Battery charging only works when lid is closed (sleep mode)

Question: Battery charging only works when lid is closed (sleep mode)

I have a HP DV6 7000 laptop. Battery charging only works when lid is closed (sleep mode). If I close the lid and plug in the charger, the indicator light shows orange, and the battery will then proceed to charge to near full. If I open the lid prior to the orange light changing to white, the battery icon always says: __% available (plugged in, not charging). Several different chargers give identical outcomes. ALL of them will fully charge the battery in about two hours; provided that, the lid is kept closed. If I open the lid, even at say 50% charge, the orange light switches to white, and the battery icon always says: __% available (plugged in, not charging). Thanks, Ed.

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Hi @ElyMayor Thank you for your reply. The last thing I can suggest trying is a restore back to factory. Performing an HP system recovery (Windows 7) While doing the recovery there is an option to backup your personal files. If you have not previously done one now is a good time. Restoring Files that were Backed Up Using HP Recovery Manager (Windows 7) You can also contact HP support for assistance. They can remotely access your system to help alleviate difficulties. I have the same problem, tried the aforementioned solutions, to no avail. I think this is a design flaw and no simple solution. I suspect some type of viltage control board has failed. It woukd be nice to know what the sikution is, even if it is too expensive to fix.

I have a new W520 (a few months old).  I usually work plugged in, but this morning I was on battery for quite a while and the battery drained to 25%.   I put the laptop in "SLEEP" mode and then returned home to continue working plugged in. After several hours, I noticed the battery was still at 25%.  Hovering over the battery charge icon in the system tray, the message said "plugged in, not charging".  I have two AC adapters, so I swapped them out, but still the same issue. I contacted tech support.  The person was extremely nice and remoted into my laptop.  She said the problem is the "charging port" and I need to send/bring the laptop to a warranty repair depot. However, just out of curiousity and suspicion, I decided to first shut down my laptop via "HIBERNATE" (instead of sleep), since that is usually what I do.  After reviving the laptop from hibernate mode, the battery is now charging! So, while I've solved my short-term problem and will get a fully-charged battery, it seems that something about using  SLEEP mode is causing problems with the battery recharge. Has anyone seen this or a similar issue?   To me, the problem doesn't seem to be the charging port because it's working.  Thanks!

Answer:W520 - Battery not charging after using "sleep" mode

hey leahcimp, hard to say really, but i suggest listening to the tech supports advice and send the unit in to the repair depot for their assessment.

When I close the lid on my T430, it is set to go into sleep mode.  It has done this, as it should, since I purchased it new.  All of a sudden, it will remain in sleep mode for a while, but then it wakes on it's own, and I hear it in the middle of the night, or at other times, when it should be in sleep mode..  I have all the network adapters set, "NOT to allow the device to wake the computer".  I also have the setting in the  Lenovo Power Manager, Global Power Settings, Events, "Enable InstantResume" - NOT checked........... This seemed to work for others, on other models.  Anyone got any ideas on the T430..........Why did this just happen ?

I purchased my Hp envy 360 laptop at Best Buy about a week ago. It was an open box purchase because It was in near perfect condition . I tryed charging it but it only charges when it is in sleep mode or either closed . When I plug it in while its in it has a white light and the battery days plugged in ; not charging . But when I close it there is a orange light and a couple hours later it's fully charged . I assumed I had a bad battery but I ran a battery test and it said my battery was fine . Because it charges when it's closed I assumed their was a setting I could just switch but i don't know what to do .

Howdy folks, I did some quick searching and could not find an answers to my problem and thus am posting here. I have a X1 Carbon 3rd Gen (Type 20BS) with Windows 10 and over the past 2-3 months have noticed the following problem: Problem: After placing the computer into sleep mode via the start button and closing the lid the computer will randomly start back up. I will often open my pc after noticing how overheated it is and find that it came back on and for some reason the touchscreen has been typing and opening applications. Obviously this is very annoying and results in my computer draining its batter and random applications being opened. Any ideas on what may be causing this and how I can fix it?  Happy to provide driver details and any other diagnostics if you think it would help.  Thanks,Andy

Hello,

My laptop seems to keep blue screening off and on. This seems to happen if I open and close Open Broadcast Software a few times. The BSOD also seems to happen shortly after I wake my laptop from sleep mode. I did a little research and a few recommendations were to check my memory. So I ran the windows memory diagnostic and it didn't detect any errors.

Thank you,

Hello, i recently purchased a thinkpad yoga 15 laptop with i7, 8gb ram, geforce gpu, 256gb SSD, Windows 8.1 Pro. My question is: how can I make it charge while in sleep mode? also, downloads stop in sleep mode (ie Steam) This is very inconvenient as the laptop will apparently only charge while totally on and open. Naturally, I don't want to leave my laptop on and open to anyone's use in my room, I want to keep it locked via sleep mode. I want it to be charged when I get back. To sum up, I want to a) charge laptop while it's in sleep mode, and b) don't stop downloads while in sleep mode. Thank you this is my first post on lenovo forums :]

Since I've owned my W520, my battery life has lost 15-25% per night in sleep, which intuitively seemed high. One cloudy day in a darker room I discovered the culprit: after closing the lid, the green fingerprint reader LED remains constantly lit (looking through the small crack between the monitor and keyboard).  Why Lenovo, why??? So I opened my ThinkVantage Fingerprint Software (6.0.0.8102) app, went to Settings, 'Enable indicator lights on sensor'.  Viola - my battery life now loses only 3-7% per night - but I lose the LED. Is there a special trick to retain the fingerprint reader LED, and turn it (and the sensor) off when the lid is closed?

When I leave my computer after a session, it automatically goes into sleep mode after a period of time and remains that way till I wake it up.

However when I manually put it to sleep ( via shutdown options) , it goes to sleep immediately but for only a while ( a few minutes) then it shows the desktop screen again. If I then leave it alone after it self awake , it goes back to sleep as described above.

Any idea why ?

Thanks

Answer:Auto sleep mode works but manual sleep does not

Hi,

Some softwares can stop the sleep request to work properly.

run cmd.exe as a admin (Click on start, type CMD, right click on CMD.exe and select run as admin)
then type the command
powercfg.exe /energy
This will generate a report that will show if any software is blocking the sleep request. Your next step would be to configure the software in control panel power options

Hi, I set my laptop to "Battery protection mode" which is supposed to limit charging to 60%. I noticed that once my laptop is at 60%, it switches to A/C for a few minutes, then it discharges by 1% and then charges again to 60%. This process repeats every few minutes. Is this supposed to happen? I'm worried that each time it discharges and charges again, I am wasting a charge cycle.  When I allow it to charge to 100% under "Battery Fully charged mode", it will switch to A/C when fully charged and does not discharge again so I don't think there's an issue with my battery.  Thanks for any help!

Answer:Battery Protection Mode - U410 Battery fluctuates around 60%, keeps charging and discharging.

It is fine for the laptop dont worry.

I am facing the below given 2 problems with the battery of a brand new lenovo U41-70 i5 Red model.

1. The plugged in but not charging error. Some suggestions in the web ask the user to remove the battery and change some stuff in the device drivers, but in my model the battery is not removable.

2. The battery dissipates a lot of charge while in complete switched off mode (not in sleep, nor hibernated). I have also disabled the windows fast boot mode from the power options, but doesn't work.
To give an estimate, in approximately 9 hours of shutdown (and the charging removed) the battery dissipates from a full 100 to 70%.

Note: I have updated the laptop which came with Windows 8.1 to Windows 10. Hence, the system is running on windows 10 now. The laptop is 10 days old.

If I leave my X200 closed and docked in my ultrabase and connected to an external monitor, when I come back after some time and start to use the computer, all that is on the screen is the wallpaper.  I can move the arrow with the mouse, but all the icons are gone and the computer does not respond to any commands, such as Ctrl-Alt-Del, or hitting the function key.  I have to power down the computer with the power button.  It will enter sleep mode or hibernation if I press the appropriate function keys, but it awakens to the same nonoperational state.  Is there a sw update to fix this?  I just updated the bios last night hoping it woudl fix the problem, but it didn't.  I have also tried putting it in the Always On and Presentation power modes to no avail. I only have this problem when it is in the ultrabase with the lid closed.  Is it perhaps turning off the processor due to heat buildup with the lid closed? How can I wake it up? Thanks in advance for your help.

Answer:X200 goes into weird sleep mode when left closed and docked in Ultrabase

I read in another forum thread that someone had a similar problem, and one reply said that installing the new fingerprint driver from 26OCT08 resolved the issue, so I tried that and it seems to be working fine now.  I left my X200 in the dock with the lid closed a couple of times for 15+ minutes last night and came back and was able to log back in with no problems. Here's a link to the new fingerprint driver that fixed the problem: http://www-307.ibm.com/pc/support/site.wss/document.do?sitestyle=lenovo&lndocid=MIGR-70598 Previously I had had a problem with the fingerprint reader not working after 1 minute of the screen being locked and the previous version driver fixed that bug.

for starters, this is a sony vaio e series laptop...

I know, if I enable the option, when I do a normal shutdown I can charge, say my mp3 player from my usb 3.0 port.

what I want to know is if I close the lid like I normally do at the end of my day, can I charge my device and not say..wake the computer from what is essentially a hybrid shutdown type sleep mode?

Answer:charging from compatible usb 3.0 port in sleep mode

You should be able to close the lid while still charging the mp3.

I Do this on my desktop and laptop.

I think it is just as long as windows can detect that a device is plugged in. Once plugged in you can put it to sleep without worrying that it'll stop charging.

Hope this helps!

Hello for the past 2 weeks I am facing a weird battery charging issue. Apparently the battery charges only while the laptop is on Sleep mode or Shut Down mode. It doesn't charge when powered on. The HP online support also does not have any answers. I have updated the BIOS and restarted the laptop countless times. The battery is not removable. Anybody else faced this issue and any solutions?  On a side note, Microsoft Excel crashes repeatedly since beginning. And the support has no answer to this too. Thanks for your help! Regards,Garry

Have Sony VGN-CR220E with Vista Home Edition with sound problems.

All original software and hardware. Device manager says sound is working properly. Reinstalled original driver doesn't help. Volume is up, no signs of virus/bug/malware activity. VAIO Hardware Diagnostic test reports no problems. Driver version 6.0.1.5391. Has been a problem for almost a year, very consistent problem.

Whether it is netflix, itunes, windows media player, youtube, mouse clicks, or internal sound alerts from the PC...all sounds period coming out of the speaker do not work unless I enter it into sleep mode.

Coming out of sleep mode it works great...until...I try to play a new song, new video, or anything new. Sometimes I might get to play two things back to back with sound, not needing to enter sleep mode, but it is very rare. The same browser can be open (both iexplorer and firefox the same)...and going from one youtube video to another requires activating sleep mode, then hitting the power button to come out of sleep mode.

Any ideas?

Thanks

I have a question regarding my laptop.

What works better...shutting Vista down all the way or using the Sleep mode?

I have been using sleep mode more often lately and have noticed more responsive programs but is it the right thing to do?

Any advice?

Secondly...I turned off my paging file since I have 4GB of RAM and dont even use 1/2 of it in the my worst case scenario(why would I ever have to allocate that part of my HDD for nothing?)...is it safe to do this?or should I still leave a paging file available?

Answer:What works better...shutting down the pc or using the sleep mode?

I use the sleep mode almost exclusively and have for a long time. I haven't experienced any negative effects from this use and yes the resume from sleep is a lot faster than starting up from scratch. I do restart bi-weekly just to clean everything up and start freshed.

As to the page file I can't tell you from personal experience which is better but since I run 8gb of Ram I probably don't need it based on my research. I haven't seen any negative results to having this space allocated and not used. I have read that with 4gb you don't need it but as with all tweeks the answer is what makes you comfortable. You could disable it and then if you see a performance hit you could re-enable it, I suspect that unless you are doing memory intensive processing and editing it probably won't have a neg. effect on your system.

It goes through the sleep mode sequence (screen goes off, keyboard lights go out, speakers/sound goes off, etc.) but just as it's about to go to sleep it immediately wakes up and everything that had just turned off in preparation for sleep mode comes back on.

I've gone through every toubleshooting tutorial I could find (including this site's) and nothing seems to work, including steps that appear to have worked for others. Sleep mode worked as it should on this same PC when it was running XP. Under Win7, it appears to have been broken.

Answer:Sleep mode no longer works after upgrading to Win7 from XP

Run the below under the command prompt

powercfg -LASTWAKE

I usually use my Yoga 2 Pro with AC Adapter plugged in. I turn on Conversation mode in Lenovo Energy Manager and get a message of "Plug in - Not Charging" everytime the battery is already 60% charged. Does it mean that AC electricity will directly serve to run the laptop without going through the batttery like a desktop computer?
I'm worried this habit will ruin my battery lifetime.

Answer:Yoga 2 Pro - Does Plug in - Not Charging on Conversation Mode harm the battery?

Welcome to the Lenovo Community !

Yes, when the charge level reaches 60% and you receive that message it means the battery is no longer receiving a charge and the laptop is being powered by the AC adapter.

No, using conservation mode will actually extend the health of your battery which means the battery will have a longer life time.   It is the continually charging when the battery's charge level reaches 100% level that will shorten the life of the battery.

Hi, I have got a Thinkpad S440 recently. Before this, I have a U460 which come with a power management tool with option for keeping the battery level < 80% for longer lifespan (I guess everybody know this).  I want to install this in my S440 too, but I cant find this tool in the thinkpad s440, instead there is a power management driver, which after I install nothing different happen? I tried around with the Lenovo Energy Management but nothing really change, my laptop still charge up to 100% (which is 44Wh over the original 45Wh) From checking the forum, I think that a power management tool for s440 certainly exist, but i cant seem to find it. Maybe there is just none for WIndows 8.1 ? Thanks for any helps !

A few days ago i installed the BIOS 2.40 update an i also disassembled the laptop because of severe heating problems.

After putting everything together, on the windows login screen i noticed the keyboard did not work anymore.

Only the CapsLock button would light up, And after starting the notebook pressing all the function keys would get me into F8 boot menu.

Now whenever the computer starts up i cannot use the F2 and F12 BIOS menu en BOOT options.

And after that when windows starts, the keyboard stops working.

When enabling/disableing sleep mode the keyboard works again.

When connecting an external keyboard to get into BIOS, pressing the F2 buttong gives me a blank screen, and nothing happens, i have to reboot.

I took care of the dust problem before once, and that gave me no problems at all, so now i think its the bios update that is giving me the problems, since i cant even boot into the BIOS menu.

I want to try to downgrade to 2.30, i have the file, but i cannot flash the bios to an older version.

I hope there is someone who can help me out? Maybe i need to look into another direction with this problem.

Answer:Satellite A350 - Keyboard only works after enable/disable sleep mode

Ok another update.

I've downgraded my BIOS to version 2.30, and then tried 2.10.
But still the same situation.

When starting up the computer, and pressing F2, it says entering setup>blank screen>windows loading.

What could be the cause of me not being able to enter the BIOS menu?

I would say its no software or rom issue, since ive reinstalled and flashed both, with the same results and problems.

So could this be a hardware problem?

I was hoping someone here may have an answer to this. The last set of updates I did SP2 and all the ones that came with it seemed to have changed something in the sleep mode. When I put my HP to sleep at night, it seems that the battery backup is lost. I know this because when I wake the computer in the AM, it says that the computer lost communion with the battery backup and then says very quickly that it has been restored! My concern is that if we have a storm and the battery backup is not working right then it won't allow me to safely shut down the computer! Has anyone had this issue lately??? I can't seem to find any info. on it!
Thanks

Hello everyone,
My SONY Vaio is acting up, I just did a fresh install of Windows Vista and I think I need a driver that I can't find. A screen keeps coming up saying this:

"Caution
The installed battery may not be properly connected to the computer or may not be compatible with the computer.

Click OK to enter Hibernate mode, and remove and reinsert the battery.

See the electronic VAIO(R) User Guide for more information about using the battery."

When I click ok it just pops up again over and over, the battery is fine I think, it operates the computer without being plugged into the wall I think its just a driver but I can't figure it out, I have installed most of the model's drivers from SONY.com

ANYONE have ideas I'm so stuck
What are the drivers I need to make this notebook "know" its a notebook???

Answer:Battery/Sleep Mode Problems!!

Check Device Manager. To do this, go to Start and type in "devmgmt.msc" (without the quotes) and press Enter. Look for any devices that have any issues noted.

Please post back with the exact make and model of your Vaio

When running on battery this computer rarely wakes from sleep.  I noticed that if I try to wake from manually entering sleep within about 10 seconds it will come back on rare occasion, typically only once after a reboot.  Any longer than 10 seconds and it won't happen.  If the charger is connected, the device is 10x more likely to return from sleep after a few seconds.  Additionally, the manual says you can wake from sleep by opening the lid, pressing the power key, pressing a keyboard key, or tapping the touch pad.  My HP only wakes from the power bottun when on battery, and the power button and sometimes when opening the lid when connected to the charger.  The keyboard and touchpad have no effect.  I've updated all the drivers/bios from the support assistant.  While updating drivers in attempt to fix this issue, the display driver said a power state could not be changed.  I verified Windows 10 has completed all updates.  I uninstalled and reinstalled the Display driver.  No errors the second time.  I went to the device manager and made sure the keyboard power management setting was set to wake from sleep.  I did mess with the power settings a bit, I reset them to default levels of the HP recommended settings.  Nothing seems to help the situation. I've followed the steps on this site: http://support.hp.com/us-en/document/c03383935 Any recommendations?  It w... I have a few questions so that the community may better help with this problem:

What is the make and model of the machine that has this issue, and what operating system is it running? How many times has this happened, and has it always occurred since the user has been using the machine?

Thanks in advance,

Been using my yoga 3 pro for a about a couple weeks now and have had trouble with occasional battery drain overnight while in sleep mode. I will close the lid to put it to sleep, verify from the blinking power button that it's actually asleep, and then leave it overnight or longer.  Sometimes the battery level is almost the same as when it went to sleep, but sometimes it's completely dead.  It's like it's waking up on its own at some point and not going back to sleep.  But I've never caught it in the act.  And I've always put it to sleep with plenty of battery. My power settings are set to sleep after 15 min on battery.  I can't find anything else in the settings that would wake it up (no wake timers, etc), and my wireless adapter in device manager is not checked to allow it to wake the laptop.  I've seen threads about this for the Y2P, but those didn't fix mine.  Anyone else encountered this issue?

Hi curdog,Can you check in the Lenovo Energy Management if the USB charging is disabled? Also can you try closing all your applications before putting it to sleep and leaving it differently and see if some of the apps have gone "rogue" causing it not to "deep sleep".Thanks

I have a T520 (4240, BIOS 1.28) with the 55++ primary and 27++ "slice" batteries. With the primary battery on about 80% charge and the slice battery down to about 8% charge, I closed the lid and the machine went to "sleep". I didn't used it for a few days and, when I eventually opened the lid, I found the power had been lost and the machine had to be booted from cold, losing my previous session. During that few days, the slice battery had dropped to 0% charge and then the machine lost power. It never switched over to the primary battery, which still had about 80% charge. Is this the expected behaviour? It doesn't seem right to me.

Answer:No slice battery switch-over in "sleep" mode

hey damog, that should not have happen. Try uninstalling the power manager software charge both main and slice battery.once fully charge, use only your main battery. close the lid and let the unit sleep. see if the same behaviour occurs.after that, do the same thing - this time with the slice battery only.

I have numerous problems that arise whenever I use battery power on my SL500 with XP operating system and now also in Windows 7 after the recent upgrade. If the system goes into sleep mode either through deliberate action or by leaving inactive for 15 minutes thren after restarting the following always happens: 1.  Volume buttons stop working2.  Lenovo toolbox button stops3.  Some of the Fn buttons stop (I have not gone through all these to exhaustively check everyone)4.  When rebooting to fix this I always get a BIOS error (8603 - checksum bad) and have to restart again which causes the BIOS to revert to the default settings and everything is OK. The problem does not happen when powered by the AC adaptor.  My laptop is the 2746-N8G model.  Is this a hardware problem or driver issue?Other posts touch on some of these problems but I have not seen anyone with all the above symptoms. Thanks for any help you can give,

Hi DontLoveWindows, From the information that you have given me, it is showing that you have 2 anti-virus softwares installed. Avast and Norton, that are continuously running when the printer is in sleep mode, which would be draining your power. It also shows that your printer has missing or misconfigured drivers which could be using power as well. Here is an HP Photosmart Full Feature Software and Drivers download for your printer. I suggest that you Disable your startup software. To do this: Right click or touch and hold the bottom left corner of the screen and select Run.Type msconfig in the Run box, and then press Enter. The MSconfig window opens. If the User Account Control window opens with the message, Windows needs your permission to continue, click or tap Continue to close the window. If Normal Startup is currently selected, follow these steps:Select Selective Startup, and then clear the Load Startup Items check box.Click or tap the Services tab, and then select the Hide All Microsoft Services check box at the bottom of the screen.Click or tap Disable All.If Selective Startup is currently selected, follow these steps:Click or tap the Services tab, and then select the Hide All Microsoft Services check box at the bottom of the screen.Make a list of the items that are selected. One article say it is part of Connected Standby. This is that state that really never shuts off so you can get all those important notifications.

Hi all,

I have an Inspiron 1525 that is one year old. Recently the battery will be completely dead when I try to turn on the laptop and will not power on unless I plug it in. The battery meter will be at 0% when it starts up, but recharges normally when plugged in. When I unplug the laptop and close the lid (which puts it into sleep mode) the battery will be completely dead by the next morning even if it was at 100% before I closed it. I don't know why the battery is discharging completely so quickly when the computer isn't even running.

Could this just be a problem with my battery? Or is the laptop not actually sleeping when I close it, but continually using up battery power? Any help would be much appreciated.

Thanks

Answer:Laptop battery discharging when in sleep mode

Note there's a difference between "Sleep" vs. "Hibernation"
> Sleep mode still requires power (It should be minimal power but definitely still draws some power)
> Hibernation requires zero power

That said, i still wouldn't expect a good battery to discharge overnight on sleep mode so you probably still have an issue with your battery holding a charge

On my setting, I didn't select the "Standby mode to lower power use whenever it's possible" option, while having set a threshold for charging up to 85%. I suspect the battery level has dropped while I put the computer in sleep mode. This happened after I upgraded the Win 10 to its Anniversary Update version recently. Hello,
I have a Satellite A300-1MP, brand new, with Vista 32.

When I put it in sleep mode, it devours the battery. Something like 10-20 % overnight!
Why is this happening? Is this normal? If not, how do I fix it? Is there something I can do or is there a problem with the laptop/battery?

My old laptop is a Satellite M70-340, and in standby mode it would lose less then 5 % a day!

I would appreciate your help!
Thank you!

Answer:Satellite A300 - Devours a lot of battery in sleep mode

Although your laptop appears to be turned off in sleep mode it's still powering your RAM chips to retain the information.
If you want to keep your login session but without serious loss of battery charge then use hibernation mode but always save your files before you do.

I have a new Yoga 2 Pro with i7 processor. It works great and normal battery life is about 4-5 hours. But with a fully charged battery, i can close the lid at night triggering sleep mode, and wake up to an almost dead battery. Why is this happening? It's really dissapointing and I'm going to return it if I can't find a fix. I'm on the latest BIOS with all current updates. I am not using Hibernate mode. Closing the lid shoud not cause battery to continue to drain at normal usage rates. I'm hoping it's the WINDOWS 8 software but I've tried all the settings I can find.

Answer:Yoga 2 Pro Draining Battery Fast in Sleep Mode

Probably because your laptop isn't even going to sleep. Check the power light to see if it's solid or blinking. If it stays solid your laptop isn't sleeping. The sleep function on Yogas basically don't work at all.

Hello everyone.

A few hours ago my computer was in sleep mode and unplugged when the battery died. Upon plugging it back in, I was met with an empty black screen. I turned it off by holding the power button, but the laptop refuses to boot now.

Upon turning it on, I get the Toshiba start up screen for less than a second before it goes to the Windows Error Recovery Page. Both options (Launch Startup Repair (recommended) and start windows normally) results in a screen that says 'windows is loading files...' with a status bar, then moves on to another screen showing another status bar (this one green with the microsoft corp at the bottom but no graphic) and ultimately to a black screen with a white cursor. From there, nothing works. The same happens if I try to start it in safe mode (with or without networking).

I have a system repair disc for the laptop but I haven't been able to do anything with it.

Fortunately 99% of the info on the laptop is backed up. Unfortunately the 1% that isn't is the most important (class notes for the last 4-5 weeks).

I have the extended warranty on it from best buy that actually expires in 4 days, but I certainly don't want to ship off my computer for who knows how long with those files on there.

Any advice would be tremendously appreciated.

Answer:Laptop not booting after the battery died during sleep mode.

Dears, working with my Yoga 910 for 6 months now but the battery never lets mework more than 4 hours with it.every test I read is talking about 8 and 11 hours which i definately can not reach. anybody with similar problems or any ideas how to improve the running battery time? thanksAlex

Answer:Yoga 910 battery only works 4 hours in energy saving mode

I have the UHD screen, which apparently takes more power, but I get 5 to 6 hours of work. Inerestingly watching movies uses the same power.A big factor I find is how high the screen brightness is,  but yours does seem to be really low. Here is my estimate from the battery report Since OS install     6:04:30 Run a battery report by following this https://www.windowscentral.com/generate-battery-report-windows-10

The battery drains rapidly even when in Sleep mode.  I am seeing battery life of only about 2 hours (very disappointing) of this IdeaPad that I purchased in May.  Even worse is that putting the laptop to sleep does not conserve what charge remains on the battery.  I read another post from 2013 that said to disable fast boot mode in the power options, but I cannot find that setting to change.  Does anyone have suggestions - to increase battery life AND to keep the battery from draining while in Sleep mode? Running W8.1 with balanced power settings. Thanks.

Hi everyone,
I have encountered the problem that when my XPS13 is on sleep mode during the night, in the morning the battery is 10-15% or totally dead. I normally leave it at 100% or 80% so that's a lot of battery life lost. With hibernate mode on, the battery does not drain, however, I am not a fan of hibernate mode as it shortens the lifetime of the SSD and takes a longer time to start up. Normally, I don't leave any high-performance apps open during the night, it's normally only Firefox, Skype, and Word that are left open in sleep mode. Does anyone have a solution to this problem?
Cheers

I've read other forums on similar issues, but I can't seem to find one that matches mine exactly. System: Y410p with1tb hdd24gb ssdintel i7-47008gb ram64x windows 8.1 (came installed) Problem:When I put the computer into sleep mode, it goes into sleep mode without issue. It has stayed in sleep mode for a maximum of 8 hours, but usually before it hits this long the system will turn on. It seems to run random processes and overclock the processor as the computer gets very hot. It will do this until the battery dies, or if plugged in, indefinitely. While it is doing this I have opened the lid, pressed every key, including power, with no response. Once, and only once, upon pressing the space bar, it had actually come to the unlock screen as though it truly was in sleep (except it was still overheating and on). Otherwise my only option is hard shut down. I've just gone around it for a while now by shutting down every time and not using sleep. But today I had put it in sleep, and placed it in my backpack where it nearly cooked itself to death. I have tried:I have checked the wake_armed, which currently displayes NONEI have checked last_wakeand I have fiddled with hybrid shutdown, but not in any way that I think would have helped.

Answer:Sleep Mode turns on, kills battery, overheats laptop

I'm having exactly the same issue and I just bought this laptop a few months ago.  Before now it was doing this and was annoying but today in the airport it got so hot in my backpack it was burning my back while boarding the plane.  I was getting very unwanted attention trying to figure out why my laptop was burning hot as other passengers became worried.  After I shut it down, the temperature cooled back down. Lenovo G510intel i7-47008gb ram64x windows 8.1 (came installed)

It works on an external display, but can't display anything on the laptop screen. Any suggestions on how to fix this?

Hello Lenovo users, The sleep mode seems draining a lot a battery. According to my tests, only the screen is turned off. The steps to reproduce the issue0 - start a youtube video 1 - close the lid -> the video is paused(no more sound)2 - open the lid -> the video is resumed3 - close the lid again -> the video is suspended for about 5 seconds before being resumed.... The computer drains about 2 watts in sleep mode : it seems close to the idle battery draining.I really suspect that the computer does only turn the screen off.A T420 laptop drains about 1 watts in sleep mode. In hibernation, the battery draining is about 1 watt. Is there any known bios issue ?

Dear All,I have Lenovo Thinkpad T460S purchased almost a year ago. Today I suddenly faced problem in charging battery. Charger is plugged in and battery icon is showing "plugged in, charging" but actually it is charging very slowly. Normally battery is charged in one hour or so but today it took more than one hours to reach only 24% or so. Furthermore, soon after plugging in, battery icon shows "filling in process" for few seconds then stopped i.e no filling in process. Furthermore, after whole night charging, battery is now 94% charged, battery 2: 100% charged, fully charged; battery 1: 0% charged, not charging (please attached images). Please guide how to get rid of this problem?Thanking in advance. Shahid

I have a Flex 3 that is only 4 months old and notice that even when the laptop is totally off (powered down, no lights on, not hibernate or sleep) after a day or two the batter charge upon bootup has gone down significantly. I am talking a reduction of say 40%. I am under warranty and I have to run this "Battery gauge reset" routine and do a few other checks before they replace the battery.  Although I can't imagine how looking at windows power options can impact what the battery draw is while the unit is OFF and windows is not running....but guess they have to go through their script. Anyway my question is on this Battery Gauge reset.  I have read things where this takes all night or something and people have to turn sleep mode off on their laptop? That is not in the official instructions so for those that have had this issue or run the reset do you just "press the button" or do I need to make sure the laptop stays awake. Also, what is it actually doing?? Is this type of battery drain a known issue?  To me it sure seems like just a bad battery....Thanks,BJBBJB

We have two new Latitude 5289's and when in sleep mode the battery is drained abnormal. It happens for both of these new laptops.
The battery seems to be drained even faster than when you are using the laptop.
Does anybody have the same experience or a fix?

Cheers

Answer:Extreme battery drain -sleep mode- Dell Latitude 5289

Hi KBolderman,Thanks for posting. In sleep mode the computer still uses power and will drain the battery if not connected to the charger.  It's really not a good idea to leave a computer in sleep mode for long periods of time because it does drain the battery.  Here is some information you may find helpful: http://dell.to/2swLXIk

I have my lenovo x230 laptop set to sleep when I close the lid. When I close the lid the "sleep" icon on the back of the screen lights up. But the batter will not last through the night on sleep mode. Within five hours or so, the battery is completely drained and I have to plug in and boot up the system. I've never seen such poor batter performance during sleep mode on any other laptop I've ever owned.  Another thread in this forum blames the USB port that allows you to charge mobile phones/etc. during low-power states and recommends disabling the "always power on" option fo this USB port in the Bios settings. I've done so, be it doesn't seem to have helped. At least my laptop still will not make it through the night in sleep mode.  At this point, it seems my ownly option is to use sleep mode only when the laptop is plugged in and hibernation mode when on batter power, which is disappointing. I've never had to worry about this in the past with other laptops.  Perhaps/probably related is the fact that the lenovo ThinkVantage Power Manager (v. 7.16) hangs at the splash screen when I try to open it, so I've been trying to manage the power through the windows control panel power settings.

I recently purchased a Thinkpad X120e (0596) and am genneraly very happy with it however when it goes to sleep the screen does not wake up when the laptop does. when i wake it up i hear the fan spin up but the the screen remans powered off. ive tried waiting several minutes and it still doesnt wake up, ive also tried holding the power button for several (more than 5 ) seconds to force it to power off fully then start it again and the screen still doesnt wake up. the only way i can get it to work again is to make sure to unplug it and remove the battery for several seconds then i can get it to boot with the normaly expected complaints from windows after an abnormal shutdown.I have the latest updates from lenovo and microsoft installed including the latest firmware. I like the laptop so i would rather report the problem and provide any information neccisary to find a resolution than have to return it. Ive seen this problem with other laptops before and know its probably a  bug in the firmware thats not waking up the GPU is ther any tool i can use to provide the debuging info or any more direct way for me to report the bug I tried calling customer support and they told me they told me my only option was to return it and they could not report or record the issue.

Answer:x120e 0596 screen wont wake up after sleep mode until unplug it and remove the battery

I'm experiencing a similar issue. After resuming from suspend state, the screen won't turn on sporadically (in about 50% of cases). However, after hard-resetting by pressing the power button for 5 seconds and turning it back on, the screen would also turn back on. No need to remove the battery. I'm on Ubuntu 11.10 and, to my knowledge, it doesn't seem to be an issue with the O/S.

HiI am trying to get support to fix my laptop, a Lenovo T430S. When I put my laptop to sleep, it crashes and doesn't recover from the sleep mode. I have updated most of the drivers involved with network, power management, and USB. I have copy and pasted the BSOD crash report - which shows TCPIP.SYS a isnd NTOSKRNL.EXE involved in a Drive_Power_State_Failure. I feel that some of the drivers are corrupted. Is there a way to restore the drivers to original settings without deleting files such as documents and programs? I do not have a restore point prior to this malfunction. So I have backup my computer with  windows backup software. Can I do a system restore (to original setting) and just recover my files from the backup? 101015-45287-01.dmp 10/10/2015 4:07:59 PM DRIVER_POWER_STATE_FAILURE 0x0000009f 00000000`00000003 fffffa80`071d7a10 fffff800`00b9a3d8 fffffa80`0dcdf680 tcpip.sys tcpip.sys+186c10 x64 ntoskrnl.exe+735c0 C:\Windows\Minidump\101015-45287-01.dmp 4 15 7601 1,225,960 Thanks in advance!Sincerely,Jason

My brand new HP Pavilion x360 will only charge when the lid is closed or the computer is in sleep mode. I have tried changing any relevant power settings and have already consulted multiple friends. I'm wondering if there's a hidden setting I have yet to discover or if my battery is busted. The computer is under warantee so if I have to I can take it back to bestbuy and have it replaced, but if there's a dyi method that I've yet to try I would like to get all those out of the way as best buy is rather far away from my house.

So lately I've been having an issue with my laptop.  The charger is plugged in but the computer doesn't seem to recognize it unless I shift the laptop to a certain position.  This seems to have little to do with the position of the AC plug in the DC port at all as it's not the same positions that will actually get the computer to recognize the charger is plugged in. I don't think this has anything to do with the battery itself as removing the battery does not make the connection more consistent.  The computer will still not recognize the AC adapter is plugged in.  I had the same problem with my old laptop, a V570. It will also briefly lose connection and restore it before my display can process it.  I know this by the CPU throttle in the BIOS (which I can't access to turn off because of the version of BIOS used) will randomly slow my computer down and won't restore to full speed when the charger is making connection again. What just happened lately which is making me wonder about this more is that my laptop stopped recognizing the charger as being plugged in in the tray icon but the charger light on my laptop started flashing orange.  The blue power light was also flashing. Sometimes when I restart my computer to reset the CPU throttle, I will get a pop-up message from the Battery Management Software stating, "Adapter has limited support: performance will be affected ..." Full specs available on the purchase page here. &n... Good day, I bought my Lenovo G580H 1 week before, and before few days i saw, that the battery is not charging. First time the battery was on 61%, later when i was watching the film without AC adapter and after it pluged the AC adapter i saw, that the battery is on 7% and not charging. So no it's not charging too and when you want to watch a film or something without ac adapter laptop is truns off autmatically. So for what i should be angry? For Lenovo or for Windows? Thanks for your help, and sorry for my bad language .Regards from Lithuania.

I have a Thinkpad X1 Carbon (Gen3) Model 20BS touchscreen  running Windows 7 64 bit. The battery is not charging -- it's in a perpetual state of "plugged in not charging"  and even when plugged in, it?s losing appr 1 percent per day (down to 31%). This has happened a few times over the past 3-4 months since I got the machine, but I've managed to find things that "fixed" it (at least temporarily): - Resetting the power gauge worked once - Changing the custom battery charge threshold worked a few times - Plugging in the power cord at different stages of reboot seemed to fix it once (although not sure why / how) Based on previous thread posts, I've uninstalled and reinstalled Power Manager and then tried to run Battery Gauge Reset, but to no avail. And the reset only appears to run for about 30 sec before the system tray icon switches back to normal. Thanks in advance. Karl

I have a brand new Yoga 2 11.  The laptop is great but i can't figure out how to power at least 1 of the USB ports when i have the lid closed.  I would like to charge my cell phone from my laptop.  I would like to have the USB port powered if the laptop is plugged in or operating solely on battery power.  My previous laptop had a bios setting but i have checked the bios and there is no option.  I have also checked Lenovo Energy Monitor and there is no feature there either.

Hi,
I've had this problem intermittently on my laptop for the past 2 years however it has been occuring more often recently.

Basically sometimes when I click the sleep button on Windows 7, the screen fades to black as usual. However the fan keeps running (sounds like when it's on full load) and the power button light stays on endlessly. I always have to force shut it down and restart it.

What can be the issue?
Thanks.

Answer:Laptop freezes between entering sleep mode to being in sleep mode

Hi joseph10444.

Such a situation may occur when some driver (mostly the PnP device drivers depending on the ACPI configuration) fail to response within a stipulated time period during the power state change.

Let us see some data. Upload your MSINFO32.nfo file.
Click on the start button
Type "msinfo32" (without quotes) in the search bar of the start menu, click the resulting link. It will open the System Information window.
File>Save. In the "File Name" filed, put "MSINFO32" (without Quote), give the save location to desktop, and click the "save" button.
Give the time for processing, it will save a .nfo file on your desktop.
Zip it, and upload it following the instruction.
Upload the list of all the third party drivers Using NirSoft DriverView :
Download and execute Driverview
View > Hide Microsoft Drivers
Edit > Select all
File > Save Selected Items
In the Save dialog, Set the path to desktop, Put "Driverview" in the name field, and save.
Zip the .txt file and upload it.
Those files will give us a closer look to the issue.

Hey, I really need help. I'm having problems with my laptop. It's a dell inspiron 7559 and was bought around January. Recently I have seen that the battery has no longer been as hot as it used to be when I first started using it. Along with the sleeve on the tip of the screen power adapter (below the part where the adapter lights up) has started to come off, exposing the wires. The battery has continually dropped down its percentage rate ever since I bought it, and it won't go back up. It is currently at 0% battery life and it says when you highlight over the battery icon ( plugged in, not charging). It also happens to show the BIO setup when I start the computer and shows that the batteries wattage and type cannot be determined. In the BIOS setup, the ac adapter type is unknown. The battery has not been through any harsh conditions along with the laptop. I have tried removing the battery, starting up the computer with the ac adapter (which is 130 watts), then adding the battery back, and ac adapter, then turning it on, but it had no effects. If I remove my ac adapter while my computer is on ,it instantly turns off. If someone can support me with this issue, it would be gladly appreciated. Thanks.

Answer:Laptop battery not charging, battery not identified, 0% battery life

It sounds likely the charge circuit on the mainboard is damaged.  Contact Dell to have the mainboard replaced under warranty.
