Dell Inspiron 11 3147 - crackling noises

Question: Dell Inspiron 11 3147 - crackling noises

Hey!
I have recently bought a new Dell Inspiron 11 3147. Everything was fine for about an hour (created my MS Windows account, installed some apps, laptop was perfectly quiet), until I decided to play some music from YouTube. The sound was really cracking and from that point the laptop constantly makes quiet buzzing/cracking noise (it does not come from speakers!), just like HDD is reading data very fast or the fan was damaged. Sometimes music is played fine, and sometimes (i dont know what it depends on) sound is crackling even more.
Plus when the computer starts, the fan noise is quite buzzing too.
Please help, I don't know what could be the problem since it all started when I played music, I dont know what makes music crackle too! I tried to reinstall sound drivers but I guess it's not the driver, since the buzz is there even when Windows is not loaded.

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

It's a new Dell and it has been making crackling sound since I got it.
I spent an hour on the phone with a technician who restored the laptop with Windows 8.1 to an earlier point in time and it stopped crackling for the rest of the day, but the next day, the noise was back.
The worst are "ding" sounds, they have more crackle than ding. Video playback is bad but at least we can understand what is said. Youtube is bad. mp3 audio is bad. Crackle is there with earphones too.

Hello. If it made the noise right out of the box you probably should have returned it as defective during the brief return period.
Does it make the noise only when running on battery power or also when plugged into house current?

Good day. I wanted to share my experience with the DELL Inspiron 11 3147 2 in 1  with Intel N3540. I purchased from the DELL Outlet. Received in great condition. Slight pry marks where the bottom cover had been removed. I liked the form factor, the convertible feature, the processor choice and suggested battery life.
I have added,
Samsung SSD 850 EVO 250GB,
Kingston HyperX Impact 1600MHz DDR3L CL9 SODIMM 1.35V Laptop Memory HX316LS9IB/8 GB Black and
Intel 7265NGW Dual Band Wireless-AC 7265 802.11ac, Dual Band, 2x2 Wi-Fi + Bluetooth 4.0.
The tools needed,
small Phillips head screw driver,
nylon spudger pry bars, to aid in removal of the bottom pane,l to facilitate the removal and installation of the 3 items mentioned.
USB 3.0 to 2.5" SATA III Hard Drive Adapter Cable w/ UASP - SATA to USB 3.0 Converter for SSD/HDD - Hard Drive Adapter Cable
or
2.5" SATA 6gb/sHard drive enclosure with USB cable
Cloning software, (Samsung included both the migration and optimization software). You can download from Samsung website, or transfer from included disc, you will need an external optical drive.
The Samsung software at this point 8/20/2015 may not support Windows 10, which I had updated to. The migration software would not recognize the Samsung SSD as I attempted to clone the SSD. I had called Samsung Customer Service and the other suggestion is that one of the updates from Microsoft or DELL, may hide the USB connection. I used the recovery software... Read more

Answer:DELL Inspiron 11 3147 2 in 1 Upgrades

Good morning,
I have updated the 11 3147 to Windows 8.1, all updates prompted for as of 8/21/2015. Windows 10 has not been an option as of yet. I have reregistered thru the Window icon that appeared on the right bottom notification bar. I have not added any additional software other than Bitdefender Free Anti Virus and CCleaner. I deleted McAfee Livesafe, using the McAfee removal software before I cloned the Samsung SSD.
Notes on the  hardware upgrades:
Samsung SSD 850 EVO 250GB; Info from Samsung Magician software. The used space shows 40GB (Windows 8.1) free space 191GB. Total capacity as new storage disk 232.89GB. The SSD is set for Maximum Performance. The performance testing shows Sequential Read 283MB/s, Sequential Write 271MB/s, Random Read 27292IOPS and Random Write 18419IOPS.
The Samsung SSD 850 EVO has the ability to preform better. The Dell system does not support a SATA 6 GB/s (SATA3) port. The Samsung says the SSD is connected to a SATA 3 GB/s (SATA2) port. I had ran across this info on the net. The Samsung software seems to conform that.
At this point I accept the results. I don't game or run demanding software that the higher read/write scores would be beneficial to me. The benefit of using an SSD vs HDD. The SSD has no moving parts that I have to worry about as I hold or move the 11 3147. The start, opening closing of the software/app is faster than the 5400rpm HDD that came with the 11 3147.

Please only answer this specific question:
Had anyone been able to install any flavor of Windows 7 on a Dell Inspiron 11 3147 laptop?
If so, please tell me how you did it.
If you don't have specific info regarding this exact machine, please don't answer.
I've exhaustively researched how to do it and have not had success with anything I've tried. I'm pretty sure it is impossible, so at this point I'm only seeking absolute evidence to the contrary.

When I try to do it I get the BSOD stop message stating that my machine's BIOS is not fully ACPI compliant.

While I appreciate that helpful people will want to jump in and suggest possible BIOS settings and other solutions based on their experience with other machines, I honestly only want to know if anyone has successfully installed it on this machine.
Thanks so much for reading!

Today the Wi Fi has stopped working on my Inspiron 3147 2-in-1.  Internet works fine right now on the desktop and laptop we have in the house so I know the wireless router works o k  but it stopped working on Inspiron 3147.  I have tried 'function and PRNT SCR keys' because there is no switch on that computer to turn wireless on or off and looks like it is set for on, I checked settings and 'Airplane mode is off' '. I have used  my other computers today looking at the on-line manuals and quick start guide info for the Inspiron 3147 but these do not help me. I use Windows 8 and did not upgrade to Windows 10 yet on the Inspiron 3147.  What do you think is wrong ?  Please help me.  It is now about 1:00 AM our time so I am falling asleep trying to fix this.

Does anyone's 3147 (N3530) get hot? I use it while sitting on my lap and though at first the heat didn't bother me, but now its seems bothersome. I upgraded the machine to Crucial Ballistix 8GB 204-Pin DDR3 1600 (PC3 12800), 1.35v Laptop Memory and a 250 EVO SSD. I check the temps with HWMonitor and the hottest I've seen anything get to is 67 degrees Celsius. Everything is normally in the high 50s.Has anyone done a thermal re paste? I do have some IC Diamond laying around. Not sure if it would make a difference.
Video stream shuttering happens quite a bit. Any suggestions?
And does anyone else have issues with getting the bottom cover flush when putting back on (by the power button)? The corner seems to protrude a little.

Thank in advance! I tried to get all my questions in one post.

I'm having many issues with my touchpad/trackpad.
- Touchpad loses its function (scrolling, gestures) after using for a while or after sleep/standby mode.
- Touchpad keeps freezing, the pointer constantly stops moving for a short period, like 5 seconds (but I can still do right click) only when I use touchpad. I can still use external mouse normally.
Hope someone can help.

After installation of latest BIOS A09 version for Dell Inspiron 3147 I got some problems with boot.

Start (logon) screen not appear after boot and I see black screen till I do not touch screen.
PC does not start from Sleep mode, while Hibernation mode works,

No matter of Windows 8.1 or 10, drives etc. I have tried different installation of drives, settings and Windows 8.1/10.

About three months ago, my wife noticed the laptop was crashing when she'd wake it up.  The error was "Bad Pool Header."   It would reboot and everything worked fine.  I couldn't find anything online about it and I was tired of being haunted with the Windows 10 upgrade.  So I went ahead and upgraded the laptop to Windows 10 hoping the issue would resolve itself.    It didn't.  I received the same error.
Today I took some time and researched the error some more and tried to contact Dell Support.   That didn't go so well.   Since I bought a refurbished unit from Amazon, the laptop is still registered to someone else.  They won't talk to me until the warranty information is updated.  (That's a separate battle I'm fighting with Amazon.)
Anyways, I'd love to restore the laptop to the original settings but the laptop doesn't have a DVD drive nor does it have a restore partition.  There is also no recovery image saved on the drive.   So, I'm stuck unless there is a way to find out what is causing the bluescreening.
When I was troubleshooting today, I had the system checked and there was one update that installed for the chipset.   After the chipset update was installed, the issue remained, but the error changed.  "System Service Exception"    The laptop reboots and it returns to normal.

Answer:Dell Inspiron 3147 Crashing when waking up from sleep

Hi Dave,
Update the BIOS - http://dell.to/24FHltP
And reinstall the chipset drivers manually from the same site above.
Restart the system and press f12 key on startup - choose diagnostics. Let it run the diags and if you encounter any errors - make a note of the complete error and report the same to us. Also, run an extended / thorough test on the memory and HDD.
Run a stress test on the system - http://dell.to/1NEc1Y4
The system is compatible to work with Win10. If you are keen to restore the system to W8.1 - then see this link - http://bit.ly/1RMaCdK
If you have the invoice of the purchase, which states the service tag of the system - not a paypal receipt, then you could transfer the warranty ownership online here - http://dell.to/1KpVTpc
Write me a private conversation with the service tag and your contact details(Name and Email) for case records.
Let us know if you have any other queries.

Hi Guys,
I have just purchased an Dell Inspiron 3147 2in1, overall I really like my new laptop/tablet but....
A couple of things are bugging me.  I would love it if someone who also owns this laptop could confirm a few things for me.
1. Can you wake your laptop from sleep by hitting any key on the keyboard, not only by pressing the power button.  Every laptop that I have ever used can wake via keyboard although my new laptop cannot.  It seems strange that a new laptop would not have this feature.
2. Is anyone else having ghost touches on their touch screen that closes programs, deletes stuff and causes chaos.  I have found that this issue starts after closing the laptop then re-opening it.  If you sleep the computer then wake it, this fixes the problem.
3. Also I'm having problems with the USB ports on the left side of the laptop.  Some devices get recognized and some don't.  My IPhone 4 goes nuts when plugged into the one USB 3.0 port, it constantly turns on and off every half a second.  All devices work in the one USB port on the right side.
Anyways, any input would be greatly appreciated.
Cheers,
Ben

I got a notification to update my BIOS from Dell and ran the Windows installer, hoping it would help with screen issues I've been having. Since then the system is unusable. I'm running Windows 10, setup says BIOS is version A11.
It is stuck in an "automatic repair" loop and I receive a "ACPI BIOS ERROR"
I've tried:
-booting to a USB with the BIOS file to try and flash it from there, but can't access the drive via F12
-booting Legacy as well as UEFI
-removing CMOS and laptop battery

Dell Inspiron 3000 11" (3147) - 5 beeps 4 times on boot, and when it boots, there is no WIFI (network card also not listed in device manager).

All I could find on that beep code is that "5 beeps means replace CMOS battery".
But it's not "5 beeps", its "5 beeps 4 times", and my CMOS battery is fine at 3+ volts. I replaced it just in case, but it still did not help any, as expected. Any ideas?

Every time when the laptop goes to sleep mode by itself and I turn it on again, the touch screen will be partly unresponsive, to be more specific, it is the upper part of the screen. The problem is only at the screen, mouse and touchpad are working fine. Now I can solve the problem by pressing power button to let it sleep and press again to turn it on, but I don't want to do this everyday.
Anyone have answer to this? Please!! I just got it a few days ago!
Thank you.

Answer:Dell Inspiron 3147 11.6" - Touch screen 'partly' not working after auto sleep

Hey, guys, I had the partially non-responsible touch screen (top right part) + 100% CPU. What I ended up doing was a clean install of Windows 10 and NOT installing the Dell Quickset. I repeat, DO NOT install Quickset. Hardware works fine without it and I stopped getting 100% CPU after idle and touch screen works normally. The only drawback is that I get an unrecognized component (ACPI\SMO8810\1), which I suspect has to do with keyboard locking in tablet mode. This isn't the 100% full solution, but I get the impression that the Dell power plan is not coded correctly. Any questions you guys might have, let me know!

Can anyone help here?

I got a Dell Inspiron 1525 back in September. Runs on Vista.

A few weeks ago, I began noticing a crackling sound that was coming from the top left hand corner of the keyboard section of the laptop, right near where the 'Inspiron' logo is. It doesn't usually start until I've had the computer running for 30 minutes or so.

I called Dell and shipped the computer to their facility since it's still under warranty. They sent it back saying that they could not detect any problem with any of the hardware and therefore, did not fix anything. Sure enough, after getting it back and turning it on and being on it for 30 minutes or so, the sound is still there.

Everything about the computer works fine...the Internet, my progams. It isn't slow or anything. But this sound just doesn't sound right.

Does anyone have any ideas what this may be? Could it be an issue with the laptop's fans? If so, aren't the fans considered to be part of the hardware?

Thanks for any light anyone may be able to shed on this issue.

- Brian

Answer:Crackling Sound From Dell Inspiron 1525

Is laptop staying cool or did you try to update your wireless/network card? When you listening music can you check CPU usage and temperature (with temp additional program) under task manager. Also, CPU fan is not making that noise.

I have just bought a Dell Inspiron 15 7559 and it just arrived this morning. However, when I try to play any sound the speaker starts to crackle heavily. The only solution that works is plugging in headphones and unplugging them which seems to work. But once you shut down the computer, and turn it back on, this problem still exists. I have already updated the realtek hd audio driver as well as the bios. I would hate to have to return the laptop as it works flawlessly otherwise.

Answer:Speakers Crackling on Dell Inspiron 15 7559

That Realtek driver ll have an advanced option to disable audio power management. That's it.

This new Dell Inspiron 11 3147 just arrived today.
The AC Adapter is "plugged in" but the battery is "not charging."
I've looked all over for help for this, Dell Diagnostic has found no problem, and I've had trouble getting a hold of customer service. The most commonly suggested idea has been to uninstall and reinstall the Microsoft ACPI Complian Control Method Battery driver, which I have done.
The only thing I haven't messed with is the battery itself, which doesn't seem to be accessible without damaging the back, which is screwed on and secured well.
Any idea what's wrong?

Answer:Dell Inspiron 11 3147 Battery "Not Charging"

Update to my below post:
One day later, after the battery fully charged and all was well, I come back and it is back to the message "plugged in, not charging". I might see if reflashing the bios and rebooting will work again.
My original post on Dec 8, 2014:
I had this problem until this morning. In short, I updated the bios to Version A03,A03 (released Dec 2, 2014). Before that I did all the googling and messing about without success. Here's what to do:
1. Run "My Dell". You can access this by type Ctrl-Esc and then type in "My Dell" and clicking on the "My Dell" icon that comes up.
2. Click on the green "Drivers and Updates" panel. This should open a product support browser window.
3. Scroll down to the bottom beneath the section that says "These drivers match your selections" and click on the arrow next to "Bios"
4. Click on "Download file". Close all your other applications and run the file and follow the prompts. It will reboot for you at the end and the problem should be solved.
Good luck!

As you have no fans running this sounds like a power supply failure which could be internal.

I have tried burning some audio cd's and I always get crackling noises when played back. I have tried changing the writer from the original BTC to a Liteon but I get the same results. I have tried disabling antivirus, firewall etc, changed DMA settings, slower writing speeds, but no luck. Any ideas? The machine used has a 1700XP cpu, 4G HD, 256MB ram, Win98. The liteon works perfectly well in my other machine XP2400, 40G HD, 512MB ram WinXP.

Answer:burnt cd's have crackling noises

this is copy protection held within the sub-channel data on the original CDRom you are attempting to copy. Utils that you can search for include "clone cd" or "blindwrite suite" which have the ability to achieve bypassing the protection (c-dilla, copy-lok etc).If that fails then get a good CD Ripping util (click here) and "backup" your original disc by converting the tracks to .mp3 first then burn the .mp3's to disc.

So my computer seems to be making crackling noises and I was wondering what could be the problem, it sounds like it is coming from the CPU area, I was looking around and some people who said to have similar problems were directed that it was the CPU fan, I have a liquid cooled PC, not sure if it has a fan like that, I uploaded a video to youtube to let you listen to the noise and hopefully help me out.

Hi All,

I've recently installed an AGP 6800GS card, and I'm amazed at how good it is. There's a problem I've been having, though: After playing intensive games like Far Cry and FEAR for about 20 minutes, a scary hissing/crackling sound comes from the card that increases in volume and frequency, and stops as soon as I quit out of the 3D sections. It sounds like it's gonna blow!

I do have the card overclocked with Rivatuner from 350mhz core to 390mhz, and the memory up a tiny bit too. My case is pretty well cooled, and there's a PCI exhaust fan sitting right next to the card; it's temperature doesn't seem to go above 65 celsius on load.

Am I simply overclocking it too much? Or could the PSU be the problem - it's not a particularly good one, but I've never had problems with it.

Any suggestions / help would really be appreciated.

Thanks,

Rob

Every since windows 10 upgrade i have been having issues with my audio. When i start a video for the first time i will hear crackling and poping noise then it will catch up after i pause the video and play again.  Then the audio slowly goes out of sync.  At first i thought that were my speakers, but it was happening over headphones as well.  I tried the latest version of driver along with switching to the windows 10 generic audio drivers.  Anyone else having issues with this?

Just installed Windows 10 Home with the anniversary release and upgraded BIOS to A10.  Now,  the really weird part is if I power it off completely it is still running somehow because the case is warm back around the CPU vent slots.  It isn't plugged in charging, Windows goes through its shutdown normally, screen goes completely black, all lights are off, but it stays warm and eventually drains the battery.  I've also had the difficulties resuming from sleep like others have had.
Has anyone else had the "staying on after power off" issue?
Is reverting to A07 BIOS the only solution?  Is A11 coming out soon with the fix?
Thanks!

It's been a couple months since this started happening. I hear crackling/static-like noises coming from my laptop's speakers whenever sound is playing. Lately, I noticed it only happens when my CPU usage is high (at least ~70%). I hear it mostly while playing videos or even when Windows starts up. I tried reinstalling my sound driver (Conexant HD SmartAudio 221), which didn't fix the problem. Any help would be greatly appreciated!

After waiting for nearly 6 weeks, I finally got a replacement for my fried mobo (Gigabyte P55A-UD3). It's a different board but practically same as my original one except it has two eSATA ports (P55A-UD3R).

Ultimately, after replacing with the new one I'm experiencing noticeable popping or crackling noises while:
playing any videos via any media player
streaming such as youtube
gaming
I currently use a headphone via USB DAC. More importantly, I don't hear these noises while idling or doing anything that doesn't utilize audio.

After surfing for solutions, I was able to find few simple troubleshootings though non of them fixed the problem:
- Used different USB cables
- Used different USB ports as well as external hub
- Have latest driver version for the DAC
- Disable SPDIF from "recording devices"
- Disabling other audio devices from "device manager"
- Set sampling rate to something else

I also eliminated my headphone and DAC as the problem still happened for other devices. The DPC latency checker didn't help either as it showed constant green results with no drop outs.
With the new installation of mobo, every drivers and BIOS are up to date with newest version.

As a result, I'm starting to suspect the problem is caused by the mobo itself... after all, all of my headphones and DACs worked fine with my previous mobo with no issues.
With that being said, this isn't the only problem that is happening for my newly replaced mobo as there are all sorts ... Read more

Answer:Popping/crackling noises after changing mobo

Did you happen to install the Gigabyte "EasyTune" program? If you did, uninstall that. It caused me audio problems in my recording studio system that uses a Gigabyte motherboard (GAZ77X UD5H).

Other things that can contribute to the problem: Wi-Fi, a cordless phone or cell phone close by. Video card drivers, sound card drivers. Also a power supply can cause this.

But, as you have found out there is no "one fix" for the problem.

Hello!

I bought a Toshiba Qosmio F60-10Q less than a year ago and after some time I started having issues with my sound (sound quality was very bad when volume was higher than 50% and it made crackling noises etc. + my microphone wasn't working properly either).

I took it to the warranty people and they said they diagnosed it with a faulty sound card and that they would change it.

I waited about 2 weeks for the component to arrive and finally got it back. Although they told me they changed my sound card I am not quite sure if that is even possible since I am guessing it is onboard and my MAC was different to which made me think they changed to whole motherboard or something like that.

Anyway the laptop worked fine for 2-3 months and then it started having the same issues. I tried thinking back but I really can't figure out if something specific triggered the problem. I haven't had time to take it in again because I have been in an exam session and I really need my laptop atm. My question is this:

Is this a somewhat common problem and does anyone know what could be causing it? I mean if I'm doing something I shouldn't be and it's causing this sound card issues I really can't tell what it is so please any suggestion at all is well received!

Answer:Qosmio F60-10Q - Sound make crackling noises

Hello

> Although they told me they changed my sound card I am not quite sure if that is even possible since I am guessing it is onboard and my MAC was different to which made me think they changed to whole motherboard or something like that.
Don?t worry because everything was correct!
The sound card is fixed/soldered on mainboard so it?s just a sound chip on mainboard and no real card. Another MAC address would mean the guys have replaced the mainboard so sound chip is also a new one. :)

I can?t say why it happened again but it?s the same problem there would be no other way expect replacing the mainboard again. I mean in such cases where a hardware part is affected you can do nothing because you need professional help for exchanging the mainboard.

What you can do is updating the sound driver but I doubt this would help you?

Anyway, I?m sure you can clarify the problem with the technicians as fast as possible and they can tell you how long the repair would take ;)

I purchased a Dell Inspiron 3147 in March of 2015, less than two years ago, and last weekend, without warning, it died. I'm getting 7 beeps, so it sounds like a processor failure, and since I thought Dell was a reputable company, I only got the one year warranty, so now I'm screwed.
Does anyone have any tips or tricks to fix it, or should I just start the process of buying a laptop from ANY OTHER COMPANY, EVER?

Answer:INSPIRON 3147 is the WORST computer EVER

Since the mainboard and CPU are one on this system -- as they are on most notebooks - you will either need to replace the board or the system.
If you DO replace the system, one piece of advice:  DON'T repeat the mistake of buying a system with only a 1-year warranty.  You may think you're buying from a different company, but just five actual manufacturers make almost all notebooks, regardless of the name on the outside.  Dell, HP, Lenovo, Apple -- they're all built by the same pool of contractors with the same parts, and not coincidentally, there's not much of a difference in hardware failure rates between them.

i had the same problem as so many others...a 1 and nearby keys work sometimes and sometimes they don't .  Verified answer is that there is a problem on the motherboard keyboard connector(a hardware issue, and that  person said they would never buy from Dell again.  The answers from Dell were to troubleshoot BIOS and firmware, which are totally unrelated and do not solve the problem.
I think "never buy from Dell again" was a great answer...since that discussion thread was closed and that was part of the verified answer!!!! Dell did nothing to address this problem that so many people had.  I called Dell and was asked to pay about $200 for a new keyboard since my Inspiron 11 was out of warranty,  But wow, I only used this product a few times...It was like new!!!! I used this product only a few times after i bought it,
When so many people had the exact same problem, this is a product quality issue... I can't believe that Dell does not look for problems like this in the discussion threads and make it right! If Dell wants to help... let me know!

Hi,
Since installing a Dell update on about May 2 my laptop turns off when it should sleep. This happens every time the top is closed or the machine is idle for a while. Anything I'm working on is lost.
The power and sleep buttons and lid settings are all set to sleep.  Hybrid sleep is turned off.
I have tried to do a system restore but get a message saying the disc is corrupt and to run chkdsk. Chkdsk says there is nothing wrong with the disc.
I'm running an Inspiron 3147 with Windows 8.1
What's my next step please?

Answer:Inspiron 3147 turns off when it should sleep.

Hi IVANPAXTON,
In regards to the system restore, does this happen with respect to one point only or any point that you try?
Did you try chkdsk or chkdsk /r? Also, restart the system and press f12 key on startup - choose diagnostics. Let it run the diags and if you encounter any errors - make a note of the complete error and report the same to us.
For the sleep issue,
Does it occur with both auto and manual sleep?
Update the BIOS from - http://dell.to/24FHltP and reinstall the chipset drivers from the same site.
If the issue is not resolved, then download the video driver from - http://intel.ly/24EOii8 or from the support site above. Uninstall the existing video driver from device manager - restart the system and check if the sleep works fine in both auto and manual sleep mode.
Create a new local admin account and check if the sleep works fine - http://bit.ly/1YKEQDe
Keep us updated.

I want to boot from my USB DVD drive so I can clone the installed 5400 rpm hard disk to a 7200 rpm. I called tech support yesterday, they couldn't help, and said I would have to pay for advanced support. I told them that if this is Dell's policy after all the years I have done business with them, I'd prefer to return it for a refund and forget about doing business with Dell. That didn't matter, though, so I hung up.
Does anyone know how to do this without the necessity of re-installing Windows 8.1? I checked Dell Online Support and the most recent BIOS is A01, which came with the machine.
Thanks for your help.

Answer:Inspiron 11 - 3147 Bios issue

In order to boot from the DVD, you must turn off secure boot and boot in legacy mode (F2 at powerup).  Remember to change the boot back to UEFI (but don't turn secure boot back on) after cloning.
Also remember that the Dell recovery partition will no longer function after cloning - it is encrypted and the cloning process will break the encryption. The better way to do this is to have a 16G or larger flash drive.  Use the Dell backup and recovery utility on the hard drive to prepare a recovery drive, and then swap drives.  Then recover the system to the new hard drive (it will recover both the windows drive AND the recovery partition this way).

My laptop Dell Inspiron 3147 is not working. From yesterday beep sounds were coming from my laptop while switching on and off. Also while using the light in the capslock button and power light wasn't working when charging and wifi was not connecting. I troubleshooted network connection and I was told network driver need to be installed. Then I shut down the system normally. Now it is not turning on.

Answer:Inspiron 3147/3148 not working

Hi NIMMY CLEETUS,
When you press the power button, does the power led come on and stay on or does it go off after a few seconds? What was the exact # of beeps you encountered when the issue started?
Are you using an original Dell OEM Adapter? When you plug in the adapter to the system, does the adapter stay firm or does it fall off easily? Is the adapter frayed? Is there any damage on the system? Could you test with another power adapter if possible?
Does the adapter led stay on and stable or does it go off when connected to the system?
Disconnect the adapter and battery and press and hold the power button for 30 seconds to release any static power. Then test the system with the adapter only / battery only.
Press and hold the fn key + power button to turn on the system and it should initiate the diagnostics - check for any possible beep codes.
Download the service manual here if required - http://dell.to/2o3w9b1
Also, please click my DELL-username and write me a private message with the service tag and your contact details(Name and Email) for case records.

Hello!

I bought a new Dell Inspiron 11 3147. After updating to windows 10 and BIOS afterwards i discovered a problem. When system goes to sleep - no matter if its done by inactivity, closing the device or manually it won't wake up. When i press the power button pc phisicaly turns of (i can hear it does) but the screen is blank and the only way to get it working at this point is hard off by holding the power button and turning it on again. I tried many things - reinstalling drivers (by windows update and from dell support), turning off hybrid sleep, w10 quick launch,  uninstalling some software etc.  Nothing worked. My guess is the new BIOS is broken. Does anyone have any ideas about this problem or any update dates? Thanks in advance!

I have a XPS 3000 11 2 in 1 for about 2 months. Upgraded it to W10 on my 1st week.
I am facing some temporary fails on ALL KEYS ON THE LEFT SIDE of the keyboard: 1qaz, ` tab capslock, shift, fn an ctrl. Windows key also. From keys 2wsx on, including these, everything works fine.
So, not sure if it is a HW or a SW problem. It seems SW... Fail is temporary, and sometimes related to a boot session. I mean, it starts at windows lock screen... after insisting for a while, I can type the affected letter and after I sign in, it seems the keys and the hole left side come back to life, although it sometimes fail even when logged. Now I am typing normally with no fails.
Any ideia?
Thks in advance, Alex.

I've been through 2 HP laptops already. Both were returned because they had the same problem: A semi-loud tapping noise, in sync with the hard drive light on the side of the laptop. After returning the second laptop I went back to best buy and they said that there was nothing wrong with the first laptop I'd returned. Afterwards I went to Costco and bought a 3rd HP laptop which was a different model, but the problem is still there. So the question is: Should I return this laptop and boycott HP, or is this just a normal sound that HP laptops make?Video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XHDG1cMo0MA

Hello all,

Can you help me ?
My laptop has been making a weird clicking sound, sort of like high pitch crackling and buzzzing, something rapidly cycling back and forth.

Computer been very slow and sluggish.

I'm not real savvy with techie stuff, so not sure if been taken over by malware, viruses, etc. I'm not sure if this is the best forum to post. Sorry ahead of time if wrong forum.

I ran Ad-Aware, got rid of the infections.
Then I ran the Spybot S&D, removed the items found

I also Defragmented.

I did a HiJack This run. Don't know if I should post it here.

Still, the computer running very slowly. Frequently making that buzzing sound. When I click on Internet Explorer icon, it takes much longer than usual to launch. Same with other programs like MS Word.

Can you please help me ?

Answer:Computer Much Slower Than Usual, Making Crackling Noises

"Sounds" like you have a hard drive failing and possibly malware as well. The sounds you describe would point to a hard drive failing.

Just a couple months after warranty of course this fickle laptop has come up with blue screen, need of repair/recover and error 0xc0000185.  I have downloaded 8.1 from microsoft and tried to reinstall and also from my external drive with my saved recovery but the computer simply won't go there when it starts up.  Does anyone know how I can recover using either an external DVD/USB/SSD? I have most of my files backed up so a total reinstall of windows and office and everything else is acceptable although a pain, just want to use my laptop again.  Many thanks!

my 3147 inspiron crashed last week and I swapped out the hard drive and reinstalled 8.1 using the recovery disk. After windows started, I installed the network driver but I can't see any available wifi network names (wifi is working fine on my desktop so it's the laptop that's having issues).
I've tried running troubleshooting, taking the wifi card out and reseating it, reinstalling the drivers. I also did the fn key to turn wifi off and on but there's nothing onscreen that signals that anything happened.
Any suggestions for next steps?

Is it safe? A09 killed my system's configuration. I had to DOS boot, re-flash and re-install the OS because it wouldn't boot no matter what I tried. I don't feel too bad, since I read others had the same exact issue.
Currently, I'm on A06 or A07.
Seeking risk-taker feedback. Did A10 kill your system or is it running smoothly? Is it worth the risk?

P.S. My suggestion to Dell is to pull A09. Read all the complaints about it via search.

Background:
I recently pulled an Inspiron 11-3147 2-in-1 out of mothballs after 12-18 months. I received the laptop for free through Time Warner as a promotion and never found it powerful enough for day-to-day use (I always suspected TW had the machines custom built with reduced specs to make them cheaper). My idea now is to wipe the hard drive, install Ubuntu, and use it as a high-powered e-reader/internet browser when I don't need to be doing anything productive.
Issue:
When I turned the laptop on for the first time in 12-18 months, it beeped loudly, and nothing appeared on the screen. I had plugged it in only a few minutes before, so I assumed it just didn't have the juice to do anything and that the beeps were a critical battery alarm. After charging for a few hours, I tried again. Same beeps, but this time the system did boot as normal and I was able to log in.
Now knowing that the beeps weren't related to the battery, I reset the computer and paid attention: 5 beeps. Looking in the manual, I found that 5 beeps at startup indicated an internal clock power failure that could be fixed by replacing the button-cell battery on the motherboard. I purchased a replacement battery, swapped it in, and turned the system on. No change. Same beeps.
That's the short version of the main issue. If there's something simple I'm missing, like resetting the alarm somehow or some other step that wouldn't be included in the manual for some reason, let me know. I ha... Read more

If a replacement CMOS battery did not solve it -- and before going further do a reset (unplug the system, disconnect the main battery and hold the power button for 30 sec -- then it's the clock chip itself that's bad.   Unfortunately, that means a replacement system board.

hello!
I own a dell inspiron 11 3147 laptop. I've only had it for almost 2 years. My current problem now is that certain keys in my laptop keyboard won't work. So now, I mostly use my touch keyboard if I have to work on papers. They keys that aren't working are the ff: 4, 5, r, t, f, g, v,  and b. As you can see it seems to be that the whole two columns that these keys belong to are not functioning. I've updated my drivers and I recently installed the latest Windows 10 update. I installed it last July 9, 2016 so it's very recent. I thought that maybe after instaling the new updates, my keyboard will go back to normal but it still hasn't.
Also, sometimes I get very impatient so I tend to press down on the keys a bit too hard. And when I do press down on "R" and "T", my screen just goes to black and I have to restart my laptop. This should mean that it's a hardware problem, right? Or can it still be a software problem?

Please help! I've had this keyboard problem for months :(

Thanks!

FYI
I got an Inspiron 11 3147 as a warranty replacement for a 3137.
First thing I always do is wipe the hard drive and install Windows 7 due to a huge dislike of 8.
However, while trying to Install Win 7, I get a BSOD indicating "BIOS is not ACPI compatible."  This is a common error on systems that are made for Win 8, when you try to install Win 7.
Anyway,it seems Dell has locked the BIOS (A3) so that this cannot happen.  The usual way to change the BIOS settings to Install 7 on a system sold with 8 is, - change BIOS setting for UEFI boot to legacy boot ; and - disable secure boot.  This has worked on all my former Dell laptops (including the 3137) but not this one. I've done additional troubleshooting such as changing drive type to ATA, etc with no luck.  The Windows 7 image I use is a Dell OEM image that worked on my 3137 just fine. All the info I've found online pertains to changing the BIOS settings, which I've done, and possibly a faulty Windows 7 image, which I know is not the case here.
So basically, don''t expect to install Win 7 on an Inspiron 11 3147. Unfortunately for me, I won't use Win 8, so that means returning my new replacement system and keeping my 3137 with an erratic touch pad.
I'm not a fan of any company that prevents power users from changing settings. And while the folks at Dell have been great to deal with, between this and the 3 defective replacements I had up to this point, I'm done.

Answer:FYI for any Inspiron 11 3147 owners wanting to install Win 7

After reading the post above, please can anyone verify that the 3147 truly CANNOT run Windows 7? I have some programs that need Win 7, and I don't want to set up a virtual machine (not sure if that will work on 3147 if it won't install Win 7 anyway). Any info on installing Win 7 on this 3147 will be very helpful. Thanks!

Client called me and asked me to work on a seldom-used and out-of-warranty Inspiron 3147.  Seldom-used because it presented serious challenges to usablity.  Here is what I had to do to get it to be a usable computer again:
1. I disabled the facial recognition, which I found just plain awful, not ready for prime time.  Or, in simple terms, very cumbersome to use.
2. I installed ClassicShell to restore a reasonable Start button and menu, rather than the garish and useless Windows 8 tiles.
3. I changed the system paging file to the size recommended by Windows itself (3.5GB rather than less than 1GB), so the system responds, instead of literally leaving you hanging.
THIS is the FACTORY SETUP from Dell?  Who on earth implements Dell's factory setup?  Now, at least, my client has a computer that can be used, albeit at the cost of my work.

Answer:Inspiron 3147 factory setup MESS!

I wouldn't count on anything old enough to be running Windows 8 to have the factory setup -- who knows what modifications were made after the system was put into use.

Hi! So I bought this laptop, an HP Pavilion 15-au028ca for school and after around 3 weeks or so of using it my hard drive has started to make some kind of crackling noise and since I use it for school, it's a huge problem has it distract me but also people around me. So I went to best buy where I bought it and an IT confirmed that it was infact the Hard Drive making noise but because the 14 days refund had passed they would not refund it or replace it. The offered me to buy an other laptop while they send it to HP for repair since it's still convered and then refund the laptop one mine came back from HP but the problem is that I don't have the money right now to just go and buy an other 1000$ Laptop. Also, it's my everyday laptop for school, I'm studiying in computer science so I use it every day and I really can't afford to go a week (or more) without it. Now, some people proposed that I could swap the HDD for a SSD but I just wanted to know first if there was maybe an easy fix that would require me to go out an buy a 400$ SSD or could I work out with HP diretcly in order to fix my issue? I honestly don't know what to do, any help/anwser is highly appreciated. Thanks Antoine.

Hey, I recent put together this new rig. I'm using the onboard sound card for my Gigabyte GA-X58A-UD3R Rev 2.0 mobo. The sound chipset is Realtek ALC889. I've updated the latest drivers, but there is crackling/static noise when I play music.

Currently I mainly use a 2.1 speaker system. But Ive tried testing it with headphones the static/crackling noises persists. It is not constant, but it shows up periodically. Furthermore, when there is no music/sound playing the noise is not there. This leads me to believe its a hardware/driver issue and not so much a speaker/interference issue.

I'm stumped on this and any help would be appreciated, the noise is annoying.

Answer:Realtek onboard sound card: Static/Crackling noises

Do you have a wireless (wi fi) connection? They have been known to cause this. A cordless phone or cell phone sitting close by is also a potential. Video card/drivers have also been another issue.

There are many possibilites and many forum posts about this problem, here, on the Dell users forum and other internet computer forums. No "one fix" for the problem.

Hi,
I have a Dell Inspiron 11-3147 [Intel Pent. 64- bit, N3540 @2.16 GHz, 4 Gb RAM]
It's been working so well for me since new—eight months ago—and I continue to be thrilled with it. I don't plug in many USB devices (occasional Sandisk flash drive back-up), but I did observe right out of the box that it had extremely tight-fitting USB ports. Of course, back then I performed Web searches for any users sharing a similar experience, but only found a few comments about a different Dell model. I reasoned that the problem would lessen with use and familiarity. Mutual understanding between my Dell and me ;-)
I really do pamper this baby and its peripherals. That's why I'm fairly crestfallen the day after my Microsoft wireless mouse nano transceiver separated from its casing when I attempted to ever so cautiously switch ports from the USB 3.0. Fortunately, I was able to carefully remove the protruding transceiver with long needle-nose pliers and reattach the casing in order to reassign the nano to the first USB 2.0 port (right side) where it is also too tight, but is working as it should and will remain! The lower right corner tip of the USB 3 port's recessed tray is now slightly disfigured, but I'm sure this is to be expected over time on these connections, albeit ones used more frequently than mine and with far less fastidious hands.
I suppose I'm looking for people to commiserate a ... Read more

Hello,
After updating the BIOS for my Inspiron 3147 laptop, I have noticed that if I close the lid (in Windows 10 it is configured to enter Sleep mode) with my laptop at full charge battery, nothing happens when I press the power button if I had left my laptop unplugged from the power adapter.
In this case I have to plug my laptop in the power adapter and wait to be charged. This wasn't happening before the BIOS upgrade I did in August 2016.
Thoughts?

Thanks!

Answer:Inspiron 3147 - Battery draining quickly when lid is closed

Hi,
I’d advise that you load defaults in the BIOS. Please follow the steps mentioned below to load the BIOS to defaults and then run the diagnostics again on the system.

Reboot the computer.
When prompted during POST, press the <F2> key to enter the setup screen.
On the System Setup screen, press the <F9> key.
Press the <Enter> key on Yes to Load Optimized Defaults and restart the computer.

Also, I would suggest you to reinstall the Video card driver on the system. Please enter your service tag # on the link below, select the OS, then download the Video card driver from Video section onto the system and install it.
http://dell.to/18r60nI

In addition, I would suggest you to run a thorough test on the battery. You can download Support assist from the link below and run the PC CHECKUP on Battery to check for issues

Please let me know the findings.

After the Windows 10 updated to version 1709, the touchpad is not recognized. As a result, native drivers were not set. The touchpad works, but there is no skrol and other gestures. It is impossible to set the native driver and a software does not see the device. Rollback to an early Windows version 10 and everything works again.

I just purchased a refurbished Inspiron 3147. The computer does not wake from sleep mode. Instead, there is a blip of power and then the system shuts off completely. Some things I have determined through testing and observation:
- The power does come on momentarily. This is confirmed by the flicker of light in the power indicator and the brief charge indicator for a USB connected phone.
- The hard drive does not Shut Down. It just goes dead. I confirmed this by testing a handful of software items, including Open Office, Evernote and Chrome. All had recovery dialogue on restart, though there was no Windows shutdown error dialogue.
- This doesn't matter how sleep mode is initiated. All of my Power Management options are set to Sleep Mode. It happens when I initiate it by closing the laptop lid. It happens when I initiate it through the start menu or charm bar. It happens when I initiate it via the login screen.
There is another issue which may or may not be related and that is the touchpad. I'm given to understand that the touchpad is a real issue with this particular model and I intend to address it in a separate post. For the purposes of this post, I will just say that it will not initiate until I manually go in and disable/reenable the trackpad through the control panel. The trackpad settings are inaccessible on startup through the system tray even though the icon is there and clickable. It just won't load. Sometimes it takes several attempts to load it thr... Has anyone else noticed that after the A09 bios update to your 11-3147 it takes way longer to boot up? It takes on average 15 seconds of staring at the Dell logo before Windows 10 starts to boot. I installed an SSD drive once It gets to the point of the OS booting it's lightning fast...just the bios post seems exceptionally slow. I'll try reinstalling the previous bios to confirm. I'm just wondering if anyone else has had this happen also. I also have an 11-3148 and there was a bios update for it on the same day. It didn't affect it's boot speed at all and in fact seemed to cure the "plugged in not charging" issue that it had.

Answer:Inspiron 11-3147 A09 bios update - slow post

I'm using a Samsung Evo 850 256Gb.
Here's an update to this strange story: Yesterday I reverted back to A07 bios. bios went in all fine but then can't boot into windows. It doesn't see my drive. it does in the bios but not during post apparently. All boot and drive settings look the same as they were before. Tried a repair install of 10 which actually worked for me this time (previously I've only had failures for some reason). It finishes and gives me a log file of the apps and such it killed in the process. Mostly just the Dell Apps which is no big deal. Rebooted and once again boot times are nice and speedy as I was hoping. And that's not all folks! To top it all off, it now sleeps properly instead of just shutting down like I was whining about in my last post. Bizarre to say the least. This was my last ditch effort. If this had failed I was going back to the dreaded 8.1. Used it all evening as I normally would and it's working flawlessly. Only thing I notice of any mention is the battery will not show 100% charge which is what the A09 bios update fixed. No biggie. It says 99% and I know it's fully charged. It really makes me wonder how much the guys at Dell check stuff out before it's released. Seems like every computer guy that's worked for my company is the same way....fix one bug but neglect to check if the fix affected anything else and walk away.

I had numerous problems with this laptop (this one being the major one: http://en.community.dell.com/support-forums/laptop/f/3518/t/19601127) which make it pretty much unusable. While trying to somehow solve my problems, I desperately installed the "Dell Update Application". It did not suggest me to update the touchscreen which was the source of my problems, but to update BIOS. This was a huge mistake, because I lost the entire functionality of the sleep mode button. It was pretty much unfunctional untill then, but it still was the only button that could wake up laptop from sleep.
From now on, it is impossible to make the laptop go to sleep with a button press and when it does go to sleep automatically, I cannot wake it up. I can only hold the sleep/power button, lose all my data by making a hard reboot.
After the BIOS update, Windows won’t recognise the sleep/power button at all under "Power Settings". It won’t make laptop go to sleep, hybernate

Hello again everyone! I have a computer that SHOULD be running amazingly well, and it does for the most part. I really have NOTHING on here, it is a Dell customized PC, only running 28 processes regularly. Here are the specs:

Dell Dimension DIM4600
Pentium 4 CPU 3.00 GhZ
1.00 GB RAM
Windows XP Home Edition 2002

So, everything runs fine, I have a wireless Linksys router which I JUST upgraded to the latest firmwire and everything, brand new speakers, an external MyBook 500GB USB Hard Drive which holds my music.

Everything was running great, but my music pops and crackles id say about every 10 seconds. I also use a Midi Controller Keyboard (Keystation 61es by M-Audio), I play the M-Tron software and it crackles louder than hell when going on a note for longer than 3 seconds. It is all in and out, on and off.

I have no idea what could be causing it, people have told me it is the CPU and the computer is struggling...but it just does not make sense, I am barely running anything on here, my processes are all normal and everything, the Linksys wireless was a hog for a while but the firmwire fixed it up a lot.

Does anyone have any ideas or can help me? Also, all of the midi keyboard software is detached from the external HD, the external HD is JUST music, so it has no connection to the popping and crackling of the M-Tron software with the keystation 61es!

Thank you for any help anyone can give!

Answer:Awful crackling/popping noises consistent in music and midi-apps...

Update:

I have tested old speakers with the OLD audio card, which is still installed above my new Audiphile one. Old speakers work PERFECTLY, so it is NOT the CPU or PC. It is either the SPEAKERS or the AUDIOPHILE sound card. How do I find out? I have no other speakers that connect to the Audiophile card, and I have no other PC with a card that can test the speakers.

Anyone have an educated decision? A popping noise every 10 seconds or so, on and off, sometimes never happens...audiocard most likely, right? The speakers were bought brand new, M-Audio Studio Pro 3's. They seem just fine.

Any ideas?

Last weekend my laptop started making clicking, crackling, loud noises from the left side area.  I called and was told that I could bring it to a local place.  Called on Monday and discovered that no, they don't do personal repairs.  Called Lenovo back and ended up sending it in.  Both guys I talked to said they thought it was the fan.  Got it back today, turned it on, and discovered that it's still making the same sounds.  I've had fan problems before that resolved after blowing out every possible vent, etc with compressed air.  Instead of fixing the fan, they replaced the ODD (CD Rom) - not even anywhere near where the noise is coming from.  Did they not even turn it on?  It started making noises within seconds of my turning it on.  These are not normal noises - can't even hear the TV.  My last Thinkpad died because of the fan.  I'm so mad, I lost a day last week because they told me this place could fix it, and now I have to lose another week to send it back again.  Anybody have any idea what this could be?  I want to have a better description to include when I send it in this time.  I have a really hard time describing the noise.  I just want it to be fixed!

I am trying to video chat with my girlfriend over the computer. She has a Satellite M305D-s4830 with a built in camera and mic. Her mic seems not to work correctly. It makes loud crackling noises that make it extremely difficult to hear her. Skype, too, keeps displaying a popup telling her that there is a lot of background noise.

It makes this noise regardless of whether she is speaking or not, or ether there is any ambient noise in the room. It does however, seem to be worse when the laptop is resting on her lap.

We are looking to rid that terrible noise coming from the mic. Any suggestions? IS there some sort of software that allows her to calibrate the mic at all? Or is it just faulty?

Answer:Satellite M305d-s4830 - microphone makes loud crackling noises

Tell here to right click on the speaker icon in the task bar, select recording devices then go to properties of the microphone set as default, adjust the volume settings, max out the volume settings then add about 10% boost, that is what i did when i had similar problem with skype. In skype tell here to go to options then audio settings and make sure the right device is selected under microphone then save, everything should be working ok now.

bball 1561 i also have a problem and was wondering if you could help, recently i reinstalled vista to the same laptop that you gf has but i could no t locate the mic drivers, so i was wondering if it would be possible if you could ask you or your gf to send me a copy of the drivers they aren't big so they won't take long to send

Hello,
As with everyone with these laptop models, I have the issue where a part of the screen becomes unusable and starts doing ghost touches.
I've isolated the issue to TWO particular devices and I've made a script to fix this issue everytime it happens.
THE PROBLEM STARTS when the touchpad and/or screen stops receiving power (at least 5 seconds), like for example when you close the lid, or when it goes into suspend mode. When powering it back again, the problem starts.
My partial solution evidences that this is A DRIVER ISSUE. Stopping and restarting the problematic devices fixes it.
To automate this process, here's the Windows batch script that I run everytime I resume power of my laptop. It requires Microsoft's DEVCON utility to run.
devcon disable *USB*0396*devcon disable *ACPI*DLL068E*devcon enable *USB*0396*devcon enable *ACPI*DLL068E*
I can provide more specific info if a Dell engineer/s gets the proper attention to this issue.
Thanks.

Hi,
I have 3 issues with my Dell 3147 laptop.
The first one has to do with the keyboard and touchpad. For no apparent reason, the touchpad will disable and re-enable itself and in the process the physical keyboard will completely disable and won't enable again unless I restart the laptop
Second issue has to do with the sleep mode. Whenever I put the laptop on sleep mode I cannot go back to my session and have to press the power button for several seconds until the laptop resets/restarts completely.
Third issue has to do with the screen. It will flip upside-down without me doing anything, which means that I need to manually revert it using the keyboard shortcut everytime.
Appreciate any help.
My laptop is still under warranty, only bought it 10 months ago.
Thanks,
Ioannis

Hi, whenever I fold the keyboard part of my laptop under the screen, and the touchpad and keyboard are disabled, i.e. tablet mode, my wifi connectivity weakens.  Using the Wifi Analyzer app, my strength of signal is shown as -36 dBm or so when I'm using the laptop as one normally would, with the keyboard in front of the screen.  But when I flip the keyboard under, I can watch the signal drop in the app, down to -77 dBm.  This occurs when I'm standing next to my router, and no matter what orientation I place the computer (away from my body, upsdie down, right next to the router, etc.); the signal strength remains in the weakened state.  When I flip the keyboard back to normal "laptop mode," the signal suddenly increases again to around -36 dBm.
My guess is that something is happening with the power; maybe the wireless card gets less power, for some reason, when I fold the keyboard under.  I have tried updating the wireless driver and the Quickset software.  I've also checked the power settings, and the wireless is getting "maximum power."  Finally, I've unticked the "Allow the computer to turn off this device to save power" box in Device Manager for the wireless.  None of these seem to make a difference.
Any thoughts on what is happening and/or how to fix this?
Many thanks.

I found an old Dell Inspiron 530a in my house, it was stored because it didn’t work anymore, so I got in the job of restoring it. I found out the problem was the PSU, so I replaced it and it worked fine for about a week but 2 days ago, the computer froze for almost 2 hours, so I turned off the CPU. After that, the computer does not want to boot, I press the power button on the front of the PC, and it remains in an orange light, and in the inside, there is also another orange light in the Motherboard. The fans start very loudly and don’t stop until I unplug the CPU or I turn it off from the power button. I have tried these “solutions” for what I think is the problem:

Removing the Motherboard battery
Removing the RAM
Disconnecting the 24-pin from the motherboard
Disconnecting everything from the PSU
Switching the jumpers near the batteries

I don’t know what the problem might be, but I am almost sure that the PSU is not, since I bought it with a higher capacity than the original PSU and I have done the tests with a jumper in the 24-pin connector
The new PSU is a  “Coolmax V-500 Series 500W 120mm ATX Power Supply” and everything else are original Inspiron 530a parts.
Thanks for any assistance you can give me

Hi--I'm new to this site, so please excuse me for being super computer illiterate. My laptop, Inspiron 15-3558, has been great until recently. About 3 weeks ago, a message came up on the screen saying that my adapter is not being recognized and is not charging my battery. Since I almost always use the computer plugged in, I didn't know about this until I looked at the battery and it was at 22% and not charging. However, the computer was running fine when plugged in, except for one strange thing. When watching a live streamed program, any speaking or loud sounds are accompanied by pretty loud static. If there is no audio going on, there is no static. Even stranger, if I open another tab, and this new page is on top of the page with the audio, the static stops. Right now, I am listening to CNN live streamed news, while typing on this window. If I click on the page with the news to bring it on top to view, the static starts up again. Also, since all this started, I noticed that when loading pages, which used to take hardly any time at all, now are very slow. I spoke with Dell support, and they want me to send it in. I wouldn't mind doing that because the laptop is still under warranty. However, I work from home, and if I don't have the computer, I won't be able to work the whole time they have it. So I want to see if there is anything I can try before I resort to sending it in. I hope that my post isn't too confusing or too long. Like I said, I can use a ... Read more

I recently bought a Dell inspiron 5559 (June 1, 2017). I then noticed that whenever I play audio like music or videos and plug the adapter out, I would hear a crackling sound, sounds as if its coming from the speakers. When I pause the sound and unplug then play audio the sound is made so I'm guessing the problem seems to exist whether I play audio or not. No matter where I plug the adapter out, it makes that sound. I'm worried that it might destroy the laptop, or that this is a defect that might start a fire if its a lack in how the adapter was made. It is a 45 w adapter according to what is labelled on it. sometimes i get a message saying "adapter is not recognized. system performance will be impacted etc" and I guess it happens if I don't plug the cord in properly? or is it not suppose to say that at all? Nonetheless, my main worry is the sound the laptop makes when I unplug the adapter. It goes on for maybe 3 or 4 seconds and sounds like a radio transceiver. Please comment if you know what this means, Thank you.

Hello everyone,

Both the laptops Dell Inspiron 15R and Dell Inspiron 7548 came with 6 GB of RAM. I'd like to upgrade it to at least 12 GB by replacing the 2 GB dimms in both laptops with 8 GB dimms.

Was wondering whether it is safe and okay to combine different memory modules from different manufacturers.

I'm also leaving the US next week and so would prefer getting RAM that's more reliable and wouldn't mess up the laptops.

Could you guys please recommend which ones you'd get? I've bought Samsung and Crucial in the past and didn't have any issues.

Here's the existing RAM information from CPU–Z:

Inspiron 15R:

Inspiron 7548:

Based on the above information, could you please recommend the sticks that you would get, preferably from Amazon?

Dell's upgrade page for Inspiron 15R recommends this one:

Dell 8 GB Certified Replacement Memory Module for Select Dell Systems - 1600MHz LV SODIMM : Memory | Dell which is 1600 MHz.

So can I get this one for that laptop: Kingston Technology 8GB 1600MHz DDR3L (PC3-12800) 1.35V Non-ECC CL11 SODIMM Intel Laptop Memory KVR16LS11/8 at Amazon.com

This would match the manufacturer of the existing stick (Kingston).

Dell's upgrade page recommended the same stick for Dell Inspiron 7548 as well.

Since I wasn't able to locate Hyundai's 8GB stick, is it okay if I get Kingston or Crucial's stick:

My Dell Inspiron 2350 is 2 years old. I had to replace the fan last December 2016, and now the fan has started making the same sounds again today - it's much louder than usual.  I did open the case and clean out all of the vents.  I had a local authorized computer center replace the original fan to avoid the minimum of 2 weeks to send to Dell because I use it for my business.   I would have done this  replacement myself, but the fan cannot be bought by the general public and is proprietary.   Note that in October 2016 and last week May 2017 I had some type of issue where the Dell would not successfully start Windows, so I had to reinstall Windows 10 from scratch.  Both times the boot segment was also bad and none of the recovery options would work.   It has been a bit of a  nightmare with this computer.  I'm not sure if I'm just really unlucky, or Windows is the issue, or if this Dell is just a piece of *** since I've had MANY computers before this (mostly HP's) and I've never had any of these issues before and I've used PC's since the later 80's.

Over the last 2 days I have been having a problem as indicated in the title of this post. The fault has rectified itself 3 times, but again today, it is back to "battery plugged in, not charging." As I am running the laptop (Windows Vista Home Premium; 32 bit) on the adapter without problems, I assume that the adapter itself may not be faulty.
I also have a Dell Inspiron 630M laptop running Windows 7.  Can I safely use that adapter with the Vista laptop, without causing damage to the Vista ?  If it is safe to do so, and the battery on the Vista starts charging, then it would indicate that the Vista adapter/charger has some kind of fault.
Hoping someone can give me some guidance. Thanks.

Answer:Dell Inspiron 1545 laptop. Battery plugged in not charging. Can I use adapter from a Dell Inspiron 630M laptop ?

If the adapter has the same plug and the same or higher power rating, you can swap them.
Check to see whether the 1545 recognizes the AC adapter or whether it shows unknown (F2 at powerup).  If it shows unknown with two different adapters, you have a bad power jack or a bad mainboard.

Hi,
I bought a new Dell Inspiron 5559 i7 6th gen Laptop on 1st November, I faced the distorting and crackling issue in the beginning but i checked the solutions here and switched the realtek driver to the windows default driver and it was working well until today. I have tested my dell speakers on various test videos available online and the general speaker configure option of windows, laptops right speaker is working good but left produces a crackling noise at high pitch sound. Please tell me what should i do? I have done multiple reinstalls of the driver but nothing worked. I have decided that its a hardware fault, just trying my luck here.

Answer:Inspiron 15 5559 i7 6th gen, left speaker sound crackling on high levels

Hi virengupta13,Thanks for posting. If the noise is only coming through one of the speakers and it is not there when you listen through headphones, then the speaker probably needs to be replaced. If you are still under warranty you can contact Tech Support, but before you do remove all media players except Windows Media Player, or else you will be denied warranty service.

Dell 2-in-1 3147:
The "DELL Pointing Devices" dialog shows a "Disable Touchpad when USB Mouse Present" checkbox. If this checkbox is clear, the touchpad works properly. When this checkbox is marked, the touchpad does not work at all.
I have tried both USB and Bluetooth mice, and neither one allows the proper action: the touchpad should be enabled without a mouse, and the touchpad should be disabled with a mouse.  That's how it works on other systems.  It just doesn't work at all on this system.
I suspect there is some interaction between the touchpad and the touchscreen that is interfering with this setting.  But I have another laptop with a touchpad and a touchscreen, and the mouse detection works there (it's not a DELL).
Yes, I have toyed with the idea of deleting the DELL touchpad control application and installing a "stock" Synaptics touchpad driver.  But I don't want the DELL  "update" app to overwrite it with the DELL touchpad control app every time it sees "the wrong driver" loaded.  And I don't want to take the chance that the touchpad driver and the touchscreen driver are somehow linked together, thus disabling one when I disable the other.
Any ideas on how to get the "Disable Touchpad when USB Mouse Present" action working would be welcome.

Hi, Dell Community,I have some problems with the sound on a Dell Inspiron 15 7577 running Windows 10 Pro Creators Update (with the latest quality updates), all latest drivers installed. The laptop is configured with i7, 16GB, 256 SSD + 1TB, GTX 1060.First: I have discovered that if I plug in external speakers after I have booted the laptop and if I adjust the volume or play a Youtube video for example, there is a static glitchy sound before the audio starts - as if the sound card is activated. A quieter noise is heard when the audio stops - again, as if the sound card is shut down (to conserve battery?) If I boot the laptop with the speakers plugged in, this doesn't happen, so I believe it's a matter of a software glitch that should be addressed in a future BIOS update. Of course I have tested the speakers separately and they're fine. All of this happens with the laptop plugged in. The issue is resolved if you put the laptop to sleep and then wake it again. Still, it's quite inconvenient.Second: I have noticed serious lagginess with the notification sounds. If I am playing some music, it seems the notifications are OK and on time. But if no sound is playing the UAC prompts or confirmation prompt sounds play 1-2 seconds after the popup appears or they don't play at all. Taskbar notifications seem to work a bit better. Maybe again it's a matter of keeping the sound card *alive*?Does anyone have the same problems? I believe these are software bugs that ne... Read more

I recently bought dell 5577 and the audio seems to crackle when i play music. I tried restoring the driver to the native microsoft one but the problem still persists. What to do?

Hoping for some insight into my speaker issue.

My right laptop speaker stopped playing sound and started to crackle sporadically. When it does crackle its quite loud - I plug in headphones and the crackle continues through the right earpiece. Left speaker works fine (headphone as well.)

wondering if this software or hardware failure? The headphone matching the crackling makes me wonder.

My boyfriend formatted my computer and then put all the drivers back - but the sound driver didnt look right to me (was unfamiliar) even though Dell's website said it was correct. Crystal WDM Audio. I can't remember what it said before - but crystal doesn't seem familiar as i mentionned.
The following appears under device manager for Sound, video and game controllers:
audio codec
crystal WDM audio Codec
legacy Audio drivers
legacy video Capture devices
Medial control devices
Video codecs

(pentium 4 1.8ghz 512 MB of ram - windows XP professional 2002 service pack 3 )

Any thoughts on where to start (other than use the whole laptop as a 'noisy' paperweight) would be most helpful.

Thank you.

Hi!. I've installed an update today and I've got a cracling sound after. It directly depends on the volume. It is very annoying.

Hello,

I have been having a problem with my audio output from both the headphones and the speakers on my Windows 10 pc. I read a post from Jimbo (in think) where he listed some solutions to a lot of recent problems. He suggested switching my driver from the Realtek audio driver to the Windows native driver.
I may need help to do that. I was going to ask if someone would post instruction for how to do this.

Thanks,
-Lindsay

Answer:Inspiron 13 5000 series - Audio crackling noise (Instructions for switching from Realtek to Windows native driver)

Hello.
1. Open the Device Manager.2. Expand the "Sound, Video & Game Controllers" section.3. Right click on "Realtek High Definition Audio" and select to uninstall.4. Put a check mark in the option to delete the driver software, and then ok.5. Restart the laptop and go back to the Device Manager and check again for a Realtek driver. Keep uninstalling & restarting until Realtek High Definition Audio no longer appears under Sound...Controllers.Windows will have installed its native driver when it could not find the Realtek files during the re-start. Sometimes it takes more than one attempt for this process to happen, because sometimes there are files for additional versions of the Realtek driver on the hard drive and they have to be removed one version at a time.

I have a Dell Inspiron 530 running windows XP.  Today it started making random clicking noises.  Any ideas on what to check?  PC seems to be running fine.  Thanks.

Answer:Random clicking noises on dell

Immediate priority - backup your data, it could be a sign a hard drive is about to give up the ghost. Even if it isn't, having your data backed up regularly is good for the peace of mind.

Clicking noises are only made by moving items, and there aren't many in a computer. Typically two or more fans and the hard drive(s). As a check i would do in this order -

1  Back up your data.

2  Check your fans for general cleanliness and anything fouling them, and clean out any accumulation of dust or dirt inside the case. It's a desktop, so the side comes off for ease of access Soft brush and a can of compressed air for cleaning. Don't dismantle the PSU to get at the fan inside it - just blow / suck any dust inside it out. Have a good look around to see if there is any cabling or any loose item that could be contacting the fan blades - it's amazing the things that have been found inside computer cases !

3  Finally, if you are happy with the state of cleanliness and that nothing is contacting fan blades, then you might consider your hard drive. A good starting point would be to install and run Speccy which you can get from here -

http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/download/speccy/

If Speccy suggest there might be problems then there are plenty of more advanced diagnostic tools around - post back. But I think your clicking is more likely connected with your fans in some way.

But back up your data in any case !

Hello all...
This is my first post on this forum in a desperate attempt to fix my audio problem. I have been reading forums and attempting fixes for days with no avail. I hope someone here can help me :(

For about one week now my sound has been crackling/is very distorted... After reading up on forums many people have said the main cause to this problem was a driver incompatibility issue between windows vista and dell sigmatel cards. I have attempted to try and unplug/replug in the speakers while also checking checking for a possible short along the line and found nothing. I then moved onto uninstalling the sigmatel audio driver from sound drivers as well as the high definition sound codec from my drivers menu and tried to install just about every driver I could find off the internet and nothing has worked. I read on one forum that someone uninstalled and reinstalled their ATI drivers and it worked for them so I tried this as well since I have an ATI graphics card and of course it did not work either. I run an analog out from my graphics card to my TV which I use as my main monitor, when I turn up the speakers on my tv I encounter the same distortion, this is why I'm almost positive its a software issue and not hardware. I tried playing a movie through my TV with a dvd player and it was fine, and I also played music through my speakers with my ipod and no distortion. The only time there is distortion is when Im using my computer. I am extremely frustrated at ... Read more

Hello,

I just bought a Dell XPS 15 (9550). When I try to listen to any kind of music on the browser, or play YouTube videos, I get a nasty crackling, heavy static sound over the audio.
Does anyone have a fix for this issue?

I have had the 7559 for about 6-8 months. I never had this audio popping or crackling issue till now. I recently reset my windows pc and started with a fresh install. Before that I never had the audio crackling when watching videos or listening to music. However after I factory reset my laptop and installed the drivers I've noticed the popping sound when watching something.  I have this driver installed;  http://www.dell.com/support/home/us/en/19/Drivers/DriversDetails?driverId=956D8
I have uninstalled all audio drivers I can, restarted my pc and uninstalled more audio drivers that install themselves and installed the dell driver. But after 2-3 days the issue comes back and the popping can be heard. I do not have any other dell software installed. I uninstalled everything thats dell. I've seen other people with issues and followed their steps and uninstalled all the dell stuff, messed around with my regedit to disable the pwermgnt in realtek but nothing. If I reinstall the drivers, the issue comes back after a few days.

Anyone know what to do? I don't think its something with my speakers just bad software/drivers

So I just recently noticed this problem. Every time I startup my system, that's when it occurs. It seems that I'm not the only one experiencing this issue since I've researched the issue and others are experiencing a similar situation. I tried playing some audio, but speakers seem to be fine.
Anyone know a resolution?

Second problem is when I am gaming (mostly gta 5) the audio is so bad , worst then in the first problem , its loud and very annoying ,its bugs a lot , and the crackling hurts my ears , im scared that it could affect the speakers. If I put on headphones the problem is still the same so it cant but a speaker problem.

Answer:Audio bugging/crackling on Dell XPS 15 (9550)

Are you saying the crackling does not depend on volume level or do you just run your system at high volume levels?
If your situation has more than one volume control, such as WMP or iTunes, do you have the utilities volume and the output volume turned up?
