 256gb SSD harddisks.

Can anybody help me and tell - if it is matter of R850 bios ? or just only the old Toshiba SSD firmware ? if I buy better SSD with SATA3 - will it fully support higher speed ?

Best Regards
Tomi2012

Answer:Tecra R850 - SSD support for SATA III 6.0GB

Hi

I?m not sure what R850-xxx notebook you have but as far as I know this series is equipped with one for the Intel (Sandy Bridge) i3/i5/i7 CPUs.
Also the notebook supports either Intel Cougar Point QM67 (AMT model) or HM65 (Non-AMT model). Both supports SATA II (3Gb/s) and SATA III (6Gb/s)

But for example if the host interface is 300MB/s you get sustained Data Read : Max 250MB/s and sustaine Data Write : Max 160MB/s

Answer:Tecra R850-1EP: Cannot use Fingerprint on logon Windows 8.1

Hi

To be honest, I don?t know exactly what?s going wrong with the fingerprint procedure but I guess this can be related to wrong update to Win 8.1
Probably you did not follow exactly the update procedure which was recommended by Toshiba.

Here you can find the Update to Windows 8.1 Toshiba EU website:
http://www.toshiba.eu/innovation/generic/windows8_1-message/

and here you can find the [Step-by-Step Instructions to update to Windows 8.1 |http://www.toshiba.eu/innovation/generic/windows8_1-upgrade-stepbystep/]

You have to follow exactly these steps in order to get the notebook working properly.

Therefore I recommend you to set the notebook back to factory settings and to repeat the whole update process once again following the +Step-by-Step Instructions+

According notebook specification your Tecra notebook was delivered with Windows 7 Professional 64 bit operating system.
I hope you have created recovery DVD using preinstalled Toshiba recovery disc creator tool.
This tool will just create bootable recovery installation disc with original version and it should be 64bit so I don't understand how 32bit can be installed on your machine.

When you start this recovery installation disc there is no option to choose between 32 and 64bit OS, right?

Good Day,

So I've had my R850 for a few years now and it's never given me a moments trouble. However, on Monday a silica bead managed find it's way in to the headphone jack. This happened due to an unnoticed broken silica sachet in my laptop backpack, and putting the laptop into the backpack, one of the beads was pushed into the jack.

The intruder was not noticed until I tried to plug in my headphones, unfortunately, forcing the bead in further. Be that as it may, I have managed to free the bead but I fear that there is now permanent damage. When I plug in the headphones, the speakers do not cut out. Audio does play through headphones, but the quality is very poor compared to what it used to be. So I am not sure if perhaps the bead short circuited something doing lasting damage, or if it just pushed a contact out of the way inside the jack, which is now not engaging with the headphone plug?

Is there anything I try in an effort to resolve this? I really can't afford huge costs to have the plug replaced.

Thanks,
Bruce.

After shutting down my Tecra R850-117 it will automatically restart after exactly 5 minutes.

This is unwanted behavior because it drains the battery while I'm not using the laptop and it could also damage the disk carrying it around while running...

Anyone knows what could cause this behavior and how I can stop it? The laptop is 6 months old and I'm only noticing this behavior since the last few weeks. I already noticed the battery would be drained after not using it for a few days (probably due to the same issue?), but never before noticed the unwanted restarts...

Thanks a lot in advance for any useful advice.

Hello,
I would appreciate some thoughts on the problem.

The problem:
The battery is not being charged. The icon in System Tray says that the battery is "plugged in" but is "not charging", and "Consider changing your battery".
Something similar to:
https://bd23.https.cdn.softlayer.net/80BD23/142.4.51.106/images/consider-replacing-your-battery.png
Also, the battery charging indicator is turned off

What happened:
I was using the computer on the battery. While using it, the message appeared that the battery is at critical 3% and computer suddenly shutdown (or went to sleep/hibernation). It is possible that the battery was empty since I was not charging it for 2 days. What was strange is that I did not get the message that the battery is at 7%, which is normal warning I get.
The next day, I plugged in the power cable, started computer. While booting, computer asked do I want to start in "Safe mode" or "Normal". I selected "Normal".
Then I noticed the problem described above.

The history:
Nothing in particular. Notebook is less than 2 year old. Battery was holding 6 hours, now dropped to some 4 hours, but had no previous problems. No power surges, did not drop the computer, etc....

Observations:
- The computer works without battery, only on power cable.
- The computer does not react if I put only battery, without power cable, although it says that battery has 9%. (it said there is 3% before the ini... Read more

Answer:Tecra R850, battery "plugged in, not charging"

On the picture an information is shown: ?consider replacing your battery?. This would mean that the battery is somehow faulty.

I guess you would need to replace the battery using, new original good tested one.

I don?t thins that there is some kind of software problem since you have already tried the factory reset and notebook recovery. In case of software problems, this procedure should solve all ?software related? issues. But it didn?t.

Hello,

My Tecra R850-1CL (with Ericsson 3G modem) has 2 led indicators for network : a yellow LED for WiFi, and a blue LED for 3G.

Under Windows 7 64-bit, everything was working OK, and Fn+F8 allowed to switch on or off WiFi and 3G.

Since I upgraded to Windows 8, Fn-F8 does only switch to plane mode, yellow Wifi indicator is always on even in plane mode, and blue 3G indicator is almost always on, even when 3G is not connected or when adapter is disabled.

I have done W8 upgrade with Toshiba upgrade utilities, and computer is up to date (BIOS and Drivers).

Hi,

I own a Tecra R850 with the ATI HD 6450M, and every now and again it hangs and BSOD appears.
I've observed that mainly it happens when reproducing flash videos.
After checking System Events I've discovered it's a problem with the display card driver.

The event system says that may be a solution [here|http://wer.microsoft.com/Responses/Response.aspx/21682/en/5.1.2600.0.00000000.9.9?SGD=13feb1cd-4c8b-4c3a-aeee-ca4ca2c99729]

This webpage indicates that it is a bug in the driver and I must upgrade to the latest driver to solve de problem, and it provides a link to ATI webpage.

I've downloaded the drivers from ATI webpage and the installation program says that it is not compatible with Toshiba laptops.
I've checked Toshiba webpage and I already have the latest (and unique) driver for my display card.

As it appears on the webpage it's a driver bug, but Toshiba seems not to have released any update in the driver despite Ati has...

Any one can help?

Thanks,
Jose.

Answer:Tecra R850 - Display driver problem - BSOD

Hi Jose

Do you use original Toshiba preinstalled Windows or your own version?
Original display driver included in original recovery image is tested so you should not have some troubles with basic stuff like playing flash videos.

Since when have you noticed this issue? Can you give us one example when this happen?
Have you installed some updates?
To be honest I cannot imagine this issue is from the first day of usage.

My Tecra R850-11U has 8GB (2x 4GB) memory inside. I am running W7 professional 64bit and the machine only shows 4GB as memory.

I allready upgraded the bios, but the bios also shows 4GB. I have 2 banks of original samsung memory in it; changed one to an kingston bank but it still doesn't show more than 4GB.

How can i solve this problem?? I like full memory

Answer:Tecra R850-11U doesn't recognise full memory

The chipset supports 8GB RAM so you should be able to use the 8GB.
But if the BIOS does not recognize the 8GB RAM then one of the modules could be faulty or not compatible with another module.

This is only and one plausible explanation for me

I want to connect my laptop to a DVI screen and it only has a DisplayPort (and VGA but I do want to get the full resolution) port.
So I need an adapter.
Can I use a passive adapter or do I need to buy an active?

Answer:Tecra R850-117: Need info about Display Port to DVI adapter

Hi

As far as I know the DisplayPort on the left side complies to the V1.1a standard.
This means that the DispplayPort is compatible with DVI and HDMI standards so you can use an DisplayPort to DVI or HDMI adapter.

So you could use something like that:

Hey Guys I have a weird bug with a clients Toshiba Tecra R850 notebook with the port replicator. It's about 8months old.

Almost each morning when the client connects the laptop to the port replicator and powers on and boots to the Windows 7 desktop it doesn't create a "LAN" connection (external monitor & USB work through the port replicator though).

I have to get the client to power off the laptop, unplug it from the port replicator, unplug the power from the port replicator and then plug everything back in and turn the laptop back on.

Here is what I have ruled out so far:
Port replicator: I have replaced the port replicator with another users unit (exact same model), same issue.
Connected LAN directly: If I connect the LAN directly (i.e. completely remove the port replicator) I get no issues with LAN/Internet connection.

Here is the part number of the laptop and the dock:
Tecra R850: PT520A-01N003
Port Replicator II: PA3916A-1PRP

Any ideas? Could this be a faulty docking port on the laptop?

Kind Regards
Aaron

Answer:Tecra R850 - Port Replicator problem - no lan on startup

Hi

Don?t think its faulty docking port because in such case other Port Replicator ports would not function too?

I think its system issue? did you test the port replicator with fresh recovered system?
Would be definitely worth a try?

Hello all

I need help with some issue:
My system says that I have 2,66GB RAM available for applications, services etc. The rest of it (between 1,1 and 1,3 GB RAM) is shared and reserved for the graphic card. I searched for a way to reduce it via BIOS (how it normally works), tried an update for the bios hopping that it would add this feature. But that wasn't the case.

I can't understand why Toshiba doesn't allow his customers to modifity this setting!
I can understand to put such a setting by default, but also giving an option for advanced users to modifiy this setting.

2,66GB RAM are not very much and I often need more than that... 500MB more RAM for sys would be really nice.
And 64bit OSs are currently not supported in our company.

So does anyone know a way to reduce the shared memory to e.g. 500MB?

My system specs:

Windows 7 Pro SP1 (32bit)
Modell: TECRA R850
Serialno.: 7B042670H
Partno.: PT525E-03E00KGR

Thanks in advanced for your answers!

Answer:Tecra R850 - How can I reduce the shared memory of the graphic card?

As far as I know shared memory works automatically and notebook user cannot control it.
It is nothing new and the same principle is on all Toshiba notebooks.

Sorry but there is nothing to do about it.

I factory reset my laptop yesterday and every since the internal mic only works when nothing is plugging into the jack socket, including headphones without a mic and speakers. This was never a problem before the factory reset and i could plug headphones in to hear people and could use the mic to talk.. now i can only talk to people when nothing is plugged in meaning i have to hear people out of the laptop speakers..

Any ideas guys? I dont want to have to buy new headphones :/

Cheers

Answer:Tecra R850 - Internal mic doesn't work when headphones are plugged in

Check settings in sound properties (playback and recording devices).
Be sure Microphone is listed and enabled in recording devices.

Please check all this and send some feedback.

I have two Toshiba notebooks and everything works perfectly so I don't see some reason why it should not work on your Tecra too.

Hello

Is it possible to have the resolution in vga as 1280-1024 in external output or using the display port?
I have just seen the 1024 / 768 in the resolution 4/3 format

Maybe in the catalyst graphic card i have look in it without any success

All the resolution for output is in the 16/9 format

Thanks for any help

Answer:Tecra R850-1HU output VGA external in 1280-1024 (4/3 format)

Hi

The display port supports max 2560 x 1600 /32bit resolution.
But the available external resolution depends on the external monitor and the graphic card driver.
If both would support the favorite resolution (1024 / 768 ), you should be able to choose this?

I got a R850 and complete random the laptop lockups. When it locks up fans begin to spin full speed and windows is locked up. I need to poweroff the laptop and start again.

This can happen three times on a evening, but it can also occur only ones a week.

Its complete random.

Answer:Tecra R850 - sometimes OS stuclocks-up, fans spin on full speed

On this virtual way it is not easy to say what happen exactly.
Every new notebook is delivered with clean preinstalled OS and something like this should not happen. Later when you start to install updates or own applications it can happen that some background application ?blocks? the system.

In my opinion either you must check preinstalled stuff, processes that run in the background to see which one can be responsible for this, or you must install recovery image again and check how it works with ?factory settings?.

I tested a external UMTS USB-Card, it worked without any Problems.
So it's very strange, that there are so much Notebook affected with this Problem. Is there any bug or Problem know?
How can I save the Problem? It's not comfortable!

i have try to put the sata bios in ahci or compatible with the same problem

I have try a lot of times with the same problem and on different machine with same problem

The laptop is returned to Toshiba (they have installed win xp from an original cd from microsoft, so i need activation and i have to do this on 20 laptops and of course not the soft from toshiba cd creator, win dvd...)

I have recontact toshiba , i am not sure they understand what i want, i have received a new restore dvd with the same problem

If anyone has a solution i will be very happy

maybe something to change in the bios but i don't know what ?

Thanks for any help

Answer:Re: Blue screen on Tecra R850-1HU installing Win XP from Recovery disk

Generally speaking original Toshiba recovery image is tested and should work properly on certain notebook model. if there is some problem with original recovery you should clarify this with Toshiba directly.
As far as I know BIOS should be set to default settings and nothing must be changed in BIOS settings when you want to use recovery image.

All I can imagine is that there is something wrong in image itself. In the past I had similar problem with old Portege 2000.

Fact is: if you want to use original image you must clarify this with Toshiba. Toshiba must offer well working recovery image. If you want to use own WXP then you must buy licence for this. Toshiba has nothing to do with OS activation.
>... i have to do this on 20 laptops and of course not the soft from toshiba cd >creator, win dvd...)
How to understand this?
You want to buy one recovery disc and install it on 20 absolutely identical Tecra notebooks?

Dear guys,

I have a Tecra R850 laptop (the graphic card is an AMD Radeon HD 6450M) with a PA3916A-1PRP port replicator.

I already have a 23" running at 1920x1080 connected via HDMI.
I would like to buy a 27" to run it at 2560 x 1440.

So my ideal configuration would be the 27" at 2560 as main monitor and the 23" at 1920 as second monitor. One monitor (the 23") has Display Port, DVI and VGA input, the other one has DVI, Display Port 1.2, Mini Display Port 1.2, HDMI.

Is it possible to connect them as I wish (I would love to avoid the use of VGA)?
Do I need other stuff (another docking for example) to accomplish that?

Any idea is good for me!

Thanks a lot

mario

Answer:Tecra R850 with 27" display at 2560 x 1440 and 23" display at 1920x1080

Hi

Generally speaking you may be able to connect two external monitors at a time depending on your notebook model.

In user manual of Tecra R850 you can read that when the Toshiba HI-Speed Port Replicator II is connected to the notebook, you cannot use _notebook?s_ external RGB (VGA) port.
This port will not work.

Furthermore you cannot use port replicator?s HDMI port and Display Port at the same time.
The hi-speed port replicator II contains a slider which can be moved to choose either the HDMI port or Display Port.

So it seems that you have one option to connect two externa monitors: (VGA + HDMI)
one monitor to HDMI/Display port and other to VGA/RGB port (port replicator's RGB port)

Another option to connect two external monitors at the same time, you should use another docking solution like for example Dynadock U3. It supports an HDMI and DVI port which can be used at the same time.

Hi everybody, I would like some help!

I recently bought a new fan to help with cooling as the summer approaches. My new fan replaces my old chassis fan but is plugged in slightly differently as it is plugged into the 3 pin mother board connector (the old one was plugged into the molex and is now positioned as an intake fan at the front).

My problem is that since I've installed the new fan my computer is actually louder than before, Everest tells me that the revs for the new fan are 5114 rpm as I type this so it's clearly working too hard. I think it's working too hard because my processor fan is only idling by comparison at 1705 rpm. Which temperature does the chassis fan use to control it's speed and why has my CPU fan suddenly become lazy since I installed the new fan? Is there anything I can do to make the CPU fan work harder and take some of the burden off of the chassis fan?

Many thanks for any help!

Hello. Any suggestions on how I can easily cut down on my fan noise? It sounds like there is a lawn mower in here. Please tell me I can just buy a new fan for my processor... or maybe it's the PSU that's so loud. Thanks!

Answer:Fan Noise too loud

Google SpeedFan.

It allows you to vary the speed of your internal fans. Mess around with it til you get a stable, low temperature and desired noise output.

Or, you could just buy new fans.

The fan runs at full to extract the heat when playing. About the only thing that you can do is to open it up and clean out any dust that you can see.

Question: A Very Loud Noise

I was working in the computer area one night. Of four computers, I was using two, one had been shut down for the night, and the last had been left on, but was unused.Suddenly the room was filled with a very loud noise. We are talking quite loud, almost like a fire alarm - uncomfortably loud to the ears. My first thought was an alarm on the UPS. I checked it, and it was fine. Then I thought maybe a fan bearing gone bad on one of the computers. I shut down the one not being used. Nothing. So then in spite of losing work, I felt it urgent enough to immediately shut down the two computers I was using. Nothing. So my next thought was fans in the room. Shut them down - nothing. Then I thought maybe the lights. Nothing. So my final thing was to unplug the computer that was already shut off - Bingo! What a surprise. I wasn't sure if the noise was from the computer or from the surge protector it was plugged into, so I ran an extension cord across the room. It ran fine about 3 days and then the noise came again, not quite as loud this time, but still loud.So I am thinking power supply or motherboard. The frequency and texture of the sound is the same as the squeal you get from the computer when you disconnect the power and the electricity drains from the system, except that that sound is mildly soft, but it gives you an idea of the nature of the sound. So I'm thinking maybe the motherboard is alarming me about something, but why so loud? And why continuous and won't go of... Read more

Hi,

I recently upgraded the ram in my pc from 1.5gb to 2.5gb as it seemed to be getting pretty slow. I was expecting a pretty big jump in performance but it doesn't seem to have happened.

The pc can sometimes be faster than it was and sometimes it really drags. There is also an intermittent loud noise which i believe is coming from the fan and when this happens the pc is slow.

I took out the fan and cleaned all the dust from it but this noise still starts every couple of minutes and the pc becomes slow.

Any ideas?

Answer:Loud Noise from PC. Don't think it is the HDD

Two things to consider...
The amount of memory doesn't have much to do with speed unless some process can specifically use that extra memory. You can to more things well, but not necessarily more rapidly.

You system will utilize all memory at the speed of the slowest module. If you have some memory that is value ram or other inexpensive ram, the timings could be significantly different than the best brands and models.

Your system only uses what memory it needs, not what you want it to use. As long as the RAM meets the requirements of the motherboard, it will not protest.

If you want some programs to run at optimum performance levels, all memory must be identical. It is wise to buy matched sets of RAM from the same manufacturer at the same time to get the ultimate performance. Top memory is already sold in matched sets in the same plastic wrap. Otherwise, you have to look at the timings and other information posted on the package or the label.

Hello, I've been searching around for a possible solution to this problem, but didn't find anything major dusts trapped within the fan housing.  The noise is especially pronounced when I plug in the AC, not so much when I'm using the battery.  I downloaded fanspeed to monitor my pc's temperature, and found it to exceed 180 degrees F when running memory intensive programs, sometimes staying at around 200 degree F, in short I can feel alot of heat being emittied through the keypad. The noise is annoying and I believe the fan to be the main culprit, however I read somewhere that an AC malfunction is a possibility.  The laptop is at factory settings, although I did uninstall lenovo power management to fix an exisiting problem before.  Does anyone have inputs?

I am having SL400 Thinkpad. for the past few days it is acting weirdly. My hard disk is making lot of noise. Initially I thought it is coming from CPU fan. But when I observed ThinkVantage active protection - It is displaying auto repetitive shocks.  This sound is just too loud. I cannot hear anything if I switch on my laptop.  Now, my laptop performance become very slow even though I am having Core2Duo with 4GB RAM. My laptop is one yr old and it's warranty is over in April. OS is Vista.  Appreciate if anyone has suggestions to fix this problem.

Answer:SL400 - HDD Loud Noise

if it is making lot of loud noise, then it could be a sign of bearing is worn out on the hdd. Try to do a hdd health check through the BIOS menu, and see whether you have any errors on the hdd.

I think Lenovo allows you to extend warranty provided that the day of renewal is within 30 days of the warranty expiration. You should call them up and see if that is possible.

Aftermarket hdd is pretty cheap too, a 500 gig one is around 80 or 90 USD on newegg.com. If you buy the WD and Seagate brand, there is a manufacturer provided copy of the Acronis Trueimage where you can transfer the entire hdd image from the old hdd to the new hdd.

First guess would be that your system is not getting enough love from your power supply.

Go here: http://www.extreme.outervision.com/ and calculate how much your system needs, then open up your case and look at the sticker on your PSU to see how many watts it is putting out.

I built my own pc about a year ago. Lately whenever I boot the machine up it makes this weird buzzing, clicking noise. It generally stops after it gets fully booted up. Then it is quiet, but sometimes it will start making a buzzing noise after it has been on for awhile (I leave it on all the time). At first I was worried it might be the hard drive, but I have not had any real trouble with the machine. I figured if it were the hard drive, it probably would have died by now or I'd have some serious issues. So, what do you think? It would have to be the power supply or one of the internal fans right? Should I replace my 400 watt power supply?

Thanks!

Answer:PC making loud noise, could it be the PS or something else??

Its probably a fan. I would take it out and take a look at it and put it back. You first have to find out wich fan it is.

I have had similar problems. I used to hit the fan a few times wih a screwdriver and it fixed the problem. I am not recommending it though. It was my PSU fan. Maybe u should clean it. Be careful.

Hello, So this started happening when I was moving the laptop one day (when it was on) the fan suddenly got very loud and the whole laptop was vibrating, it sounded like the fan was touching something while it spins which made the vibrating and loud noise, it sounds exactly like this https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QkCLubSukzI I fixed it by restarting the laptop (sleep works too, seems like whatever makes the fan stop) but now it randomly happens, the normal noise of the fan has changed and it sometimes gets that loud again as showed in the video and then I have to restart to fix it. I've tried to open the laptop but some screws were too hard and stuck lol so I gave up. and I've cleaned the vents from dust.

Question: Loud Revving Noise

I am running Windows XP on a Dell computer that is about 3 years old. Lately, and more frequently, the computer will all of a sudden make noises like a car engine revving up. Sometimes it just lasts a few minutes and sometimes it just gets louder and louder and lasts a long time. I have DSL and thus my computer is always on. I have virus protection and nothing comes up on the scan. When this happens, I normally have nothing going on, except perhaps one Internet Explorer Window open.

Is this a sound of doom and gloom to come? What could be causing this? Should I be concerned?

Thanks,

Answer:Loud Revving Noise

#1. Isolate the cause.
- Open the case and look at the fans particularily. Many systems today can control the speed of the fan and as the system heats up the fans spin faster. Older fans may complain and you'll hear a noise not unlike airplanes flying overhead.

If it's a regular 80 cm or 120 cm fan then a replacement is quick and easy. If it's a chipset or CPU fan, then replacement will require first determining what you need and then where you can find it. Most computer specialists will carry a variety of fans and parts, but make sure to double check your requirements before purchasing. Make sure if you replace your CPU fan/cooler that it will FIT.

Good luck,

The sound is not coming from the speakers. It is coming from inside the laptop.

Answer:Loud Noise while closing lid

Hi Arun,Thanks for the response.I would suggest you to enable the audio device and uninstall the audio driver. Then restart the system and Windows would automatically try to install the sound driver. Run the Windows Audio Playback Diagnose and Repair from the below mentioned MS FIX-IT http://support.microsoft.com/mats/AudioPlayback/ You may also run the hardware diagnostics to check if there is a hardware failure. To run the diagnostics you can get the instructions from the online videos available on the following link: http://dell.to/Sm161v Once you open the above page, under the option, “All Videos” select Dell Tools & Services >> Then select Dell Support Center–PC Checkup/Offline Diagnostics Please find the screenshot below:1. Click Start, All Programs, Dell, Dell Support Center and Launch PC Checkup. 2. Click the PC Checkup button and then click Run Custom Scan. Note: If the hardware is detected but the driver is not installed, instead of Run Test, the field will read Disabled. In the given list, click to select the script or component test desired and follow the onscreen prompts to complete the diagnostic. Please reply with the findings. Thanks & Regards Vishal S #iworkfordell

Well a lenovo, used for a year and a buzzing loud crackling fan noise problem... Aren't we surprised!!!Useless to ask for a BIOS update for a essential product, they didn't care to give one for a thinkpad. Here's the problem though...The laptop makes a buzzing fan noise. That is not a fan running at full speed. This noise is more like a buzz of a large fluoroscent tube. And will stop, well, if you tap it, knock it, or use your acquired accupressure massage tricks for the revered Lenovo products. Problem is it will reappear after a few minutes or seconds depending on your luck. Lenovo don't seem to provide any off shelf fans at least in India for the product. Even the cpu temp seem to be rising. It has touched 70C for i53210m.(room temp at 26C, load 100% for arnd 30 sec, avg load 6%)My question is with the temperature on the higher side, and the fact that I cannot feel much air from the fan, how do I know the gurgarating buzzing loud fan is actually working or needs to be changed?

Answer:G580 loud fan noise

Hi,

It might just need a cleaning.  Here's your Hardware Maintenance Manual .  That should show you how to gain access to it.

win xp, asus p5q-e onboard soundcard

When some sound is playing (game, video) every 30 seconds there is some "static" noise. It sounds as looking up different stations on a old radio.

I don't know if this is hardware or software problem. No new hardware is added. I dont have any other loudspeakers to test.

A while ago I had this problem as well but somehow it disappeared. the noise is more often when surfing on internet or only navigating in windows.

Once in a while, my XP loads up without sound.
Most often, I do have sound.
But, when it loads with sound I get a loud banging noise - sometimes one sometimes two, then everytjhing is OK.
Would I ever be able to get it loading without the banging noise(s)?
Much obliged!

Answer:Loud noise, once or twice at start-up.

Obviously, there is a problem. I have no idea what the "banging noise" could be. "Banging" would seem to indicate something is loose and bouncing around in the case.

Question: Loud buzzing noise

Hello!

I have a year-old Lenovo G500 laptop, and recently it started doing this loud, buzzing sound quite often, even when there's only one program opened. I checked CPU and disk usage the first few times it happened, but they're fairly low. I'm not really tech-savvy, so I'm not exactly sure if the sound is coming from a fan or is it HDD. I do know for sure that the fan isn't dusty, when I brought it to a tech shop they told me there's no need for a cleaning. I'm sorry if the question is stupid, but the frequent loud sound makes me worried and I can't be sure if it's just laptop's normal sound or not. Any help appreciated.

Answer:Loud buzzing noise

Can be coming from a fan, be first thought even if not dirty can be going bad, something is loose and rubbing on it, also can be power supply which also have fans and or the hard drive. Know which side hard drive is on on laptop. This is not coming from the speakers ? How is it when it is plugged in, does this only happen on a battery ?

I am running windows 7 on a Dell desktop computer. It has started making a very annoying and loud squealing noise. I have cleaned the dust from inside thinking it may be overheating. I also wiggled the boards to make sure all were seated good. Does anyone have an idea what could be causing this and how to stop it? Thanks

Answer:Loud Squealing Noise

Try disconnecting any case fans one at a time and see if the noise stops.......if it does then you have a fan that is on it's way out......

So I recently got a new computer about 1 month ago and the microphone didn't seem to work. When I got it to work there was this really loud annoying sound that had beeps and echos in it, kind of hard to explain. I have turned off the option of "Listen to this device" in the audio control panel and haven't found any further fixed for this issue I wondered if anyone could help me :) The headset I use is the Logitech G230.
Ty in advance.

Answer:Loud noise when using microphone.

You have done what was needed by turning off "listen to this device".
If this is not turned off the sound coming from the speakers is picked up by the microphone and then goes round and round usually referred to as feedback.

Recently, I upgraded my graphic card. From FX5200 to 6600GT. And I got a new Power Supply. The power suply i got was 450watt Ultra neon (which was about 40 dollars).
And my computer noise has increased enormously. Has the system noise been increased because the power supply is not of good quality?

And if i get a better power supply, will the noise level drop?

Question: loud static noise!

My computer is constantly making a loud static/rushing/electronic interference noise, all the time apart from when I play a CD using the Windows CD player - but if I try and play a CD using Windows Media Player I still get the noise, and the CD volume is so quiet you cannot hear it over the interference!

Any suggestions? I have a USB broadband modem and the problem started shortly after I installed this. I only have integral sound that came with the motherboard, I don't have a soundcard.

Any help welcome!

Answer:S10-2 loud beeping noise

hi sunstreaker,

Thank You for using Lenovo Community Forums!

I'm Thinking about stuck key or button on your system.
Can you try running Passmark Keyboard Test a key or button will show red on the image if it is being pressed or held down.

Try doing a BIOS Reset as well
Keep on hitting F2 when you turn it on,
Once inside BIOS, hit f9 to load default and f10 to save and exit

Best Regards

Whenever i start up a game, a loud squeeky noise appears for no reason. I think its my video card but im just wondering if its something else. Does anyone know about this problem??

Answer:Weird loud noise????

It could be a fan, when you put more pressure on your graphics card it may well decide to turn up its 'im a little bastard' fan.

They can be quiet loud. They should be torn asunder and replaced with nice Coolermaster or Zalman things.

Frosty cool and quiet.

I bought the laptop a week ago and im loving it but the fan is really loud.So as soon as i start ANY type of game, the fan starts immediately and the noise level is intense so i downloaded db measurer on my phone, made my room complete quiet, started up lol client, turn on db measurer on my phone, place it on the left of the laptop and i read numbers flashing bw 55~65. This was the same for every other gamesi read a bunch of reviews on 510p beforr buying it but I never read anything about fan noise being loud. My measurement probably isnt accurate as it cud be because it was measured on a phone, but i think its still too loud. Is something wrong with my machine?

Answer:y510p fan noise too loud

The laptop gets very hot so the fans have to run fast. I can't hear your laptop but I have a feeling you are hearing the standard noise form these fans.

Hey everyone! I just got a new u310 a few days ago. It has Windows 8 installed. I started working on the notebook, hoping the fan noise would eventually stop but it is really really noisy. I installed a software, which would indicate a temperature of 36°C, so usually the fan shouldn't be working on such a high level in the first place. I have read a couple of posts about this, but no one seems to have found a solution for tge U310 specifically. Does anyone have the same problem? I thought maybe there is a BIOS update which would help...? Thanks a lot, Sonni

Answer:U310 loud fan noise

hi Sonni_87,

The loud fan noise that you're hearing, is it a:1. A wind noise?
     - If it is, this is normal as faster fan speed causes wind noise on the vents (this usually happens if you're getting unusual heat and the fan spins at a higher rate to cool down the CPU/GPU.

2. A grinding / rattling noise?
     - this indicates that the fan is struggling - It's possible that it's hitting something, is dirty or is starting to wear out and needs to be replaced.

Also, the BIOS can configure on how the fan spins. It's possible that the configuration is set to make the fan spin at a higher rate even on less load on the CPU/GPU (like in this article). In this case, you may need to contact lenovo report this issue

Question: Realtek loud noise

Hello,

I have Realtek Microphone in Recording settings of sound and Realtek Digital Output in Playback.

I did not make any updates for my Windows 10 64-bit for last few weeks or changes in settings, and this problem stats when I start my computer today.

I tried to use Skype, but it turned out that my microphone stopped working, my voice is not heard. Then I tried to record voice with sound forge and same here, it should be noted that I do not get just an empty track with zero sound, record just does not happen. It is different things. But most horrible thing I got now is a very loud noise which almost hurts your ears. Noise occurs if I'm trying record something, answer to the skype, and also I got some low clicking sound of very loud short sound each time I'm trying to on video or audio, or switch it with timeline.

I've updated all drivers in Device Manager:

Microphone (Realtek High Definition Audio)
Realtek Digital Output (Realtek High Definition Audio)
Speakers (Realtek High Definition Audio)
Stereo Mix (Realtek High Definition Audio)

and it says the best driver software for your device is already installed.

So I have no idea what to do. Can't get if it is system problem or something wrong with hardware.

Answer:Realtek loud noise

Do you have "digital" speakers or just the standard computer speakers? I suspect just standard speakers (using the Green speaker connection) so "Speakers" should be set as the default playback device. In the recording settings, either the microphone or better yet "Stereo Mix" should be set as default Recording device.

Get the settings properly set and then see what happens.

My laptop - just over a year old now - began making this noise. I of course assume it is the fan or hard drive. I'm glad I did backup for recovery and drivers...but what steps should I take? Any suggestions are appreciated.

I was using my PC and all of the sudden it started making a loud almost rattling sound. I shut it off, waited a little and restarted it. It went away for a few minutes and then came back. I opened up the case to see if I could find where the noise was coming from and it seemed to be coming from one of the fans. I unplugged the power to that fan and now it is quiet again.

Do fans go bad? Is there a fix for this or do I just need to get a new fan?

The fan of my less-than-half-a-year-old T470 suddenly began to emit strange noise (video). I tried to apply a vacuum cleaner to the fan output to remove possible external pieces that might cause it (didn?t work) and also looked on the fan with the back panel removed (cannot see anything unusual). Is there a chance to fix this without going to the service? Thanks

I just got my new XPS 2710 a week ago. All things working perfectly (Windows 8 not too exciting)  except the fan noise. I have no application consuming CPU, memory is low and no network activity still I hear the fan running a bit higher than normal.
Does anyone has seen this or has recommendation before I call support and debug.

thanks

Answer:New XPS One 2710 loud fan noise

Hi pkmaster,
The fan could be running at a higher speed due to any Windows background services accessing the processor resources. However, I suggest you to run the hardware diagnostics to check if all the components are working properly and particularly on the Processor and the fan by following the steps provided in the following link:http://dell.to/OUGnqT
Please let me know if you need further assistance.

Hello everyone. I own a dell inspiron 9300 and I recently read that if i typed msconfig into the run tab on my computer and then disabled some of the items on there that it would run quicker. Well I did just that and then I tryed to switch it back and I can't. Now my internet connection won't work and it makes this extremely loud beeping noise for no reason. It's always been really slow and I thought I could speed it up. I only use it for going on the internet and for fixing my pictures. If anyone has any advice I'd really appreciate it. Thanks

I was just taking apart my desktop and cleaning it up/blowing off the dust using a pressurized air gun (not too pressurized), and now that I have the nuts and screws back on, I plugged it in and the loudest noise began to come from the cooling fan.

It sounds as if theres something hitting the fan as it turns, this only happens on start-up for about 5 seconds as the fan blows at full speed. I did a visual inspection and there was nothing close to the fan, all wires were tucked away. What should I do?

Answer:Loud noise coming from fan

It's possible that when you blew compressed air through the cooling fan, some grit/debris inadvertently got into the fan motor pinion. It should eventually work itself out, but if it's stubborn then try blowing more compressed air. You might also want to check if there's a lubrication port somewhere on it (some of these fans are completely maintenance free, but some can be lubricated).
