Toshiba USB Recovery issue - Satellite C50-A 'no bootable disk'.

Question: Toshiba USB Recovery issue - Satellite C50-A 'no bootable disk'.

I'm having trouble fixing a Satellite C50-A Laptop, which was running Windows 8.1.

The main issue is a 'no bootable disk' error message.

The secondary issue, which is stopping me solving the first issue, is difficulty using the Toshiba USB recovery disk.

Any suggestions or advice on either of these problems would be much appreciated.

Troubleshooting this PC so far........................

The laptop has only had 13 months of light use.

I have no idea what caused the initial issue, but it's now giving a 'no bootable disk' error message.

( I'm not at all clear on how these recovery partitions are supposed to work. And I'm not familiar with UEFI / Secure Boot etc. Does this error message mean that the boot partition and the recovery partition both became corrupted simultaneously? Or are there some main boot files which might have become corrupt? )

I used a Linux live CD to access the drive, read-only, and managed to recover data. This would suggest to me that CD, CPU and RAM are all working okay, and the disk is still accessible. I'm not sure if this is a correct assumption.

It looks as if Windows has got itself mangled during some quick hibernate process, but I'm not competent enough to troubleshot a Toshiba partition / Windows 8.1 corruption issue from Linux.

So I reset the BIOS after using the Linux CD, and purchased a Toshiba USB Recovery stick.

Ideally, I'd like to just repair Windows, if that is all that is broken, and leave everything else as it was.
As a second choice, a complete fresh install back to factory settings would be fine.

However, I am having severe problems using the USB stick. I have tried all 3 USB ports and I am having the same problem on all of them.

It is taking hours and hours to load this recovery system. It does appear to be working, but in geological time. I have to leave the PC for about 4 hours after every mouse click before the next action is possible.

By this I mean, it is hours of the little circle before anything happens. Then hours again before a mouse cursor appears.
And hours again before a menu appears, then hours again before I click which keyboard language, and so on.

I have recovered netbooks from USB and laptops from CD before, but this is a far slower response than I have ever seen before. At this rate, a normal install would take several weeks.

I'm not at all clear as to what is going on here. I'm not sure if there is simply a fault with the USB stick from Toshiba, or if this is indicating that there is a major underlying hardware fault with this PC.

I would have much preferred to get the recovery files on CD, but this was not an option. Is it possible to transfer the install files from USB stick to CD using another PC?

Apologies for asking multiple questions in the same post, but I am not clear which question is most relevant to getting the machine functioning again.

Preferred Solution: Toshiba USB Recovery issue - Satellite C50-A 'no bootable disk'.

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Hi there,

i have set the boot sequence to boot from cd, but the message reads: non bootable disk.

I have tried to open it with ghost but it wants a password.

Toshiba Satellite A60.

Answer:Satellite A60 - Recovery disk will not boot - error non bootable disk

First of all you will be not able to extract the ghost image file because it?s secured as you could see.

I don?t know why you cannot boot from the Toshiba Recovery CD. But a reason could be:
- The CD is faulty (scratch, not more readable)
- You used a wrong CD
- The CD/DVD drive cannot handle this CD due to the old and faulty drive laser lens.

So you should firstly check if you can boot from other Microsoft Windows CD to find out if the CD/DVD drive is ok.
If this is ok then there is a issue with your CD!!!

I have an A300-1MO.
Can I use any Toshiba recovery disk \?
Or is there like a specific one for my A300-1MO?

I'm like a total noob....
Somebody pls help...!

Answer:Re: Satellite A300-1MO - Can I use any Toshiba recovery disk?

No, you cannot use any Recovery disk? you have to use the recovery disk designed for this notebook model.
The point is that recovery disk contains a image. Image is a package which contains OS and Toshiba drivers?
If you would use another recovery disk then the image would be installed with not compatible drivers and this could lead to further problems?

Every new Toshiba notebook provides a Toshiba Recovery Disk creator tool. This tool can create a recovery disk?

I am trying to restore my Toshiba Satellite laptop to its original factory condition. However, when I insert the recovery disk that was provided by Toshiba, I get this error message:
+"This Recovery and Applications CD is not configured to work with this machine. This CD is for: Satellite P105. Please use the correct Recovery and Applications CD."+

My laptop model is "P105-S6084". Anyone happen to have a solution?

Answer:Toshiba Satellite Won't Recognize Recovery Disk

Have you tried booting from the Recovery Disc?

Has the mainboard ever been changed? Maybe the DMI information was not updated.

Answer:Re: Satellite L300-1G5 - Where to get Toshiba recovery disk?

That's the point that you had to do it when bought your laptop. Now, you can't make it as it's not available anymore on your laptop. Installing Ubuntu you wiped it.
Now, you can:

1 Order [Recovery disk|] from Toshiba for money
2 Get windows copy disk to install. All drivers you can find on the [European Toshiba Driver Page|]

I've L755 from PSK2YE series for 40 days, and I have a problem with the Recovery Disk Creator part. I believe something is missing as I simply do not have the TRDCLcher.exe on the menu. I probably unistalled it by mistake or so.

I still have the HDD Recovery partition on D:.

Is there any way possible of getting that file back so I peform the Disk Recovery?

Answer:Satellite L755 - Can't use Toshiba recovery disk creator

That means you can?t start the recovery disk creator or what happened exactly?

The recovery disk creator can?t be reinstalled because it?s only preinstalled on your notebook. I think in this case your only chance is starting the HDD recovery option and reset Windows to factory settings. With out of box settings you can use the recovery disk creator.

I also need to restore my P200 with the Toshiba CD. There is a note on the pocket : insert CD, power off, power on with F12 press, select reader and follow explanations. I wonder if it is possible to reformat only the 2nd disc.

Answer:I need to restore Satellite P200 with the Toshiba Recovery disk

Using original Toshiba recovery CD/DVD you can install clean operating system and have ?factory settings again. Before recovery procedure starts the whole HDD will be deleted and formatted.
With other words ? you will lose all your data.

If the notebook is delivered with 2 HDDs the recovery DVD can be used with HDD1 only.

My sister has a Toshiba Satellite M100-164 (PSMA0E) which she's been using for 2-3 years.

I've formatted it. Last year to install Windows Vista. But, unfortunately, I've also deleted the hidden partition for this upgrade. Plus, as you might guess as well, I've not created the recovery media, prior to my formatting. She started saying she's not happy with the system and requested me to convert it back to its previous state.

In the forum I saw that the user {color:#ff0000}*["locojava" asked a question about a driver he was searching for his PSMA0E|]*{color}. I wanted to reply the thread but it was locked.

So, I'd appreciate, if "locojava" or any M100-164 users who have the recovery media would contact me to find a solution. I want to make a clean install to make her happy with the factory-settings laptop. I also can buy the duped cd(s) so that the problem be solved.

Dear All,

I have problem with my Satellite A215-S7422 (AMD)
I bought this unit included Windows Vista Home Premium+Recovery Disc inside the package.
I really enjoy the fitures of Vista, amazing !!!
But some programs I've had didn't support for Vista. That's a pity for me.
So, I tried to make new partition than installed Windows XP SP2.
The problem is my Vista wasn't appeared anymore.
So I tried to get back my Vista using my recovery disc. But unfortunately it didn't work at all.

Questions :
1. Can CD recovery didn't work if we split Harddrive (make some partitions) ?
2. My recovery disc file is .tib, so I try using Acronis Image, while I operating this program my notebook didn't detect DVD Drive. Than I try to copy the all file for both of Recovery Disc to empty partition, I can see the .tib file but it didn't work also. Can you explain what probably causes ?
3. If I format all drives than make it one drive, can Recovery Disc works?

Please do me a favour for this
Your assist will be appreciated.

Answer:Satellite A215-S7422 some questions regarding Toshiba Recovery disk

I?m not quite sure how it works on US series but I think it?s not very different to EU series.

1) No, you cannot split the HDD using the Recovery disk. The recovery disk will format the whole HDD and will create the partitions like at the beginning.
2) I doubt you can burn it using other 3rd party programs. Toshiba has installed Toshiba Recovery Disk Creator which should be used to burn the Recovery disk
3) As I said in point 1 -> Recovery disk will format the whole HDD. It?s no matter how many partitions are created on HDD. Everything will be erased

I have got a problem recovering SATELLITE P500. I had made the recovery disks. It boots ok from the recovery disk and formats the hard drive and copies the disks to the hard drive. It then starts windows setup and reboots.

Then it goes to a loop
1) Start up and says "Setup is preparing your computer for first use"
2) Toshiba banner saying please wait... Finnishing installation may take several minutes. Pleae do not interupt or shutdown the computer!
3) Windows logo
4) Shutting down...
5) restarts and goes to 1)

It would be great if some one could help me with this.

Many thanks,

Answer:Satellite P500 - Restart loop after using Toshiba recovery disk

I have noticed the same on my Satellite P500 but I must say it?s not an issue, it?s absolutely normal. The notebook will restart several times (10 times or more) to finish the installation.

You must know that a lot of drivers/tools will be installed and certain restart must be done to configure everything properly.

So don?t interrupt the recovery installation, just wait a little bit longer and drink a coffee. Everything happens automatically and your notebook will be reinstalled with factory settings. :)

I have a Sattelite Pro A200 lap top and would like to install 64bit Vista.
As i've read you can use the 32bit key to install the 62bit version. Is there a way to get the "Product Recovery Disk" in a 64bit version.

Or to download it from somewhere

Answer:Satellite Pro A200 How to get a 64bit Vista recovery disk from Toshiba

What OS was preinstalled on your notebook?
If it was a 32bit Vista OS then you can get ?only? a 32bit Vista Toshiba recovery CD.

If you want to install another OS, no matter if it?s XP or Vista 64bit, you have to buy the OS from Microsoft.

PS: As far as I know the serial key used for the Vista 32bit OS is only a OEM key and it does not work with other operating systems!

you CAN'T see the hidden partition in my computer. to know it's there you'ld have to go to administrative tools (i'm not sure now) but even then, if it is a recovery partition you better leave it be and don't mess around with it.

Try holding down zero key while your pc is booting. (switch it off, hold down zero key, press power button while still holding down zero key).
it should launch the hdd recovery tool.

It didn't work for me but it might work for you.

It looks like the boot manager on the HDD has been damaged but this should not affect the booting from recovery disk or other disks like Win XP, Vista, etc?

Please check if you can boot from disk like Win XP.
This should repair the boot manager.

The necessary drivers could be downloaded from the Toshiba driver page.

Hi there gomez4096,

I recommend checking the HDD for any errors. Download "SEATOOLS" DOS version and put the program onto a bootable media(e.g. CD). Then boot the computer to the Seatools CD that you just created. Follow the on-screen instructions and test the computer HDD for any errors. Make sure to run both the short and extended test.

It's possible that the HDD is the culprit. How old is this laptop may I ask? Check Toshiba's website to see if the laptop is under warranty. If so, contact Toshiba and have them replace the hard drive(assuming that Seatools gives out an error).

Hope everything works out well for you and feel free to ask more questions, thank you.

I recently purchaced a new notebook, shipped with W7 64-bit HP. I need 32-bit in order to run certain programs, so I used my W7 Ult DVD and installed it on this laptop.

I did not delete the recovery partition that was already on the drive, but I re-installed my own W7 on the partition with the pre-installed W7.

This was a mistake... I lack a lot of drivers and pre-compiled software that is not available for download from the manufactor.

So, I hope there is a way to make the recovery disk bootable, so I can boot from it in order to respawn the pre-installed W7.

Any ideas and tips are more than welcome!

Answer:Make RECOVERY disk bootable?

All data will be DELETED, backup your data first.

You will need to mark the Recovery Partition ACTIVE.

1) Boot DVD, & Press Shift+F10 (for command prompt)
DISKPART : At PC Startup
2) Boot DVD, & Command Prompt at Startup
(for command prompt)
Partition - Mark as Active

On reboot Recovery will start.

Ok, just got done with a complete recovery of a dell 1501 laptop.
Went through a ton of updates and actually had to restart due to a failure in the update process along the way.
It is now in top shape, with all updates spyware, antivirus addes, crapware removed etc.

NOW i am curious, is there a way to make a bootable recovery disk ( DVD) from the current disk image?

So that when this this goes to heck again they can just pop the disk in a bring it back to where it is now?

I have Win 10 64bit. I was told that I need to create a bootable disk on a USB by someone in our local store. When I asked him how many GB's he said in the 20's. I did not buy it, but much later went back and a different guy said 28GB but I should get larger just in case.

Doing a search, I cannot see what would take up 20+GB's. For a bootable I see that it would take 8GB. What would they be talking about?

Do I also need a Recovery disk?

I am not sure what I should be doing...

Answer:Bootable disk? Recovery disk? What do I need?

One of our members has developed a custom recovery media, which you can find here:
Windows 10 Recovery Tools - Bootable Rescue Disk - Windows 10 Forums

It would fit on a 2GB stick.

If you want the W10 operating system (for future installation or DISM procedures) it would fit on an 8Gb stick.

If you're talking about creating bootable recovery media from an OEM using their pre-installed software, it could be slightly larger, but should still fit on an 8GB stick.

Images of your entire hard drive should be kept on an external hard drive.

Hope that helps.

I tried to recover my Acer Aspire V5 using the recovery disk I just paid $44.95 for.  When I got to the point where it says remove recovery disk and press ok to continue, I thought I was in the home stretch.  But instead, I received a "no bootable device -- insert boot disk and press any key error".  Can't figure out what to do.  I have no other disk for this computer.  Thought this receovery disk was supposed to be a one stop fix to restore my computer to its condition when I bought it.  Any help greatly appreciated.

I'm having some issues making the Recovery Disc (see ), but as the main file burned to the discs is a 1+ GB *".exe"* one, I am starting to wonder if the discs are really expected to be bootable... after all you'd +usually+ require a windows envionment to execute such a file.

Or maybe the files required to "run" that .exe are supposed to be in the bootable part of the disc?

Thanks in advance.

Answer:Are Recovery Discs bootable? - Satellite A300

I don?t know how you have burned the Recovery disk but you should use definitely the Toshiba Recovery disk creator tool.
This tool burns the Toshiba image and creates the bootable recovery disk.

And yes, the recovery disk is bootable and if you want to start the recovery procedure you have to boot from it.

HI Guys
i really need help in making a DVD bootable disk form dell factory recovery partition, the story started when my computer got so slow and i wanted to make factory recovery to the original as the computer was when i bought it.
during the factory rest something happened and the power was interrupted, therefore the processing was not completed , i tried to do the same procedure but i did nit succeed using F8 ,, and i got always bootMGr problem.. what i did ,i installed another windows 7 professional , the computer now works , but i want to use my original software from dell, the recovery partition is still untouched and can see it... i am wondering how to make DVD bookable disk form this recovery partition as the windows running in the computer now is not as the same as the one originally installed by dell when i bought this computer...
any help highly appreciated

Answer:how to make DVD Bootable disk form factroy Recovery Partition ,

You might be able to access the recovery partition this way:

1. Start computer.
2. Immediately hold down the Ctrl key. At the same time start clicking the F11 key (top row of keyboard.) This may let the computer boot into the recovery partition.
3. If it boots into the recovery partition you should be bale to click "Restore," and then "Confirm" to restore your Dell computer. Click "Finish" when prompted to do so, and then select "Yes" to reboot.
4. You may see a different prompt to click "Next" and click "OK" to reboot depending on your specific computer model

If this doesn't work you might be able to have Dell send you recovery disks for your specific machine free of charge. This is a one time offer.

Hi guys,

I need to create bootable flash disk from original recovery media to Satellite A200-1M4, because my DVD-RW is not able to read the DVD anymore and I have to reinstall OS. Actually, I made bootable Flash drive and I copied content of DVD. PC boots from it, but it stops since it is looking for E: drive (DVD-RW). Is it possible to fix it somehow?

Answer:How to create bootable flash disk from original recovery media?

Hi Pedi

As far as I know you cannot create bootable flash disc using Toshiba recovery image files.
This can be done on new NB series using original Toshiba recovery creator tool.

Satellite A200 is old notebook model and you can find new optical disc drive on eBay and it is not expensive. Exchange the ODD and everything will be OK again.

Dear Forums, Recently, I cancelled a factory reset for my Lenovo x230t Thinkpad and did not wait for the cancellation to finish. Therefore, my Windows 7 startup file has been corrupted, and I cannot get onto my computer as there is a BSOD. As there is no cd recovery disk for this Lenovo model, I was forced to buy one for this model from Lenovo Priorty Warranty Care. The x230t also has no optical drive. Therefore, my question is this: How do you transfer files from a Lenovo Recovery CD to a USB flash drive (how big?), and how do I load it onto my broken computer (I know you have to boot from USB in BIOS)? If anyone has knowledge pertaining to the x230t model specifically, that would be even better.  Thank you,J

I ordered a Toshiba recovery USB. It cost me ?40! But it doesn't work. I need to restore my system because my entire hard disk - including the recovery partition - was wiped clean by a virus. A laptop repair person put a cheap version of Windows 8 on for me, but it is not the full version and various things - such as the DVD player - don't work. I need to reinstall to factory settings.

My USB ports are working fine. When I am in Windows, I can view the contents of the USB stick I have been sent. It contains various folders and files, including a "BOOT" folder and a "BOOTMGR" file.

I have been into the UEFI settings and made the following changes:
Disabled Secure Boot
Changed the Boot Order so that USB is top of the list
Changed the Boot Mode from UEFI to CSM

When I restart the machine with these settings in place, I get the message "No bootable device - insert boot disk and press any key".

I have four USB ports and I have tried plugging the USB stick into every single one of them, but I get the same error every time.

I basically need to reinstall my Windows Vista as purchased a new HDD and obviously didn't have the recovery disk for my windows vista. Have looked at the Toshiba Media Recovery but cannot use as I bought my laptop in Australia so my serial number is not recognise.

Please help me resolve this long running problem!

Answer:Where to order Toshiba recovery disk?

I think in this case you can only use a normal Microsoft disk or you contact an authorized service provider in Australia. Maybe they can send you a recovery disk in your current country.

As I already said in worst case you have to use a Microsoft disk and then download and install all drivers from the Toshiba page. Then you have factory settings back too.

Apparently, according to my dad's computer friend, there are 'some sites' that provide downloads of a "boot file" that is able to recover the Windows Operating system. i honestly think that is just bogus. Any helpful hints?

The recovery CD will not recover any files that were originally on the hard drive, it will just overwrite everything with a fresh copy of Windows. You can request these CDs directly from Toshiba.

I purchased a recovery disk from toshiba for a toshiba laptop. It came as 1 of 2 and 2 of 2 cds. After following the instructions and loading each cd in turn, it asks for a disk 3. Since I don't have any disk 3, my only choices are retry (which of course only keeps asking for the next disk) or cancel. When I choose cancel, it says that the recovery didn't finish. When restarting the laptop (hoping that it would start even though the recovery didn't finish or at least I didn't get any message that it was finished), I get a message saying that the bootmgr is missing. When I called the Toshiba office that sent me the disks, they say that this model asks for an application disk (that isn't needed), and the error message means my hard drive is failing. Are they telling me the truth, or do I have a laptop that has partially installed the recovery which is why it is giving me the error message.

Answer:is bootmgr on a Toshiba recovery disk?

If you have a Toshiba hard drive also you can perform a hard drive fitness test using the Hitachi program. Download it from another computer and create a bootable disk. Use that disk in the laptop to determine if the drive is failing. You can also enter the BIOS (setup) screens and verify SMART is enabled. If it is and the drive is failing you may get some information on the boot screens from SMART. I would guess Toshiba should know their own product.Tell us why you were restoring to factory condition in the first place. That explanation may help with a diagnosis.

You don't have a plain jane copy of Win95/98? You don't need the recovery CD to install Windoz on the laptop. All it does is install a lot of useless utilites and Toshiba stuff. Windows will recognize every device in that laptop and install the drivers for it. I think i have a copy of it at work if you really need it.

Perhaps an odd problem, but I need help:

I have a Toshiba A205 that came with Vista installed. I?ve obtained a set of XP Toshiba recovery disks for this computer which I want to install in a dual-boot arrangement. I know how to set up the dual-boot but I am afraid to run the XP recovery disk for fear it will over-write my Vista partition (C instead of installing to the D: partition I?ve set up.

Does anyone know how to use a Toshiba recovery disc to install to an alternate partition? Thanks!

Answer:Install XP from Toshiba Recovery Disk to D:???

I think the recovery disk will disregard the partition and overwrite vista unless you first make the C: drive partition invisible (non-bootable). Then you may be able to run teh recovery disk to the D: drive. your C: partition.

Beware...this idea is messy because your MFT is getting re-written 3-4 times

Had software (trojan or virus) problem so tried to restore from Ghost, which said to insert the recovery disk. Have recovery disks (1 and 2) for Toshiba laptop and inserted and computer read the first. After inserting the second as requested, window again popped up asking for 2nd disk, so apparently it could not read the second disk. Recovery disks were furnished with the laptop and used only once, but are clean with no noticeable marks. I now have one disk that will read, and one good Ghost backup of entire laptop disk (the other backups were made after some computer problems occured so might be infected although AVG was used. Ghost backed up the HD as five separate files to an external HD. I have Norton Ghost 9 and Norton 2003 original disks as well as the orignial Toshiba two recovery disks (one apparently bad).

Since I used the first recovery disk, the HD was changed and now says it is missing a file [required to boot] and will not start. Since the recovery disks worked one time, I doubt BestBuy would be interested in doing anything about the second bad recovery disk.

I have frequently made backups which was apparently a waste of time. Is there anything to be done other than dropping the laptop off at my favorite computer repair store? I have an identical laptop (mine, the broken one is the wife's) for which the only difference is the disk content changes after an out-of-the-box condition,i.e. both were new and bought the same day. Can I use my laptop ... Read more

Answer:2nd Toshiba recovery disk will not read

FWIW: Malware is not a software problem, it's a malware problem requiring an entirely different set of procedures/concepts...for overcoming such. Software problems ordinarily can be solved by simply uninstalling the software. Not so with malware...the efffects on the system may be felt long after the malware items have been removed.

As for recovery disks...the system manufacturer is responsible for determining how they work...what they do...what they won't do.

There is no standard rule for recovery disks...they may vary from manufacturer to manufacturer and even system to system within the product line of a given manufacturer.

You would have to read the documentation for your particular become knowledgeable about these disks.

I myself don't have any systems with recovery disks and the one OEM (Dell] laptop I own...I've done a clean install of Win 7 with a MS Upgrade DVD which I purchased.

Although your title is about Ghost...which is a backup software...I don't see much about it. If you have a backup, then you should restore it...assuming that it's useable and was properly made. I've not used Ghost, I still use its predecessor (Powerquest Drive Image) when I want to do backups of XP.

If you want recovery disks for your wife's system...I suggest contacting the manufacturer of said system.

Need some help and information please to get my toshiba laptop going again. Its a Satellite A300-1mc running Vista 32 bit which has a pre-installed hdd recovery. When I first bought it I tried making the recovery disks and it copied the first one ok but gave me an error when writing the second disk.I didnt pursue this any further as didnt think I would ever need them..but kept the disks anyway.

Fast forward a year later and now have a problem.Every so often I liked to re-install Vista and would do this through the prompt keys within vista which obviously formats the hdd and puts fresh windows back on.The last time I did this the procedure seemed to stop while it was formatting so had to power down.On power up I now have nothing except the message BOOTMGR is missing.Well I tried the recovery disks I had.Took the first one ok but stopped on second disk.

Here's my problem.

I had put the recovery CD into the CD-ROM. Then I restart my laptop and press F12 and choose boot from CD-ROM. Then I come to a black screen where there written "Windows 98 ..."

After wait for awhile, fail message appear.

My laptop was with Windows XP and I do not know why the word "Windows 98" appear. After failed, I try go in window and double click the CD-ROM setup and it said could not read one of the file in CD. The CD is used to reformat the laptop before.

Is it the CD corrupted?

Answer:Can't reformat using Toshiba recovery disk

Hey mate,

First of all it would be interesting to know what notebook you have. Maybe it was delivered with Windows 98 recovery disk? I don?t know.

Theoretically it could be a problem of the CD. Just try another disk and see what happens.

I have a C650D that was working fine up to a week ago.
It shut down ok, but refused to start up on the next boot.

It comes up saying 'No bootable device -- Insert boot disk & press any key'.
So I stuck in a bootable recovery dvd and the same thing came up, but although the dvd drive 'twitched' when I inserted the disk, it didn't seem to look at it at all when I rebooted.
I rebooted again & pressed F12 to check the boot order. 1st is usb, then cd/dvd, lan, fdd, then hdd/ssd.
I selected cd/dvd and after a few seconds' wait it said 'A disk read error occurred. Press ctrl+alt+del to restart.

Both the harddrive & the dvd drive show up correctly in the bios.

I plugged in a usb dvd drive, put in a recovery cd, rebooted & it started to boot from the usb drive, but then stopped doing anything after the first bit of info came up on the screen.
I tried several bootable cds and they all do the same. They start booting, then freeze. For example, if I put in an XP install disk I get - 'Press any key to boot from cd drive' (the usb one), then 'Setup is inspecting your hardware', then a black screen.

I've tried changing anything that might help in the bios, SATA controller mode, for example, but nothing has any effect on the situation.

Any ideas anyone please?

Many thanks.

Does this mean that if you remove the HDD you can boot from the USB flash drive, but you cannot boot from CD/DVD drive even if the HDD is removed?

It sounds really strange but I think this would mean that either the SATA controller on the motherboard is faulty and therefore its not possible to boot from HDD or CD/DVD drive. Or it could be also possible that HDD and ODD malfunctions. But it would be really strange that both devices would start to malfunction at the same time?

So possibly the second idea is not true? however, this would mean that something happened to the motherboard.

But try this: access the BIOS pressing F2 at the beginning. Now set it to default settings pressing F9 and then save the changes pressing F10.
Now try to boot again using an Recovery disk?

I have this laptop with 3 Partitions
The main partition got corrupted and apparently wiped so all windows folders have been deleted and a low level format carried out
I still have the recovery sector
Just wondering how to reinstall it back onto the main partition
I tried F8 and it took me to a screen to choose language but after that it said "You must log in to access system recovery options"
I guess user data has been wiped from the main partition ?
Are there any other keys to press on startup to access the Recovery partition ?

Answer:Toshiba Satellite Recovery

Look at the boot screen when you start the computer up - that's the one with the Toshiba logo all over it - and you should see commands like 'Press 'Del' for BIOS' and 'Press 'F8' for boot choices'. There will be one for 'Recovery' if you have a recovery partition. It is sometimes 'F2' but by no means always.
Press whichever is the specified key while the boot screen is showing and the recovery system should start, and once you have made one or two choices via dialogue boxes it will just run until it is completed.
TWO POINTS. The first is that this process will wipe all your own data and applications off the system. I would suggest that you take the hard drive out and slave it to another computer - you may need to use some sort of 'caddy' but they are widely available - to try and save what you can of your own data.
The second is that this process will restore your computer to the condition it was in when it was built !  This means you will have to uninstall any manufacturer installed software that you don't want, and that you will have to re-install all your own appications, and you will have all the updates to do since it was built !
The important bit here, if you decide to go down this route, is to try and back-up your own data - documents, photos, whatever - this is the valuable stuff. You say a 'low-level format has been carried out'. This may mean that your data is already gone, but see if you can still save any of it.
Good luck,

Hey guys!

For one reason and another I'm considering ordering a Toshiba C660 recovery disk' (Mainly because I would like to sell this laptop and a clean install of Windows 7 is more appealing and secure) but before I go ahead and buy the disk from Toshiba, I presume I will have to enter the windows 7 product key printed on the bottom of my laptop?

The only real problem with this is the key has faded quite badly (Being on the bottom it's seen some use..) and I can't quite make out the last few numbers on the sticker

Is there a way I can get a new key? Or get around entering the key on the new install of windows?

For those interested, a photo of the sticker is below, maybe someone with better eyesight could help?

<Image removed to avoid piracy - ETAF Moderator>

Answer:Toshiba C660 Recovery Disk - Few Questions

I removed the image, because if anyone can read the key - they can use it and put on the internet for anyone to use

Use this program and you will get the key

you can also use Belarc - System Management For The Internet Age. Software license management, IT asset management, IT security audits and more.
to get the key

Also goto the toshiba site and download all the drivers for the PC and put them on a Disk - that will make it easy to re-install any drivers if needed.

Also you could probably make the recovery DVD your self - if the PC has a recovery partition
You should have a recovery manager to create the media

have a look at
Control Panel
Administrative Tools
Computer Manager
Disk Manager

should see if there is a partition called recovery

Hi all

I wanted to recover my original Windows that i created 2 DVDs when i first bought the laptop.
the first DVD worked OK and erased everything, then it won't read my second DVD although it appears fine to me and can be read on other devices.

is there any way i can recover my original windows?

i tried pressing 0 when starting up but no use.

thanks a lot

Answer:Toshiba Recovery - 2nd disk doesn't work

This is very bad situation now. All you can do is to try again. Make second DVD clean and try it again.
I really hope this will work somehow. If not, you have a big problem.

Before recovery image installation starts whole HDD will be formatted so there is no chance to start HDD recovery installation from the HDD (using 0 at start-up).

Hi where can i download toshiba recovery disk creator?

I have this model [Satellite A300-146 PSAJ0E| 50528] .

I cand find it maybe i uninstal this utility..:/

Answer:Where can I dowload Toshiba Recovery disk creator?

Toshiba Recovery disk creator is part of the Toshiba image.
This Recovery Disk creator software creates the Toshiba disk using the Toshiba HDD recovery image files.
If you delete such image files, this tool will not help you even if you would be able to install it again.

By the way: I found such Toshiba Recovery disk creator on Toshiba Australian page for download

my question is this if I buy a new windows XP operating system will this fix my problem will this remove the old xp os system an replace it with a working one or do i need specifically the toshiba disk to fix this..not worried if i lose some progroams just want his internet service back so he can stay off my pc .

Answer:toshiba laptop lost recovery disk what to do

if you buy a new windows and install it, it will wipe the whole hd and install your windows on it. This will get rid all the files on the hd.. This will remove the virus and whatever you have on the laptop, so all your files and such. When you install the new windows, make sure you choose format to format the HD to ensure the HD got wiped clean. Then proceed to windows installtion. AFter it's done, go to toshiba's website and download the needed driver for your system.

Can someone please tell if I can do this?

If you have Toshiba Vista recovery DVD then the whole HDD will be formatted and it?s not possible to restore the OS only on one partition.
Therefore you should backup the data always before using this disk

1- pressing the "C" button when the computer starts
2- pressing "F12"
3- enter the BIOS configuration and select cd-rom to boot up first

But the computer starts up normaly and doesn't show any error message

Can anyone help-me? I don't know what to do

Because of a back door trojan, I decided to use DBAN (Darik's Boot and Nuke) to overwrite the hdd and then re-install xp home. The problem is that the Toshiba recovery cd's run successfully, but when the pc reboots, I end up with a black screen and a flashing cursor. Windows xp doesn't start.

What I have done:

Ran DBAN in the 'autonuke' mode. It was successful.

Followed Toshiba instructions and booted to the 'Express Media Player Recovery CD' (for full re-install), selected 'Delete all partitions'. It was successful.

Followed Toshiba instructions and booted to the 'Product Recovery DVD-ROM'. It copied files for about 15 minutes and was successful.

Now, when the pc boots, just a black screen appears with a flashing cursor. Windows XP doesn't load.

I re-ran the Toshiba Product Recovery CD two more times. It was successful both times, but no improvement.

How do I get the pc up and running again?

I don't have a plain XP install disk, only the recovery disks from Toshiba.

PC: Toshiba M70 with 100 gb hard drive.
Thanks for any help.

Hello everyone

I have problem with disk recovery on my notebook.
When I had formated my hdd I lost my recovery and I can't get back it.
That's why I need to order backup recovery from Toshiba, but I have a question about it.

Could you please give me some information?
Are my lost Windows Vista and all Toshiba applications on recovery backup?

Thank you very much for responses.

Answer:Vista and all Toshiba applications on the recovery disk?

The Toshiba recovery disk contains the factory settings of your notebook. That means the OS (in your case Windows Vista) and all Toshiba drivers and tools. It?s the same as you have started the notebook the first time.
Furthermore the disk contains an image of the factory settings and in comparison to a Microsoft disk you save a lot of time because already some Windows updates installed and all drivers and tools that you need for a properly working notebook.

I hope I could help you a little bit to understand it better.
If you have more questions, please let us know! :)

Talk about confusing. Does anyone know how to get a Toshiba C660 working after the HDD has failed and the owner has stupidly NOT followed the instructions to make a recovery disk. Will the recovery disk ( if you purchase one from Toshiba ) rebuild the new HDD along with a new recovery partition and install windows 7 (original OS ) and accept the product key printed on the Windows License attached to the base of the laptop. I have read a number of suggestions but these have been deemed incorrect by others.

Surely Toshiba must have a way of sorting this problem.

Do they read these posts ?

Answer:Satellite L660-12Q - Would recovery disk rebuild the new HDD along with a new recovery partition

Hi buddy?

I don?t think that this is really complicated? I could find all info regarding the recovery procedure in the user manual?

The recovery disk has to be created at the first day of purchase? its recommended to create one in cases something would be wrong with the HDD.

The recovery disk contain an image?. Image is a package containing Win system, drivers, tools and all the stuff preinstalled on the notebook.
You purchased the notebook and the system was already activated so you don?t need the key placed at the bottom of the unit.
Furthermore the usage of recovery disk formats the whole HDD (partitions too) and set the notebook back to the same state like at the first day of purchase.

There is also another option to recover the notebook called HDD recovery. This HDD recovery does not need recovery disk. Usage of HDD recovery would format ONLY the C (system) partition.

I have a toshiba Satellite C650 that has recently come up with a disk read error. I want to access the command prompt to try some potential solutions that I have read about on the internet.

I have made a Windows 7 recovery disk using my other acer laptop which also has Windows 7 64-bit installed. When I use the recovery disk and it has loaded the files etc it just brings up a black screen and the cursor.

Does anyone have any ideas as to why this is happening?
I tried booting my acer laptop from the recovery disk and it worked fine.

Also does anyone have any suggestions as to why I am getting the 'disk read error - hit ctrl, alt and delete to restart' message?

Any help would be much appreciated, thanks.

Answer:Satellite C650 - Disk read error and recovery disk is not working

On this virtual way it is not easy to offer exact diagnostic but obviously there must be some problem with HDD. Can you obtain second one for testing purposes and exchange it. Just to be sure if HDD is ?troublemaker?.

But there is one another thing:

Sorry but I don?t understand this. Can you please explain to us what have you done exactly?

Not sure if I'm in the correct forum?  I tried to redo my Satellite P300 with the recovery discs I burnt when I bought the laptop.  No recovery partition on this model. The discs indicated an error right at the very end, and of course by that time the "C" drive was wiped.  Outside of buying recovery discs from Toshiba, if they're still available, does anyone have any ideas?  Thanks for any help you can provide.

Answer:Toshiba Satellite Recovery Disc

I would try running the recovery discs again, this may have been a 'blip' and may not repeat. Make sure the discs are clean.
Failing that, what OS did you have on this laptop - XP, Vista, Win 7 ?  If you have a Windows validation code on a sticker on the bottom, and can lay your hands on an install disc for your OS, you can re-install Windows that way. The only problem you are likely to have is sourcing the drivers for the graphics, sound, wi-fi, etc. and the best place to go for them is the Toshiba web-site. If you google 'Toshiba satellite P300 drivers' you will find a number of links.
If all else fails, you can always try Toshiba for recovery discs. I have a set for a Satellite of slightly older vintage and I must admit I have never checked them for integrity !

How d I do a Destructive Recovery on a Toshiba Satellite L305D-S5928. I have no discs, but I would like to reset to factory new.

Answer:Destructive Recovery Toshiba Satellite

Your computer may have a recovery partition on the hard drive. Try holding down the 0 (zero) key while powering up the computer from a totally off state. If the computer has such a partition, you will get a Toshiba Recovery Wizard screen. One of the options will be to restore the factory software. Selecting that should then change the screen to give you the option to restore to "out-of-the-box" state.

Click the "User Guide" tab on this page for the computer's on-line user manual that includes information on recovery options.
