Inspiron 5547 - just 1 year 4 months - Broken screen hinge

Question: Inspiron 5547 - just 1 year 4 months - Broken screen hinge

Don't buy this laptop! This slim laptop is thin and light but not well built. My wife is a careful user and she uses this laptop to pay the bills. Has anyone ever ordered a replacement base from Dell?

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

I have a 6 month old Inspiron 5558 that won't close properly due to a bad hinge on the right side. Spent an hour with support, only to tell me that this is not covered under warranty, even though there is still another 6 months left under Mfg warranty. The hinge is cracked, which in turn has cracked the cover of the LCD. In order to close the laptop, we have to squeeze the hinge with the screen, and slowly close. From reading through posts, it appears that Dell has ongoing issues with hinges. I totally understand and would expect a two year old device not to be covered, but at 6 months? And a broken hinge is not covered? Anyone have any thoughts?

Answer:Inspiron 5558 - 6 Months Old - BROKEN HINGE

Nope. Nothing. I had many calls with support and they still insisted that it's normal wear and tear on the machine. I purchased through Costco, and they tried calling support and received the same answer. Long story short, I will never purchase a Dell device again. Ever.

It was a bitter experience with Dell. I have been using my laptop with utmost care and never hit anywhere or physically damaged, as per your words.

Dell - why aren't you helping your customers with this issue! Not acceptable for a 20 year loyal customer!  I'm out of warranty by 30 days, but I understand it was not ever covered under warranty. NOT GOOD.  You know this is a common issue, why are you ignoring us. I was just told the repair would cost be $269 and I need a new LCD. WHAT!!!!!  If you do not repair this for free I will be sure to pursue further action. Please help! Thank you.

I didn't quite find an answer, so I'm asking here. Has Dell compensated anyone for the design flaw with the Inspiron 15 5547 regarding the hinges? I opened my laptop this morning, and lo and behold, my palm rest is cracked. This will be the fourth one that has cracked. Three replaced by Dell under warranty, and the last by myself as my warranty expired.

At this point, I see no reason to replace the palm rest again, as it's just going to break again. At what point do you stop dumping money into this thing?

Answer:Inspiron 15 5547 Hinge problem

Unfortunately the palm rest is crack again as I know this is very frustrated for you. However, Dell list a laptop Hinge policy at the top of the forum. It should answer your question.

I bought my laptop about an year back but from the past 6 months it is making click sound whenever i open or close it. I contacted the dell customer service centre but they said that it is not covered under warranty. I haven't yet rectified the problem and reading other posts, I am scared it will pop open at the right hinge. Please help as my product is now not covered under warranty.

I just got off the phone after a very frustrating 45 min conversation with customer support so I apologize for my tone.
My Inspiron 5547 has a badly broken right hinge that is damaging the body of the computer. I know this is a manufacturing issue because there are about 100 other complaints about this EXACT issue on this support forum. Dell has not listed this issue as a manufacturing error and, as far as I know, no 5547 owners received any notice that this would be a problem. My guess is Dell did the math and figured that it would be less expensive to ignore the problem than it would be to order a recall.
My issue started about 6 months after I purchased my computer. I admit, I'm way past warranty now, but this is so obviously Dell's fault that I find it hard to care. Ordinarily I wouldn't make a stink but I don't think it's fair to offload a defective product in the hopes that your customers won't notice.
The representatives I spoke to said that the repairs would cost $430 (including shipping, handling, parts etc.), which is infuriating. I can't imagine how many people have paid that fee thinking that THEY were the problem. I hope Dell is happy with that stolen cash.
So here's the deal: If someone from Dell helps me then I'll continue buying Dell products. If not, I won't buy one ever again. And by the way, I'm 25 and a new customer, this is my first Dell computer (what's that old saying? "You only get one chance to make... Read more

I bought Inspiron 15 less than a year ago and was happy with it. The only thing that bothered me was a somewhat loose hinge construction. I handle my all my tech very carefully including that laptop. So I thought I'll just live with that.
But eventually that issue lead to a crack... And now it's difficult to open the lid. If you look at pictures poor assembly is obvious - screw's head just goes out thru the hole. When one opens heavy touch screen it is the point of most hard tensions and thin plastic along with small screw won't stand out.
I've google it and it appears Dell has a very long history of hinge issues on Inspiron and other models too. Like

and alike...
The Dell Warranty support team was rude enough saying Dell never had any design flaws or manufacturing issues. It's just normal wear and tear (Really? Inspiron designed to last for a few months?).
Any suggestions on how to proceed?
Thank you!

I am having the same issue, right side also! Had the laptop for 8 months, same model! So frustrating they want to charge $160 to fix it, not covered under warranty. If it isn't a defect why are so many having the same issue with the right hinge!

I bought an Inspiron 15 5547 8 months back and is currently out of warranty . It had been working just fine untill recently, all of a sudden  I am hearing a cracking sound from the right hinge every time I open and close the laptop. Despite numerous calls to the customer care department there has been no proper response. Looks like numerous people have been suffering from the same problem, which clearly reflects on the inferior designing/ components used. It is also very disturbing that a trusted brand like Dell has let down on it's customers . It would be deeply appreciated if the laptop is replaced.
Has anyone managed to get this problem sorted?

Hi,
I own a Dell Inspiron 5547. I have purchased a Dell notebook for my wife as well and my choice for the company notebook was also Dell. This was because I have trusted the quality and the 3 year warranty.Parts Only warranty 11/4/14 - 11/4/15Carry-in Service/Return to Depot warranty 11/4/14 - 11/4/17
A long time ago, a screw fell out from the notebook and there was no way to put it back, it always came out. Please note that I have never ever tried to do any modifications/repairs on the notebook. As I could not afford to put it into the service for 2 weeks, I've tried to open and close it always with maximum care. Still, it broke eventually and I needed to go to the local Hungarian warranty partner, where I was told that Dell won't cover the issue and I got an offer over USD 150 for repair.
I admit that with turning in the notebook, the damages would have been smaller, but still, the place for the screw would have needed a change and also the plastic and other parts were not as strong as required. I've googled Dell hinge issues and it seems to be a common issue.
In order to keep my trust in Dell, I would like at least a partial guarantee. Else, due to the lack of trust I will need to look for another brand when I will need to replace laptops. This is something I would not like.
Regards,
Aron

I too have had the exact same issue with the Dell Inspiron 5547 6 months after buying it. It was under warranty so Dell fixed it. 8 months later the exact same problem occurs but now it is out of warranty and Dell wants $160.00 to fix it. Dell can only tell me to send it in and they will fix it for the $160.00 fee. They won't listen that the issue is identical to the one experienced while the product was under warranty and imply the problem is my fault and not an inherent design problem. The answer from them is I should have extended the warranty and this can't be a design issue as they have not received complaints about it. This forum validates complaints exist. As a previous Dell customer for the last 14 years I have purchased my last Dell. They don't stand behind their products and prefer to shift the blame to the customer. I was in the market for a new laptop and guess what I'm buying an Apple. All because a company I stood behind for years won't stand up for their customers. Now for the other 3 Dell laptops in my house, those too will be replaced by a more reputable company that actually understands customer service and is willing to fix their design flaws if they occur.

A friend and I purchased Dell Inspiron 15 5547 in August 2015 together. Within 5 months my friend's laptop's hinge got broken. Since it was in warranty Dell replaced it in 2 weeks. I didn't face any issue then. But since past few months I noticed a click sound when opening or closing the laptop. It didn't take time to figure out the right hinge of the laptop was defective and because of that the area near power button started popping out. I read several posts on similar issues with this laptop and was wondering if Dell will replace and fix it because of the manufacturing defect. The laptop is about 2 years old now. I'm currently using a paper clip to keep the things in place and not break it.

My daughter went to use her laptop last night for homework, and by just opening the screen, the right hinge broke away from the laptop.  In research this issue, I've many people have had the exact same issue.  This laptop has not been dropped or abused.  When a hinge breaks under very light use - she uses it about 5 times a month - there is a problem with this design.  In every case I've seen - it's a hinge issue with the right one.  I called Dell, but they said it would be a cost to repair it.  This is crazy - it's clearly a defective design!!!!
There is a pretty long thread here, but it's closed:http://en.community.dell.com/support-forums/laptop/f/3518/t/19622428?pi41097=4

Answer:Dell needs to have a recall on the Inspiron 5547 Right Hinge Issue

It actually isn't.  Most people are right-handed and raise the lid single-handed (instead of using both hands, or in the center as it's designed to be raised).  That puts torque on a part not designed to handle it -- which is why the hinge mount will crack.

I bought this laptop in November 2014. For the last few days I was hearing a click sound whenever I open the laptop. And today also I heard the click sound but while closing the laptop I found the right corner edge is popped open. I contacted Dell Support for this issue and explained them what happened. They told me that this is a damage happened on the laptop and I am not covered by accidental damage coverage. So I have to pay for this one to be fixed. I explained them that I’m using this laptop as everyone else does like opening a laptop to work on it and closing it when am done with my work. But no use, I was told this is beyond warranty I have to pay $160 and wait at least 12 working days to get it fixed.
As this problem has been faced by many customers and this is a manufacturing defect basically, dell should repair it for free.

Answer:Inspiron 5547 laptop right side hinge problem

I just spent $60 for a new upper and lower 5547 case which I will install myself; being that the laptop is out of warranty and I'm sort of adept at such things.  The problem is that of poor case design.  The hinge on the left side of the screen has a "leg" extending towards the front of the laptop that helps absorb the torque of the lid opening and closing.  The right side hinge has no such "leg" so that the screws that are embedded into the friction nuts in the plastic case work loose over time  and cause the hinge to detach from the body of the laptop.  Once detached, the right hinge acts as a pry-bar to open up the right side of the case just behind the ethernet port.  The hinges take quite a bit of force to move.  In preparation for the new case, I have loosened the nut at the ends of the hinge axles and cleaned and lubricated the hinges to allow for easier action while opening and closing the LCD lid.  This may be an ongoing maintenance issue with these hinges, as the mechanism is open to dust contamination causing increased torque over time in opening and closing the lid.  We'll see how this goes.

I am too facing the same issue of the hinge on my inspiron 5547 when i checked with the dell team they say  its not covered under my warranty.
When i further analysed the issue the problem is as follows
1. The hinges are strong made of steel  but the base which fixes them to the front panel are plastics.
2.The nuts are moulded into plastic and fixed with screws which makes them break after our normal day to day usage.
3.I assume this has been overseen in the design review .
Can any one please advise how you got this fixed ?

It is bad enough that Dell makes a product with a defect affecting many of their unuts (bad hinge design/manufacture), but then makes a statement that part is specifically not covered under any of their warranties.
C/mon Dell.  You created the problem, man-up to it.

To whom it may concern, I am writing this message to inform of you of my displeasure with one of your products. I purchased a HP Envy M6 in August of 2015 at around $700. Last night I went to open my laptop and I heard a loud snap. The noise that was heard was my hinge breaking as well as it snapping the plastic from the bottom base cover. I have now had three HP laptops and all three broke the same way. After doing some research online I found out that this is a common thing for HP laptops, specifically the Envy models. I even noticed that there was a class action lawsuit against HP for their hinges specifically. I went around to repair shops to get a quote on how much it would to be fix and was quoted from $150-$200.I was shocked at the amount quoted as I already had put a large amount of money into the purchase of the product and the product being relatively new. It is unfair to your consumers to have high priced top of the line products break on them on a regular basis. I am inquiring with your company to see if there is anything you can do to help rectify the situation. If nothing can be done I will stay away from all HP products permanently. Please feel to reply with any questions or comments you have about this incident. Thank you in advance for the timely response.

Answer:Broken hinge after only 18 months of ownership

I have brought your issue to the attention of an appropriate team within HP. They will likely request information from you in order to look up your case details or product serial number. Please look for a private message from an identified HP contact. Additionally, keep in mind not to publicly post personal information (serial numbers and case details).

I purchased a Inspiron 15-547 and now have broken plastic around the right hinge. This is said to be a known issue with this specific laptop yet Dell is telling me I have to pay for the repair? In the advertisement they claim that it was tested for 20,000 openings and closings. Are you kidding me? I haven't even opened and closed it for 10,000 times and it is this bad. SAD! This is not something I expect form a company like Dell.

How it is described to customers:

Excessive with the zeroes in the number of tests maybe! Mine is not the only case where this has happened there are many others with the same complaint. I'm wondering why Dell did not recall this laptop so I would not have purchased it in the first place.

Hi,
i had purchased my dell 5547 from amazon.com, when i opened my laptop lid i heard a pop sound, however i didnt notice anything that time, however now i see that the right side hinge has come off and after joining this forum i see that this is a recurrent issue with the dell 5547 laptop, (refering to the thread Inspiron 5547 laptop pops open at the right side joint while closing),
I called up the tech support and they want $105 to fix the issue, since its a manufacturing defect, why should we bear this cost,
the solution to this problem has been to report to BBB.org, is this is what is expected or this issue will be sorted out here before i start posting my complaints at BBB.org.

I also have this same problem with my 5547 and given the amount of threads with the same problem I think Dell should address it and correct this manufacturing error.

Hi.  After looking over some of the post, it looks like hinges are a problem for Lenovo.  My U450P is less than 4 months old and the hinge popped as I was trying to close it one evening last week.  (No I didn't drop it and have only taken out of the house 2-3 times.)  I didn't continue to try and close the lid, because it looked like it was pulling the top corner apart. Anyway after calling support and then driving an hour away to nearest FedEx Express, I got a call today - it will cost me $180 to repair.  Of course I had to close it to put it in the shipping box, and as it closed the broken hinge did pull apart the top slightly.  They consider that accidental damage and assume I dropped it. I was also admonished for not getting the extra warranty coverage.  Shouldn't a computer last more than 3 1/2 months without having to pay for extra warranties!!!  It seems from reading these boards that Lenovo hinges are an issue.  I certainly had no problems with previous laptops. So - am I just stuck, or has anyone found help with their hinge situations. thanks!

I've looked around for instructions and the Youtube videos put up by a vendor show complete disassembly of the notebook to separate the LCD and LCD Assembly from the notebook base but then stops. Those videos appear to be a bit generic and I don't think are for this exact model and the hinge area looks different not to mention they do not even go into opening the LCD over to access the LCD itself.
In any case can the LCD bezel just be separated in order to access the panel mounting screws then the cable on the rear of the LCD? Can anyone comment on the steps for doing this repair?
I've replaced a number of notebook screens but I have NEVER taken a notebook apart to the level that was shown in those videos I found. At most I've had to remove part of the keyboard cover in order to gain better access to the bezel, never a full tear down though.
In my case my son broke the digitizer, the LCD itself is fine, however I don't see just a digitizer replacement for this LCD, appears to be a single part.

I was getting 8 beeps on my Inspiron 15 5547. I opened it up and reseated the lad cable. When I put it back, no more beeps but the screen was still dead. The screen backlight comes on (at least I can see the screen do something when I hit the power button on/off.
I tried to enter the boot menu using f12 and f2. Never saw anything.
I tried to perform the built-in self test using D+pwr and fn at startup. No result. Still blank.
I hooked up my hdmi cable and tried to toggle to external tv using fn+f1 and fn+f8. No response.
If I leave it plugged in the fan turns on and runs for a while.
Is there any way to tell if this is a screen problem or an issue with the graphics controller?
Any ideas appreciated!

Answer:Inspiron 15 5547 blank screen

if you cannot get an external image or one on the LCD panel, chances are it's the GPU that has failed - meaning a replacement mainboard is required.

Hello,
I bought my Dell Inspiron 5548 in November 2015. My right hinge is making strange noises and finally it broke off. I want to know how could I get this fixed. I haven't misused it or dropped it at any point of time. since it is not even one complete year, im assuming my laptop is covered under the warranty. probably this is not the first complain Dell is receiving in this model since I saw previous posts complaining of the same problem.

Here I'm attaching the photo of the broken hinge as well as the bill that was given to me when i purchased my laptop.
Let me know whether i should post my service tag/express service code here.

I turned my laptop on today and there is a black border meaning that the screen is not being used completely, like it was yesterday. I measured the part of the screen being used and it measured 15.6" and it is advertised as that, but I am 100% sure that this black border was not here yesterday, or ever before. As seen in this Inspiron 5547 video at 2:19, the entire screen is being used and there is no black border  however on my 5547 there is a clearly visible black border which i used my ceiling fan light to show exactly where it is and how thick it is. This is in no way my fault and is apparently a known issue with this model, yet I am still expected to pay for a screen replacement. This will not be happening and I will gladly switch to a different brand(after being a 10+ year dell customer) if I must do so.

The left side hinge on my touch enables Inspiron 15 (5558) is broken.  When I opened the device on my desk, it made a cracking sound and the case-lid seemed to seperate from the screen assembly. According to the tag on the bottom, it's under warranty until December 20th this year.  How do I go about getting this repaired?  I can not move the screen at this point.  I have it in an open position, but if I'm very gentle and use many hands, I could get it closed.  Any help would be appreciated.

Hi all,
Laptop: Dell Inspiron 15 i5558-5717SLV Signature Edition
Purchase date: 12/09/2015
I am so glad to see to see that I am not the only one who has a hinge cover broken as I was beginning to think that I might have accidentally bumped the laptop somewhere (I am extremely cautious electronics user and none of the electronics products I used had physical damage in past.).   As you can see in picture, left side hinge cover is broken which causes the display screen to come off when I try to close the lid.  Getting hold of the customer representative is an ordeal itself but when I finally could get hold of the guy, he told me that this damage is not covered under the one-year warranty and I will have to pay $150/- in order for this laptop to get looked at by dell professional plus have to bear the cost of the new part.
Apart from this problem, touchpad is too sensitive to touch of my palm and cursor goes all over the place when I type. I have tried to change touchpad settings from control panel and uninstall the touchpad drivers but it has not helped.
Overall I think this laptop is of low quality. Now I understand that Inspiron products can’t be compared with Vostro or Latitude products, but this laptop is bad for even Inspiron standards. My four-year-old Inspiron N4110 is way better than this laptop and still working fine. I am sorry to say this but this has been one of the worst products I have ever used.

We purchased this laptop Jan. 2015.  It is currently almost out of warranty. We purchased online from Costco. I called Costco Concierge services and they connected me with Dell Warranty Dept.  I explained the issue of the screw popping out and the hinge now being broken. Of course the first thing they asked was if it has ever been dropped. NO! IT HAS NEVER BEEN DROPPED! We cannot open the screen more than a 90 degree angle. In some cases when we do, the computer shuts itself down and reboots.  This is obviously a defect in the hardware and workmanship and design of this laptop. As I just spoke with Dell and they are sending me a box to ship the laptop back in. It will take 7-10 business days to fix.  This is a work computer so of course we cannot be without a computer for that long. We will have to buy another computer to use during this time and then give to another employee once the broken one is fixed. For now, they have not said we need to pay anything to fix it as it is still under its one year warranty. But I will let you know if something else occurs. I am glad this forum is here because I would never have known others have had this problem.  Dell really should recall this product or at least give people new computers when they call with this issue. This is such a hassle.  I will post back on here what the resolution outcome is.  Also, they let me know that if it happens again once it is fixed, it will no longer be under warranty. We ... This laptop had click sound going on when closing and opening lid. It had this from day one and i assumed it is new laptop and will get fine after few uses. As i used this laptop rarely i did not mind this issue until recently i opened the lid and heard click and found right side corner hinge pop out. Now my laptop is unusable and needs the replacement. I used this laptop with care and am sure this was manufacturing defect. This needs to be replaced for free.
I tried to reach DELL support few times but was put on wait for hours and had to give UP. Now when i call them they say your warranty is expired and you have to pay for this replacement.
I don't buy this . THIS IS MANUFACTURING DEFECT. 100's of users experienced the same. DELL has to OWN responsibility and fix it . This makes CUSTOMERS DAY.
This breaks customer trust on DELL. I see this is getting more and more into Fabric of DELL. So many customers are complaining about DELL
Please help and fix issues that is your liability and do not penalize customers

Hi there - I have an Aspire V5 touchscreen - when I went to close the lid, the screen cracked and I spotted that the left hinge has come apart (risen and cracked the screen). Now the laptop wont work (touch screen is flashing, mouse doesnt work - exactly the same issue as the other posts on this forum). I see on this forum and google search that this is fairly common with Acer laptops (going back to 2010) and wondering why this wasnt fixed. Has there been a recall on this, does anyone know?  I see from a google search that HP fixed a design flaw on their laptops to stop this from happening once it was reported, several years ago (2008) (I wish I had known about this problem before I purchased). If you google that you'll get the information. I've only had my laptop a couple of years. I take excellent care of my laptops, and never had this issue. (I dont travel with it, and dont close the lid often - it sits stationary on my desk and is only 2 years old).   I've sent emails out to my friends working in technology this afternoon - and so far no one has ever had this issue although no one has Acer.  Its a huge inconvenience as I use this laptop for work.  So I'm just waiting to hear back from Acer.Any suggestions on getting this fixed or replaced asap?

Hello,I am having issues with my Dell 5547 laptop. There is a roughly 1cm border all around the screen which wasn't there before and I noticed it now as my taskbar is adjusted 1cm up but when I put google chrome in full screen it sort of chops the top bar down a bit.
I noticed through google searches other people have had similar issues with Dell laptops however I can't seem to find a solution because every time I try to turn off the "maintain display scaling" it won't let me turn it off.

Answer:Dell Inspiron 5547 Black Border around screen

The product in the product video has the same black border. It can not be "'fixed''Some of the photos do not seem to have this which is pretty poor form, but the screen size and resolution are as promised.Personally, I would've liked a smaller laptop overall, but if it had to be this size, then I would rather small bezels and a black border, than big slabs of plastic on all sides. It makes it look better when its off and I don't notice it that much.I've also heard people say that this is to do with the touch functionality?? Maybe it gives you a better ability to swipe in from the sides... I don't know.Still, there is nothing wrong with your laptop. If this is a deal breaker for you, you might have a decent argument under consumer laws to get a refund. They really can't show pictures that cover this up and make the screen seem bigger than it is. But the video was there, and the specs are all honest.

The touchscreen on the laptop is completely black.  The computer is turning on and the backlight to the keyboard is functioning, as well as the fan.  At times I can get a series of 8 beeps that can be heard.  I referenced this and understand that code indicates LCD failure.  I connected the laptop to an external monitor via HDMI cable and it is black as well.  I did remove the battery for a few minutes and then reinstalled it.  I also check the LCD cable connection, unplugged it, and plugged it back in.  No change.  What could be causing this problem?
Thank you for any help!

I am running Windows 8.1 - the same o/s that came with my Inspiron 15-5547.
I move the computer between work and home. When I put  to sleep, and unplug it from power, then next time I turn on the computer, about 50% of the time it resumes correctly.
However, the other 50% of the time, I turn on the computer and it is displaying the round Dell logo on a black screen (like BIOS startup).  But the computer remains frozen on the screen and Windows does not load.
I need to hold down the power button to shut down, and then I wait a few seconds, and turn the computer back on.
At this point, the computer will usually load Windows correctly.  A few times I still get the frozen Dell screen and then just power off/on again.
Does anyone have any tips to fix this?  I am afraid that one day, Windows just won't load at all and then I'll be stuck.
Thanks,
Mike

Answer:Inspiron 15-5547 sometimes does not restart from sleep and gets stuck on Dell Logo screen

Always turn the computer completely off (shutdown) before moving. Leaving a computer Sleeping and then transporting it can damage the computer. Laptops use battery power when sleeping. They can overheat or worse when transported while in Sleep mode.
Make sure you sometimes use the laptop on battery power alone--without the adapter. Batteries last longer when they are regularly used on battery and recharged regularly.

I have an Inspiron 5547, which was bought on October 2014. I had no problems with my laptop until now. I won a Samsung EVO 850 GB SSD, in a lottery, and decided to change my disk with the SSD. The installation went fine and everything works, except that I do not have the same Dell Logo on the BIOS splash screen as the old one. The new one is much bigger and of lower resolution, like it is in safe mode. How can I change the logo back to the old one, which was smaller in dimension and with better resolution?

Same exact failure.  Dell wants $160 to fix it.  No damage, just over a year old.  Clearly a design defect. I'm not paying $160 to fix some plastic that's just going to break the next time I open the laptop.  I don't think I'll be buying another Dell laptop either.

I am laptop user since 12 years. July, 30th I bought my Portege Z930, thinking it was my best decision in many years.
Less than a month later, when opening the screen during a flight, it?s simply broken the screen, making it impossible to use any more.

After sending it to official service in Spain, I was told that it was my fault and for a bad use, so I had to pay more than 300? (almost 400$). I claimed to customer support, explaining them about their excessive flexible top and rigid screen, and nothing new.
It was only my fault.

Last Octobers, 11th again when opening my top, this time using a tape label attached by myself, in order to avoid blending the screen, it scratched again.

I can`t afford this is only my fault but it is a real design problem, to get the lightest ultrabook in market.

If anyone may give me support for this serious problem, it will be very appreciated

Answer:Portege Z930-10E - broken screen twice in 3 months only

Hi

This is really amazing story and I believe you are the first one who reports about something like this.
Portege Z930 is for a while on the market and I never heard about such issues.
Please don?t understand me wrong but it is really strange that this happen already three times.

I saw this machine and the whole construction seems pretty stabile to me. When you open the display I hope your fingers are placed in the middle of the display cover and not by the side. The pressure on display cover hinges must be the same. If you hold the display on one side only I can imagine that something like this can happen but it shouldn?t.

Portege series is one of the best Toshiba?s business notebooks so I believe Toshiba designer and technicians take it very seriously and I cannot imagine that they make such ?design? mistake.

I still have old Portege 2000 and it was lightest notebook at this time with very sensible display and display cover hinges but there is no problem at all.

We can discuss here for days and I really hope that someone with the same Portege can post own experiences but all this you must try to clarify with Toshiba. Be careful when you open it and hold the display in the middle only.

Good luck.

I got to school this morning, flipped open my almost brand new T430 screen and just saw vertical lines across the whole screen! Right now I am using the computer with an external monitor, which  seems to work, but the laptop display itself is not working. What happened? It was perfectly fine last night! Has this happened to anyone else????? With the fan noise and other update issues I've had with this machine so far, this will most likely be the first and last Lenovo I ever buy.

Seems like a panel defect. It happens. I'd contact Lenovo support to get the panel replaced. Perhaps they can look at the fan issues at the same time.

Hi I was wondering how I can get my right screen hinge fixed? I can't close the lid without the borders of the screen becoming more detached than it already is. I'm out of warranty and live in Sydney, I was wondering what are my options? The left part is fine and I can clearly see the connectors running through  (right at the bottom of screen frame)but for my left its broken on one side. So replacing just the screen won't fix the problem.Thanks. EDIT: Just called Lenovo support, they told me it would cost around $450 to get it fixed lol, which is 90% of how much I bought this unit for. Are there any other alternatives?

The hinge on my computer broke last night all of a sudden. Nothing has happened to the computer; I've never dropped it, nothing has hit it, nothing has happened that should cause it to break. When it broke, the screen fell forward and it cracked the screen. I have looked everywhere on this website for someone to contact about how to get it fixed but all I can find is a link to FedEx to begin a service order. Has this ever happened to anyone else and does anyone know how much it would be to get it fixed? Is it worth it to ship it to Lenovo or would it be better to take it to a local repair person? Unfortunately the warrenty ended about six months ago.

Hi everyone one, I am looking for advice/help. I bought this laptop (m6-n010dx) less than 2 years ago. I am so careful with my belongings, and this computer hasbeen babied. The left hinge blew out and now there is a big crack in the glass all around the hinge! I had to disable my touch screen because it is so messed up.  I asked my local repair guy and he said it is a very common issue, but the charge would be horrifying to repair. I am so disgruntled. I love HP, and have always bought their products. I am a bit of a brand snob!  Is there anything I can do?  Thank you all in advance.

My HP SPECTRE X360 - 15-AP012DX is less then 3 months old and the screen or "Digitizer" mysteriously cracked just like many others on the board. I have no answers for how this happened. I have contacted 3 of the larger repair shops, Ebay, Amazon as well as searched every combination of model number possible, no luck. Now I have a laptop thats disassembled and merely worthless.....Im highly agitated with this entire process.  This was my first Hp product and it will be my last. I read so many threads and I the general consensus is that HP doesnt care about the end user. Its always deflection deflection deflection. What I just noticed after i pulled it out of my bag,First, the lower plastic frame is cracking and falling apart, and second the aluminum screen frame has separated. I tried to push the screen back together but it wouldn't clip back on. What should i do? is this product under warranty? I'm afraid if i send it in to get repaired, it will just break again because of poor engineering, and i have read this problem is common across acer's laptops.

Hi,I have a beloved 8 years-old Lenovo T500 which I cherish dearly(and also cannot afford at the moment to replace with a new laptop). Through wear-and-tear over the years the Screen's bottom left hinge has started to give way - the actual metal screw hole, inside the plastic screen frame cover has broken off and as a result the entire screen is touchy-loose and the plastic frame across that side is widely opened and braking off. I'm looking for a way to improvise a permanent fix from the outside -Where the laptop screen can be moved to change it's angle of view (and also closed of course).I want to achieve this without opening the plastic frame cover, as I've already done that a few times and since the entire thing is delicate I already caused further damage on the opposite side where the plastic is weak. I tried using the strongest duck-tape I could find in order to try and hold that corner together (a black 'demolition tape'). It didn't hold through.I've also tried to super-glue the duck tape to that corner with a tight snug. It also got loose due to the faulty mechanism's exerted pressure :-( Below are links to a couple of photos are in order to try and illustrate the problem(I apologize for the poor quality due to my old Nokia C2 3-Megapixels mobile phone camera):  (https://goo.gl/photos/E69JJdC57fjVWSLF6) (https://goo.gl/photos/xypQb2WTi3s8AQoY8)&... Answer:A desperate cry for help - broken T500 Screen hinge

Honestly, I don't think there's a fix from the outside only. My guess is that the magnesium frame inside the LCD assembly broke (the lower left corner). Unfortunately this is something very common in the T/W500 series.

The only fix I see is replacing the mg frame, for which you need to remove the whole LCD assembly.

Hi, I am hoping for assistance with repairing or replacing the screen hinge on the right side of my laptop.  When I open the screen I can see the actual laptop body splitting.  Looking inside the screw hole I can see broken black plastic and and hear something moving inside when opening/closing. The computer is only about 15 mo old, so it is out of warranty, but since it's my secondary laptop I would have expected something as basic as the hinge to last a lot longer than this!   Does anyone know if HP is able to send me a free replacement part that I can use to fix it myself? Thanks in advance,Matt

I ordered a new Lenovo Y50-70, and it arrived 11/20/2015. Immediately I noticed there was an issue with the LED screen (corners of the screen were discolored from being dropped or the bezel being too tight). So, I went through support and shipped the laptop to the Service Depot in Grapevine, Texas 11/25/2015. I had the laptop less than five days. Today I get an update that they've identified the issue (which is good), but that ETA on replacement parts is 2/25/2016. No, I didn't type that wrong. THREE MONTHS. I am really not happy about this situation. First, a $1,000, brand new laptop should NOT have screen issues like it did when I got it. Second, I bought this laptop as a replacement for my old laptop, also a Lenovo. This is now my daily-use computer for both personal and business, and I cannot wait three months to have it returned. Third, I bought a 1-year in-home warranty (after shipping the laptop unfortunately) to avoid having to ship the laptop for any future reason, which means if it takes until Feb 25th 25% of my warranty will be eaten up with me getting no use from the laptop.  What are my options to get the laptop back to me sooner rather than later? Do I contact Lenovo and ask them to replace the screen with, for example, the UHD screen instead? Do I return the laptop for a refund or exchange for something else?

The hinges on my cousin's HP Pavilion ZV 6000 laptop have been broken and cracked for awhile. (One is broken, the other is cracked.) A few minutes ago he powered on the laptop only to find that the screen is completely black.

We're figuring that there must be a connection between the damaged hinges and the black screen.

We would greatly appreciate hearing from anyone who has an idea as to exactly what the problem is and how to go about fixing it.

Thank you.

In 2012 my mother and I both purchased the HP Pavillion g7 17.3 in screen laptops at different times. She purchased hers from Office Depot and I purchased mine from Walmart. About 2 months ago her laptop stopped closing properly and we noticed that the left hinge had dislodged from its intended position. A few weeks later her screen started to go out as well. We replaced the top cover and fixed the hinge but the screen is still unresponsive.  Two days ago, I noticed that my laptop started having the same problem and I find it very odd that both computers purchased from different locations and same "Pavillion g7" have the same casing malfunction. I have done a lot of research on this issue and there have been quite a few people with the same issue with their computers. Why has there not been a recall on this issue or at least HP should offer customers replacement parts for the known problem. I am very disappointed because I have always had HP laptops and printers but if the quality of these products are like this now, I may have to switch to a different brand. I hope someone can figure out what is going on and help with this situation.  Thanks

I had purchased this laptop, HP Envy M6-1090ee in August 2012. Soon after my warranty expired, the left hinge of the laptop started cracked and the screen frame too were affected because of this. Since I had to move between countries for short periods, I couldn't do anything about it. Until June 2014, when I contacted the HP service centre. After quite a few discussions regarding this issue, they decide to repair it for me. The repair was done and the machine didn't have any issue for a year. After which the same issue started cropping up. I have a HP case ID no. for the last service, that was given for the last repair. Any assistance regarding this will be highly appreciated and of a great help. Thank youAlex Robert

I purchased a HP Pavillion G7-2246NR Laptop with a 17.3 inch screen from Office Depot on Nov. 26, 2012.

The computer worked great until about a month ago when the left hinge seemed to be coming loose.  All I use this computer for is to surf the net at night while we watch TV so it rarely gets used.

Now the hinge has completely came out of the case and it has apparently  caused damage to the power button.  The computer will not power up at all.

I certainly believe this computer that I rarely use should have lasted more than a year and a half.  Is there a recall or some sort of free repair for these clearly defective units?

Please contact me for a solution,

Answer:Broken Left hinge on HP Pavillion G7-2246NR 17.3 screen

Hello @SFKervin , Welcome to the HP Forums! I understand the hinge has broken on your notebook and it no longer turns on. It's possible that the chassis has separated preventing the power button from making contact with the power button board below. The simplest solution would be to replace the hinge. You can find detailed instructions on how to replace the hinge here: HP Pavilion g7 Notebook PC Maintenance and Service Guide on page 57. You can order a replacement display hinge kit by searching the part number 682746-001 and the display hinge covers with part number 682747-001 (if needed) online from many retailers like Amazon, eBay, or the HP Part Surfer web store. Regarding any recalls you can see a list of active recalls for HP on the following website: Replacement programs and product recalls. Hopefully this helps!

The left hinge seems to have come loose, and a tab with a screw that is part of the hinge now pushes up on the casing of the laptop about half an inch high.  Not to mention the laptop will not fully close.  Any suggestions?

Same porblem as all the others. The bottom left corner of the case has broken off leaving the hinge intact and hanging.  I see this is an HP QC issue as there are thousands of complaints yet few good resolutions posted..,

I want to preface this message so that others may understand how horrible an experience it is to claim anything on the manufacture warranty with Lenovo.  Previous to my company using Lenovo we used Dell. Their support was always top notch. They came on site to replace broken or defective parts and all with in 1-2 day period. The Lenovo warranty experince will start by you being suffeld around to 3-4 different Indian speaking help desk locations, and after explaining your issues 4-5 times they will inform you that you must ship the laptop in for replacement services. This will require you to be with out your laptop for 7-10 business days. That in my book is  unacceptable to any standards. IBM Thinkpads used to be known for how well they supported the business user, now we are told that you have no other options but to ship the laptop and wait more than a week for the matter to be resolved.  This is the last straw from a frustrated IT manager, and we will be taking our business to a vendor that values customer support and stands behind thier products better.

While I can sympahise - when you purchased your lenovo products if you did not purchase the on-site service what exactly do you expect ? Like anything else, no-one can return a product for service without following procedures and such returns, repairs etc all take time. So - whats the issue - you are getting exactly what you paid for .......

The left hinge casing on my laptop came off and was lost, and the black, plastic case for the screen is cracked and seperates from the screen when closing and opening the laptop. If there is a fix, I need it to be done quickly (I will pay for expedited shipping). I'm not sure if I have a warrantee on the laptop, it was a gift. The laptop is an envy m6. Any help would be appreciated.

For two years, I had been a proud user of my big screen laptop until the day I opened the lid and the plastic behind the left hinge crumbled like a cookie. I was totally shocked. I hadn't hit my laptop against anything nor had I dropped it, why, I hadn't even carried it around like most people do. The bloody hinge broke just like that. I was in for more shock and disappointment when the screen casing came apart when I tried to close the lid. Before I knew it, the damage had been done. I realized that I could not use my laptop like I normally do anymore. Since then, I have left the lid open always lest it break the screen completely. On the Forum, I learned that this is a design issue and many more users have suffered broken hinges and casings. If that's the case, why is HP not recalling faulty models? I have been an ardent fan of HP for twenty years. (Talking of fans, ever since the hinge broke and the casing came apart, I have been getting error messages about the cooling fan not functioning properly, that I need to shut down my PC). My first computer was a HP Pavilion desktop and so was my first printer. A few years ago, I even designed a logo for HP Shadow Labs, but it was not selected as a prospective design. That's another story. Now, how am I going to take my laptop to the city which is 100 miles away when I cannot safely close the lid even? I am out of warranty, so I will have to pay for replacements and service. Why should I pay for something... Read more

Hi there, I have been reading many posts on this forum, and apparently I am not the only one with this problem: My HP Envy 6-1010sa left hinge has decided to go askew and it's making the left bottom edge of my screen to spit, as I open/close the screen. I have not read about any solutionsfrom HP on my fellow-commentators, so I'm not sure what to do. As everyone else, my warranty has just expired, the laptop is only approx. 1.5 years old. The laptop works totally fine, and the screen is fine too and normally I am really happy with this laptop! But I am really worried now, I don't want the screen to get damaged even more! Can anyone, from HP please, tell me how to fix this? The hinge is not broken I think, it just seems out of position and I cant get it back in position and it's pulling the screen apart. I'm based in Amsterdam, is there a HP repair department in Amsterdam where I can go to? It seems like such an easy thing to repair, I just want a professional to look at it and I can't afford a whole new screen/whole new laptop! Many thanks for you help in advance! Here is an image that someone else posted, mine looks exactly the same! (how odd) Thanks, Susanne

I got new hinges for my laptop not too long ago. These hinges were apparently too strong. So strong, that it broke the METAL part of the screen assembly off, making the screen assembly almost unusable. I am getting a new 8600 to fix this plus a list of other dilemmas I have with this current one. If I were to reuse these hinges, how do I make them more loose?

The right hinge broke on my ENVY m6. Now the left one is about to go. The waranty is up and I have noticed that this is a common problem with this product. I should hope that there has been a recall on this. HP should at least repair the issue free of charge (waranty or no waranty). I take great care of my things and my computer is no exception. Please give me advice on this one. I am extremely disappointed at this point.

Question: Inspiron 5547

My Inspiron 5547's case has been broken for some time now, Dell support says that the broken case is my fault.
I've had multiple Dell products over the years, this is disappointing to say the least.
Yes, it was broken/cracked during the "warranty" period.
I wish Dell would step up and fix their faulty cases.

HELP!!!  Having persistent hardware issues with my integrated camera.  When my top is opened all the way, the camera works fine.  When I begin to lower the top, the camera starts blinking on and off when the lid reaches approximately 90 degrees.  As I continue to lower it, the camera stops working and the camera screen is black.  If I re-open the top all the way, the camera comes back on.
I've updated both the BIOS and the driver.  I've taken off the bezel and disconnected and reconnected the camera just to ensure a tight fit.  The best I can come up with is that there is some kind of "short" in the wire when the lid begins to close.
Any ideas would be MUCH appreciated...THANKS!

Good day.
I've been having a problem for the past few weeks. My laptop can't turn off completely. When the screen gets black the laptop cooler is still running. After that I can't turn the laptop on. I have to hold the power button for a few seconds that forces it to turn off completely and only after that I can turn it on again.
Recently I replaced my HDD to SDD (Samsung EVO 850) installed Windows 10 from scratch, updated BIOS and all the drivers to the latest versions (from dell website) but still have the same problem :(
I tried several pieces of advice: 1. Disabled USB power management feature that can turn off usb power for a while. 2. Turned off hibernation. 3. Tried different Intel Video drivers (Windows Default, from dell web site, the latest from Intel website).
No result.
Can you help me to discover the issue, please? I believe that this is a driver/BIOS problem. It probably happened after the latest BIOS update.
Can my SSD be killed by force turn off (the power button holding)?

Im sure everyone knows what problem im talking about, cracking in the top right corner and popping out a bit. I was wondering if this is supposed to be fixed by Dell or not. Why would you even keep selling this laptop after such a problem. Been on phone for hours, keep telling me they've never heard of such problem. Am I supposed to pay for this repair or are they?

Answer:Inspiron 5547 problem of course

I need to boot my 15-5547 from a USB so that I can install Ubuntu as my primary OS for work but the bios (a04) cannot boot from a USB.
I receive "System doesn't have any USB boot option. Please select other boot option in Boot Manager Menu." when I select the USB boot option in the dell/windows boot manager.
I have heard that bios a08 is able to boot from a USB, is this really my only option to update my BIOS ? Or is there an easier way to get this done ?

My Dell Inspiron 5547 has the same problem./ The right side pops open once I open the laptop. It makes cracking sounds and the screw has gone through the body now.
I want Dell to recall the model and fix it for their clients. Why can't they own up to the fact that it is a manufacturing / design defect/flaw and take corrective action on it?
