PC wont boot, however power light remains on

Question: PC wont boot, however power light remains on

I have had this custom built PC for a couple of months. All of a sudden when i pressed shut off on Windows 10 and went to bed, it stopped working. The fans wont start, I don't hear running from my SSD or hardrive, however the light that indicates the PC is on remains on. I have unplugged my power supply and unplugged my surge protector from the wall and it remains on. The only way i can get the LED to turn off is by unplugging from the motherboard. My specs are here --->

Preferred Solution: PC wont boot, however power light remains on

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Answer:lenovo y500 Wont boot up, Power Button light on,Backlit Light on,Fan Blowing Fast 5sec all is OFF

Hi Wacky78900,
Welcome to Lenovo Community Forums!
I?m sorry to hear that your Y500 Laptop is not turning ON after playing game and turning OFF manually, I suggest you to perform the Flee-Power and check the issue. Below are the steps to check and resolve the issue:

Remove the battery and any other peripheral device connected to the computer.
Hold the power button for 10-15 seconds and then connect only the AC Adapter and try to turn ON the computer.

If the issue persists even after performing the Flee-Power and as the computer is in warranty, I would Strongly Suggest Calling Technical Support for Assistance. Click here to open a link where you can select the country and get the exact contact support number. I?m sure they will be a great help.
Do post us back for further queries.

1.3 GHz AMD Duron

256 MB RAM

3 GB hard disk (contains wanted old PC files [Win98 upgrade])

15.4 GB hard disk (contains XP only)

40.0 GB hard disk (want to format and use for storage)

as soon as i installed XP on my 15.4 hard disk, the H.D.D. light turned on, which i thought was natural cuz after all, i was installed a pretty big OS.
but once i started using the OS, it stays on. my CPU is not being overloaded either, i checked its usage its functioning normally around 0 - 12% without any applications running at all.

Why is my H.D.D. LED on 24/7, only on this hard disk? My other hard disk, the 3GB, it works properly.

I called a friend and he said it could be a system cache problem with the hard disk.

The only explanation i can find is PERHAPS that when i installed XP i accidently installed in the NTFS File System on a 15.4 GB Hard drive when i should've installed it on FAT32. If this is the problem, can i go back to FAT32? IF not, what are my options?

This problem doesnt seem to affect too badly on OS performance, but definately on XP bootup and shutdown, which takes a good whole 2 minutes for each.

another problem, although my Speakers are hooked up correctly, i cant find the device under Device Manager, and i havent been able to use sound. How can i fix this problem? I tried the troubleshooter without much luck.

Answer:H.D.D light remains lit and wont shut off. help!

you cannot go from ntfs back to fat 32 without wiping the drive and creating a new partition. you can, however, go from fat32 to ntfs. ntfs is far superior to fat32 and should be used whenever possible, none of your troubles should be caused by ntfs. see if you can acertain that your hdd is actually not active whilst the led is lit. the motherboard will power said led when there is any ide bus activity, so the problem may not be caused by your hard drive at all. additionally, most hard drives have thier own led hookups, and you should use that if you are looking to narrow down your suspected faults.

Answer:hp power light flashing wont boot up

I hope you don't mean a household vacuum. Check all the wiring to make sure you didn't pull something loose. If you used a metal nozzle vacuum, you could have fried the mobo.

power light comes on but the screen remains black there is no sound nor any flickers please help operating hp 2000 dual core windows 7 thank you very much!

Answer:turn on the computer and power light goes on but screen remains black

If this is a notebook PC, try connecting an external monitor to the VGA port. If the display comes up on the external monitor, it points to an issue with the screen.

If there is no display on an external monitor connected to a notebook PC, it points to an issue with the motherboard and will require a professional diagnosis.

Hope this helps.

The problem is in the thread title; normally my PS_SW light stays a solid yellow and I'm able to boot up no problem. After moving my computer around the house a bit, when I plugged everything in the light was flashing yellow and is now unable to boot up. All the build information (including motherboard info) is in my profile. I looked through the manual for my motherboard (available here: GIGABYTE - Motherboard - Socket 1155 - GA-Z77X-UD5H (rev. 1.0) ) and it was totally useless. It does not seem to be blinking in any pattern, just a steady blink on and off. Any assistance would be greatly appreciated--I'm really out of my depth here.

Answer:Motherboard power light (PS_SW) is flashing and system wont boot up

Check inside the computer to see if any connections came loose or unplugged.

Was experiencing general issues with my windows profile after windows updates last patch Tuesday so I initiated a system restore and let it run today.  After completion laptop turned off (instead of rebooting?)

Pressing the power button: Power button turns white (on) for ~30 seconds, then laptop turns off (indicated by power button light)
no fans
no screen (back-light or otherwise)
no POST codes - beep codes or light codes.
no other visible activity

During that period nothing else happens, unless I press the power button again. If I do this
The fans spin up momentarily
The system then powers off (as indicated by the white power light)

I've tried:

Disconnect power/battery and hold power button (60 seconds)
Power system on with just battery
Power system on with just wall power
Remove mSATA HD and repeat the above
Disconnect video connector and repeat above
Remove mPCI WiFi module and repeat above
Completely disassemble and remove CMOS battery (tested at 3.1 VDC) for 60 seconds, reassemble and repeat above

All with no change in behavior

I am able to get a light code 2 Amber / 3 White if I remove the RAM module (as expected)
D + PWR diagnostics cycle successfully through a range of colors then nothing

Laptop is 2 months out of warranty.  Any help debugging the issue is appreciated!

I have a AMD64 3500 CPU
512MB DDR Ram
Geforce 6800GT

However my pc recently would not boot. As this is my second day of owning it i am somewhat perplexed. The hdd and dvd drives spin the power led lights and so does the HDD access led yet nothing happens and my monitor registers no signal. I have reset the CMOS and still get the same problem.
The HDD led remains constantly lit as if the mobo is trying to constantly accessing the hard drive.

Any advise would be much appreciated.

My computer was down when I came back from lunch and could not get it to come back on.  If I hold the power button down for about 7 seconds it blinks orange but there is not noise from the fan coming on or post beep.  Also the green light on the back is not on either. All of the other equipment sharing the same power strip come on but not the desktop so it is not the power strip.  I also tried to set it up in another office on a completely different circuit and still does the same thing. What should I try next?

Answer:OptiPlex 790 Wont power on power light blinks amber

Which form factor, desktop, mini-tower, small form, ultra-small form?
From the (desktop) manual: Blinking amber light indicates a problem with the system board.
Are any of the 4 diagnostic LEDs on when it won't boot? ,They're on the front of the PC next to the power button. Look up error codes in the manual.
Possible power supply failure if the green light is off on the back. Can you try a different power cord? What happens if you push the power supply diagnostic button on back of PC next to that (green) power light?

Daughter last used laptop on battery power and ran id down completely until computer shut off. She plugged in the power cord and it would not come on when pressing the power button.  Laptop was plugged in overnight and this morning same issue - the power light just blinks five times when you press the power button. This is the same behaviour whether plugged into power or not. I've tried holding down the power button. Tried with battery removed and A/C power, but then no light comes on at all.  I've tried removing the battery and A/C power, holding the power button down for 30 seconds, then install battery and plug in A/C power, but no difference.  I tried a different A/C power adapter and no difference. Any ideas?

Hello Guys,I have HP dv6 pavilion series with Windows 10 (64 bit) for 4 years now. I dont have the Battery so I usually work with directly connecting the Power cable. It worked fine till now. Today it abruptly Shut down and since then its not booting. The Charging light keeps on Blinking.I have tried the 40/30 sec trick (holding thepower on button for 30-40 secs for the capacitors to discharge) twice, but in vain. I also cleaned up my cooling fan and checked for all the wiring, its all intact. After re-essembling the laptop, the same problem persists. And about the Bios update, I do think I have the latest bios updated, as my laptop is connected with internet, and I usually keep it all Updated. And if someone recommends me to Update the BIOS, well I cannot power on my laptop, so is there any alternative for updating the BIOS? Earlier it did Abruptly Shutdown twice or thrice over last few days, but used to Power up again. But today it wont work. Please Help Me guys. Thanks

Bit of a long 1 this.A while ago I had a problem with the power connector on my laptop. When I opened it up I could see the little jack had come away from the mother board,so a bit of soldering was in order,it did the trick and it worked fine. Then the same problem again so out with the solder. Now when I plug in the power adaptor the green indicator light comes on but when I press the power button it wont turn on,the harddrive doesnt spin the fan doesnt kick in NOTHING.If I remove the battery and just try to power the laptop with the adaptor the power light doesnt even come on,its the same if I just try to power it with the battery.I have replaced the CMOS battery but its the same deal.I have been reading up on this and it seems it could be any number of things. The laptop is the I series 1200 type 1161.There isnt any additional memory sticks installed so I dont think it could be that.I would really apreciate any help on this as it really is doing my head in.Cheers

Answer:Thinkpad I series 1200 power light on but wont turn on

It sounds like you went a little too solder-happy and over-soldered something causing a short or something like that. Not sure but I'd suggest you go back and check for that possibility....on the other hand a hw component might be in need of replacing?

Good Luck.

I purchased my Toshiba Satelight l775 brand new 7 months ago, this is so crazy. It wont power on, i use the laptop plugged to adapter 4 to 8 hours a day, then the laptop goes unused and unplugged for 16 to 20 hours a day.

This is my 3rd laptop, i know i've put more strain on the previous two (HP and Acer). I've never had a laptop go out on me this quick, even that $300 acer laptop went through more strain and never went out in the 15 months i had it.

My backup laptop is a 4 year old HP, i've had it for 4 years, its been dropped several times, used and abused still going! i just had to upgrade ram and hard drive. But, this Toshiba! she was so beautiful when I saw her!

I've never dropped her, never spilled anything on her, so why is she putting me through this stress at a bad time???

A bad time because even though i'm under warranty, i'm going on vacation in 2 days!!! I need her, i'm not trying to take my old HP that came out in 2008.

I can't afford to send my Toshiba off for 2 weeks, not right now.

Today, my virus software was doing its typical scheduled scan, i didn't have the laptop charging, because i was off of work, so when i'm off the laptop gets used more and charged more. I look at the laptop and its off, i just figured, battery died, let me plug in the adapter and do some reading. Well nothing ever happened. 8 hours later, i've been working on this for over 8 hours, i've searched all over google, many forums, none ... Read more

ok i'm having some issues with my old PC. It was built in 2005 so its fairly old but it does the trick for word processing web browsing
I have been having some issues - can anyone help?

Powers up fine. Lights on mob ... However.. HDD light is constantly on with very little noise coming from both HDD
Fans run as normal
No smell or 'burning odour' as far as I can detect
No vga signal being detected
No beeps at all however I cant see a speaker on the mob I ordered one from amazon for £2 so we'll see if I can get some life from it when that arrives
CMSOS battery changed

I did manage to get the PC working after I changed the power connector to the VGA card as it booted up with a message saying no power to VGA card -
Just before boot I was advised of a CMOS Checksum bad and offered F1 to run SETUP and F2 default values and continue
I selected F2
booted up fine after that however I had to knock the machine off to get a hard wire connection to my wifi router as it was asking to regsiter my copy of xp online (which is legit)
any ideas? I'm thinking may be PSU or...mob?
its a ASUS A8V Deluxe, 2GB RAM and ATI Radeon 85XT Platinum and 400W PSU
any ideas? thanks in advance :)

Answer:PC wont boot HDD light on

Agree that Cmos checksum error indicates a bad BIOS probbly due to flat battery
After changing battery and pressing f2 did you save and exit BIOS (f10)? Bios settings need saving.
recheck BIOS and make sure DVD drive is first boot followed by your hard drive (save and exit)
Make sure no usb drives or DVDs left in optical drive.
if still struggling disconnect none used drives (dvd and second HDD) and see if it will boot.

Hello people, an hour ago I put my Lenovo 510p into energy save mode. When I tried to reactivate the laptop nothing happens. I removed the batterie and the power cord, put everything back in and hit the power button: The power button and the "on" LED on the front shines (continuously) but nothing else happens. No booting sound, no keyboard LED, no nothing. Removing the battery and power cord, pressing power button 10 times in a 1 second interval, then holding it for 30 seconds hasnt helped. Any tips what I can do furthermore? GreetingsDix

This has gone from bad to worse. It started with an error message when I went to close down, to the effect that the Start Button wasn't working and would reset on restart. I restarted; it didn't reset. I could use programs but the Start button still wouldn't work. I tried to restart in Safe Mode, but the computer wouldn't go into Safe Mode -- I got the screens that let me select reset but the final step that would select Safe Mode with Networking just got skipped. I'm a little sketchy on what I did next (I got kind of ticked and had to step away from the computer for about a week to cool off, and I'm afraid I didn't write out a history while it was still fresh in my mind) but I tried a variety of things to force it to start in Safe Mode and the result is that it doesn't start at all now: the power light comes on, but the screen stays blank and there's no action on the drives.
Should I use my laptop to create a USB Recovery Drive to start the desktop computer on?

What I did on my Dell was open the case and unplugged it completly from the IDE set and unplugged the power to it. I hadn't used it in years and mine was doing a similar thing. If you don't use it simply unplug it and it'll go away in your device manager.

Hi, I wonder if someone out there could help me with a problem?

I was using my M2 on Friday when my friend accidentally knocked a very small amount of soft drink onto the front of my M2, I immediately put it upright and got a hairdryer on it.

After leaving it an hour I tried using it and everything was working as before which was a great relief, however a day later I was using the M2 to check my e-mail when all of a sudden in went off.

The power light is on was still on and so was the light that indicates I have a CD drive slotted in, I tried many times and it would not boot up, so I left again for a day and yesteday morning it looked like it was booting up only to freeze on the Windows screen, it then did it again and it hasn't booted up since.

Could anyone please give me some advice on what I could possibly do to fix this problem?

Please be realistic. What you can do in this situation? Not much! You can try to start the unit. See if you can enter the BIOS and if yes how long the unit stays ON. If the unit works for a longer period you can try to boot up from CD (for example with recovery media).

You can try to connect HDD as external one to other notebook and try to save all your important data and install OS again. More than that is not possible. If there is some electronic malfunction it is not easy to fix it on your own and helps just technical investigation to see which hardware component is damaged.

My father-in-laws desktop computer is acting funny. When the power button is pushed on the light around the button comes on and the fan starts but thats all it does. The fan usually comes on and is quite loud and then it quiets down and you hear the rest of the computer booting up. Nothing is on the monitor except "no signal" and the fan is the only thing heard running. It worked fine the day before and it was shut down properly.

Any thoughts?

Answer:Computer won't boot but fan and power light is on

The first thing I would try is to make sure that all the connections to the monitor are tight. If they are, I would try another, known to be working, monitor and cables to eliminate that problem.

Dell optiplex 755, mini tower . My son pressed power button and computer made an ear-piercing noise and would not boot up. The power light comes on, but no fan, no post, no beep codes. Monitor displays "no signal". Is this a bad power supply? Bad motherboard? Not sure where to start, need HELP!

Answer:Power button light on, no boot.

do you mean a single beep, or multiple beeps? These codes will identify the issue.

Specifically with Dell desktops, you can refer to these beep codes:
1 beep: BIOS ROM corruption or failure
2 beeps: RAM not detected
3 beeps: Motherboard failure
4 beeps: RAM failure
5 beeps: CMOS Battery failure
6 beeps: GPU failure
7 beeps: Bad CPU

Additional Dell error information can be found here.

Greetings,, I have a Dell Dimension E510. The other night, my son went to shut down the computer, and before it went down the correct way, he turned the power off. Now when he tries to turn the pc on, the power light will flash slowly, but the pc will never boot up. If it was a bad power supply, the power button would not even light up... right? Any ideas?

Answer:power light flashes, but pc won't boot

Get your Service Tag number (on the system and the paperwork) and type it in here to access all the stuff on your PC:
Look in the FAQ's or the manuals for how to reset the CMOS and that will probably fix it.
Your system has gotten stuck in a power save state.
The E510's need a BIOS upgrade (under downloads) to fixe several problems. Get it too

Hey guys, in need of some help, got a HP Pavilion DV6-3040SA that wont boot up.

The screen isn't coming on and the caps lock is just flashing away at me, on the list of error codes on HP's website it tells me that one flash is CPU issue. When I first had the laptop doing a hard reset and then swapping RAM about cured the laptop and it got to the boot stage. As I needed to re-install Windows I had to wait for the hard drive to be given to me to install. I come to the laptop only to find its flashing away at me again.

Tried re-seating CPU and moving RAM around but this time its still broke. Any ideas?

hi, if I'm posting this under the wrong area please let me know what the correct area is.
My gateway ec1440u won't boot. all that comes on is a red light on the power button it self. and when I turn it on nothing happens I know the details are vague but I just want to make sure I'm even posting this under the right area.
Thank you

Answer:Gateway EC1440U netbook wont boot red light

Try removing battery and a/c adapter, hold power button 30 seconds, plug back in charger to see if it will start. If not plug back in battery. Are there any signs of life at all - fan noise, LED lights, etc?

If this fails, carefully remove the RAM sticks after doing the above steps again with no power to PC. YOu may be able to google your exact model + RAM upgrade video to see how RAM is accessed and removed. Then power up without RAM to see if you get beeps. If so then the mobo is alive and wants RAM. If not its likely a bad mobo.

If PC is less than a year old its still under factory warranty.

I was upgrading this computer to Windows 10, I had done an in place install but the kids had spyware that was showing up even then. I did a refresh, it failed I did an install and finally got into windows. Installed a couple updates and rebooted.
The computer has been bricked since. The only thing that is happening is the LED that indicates the power above the button will not stop flashing white. Plugged in or not plugged in, after holding down the power button for 5, 10 and 30 seconds, The power light stops flashing for a moment and then starts again. I tried multiple outlets. No clue unless it is coincidental hardware failure.

Answer:XPS 18 will not boot, power light will not stop blinking

I'll ammend that.  I went back in and re-removed the battery cable.  I also removed the CMOS battery cable this time... that at least got me to an onscreen error message and access to BIOS!

Hey all,

Weird one here. Got myself a new graphics card the other day, upgrading from a Radeon x1650 pro, which died after 4 odd years of good service, to the Radeon HD5450, and everything seems to have gone successful except for since installing it, when I press the power button to boot, the PC's power light will blink 7 times and then boot up normally on the 8th blink.

I was kinda in 2 minds about whether or not to troubleshoot this if I'm honest, but figured I might as well in case it could be causing some kinda damage. I can't see any error's appearing, nothing in event logs, as far as I can tell the PSU should be more than capable, everything seems to be performing as expected, it's just these 8 blinks before the system starts to boot.

I've reseated the memory and Graphics and tried booting with a few non-essential components disconnected, which fixed it for the first boot, but the issue reappeared for every boot after that.

As well as my listed components I've also got a PCI NIC (D-link DGE-528T), wireless KBoard + Mouse, USB Wireless Adapter, a SATA DVD RW and a couple of fans (1x80mm, 1x92mm and 1xLED120mm)

...any ideas?

we had a storm the other day and think a power surge hit my computer, even though it was on a surge protector. I also lost the vcr with the surge so i know it's not a virus problem.we think it was the lighting that hit close to the house. the computer i have is an e-machine t1105 with windows xp. When i push the power button on the computer the light dosen't come on but the fan starts and it sounds like it's running. the cd rom will still open but won't seem to load anything. i tryed the reboot disk to see if it would read but i get nothing but black screen and monitor says check pc the screen is ok. the green light on the back off pc where plug goes is still lighting up green. Is there any hope for my computer? even if there isn't any hope do you think the data on hard drive may be retreivable? or a part that i could have switched out and have a computer again without having to purchase a new one?

Answer:storm came now computer won't boot and power light off

Sure doesn't sound good

Off top of my head, fan spins, nothing else comes 'on', possible

Memory / CPU / Video card / Motherboard malfunction.
PS: if fan comes on, but no power light, could be a faulty/buggered up power supply too I suppose ( I woulda thunk the power light would come on before any fans spun )

DOH !!! can't even blame Microsoft on that either.... its hardware.
Is it a microsoft computer?? hehe

Gateway DX4640 desktop froze in the middle of viewing

It required a hard re-boot. Now I get a slow flashing power light. Fan starts but it won?t boot. I tried bootable CD with no success, although the CD drive does spin when a CD is inside.

We tried the following:
1. unplugging power and then depressing power bottom for a minute to discharge battery.
2. pulling out the memory cards one at a time, and then booted with just one memory card at a time without success.
3. removed battery and reinserted after 10 minutes

I would appreciate any advice you might have.

Answer:Slow Flashing power light – no boot

This is a common issue with Gateway machines, it is down to the onboard Video chip overheating and failing, though this mostly happens with laptops!! have you got a spare vid card lying around or can you borrow one from another machine and try it in agp/pci/pcie expansion slot, to rule it out ??

Hi guys

Today I was on my PC browsing the MLB website, nothing demanding was running and then suddenly it shut down with no warning. It will not turn on anymore, the monitors are recieving power but nothing appears and their power lights are amber, the base unit has a green flashing light at the front but I the HDD and other components do not spin or start.

In the last few days, I have heard "sqweaking" noises coming from the base unit (presumably the mobo) which sound when I do mouse clicks, scroll windows, or something as part of the CPU loading process.

I have tried to hold down the power button for a while but nothing happens. I presume the fact that my monitors are recieving power means teh surge protector adapter I am using is working but that the base unit PSU or mobo might have stopped?
Any ideas would be fantastic.

Answer:PC shut down and wont boot up - base unit light flashing

First thought would be the PSU.......or the CPU (heatSink) fan failed

The monitor won't come out of standby mode until it gets a video signal from the PC, which it evidently is not getting. Coupled with the fact that the keyboard is not working, it's very likely a faulty motherboard.

Desktop Computer Won't Boot Up, Monitors are off, but Power light is on

Guys, this is what has happened.

(1) A few times, when I get home from work, my computer had unexpectedly turned itself off
(2) After pushing the ON button, the light turns on, but it doesn't BEEP and doesn't boot up
(3) The monitors are blank
(4) The fans are on

I've tried taking out all the components and wires and putting them back in, but nothing is doing the trick. The funny thing is that this has happened many times recently, but when I turn the computer on, it's fine. Now, this time, it just won't boot up, even though the power is on. My computer was behaving normally prior to this event.

I have an Acer AM5630-U5209A with upgraded 600mw power supply.

Thanks a lot for any help guys,

I just purchased a used comp off ebay (probably a bad mistake) that was suppose to boot to c:. This is a AMD 1800 XP, 128 MB RADEON video card, 60 gig hardrive, CDRW, 52X CD. When I try to boot the computer the monitor light immediately goes from green to orange. The monitor works fine on my other computers. I also noticed that the video card was loose when I first got it out of the box, i secured it but then found out the problem. I have also used a video card out of another one of my comps, nVidia 32MB, and still got the same results. I can usually figure stuff like this out, but this MB is extremely complicated, and the power supply has more wires and cables than I have ever seen. I thought maybe the hardrive wasnt spinning and tried another one and still had the same result. My video card and processor fans are all running so there seems to be power. The CD drives have power. I also noticed that there is a light on the front of my case, dont know what it is, but it also turns orange. Any suggestions.

Did some searching on here and tried a couple of things. Turned computer on earlier and just got a black screen and two green lights on front. Turned off power from back(because power button on front didn't work), powered back on and an amber light came on and green light on the right. I can hear the fan running and I can open doors on my disc drives so i'm thinking it's not the PSU, plus I had replaced that from the original one when it failed a couple years ago. Another person suggested a motherboard test so I removed all the cards and disconnected all the drives like they said, powered back up and the solid amber light is now solid green. What can I try next?

I have an HP Envy 15 that in the last few months will not boot without a "jump start".  It just happened, no warning was given nor are then any error logs pointing to a possible issue.  I've done a BIOS reset, replaced the CMOS battery, upgraded to the latest available BIOS, all to no avail.  I'm at the stage where I suspect a hardware problem but am not sure which component is to blame here. Here's the sysmptoms:  When you press the power button, all lights blink once as if it were trying to boot then immediately all lights blink out and back on again.  The screen will not come on during this time nor will an external monitor light up.  This cycle repeats indefinately until you pull the battery.   The weirdness of this all is that during troubleshooting this issue, I found it WOULD boot if I removed one of the RAM sticks.  It does it's power light dance once then on it's second cycle, it boots fine.   Once booted, you can run the laptop for as long as you would like without any issue (I ran it for over a week, just had to turn off sleep).  Power it off however and it's back to it's boot loop. . .  I've done a full load test with Prime95 as well as several hardware and memory tests with Memtest86.  All hardware checks I've done have passed. So here's how I fire up my laptop from cold boot: 1> Disconnect power and pull the battery.2> Pop the bottom cover off and pull the top RAM sti... Good afternoon, couple of days ago my computer which is not paid off yet and out of warranty went into a no boot with a soiid Amber light. When I cracked open the case I found my cpu fan was nearly frozen very stiff to turn. I cleaned it out but now curious if my cpu died or the PSU? The interesting part if I unplug all external perpherals from the computer and test it get the solid amber light and on the back by the PSU the green light is out as soon as I turn on the power. If I unplug the power let the system discharge then plug the power back in before turning on the power the green light on the PSU is lit.
Does this sound like a PSU issue? Could it be the CPU? I'm getting no post beeps or anything powering up. Also is this a specialized PSU or can I use any standard ATX PSU this is in a mid tower. The service code is <ADMIN NOTE:Service tag removed per privacy policy>.

Does the processor heatsink fan rotate freely?
Does the power supply fan work?
A solid amber power light indicates there may be a power problem or an internal device malfunction.
The Inspiron 530 Troubleshooter and Diagnostic Codes are HERE.
Most generic standard ATX power supply units can be installed, with either a 24-pin or 20+4-pin main motherboard power connector, with or without the on/off switch.
You should be able to buy a compatible power supply from either a local or online computer store.
Note: A power supply with four SATA power connectors, is required.

I am having a boot issue with my Dell i7559 laptop. I was using it normally this morning and suddenly get an IRQL type error. The computer resets itself and is doing some kind of diagnostic test and it freezes in the middle of that. So I reboot the computer and it won't boot up after that.
The current situation is that I can power it on. The power light will turn on, and the keyboard lights will turn on, but nothing else happens. I don't hear the fan at all (usually it turns on when I boot up the computer) and the screen is completely blank. The screen is working though because when I hit D+power on, I get the flashing lights. When I plug the computer into an external monitor, there is no response. But other than the power light and keyboard light being on, there is no response whatsoever from the computer. I think this is considered a No-post error but I couldn't find any more info to diagnose the issue (there is a tech support page on that lets you diagnose no-post errors via the LCD lights on the laptop but i7559 isn't listed on that page).
This is similar to an issue I had a few months ago. I was getting lots of weird blue screen of death errors, and the computer wouldn't boot past the bios and eventually got bricked. That time the solution was that I opened it up, cleaned out the dust, swapped the RAM into the other slot, and then when I rebooted it, it worked fine and has worked fine until this issue today. When I plug a power cord in, the power light instantly (almost) lights up, whether or not I've pressed anything to try powering it up. When I DO press the power button, nothing changes. Nothing sounds like it's running at all. Someone suggested moving the RAM around, so I placed it in a different slot, but that didn't change anything. This was a frankensteined computer that was given to me, so I can't even really provide much in the way of specs. It's an IBM ThinkCentre S50 (shell anyway), but appears to be loaded with a 40GB Seagate HDD, Intel P4, 512MB RAM, and an AcBel power supply. In case this matters, and I don't know enough to know or what I would do about it, but there are a few open plugs for power. The motherboard has a couple plugs running into it, but one still open. The HDD has two empty plugs, but one plugged into it. I would have no idea how to play around with the power supply. Not to say that's the problem. Thanks for any help.

Answer:Computer shows power light upon plugging in, but no boot, noise, or any startup

It could be the power supply (officially called a "PSU" or Power Supply Unit) that's faulty and needs repalcing, but you were right not to go messing with it as even a faulty one can give you a nasty shock from the power that's stored up inside it. I've worked on fixing & upgrading computers for many years, yet even I draw the line at changing a PSU. I let my local PC shop do it for safety reasons, plus I believe in supporting little independant PC shops whenever possible.

I was running Ubuntu Linux then decided to change back to Windows XP. I was happily running the Windows set-up disc to reformat the entire hard drive. After this was done, the set-up disc went on to copy over a load of files and then went into a reboot, the screen went black (OK) but then everything just hung . In the end I went to power off intending to start again. The computer would not power off except by my pulling out the battery and supply cable. If I reconnect the cable, I can power on with the power button after which I hear the fan and the optical drive being read but then it just stalls - nothing on the screen, cannot get in bios and still refuses to power off. It"s either a big coincidence or the three symptoms ( no screen: no bios: no power-off ) are all a result of the failure to self-reboot during the windows set-up? I have removed the CMOS battery and left it out overnight but to no avail Can anyone help? My laptop is a HP Compaq NX6325. Thanks.

Answer:Laptop wont boot and wont power off

The first question is hardware or software? That this happened in the middle of a Ubuntu to XP conversion is interesting, but may be purely coincidental. It could be a straight-up hardware problem that just happened to occur at this time.

So, the way to determine this is to try to boot using some kind of media. XP disk, Ubuntu Live, Hiren's, whatever. It if boots, hardware is possibly good. If not, hardware is bad.

If hardware is bad, you WANT the hard drive to be bad. Everything else costs more money than the computer may be worth.

I just recently Inhearted a computer from school, after my IT teacher couldn't get it to run. Both my IT teacher and I thought for sure it was the power supply or the power switch. The Problem is that the computer dosn't do anything at all when you press the power button. My teacher told me that when he first started having the problem he would press the power button, and maybe Once out of every fifty times it might boot up. then the problem got worse, and only started like every 100th time, now it dosn't work at all. The system is a Used MDG with a 1.5GHZ cpu, and mostly all stock parts. The system came with a stock 300 watt PSU. When I first took it apart, I pulled out the power supply completely, and tried to put in another one, that I had laying around, however it had the wrong connector, so I just put the old one back in. when I put the PSU back in, it seemed to have power, as I could hear the electricty following thorugh it, and a green Led light would light up on the mother board, however if I pushed the power button, it would still do nothing, the CPU fan wouldn't even turn. The only time I actually notice the CPU Fan do a quick turn, is if I disconect the power from the PSU for a long period of time, then reconnect it. So I went to the local computer store tonight with the switch, and the man tested for me, and it did end of being a faulty switch, so I purchased I brand new. I then put it into the computer, and still nothing, and believ... Read more

I have an A300D 16C on Windows Vista home premium and the touch sensitive lights wont light up when I press the first button to make them light up but the lights are still working just not permantly on which I want the equium sign at the bottom should light up.

Answer:Equium A300D-16C touch sensitive light wont light up

Hello Jonny

Those buttons are controlled by ?Toshiba Button Support? utility and this utility is part of Value Added Package. To be honest I don't know if there is some way to enable/disable the buttons functionality but if you want you can try to do follow:

Remove preinstalled VAP from the system (Control Panel > Programs and Features), restart the notebook and install latest VAP for your notebook model listed on Toshiba Support page under > Support & Downloads.

Please let me know if everything works well again.

Hello All -I'm posting to the forum as I'm at a complete loss with support. I recently purchased a ThinkPad T450s, which worked well for about a week, but has since failed to boot properly after normal use. The motherboard / system board has been replaced three times by Lenovo support (twice with the depot and once on-site). After receiving the system yesterday from the depot (again after normal use and trying to resume from sleep mode), the ThinkPad won't boot. The power light blinks on and the backlit keyboard lights up for a few seconds, only to have the system shut itself down with a light pop. This cycle repeats with the system attempting to power up anywhere from two attempts to eleven (no BIOS flashes or any other signs of life). I've tried all options noted in the forum and suggestions from support (remove battery, hard reset, etc.), but haven't had any luckAgain, I'm at a loss, and simply want my system to work or be replaced. If anyone has any insight, it would be greatly appreciated.??Thank you!

Answer:Thinkpad T450s won't boot - Power light blinks and keyboard lights up momentarily // no BIOS prompt

My laptop was working fine yesterday, charging and powering on an off normally. It updated without my telling it to. When it was complete (since it said don't turn computer off until finished) I either just shut the lid or I shut it down when it was done. This morning when I wake up and try to turn it on it won't power up. Then I noticed that the power button was blinking, like it is in sleep mode, tried pressing 10 times then holding down power button for 30-60 seconds and still nothing. Next I saw that although the power is plugged in the battery light won't come on. I don't know if it is charging (it could be dead). I tried a bunch of different outlets and that isn't the issue. I also listened to the computer and there is a very soft high pichted noise that dissapears if you unplug it, and that when you hit the power button and it starts blinking, the sounds changes fom high to lower pitch and back again over and over. But no other sounds or fans kicking on or drive spinning. I am pretty sure it isn't the power cord but have no way of checking. And I can't remove the battery without voiding the warrenty. Anyone have any advice, besides calling to have Lenovo send me a box to send it back to Lenovo since it is only 4 months old and still under warrenty?

Answer:Lenovo Edge 15 laptop 80K9 battery light won't come on, power light blinks

Suggest you eliminate problem 1. Do you have spare power supply unit? Worth trying that first. Your battery may be in sleep mode and won't wake up as battery is drained and hence needs charging. 2. You can go to local retailer and suspect a good one (John Lewis) will let you charge it for 30 mins. Ideally go back to person you bought it from. 3. Once you are in use restore to go back to last working point. I have to telll you the support from Lenovo and Microsoft was very very very disappointing. I tried to even return the PC and swop for HP as mine is only 2 months old. However, the answer was send back to Lenovo. Hope you find a way to get it charged

dell xps m2010 wont start up ,blue power light and bluetooth light stay on,i have been searching posts in other forums as well as this one and i thought i`d narrowed it down to the graphics card,i was right to an effect,my approach was to take the xps apart following dells website documents, while i had the top (dvd drive) off ,i noticed that the graphics card screws were really loose (this was my first job)...i tightened these. The top(dvd drive ) i re-connected ,but propped it up at an angle so i could still see motherboard and parts,(warning!be carefull!!)electric!! ...attached power cable and pressed power button after half a dozen times pressing this it came to life.I noticed my fans were working and thought this might not be my motherboard after all ,no overheating happening...then it froze on windows xp ??it was a start !another 6 to ten times pressing power button it worked again this time not freezing.went into bluetooth with usb mouse and paired keyboard ,made system restore point and restarted .It took maybe 4 times with it being glitchy(freezing ..not powering up) ,but when it does load xp without freezing try restarting windows xp and then it eventually finds its feet!!!my xps 2010 is running ok now.jimb

I will turn it on and after a minute or two the monitor goes to power save mode and the hard disk light goes from off/blinking to solid on and the power light stays on.

I have reinstalled the operating system and i thought that fixed it. I had SP 1 i installed all of my updates and SP2 and it starting to do it again (it will do it in SP1 but not nearly as often or when i run a flash heavy program: PSP Video or even the Scion website).

It will not do it at all in BIOS as i did every test on the diagnostics page for my hard drive (all pass) though if it turns off it usually turns on and runs dskchk and it wont stay on for that

In safe mode it is also fine it will not turn off once

I dont know what i did last as it was fine then i was gone for a month and I had it unplugged etc., came back hooked it up and it started doing it after a little while

I have taken a can of air to every inch, switched the Flat cord going to the HDD from the Motherboard.

All fans run fine

Thats all i can think of right now ask me anything else you need to know

I'll give this forum a couple of days/a week maybe then i'll take it to a local shop to diagnose it

Much thanks to anyone who has any idea's

Hi. Tonight I had a problem with my laptop. It was in sleeping mode, and when I open the lid there were no mouse function and no touch screen function. So the only thing I could do was to press the power button for 3 seconds to turn it off, but it didn't completely, because the screen turn off, but the power button light is blinking just like when it is on sleep mode, and I'm not sure if the hard drive light was on, off or blinking before this, but now is blinking. I press the power button and nothing happen, I press it for 3 seconds and nothing happen. I even did the HDMI connection to another monitor, but both monitors don't show anything, not even recognize that something is connected to the HDMI port in the new monitor. There is no sound, nothing, just the 2 blinking lights. What should I do? Thanks PS: I'm not sure if it's Windows 10 32-bit or 64-bit. It was upgraded from Windows 8

Hello everyone,  I am facing this problem from the past few days in my Lenovo G510. Whenever I plug in the charger for charging the laptop, both the power light and the battery light with orange color, starts flashing and the laptop stops charging.  The color of the battery light changes to orange, even if my laptop is nearly 50% charged. Can't figure out, what is the problem? Any help will be appreciated!

This just started happening recently. The power indicator light (near the power plug) does not turn on and Windows does not recognize when the adapter is plugged in; the power icon and cusomized power saving "on battery" behavior reflect that. HOWEVER, the battery does charge. The "lightning bolt" charging light on the front between HDD and system power lights comes on and the battery recharges if not at 100%. Any thoughts on how to troubleshoot this? Is it more likely a Windows or hardware problem? The BIOS does not have the power adapter test mentioned here, and I could not find the software download for the Smart Adapter functionality (this laptop was installed with clean, non-OEM OS, so any OEM software had to be added manually). Thanks in advance,Kyle

alright, I just got this inspiron 6000 from my sister that didnt work. she said nothing would happen at all. well it turned out the power light would go on, caps lock light blink for a few seconds and it would turn off. somehow the memory wasnt in the slot very well. bam, got it working, dumped all her pics and crap to a external hdd, and wanted to wipe it all out and start over. she is sending me a xp disc, but for now I just figured Id go back to 2k cuz I have that disc and when I get the disc go back to xp.

anyways, I couldnt figure out how to format the drive, because obviously xp was running off of it. anyways, I kept trying all the del - f2 - f8 - f12 to get a dos prompt before windos would load but I couldnt. so I figured Id just put the 2k disc in because I thought I remember that it formats it right before it installs. but it asked me where to install and the disk was partitioned and I wanted one drive letter so I cancelled the install, before it was actually installing though, said f3 to quit and I hit f3. now when I try to power it up, the power light comes on, the hdd light comes on for maybe 1-2 seconds max, then the cd drive light comes on and it spins up, then stops, and the screen just stays black, never did anything either. just black the whole time.

I cant use a floppy to try anything because no floppy drive. I tried starting up with the win2k disc in but doesnt work. I searched on my desktop running win2k and it showed a tutorial for making a usb flas... Read more

Answer:Windows XP, power light, hdd light for 1 sec, black screen

oh, also, i did try and search and most I found were a black screen after the self test or the windows logo, not right away.

also, dont think it matters, but when the lights go out, it is at the point where hitting the power button again, the computer instantly turns off.

also, just checked, and its nothing to do with the lcd. I just hooked up my monitor, and my monitor tells me when there is no signal, and it just stayed black, then when it was unplugged from the laptop that is when it said no signal.

Hello! I have been having this problem for about a week now, ever since I set my old computer back up in my room. The problem started when I left my computer alone for a while when I went out (the computer was working fine and I had just finished transfering pictures to my computer from my camera). I came back and the power light on the front if the case was on, but the battery light was off. The monitor had also gone into sleep mode. I turned off the computer since I knew whatever I was going had already been saved and exited out of, unplugged everything (including the monitor and PC/Monitor cable) and plugged it back in and turned them on. The monitor goes straight to power saving mode (sleep mode). The PC is definitely receiving power, the keyboard's caps and num lock keys flash, the wireless mouse's light flashes, the pc fans turn on, and both of the power and battery lights turn on. But, after a second, the battery light turns off, and the only light I can see through it is the power indicator's light bleeding through. The strange thing is, I've been able to get it to work before, about 2 times actually. Both of those successful boots happened either when I ignored the thing for so long or left it unplugged over night, but had already forgot it didn't work last time. But it did those times. So I tried to leave it unplugged all last night. Just woke up, and... still nothing. I really need to to get those pictures to my mom, so if someone could ple... Read more

I had a power cut earlier and my pc turned off. When the power came back on I tried to turn on the pc and nothing happened. I can tell the pc is getting power because the lights on the motherboard turn on but the pc just wont boot. I had this same issue before when there was a power cut and all I needed to do was unplug the power supply and wait an hour or so. Ive done that now and my pc still wont turn on for some reason even though the motherboard lights are all on.
What can I do to fix this as I desperately need to get my pc back up and running.

Answer:PC Wont Boot Even Though It's Getting Power

Generally, another way is to switch off at mains with it plugged in and to hold Power button in to discharge PSU.
Try that instead of waiting hours.
Failing that it will mean start disconnecting bits from the PC (drives/RAM etc), but possibly the PSU is blown.

Hello all i have this problem, hope u can help me: I have updated my bios from f5 to f8k (latest version downloaded from gigabyte)the reason i have done this is because i want to upgrade my cpu to a phenom 2 955\965 and the latest version allows am3 cpusi have downloaded the latest version, upgraded the first time with @bios from windows (i know that was not wise but i didnt knew at that time)-restart--Computer didnt boot.Cleared cmos, entered bios -qflash- installed the old bios, everything back to normal. After that i tried upgrading to newest version with qflash.Upgrading went fine, restarted, loading factory settings in bios, rerstart, loading os,cpu-z showing the new verrsion of bios - f8k.the big PROBLEM is that every time i unplug the power cord from the psu,or just hit the on\off button on the back of the psu,the computer wont boot anymore.Fans come on,hard drive comes on and the cdrom is making a sound as the system would restart over and over again.IF i clear the cmos with the jumper, computer boots, everything is fine, but after power is cut it wont boot again until i reset cmos.I flashed bios again to the old version(f5) and the problem dissapeares. After that i tried flashing again,I tried every version but they all have the same problem.i teared the computer apart, checked everything inside, left only 1 stick of ram, video card and cpu cooler, still experiencing the same problem.what is the problem? i even wrote to gigabyte, they told me to:1) Turn off power.2) Remove... Answer:pc wont boot after power cut off

I can relate to your issue.

Not to steer you off track here, but I ran into a problem with one BIOS upgrade I did.

The last and final BIOs update for my motherboard was a BETA version 1015.bin

I am rather leary about using BETA anything when it comes to things like this.

So I went with the last available firmware update which was a final release candidate which was 1014.bin

The flash went well and the system booted successfully, was even able to get into the BIOS to setup system defaults.

The problem I ran into was I was not able to enter the BIOS setup utility again.

Everything else ran fine, so I did a google search on that firmware version and realized there was a bug in that version that was never corrected.

So I went with the 1015.bin BETA release and have not had any issues since.

In fact I am still using that BETA version and have been since 2009.

So my point is, your .bin files may have a bug in the code that they seem to be to lazy to fix.
