I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

I like many others have the whole case cracking issue on my Envy - yes it is out of warranty but I special ordered and spent a bundle so that I could get 5 years out of it not 2.  I tried to extend the warranty but that was a complete CLUSTER and never happened - I have lost my job and cannot afford a new computer and use it for my part time job.  This is a home computer and moves from my home office to my living room - rarely ever leaves the house and is in pristene condition.  Trouble with the answers in this forum is that they are all PM's, except for the ones who have described how to take the machine apart which I can't really risk doing on my own.  Like Dell, HP quality has gone down the toilet!!

Hello HP, I bought the HP Envy less than a year ago and now the laptop is comming apart at the top left corner. It makes poping noises when I open and close the screen. This is the laptop I bought for work (Software Developer), so I can not afford to be without a reliable machine. I am from the Eastern Cape in South Africa, and I am starting too loose faith in all things HP. What can I do? Armand van der Walt

Hello HP,

I am deeply concerned - I bought a 17" HP envy but less than a year since
, the laptop is coming apart at the bottom near the Hinge for the screen to the left. I am afraid to open it because it makes a "pop" sound every time I open the screen.

God knows I have been extra careful with this laptop. Yopu will not find a scratch on it from bangs or things like that but am deeply scared of this 1200$ piece falling apart not even a year into my using it.

Can someone please advise where to repair this from?? I am based in Uganda but will be travelling to San Francisco and Los Angeles soon.

Please advise, am beginning to lose faith in the machine, and brand..

Answer:17" HP Envy Coming apart at the left near screen hinge

Wow, my 15" HP Envy looks almost exactly the same and the hinge is no longer fixed.  I assumed the problem was because I found a screw under the laptop yesterday but when I tried to screw it back in it went through the housing and inside the computer.  Apparently the screw then caused a problem with the fan and I need a fix as well.  I spent several hours this morning being passed back and forth between the US and Slovak companies because I'm a US customer currently located in Slovakia and according the the support desk I need to put my laptop in a box and mail it to someone in the US if I want it fixed because somehow, and god knows how this is cost effective, the fan for a computer that's sold in the US is not available in Europe.  I'm sorry I don't have a better answer to your question, but my experience suggests you may not get service in the US unless you bought your laptop there and if someone from Support tells you they will service your computer you should check with multiple people.  The first Support person I talked to assured me the Slovak's would fix my fan when he told me to contact them, only to find out after being transferred 4 different times that in fact they won't.   I wish you good luck getting your laptop fixed and I'll let you know if I find any decent solutions but so far all I've been able to figure out is that its likely better to spend my har...  The above is my son's laptop. It began separating about a week ago. It is a Pavilion G7.  What is causing this issue? Is there an easy way to fix the problem, aside from purchasing a new computer. The laptop works fine. We are not sure if this is a battery issue (BIOS) or other issue. That corner did run hot from time to time. He has cleaned it out and it is not hot now.  Of course it is out of warranty, but a computer should not do that when used properly.  Thank you for any advice and help that can be given.

Some time back the left hinge broke away and started pushing the body out. I opened the case myself to find out the screw assembly has broken away from the base causing the metallic hinge to push the body upwards. Is there any authorized parts/spares shop in Karachi, Pakistan where I can get this fixed? or can I order the base assembly online if no shop is available?  Model : Hp Pavilion g6-2032se

I'm currious as to weather I'll hear from these people in this lifetime or the next. I enjoy my Laptop and would like to continue using it but as time goes on it keeps seperating more and more and I have to snap it back into place to keep in together. I'm hoping to actually hear back from someone this time that will be able to help me in fixing this issue.

The right hinge broke on my ENVY m6. Now the left one is about to go. The waranty is up and I have noticed that this is a common problem with this product. I should hope that there has been a recall on this. HP should at least repair the issue free of charge (waranty or no waranty). I take great care of my things and my computer is no exception. Please give me advice on this one. I am extremely disappointed at this point.

Very frustrated with this...I opened the laptop gently as I would always do  and the hinge on the left side of the laptop just snapped and popped out of the plastic monitor frame.  The design of the hinges are just terrible and i can now see how they work because the case has been damaged just from opening and closing the laptop.  I can now see inside the whole left side of the case.  To top it off I have already invested considerable time into upgrading the OS to Windows 10 and customizing and installing software on this laptop. I cannot close my laptop entirely since the screen closes on an incorrect angle. Since I am out of warranty, is there any way to fix this problem? After reading several posts, it seems to be a common problem with the envy models.

Question: Left hinge

Hi This is about the back cover below the left hinge which pops out around 4 to 5 mm when laptop is opened or closed. After checking, it seems that the back cover area that supports the left hinge is very weak and damages easily. I always thought that every laptop maker has tests which certifies how well a laptop deals with continuous opening and closing. Obviously corners have been cut and quality control have not been vigilant. With the number of complaints this has, HP should do an unconditional recall to redeem their name. I was considering getting a Spectre for my wife but now I have doubts about thier quality and customer focus.

Question: Left Hinge

I have had the HP Envy for some time and expected it to be a premium product by HP leading me to believe that it would be a good long term laptop to use. Unfortanately, this is not the case, after spending a huge sum of money on a laptop I would not expect the laptop to have such a stupid problem, where the laptop seperates from it's casing. After doing some research I have found that this is a regular fault and HP aren't doing much about it. I am giving HP a last chance to contact me as to what they can do for me before taking action myself.

For some time, the casing on my computer's left hinge has been coming apart. When moved, the two pieces of the casing would click together, and moving the hinge would cause the screen colors to become washed out at random, which could only be solved by adjusting the hinge and hoping for it to return to normal. Today, I went to close the computer and the casing on the lid around said hinge popped open, allowing the back half of the hinge casing to fall out. Attempts to close the lid casing, with or without the hinge casing piece, have failed. Opening or closing the lid is now difficult, and I am concerned it may cause further damage. My computer is no longer under warranty, to the best of my knowledge. Is it possible to have it repaired, and if so, how?

Hello:     My computer is having problems with the hinge falling apart (both sides),it is out of warranty, HOWEVER, I have searched the forums and it appears that this is not a problem that is exclusive to me. It appears that a lot of the HP Envy models have the same hinge problem which makes this a design flaw. In need of help addressing this issue. Pictures showing both sides:Side 1, main problem (right side) (the farther out the screen is the worse is, for the sake of not further damaging my computer I do not show when the screen is further out). Side 2, problem just started on this side (left)

Hi there,I recently ordered an X1 2017 but sent it back for several reasons. One minor issue with it was that the left hinge was slightly crooked. Not by a lot, some might not even notice, but for me not really acceptable for a 2k5? device. Unfortunately it was the first thing I noticed during unboxing. With the lid closed you see that it's not parallel to the rest of the device. Meanwhile I have ordered one again and unfortunately it's the same in terms of crooked hinge. So I'm suspecting a general "problem". Obviously the support team never ever heard of such a thing.Just wondering - how is your's? I don't think I'll do anything about it since I don't think the service team will do a better job than the factory and generally things don't tend to get better by taking them apart. However - just curious if I'm the only one. Cheers, reach

Hi,

I have purchased a Lenovo Y560 laptop on 03-10-2010 and  I got this left hinge issue. I was about to close the laptop when I suddenly heard a click sound and after a thorough inspection I found that the left hinge is broken without any reason. I went through a lot of discussions over the internet and I found out that this has been a common problem in this product.

2) When I tried reaching the customer care again , they  gave a new case id for the same issue and the case id : 4270154295 and ONLY then they looked into the issue.

Answer:Y 560 Left Hinge Issue

I just wanted to report that I'm having issues with my left hinge as well. It's very similar though not identical in nature. Anyway' I had noticed that my left hinge was looser than the right hinge a long time ago, very soon after the purchase. and after I got my machine back from the service center after they replaced my motherboard. I never though much of it, but I decided to investigate this morning. As I was opening and closing the laptop, I noticed that the back of the computer next to where the battery is bulges out a bit when i open the computer, and bends in when I close it. It only happens on the left side. Then, I turn my computer upside down to see if there are any loose screws, and I see a weird piece of plastic in the screw hole where the bulge occurs, and I pull it out. I turns out it's a section of twisty tie, the kind that you use to close your sandwich bread bags. After I pulled that out, the screw straight up just fell out of the hole. There was nothing holding that screw in place except for that little section of twisty tie! Anyway, even with the screw out, the bulge hasn't gotten any worse, and the screen hasn't gotten any looser, which tells me that nothing has been attached to the other end of the screw for a long time now. I'm going to call the service center to see if they can replace the body of the machine, or possibly send me a replacement. I'll update you with any news. Update: So I got in contact with Lenovo and am getting ready to ship my ma... Read more

Question: HP envy left hinge

I've read in the forum that someone got their laptop repaired at NO COST?? Even after lapse of warranty? Wow, what did you do to convince HP to do this? I have sent several requests and complaints and a HP rep phoned to ask about it then told me to pay $300.00 for the repair. I do believe a substandard quality back cover which undoubtedly costs very cheaply to make is a good trade of for keeping customers. But it seems HP is more concerned about making money once and not considering about after sales and follow up sales. They certainly lost me and I was considering buying the Spectre but not anymore. BTW I checked an online supplier for the back cover and it sells for $35.00 from China but I prefer to do the repairs myself.

Question: Left Hinge problem

We have purchase our HP Envy TS 15 from Costco online about 3 years ago. The warranty has expired. About couple of months ago I saw the left hinge seperating from the casing. It makes a clicking sound when the screen is closed/opened. I am not sure if may be getting worse. But today, not sure if this is related but I realized the battery was drained and although the computer was plugged, it was not charging.  After reading numerous other posts on this hinge issue, I wanted to see if HP can provide a path forward to resolve the issue and repair my computer. Thanks for your time, Alp

I have had my Envy for about 2 years. The left hinge has broken and when I went to have it repaired, I was told it would cost over $300! This same thing happened to the HP laptop I had previously that this new one replaced! I purchased a HP Envy TS 15 notebook in December 2014 and so far it works fine but no longer under warranty.  However, the left hinge of the laptop is broken which leaves the top left corner of the plastic cover with a slanted appearance against the screen.  Also I noticed from previous posts that there is a flaw with the hinges with some of the HP Envy laptops.  Now, what can be done to fix the broken hinge?  Thanks for your assistance.

Wow , I have had the same problem , left hinge screw and besel came off and then got stuck between the screen and keyboard . Went to close the lap top and the screw was stuck in the hinge and next thing you know I have a cracked screen. Bought this laptop in December still under warranty , but HP says that this is not a know issue so they will not cover physical damage. Then I find this message board and wow , here we are all with a left hinge screw issue. Only problem this caused a broken screen. My case has been escalated still waiting for a call or email .  Any one have any advise? Geek Squad wants over 1000.00 to fix screen , that is more than I paid for the laptop new. Really disapointed in HP service , have a second HP Envy 17 in shop under warranty repair for a fan malfunction , they are fixing that one. This really may be my last HP. I own about 14 machines between my office and home. May be time to look for something else.

This is in response to the 2014 post, "HP Envy 17" Left Hinge and Casing," and I'm posting here b/c I'm not able to reply in that thread (maybe HP got tired of hearing about it?). I am having the exact same issue but with my HP Envy 15.6". I purchased it 13 months and 3 days ago. Up until this point, I've loved it. It's been an excellent machine. That is until this morning. The left hinge completely broke and the plastic piece detached. When I close the laptop I can place it back on, but when I open it up it pops off again and makes popping noises. I want to note that I have taken good care of it, gentle care (in fact I haven't opened and closed it very much, no reason the hinges would be worn after only a year), and basic, routine usage. I don't know what to do. I'm concerned that this will only get worse over time and am worried of the potential internal damage this could cause. I've read all of the threads, the many, countless customers who have the same issue. It really calls into question HP's brand and the quality of their products. I assume my warranty is expired. And it's very suspicious that this happened just at the year mark, about a month after my warranty expired. This seems to have been a known problem since 2014 (almost 3 years!) with no solutions for customers. The only option I've seen is a repair at around $150-300, which I think is outlandish to pay and insulting to customers. This is not average "wear and tear." This is clearly a design flaw... The left Hinge on my HP Envy has become loose; this poses a problem when opening/closing the lid as it grinds against the casing.  I've had a lot of difficulty navigating HP's Customer support website.  I travel a lot with this laptop and despite treating it with great care the hinge has come loose/broken (from what I understand has become a common problem).  I am out of the warranty and was wondering if anyone could point me in the direction of a few repair options.  I like HP, I find this whole issue disheartening.   Thank you for any help you can give.

Just checking if there has been a fix for this since I see this has been a problem for many people. I as well noticed the hinge and casing pulling apart but never thought it was broken. Until the fan stop working and computer wanted to shut down. Quite frequently I heard the fan making screetching noises which probably had the plastic from the hinge and casing floating around it. My question is this an easy fix or just buy a new laptop. Paid alot of money for this and works great other than this problem. Thanks

So I was working on my laptop last night, and while I was trying to move the screen to have a better view, the latch suddenly broke. I had no idea why it could just break like that. My laptop is still working just fine, except with the broken latch the screen is not level. I called Lenovo customer service this morning, and the rep. said I could send the laptop to them tomorrow. She asked me if it was an accident, because if it was, I might have to pay for the service. I don't quite understand how Lenovo can determine whether a certain damage is caused by accident or simply poor product quality? I'm really anxious about this because I have so many papers to turn in for school, and several work-related documents. Has anyone in here experienced the same problem? If so, how did Lenovo deal with your case? I'd be grateful to hear from you 'cause I would seriously never do business with Lenovo anymore if they charged me to have the latch fixed.

Are you taking about the latch or the hinge? It should be fine with the hinge repair under warranty, as long as you didn't drop it or anything like that.

I only had my laptop for a year and a half when the problem started. The left hinge is broken and now, I don't close my laptop anymore in fear of not be able to turn the power on anymore. The left part of the laptop is elevated (because of the parts from the broken hinge) and and I feel that everytime I move the screen, it might fall apart. Everytime I adjust the screen I hear a sound that feels like it's going to break anytime soon. The power button seems to get affected too, and I fear that in a few days I might not be able to turn it on. This has been ongoing problem for years with hp laptops and why is it that hp is not doing anything about the issue?

I have a left screen hinge crack on my Z480. It catches when I open the lid and I fear it's going to get worse. This is actually the third problem I've had with the plastic on this computer, and from reading other discussions I don't think I'm alone. I tried calling tech support. My laptop is out of warranty but it's not 2 years old yet. I haven't dropped it. The guy pretty much told me what I expected to hear (that there's nothing to be done) and told me to take it to a local servicer but when I asked if he had a recommendation he said he "didn't know where I lived." I live in Cincinnati, OH and told him I could share that info with him but instead I got a lecture on the impermanence of material things. I would just really like to know my options and get any help from the manufacturer of this product.

If you bought your computer with a credit card, call them up and ask if they offer free extended warranty on items purchased with their credit card. MOST credit cards doubles your warranty (at least 1 year past the initial year). However, the claim will need to be filed through the credit card company and needs to be covered under the basic warranty. Since you have "cosmetic damage" you will need to prove to the CC company that the issue is with the device construction. You can probably do so by digging up old post and sending them a faxed copy of all these posts.

Answer:Lenovo y 50 left hinge to tight

Welcome to the Lenovo Community Fellow Wisconsinite !

Another owner of your model experienced a similar problem with one of the hinges being too tight.  He / She found there was a small nut on the hinge that could be loosen so that the hinge moved more freely.  Please see message number 89 in this forum discussion for additional information......

My left hinge has broken and is slowly pulling the computer apart everytime I open it.  Small peices of plastice are breaking off as a result.  This computer has been treated very well and has never been dropped.  I read that this is a common problem.  How do I go about getting it fixed?

Hi --- the left hinge of my HP Spectre ultrabook started breaking. When i open the laptop, whatever the hinge is attached to on the half with the screen seems to be delaminating. I have to hold the hinge as I open it so that the screen does not break away. Looking at the forums, this seems to be a common problem. Can anyone share how I can get this fixed? thank you! Roman

I bought my SL500 2 years ago. It has been working fine, been in quite light use. Now last week it's left hinge just snaped broken while I was opening the lid. I see this is a very common problem.Has anyone had any luck with Lenovo to get it repaired? It surely sounds like a material or poor engineering problem. I guess it was not as robust and sturdy as advertised

Answer:SL500 Left Hinge Broken

You should be able to find a new one online for cheap, and the maintenance manual is on the support site. The SL series are not real ThinkPads, they're the low end consumer model.

The left hinge seems to be undone and when you open/close it seems to pry off the left corner of the plastic bottom of the casing. After the laptop is closed, i can push the parts back together, but upon opening it gets torn open again. What can I do, is there a replacment casing I can buy or something? Please let me know as soon as possible.

The left hinge on my Envy notebook seems to be malfunctioning and is separating the bottom case, leaving a gap an making it next to impossible to open the computer.  It sounds very much like the same problem as others are reporting but I haven't seen a public asnwer. Any ideas what the best way to have it fixed is? Can I fix it myself? It's a 3 year old computer, functioning well otherwise but I'd hate to have to put a lot of money into it.  Thanks!

Exactly the same problem as before - all working great then on opening the top cover (screen) the left hand hinge seems to have failed causing the bezel, screen and top cover to become separated from each other. HP were contacted and arranged collection, repair and re-delivery.Shame this has happened again but hopefully HP can address my issue again soon.Regards

Hello.

I have an Asus X56TA laptop. It worked like a charm until yesterday, when suddenly, without any warnings, my left hinge just broke off when I was closing the screen.

It seems that the hinge just got _completely_ stuck. Really, like it was made of solid concrete. So when the screen worked as a lever, it easily broke off.

To illustrate my problem, here are some pictures:

Anyone has any tips what to do with this? Is there any chance of making the hinge work again? If yes, I thought of using some very powerful glue to "repair" the hinge. The plastic cover is 100% OK, so I only need some usability

I also found a brand new hinge for my notebook model on eBay. Is it possible to remove the broken hinge and install the new one?

Thanks in advance for all the tips.
