Windows 10 Upgrade - why isnt Dell Vostro 3550 on the list from Dell ?

Question: Windows 10 Upgrade - why isnt Dell Vostro 3550 on the list from Dell ?

I found this list on the Dell site that tells you whether they have tested a particular model for its ability to be upgraded to Windows 10. The Dell Vostro 3550 is not on the list of about 20 Vostro models, some with lower model numbers , some higher. Will they ever test it??
If you try to upgrade, windows 10 copies files and then in the 2nd of the three major sections of the upgrade (where you have that big circle in the middle of the screen) it just goes to a blank screen and then all disk activity ceases and it becomes well hung. Of course now, the machine thinks its os is win 10 and you cannot go back to a win 7 recover point . So you just lose all your data and apps and restore the factory image and then install 208 windows 7 updates and it takes like 8 hours in all.
Sounds like a similar problem that people had with Vostros going from win 7 to win 8. Why not fix it.

Preferred Solution: Windows 10 Upgrade - why isnt Dell Vostro 3550 on the list from Dell ?

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Answer: Windows 10 Upgrade - why isnt Dell Vostro 3550 on the list from Dell ?

Well, after spending the better part of whole day trying to figure out why somebody else's Dell Vostro 3550 was not displaying anything after an even longer period of downloading the Windows 10 upgrade (from Windows 7 in this case) it turns out the fix required was to upgrade the BIOS to A11 (end of 2012).

Hopefully this might save someone a wasted day in their lives. Before this I spent some hours before figuring out that the machine was in fact booting - only the display was black. So then it was a matter of figuring out key strokes to use (blind) to shut down and also enable the menu for safe mode. Safe mode worked, and so then more hours trying to work around the issue before finally stumbling onto some stuff online where the BIOS upgrade was mentioned - apparently also an issue with Windows 8?

I have two older Dell Vostro laptops:
Vostro 1720 Windows 7 Home Premium x64
Vostro 3550 Windows 7 Home Premium x64
For each one, when I go to the Dell product support site and enter the service tag, I get the following warning.

Product not tested for Windows 10 upgrade
Dell has not confirmed that this product can upgrade to Windows 10. Some drivers, firmware, applications, and connected devices may not work as you would expect.

I suspect that is a generic warning, but I'm wondering if trying to upgrade either one of them to Windows 10 at this time could be successful with regard to drivers.

Answer:Upgrade advice for two Dell Vostro Laptops, 1720 and 3550

Yes, that looks like a generic warning.

You'd likely have to pound the Internet to see if you can find instances of someone with those same models that successfully upgraded. The Dell forums would be my first place to look for that.

You might have to wait weeks or months so more people experiment on more machines. It's been less than a week so far.

"could be successful"? Sure. How big a deal would it be to you if it weren't successful? Mild annoyance? Near catastrophe?

Barring some over-riding need to jump on Win 10 right now, I'd wait.

I'm not sure if Microsoft has put up any sort of compatibility-checking web site to answer questions like this.

Hello,

I have just installed Windows 8 Professional edition alongside Windows 7 Professional, however I cannot use my built in monitor when within the normal mode of Windows 8, Instead I have to use an external monitor (I'm currently using my TV via HDMI), however, in safe mode I can use my built in laptop monitor, or if I disable the intel HD 3000 graphics driver, however I do not want to do this because I would prefer to still be able to use my dual-monitor setup, I have all of the latest drivers for the video devices and still no avail, could someone please help!

Thanks in advance,

There is an issue with a bunch of dell laptops (Vostro 3550, Inspiron n5110 included) where the laptop display is not detected. All of the new drivers and drivers on this site do not fix the problem. There are a couple of workarounds that you do in the meantime though.

1) Hook up an external monitor. Then you can at least use the laptop (only with the external monitor though).
2) Disable the Display adapter under computer properties. Screen shuts off after boot animation - Microsoft Answers (this will only allow a low resolution and no graphic acceleration.)

I hope they fix this soon as it is tough to develop for an OS that I can't even use.

Hello All,
Due to the recent problematic Windows 10 Update, I had to reset my PC. Post reset, there is a new applet in my Control Panel which was never there prior to the reset. It is the Dell Touchpad, but the icon is blank and the application is apparently missing.

However, I have looked up Device Manager, the driver is installed and the touchpad is working.

So, I am kind of hoping that you Guys can provide me with a solution to get the touchpad application back in Control Panel so the icon will show OR provide me with the CLSID for the Dell Touchpad so I could hide it from the Control Panel.

Hope to hear from you Guys soon.

Regards,
Andrew

I have a Vostro 3550 (Win 7 Professional 64 bit) that I purchased in 2011. It has been a very reliable laptop until a few days ago. Now the laptop does not turn and it does not show any power on the indicator light on the front. The power adapter shows that it has power. Just in case there was something wrong with the battery that was preventing the laptop from starting, I removed the battery and re-attached the power cord. Still no power and the laptop didn't start. I reinstalled the battery and tried to restart it. No luck again. I tried to power it up with 3 other power adapters I have (2 OEM & 1 aftermarket) and still no luck getting it to start/boot. So I am pretty sure my adapters are okay and feel it must be something with the laptop itself. Dell said that I could send it to them to diagnose but they would charge me $200 for the diagnosis.
Even though it had been a very good machine, I am not sure that I want to spend a lot of money on it because it is so old. Does anyone have any easy suggestions of things I can try to see if I can get it to start and boot? I would appreciate any and all suggestions so that I don't have to go out and buy a new machine with Windows 10.

Answer:Dell Vostro 3550 Will Not Turn On

Sounds like a motherboard failure and you're wise not to spend anything on it especially a $200 fee just to look at it. Don't hesitate to buy a new laptop with windows 10. It is a big improvement over Windows 8. Win 10 can even use windows 7 backups.

After Microsoft scanned and said my computer was ready, I downloaded W10 to my Dell Vostro 3550. ALL I RECEIVED WAS A BLANKED SCREEN. After visiting the Dell site I was informed I needed a new driver at a cost of $129.00. If I knew this from Microsoft in the beginning I would not have done the download at this time. do have any other options?

Answer:Driver for Dell Vostro 3550

Drivers don't cost money, I think you visited the wrong site or were offered a fee based support call with Dell.

From a quick search online it seems you need to update the BIOS to version A11 to resolve you issue: http://www.dell.com/support/home/us/en/04/Drivers/DriversDetails?driverId=N2KW4

You must hook up an external monitor to get a screen output from the laptop to perform the update, once done it should work.

Hello,
I have a Dell Vostro 3550 with Windows 10. To power up the laptop I need to press two times the power button. The first time I press it, it tries to boot but after a few seconds it powers dows. Then, I'll have to press the power button again, and this time it will boot up normally.
I'm wondering if this is a known issue and do you have any ideas?
Thanks,

Hello,

I have a very bizarre issue with a Dell Vostro 3350 laptop. The LCD screen display is mirrored backwards left to right, even at initial bootup of the computer (motherboard post and bios screens). When plugged into an external monitor, the bios screen displays correctly, although this does NOT work at all when opened into windows 7....it will not switch monitors with the monitor key.

I tried a motherboard BIOS update (since it was an old version anyway), but no luck.

Has anyone ever seen this before?? Is this a potential LCD failure or a motherboard issue?? Thanks in advance.

Ken

Its a LCD problem, if you feel comfortable enough, disassemble the lcd from from the laptop bottom chassis.
Check for the inverter that plugs into the motherboard and take it out for 30 seconds and plug it back in.
On a safe stable tabel, carefully plug up your laptop and hit the power button.
If it does this reverse display error all the way from bootup, see about getting your lcd replaced.

If dell has your system under warrenty have them fix it.

Hi guys,

My niece asked me to help her with her Dell laptop...it was running very slow so i said i would install Windows 8 on it for her.

so I installed it and everything seemed to go like clockwork...

once it started again i get the dell boot screen then the Windows 8 logo comes up then disappears and then NOTHING!!

the screen is working as it lights up but nothing comes on it.

could this be a "dodgy" hard drive?

Hi all,
I recently purchased the Dell Vostro 3550 (2 days back) and i just figured out that only one of the 3 usb ports are working.

1 USB PORT AT BACK (USB 3) not working
1 USB PORT RIGHT (USB 3) not working
1 USB LEFT (USB 2) works
1 USB LEFT (USB 2.0/ SATA) WORKS

Why not the other. I even updated BIOS. HELP PLEASE

Answer:Dell Vostro 3550 USB PORT NOT WORKING

Hi,
I would recommend you to try the following steps to check the USB ports. Firstly I would advise you to uninstall and reinstall the USB root hubs from the device manager. Please follow the steps below to reinstall the USB root hubs:

Click Start, type device manager in start search and press Enter.
 Expand Universal Serial Bus controllers.
Right-click every device under the Universal Serial Bus controllers node, and then click Uninstall to remove them one at a time.
 Restart the computer and check.

If the USB ports are still not working, please click on the link mentioned below and download the USB 3.0 host controller.

Hope this helps. please reply for any further questions.

Hello everyone. I posted this topic earlier today, then edited it. Not sure if it's in the hands of the moderators again for checking, or if it vanished.  So reposting just in case.

I replaced three things in the last year for my Dell Vostro 3550 laptop. Last July I bought a new slim style Dell AC Adapter and a  new battery, both supposedly genuine. And in March this year I bought a replacement DC Jack power socket connector and installed it to the motherboard. All my parts were not bought from Dell, only other online sites like ebay. So I'll only buy from Dell direct now to assure genuinemparts.
The battery has been charging fine until now when I have to keep the adapter plugged in all the time. It says '8% available (plugged in not charging)' on the taskbar.
* I get the warning message saying that it can't determine the AC Adapter, that it may not charge the battery, and that I should connect a 90w or higher adapter even though my adapter says it's 90w.
* In my BIOS (I have the A12 bios update), next to 'ac adapter type' it says 'none'.
* There's no charging even with the laptop shutdown. I can remove the battery though and with the charger plugged in, the laptop is fine.
* The icon on the front panel illuminates red when I unplug the adapter, but there's no illumination at all when the adapter is reconnected.
* The centre pin inside the plug that is menat to be responsible for charging is still intact and seems cen... Read more

I am installing Windows 7 Home Premium x64 on a new hard disk drive on a Dell Vostro 3550 laptop. I found this thread which is similar to my problem, but I am still confused about the driver installation.

When I use the service tag to bring up the drivers available for download, there are no chipset drivers included. When I look at all the drivers available for the Vostro 3550, as mentioned in the referenced thread, I find four drivers but it is not clear which one/ones I should install.

I know this isn't actually a graphics card issue, but most people who have an n5110 and could only either disable the display adapter or hook up an external monitor thought it was a graphics card problem, so I have posted it here (this is the category I've been lurking in).

Drivers and Downloads | Dell [Canada]

There is a BIOS update for the n5110 that should fix the problem! It has been many months of frustration and waiting and now it seems like we will finally be able to use out laptops at full resolution.

I haven't had a chance to try it out yet, but according to others it has.

There is also supposedly a BIOS update for the Vostro 3550 that fixes the same issue.

Hello all. Last night, I had the scare of my life. In bed using laptop and all of a sudden a crackling sound and thick smoke thick wafting in front of me, pouring out of my laptop. Heart pounding I jumped out of bed, pulled the PSU jack plug out, and like a hot potato in my hands, got it off my bed and ran into the kitchen with it and put it down in the sink. No water poured over it, I let it smoulder and the smoke stopped after a few minutes.
My duvet cover right over my legs got burnt and fortunately didn't have time to burn further through do no damage to me.
These are the pictures after I managed to prise the melted battery from its compartment. Thank god this happened while I was here and not out when it was in sleep mode sitting on the bed.
I removed the harddrive, optical drive and one stick of ram and bootedbooted with just the psu to test if the laptop still works. It boots fine. So I'll put back the harddrive and do an Acronis True Image backup.

Answer:Battery caught fire - Dell Vostro 3550

Any lithium ion/polymer battery can explode in flames -as we've seen with the genuine Samsung batteries in the Note 7 issue.
It's more likely to happen with third-party batteries, which often lack the protection circuit genuine cells have.
If the system was being used on a soft bed surface, the cooling vents were likely blocked - that alone could have raised the temperature high enough to cause the incident.
You'll need to contact your seller to find out whether the battery is original Dell - though even if it appears to be, it may be that someone replaced the cells inside -- i.e., "refurbished" the battery.
It's likely not worth repairing this system - you can easily buy a used but much  newer, more capable system than this one, which is now on the order of five years old -- for less than what the repair parts will cost.

Hello there,
I am experiencing a problem with a Dell Vostro 3550 laptop, running Windows 7. I have started to experience a pause/stall/freeze approximately every 30 seconds, which lasts a 3 - 4 seconds with using the laptop. It is most commonly experienced when typing in Word 2010 or entering search terms into a internet browser, but it does happen when not typing also - scrolling an already-loaded webpage, switching between programs, browsing within Start -> All Programs menu, etc. It is a complete stall, loading indicators stop, windows don't update, any keyboard strokes are buffered and the text appears after the stall. I'm am familiar with computers and this isn't regular 'waiting for something to load', it feels very random, like loading is blocked/stalled, and is very frustrating! There is little rhyme or rhythm to it.
It tends to happen in some circumstance more than others, but follows no fixed rule. In Word, for example, a stall is more likely if I've reached the end of a line and the text is about to wrap to the next line. Or if I've recently alt-tabbed back into Word. It is not-Word specific. It happens in Firefox and Internet explorer also. Typing into Notepad is all fine; no problems at all. The same is true of Wordpad. Strangely, if I open Word in safe mode (winword.exe /safe) the problem is much worse, happening every....5 seconds if I start word in safe mode.
I've done everything I know to diagnose the problem and fix it, but have been unsuccessful:

I have a Dell Vostro 3550 64 bit that had been wiped clean. BIOS version A06 I seem to be having problems installing the correct drivers and or in the correct order. I am using Win7 Pro. I went to Dell's support sight and search for drivers by the service tag. Ive done this many times before with different computers but for some reason this one is messing with me.

I always start with the chipset drivers, in this case the Intel HN67 Express Chipset family Driver Version 9.2.0.1019,A00 R292253.exe but that didnt work.

I wanted Internet connectivity because I could get more drivers automatically through Dell or WUD. First I tried Dell Wireless 1701 802.11 bgn, Bluetooth v3.0+HS Driver R312280 but had no luck. Then I tried Intel Centrino Wireless-N 10001030, Advanced-N 6230 Driver R312222 but was still unsuccessful. I could not find any additional wifi drivers that sounded right. I could not get any USB drives to be seen by the computer so I was burning these executables to CD and transferring them that way. Instead of dropping the laptop out the 6th story window followed by myself, I was hoping someone familiar with the 3550 could list the basic drivers in the correct order, enough for to get me started. Chipset, USB and WIFI would be enough so that I might muddle through the rest myself. I cant even tell what video adapter was shipped with it from the System Configuration sheet. Look in the device manager -- if you see two video display adapters listed, you do have the AMD GPU.  If you see only one (Intel), you have only an Intel GPU.
This system was sold with Intel-only (base model) and Intel/AMD hybrid (higher end models) GPU systems.

Answer:Black screen problem - new motherboard - Dell Vostro 3550

It's probably an Activation Problem. If it's a new Motherboard, it's new Hardware, even if it is the exact motherboard you replaced.

If you can pull up Task Manager from the black screen (If you have a mouse but nothing else) - Then you can stick your install disk into the Optical Drive and run Setup.exe- This will fix any activation problems. Run an In-Place Install which means just choose "Upgrade" from the choice of either upgrade or fresh install. I've had to do this twice.

johnboy18, welcome to the Seven Forums.

Unless there is an option in the bios to increase the amount of system ram allocated to graphics, there is nothing to do.

Also can not suggest/recommend a new video card as what you have despite it being sold as a desktop, is nothing more than a laptop built into the monitor with all the same limitations as far as upgrading parts goes.

I've heard the AMD Radeon RX 580 is a good card, however, I'm looking to make this as inexpensive as possible.

Thanks in advance.

it's been almost 2 yrs since I've been using vostro 420 and now to get better fps in games im thinking to upgrade it to i5. I just want to know if it supports i5 processor. if yes then which model ?
Specs: 4gb ram

Answer:Can I upgrade Dell Vostro 420 Core 2 duo to i5

No.  The Core i CPU is completely different in design from the old Core 2 -- there's no way you can install a Core i on a Core 2 board.

Hi guys.
I was trying to collect as much information as possible before posting here to get the correct answer from forum experts. So here we go.
I'm planing to upgrade memory in my Dell. Here are some screen shots (all images are clickable and will open in a separate window to see full size)
The original memory installed in my system (3):

Technology DDR3 SDRAM
Form Factor DIMM 240-pin
Memory Speed 1333 MHz ( PC3-10600 )
Data Integrity Check Non-ECC
RAM Features Unbuffered
Module Configuration 512 x 64
Compatible Slots 1 x memory - DIMM 240-pin

CPU-Z screens:

I've always trusted Kingston's memory and couple years ago they had my system on their list. Now they don't. I wrote down the number back then (KVR1333D3N9K2/8G) and was trying to find it like that. Turned out that it was discontinued and replaced by KVR13N9S8K2/8. I also called the support number to make sure it will work. The rep I was talking to said that it won't and that they don't support the system like I have any more. OK. Forget about Kingston then.
Went on Dell's website. Put my service tag -> check memory upgrade for this particular system. Here is the screen:

What? Doesn't Dell know what they sold me? Fine. The hell with Dell
Went on Crucial. Downloaded and ran CrucialScan. Here is the screen:

The first thing they recommend is again not what I have. It's PC3-12800 instead of 10600 and as far as I understand CL... Read more

Answer:Memory upgrade for Dell Vostro 430

They don't have to be in the compatibility list to work. As long as it is DDR3 240 pin and 1333mhz, youre okay.

Hello there,
I'm about to Upgrade my DELL VOSTRO 5470's 4GB RAM to 8GB RAM. Therefor, I would love to ask a question about RAM. Is it that important to buy necessarily the RAM from dell website which was DELL sticker? For instance, I found another cheaper and seemingly very good and reasonable RAM's from Crucial and This another one entitled "DMS Certified RAM"..
So would those RAM's work fine? are they suitable and fully compatible? or I definitely have the one sole choice to by 95 Euro priced RAM on DELL Website?  I think that's pretty expensive..

Thanks a lot!
Giorgi

Answer:DELL VOSTRO 5470 RAM UPGRADE

You don't need to purchase RAM from Dell, but you should ask your vendor about compatibility guarantees (or understand the possible return/restocking fees if they don't offer a guarantee).

Hi
I recently bought a second hand Vostro 260 with i5-2400 and 4GB RAM on Ebay
I bought it as a base for upgrades.
Yes , I know it's not the best choice for that but:
- I don't need a new PC
- I badly needed to replace my ancient Athlon 64 x2 5200+ with something better
- I needed a cheap machine and it was CHEAP (I mean , I paid , said goodbye and started running - CHEAP)
I've already replaced/added some components but I need to add some RAM
I don't need much , 8GB would be fine.
I'm trying to buy 2x4GB DDR3 RAM and I have a problem. Apparently I need non ECC low density memory. And "low density" is the key.
How can I tell if memory is low or high density?
I've found some sticks but I have no idea if they're gonna be working?
Hynix HMT351U6CFR8C-H9 N0 AA - this one is supposed to be low density , not sure about the rest
Hynix HMT351U6EFR8C-PB N0 AA
Hynix HMT351U6BFR8C-H9 N0 AA
Hynix HMT351S6CFR8C-PB N0 AA
Corsair Vengeance CMZ8GX3M2A1600C9
Kingston KVR1333D3N9K2/8G
Kingston HP698650-154-KEF
Samsung M378B5273DH0-CH9
Integral IN3T4GNYBGX
Nanya NT4GC64B8HB0NF-CG

I would apreciate any help.

Answer:Dell Vostro 260 memory upgrade.

Just buy it from Crucial.com.
Here's RAM for the Vostro 260:
www.crucial.com/.../CT8961422
Just make sure you know if it's a Vostro 260 or 260S because the 2x4 GB RAM kits for these 2 systems appear to have different part numbers at crucial.com.
If Crucial recommends RAM for your specific PC model, they guarantee it works or they take it back. Lots of peeps on this forum buy RAM from Crucial.

Hi,

The quad core i7s have no GPU onboard, so they absolutely will not work.
The dual-core i7s may or may not -- Dell never shipped them, so you'd have to try one to see what happens.

Hi, I have a Dell Vostro 400 with Win XP Home on it and I should upgrade out of it but I want to keep all my programs and settings. I have the Dell Reinstallation DVD for Vista Ultimate 32 bit. I'm under the impression that that is an upgrade path. Once I get there, can I upgrade to Win 7 Pro 32 bit and still keep my programs?

I'm trying to follow instructions at Windows Reinstallation Guide and Related Software Guides

Answer:Dell Vostro 400 - Upgrade XP to Vista then Win 7

According to Microsoft, you can upgrade from XP to Vista and keep your files and programs.

Upgrading from Windows XP to Windows Vista

Ditto for upgrade from Vista to Windows 7.

Upgrading from Windows Vista to Windows 7 - Help & How-to - Microsoft Windows

Personally, I would do a clean install of Windows 7, bypassing Vista completely. Your computer will run better and there will be no leftover junk from XP to cause problems later on. Just backup your data first.

The guide you are following is overkill to the max, way to much information and steps.

No matter what you do, please backup your data first. Even better would be to make an image backup to an external hard drive so if anything goes wrong you have a easy way to recover.

Is the copy of Windows 7 a upgrade or full version?

For Upgrade: Clean Install with a Upgrade Windows 7 Version

For a Full version: Clean Install Windows 7

I've been looking at this pc for quite a while now and I just looked at the Dell website showing that the Vostro 220 mini tower takes the quad core processor now. Does that mean I can upgrade from a core 2 duo to a quad OR is this a different motherboard?
And why is this an option now? Before this wasn't an option at all which makes me think it's either a different motherboard or bios update.

Answer:Dell Vostro 220 Core 2 Quad upgrade?

There are two motherboards (40N31, Y312K), I do not know which motherboard you have. You need to open the case and look for the part number on the motherboard.
Why now? Marketing saw that customers were willing to buy the quad core processor from us, so they made it happen.

I used Crucial PC26400-800 2gb & Elpida PC2-6400-666 2gb modules, Vostro 1510, A15 bios
I did the following:
1. Extracted old 1GB RAM from both banks.
2. Inserted new memory to both banks.
3. Turn on computer.
4.  After i rebooted the display was black and Lock leds were blinking. Num Lock fast blinking, Scroll and Caps Lock where solid green.
5. Computer didn't boot up.
6. Tried each new module by itself, tried 1 old module and 1 new module, same result, tried every combination of modules & banks
7. Confirmed with Crucial that the memory module was indeed compatible.  CT2566AC800.M16FM
8. Tried unsuccessfully to contact Dell Tech support to verify the exact parameters for the memory as the Dell Claimed Support of 4GB for this model is in question! [ got the big run around from support ]
9. All Memory works fine in a Dell Inspiron 6400 Laptop

Answer:Dell Vostro 1510 memory upgrade issues

Blinking num/solid caps+scroll lock is a processor initialization error.
Did you do this with the battery removed and the system unplugged?
Try:
Unplug, remove battery and hold the power button for 30 sec.  Remove and reinstall the CPU.
Then try the RAM again.
If you still can't get the system to power up correctly, chances are the system board is fried.

Hi, I had a GPU fail in my Dell Vostro 1500 laptop. The card that failed was an NVIDIA GeForce 8400 GS. The Vostro laptop actually can accept an NVIDIA 8600 GT card too. So I ordered the replacement part from Dell for the 8600 and they shipped me a refurbished unit.
The surgery to put in the new card took all night for hack like to do. I did not look carefully at the refurbished unit they shipped me as I was nervous handling the card (that I might break it).
But when I turned on the laptop after the installation, I did not get a pause at the BIOS saying “I see new hardware” like I did when I upgraded the RAM.
After the computer booted up I uninstalled the 8400 driver and then installed the 8600 driver. There was a snag at it’s possible that Windows automatically reinstalled the 8400 driver during one the required reboots but I KNOW that I wrote the 8600 driver over top at least (I had hoped to do a clean uninstall then reinstall but Windows tried to grab a driver for me).
So now when I right click on computers, properties device manager it shows the video as still the 8400 card. The 8400 card I removed has a sticker on it that says KU907 on it. The invoice for the 8600 that Dell sent for the 8600 says KU907 on it too.
I think I was sent the wrong part from Dell (I paid a higher price for the 8600 GPU) . Is it possible that a legacy driver is making the Vostro think it has the 8400 when the part IS an 8600. Or when I go to the Device Manager, does the computer physically c... Read more

Hi

I can set only maximum 1920×1050 resolution, instead of the optimal 2560×1600 of the monitor.

Answer:Dell Vostro 3750 with Dell U2515H monitor resolution problem

The U2515H HDMI in port can do up to 2560x1440 60Hz. But the U2515H does not dictate the resolution. That is done by the capabilities of the laptop GPU video card. The 2011 Vostro 3750 HDMI out must be limited to 1920.

I have done the custom settings for battery from dell power management. I have set that the battery should start charging when it is at 50% and stop charging at 80%. When the battery has charged 80%.It has stopped charging. But the discharging of the battery is not happening itself. I have to remove the ac power so that the laptop should start using battery instead of ac power. The battery should self discharge when it reaches 80% and start charging when it reaches 50%. which is not happening currently. Can any suggest any solution.

The system will use AC power in preference to battery if the adapter is connected.  If you want the system to run on battery, you must disconnect the adapter.

I have a Dell Vostro 230 Mini Tower, and it currently has the Intel Pentium E6500 processor. I would like to upgrade to something better, because my current processor does not meet the minimum requirements of some games I would like to play. I was wondering which processors I could upgrade to? I know that the new processor has to fit the socket on the motherboard, but I don't know how to find out what socket my current motherboard has, or even what motherboard it is.
I would also like to know, if I don't upgrade the processor, but instead get a new motherboard, can I get any motherboard, and plug it in, and will it come with a new processor, or will it have to fit my current processor? Does upgrading the motherboard make much difference to the CPU speeds if I don't actually upgrade the processor?
I am running Windows & SP3, DirectX 11, with 4GB RAM, and i also have an ATI Radeon 5670 HD Graphics Card, and a 300W power supply.
Would I need to get a new power supply if I upgraded the motherboard or processor?

Hello,

I was wondering if anyone would be so kind to assist with a problem that suddenly started with my second computer (Dell Vostro 400)
Its running windows 7 home premium and all the sudden it now stops at the Dell bios version screen. It did this a couple times the lastfew days, but when I restarted it, it booted ok, but when I checked on it later then the computer was frozen again with a black screen.  I have borrowed another computer from work and swapped out the hard drive, and it works fine with the other computer (same hardware). So I dont think its the hard drive. Any advice on this would be much appreciated.

Cheers

I bought my Dell Vostro 3800 ST almost 2 years ago, sadly I didn't really do my research before I bought it, and it turns out, card that came with it wasn't really great for gaming and it's nearing the end of it's life.
So I'm planning to buy proper card, but my tower is waaay to slim to fit in it comfortably.
So my question is, will I be able to take my motherboard to another, non-Dell case? If so, what type of case would be good? I did try to find online, what type of motherboard it is, but if there's an answer to that question, I can't find or understand it.
I'd be grateful for any help provided :)

Answer:Will my motherboard from Dell Vostro 3800 ST fit into non-Dell case?

It's more or less a micro-ATX board so it will likely fit a standard case.  That said, wiring the power switch, hard drive LEDs, etc. will be difficult - they're not standard and it may be a lot of trial and error to make work.

I downloaded and installed Windows 8 on my Vostro 3550 laptop (dual booting with the original Win7 Pro x64). It would get as far as "Installing Devices" and then the screen would go off. After several failed attempts (>10)(screen woluld go blank but HD activity would continue), I went to the Win8 forums and found a few others having the same problem. Someone suggested using an external monitor and checking. Once I installed the monitor, I found that the Win 8 installed correctly, but failed to recognise the internal display. Everything works fine in Win8, except it does not recognise the internal display. So I installed the Win7 video drivers from Dell, still no change. Then Win8 update said there are new Intel video drivers which it installed, with no improvement. Works with external monitor, but does not detect internal monitor. I am not sure wether it is video driver issue or something to do with chipset drivers. Funnily Win8 works fine on an old HP Pavillion 5200 laptop as well as a on an assembled Intel motherboard Core2 Quad desktop with ATI graphics card. My Vostro config is Win7 Pro x64, 8 GB RAM, 320 GB 7200 HD, Intel HD3000 Graphics.
Can someone help me with this issue.

This is my first post on this forum. Thank you for your time and help.

I have the Windows 7 Beta disc and I am trying to create a partition and install it on my Dell Vostro 220 (see my profile for full PC details).

I have 3 partitions:
FAT16 - Primary - 70MB FAT16 - 0xDE (EISA Configuration)
OS (C) - Primary, Active - 152.2GB NTFS (Windows XP Pro)
NTFS (F) - 80.61GB NTFS (Empty)
I am trying to install Windows 7 on partition 3, but the installation is giving me an error: "Windows could not update the computer's boot configuration. Installation cannot proceed."

Here's my procedure:
Insert CD
Restart
Boot from CD
Start Installation
"Custom (Advanced)" Installation
Created new partition on unallocated space (currently partition 3 NTFS)
Copying files... OK
Expanding files...
Error: "Windows could not update the computer's boot configuration. Installation cannot proceed."
Restart and boot XP
Software I'm using on XP that may be interfering:
Acronis Disk Director Suite 10.0
ESET Nod32 Antivirus 3.0.650.0
Any ideas on what I can do to fix this error and eventually dual boot XP Pro and Windows 7?

Hi,

The Dell web site says that Dell doesn't support Windows 10 on Dell Vostro 1710.

But just letting people know that it works perfectly well. One driver - the SD card reader driver for O2Micro OZH24, is missing post-installation, but the following link can solve that problem.

Toshiba's M300 O2 Card Reader Controller driver

Also, don't manually install any NVidia Video drivers. Just let windows get its updates.

After the installation has completed, you have removed the DVD, so that it may then boot to windows 8, rather than back to the DVD - have you?

Not that you are at this stage but I also notice that Dell have released a BIOS update version A11 to fix a problem on Windows 8

Hi There,

I have a few Dell Vostro Machines that contain 2 Disks. The primary OS disk being an SSD, and the secondary being a HDD. These are both activated within the bios and are readable/writeable through windows.

I am facing only issues when installing anniversary updates it seems. Once I update the machine with the AU updates and reboot, we get errors such as " operating system not found", "utility partition not found".

Upon inspection using testdisk, the MBR is completely gone. It contains no data, no partition tables exist either. I fix it with the following:

I firstly use testdisk to find all the partitions and write them into the partition table.

Then I boot into a windows ISO and run bootrec.

>_bootrec /fixboot>_bootrec /fixmbr>_bootrec /scanos>_bootrec /rebuildbcd>_bootsect /nt60 all /force
Now this will temporarily fix the issue, until we reboot again at some point, then I need to go through the whole process again.

One way that I'm fixing this is to disable the Updates completely and removing the AU updates. This works fine, rebooting doesn't cause any more MBR boot failures. Upon allowing the updates to come back through, the MBR will be trashed once more.

It seems to be these 1 or both of these 2 updates that are causing it KB3176936 / KB3189866.

Do you have any suggestions? I'm pulling my hair out. I've tried a clean install, which didn't work, the same issue occurred.

I have a Dell Vostro 1500 laptop with Windows XP Home Edition. My problem is I was getting runtime errors and the computer was freezing up a lot. I'm broke and got the computer from Circuit World (which is a rent-to-own electronics store for any of you who may not be familiar with it) and they did not provide me with any software, no Recovery discs and no utilities discs either. The laptop has a builtin webcam and of course the basic Dell Utilities are pre-installed. I have a Windows XP Home disc and would like to install it, but I'm not sure how or even if I can. I would also like to be able to use the builtin webcam after reformatting/reconfiguring the computer, but not sure I can do that either. I'm sure I could get help from Dell, but only if I am willing to pay for tech support due to the fact that the warranty on this laptop expired quite some time ago and I don't have a credit card either, but I am sure that I'm intelligent enough to resolve and repair any problems myself if I could just get some professional guidance. So if anyone can help me or at least tell me if I need the utility drivers in order to use the builtin, pre-installed webcam and if I can install Windows XP from my disc (a reminder: this disc did NOT come with the laptop. I have no software for this computer at all), I would really appreciate it! I have yahoo, hotmail and skype messengers if anyone knows how to help me with these problems, has patience and the time and know-how.... Read more

Hello, I've formatted the computer 3 times to solve the non shutting down issue, so I'm starting to believe is somehow hardware related.
I was using Windows Insider Preview (fast ring) and then (slow ring). Last December, the laptop stop shutting down completely. It starts the process, video is black, no sign of disk activity but the on/off light start on and the fans are running. Only way is to hard power off with the button.
Reinstalling Windows from scratch solves at first boots, but then start failing again. I've moved to slow ring of Windows Insider. No luck. Then for the Windows 10 Pro that I'm running now.
All updates from Windows and from Dell Detect System were applied successfully. I've tried to run Intel Update tool. It detects the network driver could be updated, download and applied successfully, but no luck, the computer does not sleep completely nor hibernate.
I've tried disabling Hybrid sleep mode. I've tried to disable Hibernation all over (powercfg.exe /hibernate off) without working.
All seems well with the computer, excepts the shutting down process.
Can anybody help me? Thanks.

Hi,
I bought a new Dell Vostro 3900 with Windows 8.1 pro pre-installed last month from Dell. I tried to update to windows 10 but the software crashed my pc.
I managed to boot up in windows 8.1 again but is now asking for a product key. I cant see one on the pc case and never had an email or any paper work with a product key on it.

\Is there anyway to find out what my product key was, so I can re-enter it to activate windows again?

Thanks in advance,
Stuart

Hi,

I just installed a fresh copy of Windows 10 Pro on my Dell Vostro 1400 laptop. Everything works fine except I can't hear any audio from my speakers. When I plug in the earphones then audio works fine.
I previously had Windows 8.1 and the speakers worked flawlessly there. Now when I tried to install the http://www.dell.com/support/home/us/en/19/Drivers/DriversDetails?driverId=NN9X1&fileId=3327213123&osCode=WW1&productCode=vostro-1400&languageCode=EN&categoryId=AU it threw an " Error: ExitError:Error=Device Object not present ". I tried uninstalling the current drivers, then reinstalling them but that didnt work. I think if I could get the Sigmatel audio drivers installed then my audio would be back but I wasn't able to fix this error.
If anyone has any ideas how to fix this I would really appreciate it!
Thanks,
Tim

Answer:No Audio Dell Vostro 1400 - Windows 10.

Sorry for late reply -- must have overlooked your post.
MrAudioProblemtried to install the http://www.dell.com/support/home/us/en/19/Drivers/DriversDetails?driverId=NN9X1&fileId=3327213123&osCode=WW1&productCode=vostro-1400&languageCode=EN&categoryId=AU
That's an XP driver. Win10 is supposed to work with Win7 and 8.1 drivers, so Win10 might not be a good fit with the Vostro 1400. Try the Vista version, Sigmatel R171786. Download the driver package and extract the files (unzip or unpack and make a note of the name of the folder that is created) but cancel the installation process. Go to the folder on the hard drive to which you unpacked the driver files which should bec:\Dell\Drivers\R171786
Find the setup.exe file and right click on it. Select the Properties. Find the compatibility tab and select Vista.
If still no luck then I would advise you to revert to Win8.1.

Answer:Can't install windows 7 on Dell Vostro v131

This error is caused by a bad installer. Confirm your ISO or download another to be sure, write to flash stick using Universal USB Installer with Win7 in dropdown menu. Boot under USB, Removable or HD's using one-time BIOS Boot Menu key, with HD set to boot first in BIOS setup.

Hi Friends,

I am new to this site. Looking for a solution for a problem I am trying to solve for last two days.

I bought a Dell Vostro 3445 laptop a week back which had linux installed. My wife wanted to use this for her office work and needed Windows 7 to be installed. I installed windows 7 Ultimate on that laptop and it is now not accepting some of the drivers.

I am not able to use wi-fi as the wifi driver is not available on the dell driver site. I call the Dell tech support. The agent tried all sorts of things but still no use. He said that Dell has not released the drivers for this laptop yet. (Released in May 2014 it seems)

Below are the list of drivers showing a yellow bang -

Network Controller
PCI Encryption / Decription Controller
SM Bus controller
Universal Serial bus controller.

I was able to install the Realtech driver for the LAN so I can go online with the internet cable.

Please let me know what information you require got find any solutions for me.

Thanks in advance. Any help would be highly appreciated.

The minidumps are pointing to a memory fault, but you might want to run a check of the hard drive too

Because of a virus, I recently had to reinstall Windows 7 Professional 64-bit. I have gotten everything else working except the fingerprint reader.I have installed the Validity Fingerprint Reader driver from the Dell Support site. The fingerprint reader shows up in the Device Manager. However, the Biometric Devices applet doesn't appear in the Control Panel.
I tried letting Windows update detect the fingerprint reader. It installed a driver for a Synaptics device. This was enough to get the Biometric Devices applet to appear in the Control Panel. However, when I tried to configure the fingerprint reader, I got an error saying no fingerprint management software was installed. I have seen lots of posts online directing me to validityinc.com for drivers or the DigitalPersona software, but Validity Inc. seems to have gone out of business. The DigitalPersona software is available on the Dell Support site for my service tag.
I have even tried installing the Windows 8 Validity Sensor Driver for my laptop, but though it successfully installs, it produces the same results.
I don't know what else to do. Any ideas?

I've just installed windows 7 (64 bit) on my dell vostro 1500. Everything works fine but there are 2 slight problems that are annoying me.

1. It seems like the fan is always on. What driver controls this? (so that I can get the appropriate driver or is it the BIOS that controls the fan?)

2. Also, the hard drive accesses some data for a split second every 10 seconds or so. It does this all the time even when idle or on the logon screen. Any idea why this happens?

Thanks

Windows 10 Enterprise Build: 15063.483

Answer:Dell Vostro 3905 Desktop: Windows 10 Drivers

In most cases Win 10 will automatically download whatever drivers are needed.
When I installed Win 10 on my Dell Inspiron laptop, on a second drive for my recording studio, it installed all the drivers including video, sound, touchpad, etc.   Same way on my recording studio DAW workstation (tower).
Valid Win 10 64 bit OS drivers are listed on the Dell downloads.  As you have an Enterprise OS version, may be some specific Administrator privileges are needed.  Have you tried installing them as Administrator?

I used the driver cleanup tool (DDU) before installing.
My bios is updated. The driver worked with Windows 8.1 Pro x64.

Answer:Dell Vostro 5470 problem with GT 740M on Windows 10 Pro 64-bit

I got the same problem. Try every method and still no luck.
At first when I upgraded from windows 8.1, the driver worked well but after the update on 29th, it stopped working and even I tried to reinstall the old driver, It keeps showing code 43 error. :(
I also try to install driver which is listed in Dell website but it didnt work too. Asked on Dell US's facebook, they guided me to use the auto-scan tool on NVIDIA website but after I used it to install newest version of driver (353.62), no luck happened.
I think we must wait for further update. :(

Due to the presence of NTFS.sys in the stack text, and the possibility that malfunctioning memory can cause STOP 0xBE errors (more info here: http://www.carrona.org/bsodindx.html#0x000000BE )
I would start with these bootable hardware diagnostics:

H/W Diagnostics:
Please start by running these bootable hardware diagnostics:

http://www.carrona.org/hddiag.html (read the details at the link)

There may be issues with your Avira antivirus. Please uninstall/reinstall the program.

I have an old Dell Vostro 1500 laptop that the screen no longer works consistently. I thought it would still be good enough to install Window 10 on to try out and hook it up to an external monitor. Install went fine and everything was going well. I hooked up the external monitor and couldn't get it to work. About the same time the LCD screen on the monitor stopped working as well. I know its a long shot, but could this be some driver issue with the laptop video card? I installed Win 10 64bit. Would reinstalling with 32 bit be more apt to work? Thanks for any insight.

Recenty I install Windows 8 to my laptop (Dell Vostro 3300). But When I plug in the adapter, it just a few seconds to charge and back to  not charging anymore. even when I shutdown and plug in, it still wont charge.
I already try to uninstall the ACPI driver and unplug, restart and plug in again. in fact, I already try all options that show when I google it.
I try to switch with other batterie and adapter from my friend with same version of my laptop, but  still it wont charge. please help me to solved this. thank you.

Answer:Dell Vostro 3300 in Windows 8 Not Charging When Plug In

Hi BILLY_SHN,
Are you using an original Dell adapter? Is the adapter frayed? When you plug in the adapter to the system, does the adapter stay in firm or does it fall off easily? Is there any charge on the battery available?
If the battery charge is more than 10% - then update the BIOS - http://dell.to/28ORaZe
Restart the system and press f2 key to enter BIOS - check the adapter status in BIOS with and without the adapter plugged in. Also, wiggle the adapter cable at the end and see if the status changes in BIOS at any point.
Restart the system and press f12 key on startup - choose diagnostics. Let it run the diags and if you encounter any errors - make a note of the complete error and report the same to us.
If there is no warranty, then you could contact our team to get a quote for a paid service call - http://dell.to/1vnT6CQ

Hi there I have a dell vostro 1520 that I bought 2nd hand about 2 months ago. Has run seamlessly until a couple of days ago when it began running ridiculously slow and took minutes just to load icons on the control panel screen and each program I would open would say not responding. And that windows is missing files and suggesting that I should check settings in sound and audio and something about the region setting. I couldn't find the problem and tried restarting the laptop. Only now it only goes thru the dell startup screen where it says press f12 boot options then goes to a blank screen which it stays on forever. I have put the windows disk in and reinstalled it but now it still goes to the blank screen after asking which windows to load up. Oh and before I reinstalled windows and tried to boot up it said it is missing files or it's not meant to run windows on this on this computer or something to that effect. Checking memory is coming up with no probs. and I tried system restore to a previous date but it says there is no previous image to restore too. I don't know what to do now!

Answer:Solved: a problem while installing windows 7 on dell vostro !

Check if your computer could detect your hard drive in BIOS.
If so, try to boot up from a WindowsXP CD and run command prompt, then format your HDD.
Make sure you have a copy from all your data somewhere else, so that format will erase all your data.
