Network disconnected on cold boot-necessary to reboot

Question: Network disconnected on cold boot-necessary to reboot

Hello
I have WXP-Pro on my self built computer and also my laptop.

My laptop and desktop computers are WiFi-ed using a Netgear Access Point.
The access point is connected by cat 5 cable to a Direcway DW6000 (2-way satellite) modem.

My Desktop has a PCI Adapter installed and my laptop has a built-in WiFi capability.

I never turn my modem off. If I want to use the internet from my laptop, I just boot it up and I am connected. However, when I boot my desktop, it does not connect. If I go to DOS and use ipconfig /all, I am told that the media is disconnected. I have to reboot to get a connection.

This is a repeatable problem.
How do I fix this?

Preferred Solution: Network disconnected on cold boot-necessary to reboot

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Answer: Network disconnected on cold boot-necessary to reboot

do you have a static ip address. if not, make sure your internet option lan settings are set to find dhcp automatically. if u do have static ip, make sure its set in your lan settings.

Hi all,

I've bought a new PC and I've noticed that whenever the power is disconnected when it's off it does the scanning and repairing thing when I turn it back on again. This is if I turn it off at the plug, or the few power cuts I've had while I've had it. I'm fairly certain I've been turning it off properly, I was just wondering if this is something anybody has heard about before and if I should worry about it.
Thanks!

Hi all,

Basically, whenever I first boot up, there's a yellow "!" icon over my Network icon in the taskbar after it tries to connect for a few seconds. My router is connected to the internet and this is even confirmed in my browser (when I visit my IP address), however my browser will connect to no websites and I can't receive email. All the lights are on on my router. My router is a BT Home Hub V1.5 (I'm in the UK). Network card is, according to Device Manager, a Realtek RTL8168C(P) Family PCI-E Gigabit Ethernet NIC (NDIS 6.20).

I've tried rebooting the router, reconnecting using the browser utility mentioned above, and even pulling the Ethernet cable out of the back of the computer and sticking it back in. Our other computer, which uses Windows XP, connects just fine on the same connection via wireless.

I'm pretty I downloaded the drivers for my network card from Windows Update.

This is a new computer, built this year; I didn't have the problem when I first installed Windows but it's cropped up since then, and has finally reached the point where it happens every single boot up.

The only solution I've found is to reboot. Weirdly enough, this works every single time. But it is getting very annoying having to do this every time I first boot up my PC.

So, does anyone have any idea what could be stopping Windows 7 from detecting my internet connection until I reboot?

Any advice is much appreciated!

Hello guys,

I'm stumped. I have an Intel Quad core system giving me some headaches.

4 memory slots on the motherboard - 2x2GB + 2x1GB sticks.

System cold boot speed is fine, but on a reboot it takes about 300 seconds to go from the "Starting windows" animation to the desktop.

This is a clean install of Windows 7 x64.

Memory tests OK - (PC Check, Windows Memory Diagnostics, Memtest86)

Reboot speed OK with one stick of 2GB
Reboot speed slow with two sticks of 2GB

Reboot speed OK if I replace both 2GB sticks with the 1GB sticks

Has anyone run into anything like this?

Thanks!

Answer:Cold boot OK, very slow reboot

No, but it's an interesting one.

I realise it's time-consuming, but did you check your RAM sticks one at a time and in each socket?

If the problem is RAM-related, you'll need to establish whether a RAM module is faulty or a RAM socket.

Hello All,

I've been running into this on and off for some time now. the pc will crash a few minutes after a cold boot usually as I try to access the internet, but runs OK after the pc reboots. This also crops up coming out of hibernation (reopening the pc). I don't know if the two are related.
Attached is the zip from the latest cold boot/reboot.
Thanks for the help.

My Toshiba laptop boot/reboot is very slow (about 3 minutes)

I have ...
1. disabled all non essential startups and services
2. defragged system files
3. defragged data files
4. disabled Classic Shell start-menu "Pre-cache icons"

Just read "Brinks" How to Enable or Disable Defrag of Boot Files at Startup in Vista

Are the Vista settings applicable to Win7 x32 (and 64-bit) ?
My x32 registry does not contain the "Enable" value/name

I would appreciate any advice

I have been working on a WXP computer. It was taking 15 minutes to boot. I deleted the prefetch folder and disabled all non-essential startup programs plus ran 2 anti-virus scans and defragged the HD.

After all that, a cold restart takes a little over a minute, however a shutdown and restart takes 15 minutes.

What the heck is going on?

After cleaning out my heat sink and removing dust, I can no longer access my BIOS as the reboot hangs when I press the DEL key to access BIOS. If I let the system stay off 30 secs, it will cold boot just fine. But it will not reboot with Ctrl-Alt-Del or reset, or by restart in shutdown. I could do all of these prior to fixing my random shutdown issue which is now solved. I am really concerned about not being able to access BIOS. Any ideas? Did I knock a cable loose?

Answer:2000 won't reboot, cold boot only

Well could be. You need to reseat every plug and cable inside tower. Gently push down on any pci cards also,

upon cold boot or reboot, i'm unable to get a net connection without power cycling the router and many attempts at the various repair connection options. generally it takes about 5 mins to get the connection working. after it's working, it's fine...getting there is a bi$h, tho.

this same problem has shown itself in rc1, rc2, and now, build 5840. any thoughts on this? is there an asrock beta driver ftp to try another lan driver?

Answer:lose internet connection on reboot or cold boot

Thats odd.
Sounds like the router isn't assigning an IP to your NIC when it loses its connection (PC reboot)... which to me sounds more like a problem with the router than the NIC, but I've been wrong plenty of times in the past. I guess it'd be easy enough to try another NIC. I'm assuming you're using the onboard integrated NIC? You can try a different driver... you can also try a different NIC altogether... if you can get your hands on one.

I've never cared for any of the onboard NIC solutions available on motherboards... not even the gigabit ports. I've always been a fan of 3Com and Intel NICs. Currently using Intel gigabit PCI NICs.

So ever since I upgraded to a GeForce GTX 460, I've been getting these ~1min long freezes every time my PC just finished loading Windows (either after a cold boot or reboot).

What could be causing this?

EDIT: This didn't happen to me with my old Radeon HD 5770.

Answer:Windows freezes for over ~1 minute after each cold boot/reboot

I would suspect a driver issue fist thing. Check here for the July 2010 version: Drivers - Download NVIDIA Drivers

I have a lenovo y560 (w7 64 home premium) w/ a strange issue - if I reboot the PC it will be stuck in the windows loading screen with no HDD activity. If I power off and power on, its fine every time.I tried a startup repair (automatic) which actually broke it entirely, it couldn't detect BCD or some similar error msg. Tried command line recovery with bootrec, bootsect, no dice, it couldn't even see any installations. So I re-imaged the PC using recovery disks... and the problem is still there! LOLThe complication is that its got rapiddrive. You can see the SSD in device manager and disk management, however Lenovo is hiding everything behind its software, e.g. in disk management you don't see any partitions active at all! I don't know if this has anything to do with it. Anyone got any hints where to look? I am so confused as to why its a problem if its a reboot, but not when its a cold boot.

Answer:Cold boot OK, reboot = stuck on windows loading screen (rapiddrive?)

re-install graphic card drivers, press f8 to load safe mode to check the issue persists on safe mode, too ( may having graphic card driver issue ), try to re-seat your ram sticks and post back if it doesn't fix your issue.

Here's my strange problem:

I have a 120gb Seagate HDD that I use for backup storage. I have been using the drive for about 5 months now without a problem. One day I booted it up and realized that BIOS did not detect it. It is currently SECONDARY SLAVE. The strange part is, once I get into winxp, it sees the drive - albeit in PIO ONLY mode instead of DMA. Once I do a reboot (NOT A COMPLETE SHUTDOWN), BIOS sees the drive and it functions normally again - winxp sees the drive as correctly functioning and in DMA mode.

What's strange is that once I start up the computer from a cold boot, go into BIOS, and check what devices are where, BIOS does not see anything in secondary slave at first. Once, I do an "auto detect" it picks up the info on my HDD and it works fine.

I've tried flashing the BIOS and the problem persists. HOWEVER, the drive works fine as secondary MASTER. I swapped my sec. slave and master and the setup works fine. The device that I put into slave (a liteon 811s dvd writer) detects correctly and works fine in windows. I just have no idea why the seagate drive does not detect at first boot.

Here are my specs:
pentium 4 2.4
EliteGroup L4S8A2 mobo latest 1.0E BIOS
PRIMARY MASTER: maxtor 80gb
PRIMARY SLAVE: seagate 80gb
SECONDARY MASTER: liteon 811s
SECONDARY SLAVE: seagate 120gb (problem drive)
OS: WinXP Pro SP1

Please provide any feedback, this is driving me crazy!

Answer:VERY strange Seagate HDD problem - cannot detect on cold boot, but detects on reboot

A big drive like that 120G requires an 80-wire IDE flat-cable. It will run on a 40-wire cable but only at a reduced rate. Being on the same cable as a CD, reduces the HD to the DMA/PIO level of that CD.
The CD-drive only needs a 40-wire and will probably not even function with an 80-wire cable.
So unless you get another PCI-IDE controller, you will have some speed and/or compatibility problems.
Make that 120GB master and run that CD as slave, since that works (as you say).

I cleaned out an old laptop and re-installed win xp. Put all the usual programs on it. I joined it to our office domain.

Now something weird is happening.

If the office's network cable is plugged in it boots up fine and quickly too.

If you take the network cable out it displays the desktop wallpaper for 10 min and then it'll load the icons and taskbar. Ctrl+alt+del doesn't work.

I've checked in regedit and explorer.exe settings seem to be fine. It'll either be a program timing out in the background or it's looking for a network connection or something.

Do you know anyway to check what it is? I'm hoping you've seen this before.

It's one of those 5 min jobs that's just dragging on lol

Answer:Win XP Slow boot when disconnected from network

If you are logging onto the Domain and the network cable is unplugged, then the computer is trying to send a signal to the Domain Controller at login to accept it's credentials. If the laptop has no network connection it cannot login to the Domain and it will default to the local account. Unless there is a wireless connection.

So after one of the recent Windows 10 updates, whenever I turn on my computer, the network won't work. I tried troubleshooting and I get a message saying "Intel Gigabit network connection adapter is experiencing driver - or hardware - related problems". But if I just restart my computer it boots back up and everything is fine. Thoughts?

Sometimes my machine has a problem that requires a cold boot. Memory is not completely cleared with a warm reboot.

My question is: If I hold down the reset button for a few seconds, will memory be completely cleared? If so, how many seconds should I hold down the reset button?

The reason I ask is that my machine has some SCSI drives that take a minute or two to get up to speed from a cold boot.

Thanks for your answer.

Answer:Warm vs Cold reboot

As long as power is being fed to the memory chips the memory will remain there. You have to do a cold boot (cut off the power) in order to completely clear DRAM.

This has started since the updates the other day.

A power up boot (not a restart) does a router reset, not just of the Ethernet line, the whole kit and caboodle, including the external link. It happens in the first Windows startup phase i.e. when the smaller blue 'flag' is on show. Like all DSL routers I've ever known, mine takes a couple of minutes to to a reset.

Whilst the reset is happening Windows tries to establish a link to the 'net, obviously it can't because the router hasn't completed its reset cycle. I've tried the network troubleshooter - guess what, it tells me to reset the router. Which I duly do and wait the customary couple of minutes for the ADSL led to show a solid light.

After another minute or two Windows discovers it has a good connection. I then have to 'nudge' the programs that failed to start properly because they expect the 'net to be there, in order to get them to have another go at doing there start up 'thing'.

As far as I'm concerned the claims that Windows 10 boots faster are now complete and utter nonsense.

Anyone know how to INSTRUCT Windows to leave the &^%#*%* router alone

The Router is a TP-Link 300Mbps Wireless N ADSL2+ Modem Router TD-W8960N. Because I rarely use it, the Wifi capabilities are turned 'off'.

Answer:Cold Reboot Resets Router

I had a similar issue with Kaspersky and my VMNG 300 modem (Ambit 300 VirginMedia) and 3rd party router. Any attempt to access the config page of the modem to check power levels etc (192.168.100.1) with Kaspersky enabled locked the modem, all lights locked. Still baffled to this day. No solution, just thought I'd share. Kaspersky off was fine.

Your issue must be querying or requesting a DHCP lease causes it to spaz out. Weird.

Firmware update or try services.msc and settings DHCP to delayed start. Shot in the dark.

Hello! My Vista x64 runs very slowly sometimes or hangs. Usually when I try to open my browser (mozilla). I tried reinstalling mozilla, I've tried running it without addons - doesn't help. i have tried installing chrome - it does the same thing.

this morning i woke it from sleep, clicked on my browser and it just sat - this hangs the entire PC. so i pressed the power button. when it was rebooted, i tried again to use the browser - this usually works, it didn't this morning and i had to reboot it again. then it worked fine. when the little circle is swirling, i have tried to access the task manager thru ctrl-alt-del but it says something about a security error and i can't access when it is hanging (i can access it other times using ctrl-alt-del) - i was hoping to cancel the firefox.exe in the processes.

I have run the following antivirus/antispywares (usually do this weekly) - drcureit, defender, spybot search & destroy, superantispyware, avast, eset, adware, malwarebytes. i have found things and removed them and rerun til it's clean.

i have run the following temp file cleaners - ccleaner, tfc (old timer)

i have defragged

anything else i can do short of re-installing vista or buying a new PC?

Hi acr1127,

We can try few steps. Try to go in safe mode and check if you are able to login in safe mode. Please use the following link for detailed instructions to go safe mode: Safe Mode

Check if the computer is working fine in safe mode.

Also, run the built-in diagnostics provided by the manufacturer on the computer to check if the hardware is working fine.

Please post back with the results.

Hi guys,

I seem to encounter another problem today with my computer. After using it last night and booting it up earlier this morning, I got a BSOD with a PFN_LIST_CORRUPT as its reason. I tried to resume loading Windows 7 normally, however it restarts a few seconds upon a successful user log in. I switched to Safe Mode and then performed a sfc /scannow on the command prompt (three times), with 2 results saying it encountered no problems, and one being unable to finish.

Anyway, I can't run a perfmon test successfully in Safe mode, but I managed to get the dump files somehow. Attached below would be the dump files.

I'd really appreciate it if someone can help me fix this.

I have a new Dell XPS 13 (9350) that has been updated with the latest drivers.  The Laptop has an 1820A Broadcom network adapter.  When I cold boot the system I am unable to play YouTube videos, and certain websites and apps do not load.  If I restart the computer after the cold boot, everything works as expected.  This is consistent -- it happens each time the system is turned off.
Please let me know if you have ideas how to fix this issue so that the laptop connects properly after being turned off - many thanks.

I use a wired connection for internet. If I unplug, for example to do some offline work acros the room, and try to reconnect I find I must reboot in order to connect again to he internet. Using Win NT2000

Answer:must reboot if internet is disconnected

If the problem is recent, install "XP TCP Repair", reset the TCP/IP Protocol, restart the computer, on the same application repair the Winsock and restart the computer. If the problem persists it may be caused by hardware.. replace the wire, reinstall/replace the Connection adaptor or device. If the problem's always been there, may be the motherboard or bios doesn't support in-session reconnections if it's older.. I know my older system with an austere and basic bios had such incapacities... Maybe you should take a virtual approach to disable/enable your connection.. goto Control Panel \ Network Connections \ right click on the Connection \ Properties \ and uncheck the Internet tcp/ip Protocol.. check again to reconnect... or check some tips to create a regedit file which you can right click \ merge to disable the connection and a copy with an edited difference to enable it.. there are some VBS Scripts around that can do the job but I didn't a good one, you could also use some application.. this is one http://www.gearboxcomputers.com/pro... (good 4 w2k) is $14.95 for single computer use and there must be some for free out there... you just have to search patiently for it.

You could setup a batch file to run at login that does a net use to map the drive.

auto run a bat script in windows 7 at login

Code:

Hey all,

I'm pretty stumped by this one. I was going through the process of flashing my router, and I found that when I disconnected the internet it would, after a short moment, crash to reboot. From there, it would go into a reboot loop until after about three times of not even making it to the start screen, it'd give me the recovery options. The only thing that seemed to fix it was a system restore--unless I reconnected the internet somewhere along the way, then it would usually boot back up.

I've done it a couple of times now (in the name of science), and it's definitely related to having a connection or not. This didn't ever happen before I upgraded to 8.1. Any thoughts?

Answer:NVIDIA card disappears then re-appears after cold reboot

I was able to reproduce the problem. This happens only when I throttle the CPU to less than 50% from Power Options advanced settings.Keeping it like that for few hours apparently causes a conflict between NVIDIA graphics card and 2nd gen Intel i7.The problem can be considered solved.

Since I upgraded to Windows 10 Home from Windows 7, I've noticed that from a cold boot - e.g. PC has been turned off for several hours, the Ethernet network icon has the red X through it and I dont get any internet/network access.

It reports that the cable is unplugged. It definitely is plugged in, it goes straight into a Netgear Powerline homeplug.

If I then reboot, it connects straight away no problem at all.

I havent installed the motherboards LAN drivers, but thought it might be something else before I tried that?

Hey all,

Happy holidays!

I don't know what has triggered my PC to do this but it's driving me up the walls.

After every reboot or a fresh start, my Win8.1 PC always has its WiFi disconnected. It then takes me 2-3 tries to connect to my home WiFi as it returns a simple "couldn't connect to network" error message. I tried re-installing the drivers but that hasn't helped.

The last software that could have triggered is my VPN software. But the problem started to happen a few days AFTER I installed the VPN. The problem doesn't go away even if I disable the VPN's TAP driver. I cannot uninstall my VPN as I need it almost daily.

I hope there is a solution to it. It's so frustrating.

Hi mufaa,
It may be a problem from your WiFi driver can you go to Device Manager then check if your WiFi driver is up to date?

We recently got 3 T61Ps here where I work.  We are all having a similar problem.  When we use them at home on our wireless network they will randomly freeze up at some point.  The cursor will spin, then the window stops responding, then goes gray.  Sometimes the window background turns black.  This leads to a hard reboot to get it back.  Most of the time a reboot has no problems.  However, I've already had to do a rescue once because a critical file during the boot sequence was missing or corrupt after the hard reboot.  I just had a coworker experience the problem this last weekend and he had to use the blue rescue button to recover and found out a registry corruption problem would not let a rescue occur, so he is now reloading it from scratch.  I need to understand what the issue is with these and wireless.  Our wireless drivers, I believe, are up to date.  My driver for Intel Wireless WiFi Link 4965AGN says its using driver 11.5.0.36 (11/27/2007).  Anyone else experiencing this problem, or understands the root cause of this would be greatly appreciated.  This only happens to us when using wireless as I use the laptop all day long on the dock with an ethernet connection.  The laptops came shipped with Vista Business SP1 (32-bit) and we have applied all patches from both Microsoft and Lenovo.

Answer:Thinkpad T61P freezing randomly when using wireless - cold reboot needed

I'd like to report an update to this.  All 3 of us have disabled turbo memory and the problem has so far not come back.  Now I am wondering if SP1 introduced a condition which freezes the turbo cache under certain conditions (wireless being one of them).

Brand new custom computer running windows 7 64 pro with SP1.
I installed the Os, and drivers from the Asus motherboard disk, on the first day I got it, and
from the 2nd day the computer started having random freezes that vary from 1-3 times per day.
The first time was while watching a video, after that freezes would occur during virtually anything.
Sometimes even just from leaving it on without being used.
These are hard freezes and a hard reboot is the only way to get the computer working again.
During the freeze the mouse cursor disappears, audio stops (if on), and the keyboard and mouse produce no response whatsoever.
I can still open the dvd drive but that's it
I've dealt with a lot of PC problems over the years, using different computers, but none like this.

When I check the Windows event viewer logs, there's nothing I've been able to find about what's causing the freezes. Just the error message of "unexpected shutdown", from me having to do a reboot.
I have"WhoCrased" installed on my computer, and that reports nothing about the freezes either.

My temperatures seem to be fine. I have "CoreTemp" installed and "System Information for Windows".
I ran Memtest with no errors.
I flashed the Bios and there were less freezes for a few days. Then they started reoccurring.
I ran a stress test with no problems, and updated all of the drivers from the manufactures website

Hi there,This is my first time posting an issue with my Thinkpad R60e - I've had it for almost 2 years without any major problems and now something serious seems to have happened and I can't figure out what!  My work is in IT Helpdesk, so when something baffles me I usually take it as a bad sign..!A few weeks ago my R60e starting freezing for no apparent reason.  The cursor just stops dead and the screen freezes.  No key has any impact and the only way to get rid of the frozen screen is to press down on the start button until it finally switches off from the power supply.  The only consistency I've noticed is that I am always in the process of typing text when the crash happens - whether it's in my web browser or Excel - I cannot remember it ever crashing when I was not typing.  One time, it even crashed before I had gotten into it, when I was typing my password to log into Windows!  It doesn't crash every time I type text, but when the crash occurs I *will* be typing.  (So now, every time I reach toward the keyboard, I take a deep breath..!)I experimented by uninstalling Firefox (as i had recently updated it) and also by uninstalling all addons in there, but the problem keeps happening.  I removed all unnecessary hardware (external drive, ipod etc) and booted up, but to no avail.  There is no regular frequency - it can be OK for hours, then it can also crash 3 or 4 times in another hour.My main question here is how I can find out ... Hi again,Well after much trial and error I finally figured out what was causing this, so I thought I should post it here in case someone else has a similar problem and their appeals for help similarily draw a blank ... I mentioned in my original post about my recent battery failure - well it did indeed turn out to be the causing factor!I had already uninstalled so much software, ran anti-virus & anti-spyware scans, used Regcleaner, even edited startup items to boot only with the bare essentials - but all to no avail.  So I was becoming more and more convinced it was hardware-related.I read somewhere about how Power Management software could cause this kind of problem and so I uninstalled and disabled anything to do with power management, but this was not enough.  I even booted into my BIOS and also Thinkpad Rescue & Recovery state. I ran various diagnostic tools in there and the only errors reported were related to my dead battery.I began researching in various web forums about battery problems and I was surprised to learn that I could actually run my Thinkpad without any battery attached at all.  Furthermore, I was delighted to discover that I did not even have to go hunting for screwdrivers and allen keys - that one click of my fingernail would swiftly detach the battery from my laptop...So I rebooted my Thinkpad without a battery and just the AV cable .. and the issue disappeared!  I could not believe it was this simple, so I even waited 3 days ... Computer: Dell Inspiron 1525, 320 GB HD with about 2 GB of free space left, 4 MB memory, running Vista Home Premium 32-Bit, SP1, updates current. Just lately, booting from off, Windows will not load, but instead gives me a \Boot\BCD error (0xc00000f)--an error occurred while attempting to read the boot configuration data. I have repaired this error with my Dell-supplied OS disc repeatedly, and each time I turn off the computer it has the same error at startup. I have read that I may have to rebuild the BCD, but I don't know how to do that. Before I check with Dell, who I suspect will just tell me to reload Windows, I need to know how approach fixing my boot configuration data. The computer has had no new software installations, just routine Windows and Trend Micro Internet Security updates, I checked the disc for errors, and a few files were missing or incorrect, and defragmentation has also been performed routinely. Dell PC checkup finds no issues. How should I proceed?

Answer:Boot\BCD error reading boot configuration data when starting from cold boot

Try this hard drive diagnostic procedure: http://usasma.vox.com/library/post/b...agnostics.html

Repeated errors on a hard drive usually indicate an impending failure. I'd backup your stuff as soon as possible.

I have tried everything to get this laptop to go into the bios. I have tried F1, FN+F1, F2, FN+F2, Esc, F11, F12, Enter. I have tried disconnection the CMOS battey same result. I tried removing the hard drive and same results. It keeps saying checking media and then it will try to boot to two seprate networks (which do not exist) and fails the asks me to reboot the syste and around we go again. I have the recovery media. The problem is I can not get into the BIOS to reset it to defaults.  Any suggestions?

Answer:G500 will only try to boot to network - says checking media - then asks for reboot.

Try using the smaller button next to the power button to turn on the notebook. This will allow you to enter BIOS and check your settings for boot devices.Let me know if this does not work.CB

I have a dual boot installation with Windows XP and Windows 7 on the same drive with two partitions. Both work just fine.

However most times that I boot from a cold boot, I get NO Boot options menu, just a blank screen and the hard drive light glows red, but it doesn't really seem to be doing anything.

If I press the reset switch, everything works just fine, the computer reboots, I get a boot options menu for selecting the operating system and either one boots up just fine.

If I shutdown the machine for any period of time, I'll get the blank screen until I do a hard reset.

It seems like the boot loader is not finding the ini file with the options, but only on a cold boot? Any suggestions would be appreciated.

Yesterday Windows Explorer began to stop responding fairly frequently, but would restart itself without issue and continue to run fine. Today, Windows now freezes completely every 45ish minutes - usually a random program stops responding followed by everything, the mouse gets stuck, CTRL+ALT+DELETE does nothing, and it stays frozen this way. I've had one BSOD happen right after this occurs (I couldn't get the error code with auto-reboot but I just turned that off). The most recent freeze I got a "The logon process was unable to display security and logon options when CTRL+ALT+DELETE was pressed" message, and Windows just stayed frozen that way with nothing responding.

Upon hitting Restart button on my case or following the BSOD auto-reboot, my OS drive (a Crucial M4) it isn't detected in the BIOS, leading to a "Disk Boot Failure" message. Oddly, if I do a cold boot from this point and power back on, the Crucial M4 is detected and Windows starts normally. I can also boot normally after shutting down and restarting from within Windows. But no matter what, around 45 minutes later Windows then freezes again in the exact same way, repeating the cycle. I'm totally at a loss, please help!

I'm new here and have searched the web but can't seem to find similar symptoms.
I've noticed after performing various updates (either to whatever programs or Windows itself - any ones that require a re-start) that when I re-start my laptop and when the Alienware logo appears, booting basically freezes. I'm only having issues when I restart...even when there are no pending updates to anything.
I tested today and booting actually continues on its own, but VERY slowly.  If I get stuck at this screen and I press my power button, the laptop immediately turns off.  Pressing the power button again boots the machine (to what I consider) normally.  It basically whizzes by the Alienware logo screen and into Windows without issue.  If I fully shutdown, then use the power button to boot up, everything goes normally too.  Re-starting (anytime) is when my issue occurs.

This seems to be a widespread issue with various Thinkpads and various SSDs but I have yet to find a solution that works for me. I have a T400 with the latest BIOS (3.24 2012-10-17) and a SanDisk Ultra Plus SSD with the latest firmware. Since installing the SSD the system ALWAYS gives immediate Error 2100 on a cold boot and ALWAYS boots perfectly into Windows from a warm boot, e.g. a ctrl-alt-del from the error screen or a restart from Windows. I have tried everything that I could find on the internet to no avail. Any suggestions as to what causes this and any way around it?

Answer:T400 with SanDisk Ultra Plus SSD Error 2100 on Cold Boot but fine on warm boot (ctrl-alt-del)

Hello and welcome,

FWIW my best guess as to what causes this is timing.  Some SSD's internal controllers take longer to come to an operational state than the laptop's BIOS allows.  BIOS times out waiting on the drive and throws the error.

Warm boot works because the drive has had power long enough to complete its internal start-up.

I had a similar problem with a Crucial m4.  Fortunately it cured itself after a drive firmware update.  One interesting thing was that simply doing an update could cause the problem - until the drive had finished its internal housekeeping following the update.

This isn't much help   You might be able to finesse the problem by tuning off the "Quick Boot" option in the T400's BIOS.  Depending on when the drive timeout happens, this may give the SSD time to power on fully.  Booting will be a little slower.

Z.

Just built a new PC and I've noticed that sometimes I will turn on the PC from cold boot and the boot time will be so fast that I won't even see the "login screen" and the desktop will just pop up.

Other times it seems to take a long time on the login screen alone.

I don't have pending updates or anything, but it seems odd that the boot times vary without installing new software/peripherals.

Is this normal behavior?

Booting on an ssd of course.

Answer:Boot times different on every cold boot/restart. Windows 10

It's possible that it's performing a full boot sometimes and a "hiberboot" on others.

Hello,

My Lenovo laptop is pretty fast at cold boot. It takes about 12 seconds from initial bios screen to desktop.

On the other hand, warm boot is really slow. The same period takes about 51 seconds, involving a long black screen.

Actually, it was similiar at Windows 8.1 as well. What can be the cause of that?

Thanks

Answer:Slow warm boot & Fast cold boot

Start Microsoft event viewer.
Expand Application and Services Logs.
Expand Microsoft/Windows/Diagnostic–Performance
Click on Operational. In the Windows that opens up check out event IDs 100 and 200. When you expand these event IDs you will see a detailed breakout of boot event durations. They should help you identify the particular issues. In a cold restart you should only have an event ID of 100 while in the reboot you will have 200 followed by 100.

I'm having a problem with booting my laptop - but only when cold-booting.

Never heard about this problem before. I can reboot just fine, and if i acces the BIOS and just go straight on exiting, not changing anything - it too boots windows normally without any hitches.

How is booting different from cold-boot to rebooting or through BIOS? I've been toying around with EFI boots, but everything [should be] reverted and i used my windows disc to repair the boot sequence. After the BIOS splash it just lingers and the "starting windows" gui doesnt appear.

Edit and edit2: I've now tried for a couple of times to let it sit, and it does boot up after about 4 minutes consistently. It goes like this:
I press power on. After,
3 seconds the BIOS splash comes on.
7 seconds the screen goes black.
4 min 0 seconds the screen turns off, then immediately turns on again with a black screen.
4 min 3 seconds the BIOS splash reappears.
4 min 7 seconds the "windows starting" gui comes on.
4 min 25 secs windows is booted up and responsive.

So the Black screen is consistently just about 3 minutes and 53 seconds. All BIOS settings are properly set to boot from HDD. No external HDDs or FDDs connected. Even removed the excess drive letter assignments in windows to be safe.
Satas in AHCI for the OS-SSD (and a spindle for storage). Booting from spindle drive is disabled in BIOS.

Its a brand new machine, and it worked properly when i formatted it to begin with and in... Read more

I am running Windows XP SP3. This is what happens after the computer has been shut down for the night.

I push the power button to get it started. Sometimes it goes through the boot process and finishes because I hear the Windows tune play. But then the monitor stays black even though the power button on the monitor has lit up.

Sometimes when I push the power button to turn on the computer it never gets to the point of playing the Windows tune and the monitor stays black.

I have to push and hold in the power button to shut down the computer and try booting it up again. Usually after the 3rd try it boots successfully. Sometimes holding down the power button does not shut off the power it just seems like it is in hibernatation and the computer makes the sound like it is awakening and then the monitor wakes up.

I have the power set to never for everything and to not hibernate.

I have changed the boot order so it will boot from the hard disk first.
I have reinstalled or however you say it the bios thinking maybe the file was corrupt.
I have updated the graphics drivers
I ran a test last night for the hard disk from Seagate and all of the tests were fine. There is no firmware update for the hard drive.

I have ran malware scans and everything is clean.

Any ideas? I know the computer is old and probably on it's last legs.

When I cold boot the PC it tries to auto detects the hard drive, but it doesn't find it, then tries to boot from floppy or CD, nothing. Answer:Cold boot no HD, warm boot finds HD

There's a computer adage. Problems when the system is cold are related to connections. These go away when the system warms up and things expand. So for starters double check all connections concerning the hard drive and where the IDE cable attaches to the motherboard.

We have a C460 all-in-one that generates a "no operating system" error 1962 ONLY from cold starts.  If we restart or go to the BIOS, save, and start it works fine. We have tried a roll back and that does not help.  Cold starts in "SAFE" mode do start. SATA HCI (spelling?) in BIOS enabled/disabled has no effect. Any help would be appreciated! John

Answer:C460 error 1962 (no O/S) on cold start only, not on reboot or from BIOS start.

Hi radi0j0hn, welcome to the forum.

You didn't say which OS you are using, Win 7, 8.1, or 10. However, it doesn't seem to make that much difference.

This issue may occur if one or more of the following conditions are true:
The basic input/output system (BIOS) does not detect the hard disk.      The hard disk is damaged.      Sector 0 of the physical hard disk drive has an incorrect or malformed master boot record (MBR).      An incompatible partition is marked as Active.      A partition that contains the MBR is no longer active.

It could also be caused by a broken, or defective hard drive cable, which could account for the problem being spurious.

Please use our Lenovo search, at the top of this page for  "no operating system error 1962", and make sure you change the "board" level, to "Community" for the best results. It should generate other users who have experienced the same problem, on a number of various systems, and possible solutions.

This is the story. I upgraded to Win 7 from Vista on two computers and in one of them the network kept getting disconnected. So I got a new network adapter from the compatible list and tried. It kept happening. It worked fine for a while and then it just lost the network. The computer was also freezing and crashing and never shutting down, so I decided to do a clean install.
It's not freezing as much it still does, and the shutting down takes forever if it happens at all, and I keep loosing the connection to the network. Please tell me what to do, I'm going crazy!!

Answer:I get disconnected from network

Setting a static ip may help with the shutdown issue and also connectivity issue. It will for sure, help with a slightly faster boot time because it doesn't have to wait for authority from the router's dhcp server and to pull an ip address from it.

Get the latest driver for the adapter by visiting the manufacturer's website. If no 7 driver, get Vista driver.

You could also look into a firmware upgrade for your router from the manufacturer of it, which may help with your issue.

Check the forum for common advice such as how to disable IPv6 if you don't use Homegroup...etc...

If you would like further help beyond that decent advice, open a command prompt and run this command by copying and pasting, then hit enter. Post a screenshot of its findings.

I have a network with a laptop, pc and ps3 using it. Laptop is a toshiba, PC is e system (which is where the router is based). I get online and mainly go into facebook to use texas holdem, farmville etc, but comes back with a message saying im connected to network but should try disconnecting or the address may be wrong. Have scanned with no negative results. Both computers use Windows Vista and router is netgear.

Answer:Keep getting disconnected from network

Is this the only PC that disconnects - do the other devices you listed connected work OK - if so how are they connected to the router - wireless or wired

would you post the following tests when the internet is working OK, and then repeat ALL the tests when the internet disconnects.
Make sure you also indicate on the reply which tests are for what condition.

if you are connected by wireless, please include the xirrus screen shots for both conditions - see how below.

Please post back here the make and exact model of the router and if you have a separate modem, the make and exact model of the modem.

Please make a note of the status of the lights on the modem and on the router when working normally - post that light status here.
Now when the internet disconnects make a note of the status of the lights for the modem and router here again. also note which have changed.

What firewall / security suite or anti-virus do you currently have on the PC - or you have ever had on the PC in the past - any trial ware - like Norton, Mcafee , AVG , Webroot etc

I have always had problems with the internet. Any program that uses it such as Real Player or any mp3 downloader doesn't work. Also any multiplayer game that connects through the internet doesn't work. I looked in my network connections under my dial-up settings and i find that it says Compuserve is disconnected, the internet itself runs fine but every program that uses it doesn't. I get such errors as "cannot connect to server" or "please connect to internet"(even though I'm already on the internet). I've had this problem since I got this computer. I am using a Lucent Win Modem. Any help with this problem will be greatly appreciated. Thanks

Answer:Network Disconnected - Please Help!

I think that Compuserve is a proprietary network like AOL's and they restrict access to everything outside of their little world. If you want to access the rest of the world you might have to get another ISP.

Hi all,

I'm using WindXP Pro, and for reasons I can't figure out, I get disconnected from the network for no reason! I'll be working, and then I get the taskbar message that says "you are no longer connected to 'ServerName'. Click here to view status" I then can't get to the network shares, or anything like that. I still get IP packets to and from the internet (the internet connection still works), but no LAN connection!

Anyone know what might cause this? I am using the "Synchronize offline files" feature of XP (I have remapped by My Documents folder to a network share). But when I synchronize, I still can connect to the My Documents share, but not to anything else on the LAN!

So, I downloaded and installed BlueSoleil, and it was great, that is until I found out that is messed with my network icon and made it always disconnected/new network available. I thought that removing BlueSoleil would fix it, but it did not I have been through all the other things in this thread: Solution: Wrong wireless network icon displayed

None of these solutions work...So I still need help! Anybody have any idea?

Answer:Network icon is always disconnected/network available

The easiest fix for this would be to do a System Restore to before you installed BlueSoleil.

You might also want to post in one of the BlueSoleil forums.

For some time my PC was on 24/7.  I switched it off at Christmas and it took several tries to get it back on.  I assumed it was just a glitch and didn't worry about it.  I left it running 24/7 for a few months, then switched it off again.  The same problem occurred - it took several tries to get it to boot.  The exact sequence goes like this:1. Switch off at night.2. Switch on next day.  Screen is blank, no beeps, no access to BIOS.  Hard drive spins up.  CD drive is not accessed, nor is floppy drive.3. Wait a while to let PC warm up.  May get a few noises between click and beep, but nothing that matches any of the beeps in the beep table.4. Switch off and try again.  The PC may start up.  Sometimes the CD drive is accessed around now but the boot procedure doesn't get any further.5. If the PC doesn't boot, repeat steps 3 and 4 until it does. This problem is one I really need solved.  Help!!!

Question: Cold boot - Help!

I am trying to see if there is a way of cold-booting a PC without accessing the motherboard power-on pin pair.

This pair of pins is often covered (i.e. Dell use a proprietary 40-pin block across all those pins, so you can only access the pwr-on pair if you pull the 40-pin block off, but that disconnects a lot of other stuff.

Does anyone know a way of turning on a PC other than bridging the pwr-on pair on the motherboard?

Thanks

This happens when I power up the pc and it boots.

The desktop appears, and when I click normally on an icon (a desktop shortcut) to open it, it doesn't open. Instead I get the menu that I would get if I had right-clicked on the icon. If I open it from there, there are problems with tabs.

To fix this, I Restart the pc. Then everything works the way it should.

It always happens when I power up the pc. And I always have to restart it to fix it.

Any ideas on this one? Thanks!

Most of the times the Explorer crashes due a bad or corrupt Context Menu the best way to troubleshoot is to download the ShellExView is an excellent tool to view and manage all installed shell extensions. The rule is to disable non-Microsoft context menu handlers *one-by-one* and verify if the problem is solved. If disabling one does not solve the problem, undo the disabled item and disable the next non-Microsoft handler. Do the same until the problem is solved and finally identify the culprit. Scroll right to see the Company Name column in ShellExView. Run a SFC Scannow to make sure all the System files are intact.

Question: Cold Boot

I have a 8-month old pc "Touch" that just had repair, new hardrive I assume since I had to reload everything when I got it back. I have to send it to another city by courier and that is why I am not simply taking it back to them and asking them so I hope someone here has the magic answer for me.

At a cold boot it now will not load Windows XP UNTIL I unplug the keyboard. The fan just makes a lugging noise (up and down) and the 3 lights blink above the number pad on the keyboard. The second I unplug the keyboard from the round port in the back of my computer Windows XP loads. What should I do???
1. Try a new keyboard?
2. Get an adapter so I can go from round port connection n my keyboard cord to usb plug so I can plug into a usb port in the back of my computer.

Any other thoughts.

PS: I'm a newbie when it comes to this hardware/running stuff despite the fact I've been a secretary and used a computer since l975. Detailed (simple as they may seem) would be greatly appreciated. Thanks all.

Answer:Cold Boot

try a new keyboard, as weird and funny as it may sound i have actually had a mouse stop a computer from going through the POST screen and booting into windows. i found out it was the mouse causing it after i accidentally left it out during boot and the pc loaded, put a new mouse in it and it ran fine, strange but it worked. so try that first and tell us what happens.

Hi there,

We recently rearranged our bookstore and moved our register from one wall to another. After moving it and plugging it all back in (to a different wall jack) I have had issues with connecting to the internet and therefore my card reader for credit cards is not working. When I attempt to run a credit card transaction I come up with this error message, "10065 a socket operation was attempted to an unreachable host." I have no internet connection whatsoever. When I attempted to make a new connection, It recognized that the network connection was disconnected at the local area connection, VIA Rhine II Fast Ethernet Adapter. I have no clue what is disconnected or connected incorrectly.

Thanks for your help! I need this bookstore back up and in business!

We have a network drive for shared files set up on a Windows 7 desktop in our offices. I'm on a Windows XP (SP3) desktop and connect to it. We have a ubee DDW365 modem and Belkin router. We have wireless turned off and connect through cables plugged into the back of the router.

Every week or so, I get a message the the shared drive is disconnected. We have to restart the Windows 7 desktop and then the connection returns. This sometimes occurs when no one is in the office, and sometimes when I'm in the middle of working on a file. Seems quite random in timing. Oh, and my internet connection does not get lost, just the connection to the shared drive.

I'm looking for ideas on why this is happening and how we can stop it. I'm not terribly techie, so detailed help is much appreciated. Thanks!

Hello,

Recently at work, all of our PC's having been getting a "Disconnected Network Drive" notification. When you open My Computer, it shows drives that are not even mapped as disconnected, using every letter in the alphabet. Usually when you open My Computer, we have two mapped drives (H & Y). Y is mapped to the users home folder and H is mapped to all users home folders. These are mapped (I assume) though a login.bat file that is used on our network. We are running Windows Small Business Server 2003 in a domain environment. All workstations are running Windows XP SP2 and are up to date with patches, etc...

I read the following article on Microsoft's web site and was wondering if this is a good fix.
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;297684

I am trying to avoid calling our Network Advisors for this issue. Can anyone tell me if they have experienced this before and if so, how it was resolved.

Thank you in advance for any guidance that can be provided.

Every time I log into Windows XP Pro on my network, it shows that my mapped drives are disconnected. If I click on them then, they open ok, but sometimes, I will try and go into the mapped drive and it will tell me that it can't and that there is an error. I have absolute privileges and I have tried everything to remedy this. I seem to be the only one with this issue. I will be in the middle of working on a docuemnt from teh network drive and try and save and it will tell me that it can't. I have to save locally, log out of windows and then back in, and overwrite the original with my saved file. HELP!! It has been going on for a long time and I need to get this to stop. I thought that once you logged into the domain that it kept you logged in. Also, to give more info, I am on a domain with about 40 other computers, I am not going over my alloted licenses and the computer that I have as my PDC is a Windows 2000 Server and my file server is runnign Server 2003. It was added because we were running out of space on the PDC.

If these drives are on a network and the company is having a problem are you the IT department? Personally I have a problem fixing a companies computer problem especially if it is on a network. I would think that this company should have its own IT department. If we try to fix this and what ever fix we give you to try does not work and it takes down their network, boy the trouble all of us are going to be in to say nothing about the trouble you will be in. I know your boss asked you to fix this. Did you get that i n writing?

I honestly think that getting a local company with the proper tech training will be the best thing for your boss to do.

Something rather strange has been happening recently on our Windows 2000 AD network. Certain people are calling up our help desk and complaining that their network drives (ran by a batch script at log on) are displaying as "disconnected" in Windows Explorer (see attached image). However, if they double-click to open this drive, it opens with out error. Clearly, the drive is not disconnected or unavailable by any means.

Is there a way to get rid of this "disconnected" status so that I am not bombarded with these false alarm calls?

Thanks in advance...Wayne

I have 3 drives mapped on a WinXP Media Center Edition machine, which always show up as Disconnected Network Drive with every boot. I can access them if i double click them, and then they are marked as connected.

This is a problem, however, because when i load up Media Center, I have these 3 drives mapped under My Video, and they won't display. What I am doing now, is remoting into the system every time I boot it, opening each mapped drive, and then launching Media Center. But, this is a pain in the ***, because I jsut want to boot up and go with the remote control.

Does anyone have any advice?

Good day dear All!

I am facing a big problem with windows 7 & a program which we are using in the company i am working on. As it seems, in windows 7, by default, after 15 minutes, a network drive becomes idle (a red X appears) & the only way to activate the
drive again is to double click & open it.
Recently, we have installed a program, which creates a network drive in order to store all the files which are attached inside that program (creates copies of the files inside the network drive). In case we need to perform some action to the program
(for example to attach a file to the program which supposed to copy that file inside the network drive), we receive an error that the drive is disconnected & we have to go to the drive, double click to activate it & then again to perform the action
through the program.

Is there a way, a fix, a small *.exe file, which we could download & run in our computers/servers in order for the network drives never to become disconnected?

Thank you in advance for your time!

Best Regards

Sory to be so long-winded......A friend has a laptop which is connected wirelessly via a Buffalo Airstation router to a Telewest broadband modem. This works flawlessly. Not so the desktop, which has an onboard NIC and is wired to the router via a Cat 5 cable. When the desktop tries to connect to the intenet, "Page cannot be found", and delving deeper into the Telewest diagnostics we get "Local Area Network cable is disconnected" (or words to that effect). I have swapped cables to one that I know works, to no avail. Time (the pC manufacturer) is saying that a system reload, from their restore CD, will sort this out. They are also telling me that the IPS should sort this out and that the error message is nothing to do with the pc hardware. Buffalo are saying that the router is OK (and I don't disagree). The PC went back to Time for a replacement DVD drive and was connecting via the same network prior to the repair, but whether this has any bearing on the matter... Device Manager shows the Network adaptor as a 1394 # 11 LAN adaptor, Buffalo says that this is Firewire not an NIC, but I think he is wrong, because my own pc show my NIC as a 1394 device, so maybe that's a red herring.Any thought and suggestions would be appreciated, becasue the men in white coats will be coming soon if I don't sort this out.Mike

I have a problem with WinXP connection to a Win2003 Server Shares. I am not sure as to why I get this. I am still able to access the shares. But what I see is just "Disconnected Network Drive." This shows up on all the computers in the network. I have sifted through tech articles everywhere and I haven't found a fix. I am not sure if it is on the server end of the client end. I thought I would hit the forums before I made a $250 phone call the MS. I've attached a picture of what I am seeing in My Computer. Also I have included a command buffer of the errors I get.

------------------
C:\>net use o: /d
The network connection could not be found.

More help is available by typing NET HELPMSG 2250.

C:\>net use o: \\machine\Share
System error 85 has occurred.

The local device name is already in use.

---------------
Any ideas?

I cleaned up a nasty Vitrumonde infection (I think!) but as a result of the malware or my efforts at cleanup my browsers (IE, Foxfire and Seamonkey) and Eudora are disconnected from my wireless router (D-Link) and I can't get them to reconnect. Oddly my computer IS connected to the router and , for example, uTorrent loads and continues to download torrents.
My computer is an old Sony viao running XP. I have no disks for the browsers and mail server or OS (Sony only restores to a very early version of windows XP and erases everything else). Is there a way of turning the connection back on? Using tools in IE didn't work and if it is registry problem I don't know how to fix it. Thank you

Did you do this on your own? How long ago did this occur? I would seek help with this in the malware removal forum to make sure you got Virtumonde completely removed. If there are remnants, that could be causing your problems. Once you're sure your system is clean we can focus on your Internet connection issues. Just a suggestion.

Peace...

I have an Epson XP-850 printer which used to show 2 network drives in Explorer: USB storage (I think this is where it stores printing jobs) with drive letter Y, and the card reader with drive letter Z. The card reader is now missing entirely, and drive Y has a red cross in front of it. How can I restore these drives to functionality?

This may or may not be relevant, but I have noticed that the registry key HKLM/SYSTEM/MountedDevices lists no fewer than 8 drive entries beginning /??/. Would it be safe to delete these entries? Underneath all drives, excepting the network drives I have mentioned, are correctly listed beginning \DosDevices\.

I am running an up to date Windows 10 64-bit machine with 12GB of RAM.

Hey Guys, I met a problem here. My brand new SL 400 laptop frequently disconnected with my wireless network. It always screwed my up cuz everytime when I was seeing the websites... It showed cannot open the website... I do not know why? Is it something wrong with my wireless router? Or it is the physical defect in SL series laptops? Are there any ways to solve that? Really appreciate if someone would help me. Ben

Answer:HELP! SL 400 frequently disconnected with wireless network

Make sure you have set the Access Connections NOT to disconnect when WLAN is inactive. (Launch Access Connections -> Tools tab -> Global settings button -> "Allow the wireless LAN to be turned off..." uncheck) If that doesn't help, your router may be wrong set.

I have this one computer that keeps losing one of it's network drives. The user leaves the computer turned on and locked at night, and when she logs back on in the morning, the drive is gone and she has to re-connect it. I asked her to check to make sure the check mark was there to reconnect at logon. The drive doesn't have a red X under, which she would simply have to click on the drive and it would be reconnected. I have search Microsoft but am coming up blank ? Anyone have any ideas ?

I have a small (wireless) network in my home. I have mapped a network drive on my husband's computer back to a data file on my computer so we can share a specific program, but every time he restarts his computer the drive is disconnected, so he gets an error when he goes to use the program. To work around this, he simply has to go to My Computer and double-click on the disconned drive and go back, and it reconnects. I've heard this is a known XP problem; is this true? Do you know of a fix?

Answer:Disconnected Mapped Network Drive

i have found adding the drive to my network places works a lot better then mapping a network drive. no idea why, but i have changed my home network to have all drives i want continously mapped connected via network places - also this has the beniefit of nolonger prompting the connection at login.
BUT I am NOT a network expert - so you may want to wait for more advice

Hello--

I'm very new to Vista, so please, bear with me..

I have a wamp server setup (Windows, Apache, MySQL, PHP) on my Vista Home Premium edition (build 6001).

I've added an entry in my hosts file to point a domain name (eg. localdomain.com) to 127.0.0.1.

When I visit localdomain.com from a web browser (doesn't matter which) while connected to some network (whether it be wired, wireless, or my AT&T mobile data card network, the site loads perfectly fine, receiving it's data from the apache server. However, as soon as I disconnect from all networks, I can no longer access this localhost domain.

I know that I had this working correctly on my XP machine that I used before this one.. and I thought that it worked correctly in the beginning with vista... But I can't figure out for the life of me what is happening now.

If i go to ping the domain, i get back that ping could not find the host. However if i ping localhost, it returns the reply coming from ::1: in less than 1 ms.

Any ideas?? I'm lost and don't know.

Thanks in advance!!

Matt
