Dell Precision T3600 Power Supply (PSU) amber light issue

Question: Dell Precision T3600 Power Supply (PSU) amber light issue

I have to 2 Dell Precision T3600 computers that only power on after the second try.
If you press the power button first time: the power button get's a amber light & 1 3 4 diagnostic get a flickering amber light.
If you turn the computer off and press the power button again it will turn on and work as normal.
I have been able to diagnose that the PSU is the problem.
I would like to know if I can continue to use these desktops in their current state? Are there any potential consequences / risks involved?
Also can the PSU can be repaired? If so how?

Thank you in advance.

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Answer: Dell Precision T3600 Power Supply (PSU) amber light issue

Manual indicates it may be PSU cable related:

1- Blink 2- Off 3- Blink 4- Blink

PSU Cable Failure
All PSU cables may not be properly connected to system board. (PS_ON asserted, missing a main power rail)

Did you try to reseat the motherboard's PSU cable(s)?

I just picked up a used T3600 and upgraded to 64GB of ECC RAM (4X 16GB ECC DIMMs). Now I get a message at POST saying recent hardware changes require an upgrade to the power supply.
Will an 825 watt or 1300 watt supply from a T5600 work in the T3600?  Can anyone confirm compatibility in a T3600?
It looks like the T3600 originally shipped with a 425W or a 635W supply.
Thanks in advance!

Answer:Dell Precision T3600 Power Supply Options?

Hi _erin,
The T3600 originally shipped with a 425W or 635W PSU, whilst the T5600 shipped with a 635W or 825W. The 635W model is cross-compatible (Dell part numbers: 1K45H, NVC7F) so the 825W (Dell part numbers: DR5JD, CVMY8 ) shouldn't present any issues (however, it isn't a supported configuration)

Hello I tried to install a power supply with my dell now I get a steady amber light after I removed the power supply since it had showed me an amber light. With the old power supply, I still get the steady amber light. I noticed that on the LED in the back, I got a yellowish amber colored light as well. With the new power supply it didn't have the exact four pin layout of my old one but had an eight pin layout that was seperated so that I could ease a four pin in with my computer. Did this blow out the motherboard? The major thing I did was remove the heatsink which had pins connected to it when I tried to install this video card but I noticed that some of the pins bent out of shape so I got a new heatsink only this time the heatsink I recieved has no pins. I installed the heatsink and tried to boot the pc but it won't boot only the fan spins and none of the indicator lights in the front turn on. Is the motherboard or processor dead? Thanks.

Hello to all the experts...I recently just logged off and shut down my computer. When I went to power it back on, I get a steady diagnostic 2,3,4 green flashing and solid amber power on/off light. Replaced power supply with refurbished, still the same problem. Then Dell support says to try and replace the input/output board so, ordered that one with refurbished with new cables, same issue. Some other things done were removing the CMOS battery and re-start, no luck, re-seated all memory, no luck, checked all connections, good...I am told it is possibly the motherboard but, just want see if anyone has any idea's before I order one of those...Thanks in advance for any support provided!!!

Answer:Dell Precision T5500 flashing 2,3,4 and Amber light

Hi RT51007,
Here's your service manual: ftp://ftp.dell.com/Manuals/Common/precision-t5500_setup%20guide_en-us.pdf
Those diagnostic lights indicate "USB subsystem configuration activity in progress or USB subsystem failure" according to your service manual. So a motherboard replacement may be necessary.

My mom gave me a Dell Dimension 4700 computer that was acting up. She said it would turn it's self off randomly and she thought it was a virus. When I brought the computer to my place, it powered on once, then I went to turn it on again and nothing. No lights, no power what so ever. So after doing some research I bought a new power supply for it. I just replaced the power supply and plugged the computer in and now there is a blinking amber light in the front and a solid green light on the motherboard but it won't turn on. I have checked all of the connections and they are properly seated. Any ideas what is causing the problem?

I checked T3600 and 3610 - the only difference is BIOS firmware, even BIOS chips are the same. T3600 has Intel ME firmware 7th version - that is why Xeon v2 are not recognized by the 3600 system, they need later 8th version of ME. Upgrade of ME formware is a difficult procedure  - You need to fit the size and other attributes of old ME region. The simpliest way would be to read both BIOS chips from 3610 motherboard and clean data region in ME but I don't have any T3610 systems. Another way is to analyze BIOS file for T3610 and drag out the firmware for T3600. If anybody has T3610 - please reply

Hello All,
I have a Dell XPS 8500 tower system.   My original issue started when i got 'no bootable device found' during bootup.  I had updated 3 month before to Win 10.  I changed HD but it did not appear to be the issue.   Put original HD back and modified BIOS several times, which at times it would start successfully but it would crash after a couple of days and i would get 'no boot device found' again.  Now, when i try to start PC, plug in power cord I get amber color light in power button.  Mobo light is also amber color.
Any feedback will be greatly appreciated.

System will not power on at all, and the power light displays the dreaded blinking amber light. It's getting no power at all, and the PSU has been ruled out because I tested the machine with another known working PSU. I have also reseated the RAM, video card, and CPU as well as reseating all power cables and still nothing. I'm trying to find another socket 775 P4 for testing, but haven't come up with one yet. Am I looking at a defective MOBO here, or does anyone have any other troubleshooting ideas?

Thanks,

Anthony

Hello,

I am dazed with this problem. Trying to find the solution on all the forums.

My brother owns a Dell Desktop computer and suddenly it stopped working.

- The Power button light is flashing continuously.
- The green light on the motherboard is perfectly on.
- The port light where the telephone wire goes and the usb port next to it on the motherboard is blinking continuously.
- The processor is not starting.
- If I remove the power cord, the lights mentioned above and same for 15 seconds.

What must be the possible problem.

MAny Thanks in advance

Karthik

Answer:Dell PC not starting: amber flashing power light

You would be dazed again, because this is probably caused by a failing power supply. The blinking power button is a good clue. The green LED on the motherboard simply means that you have a power cord plugged in... It could be a bad motherboard too, but power supplies are easier to replace and cheaper to start with

Hi & Thanks for reading my question,

I have a Dell e510 I am trying to fix for a friend. When power is turned on, the power light flashes green for an instant, then continues to flash amber. Nothing at all appears on the monitor. It goes to flashing amber in a sec or 2.

I have unplugged all the components and removed the memory so that I have just the motherboard and video card. I have replaced the Power supply. I have remocved the CMOS battery. Still having the problem. Is it possible that a bad or no hard drive (I have the power unplugged to the hard drive at this point). Would cause a Dell E510 not to POST.

Thanks!

Answer:Problem with Dell XPS 400 amber flashing power light

This occurs when there is a hardware issue. If you change anything then goback and check to see if it was correctly installed. (Reseat memory for example)Could be any hardware including the power supply, loose cables, video card ect..

Green LED on the back just means power is available not that power supply is ok.

I have A Dell Dimension 4400. It's been a pain in the butt to power on lately. Mainly I keep it on. Every now and then my video display screen goes wacky and the resolution changes by itself and the icons get BIGGER.. So I reboot..

It takes 15 - 20 tries to get started (thats just why I leave it on).. Nevertheless, the power light seems to stay yellow and I simply walk away. 15 -20 min later it just boots up. No idea why it takes so long..

Well about 2hrs ago the display went nuts. Lost all the color. I took apart the PC and not surprised, The video card was very LOOSE (almost out) I took EVERY connection inside the PC apart and cleaned them. I reseated every cable & card in the system. Everything's nice and tight.

I go to reboot (power up) and the Yellow (amber) light comes on the power botton. No beeps, No green lights, all 4 lights on the back of the PC are Out, No fans run, no CD light, No CD power. Just a Yellow (amber) solid light on the power button.

At this point I open back up the box and take put the button cell battery (waite 10 min) then put back. I took ALL the connections off for the second time, and all is tight. I power up, same thing. Yellow (amber) light. No beeps no nothing.. I even changed out power cords and different outlets..

The Power Supply fan is about 1yr old (i'm sure that means nothing) About the only thing I dident do is the Jumper test for Power Supply..

Any thoughts?
Thanks

Answer:Dell Dimension 4400 yellow (amber) light NO POWER

PSU or motherboard issues. Sound to me like dead PSU but the fact that you have the amber light on the front says that you are getting some sort of powerfrom your PSU.

1. Test your PSU with a multi meter. A good guide can be found here

2. Look on your motherboard for the green power LED that identified that your MB is getting power (Note: it usually a small rectangular LED not a big traditional round one).

If your PSU has power on the 24pin ATX connector and the power LED on your MB is out you have a dead MB

3. It could simply be that the power push button has become disconnected, is broken or is on the wron connector. Consult your motherboard manual to find out what pins it should be connected to. make sure it is connected properly. If it is connected properly remove the connecter and short the two pins with a paper clip (This has the same effect as pushing the push button) and it should boot your PC.

Hope this helps.

EDIT: I you dont have you MB manual post you make and model and we will do the rest!!

My refurbished dell optiplex GX280 worked fine until a month or so ago when I moved it to another room in my home. When I powered up, the power light was blinking amber. I tried all of the options that did not require buying new parts du to financial reasons, so it's sat since then.

I just decided to look at it again and powered it on. Everything seemed to start OK but no dispay. The diagnostic lights indicated faulty memory. I then located and removed the faulty DIMMM, and it started right up.

About ten minutes later the computer shut off by itself back to the blinking amber power light.

Any info would be appreciated Thank you. :grinthumb

Did some searching on here and tried a couple of things. Turned computer on earlier and just got a black screen and two green lights on front. Turned off power from back(because power button on front didn't work), powered back on and an amber light came on and green light on the right. I can hear the fan running and I can open doors on my disc drives so i'm thinking it's not the PSU, plus I had replaced that from the original one when it failed a couple years ago. Another person suggested a motherboard test so I removed all the cards and disconnected all the drives like they said, powered back up and the solid amber light is now solid green. What can I try next?

Hallo!

As a total DELL-Lover I only have such Machines around.
I just wanted to build up a OP 760 for my little son.

When I plug the power cort, the diagnostic LEDs 2 3 4 keep flashing while the power LED is amber.
System has only orgiginal DELL components, no add-on cards.

I checked out two CPU types:
intel E8600 and E7300

Also, I tried without any CPU - then, the diagnostic lights for a missing CPU light up.

I would be so perfect if there would be any solution for this.

Anyone knows how to fix that?

Good afternoon, couple of days ago my computer which is not paid off yet and out of warranty went into a no boot with a soiid Amber light. When I cracked open the case I found my cpu fan was nearly frozen very stiff to turn. I cleaned it out but now curious if my cpu died or the PSU? The interesting part if I unplug all external perpherals from the computer and test it get the solid amber light and on the back by the PSU the green light is out as soon as I turn on the power. If I unplug the power let the system discharge then plug the power back in before turning on the power the green light on the PSU is lit.
Does this sound like a PSU issue? Could it be the CPU? I'm getting no post beeps or anything powering up. Also is this a specialized PSU or can I use any standard ATX PSU this is in a mid tower. The service code is <ADMIN NOTE:Service tag removed per privacy policy>.

Does the processor heatsink fan rotate freely?
Does the power supply fan work?
A solid amber power light indicates there may be a power problem or an internal device malfunction.
The Inspiron 530 Troubleshooter and Diagnostic Codes are HERE.
Most generic standard ATX power supply units can be installed, with either a 24-pin or 20+4-pin main motherboard power connector, with or without the on/off switch.
You should be able to buy a compatible power supply from either a local or online computer store.
Note: A power supply with four SATA power connectors, is required.
The power supply replacement procedure is HERE <ADMIN NOTE: Broken link has been removed from this post by Dell>

Hello. So my Dell dimension 4600 just lost mointor/video signal one day. All the fans, drives and CPU were still workin away. I figured ok great my video card is blown(in my case the MB). I have unplugged everything other than the CPU, main and second power to MB. I am getting no error beeps. I am so lost here!! I need some help please!! Thanx

Answer:Dell 4600 solid power amber light - no signal to monitor..help!

I would have tried another monitor before buying another board.Try hooking up a different monitor to the computer.  If that doesn't work try another monitor cable. If you have no other monitor, try hooking up your current monitor to another computer.  If it works then it means there's something going on with your computer.  If not, then the problem is most likely that  your monitor is bad.

First i cleaned the inside of the desktop from dust. I checked the battery it was fine ( 3V as indicated) then i checked rams. Also fine. Checked the video card also fine. Then i figured maybe it's the power supply. I jumped it and it worked the fan works and most of the outputs are fine. Then i tried to plug only the 24pin conector on the the mobo , it worked fine the fan kept spinning the HDD worked the cd-rom workd ..there was no stopping. But once i pluged the 4 pin atx mobo ps, every thing stoped again. I repeated the same thing 3 times. Once the 4 pin atx is pluged everything stops. What should i do. Is it the mobo ? Please help

So I set the PSU switch to off and put the Cmos jumper on reset and push the PSU switch to on and Success! the pc started and ran normally for hours. However every time I turn the PC off In order to restart it I have to reset the CMOS which annoys me because I lose all my settings and My Graphics drivers get resetted back to that Standard VGA Graphics driver from Microsoft. Any Ideas? It all started when I removed and re installed my Proccesor.

I bought this a couple of years ago from a local computer store. It's been very reliable and I run Ubuntu 16.04 Linux on it. I can get to boot as usual by pressing the power supply test button which gives me a green light on the power supply and then pressing the power button will let it boot normally. I don't have any version of Windows installed so it's not possible to run any diagnostic unless there are some Linux based ones.

Answer:Dell Optiplex 780 MiniTower, power light flashes amber diagnostic lights 1 & 3 flash

Blinking Amber power: Initial state of light at power up. Indicates system has power, but the POWER_GOOD signal is not yet active. If the Hard Drive light is off, it is probable that the power supply needs to be replaced. If the Hard Drive light on, it is probable that an onboard regulator or VRM has failed. Look at the diagnostic lights for further information.
1+3:  Memory modules are detected, but a memory configuration or compatibility error has occurred.
You could try resetting BIOS to see if you can clear the error.

Reboot and press F2 to open BIOS setup
Copy down all current BIOS settings
Power off, unplug
Press/hold power button for ~15 sec
Open case and remove motherboard battery
Press/hold power button for ~30 sec
Reseat RAM modules in their slots
Reinstall battery- good time for new CR2032 coin cell, if this one is old
Close case and reboot

If that helps, go back into BIOS setup, and confirm that all settings match what you wrote down. Be sure to save any changes before exiting setup.

I recently ordered (have not yet received) a Dell Precision T3600 workstation. I tend to build my own desktops, but I didn't want anything too flashy case wise, (cared more about ease of access, etc.) and all the good "build your own" cases are very loud (color wise, light wise, not decibel wise necessarily). At any rate, because of this "build your own spirit", I ordered it with pretty much budget everything except the PSU, which I upgraded to the 635 Watt option. I figure I can upgrade CPU, GPU, RAM, SSD, etc. later and save money. The one thing that is unclear on Dell's website, however, is what CPU options are supported. I know it is a socket LGA2011, but some of these have core count restrictions. Dell only lists it on their website with up to 8 core CPUs, but 12 core chips do exist for the LGA2011 socket. Does anybody know if these chips are compatible with the system's motherboard?
Thanks in advance!

Also another question, this of computer has a Xeon E3 1270 v2. Is it possible for me to use the v3 versions of these processors? Thanks.

Hi Everyone,
I was hoping to use an old dell internal speaker on T3600, and realized that the pin connector on motherboard (MB) is slightly different. The old speaker was taken from an Optiplex 745. On the 745 MB, the audio port is like one pin, space, three other pins, but on T3600 MB, the layout is three pins, space, one pin. The speaker has four cables, green,[space], black, white and red. I can plug in the speaker but it does not work properly.
My question is if anyone knows the pinout on T3600 MB. I can then rearrange pin receptacles of the speaker to make the speaker work.

Thank you,

DZ

Dell Precision T3600
I have been trying to install Windows 7 on this machine now for two days :) I have tried numerous drivers off the support website.
This machine has two 500gb SAS drives configured with a Dell H310 SAS card.
initially I configured both drives as a raid-1 mirror, initialized both disks and set the boot options in BIOS to ata and legacy.
I then load the Windows 7 setup and has problems finding the drives. Ok I thought get the drivers to the H310 card. No matter what driver I throw at this thing it refuses to detect any hard disk.
I get a error messaged saying continue to load *signed drivers*
I have tried every driver on the Dell site, and also other suggestions with Intel drivers nothing has worked.
I get the same problem the windows installer cannot see the drives. I even unraided the configuration and same problem occurs.
This is a headache!  please is there a simple way to install windows on this heap of junk :)

I have done a clean install of Windows 10 Pro on a Precision 3600 and everything works great except the bios will not update. I have tried by just installing the file, using Dell precision optimizer, and all gets stuck on the restart phase. Is there any suggestion on getting the PC to update the BIOS ?

Thank you.

Answer:Precision T3600, BIOS Update issue

What BIOS version is currently installed? What BIOS version are you trying to install? You should install them in order, oldest to newest.

Note, I only update the BIOS to fix a specific issue. I never update the BIOS just because there is a new one listed.
Desktop Instructions =- Disconnect all peripherals from the desktop except for monitor, mouse, and keyboard- Close all unnecessary applications- Download the BIOS to the windows desktop- Run the BIOS- You must allow the BIOS itself to restart the computer. Do NOT force a restart manually. This could break the motherboard

I have a Dell Dimension E510 that as of yesterday, won't power up anymore. The power light blinks orange and the computer does nothing when the power button is pushed or held in. It's about 16 months old and is out of warranty, so I'm trying to diagnose the problem myself.

I did some searching on the internet and found that this seems to be a common issue on these Dells, sort of a long term infant mortality issue. The most common causes seem to be a bad PSU, MOBO or a shorted USB input.

I've done some diagnostic checks/testing so far and am now stuck. Here's what I know.

- The USB ports don't appear to be shorted. I also disconnected the connector for the USB (which includes the power switch :banghead and it doesn't change any of the results that follow.
- I removed the power supply and jumped Power On (terminal 14, green wire) of the main ATX connector to ground. The fan comes on and all voltages (3.3, 5 and 12v)check out, including around 5.35v at Power Good (terminal 8, gray wire).
- With the power supply back in and everything connected, there is only 3.3mv at Power Good. As I understand it, this would normaly point to a bad power supply; however, all of the voltages check out when the unit is disconnected from everything.

Is is still possible that the power supply is bad, or is it more likely (or definitely) that the MOBO is the culprit.

Any help, including suggestions for additional testing is greatly appreciated.

This is how I got my T5600 to work from a SSD SATA connected to a PERC 310H card and boot as UEFI. It can also be a SAS drive. In this example I was only using a single drive and have not attempted a RAID setup.

I may have skipped some parts where you have to reboot. If I refer to the BIOS settings then you would have to reboot first.

1. Setup hard drive as a NON-RAID drive. When booting it will appear as BIOS handled and NON-RAID.
2. Download the Windows 10 installer onto USB using Microsoft Media Tool.
3. Download the DELL T5600 Payload for T5600 and BIOS files (if needed). Install latest DELL BIOS if you have an existing older OS.
4. Unzip the DELL driver payload onto the USB drive for Windows 10 and leave inside a folder called T5600.
5. Using a rear USB slot that is NOT USB 3. Go into F2 and load the USB stick under UEFI, it may have a strange name if the BIOS is old (such as INT13). Saqve changes. Reboot. Boot from the USB stick.

6. Make sure the drive you are working on does not contain data you want to keep. Ideally you would disconnect any drive you dont want to accidentally alter.
When given the option to select a hard drive, if necessary, delete any previous partitions so the drive is without any partitions. Then click the * NEW button.
7. After clicking NEW it MUST generate 4 partitions, 3 system partitions + 1 OS partition (made by Windows installer). If it only has 2 partitions it will never work as a UEFI boot volume

My computer was down when I came back from lunch and could not get it to come back on.  If I hold the power button down for about 7 seconds it blinks orange but there is not noise from the fan coming on or post beep.  Also the green light on the back is not on either. All of the other equipment sharing the same power strip come on but not the desktop so it is not the power strip.  I also tried to set it up in another office on a completely different circuit and still does the same thing. What should I try next?

Which form factor, desktop, mini-tower, small form, ultra-small form?
From the (desktop) manual: Blinking amber light indicates a problem with the system board.
Are any of the 4 diagnostic LEDs on when it won't boot? ,They're on the front of the PC next to the power button. Look up error codes in the manual.
Possible power supply failure if the green light is off on the back. Can you try a different power cord? What happens if you push the power supply diagnostic button on back of PC next to that (green) power light?

Question: Dell Amber Light

Hi just joined and my first post. Have been searching for possible solutions to my hardware problem on the net and hope someone here can help! Have a Dell Dimension C521 which is just over 2 yrs old. Over the last few weeks have had problems turning it on and off. There's a solid amber light on main switch. At first I could resolve by unplugging and restarting which did the trick but it seems to be getting worse. I can still get it to come on - sometimes it's after a few attempts but other times it takes 40 or 50! Once on it works fine. Took it to a local shop (who couldn't start it at all!) but they tested power supply which was ok and a few other things (not sure what) and said they thought it was probably the motherboard. Can anyone advise about this - would a motherboard fault cause this kind of intermitent problem / deterioration over time? One new thing today is when trying to turn it on sometimes the on/off button doesn't click at all. Not confident to start dismantling it and taking things out etc! Can't find any useful info on Dell site - is there any point trying to run the Dell diagnostic tool (F12 when Dell logo appears shortly after start up). Any help would be greatly appreciated. Many thanks

See here for the manual for the system and the diagnostics codes that show on the front panel: http://support.dell.com/support/edocs/systems/dimC521/en/SM_EN/tshoot.htm#wp1043338

Yes, it could be the motherboard,or the memory, or the CPU. I recently had a C521 come in with a failed processor.

I have an Optiplex 390 (actually 3 with similar behavior...).
PC would not power on. I did the power test and determine the Mobo was the issue.
I replaced the Mobo with a new one. Still can't power from front power button, but if I go at the back to the power supply 'power test button' and press on it the full PC comes on with all fans everything, but front power button is amber. And I get nothing on display, fans stay full speed. I can turn off, by pressing the from power button for a few seconds.
I tried using the CPU from another of the 3 PCs that had similar power issues and pointed to Mobo.
I reconnected all cables, tried different RAM modules, different video card, nothing makes a difference.
Not sure where to look now.

Answer:Optiplex 390 Amber power light, but all power looks good

Assuming that you replaced the motherboard then it likely is the power supply has had it you'll need to buy a new one.

Hey, Reciever80 here.

My computer a while ago got the solid amber light, and I believe i blew dust out of my case and took out/put back in the power cord and it was all good after that. Then maybe a month later, I got the flashing amber light (which was maybe 3 weeks ago).

I've used my old power supply, my current one (around 500 watts), and my second optiplex's PSU (yes i have 2--one in my study and one in my bedroom).

I've replaced the RAM, the Processor, i've disconnected all the cords, PCI cards etc. and reconnected them and it still gives me the same error.

And also, i have to unplug and plug in the power cord in order to retry the boot, and each time i do, the fan on my graphics card flutters for a single flick, and then stops. The CPU fan and PSU fan do not move.

So i figure it's the motherboard. I've looked up on the internet what busted capacitors look like, and nowhere on my motherboard is one. They all (from what i can see...) look fine, and everything seems to be running normal, however that's not the case...

Any help? I'd like to know whats wrong before i end up buying a new motherboard...

Is there anychance the motherboard warped or something? If so how can i tell?

Thanks for any help in advance....

A couple of weeks ago, my Dell E510 started shutting off randomly. After it would shut off, the front would start flashing a yellow light, but the computer could be turned back on by holding down the power button and pressing it again. About two weeks later, this solution stopped working, and the pc would always show a blinking amber light, regardless of any attempts to turn it back on .
After several days of researching the problem, I found out that it could be a power supply. I ordered the exact same PSU that was previously in my pc, and installed it. To my surprise, it worked! Sadly, after 20 minutes of use, it shut off and I am now unable to get it to turn on again.
I have cleaned the entire case, and there are no corroded or leaking pins or caps on the motherboard. I just recently replaced the CMOS battery, so I don't think that is the culprit. I have tried fiddling with the wattage switch on the back of the case, but that didn't seem to do anything for me. I also tried resetting the CMOS memory by using the 2-pin jumper plug. Nothing seems to be working.
Is this a motherboard problem, or something else?

Answer:Dell E510 Flashing Amber Light

Hi MITCHELLRILEY3
Thanks for writing to us.
That sounds more of a motherboard failure.
You can try to remove memory modules and observe if the system beeps , then put back the modules one by one and look for any promising changes.
if nothing works, please consider replacing motherboard.

When I left home this morning, all was well with the world...my Dell XPS400 was running smoothly, no indication of any problems. Came home this evening to find the PC basically lifeless, with only a blinking amber power light. No fans running, nothing. All attempts to revive failed. Disconnected power cord, cycled down, reconnected power.....nothing but that blinking amber power light.

Does anyone know what would cause this? Power supply? something else?

Thanks in advance.

Answer:Dell XPS400 - blinking amber light

You may have had a power surge during the day that possibly damaged the XPS power supply. Did you try unplugging it from the wall and waiting 10 seconds or so. then plugging it back in? Is it connected through a surge protector? If so, try plugging the computer directly into the wall plug

Hello Techies, this is my first time on Tech Support Guys. So here goes.
I have a Dell Dimensions 3000 desktop about 7 years old that does not start.
Symptoms are as follows:
- Power light on front of tower flashing amber when turned on
- Light on motherboard is solid green
- Power supply fan does not run
- Diagnostic lights do not light up at all
- Checked USB ports for bent pins and are OK.
- Removed power supply unit and visually checked components. Appears OK.
I was going to replace battery on motherboard but I have not recorded System Info. Can I still do this?
All is pointing to faulty power supply.
All help appreciated.

Answer:Dell 3000 amber light flashing

Jump a known good power supply to the board and see if that solves your problem. 95% chance that it is a defective power supply. You really can't tell much about the condition of the power supply by examining the external portion.

I'm a computer repair novice, so please be gentle with me.

I have an older Dell Dimension 8400 that won't power up. I came home a couple of days ago to find the power button blinking amber. When I push the power button nothing happens. If I press and hold it down, the blinking stops and the computer completely powers down. However, if I press the power button again, it just blinks amber and won't power up.

I have tried unplugging the computer and keeping it unplugged for several hours, both when the light is blinking and when the light is not blinking. Once I plug it back in and push the power button, the amber blinking starts again.

I read in a couple of forums that the problem could be the PSU, so I replaced the PSU with brand new one. This did nothing to solve the problem. When the light is blinking amber, there is solid green light on the motherboard.

Should I replace the motherboard or junk the computer and purchase a new one? Or is there another possible solution to my problem?

This problem happened once before a couple of weeks ago. After pressing the power button numerous times and tapping the keyboard in between, the computer did finally power up, and a message briefly appeared on the screen that read, preparing to hibernate, before it powered up. I did recently activate the hibernate options on the computer, and I realize now that I shouldn't have done so with a desktop.

Help!

Hello,
I'm facing the following issue with a Dell Precision 5510 laptop with latest bios 1.2.14 A13. It appeared suddenly, I just rebooted a working system.
The laptop does not boot anymore and the Dell logo is not shown, however, the diagnostic battery led blinks 2 times white and 2 times amber.
According to the error table that I found here http://www.dell.com/support/article/uk/en/ukdhs1/SLN295101/EN#2016_to_Present that means
System Board : BIOS, ROM Failure
and the suggested next steps are:

Flash BIOS to latest revision
If problem persists contact Tech Support for further troubleshooting
Did anyone had a similar experience?
How can I re-flash the BIOS from a non-booting machine?
I found some tricks for the Dell XPS 9350 (extracting HDR and ROM files from bios executable and plugging a USB drive) but they do not seem to apply to this laptop.
UPDATE
I found http://www.dell.com/support/article/uk/en/ukdhs1/SLN300716/en but I'm still unable to recover the computer. I keep getting the 3:3 blinking pattern, even after I put the latest BIOS (renamed to 'BIOS_IMG.rcv') into a newly formatted FAT32 USB stick (2 GB). I also tried with different USB sticks, and both USB ports.
Any help is really appreciated
Best regards,
alessioc

I have a Dell XPS 13 that had the motherboard replaced a few months ago.  When attempting to boot the front led blinks amber twice, then white twice repeatedly. The device will start up but never boots to the dell logo or the Windows OS. This is with the AC plugged in and also with the internal battery plugged in.  After a few months, I had the same issue with the laptop yesterday.  Is there another issues other than the motherboard or could it be that the "refurbished motherboard" came from another defective Dell XPS 13 9350?

I have a HP desktop model p6142p case that had a failed motherboard (bad capacitors). After replacing the power supply and a motherboard with one from a DELL Inspiron 546 (because it was only $30 on amazon), the PC functions just fine with one exception: The power light in the HP case instead of normally being blue is amber. I'm not sure if this is indicates an issue or if there's simply an incompatibility with the dell motherboard and the HP power light. There are no known errors from post (single beep on bootup). The case power light is initially blue for about a second when the PC is initially powered on, but immediately turns solid amber from then on. I have ran Dell's online PC diagnostics which detects the PC as an Inspiron 546 with UNKNOWN service tag and reports no hardware issues.

Should I ignore the solid amber light and go on or should I be concerned?

PC:
HP model p6142p case

Sounds like the dell board just doesn't
display the same way as the HP.
Might make it difficult to see that the

I don't see it causing any major issues otherwise though.

That thing was annoying when I was trying to sleep.

My Tecra A1 wont power on. Instead I just get a blinking amber power light.

Things I have tried:
1. Removing the AC adapeter
1a. The Pwr light still blinks : the comp wont turn on

2. Removing the AC adpter and the battery. Inserting the battery and hitting the power button
2a. When I remove the battery the blinking goes away, when the battery is replaced, the comp wont turn on

3. Removing power cord, and batttery : reattaching battery then power cord - hitting power button
3a. Right when I reattach the power cord, the power button starts blinking amber. Power button does nothing.

The light only blinks (or does anything for that mater) when the power cord is in.

In advance, thanks for the help.

Answer:Tecra A1 No power : Blinking Amber Light

Hi

Try to start your Tecra without battery just connected on power supply.

It is possible that here is some problem with battery. If the Power supply microcontroller detects an error the DC IN lamp sends a blinking code. Reading this code it is possible to know what the problem is.

If you think that battery is defect contact service partner.

About a month ago I found my computer tower was still 'on' but the screen was black and the green power light on the tower had turned amber. The light wasn't blinking, it was steady. I had to hold the power button down to get it to shut down and restart. It happened yesterday again, when I hadn't been near it for awhile, and that time and the time before I had FF up with stuff to look at later so I thought it was going into standby mode or something, except that it happened again about 20 minutes ago while I was using it. No odd noises before the light changes color either. Although, I have heard a couple odd noises that might be coming from the tower in the last little while. It sort of sounds like a phone set to ring on pulse, but it is pretty quite and two quick rings of two pulses about 5 minutes apart. It seems to be fine after restarting.

Preliminary ideas as to what could be causing this? I've done some basic research and have read that it could be the power supply. I will also say that each time it has happened the computer has been on for over 10 hours before hand.

It is a dell (can't mind model # right now) and is running Windows XP home.

I tried to play arma 3, total war etc. yesterday but i have a black screen issue. After about 15-20 min (arma 3 doesn't even launch) black screen comes.( i can still hear the game).
I opened the case and saw an amber light which is under "aux-pwr". It doesn't blink, solid. What does it mean? Do i have to change the psu?

Thanks.

Hello. After I accidentally unplugged my pc, I tried to turn it back on but only got a solid amber light on the power button, nothing comes on the screen and there are no beeps, the PSU light on the back is green so I don't know if it's a PSU problem. The fans run and I can open the CD tray. I already tried unplugging the cord and holding the power button without results. Thanks

Last week a lightning storm parked itself over my house. About two steps away from reaching the surge protector to turn it off, there was a loud pop and all the clocks/appliances in the house started the "I've lost power" blink. After the storm left, I tried to boot up the computer, which just held a steady amber light from the on button and the fan came on. The Dell information I found all indicated that this was probably a bad power supply. I have now replaced the power supply on the e 521 and it still has the steady amber light and will not boot.
Any suggestions, or should I assume that all hope is lost?

I have a Dell Dimension 4700C that I recently inherited from my mother when she bought a new computer. Initially, she gave up on it (without consulting me) because her monitor was blank when she turned it on. I installed a new video card and voila, a working computer.

...for about 3 days. I go to boot it up today and I get the amber blinking light of death, or so it is called. I read a previous thread on here suggesting it was the power cord, so I tried a different cord of the same type. Same problem. I went to Dell's tech support online and followed the instructions there: turn off computer, remove and reseat components, turn on computer. Tried this twice to no avail.

The computer was purchased in 2005, so I doubt it would be worth my time taking it to a shop to have it fixed. Any ideas on what it could be (other than the power supply) that I could possibly fix/replace myself? Anything is appreciated. I was trying to get this up and running to turn into a gaming PC.

Thanks for your time!

After connecting the keyboard , the computer never turns on. It gives steady amber light
I removed the whole computer, no sticky things found in the motherboard ,, i dried the motherboard using air dryer No sticky things found, the motherboard looked like nothing wrong on it...
Cleaned everything but computer would not start.. I am afraid that my Motherboard might become faulty now, how can i check the motherboard ......
I really need your help
Regards

Answer:my Dell Laptop gives steady Amber light, never starts again

Those flexible ribbon cables are notoriously difficult to snap positively into their sockets. If the keyboard cable is not making good contact that may cause your problem.

Other than that, if any part of the motherboard was still wet, or had any residual film on it, when you started it up after the spill that could cause a short circuit that could have damage some component on the motherboard. Were you absolutely sure everything was clean and dry before applying power?

The Dell in question will not boot up. The power light has a blinking amber light. I googled for information for troubleshooting lights on the power supply and it could be a power supply failure, bad motherboard, or bad hard drive. I turned it off, unplugged everything, then rebooted. Nothing. There are two lights by the ethernet port that are normally green and now one is red and the other is amber. I personally suspect it is the power supply because the fan does not come on.

The machine is a Dell Dimension 4700C, Intel Pentium 4, running Windows XP. Can anyone be more specific? The machine is no longer under warranty so we'd have to decide if getting the computer repaired is better than the purchase of a new one. Thank you!

The fan has always been loud, but now the drive will not boot up at all. When connected to the monitor, it's either black or has no signal. I have the cpu open and know a little, but there are some cables not connected, P8, P4 and one other. I am no expert with stuff like this but would love to keep this little computer going for my kids. Thanks for your help!

Hi,

Trying to set up the Netgear WNDR3400 router with my Roadrunner modem. I have an ethernet cable running from the router to my laptop.

The laptop shows that there is not any kind of network access--not LAN, not Internet. Needless to say, I am unable to get to the wireless setup.

I notice that the power light on the router is a solid amber (orange). The 2.4GHz radio light is solild green, the 5GHz radio light is solid blue, the LAN light if off, the wireless light is solid amber, and the four ethernet port lights are all solid green (I am using one port to connect to my laptop).

I tried resetting the router several times. I tried power cycling the modem, router, and laptop several times. Nothing worked. It just seems to me that the Netgear router is dead on arrival.

Is my suspicion correct? Or are the other possibilities?

Thanks!

Answer:wndr3400 router solid amber power light

Hi

The Green for 2.4ghz and Blue for 5ghz are perfect and normal, the orange light is a bit worrying as it should turn to green in less than 1 minute, and if you have powered it off a few times and also reset to factory default a few times I would suspect the unit is indeed faulty, so exchange for a new one. (the Netgear manual on pg 32 also confirms this HERE)

Just as a thought, have you plugged in a Ethernet cable from PC to router and tried to access the routers control panel, then maybe try a router firmware update? but as its likely new why should you go through these motions.

Hi My F1904 monitor seems to have a fault. When I power it on the power switch flashes amber and I get no display. Any suggestions? There does not seem to be any mention of this in the documentation. Many Thanks

Answer:F1904 Monitor flashing amber power light

amber usually means sleep mode. flashing can mean different things. Disconnect the video cable, turn it off, pull the power plug, wait 10 seconds, plug it in and turn it on. Press the OSD buttons to see if you can bring up the on screen display. If that comes, up try connecting it again. Hopefully the PC is not sending out a bad video signal.

Does anyone have a list of flash codes for the Tecra M2.
A coworker has a laptop that will not boot up. the AC power light flashes amber. a long, short, long, short, long, short, long, short.

I have checked the battery and reseated the RAM.
Any Ides?

Answer:Tecra M2 does not boot - AC power light flashes amber

I think only ASP's have this kind of information.

If you have tried different memory, and tried the memory in different slots, its probably a Mainboard problem.

trying to turn on toshiba tecra a8 laptop. the light on the power button flashes twice amber and once green and it won;t start up.

any suggestions?

Answer:Tecra A8: Power light flashing amber twice and won't boot

Remove the battery and (try) to start the notebook only with AC-Adaptor connected.
If your A8 behaves the same you have to bring it to service.

I cannot turn on my Dell XPS One Desktop. The on off switch doesn't work. There is a solid red, or amber light on the back panel just below the plug, when it is plugged in? Can you explain what the solid red or amber light indicates please? Thank you.

Answer:Dell Desktop XPS One solid amber light on back panel

First suspect would be the power supply - about $50 to replace.  If that doesn't solve the issue, it's the mainboard - which is more like $400+ to replace.

Hi everyone,

I need your help/suggestion for next steps. I have a Dell Dimension E310 that have been working well for a long time, but started flashing amber light on power on w/ blank screen. Behavior is like this:1) Flashing amber power light on power up. No beeping sound.
2) All 4 diagnostic lights lit up, steady green
3) CPU fan runs
4) Blank dark screen, windows does not start
5) But here was the weird part... If we leave it on for 20-30 minutes (in flashing amber state), then plug the external backup storage drive to the front USB, then Windows starts.
6) This technique had been true for 2-3 weeks, but now I could not get the PC to start at all.

I checked the USB slot and can not see any apparent damage. I have also replaced the 3V system battery. Thanks.

Hi, this is my first post and I have never used any other forum so i hope I'm diong things the right way.

I have a Dell Optiplex Gx280 and it won't start, an amber light is flashing in the power button. I have read the manual and it states the following:

If the power light is blinking amber ?

The computer is receiving electrical power, but an internal power problem might exist.

Ensure that the voltage selection switch is set to match the AC power at your location (if applicable).
Ensure that the processor power cable is securely connected to the system board.

I did both things but it still does'nt power up.

I opened the comptuer and the stand by power light is on, (the one in the system board). I don't know if this is ok.

What else can i do?

Thanks for your help.

Hector

Answer:Dell Optiplex GX280 won't start, amber light flashing

How long have you had this machine? Is it brand new? If so take it back. If it's not new, what is the last thing you did to your machine? Any modifications? You are not getting any signal. An amber light means it's running but it's not going to show up on the screen.

Hi,

I have a Dell Optiplex 780 and when I went to power it up the other night it did not power up.  I'm getting a solid amber light for the power button and lights 2,3, and 4 are blinking above it.  Any idea what this means?

Answer:Dell OptiPlex - Solid amber light, lights 2,3,4 blinking

According to the 780 Service Manual page 13,
Solid Amber Power Light = Second state of the light at power up. Indicates the POWER_GOOD signal is active and it is probable that the power supply is fine. Look at the diagnostic lights for further information.
Page 15 shows that 2/3/4 = A possible USB failure has occurred. Disconnect and reconnect every USB device, then try to power on.

Hi everyone - my Dell Studio XPS 9100 tower computer turns on and works fine except there's a flashing amber light. Today I moved it from one part of my office to another and now there's a flashing light on the power button. I've read it might've been a power supply or motherboard failure but my computer starts up and works with, seemingly, no problems. Any help is greatly appreciated.A.

This is normally the power supply. So you're saying that it works sometimes and other times the system fails to start?

Hi,

Here is my computer specs:
DELL Optiplex GX520
Desktop
Windows XP Professional

This is my first time here... here is the issue... my friend gave me his computer for me to fix it. I replaced the hdd, I also reinstall the OS (Windows XP recovery disk used). Everything was fine and I let it stand there for a couple of days... maybe a week. After that I decided to get everything ready by connecting the remaining devices and closing the chassis. The computer started to show the blinking amber light. I opened the chassis again, disconnected everything and connect them one by one without luck. I also reset the battery, and changed the jumpers to the opposite ones (I inserted the pin in one side and it showed a steady amber light, in the other jumper a blinking amber light. I also switched the power surge from on to off a couple of times. The usb ports seem okay (I also removed all of my usb devices including the mouse and keyboard). The power supply was tested and it works, I also bought another ssf power supply (from Ebay... it was the same power supply by the same manufacturer, same watts and just identical). It stay with the flashing light. I don't think is the motherboard since the mobo's light is and when I replaced it with a normal power supply it works perfectly. So I don't know what's wrong... I don't think the hardware is wrong since it work with one of my power supply's from my other computer. The problem is that there is not wa... Read more

Answer:Dell XPS 13 (9350) battery light 4 Amber 1 White | Cannot Charge

Hi andyex777,
Thank you for writing to the Dell Community Forum.
Please run the diagnostics on the system (To initiate, power on the system while holding down the Fn key), let us know how it goes. Check the battery status in the BIOS, also check if the ac adapter is detected. Can you please check the blinking pattern again and update us. Test this ac adapter on another system and a good known one on this system, try these steps and keep us posted.
Kindly get back if there are any further queries.

I just recently took a fan out of a working GX280 and put it into a GX280 that needed it. When I went back to put the fan in it the working machine, plugged everything in. The power button was glowing in an amber color. There is also an amber light on the motherboard. I had grounded myself ahead of time so I don't think I fried anything. Could it be a wire?Any help ahead of time is greatly appreciated. Also if the motherboards are the same can I swap hard drives?

Answer:Dell GX280 amber light and hard drive swap

Unless you created a surge of static electricity, then you should not have hurt anything. But you Likely have connected the wires backwards... Does the fan have a four wire or three wire plug and socket?

Hello, (she says through gritted teeth)

My son spilt a glass of coke around my pc tonight, as I was cleaning the keyboard I assume I hit the power off button as it shut itself down. I decided this probably wasnt such a terrible thing so I could continue to clean the keyboard and the rest of the mess. I then powered it up and the fan ran furiously (louder than normal) with a solid amber light from the power button and monitor power button. I turned it all of at the power point then turned it all back on, same again. So I decided to remove it open it up and check for moisture inside. There was no moisture in and around the mother board or anywhere else that I could see other than some coming out of the plastic case area which I cleaned (also vacuumed it out to remove dust), but the metal case / base and all insides looked fine. After a while I plugged it back in but same again, fan going flat out and just amber lights. Oh yes and I tried the mouse from it on another computer and it won't work either!

Which part is cactus?

Can I retrieve any of the information / files from the hard drive? I have an Acer and a HP Compact, am I able to put the hard drive into either of these to get my files?

I had files I hadn't backed up on there ( I know it's a sin)

Any assistance would be greatly appreciated.

Hi guys,

I've got a Dell Studio Slim desktop 540s. I was disconnecting the monitor from the video card and the next time I went to use
it, I couldn't get it to boot or show anything on the monitor. Get a constant amber light on the power button, louder fans than normal and no input to monitor. Tried reseating video card, RAM, cleaned dust, CPU fan and still won't boot. Does this sound like something happened when I was tampering with the VGA plug in the video card? that was the last thing I did before this problem. Operating windows 7. Thanks in advance for any suggestions,

Answer:Dell Studio Slim won't boot, constant amber light

Solid amber LED is a hardware failure indicator. motherboard I believe.
