Windows Media Player suddenly not full screen + WIFI suddenly ON?

Question: Windows Media Player suddenly not full screen + WIFI suddenly ON?

I usually like to leave my computer on overnight. So I go offline, disable my wireless, and put on a video playlist in full screen to help me sleep. Anyway, today I woke up and saw the Windows Media Player no longer full screen, and the wireless switch was actually turned on. This is strange because I know I turned wireless off and I frequently check my system with Malwarebytes.

What could this be? Did someone snoop in my computer? Thanks in advance for the support.

Preferred Solution: Windows Media Player suddenly not full screen + WIFI suddenly ON?

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

This problem just started 1 day ago.
I noticed my computer was going really slow. All that was running was my songs, via windows media player 11 (from hereafter, abbreviated as 'wmp11'). I saw that switching siongs, pausing them was taking a lot of time, so i restarted my pc, started wmp11 again, started playing songs. and i also opened task manager to see how much space wmp11 took.
After about 5-10 minutes of playing, windows media player 11 gets really slow and songs will start to skip... cpu usage jumps to 95%+. This never used to happen ever before! I have a Core 2 Due, 2.4 GHz with 2gb of RAM, nvidia 8500 GT.

I've scanned for spyware and viruses, and have found nothing.
Please give me a true solution, and not suggestions to use other programs. None are better than wmp11 at managing files in library, etc.

Anyone experienced a similar problem and found a solution, or anyone know what might be causing this? Thanks for any help!
Please reply as soon as possible.

Answer:Windows Media Player 11 suddenly slow

By the way, I have Windows XP. And there hasnt been any problem in their relationship until yesterday. I used to play songs on wmp11 for hours at a stretch without any problems. Has there been a build up in some sort of wmp11 cache or something like that?

Hello.
I tried to play the movie Ocean's Twelve using Windows Media Player 11 (WMP 11). I had already just watched some portion of it in the morning, and was looking forward to watching it again. Its a .avi file. In the morning, the movie was showing perfectly, just as usual. Right now, however, the video is blurry in areas where people are moving, and NOTHING I've tried can fix it. I played the same file in Realplayer, and it was blurred again. When I played it using VLC Media Player and DivX player, however, the movie showed perfectly, with no blurriness, just like in the morning. But it was still blurred in WMP 11. I tried other movies (all .avi files) in WMP 11 too. Some of them worked normally, with no blurriness, totally clear, but others were blurred too. All the blurred movies in WMP 11 were blurred in Realplayer too, but not in VLC and DivX.
I looked it up online, but there's nothing useful. I'm downloading my graphic card's latest driver, but I'm not completely sure that will fix this.
Earlier in the day, after the afternoon (when WMP 11 was working perfectly), but before this point, a file called "wudfhost.exe" was removed by Norton Antivirus as it was performing suspicious activity. I put a new version of the file from another computer, and this one was safe. Is this related?
Please reply as fast as possible, please, I really like my Windows Media Player, and completely prefer it over all the other ones, so PLEASE help me.

Can someone help.....PLEASE. I see a lot of issues for Windows Media Player but not any solutions that have worked for me. I have Windows Media Player 11 on Vista 64 Home Premium and everything was working just fine until all of a sudden I click on WMP and it does not respond which then caused problems with even shutting down the computer. I have rebooted I have tried scandisk and I have tried re-register of files such as regsvr32 wmp.dll and so forth and still no luck. I have also done a system restore to various times when I thought things were working just fine and still no luck.

What is the solution to get Windows Media Player working???????????????????

Answer:Windows Media Player suddenly NOT RESPONDING

Try to start the wmplayer.exe from C > Program files > Windows Media Player. If that does not work, replace the whole Windows Media Player folder - copy one from another system > take ownership of yours > rename it Windows Media Player (2) > drag the the new one into the Program files.
But you could also try sfc /scannow in elevated cmd. Maybe it can fix it.

Hi guys! Big fan of the site.

Specs: Windows 7 Home Premium, service pack 1, 64-bit
Window Media Player product version 12.0.7601.18150

This may be a larger issue involving a virus and not WMP itself (I'm not sure), so let me just start with what's been going on.

I started having issues trying to burn a music cd after I updated Windows (which I rarely do), so I ran Malwarebytes and Avast scans (both free versions) which detected and deleted a few things. On reboot, the desktop could not be found. I restarted again and everything seemed to go back to normal. Rescanned and rebooted some more. All looked fine.

Except when I started WMP it made me reconfigure settings, and stopped playing video files correctly. The audio will play (eventually) but no image. I tested with videos I've had and played many times before. I tried reinstalling codecs and it made no difference. It was still playing music files just fine. Now today it seems to have gotten progressively worse. It will no longer play certain music from a file, either, and in fact often stops responding to any command (spinning wheel of death). I did try turning WMP functionality off and then back on via the Features settings, which made absolutely no difference.

Occasionally I have gotten error messages on startup, citing problems with atiumdva.dll, atiadlxy.dll, and javaw.exe however they don’t appear every time.

Hello,

Lately, Windows Media Player refuses to play asx url's (usually web radio streams). I suspect, though I'm not sure, that this started with the XP update to SP3 (which has provoked other troublesome hitches in my system).

The symptoms are the following:

Media Player starts all right, there is some activity as it tries to "connect to the media", then this activity stops and a dialog box appears, the gist of which is: "Cannot open. Please verify that the path and file name are correct and try again."
(The file name and path are correct of course, they worked perfectly well in the past.)
Upon clicking on "Advanced" these errors show up in various forms.
C00D002B
C00D151D
800C000D

I have looked up the file associations (which seem allright, so far I can see: asf and asx extensions are associated with Win MP. I have tried to associate the extension to another player (QuickTime or WinAmp). Despite this, Win MP keeps coming up when trying to connect an asx url (in other words, the association is not respected even after a system restart).

I also checked to see whether there was some conflict somewhere (for example two players associated with the same extension - practically impossible, but one never knows).

Please note that other file associations linked to Win MP (org etc.) work without a hitch. It is just that asx association that gives me trouble (more especially the url: http://classicalwebcast.com/opera.asx).

Gee, my POWER DVD player is suddenly playing all my media and I just want it for DVDs. I prefer Windows Media player but can no longer set to default. I have no idea how it got changed or why I cannot access windows media player any more. Any others know what is up or what could have happened? Simply does not allow a change in the default. A couple weeks ago for some reason my browser automatically updated to IE 11...could this be related? I have Windows 8 and my homepage is MY MSN.com  This is a GATEWAY laptop and this morning some of the ACER settings were also changed for some reason by MSN.
I don't like my DVD player for media.

Answer:suddenly CANNOT DEFAULT TO WINDOWS MEDIA PLAYER

Right-click on one of the files you want to play in Media Player, point at Open with> and click on the option you want.  If you click on Choose default program..., you'll get another window where you can select the desired program AND click the box that says Always use this in the future.

Good luck.

I'd like to know why windows media player won't play my media files after a reboot. Didn't change codecs. Didn't delete anything.

I did try to restore cos I suddenly couldn't go online but the restore said that it didn't work so I assume nothing was changed

Same exact file, same folder, now won't play.

Oh, and Chrome now won't open. Makes the little "timer" spinny icon thing, then that stops, program isn't open. I know that's a different problem but it started at the same time

Thanks for any help

It's extremely frustrating to switch to what you think will be a new and improved os and have these things happen

It is even affecting some of my games such as Oblivion, it's music files are .mp3 and wont play. I hope there is a solution which does not require reinstalling win xp, as i do not have a disc. (When i bought my pc it came pre-installed with no installer disc)

My dxdiag is too big to post.. Sorry about it, but will try again on request.

This problem has popped up recently. Windows Media Player sudenly does not play the same internet radio stations I have listened to before that use Media Player and it always did before quickly and automatically. Now the media opens, shows connecting and then Ready. Nothing happens and when I click Play it just repeats the process and still nothing happens. Other stations that use flash player or something else play just fine fine. All sounds and videos work well.

Recently Internet Explorer 8 did a large update and so did Itunes. Windows Media player worked fine when I tested it to play songs from the library. I checked some settings in WMP and they seemed ok to me.

I could not find a solution to this when I searched the forums regarding this.
I run Vista Home Premium and Windows updates are up to date.
Thanks for any suggestions.

hello,
my computer has been saying that it has been low on ram for a while, but i would ignore it as i have just finished download call of duty modern warfare 2 (a large game) and have been wanting to play it. Suddenly, my sound ceased to work and windows media player wont play files, instead putting a red x next to them as if they cant find them. When my headphones are plugged in the jack it wont work, but when i take the sound jack out my computers speakers (which are coming from the monitor) make very strange noises. I have a windows vista 32 bit and i would appreciate some help. Thank you.

Answer:[SOLVED] Sound suddenly stopped working and windows media player wont recognise files

Windows requires considerable memory to run media player.
If it is out of memory it wont even start.

Try to disable some things and see if it will work.

Hi, I listen to internet radio and watch internet tv (streamed) through Media Player. A few weeks ago I could suddenly not listen to radio anymore, fortunately the site lets me choose between different players so I can still listen through Quicktime. Yesterday afternoon I watched a television show without problems but when I tried it yesterday evening all of a sudden it didn't work anymore. Unfortunately this site (nor all the other ones) does not give me the option to choose another player. I tried it again this morning but it still didn't work. I've tried it on another pc and it worked just fine.

What has happened to my pc and how can I solve it...?

Any comment is appreciated!

Answer:Media Player suddenly stopped working

Have you tried System Restore and restoring the PC back to a date when it did work? If not, give that a try first. System Restore can be accessed from Start/Programs/Accessories/System Tools.

Out of nowhere, my Win7 x64 Home Professional has stopped playing .mpg files and certain website audio. The response is always "Server Execution Failed"for video files, or "Server Execution Failed C:\Users\JLS\AppData\Local\Temp\playlist.asx" for online streaming audio.

My experience level on this sort of thing is minimal, but I have tried removing media services (media player), rebooting, and re-installing with no success. FYI I just switched from Kaspersky to Avast, which I'm assuming should have nothing to do with my problem.

Could someone please assist?

I recently reformatted my os because of a virus. Now DVD's won't fill up the screen when I go into the full screen mode. There is a bar at the top and bottom of the screen. It also does it when streaming video from the internet in full screen mode.

Answer:Windows media player 11 not full screen

Go to Start/run and type devmgmt.msc and press enter. In the Device Manager, all devices with a yellow mark need to have drivers installed. If your Display adapter has a yellow mark, then go to your computer manufactures Support/Download Drivers site type in your make and model # and download the drivers you need. Then try either increasing or decreasing the Resolution to see if that helps.
If that fails, try VLC player.

Microsoft would prefer you to use Films & TV which does open consistently at the same size it had when you last closed it, filling the screen if that's how you left it. WMP doesn't get much development these days and is less convenient to use. You can however get WMP to open with a larger window that, for all but the smallest of videos, will fill the screen.

Open WMP (just WMP, you don't need to play a video). On View > Video size select 'Fit Video to Player on resize', 'Fit Player to video' and '200%' scaling then close WMP. If you are playing a video you can get the same menu by right-clicking anywhere on the video. When you next open a video in File Explorer WMP will open at 200% scaling or, if that's too large to fit your screen, scale the window to fit your screen.

Or just get into the habit of double-clicking on the title bar to maximize, or anywhere on the video to go full-screen.

I just installed Win 8 Pro. Despite me checking the "fit video to player", it stills start full screen whenever I open WMP. In Win 7, it remembers the size, in WMP, music/videos open with WMP all go to full screen, which is annoying as I resize it back to the smallest. I do not use the metro app as that opens the app in full and prevents me from doing work. Any ideas?

Suddenly my Windows Media Player (version 10) won't go entirely to full screen. When I use either the oblique arrow or the dropdown window to expand the screen to full screen, it enlarges, but the top and bottom frames/bars don't recede as they used to do. Is there a fix for this? Has anyone else experienced this? I tried moving the cursor to various spots of the screen, to no avail, and I have searched Google for an answer. But so far nothing.

I am hoping someone might have a fix for this. I have other media viewers, so it isn't a critical issue, but I'd like to have my WMP in correct operating condition.

Is it a big deal to reinstall Windows Media Player. If I were to do this, should I uninstall the player before reinstalling?

Answer:Windows Media Player auto full-screen if I open?

Hi there and welcome to Eight Forums!

The sollution to your problem is very easy. Click and hold the upper blue bar and drag the entire window a little bit down and to the left. Now you can hover over the rightabove corner of the screen. There will appear an arrow in a 45degree angle. Click and hold an drag to the lower left to change the size of the window to whatever size you want it to be.

Now close Media Player and restart it. You will see that it's the same, smaller, size that is was when closing.

Good luck with it!

The hotkeys did not work either. For instance the space bar usually acts as a play/pause button but now it doesnt do anything. THe only possible way to stop the movie from playing once it is in full screen is either by Alt+F4 or by starting the task manager. I have tried it with otherr files (.mkv) and it still does the same thing

I don't really now how to fix it (I have tried rebooting my PC several times!! ) so please tell me if you know!

I've done restoring OS but it didn't help.

Could you help me please?

Answer:Full screen is black when using windows media player on Equium series

Hi there,

I know that problem, it?s just a bug with the media player and the graphics drivers (It?s mainly the media player causing the error). Please, if you want to watch something on the TV then the playback must be STOPPED BEFORE you switch the screen. After you switched the screen, activate the playback and it should work.

Otherwise go to the site of www.videolan.org, download the latest version of the VLC player and do it with him, it should work for sure. I never start the playback of some movie or whatever when the screen was not changed before to the TV as the only screen.

Hi, I am an experienced computer user, and have been using a new (January)  W530 with a 450GB hard drive and factory-installed Win 8. I cannot find any evidence of a virus. In the past day, my hard drive is suddenly full and I am unable to detect where the memory is being used, despite a root directory, folder-by-folder (including hidden and system folders) review of memory consumption. I am using the new "File History" option and saving to a network drive, but have deleted all of these files (it was too aggressive at saving some large files). Suggestions welcome!! Thanks, Gary

Solved!

Go to Solution.

Answer:W530 and Windows 8 - suddenly full hard drive

Solution found! After some investigation, I have discovered the problem. Though I had attributed the problem to "File History", in fact it was Windows indexing that was the problem. I have about 200,000 items indexed but the indexing file "windows.edb" wa a massive 280GB and growing. (the file is found in Program Data/Microsoft/Search/Data/Application/Windows.). Interestingly, the Program Data directory file size read totally inaccurately as being ~17GB (I do not recall the exact number). I did have to stp indexing, change parameters, ask it to reindex and kill the service to actually fix the problem. The windows.edb file is currently about 17MB for about 60,000 items.

Hello all,

I have been experiencing slow wifi signal since about 4 days.
This happens on my desktop computer, Chrome Cast with my tv and also my mobile phone. So I know its not a computer problem.

If I bring my mobile phone next to my modem, I get full signal.
There is no way to get my modem closer to my desktop and tv though.

My signal used to be great for more years that I can remember. I'ts only been like this for about 4 days.

If I plug the wire to my computer, I get full speed.

Could this mean my modem is broken?

Initially windows 10 was running fine until suddenly (I'm using Chrome) errors such as "DNS_PROBE_FINISHED_NO_INTERNET" started occurring, while periodically the wifi kept disconnecting . After searching for and following some solutions this issue was fixed however now the internet is very slow. Admittedly I'm not technically adept at all however I believe something I changed may have made the wifi slow. I did the following things:
- Cleared chrome's cache
- Changed the DNS to google's 8.8.8.8 and 8.8.4.4 (which I am currently using) from the default (IPv4)
- Tried to update network adapter drivers (said there were no new versions when using the 'automatic search')
- Used cmd to run commands such as "ipconfig /flushdns"
- Tried performing a clean boot
- Also followed these instructions (http*://wind8apps.com/fix-error-code-dns_probe_finished_no_internet-windows-8-windows-10/ without the * )
- And maybe some other things that I can't remember
If this problem can't be resolved I'll just have to go back to windows 8.1, the internet is unbearably slow and I can't use ethernet instead of wifi.
Any help is appreciated, thank you.

Hello, I know some people have had problems with wifi in windows 10 and there are solutions all over the internet, but my case is a little bit different and I haven't been able to find a solution: I Upgraded my notebook (Lenovo T410) from Win7 to Win10 in october, 2015. So far, I haven't had any problems related with internet connection, but 3 days ago wifi stopped working. 1. In the taskbar, in the far right (I think it's called "tray"), the wifi symbol appears greyed out with a white X in a red circle. If I click on it, no wifi networks appear. Both flight mode and wifi are disconnected. 2. If I open Configuration->Internet->Wifi, wifi connection appears "disabled" in a "side-to-side" switch. If I click on it to enable the wifi, the switch goes back again to "disabled"!! 3. If I go to Windows key+R (Run)-> Write "ncpa.cpl"->Accept, I can see that the wifi network adapter is not connected. When I right-click it and click "connect", the configuration->Internet panel appears (so I'm basically back to point number 2) Extra information: The computer does not have a mechanical switch for wifi. Drivers for the network adapter is up-to-date. In the "device manager" everything seems alright (no alert signs). I would be really glad if you could help me with this issue! Thanks a lot

I've just got a new laptop, using vista, and whenever i play a video in full screen mode (In quicktime or window media player) there are black bars down the left and right sides of the screen, and i cannot for the life of me figure out why this is happening and how to turn them off.

Can anyone help?

Answer:Full screen media player issue

Your laptop is most likely a widescreen, like a 16:10 ratio. The video, on the other hand, is probably a 4:3 aspect ratio. Unfortunately, WMP doesn't allow you to choose which aspect ratio it uses for video... I don't know about quicktime because I don't have pro and it won't let basic users even get full screen. Vista's media center, however, will allow you to choose aspect ratio - if that helps. You just right click on the screen and go to "zoom". Setting 3 usually gives the best image for stretching 4:3 to fit a 16:10 screen.

Answer:Media player wont go full screen or....

Make sure your screen saver isn't kicking you out of full-screen mode.

Also, turning of the Enable full-screen mode switch feature might solve the problem. In Windows Media Player 9 Series or later, do the following:
On the Tools menu, click Options, and then click the Performance tab.
Click Advanced.
Clear the Enable full-screen mode switch check box.

Hiya

Which version of Windows Media Player are you using? If its version 10, or even 9, take a look at this:

Windows Media Player can only play in full-screen mode on the primary monitor. For more information about changing your primary monitor, see Windows Help.

I know this a problem that has been discussed before, but I don't seem to have solved the issue using the advice provided.

Basically, the little VIEW FULL SCREEN icon [arrow in a box] underneath the screen refuses to be active, and thus I cannot click on it to make the video image fill up the entire laptop screen, ie the controls disappear from sight unless I so desire.

Nor can I simply ALT + ENTER to achieve the same end.

I should note that this is a newfound problem which seems to have materialised shortly after I switched REGIONS on MEDIA PLAYER.

Any tips would be much appreciated as I do miss watching DVDs that fill the entire laptop screen.

The C-Drive on my IdeaPad Y570 is suddenly (almost) full.  My model came with:814 GB HD (750GB SATA 7200RPM + 64GB SSD) Local Disc (C) 22.5 GB free of 714 GBLenovo (D) 26.1 GB free of 29.2 GB I ran through the disc clean up utilities, but that only cleared out about 2GB space. I am not even sure when the C-Drive got so suddenly full, or why.  When I open the drive and look at what's listed in the drive, and look at properties of the folders that are in the drive, nothing comes up as a big chuck of used drive space. Possibly related issues:  I've had this laptop for only about 2 months.  About 5 days ago, something happened that I cannot explain or even describe well, but somehow the OS got screwed up and I decided to restore the computer back to its factory settings using the one-button restore utility.  After doing that, it seemed to be fine, but just this morning I noticed that the C-Drive is nearly full.  Not sure when that happened, or why. Also, I notice that if I look at the Disk Management utility under Computer Management, it shows a Drive 0 (C and D drive), but also a Drive 1 that it says is not initialized. I am totally unsure about the 64GB SSD that's in this computer -- where it it, how it works, etc.  Is this the uninitialized "Drive 1"?  Isn't this computer supposed to boot from that drive?

But suddenly it's red-lining. Capacity is just about 'maxed out'. It should be empty apart from the Win7exe stuff & associated Program folders i.e. just the win7 engine components live in there (c-drive).

Hey everybody, new user with my first post here. :)

I've got a problem--I'm currently running 64-bit Windows 7 Home Premium. I received a notification that my hard drive was low on space. I said to myself, "this can't be right, I should have about 370GB open." Sure enough, I opened up My Computer, and my C: drive was showing only about 700kb free. I ran WinDirStat and saw that two folders were taking up most of the space on my hard drive, both with gibberish names along the lines of 'Slp1!gLbkn95d or something like that.

I immediately deleted the folders, but I'm not sure of the cause, and would like to make sure it doesn't happen again. I deleted them about a half hour ago, and my HDD hasn't filled up again, but I've been trying to research prevention methods and have yet to reboot the machine. Anyway, I've run dds--here's the log:

A customer's XPP machine suddenly won't boot, either regularly, Last Good or Safe mode.

I took out the drive and installed it as a passenger in another machine. I ran a virus check which came up clean but Tree Size revealed that there's only 18mb free space left on this 20gb drive. This is curious as the elderly customer only does a bit of bookwork and some emailing, and the last time I looked his usage wouldn't have been over 5 or 6gb total.

A closer look at Tree Size reveals that the usage breaks down to 2gb in bits and pieces, 1gb in program files, 3gb in Windows, and the rest, 13.6gb is in the System Volume Information folder.

This seems real strange and I'm wondering if a bug is responsible.

Does anyone know what might have occurred here? Or how it can be fixed? I guess I could try and empty the System Volume Information folder but I don't know if this would be wise.

Hi.

Quick description of the problem is that my hard drive is suddenly showing up as full. I have 1TB of space. I don't know exactly how much I've used, but the last time I looked it was around 300 GB or so. I have done no major installs since then. I do not download movies and have minimal music. The only thing I do that takes up a lot of space is photography, but I checked any my photos folder is 180GB.

Is there a program that i can run that will tell me where all the space is being used and by what program???

note: I do use geniesoft and in my searches on this topic it seems to possibly be related. Any ideas how I check to see if it's duplicated my hard drive in some giant temporary file somewhere??

thanks!

My Local Disc C is at 90% full all of a sudden: I only have about 9GB free from a total of about 200GB. I have two other discs - D for random things like movies, music, pictures etc. and E for games and programs, both were given 400GB and are almost free as I don't store much on my computer. I install nor store anything on C other than what Windows puts there so my disc was at 20GB usage at most before this happened.
I looked through the properties of all my folders in C and they are nowhere near this amount of data so where is this coming from and what can I do?

Additional info:
1. I tried to install a pirated copy of Adobe Illustrator 6 days ago (re-installed many times, couldn't crack so eventually I gave up and removed the whole thing - I only needed it to view a single file anyways), I think this happened after that but am not sure as I only noticed it yesterday - could that have bugged my system somehow?
2. I tried restoring my system to a previous state but it keeps failing to do so.
3. I run a Windows 7 Ultimate

Any help would be greatly appreciated...

When I look at the files and programs that are installed on this disk I see nothing that takes up a lot of space.

I hope this is something that can be fixed...

I've had this problem many times before...as of yesterday or so, I had over a gig free on my C drive, and just now I got a low disk space warning, with only 170 mb left. How is this possible? I did just upgrade to Service Pack 2, but I don't think that's it, cuz this has happened before. It's as if almost a gig of stuff was dumped on my drive. Are there any folders I can go through to search for temp files that may have been just added. And I just did a spyware check, there was only a couple to delete, so I don't think it's that either.

Hello! I recently purchased the Dell Inspiron 15R directly from Dell in December 2013. I upgraded from 8 to 8.1, and installed some of the main programs I used on my old laptop (Chrome, iTunes, Office 2010, Dropbox, Google Drive). I don't understand technology well so bear with me please.
Today, I installed Microsoft Office 2010, the 64 bit version. It has worked fine, and I wonder if it is related to the 2 new drivers in the "My PC" folder. One is titled "Local Disk (W:)", and has 29.8 MB free of 349 MB, and the other is titled "PBR Image (X:)", and has 727 MB free of 12.2 GB.

All I transferred from my old computers were strictly the documents, photos, music, and videos via USB. I installed the programs again from the website or disc and did not transfer their folders or applications from my old computer. So I have no idea where these came from, or why they are already full.
Both of these new drives are full, so I attempted myself to check for system errors, and while the PBR Image was fine, I received this error window from the Local Disk:
I would like to know:
1. Where they came from and their purpose.
2. How I can free their space up.
3. How to fix the errors on the drive.

Thank you very much for helping this lost user!

Hello all,Computer: HP 8765COS:  Windows MEI have a 42 GB hard drive that was approximately half full.  A few days ago, I suddenly lost the remaining 20 GB of drive space.  I ran Virus Scan and a few trojans popped up and were cleaned and deleted or quarantined.  But I don't think these were the cause of such a drastic loss of memory.  Around the same time this problem began, I installed the updated version of McAfee's Personal Firewall product. . . not sure if that has anything to do with it either.Anyway, after uninstalling of the Firewall product and removing some older programs, I cleared 2 GB of drive space only to have that disappear after a day or two.  I deleted more old software. . . 2 GB free again and it seems to be slowly disappearing, too.  I can not do a system restore because all my restore points have magically disappeared after a failed attempt to restore with insufficient hard drive space (!?).  I've done a disk cleanup, defrag, tried to find some enormous files/folders on the disk -- but nothing looks out of the ordinary.  I know there's 20 GB free on that disk. . . and there's only so much software I can delete.  Any ideas on what is going on here -- all suggestions are welcome. Thanks so much!

Hey Tech Support Forums,

Recently found out that my C Drive is very, very full. Got a few messages telling me that the drive needs more space to be efficient.

On a 108 GB hard drive, 107 GB are currently being used, with 751 MB left free.

No idea what programs/files could be taking up that space.

Have not deleted anything, simply because I am pretty lost when it comes to this type of stuff.

Running Windows XP with Service Pack 3. Everything runs fine, its just pretty slow, and I'm sure getting rid of whatever is taking up all this space will make it run smoother.

Any advice identifying what is taking up the space, and then getting rid of it would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks!!

Get your self a external USB HDD. Move your Pictures, Music, Movies and important files from the C: drive to the new external drive (usually located in the My Documents folder). Make sure they are no longer on the C: drive. Download CCleaner, delete temp files run Registry cleaner too. Defrag computer. Right click the C: drive in My Computer/Properties and see how much space you have gained.

Hello!

During the last day, the primary drive on my HDD has gone from practically empty, to being practically full, with only 2Gb left of space that continuously varies between 2.6 and 2.2 when I refresh the page. After having assured myself that no one installed anything during my absence, I ran a full Microsoft SE scan, which returned nothing. My definitions were up to date at the moment of the scan

I am seriously starting to believe that the drive might be infected with something, but I have no idea how to resolve the issues.

If someone could offer some help, I would really appreciate it.

Included is the dxdiag scan of my system. If you need anything else, let me know.

Hello, We will be helping you with your problems. Please be patient while we assist you. Some points for you to keep in mind while we are helping you to make things go easier and faster for both of us:  Please do NOT run, install or uninstall any programs,  unless instructed to do so.
We ask you to run different tools in a specific order to ensure the malware is completely removed from your machine, and running any additional tools may detect false positives, interfere with our tools, or cause unforeseen damage or system instability. Please do not attach logs or use code boxes, just copy and paste the text.
Due to the high volume of logs we receive it helps to receive everything in the same format, and code boxes make the logs very difficult to read. Also, attachments require us to download and open the reports when it is easier to just read the reports in your post. Please read every post completely before doing anything.

Hello, and thank you for reading this.

As of just today, for some weird reason, my computer has just started to hiccup and freeze out of nowhere, and it's more prominent with any program that uses the internet (i.e. Firefox, Steam, etc), but it freezes up the entire computer along with the program.

This is especially aggravating as just yesterday, my computer was working absolutely fine with no hitches or sudden slow downs, but by today, it just starts to act this way, despite me doing anything to the computer at the time.  I have also ran a complete virus scan twice to no avail, and I tried using System Restore, only for it to fail.

I'm currently running under Windows Vista Home Premium x64. I've attached a HijackThis Log, if anyone can read that.
 HijackThis Log.txt   13.05KB
  2 downloads

I would hope that this doesn't turn out to be a hardware issue, so if this is something of a software issue, I would hope I could fix this, as I really need my computer as it has important school files and such.

Answer:Computer suddenly slows down suddenly and sporadically for minutes

Hi Twistervtx and welcome to BC.Sorry for the delay in response to your thread.HijackThis doesn't enumerate 64bit systems very well, but i can see some problems in the report.P2P Warning Please note that as long as you're using any form of Peer-to-Peer networking ( Frostwire, Ares, uTorrent etc.) and downloading files from non-documented sources, you can expect infestations of malware to occur.Once upon a time, P2P file sharing was fairly safe. That is no longer true.P2P programmes form a direct conduit onto your computer, their security measures are easily circumvented, and Malware writers are increasingly exploiting them to spread their wares onto your computer. Further to that, if your P2P programme is not configured correctly you may be sharing more files than you realise. There have been cases where people's Passwords, Address Books and other personal, private, and financial details have been exposed to the file sharing network by a badly configured programme. Many of the programmes come bundled with other unwanted programmes, but even the ones free of any bundled software are not safe to use. When you use them you are downloading software from an unknown source directly onto your computer, bypassing your Firewall and Anti-Virus software. Hardly surprising then that many of these Downloads are being targeted to carry infections.Having a P2P program running at startup is even more dangerous! You may decide to continue P2P sharing, but keep in mind that this practice may be t... I clicked on something at the top of the gmail inbox that said social, and indicated that it allowed me to receive messages from social networks. Didn't want it, or the other damn thing beside so clicked on them and suddenly my inbox doubled in size with pages of ads. Hours later inspite of my best efforts it is still like that. I have had that account for years, it has important messages. How can I return my inbox back to legit messages? Failing that how can I download 'sent folder" to my machine. google seems to have gotten worse than facebook about tricking you into giving up info and getting ads.
Very sleazy.

Answer:Gmail inbox suddenly full of pages of ads

Hi

Didn't want it, or the other damn thing beside so clicked on themClick to expand...

First, I would recommend that if you don't want something, the worst thing you can do is click on it.

All those tabs do is auto categorize your existing emails into different categories and boxes. It doesn't add emails or ads into your inbox. Here's an explanation of what they are: https://support.google.com/mail/answer/3055016?hl=en

When you clicked on Social it brought you to all the messages in your inbox that were categorized as social. If you click on Primary, it should bring you back to what you are used to.

If you don't want them, you should click on the gear icon on the top right of your gmail screen. In the dropdown box you will see 'Configure Email'. Click on that. Uncheck everything but 'Primary' and click Save. That should get rid of the tabs.

Had a meltdown of the primary drive of what was a multiple drive system. Decided to break it all down and carefully start over with a nice, slow step-by-step rebuilding to make sure things went smoothly. Primary drive went back fine and the operating system installed fine (for a change). Then the surprise hit. Went to add two more drives that were full of video and they're being shown as "not formatted".
I know this is somewhat vague, but I really have no clue where to start looking to try to figure out what happened. That's why I'm posting here, hoping someone can point me somewhere! The drives were fine, now they're not?

System is as follows:
Asus P4P800-E Deluxe
Prescott 3.0 P4
1 Gig Kingston DDR400 RAM
W2K Pro SP4

I'll thank you in advance for any thoughts on this and I'll be happy to add any details asked for...

There was a large document I was working on just about an hour ago. I had saved it, and I reset my computer shortly after because I wasn't able to connect to the internet. When I got back on and reopened it, the document was one massive line of squares. I found a variety of conflicting solutions online, though a common problem seems to be people saving their documents onto removable storage. It was just on my internal hard drive.

I tried changing fonts and I even tried pasting it into text forms online and even opening it on another computer, and it's still just one huge mass of squares.

Emptied Recycle Bin and Run Disk Cleanup but it liberated less than 200 MBytes!
Some long  time ago, somebody told me to delete files from some folder and after doing it I found again over 100GB free space. But completely forgot who has told me this and which folder I had to empty.

Do not want to take a risk, so please HELP !

Pls help me wit dis pblm.

Answer:Windows suddenly restarting with a blue screen

We do need the DMP file as it contains the only record of the sequence of events leading up to the crash, what drivers were loaded, and what was responsible.

If you are overclocking STOP

You may be able to get the DMP files without crashing by booting into safe mode (F8) with networking.

To enable us to assist you with your computer's BSOD symptoms, upload the contents of your "\Windows\Minidump" folder.

The procedure:

Quote:
* Copy the contents of \Windows\Minidump to another (temporary) location somewhere on your machine.
* Zip up the copy.
* Attach the ZIP archive to your post using the "paperclip" (file attachments) button.
*If the files are too large please upload them to a file sharing service like "Rapidshare" and put a link to them in your reply.

To ensure minidumps are enabled:

Quote:
* Go to Start, in the Search Box type: sysdm.cpl, press Enter.
* Under the Advanced tab, click on the Startup and Recovery Settings... button.
* Ensure that Automatically restart is unchecked.
* Under the Write Debugging Information header select Small memory dump (256 kB) in the dropdown box (the 256kb varies).
* Ensure that the Small Dump Directory is listed as %systemroot%\Minidump.
* OK your way out.
* Reboot if changes have been made.

OK. So I have had this computer for serveral years (2.6ghz amd althlon cpu, 3gb memory, etc) and I've always kept superfetch on, and the time from boot to a ready desktop was always around 40 seconds. But then, last month, I found out that if I disable superfetch, I would get better game performance (because my video card uses shared memory). But after doing this, I did notice that I gained 5-10 fps, but my startup and application load times dropped drastically. For example, Vista would hang at the Welcome screen until around 1 minute after boot and then slowly load all my programs. So, I decided that disabling superfetch wasn't worth it and turned it back on (I had set the superfetch service to "Disabled" and now set it to "Automatic".) But as I saw my apps load fast once more, I noticed that Vista STILL hangs for a whole minute before loading the desktop (cpu usage 0%, cached, free, memory = no change), (which then runs as fast as before I disabled superfetch). I looked around the internet and thought that I had somehow changed the registry key to cache programs and not boot up files. I checked and it seems like it is set to cache both boot and program files (See screenshot). My question is, if so, how come Vista suddenly hangs for so long at the boot screen. I know that it is not a startup program, hardware, os problem, software, or drivers, because it was when i disabled superfetch and enabled it that it started happening. Thanks!

Answer:Windows Vista Suddenly Hangs at Welcome Screen

The link gives a 403 Forbidden error - so we can't see the screenshot.

I'd suggest using the Windows Performance Toolkit. Try the steps here: XPerf I'm new at this, but I think that you can skip the StackWalk parts. There's a section on Startup tracing about 1/3 of the way down the page.

Good day to one and all,

I have encountered a dilemma of sorts with windows 8.1 suddenly booting only to a blank screen.

Was testing some of the themes I had downloaded for windows 8.1 when I clicked on the theme "A different touch Alt" and all of a sudden windows went blank. I could feel the OS running though co when I pressed the power button, it turned off after the usual amount of time it normally takes to shutdown.

Ever since I try to start, it only shows up until the Windows logo (blue squares) with the spiraling dots and then just blanks to a black screen that is illuminated.

Like before it appears that the OS is running in the background cos th HDD activity light keeps flickering. When the mouse is moved it shows the white default cursor moving around with the blue "processing" ring coming on and off and then disappears. Comes back on when the mouse is moved.

Tried booting in safe mode but no difference it shows the windows logo and then blanks out.

Also tried restoring, but it goes through the whole restoring process (initializing, processing, finishing), and thn says that it was unable to restore and that no files have been modified on the PC due to an unspecified error (0x8 1000204). However that's when I noticed that the restore had failed scanning the file system on drive E:\ ! Windows was definitely on Drive C: . I rebooted to command prompt and was surprised that the drive letters seemed to have changed. My windows dri... Read more

My PC crashes abruptly and unexpectedly (there is no blue screen, the screen just goes black). This occurs more and more often and makes the PC difficult to use.
It usually happens when the hard disk works intensely, e.g. a full scan by Microsoft Security Essentials (which is never completed).
It is often related to high fan activity so perhaps overheating is a problem. However, it has also happened when fan is running slowly.
It is sometimes related to stress on the video card: entering new scenes in games has caused shut downs.
The computer is a custom built PC from December 2012
Windows 7 Professional, SP1, 64-bit (Norwegian language version)
Processor: AMD FX-8320 Eight-Core, 3.51 GHz
RAM: 16 GB
Graphics Card: Sapphire Radeon HD 7950 3GB GDDR5
Speccy results published:
http://speccy.piriform.com/results/DeWOkD0Qbu8ppVLdwdqWtCd
I have run SysnativeBSODCollectionApp.exe, results are attached (had to kill the process as it took more than 5 minutes with “Waiting for SystemInfo”).
I will be happy to provide any other info.
Would be very grateful for any assistance!

Answer:Windows 7 suddenly crashes (no blue screen)

Are the fans and lights still on when the system "crashes?" Or does the system completely lose power?

You will need to run a couple of hardware diagnostics www.carrona.org/hwdiag.html Be sure to run all the tests on that page.
In addition, I would suggest you test your power supply https://www.sysnative.com/forums/hardware-tutorials/4061-test-power-supply-unit-psu.html

You may wish to try this hardware stripdown procedure too www.carrona.org/strpdown.html

Apart from that, we don't have much to do software-wise — I'm 99% certain it's a hardware problem. You could try updating the BIOS, though it may not be the best idea as the computer could restart suddenly halfway through the update.

Hi --- you guys were able to help me a couple of years ago and I am in a bind again.

My computer suddenly showed 100% of hard drive being full and 0% free space. Obviously performace has ceased.

I deleted tons of music, several gig.
I ran CCleaner
I ran Malwarebytes - nothing found
I ran Super Anti Spyware - found nothing
Tried defrag but needs approx. 15% free space to run so it didn't run
Tried disk clean up to compress files but this did work

I downloaded a couple of file size type programs but they would not load becasue of an error message that said they were not win32 applications

Hard drive is 225 Gig and I shouldn't have anywhere near that amount of space used up.

Note: I can currently get online (it takes about 10 minutes to open Firefox browser) but I am not sure I can install any programs becasue of the win32 error and/or space restrictions for the temp files used on installation.

I have a 4 gig flash drive and a laptop I can use if that helps.

I have tried everything and any help you can give would be much appreciated.

Thank you,

Kevin

I have a Dell Dimension 8300 running Windows XP SP2. I went to defrag the hard drive and discovered that it was too full to proceed. I then moved off a large amount of files to the second internal hard drive, ran CCleaner and freed up abou 28GB of space. I also used Advanced System Care 5 to clean things up. Then, suddenly, I boot up and get the Low Disk Space warning and my computer shows that I have 0GB available. Disk Cleanup found some extraneous files I could delete and CCleaner found some more. After this, I checked my disk space and it then had 20GB free. Out of curiosity, I refreshed and kept checking the disk space and it went down each time I checked it until it was at 0 again. I did not do anything else on the computer except refreshing windows.

I tried using TreeSize Free to determine where the space is being used up but got the error "...is not a valid Win32 application." I tried running it in Safe Mode and it gave the same error. I also tried to run Trendmicro's HouseCall online scanner and it gave the same error as TreeSize.

MalawareBytes found no problems. Kapersky Internet Security found 4 infected files during all of this and they were deleted. They resided in my archives on an external disc and originated in the Temp folder which has since been emptied.

So I purchased a 1TB Toshiba Automatic Backup Portable Hard Drive - Burgundy (PH2100U-1EWR) back in December and it worked great. I reformatted it to FAT so I could play all of my movie files on my Playstation 3. One day a few weeks ago, I was streaming a movie and suddenly it got very slow streaming, like slow frame to slow frame with no sound. I plugged the HDD into my computer and it was suddenly slow at looking up files. Some files do not even come up. I am still able to transfer small files from the harddrive to my computer but I seriously have no idea what happens. I get a Short DST fail when I run Seatools For Windows and HD Tune doesn't bring up any results. I lost the receipt for the device and all I have is a online banking record as proof of purchase so I am nervous regarding Toshiba's warrently policy. I would ideally like to fix this on my own and continue using the harddrive. I don't care if I have to delete everything on it, I would just like it fixed! Please help thank you.

Answer:Toshiba 1TB External HDD suddenly slow and full of errors

You can't fix it on your own. You will need to contact Toshiba for warranty replacement and copy off any data you want to keep as they will just send a replacement with nothing on it. If the serial number on the drive comes up as less than a year old then you may not need a receipt but who knows how long it sat on a shelf, it can't try to contact them. If you bought it somewhere where they itemize and store receipts then they may be able to give you a new copy.

Also, you should use Toshiba's diagnostics on the drive: http://storage.toshiba.com/storage-services-support/warranty-support/software-utilities

I recently upgraded to Version 1511 of Windows 10 Home. I have been using it for almost a week without problems, but all of a sudden this morning it is booting to a picture screen showing the date and time.
When I click on the screen it changes to a password page. The thing is I have never had a password. I have tried leaving it blank and clicking OK, but it will not accept this. So I am in effect being shut out of Windows. How can I get back to Windows?

Answer:Windows suddenly booting to calendar screen then asking for password

I ended up having to re-install Windows from a back up I made a couple of days ago. What a drag!

How many re-installs of Windows 10 is this for me? Six, seven????.... I've lost count.

The problem appeared to be related to a security update for Ver 1511 that did not install properly or got corrupted somehow.

Have reported incident to Microsoft for what it is worth.

Hi dunkinrick. Welcome to TSG. What browser version are you running? If Internet Explorer, you can give this a try: Open up IE, on the Toolbar up top click on on View>Text Size> and make sure your size is set to medium or whatever size you want to use to view webpages. If you don't have IE or this does not solve your problem, let us know and we'll go from there.
